It’s Time to Go Back to School
I
t is hard to believe that the summer is already coming to an end. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 21st is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well: neighborhood school, charter school, private school or virtual school. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Plantation is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area, in addition to almost every after-school activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it.

2017 Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce Small Business Person of the Year BY BEVERLY PERKINS

n late spring it was announced that Plantation residents Rachel and Larry Gebaide were selected as the 2017 Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce Small Business Person(s) of the Year. In order to receive such an honor, the recipient(s) had to have contributed to the community by conducting a successful and profitable business. Additionally, they had to be involved with the Chamber and give their time, energy, and resources to community projects. The couple received the award at the annual luncheon sponsored by the Broward County Council of Chambers at the Renaissance Rachel and Larry Gebaide Plantation Hotel. The Gebaides are owners of Tastebuds Fine Catering. The premiere off-premise caterers have proudly been serving the South Florida area since 1995, and pride themselves on customizing a perfect menu to accommodate any palate and budget. Their team has grown to thirteen employees, and they have expanded their ability to handle multiple events in the same day. “Tastebuds Fine Catering are long time supportive members of the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce. Last year they became Trustee Members of the Chamber. Their commitment to the Chamber and the City of Plantation is evidence by their participation in so many different charities,” says Siobhan Edwards, President of the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce. “We are fortunate
to have such devoted corporate citizens in our city.” The winners of “The Knot Best of Weddings 2016” have increased their high end catering to include weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, and large corporate events. Seminole Indian Tribe, Macy’s, Broward Health, Baptist Health South Florida, and Becker & Poliakoff are just some of their repeat clients. Tastebuds also does food service in detox centers where they offer whole nourishing foods to help former drug addicts’ bodies to heal. They serve three meals a day, seven days a week to three different detox centers in Broward County. This ser- Rachel and Larry Gebaide, Joninne Morejon and Councilmember Pete Tingom vice brings in approximately $350,000 with anticipated growth within the year. Furthermore, during the summer months their food service employees prepare approximately 250,000 meals in four sleepaway camps throughout the Northeastern United States. They employ 24 staff members as chefs and food service directors, as well as 40 international staff members which travel to the states during the ten week season to work and gain experience in the industry. When asked about working with her spouse, Rachel Gebaide said, “We were together every step of the way. We compare ourselves to a black and white cookie, together as one, but yet so different. We worked in harmony and didn’t even have to talk to each other we just got things done. What a ride!”

mmy-award winning Sesame Street writer Emily Perl-Kingsley, who is famous for bringing developmental disabilities to the forefront of children’s television, recently addressed parents at JAFCO’s “Cocktails & Conversation” event. Kingsley spoke at JAFCO’s Children’s Ability Center in Q&A format with WPLG Channel 10’s Kristi Krueger. More than 120 people attended the event which raised awareness for the unique programs and services offered at JAFCO’s Children’s Ability Center. The program opened with a touching story from one of the Ability Center’s very own parents who son enjoys many of the Center’s wonderful programs. Kingsley then recited, from memory, her world famous Welcome to Holland poem to describe the experience in raising a child with a developmental disability. Kingsley’s son Jason was born with Down syndrome – and she told the audience how doctors told her he would be “nothing”. But at three, he was learning to put small words together and read. At the time, Kingsley wrote for Sesame Street, so she went to the producers and asked to put him on television. “Parents wrote

into the show, amazed that kids with developmental disabilities were that capable,” said Kingsley. Kingsley went onto explain to the audience that it’s normal to feel alone and to feel like you’ve been left in ‘Holland’ without any of the right clothes or tools to survive. She had the feeling of being alone too – this was before the days of social media. “We found another family in the Penny Saver. Until then, we thought we were the only people out there with a child like Jason,” said Kingsley. At the end of the conversation, Kingsley opened up the room to questions, where parents openly asked about Jason and their own kids. “We were grateful to have Emily come and speak to our parents,” said JAFCO Executive Director Sarah Franco. “Emily gave courageous insight and stories that will hopefully resonate with them and remind them that they are never alone in this journey.” Bruce and Michelle Ross were presented with the Welcome to Holland award for their time and dedication to JAFCO. The Ross’ relayed the story of Bruce’s brother who had a disability, but didn’t have a place like JAFCO. Unfortunately, Bruce’s bother has since passed, so they honored him posthumously by naming a bedroom after him at the Children’s Ability Center’s respite home. For more information about JAFCO or the Children’s Ability Center, please contact JAFCO Development Associate Jessica Stein at 954-315-8698 or JStein@jafco.org.

