S
chool may be out, but that doesn’t mean we’ve slowed down. Between camp, sports and all the other activities our children are engaged in, plus our own busy lives, there is barely enough time left over to enjoy each other’s company. That’s a shame because summers are meant for spending time together as a family. It’s easy to get caught up in the commotion of everyday life. But instead of just shuffling from one activity to another, why not stop and actually spend time together partaking in one of the great American traditions, the family summer vacation. So let’s turn off the BlackBerry and disconnect the Internet for a few days. Instead, spend some time at the beach, visit the Everglades, read a book together, chat around a campfire, play a board game, see a movie, jump in the pool, or simply chill out in the backyard. Those quality moments together are what we and our kids will remember for years to come. So let’s enjoy the summer and each other! Sincerely,

Don’t Let Pain Rob You From Living A Full Life Having back and leg pain can feel like a crippling condition. You might not be able to play golf, work, or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep. Do You Have Any of the Following? Sharp pains in the back of the leg Lower back pain Herniated/bulging discs Numbness in your arms or legs Shooting hip or thigh pain Muscle spasm, sprains & strains If you’ve suffered from any of these annoying conditions, you may have “Sciatica”. Sciatica is a compression of the sciatic nerve, usually by an L4 or L5 disc herniation. As you know, sciatica can be a very painful problem, even crippling at times. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your back or sciatica hurts and the pain just won’t go away! Fortunately, if you are suffering from any of these problems, they may be relieved or eliminated by non-surgical spinal decompression. Our Patients Say it Best “I had been suffering from constant pain due to a herniated disc for over three years. Tired of having to crawl my way to the shower every morning, and being unable to do a lot of the things I enjoyed, I called Dr. Fishman’s office… [who] recommended spinal decompression therapy. By the end…I felt like a new woman! My back feels stronger, my posture is improved and I can roll over in bed without any pain at all!” –M.C. “I had been suffering with lower back pain for many years. The pain radiated down my leg from time to time and limited me from doing things I enjoyed. Since I have begun spinal decompression therapy with Dr. Fishman, I can now sleep better than I ever have and I am moving virtually pain free.” –D.J. “What’s The Chance This Will Work For Me?” A medical study found patients went from moderate pain to almost no pain with decompression treatments. Those that took pain pills improved less than 5%. – American Society of Anesthesiologists, 2006 Chicago, IL Another study presented at the American Academy of Pain Management in 2007 showed… “Patients reported a mean 88.9% improvement in back pain and better function…No patient required any invasive therapies (e.g. epidural injections, surgery).” These are just two studies out of a dozen done in the last few years, all showing promising results. Here’s the point of all these studies… spinal decompression has a high success rate with helping disc herniations, sciatica, and back pain. This means in just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. The Single Most Important Solution To Your Sciatica and Back Pain It’s time for you to find out if spinal decompression will be your sciatic pain solution. For 14 days only, $47 will get you all the services I normally charge

new patients $250 for! What does this offer include? Everything. Here’s what you’ll get… An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. A complete neuromuscular examination. A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms. A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to becoming pain free. You’ll get to see everything first hand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your pain solution, like it has been for so many other patients. I’ll answer your most probing questions about our pain free spinal evaluation and what it can do for you. The appointment will not take long at all and you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. And the best part about it is... No Dangerous Drugs, No Invasive Procedures, and No Painful Exercises Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, I even catch a few patients sleeping during sessions every once and awhile. You’ll simply lie on your stomach or back, whichever is comfortable, and then a specialized belt is gently put around your waist. We’ll set the machine to focus on your problem area – then the advanced decompression computer system will do the rest. “But I feel fine – as long as I take my pain pills.” There’s a time to use pain medications, BUT not before seeking a natural way to correct the CAUSE of the problem! Spinal decompression just may be the answer that you have been looking for. Ask yourself … after taking all these pain medications and playing the ‘wait and see game’, maybe for years…are you any better off? Call 954-577-6161 anytime between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Special Decompression Evaluation before July 25, 2011. We can get started with your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule. Our office is called Plantation Spine & Sports Rehab and you can find us between Pine Island Road and University Drive on Sunrise Boulevard in the Jacaranda Plaza near Stein-Mart and Publix. I look forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a healthier, more joyful life. Sincerely, Dr. Dean Fishman, Chiropractor P.S. The only real question to ask yourself is this… What Will Your Pain Feel Like 1 Month From Today? One of the biggest myths about pain is that it goes away all by itself, without any treatment. A May 1998 study in the British Medical Journal proved this myth false, showing that 75% of back pain sufferers who do nothing about it will have either pain or disability 12 months later. Let’s face it, if the pain hasn’t gone away by now, it’s not likely to disappear on its own. Life’s too short to live in pain. Call today and soon I’ll be giving you the green light to have fun again.

n the two recent financial market meltdowns (2000 and 2008-9), many Americans who had their life savings invested in retirement plans had no guaranteed options. For those whose retirement assets were invested in Wall Street securities, it was like being trapped inside a falling elevator. Billions of dollars and decades of savings disappeared overnight. Many moved their funds to cash and bank CDs only to experience more disappointment as fixed rates continued to produce poor returns. Once again, Wall Street is trying to regain an image of integrity and trust in an effort to convince consumers that investing in its mutual funds and other high fee portfolios is still the right way to invest. Especially if you are retired or nearing retirement, you must ask yourself, “Invest for what?” When I ask people what their #1 goal should be for their retirement savings, nearly everyone responds, “To get the best rate of return possible.” That answer tells me few people really understand the ultimate goal of investing for retirement. Perhaps it’s because the goal has been misrepresented. Perhaps due to the fact that Wall Street has no solution that will create enough revenue to satisfy its enormous need for profit while creating financial security in retirement for its customer. It has been my experience that Wall Street has caused retirement savers to lose focus on the real goal of retirement savings—a goal that cannot be overstated: Dependable income for life! When it comes to the money you must use to live on for the rest of your life—you simply cannot be distracted by any other concept, method or strategy. Look at your own account statements and reflect on those words. Think for a moment-- how will your retirement investment portfolio accomplish this goal? There’s a good chance there are no provisions whatsoever for dependable and secure lifetime income. In fact, if you are one of the millions of Americans investing in the Wall Street system of retirement, there is a high probability you will never achieve the goal of attaining a reliable stream of lifetime income.
Once you’re retired, it’s all about income.

