A

ugust 30, 2021, marked the official end of the war in Afghanistan. The 20-year combat operation, along with the war in Iraq, left us with the most combat Veterans since the Vietnam war. In fact, there are about 75,000 Veterans living in Broward County, according to the US Census Bureau. The fact that these men and women volunteered to put themselves in harm’s way makes them worthy of our respect regardless of political ideology or whether or not you supported these wars. Veterans Day gives us an opportunity to thank the Veterans among us, or at the very least think of the contributions these men and women have made to our society. Unfortunately, for some of our Veterans, the wounds of war don’t show up until after they return home. The suicide rate among Veterans is almost twice that of non-veteran adults, with the gap growing over the past 15 years. It is clear that the horrors of war never go away for some. If you know a veteran, especially someone who has served in combat, take time to reach out to them on November 11th. Let them know that you care about them and value that they are part of your life. While the ghosts of their past can perhaps never be silenced, your friendship could be the light that keeps them going.

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you gather with family and loved ones to celebrate each other and give thanks for all that we have. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God.”

Palace at Weston is OPEN!

O

pened in March 2021, residents of The Palace at Weston are treated like royalty. The five-star Senior Living Community features spacious, designer-appointed apartments and luxury resort-style amenities along with gourmet dining experiences and entertainment options that rival any cruise ship. The Palace offers three distinct buildings under one roof with Independent, Assisted Living and Memory Care residences.

What exactly is The Palace at Weston?

It is a luxury Senior Living Community offering residents a continuum of care with Independent, Assisted Living, and Memory Care, in three separate buildings; each has its own entrance, amenities, and staffing geared to the care level it offers. We invite interested individuals to visit the building as soon as possible to experience the elegance that is found at The Palace at Weston.

Tell us about the residences at The Palace at Weston. The Palace offers some of the most spacious and well-appointed Senior Living residences in South Florida. There are two fully furnished one- and two-bedroom model apartments to show someone what an actual residence will include. Each features a kitchen with granite countertops and a stainless-steel appliance package, California-style custom closets, and luxurious bathrooms. Most residences include a den for extra space as well as a balcony.

The apartments sound beautiful, but what else does The Palace at Weston offer residents?

Ritz Carlton-style amenities and services are trademarks of The Palace Group and include an elegant dining room, state-ofthe-art fitness center, piano bar, theater, library, and computer center. A monthly fee includes entertainment and social activities, gourmet dining and wine, personal training, security, maintenance, transportation, house-keeping, and utilities, and satellite TV.

Please tell us more about the exciting entertainment options.

Each day is like living aboard a luxurious cruise ship. Many senior communities offer happy hours once a week; our communities offer happy hours every day with live entertainment. But that’s only happy hour. There are activities that take place every day, from morning into night, planned by a full-time activity department. We want people to have a wealth of choices and new experiences, from belly dancing to learning to play the piano to adult education classes with the University of Miami OSHER. People want to enjoy high-end amenities and want to be challenged mentally and physically.

How has The Palace adjusted in this Covid-19 world?

We are pleased to say that The Palace’s Senior Living Communities have weathered the Covid storm very well. To date, mostly all of our residents have been triplevaccinated as well as the vast majority of team members. Under the direction of our Chief Nursing Officer Marilyn Bustamante, The Palace continues to adhere to Covid-19 mitigation protocols, while pro-viding the socially engaging lifestyle that The Palace Communities are known for.

What else distinguishes The Palace? We bring over 40 years of Senior Living experience to what we do. Jacob and Helen Shaham, founders and owners of The Palace Group, are local residents who are passionately involved in the dayto-day operations of every one of their communities. The Palace at Weston is their tenth community.

What industry awards has The Palace Group earned?

and BEST Independent Living Community in the country. The Palace also has been recognized for four consecutive years by Gallup as one of the Most Exceptional Workplaces in the world. Furthermore, we seek the highest standards offered by the senior housing industry such as The Governor’s Gold Seal Award, CARF Accreditation, and Joint Commission Accreditation.