esides celebrating its 60th anniversary, Arc Broward recently celebrated their students in a graduation ceremony in June. Two separate ceremonies were held at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre which began with the preschool commencement followed by the School of HIRE Education ceremony. The festivities concluded with a reception for the graduates and their supporters. For six decades Arc Broward has been dedicated to providing services to children and adults with disabilities and other life challenges. The nonprofit organization has supported students as they work to reach their fullest potential. It was an exciting time as twenty-four preschoolers and seven students from the School of HIRE Education received their graduation diplomas. “We are very proud in the success of our students. Watching them learn and grow is a rewarding experience for our staff, their families and friends who have supported them along the journey,” said Arc Broward President/CEO Dennis Haas.” Graduation is always an inspiring event.”One of this year’s graduates is Ewan. Since birth, Ewan has remained trapped in his own world. He has Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, a rare congenital condition that makes communicating with others almost impossible. Requiring a tracheostomy tube to breathe, Ewan has limited movement and is unable to speak, point, gesture, write, type or use sign language. “Our experience at Arc Broward has been amazing. Ewan’s teachers the past
four years have been so dedicated and loving. And the therapy team always go above and beyond,” said his mother Yasmin Vaeli. In December 2014, thanks to the efforts of Arc Broward and a generous gift from Make-A-Wish of South Florida, Ewan and his family were introduced to a life-changing eye-gaze system allowing him the ability to communicate. As for the future, Ewan will be attending kindergarten at Bright Horizons in Deerfield Beach. Since its inception in 2013, Arc Broward’s School of HIRE Education is an opportunity for students, ages 18-22, with developmental disabilities to obtain and sustain a career/workforce education, community-based instruction and independent living skills. A unique option for post-secondary students, the school provides them with the abilities to prepare them for a career after high school. The students are presented with four vocational track choices, including: culinary arts; warehouse/retail material handling; child and/or elder care; and office/clerical work. Two HIRE Education graduates, Dianne and Dylan, have thoroughly enjoyed their experience in the school and are both grateful for their supportive teachers and the opportunity to make new friends. Dianne started after graduating from Coral Springs High School. “My favorite part of the program was learning how to find a job,” she said. Dylan began coming to the School of HIRE Education in 2014. He has enjoyed the field trips to job sites and summer internships.

Plantation Girl Scout Goes for the Gold BY BEVERLY PERKINS
CAN DO KID
A
mber Langan-Cannon, a Southeast Florida Girl Scout from Sunrise Troop 10892, was honored with the Gold Award in late May. The award is the organization’s highest achievement and highest honor. Only one percent of Girl Scouts worldwide achieve this prestigious accomplishment each year. In order to become a candidate for the Gold Award, a Girl Scout needs to be in grades 9 through 12 and complete a seven-step leadership project that is approved by a Gold Award committee. The year-long project must fulfill a need within a girl’s community (locally or globally), create a change, and be sustainable. It’s not just a “good service project”, it demands the highest level of the scout’s organizational, leadership and project management skills, and networking abilities. At the recognition ceremony, each of the participants were honored for their individual efforts on their personal Gold Award projects. A culmination of over 2,000 total hours were put into the planning, executing and evaluating of these incredible undertakings. With the help of her advisor, Joyce Shraim, Amber’s Gold Award project “Today’s Teen Challenge” focused on the mental health of teens during high school. Amber’s goal was to create a safe space on social media for teens to come together to discuss social, family and school issues commonly experienced by teens. “Amber’s project is amazing because it has reached countless young people. It is a life-changing
project that has touched many lives by making difficult subjects more relatable so teens can understand they are not facing challenges alone,” says Shraim. “Seeing that Amber’s passion for her project is so evident in every aspect of the finished production truly warms the heart.” The compassionate scout selected topics based on the recommendation of experts in teen development, and the results of a survey she implemented with her peers. In addition, Amber developed YouTube videos and podcasts on various topics to continue the project for years to come. When asked why she chose to focus on this topic, Amber said, “I saw many teens struggle with different things and I wanted one place they could go to without having to tell anyone about it.” Amber started with the Girl Scouts in fourth grade, and her favorite part of being a Girl Scout is being able to bond with other girls her age and to help with the younger troops. Currently a freshman at Broward College, Amber hopes to complete her Associate’s degree, then move on to the University of North Florida where she will pursue a Bachelor of Science in ESE Education.
Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida is committed to meeting the needs of today’s girls by providing the Girl Scout Leadership Experience that will help develop skills and create a strong foundation for future success. Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, a United Way of Martin County partner agency, serves more than 12,000 girls in Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee Counties. To explore opportunities to volunteer or partner with Girl Scouts, call (866) 727-4475 or visit www.gssef.org.

Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten (DPK) Enriches Young Minds, Bodies, and Spirits BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
I embarked upon the creation of Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten in order to fulfill this goal.
Kathie Geller O’Dwyer, M.S., C.C.C.slp, Owner / Director of Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten, answered some commonly asked questions about her school.
What sets Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten apart from other preschools? DPK is
How did Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten come about? I sought to return
to work as a speech and language pathologist outside the home when my children were two and three years of age. Unable to find a pre-school that would enhance my children’s interest to learn academics and have fun at the same time,
Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten was created to be an academic-enriching environment for children ages 16 months through 6 years of age. The goal of the school is to build a strong, energetic learner who utilizes all his/her senses to glean information and analyze its meaning.
one of the only pre-schools that has classrooms with narrow age parameters, small class size and additional staff to insure exceptional pupil-teacher ratios. It is also a pre-school with the owner on the premises to preserve quality control in the learning environment. In addition, DPK boasts an exceptional private Kindergarten that does accept children who may miss the Broward County cut off of September 1st.
How long have you been in South Florida? We have been serving
the Plantation, Sunrise, Davie and Weston communities for 31 years.
What type of curriculum does Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten use? DPK utilizes
a curriculum I created called “The Learning Ladder”. This curriculum covers all the different areas of learning in a hierarchy of skills. I was a pioneer in the Child Care industry in implementing a cognitive curriculum of this type.
Please tell us about the facility. The 10,000 square foot,
free-standing building is built on three acres of land with plenty of room for active Pre-schoolers.
There are ten spacious classrooms, a library, music room, gymnasium, Spanish language lab and computer center. Our playground is a safe and secure, huge park-like area with plenty of climbing equipment designed for safety and action.
FEATURE STORY
or over three decades Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten (DPK) has been providing the best educational setting for young children in Plantation Acres. The unique academic setting offers children a fun and exciting environment to develop healthy and positive self-esteems, communication abilities, and learning skills. Additionally, individualized instruction enables each child to learn at his/her own rate in classrooms with a low student-teacher ratio.
Please tell us about your background. I
hold a Master’s Degree in Speech, Hearing and Language Pathology from Adelphi University.
Since graduating in 1972 with my degree, I have taught children with speech and language delays and learning differences in the public schools of New York. I was the Director of Speech and Language Services at Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and Blind and the District Diagnostician for St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. I moved to South Florida in 1982 and built my first nursery school in 1985.
Please tell us about your faculty and staff. The faculty
consists of 24 well-trained staff who have a variety of credentials including, Master’s, Bachelor’s, and Associate’s degrees and/or Child Developmental Associate Credential, as well as extensive knowledge about Pre-School children and their developmental needs. DPK also has several specialists such as Physical Education, Music, Spanish teachers, Reading and Pre-School Computer Specialists, and a SpeechHearing-Language Pathologist. All staff are fingerprinted and cleared through Child Care Services, and have received 45 hours of In-Service training mandated by the State of Florida.
Do you offer flexible scheduling? Depending upon
the age of the children, students may attend two, three or five days a week. The academic day runs from 8:30 a.m. though 2:00 p.m. depending on age parameters. Extended day hours are available from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Do you offer a summer camp program? In addition to DPK’s
academic year that coincides with the Broward County School calendar, DPK offers a wonderful, action packed Summer Camp called Camp Phoenix, which includes swimming daily in our large, heated swimming pool. Beginning in April, DPK offers swim instruction with a licensed Water Safety instructor that is open to the community.
What else would you like us to know about Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten? I
feel that I cannot do a better job for my incoming students than I did for my children and grandchildren. I encourage all interested parents to check out our website and come on over for a tour. The door is always open at Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten.
For more information about Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten, Camp Phoenix and/or the Dolphin Swim Program, call 954-472-4673. Visit the website at www.DPK1. COM .They can also be found on Facebook at facebook.com/ dpkpreschool.

he Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Broward County, Inc. is honoring their Executive Director, Edith Lederberg’s, illustrious 40-year career at a fundraising luncheon being held at the Renaissance Plantation Hotel on August 11th. All proceeds generated will benefit the over 421,000 year-round Broward senior residents. Over the past four decades, Edith has led the organization to become one of the most highly respected agencies in the State focused on supporting the Broward County elder community. Through her leadership abilities, Edith has instilled a unified effort that has enabled the agency to grow, fostering opportunities to make a difference in the lives of so many others.
In 1977 Edith set out on a mission to make an impact to help the senior population sector of the community. Being close with her late Grandmother gave her the tools and skills she needed to do so along with a love of teaching, speaking and writ-
ing. During that year she was hired at the Area Agency on Aging in a public relations capacity, and spent much time meeting political powerhouses and attending many condo association meetings. Thirty years later, in 2007, the Areawide Council on Aging opened their new home in Sunrise, which is named in Edith’s honor. “Hopefully, healthy todays and tomorrows will be my constant comEdith Lederberg Then(1977) Edith Lederberg Now (2017) panions, and the smiles and laughter of my associates, like my Administrative Assistant, Elfarghali, Elizabeth Lombardo, Cheryl Morrow and Cheryl Morrow, will continue to carry sunshine into Mary Tod. “Edith has never wavered in her efforts. my presence,” says Lederberg. “May the success This shared commitment is the bond that makes all of my years, at the Aging and Disability Resource things possible. South Plantation Student Has the “Write” Stuff and Wins Fellowship BY BEVERLY PERKINS
SCHOOL NEWS
A
s the 2016-2017 academic year closed, Valerie Griffin McCarty presented South Plantation rising senior Anna Winslow with the Culpepper Journalism Foundation (CJF) fellowship for 2017. This honor is a stipend to attend the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications (CJC) Summer Media Institute where Winslow went this past June. Twenty years ago, The Culpepper Journalism Foundation (CJF) was established to honor Dr. Alyce Culpepper after she retired from Broward County Public Schools. The purpose of the foundation is to promote excellence in scholastic journalism just as the exemplary educator did in her classroom, while providing educational and financial assistance to high school underclassmen to they can attend summer journalism programs at universities. So far the CJF has awarded 80 “fellows” more than $40,000 to help cover the summer tuition at different universities throughout the United States. Upon their return to their respective schools, the fellowship winners must be mentors to their classmates. “After attending the UF program, I hope to have a better understanding of journalistic writing to help my fellow staff members improve the quality of their writing as some have trouble grasping the style of writing found in journalism,” said Winslow. “Although design, photography and organization are important in any publication, I feel writing is truly the foundation for communication.” For two years Winslow has been on The Sword and Shield newspaper staff, and currently is the Features Editor. Adviser Stephanie Polin said Winslow has “exhibited polished writing and solid reporting with a professionalism far beyond her years.” During the 2017-2018 school year, Winslow will hold the title of Editor-inChief just like her mentor Valerie Griffin McCarty was in 1985.
When asked about her most challenging story this year, Winslow responded that it was definitely about Donald Trump’s first few weeks in office. “Regardless of my personal political views, I knew that as a journalist, it was my job to approach the article objectively,” stated Winslow. “Through writing this article, I learned how difficult is to write about political topics and how important it is to explain both aides of the story.” In addition to her journalism duties, Winslow is the current district champ of girls’ tennis, is a classically trained pianist and has been honored as a member of the Environmental Science and Everglades magnet program for several years. More information can be found at CulpepperJournalismFoundation.Weebly.com as well as the Culpepper Journalism Foundation Facebook page.

