It’s Time to Go Back to School
S
ummer is coming to an end even earlier this year! August 15th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. So, for parents, that means it is time to stock up on school supplies, help your child pick out that lucky lunch box, and remind him or her to finish their summer reading list.
It’s also time to register for after school enrichment programs. There are a myriad of different activities and opportunities, with everything from sports to music and everything in between. Parents also have choices in how their kids are educated. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, a parent must now decide between enrolling their child at their local school, charter school, private school or online learning. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational and enrichment programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to language lessons to Little League. The material has been curated to provide parents with a useful guide to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year. In the meantime, enjoy the last couple weeks of summer break. We’ll be back to school before you know it. Sincerely,
Christy and Terry Jaillet Christy & Terry Jaillet Publishers

Smart Cookies from Plantation Troop 10424 Went for the Gold BY BEVERLY PERKINS
O
ften, when one thinks of Girl Scouts they think about the iconic annual cookie sale. Although synonymous with cookies, these girls offer much more than delicious confections. The vision of the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida (GSSF) is to provide girls a place to explore and achieve their fullest potential making them our leaders of tomorrow. The organization recently held their Gold Award Ceremony honoring the 2018 class of Gold Award Girl Scouts. Nineteen Girl Scouts were presented with the prestigious award including four members of Plantation Troop 10424. The level of commitment to complete a Gold Award project is so great that less than 6% of all Girl Scouts in the world earn it. Therefore, it is a remarkable achievement to have four girls in one single troop earn it in the same year. Marie Brooks, Allison Jimenez, Jillian Meloro, and Emily Pollio were part of the illustrious group of recipients to be honored for their projects. The girls have been together since the beginning of high school and have
now reached this milestone moment alongside each other. Each had a unique focus with a different goal that ultimately addressed issues happening in our society and our environment. Bee Mindful, Marie Brooks’ project, addressed the rapid decline of the bee population and its devastating impacts on our environment. Allison Jimenez’s project, Eradicating the Air Potato, also had an environmental focus, but concentrated on invasive plants and the negative impact they have on our native plant life and ecosystem. The impact of Allison’s project was so great, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida nominated her for this year’s “Girl Scouts of the USA’s National Young Women of Distinction”. This is an honor given to Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors whose Gold Award projects demonstrated extraordinary leadership, had a measurable and

sustainable impact, and addressed a local challenge related to a national and/or global issue. Jillian Meloro’s project, Write Your Heart Out, set out to teach tweens how to use creative writing as a means of coping and a form of expression rather than technology. Finally, Emily Pollio’s project, The Umbrella Project, addressed mental health issues facing teens and raising awareness of these issues while providing key local resources and tips to address these problems. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout in grades 9 – 12 can earn. It is accomplished by completing a service project with a minimum of 80 logged hours. The project must fulfill a need in the community, create change, and be sustainable with long-term possibilities. Gold Award Projects demand the highest level of organizational, leadership, and project management skills.

