Thanksgiving Traditions, Old and New

Amazing New Breakthrough

BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET

T

hanksgiving has grown to mean so many different things in America. It, of course, started as a somber day to give thanks for all that we have and to celebrate a bountiful harvest. Tradition suggests that the American holiday commemorates a turkey dinner shared by English Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag tribe somewhere near Cape Cod in 1621. While the historical accuracy of this story may be hard to determine, the underlying message is worth remembering. Giving thanks often gets overlooked these days. Our always-on, always-connected and increasingly adversarial culture becomes consuming. We see young people glued to their phones, older folks angry about the latest political developments on cable news, and parents frustrated and tired, stretched thin between work, kids’ activities and more. For these reasons, it’s more important than ever to spend time with family, friends and neighbors. Giving thanks and sharing with our loved ones and neighbors is really what the holiday is all about. There are few groups in history more distinctly different than 15th-century English religious refugees and Native Americans. Yet, they could sit down together for a meal and give thanks for all they had. Maybe we should do the same.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland BY BEVERLY PERKINS

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!” ―Dr. Seuss

T

he quote by the famous author couldn’t be any truer at The Plantation Historical Museum (PHM). The holidays at Plantation’s favorite museum are all about community and tradition; something that cannot be purchased from a store. The anticipated “Winter Wonderland” exhibit has become a long-standing tradition for many families. Regardless of age, everyone is always excited to see what’s new each year. This year, the PHM is excited to announce that their 34th annual “Winter Wonderland” exhibit will open on Saturday, November 16th at noon. The dedicated staff works tirelessly to create new experiences at the Christmas extravaganza. For 6 weeks during the summer, students earned service hours while crafting ornaments out of wine corks, yarn and felt. These ornaments are then sold during the Christmas exhibit and help support projects of the Society such as the Betty Cobb Scholarship Fund, in honor of the volunteer that previously ran the student program.

“The kids we had this summer were fantastic and we hope that visitors like what they made. They all worked really hard. They went through a lot of glue,” laughed Lauren Bhaggan, PHM assistant. Over 45 trees are decorated in different themes. The usual favorites remain to be Disney and Star Wars/ Star Trek trees. However, new additions such as the American States and the winner of last year’s contest, The Sweets Tree are expected to be big contenders. A yearly contest allows visitors to choose a new themed tree which will be added to the Christmas exhibit the following year. This year will be a Battle of the Books, visitors can select their favorite theme from Harry Potter, Dr. Seuss, and Comics books. While visitors peruse the exhibit, it’s hoped that they also look at the reasonably-priced gift shop. There’s a Plantation artist section of hand-painted porcelain jewelry, handmade shell ornaments, and artwork. The Plantation Historical Society runs the gift shop and all profits benefit the museum. Special events are scheduled during the entire

month of December including a visit from Santa. Please be sure to check the website for all the details. “The Museum staff always looks forward to ‘Winter Wonderland’. It’s one of our favorite exhibits. A big thank you to all of our volunteers for decorating all these trees,” exclaimed Curator John Feeney. The Plantation Historical Museum is located at 511 North Fig Tree Lane, Plantation. Hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10:00-12:00pm and 1-4:30pm. Free admission, donations always appreciated. For more information, please call 954-797-2722 or visit www. Plantation.org/museum and plantationhistoricalsociety.com.

On a Happy Note – Local Musician Visits Students BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S

