Imagine Life WITHOUT PAIN

Happy Holidays! BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET

T

he holiday season is upon us. Living in such culturally and religiously diverse communities, the winter holidays can have very different meanings to all of our readers. One thing that seems to be constant, regardless of faith or heritage, is our tendency to celebrate with friends and loved ones. Our family tradition is to celebrate on Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) with an extended family dinner, followed by a white elephant gift exchange. If you’ve never played, it’s quite simple and entertaining. Participants bring a wrapped gift. Each player, in turn, gets to unwrap a new gift or “steal” one that someone has already unwrapped. Feel free to adopt our family’s holiday tradition as your own. It is always great fun. Speaking of adopting holiday traditions… Our kids beg us each year to celebrate Festivus, the secular holiday made famous on the sitcom Seinfeld. Coincidentally, it is also celebrated on Christmas Eve Eve. Our 16-year-old son is particularly interested in adopting Festivus’ “airing of the grievances”; so far we have successfully resisted! Our family, along with our extended family at Our City Media, wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season. We hope you enjoy this treasured time with loved ones regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or even Festivus! Best wishes for a festive and safe holiday season.

Blaze of Glory – Plantation Firefighters Capture 11th State Competition Title J BY BEVERLY PERKINS

ust a couple of months ago, the Plantation Fire Department earned first place at the Ft. Myers FSFA State “Firematics Competition” in Ft. Myers. The unrivaled award-winning team claimed the state championship for the 11th time. The City of Plantation firefighters have been competing since the 1970s. This year’s team featured three veteran members and seven rookies. To prepare for the event, The Plantation “Firematics” team practices all year long and compete regularly in several competitions around the State. “This is a great opportunity for us to show our level of commitment to the fire service community, statewide,” said team captain, Mark DeWalt. “It’s hard work, but it’s also a lot of fun.” Competing with eight other teams from across the state, Plantation’s best proved their tenacity in six different events which included a rolling hose relay, changing one hose into two and knocking down

targets, a barrel push, and an old-fashioned bucket brigade. Each event must be completed correctly and the team with the best time wins. Fighting fires requires a combination of skill, knowledge, speed, and accuracy. And, no one knows this better than the Plantation Fire Department Firematics team. The team captured first place in three events, second place in two events, and third place in one event, as well as the overall State Championship. Firefighter Mariela Rico was a firsttime competitor who competed in four separate events for Plantation. “I love the brotherhood,” exclaimed Rico. “Even though it’s a competition, everyone works together to help each other do better.” Rico, who recently completed Firefighter One training, was impressed when she saw another team struggling with a skill and two of Plantation’s team members took the time to show them how to do it better.

“I am proud to represent Plantation. And, being just out of fire school, the competition allowed me to put the new skills I just learned to the test,” she said. “This is a great opportunity for us to show our level of commitment to the fire service community, statewide,” said team captain, Mark DeWalt. “It’s hard work, but it’s also a lot of fun.” De Walt also described the value of bringing on new team members. “By constantly recruiting new team members we keep the energy fresh. The City also benefits not only by knowing their fire department is state champions but also knowing that its members work hard to continually improve their firefighting skills and knowledge.” “We’re very proud of our team,” exclaimed Fire Chief Don Todd. “They practice throughout the year and have really perfected their competition skills. They continue to bring recognition to our department as well as maintain a very long-standing tradition.”

