We Have Much to be Thankful For
M
any of us take a moment to sit back and give thanks during November. At Our City Media, we have something special to be thankful for, our eighth magazine, Our City Fort Lauderdale, was launched this month! Our City Fort Lauderdale is just like this magazine – full of local community and school news stories and delivered to our readers’ mailboxes every month. We are proud that Our City Magazines are a little bit different than other magazines you might receive. We are deliberately and specifically a local magazine and strive to be your source for community and school news. We are also quite proud of our positive voice. Don’t look in these pages for gotcha journalism, crime blotters or divisive political exposés. You won’t find them. However, do look for uplifting stories such as the incredible, selfless acts our neighbors performed before, during and after the recent hurricanes. You also might find pictures of a cute little puppy or a group of students competing in a science fair. In this time of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for the wonderful group of people we work with, the incredible communities we serve, and the hard-working local businesses and advertising partners that make publishing this magazine possible.

Not Your Ordinary Walk in the Park - 51st Annual Art in the Park BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or two days every fall, the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club Foundation (PJWC) presents their annual arts festival in Liberty Tree Park. This year they are proud to produce the 51st annual Art in the Park with the theme “Art in Paradise” which will take place on November 11th and 12th.
For over 5 decades, the juried fine arts and fine crafts show continues to be the most anticipated event in the community. Visitors of all ages always are drawn to the show, and this year The City of Plantation took over the property adjoining the park. This now enables the venue to expand allowing for even larger crowds, and include a separate craft section.
12
Each year the arts festival includes a heavy community focus by promoting an Art Search talent contest for local students and live performances by local groups. These include dance studios, martial arts, elementary schools, and other local contributors. The Plantation High School Art Club and French Club will also be on-site to help in the Kids Korner. This year the event will also feature local craft beer, a wide variety of food vendors and wine tasting. The Art Search competition is open to all students throughout the city. Participants were asked to create art based on this year’s theme. Art entries could be done in many different mediums such as pen and ink, watercolors, collages, photographs and pencil drawings. All will be on display at a designated tent. It’s an opportunity for budding artists to showcase their work among veteran artists. Art in the Park is organized and operated entirely by volunteers - PJWC members, their families, and friends. Others in the community also always come forward to do their part to help make the annual event a success. The generosity of local media sponsors, such as Comcast and the Sun Sentinel, also contribute to attracting the public to the festival. “Art in the Park is an amazing community event. I’m excited to see local artists, crafters, musicians, schools and non-profits come together for a great

cause,” says Danielle Durham, Chair of Art in the Park 2017. Funds raised by Art in the Park are returned to the community through many of the PJWC projects. In years past, the net proceeds have gone to local organizations such as the Plantation High School Art Club, Helen B. Hoffman Library, Young at Art Children’s Museum (benefiting low-income Plantation children), and 4Kids of South Florida (their Plantation crisis facility, Safe Place). Additionally, this event enables the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club to fund scholarships for four graduating Plantation area high school seniors as well as seniors that live in Plantation. November 11 and 12th – Saturday 9am5pm / Sunday 10am-4pm at Liberty Tree Park, 7421 NW 5th Street, Plantation (Just east of University Drive)- Free admission, free parking, Kids Korner, Live Music, Food Vendors, Family Fun *No pets - For more information, please visit www.PJWCFL.org.
It Takes a Village – Plantation Residents Step up to Help Those in Need COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
J
ust a couple of months ago, Hurricane Irma blew through South Florida leaving many devastated. Although Plantation did not receive the worst of her fury, she still left much damage in her wake. Other neighboring communities and cities needed help, and thanks to social media, for many that still did have internet and power, the message was received. Many Plantation residents did not have to stop and think twice, they just wanted to help. Liv Marwah, a Plantation business owner, was one who read about a heartbroken teacher from Immokalee. The already impoverished migrant farm community near Naples was completely destroyed. Marwah shared the post on different Facebook group pages, and expected a few individuals to perhaps help, but was ecstatic to see that so many offered assistance. “I have been an educator myself, and wanted to help this teacher rebuild her community,” said Marwah. “People from all over responded and came to donate food, water, clothing, shoes, bedding, etc., and low and behold, we had truckloads of donations pouring in as well as offerings of trucks, trailers, and jeeps to help get the donations to Immokalee. We had a convoy of about 10-15 vehicles traveling to meet the teacher who wrote the initial post, and donated items to the local charities that have been feeding and tak-
ing care of the workers who have lost everything and have nowhere to go.” Rabbi Cheryl Jacobs of Plantation was able to get hundreds of community volunteers to collect and distribute much needed items to Feeding South Florida, Century Village Pembroke Pines, Craig’s Kosher Food Pantry and WeCare. Even though they had no power, Andi Gresham, Plantation resident and Mirror Lake Elementary teacher, and her husband were gracious enough to share a generator with a neighbor so they wouldn’t lose their insulin. They also gave their supplies to others in need not even considering that they may need them themselves. Later, upon hearing from the Broward County Teachers Union that the senior community, Century Village of Pembroke Pines, also had no power and volunteers were needed to distribute food to their residents Gresham did not hesitate. She went right over to help, and was able to cover five buildings with Tropical Elementary teacher Jordanna Egan. “It was nothing really. The news of the nursing home had broken earlier that day, and that story had a huge impact on me going,” said Gresham. “Those residents are people’s parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers. It was the least I could do to help out.”