f you live in South Florida and have any interest in dance, the odds are pretty good you already know the name. With four Broward locations, including two serving Southwest Broward, Dance Theatre has become a prominent part of our community, one fabulous dancer at a time. Accolades? Of course. Dance Theatre has been awarded the prestigious “Reader’s Choice” and “Best in the West” awards multiple times. Trophies? Thousands. Dance Theatre’s elite team of competitive dancers, DTX, receives top awards and overall high scores at virtually every competition they attend. Testimonials? You bet. Just ask any mother in the carpool line and they’ll tell you that Dance Theatre has been like a home away from home for their children. So what is it that makes this place so special? “My answer is always the same,” says owner and Director Michelle Gerlick, “We build beautiful, safe, clean facilities, hire the best teachers in the business, and treat each child that walks through our doors as if they were our very own.” “Awards are nice, certainly, and our trophies are beautiful,” Michelle continues, “but that’s not what we strive for. We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it effectively. We train exceptional dancers, yes, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models that are so important to our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That is why we do this.” Michelle certainly has the pedigree to run one of the nation’s most successful dance programs. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, a June Taylor Dancer, and half of a performance duo, along with her husband Bob, which thrilled audiences the world
over working with the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Tony Bennett. Michelle holds both a degree in Dance from Ohio State University, and a degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern. Her professional credits include performing as a Miami Heat Dancer for the NBA, a “Fly Girl” on Fox Television’s In Living Color, and an NFL Super Bowl Choreographer and Dancer. Michelle has since led her students at Dance Theatre to The Summer Olympics, The Super Bowl, and The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, among countless other extraordinary venues. Still not convinced that Dance Theatre is THE place for your young dancer to train? Consider this...they offer a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 3 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline. They include the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, acrobatics, musical theater and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, etc. In addition, dancers who excel and aspire to become dance professionals may join either their performance company, DTC, which provides entertainment at amazing venues like Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins games, or their elite competitive team, DTX, where they can travel to local, regional and national conventions and hone their skills against the best from other schools. Under the direction of Danielle Mednick, the 2018 Onstage America Teacher & Choreographer of the Year, Team DTX has taken the Miss Junior, Miss Teen, and Miss Senior titles, and just returned from Nationals where they won the Challenge of Champions with their performance of “Secret Annex”. n For those interested in joining the Dance Theatre family, there are several ways. First, you can visit their web-site, www.dancetheatre.net, choose your location, view the Fall Schedule, and register online at any time by filling out the simple form. Second, you may call the studio at 954-423-4500 (for the Plantation Promenade location on Cleary Blvd. & Nob Hill Rd.) OR (954) 434-4443 (for the Southwest Ranches location in the Regency Square Publix on Griffin & 148th Ave.) and speak to someone today. Finally, if you prefer to register in person, you can visit the studios during Fall Registration Hours (listed in adjacent ad). Better hurry though, classes fill quickly!

SPHS Teacher Made His Mark BY BEVERLY PERKINS
J
ames “Jim” Overfield, an original Paladin recently retired after teaching for 46 years at South Plantation High School (SPHS). Although his first year and a half teaching was spent in other Broward County schools, he taught at SPHS for the remainder of his career. Overfield was the first teacher hired by then Principal James Link. Not only was he a lead science teacher, he was the first JV Baseball Coach before eventually becoming Head Varsity Coach. SPHS Retired Journalism teacher Alicia Culpepper remembers him taking care of every aspect of baseball from the uniforms and dugout to raking and prepping the field for every game and practice. The dedicated coach and mentor was affectionately called “Gumby” by his students and his team, and the field was finally named “Gumby Field” in his honor. Alumni often return to visit always leaving notes on his board with saying such as, “Hey Gumby, remember me?” As much as his students remem-
ber him, he never forgets them either. Besides being a beloved baseball coach, he was a popular science teacher teaching every science except Physics. He was also an Adjunct Professor at NSU for 12 years. Parents loved the creative labs he had them perform at Open Houses. AP Chemistry is a difficult subject, but he taught it with zest and love. “I kept teaching all these years because the kids kept me young,” stated Jim Overfield. “The changes in technology has been the biggest challenge for the students. The students use technology before the understand the process. I like to teach the steps and procedures first, check for understanding, and then let them use technology, instead of the them relying on answers they don’t even understand. Technology is great, but we become dependent on it.” His teacher ranking from “Rate My Teachers” was always above average with 4.54 stars. Students left
outstanding reviews showing their support and admiration of Overfield. One example among the many reads, “Amazing teacher, personally one of my favorites. Obviously knows the knowledge thoroughly and makes it fun for the class by incorporating his personal experiences with the topic. Organized teaching and knows how to make a class laugh! Performs lab that capture a student’s attention, but also is relevant to the learned material. Stands up and walks around the room and involves students by asking them questions about the topic. Incredible teacher, one of the best at South!” Overfield may be enjoying his retirement, but one thing for sure is that he will always have class.

