IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
4 Generations Treating All Generations – Advanced Dentistry of Plantation BY BEVERLY PERKINS
S
ince 1977 Dr. Marc Schwartz has kept his patients smiling at his Plantation practice. Throughout the years, he has combined the science of dentistry with his artistic flair for creating beautiful smiles. He’s also pleased that his son Dr. Eli Schwartz followed in the family tradition as a fourthgeneration dentist and joined him in his state-of-theart facility. Advanced Dentistry of Plantation recognizes that all their patients are unique and deserve to receive dental care that reflects their individual needs. The experienced and talented dental team is committed to working with their patients and creating a comfortable, stress-free, and rewarding dental experience every time a patient visits their practice. Maintaining dental health and improving smiles always makes the experienced dentist smile himself. Besides being satisfied with his work, Dr. Schwartz is most proud of the long-term relationships he has built with his patients, and in some cases, he is treating third-generation family members. Dr. Marc Schwartz recently took the time to answer some commonly asked questions about his practice. What sets Advanced Dentistry of Plantation apart from all the other dental practices in southeastern Florida? First, my son and I are continuing a 100year family tradition of providing outstanding dentistry services. Our office is conducive to providing the best dental care possible to our valued patients. We wanted to create a place where we would feel comfortable sending our own spouses or children – since we consider our patients and our loved one’s part of our extended family. State-ofthe-art technology, an appointment schedule that runs on time, warm and friendly staff members, and luxurious amenities all contribute to a positive patient experience at our office. Tell us about your office. Our state-of-the-art facility, serving patients from Plantation, Boca Raton, and Fort Lauderdale, offers the latest dental technology and advanced dental procedures by our cosmetic dental team. We also have amenities such as satellite televisions, comfortable chairs, and soothing décor. Advanced Dentistry of Plantation prides itself on maintaining a clean, efficient office. Hygiene is extremely important to us, so we make sure the treatment rooms, instruments, and tools that we use are thoroughly sterilized and ready for the next appointment. We also value our patients’ time; we understand everyone has busy schedules, so it’s our goal to start and finish appointments on time. What can patients expect when visiting Advanced Dentistry of Plantation? Patient comfort is our goal. The dentists and staff at our practice make patient comfort a top priority and offer many amenities to help put patients at ease. We create a relaxing, friendly environment where families
and individuals can feel welcome and confident about their cosmetic dentist team, and the care they receive. At our practice, we administer anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and other forms of sedation dentistry to make our treatments and procedures as painless as possible. We will work with each patient to ensure that he or she is completely relaxed and comfortable throughout the appointment. The most calming and comforting amenity can be the gentle support and reassurance of our dental professionals. We take a warm and personable approach with everyone who sits in our treatment chairs in order to help them understand that their dental work is being performed in the quickest, easiest, and most pain-free way possible. What services do you provide? Of course, we take care of all general dentistry needs, but we also offer Cosmetic Dentistry, Dental Implants, Invisalign®, Restorative Dentistry, Teeth Whitening Treatments, Full Mouth Restoration, Veneers, and all Emergency Dental Care. Additionally, we offer facial aesthetics which include Botox ®, Juvedern ® XC, Kybella ®, and Voluma ®.