community news Fire Department Gets Learning Center on Wheels By Julie Levin
T
he GFWC Plantation’s Woman Club made yet another philanthropic donation before heading off on its summer break. At its end of the year luncheon in May, the club showed off the new educational trailer they helped to provide to the Plantation Fire Department. At a cost of an estimated $4,500, the trailer is providing the latest and best fire safety education at community events, schools, and local shopping centers. And it is just the latest community effort spearheaded by the PWC. “We are a fantastic service organization devoted to educational, charitable directions,” said Helen Ackerman, Publicity Chair and a member since 2007 Since its founding in 1949, the GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) Plantation Woman’s Club has grown to more than 200 members, all of whom are passionate about supporting educational activities and community improvements, both in Plantation and around the globe. Their membership is comprised of women from all walks of life; professionals, retirees, mothers, grandmothers and even greatgrandmothers. Each is asked to contribute at least four hours a month to help out with the PWC’s numerous on-going projects. “We are for any woman who wants to be involved with service projects, for Plantation and an even wider range of things,” said Ackerman. The group, now in its 62nd year, promotes several annual events including their 3-day
Antique Show, Bromeliad Show and Murder Mystery Dinners. The proceeds are used to help in a variety of ways, including providing nine, educational, four-year scholarships to Plantation residents attending a Florida public college or university. The club also has a multitude of activities that it supports including the Plantation High School rocket program, South Plantation High School solar car, special education book fairs, deaf and hard-of-hearing “Signing Santas” and music scholarships. Community improvements they have had a hand in include decorative fountains, public information message boards and butterfly gardens throughout Plantation. For the past seven years, The BIKE (Be Intelligent, Kind and Enthusiastic) program has resulted in hundreds of bicycles and helmets being donated to deserving elementary school students in Plantation. Other efforts include the “Binky Patrol” where hand-made comfort blankets are given to traumatized children. GFWCPWC has provided the K-9 dogs for the Plantation Police Department as well as the funds to purchase a thermal imaging unit to help fight crime. The Club also provides phone cards and food packages to service personnel in distant locations. The group is always looking for new members. For more information on membership and the Club, contact President Pat Hinde at 954-661-3830 or pathinde@aol.com.
Class Helps New Moms Dance Away the Baby Weight By Julie Levin
N
ew moms have always had an array of Mommy and Me classes, and Stroller Walking Groups to help them get back in shape after giving birth. But now an innovative new class is promising to get them moving like never before. It’s called “Bolly Baby Fit…Mommy Let’s Twist”, a brand new class now being offered at Plantation’s Central Park. It works off the theory that it’s not always easy for a new mom to find time to exercise, and take care of the baby. Bolly Baby Fit offers both in one 45-minute class that is offered Sunday mornings. With the little ones snuggled safely in slings or baby carriers, new moms dance their way back into shape, and at the same time enjoy socializing with others in the very same situation. The class incorporates movements and music from around the world including Salsa, African, Hawaiian and Bhangra beats, in addition to Bollywood music. All dance moves and exercises are taught by a Bolly Baby Fit instructor certified in pre-natal and post-natal exercise. Rather than perfecting their moves, the focus is always on participants having fun, avoiding the baby blues and rediscovering those “pre-baby” bodies. Bolly Baby Fit was founded by Swati Yadav, a Financial Advisor and Pre/Post Natal Fitness specialist. Dancing from a very young age, Yadav had a chance to travel the world with her family where she fell in love with the different cultures and dances of the world. When her own son was born, she decided it was time to share her passion for dance with others, while still enjoying time with her baby. Bolly Baby Fit is for women of all activity levels. Moms workout at their own pace and are encouraged to take a break to feed, change or soothe their baby when necessary. In addition to being a great bonding experience, the music and dancing provides stimulation and vital brain activity needed for baby’s development. The minimum recommended age for the baby is six weeks. By this age, the baby can be carried comfortably in a sling or baby carrier and mothers are normally ready

The Bolly Baby Fit…Mommy Let’s Twist class is held Sunday mornings from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 in the multi-purpose room at Plantation Central Park, located at 9151 NW 2nd St. For more information, moms can call Central park at 954-452-2510. community news Ophthalmologists Bike To Fight Diabetes By Julie Levin
E
ven at age 69, Dr. Stanley Rous puts in close to 100 miles on his bicycle many weekends to help keep in shape. Recently, he put his love of cycling to good use by taking part in a national effort to fight diabetes. He was one of hundreds of riders to take part in the National Tour De Cure, a series of fundraising cycling events held in 43 states nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Wayne Bizer and Stanley Rous taking part in the Association. The goal of the Tour De National Tour De Cure at CB Smith Park Cure is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by the disease, something Dr. Rous does almost every day as a doctor. “As Ophthalmologist, we deal with many patients that have diabetes, and this disease often impacts vision in a very serious way,” he said. Dr. Rous is a member of the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute, which recently relocated to Plantation. As a sponsor for the local event, which began and ended at CB Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, members of the practice manned a display, where the doctors had the opportunity to provide information for the many participants who have been affected by diabetes, either directly or indirectly. The Tour is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. As an experienced rider, Dr. Rous rode more than 62
miles through South Florida. Joining him on the ride was Dr. Wayne Bizer, also with the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute. “This is a great way to support the community, help battle a disease and to enjoy yourself,” said Dr. Bizer. For Dr. Rous, who had a hip replacement done several years ago, the Tour De Cure was not his first ride for charity. He has taken part in several other rides, including Lance Armstrong’s cycling rides to prevent cancer. He says combining his love of cycling with a good cause is a win-win for everyone. “It is a great feeling when you do something positive for people,” he said. ou are stylish and sophisticated with a unique decorating style. Your paint was custom-mixed to suit your décor. Your drapery and window coverings are custom-made to complement your overall décor. So what about your rugs? Your flooring is a very important layer in decorating so go custom. Beautiful Windows now offers you a 130 Designs in 480 colors all custom created by you on our computers. It is so easy and so much fun. ▸▸ Select one of 130 patterns. ▸▸ Choose your shape and size – rectangle, square, oval, octagon, round, runner or carpet for the room. ▸▸ Choose the colors that enhance your décor – 480 colors in different textures and piles. ▸▸ See it come alive on our computers. Play with it and change it around till you absolutely love it. ▸▸ Order and it’s ready in 4 to 5 weeks. Prices start at just $387 for a 5 ft. x 8 ft. custom rug. Tips on choosing a rug: Use a rug to define or separate areas, such as seating or dining areas, and foyers. ▸▸ Shape: Let the way you group your furniture dictate the shape of your rug. ▸▸ Size: For a room size rug subtract 3 feet from the length and width of the room. Leaving the floor bare at the edges makes it look a little larger. ▸▸ Dining Room: Leave at least 24” of rug from the edge of the table out on all sides. This enables the back legs of the chairs to stay on the rug, when pulled out. Select man-made material or wool (not silk or cotton) for easy clean up and durability. ▸▸ Runners: They should be 4 inches narrower than your hallway and 18 to 24 inches shorter. ▸▸ Layering: Throw a rug over your carpet to accentuate or create more visual interest. ▸▸ Pattern or solid: If you have lots of pattern in your furniture or drapes, I recommend a rug with little or no visible pattern. If the opposite is true, a patterned rug will bring life to the room. ▸▸ Color: Remember your color theory basics when picking a rug. If you want your space to appear larger, choose a lighter color. A darker color will make the room seem more intimate. Bring us a picture of your furniture and we’ll help you select your custom rug. We’ll design your rug right on our computers. community news Dance with Dad! By Julie Levin
D
ads and their daughters have the chance to spend a special evening together this month. On July 15, they are invited to break out their leather jackets, poodle skirts and bobby socks for a night of 50’s fun at the annual Daddy Daughter Dance in Plantation. “It is a great time for dads and daughters to spend some fun, quality time together,” said Wes Lockard, the Special Events Coordinator for the City of Plantation. The dance will be held July 15 at the Volunteer Park Community Center at 12050 W. Sunrise Blvd. The fun begins at 7 p.m. and is for daughters ages 6-12. Each year, the event brings in as many as 50 people, many of them kids and dads from Plantation’s Summer Camp program. Even if they are not in the program, Lockard says there is plenty of room for everyone to come and enjoy a unique night out. “There’s just not very many things that a daddy & daughter can do around town, other than the movies,” he said. The city sets up the room with 50’s style decor, including an inflatable jukebox. Even if guests opt not to come in 50’s style clothes, Dads and daughters will still enjoy an annual event that has been going on in Plantation for at least the past 15 years, and always in July. There is a DJ, dancing, and lots of different contests with prizes like hula hoops, limbo, twists, bubble gum blowing and more. “It is just great night of fun,” said Lockard. The city also hosts its annual Mother-Son Hoedown each August to give moms and their sons a special night out. But in July, it’s all about dads and daughters getting to let loose at the sock hop. “I think it brings dad & daughter a little closer,” said Lockard.

