Happy Holidays

T

he holiday season is upon us, and while the holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, the one thing we all share is the spirit of community. It was just a few months ago that we witnessed neighbors helping neighbors as we banded together to prepare for Hurricane Irma. And in the aftermath of that storm, strangers became friends and a renewed sense of community was born. In the spirit of the holiday season, let’s rekindle those bonds as we open our homes and hearts. Share your holiday traditions with a family of another faith. Teach your children the true meaning of giving, by donating to a worthy charity or volunteering at a community food bank. And as the new year approaches, take a moment to count your blessings and resolve to become a more active member of your community. The perfect place to start is right here in the pages of this Our City magazine. Each and every issue is packed with stories on all the wonderful activities and programs taking place in your community, along with articles on the amazing accomplishments of your neighbors, young and old. Wishing you and yours a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year!

COMMUNITY NEWS

Hot off the Press – Fire Prevention Art & Literature Contest Winners Announced BY BEVERLY PERKINS

O

ctober was Fire Prevention Month, and the Plantation Fire Department had many activities to bring awareness to the community. One highlighted event is always the annual poster and essay contest in which neighborhood schools are encouraged to participate. Over 40 years ago, in 1976, Marti Terziu developed the contest as a vehicle to bring the fire prevention message home through Plantation’s school-aged children in a creative, yet educational way. Sadly, Ms. Terziu passed away this year, and the 41st annual contest was renamed in her honor. This year’s fire prevention theme “Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out,” reminds everyone to have and practice an emergency escape plan which includes two ways out of every room. “The Marti Terziu Art & Literature Contest” winners were announced and recognized at a Red-Carpet awards ceremony at the Plantation City Council meeting at the end of the month. First place “Literature” winners were Amelie Aquino, Peters Elementary (4th-5th grades), and Brody Rubenstein, Central Park Elementary (K-3rd). First place winners in the “Hand Drawn Art” category were Eileen Evron, Central Park Elementary (4th-5th grades), and Raj Ramnerine, Central Park Elementary (K-3rd). Along with the rename, Bristol West Insurance, a

subsidiary of Farmers Insurance, became the first corporate sponsor which allowed the Department’s Public Affairs Division to expand the program including a category for electronic art. “Fire safety is truly a team effort,” said Fire Chief Laney Stearns. “The impact children have on their parents and families when bringing home the fire safety message is our strongest tool. Education is one of our most powerful weapons against fire and Fire Prevention Week is the perfect tie-in for our annual competition. The sponsorship from Bristol West Insurance really makes this a public-private partnership for the betterment of the community.” Friends of the Helen B. Hoffman Library and the Plantation Art Guild judged the final submissions. “City-Wide” and “Best in School winners were named in three categories: hand drawn art, digital art, and literature.

A complete listing of winners is available on the website at http://www.plantation.org/psd/fire/ fd_poster-essay-contest.html.

Coffee Talk – Plantation Police Department Invites the Community to “Coffee with a Cop” BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Plantation Police Department (PPD) recently held their “Coffee with a Cop” event at Starbucks, located at 7900 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Plantation. PPD staff and officers from different divisions attended the anticipated occasion. The community was invited to stop by, have a Cup of Joe, and mix and mingle with Plantation’s best in blue. They were also treated to coffee and other goodies. “Coffee with a Cop” actually began in Hawthorne, California 6 years ago as a result of a brainstorming session. Members of the Hawthorne Police Department were searching for ways to better communicate and interact with their citizens, and a simple idea of a morning cup of coffee was the perfect solution. The idea spread, and “Coffee with a Cop” events started brewing in all 50 states and is one of the most

successful community oriented policing programs across the country. More than 10,000 events have occurred nationwide. It’s so successful that the program has expanded to Canada, Europe, Australia, and Africa, and the list continues to grow. The framework for establishing trust between the community and the police has always been community policing. However, over time the nation’s communities’ character and composition have changed due to a shift in demographics, influx of commuters, and the introduction of social media and other online communication methods. The reason for its popularity and success is that it opens the door for law enforcement officers and the community to interact in a casual situation instead of a crisis situation. The opportunity allows for real conversations about important matters in a friendly atmosphere where trust can be built. Both officers and citizens learn about each other, form

Chief Howard Harrison with Isaac Ever, Starbucks Manager

bonds, and develop relationships which help weave the fabric of a better community. “It is a great opportunity to get to know us from a personal, as well as a professional standpoint.” said Chief Howard Harrison. “The mission of ‘Coffee with a Cop’ is to break down the barriers between police officers and the citizens we serve.” More “Coffee with a Cop” events are being planned for the future. For more information, please contact The Plantation Police Department Community Outreach Center at 954-916-5601.