Harvest Drive Serves Thanksgiving Dinner

ocal schools are partnering with Harvest Drive, Inc. to make sure local families don’t go hungry for Thanksgiving. The organization, in partnership with more than 170 Broward County public schools and many area private schools will provide a week’s worth of groceries plus a gift card or perishable items to ensure 2,400 families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. 500 of the families are

also given the opportunity to “shop for free” at Harvest Drive November Boutiques. The recipient families select gently worn clothing and shoes, gently used books and household items for their entire family. With generous donations, Harvest Drive is now able to also provide a selection of new toys. Students at participating schools have been collecting non-perishable items, household goods and grocery gift

cards. Collections began during mid October and will conlcude in early November. The items will be consolidated at 13 school-based distribution sites to ensure that recipient families receive 6-10 bags of groceries in time for Thanksgiving. The mission of the Harvest Drive, Inc. is to promote the concept of philanthropy to Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students by providing the opportunity for them to give back directly to their community in a basic and meaningful way. Students working in conjunction with community partners provide food and other necessities including gently used clothing and household items to Broward County schools’ families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the year. The Harvest Drive strives to educate students on the issue of hunger in our community and empower

them to take leadership roles in lessening hunger’s devastating impact. Members of the local community is encouraged to volunteer or donate canned goods and non-perishable items. Local schools serving as distribution sites include: • Piper High School • Plantation High Schoo • Western High School • Strahan High School

Threats at School are No Joke!

F

ourteen-year old “Connor” was brushing his teeth on a quiet October Sunday night. He had finished his homework and was getting ready for bed. As Conner rinsed his toothbrush, a notification from his iPhone chimed in. He had received yet another Snapchat message. This message, however, was different from most. It read “October 28 will be a horrible day for you.”

By Jon Duka The message was followed by a series of progressively more aggressive messages. Connor shrugged them off as probably from a friend attempting a rather lame joke and went to bed. The situation was no laughing matter, however, when Connor was pulled out of class the next day to be interviewed by Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputies. Other students had received similar messages, were frightened, and alerted

a school guidance counselor. In the end, the two teens who were responsible for sending the messages faced week-long suspensions. It could have been much worse. Speak to Your Kids Broward County Schools, the BSO, and local police departments implore parents to sit down with their children and discuss the potential consequences of sending threatening messages over the internet. Four students in Pembroke Pines alone have been arrested and charged for making school threats. Kids as young as 12 years old have been charged with multiple felonies. In many such cases, the perceived threats were all just a joke-gone-wrong. “Even if you are joking, making threats to school property or others will not be tolerated,” said Officer Randy Vedrine in a video posted to Facebook by the Pembroke Pines Police Department, “they are an arrestable offense which could follow you for the rest of your life.” Helping kids understand the potential consequences of what may seem like an innocuous comment is important to maintaining a safe learning environment for all.

Food for Thought By Beverly Perkins

A

lthough many of us are moving forward with life at this stage of the pandemic, there are still many who have been unable. A staggering number of families are still struggling with finding jobs and maintaining a consistent stream of income.

Luckily, the good-natured and philanthropic individuals at Craig’s Pantry recognized the need and are fulfilling their commitment to being sure that no Jew in Broward County goes hungry. Almost a decade ago, Craig Lamm discovered that many Jews in Broward County didn’t have the means to buy food, so he helped them by working with another local social service agency. However, he felt he could do more, and just like that Craig’s Pantry was born. While they are especially committed to assisting Holocaust survivors, homebound seniors, individuals with special needs and/or disabilities, and victims of domestic violence, one does not need not be religiously observant to receive help. The privately-funded, volunteer-driven “kosher boutique” pantry is the only of its kind in Broward County. Along with

