lthough it may not feel like it here in South Florida, it’s officially fall. We may not have the cooler temperatures, but we certainly experience everything else that comes with this season – the routine of weekday homework, piano lessons, sports practices and weekend games and birthday parties. Another tell-tale sign of the season is the store shelves lined with Halloween costumes and tasty treats. Now is the time to embrace this playful time of year. Decorate the house for Halloween. Gather the kids to carve the pumpkin. Invite the neighbors over to bob for apples. On Halloween night, let’s all have some fun while watching our little ones roam the neighborhood dressed as fairy princesses, superheroes, or whatever else tickles their fancy. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures, as these are the memories that last a lifetime. Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone! Sincerely,

he decided to open up a business devoted to just that. In August, his dream came true with the opening of House of Power Hobbies in a shopping center, just opposite Markham Park. “With my second choice at life, I wanted to do something less stressful and that I enjoyed,” he said. The business specializes only in radio-controlled products, and there’s a 52’ flight simulator to teach customers how to fly. It’s a niche that Pain said simply wasn’t being fulfilled in South Florida, and one he says makes everyday feel like Christmas for him. “I love opening the boxes and see what’s come in everyday,” he laughs. He says best of all, the business will let him work with his son Matt, and daughter in law Jessica, who are moving from Orlando to South Florida make it a family effort. Pain also has a 19-year old daughter named Victoria, who is studying nursing at Broward College. Pain says this illness made him realize he was in a rut, and helped him re-focus his priorities. No matter how uncomfortable the treatments made him, he says he kept on pushing and did everything the doctors told him to do. He believes it made a huge difference in staying alive. “What used to disappoint and annoy me, doesn’t anymore,” he said.
O
ne year ago, the day before his son’s wedding, Vernon Pain got a diagnosis that would change his life. The long-time Plantation resident learned he had cancer and knew he was in a heart-wrenching fight for his life. He recalls the worst part of it was seeing his daughter walk down the aisle as a bridesmaid on her uncle’s arm, and wondering if he would be alive when her special day came around. “I wondered if I would ever see her walk down the aisle on my arm at her wedding,” said Pain. Fast forward 12 months through grueling sessions of chemotherapy and radiation, and Pain’s doctors now tell him he has beaten long odds, and is in remission. It is a great start, but far from the resolution he ultimately wants to hear. Doctors wont tell him he is cured of the Non Hodgkins Follicular Lymphoma unless he remains cancer free for a full five years. Still the 52-year old man sees his fight as a major wake-up in his life, and he is a changed man. “I don’t sweat the small stuff anymore. I think more about others around me,” said Pain, who is married to wife Caroline. All through-out his fight, Pain said he kept telling himself that once he went into remission, he was going to give up his 9-5 job as a sales representative and do something he had long wanted to do. Long passionate about remote-controlled planes, cars and helicopters,

lmost any parent of a special needs child knows it is difficult to find programs and services once the child begins to grow older. To help bridge that gap, a group of local women have created a brand new group, designed specifically for disabled teens and adults. “At this group, everyone is a ‘star’, said Dixie Lee Hedrington, one of the organizers of the group. The group, which is primarily geared towards teens and adults with autism or Down Syndrome, meets every Saturday morning at the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts in Plantation. o you have windows that need help and you are not sure what to do with them? You’re lost and need direction? Visit us at Beautiful Windows where our designers will work with you to create a one-of-a-kind design that is unique for you. These BEFORE & AFTER pictures show how a window can be transformed. The small 6 ft. x 4 ft. rectangular window was lost on the 25 ft. high wall. Since it is located in the client’s formal living room near a Baby Grand piano, we needed to add grandeur
Design Inspiration
The design has lots of curves in the form of the swags, the shape of the pole ends, and even the shape of the trim. Rounded edges add softness and are visually very pleasing. The furniture in the room is traditional with carved, curved woodwork. The design incorporates soft lines in the window treatment, adding to

FirSt in Broward the harmonious feel of the room. Whenever possible, go higher and taller. The taller a window treatment is, the more elegant it looks.