Plantation Firefighters Welcome Home Veterans COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
D
espite being heavily involved in Hurricane Irma cleanup Plantation firefighters took some time to join dozens of other organizations and individuals to welcome home some very special veterans as part of the Honor Flight program. Honor Flight South Florida, a non-profit charity, takes veterans to Washington, DC on a charter flight at designated times during the year free of charge as a way to thank and pay tribute to as many heroes, especially World War II (WWII) veterans, by honoring and remembering them. The fully escorted trip recently returned from one of their fall flights with more than 140 veterans on board. The mission included round-trip airfare, deluxe bus transportation, meals, souvenir t-shirts and other amenities to travel comfortably. Top priority is given to the most senior patriots to make sure they have an opportunity to take part of this program. This experience included visits to the memorials built to honor their service and sacrifice. An outstand-
ing moment of every trip is the visit to the World War II Memorial. In addition, each trip includes a stop at the Marine Corps Iwo Jima Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery where one can see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Past Honor Flights have included stops at the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, and even the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. Upon their arrival at the Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport, a special welcome parade with Honor guards from several local police and fire agencies, bagpipes, patriotic music, and plenty of loved ones waving American flags greeted the WWII and Korean veterans as they were pushed in wheelchairs by Vietnam veterans. The Plantation Volunteer Fire Association has been a big supporter of the Honor Flight program. This year the Association had special T-shirts made to

honor the Veterans. Profits from the sales went to support the Honor Fight program. The highlight for the Plantation firefighters was meeting 96-year-old Wilbur Spangler who survived the raid on Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion. “It’s called Honor Flight,” stated Jon Hatch, Plantation Volunteer Fire Association President. “The truth is, the honor is all ours. They call us heroes, but that is nothing compared to who these heroes are.” Veterans are encouraged to register for flights at www.honorflightsouthflorida. org or by calling 855-359-1838. The PCPFL team strives to achieve excellence in every aspect of the patient healthcare process, from the preliminary screening to ongoing treatment, maintenance and support. A full line of Primary Care Specialties, including Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine are all offered creating a convenient one-stop office for all their patients’ medical needs. What specialties does your practice offer? We have a variety of specialists, including the areas of dermatology, cardiology, optometry, ophthalmology, podiatry, gastroenterology, and endocrinology. We see patients as young as 12 years old to those celebrating centennial birthdays.

Our air-conditioned company vans provide round-trip
non-emergency transport to any of our South Florida locations regardless of where the patient lives. For instance, a Hollywood patient can make an appointment in Aventura, or even Margate if that’s where they want to go. What services do you offer? Not a smoker? You Could Still Be at Risk for Lung Cancer There is a common misconception that if someone has never smoked that they aren’t at risk for lung cancer. While tobacco smoking is the number one cause, Bruno Bastos, MD Oncologist there are other Cleveland Clinic Florida factors that can result in the development of lung cancer. Lung Cancer Stigma Some in our society believe that diagnosis of lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke only. As a result, lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as patients with other types of cancer. “There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.”
Although smoking is certainly a contributing factor, the reality is that anyone can be exposed to second-hand smoke or other toxins, as well as have a family history of lung cancer, which can also trigger the disease. “You do not have to be a smoker in order to develop lung cancer, and it should be a major concern for everyone,” Dr. Bastos said.
therapies that target specific types of lung cancer cells.”
The stigma associated with lung cancer has also had a negative effect on research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure.
There have been some other innovations over the past few years as well. Development of screening tools such as CT scans aid in early detection of lung cancer, which Dr. Bastos said “could save tens of thousands of lives.”
“Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change, and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to share their stories.” Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment Despite the lack of funding for research, there has still been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” according to Dr. Bastos, “and genetic testing has helped researchers develop
Additionally, therapies already approved to treat skin cancer, are being considered for lung cancer as well. “Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, are also showing potential for treating lung cancer,” said Dr. Bastos.
Decrease Your Risk Even though you can develop the disease without having ever been a smoker, if you are someone who smokes, the sooner you quit, the better. Although smokers who have quit are still at an increased risk for lung cancer, the good news is that their risk decreases as the number of years they have been smokefree increases. The best advice is not to start smoking to begin with. For more information or to schedule a consultation, visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/lungcancer or call 800.639.DOCTOR today.

he Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation holds events all over the country to honor first responders, remember 9/11, and raise funds to build smart homes for catastrophically injured service members through the Building for America’s Bravest program. The Siller Family started the foundation to honor the memory of their brother, Stephen, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11th, 2001 after running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers to help save other’s lives. The goal is to continue Stephen’s legacy by supporting the nation’s first responders and service members as well as keep promises made by Americans after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. These promises are to pay homage to those who perished, and to never allow pride, heroism, and resilience displayed by Americans in the aftermath to be forgotten. Americans will be continually urged and reminded to honor those first responders who lost their lives on that fateful day, as well as those who were injured fighting for the country while celebrating and honoring their legacy forever. This year the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run
& Walk was planned to have as many as fifty events in more than twenty-five states. One being in Ft. Lauderdale, of course, where the Plantation Fire Department always participates. Each year firefighters, police officers, and their families gather in downtown Fort Lauderdale to make the 5K Run/Walk from the McKinney Tunnel on US 1 to the 110 Tower on Southeast 3rd Street. Although the event is not designed as a race, Plantation Firefighter Kelly LaCourse not only finished first among her age group, she also finished first among all women participants in the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk. LaCourse received a special acknowledgement for her achievement. “It’s not about where you finish,” said LaCourse. “It’s all about the camaraderie and remembering those who sacrificed.” In January of 2015, the Foundation raised over one million dollars to fully pay off the mortgages for two NYPD officers’ families.

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL
#Generosity – Plantation Resident’s Kindness is a Category 10

H
urricane Irma ripped through South Florida in early September leaving devastation and destruction in her wake. Although power was lost, landscapes destroyed, and homes were damaged, South Floridians were still fortunate to not have faced what could have been another disaster by Mother Nature. During the aftermath of cleaning up and rebuilding, communities came together to help each other. Despite all the havoc caused, Irma brought inspiration and kindness. She taught the world to give again.
Neighbors began helping neighbors just as they once did decades ago in a less complex time. One local resident, Chad Everett, owner of Galaxy Productions, was one individual who was inspired when he saw a friend’s post on Facebook. This “Hurricane Hero” in Palm Beach took 70+ foster kids and their chaperones from the SOS Children’s Village Florida into his $30 million mansion because they had to evacuate their shelter which lost power. His post stated that he needed help. Without hesitation, Everett instantly wanted to assist. Being in the event business for over 25 years, he went straight to his colleagues to see who else could lend a hand. Within minutes, the positive responses were overwhelming. He secured Sweet Cravings dessert truck to visit the children and distribute delicious ice cream treats. People came and gave strangers their love and support out of the kindness of their hearts, and just like that within 72 hours, the family served over 800 meals, entertained the appreciative children, and arranged for medical care. Always having a larger than life imagination, the response he witnessed sparked Everett to want to create something tangible for a huge audience. The love and passion he saw, he wanted to duplicate and make contagious, so he decided to take his actions to social media. The result, a Facebook page titled #Generosity. “We can all use positivity in our lives! Normally people don’t boast about the generous things they

do, but I believe that seeing and hearing about the generous and helpful things random people are doing for others helps motivate people to be generous themselves,” stated Everett. “I believe that positivity can compete with all of the negativity that is normally used on Facebook and in the media and create Chad Everett a happier more positive outlook on life and people in general.” The page encourages members to share things such as fundraisers, charities, non-profit events, donations made, a helping hand, or something positive they have witnessed or done. The public group allows everyone to add friends, spread good vibes, and the message of generosity. For more information and to be involved, please visit ww.facebook. com/#generosity.

