Plantation Woman’s Club Hosts Annual Antique Show By Julie Levin

f you’re an antique lover, or just looking for
a great way to spend a weekend day, make plans to check out one of Plantation’s longest running yearly events. The 29th annual Antique Show, presented by the Plantation Woman’s Club, will be held February 18 and 19 at Volunteer Park, and organizers say the event is not to be missed.”It’s going to be very eclectic and exciting, with something for everyone,” said Martha Gregory, the show’s chairperson. Colleen Hendrix is the co-chair of the event. Plantation High Proud of its Reality Show Contestants By Julie Levin
W
hen the dust settles, and its most famous
graduate has a chance to catch her breath, Plantation High School wants to throw a big bash. In the spotlight, of course, will be 2010 graduate Melanie Amaro and current Plantation High baseball coach Albert Destrade, both of whom found reality show success in recent months. “We are very proud of both of them,” said Susan Bruining, the principal of the school which is located at 6901 N.W. 16th Street. As most of America knows by now, the 19-year old Amaro became the first winner of “The X Factor” in December, beating out thousands of other contestants in the Fox Network talent competition. Along Plantation High Plantation High Baseball Coach, and Survivor finalist, Albert Destrade. with the title comes a $5 million recording contract and the chance to 2010 Graduate Melanie Amaro, the star in a Pepsi Cola commercial during the February 5th Super Bowl, winner of the X Factor. Plantation Encourages Residents to “Go Green” By Julie Levin

Find New Treasures & Crafts at Annual Festival By Julie Levin

ne of the city’s most loved arts events is returning early in
March. The 4th Annual Festival of Treasures will once again be setting up shop at Volunteer Park March 3 and 4. Lead organizer Barbara Clair Kettler says you never know what you’ll uncover at the event. “It is a handmade craft, hobbyist, handmade jewelry event,” said Kettler, a Beautification co-Chairwoman of the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club and the founder of the event. The festival will include vendors selling everything from arts and crafts, to handmade jewelry, collectibles, quilts and bags, pottery, knit and crochet items, needlepoint,

tie-dyed clothing, scarves, baby blankets, afghans and shawls, cell phone charms and much more. The vendors will be set-up both indoors and outdoors so everyone will get to spend some time in the park. “You are going to find a lot of one-of-a- kind things at affordable prices,” said Kettler, who is co-chairing the event with Kathy Thiel. As it always has, proceeds from the festival are going to be used to help support many of the beautification projects the club runs, including the planting of trees and the Arbor Day event at city schools, where the students get to see a tree being planted and get to take home seedling of their own to grow. The festival originally began as a way to stop residents from dumping unwanted items in empty lots as part of the club’s “unpollute” plan for the city. Once a year, the club gave residents the opportunity to bring unwanted pots and pans, dishes and other items to a central location, where they could be sold in garage sale fashion. When the city started its bulk pick-up program, the drop-off was no longer needed and it evolved into more of a craft show.
More than 50 vendors will be on hand offering a variety of handmade crafts.

Pro se divorce mediation can be an effective way of reaching a settlement to all issues, including timesharing and child support, property distribution and alimony. Then the parties themselves take the documents to the courthouse for fling. The family law clerk will assign a final hearing date before a judge, and the parties will appear before the judge who will incorporate the mediated martial settlement agreement into the final judgment. The case is then completed and the parties are divorced. The attorney’s fees and costs involved are usually much less that what the parties would pay in a normal divorce case because the parties share the fee. Plantation Resident Helps Lead Effort to “Repair the World” by julie levin

