Hurricane Season – A Time to be Prepared, Not Scared
I
f you’ve lived in South Florida for long enough, you’ve experienced your share of hurricane warnings, scares, and, unfortunately, storms. Last year, many of us boarded up our homes and prepared for the worst. We were lucky that Hurricane Matthew stayed just off the coast and spared us, but this year could be very different. Hurricane season officially lasts from June 1st until November 30th. According to the most recent forecasts, the 2017 Hurricane season should be about average, with a total of 11 named storms. Hurricane “season”, however, is not what causes billions of dollars of damage and threatens lives; it is that one big storm. There is little to no correlation between the number of severe storms in the Atlantic and the number of storms that reach landfall. We owe it to ourselves and to our families to make sure we are prepared. The Florida Department of Emergency Management recommends that every family prepare a hurricane kit and have an evacuation plan in place. You can visit www.floridadisaster.org/getaplan to create a personalized plan. It only takes a few minutes and could be the difference between life and death.

Plantation Seniors Soar As They Take Flight in a World War II Era Biplane COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
geless Aviation Dreams Foundation (AADF) flew into Fort Lauderdale in April to honor five residents, ranging in ages of 68-88, who reside at Covenant Village of Florida, a senior living community in Plantation. Each participant was able to take a 15-20 minute flight on a route that passed over Fort Lauderdale, soaring 1,000 feet above the heads of participants’ friends and family. AADF is a non-profit organization dedicated to “giving back to those who have given,” by providing a Dream Flight in a 1940 Boeing Stearman biplane, the same aircraft used to train aviators in the ’30s and ’40s. This is the second year Covenant Village of Florida has coordinated Dream Flights with AADF as a way to honor military veterans living at the retirement community. A U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Korean War, Dick Holtsclaw, 85, was the first to take flight. He stayed on to watch as others took turns making memories. Ron Day, a U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Gulf War, never stopped smiling, from take-off to landing. Nor did Marjorie Carlson, whose love for flying enticed her to take flight. “You have to try everything once!” she said. Gloria Ayot-Cross was another resident honored with a Dream Flight. This
eager senior climbed into the cockpit of the bright blue and yellow biplane dressed in her late husband’s bomber jacket. Ayot-Cross is a U.S. Army veteran, but the Dream Flight, she said, was in honor of her late husband, Phillip Cross, who flew combat missions during the Vietnam War. Other Dream Flyers from Covenant Village of Florida included Don Bradley, who served four years in the U.S. Navy aboard the Battleship Missouri and Don Bush, a U.S. Navy veteran who said learning to fly had been on his bucket list for some time. While he didn’t get to fly the plane himself, he, along with the others, said the experience was one they wouldn’t forget anytime soon. “When we land, every one of them has a smile on their face and a spring in their step,” said Darryl Fisher, Founder and President of AADF. “Something about that fresh air and the roar of the engine energizes them. It’s an honor to hear their stories and to share this experience with them.” “Dream Flights are becoming a tradition we look forward to each year,” said Executive Director Doug Fennema. “More than 70 military veterans live at our community; AADF gives us another opportunity for us to say thank you and show appreciation for the sacrifices these men and women have made for our country.”
GFWC Plantation’s Woman’s Club Celebrated Their 43rd Annual Woman of the Year Luncheon BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
n early April, ten women were recognized by the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club, Inc. for their outstanding efforts over the past year. The anticipated luncheon, cochaired by Barbara Graveson and Eirene Stansbury, was held at the Jacaranda Country Club in Plantation. “A Tribute to Women of Achievement” was the theme at the 43rd annual luncheon. The women nominated were selected by their respective clubs. Dr. Helen Ackerman, President of the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club, welcomed everyone to the event before Gloria Merritt, the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club Master of Ceremonies read the accomplishments of each winner. Volunteers demonstrated their dedication to the community through a variety of projects including arts, education, fundraising, beautification projects, preservation of local heritage, and support of their club’s goals and accomplishments. City Council President Pete Tingom presented each honoree with a ‘Key to the City’ charm. Complimentary from the GFWC Plantation Woman’s club, Eirene Stansbury presented a pearl drop necklace; Kim and Chris Zimmerman presented a framed Certificate of Achievement; Gloria Merritt presented a copy of their club biography and each woman took home a tulip centerpiece. Escorts assisting the women on and off the stage were former Council members Ralph Merritt and Chris Zimmerman. More than 140 honorees, club members, families and friends attended the event. Also attending were City Council President Pete Tingom, President Pro Tem Lynn Stoner, who gave the invocation, Council members, Jerry Fadgen and Mark Hyatt. Unable to attend were Mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic and Council member, Ron Jacobs. GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club, Inc., has been serving the community since 1949. The club meets on the second Tuesday of each month (except June, July, August) at Deicke Auditorium, 5701 Cypress Road at 10:00am. Plantation Property Will Undergo a Major Transformation COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
any long-time Plantation residents are always wondering about the area on the northwest corner of University Drive and Broward Blvd. The prime real estate property has been sitting vacant for years after the mall closed. After much anticipation, no one has to wonder anymore. Encore Capital Management will be remaking the city of Plantation’s former Fashion Mall into a mixed-use retail, residential, office and hotel destination. Recently, the developer revealed that the new name of the property will be Plantation Walk. The $350 million transformation will be unique to the South Florida economy. The project, which received its first city approvals in December 2016, will be one of the largest residential-retail-office projects in Broward County. Located on University Drive just north of Broward Boulevard, Plantation Walk will become a downtown-style, live, work and play destination. “The name Plantation Walk describes what this will be – a walkable, enjoyable hotspot unique to Plantation and South Florida,” said Arthur Falcone, CEO and Managing Principal of Encore Capital Management, whose affiliate acquired the property in 2015. “This is a game-changer for the city and region. Once people arrive, whether to work, shop, or live, they’ll have little reason to leave.” “After sitting vacant for well over a decade, Plantation Walk will bring new life to the property and the city. The mixed-use project will create jobs, inject capital, and elevate the city’s tax base for years to come,” said Plantation Mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic.
“We are thrilled with the proposed redevelopment of the Fashion Mall property. It is long overdue and one of the most eagerly anticipated projects in the City’s history,” Bendekovic added. “Plantation is one of the few cities in Broward County that has shown consistent, year-over-year increases in property values, and this will help increase our tax base and boost our economy even further. The jobs the project will bring to the city, both short-term and long, will have far-reaching effects upon other businesses in the area, further enhancing their bottom line as well.” In all, plans for the 32-acre property include 700 luxury rental apartments under Encore’s “The Rise” apartment brand and 200,000 square feet of unique shops and distinctive restaurants. An existing 160,000-square-foot Class A office building is undergoing renovations and will likely welcome its first tenants by December 2017. The standing parking garage as well as the west façade of the 263-room, fullservice Sheraton Hotel are also undergoing renovations. The hotel will remain open during remodeling. Winding throughout the property will be pedestrianfriendly outdoor seating, walkways, and green spaces creating a vibrant downtown-style destination. Plantation Walk enjoys an enviable location just 10 miles from Fort Lauderdale and 30 miles from downtown Miami with easy access to Florida’s Turnpike, I-595 and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