Stop and Smell the Bromeliads! COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

n late October The Bromeliad Society of Broward County had their “Annual Fall Auction” at Plantation’s Deicke Auditorium. For over 5 decades the Society has been an essential part of the community. The diverse group of enthusiastic gardeners consists of those new to gardening, those with years of experience, and those who are certified Master Gardeners. The Bromeliad Society of Broward County members along with their supporting Broward and Miami-Dade plant nurseries donated bromeliads from the 13,000 known varieties for the auction. Those who had gardens ruined by Hurricane Irma were rescued by the society’s annual event. Peter Kouchalakos was the Master of Ceremonies, Peter Kouchalokas, Master of Ceremonies and made the evening enjoyable and educational. He informed the crowd of each bromeliad’s type or genus, its’ growing requirements, and a brief history of each plant. Winning bids were as low as $10, which is well below local retail prices, and some lucky bidders even won two bromeliads for the price of one. “Where else can you purchase a plant for the garden for as low as $10 and learn so much about it?” stated one excited bidder.

At every meeting society members learn from guest speakers who share their knowledge on bromeliads, have access to a special collection of books, shop at the country store for gardening supplies, and enjoy raffles and silent auctions. Workshops and a holiday dinner are also a treat for these gardening gurus. Meetings are generally held at 6:30 pm on the 3rd Monday of each month at Deicke Auditorium, 5701 Cypress Road in Plantation. Monthly field trips are also anticipated highlights. Last month members enjoyed a visit to Fairchild Tropical Gardens. “Our Society has been an integral part of Broward County for more than 50 years,” said Becky Blackwood, President of the Bromeliad Society of Broward County. “In fact, in 2014, the Broward County Commission honored our Society with a Bromeliad Society of Broward County Day to celebrate our contributions to the county for 50 years.” Annual membership dues are $30 for a family, $25 for singles, $10 for students. Complimentary refreshments and food are served at each general meeting. Meeting dates change in January, February and December. For more information on the Bromeliad Society, please visit www.bromeliadsocietybc.com.

What are the main areas of practice at the firm? Our main focus is real estate transactions as we have a full-service title company in addition to the law firm. We also handle real estate litigation issues, landlord/tenant matters, collections, contract disputes, foreclosures and general business matters as well.

What differentiates your firm from other law firms? It sounds pretty cliché, but we put the client first no matter what. We’re easily available and I respond to emails at all hours of the day if not available by phone. My staff has been working with our clients through the title company for several years now even before I acquired it, and have formed amazing relationships which lead them to continue using us. Besides being knowledgeable, my staff is also invested in the firm and we make sure any clients’ issues/requests are followed up on and addressed the same day.

What types of Comprehensive Title Services do you offer? All Florida Title Company assists with all aspects of title and real property transactions, including: ▸▸ Owner’s Title Insurance Policies ▸▸ Lender’s Title Insurance Policies ▸▸ Title Searches ▸▸ Title Curative Services ▸▸ Survey and Inspection Services ▸▸ Loan Document Preparation

or over 2 decades, All Florida Title Company has been providing comprehensive title and ancillary services for every type of real estate transaction, regardless of its size, complexity, or differences. Developers, buyers, sellers, realtors, investors, and lenders have known the company to be a true partner in every transaction. At the helm of the operation is owner Attorney Marc Brown, P.A. He recently acquired the title company at the beginning of the year as a perfect complement to his law firm. During his 11-year career thus far, his focus has been on real estate. So, it was only natural to combine the two, and have a full-service attorney owned title company which can handle all commercial and residential real estate issues and closings. Marc Brown personally reviews every file to be sure clients receive the best possible results. His meticulous hands-on approach ensures that all aspects of title services, as well as all legalities that may arise are addressed and handled effectively and efficiently through his title company or his law firm. Attorney Marc Brown took the time to answer some frequently asked questions about his practice.

What are the key things that people should consider before hiring a lawyer?

How do you guide your clients through a transaction? Our clients are never left wondering about the status of their matter. Clear, consistent communication is a core value for us, as are responsiveness and accessibility. When anyone has questions and concerns, we aim to respond the very same day. Additionally, our secure client portal makes it easy to track the progress of their matter. Our online title premium and net sheet calculators allow clients to check the status of their file at any time, and communicate quickly and efficiently with our team of title and real estate professionals. It is also a convenient way to understand the costs involved in the transaction. Our work, and our fees will never be a mystery. Myself and my committed professionals at All Florida Title Company work to swiftly and successfully deliver a clear and marketable title to our clients. We want their transaction closed and concluded, and work tirelessly to resolve a purchase or sale with the professionalism, service and trust each client deserves. We promise competitive rates, consistent communication and fantastic service.