elping to merge more than 200 volunteers into a cohesive
work force is no easy feat, but Anita Platt of Plantation says if it’s for a good cause, she’s on board. That’s why she helped co-chair a recent event that helped give a facelift to the Ann Storck Center in Fort Lauderdale. “I enjoy being involved in helping the community,” said Platt. “I’ve always been involved in some type of project.” This year, it was co-chairing Tikkun Olam Day for the Jewish Federation of Broward County. Tikkun Olam is the sacred Judaic value which literally means to “repair the world”. While many synagogues often undertake their own individual projects, the Federation initiated a group effort seven years ago to bring local Jewish centers and synagogues together to work on a large-scale Tikkun Olam project. “Being Jewish means being part of a community that stretches from here in Broward County, across the ocean to our spiritual homeland in Israel and around the world – connecting one another through shared values,” said Eric B. Stillman, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Broward County. On December 11, that focus turned to the Ann Storck Center, which enriches the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities through residential, preschool, adult day care training and expressive arts programs. out throughout the campus painting, landscaping, mulching. and organizing donations of food, toiletries, toys and books and creating nearly 3 dozen lap blankets for the residents. More than 200 volunteers showed up, despite grey, rainy skies that threatened to derail some of the projects. “Tikkun Olam Day is a visible, tangible way to help the community. It is truly gratifying to participate in a community-wide endeavor like this.” said Platt, who Volunteers working at Tikkun Olam Day. co-chaired the event with Stanley Leibowitz. For Platt, as with the other volunteers, Tikkun Olam is a labor of love. It was her 5th year chairing the event, after first becoming involved as a community relations chairperson through Ramat Shalom, the Plantation Synagogue her family belongs to. Platt says even though the physical work is over for now, planning a Tikkun Olam project is a year-round effort that really gets rolling in the summertime. Still, Platt says helping to make a difference is well worth the sacrifice. “It is gratifying to see the results of the work you do and know that you are doing something to better the lives of those being served by that particular agency,” she said. Plantation Teen Sets World Record By Julie Levin
P
lantation has a world record holder in its midst! 16-year old Zach
Hutelin has made his way into the record books by smashing the record for the longest manual on a mountain bike. Recently verified by the Guinness Book of World Records, Hutelin is already celebrating his world record. “It’s going to be cool to be in the book,” said the American Heritage School tenth grader. Hutelin made his record breaking ride December 4 at Markham Park in Sunrise. Inspired by the MTV show “Nitro Circus” which features extreme sports challenges, Hutelin practiced the manual, which is a wheelie without pedaling, for two months before making the attempt. “I thought it was a record I could beat,” he said. In front of friends, family and witnesses, Hutelin made 12 passes down a strip of road by the model airplane field before setting the record at 686.25 feet. He more than doubled previous record of 334 feet which had been set in 2008. To do a manual, the rider tries to pick up as much speed as possible before reaching the start line, where he lifts the front wheel and tries to go as far as possible before losing his balance. “Your speed is what carries you,” said Hutelin. In order to validate the attempt, his family brought out a squad of witnesses including Sunrise Police officers, and members of the Broward County Chapter of the Florida Surveying & Mapping Society. Hutelin spends a lot of time training on the mountain bike trails at Markham Park so he felt strongly about going for the record there. He also volunteers there once a month to help maintain the trails. Hutelin started riding BMX bikes when he was 10 years old and competes throughout the year in the mountain bike division. He takes after father John Hutelin, who was a professional biker and introduced his son to the sport years ago. John was among those particularly impressed by his son’s feat. “It takes incredible balance, especially since the record is two football fields. That’s a long time to be balancing,” he said.