The Daddy Daughter Dance will be held Friday, July 15 at Volunteer Park, located at 12050 W. Sunrise Boulevard. Tickets are $20 per couple (1 Daddy, 1 Daughter) and $8 for each extra daughter. Dance tickets will be available July 5 – July 15 at Volunteer Park Community Center, Plantation Central Park, located at 9151 N.W. 2nd Street and at the door the evening of the event. The event starts at 7 p.m.

Plantation to Host USTA Tournament By Julie Levin
T
ennis anyone? The city of Plantation will be hosting a prestigious junior tournament this month, and organizers are urging both fans and nonfans alike to come check it out. “You can see the finest young ladies in the U.S. developing in the tennis world. These are names you will hear down the road,” said Lowell Coffman, the Tennis Pro with the City of Plantation and a member of the Plantation Tennis Tournament Committee that runs the event. The USTA Tournament Girls 14 National Clay Court Championships will be at the Veltri Tennis Center July 17-22. The event is a premier clay court tournament for girls ages 14 and under on the USTA tour. It is one of four major tournaments they play each year, and the only one on clay. Matches will be played throughout the week, with the finals –which normally draw as many as 400 fans – being held on the 22nd. A breakfast will be offered for fans one hour before the match. The tournament brings as many as 100 players, and their families, to Plantation to compete for the Summer Championship. Previous winners have included girls that went on to both high level college programs and the pros, including Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport, Sloane Stephens, who is now on the pro tour, and Melanie Oudin, who made a run to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open this year. Players from Plantation have also competed, including Bianca Sanon who now plays for Columbia and Marlena Hall, who now coaches at Broward College. The Veltri Tennis Center has hosted the event since 1989. The facility came to the attention of the USTA in 1985 after hosting the International Sunshine Cup Tennis Match. When another tennis facility in West Palm Beach chose not to renew its rights to the tournament, Plantation picked it up and has hosted ever since. Later this year, another coup for the Veltri Tennis Center. It will host Orange Bowl Championships, ages 16-18, the number one junior tournament in the world. That tournament is moving from the hard courts on Key Biscayne, where it has

community news A Woman of Valor By Julie Levin
T
he women of Sisterhood and the Parent Teachers Organization (PTO) at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El in Plantation had plenty to celebrate recently as they honored Fern Harr as a “Woman of Valor” at their annual spring luncheon. The temple is celebrating its 36th Anniversary and Harr has been in the forefront of nearly every aspect of the temple’s growth. The event, a successful fundraiser for Sisterhood and the temple school programs, highlighted Harr’s many years of service and devotion to the temple and the temple family she loves. Luncheon Chairperson Amy Segal said once the committee decided the theme of this year’s luncheon would be to honor a “Woman of Valor”, everyone immediately thought of Rabbi Sheldon Harr’s wife, Fern. “Fern does so much for so many people and she does everything with strength and with love,” Segal said. At the luncheon, congregants and friends spoke of Harr’s involvement in the Early Childhood program, the Religious School, Sisterhood and Leadership Development over a span of four decades. “Many people don’t know that Harr taught Judaic Studies and Hebrew School to 3rd and 4th graders for 32 years here,” Segal said. Sisterhood President Mindy Armstrong said Harr is a “Woman of Valor” in every sense of the term as she has guided the woman of the temple with wisdom and kindness since the beginning. “Harr is delighted to give advice to emerging leadership and always shows concern and compassion for everyone in every situation,” Armstrong said. “She is also incredibly welcoming and is known to invite visitors and new members to sit with her at temple services and functions.” Harr said she was truly humbled by the luncheon which honored her in such a special way. “The Sisterhood and PTO really did a lovely job with the entire event,” said Harr. “I was presented with a beautiful engraved crystal plate and all who attended received some of my favorite things including champagne, perfume and dark chocolate. It felt just like Oprah’s favorite things show,” Harr said. “It was also really fun to see

legally speaking Texting and Driving on Florida’s Roadways By Howard Citron
S
ome thirty (30) states have enacted laws that ban text messaging behind the wheel. However, Florida is among a number of states where pulling out your phone to tap out a few characters while driving remains perfectly legal. In fact, Florida has no restrictions on texting even for teenage drivers or for bus drivers carrying passengers. The facts are clear that texting behind the wheel is extremely dangerous. So why is Florida still behind the times? Well, some Florida lawmakers have already been trying to introduce bills aimed at curbing texting while driving in the Florida legislature. One of the major anti-texting bills introduced last year would have made texting while driving a secondary offense, meaning a driver could not be ticketed unless pulled over for some other violation. Here, first time texters would face a non-moving violation and a $30 ticket; a second violation within five (5) years would double the ticket cost and would be considered a moving violation. In many states, drivers can be pulled over for texting as a primary offense, and fines or other penalties are much more severe.
Last year, 2,430 people were killed in motor vehicle collisions in Florida. Although this represents the lowest number of annual fatalities in over three (3) decades, Florida is still one of the most hazardous states for drivers in the nation, coming in third behind California and Texas. Floridians face a heightened risk from texters: the National Occupant Protection Use Survey from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that drivers in southern states were more than twice as likely to be seen operating hand held electronic devices than in any other area of the country. Tragically, most of the deaths caused by texting are easily preventable, and if a texting ban could help lower the number of victims, lawmakers should give it serious consideration. Just because there is no law on the books that currently bans texting while driving in Florida, you are by no means barred from recovering damages in a civil lawsuit from a texting driver. If a driver negligently causes an accident by texting, he/she can be held liable for any resulting property damage, costs of medical treatment, compensation for pain and suffering, and lost wages. Even worse, if a family member was killed by a driver’s careless texting, a wrongful death suit can help survivors recover monetary compensation as well as funeral expenses.

