very year around this time we take a deep breath and wonder what happened. Summer is over; the vacation pictures and memories have moved to the back of our minds; the kids are back in school; the Halloween sugar rush has barely worn off and we are in full preparation for Thanksgiving. What? Thanksgiving already? The entire year seems to have gone by in the blink of an eye. Another year of family, friends and togetherness; of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. When we sit down this year with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a delicious turkey feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year and truly enjoy each other. Happy Thanksgiving!

O

ne of the area’s best-known and longest running cultural events returns to Plantation this month. The 45th Annual Art in the Park will be held November 12th and 13th at Liberty Tree Park, hosted by the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club. Organizers say guests can expect two days of beautiful art, entertainment, special events and hands-on art projects especially for children. “The show is neither too big or too small. It is a great way to enjoy fine arts and crafts, do a little shopping, and help support the community as all proceeds go right back into the community,” said Marisa de Matas, the Chairperson for Art in the Park 2011. The theme for this year’s event is “Enriching the Community” and organizers are expecting close to 130 artists who will be displaying their works in ceramics, photography, sculpture, silk embroidery, fine jewelry, painting, batik, leather crafts and more. De Matas says in addition to familiar artists, they have also been working with different art guilds to bring in new and upcoming artists. Their booths are all set-up along the winding, tree-lined paths of Liberty Tree Park, making for a great day outdoors. Art in the Park has a long-standing history in Plantation. It has been a fixture on the art scene for more than four decades, and was postponed only once for Hurricane Wilma in

P

lantation Fire and Police responders now have some new tools to help them protect the city. They came courtesy of Motorola, which is celebrating 40 years in business in Plantation. As a way of saying thanks, the company recently donated a set of radios to the Plantation Fire Department. The Plantation Police SWAT team also received a mobile radio as part of the donation.“We know times are tough and budgets are tight,” said Eric Brooks, Senior Director for Motorola. “This is our way of giving back, just a little.” Motorola, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of communications and twoway radio equipment, has operated its largest manufacturing facility in Plantation near the intersection of University Drive and Sunrise Boulevard for 40 years. The company has worked with both the city’s Fire and Police department on several occasions in a unique public/private partnership. Recently, Motorola engineers went through a mini-fire academy at Plantation. Their goal was to learn what it is like to fight fires and to use their radios in extreme environments. In return, representatives from the Fire Department were invited by Motorola executives to participate in a roundtable discussion help in the design of new radio systems. Other fire departments also took part, including one from Phoenix, Arizona. According to Fire Department Spokesperson Joel Gordon, the result is new Motorola Engineer, Matt Busa (l) demonstrates the new features of a radio to Fire Department Division Chief Laney Stearns. The radio was donated to the Plantation Fire Department by Motorola in honor of their 40 radios that represent the newest in handheld design. Gordon says they are lighter years of manufacturing in the City of Plantation. Motorola Senior Director, Eric Brooks (r) looks on. more functional, waterproof and easier to use. That means firefighters, battling a blaze or helping an accident victim, can put all their attention into the job ahead them While it was the first time Motorola had made such a donation to the city, all involved and not have to worry about equipment trouble. “What they provide to the user, is say it probably won’t be the last the two work together for a common good. “We see the ability to concentrate on doing the work instead of worrying or fussing with the ourselves as a partner with the City of Plantation,” said Brooks. “Anyone can be a radio. And, they promote more fluid inter-operability between agencies.” said Gordon. vendor. We are more than that.”

Consignment Sale in Plantation Offers Bargains for Shoppers at amazing prices and you are helping local families,” Ruiz said.