Would you like to share any testimonials? Patients have been so happy with their experiences that many that took their time to express their gratitude. These are just a few that I’m happy to share… “I was thrilled to find your staff to be caring and calming. And you all bent over backwards to make me comfortable.” – Meghan “Who would believe that going to the dentist could be a pleasant experience?” – Elliot “For at least 30 years we have been going to Dr. Schwartz. Everyone in the office is pleasant, and professional. We actually look forward to our scheduled dental visits because of the relationship we have developed with the doctor throughout the years. We always refer anyone we know to the office.” – Gus & Pearl ▸▸ New Patient Special - $99 (includes initial exam (D0150), x-rays, and a prophy (D1110) ▸▸ Invisalign Special - $500 OFF plus free whitening ▸▸ Botox Special - Buy one area of Botox (up to 25 units) for $275 (Reg), Get the second area for $200. ▸▸ Juvederm Special - Buy One Regular Syringe of Juvederm Ultra Plus for Reg. $545 and get a Syringe of Volbella for Your Lips at $199 (Reg. $399). espite the soaring temperatures and almost daily deluge of rain, summer is one of the best times to be in South Florida. The snowbirds have all flown home and now those of us who live here can enjoy endless miles of beautiful beaches, easy access to the region’s outstanding restaurants, and a chance to experience all the attractions our community has to offer. After all, there is a reason approximately 30 million tourists visit the tri-county area each year. Get in touch with nature with an airboat ride through the Everglades or charter a boat and go deep sea fishing. Take your taste buds on a journey every Monday night at the Food Trucks at Arts Park in Hollywood or sip and savor a cocktail while watching the sunset at one of the many beachfront bistros. Speaking of the beach, that’s a great place to beat the heat. Pack up the cooler with icy cold drinks and enjoy a day of sand and surf, just don’t forget the sunscreen. Water parks and indoor activity centers are another option for wholesome family fun. Whatever you choose to do this summer, enjoy yourself and stay safe. Remember it is hurricane season. Make sure you have your emergency supplies ready, with at least a three-day supply of food and water for each member of your household. Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

Plantation General Hospital Celebrates Their Youngest Survivors BY BEVERLY PERKINS
W
ords cannot describe the feeling one had when attending Plantation General Hospital’s (PGH) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Reunion at Nova Southeastern University Rick Case Arena in early May. However, words to describe those in attendance would be positive attitude, optimism, perseverance, and courage. These quality characteristics got all of them through the most difficult times when their babies were born and needed highly specialized medical treatment. Many participated in the March of Dimes walk prior to coming to the annual event celebrating nearly 1,600 children born at Plantation General Hospital. It was the perfect segue and opportunity to gather with other families who shared similar journeys and stories. Over 100 former patients and their families were able to reconnect with the doctors, nurses, and staff who
cared and nurtured them so genuinely during their first stages of life. The Plantation General Hospital NICU is renowned for their excellent care, outstanding Level III facility, patient education, and compassion. Teaching patients on topics such as breastfeeding techniques, sleeping positions during their “Back to Sleep” program, and celebrating National Kangaroo Month which promotes skin to skin contact with mothers with infants in the NICU are just a few significant issues that reign supreme. “Our nurses’ dedication what makes PGH NICU stand out from other hospitals. Their loyalty not only to PGH but to their moms and babies,” exclaimed
Raquel Alderman, Director of Marketing for Plantation General Hospital. “We are Level III NICU, which means we have newborns as small as 22 weeks gestation. Breastfeeding is our number top priority, and we have two dedicated LC NICU consultants to assist and teach new mothers.” Anyone who attended the grand celebration could feel the love and happiness that surrounded the space. A magician, DJ, and face painter were sure to entertain and celebrate these little champions. The smiles were contagious and the laughter infectious as the children enjoyed snacks and played games with each other and those that took such great care of them before they graduated from the NICU.

nfortunately, community reporting has had a similar effect just as the oldfashioned game of telephone. Most remember and have played the game where a group of people whisper a simple sentence into the next person’s ear one by one until the last person reveals the message. The results are always amusing since it is significantly different than what was initially stated. Just like the game, this elementary miscommunication exists in the City of Plantation, and probably many others. However, it’s not so funny when citizens have the incorrect information in which they believe to be true. Fortunately, the City is aware of the problem and came up with a solution. The City of Plantation has a new campaign encouraging residents to get all the real facts straight from the source. They are not providing just one source of communication either; they want to be sure everyone is included. Besides their official City website, they have many social media platforms, a city email, an emergency hotline, their own radio station, and a new emergency alert program.