Bear Hugs Needed! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

lthough it’s the most festive time of the year, some are not so fortunate to be celebrating the season surrounded with family and friends. In fact, many individuals are in the hospital not able to celebrate at all. Plantation resident Cristina Pudwell recognized this when she was volunteering at the Broward Health Medical Center (BHMC). The long-time volunteer decided she wanted to do something for these patients. So, she started collecting new stuffed animals to distribute on Christmas morning. It brought such joy to those hospitalized that she carried on the project for five years. The compassionate soul has been volunteering at Westside Regional Medical Center (WRMC) for the last three years and wants to start her “Beary Special” tradition on their campus. “I started delivering bears to hospital patients on Christmas Day after my husband passed away. The holidays can be very difficult when you lose someone, and they can be very lonely if you are hospitalized,” explained Pudwell. “So often, elderly patients are alone in the hospital and I found that delivering the stuffed bears and animals cheered us both up. People tend to think of stuffed animals as just being for kids, but the truth is, the elderly love them too. I have seen grown men tear up when I have given them a bear.” Currently, Pudwell volunteers at the Westside Regional Medical Center gift shop each week and whenever the hospital needs extra assistance. For the last six years, she has logged over 2,000 volunteer hours at BHMC alone and countless hours at WRMC and other area hospitals. “The Christmas Day Bear Deliveries are a special project. If anyone wants

to donate new stuffed animals, that would be great. I will deliver them to all of the patients at Westside Regional Medical Center which could be as many as 250 people,” added Pudwell. “Being a Plantation resident. I like to serve the seniors in the community. At this hospital a great number of patients are seniors and I hope that we can collect enough stuffed animals to make every patient’s day a little brighter.” n If interested, please drop off new stuffed animals to the gift shop. Westside Regional Medical Center is located at 8201 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation, 33324.

Tropical Elementary Welcomes An “A”mazing New Principal BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

lthough born in the Bronx, New York, Robert Schneider has made South Florida his home for quite a few decades. The former principal of Davie Elementary School was welcomed with open arms by Tropical Elementary School faculty, staff, and students at the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year. The beloved educator began his career as an elementary school teacher before opening his own preschool. However, he missed the teaching aspect and decided to return to his passion. So, he jumped right back into teaching and went on to teach all grade levels. During his interaction with his students, he saw a need for children with life challenges. This discovery prompted him to become a Behavior Specialist. His love to reach these students challenged by circumstances through effective interventions was evident upon the abundance of rewarding transformations. Additionally, the dedicated professional was always well-versed in the materials received by teachers and then became a Curriculum Specialist.

His love for learning never ceases and finally, Mr. Schneider added the title Principal to his illustrious resume. So far, his longest-term was with the Davie Mustangs where he resided for seventeen

years. His recent switch with Principal Anderson has both prominent educators excited about their new homes. When asked what his plans are for Tropical Elementary, the astute principal responded, “To learn and preserve the culture and traditions at Tropical for continued success as well as introduce ideas that will make the school even better.” As he settles into Tropical Elementary, he plans to make safety a priority and to keep an open door to parents, staff, and students. It’s been known that Mr. Schneider’s office often has a “Behind the Scenes Tour with the Principal”. His goals are to continue developing and assisting staff and students in achieving their own personal goals. The new Toucan leader is embracing his new adventure at the “A” rated school and so far as made a great transition. He has already shown his appreciation to his staff and by having a celebration luncheon for their perfect grade where he invited former principal Erik Anderson. Schneider stresses to his teachers at trainings and meetings, “It’s not what you taught them that they’ll remember, it’s how you treated them and made them feel while they were in your care that will last a lifetime.”

Taking Stock of Great Opportunities in Our Schools BY BEVERLY PERKINS

his year, Plantation Middle School and Seminole Middle School are participating in Take Stock in Children (TSIC), a mentoring, college readiness and scholarship program for low-income, academically qualified students. The nonprofit organization was established in 1995 to provide a unique opportunity for deserving students in an effort to help them escape the cycle of poverty through education. TSIC connects students with mentors, who support the children throughout the school year, and in some cases follow them all the way through high school. TSIC students, who are selected based on need, then receive free tuition to a Florida college upon graduating. Amanda Frey, executive director of Take Stock in Children for Broward County, announced that Seminole Middle and Plantation Middle join 41 other high school and middle schools in the county. The two Plantation schools are beginning to identify students who fit TSIC’s requirements. “A school that participates in Take Stock in Children is providing an opportunity to access additional resources they otherwise would not have,” explained Frey. “A mentor or volunteer comes in and provides essential life skills and support. It’s someone from the outside coming in and showing that they care.” Studies show that a mentor can “truly change the