By Julie Levin

A

fter Juliana Ruiz had her third baby in 2008, she knew her family was complete and she wanted to find a way to reclaim her home, which was packed with toys, clothing and other items her children were rapidly outgrowing. Tapping into her background in marketing, she began looking for an alternative to the traditional reselling venues, like garage sales, eBay and Craigslist. What followed was the creation of “Lolliposh”, a series of seasonal consignment sales that provide a new and economical option for families. “Lolliposh is a community event that brings together hundreds of families and offers them the opportunity to sell their children’s outgrown items, and also find new items at an amazing price,” said Ruiz, the Founder and Owner of Lolliposh. The next Lolliposh Seasonal Sale will be held in Plantation November 18 & 19 in the Levin Gymnasium at the Soref Jewish Community Center. As many as 1200 people are expected to turn out for the sale, which offers the opportunity to buy and sell brand new and gently used, clothing, toys, furniture and accessories for babies and children of all ages. Ruiz says consignors make up to 75% of the prices they set, while buyers can save anywhere from 50-90% on the thousands of items up for sale. The sales are held only two or three times a year, and Ruiz says they have grown in popularity for a reason. “It’s an indicator of the economy. People are struggling to make ends meet. They want to be able to get money back, and save money on new items,” she said. Ruiz insists the clothes she takes in be either nearly brand new or very gently used. She organizes the merchandise like shoppers would find in department store. Toys are in one area, supplies in another, while the clothing is organized by gender and hung neatly on racks. Consigners set the price, prepare them with an online inventory system, and drop them off 1 to 2 days before the sale. It’s a safe way to get rid of items that are no longer needed, while giving bargain hunters a chance to find some new gems for their family. “You really never know what you’re going to find. It is one of a kind items

The next Lolliposh sale is open to the public and will be held Friday November 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Levin Gymnasium at the Soref Jewish Community Center, located at 6501 W. Sunrise Boulevard in Plantation.

Lolliposh offers clothing, toys, furniture and accessories for babies and children.

immediately knew he wanted to host it in Plantation, where he served as a Youth Administrator for the Plantation Athletic League and coached his sons in baseball for more than 12 years. “I grew up coaching my kids on the fields. I thought it would be a great place for a run,” he said. In addition to the 5k Run/Walk, the event featured give-aways, information displays and talks from medical specialists. Families and friends were encouraged to assemble teams and support their loved ones fighting against Sarcoma, or to honor those who lost their life to the disease. “The teams of family and friends that come together to support us are the backbone of this event,” says Mandell. Sarcoma is a rare cancer that appears in a variety of tissue structures, including nerves, muscles, joints and bone, collectively referred to as the body’s connective tissue. Tumors are often hidden deep in the body, making it difficult for an early diagnosis. Worse, the disease receives little attention or funding, as most research dollars are earmarked for study of the most common forms of cancer. Mandell says through events like the 5k Run/ Walk, they are hoping to change that. “We are learning more about this devastating cancer every day, with increased awareness and research breakthroughs and new treatments are right around the corner,” he said.

P

lantation was once again the site of an annual event to battle a rare form of cancer. The 5K Run/Walk for a Cure to benefit the Sarcoma Foundation of America took place October 23 in Plantation’s Central Park. Organizers were expecting a record-breaking crowd. “We are hoping to raise anywhere from $75,000 - $100,000 this year for the cause,” said race director and Plantation resident Mike Mandell. Since its inception four years ago, the Run/Walk has raised enough money to fund three research grants to find a cure for Sarcoma, a rare and particularly challenging form of cancer. Mandell found out seven years ago just how debilitating it could be. After having a cancerous spot removed from his nose, it returned and Mandell would later learn he had Angiosarcoma The news sent him and his family on a search for specialists and answers, both of which they found, were in rare supply. But Mandell was lucky. After chemotherapy, radiation and surgery at the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center, he is now a seven year survivor. But his fight moved him to action, and he joined the board of the Sarcoma Foundation of America. The 5k Run/ Walk followed soon after and Mandell

