Hurricane Season is Here Again

2

017 was, by far, the costliest hurricane season in United States history. More than $282 billion of damages were caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Many of us in South Florida are still feeling the impacts of Hurricane Irma. The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, especially in Puerto Rico, will have long consequences. Fortunately, 2018 is expected to be less active than 2017. Colorado State University hurricane researchers predict the 2018 hurricane season to be slightly more active than normal, with a predicted 14 named storms in the Atlantic basin. This is a far cry from last year’s two and half times more active environment.

It Only Takes One Storm According to the Tropical Cyclone Landfall Probabilities tool developed by researchers from Bridgewater State University and Colorado State, Broward County has about a 35% chance of having a hurricane make landfall this year and about a one in five chance of a major hurricane making landfall. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ▸▸ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ▸▸ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information and water. ▸▸ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in the case you lose power and water supply. ▸▸ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer. Sincerely,

Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

It’s Always Fun to Horse Around in Plantation BY BEVERLY PERKINS

F

or over 13 years, the City of Plantation has provided its equestrian community a place to enjoy their lifestyle and love for horses. The equestrian-friendly town is proud of their Equestrian Center which is tucked within Volunteer Park. The Plantation Equestrian Center features a picturesque, sub-tropical setting with two stables that house 96 stalls, 3 show rings, 2 practice rings, multiple paddock areas, seating for approximately 300 spectators, concession stand, restrooms, and on-site management. Additionally, the 85-acre park includes beautiful landscaped boardwalks, bridle paths, nature trails, wetlands, playgrounds, auditory sculptures, and plenty of recreational areas. Since its inception, thousands of visitors have appreciated the weekend horse shows and exhibitions. This month, the Center will host two separate shows. The Heritage Horse Show on June 9th-10th and The Heritage Jump the Moon Horse Show on June 23rd. For those wanting to discover and learn more about horses, Plantation Pony Camp provides an exciting introduction to the world of ponies and horses. The 5-day a week summer program starting June 11th offers an experience for young riders to learn breeds of horses, the basics of western riding, how to care for horses, and how to be safe around them.

“I have been a horse lover since I could walk and talk. I drove my parents crazy wanting a horse my whole childhood. I was 15 when I got my first horse and 48 years later still love them,” expressed Camp Director Kathy Carter. “Being around the horses teaches kids responsibility, kindness, and compassion. I was thrilled when the City of Plantation asked me to run their summer pony camp program.” The children spend the first part of their day preparing the horses to ride, this includes brushing and tacking them up before riding around the horse trails. After riding for a few hours, everyone takes a lunch break and has some time for water play before riding again. Space is limited as the groups are kept small to maintain a safe, secure, and friendly environment. “I love my job, working with the kids and the horses. It is an incredible feeling at the end of the day when a child comes up and hugs me and tells me they had so much fun, and this was the best day ever. How many people get that satisfaction from their job like that?” added Carter. The Plantation Equestrian Center is located at 1451 NW 118th Avenue, Plantation, 33322. ore than 145 honorees, club members, families, and friends came together at Jacaranda Country Club in early April to celebrate the outstanding work, dedication, commitment, and leadership of the many women associated with the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club. GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club President, Dr. Helen Ackerman welcomed everyone to the 44th Annual Woman of the Year Luncheon: Plantation Pathfinders. She then went on to honor each outstanding member from the nine service clubs in Plantation. Each volunteer demonstrated their dedication to the community through a variety of projects. These ambitious undertakings include the arts, education, fundraising, beautification, preservation of local heritage, and of course support of the Club’s goals and activities. All honorees were selected by their own clubs for the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club recognition. GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club Master of Ceremonies, Gloria Merritt, read the accomplishments of each winner. Mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic

Both exhibits will run until October 6th, 2018. “The WWI exhibit highlights, not only the who, what, when, where but other events that occurred during this period such as medical advancements, segregation in the military and woman’s suffrage,” said John Feeney, Curator of Plantation Historical Museum. “The City display expands on the permanent exhibit, celebrating the schools, the people, the places and the volunteers, all who make Plantation a great city.” The City of Plantation Celebrates 65 Years exhibit consists of items, pictures and stories to take long-time residents on a nostalgic journey while it introduces new residents and young ones to Plantation’s history. “One of the more popular displays is the one highlighting the schools of Plantation. There are old football and drill team uniforms and mascots on display along with other mementos from the elementary and middle schools,” added Lauren Bhaggan, Museum Assistant. “A wonderful 1960s promotional video is

shown on a loop. It has great footage showing how the area has grown and changed.” The WWI exhibit highlights contributions by women such as nurses on the War Front, fighting for voting rights and working in the factories. Additionally, African-Americans’ role in the war, both on the home front and overseas, is discussed. Subjects also displayed are communications, vehicles, animals, and so much more. In the summer, to supplement both exhibits, the Museum will be hosting a Plantation Trivia afternoon for the avid Planation historians and a fun family Plantation Bingo. The Museum is happy to host the Air National Guard Band of the South: Jazz Quartet and a local dance troupe who will give a performance in the distant style of Mata Hari, a popular dancer and spy during WWI. That day’s event will also include a WWI craft for kids. The museum is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday,

and Saturday from 10am-noon and 1pm-4:30pm. All events and admission are free and open to the public. However, donations are always graciously accepted and much appreciated. The Plantation Historical Museum is located at 511 North Fig Tree Lane, Plantation, 33317. For more information about events, such as dates and times, please call 954-797-2722 or visit plantation.org/museum.

matchbox Sawgrass Mills Celebrates the Community and Their One-Year Anniversary BY BEVERLY PERKINS

t is so exciting to have a neighborhood establishment care so much about the South Florida community. Besides celebrating their one-year anniversary, matchbox vintage pizza bistro Sawgrass Mills wanted to celebrate the area locales just the same. “We like to have fun and bring the whole community together, and celebrating for just one day wasn’t enough,” said Eric Brannon, area director of operations. “Our weeklong celebration centered around some new and exciting original creations that our culinary team came up with using our fresh ingredients and homemade specialties.” Known for their extensive menu with unique offerings from certified angus beef ® mini burgers on freshly made brioche topped with onion straws and the spicy tuna tartare tacos served in a crispy wonton to their vast array of pizza specialties, the popular Sawgrass Mills bistro created a special anniversary sampling for their guests while also recognizing National Autism Awareness Month. Foodies were able to enjoy gastro sensations such as a Garlic Gulf Shrimp Pizza made with garlic white sauce, tomato, Parmesan cheese, and basil. A celebration isn’t complete without a signature drink, and a

Roseberry Punch cocktail with blackberry gastrique, rosemary syrup, vodka, lemon, and bubbles completed the pairing.

In honor of National Autism Awareness Month, one dollar from every pizza sold went to Autism Speaks, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting solutions for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support. Just last month, the Washington, D.C. headquartered restaurant group created “Parkland Giveback Day”. Guests were invited to eat pizza and make a difference. All Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

students and staff received 50% off their bill, and a portion of all proceeds from the day’s sales were donated to the Broward Education Foundation (BEF). Even after a successful event, the restaurant donated an additional $2,000 to the BEF. “Over this past year, we have enjoyed immersing ourselves in the community and proving that we offer much more than a casual dining experience,” said Brannon. “From our artisan ingredients and handpulled mozzarella to our craft cocktails, we are setting a higher standard of casual dining for all to enjoy.” During the month of June, the summer local promotion will offer patrons who show their Florida driver’s license 15% off their total bill. Located in the east end of the Colonnade Outlets section of Sawgrass Mills, matchbox provides a sophisticated urban, cozy and welcoming ambiance. The two-story location boasts a 58-seat indoor/outdoor bar, private event accommodations, and an eight-seat chef’s table with a close-up view of the kitchen. matchbox Sawgrass Mills is located at 1860 Sawgrass Mills Circle, Sunrise, 33323. MESSAGE FROM FIRE CHIEF

Are You Storm Ready? BY E. LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF

I

t’s that time of year again, June 1st through November 30th is Hurricane season. Hurricanes are destructive and can be deadly. We have no way to control them. However, we can, with some accuracy, predict what is going to happen so we can prepare ourselves accordingly.