unrise and Plantation music students received such treat when Alyssa Conde recently stopped by their schools to pay a visit before her concert at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre. The Sunrise-raised internationally recognized concert pianist adjusted her flight to make sure she could stop Piper High School, Plantation High School, Sawgrass Elementary, and Bair Middle Schools. The former graduate of Sawgrass Elementary and Bair Middle School partnered with The City of Sunrise to coordinate her visits. She wanted to take her time to personally meet with the students in music programs where she shared her talent and offered advice, encouragement, and mentorship to those with musical ambitions. Conde has entertained audiences across the U.S. and Europe, including prominent festivals such as the University of Florida’s Summer Academy, Brevard Music Festival, The Chamber Music Institute in Lincoln Nebraska, The International Academy of Music in Cremona, Italy, The InterHarmony International Music Festival in Arcidosso Tuscany, Italy, and the Golandsky Institute Piano Symposium of 2018 in Portland, Oregon. In 2012 she was selected to perform at the Palm Beach International Piano Festival representing the USA. Conde earned a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from Florida Atlantic University and a Master’s Degree and Artist Diploma in Piano Performance from Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts. Her solo piano repertoire features works by iconic classical composers, including Schubert, Mozart, and Debussy. She also currently offers private piano lessons and serves on the Piano Faculty at the Chicago School of Music.

More than three dozen students from the Sunrise and Plantation schools attended her “Life Through 88 Keys: Alyssa Conde in Concert,” performance at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre. “Sharing the beauty of music with my community, family and friends is a gift. Music began for me in Sunrise, Florida, and while I am fortunate to travel, learn and perform in different parts of the world, there is no place like home,” exclaimed Conde.

O

BY BEVERLY PERKINS ver five years ago, L’ACQUA Nail Spa was one of the first salons in South Florida to offer disposable pedicure basin liners, nail files, buffers, and foot pumice stones. Additionally, to ensure there is no cross-contamination, they use a medical autoclave to sterilize their implements. Sterilization and cleanliness, among the numerous services available, are what set the premier nail spa apart from others in the area. Clients adore their wide selection of unique pedicures such as the signature “Jelly Pedi”. The relaxing treatment moisturizes the skin and soothes dry, achy feet. It has aloe and fragrant oils to effectively reduce sweating and odor. Other popular menu items are facials, permanent makeup, microblading, eyelash extensions, and of course dipping powder manicures. L’ACQUA uses the best products in the industry such as Chanel ®, OPI ®, Color Club ®, Essie ®, and Kiara Sky ®. Clients can always be sure that the latest colors, brands, and trends are always available. Complimentary beverages including wine are also offered to make everyone who enters feel right at home. Sandy Nguyen, owner of L’ACQUA Nail Spa took some time to answer some commonly asked questions about her salon.

Get Perfectly Polished at L’ACQUA Nail Spa What is the most popular service currently? Our most popular service is dipping powder. Dipping powder is an alternative to gel polish and acrylic. It is applied with or without tips and is gentle on the nails especially for those who are sensitive to the drill used for acrylics. An adhesive is polished on and dipped into the color powder of your choice. Clients can choose from over 200 dipping powder colors. If they are going for a classic French-look, we also have French dipping powder. Microshading has also been trending, can you tell us more about it? Microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo that creates hyper-realistic hair strokes to fill in gaps, make brows look fuller, or to create an eyebrow with more or less of an arch. Microshading is when we add shading to the body and tail of the brows for a more fuller look. Since microblading can’t fill in all the gaps by the procdure itself. With the latest technique, we use a tool that measures the distance between the eyes to determine the length and where the arch of your brows should be. We work together to perfect this to your preference in thickness and arch. We then use a photo program to make sure

18 NOVEMBER 2019 | OUR CITY PLANTATION | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

both brows are even before we begin the process. A noticeable difference will be readily apparent immediately following the microblading How much does it cost? It is $500 for an initial session and if a touch up is needed between 4-8 weeks, it is included. How long is the recovery or healing time? CAN DO KIDS

Troop #10707 Girl Scouts Kept Their Promise BY BEVERLY PERKINS

N

ot too long ago, two high school girls with a vision completed a project which earned them the coveted “Girl Scout Silver Award”. For a Girl Scout Cadette to achieve the prestigious title they must make a change for the better. The opportunity to do so allows scouts to show their leadership skills and make a difference in the world. Giuliana Silva and Zoe Fazio of Girl Scout Troop 10707 decided that they wanted to enhance the playground for the educational benefit of the kids at an area school. Upon a previous visit, the ninth-grade girls noticed the sand covered sidewalks and the lack of toys and games which were not acceptable for the children who played at the K-2 playground at Stephen Foster Elementary School. It was at that moment that the “Stephen Foster Educational Enhancement Project” came to life. The ambitious duo planned to create a

garden to brighten the area and teach the students how plants grow. The interactive garden would be a handson learning experience just the same.

