Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This 3D technology is available at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Breast Center at the Weston-main campus and at the new Coral Springs Family Health Center. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” Maria Artze, MD says Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.”

The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses Cassann Blake, MD and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy

(tissue sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.” To schedule a consultation with Dr. Blake or Dr. Margaret Thompson in Weston or Coral Springs, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/BreastCancer.

A Bountiful Harvest

T

he month of October often conjures up images of harvests, autumn and falling leaves. Watching leaves turn red and fall is less of a common occurrence here than for our friends up north. Agriculture is, however, still an important part of Broward County and South Florida. According to the USDA’s 2012 Census of Agriculture, there were almost 15 thousand acres of land being used for farming in Broward County. This farmland generates about $50 million a year in livestock and crop sales. These figures do not include the well-established horse economy in Plantation, Davie and Southwest Ranches. While most of Broward County is built out with neighborhoods, city parks and commercial developments, there are still over 600 farms producing everything from bell peppers to beef. These farms preserve a past where much of West Broward was composed of ranches and orange groves. There are a number of farms and nurseries where residents can buy locally grown produce. Check out our calendar section each month to find farmers markets in your area. Remember, October harvests happen in paradise too! Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Fall is In the Air – It’s Time for the 52nd Annual Art in the Park Festival BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

lthough the leaves are not changing colors and there is no chill in the air, many Plantation residents know it’s fall when the annual Plantation Junior Woman’s Club Foundation (PJWC) presents their annual arts festival. The two-day show has South Florida residents enjoying their chai tea lattes as they walk through one of the most popular area events during the season. This year the ambitious club is proud to produce the 52nd annual Art in the Park with the theme “Splash into the Arts” which will take place on

November 10th and 11th at Liberty Tree Park. For over 5 decades, the juried fine arts and fine crafts show continues to be the most anticipated event in the community. Each year the arts festival promotes an Art Search talent contest for local students and winners from the 2018 Art Search contest will be on display. Over 100 vendors will showcase fine arts, handmade crafts, artisan made items, and so much more. On the main stage visitors will enjoy free live entertainment from The Jeff D. Band, Pro Music Plus, and presen-

tations from local dance companies. The large Kids’ Corner will include a bounce house, obstacle course, face painting, games, and free entertainment including animal encounters. Besides art displays, a craft beer and wine tent and plenty of food vendors will be on-site. “The art show started in 1966 and is very special to the PJWC, and we want everyone in Plantation to feel a part of it. Art in the Park could not be a reality without the support of our wonderful members and our community,” exclaimed Jamie Eisenstein Art in the Park Chair. “Helping to plan this years’ festival has allowed me to meet so many community members that have been so willing to take part and make the

52nd Art in the Park the best one yet!” Funds raised by Art in the Park are returned to the community through many of the PJWC projects. In years past, the net proceeds have gone to local organizations such as the Plantation High School Art Club, City of Plantation summer camp program, South Plantation High School Friends of the Theater, and many more. Additionally, this event enables the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club to fund scholarships for two graduating Plantation area high school seniors. n November 10 and 11th – Saturday 9am5pm / Sunday 10am-4pm at Liberty Tree Park, 7421 NW 5th Street, Plantation (Just east of University Drive)- Free admission, free parking, Kids Korner, Live Music, Food Vendors, Family Fun *No pets - For more information, please visit www.PJWCFL.org.

Get to Know Plantation’s Mayoral Candidate Lynn Stoner

B

orn the oldest of four children in Painesville, Ohio, but planted in Plantation in 1970 has made this long-time South Florida resident blossom in the community which she has made her home. Mayoral Candidate Lynn Stoner raised all three of her children and built successful businesses where “the grass is greener”. She is extremely proud that her grown children also chose to stay in the City and she loves that her grandchild attends a Plantation high school. After having served almost 8 years on the City Council, as well as the City’s General Employee Pension Board, and on various advisory boards, including, but not limited to, Plantation’s Parks and Recreation and Board of Adjustment, and Broward County’s Small Business Advisory Board and Broward County School Board Diversity Outreach Council, as well as various volunteer organizations, including, but not limited to, Rebuilding Together Broward, Jacaranda Cay Homeowner’s Board, Plantation Kiwanis Club, Plantation Women’s Club and Plantation Acres Women’s Club, it’s clear that she is dedicated to make the City of Plantation the best it can be. The Mayoral Candidate’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, land surveying school, real estate broker license, general contractor’s license, and licensed title insurance agent. She has much experience and is an expert with leadership, organization, time management, budgets, agendas, employee issues, insurance matters, collective bargaining, licensure, permitting, building, zoning, land use, just to name a few. So far, Stoner’s accomplishments

