Spring is Just Around the Corner

sign of renewal and progress. While this winter season did not bring any significant cold weather periods to South Florida, we were able to watch the news reports of snow and ice storms ravaging our neighbors in the northern states. Even as I am writing this editorial, the Northeast is bracing for yet another snow-loaded blizzard, and not the kind you get at Dairy Queen. While we hardly consider the winter season as beach weather, snowbirds from up north and visitors from around the world flock to Florida to enjoy our mild weather, our sea breezes, our white sandy beaches and everything else the Sunshine State has to offer. With spring break approaching why not spend some time enjoying the splendors of our state with a stay-cation. Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey and friends in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment all night? And where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and go cruising the inter-coastal dining scene -- all on the same boat trip? Only in Florida! Auditions This Month for Annual Talent Show By Julie Levin

t’s not American Idol or

the X-Factor, but it is a chance to make it to the local spotlight. Plans are in the works for this year’s Tinsel Town Cabaret, and the show’s directors are looking for entertainers who want to be a part of it. This month, they are hosting two audition dates for the annual City-wide talent show and are encouraging performers of all ages and talents to come show what they’ve got. “We just look for variety and entertainment,” said Wes Lockard, the Special Events Coordinator for the city. Auditions are set for March 16 and 19 and will be held at the Volunteer Park Community Center. Organizers are looking for anywhere from 18-20 acts who can perform in one of three categories: Music Singer Cameron Wheeler belts out a song (vocal, instrumental or combina- at a previous Tinsel Town Cabaret tion), Dance (tap, jazz, ballet, folk, or interpretative), Theater (dramatic or comic presentation) and an open category for any combination of the three. While the idea is to showcase local talent in Plantation, the auditions are open to entertainers throughout the area. Lockard says it has become so popular they often have to turn away as many as 20-25 audition acts. Even so, he says trying-out is a great way

for performers to gain both exposure and experience, even if they aren’t selected. “It’s a good way for them to get their feet wet and see if it’s really what they want to do,” said Lockard, who directs the show with Jack Takacs. Those selected for the show will get their chance to perform at the Tinsel Town Cabaret, which will be held May 10. Over the years, the event has become a popular family-friendly event where performers are cheered on by the audience, and also have a chance to compete for prizes. Ready for Their Close-up By Julie Levin

very parent thinks their baby is picture perfect, and recently

they had a chance to prove just that. It was all thanks to a photo contest at a local mall that sought out “America’s Most Photogenic Baby.” Katherine Aranda of Weston thought she had the winner with son Anderson Lopez, a gregarious 15-month old toddler.” People always tell me I should take photos of him because he is so friendly,” said Aranda. Anderson was one of just dozens of youngsters, ages infant to five years old, who smiled for the contest January 24-27th at Westfield Broward Mall in Plantation. For a $35 registration fee, parents received a professional modeling photo shoot for the kids, an 8 x 10 photo, plus the chance to pick the photo to be entered in the “America’s Most Photogenic Baby 2013” contest. The winners are picked by a panel of modeling professionals, as well as the public, who also have the chance to donate to the cause with each vote. The local winner, which was selected in late February after being displayed at the mall, moved on to compete against babies from nearly two dozen other cities nationwide. Organizers say past winners from that round have gone on to appear in movies, television,

commercials, magazines, Broadway and even a guest shot on the Oprah Show. Now in its 21st year, the nationwide contest has raised more than 3.5 million dollars nationwide for hospitals affiliated with the Children’s Miracle Network, including $100,000 locally over the years for the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation. “It’s really children helping children,” said Mike Guo, a photographer with the America’s Performing Arts Network. Parents had the option of entering their children in one of four categories; precious, comical, beautiful or fashionable. Buoyed by the bright lights and the attention, Anderson Lopez smiled and clapped through photo after photo. Guo says he loves being behind the lens when the kids go before the camera. “I love photographing kids because their expressions are so genuine,” he said. Take a Private Museum Tour for a “Fantastic Historical Adventure” By Julie Levin