DDF is forever dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, and providing education and support internationally to patients, families, and caregivers at the helm of its founder and “Super Survivor” Debbie Zelman. Guests enjoyed a cocktail hour, silent and live auctions, dinner, awards, dancing, and a photo booth. Master of Ceremonies Lisa Petrillo, Entertainment and Lifestyle Reporter for WFOR, CBS4 Miami, led guests through an incredible evening of entertainment and fun. David Kubiliun, Esq. of Greenspoon Marder and Stephen Greenberger of Broward County Sheriff’s Office co-chaired the event. “I am always so inspired by all of the incredible people I meet who are involved with DDF, so it was my pleasure to co-chair this event for the fifth year,” said David Kubiliun, DDF Board Member. “I’m proud to be a part of Debbie’s Dream Foundation. It’s such an honor to co-chair this event and I’m really looking forward to next year,” added Greenberger, also a DDF Board Member. Event sponsors included Title Sponsor Lilly Oncology; Diamond Sponsors Boston Biomedical and Sheridan Healthcare, an Envision Company; Emerald Sponsors Greenspoon Marder, Merck & Co., Inc., Ross and Liz Tannenbaum, and
Debbie Zelman and Andrew Guttman; and Ruby Sponsors Memorial Hospital West Medical Staff and Laura and Judd Zebersky. This year’s award recipients were Greenspoon Marder; Willard Shepard of NBC 6; Susie Bond of Brick America; Donald Zelman, MD; David Ilson, MD, Ph.D. of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; and Brittany Gendler of Western High School. “I am so excited to have celebrated the 8th anniversary of Debbie’s Dream which also coincides with my 9th ‘cancerversary’ with so many loyal supporters,” said Debbie Zelman, President and Founder of DDF. “The money we raise at our signature Dream Makers Gala directly impacts stomach cancer patients by raising awareness and funds for research, support, education, and advocacy. For a disease that receives the least amount of federal funding per cancer death, the funds raised will make a tremendous impact, and we appreciate all of the support we have gotten from the community.” To learn more about Debbie’s Dream Foundation (DDF), please visit www.DebbiesDream.org.
The Plantation Fire Department Donates Hot Commodities BY BEVERLY PERKINS
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requires fire departments replace protective firefighting gear after 10 years, regardless of how much or how little it was used. However, adherence to the NFPA is voluntary, and many don’t adhere to the standards as strictly as the Plantation Fire Department does. Firefighters from Germany, Japan, England, and South America have visited Plantation to learn how a large American volunteer department operates. But recently, when Brigadier Commander Jorge Rios from Arequipo, Peru stopped by for a visit he got more than just a lesson. Once Chief Stearns learned that their organization has much difficulty obtaining equipment he immediately arranged for a large quantity of used Plantation gear to be transferred to the volunteer fire
T
he Plantation Fire Department has a long history of helping other fire departments in need, locally and internationally, and has become a frequent stop for volunteer firefighters from around the world touring South Florida. About 5 years ago, the Plantation Fire Department learned through the Florida Firefighter’s Association of several rural fire departments across the Florida panhandle that were using old, torn, and patched together firefighting gear. “That’s incredibly dangerous,” said Fire Chief Laney Stearns. “Not only are those people risking their lives as volunteer firefighters, but they are doing it with inadequate protection.” As a result, Plantation donated about 100 sets of firefighting gear for distribution throughout those departments. According to Stearns, many rural departments depend solely on public donations to operate. They are not supported by public taxes. Often times the members share gear, repair their outdated fire trucks themselves, or patch equipment together just to keep things working.