Lights, Camera, Action … Plantation Teen Takes Center Stage as Ambassador for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts
CAN DO KID
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
Plantation native Libby Lapayowker was one of twenty-four selected to be a Teen Ambassador for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The 9th grade, Nova Southeastern University School student, was mesmerized the first time she stepped into a theatre and instantly knew she wanted to be a part of it. However, unlike many who enjoy the spotlight on stage, Libby prefers to be backstage. Each year only two dozen students are selected to be a Teen Ambassador for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. These chosen few will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the arts by attending performances and workshops presented at the Broward Center and their affiliated venues to enhance their knowledge of the arts. The students will be given complimentary tickets to see Broadway shows, opera, ballet, jazz and concerts while exploring and learning the behind the scenes operations of the performing arts. Libby’s introduction to technical theatre began in middle school. She was interested in makeup and costumes which provided her with the opportunity to truly see what happens behind-thescenes. The ambitious teen learned the entire theatrical process from constructing sets to designing lights and sound. After having a few productions under her belt, she desired more responsibility. The sound designer then allowed her to assist with operating the sound board, and she literally found her calling.
“Sitting behind the console, I felt like a puppeteer making the show move. I could hear the stage manager on my headset calling each cue for lights, sound, and scene change. I knew instantly, that I wanted to be the voice on the other end of the headset calling the show,” exclaimed Libby. “Luckily, in my field, there aren’t too many other students fighting for the position. By the end of eighth grade, I had stage managed three productions and even helped direct two of them.” The NSU School freshman has also been elected to be the Technical Representative on the Theater Arts Board where she will be responsible for organizing crew meetings and helping new students get involved in crew. Additionally, she earned the position of Stage Manager for the Fall High School Production of Orlando as well as the One Act Piece of Roots of Red for the District Thespian Competition in which many schools compete. “Being selected to be an Ambassador for the Broward Center, I hope to learn further in depth what it means to make a major production come to life, whether it is a Broadway show, Dance, or Orchestra performance,” added Libby. “I feel lucky to have found my passion so early. Typically, students my age aren’t given opportunities like this, most of our stage managers were juniors and seniors.”

HEALTH CARE
T
he issue of driving is one many seniors and their families will face. It is one that is often inevitable when there is a diagnosis of dementia. It is important to know that a person with dementia usually does not self-limit his/her own driving. And in almost every state, physicians are not mandated to report someone they feel is unsafe to drive. For those reasons, the burden often falls onto a family member to make the decision. When trying to decide if the person should continue to drive, there are many factors to consider other than memory. Families tend to focus on if the person remembers where they are going and are they at risk of getting lost. The solution is to allow driving to continue, but only to familiar locations. However, people with dementia experience deficits in several other areas that are key to driving. For example, it is common for a person to have problems with depth perception. This makes it difficult for the driver to determine how close other cars and objects are. Determining if there is time to pull out into traffic or turn before an approaching car reaches them are some of the issues faced when there is impaired depth perception. Decision making and the ability to anticipate events also becomes more problematic. A driver may see a ball roll into the road, but be unable to anticipate that a child could be running for it. Or he/she may be taxed with deciding quickly what to do when an unanticipated event does occur. Divided attention also can become challenging for a person with dementia. The ability to look at the speedometer and then back at the road can be difficult. The driver may find it challenging to continue to focus on driving, while giving attention to a bicyclist or pedestrian on the side of the road. In addition to problems due to dementia, there are normal changes that occur with aging that bring their own challenges. A decline in vision and hearing, decreased flexibility, and a slower reaction time are common changes that happen as a person ages. All key factors to a person being able to drive successfully. Regular inspections of your loved one’s car for dings, dents, or scratches may help to determine if there are issues, especially with depth perception. Talk to your loved one’s neighbors to determine if they have noticed any problems. And go for a drive with your loved one to observe any possible difficulties. Watch to see if they are signaling properly. Do they check thoroughly before changing lanes? Are they able to properly maintain their speed and the distance between cars? It is important to know that if a senior is involved in a car accident, he/she is more likely to suffer serious injuries than a younger driver. And statistics show that a senior citizen is at a higher risk of death when involved in a car crash, even one that appears minor. If you are concerned about your loved ones driving, please discuss this with his/her physician. Although a doctor is not mandated to report, many are more willing when they know the family is on board. In addition, explore the use of a driving assessment program and tools available which can help in determining abilities and limitations.

