Your family doctor: The benefits of a primary care provider Cleveland Clinic Florida offers comprehensive primary care services for Weston and SW Broward families. As life changes, so do the healthcare needs for yourself and your loved ones. You may want to consider choosing a primary care physician – family medicine or internal medicine physician – who can be your partner in health and wellness. “We’re trained to provide comprehensive care for patients age six and up,” said Hermann Stubbe, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida family medicine Hermann Stubbe, MD physician who sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston Family Health Center. “We treat a variety of conditions – from allergies and ear infections to orthopaedic issues and women’s health.” Knows family history Many patients are unsure about health concerns and diseases in their family tree. Since a primary care physician often cares for a family from one generation to the next, they know the family’s medical history. “We often see grandparents, children and grandchildren. This aids in our ability to not only care for an individual, but to care for the family as a whole,” said Dr. Stubbe. No need for multiple physicians In most cases, family and internal medicine physicians can address multiple medical needs during an office visit or they can make referrals to the appropriate specialist(s), if necessary. “Over time, your primary care physician knows you well – including your health history, family history, and risk factors – so we can advocate Dunia Hernandez, MD for you and help you navigate the healthcare system,” explained Dr. Dunia Hernandez, a Cleveland Clinic Florida internal medicine physician who sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston main campus. Long-term, trusting relationships Patients are often too shy or embarrassed to talk about medical concerns or certain topics. “Since we have longstanding relationships with our patients, a degree of trust is established,” said Dr. Hernandez. It makes it easier to talk about issues when there’s a level of comfort and camaraderie.” To make an appointment with Dr. Stubbe, Dr. Hernandez or any other primary care physician at a convenient Cleveland Clinic Florida Weston location, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Appointment to make an appointment online. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers same-day appointments.

Amazing New Breakthrough

n America, we traditionally take time to reflect on life during November. We think about our families, our community, our country and the people we love. We are thankful for all these things and more. It is sometimes difficult to reflect on the good things in life. We live in an era of constant communication and conflict. Many popular media outlets capitalize on the things that divide us. At Our City we focus on the things that bring us together. We publish news about our community with a decidedly positive voice. You won’t see any opinion columns written to demonize one group of people or another. We believe that 100 people pulling on a rope in the same direction can accomplish anything, while 50 people pulling on each end of a rope can accomplish nothing. Check out The Our City Dining Guide in this issue and on our website. It’s a selection of our staff’s favorite restaurants from around the area. These are some of the best places to host a holiday party, enjoy Thanksgiving dinner, or to grab a quick bite with friends after work. You could even visit one of these restaurants with the people you love for no reason other than to give thanks you have them in your life.

Up in Flames – Get Ready for Plantation Volunteer Fire Association’s Backyard BBQ BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he largest and longest running city-wide oneday event is back again and promises to be even bigger and better. The Plantation Volunteer Fire Association will celebrate its 62nd annual barbeque on Sunday, November 4th at Pine Island Park, located at 300 South Pine Island Road. Gates open at 12:00 noon with opening ceremonies and a character parade at 12:30 pm. For over six decades the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association have followed the tradition as those that preceded them. Firefighters will begin cooking at four in the morning and will continue cooking throughout the day. The historic menu features ribs, chicken, beans, coleslaw, and dessert. Each year the firefighters prepare more than

4,000 pounds of chicken and ribs, 750 pounds of coleslaw, 334 dozen dinner rolls, 70 industrial sized cans of baked beans and 334 dozen cookies for dessert. Additionally, the shopping list includes more than 5,500 pounds of ice and 3,300 pounds of charcoal. There are a wide variety of beverages available for additional purchase. A special kid’s hot dog meal is also available instead of the ribs and chicken. It’s been said that, “The volunteer firefighters have been serving up a menu of the most amazing chicken and ribs this side of Broward Mall.” However, this year a new item is being featured which will have attendees begging for more. The ribs will be prepared with “Firehouse Dry Rub”, a special creation developed by the firefighters, making them extra moist and extra tasty. Of course, Frank Veltri’s “Secret Sauce” will still be a main condiment as Head Chef Barry Stearns has maintained the former mayor’s famous creation. The event will continue offering live music by the Boogie Brothers, bounce houses, vendor displays, cotton candy, raffle prizes, live demonstrations by the department, and