A “Beary” Special Picnic with a “Beary” Special Librarian BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
couple of months ago, South Florida families gathered in the courtyard at the Helen B. Hoffman Library for the annual “Teddy Bear Picnic”. The anticipated event has become a Plantation tradition. The festivities include storytelling, book readings, and a performance by the children violinists from America’s Suzuki Music Academy. Older family members and friends bring picnic lunches and blankets while the little ones bring their favorite teddy bear. The fuzzy friends are the perfect companion for story time before they march in a parade to the grand finale song, “Teddy Bears Picnic”. The Helen B. Hoffman Children’s Library has been the home to the family event since The Broward County Storytellers Guild elected to hold the first “Teddy Bears Picnic” over 25 years ago. The organizer and master of ceremonies for the annual event is the much beloved Ms. Miki, who heads the chil-
dren’s library. “Ms. Miki has introduced generations of parents and children to the world of literature and expanded the imaginations of parents and children alike,” said Richard Coff, Director of Suzuki Music Academy. “She is truly a treasure, and the children adore her. The fun-filled story time programs she presents each
week at the library and her colorful personality are legendary.” After teaching for twenty years, Ms. Miki decided to become a children’s librarian. Known for her energetic and spirited storytelling, as well as her ability to engage with even the youngest children she is a popular fixture at the Plantation media center. The Mississippi-born librarian uses her distinctive accent to give larger-then-life presentations to capture her young audiences.
“When I was younger, I was ‘cheerosity in motion’. I never stopped talking and loved attention,” exclaimed Ms. Miki. “I knew I wanted to work with children. My favorite part of my job is learning new things from my young customers.” The small city library has a warm, personal, and inviting approach which is why many big and small enjoy visiting. Besides the picnic many other special events are always happening. “I wanted to attract older children to the library, so I formed the Puppeteers, one of the key attractions of the library,” added Ms. Miki. “Since the children were coming to rehearsals at the library, their interest in books increased. Another benefit of joining the Puppeteers is that children who struggled with a lack of confidence in social communication skills could overcome this barrier through this creative outlet.”

Covenant Village of Florida Residents Rock! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
K
indness is contagious, uplifting, and inspiring, and one individual took it to a whole new level a few years ago after walking on the beach in Cape Cod. Megan Murphy would clear her mind and pick up sea glass and rocks. She thought of them as “good signs” to help her when she herself was having a bad day. But, one day she was inspired to write a positive message on a rock and leave it for someone to find. Fast forward a few hours later and she received a call from a friend who happened to find the rock. She didn’t admit that she was the one who left it but was elated to hear that the sweet words changed someone’s day for the better. It was in that very moment which she started the Kindness Rocks Project. Fortunately, the project took off and others of all ages, all over the country and around the world, began their own movements following the Kindness Rocks Project’s mission, “One message at just the right
moment can change someone’s entire day, outlook, life” including residents from Plantation’s Covenant Village of Florida (CVF). These talented seniors have spent their time painting rocks over the past few months and distributing them throughout various locations around town. Those lucky enough to come across one in their travels will find positive words and phrases. The purpose of the project is simple; communities can spread
joy and help others through a simple act of kindness. “People come to pick up shells at the beach and now they will pick up a rock and get some inspiration. They will know that someone was there before them and was thinking of them and sending some love,” exclaimed CVF resident Pat Dougherty. Recently, the Covenant Village of Florida residents went outside their zip code and headed to the Dr. Von D. Mizell and Eula Johnson Beach State Park in Dania to distribute their creations around Dania Beach as part of the grassroots movement. “People always focus on the negative but there is so much good and so much to be thankful for. When you see an unexpected rock with a great message, it shifts your focus,” said CVF resident Doris Tiong. “A simple word can make you think, it can bring a smile, it can encourage you and remind you. Anyone can relate and find a connection to the word or phrase found on one of these rocks,” added CVF resident Nancy Anderson.