CAN DO KID
For the Love of Literature – Local Scout Spreads His Wings to Achieve Eagle Ranking BY BEVERLY PERKINS
O
nce Upon A Time there was an ambitious boy scout named Benjamin Sachs who worked diligently with Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library and Friends of the Library to bring “Little Free Libraries” to Plantation parks. “Little Free Libraries” is not a regular library in a large structure with librarians, thousands of books and hours of operation. One doesn’t need a library card either. These “little” libraries are just that - little. They are colorful pieces of art that look similar to a birdhouse or a mailbox which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. They have become a gathering place where neighbors and community members can share their favorite literature and stories in a fun and unusual way. The notion, “Take A Book, Return A Book” couldn’t be simpler. It’s a borrowing system that the community gets to enjoy. Anyone can stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another to share. The Plantation Middle School graduate is following in his brother’s footsteps to achieve Eagle Scout status. The ranking is the prestigious and most sought after through The Boy Scouts of America. One must complete a minimum of 21 mandatory merit
badges to even be eligible, demonstrate leadership ability, and complete a service project. “I chose my project because I have always loved reading and being at Liberty Tree Park. My love of the feel of a book, having a physical copy that you can take anywhere, contributed to the conception of this project,” said Sachs. “I wanted to make books more accessible for people that can’t afford them, don’t have time to visit a public library, or don’t know how to read so that they can further their learning.” Sachs has been a scout since the first grade, and knew he wanted to place a library next to the playground at Liberty Tree Park where he has fond memories of growing up. He enlisted the help of the Helen B. Hoffman Library Director Monica Knapp, Phil Goodrich from Plantation Parks & Recreation, a few troop parents, and of course his supportive parents, Scott and Eileen. The project took 8 months to complete and a total of 300 hours. Although it’s complete, Sachs plans to continue collecting books and maintaining his endeavor. Look for Benjamin’s “Little Libraries” at Liberty Tree Park (7421 NW 5th Street) and Seminole Park (6600 SW 16th Street). Locals can also find one at the Jim Ward Community Center (301 NW 46th Avenue).
If you have gently-used paperbacks or hardcovers you’d like to contribute, please place them in any of the Little Free Library nearest you or bring them to The Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library, 501 N. Fig Tree Lane, Plantation.

Watching…Always Watching – Plantation Acres Launches a Neighborhood Watch BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he City of Plantation has a multitude of Neighborhood Watch Programs which have been extremely beneficial. The community action program establishes a formal network of communication and cooperation between neighbors and the City’s police department with the common goal to reduce crime. Most recently, The Plantation Acres Homeowners Association (PAHOA) proudly launched their very own Neighborhood Watch program as an extension of their voluntary HOA. Although the community is
extremely close-knit, the topic of an official “watch” was discussed in detail at their April HOA meeting with Plantation Police Officer Eugene Nelson. PAHOA President Doc (Ed) Szerlip nominated Donna McCormack and Jenn Fain to gather information and the neighbors’ thoughts. Plantation Acres neighbor Brian Hixson was designated to be the liaison to the Plantation Police Department. After conducting a poll on the
social media app Nextdoor to determine residents’ interest, the program was implemented almost immediately. Like other Plantation communities, the purpose is to make Plantation Acres a community centric place that fosters safety and security. Additionally, the volunteer group wants to be sure neighbors are prepared for hurricanes and assist in recovery efforts if needed. “The neighborhood watch is a viable successful functioning entity that brings all the neighborhood together working for the common goal to identify and defeat illegal activity within our community,” said Dr. Edward N. Szerlip PAHOA President. “Certainly, Plantation Acres Homeowners Association would want to support and work with a proven functioning organization to help rid the neighborhood of crime.” Meetings will take place on the 3rd Tuesday each month at 7:00 pm at Volunteer Park (except July and August). Informal meetings will be scheduled when needed. “It is Jenn Fain’s and my intention that the Plantation Acres Homeowners Association Neighborhood Watch is not only a crime prevention tool, but a tool that will help us continue to connect with our neighbors and prepare us to not only fight crime but to continue to foster a community awareness to prepare us to weather any storm, natural or manmade,” added PAHOA Neighborhood Watch Co-Chair Donna McCormack. To get involved in the Plantation Acres Neighborhood Watch, please visit www.pahafl.org or to get involved in other communities, please contact LBraden@psd.plantation.org.