include the formation of the City’s first Charter Review Board, which she aggressively pursued for quite some time. Since the City was formed in 1953 there was never been a comprehensive review of Plantation’s Charter. Once the Charter Review Board presents its recommendations to the City Council, any recommendations that are accepted by a majority of the City Council will then either be passed by resolution or be placed on a future ballot to allow the voters to decide, depending on the type of issue. Additionally, she had several of her procurement suggestions incorporated into the current process thus making the City more financially responsible to its residents. This includes having two additional code enforcement officers hired which keeps the City a

more desirable place to live. She also had the City replace its flowering plants, which had to be watered frequently and changed annually, replaced with xeriscape plantings, thus saving the City money and protecting our environment. But, what the outgoing candidate is most proud of is her recognition as the “go to councilmember”. This resulted from constant accessibility to the residents and businesses and hard work to deal with their concerns, suggestions, ideas and complaints. Items the running Mayoral Candidate would like to address are more staffing and support for our

first responders, better response and co-ordination for traffic problems on Plantation’s major thoroughfares, and better and more transparent government. Stoner has been a huge advocate to ensure that the City’s first responders receive the proper funding and equipment required to protect the residents and businesses. She also believes that the City could use some additional officers, especially in light of the new requirement for the City to provide additional School Resource Officers to protect our students at their schools. Furthermore, traffic is an issue for Plantation as it is for every other city in the county. She has contacted County Commissioners Steve Geller and Nan Rich regarding the County’s proposed additional sales tax and the Plantation projects. Additionally, the “go to councilmember” met with a private traffic engineer, the MPO, and had telephone conversations with The Town of Davie Mayor Judy Paul and Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan about collaborating on a solution to the University Drive corridor traffic. While they are county roads, as Mayor, “I will not sit by and do nothing about an issue that so dramatically affects our residents,” exclaims Stoner. The biggest challenge facing any government is balancing the interests of the residents and businesses. Following a close second is financial concerns, against balancing taxation with affordability. Residents want the positive benefits of business, diversity, closeness, and good prices, but not the downside, taller buildings, traffic and costs to support same. Businesses want prime locations with considerable traffic, but residents don’t like to travel congested roadways. “We are a city at the heart, both physically and figuratively, of Broward County, and a lot of our issues are not caused by our residents and businesses, but by pass-through travelers. We have to find a way to get these other municipalities and the County to pay their fair share of using our infrastructure. And in conjunction with that, we must work

with our governments to get the federal government to also be fair with us and pay our reimbursements for natural disasters in a much timelier fashion, to reduce the cost and stress on our City,” says Stoner.

“It’s clear that she is dedicated to make the City of Plantation the best it can be.” When not helping citizens and making Plantation a better place to live, play, and work, the 2018 Mayoral Candidate can be found working in her yard, antiquing, cooking, and spending time with her family. She’s also always up for a good sporting event, good movie, and good food. She’s even tried skydiving. Nothing can keep this ambitious leader from achieving her goals. “Responsive and responsible government is a major concern today, as no one likes to pay taxes, but if I can show the taxpayers that the City is properly using their hard-earned money for their benefit, both today and in the future, they will support our projects. I also have to allow them to see what we are doing and how we are doing it so that they are comfortable with how their City is being run with their money,” adds Stoner. “Talent, culture and leadership equal success. We have some very talented employees in our City, but they need to believe in the vision and its execution. While you must lead with your head, you must also include your heart, otherwise we lose that special quality that makes Plantation the “heart” of Broward County, in more ways than one.”