the much-requested EMS Division’s now famous corn on the cob. The annual event is held every year rain or shine. “We’ve made some major changes to the barbecue this year,” said Mark Watters, Barbecue Chairperson. “Even though we’ve kept the 62-year tradition alive, we have added several new features I believe our guests will really enjoy.” The Plantation Fire Department has been serving the citizens of Plantation since its inception in 1957 when a group of 17 civic minded citizens conceived a volunteer fire department to serve the newly born community. It is an Insurance Service Office (ISO) Class 2 rated combination department meaning that personnel are part volunteer and part career. Plantation has the largest volunteer fire department in the State of Florida. Ticket order forms were sent to every known household in the City. Early bird tickets are $15 for adults and $9 for children. They can also be purchased at the gate at $18 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets may also be purchased by calling Fire Administration at 954-797-2150 or visiting the website at www.plantation.org/psd/ Fire/fd.

t’s that time of year when everyone is preparing for the holidays and running around searching for the perfect presents for their loved ones. However, while many are doing just that more than 100 GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club members are busy preparing for the “36th Annual Antique & Vintage Show” to be held at Plantation’s Volunteer Park and Community Center. The annual event may be the ideal place to get a jump on holiday shopping and to find a unique gift for that hard-to-shop-for individual. Attendees and seasoned antique aficionados can expect to find vendors selling an assortment of antique items, china, paintings, glass, vintage clothing, metalwork, jewelry, brica-brac, a large variety of collectibles, and so much more. Club members will also be delighted to pose for photos

in their outfits from yesteryear as a fun event souvenir. “Our Antique & Vintage Show is a fun indooroutdoor exhibition, now in its 36th year, with something for everyone’s collecting interest from ‘A to Z’ which include antique pearlized pendants to massive elegantly carved artisan furniture and almost everything in between,” exclaimed Club President Helen Ackerman. “A well-loved highlight of each show are the home-made food and desserts available in the food court for eat-in or take out.” In 1984 the first show was held at Deicke Auditorium and has grown to be the organization’s major winter fund-raising events. Since the Club’s founding in 1949, Plantation Woman’s Club has strived to serve the Plantation community as their first public service priority. Throughout the years, they have aided police, fire, and other public service sectors of the city to help make Plantation the best place to live, play, and work. The Club is noted for its annual award of four-year university scholarships (which proceeds from this twoday event benefit), all the fountains in Plantation, donations to hundreds of

charitable organizations over the years, civic improvement projects and community involvement. The members have always looked to maximize volunteer efforts to enrich the community by taking on beneficial fund-raising projects such as this annual event. The Plantation Woman’s Club is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) representing women in the United States and all over the world. Their mission is first and foremost to support the local community. “We hope to have even more foreign travelers attending our Antique-Vintage Show than last year. It’s Time to Stop and Smell the Orchids BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

n early October The Plantation Orchid Society had their annual auction at Plantation’s Deicke Auditorium. For over 5 decades the club has been an essential part of the community by educating those who share a love of this hobby. The diverse group of enthusiastic gardeners consists of those new to gardening, those with years of experience, and those who are certified Master Gardeners. “We try to provide guidance for our members and nurture the love of orchids in our community,” stated Angela Puca, Plantation Orchid Society Public Relations Officer. “Our society is 50 years old and the auctions have taken place almost from its start. The camaraderie that exists between the members is genuine and quite enjoyable.” The annual event is the organization’s only annual fundraiser in which proceeds allow the group to pro-

vide interesting speakers for their members at their monthly meetings. Each speaker shares their unique expertise and knowledge with the dedicated members. Topics include planting, repotting, pest elimination, proper care and maintenance, propagation and cross breeding, orchid selection, and more. Additionally, raffles and refreshments are always a bonus to each meeting. “The proceeds of the auction are fundamental to our society so that we can continue to provide orchid education, care, culture and conservation,” said Rose Maytin Plantation Orchid Society President. This year’s event did not disappoint. There was an outstanding selection of orchid plants, and not one plant was left at the end of the evening. The bids were reasonable, but for those not interested in bidding, orchids were priced for sale. Delectable home-baked goods kept attendees happy as well.