5 Reasons You Should Get a Physical
All Shows, All Rides All Day, One Price!

f you’re like most people, you only visit the doctor when you are sick. You wait until you can’t tolerate that ache anymore, and then you drag yourself in for an appointment. Surprisingly, visiting the doctor when you are healthy is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep yourself that way. Make your healthcare a priority, and take the first step of committing to an annual physical. Believe it or not, it could even save your life.
Why should you get a physical?
they occur to preventing them from occurring at all. Getting a physical exam is your first step towards prevention. If you have high blood pressure, it can be easily monitored and treated with medication, so that you don’t end up with a stroke or heart attack. Similarly with cholesterol, weight issues, anxiety, etc., prevention is the key to a longer, healthier life. 2. Establish baselines. Your doctor can track your health over time to see where and how things are changing. It doesn’t necessarily mean much if your blood pressure is 130/90, but if on your previous visit it was 100/60, that’s suddenly something that needs to examined more thoroughly. 3. Save time and money. The more you are on top of your health, the less time you will have to spend down the road treating diseases and illnesses. That equates to a huge financial savings, too. 4. Let your doctor get to know you. A relationship with your physician based on trust and understanding will only benefit you. 5. Peace of mind. Knowing that you are in good health will reduce your stress, and help you relax and enjoy your life.

History. Your doctor will discuss your complete health history, including any concerns you have, and behaviors you engage in (like smoking, diet/exercise, etc.). Vital Signs/Appearance. Blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature are checked, and your doctor will study your overall general appearance. Heart. Using a stethoscope, your doctor will listen for any heart irregularities. An electrocardiogram (EKG) should also be performed to evaluate any potential blockages or abnormal electrical activity within the heart. Lungs. Your doctor will use a stethoscope to listen for any abnormal sounds in your lungs whose presence might indicate disease. Head and Neck. A thorough examination of your head, eyes, ears, nose, throat, and neck. Abdomen. Your doctor will listen to the sounds in each quadrant of your abdomen, and check all the organs and blood vessels within. Neurological. A check of your mental state, nerves, reflexes, motor and sensory activity, gait and balance. Skin. Your doctor will examine your skin and nails for any obvious external illness, or signs that might indicate internal illness. Laboratory tests. A thorough physical should include a variety of lab tests that will give your doctor a complete snapshot of your overall internal health.

Local Teen Musician Hitting all the Right Notes By Julie Levin
T
he son of a well-known Plantation Ophthamologist is slowly finding his own spotlight; not in medicine, but in the world of music. Jake Miller is making a name for himself as an up and coming hip hop and pop star. “I hope to go as far as my music can take me,” said the 18-year old Miller. So far, it has taken him to the stage in front of live audiences. Recently, he opened for Snoop Dog at Club Cinema in Pompano Beach with a ten-minute set, his first live performance ever. A few weeks later, he opened for Mac Miller at America’s Backyard. “That was really exciting because he is my all-time favorite,” said Miller, who will combine music with his studies at Florida State University in the fall. Miller says he has always loved music, but really started focusing on it in the last two years. He writes all his own music and lyrics, and doesn’t try to lock himself into any one genre. “My music is different because every song I’ve done is kind of different,” he said. “I’ve made a hip hop song, a pop song, a club song and more. I think what I am doing appeals to everybody,” he said. Miller has created a serious buzz with his music in recent months, meeting with record label executives, Jake Miller producers and programmers at local radio stations. Power 96 has featured him as an ‘up and coming’ artist to watch and even gave him some serious airtime lately for his original song “The Top Spot”, which he remixed for the Miami Heat Championship

run. “It kind of relates to my life because I am trying to take this music thing to a new level, but it also related to the Heat trying to win a championship,” Miller said. The song also was played at the Heat road rallies outside the American Airlines Arena. Miller puts his own spin on his rap music by making sure it is all good spirited and uplifting. “All my songs have positive messages,” he said, adding that he get his inspiration from musicians like Justin Timberlake, who not only sings, but acts as well. He writes his music at the home he shares with parents Bruce and Lee Miller and sister Jenny, 15, and then records with professional producers at Insane Sounds in Fort Lauderdale. Fans so far have been loving his songs “On My Way” and “Ridde Me Dat.” “When I hear the instrumental of the song, I get a certain vibe right away as to what the song should be about and the feeling you should get,” he said. Miller was also recently chosen by Samsung as the only “unsigned” artist to represent the southeast market to launch a new campaign for the new Sidekick 4G phone. Miller was the youngest competitor and the only rapper, yet still found a way to win. “It was probably my greatest moment ever,” he said. As the winner, he received $35,000 to spend on his music, and maybe even a commercial down the line. He says it is a thrill he never expected. “All these people I’ve never met all know the words to my songs and they are singing along with the words I wrote. It is a really cool feeling,” he said. For more on Jake Miller, check him out online at www.jakemillermusic.com where you’ll also find links to his music.

In addition, both his parents and several relatives were also educators. “I realized my calling was education, like my parents, aunts and uncles,” Anderson said. Anderson believes in a hands-on, team approach to managing the school. He provides dynamic leadership that energizes his staff and students to do their jobs of teaching and learning. Anderson instituted four, highly functioning Professional Learning Communities (PLC) in the areas of reading, writing, math and science. These PLCs have enabled the school to continually respond to its growing and changing population, which has resulted in the school’s consistent “A” grade. “I have worked hard here at Tropical, but so have so many others. It is a great school and I am fortunate to be the Principal,” he said. Broward’s top assistant principal is Ernie Lozano, from McNab Elementary School in Pompano Beach. Anderson and Lozano both received $1,000 checks from BrightStar Credit Union, an event sponsor.