Color & Pattern Inspiration
The furniture is gold and other similar shades. When selecting the drapery, I took my cue from the furniture and added the rich merlot and black for that punch of pizzazz. When viewed in its entirety, it definitely has the WOW factor. Note how I mixed and matched several patterns. Do not be shy about mixing your patterns. There are six different fabrics in this one design with two different trims. When mixing patterns keep colors coordinated. Keep textures similar and make sure that one pattern does not drown another pattern. This window dressing has totally transformed the window. It went from being a small hole in the wall to making a statement that commands attention and complements the furniture of the room beautifully. To achieve this effect everything has to be in proportion. This is where you need a skilled eye to put it all together for you. It is good for you to look through magazines to get ideas of what you want, but trust the judgment of your designer, who should know the correct proportions for your room. It is all in the balance. I invite you to visit our Beautiful Windows Showroom. We have over 4,000 sq. ft. of showroom filled with every possible window covering for you to see full size. For the 32nd time, Plant Affair will return to Plantation Heritage Park with a little something green for just about anyone. “We really have a little of everything,” promises Betty Cobb, longtime Plantation resident and the organizer of the Plant Affair. There will also be plenty of plant professionals on hand who can answer any greenery related questions. For a third year, the Woman’s Club is hosting the event to help raise money, while letting guests doing a little sleuthing at the same time. “Everyone who comes will be supporting an organization that supports the community. They are going to have a great time solving a crime while enjoying a good meal,” said Helen Ackerman, the Publicity Chairwoman for the group. As many as 200 people are expected to attend the Murder Mystery Dinner/Theatre Show, which will be held November 4 at the Jacaranda Country Club. This year’s theme is “Texas Honky Tonk Homicide”. The live-action show will be following a script, but diners can expect plenty of improvisation as the actors move among them hunting for clues. The dress is western/saloon and guests are expected to come in costume and take part in the fun. Ackerman says they will be happy they did. “It is a great show and a lot of fun. You have to solve the murder mystery and you get to take part in it,” she said. The GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club is a philanthropic organization that fosters charitable, educational and civic improvements in the community. s President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Federation of Broward County, Eric Stillman sees challenges ahead. but also many opportunities. It is one of the things the Plantation man loves most about his job. “I really believe that there is tremendous untapped potential within Broward County, and especially in the Jewish community. That’s why I was drawn to the challenge,” said Stillman. For the past five years, Stillman has undertaken that challenge and has helped lead the Federation in its mission to improve the quality of Jewish life for all the residents of Broward County and to help Jewish people in need and Israel. Among their programs, helping people with the basic necessities of life, such as food and shelter, senior care, programs for those with special needs and Alzheimer’s, and boosting the county-wide participation in Jewish life. Though there is a large Jewish population in Broward County, most of them are not actively involved with any Jewish organization, such as a synagogue or Jewish Community Center. Changing those numbers in the slow economy has been a challenge. “People have less of their own time and their human and financial resources available because in many cases they are struggling financially themselves,” he said.
Stillman had considerable experience in the world of non-profits before coming to Plantation. He previously served as the Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans for six years, and prior to that worked for the Jewish Federations of Rhode Island, Greater Washington DC, and Palm Beach County. Born in Michigan, Stillman earned his BA in Economics and Government from Clark University. He has a Master in Jewish Studies from Baltimore University, and a Masters of Social Work from the University of Maryland. One of his personal philosophies is that talking about shared values brings people together and makes open dialogue easier. He sees that as fundamental to a community working in harmony. Among the projects he is most proud of to date; recently completing a challenge fundraising match that is going to bring an additional $50,000 to a program for people in dire need of food, shelter and the basics. Stillman and his wife, Jayne, have two sons, Zach, 17, and Jacob, 15. The family has lived in Plantation for the past five years. “We chose this area because it is family-oriented and really the center of the county, and close to everything,” he said. Eric Stillman
Stop the Presses! City No Longer Printing Its Quarterly Magazine By Julie Levin
So where can residents get their city news from here on in? DiLaura says they will have an electronic, online version of the Recreation Quarterly that will include listings of all classes and city events. Class registration and schedule information will be available in pdf format online at Plantation.org,where residents will also find the community calendar. Information can also be found at many businesses and shops around Plantation. For those residents without computers, the city is also soliciting sponsors/advertisers to pay to have about 200 hardcopies printed each quarter and distributed at city facilities. So far, they’ve gotten a sponsor for the Winter 2011 edition and are looking for additional sponsors to come forward for future editions.