Maytin is not only the Society President, but she performed as a natural auctioneer. Member Corky Llewelyn built a 7x7 wooden rack to hang plants on which was snatched up quickly at a bargain price. The board of the Society works like a well-oiled machine due to Treasurer Beverly Warde’s phenomenal organizational skills coupled with the friendliness and team spirit of its members. “From time to time, I would glance at the crowd of bidders and everyone seemed to be smiling. Our President not only auctioned the orchids, but she entertained everyone also with her quick wit and refreshing sense of humor. This was a fun evening had by all which gets better every year,” added Puca. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month from 6:45 pm to 9:00 pm at Deicke Auditorium, 5701 Cypress Road in Plantation. If anyone would like more information on Plantation Orchid Society, please call Phyllis Durst at 954-584-4796.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Lee Nails & Spa

‘Tis the Season for Safety BY CHIEF HOWARD HARRISON his month starts the official shopping season for the upcoming holidays. Despite your long list of things to do, safety at the malls, grocery stores, and gas stations should always be a priority Prevent yourself from becoming a victim by following safety tips for the upcoming season (and every day). ▸▸ Pay attention to your surroundings - When walking to and from a place of business, make sure you walk close to the parked cars with your handbag and packages near the cars. It is very easy for cars coming down the parking lot to open their windows and grab your purse and packages. Fanny packs are a better idea. If you can put a shirt over the pack, it’s even better. Men carry your wallet in a front pocket and not a back pocket. It’s much easier to be pick-pocketed from behind rather than the front. Do not carry every credit card you own - Carry only the credit cards that you will be using when you go shopping. Clean out everything you don’t need, i.e., grandchildren’s pictures, large amounts of cash, extra keys, so if your wallet does get stolen, it’s less calls to the credit card companies, and those precious mementos and pictures won’t be lost forever. It is always better to use a credit card rather than a debit card - You cannot replace your money lost with a debit card, however, you can call your credit card company and tell them your card has been stolen. You are not responsible for lost or stolen credit card charges if you call them immediately. If you have to use a debit card, make sure you cover your hand when entering your pin number. Be careful of people using their camera phones. They may be trying to record your numbers. Don’t buy more than you can carry comfortably - Do not carry packages, put them in the trunk, and then go back for more. Thieves are out there, and they are watching. Everything can be gone by the time you come back. Don’t accept help from strangers. Do not put large ticket items in your trunk - Don’t stop to eat and think your stuff will still be there when you get out. Never let your debit or credit card leave your sight - When you are at an unfamiliar restaurant or store, the best thing you can do is follow the merchant to the register to see where exactly your credit/debit card is going. The information can be transmitted to another person who can immediately start using the credit or debit card numbers. Don’t have your valuables exposed while pumping gas – Lock your car doors too, even if you never leave your car’s perimeter. Send packages to a place with someone to accept them - As more people order merchandise online, thieves are following delivery trucks and grabbing boxes after they are delivered.

American Heritage School Leads Country in National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists BY TERRY JAILLET

A

merican Heritage School (AHS), in Plantation, has the highest number of National Merit Semifinalists of any private school in the country. It is also has the more Semifinalists than any other high school in Florida for the 9th consecutive year. Seventy seniors at the school were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) this year. In fact, one in four of the Class of 2019 is a nation-

ally recognized scholar. “American Heritage has taught me you can be a big fish in a big pond, and you can get ahead and learn so much,” said AHS senior Eric Bazail. “The rigor that is expected of us, the collaborative aspect in all my classes and the incredible resources available at Heritage have helped me become much more knowledgeable and a better student.” The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.6 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/ NMSQT in their respective states. About half of the Semifinalists go on to win

scholarships. The NMSC will choose the winners of the $2,500 scholarships from the pool of finalists in the spring. Ten of the Semifinalists are residents of Plantation, including: • Sydni Josowitz • Emily Namm • Kaitlyn Seese • Thomas Windisch • Daniel Zarfjian • Marcelo Beretta • Alejandro Dominguez • Thea McKenna • Maria Whiting • Daniel Zintsmaster American Heritage High School Principal, Elise Blum, commented, “It is quite an accomplishment to be among the top 1% of high school students in the entire nation, and I hope this recognition empowers them to keep exceeding the potential in college and in their future careers.” For more information about the National Merit Scholarship Program visit www.nationalmerit.org. Queens and Kings of All Ages Gathered for the Mayor’s Annual Chess Challenge BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he game of chess is one of the world’s most popular games, played by millions worldwide in various settings. This classic game of the mind is played everywhere and gaining more exposure with chess clubs popping up all over. Children are challenged and grow and develop mentally. Chess is a fun game for students of all ages. In countries where chess is offered widely in schools, students exhibit excellence in the ability to recognize complex patterns. Studies consistently show that playing the game improves reading, memory, problem-solving skills, and concentration. It also teaches students planning, foresight, and utilizes both sides of the brain. Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan saw