Protect Against Heat Exhaustion During Hot Summer Months By Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN
H
eat exhaustion, also called heat prostration, is the body’s response to dehydration and an excessive loss of water and salt through perspiration. Heat exhaustion typically occurs after long periods of exposure to heat and not drinking enough liquids. Heat exhaustion occurs when the body becomes overwhelmed by heat and the sweat response stops working properly. Normal body temperature for an adult is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. With heat exhaustion, body temperature is usually between 98.6 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat exhaustion is a feeling of fatigue and illness, including dizziness and nausea. The elderly and very young children are far more susceptible to heat exhaustion because they have a hard time adjusting to high temperatures and weather changes. Other causes of heat exhaustion include illegal drugs and drinking alcohol. Use of illegal drugs may damage your body’s cooling system. Some medical conditions such as malnutrition, diabetes, kidney or thyroid disease, heart failure or liver problems may increase your chance of developing heat exhaustion. Some medications may also increase your chance of developing heat exhaustion such as medicine used for pain, allergies, depression, heart problems or tumors. Obesity can also predispose one to heat exhaustion.

legally speaking Is There Ever A Right Time to Loan Modify? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
I
n previous articles, we have outlined the pitfalls and disadvantages of most residential home loan modifications. Some of these include higher principal balances, the length of time required to complete the loan modification process, the temporary nature of a loan modification, and the high rate of default after a modification. However, there is a very limited set of circumstances under which a loan modification can work in favor of the homeowner.
The Property is the Borrower’s Principal Residence
Most lenders will only consider a loan modification of a borrower’s principal residence. The rationale behind this is that a borrower is more likely to make all payments under a loan modification agreement in their family home, as opposed to an investment property. Indeed, the underlying purpose of the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) enacted in February 2009 was to help homeowners stay in their principal home. If you are struggling to loan modify an investment property or second home, you need to consider other more viable options.
The Borrower Has Positive Equity or At Least Owes What the Property is Worth
As most borrowers are painfully aware, most loan modifications will not include a reduction of the amount you owe your lender, but may actually increase the amount owed. Agreeing to a loan modification with a higher principal balance may place the homeowner so deep in debt that he/she may never “break even” or realize any profit from the sale of the home. For this reason, it is critical that a homeowner have some equity in the property they are seeking a loan modification, or at least owe what the property is worth.
The Mortgage Loan Does Not Contain Elements of Fraud or other Violations of Law
Discovering that a loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law could be critical in obtaining the best possible outcome for any homeowner. However, most loan modification agreements contain a provision where the homeowner releases the lender from liability for any wrongdoing in connection with the loan. A homeowner should never sign a loan modification agreement without at least investigating whether the loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law. In order to rule out the possibility of mortgage fraud, a homeowner should conduct a forensic audit of their home loan. Homeowners should stay away from online sites that sell inexpensive forensic audits, and even from law firms that offer to perform the audit themselves. The Arcia Law Firm has worked with several qualified and professional mortgage auditing firms to whom we refer our clients. If any of these three circumstances do not apply to your current situation, you need to immediately stop the frustrating and time-consuming loan modification process and consider other options. Call us today if you would like an attorney from the Arcia Law Firm to review your case in detail to determine the best course of action. The Arcia Law Firm recently released a consumer DVD entitled “Fight for Your Home,” which is now available for purchase at www.arcialawfirm.com. can do kids Two Weston Dancers Qualify for “World Olympics of Ballet” By Stacey Bomser
H
aylee Levin and Abbey Kay’s summertime activity has kept the Weston teens on their toes, literally. The two elite dancers with the International Ballet Company have been busy training for the Genée International Ballet Competition, one of the most competitive ballet events in the world. The Genée, as it is informally known, is considered the Olympics of ballet. It is the ultimate level of competition for an amateur classical ballet dancer. Typically only 30 to 35 ballerinas from around the world qualify each year. “It’s unheard of that two dancers from Florida, let alone the same ballet company, actually qualify for the Genée,” explains Mary Buttner, director of the International Ballet Company (IBC) and its feeder school, the International Dance Academy. She adds that over the last 90 years, only one other dancer from Florida has qualified to represent the United States at the Genée. In order to qualify for the Genée, dancers must successfully complete a series of rigorous exams administered by the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), and earn Distinction on the final Advanced exam. Buttner says this is quite an accomplishment and she is extremely proud of her dancers. “Of the hundreds of dancers participating at the advanced levels in the various regional qualification examinations, only 17 earned the Distinction grade. Of those, only Abbey and Haylee will be traveling to South Africa in October for the Genée. The opportunity to represent our country at this international event is truly deserved by both.” Haylee and Abbey, both students at Cypress Bay High School, say it is an honor and a privilege to represent IBC and their hometown of Weston at this prestigious dance competition. “We were simply ecstatic when we found out we qualified for the Genée,” says Haylee.

But Abbey admits it is a little intimidating. “To be the only two dancers representing the United States at this high-ranking international competition is simply overwhelming.” The girls have nothing to fear. Each boasts an extensive ballet background, having trained at IBC since they were young; Abbey has been there for eight years and Haylee for ten. “Years of hard work and instruction at one of the best dance schools in the country have led us to this point,” acknowledges Abbey. According to Buttner, both girls have completed three vocational examinations with Distinction and competed in the Youth America Grand Prix with Distinction. In addition, each has had starring roles in stage performances of classic ballets including The Nutcracker. Abbey’s on-stage ballet performances have included the roles of Clara, the Snow Queen, a Sugar Plum Fairy, as well as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Haylee has performed the roles of Clara, the Snow Queen and Dewdrop. Now, with the Genée just months away, the girls are busy preparing for their most challenging part to date. Each trains for several hours each day with IBC Artistic Director Deborah Buttner, who has performed as a Principal and Soloist on professional stages throughout America, London and South Africa. “The Genée consists of two ballet performance variations, which we select from a list provided by the Royal Academy,” explains Buttner. In addition, the dancers need to learn and perform a new, unknown choreography. “Our research gives us an indication as to the type of choreography and the required elements.” All performances will be judged on technique, artistry and musicality. Buttner is confident Haylee and Abbey will do well at the competition. “They are both very dedicated students who have many years of training in a professional environment. The detail-oriented instruction they have received at IBC, both in terms of training and technique, has definitely prepared the girls for this competition.” The girls are excited about their upcoming trip. “Both of our mothers will accompany us to share this special once-in-a-lifetime moment,” notes Haylee. “In addition, Mary and Deborah Buttner will be there with us for support.” Buttner says she, too, is excited to go to the Genée and share this incredible experience with her dancers. “My advice to them is to relax and have fun. Enjoy the experience and soak up all the new impressions.” To Advertise in Plantation Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007