The Legacy Continues – Debbie’s Dream Foundation Hosts its 4th Annual Dream BIG Luncheon BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

lthough this year’s event will be bittersweet with its leader and founder no longer with us, her memory and legacy will forever be kept alive. Debbie Zelman’s spirit and ambition to cure stomach cancer and to bring awareness to the cause will continue with the Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer (DDF) 4th annual “Dream BIG Legacy Luncheon”. The event will be held on November 7th at the Jacaranda Country Club in Plantation, Florida, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This year’s luncheon will honor the lifetime achievements of late DDF Founder, Debbie Zelman, who dedicated her life to finding a cure for stomach cancer while battling the disease for nearly a decade. Luncheon Co-Chairs Linda Gendler and Sabrina Kurzman look forward to leading their committee in hosting another successful luncheon for the 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.

“Debbie may be gone, but her mission to find a cure for stomach cancer will live on,” said Gendler. “It is truly my honor to co-chair the luncheon for the fourth year in a row, even more so this year, as we celebrate Debbie’s amazing legacy.” The luncheon will feature a fabulous silent auction and amazing raffles followed by lunch and dessert. Auction items include priceless experiences, sports memorabilia, jewelry, fine dining, vacations, and more. Guests will also enjoy a celebrity guest emcee as well as a festive experience curated by Tito’s Handmade Vodka throughout the event. “Co-chairing the Legacy Luncheon with Linda, our wonderful committee, DDF staff and the community is a great privilege. Together, we will make Debbie’s dream of finding a cure come true,” added Kurzman. DDF was founded in 2009 by Debbie Zelman after she was diagnosed with stage IV incurable gastric cancer in 2008 and given only weeks to live. Debbie is considered a pioneer by many for bringing awareness to the plight of stomach cancer patients worldwide and the lack of federal funding for stomach cancer research. She achieved all of this while receiving hundreds of rounds of chemotherapy, in addition to

As a result of her leadership, DDF now has a Scientific and Medical Advisory Board, comprised of world-renowned physicians, and chapters throughout the United States and in Canada and Germany. DDF strives to continue Debbie’s mission and make her dream come true. Tickets are $100 each or $1,000 for a table of 10 guests. Several sponsorship levels are available and do include seating. MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Fall Safety BY CHIEF HOWARD HARRISON s we get into the fall season, the days will be getting shorter and darkness will appear earlier. The weather will also get a little cooler, so people will tend to venture out at night more often. This makes visibility more difficult as cars, pedestrians, and cyclists are much harder to see at night than during the daylight hours. Therefore, children need to be especially careful and parents need to be more mindful of their whereabouts. Did you know on average children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year? Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it involves a child’s safety. Here are a few safety precautions parents can do to help prevent accidents: ▸▸ Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. ▸▸ Since masks can sometimes obstruct a child’s vision, try non-toxic face paint and makeup whenever possible. ▸▸ Have kids use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. ▸▸ Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, remind them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and to trick-or-treat in groups. ▸▸ Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours. ▸▸ When selecting a costume make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. ▸▸ Consider having parties at your house. Invite not only other children, but the parents too. ▸▸ And always inspect the contents of your child’s candy bag.

Imagine Charter School Was All Aboard to Learn Powerful Life Lessons BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

magine Charter School in Plantation had some great classroom visitors teach some powerful life lessons. Two second grade classes enjoyed their time spent with mentor volunteers from the Coast Guard and Johnson & Johnson as part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program. KAPOW, now in its 27th year, serves over 6,000 students annually. The unique collaboration between the school district, almost 200 area businesses partners, 500 volunteers, and 75 South Florida schools introduces and exposes students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught

by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. There are eight lesson topics in the KAPOW curriculum and the lesson taught to these inquisitive second grade sharks was “Open Minds, Overcoming Bias and Stereotype”. The lesson is designed to increase students’ awareness of racial and sexual biases and stereotyping with their negative consequences. The lesson focuses on demonstrations of bias and encourages students to accept every person with an open mind. The activity the volunteers instructed and assisted with was called “Surprise

Box”. The art project allowed students to decorate a shoe box and then place an object inside that no one would expect to find. The Johnson & Johnson volunteer brought the items while the Coast Guard volunteers helped wrap and decorate the containers. Students were instructed to fashion their box to not reflect what was inside of it. This led to a discussion about being open-minded and learning that people are not always what they seem on the outside. Therefore, the objectives were learned in a fun and creative way. “Once students are aware of how they label other people, they will learn that they can take steps to avoid stereotyping. ln addition, students will see that only an employee’s interests and abilities should limit job opportunity, not appearance, race, sex, religion, or nationality,” explained Tania Reynolds, KAPOW Program Director. KAPOW brings volunteers into schools to teach kids about work, and