Reasons Why You Need Uninsured Motorist Coverage By Howard Citron

here are many reasons why you need Uninsured
Motorist (UM) Coverage, whether your vehicle is a car, truck or motorcycle: ▸▸ More than 50% of drivers on Florida roads have little or minimal insurance. ▸▸ Many Florida drivers have no auto insurance at all. ▸▸ With UM coverage, your own insurance company may pay for bodily injuries you or your passengers suffer when the other driver is at fault and has: ▸▸ no insurance ▸▸ too little insurance to cover all your damages. ▸▸ You are the victim of a hit-and-run accident. ▸▸ Although UM coverage is not mandatory in Florida, it is a relatively inexpensive safeguard. ▸▸ In Florida, your Personal Injury Protection (PIP), or no-fault, benefits carry only a $10,000 limit. So there may be instances when your no-fault benefits will not cover a loss in full. Most people do not realize how many drivers on the road in South Florida either drive with the minimum amount of coverage required by the law or without any insurance at all. Under Florida law, the only coverage which an individual must carry is property damage coverage and personal injury protection. This insurance coverage does not pay for the victim’s medical expenses, lost wages, or injuries. What I have come to learn is that many individuals do not understand or realize the importance of their personal automobile insurance coverage, and do not carry uninsured motorist coverage, which protects individuals and their families from uninsured motorists on the roadway. As an attorney, my practice involves a great deal of automobile accident claims and litigation. I receive at least one call a week where an individual is the victim of an automobile accident, and the person who negligently caused the accident does not have insurance coverage to pay for any of the victim’s medical bills or injuries. Unfortunately I am forced to decline many of these cases, because there is no liability insurance available to pay for their damages. The most important coverage which an individual in South Florida can carry in their automobile insurance policy is uninsured motorist coverage. The way uninsured motorist coverage works is that if you are the victim of an automobile accident, and an uninsured or underinsured driver causes the collision, you are then able to make a claim against your own insurance policy to provide coverage for medical bills and/or future pain and suffering. This can be very important specifically for individuals who are forced to miss time from work, or sustain a serious injury which may alter their ability to continue to work and engage in their regular activities. As a practicing attorney in South Florida, it is my suggestion to all drivers to pay a little extra money for their automobile insurance coverage to purchase uninsured motorist coverage. Plantation General Hospital Delivers Top Quality Maternity Care By Julie Levin
W
hether it’s the first addition to the family, or the fourth, having a baby is one of
life’s most exciting and memorable experiences. At Plantation General Hospital (PGH), the doctors and staff in the Maternity Services Department are dedicated to providing the most caring and comfortable childbirth experience possible. In addition to a highly skilled medical team, the latest health technology and a lot of experience (PGH delivers almost 3,000 babies annually), the hospital also offers a “home-like” feel in their newly renovated maternity and labor & delivery units. “We focus on family-centered care. Family and siblings are welcome to be present at the delivery, if that is what the parents desire,” says Sharon Scales, R.N., the Director of Labor and Delivery. From the moment a mom knows she is expecting, families will find everything they need at PGH. The hospital offers a full spectrum of prenatal testing, labs, ultrasounds, maternity education classes and a lactation center with certified lactation consultants available seven days a week. Once the big day finally arrives, there are nine private labor and delivery rooms, an OB emergency room, OB operating rooms and a Perinatal ICU for patients with high risk pregnancy or pregnancy complications. In-house neonatologists are also available around-the-clock for any compromised infants or preterm deliveries. There is also 24-hour inhouse anesthesia if a patient should desire an epidural or other anesthesia needs. All labor and delivery, prenatal and recovery rooms were recently renovated for the latest in comfort, and to create as much of a “home away from home” feel as possible. There are new hardwood floors, chair rails, decor and furniture for the comfort of the entire family. There are also new state-of-the-art beds that convert into many different positions to help with any discomfort during labor. The postpartum unit also has a new look, and offers eight private rooms, two suites and 18 semi-private rooms. All of the rooms offer the same new beds, flat screen TV’s, hardwood floors and comfortable chairs for the patient and visitors. Room service/restaurant style menus are available so patients can order food at a time that is convenient to them. Parents can be reassured in knowing that if their baby requires any sort of specialized care, PGH offers one of the top Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in the country. ing more than 60 countries and cultures on its campus, the American