W
ant to know what’s happening the city? You are going to have to go online. As result of a budget-cutting measure, the city is planning to no longer print its Plantation Quarterly/Plantation Recreation magazine. “This is purely a financial decision. The City will be saving $82,000 per year, which includes printing and postage,” said Susan DiLaura, the executive aide to the mayor who serves as the editor of the city publication, which was created more than ten years ago. Since that time, residents have been turning to the publication as a major source of information about upcoming city events and news, programs and class schedules. They were printing approximately 34,000 copies per quarter, which were distributed in the mail to all households in Plantation. They were also available at city facilities such as Jim Ward Community Center, City Hall and Central Park. In its printed form, readers enjoyed two publications in one; the Plantation Quarterly was one half of the publication; flip it over and there was the Recreation Quarterly on the other side. “I did get a lot of positive feedback from residents regarding the Quarterly, especially new residents,” said DiLaura.
DiLaura says the city’s Parks & Recreation department has also developed an electronic newsletter that is sent out to residents on the third Friday of each month. Anyone can sign up for that by sending their name and e-mail address to plantationparks@gmail.com. For more information on all city happenings, visit Plantation.org. The Plantation Quarterly will no longer be printed.

f you have ever had knee or shoulder pain, or a backache, you know how debilitating it can feel. At best, it’s a nagging or sharp pain that occurs during a strenuous activity. At worst, it can be a constant drain on your lifestyle. Simple movements seem impossible, and you just can’t get comfortable. If you are having orthopedic or spine problems, make sure you consult with the Orthopedic and Spine specialists at Westside Regional Medical Center. Located in the heart of Plantation, Westside Regional Medical Center has long been recognized regionally for excellence in orthopedic and spine care. The team of highly skilled physicians, nurses, physical therapists, dieticians and case managers provide comprehensive services and a wide array of solutions in the management of disorders of the musculoskeletal system. All of the surgeons are board certified and have acquired advanced training in a number of specialties including: minimally invasive reconstruction, hip and knee replacements, spinal decompression, spinal fusion, sport injuries and pain management.
Knee Surgery:
While technology has improved by significantly in the medical field, there are still many individuals that do not want to hear these two words: knee surgery! However, because of age or injury, knees can become damaged and in need of repair. At Westside Regional Medical Center, their Orthopedic and Spine Institute can help you diagnose issues and determine the best course of treatment. Some procedures that are available include Arthroscopy, Osteotomy, Synovectomy, and knee replacement.
object, remember to bend at the knees. Make your legs do the work and keep your back straight. ▸▸ Stay balanced. If you are carrying a backpack or other bag, keep it centered on your back. Slinging it over one shoulder puts too much pressure on one side, which can lead to back pain or even spinal injuries. ▸▸ Be active. One of the best preventative measures for back pain is regular exercise. Lifting weights keeps your muscles strong, and working your core (with abdominal moves) gives your back more support. ▸▸ Vary your movements. If you play one particular sport, you may do the same twisting motions over and over. Try to work other exercise into your daily routine to offset the repetition. Also, if your job requires you to do repetitive motions, schedule time each day to stand, stretch, and do shoulder rolls. ▸▸ Mind your posture. Whether you are standing or sitting, keep your spine straight and your head and neck aligned. If you work in front of a computer all day, be sure your chair and monitor are both at heights that keep you from leaning forward or backward. ▸▸ If you do strain your spine, allow yourself time to heal before you get moving again. Over-the-counter pain medications can help. You can also apply a cold compress or an ice pack to the affected area for 20 minutes day. After a few days, switch to moist heat. If the pain does not subside, don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether you are suffering from minor discomfort or are in need of a major orthopedic or spine procedure, our team of experts at Westside Regional Medical Center will provide you with the most advanced solutions for your individual and ever-changing needs.