What is the Genée International Ballet Competition? The Genée International Ballet Competition, informally known as “The Genée,” is just a dream for most ballet dancers. It represents the pinnacle of achievement for young people trained in the Royal Academy of Dance program. Classical ballet dancers from 79 countries vie for a chance to compete at this prestigious competition. In order to qualify, dancers must have successfully completed a series of major examinations satisfying the extraordinarily high standards of the Royal Academy of Dance, including earning a Distinction on the final Advanced exam. Typically, only 30 to 35 dancers from around the world qualify each year. Candidates have the incredible opportunity to work with and learn from distinguished dance professionals and world-renowned choreographers during the course of the weeklong event. All are affiliated with the esteemed Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). Headquartered in London, it is one of the world’s most influential dance education and training organizations with over 13,000 members. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, is the Patron of the Royal Academy of Dance. The Genée consists of two ballet performance variations: a classical repertoire and new choreography. Dancers must perform three solos, including a selected 19th century classical repertoire variation and a 20th century variation. Dancers will also learn a new dance while at the event. Competitors are judged on technique, musicality and performance. One of the most exciting and unique elements of the Genée is the Commissioned Choreographer. Each year the RAD Artistic Director commissions a choreographer with a strong link to the RAD, the competition or the host country. This choreographer then chooses two pieces of music and works with the candidates over the ten-day period creating two solos (one for males and one for females). These solos are premiered as part of the competition and are notated using Benesh Movement Notation to ensure that they are saved for both artistic and educational purposes. This year’s Commissioned Choreographer is Kirsten Isenberg. Although born in London, she has ties to Cape Town. Kirsten studied at the University of Cape Town and did an apprenticeship with the Cape Town City Ballet, which she later joined as a permanent member. Kirsten has also performed with the Bovim Ballet. At the end of the year, she will join the cast of Phantom of the Opera. In addition to choreographers, the Genée also assembles a renowned panel of judges. All are Artistic Directors. The panel is chaired by Dame Antoinette Sibley, DBE, who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the competition. The 2011 Genée will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, in October. As a true international competition, the host country changes each year. Previous host cities have included London, Singapore, Hong Kong, Athens and Toronto. The event has never been held in the United States. Participation is paramount for the United States to one day host the event. This year, two Weston teens will participate in the Genée. Haylee Levin and Abbey Kay are both students of the International Ballet Company. It is unheard of for two dancers from one state, let alone one dance school, qualify for this prestigious program.
Abbey Kay and Haylee Levin will represent the International Ballet Company and Weston at the prestigious Genée International Ballet Competition.
Seeking Sponsorships The International Ballet Company has launched a fundraising drive to help defray expenses to compete at the Genée in Cape Town, South Africa, in October. South African Airways has already generously donated the flights for competitors Haylee Levin and Abbey Kay as well as their two IBC coaches. However, additional expenses remain including room, board, tutus, fees and air fare taxes. Corporate sponsorships and in-kind donations are welcome and encouraged, especially by local businesses looking for exposure. IBC is offering different levels of participation with accompanying benefits, including recognition at the 2011 performances of The Nutcracker, with five shows before an audience of 7,000. Gifts will escalate by level including opportunities for premier Gold Circle tickets to the Gala Nutcracker Performance; advertisements in the commemorative program; on-stage floral presentation; and highly-coveted post-show Director’s cocktail party where donors

meet the stars of the show. International Ballet Company, a registered 501(c)3 company, relies on the generosity of exceptional supporters to bring distinction to America’s commitment to the art of ballet on a competitive level. Membership support directly assists IBC in defining the highest level of ballet to its audiences. IBC acknowledges its longtime supporters Greenberg Traurig and Our City Weston for their continued commitment to supporting the arts in our community. To make a donation or become a sponsor, contact Mary Buttner, IBC Director, at (954) 647-4001 or email idaandibc@gmail.com. it’s their business Waist Management Helps Patients Lose Weight the Easy Way By Debby Teich
H
CG Waist Management is helping patients turn their bodies into fat burning machines. They look and feel better by losing weight the fast and easy way. Unlike many traditional diets, the diet is medically supervised, does not require patients to exercise and provides a plan to keep off the weight for the long term. Clients can lose up to 30 pounds in 30 days, without feeling hungry. Bart K. Gershenbaum D.O. and James O’Connor, PA-C, MPH opened the office earlier this year after experiencing the results of the diet first hand. Dr. Gershenbaum worked as an emergency room physician for over 25 years and learned about the diet soon after he had quadruple bypass open heart surgery. “Image is important, but health is everything,” said Dr. Gershenbaum. “The HCG protocol helped me lose 30 pounds in one month with very little effort. I now have more energy and feel great. My cholesterol and triglyceride levels have improved dramatically. My weight has always been difficult to maintain, but since the HCG diet it has stayed off.” O’Connor worked in the emergency room with Dr. Gershenbaum. When he saw the life changing effects of the diet he decided to try it himself. He lost 45 pounds in only two months. “When I saw how quickly I was losing weight, I was motivated to keep going,” said O’Connor. “I feel great, have more energy and sleep better. The diet really works!” The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating to help ensure it is the last diet they will ever need to do. The scientific protocol for the HCG diet was discovered almost 60 years ago by the late Dr A.T.W. Simeons, a British endocrinologist. Clients follow a very specific low calorie diet that is made up
of real food, proteins, fruits and vegetables. They also use a small dose of HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), a natural complex amino-peptide protein found in both men and women that can only be prescribed by a doctor. The HCG helps the body break down its “abnormal” fat storage and sculpts it while they lose weight. Clients keep their desired lean muscle mass, and only lose the unsightly fat. As a result, they lose not only pounds but an equal amount of inches. They are also able to maintain a low calorie diet without suffering headaches, irritability or weakness, which are so commonly seen during most other weight loss diets or programs. Their bodies are satisfied with smaller, healthier portions, and are naturally retrained to maintain a new set point for their weight Many of HCG Waist Management’s patients are also good candidates for Bioidentical Hormone Therapy. “Once men and women reach a certain age, they have hormonal deficiencies that need to be corrected if they want to feel like they did when they were younger,” said Dr. Gershenbaum. “The therapy also protects them from certain medical conditions that are common with aging, including cardiovascular diseases, elevated cholesterol and osteoporosis.” HCG Waist Management is conveniently located in Davie, at 7740 Nova Drive, Suite B-4, just south of I-595 and one block east of University Drive. For information, call 954-634-DIET (3438), visit www.HCGWaistManagement.com or send an email to hcgwaistmanagement@gmail.com.