the importance and need and spearheaded “The Mayors’ Chess Challenge” along with other mayors throughout Broward County. The City launched the fifth-annual edition of the series at the Sunrise Civic Center in late September after students reacclimated back into school. Sunrise was named “Chess City of the Year” for 2015 by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), joining New York City, San Francisco, and other large communities that have earned the prestigious title. “Our focus must be on developing the critical thinking skills necessary for the next generation of scientists, doctors, educators, entrepreneurs, thinkers and leaders because they face some daunting global challenges,” explained Mayor

Ryan. “Through the vision of the Commission, City staff, and our collective efforts, we are seeing young minds develop confidence in their abilities and build upon inspirational dreams by becoming great thinkers. Along the way, this cross-generational effort is resulting in more chess play in our parks, restaurants and homes, and throughout the entire county.” Elected officials, community leaders, families, and students came out to support and celebrate the anticipated annual endeavor. The series always provides an opportunity for players of all ages, novices and experts alike to participate. Instructors from the Sunrise Center for Excellence in Chess were on hand to

assist those new to the game. The event featured refreshments, a display of exotic chess sets, and an appearance by Florida Panthers mascot Stanley C. Panther. Sunil Weeramantry, renowned chess coach and author of “Great Moves: Learning Chess Through History”, attended, and all participating students received a free ChessKid.com membership. Participants also received a Mayors’ Chess Challenge Passport that can be stamped at each event they attend during the school year. Those with perfect attendance will receive a prize at the end of the season. n For the full schedule of dates of “The Mayors’ Chess Challenge” or more information on the City’s free open-play sessions, please visit www. sunrisefl.gov/chess.

Plantation Educator Inducted in Broward Education Foundation’s Hall of Fame BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S

ix graduates of Broward County Public Schools who are community luminaries and champions in education were inducted into Broward Education Foundation’s Hall of Fame during the Publix Super Markets Charities 2018 “Hall of Fame Breakfast” presented by Memorial Healthcare System last month at First Baptist FTL - Global Grille. Amongst the five others who received the notable Bank of America awards was Michael J. Ramirez, Cadre Director of the Office of School & Performance Accountability for Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) and proud Western High School graduate, class of 1991. He was one of the three who received the Charter Schools of Excellence Education Achievement Award for his dedication to a career in public education. Ramirez started his career as an Athletic Director and Social Studies teacher at Dade Christian School before moving over to Broward County. He began teaching social studies at J.P. Taravella High School and then became Assistant Principal and then Principal at Coral Glades High School before advancing to his current position within BCPS. Additionally, the ambitious educator is an adjunct professor at

Barry University in the Educational Leadership Department and holds numerous accolades. For six years now, Ramirez has held the directorial position where he is the Principal Supervisor in the nation’s 6th largest school district serving 275,000 students PK-12. His primary responsibilities include increasing academic achievement, graduation rates, college/career readiness, and overall school culture. Ramirez’s accomplishments are many in such a short period of time for a position of this magnitude. From leading a strategic initiative monitoring students on-track for graduation and developing and facilitating professional learning for principals with district divisions including Academics, Human Resources and Talent Development to increasing student achievement on End of Course (EOC) exams in Algebra and Geometry by realigning the student course progressions and redesigning the schedule for all high schools to include a personalization period designed to better meet and support the academic and social-emotional needs of students, this tenacious leader has had astounding results. In lieu of its annual Lifetime Achievement Award, this year Broward Education Foundation honored those lost in the February 14th tragedy with the JM Family

Enterprises, Inc. Special Tribute to the “Marjory Stoneman Douglas 17 Fallen Eagles”. “Each year it is our privilege to recognize some of the most exemplary, accomplished and distinguished graduates of Broward County Public Schools,” said Shea Ciriago, Executive Director of Broward Education Foundation, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. “We take great pride in welcoming these inspiring leaders into the Hall of Fame class of 2018. They are truly making a difference in our community and in education.”

