n the span of just six days, eleven people were murdered at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a man murdered two black shoppers at a grocery store outside of Louisville, Kentucky, and a local man mailed more than a dozen pipe bombs to prominent critics of the President. In summary, it was a horrible week for our country that was driven, in part, by division and hatred. Shortly after the horrible events in Pittsburgh however, Tarek El-Messidi, a founder of the Muslim group Celebrate Mercy, set up a fundraising initiative in partnership with another Muslim group called MPower Change on behalf of the Tree of Life victims. Their goal was to raise $25,000 to help the Jewish families impacted by the assault. In a matter of days, they had raised more than $250,000, mostly from Muslim donors. Perhaps as important as the financial aid is the message they sent: we are all in this together. El-Messidi emphasized his motivation to help was driven by a sense of shared humanity, “We are here for you, if you need anything at all. If you need food for the families, if you just need someone to come to the grocery store because you don’t feel safe, we will be there for you.” In this time of extreme division, we can all learn from the example of the actions of these thoughtful, generous people. When we sit down with our families this holiday season, regardless of whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas or nothing at all, we must all remember that we are in this together, not against each other.

he Suzuki Academy’s widely-acclaimed children violinists return for their annual holiday performance at the Winter Wonderland festival. These talented and tiny musicians will perform traditional holiday music along with classical favorites by Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, and Beethoven. The free concert will be held on December 6th from 6:30 pm- 7:30 pm at the Plantation Historical Museum. America’s Suzuki Music Academy’s children musicians have delighted audiences at music, film, and arts festivals, and in concert halls throughout South Florida. Many Plantation families may have seen the children perform at other annual events such as “Plantation Art in the Park” and the Helen B. Hoffman Children’s Library ‘Teddy Bears Picnic”. They often visit the library for the “Story Time” program and for “Violin Kids Play for Kids”, presentations which provide toddlers and preschoolers with an introduction to the world of classical music. The Academy serves as South Florida’s regional center for formal classical violin and piano study. Children can begin formal training at any age and, for those who begin with violin study, many can start as early as 2 years old. Training is provided for students who are beginners through the most

advanced levels of study. The Academy’s director, Mr. Richard Coff, received his formal training and degree in music from Boston’s New England Conservatory where he also began his teaching career. He also held his first teaching position there when he became one of the first teachers in America to work with Shin’ichi Suzuki, the creator of the Suzuki violin method. “The training we are able to provide at the Academy helps children to develop character, poise, fine sensibilities, and the self-assurance that comes with fine musical accomplishment,” exclaimed Coff. “Our goal is to enable children to achieve musical mastery and fine musical accomplishment in a way that enhances their natural development and maximizes the benefits that classical music can bring to the whole child.” Zoe, a 7-year-old Plantation resident, has been playing the violin for nearly a year. She loves playing and practicing songs with her classmates from the Academy. Her mother Kelly states, “I believe that playing an instrument at a young age helps the child to gain confidence, learn

discipline, and see results of their hard work pay off.” Since its inception, the school’s focus has been to provide the most affordable and best formal classical music training for children with a community service component. For over three decades the Academy has been enjoying their reputation as “the regional center for formal classical music training for the children of South Florida”. Hot off the Press – Fire Prevention Month Was a Blazing Success BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Plantation Fire Department encouraged the entire city to celebrate Fire Prevention Month. Besides a multitude of activities and ceremonies such as selecting a “Business of the Year” and a “Member of the Year”, the most anticipated program was the 42nd Annual Marti Terziu Art and Literature Contest which had the largest number of winners in the history of the long-standing event. Over 40 years ago, Marti Terziu developed the contest as a vehicle to bring the fire prevention message home through Plantation’s school-aged children in a creative, yet educational way. Sadly, Ms. Terziu passed away last year and the 41st annual contest was renamed in her honor and will continue to carry her name. The contest