Anyone in the position of hiring an attorney should obviously consider the attorney’s background and experience, but they should also take into consideration the size of the firm. A smaller firm gives clients much more personal attention.

Does the firm offer free consultations? Yes, we certainly offer potential clients complimentary consultations to access their needs and see if we can help them.

Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you or your firm? We offer flat fees that are extremely reasonable. I am available to meet anywhere in South Florida. We have an office by appointment in West Palm Beach, as well as Plantation if it’s more accommodating for the client.

All Florida Title Company and Marc Brown, P.A. are located at 1995 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Suite 310, Fort Lauderdale, FL. 33306. They can be reached at 954-5662200. For more information, please visit their websites www.marcbrownpa.com and www.allfloridatitlecompany.com.

ARC Broward Recognized for their Ability in Helping Those with Disabilities BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

couple of months ago, Arc Broward received recognition from former State Senator/Broward County Commissioner Nan Rich and the entire Board of Broward County Commissioners during their announcement about their participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate the community about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. Arc Broward’s goal is to close the major unemployment gap that exists among people with disabilities. The history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month. “Americans of all abilities must have access to good, safe jobs,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. “Smart employers know that including different perspectives in problem-solving situations leads to better solutions. Hiring employees with diverse abilities strengthens their business, increases competition

W

and drives innovation.” Although October was dedicated to raise awareness about disability issues, Arc Broward has worked together with the community each and every day, regardless what month it is, to change how people with developmental disabilities and life challenges are embraced and included. For over 6 decades, their efforts ensure that those with disabilities not only live, work, and play in their communities, but thrive as well. Reflecting this year’s theme, “Inclusion Drives Innovation”, Arc Broward engaged in a variety of activities to educate the business community on disability employment issues and its commitment to an inclusive work culture. Arc Broward also encouraged Broward County mayors and city commissioners to participate in recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month. “Arc Broward is proud to have been a part of this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” said Arc Broward President & CEO Dennis Haas. “This is a year-round effort for us through our employment-based program Arc Works. Our community can join us by recognizing the value of hiring and supporting individuals with disabilities because it just makes good business sense!” Employers and employees in all industries can learn more about how to get involved with Arc Broward by visiting www. HEALTH CARE

T

he issue of driving is one many seniors and their families will face. It is one that is often inevitable when there is a diagnosis of dementia. It is important to know that a person with dementia usually does not self-limit his/her own driving. And in almost every state, physicians are not mandated to report someone they feel is unsafe to drive. For those reasons, the burden often falls onto a family member to make the decision. When trying to decide if the person should continue to drive, there are many factors to consider other than memory. Families tend to focus on if the person remembers where they are going and are they at risk of getting lost. The solution is to allow driving to continue, but only to familiar locations. However, people with dementia experience deficits in several other areas that are key to driving. For example, it is common for a person to have problems with depth perception. This makes it difficult for the driver to determine how close other cars and objects are. Determining if there is time to pull out into traffic or turn before an approaching car reaches them are some of the issues faced when there is impaired depth perception. Decision making and the ability to anticipate events also becomes more problematic. A driver may see a ball roll into the road, but be unable to anticipate that a child could be running for it. Or he/she may be taxed with deciding quickly what to do when an unanticipated event does occur. Divided attention also can become challenging for a person with dementia. The ability to look at the speedometer and then back at the road can be difficult. The driver may find it challenging to continue to focus on driving, while giving attention to a bicyclist or pedestrian on the side of the road. In addition to problems due to dementia, there are normal changes that occur with aging that bring their own challenges. A decline in vision and hearing, decreased flexibility, and a slower reaction time are common changes that happen as a person ages. All key factors to a person being able to drive successfully. Regular inspections of your loved one’s car for dings, dents, or scratches may help to determine if there are issues, especially with depth perception. Talk to your loved one’s neighbors to determine if they have noticed any problems. And go for a drive with your loved one to observe any possible difficulties. Watch to see if they are signaling properly. Do they check thoroughly before changing lanes? Are they able to properly maintain their speed and the distance between cars? It is important to know that if a senior is involved in a car accident, he/she is more likely to suffer serious injuries than a younger driver. And statistics show that a senior citizen is at a higher risk of death when involved in a car crash, even one that appears minor. If you are concerned about your loved ones driving, please discuss this with his/her physician. Although a doctor is not mandated to report, many are more willing when they know the family is on board. In addition, explore the use of a driving assessment program and tools available which can help in determining abilities and limitations.