non-perishable food items, the pantry provides fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, fish, dairy, prepared foods, and daily necessities two times a month to those in the Jewish community who are in need. Because of the pandemic, the pantry is now providing meals to over 150 families which is the largest amount since its inception 7 years ago. The dedicated volunteers recently provided meals for the Jewish holidays and will be delivering turkeys with all the trimmings for Thanksgiving. However, they are always appreciative of community assistance. In early fall, the ambitious philanthropist announced a special fundraiser in honor of his 65th birthday. Craig’s birthday wish is to raise $6,500 in which he will generously match so that these families can have not only delicious meals but Hannukah

gifts and household items to make their holidays more special. “In light of the many challenges we’ve all had to face, what better mitzvah than to bring more holiday joy to our beloved Jewish community in need,” stated Lamm. “One of the best blessings at holiday time is the charitable act of giving. Here at Craig’s Pantry, we are blessed to serve throughout the year. I am grateful that I have this purpose in life 365 days a year.”

10 Myths About Lung Cancer By Dennis J. Tishko, M.D., Director of Thoracic Surgery, Broward Health

L

ung cancer is a profoundly common and dangerous disease, but we don’t talk about it nearly enough. Did you know that lung cancer kills four times more women compared to breast cancer and three times more people compared to colon cancer? The good news is that lung cancer screenings can detect cancer early and there are excellent new treatments available. By educating yourself on lung cancer, you could save your life and those you care about. Myth # 1 - “Lung cancer is not very common.” Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. It kills more Americans than breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, melanoma, all sarcomas, all childhood cancers and all domestic violence combined. Myth #2 - “Lung cancer is a hopeless death sentence.” Caught early, lung cancer can be curable in more than 95% of cases. Surgical removal of early stage lung cancers can be extremely effective with excellent results. With a late diagnosis, lung cancer is very difficult to treat and survival is not nearly as good compared to when lung cancer is diagnosed in its earliest stages. Myth #3 - “Only smokers get lung cancer.” About 20% of all lung cancer occurs in people who have never smoked and who have no risk factors. In fact, there

are about as many people dying from lung cancer as there are dying from liver cancer. Lung cancer in non-smokers appears to be increasing. Non-smokers can and do get lung cancer. Myth #4 - “Air spreads cancer.” Cancer does not spread when it meets the air, although this old wives’ tale persists today. This false belief has caused much useless worry, especially in the Black community, where more than 60% of the population believes this false narrative. These wrong ideas can cause delays in diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately lead to lower survival rates. Myth #5 - “More women than men die from lung cancer.” Actually, more men are diagnosed with and die from lung cancer compared to women. In fact, women with lung cancer have better survival rates compared to men. Myth # 6 - “Women are more likely to die from breast cancer than lung cancer.” WRONG! Women are more than twice as likely to die from lung cancer than breast cancer. The idea that breast cancer is a bigger killer than lung cancer has led women to focus on mammogram screenings and ignore lung cancer screenings, even though lung cancer screenings are highly effective. Myth #7 - “There is no way to find lung cancer early.” Lung cancer screenings are extremely effective at finding early cancers. The screening test is a quick,

22 / Our City Plantation / November 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

4-second CAT scan of the lungs. No contrast is used, so there are no needles, no pain and very low X-ray exposure. In addition, these screenings are covered by virtually all insurances. Myth #8 - “Alternative medicine works just as well as real medicine.” This is another very dangerous, and sadly, a common belief. A recent study showed that 40% of Americans believe that some form of “alternative” medicine like vitamins, oxygen, supplements, enemas or crystals can cure any cancer, and 48% of millennials hold this belief. The truth is that lung cancer treatment is very complex. It requires the sophisticated efforts of surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists and a wide team of specialists. Marvelous medical advancements are being made and are proving to be very effective, helping patients to live longer than ever. Alternative therapies have not shown these benefits. Myth #9 - “Smoking marijuana is safe because it is natural.” Smoking is dangerous. Period. Whether it’s tobacco or marijuana, the products of smoking are the products of burning. This combustion produces a vast number of chemicals that can cause cancer. The deeply inhaled and retained smoke from marijuana is no different. Studies have linked marijuana smoking with many serious health problems, including cancer and mental health problems. Smoking anything is bad. Myth #10 -” It’s too late to quit smoking now.” It is never too late to quit smoking. The beneficial effects of quitting start soon after the last puff. Lungs begin to clear, breathing improves and many risks begin to decline. A lifetime of smoking will not reverse immediately, but the benefits of quitting are very much worth the effort.