Next they wanted to paint the cement area under the pavilion and sidewalk area with educational improvements. Lastly, they wanted to have an organizational system for the students to

place their toys. “The reason I’m so passionate about this project is because I went to Stephen Foster Elementary. Prior to the project, the K-2 playground area had appeared neglected and not the same as remembered it. On top of that, my 5-year-old cousin goes to school there so I will be able to see how this project directly impacts the students. To be able give back to my community, teachers, and all the staff by restoring a place that means a lot to me is one of the many reasons I am so passionate about this project,” explained Silva. Four educational enhancements were created which included three different numbered hopscotch courses and an ABC caterpillar. These colorful designs are great examples that learning happens outside the classroom as well as inside. Students will be able to water their garden and watch it grow and learn to clean up and organize their belongings. “The finished product is pretty

amazing, the gift that they have given the students and school tremendous, but their hard work and perseverance is the important part. I am very proud of Giuliana and Zoe for making the commitment to this project, for putting in the hours necessary toward completing this project,” exclaimed proud troop leader Laura Weiss. “Not only will these alterations to the pavilion area provide as educational tools, they will encourage the kids to stop bringing sand onto the cement only for the janitors to sweep it away at night,” added Fazio.

Local Humanitarian Gives “Back” in a Big Way BY BEVERLY PERKINS

ot too long ago, Tamara Miami-Dade passing out food and basic Callins-Young created a social supplies to those on street corners. media page on Facebook titled Her latest endeavor has been creat“Random Acts of Kindness -RAOK” in ing backpacks for the people in Abaco an effort to teach her children how important it is to show kindness to everyone especially those less fortunate. The page has since inspired others to get involved and build a positive platform for future generations. Although Callins-Young says she cannot cook, she wanted to feed the homeless. Pasta was always a meal she made well, so she managed to serve up a spaghetti dinner from the back of her truck. Since that day her humanitarian deeds have not ceased. She travels around South Broward County and who lost everything due to Hurricane Dorian. She drafted a plan to collect backpacks because it could serve multiple purposes. It could be easily carried by both children and adults and be the perfect place for storage. “I believe I was born a humanitarian seeing my mother welcome people 20 NOVEMBER 2019 | OUR CITY PLANTATION | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

into our home, helping them get on their feet, and caring for eleven foster children. So, I just did what came naturally. Watching the news and seeing the aftermath of the storm and the living conditions of the Bahamian men, women, and children really touched my heart and I knew right away, what I had to do,” said Callins-Young. Through the help of her Facebook friends and family members the altruistic Plantation resident collected backpacks, air mats, non-perishable groceries, towels, washcloths, and hygiene supplies to send to those people who lost everything. She contacted Chris Allen, owner of Air Flight Charters, who did not hesitate to help. Allen and his crew have been making deliveries directly to the citizens of Abaco and Treasure Cay two-three times a week free of charge. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

SCHOOL NEWS

Peters Elementary, How Does Your Garden Grow? BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

pril and David Santacroce have been residents in South Florida for over two decades. They have two children who attend local schools and they also own two businesses in the community. Over the last few years, the couple began gardening with their children and noticed how excited they reacted when a tomato or green bean plant would sprout through the dirt and then more so when they were able to eat what they grew. But it was one day in their garden when an idea sprouted on its own. “We found that gardening with our children promoted healthy eating, a feeling of accomplishment, and was a great family event every day. But we also know how difficult and stressful school is with testing, active shooter drills, and bulling just to name a few. So, we decided that the positive effects of gardening at home should be bought directly to the schools,” explained April. The Plantation family made the decision to give children in the community the same feeling of excitement and accomplishment. They wanted to create gardens for local schools and children’s hospitals. After many trials and errors, the family business “Garden Suds” blossomed. The ambitious couple developed candle and soap recipes that they are proud of. Each 100% natural