Hip Surgery:
Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a doctor surgically removes a painful hip joint with arthritis and replaces it with an artificial joint. It usually is done when all other treatment options have failed to provide adequate pain relief. The procedure should relieve a painful hip joint, making walking easier. The experts at Westside’s Orthopedic and Spine Institute perform this surgery traditionally and minimally invasively. Physical therapy usually begins the day after surgery and within days you can walk with a walker, crutches, or a cane. Physical therapy will continue for weeks to months following the surgery.
Spine/Back Surgery:
Spine surgery is one just option to be considered in restoring back health. In many cases, nonsurgical options will remedy back pain. These include prescription pain medication, physical exercise and application of ice and/or heat. Another option is to work with a physical therapist. A skilled therapist can teach you exercises and stretches that can ease pain while also improving strength and flexibility. When these conservative measures are not successful, you may need to discuss other alternatives with your physician, particularly under these conditions: ▸▸ You are still in pain, in spite of conservative treatment. ▸▸ You have a damaged spinal disc. ▸▸ You have a spinal deformity. ▸▸ Your legs or arms feel weak or numb. ▸▸ You’re having trouble walking or standing. ▸▸ Your spine is weak or unstable. If your physician feels that surgery is needed, you will need to allow yourself time to heal. In some cases, you may wear a back brace, and in most instances, you will require physical therapy to help restore strength and range of motion.

s our children return to school, many parents and teachers become concerned about one of the most common modern developmental disorders, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which occurs in as many as 1 in 20 of our children. It impacts many aspects of their behavior and performance, both at school and at home, with possible lifelong effects. Patients demonstrate difficulties in certain tasks that, for them, require extra concentration or organizational skills and so affected children wish to avoid such specific situations. The website pubmed.gov lists more than 118 pages of citations regarding genetic studies with the majority providing evidence that ADHD is inherited. Many children with ADHD have a close relative with a developmental disorder. Interestingly, in the mid 1960’s, research began to appear about “minimal brain dysfunction,” (MBD, as it was called at the time). That name evolved into “hyperkinetic” and, shortly after that, “hyperactive” appeared to take firmer hold. Even by 1982, there remained the question about whether there even WAS such a condition, as discussed in a psychiatric journal review entitled, The Myth of the Hyperactive Child and Other Means of Child Control. “Nowadays… naughty children are diagnosed as suffering from ‘child behavior disorders’, treated for their ‘affliction’ with psychotropic drugs… counseling and behavior modification, and from early childhood subjected to a battery of screenings and assessments, the mysterious results… follow them… throughout life.” By the late 1980’s the association with a shortened attention span was being noted; it was only in the last decade of the last century that the term ADHD came into general and medical usage.

Although the name has changed, the therapy hasn’t much. The characteristic features of ADHD—inattention, impulsivity, and motor hyperactivity— have yet to be completely understood. The resulting behaviors lead to difficulties functioning in school, work, and social environments. There is no diagnostic laboratory test for ADHD. Furthermore, it is important to identify other conditions that may be responsible for symptoms or that coexist with ADHD and require treatment. The most important diagnostic tool is an extensive clinical interview – not merely a routine visit to the busy general pediatrician. Once your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, it is important to work with a health care team to develop an effective treatment plan. Medications include stimulants (including amphetamines), non-stimulants, antidepressants, anti-hypertensives, mood stabilizers and other CNS medications. Plus, therapy might sometimes include behavioral therapy and social training to help minimize the use of medications, and hopefully maximize their effectiveness. The question of refined sugar leading to increase of disruptive behaviors has been debated for years and there are MANY moms who swear that their kids get “sugar shock” from certain foods. Personally, I am even more concerned about foods that contain a high amount of artificial coloring and flavoring. If there is a “#” (number) in front of the ingredient – it’s not food. Overall, there can be a great deal of improvement in most of the children if the parents follow this suggested course of treatment: find an experienced physician, have a well-thought-out plan, and try to be even more understanding. hat’s the meaning of the word “success”? Third graders in Plantation are now able to provide their own definition, thanks to a generous donation from the Kiwanis Club of Plantation. For a fifth straight year, the club gave every third grader in the city a brand new dictionary to call their own. “Third grade is the beginning point where they are really looking up and learning how to spell,” said Jim McGonigle, the treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Plantation. All told, the club gave out 850 brand new dictionaries at 8 Plantation elementary schools in the past few months. legally speaking Prescription Drugs – They Can Help You, But They Can Also Hurt You By Howard Citron
P
rescription drugs can be lifesavers - helping millions of people live with varying medical conditions from high cholesterol to thyroid problems to liver ailments. They are also used in treatment therapies for patients suffering from cancer and high blood pressure. But there are some very real risks from prescription drugs as well - especially if they are improperly given, if they are not properly tested before being used, or if their manufacturers are careless or deceptive in production. As a consumer, there are lots of things to watch for when it comes to ensuring that the prescription drugs used by you and members of your family are safe. The FDA maintains a drug recall website where consumers can check to see if a drug has been removed from the market due to defects or a potential harm to patients. The FDA also maintains a site for MedWatch, the FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program, where important safety information is logged about drugs and medical products sold in the United States.