There’s Nothing Shady About Plantation’s Tree Program BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or over four decades The City of Plantation has utilized their “Street Tree Program” to increase the City’s tree canopy, stabilize the earth’s environment, and enhance its residential and public streets. From Gumbo Limbo and Tamarind to Silver Buttonwood and Live Oak, the City of Plantation uses a variety of species to improve the landscape. Thanks to the City of Plantation’s Beautification Fund, there is no cost to residents. The number of trees planted each year are determined by the budget. Those interested in participating need to apply and provide their information on the Street Tree Request List. The Public Works Landscape Division will conduct a site visit to see if the property qualifies. This visit will determine if the site meets the exact requirements, appropriate tree species, and placement of tree(s) in accordance to swale size and location. Once confirmed, the property owner will be notified, and the tree(s) will be purchased and scheduled for planting. The property owner will then be responsible to care for the tree which includes watering, fertilizing, and keeping the tree free from injury. Single-family residences, neighborhoods, and communities are eligible. However, some Planned

Residential Developments (PRD) and some subdivisions governed by homeowners’ associations may not meet the criteria. Another incredible program commemorates milestone events and achievements while enriching the City with canopies of green. The “Trees for Tomorrow” program allows residents and friends of Plantation to donate a tree to honor someone and/or give recognition of a significant occasion such as a birth or a company benchmark. These trees are planted in City parks where everyone can enjoy them. Additionally, a plaque will accompany the tree stating the common name of the tree and who it was planted in “Honor or Recognition of”. The species of trees to be planted will be decided by the Department of Design, Landscape, and Construction Management and the Parks and Recreation Department to keep consistency of the parks’ canopy. Requests will be taken and considered, and the City will supply, plant, and maintain. If you would like to participate in The Street Tree Program or a Tree for Tomorrow, please visit www.plantation.org and complete the request form or call 954-452-2535 or 954-585-2360 for more information.

Sandpiper Elementary Students Get the 411 on the 911 BY BEVERLY PERKINS
S
andpiper Elementary students had the opportunity to visit the Sunrise Police and Fire-Rescue Departments before the 2017-2018 school year ended as part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program. KAPOW, now in its 27th year, serves over 6,000 students annually. The unique collaboration between the school district, almost 200 area businesses partners, 500 volunteers, and 75 South Florida schools introduces and exposes students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. During the field trip the second-grade sandpipers had a behind-the-scenes look at the Sunrise Police Department. They saw the briefing room and gym where they learned about shift work, rank and supervision, the types of calls officers respond to, and the importance of working out and staying healthy. They also visited the shooting range to learn about the vari-
ous training methods officers need to participate in to qualify with their weapons, and they toured the jail. The morning concluded with a question/answer and photo session with the Chief and Deputy Chief. There’s nothing more beneficial than giving children the opportunity to learn in a real hands-on environment. In this case, the KAPOW partnership, enabled children to engage with their local police officers and firefighters. “At Sunrise Fire-Rescue, we are always happy for the opportunity to engage young minds. During the fire station tour, we wanted to show Sandpiper Elementary’s KAPOW Program students ‘a day in the life of a firefighter’ - hopefully illustrating how the knowledge and values they learn in school are important in a job like ours, while also making a personal connection with them,” exclaimed John McNamara, City of Sunrise Fire
Chief. “The kids were wonderful participants. They gave us their full attention and asked a lot of questions that showed their interest in what we do and our role in the community,” “The KAPOW program bridges the gap between what students learn at school and how it applies to the real world of work. The program exposes students to various careers they never knew existed and allows them to have practical goals for the future. Our volunteers connect with kids by sharing their pathway to success and becomes a valuable mentor in the classroom,” explained Tania Reynolds, KAPOW Program Director. n KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For more information about volunteering or how your school can participate, email KAPOW Program Director Tania Reynolds at taniakapow@gmail.com or call 305-338-5548.