trajectory of student performance”. It’s been noted that a mentor’s interest often increases a student’s attendance, which then improves behavior and grade-point averages. “A well-monitored mentoring program is a huge benefit to help a school meet its overall goal, which is student success,” added Frey. “The mentors also get to opportunity to share their life experiences with a younger generation, and by doing so they also get a new perspective on life, as well as a sense of fulfillment.” After reading communications from Nick Sortal, who is always eager to increase volunteers’ efforts at Plantation schools, Frey noticed an entry way into Plantation. The Plantation Council Member had mentioned that he has been successful in recruiting volunteers for elementary schools, but interest in middle school was lacking, so he introduced Frey to school representatives. “Take Stock in Children is the gold standard for serving a student,” exclaimed Sortal. “Now I just

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Local Mom is Helping Others Breathe Easy BY BEVERLY PERKINS

C

arolina Henao was on a quest to find an alternative method to help her son’s respiratory condition. Every parent wants their child(ren) to be happy and healthy. However, some children have medical issues that are difficult to treat which makes everyone unhappy, and this mom was on a mission to find the right help that her son and many others desperately needed. “When my son Max was 6 months old, he had some complications with one of his lungs and he was rushed to the hospital due to a respiratory condition called Bronquiolitis, so he had to take several medications including steroids. I knew about the side effects of steroids whereby I decided to look for natural and non-invasive treatments. In my search, I found salt therapy as an alternative method to clean the lungs from the mucous and increase oxygen. This was a safe therapy for babies, children, and adults as well,” explained the ambitious Plantation mom. Henao discovered that salt therapy is not only safe for children; it is highly recommended natural treatment. There are no harmful side effects. The treatment is suitable for children of any age (as young as one-month-old). Children in fact respond to therapy even more quickly than adults. The effects of inhaling 99.99% Pure Grade Sodium Chloride (Salt) can be beneficial from children suffering from allergies, nasal, or bronchial inflammation, stuffiness, asthma, and other respiratory disorders. Dry salt therapy can reduce inflammation, kill germs and bacteria, and boost a child’s

immune system. “Seeing that the therapy was working on my son with asthma attacks being reduced, the use of nebulizers not necessary, and even his eczema disappearing, I had the idea of creating a place with salt therapy in my community. This became my dream and together with my husband, The Salt Nest was born!” added Henao. Salt therapy grinds and crushes pure salt into micronized particles that are dispersed into a salt room or salt cave via a dry salt aerosol that works to aid respiratory concerns and skin conditions. It then cleanses the respiratory system and speeds up the elimination of toxins in the body. Besides having a great place to relax, unwind, and just breathe, Henao wanted to give back to others suffering. So, last month, The Salt Nest offered free sessions for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The chronic inflammatory lung disease causes obstructed airflow from the lungs making it difficult to breathe. They also worked together with the American Lung Association at the Lung Force Expo to create awareness and help educate caregivers, patients, and health care providers on the benefits of the holistic alternative. During the entire month of May, they are offering unlimited sessions for children that suffer from Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The Salt Nest is located at 10015 Cleary Blvd., Plantation, 33324. For information on the free sessions, please call Carolina Henao at 954-388-7258.

Common Foot and Ankle Injuries in Youth Athletes BY DR. JOHN GOODNER

P

arents should encourage their children to participate in sports, not only for the cardiovascular benefits, but also to help develop attributes like self-discipline, teamwork and an appreciation for the importance of good health habits to carry throughout their lifetime. In children younger than ten, multi-sport participation is advised with a training emphasis on proper technique and coordination. It is commonly recommended that sport specialization be delayed until the late teens; research shows that children who specialize too early are more likely to experience foot and ankle injuries. In addition to proper fitting and supporting footwear, a dynamic warm-up specific to the sport being played is recommended for all ages in order to prevent injury. As the opposite of adults, children are more susceptible to growth plate injuries than injuries to tendons and ligaments. These growth plates typically do not finish closing until ages 15-18 in boys and 13-16 in girls. Many children suffer from torsional imbalances such as in-toe or out-toe, however, the majority of these children outgrow these conditions without medical treatment; see a foot and ankle specialist if your child is consistently tripping during activity.