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
Gecko ParX Brings the Next Generation of Indoor Entertainment to South Florida BY STACEY BOMSER
G
ecko ParX appeals to the young and the young at heart. The 40,000 square-foot indoor entertainment center caters to children of all ages, families and corporate clients. From fun family outings and children’s birthday parties to conferences and team-building retreats, Gecko ParX is unlike any other venue. Founder John Duran explains more about the Gecko ParX concept and what you can expect to find there. What is Gecko ParX? We are South Florida’s newest indoor entertainment venue where you can jump, play, practice, compete and, most importantly, have fun. Gecko ParX offers 40,000 square-feet of exciting attractions including a trampoline court with interlocking trampolines, basketball slam dunk courts, ropes courses, dodgeball courts, an American Ninja course, parkour, rock climbing, multi-attraction pit for jousting and slackline, a children’s soft play area, and much more. In addition, we offer an arcade with state-of-the-art games, café, and seven private party rooms offering 180-degree waterfront views. It’s truly an unbelievable experience. Please describe the facility. Gecko ParX was created for all demographics, including all ages and genders. It is a heart-pounding experience for clients who enjoy physical activities and want to participate in our ten different attractions. There is also a mezzanine deck created exclusively for adults who want to enjoy a more relaxed ambiance. They can plug in a laptop, relax with a beer or glass of wine, and watch the jumpers enjoy the attractions. The mezzanine area not only provides a panoramic view of the entire facility, but it also accommodates massage chairs and relaxing mood lighting below the deck. Gecko ParX was custom designed so all ages can enjoy this one-of-a-kind facility. How was Gecko ParX designed for different demographics? My main purpose in creating this concept was to create a place for everyone to enjoy. Gecko ParX offers a soft play area for toddlers, as well as ten actionpacked attractions designed for kids, teens and adults. There is even an area that turns into a dance floor
20 JULY 2018 | OURCITYPLANTATION.COM
with a live DJ, ideal for our teen socials as well as private functions. The mezzanine deck, complete with massage chairs and bar stools overlooking the facility, is the perfect place for adults to relax and unwind. What is your background? I have 25 years of experience as an owner/operator in the family entertainment industry. I was the cofounder of Riptide Entertainment, which owned and operated several Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museums. I also sit on the advisory boards of multiple companies within the family entertainment and technology sectors. My years of experience and passion for family entertainment motivated me to open Gecko ParX, a venue that appeals to all ages where the entire family can enjoy time together. How do you ensure customer safety? Safety is a top priority at Gecko ParX. Our welltrained staff supervise each section of the facility to provide assistance on how to properly use the attractions in a safe manner. Each staff member has received crowd management training and is specifically trained and certified for each attraction. The trampoline and soft play equipment are top of the line and made in the United States under strict quality standards. We adhere to a 250 pound per person weight limit to utilize our attractions. In addition, all participants must complete a waiver. Why should someone host their next event or party at Gecko ParX? This facility was created to host top-shelf events and parties. Our seven, oversized private party rooms, with 180-degree water views, make Gecko ParX stand out from all other venues. The space is set up for mixed usage, as it can host a child’s birthday party as well as corporate events. The modern layout, with its diverse and pleasant ambiance, can accommodate events ranging from ten to more than 500 guests. Gecko ParX takes pride in providing the highest level of customer satisfaction. Our event planner’s unparalleled sense of urgency and diligence, coupled with our party hosts’ customer service skills, ensure all events are a success and all guests have the best time possible. What types of party or group packages do you offer? Whether you are celebrating a Sweet 16, graduation, or any other event, we can customize a package just for you. Birthday party packages start at just $350 and include one hour of jump time plus 45-minutes
in a private party room. Gecko ParX provides pizza and unlimited water and soda. Our party host will take care of all the details, including all set-up and clean-up. We also offer customized packages for corporate events and special occasions. Besides the attractions, what types of programs do you offer? We offer ninja training classes taught by Julio Santiago, who was featured on the TV show American Ninja Warrior. We also provide personal training in parkour. Other programs include Mommy & Me, for mothers or caregivers with children from six-months to three years of age, and Tumble Tots. These professionally designed classes will help stimulate and encourage babies and toddlers to use all their senses while playing, exploring, crawling and learning in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. In addition, we offer a variety of evening programs for older kids. On Parents Night Out, we offer three hours of full activities and supervised fun for children ages six to twelve. We also host Teen Socials on select Friday nights for ages 13 to 18. Teens can enjoy access to all the attractions plus dancing with a live DJ. How much does Gecko ParX cost? We offer a variety of passes and promotions. The onehour pass offers access to seven attractions (trampoline, dodgeball, basketball, ninja course, parkour, slackline and jousting) for $19.99, while the two-hour pass is only $24.99. A rock climbing pass is $4.99, while the ropes course pass is $9.99. Our Ultimate Pass, for $45.99, offers two-hours of access to all nine attractions, as well as a $10 arcade card. For little ones, under 42-inches, we offer an all-day soft play pass for only $9.99. Be sure to check out our website, www. GeckoParx.com/tickets, for special promotions. What is the significance of the name Gecko ParX? When my family moved to South Florida from San Francisco two years ago, I was astonished by the many different types of reptiles we encountered. So, when brainstorming a name for the business, I thought of Gecko ParX. n Gecko ParX is conveniently located at 3305 Corporate Avenue in Weston, between Royal Palm Boulevard and Griffin Road. Gecko ParX is open every day except Monday. It offers daytime and evening hours; 10-11am is reserved for children less than 42 inches tall. For more information visit www. GeckoParX.com or call 954-526-8180.