amuel Alexander’s father says his son has had a song in his heart and a knack for performing almost since the time he could talk. “From the time he was three, he was singing “It’s a Hard-Knock Life” from Annie. He’s always loved it,” said Michael Cohen, Samuel’s Dad. Fast forward 8 years later, and the now 11-year old Samuel hasn’t lost his love of entertaining. The sixth grader at North Broward Preparatory School recently represented the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau in a “Sing-Off” at the Hard Rock Cafe in Bayside. Though the youngest in the group, he sang “Feels Like Tonight” by rocker Chris Daughtry, performing in front of an estimated 350 people. The contest pitted performers from seven other local tourism and chamber groups in a fundraiser for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. It was just the latest performance by Samuel, who not only sings, but plays the piano, and acts as well. He says the love of the stage is something that simply transforms him. “It’s my passion. I am usually quiet, but when you put a microphone in front of my mouth, I am completely different,” he said. Samuel’s resume is as mixed as his love of music. He likes classical and jazz music, as well as rock and contemporary, and says his favorite performer is Bon Jovi. His skills recently won him a third trip as a performer at the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce’s “Jazz in the Hall” event September 15, where he sang and played piano for close to 300 people. “The house band changes every year, but they keep inviting Sam,” said his father Michael. One of his more recent highlights, an on-stage opportunity to perform at BB Kings Jazz & Blues Club in Palm Beach. He has also performed at Plantation’s “Winter Wonderland” and “Tinsel Town” events, as well as on stage for the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre in productions of “Sound Wave/Glee” and “My Son Pinocchio”.

He was also elected to sing the Star Spangled Banner at Plantation’s Central Park Elementary School 5th Grade graduation ceremonies last May and has twice won Broward County’s “Reflections” contest for songwriting. At the age of 11, Samuel says he is just getting started and has no doubt where he hopes his music takes him in the future. “I want to be a rock star,” he said.

Aggressive Driving – A Problem for Police and South Florida Residents By Howard Citron

N

o one is safe when drivers act recklessly and aggressively on Florida highways. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), aggressive driving is a factor in 56% of fatal car crashes nationwide. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies weaving, tailgating, distracted driving, unsafe lane changing and speeding as primary aggressive driving behaviors. The NHTSA adds that aggressive drivers are more likely to drink and drive. The attitudes of drunk drivers can quickly escalate into episodes of road rage resulting in the potential for bumping other vehicles and even resorting to the use of a firearm from behind the wheel.

Recently, Florida police departments were highlighted by the NHTSA as examples of law enforcement agencies using innovative methods to cut down on the high number of aggressive and reckless driving incidents in their jurisdictions. Police officers could be found on lawn mowers, sitting on park benches or sitting on road construction vehicles watching traffic. They would then call ahead to policemen in squad cars to apprehend reckless drivers. The results were effective and increased the number of aggressive driving prosecutions in our state. The Florida Highway Patrol has continued to take on aggressive drivers in various safety campaigns, including Operation Safe Ride, the Aggressive Driving Crackdown and the Blitz on Aggressive Drivers (BAD). Despite these efforts and other means of educating the public in removing aggressive and reckless drivers from Florida’s roadways, aggressive and dangerous driving remains a major concern. In fact, Miami, Florida was named the Worst Road Rage City in a national survey. Aggressive driving is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious injury and death. According to the NHTSA, one of the best ways to avoid becoming a victim of an aggressive driver is to “put your pride aside” and simply move out of the way if a driver begins to tailgate or is violating the rules of the road. The NHTSA also suggests avoiding eye contact and/or making physical gestures in response to an aggressive driver in an effort to avoid a confrontation. If you find yourself driving in an aggressive manner, you should remain calm, monitor your speed and concentrate on driving safely. If necessary, pull off the road until you calm down. health & wellness Keeping Your Teeth Clean Dr. Felipe Norena

S

uccessful orthodontic treatment-a healthy and beautiful smile- is the result of a team effort among you, your orthodontist and your family dentist. You, as the patient, play a key part. Most importantly, you must keep your teeth clean and maintain good dental hygiene while you are wearing braces. Right now, proper dental care will take a little extra time and effort. But it’s well worth it, and will help you enjoy the best possible results from your orthodontic treatment.

Plaque is the Enemy

Plaque is sticky, colorless film that collects on your teeth. It’s composed of bacteria, food and saliva. If plaque and trapped food are left are left on your teeth and around your braces, they can cause swollen gums, bad breath cavities and permanent mark on your teeth.

When to Clean?

Brush thoroughly after each time you have a meal or a snack. If you can’t brush right away after a meal, be sure to

at least rinse your mouth well with water until you can brush. Carry a travel toothbrush so that you can brush when away from home. At least once every day, brush your teeth and braces thoroughly until they are spotlessly clean, and then floss. This takes a little extra time, so you may want to do it at night before going to bed.