Is your home storm ready? Will your home withstand storm force winds? If you’re not sure consult a structural engineer. Windows and doors are the weakest part of the home. Properly fitted storm shutters are essential to protect your home’s openings. If you are not familiar with how to put up storm shutters or don’t think you are capable secure assistance now. Don’t wait until a storm is approaching. People are seriously injured or killed every year putting up and taking down storm shutters.

Assemble an Emergency Kit: An emergency kit includes items you will need for at least 72 hours following a storm. A complete list of necessary items is on our website.

A Word About Generators: If using a generator, make sure you know how to operate it safely. This includes using properly rated extension cords and keeping it away from windows or doors to prevent carbon monoxide from entering your home. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be lethal. If you have a generator a CO detector is a must.

Should You Evacuate? If your home is not secure, you live in a low-lying area, or a manufactured home consider evacuation during a storm. If you are evacuating you need a plan. Where will you go? What will you take? Someone outside the area should know your plan. If you have nowhere to go, shelters open prior to a storm. Shelters are neither comfortable nor convenient. They are areas of last refuge and you must bring all your own supplies including bedding, medications and convenience items. If you have special needs or pets, you need to pre-register with the special needs or pet shelters now.

Stay Connected: The City of Plantation provides a number of communication outlets designed to keep you informed of all emergency information related to Plantation residents. A list of information channels is available on our website. Summertime is fun time in Florida. We should enjoy it without worrying about storms. A little pre-season preparation and planning will make all the difference. Don’t wait for a Watch or Warning to be posted to begin your preparations. For more details and safety tips on how to prepare, visit our website at www.Plantation.org or visit the FEMA preparedness website at www.Ready.gov. and follow us on Facebook.com/City of Plantation Fire Department. 24 JUNE 2018 | OURCITYPLANTATION.COM

CAN DO KID

No Bones About It, This Student’s Auction is for a Great K9 Cause BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

here’s always a first time for everything, and an ambitious fourth grade student at American Heritage School created the “First Annual K-9 Cause Art Auction”. Jackson Laurie and his supportive parents, Douglas Laurie and Mikki Laurie-Van Allen partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at Plantation’s premier private school.

The Laurie Family

American Heritage Student Artist Sarah McDonald completeing art live at the event

Inspired by the young boy’s passion for animals and art, the group decided to raise funds for retired K-9s by selling artistic renditions of these remarkable canines. These courageous dogs are fully accredited officers bearing the honor of their office during ser-

vice and in death. Earlier this year, Jackson Laurie along with other art students and faculty went to the Broward Sheriff’s K-9 training field to photograph these K-9 and their handlers in action. They used this photography as inspiration to create professional art pieces embodying the essence of these amazing animals. When a K-9 retires, they are no longer financially supported by the department they have served. Their law enforcement handlers often graciously adopt them and continue to care for them since they have developed a bond that cannot be broken. However, medical and healthcare for these K-9s can be quite costly. The Broward Sheriff’s Foundation recognized the problem and established the Retired K-9 Officer Healthcare Fund (RK9OHF). The money in the fund pays up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9 from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County. It was the belief of Dr. Herrington, his team at VCA Hollywood and the Sheriff Foundation of Broward County that this fund could

offset those healthcare costs. “As an active member of our veterinary community for over 25 years, I have cared for K-9 Officers throughout South Florida in every stage of their career. Supporting the Retired K-9 Officer Healthcare Fund is our way to continue to give back to these dedicated Officers for years to come,” said Jim Herrington, DVM, Medical Director VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital. Just a couple of months ago, American Heritage School hosted a Silent Auction for these special works of art in the Black Box Theatre on campus. Students and teachers created 31 different works of art that sold for over $10,000. The success of the school’s inaugural fundraising event raised over $33,000 in total in which 100% of all funds will go a long way to support these efforts and give back to even more retired K9 Officers that have spent a career giving to our community.