South Plantation Journalism Student Awarded Fellowship BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
s the 2017-2018 academic year closed, Megan Leiter, a rising senior at South Plantation High School (SPHS), was awarded an $800 stipend from the Culpepper Journalism Foundation (CJF). This fellowship will allow her to attend the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications (CJF) Summer Media Institute. Megan Leiter wins the 2018 Culpepper Journalism Fellowship’ Following in the steps of classmate Anna Winslow, last year’s recipient, Leiter is the 36th fellowship winner from SPHS to receive the prestigious honor since the program’s inception 21 years ago. Over two decades ago, The Culpepper Journalism Foundation was established to honor Dr. Alyce Culpepper after she retired from Broward County Public Schools. The purpose of the foundation is to promote excellence in scholastic journalism just as the exemplary educator did in her classroom, while providing educational and financial assistance to high school underclassmen to they can attend summer journalism programs at universities. Leiter joined The Sword and Shield newspaper staff as a freshman and has held leadership roles as Sports Editor (sophomore) and Centerfold and Copy Editor (junior). As a fellowship recipient she is required to be on the staff the next year, so in 2018-2019 she will be Editor-in-Chief. “During my three years on The Sword and Shield, the school paper has improved, and I hope to continue developing it as Editor-in-Chief,” exclaimed Leiter. “The things I learn at this program will go beyond newspaper and will help be succeed in college and the workforce.”
When asked about her most challenging story this year, Leiter said her most challenging assignment was the centerfold for Hurricane Irma. “The topic was harsh and involved research and interviews from a wide range of people at my school. I wanted every victim to have a voice in the piece, so I included animals from the horticulture program and pets in the neighboring areas that had been separated from their owners,” explained Leiter. “I also added photos and a unique design to get my message across and capture the readers’ attention.” “Megan will have the unique opportunity to experience new perspectives allowing her to advance her journalism techniques,” said Adviser Stephanie Polin. “She typically meets her deadline early and uses the extra time to copy Anna Winslow (the 2017 CJF fellowship edit pages/articles for print making her winner) and Megan Leiter (the 2017 CJF winner). Both share Editor-in-Chief duties after an effective Copy Editor.” attending the UF Summer Media Institute. In addition to her journalism duties, Leiter is enrolled in the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet program and has been an ER Ambassador since Freshman year and a Camp Everglades counselor where she helps new magnet students adjust to high school. The ambitious student maintains a 4.87 GPA and has over 172 community service hours. So far, the CJF has awarded more than $41,000 to local students to help cover the summer tuition at different universities throughout the United States. More information can be found at CulpepperJournalismFoundation.Weebly.com as well as the Culpepper Journalism Foundation Facebook page.

When planning you child’s birthday party, it’s good to get some help during the big day.Ask your close friends, family members or other parents if they can assist with set up, volunteer during the event with activities and with taking photos, and to help close down theparty. This will be a big weight off your shoulders and help youto enjoy the moment and savor the special memories.
Selecting the food for a kid’s birthday can seem like a trying task. But kids are typically not picky eaters. Most like simple food, such as pizza or chicken fingers. Be sure to ask their parents though if anyone has food allergies. It may be a good idea to pick a variety of food options for the kids and parents to
TIP 9: Get some Party Helpers.