How to Brush?

Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft, rounded bristle toothbrush that is in good condition. Because braces wear out a toothbrush quickly, replace your toothbrush as it shows signs of wear. Brush around all the parts of your braces and every surface of your teeth—fronts, sides and backs. Be sure to brush your tongue and the root of your mouth. A good way to tell if you’re brushing correctly is if your braces look clean and shiny and you can see the edges of the braces clearly. Brush your gums gently and thoroughly. Rinse thoroughly after brushing. Inspect your braces and teeth carefully to make sure they are spotless. Look closely in a well-lighted mirror. This is a good time to check for loose or broken brackets.

If you find a problem, contact the orthodontist’s office to see if it needs to be checked.

How to Floss

Floss every night before you go to bed. When flossing with braces on, it might be necessary to use what is called a floss threader. This reusable tool allows you to get dental floss underneath your archwire easily. Make sure you clean carefully along and under the gumlines. Flossing with braces on may seem like a difficult process, but it’s very important. And as with anything, a little practice will make it go a lot faster. Havana’s Restaurant Opens Second Location

By Julie Levin

Havana's Co-owners Michael Mellion and Edwin Scheer.

I

f you are hungry for authentic Cuban cuisine, infused with tantalizing Latin flavors, make sure you check out the brand new Havana’s Restaurant. A year and a half after opening its doors in Cooper City, Havana’s is now coming to the Plantation/Sunrise area “We serve traditional Cuban cuisine, along with other Latin dishes, in an upscale, family-friendly environment,” said Michael Mellion, who co-owns Havana’s with Edwin Scheer. Located on Nob Hill Road just north of Sunset Strip, Havana’s stretches over 4,500 square feet at its new location. There’s also a 1,000 square foot covered patio for outside dining. Mellion says diners will learn from the first bite that Havana’s is not your typical Cuban restaurant. “There are three things that really set us apart; quality of food, attention to details and our great atmosphere,” he said.. Havana’s combine’s Cuban, Argentinean and Mexican elements to bring diners “the best Latin cuisine on earth”. On the menu, there is a wide array of Cuban favorites, all made on premises from recipes that have been passed down for generations. Their specialties include a whole snapper, marinated and fried to a crispy perfection, or Cherna en Salsa Verde, a fillet of fish topped with Shrimp and a parsley cream sauce. Beef lovers can dig into one of several selections including Churrasco Entrana, a large Argentinean style skirt steak served with house made Chimichurri sauce, or Ropa Vieja, a true Cuban Classic. Chicken dishes include Medio Pollo Deshuesado a la Parilla, (a grilled boneless half chicken), Pechuga do Pollo la Plancha, or Pechuga de Polla al Champinon, (breast of chicken topped with a mushroom sauce). There are also appetizers, like Calamares Fritos or their Sabor Latino, which is heaped with tamales, fried yuca, Argentinean sausage, empanadas, and ham croquettes. They also offer a mix of salads, soups and healthy options for those watching their waistlines. Brown rice is offered along with, steamed broccoli or sautéed fresh spinach. Mellion says their food is as authentic as it comes. “The best compliment we can get is when someone comes in and says their food is as good as or better than their mothers,” Scheer said. Try one of their sweet and satisfying desserts, including the Flan, which is an 80-year old family recipe passed down by Scheer’s grandmother. “She started using that recipe in Cuba when she was 16,” Scheer said. She just passed away last year at 96 years young.