A Round of Applaws for the Pawsitive Pen Pal Program! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

E

ight years ago, Barbara Clair Kettler, a retired teacher and member of Share-A-Pet created the “Pawsitive Reading Program”. She brought her beloved pet therapy dog Chessie to Tropical Elementary to help students communicate better while learning to read and write. Children were discovering what they had in common with others and fostered new friendships in the process. It became so successful that the program expanded, and Peters Elementary became involved. Chessie is famous for writing letters to the students using her very best “paw”menship of course, and she patiently awaits Erik Anderson, Dr K, Joan Zucker, Terie Miranda with Chessie, Sookie, Resource Officer for both schools for the responses. She also likes visiting and listening to the young children read to her. Since last year, three additional classes have been participating in the program. Peters and Tropical Elementary students began exchanging letters at the beginning of the school year. Pet therapy dog teams regularly pick up and deliver the cards and letters, and the excited students read their mail to their classes. The eager classes anticipated meeting their pen pals at an end of the year celebration hosted at Peters Elementary. Upon arrival students were greeted by each of the dog teams: Barbara Clair

Kettler & Chessie, Marsha Rous & Clementine, Georgia Brown & Spanx, Barbara Prezioso with Ava Peach, and a student holding a sign. All the other students waited patiently in the cafeteria. Peters Elementary Principal Dr. Joyce Krzemienski welcomed everyone and Barbara Clair Kettler shared more information about the program. The gracious little hosts took their visitors on a tour of their school and then went back to their classrooms to exchange cards and to create a personalized photo frame before enjoying a pizza party. Photos of each Pen Pal duo along with their therapy dog were taken as a great memento to place in their frames and take home. The students were sad to leave each other but, will continue exchanging letters as well as phone numbers to schedule play dates. “We hope this is the start of new friendships for them and I quote one of my second graders who wrote ‘a friendship made with pencil and paper’,” expressed Barbara Clair Kettler. Peters Elementary is currently seeking more pet therapy dog teams for the 2017-2018 school year. For more information, please visit ShareAPet.org or contact Barbara at ChessieK9@aol.com.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County Teens Meet the Big Cats BY BEVERLY PERKINS

ifteen Piper High School Bengals had the opportunity to explore the home of the other popular big cats in the neighborhood. In addition to being students, these teenagers are Little Sister Stephanie with Big Sister Lindsay part of Big Brothers Bohlen of Hollywood Big Sisters of Broward County, and they recently participated in the new Florida Panther Hockey Club Mentoring Program. The launch of the Panthers’ School-to-Work program came about because of Panthers Director of Corporate Partnerships, Anthony Hill. For the past two years, Hill has been a Big Brother to 12-year-old Hezekiah. Being a mentor inspired Hill to connect the two organizations. By joining forces, the two local groups are able to benefit everyone involved, especially the youth. The program is designed to encourage the 10th and 11th graders to chase their dreams and understand their potential. During the monthly four-hour mentorship, the excited students learned all about the Florida Panthers and what it takes to run a large-scale arena

From ticketing to ice maintenance, and a behind-the-scenes peek at what is involved to produce concerts and other large-scale events at the BB&T Center, the teens were exposed to major league franchise business. Additionally, they were invited to attend a hockey game each month. “We’re simply delighted to partner with the Florida Panthers in support of the kids we serve,” said Ana Cedeno, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County. “The Panthers have created a remarkable dynamic that makes the program super fun for the kids. Start spreading the news… Scott Collins did just that as he brought along Our City Plantation to Times Square in New York City. The iconic intersection and destination in Midtown Manhattan brightly adorned with billboards and advertisements is one of the world’s busiest pedestrian locations. Between shopping, sightseeing, Broadway shows, and dining, it’s no wonder the city (or their visitors) never sleep. Bringing a little piece of home is a great way to wind down while still being in a New York state of mind.