Broward Education Foundation Announces Plantation Resident as Hall of Fame Honoree SECTION NEWS SCHOOL HEAD
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
E
ach year, thousands of graduates from Broward County Public Schools move on to become teachers, entrepreneurs, business and civic leaders making significant contributions to the community. And each year, The Broward Education Foundation likes to recognize these distinguished alumni of Broward County Public Schools. These outstanding individuals were recently recognized at the Publix Super Markets Charities “2017 Hall of Fame Breakfast” presented by Memorial Healthcare System last month. This year’s JM Family Enterprises Inc. Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring an alumnus who has made Keith Koenig an indelible mark in the community, is Keith Koenig, president and CEO of City Furniture. Koenig graduated from Northeast High School in 1969 and has been a philanthropist and advocate for education and children for more than 40 years. City Furniture evolved from Waterbed City which was started in 1971 by Keith’s late brother. Under Keith’s leadership, City Furniture has evolved into a $330 million+ enterprise with 15 City Furniture and 11 Ashley Furniture HomeStores in South and Central Florida and a 900,000 square-foot headquarters and distribution facility in Tamarac.
“We are exceedingly proud of the remarkable accomplishments and unwavering dedication of our illustrious honorees-they are true role models for today’s students,” said Christina Fischer, chair of the Broward Education Foundation Board. “We appreciate the impact they have on our students, schools and community. It’s so important for us to pay it forward by inspiring, mentoring and supporting our students as they become the next generation of game changers.” Keith is active in many South Florida community organizations and currently serves as a board member of Broward Workshop, Museum of Discovery and Science and University of Florida Foundation Board and as a past board chair, serving on the Finance Committee and the Campaign Planning Committee. A highlight of his charitable support includes founding the Kevin Koenig Memorial Covenant House Cup Golf Tournament which is now in its 21st year and has raised more than $1.5 million to support Covenant House. Keith is an avid supporter of Camillus House, Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options, Angelica House, Urban League of Broward County, Provident Place, Holy Cross Hospital $1 Million pledge for the Blessed Beginnings Doreen Koenig Maternity Center, Ronald McDonald House, Conine Clubhouse and His House Children’s Home. Throughout his illustrious career, Keith has received local and national recognition, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the UF MBA Outstanding Alumnus Award and the Furniture Retailer of the Year Award. He also was made a Knight of St. Gregory by Pope John Paul II. “As a graduate of Floranada Elementary, Richards Jr. High and Northeast High school, I’m honored and proud to be selected for this award. Broward County has a great school system and, by every measure, we are getting better every day,” said Koenig. “We can be proud and brag on our teachers and administrators. We need to continue to support them and let them transform our kids to meet the challenges of the future.”

ow that everyone has settled back into the routine of school, it’s a good time to start thinking about those extracurricular programs. Students these days have so many options to fill their afternoons from sports and dance/cheer to school clubs and tutoring. However, for those that don’t want a long-term commitment, why not “check out” what your local library has to offer? The 61st Annual Plantation Volunteer Fire Association BBQ will be HOT! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or six decades the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association has hosted its annual Barbeque. This year the oldest and largest City-wide tradition will celebrate its 61st on Sunday, November 5th from noon until 5:00 pm at Pine Island Park which is located at 300 South Pine Island Road. The firefighters will begin cooking at four in the morning and continue throughout the day. The traditional menu features ribs, chicken, beans, and coleslaw. Each year the firefighters prepare more than 4,000 pounds of chicken and ribs, 750 pounds of coleslaw, 334 dozen dinner rolls, 70 industrial sized cans of baked beans and 334 dozen cookies for dessert.
Additionally, the shopping list includes more than 5,500 pounds of ice and 3,300 pounds of charcoal. There are a wide variety of beverages available for additional purchase. A special kid’s hot dog meal is also available instead of the ribs and chicken. It’s been known that Head Chef Barry Stearns has maintained the urban legend surrounding Former Mayor Frank Veltri’s “Secret Sauce.” Plantation residents are invited to come out and taste the notorious creation. The event will offer live music, kids’ games, bounce houses, raffle prizes, live demonstrations and so much more. The barbecue is held every year, rain or shine.