Carving Out Time for A Dream By Beverly Perkins

little ray of sunshine just made its debut at a Friends of the Library event. “The Motherhood of Art” is a new book released by Plantation resident, wife, and mother of two, Marissa Huber. She co-authored the colorful publication about the delicate balance of motherhood and creative pursuits with Heather Kirtland of Maryland. The talented individual was born and raised in Plantation. She grew up bike riding to the Town Mall, attending Peters Marissa Huber with her mom Joan Basa Huber and Plantation Middle schools, working at The Fashion Mall, and visiting the Helen B. Hoffman Library. Fast forward a decade and Huber went off to college at Indiana University where she received a degree in Interior Design before moving to Philadelphia. But her roots were calling, and she came back to the place she calls home to raise a family and to get her creative juices flowing again. The book evolved because of the constant negative message that women, and particularly new mothers, receive that they cannot do anything for themselves once they have children. This ambitious duo disagreed and wanted to share their thoughts, advice, encouragement, and ideas of how to carve out time for creative endeavors. They did a beautiful job in the form of a conversational book inspired by the many other contributors that defied the “no more time to be an artist”. Nothing inspires this Plantation artist more than connecting with other women who can make some time in their daily or weekly lives to pursue their dreams and interests, big and small. “I’m an artist who gained confidence, focus, and efficiency in my art-making after my son was born, and it went against what everyone was telling me as a new mom,” stated Huber. Huber has been featured in various print and publications including HGTV Magazine as well as many projects across the nations such as the Brooklyn Art Library Permanent Collection. Most recently, she was asked to speak at the recent event at Volunteer Park because Sue Thomas from Friends of the Library has known her since she was 3 years old. In her speech she mentioned how influenced she was by having so many strong role models in her life including Ms. Thomas. Growing up Huber observed how mothers took the time to do activities with the kids, but also took the time to read a book not ignoring passions they still loved. “It’s been a dream come true to go from an idea that lit us up, to something we could hold in our hands and share with you,” said Huber. “Heather Kirtland and I made a great team and we loved hearing from our online community ‘Carve Out Time for Art.’

LET’S CURE STOMACH CANCER THIS MONTH By Beverly Perkins

N

ovember is Gastric Cancer Awareness Month, or as coined by Debbie’s Dream Foundation (DDF), “Curing Stomach Cancer Month.” Each year the dedicated and ambitious nonprofit organization asks that supporters participate in a state declaration campaign by requesting a proclamation from their state representatives to designate November as the official month to create awareness, promote advocacy, raise funds, and ultimately cure stomach cancer. The month of November was chosen because of a great deal of focus on food, nourishment, and family during the upcoming holidays. According to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), an estimated 27,600 new cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed in the United States with a large percentage of people dying from the disease. NCI also notes that men are more commonly diag-

nosed with stomach cancer than women and that stomach cancer is less frequent among non-Hispanic whites than people of other races and ethnicities. Risk factors include smoking, age, diet, and long-term stomach inflammation, such as infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria. For the past seven years, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and Plantation-based Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer have together offered research grants in the field of gastric cancer. DDF’s vision is that stomach cancer will no longer be fatal. If not curable, it will be a manageable disease. Of course, their ultimate goal is to make the cure for stomach cancer a reality. “People know very little about stomach cancer because it was once considered an older person’s disease and very rare. Today, this cancer type is on the rise, particularly

in younger patients. That’s why Debbie’s Dream Foundation is committed to raising awareness and educating patients and families about stomach cancer. We hope you’ll join us by spreading the word about our mission and helping us to raise the necessary funds so that one day no one has to suffer from the horrific disease,” explained Debbie’s Dream Foundation CEO Andrea Eidelman.