To be an aware consumer, there are several other FDA Web sites available to monitor drug safety information. The agency releases Public Health Advisories which provide important drug safety information and recommendations that can be used by patients or caregivers to avoid or minimize harm from a drug. The advisories are issued when the FDA has information that will assist physicians and patients make better treatment choices. Also kept up to date is the FDA Index to Drug-Specific Information, which features an alphabetical listing of drugs that have been the subject of a Public Health Advisory or other safety notice. In addition, the Drugs@FDA database is available for consumers and others to use to search for information about FDA approved brand name and generic drugs as well as therapeutic biological products. Finally, an FDA Consumer Health Information site is also available to provide timely and easy-to-read articles on product approvals, safety warnings, and other health information To best protect your family members, you must be vigilant about the medications you take and for any warning signs of associated medical problems that can arise. If you or someone you love becomes seriously ill from taking prescription or over-thecounter drugs/products, be sure to seek immediate medical attention. Thereafter, you can begin exploring your legal rights. were extremely crowded prior to treatment. Changes in tooth position are lifelong and naturally occurring phenomenon. The best way to keep teeth from shifting is to wear your retainers as prescribed. If you noticed movement after your braces are removed, please contact your orthodontist.
Keeping your smile beautiful-Long-term expectations
The fact is that throughout your lifetime, even though you have had orthodontic treatment, you can expect changes in tooth position. Many factors at work may cause teeth to shift. Such changes vary from individual to individual and most of the time they are hardly noticeable. But on occasion changes occur that are disappointing to both the patient and the orthodontist. Changes in tooth position are not a failure of your orthodontic treatment but are a natural process. We expect changes in our bodies as we grow older, and teeth are no exception. To help control and limit these changes, retainers are prescribed after your braces are removed.
Can retainers be worn long?
No. Retainers stabilize and preserve the alignment of teeth and jaws that orthodontic treatment achieved. Many people wear removable retainers nightly for the rest of their lives. Ask your orthodontist for guidance for your long term retainer wear.
I had orthodontic treatment as a teen, and now as an adult my teeth are out of place. What can I do?
If you noticed an unwanted change in your smile or bite, contact your orthodontist for information. An orthodontic “tune up” may be necessary to regain proper alignment.
How long do I have to wear retainers?
Will wisdom teeth cause teeth to shift?
Your orthodontist will recommend how long to continue wearing your retainers, whether they are removable (the kind you put in and take out) or fixed (bonded behind your teeth). Wearing your retainers as prescribed is the best way to keep your teeth from moving after your orthodontic treatment. There are many reasons teeth may move following orthodontic treatment. Teeth are not set in concrete, they are in bone. And because bone around your teeth is continually changing (breaking down and rebuilding), your teeth may shift after your braces are removed. By wearing your retainers, your teeth are more likely to remain where your orthodontist has placed them.
Research suggests that wisdom teeth do not necessarily cause teeth to shift. In most cases, removal of wisdom of wisdom teeth is done for general dental health reasons rather than for orthodontic health. Your family dentist or your orthodontist can give you guidance regarding removal of wisdom teeth.