n order to preserve Plantation’s history, the Plantation Historical

Society is offering residents a chance to take a unique peek back into American history. They are hosting a fundraiser, called “A Fantastic Historical Adventure” that will allow guests to tour a private museum in Plantation that highlights important steps in American history. “We had a fundraiser there before and everyone loved it,” said Betty Cobb, spokesperson for the Plantation Historical Society. The fundraiser will be held March 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Guests will be asked to gather at Volunteer Park, located at 12050 W. Sunrise Boulevard, for a shuttle bus ride to the Our Backyard Museum Complex. Once there, they will enjoy tours of the extensive Americana collection, as well as donation opportunities, a silent auction, live auction, wine and hors oeuvres. The fundraiser is being held to complete funding for the Plantation Historical Society’s Everglades Diorama project, which will eventually be housed at the Plantation Historical Museum. According to Cobb, the group has already raised $82,000 of the needed $100,000 to finish the Everglades project, which began in 2006. The diorama will incorporate the changing light and sounds of the treasured natural resource. “It will be a great glimpse of the Everglades, and some of the animals and birds too,” she said. Time-Honored Tradition Helps Introduce New Fire Chief

ire Departments are steeped in tradition, and a change of com-

mand is no exception. In keeping with long-standing tradition, a formal Transfer of Command ceremony was held January 15 to help usher in the command of Laney Stearns as Fire Chief. The longtime firefighter is taking over the post from retiring Fire Chief Joseph Harris. The ceremony, which stands as a symbolic method to turn the responsibilities of command from one leader to another, was held at 550 NW 65thAvenue during the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association’s meeting. More than 100 guests – including members of the City Council, family and friends – turned out for the event. During the ceremony, Mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic officially relieved Chief Harris of his duties, then formally charged Chief Stearns with his new responsibilities. The Chief’s Helmet was then formally presented to Chief Stearns by his son Daniel, a long standing member of the Department’s Honor Guard. The new post is the culmination of years of experience for Chief Ellison Laney Stearns, Honor Guard Captain, Wil Bacon carries forward the retiring Fire Chief Joe Harris’ helmet for presentation during the Transfer of Command Ceremony held during the Plantation Fire Association meeting on January 15th.

III. He began his fire service career in 1976 with the Peters Road Volunteer Fire Department and joined the Plantation force in 1981. He also served 22 years with the Lauderhill Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Battalion Chief. Stearns became the Fire Marshall for Plantation in 2001 and was promoted to Executive Officer in 2010. Stearns is married to wife Karen. He has a daughter, Lynn who resides in Port St. Lucie with his grandchild, Ayden, and two sons, Danny, a crew chief with Plantation Fire Department and Dylan who is currently attending school. Plantation High Schools Compete in Televised Academic Quiz Tournament By Julie Levin

The teams, from Plantation High School and South Plantation High School, are among 20 schools that qualified to compete in BECON-TV’s School Duel Tournament. The televised academic quiz show, now in its third year, is designed to reward intellectual talent in South Florida’s high schools. “School Duel provides a unique opportunity for students throughout the tri-county area to showcase their academic knowledge and achievement. We want the South Florida community to recognize the talent within our schools and feel that BECON-TV is the perfect vehicle to do so,” said Dr. Phyllis Schiffer-Simon, the General Manager of BECON-TV. The series features twenty high schools from Broward, MiamiDade and Palm Beach counties, that were narrowed down from a field of more than 50 local high schools. An online test determined which schools would be part of the televised tournament. North Fork Elementary is also a Marine Environmental Science Magnet, so the goal was to provide an “Immersion Day” focused on South Florida’s environment and the restoration of the Everglades. The children were treated to hands-on activities, divided into 13 unique modules. The modules, created by the ER Ambassadors, covered habitat loss, threatened species, geology, flora and fauna, water quality and conservation and more. Many of the modules included small crafts for the students to take home. Outside the building, the North Fork students toured the animal science area and worked in the mobile, interactive classroom known as the “Water Bus.” The day provided different types of learning experiences for all of the students. “Some of our kids go on to fight for the environment, so go on to teach, but almost all of them really enjoy working with the little kids,” said Zealy. Keep an eye out for the ER Ambassadors. They also travel to conservation and environmental-themed events through-out South Florida, hoping to encourage discussion about the Everglades.