soy with cotton wick candle is hand-poured and has no paraffin wax or carcinogens that produce harmful vapors. Additionally, they make all-natural essential oil-based soaps and scrubs that do not contain phthalates and parabens. For every candle and soap sold, 5% of the profits will be used to build these gardens. Fortunately, in such a quick period they reached their goal and built their very first garden at Peter’s Elementary for Mrs. Miller’s second-grade class. Garden Suds provided everything needed such as the garden frame, dirt, plants, seeds, and of course, their time. Also, in attendance of the inaugural garden debut was Mayor Lynn Stoner. “This is great for the children they have fun and it teaches them a great level of responsibility,” said Mayor Stoner. “The kids had such a fantastic, handson experience building their own vegetable garden. Dave and April from Garden Suds were amazing and patient with all the kids. We can’t wait to see all their hard work start to grow,” added Mrs. Miller.

“We feel that having a garden at a local school helps a child feel a level of accomplishment, relieve anxiety, helps with concentration, promote positive behavior, improve life learning skills, provide teamwork opportunities, encourage healthy eating, respect for nature, and most of all fun,” exclaimed David. If you have any questions about Garden Suds products or know a school in need of a garden, please contact April@Gardensuds. com or David@Gardensuds.com. ASK THE EXPERT

Arthroscopy of the Foot and Ankle BY DR. JOHN GOODNER

F

oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries that occur during the teenage years may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized, and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion.

Arthroscopic surgery may be used to treat the following conditions: chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages of arthroscopic surgery include: faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; outpatient procedure; and quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. HEALTH AND WELLNESS COLUMN

Adolescent Pain Perception BY RAHIL MALIK M.D. FACOG ona is a bright 16-year-old teenager who is excited about college and future education. However, her menses have been painful where she has difficulty performing in school and on occasion, causes her to miss school. Her parents attribute her pain to normal menstrual pain and encourage her to deal with it. “Social Modeling” is the process by which pain behaviors are learned and research has found parents act as models for their children’s behavior. The interaction and feedback to painful stimuli experienced by an adolescent can be validated or denied based on parental cultural and personal experiences. In certain cultures, menstrual pain is considered a central tenet of symptoms associated with menses and often pain is normalized into an acceptable experience. While most young girls can perform routine activities of daily living and engage productively in a societal social framework, others find it debilitating. However, the skepticism surrounding debilitating pain associated with menses often leads to delay in diagnosis and treatment of a condition called Dysmenorrhea, or painful cramps. Dysmenorrhea is widely prevalent and ranges from 50-90% of adolescent girls and young women. It arises from changes in pain or inflammatory mediators such as PGF2A and Leukotrienes. The impact of dysmenorrhea on young girls can range from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches and muscle cramps. Dysmenorrhea can also often be linked with poor sleep quality, difficulty falling or staying asleep and leads to increased absenteeism in schools. Notably, adolescents are particularly susceptible to delays in accessing medical care and can wait on average 1.9 years to up to 5.4 years before seeking appropriate medical care and treatment. Barriers may include self-limitations and normalization of menstrual pain to lack of awareness of treatment options in treating painful menses. A brief educational intervention can enhance pain management and help improve performance during school. Using NSAID (Ibuprofen, Naproxen, etc.) can help mitigate symptoms when taken 2 days before the onset of menses and continued through the first 2-3 days of bleeding. Taking the medication with food and increasing fluid intake can also help limit gastrointestinal or kidney-related issues. Complementary treatments with warm compresses and exercise may help reduce symptoms while having a low risk of harm. Some studies show dietary supplements such as Ginger, Fenugreek or Fish oil to have limited benefits. For patients that fail these measures to control cyclic menstrual pain, a gynecologic evaluation can help tailor a treatment plan that strategically aims to reduce pain and restore function. “Parental Modeling” should include early recognition and treatment of dysmenorrhea to allow adolescents to fully reach their potential without impairment secondary to pelvic pain.