Havana’s offers lunch specials every day that run until 3:30 p.m. Diners can choose from an array of sandwiches, like the Cuban, Media Noche or Pan Con Bistec or one of several entrees, with chicken, beef, pork or seafood. They are all served with rice and beans and a side dish. “Everything we sell in our restaurant, we make from scratch, including desserts” said Mellion. No meal would be complete without one of their house specialties from the bar, including traditional red or white sangria, made with fresh fruit and prepared tableside, or a Cuba Libre or Mojito. Havana’s will offer a full bar at the new location with tropical drink specials. Best of all, Mellion says Havana’s offer great value to its customers. “A family of four can come in and not leave their wallet on the table. Not only that but our portions are so big, most people have lunch for the next day,” he said. Mellion and Scheer opened the original Havana’s 18 months ago in Cooper City. They said many of their customers work nearby, but live further north in and around Plantation and were anxious to see Havana’s come to their neighborhood. Like the Cooper City location, the new Havana’s has an “old Havana feel” with textured walls, corrugated metal, wood, and lots of old Cuban photos, It’s comfortable and family-friendly and even has large screen televisions on the walls showing all types of sporting events. Mellion calls himself a “gringo” but says he is Cuban by osmosis after living in South Florida for more than 40 years. Teaming up with Scheer, a Cuban-American and friend for 16 years, Mellion says they’ve developed an eatery that will keep customers coming back for more, just like in Cooper City. “When they come to Havana’s, they can expect to get the same friendly service, the same quality food, and the same environment in a larger restaurant,” he said. Havana’s also offers delivery, take-out, catering, and a VIP party room to accommodate any type of special occasion. There is also ample parking. Havana’s is located at 10035 Sunset Strip in Sunrise, just across from Doris Italian Market and Bakery in the Nob Hill Place Shopping Center at the corner of Nob Hill Road and Sunset Strip. Phone them at 954-741-9696. They are open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. You can also visit their Cooper City location at 8600 Griffin Road. Phone them at 954-530-1400, or visit them online at www.havanasrestaurants.com.

Vitamins for Autism and Hyperactivity?

ention vitamin treatments for developmental problems and you will get plenty of raised eyebrows and non-believing looks. Well, first, if you think that autism or hyperactivity disorders are basically genetic diseases that can’t be treated, such an intervention will certainly make no sense. Second, since the traditional medical community has spent so little energy or resources understanding nutritional intervention for anyone, especially children, a paucity of information on this topic for neurologically affected children will certainly follow. At present, labels display nutritional information which informs a consumer how much of some nutrient is in a particular product compared to how much of said nutrient it takes to stay well, based on a 2000 calorie diet. Of course, that assumes a healthy adult individual, so the values don’t really pertain to most of my practice, which consists of neurologically affected children.

I have personally cared for many patients from all around the world who have lived in absolutely the most abject circumstances. Even in the most impoverished conditions, or in the most hopeless children’s home, it takes a great deal of deprivation to create changes affecting the central nervous system. It’s called brain-sparing, which refers to the body’s resilience and ability to feed the brain, at the very least. Such youngsters develop symptoms, to be sure, called “Failure To Thrive”. Nutritional intervention and therapies have specific effects on such patients. Here’s what I want parents to understand: Eleven (yeah, right, 11!) Nacho Cheesier Flavored Tortilla Chips provide half-a-meal’s worth of calories, a meal’s worth of fat, and contain over 25 ingredients. MSG is listed in the top half. The ‘food’ contains “artificial colors” including red 30, blue 1, yellow 5″ plus “natural and artificial flavors…” What does that mean? Well, for one, it means more glutamate (non-sodium monosodium glutamate), since the food industry is allowed to label it that way. This nonessential amino acid (and ingredients like it) definitely affects the central nervous system and could play a key role in modern developmental problems. Recently, I observed a hyperactive child go absolutely bonkers in my office. The Mom, who is an intelligent, observant and involved parent, perceived that the problem was that his stimulant medication dose was wearing off. We then had a conversation about what the child ate for breakfast, and it became clear to her that – perhaps – the food may have had just as much to do with his behavioral changes as the medication. Or, at least, by optimizing his nutritional intake (and minimizing the poisons) there wouldn’t be a need to alter the stimulant drug. We don’t even think that the food that we give our children is affecting their behaviors. What the tobacco industry did to poison the population of the 20th century, the mega-conglomerates that feed us are doing now. Tactics such as having professionals tell us that a product is safe or others who use statistics to blind us from the problem, as in “What epidemic?” “Vitamins, Shmitavins” you say? Optimizing nutrients for all children will result in their best growth and development. Please read the labels – not just for “nutritional information” but ingredients, as well. If it contains the word “artificial”, it’s not food. Dr. Udell is a board certified pediatrician and neonatologist who practices Developmental Medicine at The Child Development Center in Weston. school news Mr. Phipps Goes to Washington D.C. By Julie Levin