brigade in South America. “There’s an old adage about one man’s trash being another man’s treasure,” said Stearns. “Over the years we have heard so many stories of other departments both here and in other countries that just get by with whatever they can. We don’t always appreciate how fortunate we are.” Plantation’s Logistics team was able to organize and collect 35 sets of workable gear, including coats, pants, helmets, and boots. The lot also included dozens of Nomex hoods. After completed required Customs paperwork, the gear was boxed up and prepared for shipping. The department is currently in the process of collecting more aged gear and equipment to make another donation. “Whether it’s Peru, the Panhandle, or somewhere else in need, if we can help out our brothers and sisters, we are going to do that,” said Stearns. “Anytime we can help another department in need, we will be there. To be able to help a small department on an international scale is tremendously gratifying.”

Native coastal tribes first smoked salmon on an open fire over 1,000 years ago. Today, the signature smoked salmon from SeaBear is done in the traditional Northwest style, using premier hand-filleted wild Sockeye salmon.
Covenant Retirement Communities is a ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
Wild Sockeye Copper River Salmon has a rich, red color and moist robust flavor. Each salmon fillet is vacuum-sealed in our famous Gold Seal pouch, then gently cooked in its own juices —this preserves the salmon naturally, so no refrigeration is required until you’re ready to serve.