“Take-away” plates are also available. “The 61st Annual BBQ will be better than ever this year. There will be plenty of fun activities for the kids, and the event is a great way to support the men and women of the Plantation Volunteer Firefighter Association,” says Aston Bright, Plantation Fire Department Public Information Officer. The Plantation Fire Department has been serving the citizens of Plantation since its inception in 1957 when a group of 17 civic minded citizens conceived a volunteer fire department to serve the newly born community. It is an Insurance Service Office (ISO) Class 2 rated combination department meaning that personnel are part volunteer and part career. Plantation has the largest volunteer fire department in the State of Florida. Letters are mailed to every known resident in the City offering advance purchase of tickets at $12.00 for adults and $6.00 for children. Tickets may also be purchased by calling Fire Administration at 954-797-2150, or on Sunday, at the gate $15.00 for adults and $7.00 for children.

ASK THE EXPERT
I
t’s been noted that about 10 million women in the world are affected by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS. Although the cause of the health condition is unknown, it’s considered to be a hormonal issue. Some believe that environmental factors as well as genetics are the reason for the development. It’s also a leading cause of female infertility, and the primary cause of multiple symptoms that affect the body physically and emotionally. The syndrome is an issue in which a female’s hormones are out of balance which creates other problems such as irregular or missed menstrual cycles, weight gain, fatigue, unwanted hair growth, thinning hair, acne, pelvic pain, mood changes, and poor sleep patterns. Symptoms of PCOS may begin shortly after puberty, but can also develop during the later teen years and early adulthood. Because symptoms may be attributed to other causes or go unnoticed, PCOS may go undiagnosed for some time. Hormones involved in PCOS are androgens (also known as male hormones), insulin, and progesterone. The excess or lack of the proper amount of each is the primary cause for all the symptoms that occur in PCOS patients. Women with PCOS typically have irregular or missed periods because they are not able to ovulate. Although some women may develop cysts on their ovaries, many women do not which makes the name confusing. However, some women with PCOS grow small unharmful cysts on their ovaries which lead to the hormonal imbalances. PCOS has been linked to high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, and high cholesterol. If not treated, PCOS can lead to more serious health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke over time. There is no cure yet, but early diagnosis and treatment can help control the symptoms, decrease, and/or prevent long-term problems. Your physician may offer different medications to treat the symptoms. It’s also been found that losing as little as 5% excess weight through nutrition and exercise can help women ovulate more regularly and lessen other PCOS symptoms. The most common treatment is the birth control pill for those not seeking to become pregnant. Birth control pills regulate periods and lower androgen levels while protecting the inner lining of the uterus. Other prescription medications are also prescribed depending on each patient’s individual symptoms and needs. Vitamins, supplements, and other treatments such as acupuncture have been shown to have a positive outcome for patients suffering from PCOS.

BY E. LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF
I
rma was the first major hurricane to impact South Florida since Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Each storm teaches us something about preparation and provides us with an opportunity to learn and grow. Hurricane Matthew, last year, was a good practice run for this year. It reminded us about preparation, protection, and planning. So, while we were lucky that the bulk of Irma’s devastating winds and rain passed us by we are still reminded of a few things we may have forgotten since 2005. First, Storm Season doesn’t end until November 30th. Even though we made it through this one, storms can continue well past a calendar date. We must remain vigilant. Second, we must be prepared to maintain ourselves for at least three days. Even as Irma’s winds were blowing, we were getting calls from residents who lost power and made no provisions for food, water, or fuel for their vehicles or generators. Additionally, many people with complex medical needs assumed the local hospitals would simply serve as medical needs shelters. This created a major problem as Emergency Room beds were being taken up by people with no medical complaints while emergency patients were made to wait. This year the City of Plantation made extreme efforts to put emergency, preparation and recovery messages out in as many places as possible. Messages were sent out via Twitter, Facebook, the city website, 1620 AM, Plantation Information Radio, TV news crawlers, and our reverse 9-1-1 system. Even with all that some residents complained that they didn’t know what was going on. Make sure you have a way of watching, listening, or receiving emergency messages during a storm. Wilma taught us all about the need to protect infrastructure. Irma taught us more than we care to know about debris cleanup. Overall, I am proud Plantation’s residents. Wilma tried our patience and often with negative results. While frustrations mounted during the Irma cleanup, residents remained calm, patient, and always acted professionally which helps us get the job done. Hopefully we are done with storms for this year, but remember, it only takes one. So, beginning in May we will start reminding you again about planning, preparation, and protection. Stay safe, E. Laney Stearns Fire Chief For more information and safety tips, visit www.Plantation.org or Facebook.com/City of Plantation Fire Department.