November 2011 | To Advertise in Plantation Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | www.plantationtowntimes.com

T

here isn’t much that keeps Allan Phipps away from South Plantation High School. It took an invitation from a prestigious science program to finally make it happen. Phipps, a science teacher who oversees the school’s award-winning solar car program, is currently participating in the Albert Einstein Distinguished Teacher Fellowship at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C Though a tremendous opportunity for the Broward County 2011 Teacher of the Year, it means a year-long hiatus for his award-winning Solar Knight Project. For the past several years, the Solar Knight Club has designed and built solar-powered cars. Over the summer, the club took part in the 2011 Hunt-Winston Solar Car Challenge in Texas, the nation’s premier road race featuring alternative-energy powered cars. The Solar Knight III, their third solar powered car, won the most advanced division. “We built a better car to showcase what solar energy can do,” said Alan Phipps, the school’s Environmental Science teacher. Like Phipps, the club members spend countless hours, days off and holidays, building and racing their cars.

But for the next 9 months, Phipps will work in the Foundation’s Math and Science Partnerships and Noyce Scholarship offices. The Noyce Scholarship program provides higher-learning institutions with money to offer scholarships to undergraduate students who are strong in the areas of science, technology, engineering or math (STEM), and interested in becoming teachers. Phipps is editing requests for proposals and will organize and sit on review panels in the spring. He will also organize regional and national conferences, participate in site visits and collect and analyze data on the effectiveness of grant dollars in recruiting students to become teachers. He also served as a volunteer at the Department of Energy Solar Decathlon; a competition that brought 20 university teams from around the world to build solar-powered homes on the National Mall. When Phipps returns, he says he’ll revive the Solar Knights Club and get to work refurbishing the Solar Knight II so they can race cars in two divisions in years to come. “It is just a great example of what public high school students interested in science and engineering can do,” he said. Central Park Elementary Hosts Annual Fun Run By Julie Levin

Third graders Jake Miller and Dilyn Schwartz

t’s not often students at Central Park Elementary get a chance to walk or run around the Plantation school’s car loop. But in honor of their annual Fun Run event, almost anything went October 14. “We dance, we hop, we skip, we limbo or we walk,” said Dee Knabb, the longtime Principal of Central Park Elementary. The school, located at 777 North Nob Hill Road, has been hosting its Fun Run for the past five years. It is the culmination of school’s largest annual fundraiser, which brings in anywhere from $25,000-$30,000. The school sends home a flier, which encourages parents and local businesses to contribute any amount they are comfortable with, from $1 on up. “We like this fundraiser because it doesn’t mean they have to buy wrapping paper or candy that they may not want,” said Knabb. Throughout the day, the school’s 1127 students came outside by grade level, and made their way around the car loop to music provided by a local DJ. The students loved the chance to be out of their classrooms.”I like to run around, so I can get energized,” said Zach Weidler, 6. Along the way, they were also encouraged to do jumping jacks, dance or hop on one foot to keep the walk interesting. Fun for sure, but the kids also realized the health benefits.”I like it because you can get stronger,” said first grader Saige Becker. Afterwards, the DJ led the kids through favorite dances like the “Chicken Dance”. A team of PTA volunteers provided drinks and snacks, and helped run the event. The proceeds from the Fun Run have gone towards keeping the school’s technology up to date in its 60 classrooms. This year, Knabb said they will look into the possibility of purchasing iPads to create an iPad lab. In the past, they have purchased laptops, workstations, LCD projectors and Promethean boards. Knabb says it is a priority for her 70 teachers, and their students. “Technology is always a focus for us, and that always needs updating because technology changes so quickly,” she said.