Local Girl Scout is One Smart Cookie BY BEVERLY PERKINS
CAN DO KID
P
lantation Girl Scout Troop 10442 is heading to Savannah, Georgia this summer to the home of Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Lowe. The anticipated trip is the result from their outstanding cookie earnings. At the helm of their sales is four-time top cookie seller, Amanda Kopelman. Once again she claimed the number one spot for the fourth year in a row. This Cadette with Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida came in this year with a total sale of 4,603 boxes. Over her four-year top cookie selling streak, she has sold a total of 19,807 boxes. Amanda, a student at NSU University School in Davie, says her goal every year is to learn the valuable business skills that come along with the cookie sale program. “I don’t set a specific number, I just try to sell as many as I can. My mom doesn’t tell me the final number until the end so I just keep going.” It’s not easy being a four-time top seller, but this smart cookie has a plan each year to continue her record of staying on top. She also advises other ambitious scouts to do their best, to smile, and to always try to go past their goal, and then apply the same philosophy to everything they do in life. “I email companies asking if they’d like to put in an order, or if they’d like to donate cookies to Feeding South Florida, Boys & Girls Club, or to the Cookies for
the Military program,” says Amanda. Amanda is in her eighth year as a Girl Scout. She started in kindergarten as a Daisy. There’s plenty about Girls Scouts that she loves, including the mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place. “My favorite part about Girl Scouts is helping others,” adds Amanda. “It makes you feel good that you’re giving to people who need help and not taking. I love community service.” “More than any other organization in our community, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida empowers girls ages 5 to 17 with vision and voice—girls who command their future, engage their communities and inspire others,” says Katie Chwalik, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida Public Relations & Brand Specialist. Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success. Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida serves more than 10,000 girls in Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee Counties. To explore opportunities to join, volunteer, or partner with Girl Scouts, call 561-427-0177 or visit www.gssef.org.

avid Greenberger, CFO of SCG & Associates, has had a lifelong commitment to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County. Over the last 28 years, Greenberger, a Plantation resident, has been a Big Brother three times, spearheaded fundraising efforts for multiple events, including Taste of Fort Lauderdale, Bowl for Kids’ Sake and Swing for Kids’ Sake Golf Tournament, served for 16 years on the Big Brothers Big Sisters’ board of directors, including as board chair, and has made ongoing financial contributions both personally and through his company. Additionally, he was named a “Points of Light” award winner in 2006 for his outstanding volunteer efforts and had the opportunity to meet President George W. Bush. Greenberger was recently recognized again for his dedication and efforts as a “Champion of Children” at the “I Want My Déjà Vu” ball. More than 500 guests attended the over-the-top ‘80s themed event and raised $306,450 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Big Brothers Big Sisters has a proven program to match adult mentors with children in need of a role model to help them navigate through the challenges of growing up. Greenberger first became a Big Brother 28 years ago, and is still involved on a regular basis with two of his Little Brothers. Mentors make a huge difference in a mentee’s life. Guidance, love and support show these youngsters that they are not alone. “I wanted to become a Big Brother because my big brothers were a great role model to me. I wanted to do the same for someone who didn’t have a big brother,” stated Greenberger. “Not having children of my own, it gave me a much greater respect and appreciation for my parents and all that they instilled in me. Organization leaders spoke to the need for additional funding and volunteer mentors and gave special recognition to outstanding members in the community who have gone above and beyond to support the nonprofit. “So many others do as much or more, but I am deeply honored to be named a Champion of Children for my involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County,” added Greenberger. “I believe that everyone should give back for all that we are given in life.”

South Plantation Students Go Above and Beyond to Create a New Club
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
O
ne of the hottest, and trendiest gadgets wanted by most teens and adults alike is a drone. The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is easily available, affordable, and offers positive career opportunities for those interested in learning about them. The new technological advances have South Plantation Paladins so excited that a group of students formed their own club. The Revolutionary Racing Drone Team was founded by Morgan Anderson and Robert McNiven, and has generated an enthusiastic response from plenty of others with a similar passion for working on drones and flying them. The club recently participated in a few local events including the Broward Drone League competition which was hosted at South Plantation High School. “I love to race drones, said Anderson. “The drones that we use in races are more difficult to fly. It takes a lot of skill to fly them well. It is easier to fly the drones that we use for aerial photography.” McNiven added, “I love working with drones. You get to work with technology that is constantly changing. I am getting a lot of practical experience with this club and learning how to repair drones.” The competitions such as the one held by the Broward Drone League involve racing drones around obstacle courses. Members of the team are attending vari-
ous area competitions and getting experience building newer and more elaborate drones together. They are also working on receiving the most current safety certifications, following the latest technology developments, and developing their drone flying skills. “We are learning how to build our own drones, said team leader Matthew Ross. “It is fun to race the drones. It is like being in the cockpit of an airplane.” Many of the drone team members are taking a college level course known as the Principals of Aeronautical Science taught by Danny Aguerre, an adjunct professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He teaches the course at South Plantation High School in addition to his full-time job as an air traffic controller. “Right now we are studying how airplanes are powered and how they fly,” said Aguerre. “There are a lot of good opportunities for young people in aviation. There is shortage of pilots and aviation professionals.” Careers in demand now are drone pilots who excel at aerial photography. Real estate developers need drones to photograph properties. Farmers also need drones to view their crops. The students and the drone team are enjoying the opportunity to work with technology and are eager for a future in aviation.