Ankle Sprains - Typically seen more often in older youth athletes, younger athletes tend to also have associated growth plate injuries with ankle sprains. Immediate treatment is critical to healing and prevention of longterm ankle instability. See a foot and ankle specialist immediately for better long-term prognosis. Physical therapy to restore balance and strength is often necessary after offloading the injured ankle. Fractures - If a child is unable to put weight on the injured foot after injury, it is recommended to see a foot and ankle specialist for an X-ray to rule out a fracture. If not severe, rest and immobilization with a cast may likely be the treatment. More complicated injuries may require surgical correction for better long-term prognosis. Stress fractures are often seen in children whose total participation in sports activity is greater than 16 hours per week; it is recommended that a child’s total hours of organized sports per week should be less than or equal to the age in years. Heel Pain - Also referred to as calcaneal apophysitis, it is an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel usually caused by excessive usage, tight Achilles tendon, flat feet, poor fitting cleats or shoes, or blunt trauma. It is commonly seen in sprinting sports, like soccer and baseball, because of the cleat patterns and also in basketball because of the force from coming down after a rebound. Usual treatment includes rest, immobilization, ice, heel lifts, orthotics, stretching and physical therapy. Shin Splints – This is a very common overuse injury.

The presence of a tight Achilles tendon can cause overuse and inflammation of the weaker dorsiflexion muscles in the front of the leg. In children with flatfeet and a tight Achilles, overuse of a muscle in the back inside of the leg can become inflamed as well. Treatment includes rest, ice, compression, physical therapy, stretching, strengthening exercises, and orthotics. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Holiday Greetings and Happenings BY MAYOR LYNN STONER s we approach wrapping up 2019, I’d like to wish everyone a happy and joyous New Year! My first year as your Mayor has been so wonderful and I am beyond excited for the years to come. The City of Plantation is its own “Wonderland”, having a little bit of everything for our residents and visitors. Take a look, and you’ll see how proud we are of our community and the amount of pride in our residents and businesses, as we always strive to work as one. On September 11th we proclaimed the day as “Census 2020 Complete Count Committee Kick-Off Day”. Every ten years the U.S Census Bureau counts residents across the country and this year, Plantation has started the process. Over the next couple of months, the Census workers will make their way around Plantation. Having a correct count is critical, as the Census numbers are used to determine federal representation and funding of programs. I hearten our residents to participate and help achieve a complete and accurate count. This wouldn’t be Plantation without some fun activities for all to enjoy. Just last month, we had our annual “It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation” holiday parade. The parade began at Broward Boulevard and 441 and made its way to Plantation City Hall showing off incredible floats and scenery. We have our “Rock the Park” concert series returning this year which will run the first Friday of each month until April 2020 at Central Park. This month The Long Run, The Eagles tribute band goes on stage December 6th. Our first “Light Up City Hall” event will follow and take place on Saturday, December 7th. All our residents and visitors may enjoy music, food trucks, pictures with Santa and more! Invite your friends, family, coworkers and all, because here in Plantation our invitations are always extended. In addition to fun activities, with the holidays around the corner, our Parks and Recreation Department holds “Kid’s Day Off” events on days when Broward County Public Schools are closed. Enjoy those days off at one of our many parks. We’ve been working hard putting up shade canopies over our playgrounds to keep our children (and adults) shaded and cooled down. If you prefer indoor activities, the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library has great group activities scheduled throughout the year. They have something for all ages and interests, so I’m sure you’ll find something worth reveling in. Along with improvements to our playgrounds, we are bringing a magnitude of projects to our City in the upcoming months. We’re bringing you an athletic sports center, a bowling entertainment venue, restaurants, retail stores, and so much more. As these projects reach completion, all are welcome to join in on the experiences and adventures. I do hope everyone who walks through the City of Plantation is as fascinated by their views as I am and truly appreciate all Plantation has to offer.