was open to all elementary school-aged children in Plantation in which they were asked to produce their best interpretation of the National Fire Protection Agency’s (NFPA) annual fire prevention theme. This year’s theme was “Look, Listen, Learn. Be Aware. Fire Can Happen Anywhere.” “Engaging the school children in our fire prevention messaging is critical,” explained Joel Gordon, Public Affairs Battalion Chief. “We have found that the children are very effective at bringing the fire safety message home to the parents and seeing that the concepts we put forward are carried out.” This year’s competition featured City-wide winners in four separate categories including recognizing the “Best in Schools”. The categories for submission were hand-drawn art, literature, digital art, and poetry. Each category was further subdivided into K-3rd grade and 4th and 5th grade. Winning entries were displayed in front of the council chambers during the event and are also viewable on the City website at www.plantation.org/psd/fire/fd. Written submissions were judged by the Friends of the Helen B Hoffman Library, hand drawn submissions were judged by the Plantation Art Guild, and the

digital submission were judged by experts in the field of video and computer graphics. A total of twenty-four awards were handed out at the ceremony sponsored by Bristol West Insurance, a subsidiary of Farmers Insurance, along with goodie bags and pink fire helmets in honor of breast cancer awareness month. All participants were invited to pose for pictures on the red carpet after the ceremony. Mirror Lake Elementary had the more than four hundred submissions which won the students an ice cream social with Sparky, The Plantation Fire Department’s mascot.

Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of demen-tia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create

an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. HAPPY HOLIDAYS BY DEBBY TEICH

T

his month, families will celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. They will decorate trees; sing carols; and anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus. They will light Menorahs; play with dreidels; and indulge in festive foods like latkes. They will focus on the seven core values of Kwanzaa; light the Kinara and place a Mkeka on the table. For many, it is a time for gift giving. The holidays can also be a wonderful time for families and friends to put down their electronics to reconnect and spend quality time together, as they celebrate old traditions and create new ones. It is an opportunity to teach children about their heritage and the true meaning of the holidays. Every family’s style of celebration is different, and it is those differences that make the holidays so magical. And remember, traditions don’t always have to be traditional; they come in all shapes, sizes and varieties. Below are some simple ways to celebrate both the traditions and spirit of the holidays. ▸ Make holiday foods together. So much of the holidays revolves around cooking and eating traditional foods. It is a great time to pass down a family recipe. Whether it is baking cookies and pies, frying latkes, or cooking brisket and turkey, get as many family members to help in the kitchen. Assign each one a task. Play some fun holiday music to make it even more festive. ▸ Limit your gift giving. Many families save all year to be able to afford a wide range of gifts for every family member. Decide on a designated amount, so everyone gets the same number. One might even be a trip or event that the whole family can do together. Or, skip the gifts and focus on being together and family traditions, instead of unwrapping gifts. ▸ Read a holiday book together. Pull out a copy of one your favorite holiday books from your childhood and read it with your kids. Or, read a new story together. ▸ Be kind to others. Volunteer as a family and do something special for someone else. Visit

a nursing home; collect food items for a local shelter; work in a soup kitchen or food bank; bring blankets to the homeless; or contact a nonprofit that needs a helping hand. Recount your childhood traditions. Children love to hear about how their parents celebrated when they were young. Talk about your own family traditions and ask the children to suggest new ones. Celebrate the holidays with your family long distance. Today’s technology makes it easy to connect with family that live in other places, so you can celebrate the holidays together and continue to make new memories. Wear the same pajamas. Watch the same movie at the same time. Place a group video call for some virtual caroling or a virtual dreidel game. Make a family recipe together, even if you are not in the same kitchen. Keep a smile on your face. A smile is often contagious. Try to smile as you go about your errands. Treat each sales clerk and cashier with kindness. Set the table with festive decorations. Get the kids involved in setting the table with crafts they made and other holiday decorations.

▸ Give a handmade gift. Instead of shopping in the traditional places, come up with something creative and make your own homemade gift. These are often the most meaningful gifts you can give. ▸ Adopt a needy family. There are so many children that long for gifts on the holidays. Adopt a family and find out what they want. You can even deliver the gifts as a family. ▸ Count down to the holidays. Extend the excitement of the holidays and start celebrating before they begin. Create a list of fun activities