Endometriosis and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
ASK THE EXPERT
A
condition called endometriosis happens when an abnormal growth of cells and tissue that normally line the uterus grow outside of the uterus. Endometrial tissue is shed each month during menstruation. Endometrial implants are areas of endometrial tissue found in ectopic locations. Although no one knows the cause of endometriosis, one theory suggests that the endometrial tissue is deposited in unusual locations by the retrograde flow of menstrual debris through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic and abdominal cavities. Another says that areas lining the pelvic organs possess primitive cells that develop into other forms of tissue. It may also be likely that the direct transfer of endometrial tissues during a surgery may be responsible. Most women who have the condition can experience a range of symptoms, and some none at all. However, the most common include: ▸▸ Pelvic pain before menstruation cycles ▸▸ Pain or cramping during intercourse ▸▸ Painful urination and bowel movements ▸▸ Pain with pelvic exams ▸▸ Infertility ▸▸ Chronic fatigue ▸▸ Low back pain ▸▸ Lower abdominal pain Each month the intensity of pain may vary greatly among affected individuals. Some women experience the symptoms worsening while others manage the pain without treatment. A gynecologist may attempt to treat the condition using pain medications and/or medications to control endometriosis growth. Sometimes these methods do not work well enough, and it’s time to discuss other options with your doctor. Laparoscopic surgery is one of the most common procedures that gives a gynecologist a closer view of the pelvic region that otherwise could not be detected by an external physical exam. The minor surgical procedure uses a narrow viewing tube called a laparoscope which is passed through a small incision in the abdomen allowing the gynecologist to view the exterior of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and internal pelvic area. During laparoscopy, biopsies (removal of tiny tissue samples for examination under a microscope) can also be performed in order to obtain a tissue diagnosis. Sometimes random biopsies obtained during laparoscopy will show microscopic endometriosis, even though no implants are visualized. Pelvic ultrasound and laparoscopy are also important in excluding malignancies (such as ovarian cancer) which can cause many of the same symptoms that mimic endometriosis symptoms. If an abnormality is detected, laparoscopy can be used to operate, and most often can be performed at the same time as the diagnosis. The advanced laparoscopy procedure allows a gynecologist to diagnose and treat many gynecologic issues on an outpatient basis. Patients who undergo the laparoscopic surgery can expect recovery time to be much less than those who opt for surgery through a larger incision.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Denny Approaches Pain and Illness the Natural Way BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or over twelve years, Dr. Denny of Integrative Hospital Associates (IHA) has been helping the South Florida community feel great. Dr. Denny is at the helm of his integrative medical practice which incorporates a variety of holistic services and specializes in difficult to treat health conditions. All his patients benefit from having multiple healthcare providers working together as a team to treat complex health issues. Dr. Scott Denny, PhD, AP, DOM, FAAIM, answered some commonly asked questions about his practice. What is the Integrative Hospital Associates (IHA)? Although I have been in practice for more than 30 years, most of that time in New York City and surrounding boroughs, Integrative Hospital Associates was formed when I took on the head of acupuncture services position at Holy Cross Hospital’s Feldman Center for Optimal Heath in 2007. My practice has always provided unique integrative medical services to help patients with chronic illness or chronic pain. In fact, my office is the first pain practice in South Florida to offer Robotic MLS Laser Therapy going back to 2010. Since then I have performed nearly 13,000 customized laser treatments for many painful conditions.
What is MLS Laser Therapy? MLS Laser Therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to treat painful and debilitating muscle, bone and joint conditions. Light energy enters the damaged cells and stimulates inter-cellular activity. This reduces pain in the area of injury and speeds recovery of the damaged cells. It is the most efficient therapy for treatment of these types of conditions that I have used since beginning my practice in 1985. What other services to you provide? Having trained in multiple disciplines including chiropractic, East Asian medicine, and electromedicine, I offer many services including; acupuncture, chiropractic, effective treatments for sports injuries as well as any type of accident or injury. I also provide natural pain medicine injections, herbal medicine, bioenergetics testing, weight loss programs, vitamin injections, pulsed electromagnetic frequency therapy (PEMF), extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ECSW), functional medicine, and
laser therapy to shrink unwanted fat. I also have lasers that can destroy nail fungus. Lasers have been a passion of mine since 1995. What distinguishes you from other practices? Most practices offer one or maybe two types of services and most do not have a collaborative approach to maximize patient treatment results. This is why I have succeeded with difficult cases. For example, a patient with knee arthritis will benefit from MLS Laser Therapy, combined with acupuncture, even with cases that are considered “bone-on-bone.” Or, let’s use the example of a patient with diabetes and neuropathy; not only can we improve the blood sugar issues with our lifestyle medicine program, we can combine acupuncture, chiropractic and MLS Laser Therapy to improve nerve function, increase circulation and dramatically reduce pain in a matter of weeks. This allows the patient to feel better, need less medication, and significantly improve their quality of life. This comprehensive approach is simply unavailable in most clinics. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about the Integrative Hospital Associates? Since I receive so many inquiries for so many types of health conditions, I need some time to review the medical records and review the health history before recommending a course of treatment. However, I still offer a complimentary consultation. Once we complete the initial consultation and evaluation, I will create a care plan following a medical concierge model, where everything that is needed is included from beginning to end. We also offer a complimentary health analysis on our website homepage to help patients organize their thoughts and provide to me detailed information about what’s going on with their health. I want individuals to stop suffering alone and let me and my team of experts get you back on track. To schedule an appointment, please call 954-473-8925. For more information, please visit www.DennyHealth.com. Integrative Hospital Associates is located at 2215 S. University Drive, Davie, 33324