Heritage School recently threw a celebration of its diversity. “We do this to not only honor our past and where we are from, but to celebrate our present,” said Ileana Delgado, the Spanish teacher who helped organize the event. For a third year, the lower school students at the school, located at 12200 W.Broward Boulevard, enjoyed a Multi-Cultural Day on campus. It began with a stirring parade of flags representing more than 40 countries. Set for February 14, the “Saints 500” is patterned after the world-renowned Daytona 500, with just a few small changes. “The children make their own incredible cars that they can stand in and race,” said Jane Nicklas, the principal of the school which has been part of the community since the 1960’s. Students design, build, and decorate their cars out of materials as simple as cardboard boxes and plates. modify them as extravagantly as they want.” The “Saints 500” was put together by several of the school’s teachers who are huge NASCAR fans. They try to give the race as much of an authentic feel as possible. They set up “pits” for each grade where the students put the finishing touches on their cars. They open the event just like they do at a traditional NASCAR ceremony, with the singing of the national anthem, a prayer, and letting all the participants take a lap around the track. Students in each grade climb into their cars waiting in the pits and then assemble at the starting line, waiting for the green flag to be dropped. When they are not on the track, they will also have a chance to explore some unique, real-life vehicles, thanks to school families and supporters from the community. Some of the vehicles that have been on display in the past have included, go-carts, a Model T Ford, a Pontiac GTO, a Mazda R-X7, a 1973 Camaro, a 1961 Impala, an airboat and the first ever street car touted to have broken 250mph in the standing mile. They’ve also had the chance to take part in a demonstration using an air gun to remove a tire’s lug nuts. Nicklas says the best part of their race is that there are plenty of winners, not just the driver that takes the checkered flag.”It allows for our children to be creative and spend time with their family. It taps into a part of our community who are race fans and it is just a lot of fun,” she said. The public is welcome to come and enjoy the races. Understanding Cervical Cancer By Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN Director of Education, Westside regional Medical Center
M
ost cervical cancers begin in the cells lining the cervix.
These cells do not suddenly change into cancer. Instead, the normal cells of the cervix first gradually develop pre-cancerous changes that turn into cancer. These changes can be detected by a Pap test and treated to prevent the development of cancer. Although cervical cancers start from cells with pre-cancerous changes, only some of the women with pre-cancers of the cervix will develop cancer. The change from cervical pre-cancer to cervical cancer usually takes several years, but it can happen in less than a year. For most women, pre-cancerous cells will go away without any treatment. Treating all pre-cancers can prevent almost all true cancers. The early stages of cervical cancer may be completely asymptomatic. Vaginal bleeding, contact bleeding, or sometimes a vaginal mass may indicate the presence of malignancy. Also, moderate pain during sexual intercourse and vaginal discharge are symptoms of cervical cancer. In advanced disease, metastases may be present in the abdomen, lungs or elsewhere. Symptoms of advanced cervical cancer may include: loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, pelvic pain, back pain, leg pain, swollen legs, heavy bleeding from the vagina, bone fractures, and/or (rarely) leakage of urine or feces from the vagina. Human papillomavirus is the cause of 70% of cervical cancer. Women who have many sexual partners, or who have sex with men who had many other partners, have a greater risk. Other risk factors for cervical cancer include: Chlamydia infection, stress and stress-related disorders, dietary factors, hormonal contraception, multiple pregnancies, exposure to the hormonal drug diethylstilbestrol, and family history of cervical cancer. First intercourse and first pregnancy at an early age are also considered risk factors. While the pap smear is an effective screening test, confirmation of the diagnosis of cervical cancer or pre-cancer requires a biopsy of the cervix. This is often done through colposcopy, a magnified visual inspection of the cervix. There are two HPV vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, which reduce the risk of cancerous or precancerous changes of the cervix and perineum by about 93%. HPV vaccines are typically given to women age 9 to 26, as the vaccine is only effective if given before infection occurs. With treatment, 80 to 90% of women with stage I cancer and 50 to 65% of those with stage II cancer are alive 5 years after diagnosis. Only 25 to 35% of women with stage III cancer and 15% or fewer of those with stage IV cancer are alive after 5 years. Evaluation of the patient after therapy is imperative. Recurrent cervical cancer detected at its earliest stages might be successfully treated with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of the three. Here are some answers to some of the most asked questions about orthodontics.