More than Just Reading – Library Programs Just Got Insane! SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

s everyone knows, the holidays are quickly approaching. Most often those holidays come along with crazy late-night shopping trips, dining on the go, numerous holiday parties, office treats, house guests, and the dreaded unwanted pounds. However, there’s no need to worry because the Broward County West Regional Library is now offering a fitness class, and not just a basic class, and INSANE one. “Thanks to a very generous contribution from the Friends of the West Regional Library I was able to share with library customers, as well as fellow Broward County employees, a program I am personally so passionate about,” said Kara Geib McGowan, West Regional Librarian. “The class is called Insanity® and it helped me go from 164 to 133 pounds.” Many people may be familiar with the Insanity ® DVD set as seen on informercials by creator and elite fitness trainer Shaun T. A decade ago, Shaun T. created the popular dance-based workout, Hip Hop Abs®, followed by Rockin’ Body®. Both highly successful programs were a phenomenon, but then Shaun T. and Beachbody blew up the fitness world again when they launched Insanity®, a 60-day total body conditioning workout. Of course, it’s insanely difficult as its name states, but it gets incredibly insane results. The body-transforming guru now has a multitude of programs to help those tackle any weight-loss issues, and his clients rave about their results. Regardless if you want to dance off holiday pounds, train like an athlete, or get in the best shape for the new year, the live classes will be led by certified

Insanity® instructors and held three times this month at the local library. The free classes are open for all ages and abilities to participate. Dates are as follows: Saturday, December 16th, 23th, and 30th at 10:30AM. Be prepared for high-intensity interval training (HIIT) designed to keep your body working at maximum capacity throughout the entire workout. Each 50-minute class is a full body workout that includes cardio strength, balance, plyometrics, abs, and stretching, and requires no equipment. It is suggested to wear proper attire and footwear, and don’t forget to bring a towel, water bottle, and yoga mat if you have one. Registration is not required, and all ages are welcome. “The name of the class is intimidating, and it’s not for everyone, as it requires a mental strength to push harder than your body wants to, but in the end rewards are there. I am proof of that,” added McGowan. West Regional Library is located at 8601 W. Broward Boulevard, Plantation. For more information, please call 954-765-1560 or visit www.broward.org/library.

he Miami Dolphins (L-R) Plantation HS Resource Officer Shawn Gilligan, HSPOW TJ Butler, Head Coach Steve Davis, strive to emphasize the Dolphins Youth Programs Manager Troy Drayton importance of education, physical fitness and positive choices for kids in a safe and fun environment in an effort to create leaders of tomorrow. The nonprofit organization, Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), dedicates itself to harnessing the unifying power of sport to advance race relations and drive social progress while developing meaningful educational programming. Together the two organizations formed an alliance to achieve their similar goals. The perfect partnership shows their dedication to promote positive youth programs in educational systems. An example of their joint venture is a sixteen-week awards program which lasts the duration of the Dolphins season. The program recognizes members of the community who have demonstrated their commitment to being leaders on and off the field. Each week, the Dolphins will identify a high school coach of the week, high school player of the week, youth player of the week and team mom of the week. In week seven it was announced that TJ Butler from Plantation High School received the honor of being “High School Player of the Week”. Butler had five

This victory put the 6-1 Colonels in prime position to get the first wildcard spot or possibly engage in a three-team tiebreaker for the district title. “It felt amazing to be recognized the Miami Dolphins High School Player of the Week. It feels good to not only be recognized by the Miami Dolphins organization, it feels good to be recognized by the community as well,” said Butler. Each award recipient is presented with a plaque on the field during a Dolphins home game at Hard Rock Stadium, a pair of tickets to a Miami Dolphins home game, access to the Dolphins/ RISE pregame tailgate, and a Dolphins/RISE T-shirt. You’re Expecting! Now What?