Plantation Homeschool Students Become Memory Masters BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
t’s difficult enough for students to study and do well on final exams, but these exceptional students went on to become masters of memory. To become a “Memory Master” students, ages 8-12, needed to memorize more than 500 facts and complete four separate oral testing events with 100% accuracy. This coveted title is part of the Classical Conversations (CC) homeschool program, and eight Plantation students achieved the challenging goal. Classical Conversations students from the Plantation Classical Conversations community who successfully completed the Memory Master testing and earned the title of “Memory Master” included: Jessica Forero (8), Jenna Forero (12) Nicholette Byrd (12), Sara Levine (11), Steven Christie (11), Ryan Fortier (12), Warren Byrd (9), Adam Byrd (9). Elementary-age students in the homeschool Classical Conversations program may choose to complete an end-of-year oral exam and recite every piece of memory work learned for the year. The four-week process includes two memory recitations to parents or other adults, a recitation for the student’s tutor, and a spot-check exam by the director of the CC community. Each oral exam takes between 45 and 90 minutes, depending upon the age of the child and their ability to quickly and accurately recite the information.
Jessica Forero (8), Jenna Forero (12) Nicholette Byrd (12), Sara Levine (11), Steven Christie (11), Ryan Fortier (12), Warren Byrd (9), Adam Byrd (9).
“The purpose of Memory Master is to encourage and reward demonstrations of excellence in subject memorization and recitation, which are two skills that will serve students well along their educational journey,” said Robin Byrd, Foundations director for the Plantation Classical Conversations community. “Many of our students enjoy the challenge, but only a few are able to complete the entire process successfully.” Material recited included: a chronological timeline of 161 events and people from history, 120 loca-
tions and geographic features, 24 history sentences, 24 science facts, Latin vocabulary and rules, English grammar definitions, multiplication tables to the 15s, common squares and cubes, basic geometry formulas, unit conversions, and all 45 US presidents. The Plantation area hosts three Classical Conversations communities, which meet once a week for 24-30 weeks, depending upon the program. ASK THE EXPERT
Benefits of Running with Orthotics BY DR. JOHN GOODNER
W
hether you like to run 5K’s, 10K’s, Half or Full Marathons, having the proper running shoe is the single most important factor in injury prevention for runners of any level of competition or training. Running shoes must be selected based on the following: past experience with different shoe brands, biomechanical demands specific to the gait of the runner, and environment of the running surface on which the runner will race or train. In addition, current injuries and foot type (pronated, neutral, supinated) must be addressed to maximize running efficiency. If a runner is pronated, or flat footed, they are using more muscle energy to compensate and elevate the arch to a more ideal push off position. This leads to slower racing times, more overuse injuries, and degenerative joint changes to the lower extremity. A custom orthotic can maintain the fallen arch in a more energy efficient position allowing your muscles to work less, creating potentially faster racing times, and decreasing lower extremity injury. A supinated, or high arch, that is flexible can also cause pain and present with similar issues; this can be addressed with a custom orthotic as well.
Going for a run? Check out these injury prevention tips first: How often should I replace my running shoes? It is commonly recommended to replace running shoes every 300-500 miles. This can be difficult to keep track of, so the competitive runner should keep a running calendar to calculate when they will need replacement shoes based on their daily mileage and training schedule. For the more casual runner that does not track their mileage, it takes approximately 66 hours to run 500 miles at an eight-minute per mile pace.
When is the best time to try on new shoes and how do I know they fit? Always try a new pair of shoes in late afternoon, this is when your feet are the largest due to swelling from standing and activity throughout the day. Always wear a cushioned sock when trying on a new shoe. You should be able to fit your thumb’s width in between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. How many pairs of shoes should I be using at one time? For the competitive runner, two to three pairs of shoes should be used. It is best to alternate running in one pair one day then using the second pair the second day to allow full recoil of the shoe cushioning and maximize the life of your shoes as well as decrease your chance of injury. What shoes should I wear when I’m not running or training? Never walk in flat flexible shoes, flat sandals, or barefoot; even around your house. Competitive runners use recovery sandals with arch support and a heel that is higher than the toes. Purchase a good pair of supportive house sandals to prevent stress or overuse injury secondary to lack of arch support. n Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Associate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. The practice strives to teach their patients to develop healthy habits.
Prevention and education are keys for a lifetime of a healthy mouth and healthy gums. The staff is dedicated to helping their patients brush every day, floss every day, and most importantly SMILE EVERY DAY. Dr Sirage and Dr. Criscuolo recently took the time to answer some commonly asked questions about their practice. What differentiates your practice from others? We provide full service care for everyone in the family, from caring for a baby’s first tooth to treating a great grandmother’s gums. We treat all ages from 1-100! From the moment our patients walk into our office they can expect friendly and compassionate service from beginning to end. Our staff likes to treat everyone like family. Do you have a specialized approach to dentistry? Yes, our team takes a minimally invasive approach. We believe in monitoring issues and intervening when necessary. We do not believe in over treatment. We will not let patients in pain go unseen and will make every effort to make room in the schedule to accommodate everyone. All of us are also hospital trained, so we can help those with special health care needs. Which services do you offer? Besides traditional dental cleanings and oral exams for adults and children, we provide teeth whitening, crowns and bridges, root canal therapy, dentures and partial veneers, dental re-contouring, extractions, implants,