that families can do together in the days prior. ▸ Create family rituals. Create a few rituals to observe each year that family and friends will look forward to as the season approaches. ▸ Watch television together. Gather the family together in one room to enjoy a holiday snack and watch a holiday classic. ▸ Make a Giving Tree. Buy a small artificial tree and hang paper ornaments with the names of charities and gifts the needy might want. Ask each child to select a charity and purchase the gifts. You can even deliver the gifts with the kids. ▸ Create a holiday craft together. Whether it is a Christmas tree ornament, Menorah or Kinara, spend quality time with the kids making simple crafts they can display. ▸ Make a gingerbread house. Explore your creativity (and sweet tooth) by decorating a gingerbread house together. Then display their masterpiece on your holiday table. If that is too difficult or time consuming, decorate gingerbread cookies instead. ▸ Plan a special day together. Plan to spend a day with your family and leave the electronics behind. Go to the beach, zoo, movies or plan a picnic in a park. ▸ Spread holiday cheer with baked goods. Deliver some of your baked goods to friends, family

Wishes Do Come True – American Heritage Club Wins Philanthropy Award BY BEVERLY PERKINS

B

etween athletics, music, drama, the arts, and so many others there is no shortage of clubs to participate in at American Heritage School. However, one club not only is great to be a part of but makes a difference in others’ lives as well. “I have been a part of Make-A-Wish since 9th Grade and, throughout my four years, I have learned that no matter our age, we have the potential to positively influence the lives of children across the United States,” exclaimed American Heritage Senior Jared Cohen. “Through Make-A-Wish, I have seen first-hand how the money we raise changes the lives of families. I enjoy being able to help those in need in our community while having a fun time with my friends.” Recently, the Make-A-Wish Club at American Heritage School won the “Young Philanthropist Innovation Award”. The honor was presented by Make-AWish ® Southern Florida at its donor celebration event at the Miami Tower

Sky Lounge. The prestigious award recognizes young people that possess the dedication, drive, and passion for philanthropy. For the past decade, the school’s Make-A-Wish Club has been under the helm of advisor Sherrie Roisman. She has guided and overseen fundraising activities all in the effort to help underwrite life-changing wishes for criticallyill children. In just the past five years, her students have raised more than $35,000. These much-needed funds have granted seven wishes for Make-A-Wish ® Southern Florida’s families. The club’s goal is to always grant two wishes per year, which equates to $10,000. During the 2017-2018 school year, the school’s fundraising efforts will grant the wish of four-year-old Sebastian Estevez who is the son of a faculty member at Plantation’s premier private school. Sebastian’s wish is to go to Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii which will be underwritten by the school’s club.

“We’re extremely grateful for what Ms. Roisman and her students have done on our behalf,” said Norman Wedderburn, president/CEO of Make-AWish Southern Florida. “Their connection to Sebastian’s wish and witnessing its impact for one of their own will be a special experience for everyone.” “My nephew, Jacob, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma when he was three years old and went through a year of chemotherapy, which basically meant a year in the hospital. Obviously,

these were very stressful times for our family. Make-A-Wish came to the cancer floor at least once a month to organize games with the children and generally cheer up everyone (including parents). It made such a huge difference in the children’s lives. Through this experience I developed a deep respect for the organization. With the chance to sponsor a Make-A-Wish club at American Heritage, I jumped at the chance to do for other children what Make-A-Wish had done for us,” stated Sherrie Roisman, Social Studies Department Co-Chair, Make-A-Wish Club Sponsor, American Heritage School.

Preventing Holiday Home Burglaries BY CHIEF HOWARD HARRISON ccording to the FBI, a home burglary occurs every 13 seconds in the United States. By the time you finish reading this sentence, nine homes will have been burglarized somewhere in the country. Nearly 400,000 burglaries occur during November and December. These are the months when so many of us are either away from home, whether on vacation or getting together with loved ones, or busy accumulating piles of new gifts. Unscrupulous criminals often drive around neighborhoods during and after the holidays, looking for evidence of recently purchased gift items such as televisions, gaming systems, computers, and big box toys. Christmas trees that are prominently displayed are beautiful to enjoy, especially with the abundance of packages including expensive wines, high end household items, clothing, electronics, and more. As much as we like to show off those items, sometimes putting those tempting items in your front window may not be the greatest idea. Nearly half of all successful burglaries are made possible by thieves entering through unlocked doors and windows. Don’t give them a chance. Every external door should have a sturdy dead bolt lock. Never hide keys around the outside of your house. Use metal or quality solid wood exterior doors. If it takes longer than 60 seconds to break into a home, a burglar will usually give up and move on. It pays to have quality locks and good neighbors who will watch out for one another.