SCHOOL NEWS

Girls Can Do Anything! Yes, They Can! Yes, They Can! Our City Media 11/19 Sudoku

M

any know that the month of October has two signature happenings: Breast Cancer Awareness, and Halloween. However, what many do not know is that October 11th is the “International Day of the Girl Child”. The United Nations observes the significant day by highlighting girls around the world and by promoting girl empowerment and fulfillment of their human rights. Once again, Mirror Lake Elementary hosted their third annual event by inviting positive female role models from the local community into the school to tell their powerful and uplifting stories. The guest list was plentiful and included quite a bunch of inspiring individuals who had much to share with the eager students. The morning began with the school’s cheerleaders giving a mini-pep rally to get everyone excited for the impressive line-up of guest speakers. The first person to speak was Plantation’s very own Mayor Lynn Stoner; The energetic community figure empowered the girls to follow their dreams, while she also encouraged the boys to support their counterpart’s endeavors. Up next, was Plantation Police Department’s first-ever female Lieutenant Jessica Ryan. The attentive students loved listening to how she overcame the obstacles of every-

one telling her she was too short and too weak to ever become a police officer. She certainly proved them wrong by believing in herself. These inspiring women were followed by many solve the Sudoku puzzle, each row, column and more including five firefighters and paramedicsTo from box the Plantation Fire Department; Regina Bobo-Jackson,must contain the numbers 1 to 9. the first female African American certified in the state of Florida in Civil Engineering; Amy Fisher, a black belt and owner of a local karate school; and Claudia Knowles, owner of Chalk & Iron Gym. Software engineers from Mirror Lake’s community partner, Magic Leap also impressed students with their video game making skills while the Broward County School Board sent their engineers to discuss how they built structures in and around the school. These ladies all told their personal stories that intrigued everyone. “The lesson that our students learned from this event is that you can do whatever you put your mind to and not to ever let anyone tell you differently. All our girls need is one person to inspire them, and that definitely happened today,” exclaimed Mirror Lake Elementary Math Resource Teacher Debra DeBruyne. “We want to thank each and every guest speaker that took time out City 11/19 of their dayOur to visit ourMedia school. You are Crossword all true heroes to our community. You all make this world a better place.”

THE WORLD’S FAVORITE MAGAZINE™ The Kemp Family left South Florida and ventured almost 10,000 miles across the globe to Chiang Mai, Thailand. Despite its small size, the mountainous northern city has it all. From incredible historical sites and an abundance of shopping opportunities to lively nightlife and divine cuisine, the ‘Rose of the North’ made the perfect place to celebrate Leah Kemp’s 13th birthday. Although, the Plantation family had much to see and do, they found time to take a snapshot with Our City Plantation.

THE TRUE DEFINITION OF GIVING

Third graders in Plantation schools received free dictionaries in October as part of the Kiwanis Club’s annual giveaway. Plantation councilmember Nick Sortal, left, Kiwanis president Michael Taussig, and project leader Pete Tingom were among the members who led assemblies at each school, where the students received their books. Also, on display were thank-you cards created by the Central Park Elementary third-grade classes. The Kiwanis Club is always looking for more members. Email Taussig at kcop2012prez@gmail.com.

FOREVER YOUNG Temple Kol Ami EmanuEl’s Early Childhood kids had a blast at school on Splash Pad Day while the older kids (KAFTY youth group) had the opportunity to engage in other water sports at Club Med. Group members got to swim, kayak, sail, paddle board, dance, play basketball and volleyball. But, the highlight was learning how to fly from a trapeze. BEST IN BLUE

Plantation Police Chief Howard Harrison (center) swore in his new two deputies: Darren Brodsky (left) deputy chief of administration; and Jim Dourvetakis (right), deputy chief of operations. Both joined the force in 1994. They replace Bruce Finney and Mark Wendt who retired. Remember to put 954-797-2100 (non-emergency number) in your phone and mark it POLICE.