Hemi is an English Labrador Retriever. The beautiful black lab is just under a year old. His favorite person is his human daddy. He likes swimming and playing tag. But, he dislikes fireworks and going in his crate. When he’s not playing with his favorite stuffed bear Brownie, this friendly puppy likes to play tugof-war, go on walks, and take baths. He was last seen wanting a treat from his cookie jar.

GOT NEWS? email editorplantation@ourcitymedia.com
BY THOMAS DIBERNARDO, SUNRISE FIRE CHIEF
A
s we find ourselves late in the summer season, many folks will be squeezing in a last-minute family vacation before the kids return to school. If you’ll be among those staying in a hotel or motel, keep in mind that it is just as important to be prepared and know what you would do in case of an emergency just the same as it were in your own home. Did you know: ▸▸ On average, 1 in 13 hotels or motels reports a structure fire each year. ▸▸ Most fatal hotel fires start in a guest’s room. ▸▸ Cooking equipment is the leading cause of hotel/motel fires. Plan for a safe stay: ▸▸ Choose a hotel/motel that is protected by both smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system. ▸▸ Upon arrival, review the escape plan posted in your room. ▸▸ Take the time to find the exits and count the number of doors between your room and the exit. Make sure the exits are unlocked. If they are locked, report it to management right away. ▸▸ Keep your room key by your bed and take it with you if there is a fire. ▸▸ If the alarm sounds, leave right away, closing all doors behind you. Use the stairs — never use elevators during a fire.
▸▸ If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit. If You Can’t Escape... ▸▸ Shut off fans and air conditioners. ▸▸ Stuff wet towels in the crack around the doors. ▸▸ Call the fire department and let them know your location. ▸▸ Wait at the window and signal with a flashlight or light colored cloth. If your hotel has a pool or hot tub, that is another area worth taking safety precautions. For any body of water, ALWAYS have an adult dedicated to watching children with a direct-line-of-sight and within arms-reach in and around the water. In addition, look out for the following at your hotel’s pool: ▸▸ Is the pool clean, is and the water clear enough that you can see the bottom drain from the deck? ▸▸ Are the surrounding fence and gate latch secure? ▸▸ Does the pool drain grate appear securely attached and unbroken? ▸▸ Do the pool lights appear to be securely affixed to the wall? ▸▸ Are the any handrails or ladders loose or broken? If you notice problems with any of these things, skip the dip in the pool and report the issues to management. Hopefully all will appear in good order, but it is still best to keep children from the pool lights and drain when swimming, to help avoid potential electrocution and entrapment hazards. Be Safe and enjoy the remainder of summer!