TIP 10: Hand out memorable party favors. Be sure to thank your guests with unique party favors so they will remember your child’s special day. Some cute ideas for party favors include art kits, coloring books, themed stickers, pictureframes and custom stationery. Whatever you decide to do for your child’s birthday, make it aspecial day that everyone will remember and one that your child will cherish!
TIP 7: Choose fun and trusted entertainment. When booking entertainment for a kid’s birthday at your home, search for entertainment companies that have good reviews and have been recommended by friends. Feel free to ask them

MESSAGE FROM FIRE CHIEF
Straight from the Source BY E. LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF
I
n last month’s issue we chatted about hurricane preparedness. This storm season has already started off with an early tropical system that appeared in the Gulf of Mexico back in May. We need to take that as a sign that storm readiness is no joke. Readiness involves two key pieces, preparedness, which we talked about in June, and getting accurate information. There’s an old colloquialism that implies if you want the truth it needs to come “straight from the horse’s mouth.” Not to imply that the City is a horse, but we are encouraging all citizens to get accurate information about the City and emergencies by going “Straight to the Source.” The City of Plantation has gone to great lengths to ensure that you, our citizens, get the right information, at the right time, so you can make the right decisions for yourselves, your family, or your business. Plantation provides a myriad of communications avenues, all designed to keep you informed and updated on City-wide events, City business, and
crisis management. Did you know the City has its own AM radio station? WQFL, 1620 AM is on the air 24 hours a day with the latest news about the City. During an emergency messages specific to Plantation are broadcast over the radio. So, go up in the attic and find that old transistor radio, then set your dial to 1620 AM. Also, during a storm you can call the citizens hotline at 954-585-2363. All the information that is broadcast on the radio or Tweeted out is available there as well. In times of crisis many of us turn to our faith for guidance and support. Faith-based organizations have always played a major role in crisis response. We are excited to announce that beginning this year the Plantation Association of Clergy will also be playing an active role in ensuring our citizens get the correct message. Through them we will distribute information which they will then redistribute amongst their congregations. We are looking forward to a great partnership. Want to stay even better informed? The Police Department has put up a new messaging system
called Everbridge. Everbridge is a cross-platforming app for cell phones that will send important and critical messages through Twitter, Facebook, texting, email, or any of the message options you choose. And, you can select which types of messages you get as well. It does require that you sign up and create your own account. You can sign up for Everbridge by following the link on the City website at www.plantation.org. So, don’t let fake news or other online pages send you down the wrong path. Stay informed and get the most accurate information available. Go straight to the source. You can find links to all the information sources at Plantation.org. For more details and safety tips on how to prepare, visit our website at www.Plantation.org or visit the FEMA preparedness website at www.Ready.gov. and follow us on Facebook.com/City of Plantation Fire Department.

SCHOOL NEWS
Plantation Schools Participate in a Countywide Day of Service BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
n late April, Firewall Centers held its fifth annual Serve-A-Thon where over 500 Firewall students, their mentors, and volunteers engaged in seven meaningful service projects throughout Broward County. Bair Middle and Plantation High Schools were two of the fortunate schools to to participate in the program. “Serving is at the core of what we do. So, when our students serve the elderly, feed the homeless, and give back to the community at large, they are living out what it means to be a servant leader,” said Andy Fernandez, Firewall Centers’ Executive Director. Serve-A-Thon is a countywide day of service during which Firewall Centers partners with local
nonprofits to teach Firewall students, who come from poverty and difficult circumstances, the value of serving and impacting the community. A group of Firewall students from Bair Middle School sorted through 25,375 pounds at Feeding South Florida, providing 21,145 meals for hungry families while Firewall students from Plantation High School visited three Broward County nursing homes through Heart2Heart outreach of South Florida, a non-profit that connects community organizations, churches, civic groups and local businesses to elderly care centers. While there, the excited Colonels played games and read with the residents, taught the residents how to text and video chat on their phones so they can communicate with their families, and cleaned the facilities. This year’s presenting sponsor was Guy Brickman of State Farm. Other generous sponsors included Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits of Florida, Centennial Bank, Tito’s Handmade
Vodka, and Steel Fabricators, LLC. “Over 65% of long term care center residents in South Florida will never be visited by a friend or family member. We see incredible value in creating intergenerational connections between students and seniors. Students can learn so much from the residents who are so eager to share their stores. In return, the residents feel valued and embrace the lively conversation,” said Blake Silverstrom, Executive Director of Heart2Heart Outreach of South Florida. Learn more about Firewall Centers and how you can get involved at www.firewallcenters.org.