CAN DO KIDS

These Girl Scouts Sure Know How to Horse Around BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

lthough everyone knows that Girl Scouts are synonymous with cookies, these young leaders of tomorrow are actively involved in the community with many other projects before and after the infamous cookie sale. Six Juniors from Troop 10707 recently participated in a project earning them a Bronze Award. The Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards are accomplished when the girls have learned to develop a concept from paper into production. The Bronze Award may be earned as a second year Junior after one receives a Journey Award. Each level and award

requirement expand along with the girls’ age and scouting experience. These ambitious and caring fifth graders, under the leadership of Laura Weiss and Monica Terrazas, decided since they love animals and enjoy drawing and painting that they could perhaps combine them. After much discussion and research, they learned that the Peaceful Ridge Rescue in Davie needed assistance. The non-profit organization provides much needed medical and dental care, rehabilitation, and adoption services for rescued horses. Besides needing necessary supplies and “Forever Homes” for their horses, the facility was in need of a picnic table for volunteers and a little “TLC” for the horses’ paddocks. The girls knew exactly what to

do, so they started a supplies collection by placing receptacles in popular area feed and supply shops. They then participated in the Plantation Historical Museum Flea Market by making bake sale and other handmade items to raise funds to purchase what they needed to bring their project to fruition. “For me, the best part of this project was getting to see the horses at Peaceful Ridge. The ranch was a very peaceful environment. The people were very caring towards the horses. I liked seeing how the horse were still loved and taken care of,” expressed Sianna. “I learned that helping others makes you feel really good.” Twelve horses were lucky recipients of hand-painted name tags for their

paddocks, and volunteers are now able to enjoy a painted “patchwork style” picnic table when visiting the center courtesy of the girls’ creativity and efforts. “With this project our girls learned about horses, what they need, and the rescue and how hard they work. But more importantly they started a project that was important to them, took it step by step according to their plan and finished it,” exclaimed troop co-leader Laura Weiss. “I hope that they are truly proud of their accomplishments. Before we delivered everything to Peaceful Ridge, I looked at everything they did, and it was so beautiful, so pure and I wondered if they truly realized how really good it all was.”

Peace, Love, and Girl Scouts – Two Sisters Create Silver Award Project BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

wo sisters, Constance and Victoria, from Girl Scout Troop #10707 recently completed their Silver Award Project. The prestigious award is achieved when a group of two to three girls create a project that will help the community immediately and for many more years to come. Additionally, it must integrate an educational component to serve a purpose. The ambitious duo wanted to create a “Peace Garden” because they wanted teens and children to have a place to go to express themselves and “let things go”. The garden serves as a positive space to relax and to reflect. A chalkboard sits next to the flower bed so free expression can also be utilized. Everyone is encouraged to enjoy the garden which was installed at the Plantation Historical Museum.

“This project is very important for our society because of the increased number of teens/kids that are depressed or that have feelings of anxiety. Also, teens are experiencing more and more feelings to want to commit suicide than ever before,” said the girls’ mother and troop leader Monica Terrazas. “In Girl Scouts we promote a lot about helping throughout our community. I love that because we are teaching all our girls something very important that will follow them forever. Laura Weiss, my co-leader, and I started this troop in 2010 with less than ten girls, now we have thirty-three that love every moment of being part of something so wonderful.” The idea for this project came from personal experience. Unfortunately, both girls went through extremely difficult times during their middle school years. One was bullied in the 6th grade which left her insecure and afraid. She became so depressed that she even wanted to commit suicide. She is currently a freshman in high school and thriving in her new school. The other was also very depressed last year but doing much better now. “You can’t get better in the same environment you got sick in, stated Constance. “The biggest threat to

our planet is the belief that someone else will save it,” added Victoria. “My girls’ personal experiences and triumphs are why they recognized the need to provide help through the peace garden as well as with the ‘I Can’ campaign. There is nothing but your inner strength to make you fight back to survive,” exclaimed Terrazas. Enjoy the Peace Garden at The Plantation Historical Museum which is located at 511 N. MESSAGE FROM FIRE CHIEF

A Swan Song: A Bid Farewell BY E. LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF

T

hirty-seven years is a long time to do anything, but when you love what you do, the years fly by like milliseconds. This could be said of my career with the Plantation Fire Department (PFD). I have announced my retirement from the department effective November 1st as I will be moving on to new and unique challenges. However, I look back on almost four decades of service, both as a volunteer, and later a career member of the Fire Department, and I am satisfied with what we have achieved. I joined the Plantation Fire Department in 1981 after having served five years as a member of the Peters Road Volunteer Fire Department. Today, Plantation can boast one of the most technologically advanced and mechanized fire departments in the country. Yet, we still hold on to the volunteer spirit of neighbor helping neighbor that founded the organization more than sixty years ago. As I sit here and clean out my desk, I think about

our many achievements. We have built a roster of more than 200 active volunteers and accrued a waiting list, making Plantation the largest volunteer fire department in Florida. We have taken our commercial insurance rating, known as ISO, to a two (2) which is almost unheard of for a volunteer fire department. Thanks to your support of the bond, we are modernizing all our facilities to reduce energy and maintenance costs to provide our citizens with better, more efficient services. We have added a Public Affairs Division which is responsible for all community outreach, recruitment, and media activities. We have also taken great strides to make our Emergency Management function FEMA compliant, so we receive maximum reimbursement for monies expended after a storm or other declared emergencies. We have also worked very hard to be compliant

with NFPA standards. This allows us to operate well within national standards and recommendations and ensures we maintain or exceed those standards in all our functions and activities. Finally, earlier this year we started the process of instituting the first Master Plan for the Fire Department. The plan is expected to be completed by early 2019 and will set in motion a pathway to the future for both the PFD and the City. By the time you read this, I will have completed my tenure with the Plantation Fire Department and there will be a new chief at the helm. I wish only the best for all members of the department as they move forward and only the best for our citizens. It has been an honor and pleasure serving all of you. Stay well and stay safe, E. Laney Stearns Fire Chief For more information and safety tips, visit www.Plantation.org or Facebook.com/City of Plantation Fire Department.

Heel and Arch Pain in Adults BY DR. JOHN GOODNER

M

any adults suffer from plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. Regardless of your age or activity level, this condition is very prevalent and can become debilitating if not treated early. What causes plantar fasciitis? Overuse or excessive activity over a short period of time is a common culprit. Many patients with plantar fasciitis have flat or high arched feet. Many active adults neglect a stretching program leading to tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, resulting in increased strain on the plantar fascia. Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot for prolonged periods of

time can aggravate the plantar fascia. Certain activities that require repetitive heel lift (yoga, lunges, calf raises and elliptical) can lead to inflammation of the heel as well. How do I know if I have plantar fasciitis? Many patients state that their pain occurs first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground; then with walking the pain usually diminishes. They also experience pain when getting up in the middle of the night. Pain often occurs after sitting for a prolonged period of time or getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel can occur later. Many patients experience extreme tenderness to touch in the heel or arch region, however, swelling and discoloration are almost never seen. There is a common association with lower back pain.

How can I treat plantar fasciitis? Avoiding going barefooted and using good supportive shoes is a great place to start. For women, a small heel or wedge is best; the heel must always be higher than the toes. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. Cortisone injections will immediately lessen the pain and local inflammation. Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) will permanently support the foot and prevent re-injury. Frequently stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is essential. Progress can be maintained by splinting the foot at night to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot may be necessary. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections and Shockwave therapy are available if pain persists. Minimally invasive surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the

ligament from the heel. The prognosis is excellent in most cases when a treatment plan is followed. n Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults. Overbite vs Overjet - What Orthodontists are Evaluating BY DR. IAN LIEBERMAN, DMD, MSD alocclusion refers to any bite abnormality, and there are several different types. The two most common are overbites and overjets which are two measurable attributes of anyone’s bite. Although these two terms are often used interchangeably, there are significant differences between them. Defining an Overbite In short, an overbite refers to the vertical positioning of the front teeth. When closed down naturally, the upper teeth should slightly overlap approximately onethird of the lower teeth. However, some patients have an overlap that measures much deeper. In fact, in some severe cases, the lower incisions actually touch the roof of the mouth and irritate the gum tissue behind the upper front teeth. What Causes an Overbite? The majority of the time, an overbite is the result of an upper jaw that is overdeveloped or a lower jaw that is underdeveloped. Of course, genetics play a role. If an immediate family member has an overbite, there is a higher probability that you do, as well. Treatments for Overbite Because an overbite can be skeletal in nature, the condition could sometimes not treatable with braces alone. In those cases, corrective jaw surgery is required to address the problem. Typically, oral surgery is performed during or prior to placement of traditional orthodontic braces. It is important to note, however, that if an overbite is diagnosed in childhood, early orthodontic treatment may eradicate the need for surgery later in life. Defining an Overjet Commonly called “buck teeth”, this condition is often mistakenly referred to as an overbite. However, in contrast to an overbite that refers to a vertical issue, an overjet measures the horizontal relationship of the upper and lower front teeth. When the upper front incisors protrude or stick out, it is an overjet. Unfortunately, this type of malocclusion places individuals at a much higher risk for dental trauma and damage. When the lower incisors protrude forward, it is a negative overjet and could also be skeletal in nature. What Causes Overjet? As with most dental conditions, the presence of an overjet could be hereditary. However, in many cases, childhood habits are to blame. These may include prolonged pacifier or bottle used, tongue-thrusting, or thumb-sucking. All of these can push the teeth forward over time. Treatments for Overjet Mild cases of overjet may be addressed with cosmetic procedures, such as dental bonding or porcelain veneers. However, many cases require orthodontic treatment. At our practice, both of these conditions and many others can be treated with braces or clear aligner therapy such as Invisalign®. If you notice that your teeth do not fit together properly when you close down, you may have a form of malocclusion. Whether you have an overbite, overjet, or another type of bite issue, it is important to have a comprehensive assessment as soon as possible with a qualified professional.