Ankle Fractures

Fig: 4

By Dr. Warren Windram D.P.M.

R

ecently roll your ankle or trip/fall with sudden & constant symptoms of pain and swelling to your ankle? Many people mistake an ankle fracture with an ankle sprain (Figure 1 and 2), while they do sometimes occur simultaneously they differ and require an accurate/early diagnosis. The ankle joint consists of three bones (Fig 3) (the tibia, fibula, and talus) and the many ligaments that hold the ankle bones/joint in place. Fractures in the ankle can range from less severe avulsion injuries to more severe shattering-type breaks which includes damaged ligaments. Symptoms include pain at the fracture site, deformity of the ankle joint, significant swelling, blister

Fig: 1&2

formation, bruising, inability to walk, and in severe cases protrusion of the bone through the skin. After an ankle injury, it is key to have your ankle evaluated by a foot and ankle Fig: 3 surgeon for proper diagnosis/treatment with X-rays and other imaging studies if needed. Treatment of ankle fractures can vary depending on the fracture pattern and they all initially require the RICE protocol: Rest (immobilizing the ankle joint), Ice (application of ice pack to the injured area), Compression (Elastic wrap to keep swelling down), and Elevation (the ankle joint placed above the level of the heart). Nonsurgical treatment is reserved for an injury of a relatively stable ankle with broken bones that are not out of place. Foot and ankle surgeons will immobilize the ankle

joint with a short leg cast or removable boot. Surgical treatment is undergone for the more severe ankle fractures with an unstable, malaligned ankle. Surgical intervention consists of plates, screws, and in some cases rods inside the bones to allow the bone fragments to become re-aligned and heal with proper apposition while in a short leg cast/splint (Figure 4). Although most people return to their normal daily activities within 3-4 months, it may take up to one year to return to sports and competitive level activities.

Dr. Windram specializes in foot & ankle reconstructive/trauma surgery, with a particular interest in total ankle joint replacement surgery. He is involved with podiatric surgical training, working as the podiatric surgical residency director at Memorial Health Care System. THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is

FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

Talking About Death

S

By Bruce Iden, Esquire

ooner or later we all die. It will happen to me, and as upsetting as it may be to think about, it will happen to you, too. It’s simply a fact. And while we don’t know when or how death will occur, we hope the end comes peacefully when we are very old, surrounded by those we love, having lived a long and good life. No one lives forever. Death is a part of life, yet most people find the topic very difficult to think about and especially hard to discuss with others. Talking about what will happen to your family when you pass away can be a very emotional subject. And as with all emotionally-charged subjects, it is often easier to ignore. Or think about later. Is estate planning on your “to do” list? Perhaps you are superstitious. Can just talking about something make it more likely to happen? It is common for me to learn that new clients have taken months, often years, from the time they first started thinking about estate planning to when they called our office to schedule a consultation. For many, life provides a burst of motivation encouraging you to take care of matters sooner rather than later. Perhaps a health scare, or a vacation overseas? It may also be seeing the aftermath of a tragedy or the death of a friend or family member. Without proper planning, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind after the death of a loved one, during a very emotional time. Is that the last “gift” you want to leave to those you love? So how do you prepare to face what may happen to your family after you are gone? Is it necessary to have a will, a durable power of attorney, or other estate planning documents? The best place to start is by educating yourself as to what estate planning is. There are many websites devoted to wills, trusts, and other documents that you can explore. Take a look at our website and blog at www. idenlaw.com. By learning about the subject, it may be easier to discuss your needs. It won’t make you an expert, but when you consult an attorney you will be better prepared to formulate questions, which leads to the next step. Consider contacting an estate planning attorney to arrange a consultation. Many estate planning attorneys do not charge for this initial meeting. Keep in mind that you need to feel comfortable and at ease with the attorney and office staff you select. Chemistry is important, as are qualifications . Find someone you trust. Remember not all attorneys specialize in estate planning; some just dabble. Ask questions. Do your research. Look for competence and shared values. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University ▸ Bruce National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University

of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.