The 411 on Veneers DR. SARA DANESHPAJOUH, DMD

S

ummer time is here, and everyone wants that infectious “Hollywood” smile in all their everlasting vacation pictures. I haven’t met a person or a patient who does not desire to have a bright and beautiful smile when they greet those whom they see regularly, and even new faces they may encounter. A smile is one of the first recognizable things people notice. A matter of fact is that a study has shown that Americans who have straighter, and whiter teeth are 45% more likely to inquire a job from an employer when going head to head with another candidate who will likely have the same credentials and skillset. A warm and welcoming smile can do something as simple as making someone comfortable when approaching and having an intellectual and mindful conversation with you. Pearly whites are known to carry out an everlasting impression. There are many ways to attain that attractive smile, but the best and most effective way is with veneers. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), a veneer is a thin piece of porcelain used to recreate and mimic the natural look of teeth, all while providing the same durability and strength of a natural tooth. The treatment is simple and is guaranteed to be highly effective with a predictable long-term prognosis. It’s a straight forward, quick, and easy procedure that 3:53 PM can simply be done within two visits to your dentist. Veneers are the best option for people with teeth that are stained, chipped, or even have gaps. If you’re anything like me, the idea of having the perfect teeth at some point seemed like a dead end and merely impossible, but in fact it is not. Veneers are essentially used to correct anything from restoring the proper function of teeth, correcting size, and shape of teeth to correcting color and any potential factures or imperfections. There are a variety of ways to correct teeth, and often times patients will opt out from the hassle and inconvenience of having to wear braces and choose to have a quick and easy set of alluring veneers. Any doctor will tell you that this is a painless procedure that will have you smiling even on your bad days. I highly recommend veneers to any patient who desires a beautiful smile since it is the most conservative approach to correcting size, shape, and color of teeth. If you’re someone who wants fast, but effective and well-constructed results for a picture-perfect smile, veneers are most definitely the best and most promising option. Dr. Sara Daneshpajouh, DMD specializes in general & cosmetic dentistry, and has been an active dentist within the South Florida community for over 9 years.    Smile Everyday Dentistry is located at 7500 NW 5th St. Plantation FL, 33317. Prenatal Nutrition

“SIMBA & DUKE”

BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

O

ver the last few decades the fields of obstetrics and nutrition have changed. This change has greatly affected prenatal nutrition recommendations. Nutrition in pregnancy couldn’t be more important, as it’s crucial for a number of reasons. The first is that good nutrition helps maintain maternal energy requirements. Secondly, it provides nourishment for development of new fetal tissues. Lastly, energy reserves build for postpartum lactation. The primary focus of prenatal nutrition is on weight gain and dietary intake in pregnancy.

Diet: A baby’s birth weight is affected by maternal weight gain during pregnancy. Although, it is normal to gain weight throughout pregnancy, it is critical during the second trimester. Due to the metabolic demands of pregnancy, supplemental dietary intake is required to support the recommended weight gain. A normal pregnancy diet should be comprised of 30% fat, 50% carbohydrates, and 20% protein. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) in pregnancy is 60g, and most American diets contain more than enough protein. However, many proteins from animal sources are very high in fat and may contribute to excessive weight gain if not monitored. A diet should be tailored to each individual based on height, weight, activity level and trimester of pregnancy. The new recommendations calculate the trimester specific needs.

Prenatal Vitamin Supplements: Prenatal vitamins are not necessary for every patient. However, they are routinely prescribed to most patients due to the fact that a nutritionally compromised pregnancy may not be identified, and the benefits are tremendous. A standard prenatal vitamin formulation contains: ▸▸ Iron - 30 mg ▸▸ Zinc - 15 mg ▸▸ Calcium - 250 mg ▸▸ Vitamin B-6 - 2 mg ▸▸ Folate - 0.4 mg ▸▸ Vitamin C - 50 mg ▸▸ Vitamin D - 5 mcg Each formulation varies but should be chosen on each individual’s specific needs. Typically, a normal well-balanced pregnancy diet will provide the RDA of all nutrients except elemental iron and folate, both which need to be supplemented.

Mineral Trace Elements:

Iron - An appropriate intake of iron is necessary since pregnancy can deplete iron stores. Premature birth and low birth weight have been linked to low iron levels in early pregnancy. The average requirement is 22mg/day, but some women need 27mg/day. Some women benefit from taking iron supplements if they are iron deficient, but it’s best to ask your doctor. Folate - The B vitamin is needed for the healthy growth and development of the unborn baby. During pregnancy, the requirements are increased. Adequate intake helps to also prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. Iodine – This mineral is essential to the production of thyroid hormones, which regulates body temperature, metabolic rate, reproduction, growth, blood cell production, and nerve and muscle function. Other important elements are Zinc, Calcium, Phosphorous, and Sodium. Speaking to your doctor about your specific needs are most important for a happy, healthy, and easy pregnancy.