how to be a success in school, work and life. KAPOW also brings students to the workplace, to experience peoples’ jobs first-hand, expose them to jobs in real time, and connect partner companies and organizations to the community. “The KAPOW program bridges the gap between what students learn at school and how it applies to the real world of work. The program exposes students to various careers they never knew existed and allows them to have practical goals for the future. Our volunteers connect with kids by sharing their pathway to success and becomes a valuable mentor in the classroom,” added Reynolds. n KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For more information about volunteering or how your school can participate, email KAPOW Program Director Tania Reynolds at taniakapow@gmail.com or call 305-338-5548.

It Takes a Village – JAFCO Celebrates Back to School BY BEVERLY PERKINS

M

ore than 100 children and adoptive families came out to celebrate going back to school at JAFCO’s annual “Back-to-School Picnic” at the Children’s Village in Sunrise. JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options) is a nonprofit organization that serves abused, neglected and developmentally disabled children in the tri-county area. The event was hosted as a reunion event for foster and adoptive families and children currently residing at JAFCO Children’s Village. The Children’s Village resembles a typical family oriented South Florida gated residential community. It sits on a manicured and lushly landscaped 5.6 acres, has playgrounds, a swimming pool and a bicycle path. There are six group homes on a private residential street with views of a beautiful canal. Each home has six bedrooms and bathrooms and houses up to six children. These homes are staffed by live-in house

parents and function as individual “families” that are part of the JAFCO community. The organization has always made it a priority to provide a typical, consistent lifestyle for the children in their care and going back to school should be no different. Everyone enjoyed the picnic which featured inflatable water slides, a bounce house, pony rides, face painting, motorcycle rides and plenty of delicious food. Most importantly, children were provided with all the tools needed for a successful school year because of the generous amount of supplies collected in drives around the area. JAFCO Director of Development Operations, Shelli Gold said that the volunteers from across the community make this event possible year after year. The King David Bikers, an organization dedicated to giving back to their community, continue to sponsor the annual picnic. Their motorcycle rides around the campus are a highlight of the night for all the children. In addition, Ultimate Software, a Weston-based technology company, provided two teams of volunteers who dedicated their time and hard work to the event while lighting up the Village with their enthusiasm. The Ultimate volunteers showed incredible support,

both setting up and breaking down the picnic, moving and arranging furniture and grills, organizing clothing, cleaning up afterwards and offering to help with other projects throughout the year. One of the volunteers’ biggest feats was sorting through and arranging all the school supplies into a store-experience for the children. With so many options of backpacks and supplies, the children were able to choose the specific items they will enjoy throughout the school year. “JAFCO is grateful for all the generous donations and volunteer assistance that allow us to continue our mission… giving every child a place to belong,” added Gold. If you would like to learn more about JAFCO or donate to their incredible mission, go to www.jafco.org or call the Children’s Village at (954)749-7230.

Start Your Engines – Local Teen is Living Life in the Fast Lane BY BEVERLY PERKINS

lexander Searle is already on the right track, literally and figuratively, to achieving his dream career. The South Plantation High School honor student began his quest to get into the extremely competitive field of auto racing. The over-zealous sophomore suited up and started his engine on the infamous Indianapolis Motor Speedway this past summer. Most boys love playing with cars when they are little. Some may even say they want to be a race car driver when they “grow up”, and over time lose interest and desire something else. But, Searle has never outgrown his choice career of becoming a race car driver. “From the time he could walk, there wasn’t a photograph of him without a car in his hands,” exclaimed his stepfather Rick Strunck. “Now, at the age of 14, he has taken that dream to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to test his skills against some of the best kart drivers in the United States, England, Australia, and New Zealand.” The weekend in Indiana drew over 350 drivers,

and Searle was racing in the Briggs 206 Junior Class where he fought his way to a 5th place finish qualifying on the first day. He parlayed that result into a 2nd place finish in the heat race on the following day, coming in just .087 of a second behind the leader. The final 14-lap race ended with Searle crossing the finish line in 3rd place; .364 of a second behind the lead kart. This was not the position he was striving for, but certainly one which proved he is becoming a driver to be watched after only 9 months of competitive racing. “When I was three years old, I went to Homestead Miami Speedway with my dad. The F1 cars were out on track and when they came out of the last corner, you could hear the roar of the V12 engines as they got closer. My dad thought I was going to be scared as the engines were very loud and it seemed like the whole world was echoing. The thing was, I wasn’t scared. In fact, I was mesmerized, and I knew that racing was what I wanted to do,” exclaimed Searle. In the past year, Searle has raced on tracks in Homestead, Inverness, Ocala and Jacksonville,