ASK THE EXPERT

What is a Colposcopy? BY CAMIL MARRERO MD, MPH, FACOG nnual gynecologic exams include a pap smear, a test in which cells from the cervix are sampled and examined to determine the potential for abnormal cells. If your doctor calls you after the exam and informs you that the routine test is abnormal, they may recommend that a colposcopy be performed. A colposcopy is a more detailed gynecological exam that is done to examine the cervix, vagina, and the vulva more closely. After an abnormal pap, the colposcopy is done to evaluate for precancerous cells or for the presence of cancer in the areas of the cervix, vagina, or vulva. During the colposcopy procedure, the patient lies flat on their back with their legs supported by the gynecological exam table just as is routinely done in the annual examination. The physician then introduces a special instrument called a colposcope to magnify and light the area. Next, several solutions are placed to clean the region and help highlight the areas with suspicious cells containing possible anomalies. These solutions may cause a mild burning or tingling sensation. If your physician detects any variations from normal tissue; small samples (biopsies) are obtained of the area. Biopsies can also be taken from the vagina or vulva at which time the physician will administer a local anesthetic. These biopsies are then sent to a laboratory so that a specialized physician (pathologist) can examine the tissues and then provide the gynecologist a more accurate diagnosis. A colposcopy usually lasts approximately 10-20 minutes and is performed in an outpatient office setting that does not require general anesthesia. The patient should not be on her menstrual cycle and no dietary restrictions are required prior to the intervention. However, it is important that 24 hours before the test, the patient abstain from any sexual activity, and avoid applying any vaginal cream, or vaginal douche. Patients can experience light vaginal bleeding or spotting for a couple of days after it is performed. Rare risks include pelvic pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, or infection. The usual discomfort after the procedure usually resolves within 2-3 days and patients can take over the counter pain medications to alleviate the discomfort. After the procedure, the patient should use a sanitary pad and avoid tampons, douching, or vaginal intercourse for one week. A colposcopy is a safe procedure and results will determine if a patient needs any further testing or treatment. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please consult your physician.

“JEDI”

This is Jedi. He is a 9 yearold dachshund, or as most people know them as, a wiener dog. He loves to go outside and lizard hunt in the backyard. His favorite person is his mom. Every night he sits by her side on the couch while the family watches tv. However, Jedi is not a big fan of strangers. He is a very protective dog and will bark at anyone he sees. Jedi’s favorite thing to do is lick the floors of the house. He spends hours just walking around the house licking the floors, even though we tell him not to because it makes the floors all sticky.

“ROSS” My name is Ross and I’m a Shih-poo. I’m a 6 year old boy rescued three years ago from a place where I was abused. I now live in Plantation with my new family and I also have a sister dog, Grace that’s a Havanese. My favorite person is anyone in my family that will cuddle with me.I feel very happy and blessed. I don’t like toys but I do love long walks and treats. I was last seen barking at some big dogs in my neighborhood!!

“TUCKERBEAR” This is Tuckerbear, he is a Cocker Spaniel and 8yrs old. He is the apple of his mommy’s eye but can be shy with people. He loves to play ball, catches it on 1st bounce and brings it back for another throw. He goes to bed at 8:00 pm and rises at 10:00 am requiring rubbies and kisses before getting out of our bed. He is denied nothing and loves his treats. While born in North Carolina, he resides in Plantation and has since 2017.

“BAILEY” This is our golden retriever, Bailey. We live in Jacaranda Lakes and Bailey is 10 years old. Bailey loves her fruits, especially raspberries and veggies but mostly loves to take long walks in the neighborhood. Meeting friends along the way and sniffing every tree as she looks for squirrels to get excited about. Bailey loves to show off her tricks and loves her mom and my 1 year old granddaughter.

THE WORLD’S FAVORITE MAGAZINE™ Laura Kinsman recently returned from a trip to New Mexico. While visiting the Land of Enchantment, she went to Valles Caldera. The 13-mile wide inactive volcanic crater was created about 1.25 million years ago by a spectacular volcanic eruption. Known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, winding streams, and hot springs, the long-time Plantation Historical Museum volunteer made a little history of her own by taking a snapshot with Our City Plantation.