A security alarm can be a good investment. Shop several companies to see what they offer and what your particular need may be. Always check references before signing anything. Learn to operate your alarm system correctly. There are types and specifications for every budget. Buy what is right for you, and don’t let someone talk you into something you don’t want or need. Remember, burglars can be forced into committing other criminal acts besides stealing. If they are surprised by someone coming in or if they pick a home that is occupied, they may become dangerous rapists or attackers. If things look or feel questionable like a broken window or an open door, don’t go in! Call the police immediately from a safe place like a neighbor’s house. If you happen to be home during a break in, leave as safely and quickly as possible and then go call the police. If you can’t get out, lock yourself in a room, and call the police. Install bright lights outside. Prune all shrubbery and trees. Make sure your house number is displayed clearly. Don’t make your home inviting to criminals. Have a happy and safe holiday season! Piper High School Senior Named Top Five Finalist in “Shark Tank”- Style Competition BY BEVERLY PERKINS

he late revolutionary South African political leader Nelson Mandela once said, “The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.” This couldn’t be truer as five Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students participated in a “Shark Tank” – style competition which could earn them up to $10,000 in start-up funds for their own businesses. This is the fourth year, the “Startup Summer Launched Night Investment Panel” was implemented in South Florida. The event was open to the public and took place at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center in late August. As part of the “Make Your Job” partnership with Citi Foundation, twenty Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) students spent their summer months working to transform their business plans into operational businesses. As part of the free summer camp, students received innovative, hands-on training, coaching and mentorship from NFTE and other corporate sponsors, aimed at helping them develop their own businesses. ASK THE EXPERT

Heel Pain In Children BY DR. JOHN GOODNER

P

ainful inflammation to the growth plate (calcaneal apophysis) in the back of the heel is known as Sever’s disease. This is most common in young soccer, baseball and basketball players due to the cleat patterns and the specific demand of the sport to the heel region. Why is my child having heel pain? This type of heel pain typically occurs after over activity in children between the ages of eight and 14. Tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscles and hamstrings, are usually to blame for the onset of pain. Many children who experience heel pain have associated flatfeet as well. Growth spurts can aggravate the condition further due to the child’s body trying to adjust to the increased tension from the previously tight muscles on the calcaneal apophysis. Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot on hard surfaces can aggravate children’s growth plates in the heel as well. How do I know my child has Calcaneal apophysitis (Sever’s disease)? Your child will display discomfort in the heel bone at the end of an activity. Typically, stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking are seen. Pain is alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity. Stiffness and pain will usually be present after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time and then tries to get up and walk. Tenderness to the back, sides and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel will be presented by the child. Your child may walk on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground. Discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel. Limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens is another sign.

How can my child’s heel pain get better? There is always a need to modify aggravating activity and avoid going barefooted. Taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone is an option for relief. Proper shoe gear and heel lifts can decrease tension on the heel. Night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament can maintain flexibility gained from calf muscle stretching. Custom molded orthotics are necessary to support the foot and help restore proper alignment if the child has flatfeet contributing to the heel pain. Physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate may be necessary if symptoms persist after home care and activity modification. Occasionally immobilization in a cast or brace to completely rest the heel and allow healing will be necessary. Prognosis is excellent in most cases if the treatment plan is followed. MESSAGE FROM FIRE CHIEF

Holiday Safety Tips from your Neighbors at the Plantation Fire Department BY E. LANEY STEARNS, FORMER PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF

D

ecember brings the holidays with all the festivities, decorations, and warmth of the season. Your friends at the Plantation Fire Department want everyone to have a safe and fulfilling holiday season. So, here are a few simple tips to keep the holiday spirit joyous. Candles are common causes of home fires, particularly during the holidays. Open flames should not be used in the home. Consider electronic candles. They look just as nice and pose no risk. If you do use real candles please remember, “When you go out, blow out.” Everyone loves the beauty of holiday lights. Just like Chevy Chase in Winter Vacation, sometimes we have a tendency to overload electrical circuits. Check all lighting decorations to be sure there are no broken or frayed wires. Only use multi-plug devices with an appropriate circuit breaker and do not run extension cords under carpets or where they can cause a trip hazard. And turn them off when you go to bed. Holiday trees give the home a warm, festive feel. Remember to keep the tree in water. When the needles start to fall, it’s time to remove it from the home. And never put real candles on a holiday tree. Green trees DO burn! Nothing warms a home like a family dinner. Keep in mind, kitchen fires are the leading cause of home fires. Be sure ovens and stoves are turned off. Should a fire begin in a pan, on the stove, DO NOT put water on it. Simply cover it with a lid or sprinkle baking soda on it. You’ll look like a hero and dinner won’t be ruined. Also, keep a fire extinguisher handy. For those few days when the temperature dips all the way down (at least by our standards) if you are considering space heaters, keep them away from drapes, furniture or any other combustible material. Ensure the space heater is U/L rated and has an automatic shutoff should it get knocked over.

Everyone enjoys celebrating New Year’s Eve. Please remember, firing guns into the air is no way to celebrate. Each year people are seriously injured or killed by stray bullets being fired into the air. Your neighbors at the Plantation Fire Department want everyone to be safe. Taking a few simple steps can ensure an enjoyable and memorable holiday season for you and your family. Happy Holidays Stay well and stay safe, E. Laney Stearns For more information and safety tips, visit www.Plantation.org or Facebook.com/City of Plantation Fire Department. 30 DECEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY PLANTATION | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

ake a fist. Did you notice how the muscles in your forearm and upper arm tightened? That’s because your fingers are partly controlled by your arm muscles. This gives you a stronger grip than you would have otherwise. At the same time, small intrinsic muscles within the hand provide dexterity to do things like type, draw a picture or replace your watch battery. Your hands are just one small example of your muscular system’s amazing capabilities and interconnectivity. In fact, your body contains at least 650 muscles, which together account for at least 40 percent of your body weight. Meet Your Muscles The body has three types of muscle tissues: smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and skeletal muscle. Each muscle is made of thousands of elastic muscle fibers that shorten or lengthen to control movement. Skeletal muscles are the only muscles in your body that you can move voluntarily. These muscles are connected to your bones by tendons, which are bundles of tough fibers made of collagen. When you contract a skeletal muscle, the bone and tendons attached to it move too. Though all three types of muscle are vitally important, having well-functioning skeletal muscles is key to staying active, avoiding falls and reducing the risk of disability. To maintain healthy skeletal muscles, exercise is essential. Patients will often ask me what the best kind of exercise is, and I say it is whatever physical activity you enjoy doing—so that you will do it. Protecting Muscle Protects Bones As we get older, we begin to lose both muscle and bone mass. This is a natural part of aging, but one that can be slowed down with exercise. I recommend adding strengthbuilding exercises in your regular routine because bones and muscles both benefit since they’re all connected. If you’re losing bone, you’re also losing muscle, and vice versa. Doing weight-bearing exercises increases muscle mass and forces bones to become denser as your muscles push and tug on them. On the flip side, if you spend too much time sitting around, both muscles and bones become smaller and weaker. Losing muscle mass will limit your daily activity and ability to walk and take care of yourself. One can also develop more health problems as a result. To avoid injuries, don’t throw yourself into any new exercise routine. Consider your fitness level, make sure you know the proper form, and stop if you feel pain. A physical trainer can help you develop a program that will meet your goals safely. I have older patients who try to pick up where they left off when they were 21 years old, but you can’t do that. You have to build up slowly.

Leslie Gaynor recently visited her niece’s new home in Cleveland, Ohio. But, she was sure to take a little piece of her home during her travels. Of course, the visit wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the infamous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The museum recognizes and archives the history of the best-known and most influential artists, producers, and other notable figures who have had an influence on the development of rock and roll. The practice’s mission is to improve the health and quality of life to those they serve with a commitment to excellence by providing the highest quality of dental care.