programs for those who have been touched by cancer. Firewall students from Western High School and Indian Ridge Middle School sorted through 19,367 lbs. of food which provided 16,139 meals for hungry families with Feeding South Florida. Students from Pompano Beach Middle School fed the homeless, packaged meals, and distributed clothes with Hope South Florida, a nonprofit that provides services to the homeless and hurting individuals and families. “It was an absolute honor and delight to serve alongside students in the Firewall program. The positive influence that Firewall is having in the lives of the students is life-changing. These students will certainly stay in school, graduate high school and move on to become successful servant leaders,” said JoAnne Daudt, Firewall Centers’ Board Member and founder and Estate Planning Attorney of JoAnne Larson Daudt, P.A. Once the service projects were completed, all of the students and volunteers gathered at Snyder Park for a celebration that included lunch, music, and sports competitions.

F
irewall Centers held its fourth annual Serve-A-Thon presented by SunTrust Bank, where over 400 Firewall students, their mentors, and volunteers engaged in six meaningful service projects throughout Broward County. Bair Middle and Plantation High were two of the many schools able to participate in the program. Serve-A-Thon is a countywide day of service during which Firewall Centers partner with local nonprofits to teach Firewall students, who come from poverty and difficult circumstances, the value of serving and impacting the community. A group from Bair Middle School cleaned and restored Snyder Park in Fort Lauderdale by removing over 500 pounds of invasive species in the gardens, painting, and cleaning leaves and trash. Crystal Lake Middle School and Lauderhill 6-12 School helped restore the dunes and provide habitats for local animals at the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea beach by planting over 5,000 sea-oats with the Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA) through Hands On Broward. Firewall students from Plantation High School sorted 3000 pounds of mixed electronics at ARC Tech, which provides job opportunities for young adult clients with autism and other developmental disabilities. Finally, Blanche Ely High School cleaned and organized Gilda’s Club South Florida, a community center that offers free