ports injuries result from acute trauma or repetitive stress associated with athletic activities. About 10 million Americans annually receive medical attention for their sports-related injuries. The highest rate is among children age five to 14 years old. As many as 20% of children who play sports get hurt, and about 25% of their injuries are classified as serious. Injury rates are highest for athletes who participate in contact sports, but the most serious injuries are associated with individual activities. Between one-half and two-thirds of childhood sports injuries occur during practice, or in the course of unorganized athletic activity. Baseball and softball are the leading causes of sports-related facial trauma in the United States, with 68% of these injuries caused by contact with the ball rather than player-player collision or being hit by a swung bat. ▸▸ The most common sports injury is a bruise (contusion). It is caused when blood collects at the site of an injury and discolors the skin. ▸▸ A sprain is a partial or complete tear of a ligament, a strong band of tissue that connects bones to one another and stabilizes joints. ▸▸ A strain is a partial or complete tear of a muscle or tendon. ▸▸ Inflammation of a tendon (tendinitis) and inflammation of one of the fluidfilled sacs that allow tendons to move easily over bones (bursitis) usually result from minor stresses that repeatedly aggravate the same part of the body. These conditions often occur at the same time. ▸▸ Fractures account for 5-6% of all sports injuries. The bones of the arms and legs are most often broken. The bones of the legs and feet are most susceptible to stress fractures, which occur when muscle strains or contractions make bones bend. ▸▸ Shin splints are characterized by soreness and slight swelling of the front, inside, and back of the lower leg, and by sharp pain that develops while exercising and gradually intensifies. Symptoms that persist, intensify, or reduce the athlete’s ability to play without pain should be evaluated by a physician. Prompt diagnosis often can prevent minor injuries from becoming major problems, or causing long-term damage. Playing sports can be very fun, but it can also lead to injuries that can last a lifetime. There are a lot of ways to prevent sports injuries, and most of them require a common sense approach. Always Warm Up - Warming up with exercises help the muscles become flexible, which is important to prevent sports injuries. Wear Protective Gear - Wearing protective gear is an obvious way to prevent sports injuries. Eat a Healthy Diet - Nutrition plays an important role in keeping bones healthy and keeping you mentally healthy during a physical activity. Stop Trying to Be the Hero - When it comes to sports, it is a team that wins or loses, and it is not up to one person to save the day for the team. Do Not Play in Pain or With Injuries – Do not play the game when you are already injured or you are in pain. Pain often times is the body signaling you that something is wrong, and you should not keep playing if you feel pain on any level.

How to Effectively Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

housands of homeowners in our community are 20-50% upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they don’t know or are unsure of their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage and no other payments? Also, once the market turns around, think of all the equity you could build back up years from now?

For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “stripping” the lien, a “cram down” or “strip down.” In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, second mortgages and lines of credit against a principal residence can be eliminated up to the appraised value of the home. Many bankruptcy courts follow a rule that makes a second mortgage or line of credit totally unsecured if the principal amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the fair market value of the personal residence. To qualify, the court will generally require proof that the home is worth less than the amount owed on the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 30% or more, many borrowers could qualify for this option. Tax liens and association liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 reorganization proceedings to the extent that the lien does not attach to equity in the property. More importantly, if your income level qualifies, you will be able to catch up on any past due mortgage payments through affordable installments spread out over 3-5 years. This allows you and your family to stay in your home, and none of your creditors will be able to contact you, harass you with annoying phone calls or proceed with a foreclosure during this bankruptcy protection period. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure, including when is the right time to file for bankruptcy protection, are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online at www.arcialawfirm.com. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation and to receive your FREE DVD. health & wellness The Truth About the hCG Diet Program By Dr. Gary Brandwein

Y

ou’ve probably heard about hCG, but what exactly is it? The hCG diet method was developed by the famous Dr. Simeons and appeared in his work, “Pounds and Inches.” Unlike traditional medical weight loss programs, the hCG diet protocol requires a very low calorie diet with very specific food intake along with the administration of real hCG. hCG is a natural hormone and is usually taken through subcutaneous injection, however other ways of administration are also available including oral drops with vitamin B12. The hCG weight loss program continues to help thousands of individuals shed unwanted pounds and fat at a rate of ½ to 2 pounds per day. The person closely following the hCG weight loss program can anticipate to shed pounds and fat constantly while maintaining their new weight and body frame well after completing the program. hCG raises the body’s rate of metabolism as well as initiating the release of stored body fat by keeping the body out of starvation mode which occurs with most low calorie diets. The stored fat will then be used for energy, resulting in the shedding of unwanted weight and fat in no time at all. When you start a low calorie diet, your body will naturally go into survival or “starvation” mode and hang onto your energy rich fat stores, breaking down your leaner muscle tissue for energy. You’ll become tired, hungry, and irritable. Many people attempting a low calorie diet will give up at this point as the body’s survival mechanism overpowers their will. But the hCG diet protocol enables the body to easily break down fat instead of muscle, eliminating hunger and keeping you comfortable and feeling great. And because the program targets excess fat, and not structural or normal reserves, your