Endodontics, patients’ smiles are kept bright and healthy. Additionally, Smile Design Dental has a full menu of cosmetic services, performed with the finest attention to detail and superb aesthetic sensibility: Orthodontics, Invisalign, Teeth whitening and Veneers. Additionally, they understand and respect their patients’ time providing state-of-the-art care and comprehensive dentistry all under one roof. This allows patients the convenience of cutting out multiple appointments and office visits. Each location is staffed by caring attentive professionals committed to a 5-star approach to dentistry. Recently, Dr. James Kerns of the Plantation location took time to answer some questions about the practice. What makes this practice more unique than others? What can patients expect when they visit? Smile Design Dental has been carefully planned to deliver excellence in patient experience from the moment one walks through our front door. From warmly greeting patients, to giving a personal tour of our spa-like, modern facility, to gentle care in the dental chair – our goal is making everyone feel comfortable. We provide quality dentistry patients deserve, in a relaxing and chic envi-

ronment beyond one’s expectations for the dentist’s office. Our doctors and staff truly believe in putting the patient first. Delivering quality dental care in a comfortable environment with staff that really cares is what sets apart. Tell us about the doctors. Our doctors are proud to serve the communities of South Florida and do so with utmost integrity and skill. We truly care about our patients and enjoy helping them achieve optimal oral health. Smile Design Dental doctors pursue continuing education to keep up with cutting-edge advancements in the field of dentistry and make them available right here in our Broward County offices. Our friendly hygienists will help patients manage their preventive care, and our front desk staff is happy to help coordinate economical options to pay for treatment. We seek to establish generations long relationships with the families in our areas, and to be a trusted partner in our patients’ oral health. Are appointments easy to obtain? Making appointments has never been easier. Patients can make appointments over the phone with one of our friendly staff members, via SMS text messaging and via our website. Patients also have the option to fill out their new patient forms online in the comfort of their own home. Appointments can also be

confirmed or rescheduled via telephone, text messaging or online. We welcome same day appointments and will make openings in our schedule to accommodate any dental emergency. Each office has hours that vary depending on patient’s needs. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about Smile Design Dental? Smile Design Dental believes that people shouldn’t fear their dental visits. Our priority is always patient care and ensuring that every visit to the dentist is a positive one. IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Get Protection and Peace of Mind at South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind protection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range. The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting system which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques. Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are gun ranges and stores frequently

dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy. How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper targets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a background in programming. We leveraged his expertise to make shooting more exciting through technology. Thus, our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, was born. You shoot

38 DECEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY PLANTATION | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

your actual gun and real ammo at interactive video targets, like zombie games, skill drills, asteroids, etc. The computer provides instant feedback, scoring and analyzing each shot. We also have a standard paper target range for those that prefer a traditional experience. Seems like a great partnership. Was it just you and your brother that started Nexus? Our third partner, Christopher Longsworth, brought the final piece of the puzzle with his background in real estate development and architecture. All the projects in his portfolio are highly regarded as being at the cutting edge of modern architecture, such as Strata at Plantation, and Koi Marina and Residences in Pompano. It was through his vision that the striking architectural design of the building and high-end retail showroom came to fruition. Our guests call our showroom the “Apple Store” or “Guggenheim Museum” of gun stores

because of the spacious, clean and welcoming environment. What else distinguishes Nexus? It’s really the experience we offer. Shooting is the “new bowling”, a family friendly activity. We’re not here to just sell guns. Nexus is the only five-star range in South Florida rated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. We received this prestigious award by providing an unparalleled shooting and shopping experience, as well as superb customer service. We carry one of the largest inventories in the country with thousands of guns in stock. We also have hundreds of rental guns, so you can try before you buy. Our training program is also extremely comprehensive. Our instructors can train anyone including someone who has never touched a gun before to experienced shooters, security personnel, and even law enforcement. We focus on the needs of female shooters too. Half of our staff is female, including our store manager. We have female instructors also. Nexus seems very high end. Is it expensive to shoot there? That’s a common misconception. Even though we are a five-star range and offer the highest level of amenities and quality, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. It’s like driving a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota! n Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. Hours of operation are MondayFriday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm. For more information, please call 954-587-8005; send an email to info@nexusshooting.com or visit www.NexusShooting.com.