Shoulder Injuries Treated with Arthroscopy Heal Faster with Less Pain New surgical techniques and better pain management enable easier recovery
Vani Sabesan, MD Orthopaedic Surgeon
Remember Operation, an electronic board game in which one wayward movement causes other body parts to spasm and a loud buzzer to sound?
Just like in the board game, an injured rotator cuff can wreak havoc with other body parts – and every day activities like writing and eating – because it’s the rotator cuff that allows us to lift and rotate the arm. The rotator cuff is composed of four muscles plus attached tendons and other tissue in the shoulder. It holds the arm in the joint and helps attach the humerus (long bone in the upper arm) to the elbow, neck and torso. Rotator cuff tendons can tear from age, overuse, traumatic injury, or a fall. When it is injured, even reaching for a book can be painful, and a tennis match or golf outing would be nearly impossible. Understandably, shoulder injuries used to be among the most dreaded by weekend warriors and professional athletes alike. In fact, a rotator cuff injury was often a career-ending incident in sports. “Shoulder patients can experience much quicker recovery and much less pain using
the arthroscopic techniques developed in recent years,” said Vani Sabesan, MD, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in the upper extremities. “Today, my patients return to their preferred activities quickly.”
“Prior to arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair required months of post-operative rehabilitation and many patients avoided the surgery,” said Dr. Sabesan. “Using arthroscopy, we can help our patients return to a fuller life without constant pain.”
Instead of a large incision circumventing the shoulder, Dr. Sabesan uses an arthroscope, a pencil-sized instrument with a tiny camera at the tip, to examine and repair the tissues in the joint. Recovery is quicker, and less painful when compared to an open procedure.
Arthroscopy can treat other ailments including shoulder instability or dislocation, torn biceps tendon, bone spur, inflammation or damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis, a torn or damaged cartilage ring (labrum) or ligaments, shoulder impingement syndrome, and arthritis of the collarbone. Surgeons also use arthroscopes to treat knees, hips, ankles, elbows and wrists.
Using arthroscopy also minimizes swelling, and allows patients to begin their postoperative rehabilitation sooner. In the last few years, other innovations have made the recovery process easier, including surgical improvements and better post-operative pain management. According to Dr. Sabesan, who is a team physician for the Florida Panthers, sutures today use new materials that do not require intra-operative knots. Overall, the procedures are less abrasive to the tissue. New, long-acting pain medications used following surgery last for 72 to 96 hours. Often patients need little or no pain medication after their initial recovery due to the new techniques.
A painful shoulder condition or injury can impede writing, eating, dressing, hair brushing, and other activities of daily living. With newer techniques and appropriate rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery can fully restore movement in the shoulder. Consult with a board-certified subspecialty orthopaedic surgeon to see if you are a candidate for arthroscopic surgery. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Sabesan, call 877.287.2963. Contraception Counseling BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
ASK THE EXPERT
O
ne of the most important contributions to women’s healthcare has been the availability of effective, safe, and affordable contraception. Fortunately, there are many forms of birth control available on the market today. Studies, research, and testing have shown that effective birth control is not only possible, but necessary to prevent much of poverty and unplanned families. Although, there are an array of contraceptive options available in the United States, unplanned pregnancies continue to occur even in today’s modern age. Many of the birth control practices today are much safer than those used in the past, and designed to protect a patient’s health and well-being, as well as reduce the risk of an unplanned pregnancy. These methods may be invasive or noninvasive. The number one factor to consider is whether you want birth control to be a permanent change or a temporary one. Besides abstinence, these methods range from taking a pill to using a prophylactic, a diaphragm or an intrauterine device (IUD). Many women also opt for a tubal litigation sterilization surgery, which is the most permanent choice with a 100% success rate. Newer developments are also to be considered. For example, the NuvaRing is easy to use like a tampon. It releases a steady amount of hormones into the body, which results in a 91-99% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy. Another option is a skin patch which also delivers a high dose of hormones into the body to lower the risk of pregnancy, and can be equally effective.

JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. Medical Director However, the decision on which type to use is a personal preference, but should be discussed with your doctor. Your doctor will discuss the many variables which need to be taken in account when choosing which is right for the patient. These include lifestyle, past medical history, side effects, ease of use, cost, risks, and how it will affect the patient’s overall health. Certain health problems will reduce the options. For example, if a patient smokes, is overweight, prone to blood clots, or breastfeeding, hormonal methods will not be good options. Those with latex allergies or prone to infections will definitely not be able to use barrier methods. It’s important to remember that all birth control methods have some failure rate, some obviously higher than others. It’s also important to remember that what may work well for one individual may not work well for another. The choice is an individual one. Beat the Summer Heat! BY THOMAS DIBERNARDO, SUNRISE FIRE CHIEF
MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
N
ews flash: it’s HOT outside! Luckily, Sunrise Fire-Rescue has some advice to help you beat the heat. Heat-related illnesses pose a serious threat. Small children, older adults, and pets are especially vulnerable, but anyone can be overcome by the heat if unprepared. Take basic precautions to prevent dehydration, heat-stroke and sunburn: ▸▸ Never leave a child, pet, or vulnerable adult unattended inside a parked vehicle, where temperatures can increase by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. Visit www.broward.org/love for more information. ▸▸ Avoid strenuous outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. – when it’s hottest outside. ▸▸ Drink plenty of water throughout the day. ▸▸ Avoid beverages with alcohol or caffeine, which are dehydrating. ▸▸ Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, as well as physical barriers such as a hat and sunglasses. Many people will be seeking an oasis at the pool or at the beach. Remember that water-safety is everyone’s responsibility. Always provide dedicated adult supervision wherever children may have access to water - including lakes, canals, fountains, tubs, and buckets. Add multiple layers of protection: swimming lessons, door alarms, pool fencing, and CPR lessons. Free and discounted swim lesson information – plus a wealth of other water-safety resources - are available at www.watersmartbroward.org.