Florida, as well as tracks in North Carolina and Chicago, Illinois and now Indianapolis, Indiana. He was also chosen to be a factory driver for MGM Chassis and he has just been selected as one of thirty go-kart drivers from around the world to participate in the “2018 Cooper Tires Karting Scholarship Shootout” in December. Despite all the traveling, the conscientious student manages to maintain a grade point average of 3.5 which will certainly get him to the finish line.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF

Look. Listen. Learn. Be Aware. Fire Can Happen Anywhere BY E. LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF

U

rban legend tells the tale of how, on a windy Chicago night Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern and caused one of the most tragic fires in U.S. history. Well, the story of the cow has since proven to be a lot of bull. However, the Great Chicago Fire was very real as was the tremendous loss of life and destruction of nearly one third of the City. In the wake of that tragedy grew Fire Prevention Week. Every year the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) publishes a theme that helps remind us to be aware of fire safety and fire prevention tips. During the month of October, our Public Education Team is out and about in the community spreading that message. While our team is always spreading the fire prevention message, October is by far their busiest month. This year’s theme from the NFPA, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be Aware. Fire Can Happen Anywhere” is reflected in our 42nd Annual Marti Terziu Art & Literature Contest. Each year we invite all school-

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Gynecologic Cancers: Causes & Treatment Options BY DR. JONATHAN BLACK MD, MPH ancer is a group of diseases involving the growth of abnormal cells which can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. Who Is Most Susceptible? There are multiple type of gynecologic cancer including Uterine/Endometrial, Ovarian/Fallopian Tube, Cervical, Vaginal, and Vulvar. Each type of cancer has different risk factors associated with it. ▸▸ Uterine/Endometrial: Obesity, being post-menopausal, exposure to hormones, exposure to Tamoxifen, personal and familial genetics ▸▸ Ovarian/Fallopian Tube: Age, personal and familial genetics, number of pregnancies (lower number - increased risk), age at menarche and menopause (earlier menarche and later menopause - increased risk), use of infertility treatments ▸▸ Cervical/Vaginal/Vulvar: Exposure to HPV, history of lichen sclerosus (vulvar), smoking, being post-menopausal What are the symptoms of gynecologic cancers? Each type of cancer has different presenting symptoms. ▸▸ Uterine/Endometrial: post-menopausal bleeding, irregular vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, weight loss, pelvic pain ▸▸ Ovarian/Fallopian Tube: bloating, pelvic pain, feeling full when eating, weight changes, changes in bowel habits, frequent need to urinate ▸▸ Cervical/Vaginal/Vulvar: Pelvic pain, bleeding after intercourse, irregular vaginal bleeding or watery/bloody discharge, vaginal itching (vaginal/ vulvar cancer) Are They Dangerous? If left unattended, any cancer can be lethal. Depending on the type of gynecologic cancer and the stage of the cancer at the time of diagnosis the outcomes are different. Some patients will achieve a cure and others, unfortunately, will succumb to the disease. Because of the broad range of outcomes, each case is discussed on a case-by-case basis. What Are the Treatment Options? Most often, surgery is the first option for many gynecologic cancers and the extent of surgery is case dependent. In many instances, the surgery can be completed through minimally-invasive techniques either robotically or through conventional laparoscopy. Many times, these can be done as same day procedures. For more advanced cancers an abdominal incision may be required. And in some special circumstances, including people not healthy enough for surgery or desiring to preserve fertility (leave the uterus or ovary in place), surgeries and treatments can be tailored to the individual patient.