Norena Orthodontics is located in the northeast corner of Sunrise Blvd and Nob Hill Road. Drs Felipe and Ana Maria Norena have a combined orthodontic experience of 35 years. They are both members of the American Association of Orthodontics. They are open Monday - Friday from 9 a..m. to 5 p.m. Call them at 954-474-1600 for an appointment.
Why do some teeth shift?
The small changes that occur after braces are removed are due to a “setting in” as you use your teeth for biting and chewing. The more serious and undesirable changes may be traced to genetics or later –than-normal growth, which is unpredictable. Movement is most common in lower front teeth. This is particularly true if the teeth

ask the expert Where is Body Image Taking Your Child? By Dr. Iris Silverberg
T
ake a look around. Next time you are driving your child to school, see how many weight loss centers you pass on your way. Pick up a magazine and count the numerous ads for quick weight loss promises. Ever wonder what message this is sending to our children? Poor body image begins at the early age of 8 years old. A Harvard study found that 66% of underweight 12 year old girls considered themselves fat. Fifty four percent of females aged 12-23 are unhappy with their body. In a recent survey 81% of 10 year old girls have already dieted at least once. Even normal weight children want to lose weight. Body Image encompasses our perceptions and emotions, and is tied into our mood, self-esteem and physical experiences. Body Image is influenced by media, parents, peers and health professionals. Unfortunately, teens identified the media as their primary source for information about health; not doctors or parents. This leaves our children misinformed and lost. Adolescence is marked by significant growth and changes. It is during adolescence that the final 15-20% of adult height is achieved; 50% adult body weight gained and 40% adult skeletal mass attained. This period of rapid growth needs to be met with the proper increase in caloric intake. If greater calories are consumed than expended it will lead to weight gain. Contrarily,

if calories are insufficient it may lead to health issues ranging from headaches, anemia and decreased cognitive development. Adolescents’ physical and nutritional needs are unique; they are not bigger versions of children or smaller versions of adults. It is critical that they get the proper balanced diet and physical activity during this period to achieve normal body weight and composition. It is time to reflect on our own contributions toward our kids‘ body image. As parents, how we feel and speak about our own body influences how our children feel about theirs. Whether we eat proper nutrition, skip meals or obsess on our own looks does matter. Let’s empower our children. Let’s educate them on proper nutrition, age appropriate exercise and fitness. Let’s give them the tools to build and maintain a great body image and selfesteem. After all, we know that body dissatisfaction leads to low self-esteem and a potential lifetime of health issues, including depression, anxiety, poor eating habits and eating disorders. Iris P. reast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may grow into surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it too, however the number of cases is small. Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there are a number of risk factors. Risk factors that you cannot change include: ▸▸ Age – the chance of getting breast cancer rises as a woman gets older. ▸▸ Gender – women are 100 times more likely to get breast cancer than men. ▸▸ Genes – there are two genes, BRACA1 and BRACA2, that greatly increase the risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer should be tested. ▸▸ Personal factors – beginning monthly cycles before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55. Other risks therapy ▸▸ Being overweight ▸▸ Taking birth control pills ▸▸ Lack of childbearing or ▸▸ Drinking alcohol breastfeeding ▸▸ Having dense breasts ▸▸ Race ▸▸ DES – Women who took diethyl▸▸ Economic status stilbestrol to prevent miscarriage ▸▸ Dietary iodine deficiency may have an increased risk of breast ▸▸ Smoking tobacco cancer after age 40. ▸▸ High fat diet ▸▸ Radiation – If you received radiation ▸▸ Personal history of previous breast therapy as a child or young adult to cancer treat cancer of the chest area, you ▸▸ Family history have a significantly higher risk for ▸▸ Using hormone replacement developing breast cancer Early signs of breast cancer Early breast cancer does not cause symptoms. This is why regular breast exams are important. As the cancer grows, symptoms may include: ▸▸ A lump that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue. The lump may feel hard, have uneven edges, and usually does not hurt. ▸▸ More than 80% of breast cancer cases are discovered when the woman feels a lump. ▸▸ Change in size, shape, or feel of the breast or nipple, for example redness, dimpling, or puckering that looks like the skin of an orange ▸▸ Fluid coming from the nipple, may be bloody, clear to yellow, green and look like pus ▸▸ Changes in breast size or shape ▸▸ Nipple inversion Breast Cancer Screening Breast cancer screening or testing otherwise healthy women will improve outcomes. A number of screening tests are available: ▸▸ Clinical and self breast exams ▸▸ Ultrasound ▸▸ Mammography ▸▸ Magnetic Resonance Imaging ▸▸ Genetic screening ▸▸ Biopsy Death rates from breast cancer in the United States have decreased steadily in women since 1990. The breast cancer mortality rate fell 24% between the years 1990 and 2000 for women aged 30-79 years. The largest decrease in mortality has been seen in women younger than 50 years (3.3% per year) compared with those aged 50 years and older (2.0% per year). The decrease in breast cancer death rates is thought to represent progress in both earlier detection and improved treatment modalities.