Residents know that the hot season here in South Florida is also the wet season, with thunderstorms passing through almost daily. Florida is the lightning capital of the country. Don’t risk being struck – “when thunder roars, go indoors”. If you can see lightning or hear thunder, immediately seek shelter inside a building or vehicle. Stay away from large trees and open bodies of water. Once indoors, avoid corded phones, computers, sinks, showers, and windows. A few of the storms that emerge are likely to be large and powerful; Hurricane Season starts June 1st. Do not wait to prepare until the first major storm is named and you find yourself in its trajectory. Now is the time to review your plan with every member of your household, gather your supplies, and safeguard your home. A list of recommended supplies is available for you to review on Sunrise Fire-Rescue’s Emergency Management and Hurricane Preparedness page. Standing water left after the rain makes in ideal breeding ground for mosquitos, increasing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, such as Zika. Saint is a beautiful 3-year-old German Shepard and Labrador mix. His favorite person is his human Dad, but he prefers his human mom in the morning. His favorite toy is no doubt a squeaky one. He loves soothing belly rubs and soft pillows. However, he dislikes loud noises. His favorite pastime is being chased by his canine brother Spanky. He was last seen sleeping on a stack of pillows.

T
he long anticipated fun-filled summer months are nearing! Whether you’re barbecuing, partying or merely soaking in the gorgeous Florida sun, here are a collection of tips for keeping your pets safe during summer. What Factors Increase My Pets Risk During Summer? The Florida summer heat can be brutal for all of us, our animals included. Several factors that increase your pet’s risk of overheating, heat stroke, include: ▸ High – Dark fur ambient – Heart disease temperature and humidity – Heavy undercoat ▸ Confinement and poor ventilation ▸ Examples of abnormal breathing ▸ Physical features: disorders: – Increased age – Brachycephalic syndrome – Seizures – Tracheal collapse – Obesity – Laryngeal paralysis What Do I Do If I Think My Pet Is Experiencing Heat Stroke? If you think that your dog or cat is experiencing heat stroke, seek veterinary care IMMEDIATELY. We must rely on first indicators of heat stroke, which can include: ▸▸ Panting ▸▸ I ncreased body temperature ▸▸ Discolored gums Begin the cool down process while ▸▸ Disorientation on your way to your vet: ▸▸ Ataxia (drunken gait) ▸▸ Apply room temperature water ▸▸ Collapse ▸▸ Direct fans onto them ▸▸ Vomiting and/or diarrhea ▸▸ Provide free access to water ▸▸ Seizures The treatment of heat stroke can be prolonged, expensive and heat stroke can be fatal. Be proactive and try to avoid heat stroke by keeping your pet indoors, only allow them outside for short periods at a time and allow free access to fresh water at all times. If you cannot provide an appropriate environment for your pet during your travel or in the summer, consider boarding as a safe alternative. What Should I Consider When Boarding My Pet? Sometimes you simply cannot bring your four-legged friends with you and during those times boarding is a great solution. At Lakeside Animal Hospital, we provide a clean and friendly animal boarding facility that is maintained by trained kennel staff and overseen by veterinarians. Here are some boarding amenities to keep in mind at Lakeside Animal Hospital: ▸▸ Veterinarians available to tend ▸▸ Fully air-conditioned and to your pet’s medical needs heated facilities ▸▸ Spacious, comfortable and ▸▸ Multiple daily leash walks clean enclosures along our beautiful lake ▸▸ Separate feline and canine ▸▸ 24-hour surveillance cameras boarding areas For the safety and health of all of our patients, every boarder must be currently vaccinated. If your pet is not currently vaccinated, no need to worry because this is a service that our on-site veterinarians can provide upon entrance to our boarding facility. Complimentary evaluation is performed for the identification of internal and external parasites for every pet at the time of their arrival. If positively identified, we offer client education and in hospital treatment of parasites by one of our veterinary professionals. We understand that leaving your beloved family member in the care of another can be very stressful and we strive to make you and your pet feel at ease. Lakeside Animal Hospital, “Where we know they’re not just pets… they are family.” Please contact the office at 954-4748808 to schedule a new puppy visit or annual wellness check-up for your dog or cat.