periodontal treatments, and laser gum disease treatment. We also provide complete orthodontic care from interceptive treatments to traditional braces, Invisalign ®, and everything in between. Tell us more about orthodontics. Dr. Lieberman, our dedicated orthodontist, is devoted to his patients and makes each experience personal. Each patient is unique and so are their smiles, so their orthodontic plan will be created especially for them. The initial consultation is always complimentary and includes a comprehensive examination to allow Dr. Lieberman to review the best treatment options available. Does your practice have new equipment/technology? We always stay up-to-date on new knowledge, products and equipment within the industry. We are proud to offer iTERO Scanning 3D impressions as well as periodontal laser therapy to treat gum disease. Do you accept insurance? As part of our commitment to offer care to all in the community, we have partnered with most HMO, PPO and state-funded managed care plans. We will most likely be in network. If you have any questions, please give us a call and we would be happy to help you better understand your plan and how we fit into your coverage. ASK THE EXPERT
What is Ankylosing Spondylitis? BY ALAN SIEGEL, M.D. he first response to a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is usually, “What in the world is that?” Although it’s strange sounding, there are more than 200,000 US cases per year. Unlike typical back pain which is caused by some type of trauma to the spine, AS is a chronic condition caused by inflammation of the vertebrae. The inflammatory arthritis affects the spine and large joints making it a form of spinal arthritis. In advanced and more severe cases, abnormal bone growth in the spine may cause the joints to fuse together resulting in an inflexible spine reducing mobility. The good news is that it can be treated by a medical professional. The condition usually begins in early adulthood, in the late teens, and has been more prevalent in men, but women are susceptible to it just the same. However, AS can still develop at any age. It’s been known to be an inherited disease although not everyone with the gene will ever develop it. Symptoms always include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. Spondylitis often starts at the sacrum (the lowest part of the spine). Pain in the back and joints are also common along with intermittent flare-ups of spinal pain. It could be mild or severe, and eventually lead to a hunched over posture. Unfortunately, the disease can also affect other ligaments and tendons, as well as the eyes and intestines. Some patients experience vision problems, and inflammation in the knees, ankles, and beneath the heel. Fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite may also occur. Typical warning signs of the disease are: ► Unexplained lower back pain for no apparent reason ► Unexplained tightness in the chest, pain in heel, and joints ► Pain comes and goes, but significantly s getting worse up the spine ► Temporary relief from over-the-counter medications ► Family history of AS Nonetheless, early intervention and treatment can help control pain and stiffness and may reduce or prevent deformity. A physician cannot give a single test to diagnose AS, but an extremely detailed exam and patient history will help determine the diagnosis. The physician may also order imaging tests such as an MRI, or x-ray. Treatment includes medication, physical therapy, and in rare cases surgery. Remember, it’s always important to not ignore symptoms. Make an appointment to see a physician as soon as any signs exist.