body naturally reshapes as unwanted fat deposits are released. The actual weight loss depends on each person individually. The amount of weight one can shed while on the diet depends on several factors, including your beginning weight, age, gender, which stage of the diet plan you are on, how dedicated you are to the hCG diet program and if you are working out. It is crucial for you to strictly follow your program’s schedule. You can certainly speed up your weight reduction by increasing intake of vegetables, drinking more water and eating only unprocessed foods. The hCG diet protocol is not for everyone. You must be mentally prepared and want to dramatically change your life. But, if you follow the plan you will lose weight fast and maintain your target weight for years after the weight loss program is over. Not only will you appreciate your new look, you will have a different relationship with food and your body, and most importantly you will enjoy a much healthier lifestyle! ask the expert Bullying -- No Longer Just on the Playground By Dr. Iris Silverberg

T

hanks to Facebook, Twitter, Club Penguin, XBOX 360, iPhones and phone cameras, raising kids in today’s society is “just” a bit different than it was a generation ago. Science and technology have paved a new lifestyle for all of us today; with over 223 million U.S. cell phone users over age 13 and 1.56 trillion SMS messages sent over the course of a given year. Our tweens and teens are socially and emotionally developing online. Many would argue that social media and technology have great benefits in terms of education, fostering a community with people who share specialized interests, opening up opportunities and mass communication. On the other hand, some of the more serious concerns are exposing kids to behaviors that are not age appropriate, influencing risky behaviors, cyberbullying, and sexting. When we were growing up, friends were people we went to the movies with, played ball together or were part of our youth groups. Today a “friend” is a name your child clicks on a social media network site. Social skills for us included reading body language and eye contact; whereas today kids must also gauge sarcasm in text messages and deal with relationships with online friends. The question is not whether all this change is good or bad, because technology is here to stay. At issue is how to face these social issues head-on to protect our kids. Now the negative behaviors of bullying and social exclusion are occurring on larger scales and often hidden from parents. With younger kids having cell phones and on social networking sites, cyberbullying victims are getting younger and witnessed by a larger

audience than traditional bullying. Hundreds of “friends” are directly subjected to this abuse and the marks left are permanent. Bullying as defined by expert Dan Olweus encompasses three distinct parts: (1) that the act is intentional; (2) repeated; and (3) with a power differential where one person or group has advantage over the other. It is the repeated nature of bullying that causes anxiety in the victim. Bullying can be physical (fighting or physical threats), verbal (name calling, rumors, or mocking), social (using relationships to harass and gossip) and, now, cyberbullying. Kids that are bullied experience emotional distress with more anxiety, depression, loneliness, unhappiness, sleep disturbance and sadly, for some this ends in suicide. It is unlikely that a child will present to the pediatrician with the main complaint of bullying. Therefore, it is up to the physicians to look for and discuss warning signs including psychosomatic complaints, changes in behavior and interests, use of alcohol and drugs, and changes in academic performance. Unfortunately, with shorter doctor visits, recognizing these signs is more difficult and easier to overlook. Plus, parents have lost the doctor as a valuable resource on these issues due to visit time constraints. U & I Pediatric Wellness is under the medical direction of Iris Silverberg MD, a board certified pediatrician. This practice offers a variety of commonly requested and missing supplements to current pediatrics from one-on-one consultations to education seminars, as well as fitness and nutrition wellness programs. or a third year, West Regional Library in Plantation was transformed into a world of comic book characters and Japanese pop culture.