The AAO recommends that your child get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. By this age, orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. Some orthodontic treatment may be easier to correct if they’re found early. Most orthodontic patients begin active treatment between the ages of 9 and 14.
2. Why is treatment so important?
Orthodontic treatment can be successful at almost any age. In fact, about one in every five orthodontic patients today is over age 18. Thanks to today’s smaller, less visible, more comfortable orthodontic appliances, including fixed braces and removable appliances, adults are finding treatment more appealing.
Most orthodontic problems are inherited. Examples of genetic problems are crowding, spacing, protrusion, extra or missing teeth and some jaw growth problems. Other malocclusions are acquired by thumb or finger-sucking, dental disease, accidents, the early or late loss of baby (primary) teeth and other causes.
Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. A bad bite can also cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, difficulty in chewing and/or speaking, and excess stress on supporting bone and gum tissue. Without treatment, many problems become worse and can require additional dental care later in life.

New Tools to Defend Residential Mortgage Foreclosures By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

o far, two large law firms in South Florida have been forced
to close their foreclosure practice as a result of claims and court decisions that these firms provided false information in order to improperly repossess properties on behalf of their lender clients. As a result of the actions by these firms -which led to their demise – new tools have emerged to successfully defend residential mortgage foreclosures.
Forensic Mortgage Audit
A forensic mortgage audit involves an in depth analysis of the loan transaction by a lending compliance expert to uncover violations of federal and state lending laws committed by the original lender. These violations may even be attributable to the current lender under certain circumstances. If presented in a timely manner, the findings from a forensic mortgage audit may be used to aggressively defend a foreclosure action, to offset and reduce the amount owed on the loan obligation, and to even negotiate a worthwhile modified or restructured loan.
Securitization Analysis
During the real estate boom from 2003 to 2007, many lenders sold groups of mortgages in “securitized pools” to investment trusts on Wall Street. These trusts were created as investment tools that allowed lenders and investors to receive highly preferential tax treatment. In order to receive these tax benefits, however, strict regulations had to be followed. A securitization analysis by a qualified and credible firm can reveal whether an individual loan transaction was properly and timely transferred to a valid trust, i.e., was the loan properly “securitized.” If the loan obligation is proven not to have been properly securitized, an investment trust cannot foreclose.
Transfer History Analysis
Even if the loan is not part of an investment trust, many loans have been sold multiple times. Each time a loan was sold, certain legal transfer requirements had to be fulfilled to legalize the transfer and to allow the new transferee to foreclose, if necessary. A transfer history analysis tracks the mortgage from its originator to the true current legal owner and holder of the obligation, and also identifies any breaks in the transfer chain which could prevent the current lender from foreclosing. In some cases, this analysis has uncovered that certain lenders even forged mortgage assignment documents through the use of so-called “robo-signers” to overcome transfer issues, which led to findings of fraud and the cancellation of the mortgage debt altogether. his month is Children’s Dental Health Month,
which makes it a good time to talk about the importance of baby teeth. Human beings are blessed to have two sets of teeth. The first set of teeth are sometimes called “baby teeth”, “milk teeth”, “primary teeth” or deciduous teeth in dental terminology. Primary teeth start erupting at the age of 6 months and all 20 primary teeth are usually present by age of 2 1/2-3 years. The primary teeth are as important as the permanent teeth. They help in chewing, speaking and most importantly maintaining the space for the permanent teeth so they could erupt in right position. There are quite a few misconceptions about the baby teeth. Lot of people think that they are not important since they fall out anyways and we have another set of teeth to follow. That is the reason that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood. The fact is that the primary teeth need the same care as the permanent teeth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child should make the first visit to dentist as soon as the first tooth erupts and no later than one year. At this visit, the dentist will usually do a caries assessment and nutritional counseling. Information on brushing, flossing and fluorides will also be presented at this visit. Also, they would talk about early childhood habits like thumb sucking and inappropriate use of pacifiers and sippy cups.