In a world of fast food and convenience eating, it’s hard to always eat healthy, but there are a couple of little tips to prevent cavities. Avoiding sticky, gummy type foods and candies is always the most important. Don’t get me wrong, we all love fruit snacks but the sticky nature of the candy, coupled with the sugar content creates the perfect environment for cavities to form. So, in typical dentist fashion, I must recommend going natural with fruits and veggies as snacks throughout the day. Perhaps mix in some almonds and granola, and you have the making of a healthy diet.
Call Denise Caligiuri f Activity: It’s recommended that kids have at least 30 minutes of cardio activity per day. But in Miami's Commu a lot of times we get caught up in the same routines and so our kids follow suit.

It’s always a good idea to start good habits early. It’s recommended that children ages 3-6 years old should have no more than a pea-sized amount of fluoride-containing toothpaste on their toothbrush. A child’s teeth should be gently brushed twice a day (morning and night). I know the idea of being told to floss, let alone telling your own kids to floss can be annoying, but the truth is that it must be done. So, the real question is what’s a good way to motivate your kids to floss. In my experience, this is a hard sale. But I found that if you can associate the flossing with an activity they do every night, like watching TV or playing video games then it’s much easier to gain a positive result. The key is just to take the initiative and bring them the flosser or other stick type floss device. Once the flossing is done and the YouTube webisode is on break, it’s easy to head on over to the bathroom for a little brushing and rinse with ACT or another children’s fluoride mouth rinse.

To “C” or Not to “C” – The Cesarean Section BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. regnant women typically have a vision of what type of birth they are planning and hoping for. However, one shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a Cesarean section. A Cesarean section, also better known as a C-section, is the delivery of a baby through a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. Although the C-section delivery rate has declined in recent years, the number of women delivering via C-section in the United States is still about 1 in 3. The main reason is when problems arise during labor. In certain circumstances, one may be scheduled in advance, but most of the time it’s done in response to an unforeseen complication. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, about 33 percent of American women who gave birth in 2011 had a cesarean delivery. The C-section rate in the United States has risen nearly 60 percent since 1996. In order to avoid the surgical procedure, or to make it as uncomplicated as possible the first thing to do is to pay attention to weight gain. Research has shown that women who were overweight when they got pregnant are twice as likely as their counterparts to need a C-section. It’s also been noted that obese women are more at risk to have surgical complications and a slower time healing. Other research has shown that overweight women labor longer which could also lead to a necessary C-section. Sometimes, it’s known that a pregnant woman will need a C-section even before she goes into labor. If this is the case, a planned C-section will be scheduled. Some of the reasons why one may be required are the following: ► The person is carrying more than one baby. ► More than one previous cesarean has been done. ► The person has had some kind of invasive uterine sugery previously. ► The baby is expected to be very large. ► The baby is in a breech (bottom first) or transverse (sidways) position. ► The placenta is so low in the uterus that it covers the cervix. ► There is an obstruction of some kind such as a large fibroid. Emergency C-sections are performed if problems arise making delivery dangerous to the mother or the baby. This may happen if any of the following occurs during labor: ► The cervix stops dilating, or the baby stops moving down the birth canal. ► The baby’s heart rate concerns your practitioner. ► The umbilical cord slips through the cervix which can cut off the baby’s oxygen supply. ► The placenta starts to separate from the uterine wall. ► There is an STD outbreak which may give the baby an infection. A good health provider will always be sure to guide their patient in the best delivery option for them regardless of the circumstance. It’s always important and encouraged for a patient to ask questions to feel comfortable about any procedure.

Month
This is Prince. He is a rescue. My daughter used to puppy-sit him, but the last time his mother never came to pick him up. My daughter fell deeply in love with him & prayed to keep him. It took our family about a year to get him healthy and happy. He is our angel & the glue to our family. His favorite person is Mom (Nancy) & his sister (Francesca). He loves..... well, needs all the attention, & being carried around like a real prince, & cheese! He doesn’t like dog food..... so spoiled! His favorite thing to do is go on car rides with his sister, listening to reggae music, drooling out the window.