Using Chapter 13 to Keep Your Home and Other Properties for Much Less than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

ost consumers are familiar with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in

which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and credit cards and all other unsecured debt are wiped out. However, within a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you will not be able to modify your home loan or any other amounts owed on any investment properties. Your lender even has the right to continue a foreclosure on your home during a Chapter 7 with permission from the court, which is always granted when the homeowner owes more than the home is worth. Many consumers, however, are unaware or unwilling to consider the immediate benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy.

Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures his/her debts. A Chapter 13 debtor has the ability to repay over a period of 3-5 years, all mortgage arrearages, late fees and escrow shortages. All credit card and other unsecured debt can usually be negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, and you may even be eligible to reduce student loan payments, wipe out IRS debt, and even reduce your car payments. However, the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including homeowners’ association liens) from your principal residence. You may also be able to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties, and pay off those properties in as little as just three years. In order to wipe out a second mortgage from your home, the amount owed for the first mortgage must exceed the market value of that home. As it relates to a debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and even reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property down to the property’s market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, and under one affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and stays current on plan payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure of any properties listed in the plan. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the home is worth and have a second mortgage, line of credit or other liens on that property, then you are a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you also have any investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). ▸▸ Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. ▸▸ Occasionally immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles. ▸▸ Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. ▸▸ In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. Most often very simple procedures can be performed to give the child or teenager an arch, allowing them to walk, stand and run correctly and efficiently.

spectacular summer experiences for longer than its campers have been alive. Now celebrating its 17th season, Camp Sagemont continues to evolve to provide new and exciting experiences for its campers. From tiny tots to teens, there is truly something for everyone this summer.

JoAnn Laskin, Executive Director for Camp Sagemont, has been actively involved with the camp since it first opened in 1997. She has seen and helped it grow from a traditional day camp to offering a selection of specialty camp programs from sports to science to the stage. Laskin shares her thoughts on what makes Camp Sagemont so special and what’s in store for campers this Art campers “loved” the exhibit during a field trip to summer. the Young At Art Museum.

We found that our campers have so many diverse interests that we wanted to create a variety of options for them to grow and expand into. What’s new and exciting this summer? This

summer, in addition to our traditional day camp and popular adventure camp, art camp, science camp, sports camp and travel camp, we will be offering zoo camp, voice/performance camp, marine camp and cheer camp. The campers in each camp will benefit from a hands-on approach through the exposure of field trips, presenters and performances.

How does Camp Sagemont come up with these original programs? We have many

brainstorming sessions, we listen to family survey comments and we look at popular trends.

What are some of the things children can look forward to this summer at Camp Sagemont? Each week has a specific theme

which we don’t announce until camp begins. We always introduce new special events to go along with our themes. The campers love our on

We cater to students who want to get enrichment or remediation to help bridge the learning gap that can occur for students over the summer. Some students attend just summer school and others choose to participate in a summer school and day Camp Sagemont’s youngest camp combination. In campers always enjoy showing their team spirit addition, we offer during Color Wars. an English Learning camp for students who are just being introduced to the English language.

Volunteers Honored

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts recently honored 1,300 volunteers, including Plantation resident Alice Prestia. Teen Ambassadors

Students from American Heritage Center for the Arts and Plantation High School are among the 25 students selected for the 2012-13 Broward Center Teen Ambassador Program. The ambassadors include Alyssa Fantel, Spencer Perdeck, Jake Rothstein and Farrah Raquel Sklar from American Heritage Center for the Arts and Bryan Schall from Plantation High School. The program is open to Broward High School students who are interested in the performing arts.

Doogie Palooza

A high-flying Frisbee dog demonstration was just part of the fun at the city’s annual Doogie Palooza, held recently at Happy Trails Dog Park. Thousands of pets and their people turned out for the five-hour event, which included pet-friendly vendors, K-9 demonstrations by the Plantation Police Department and a canine fashion show