P

atients usually know they are pregnant before they see their physician. It’s advised that once you see the positive colored sign on a pregnancy test it’s time to schedule an appointment. Don’t be alarmed if your first check-up is not scheduled until you are 8 or 9 weeks along, this is normal. In the meantime, start writing down all the questions you may have. The first OB appointment is a great opportunity to get them answered since it’s typically one of the longer visits. During the pregnancy, you’ll have a million more come up, so keep a notepad available to write them down since “pregnancy brain” ultimately kicks in and the memory may start forgetting things. Those that are not first-time mothers need to be prepared just the same as they were the first time since each pregnancy is different. As many questions you may have, the doctor will have questions too. Your medical history is extremely important, so be prepared to have information on the date of your last menstrual cycle, medications, any medical and/or psychosocial problems, family history, hospitalizations, birth control methods, and so on. The healthcare provider will also perform a physical exam which will include a pap smear, cervical cultures, and possibly even an ultrasound if you are unsure to how far along you are, or if you are experiencing cramping, or bleeding. Laboratory tests will also be ordered, and blood will be drawn to screen for a multitude of items. Your physician will also recommend and discuss diet, nutrition, exercise, prenatal vitamins, and other pertinent precautions. Possible questions one should ask their OB/GYN may be: ▸▸ How much weight should I gain, and at what rate? ▸▸ Is there a nurse line to call if I have further questions? ▸▸ If I experience bleeding or cramping, do I call the office or go to the emergency room? ▸▸ What is considered an emergency? ▸▸ Do I have an increased risk of any specific complications or conditions? ▸▸ Are there any restrictions on sex throughout my pregnancy? ▸▸ Are there any travel restrictions? ▸▸ What kind of precautions should I take to prevent the Zika virus? ▸▸ What about hair dye, sunless tanner, nail polish and massages? ▸▸ Do I need to make changes to my beauty and fitness regime? ▸▸ What is your opinion on a natural childbirth? ▸▸ How will I know if I need a Cesarean? ▸▸ How long past my due date will I go without being induced? These are just a sample of some great questions to ask at your first appointment. If you are unsure about anything, it’s important to always ask. It’s better to be in the know and have the best possible pregnancy. Congratulations! Dr. Jay Cohen specializes in Obstetrics & Gynecology and is affiliated with Plantation General Hospital. He received his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and has been in practice for more than 20 years. All Women’s Healthcare of West Broward is located at 140 SW 84th Avenue, Suite D, Plantation, FL. 33324. ello neighbors! The holiday season is upon us. This is such a special time to get together with family and friends and enjoy the simple pleasures the season brings. The members of the Plantation Fire Department want everyone to have an enjoyable holiday season, so here are a few tips to help keep everyone safe. The holidays are a festive celebration of color and lights. Candles bring a sense of warmth to a home, but they also create a tremendous fire hazard. Candles are one of the leading causes of home fires. Technology has given us LED lights which simulate candlelight very well, are perfectly safe, and use very little energy. Spread them around and enjoy the atmosphere. A holiday tree really brightens a home, but remember to always keep water in a basin that provides 1 quart of water per inch of stem diameter. Most Christmas trees need a stand which holds a gallon of water. A cut tree absorbs much water, and it should be replenished daily. Dry holiday trees are highly combustible and burn very quickly. And, when the needles start to fall, it’s time to dispose of it. In the movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Chevy Chase spread extension cords all over his home which caused a huge explosion. This wasn’t just a movie prank, it could actually happen. Use only single extension cords, ensure they are not frayed or broken, do not run them under carpets, and do not overload circuits. It’s important to use multi-plug boxes with proper circuit breaker protection. Finally, while the holidays bring good cheer and fellowship, a significant segment of our population that may not feel so festive. The holiday season is one of the highest times of the year for suicides, particularly among the elderly. Keep an eye on all your loved ones. If something doesn’t seem right, reach out to them, and get help as soon as possible. No matter what you celebrate, Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa or just the joy of the season, your friends and neighbors at the Plantation Fire Department wish you all a safe, happy, and festive holiday season. We want everyone to enjoy the holiday and make great memories for years to come. Stay safe and happy holidays, E. Laney Stearns Fire Chief

COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT SCANS)

Computed tomography, or CT scan, was introduced more than 40 years ago. They were created to help physicians diagnose medical conditions. Since then, CT scans have rapidly improved in speed and resolution, providing clear, detailed images of internal organs. If a special dye, or contrast, is used to improve clarity of the images, patients may experience a metallic taste in the mouth and a warm flushing of the body. However, this process opens up opportunities to save lives through the early detection of cancer, internal injuries and infections. A CT scan consists of a movable table that glides through an X-ray generating device that circles the body. Cross-sectional images are created of the organ being studied – similar to slices from a loaf of bread. These views are then manipulated on a computer to produce three-dimensional images that are more detailed than conventional X-ray images. The entire scanning process, including exam preparation and administration of the dye, takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. The scan itself may last only a few seconds. Patients can return to normal activities after the scan. The scan is not recommended for women who may be pregnant, because it may affect the growth of the fetus. And for people with certain allergies and medical conditions, such as diabetes.