Habitual Toe Walkers BY DR. JOHN GOODNER

A

t the beginning of independent walking, toddlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common in boys and in many cases are a cause of concern. Treatment of habitual toe walkers may be necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, stretching at home may be of benefit. Usually casting the foot and leg is necessary to stretch out the tight

muscle group. Casts may be applied every two weeks for involved. The child can resume almost all activities four to eight weeks. ook out, there is a new dance studio in town! Dance IQ-More Than Dance by Alisa Jacob arrived in South Florida six months ago and is excited to share their techniques and methods with all those interested in “dancing like no one is watching”. Alisa Jacob, Founder and Director of Dance IQ, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) with a Master of Arts in Dance Education (2017). She is also recognized by the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) as a Registered Dance Educator (RDE) which promotes highly qualified dance educators. Halloween Tricks and Tips to Enjoy Treats BY DR. MO SIRAGE DMD, MS Halloween is almost upon us and although it is my favorite holiday, I always end up seeing so many emergency patients during this time of year. With this festive celebration, comes candy, and lots of it! Everyone loves candy, but we have to keep in mind that some of them are so bad for our teeth. Hard candy such as lollipops can be damaging because they deliver loads of sugar over an extended period of time into our mouth and directly to our teeth. When it comes to sugar, the longer it stays in your mouth, the more damage it can cause to the teeth. Sugar creates an acidic environment in the mouth which attacks and weakens tooth enamel and promotes the growth of bacteria. The longer the sugar stays around your teeth, the more damage the acid and the bacteria can do. Ultimately, this contributes to the formation of cavities and a weakened tooth structure making teeth more prone to cracking. To avoid problems, try to enjoy sugar free candy. Some candies are sweetened by Xylitol which can be considered the best sweetener. Remember, less sugar, less acid, and less bacteria, results in stronger teeth. Another healthy alternative to hard sugary candy is dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains a relatively lower amount of sugar and dissolves quickly. Also, the calcium from chocolate can make teeth harder, and the cocoa beans actually fight bacteria and plaque. Another trick to eating less sugary candy during the holidays, especially Halloween, is to try to have nuts mixed in with your candy. Nutty candy bars and dark chocolate almonds are good options because the sugar cannot stick to the tooth surface long enough to cause too much damage due to the scraping properties of the crushed nuts. Watch out for the added artificial ingredients though. Additionally, try to improve your dental and overall systemic health by substituting healthy snacks for bad ones. Toss the sugary candy and potato chips and start snacking on tomatoes which contain calcium and Vitamin K. Both nutrients are essential in making bones and teeth stronger. Carrots are also a good option, eating them raw can help clean your teeth by eliminating plaque from teeth and gums. Carrots also stimulate saliva which is your mouth’s natural cleanser. Another practice to avoid is opening bags of candy or bottle caps with your teeth. Over the years, we have seen too many fractured teeth due to this bad habit. Teeth are not tools, always keep scissors or bottle openers accessible. Stay safe and take care of your teeth. Happy Halloween!

Dr. Mo Sirage was born in Dubai and moved to the United States when he was sixteen years old. When he is not with his patients, he loves fitness and has two beautiful children with whom he spends most of his time.

SEEN ON SCENE

BACK TO THE BOOKS

Plantation General Hospital (PGH) hosted a “Back to School Bonanza” at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. Over 40 families and almost 100 children received an A+ for attendance. Those who made the honor roll were PGH Chief Operating Officer Michael Poli who read during story time, PGH resident magician pediatrician, Dr. Freimark who had a few tricks up his sleeve, and Plantation Fire and Rescue’s mascot Sparky who visited with his top crew.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

JAFCO’s annual Back to School event was a huge success. More than 100 children and adoptive families came to celebrate and get ready to go back to school with a BBQ picnic, motorcycle rides, and plenty of school supplies. See the full story on page 26.

HOT FUNDING

The GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club is all about making a difference in the community. These ladies certainly are on fire as they recently enjoyed seeing the purchases the Plantation Fire & Rescue Department made with their contributions. Here they are photographed with the new educational trailer, two new workout machines, rescue dive gear, Sparky and Big Bob.

MYSTIC LADIES OF THE MUSEUM

The Mystic Ladies of Dance performed at the Plantation Historical Museum. A trio of dancers, led by Carmen Crespo, entertained the group with various dance routines in a subtle homage to WWI spy and dancer, Mata Hari. The ladies twirled with beautiful scarves, belly danced with zills (finger cymbals) and wowed the crowd with LED-butterfly wings. At the end of the show, kids were invited to make trench periscopes out of recycled materials. 40 OCTOBER 2018 | OUR CITY PLANTATION | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