evelopmental Flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern. Flatfeet are a genetic problem. Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. Congenital bone abnormalities as well as trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch can cause flattening of the arch and foot. A common cause of developmental flatfoot is tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity. Symptoms include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Leg pain, especially at night, and premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers, is another symptom. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. It is occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain. Signs include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. Knock-Knees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination or when the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability. General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly occurs due to the deformity. Treatment begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination may be prescribed. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position may be needed. In most cases this will overnight correct the fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases, when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child. Prognosis is excellent, especially with timely management of the problem. heumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder which affects the lining of the joints, causing painful swelling. Ultimately, over time, rheumatoid arthritis may result in bone erosion and joint deformity. The autoimmune illness occurs when the immune system wrongly attacks its own body’s tissues. The inflammation can eventually destroy the cartilage and bone within the joint. The tendons and ligaments that hold the joint together will then weaken and stretch. Gradually, the joint will lose its shape and alignment. Doctors are still not certain of why this process may occur, although a genetic component appears likely. While the genes don’t actually cause rheumatoid arthritis, they can make one more susceptible. Viral and bacterial infections may trigger the disease as well as other risk factors including: sex, age, family history, smoking, environmental exposures, and obesity. Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include: ▸▸ Tender, warm, and swollen joints ▸▸ Joint stiffness ▸▸ Fatigue, fever and weight loss These may vary in severity and may even come and go. These “flares” alternate with intensity, and then fade or disappear for a while. It’s been known that early signs rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect the smaller joints first. These being the joints that attach your fingers to your hands and your toes to your feet. As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders. In most cases, symptoms occur in the same joints on both sides of your body. About 40 percent of the people who have rheumatoid arthritis also experience signs and symptoms that don’t involve the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many non-joint structures, including: skin, eyes, lungs, heart, kidneys, salivary glands, nerve tissue, bone marrow, and blood vessels. Unfortunately, there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis. But recent discoveries indicate that remission of symptoms is more likely when treatment begins early with strong medications known as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Therapy is also an option, as physical or occupational therapists can teach exercises to help keep joints flexible. Alternative medicine has also been found to be a popular treatment. These may include taking fish and plant oils along with practicing the Chinese martial art of Tai chi, which has been known to reduce pain. If all medications and all other options fail to prevent or slow joint damage, surgery may be considered. Rheumatoid arthritis surgery may involve one or more of the following procedures: tendon repair, joint fusion, total joint replacement, and/or synovectomy (removal of the joint lining). It is recommended to see a doctor if you have persistent discomfort and swelling in your joints. While new types of medications have improved treatment options dramatically, severe rheumatoid arthritis can still cause physical disabilities if not treated. ummer is here! The anticipated season comes with more daylight hours, so we can spend more time outdoors, more time with family and friends, and more time on taking care of ourselves. It’s also a great time of year to spend more time on our health and appearance and it is the perfect opportunity to start aligning teeth for a beautiful smile. Orthodontic treatment could improve esthetics and function for people of all ages. Whether you’ve never had orthodontic treatment, or your teeth have shifted since undergoing treatment, your smile can be improved with orthodontics. But often enough, one wonders when is the right time to pursue orthodontics for themselves or their child? The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends seeing an orthodontist by age 7. Developing malocclusions (also known as a bad bite) can be recognized as early as 2-3 years of age. Early intervention can be taken to redirect the teeth to shift and develop normally, which could reduce the likelihood of needing major orthodontic treatment later in life. Age 7 is recommended because the permanent first molars and incisors are likely to be erupted. This is a great time for orthodontists to evaluate any current