legally speaking Tips for Beating the Bank in Foreclosure Proceedings October 2011 | To Advertise in Plantation Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | www.plantationtowntimes.com
By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
F
rom December 2007 to the present, South Florida has experienced a 400 percent increase in foreclosure filings and 1 out of every 197 homes in the United States is undergoing a foreclosure proceeding. In view of these staggering statistics, most homeowners simply give up the fight for their home before it even begins. However, a foreclosure lawsuit is just like any other lawsuit – the lender must prove its entire case before it can obtain a judgment. Just because you’ve been served with foreclosure papers does not mean you have to leave your home! Here are some suggestions on how to use foreclosure proceedings to your advantage, and possibly beat the bank.
CONDUCT A FORENSIC AUDIT OF YOUR LOAN
First of all, perform a detailed audit of your loan transaction through a qualified mortgage auditing firm. A forensic audit often reveals serious violations of Federal and State laws committed by the same lenders that initiate foreclosure proceedings. An audit may also reveal flaws in the transfer of your mortgage. If you don’t know a reputable mortgage audit firm in your area, please contact the Arcia Law Firm and we will gladly point you in the right direction.
FILE A COUNTERCLAIM AGAINST YOUR LENDER
Using the results of your forensic audit, and assuming you have identified violations of law in connection with your loan, you should file a counterclaim against your lender. In other words, sue your lender within the same foreclosure proceedings as a means to establish better negotiating leverage.
DEMAND THE ORIGINAL NOTE
Most foreclosure proceedings are not initiated by the original lender, but rather by a party who claims to “own and hold” the Note securing payment of the loan. Surprisingly, some of these third parties don’t actually have possession of the original note, or the right to enforce the obligation. The Note is a negotiable instrument, like a bank check. Do you know any bank that will cash a “copy” of a check? Likewise, no Court will decide a foreclosure proceeding based upon a “copy” of your Note. If you demand the original Note, and the lender is unable to produce it, a foreclosure judgment cannot be entered.
CHALLENGE YOUR LENDER’S RIGHT TO BRING THE FORECLOSURE PROCEEDING
Florida law only permits an action to be presented by the “real party in interest.” If you never signed an agreement with the party that filed the foreclosure, you can challenge their right to file the foreclosure proceedings. At minimum, you can challenge the validity of the assignment of mortgage and the endorsement on the promissory note. Judges will not hesitate to dismiss a foreclosure proceeding initiated by a company that has no legal right to bring the action. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102, or at www.arcialawfirm.com. The Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” You will receive a complimentary copy during your consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online for at www.arcialawfirm.com.