Decayed primary teeth should be treated as soon as possible because if they are extracted prematurely, the child may lose the space and then the permanent teeth may erupt in wrong position, which could cause misalignment. If the primary tooth needs to be extracted for any reason, the space should be saved using an appliance called space maintainer. Losing baby teeth prematurely may also affect the child’s nutrition as they help the child to chew properly. hether you have something to sell, or are looking for a new treasure for your home or business, chances are you’ll find what you are looking for at the Wilton Theatre Auction Gallery. In business for more than 30 years in Broward County, the Wilton Theatre Auction Gallery offers weekly auctions where customers can find everything from antiques to furniture, china, silver and the occasional one-of-a-kind collectible. Paul and Bonnie Stanford, owners of the Wilton Theatre Auction Gallery, recently answered some commonly asked questions about their business.
What is the Wilton Theatre Auction Gallery?
The Wilton Theatre Auction Gallery is South Florida’s longest running weekly auction house, handling a wide variety of consigned antiques, quality furniture, art, porcelain, china, silver, and jewelry since 1978. We are handle many unusual and unique items - you never know what you are going to find at the auction.

(formerly the 26th Street Playhouse) in Wilton Manors three years ago when the theater became available. We wanted to provide a comfortable and unique setting for our customers and have an environment that would showcase our auction items to the best effect.
What can customers expect when they visit the Wilton Theatre Auction Gallery? Our goal
is to provide an enjoyable environment for people who have never been to auctions - as well as for seasoned bidders. We have comfortable seating for 300 patrons in our uniquely beautiful theater setting, free admission, free parking, complimentary pre-auction wine, and an Auctioneer who speaks clearly (without that fast auction “chant” that people see on TV and can’t understand). We are also open for 2 days prior to each auction for preview so people inspect every item. They can go right up on the stage to look at every item.

Our Consignors often need us to pick up entire estates, including almost everything in the home - we can even auction the home itself. We offer real estate auction services, international internet bidding and auction marketing, estate sales, and appraisal services. People today do not have time to hassle with selling their items on Craigslist or eBay. Our staff can pick up and stage everything from single items to entire households - usually within 24 hours.

in the mail and gathered up all of your personal receipts in order to prepare your tax return. You can certainly elect to file your own taxes. However, because the tax code is so complicated, more than 60% of Americans elect to hire professionals. If you hire a tax preparer, be sure to choose wisely. As a taxpayer, you are legally responsible for what is on your tax return even if it is prepared by someone else. So, it is important to choose carefully when hiring an individual or firm to prepare your return.

Here are a few points to keep in mind when hiring someone else to prepare your tax return: ▸▸ Check the person’s qualifications. Ask if the preparer is affiliated with a professional organization that provides its members with continuing education and resources and holds them to a code of ethics, such as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants or state affiliates such as the Florida Institute of CPAs. ▸▸ Check the preparer’s history. See if the preparer has a questionable history with the Better Business Bureau and look for licensure statues or any disciplinary actions through the state boards of accountancy for CPAs; the state bar associations for attorneys; and the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility for enrolled agents. ▸▸ Find out about any service fees. Avoid preparers who base their fee on a percentage of your refund or those who claim they can obtain larger refunds than other preparers. Also, beware of preparers who say they can get you a bigger return on last year’s taxes. ▸▸ Make sure the tax preparer is accessible. Make certain that you are able to contact the tax preparer after the return has been filed, even after the April due date, in case questions arise. Beware of pop-up tax filers who close up shop after tax season. ▸▸ Provide all records and receipts needed to prepare your return. Most reputable preparers will review your documents and will ask you multiple questions to determine your total income as well as your qualifications for expenses, deductions and other items. ▸▸ Review the entire tax return before signing it. Make sure you understand everything on your tax return and are comfortable with the accuracy of the return before you sign it. Never, ever sign a blank return. The preparer must also give you a copy of the return. ▸▸ Make sure the preparer signs the form and includes their Preparer Tax Identification Number as required by law. Todd R. The club also donated $1,000 recently to Vets Helping Heroes.