Fighting the “Holiday Blues”: How to Combat Anxiety and Depression During the Holidays BY DR. JESSICA PETERSON, D.O., PSYCHIATRIST

I

t is not uncommon to experience low mood (depression) or increased stress (a cause of anxiety) over the holidays in the winter months. In psychiatry, this is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Why does this happen? ► There are increased sources of stress during the holidays, such as: parties, shopping, cleaning, entertaining, finances, being around family, or being alone. ► Increased stress is a risk factor for depression and anxiety, due to its effects on the sympathetic nervous system.

What are the signs? ► Feeling sad, depressed, or discouraged. ► Loss of interest in once pleasurable activities. ► Feeling guilty. ► Lack of energy. ► Difficulty concentrating. ► Eating more or less than usual. ► Feeling slow or restless. ► Having trouble sleeping or sleeping more than usual. ► Increased physical symptoms, such as pain, headaches, or GI disturbances. Why should I care? While slight mood fluctuations and increased stress can be very normal, it is important to recognize when they are more than just “normal stress”. If you are having a hard time functioning, or find it difficult to get through the day, you might be experiencing “Seasonal Affective Disorder”. If you have any of the above symptoms that are present year-round, this may indicate Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). If you experience one or more of the above symptoms, it is recommended you speak with your healthcare provider. If you ever experience intrusive thoughts of death, or the desire to harm yourself, it is important you present to the nearest emergency room. These symptoms are considered psychiatric emergencies, and they warrant immediate treatment. What can I do about it? ► Minimize the sources of stress. Do not feel obligated to host parties if you don’t want to, and don’t spend outside of your means. Reach out to friends and family for help if you need it. Most importantly, know your limitations and when to say “no”. ► Talk to your healthcare provider. A quick screening can identify if your symptoms are related only to the holiday season (Seasonal Affective Disorder), or if they cause issues year-round (Major Depressive Disorder). ► Ask your primary care provider to refer you to a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists are specially trained to differentiate various forms of stress/depression and recommend appropriate treatment modalities. ► Get treatment! If you ever feel like you are dealing with too much, or you just don’t feel like yourself, this is the time to get help! “Treatment” means anything from psychotherapy, to lifestyle changes, learning coping mechanisms, and trying medications to help combat depression. Your psychiatrist is the best resource to determine which treatment is best for YOU. ► Most importantly, don’t feel as if you are “weird” or alone! Studies show that approximately 25% of people in the United States suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. Of these individuals, 50% may go on to develop Major Depressive Disorder. The sooner you seek treatment, the better the prognosis.

Animal name & breed • Age and gender of animal Favorite person • Favorite toy Likes & dislikes • Favorite thing to do • Last seen Cody is a male Australian Labradoodle that we feel so lucky to call our own since the day we picked him up as baby at the Ft Lauderdale airport. He is 2.5 years old and very much has the best disposition of any dog I know or have ever had.His favorite people are his human siblings. Both Rachel and Sammy have Cody’s attention most of the time, but especially when they arrive at the house they are greeted with the biggest kisses and jumps and always a tennis ball dangling from his mouth. Cody’s favorite toy is his tennis ball (there are several all over the yard and under the couches and beds). This goes hand in hand with his favorite activity which is playing catch over and over and over in the backyard. And it goes without saying Cody as evident in this photo ….he is a huge Canes fan.