health & Wellness Gaining Strength a Core Component of Getting Physically Fit By Steve Bowser Co-owner of The Playground Gym/CrossFit Affliction in Davie
I
f your goal is optimal physical competence, then you must consider all the general physical skills; accuracy, balance, agility, power, coordination, speed, flexibility, strength, stamina and cardiovascular/respiratory endurance. It has been our experience at The Playground Gym/CrossFit Affliction that strength should be considered to be at the top of this list. There are different types of strength which would include maximal strength (1 rep max on a lift) or strength endurance (doing maximal reps with a moderately heavy load). Our program is based on General Physical Preparedness (GPP), which is very strength biased. There’s a old Greek tale of a 6th century strongman named Milo who carried a calf on his neck every day until it grew into a bull. This is a example of progressive strength training or, as we call it today, progressive overload. Don’t be ill informed, you can get stronger without gaining muscle hypertrophy. In other words, we are not looking to make women masculine. You can train your central nervous system to fire your intra-muscular coordination and inter-muscular coordination. This will cause all the fibers in your muscle to work together or cause all your muscle groups to work more efficient causing increased strength. This is an example of strength training for an athlete that needs to stay within a certain weight class, such as a fighter or gymnast. Our program can give both women and men incredible looking athletic bodies, whether they are athletes or just want to look good on the beach. Our Strength and Conditioning Program is evidence-based with lots of success stories. The Flanagan High School Baseball team did a 12-week pre-season training program at our facility and later went on to be crowned the 2010 National Champions. A school teacher named Abby walked into our facility and could hardly do a push up, but a year later went on to place 25th at the CrossFit Regionals in Jacksonville. Other clients have lost weight and improved overall health to the point of discontinuing blood pressure and blood sugar medication. Our Program is designed for EVERYONE. You DO NOT need to be an elite athlete to come train at our facility. I get calls on a regular basis telling me that when they see all the fit members in the pictures they get nervous. It is important to remember that most of those members were not that fit when they started. We will even be offering a CrossFit Kids Program for kids ages 6 years of age and up that will teach proper movement and nutrition. It can turn your kids into incredible athletes and build incredible core to extremity strength in a very safe and effective manner. Our coaches hold a large variety of certifications for various training disciplines. The Playground Gym/CrossFit Affliction is located at 10400 State Rd 84 #103 in Davie in the 595 Corp Commerce Center in the rear of the Office Warehouse Complex. health & Wellness Signs the Bite’s Not Quite Right Dr. Felipe Norena
I
t’s not always easy to tell when your child has an orthodontic problem. Even teeth that look straight might be hiding a problem bite. So how can you tell if that is the case? Here are some clues that may indicate the need for orthodontic attention. ▸▸ Early or late loss of baby teeth ▸▸ Difficulty in chewing or biting ▸▸ Breathing through the mouth ▸▸ Thumb-sucking ▸▸ Crowded, misplaced or blocked-out teeth ▸▸ Jaws that are too far forward or back ▸▸ Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth ▸▸ Protruding teeth ▸▸ Upper and lower teeth that don’t meet, or meet in an abnormal way ▸▸ Any unbalanced facial appearance ▸▸ Grinding or clenching of the teeth While orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 9 and 14, some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they are treated early. Not only do wellaligned teeth look good and feel good, they also are important to good dental health. Poorly aligned teeth can lead to dental problems. Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities. They receive an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth. Not everyone needs orthodontic treatment. But if your child does need help, it pays to start treatment when you have the greatest chances for success. Make sure your
child receives an orthodontic check-up no later than the age of 7. Norena Orthodontics is located in the northeast corner of Sunrise Blvd and Nob Hill Road. Drs Felipe and Ana Maria Norena have a combined orthodontic experience of 35 years. Dr. Felipe received his orthodontic degree from Saint Louis University and Dr. Ana Maria graduated from the Orthodontic program at Nova Southeastern University. They are both members of the American Association of Orthodontics. They are open Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call them at 954-474-1600 for an appointment.

Dining Out Mazza Offers Great Mediterranean Food Right in the Neighborhood By Debby Teich
I
t is a Mediterranean tradition for family and friends to get together to share small dishes called ‘Mazzas’ before they indulge in their entrees. At Mazza in Pembroke Pines, guests can experience this tradition and enjoy great food without leaving the neighborhood. The family-friendly is conveniently located at 15749 Pines Blvd., just west of I-75. Faris Bushnaq opened Mazza in 2007 to share his passion for food and dining with others. The restaurant has a warm, relaxing atmosphere and the food is bursting with flavor. The Greek and Lebanese dishes are cooked in olive oil and contain fresh vegetables, an array of exotic spices, meats that are marinated overnight in Mediterranean juices and other high quality ingredients. Many of the recipes have been passed down through the generations. “We want our guests to leave the restaurant feeling happy, satisfied and with smiles on their faces,” said Faris. And they do. Mazza has developed a very loyal clientele. Some of its guests come to try Mediterranean food for the first time and others are connoisseurs. Once they experience the restaurant’s quality food and fun atmosphere, they are eager to return. Guests are not the only ones who praise the restaurant. Mazza is Zagat Rated and has received rave reviews from online critics. It recently won opentable.com’s 2011 Diner’s Choice Awards in three categories: Ft. Lauderdale Neighborhood Gem, Ft. Lauderdale Good for Groups and one of Southeast Florida’s Top Mediterranean Restaurants. Most guests start by ordering an assortment of traditional appetizers to share. This is also a great way to sample the menu. Some of the most popular are the Drunken Halloumi (Cypriot Halloumi cheese that is lightly sautéed in ouzo and olive oil and served with tomatoes in a special Toom garlic sauce); Grilled Octopus (marinated in Mediterranean spices and drizzled with olive oil, garlic and fresh lemon juice) and of course the Hummus (a blend of chick peas, Tahini
sesame paste, fresh lemon juice and garlic), which Mazza may soon begin selling in stores. Mazza also offers 10 different salads. Most are intended as appetizers and include favorites like Tabouleh (chopped parsley, cracked wheat, tomatoes and fresh mint tossed in extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon and pomegranate molasses vinaigrette) and Shaved Pear (field greens, shaved pear, candied walnuts and warm goat cheese tossed in a Poppy Seed dressing). The restaurant offers a large selection of entrees that include traditional Mediterranean dishes, as well as Petit Filet Mignon, Cowboy Steak, Grilled Salmon, Whole Fish, Grilled Chicken, Pasta and more. Many order one of the Signature Kabobs made with seven different types of meats, seafood and vegetable or something from the Rotisserie