problems, anticipate any that may develop, or ease concerns if everything looks normal. At this age delayed dental development, crossbites, crowding, and injuryprone protrusions can be evaluated, and oral habits can also be addressed. If everything is developing normally, close to 75% of children will not need treatment until all of the permanent teeth erupt, if at all. This is usually the case for most children by age 11-12. Evaluating your child’s need for orthodontics can sometimes greatly reduce time and cost of treatment in the future. Many adults assume orthodontic treatment is only for children. Unfortunately, teeth tend to shift over time from forces of muscles and function throughout the course of every day. Retainer wear is a great way to prevent shifting; and is highly recommended by orthodontists. For those who desire a truly beautiful smile, touch up treatment may be ideal. In today’s environment, orthodontic treatment involves light forces and more esthetic treatment options than ever before. Invisalign and lingual braces are great examples of such treatments. Those having restorative dental work may also benefit from orthodontics. When teeth are not retained and shift, restorations can camouflage a minor shift, but aligning teeth properly can result in a much higher quality result, with teeth and gum tissue in proper proportions for the most objectively beautiful smile possible. Everyone’s mouth is different and may require a different approach to maximizing smile esthetics or preventing or correcting malocclusions. A consultation with an orthodontist will help you understand your individual needs. Dr. Ian Lieberman, DMD, MSD specializes in Orthodontics, and has been practicing for almost 5 years. Smile Everyday Dentistry is located at 7500 NW 5th St. Plantation FL, 33317. To schedule an appointment or learn more, please call (954) 682-8000, or visit smileeverydaydentistry.com.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
“JADE”
Contraception Counseling BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
O
ne of the most important contributions to women’s healthcare has been the availability of effective, safe, and affordable contraception. Fortunately, there are many forms of birth control available on the market today. Studies, research, and testing have shown that effective birth control is not only possible, but necessary to prevent much of poverty and unplanned families. Although, there are an array of contraceptive options available in the United States, unplanned pregnancies continue to occur even in today’s modern age. Many of the birth control practices today are much safer than those used in the past, and designed to protect a patient’s health and well-being, as well as reduce the risk of an unplanned pregnancy. These methods may be invasive or noninvasive. The number one factor to consider is whether you want birth control to be a permanent change or a temporary one. Besides abstinence, these methods range from taking a pill to using a prophylactic, a diaphragm or an intrauterine device (IUD). Many women also opt for a tubal litigation sterilization surgery, which is the most permanent choice with a 100% success rate. Newer developments are also to be considered. For example, the NuvaRing is easy to use like a tampon. It releases a steady number of hormones into the body, which results in a 91-99% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy. Another option is a skin patch which also delivers a high dose of hormones into the body to lower the risk of pregnancy and can be equally effective. However, the decision on which type to use is a personal preference but should be discussed with your doctor. Your doctor will discuss the many variables which need to be taken in account when choosing which is right for the patient. These include lifestyle, past medical history, side effects, ease of use, cost, and risks, and how it will affect the patient’s overall health. Certain health problems will reduce the options. For example, if a patient smokes, is overweight, prone to blood clots, or breastfeeding, hormonal methods will not be good options. Those with latex allergies or prone to infections will definitely not be able to use barrier methods. It’s important to remember that all birth control methods have some failure rate, some obviously higher than others. It’s also important to remember that what may work well for one individual may not work well for another. The choice is an individual one. Dr. Jay Cohen specializes in Obstetrics & Gynecology and is affiliated with Plantation General Hospital. He received his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and has been in practice for more than 20 years. All Women’s Healthcare of West Broward is located at 140 SW 84th Avenue, Suite D, Plantation, FL. 33324. DELIZIOSO
The 4th annual “Taste of Italy”, hosted by the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club (PJWC), once again benefitted Make-A-Wish ® America. Guests enjoyed music, raffles, silent auctions, and a delicious Italian meal prepared by Vivace Gourmet Pizza & Pasta. Over $10,000 was raised to help grant children’s wishes.
GIRLS NIGHT OUT
The first annual “Women in Business” event, hosted by the Planation Junior Woman’s Club (PJWC), was a success. Independent women business owners had the opportunity to network and share information about their products and services. From health and wellness items to economic management, party planning, and everything in between, attendees were able to see a variety of samples on display at Deicke Auditorium.