(Lamb Gyro, Chicken or Steak Shawarma). Other traditional favorites include the Lamb Chops (perfectly marinated overnight in Mazza’s aromatic seven spice marinade), Grilled Skirt Steak (top grade outside skirt steak marinated in citrus juices and grilled on an open flame) and the Med Burger (handcrafted patty perfectly seasoned, stuffed with goat cheese and topped with roasted tomato and lettuce). Kids can chose from a large selection of items that range in price from $4.95 to $5.95 and include two sides. The serving sizes are generous and many leave with leftovers to enjoy at home. Most, however, still manage to find room for desserts like Ashta (Greek phyllo pastry stuffed with a creamy filling, then topped with orange blossom syrup, rose water and topped with pistachios), Baklava (a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of Greek phyllo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with honey) and the Pistachio Ice Cream (served in a toasted almond basket with stuffed dessert dates). Most guests like to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their meal. The restaurant offers wine by the glass or bottle and sells bottles of wine for only $10, Sun. to Thurs. It also sells a wide variety of beer, including some from Lebanon and Greece. On Fri. and Sat. nights, from 8 to 9 p.m., guests can get a taste of Mediterranean culture as they watch a traditional belly dancing show complete with fire eating. The free show is a treat for all ages. Many of Mazza’s guests want to experience the restaurant’s cuisine at the office or at an event. Mazza offers a Corporate Catering Menu with a variety of options for $12 per person, including Chicken Kabob, Greek Salad and Dessert. The catering menu is very popular with medical offices in the area that recognize that Mediterranean cuisine is considered among the healthiest in the world, since it incorporates olive oil, nuts and seafood. Mazza also has a Party Platter Menu for birthdays, weddings and other special events. It contains all of the items from the regular menu in sizes suitable for parties as small as 6 or as large as several hundred. Mazza offers full catering and can supply everything for the party, including the food, tables, belly dancers and more. Faris appreciates all of the support he gets from his guests and does his part to give back to the community. He participates in school fundraisers and has worked with the Red Cross, Transplant Foundation and many other charities. “We are so grateful to all of the people who dine in our restaurant and we feel it is our responsibility to give back.” Mazza is open Mon. to Thurs, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fri., from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sat., from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.; and Sun., from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. For information, call 954-436-9997 or visit www.mazzarestaurant.com.

it’s their business Cooper City Antique Mall a Rare Find in South Florida By Julie Levin
N
estled next to a gym and specialty grocery store in a Cooper City strip mall sits a treasure trove of rare finds in South Florida. The Cooper City Antique Mall has been in business for close to 20 years, and is recognized as one of the finest and oldest antique malls in Broward County. Owner Claudia Cayne says customers will find a unique array of antiques, to fit any taste or budget.”We are a true antique mall. We cover every aspect of antiques and aren’t limited to just a few things,” said Cayne of Southwest Ranches, who joined founder Dodie Cayne in November of 2010. Located at 9800 Griffin Road, the Cooper City Antique mall is spread out over 10,000 square feet and features the merchandise of close to 50 independent dealers, who offer all types of antiques from all periods. They carry fine quality antiques including furniture and decorative accessories that date back as far as the 18th century. Customers will also find jewelry, glassware, china & porcelain, collectibles, textiles, paintings & prints, lamps & chandeliers, architectural, iron & garden accessories. To ensure authenticity, the vast majority of their inventory are actual antiques (100 years or more) or vintiques which is at least 30 years or more. The store is displayed with in eye catching visual displays that transport you in both time and place. “I think from the moment our customers walk past the glass doors their whole mood changes,” said Cayne. According to Cayne, antiques are the original form of “green” and serve in direct contrast to many of the products created in today’s disposable society.
The original form of "green"; a bench made of wood recycled from an old barn and industrial parts. Cayne calls them "mantiques" or "industrial chic".
While the mall features items more than 200 years old, Cayne says many people today simply don’t think to save things. Several of their dealers specialize in art, that uses Repurposed Antiques. Browse through the antique mall, and you’ll catch a glimpse of an old headboard that’s been converted into the back of vanity, or a mirror that now serves as a glass tabletop. an immediate impact, the Cooper City Antique Mall turned to decorator Kevin Alden Reed who created a small room using only a combination of antiques found in the store. The result was a designer kitchen that features a carved breakfront, double oven, stove top purchased from a deconstruction project, a table, high chair and what Cayne called a “mantique” or “industrial chic” bench. “Mantiques” or “Industrial
Chic” uses wood from old barns and old industrial parts. Designers will repurpose materials into functional furniture pieces. It is the ultimate form of recycling, said Cayne. “Rather than sending item to a dump, they are repurposed and made into functional beautiful furniture,” she said. Each one of their staff offers an amazing wealth of knowledge of antiques gained throughout their years of working at antique shows, antique stores, or being avid collectors themselves. It is that experience and good name in the community that customers turn to when they need help dealing with the estates of a loved one. “It can be a very overwhelming time,” said Cayne. Under their guidance, they help families by either running estate sales or by purchasing their items to sell in their store. What oftentimes family members consider junk is turned into money as many artists use antique papers and household items as ephemera for artworks. As a service to customers who have large estates, they offer this service to help them with all their items, not only antiques. Additionally, they also offer a consignment program for antiques and high end collectibles. The piece will be displayed for sale in their showroom. The Cooper City Antique Mall advertises extensively to bring in buyers, and their friendly staff is on hand to assist customers as they shop in our store. They may also list selected consigned items in their online catalog to further increase the chance of sales. Cayne said consignment is a great way to sell unwanted antique items. The Cooper City Antique Mall is the ideal place to go for customers who need a special gift for themselves or that hard-to-shop for friend. Whether designing an entire space or looking for just one special piece, Cayne says customers will find it at the Cooper City Antique Mall. They welcome Interior Designers, new dealers and offer design service either in store, or in a home. They are also considering opening their store to local children, to give them a look back in time through the unique antiques they have. “It is a real history lesson,” Cayne said.
The Cooper City Antique Mall is located at 9800 Griffin Road in Cooper City. They are open 7 days, Monday -Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, or to talk to them about consignment, estate sales or buyouts, phone them at 954-252-0788 or visit them online at www. Money talks The Difference Between a Credit Union and a Bank

W
e are regularly asked by the community and even by members, what makes credit unions different from banks? Credit unions and banks do offer many similar products and services, but there are several differences that can have a big impact on you as a consumer. A Credit Union is a not for profit financial cooperative where membership is open to a group of people with a common bond. Credit Unions are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who are elected by the membership. All profits of a Credit Union are returned to its members in the form of higher dividends, low cost loans, and low or no cost services. As a member of a Credit Union, you are an owner and have a vote in annual elections to select the Board of Directors. Banks are owned by groups of stockholders whose main interest is to earn a healthy return on their investments. In contrast, Credit Unions exist to serve their memberowners, the people who save and borrow there. In other words, Credit Unions return any profits to their members in the form of higher savings rates, better services and lower borrowing rates. PriorityONE Credit Union was established in 1949. Membership in PriorityONE Credit Union is open to: ▸▸ Anyone who lives or works in Broward County ▸▸ Postal, federal or professional employees, Trade Groups, and associations who reside within Florida -Immediate family members of anyone eligible are welcome to join, too, even if the eligible person is not a member At PriorityONE, we make your financial success our number one priority.