our hair is one of your best accessories, so why not let one of the top salons around find the perfect look for you that’ll work day in, and day out? Redhead Salon has been offering salon services in Davie for the past three years and owner Jaci Matus says their talented team of artists is ready to assist anyone with their beauty needs. “We are an upscale, yet fun and trendy salon. We cater to all hair types and people of all ages,” said Matus, who has more than a decade’s worth of styling experience. Located at 7750 Nova Drive in Davie, Redhead Salon is known throughout South Florida. They were recently voted “Viewer’s Choice” as the top Salon in Broward on Local Ten news on WPLG. Matus says it’s because her staff is among the best in the industry, with training from some of the top stylists in the beauty and fashion world. “Everyone here loves what they do. It’s not just a job. There is a lot of passion behind it,” she said. With 1,600 square feet, the stylists at Redhead Salon offer a full line of hair services in a warm, friendly and “mod” environment. Their 12 styling stations are set just a bit apart to set the tone for that perfect oneon-one relationship between client and stylist. The Redhead Salon staff features a mix of master stylists and junior stylists, all of whom believe strongly in on-going education and staying current with the very latest in today’s trends and styles. or patients looking for comprehensive, compassionate, state of the art care for arthritis and rheumatic diseases, look no further than Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties. Located in Plantation since 1996, Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties is a full-service diagnostic and treatment center, founded by Rheumatologist Dr. Guillermo Valenzuela. “We offer the highest level of care in rheumatology that you can find in every sense,” said Dr. Valenzuela, who has long been recognized as a leader in the treatment of complex cases of Arthritic and Rheumatic diseases. The practice, which is located at 140 SW 84th Avenue, Suite B is a multi-doctor office specializing in complex cases of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Carpal tunnel, Gout, Sjogrens syndrome, Spondylitis Ankylosing, Lupus (SLE) and much more. They are committed to treating all patients and improving their quality of life, all within their 4,400 square foot facility. “We can provide patients pretty much everything they need for their diagnostic and therapeutic needs within the office,” said Dr. Valenzuela. With 11 exam rooms, and a dedicated staff of four physicians and eight assistants, Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties is able to offer Digital X-Rays, Full Body MRI, Bone Densitometry, and Ultrasound procedures. Dr. Valenzuela says Ultrasound can assist with medical injections for the treatment of symptoms in painful knees, shoulders, spine and more. “Before they were more difficult to access. Now we can more accurately access with the aid of ultrasound guidance,” said Dr. Valenzuela.

For patients who require intravenous injections, they also have an in-house Infusion Suite, with five state-of-the art chairs and an attentive staff that helps provide treatment. “It is much easier for patients to come here. They don’t have to go through hurdles of hospital care, creating a savings of time and money,” said Dr. Valenzuela. Dr. Valenzuela received his medical training at the University of Buenos Aires, New York Medical College and Cornell University Medical College, where he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Clinical Immunology. Along with Dr. Valenzuela, patients can also see Dr.Gary Sterba, a physician specializing in Adult Rheumatology who joined the practice in May. Dr. Sterba is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and member of the adult and pediatric sections of the American College of Rheumatology. He is ECFMG certified. They also proudly offer the services of Dr. Kristina Wiers, who is one of a very few doctors in the state to specialize in Pediatric Rheumatology. As an added convenience to patients, they also have Podiatric services of Dr. Abraham Wagner, Foot and Ankle specialist and surgeon. “Many of the diseases we treat affect the foot in a mechanical fashion, so we can further improve the care we deliver to our patients,” said Dr. Valenzuela. Many times, patients will see more than one doctor during a visit to make the experience
as efficient as possible. As leaders in their field, Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties continually contributes to the development of new treatments and protocols through their contribution in clinical studies. The satisfaction of performing clinical research helps in two ways, since it allows us to help patients in need of new treatment alternatives in the short term, but in the long term research results in the approval and application of better courses of treatment. Dr. Valenzuela invites everyone to make an appointment and see what they are all about. “We offer personalized care in a highly specialized center for Arthritis and Rheumatic diseases,” said Dr. Valenzuela. Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease Specialties is located at 140 SW 84th Avenue, Suite B in Plantation. Their office hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. They also have a second location in Aventura. For more information or to make an appointment, phone them at 954-476-2338. send an email to info@ valenzuelatheumalogy.com or visit them online at www.ValenzuelaRheumatology. com or www.rheum-care.com .

n South Florida, the month of October means cooler weather and the start of the planting season. It is the perfect time to plant annuals, vegetables and herbs or to create a container garden. Davie’s DynaServ Nursery and Accessories offers a large selection of trees and plants to fit every outdoor lifestyle and budget. It is a one-stop-shop for all of your gardening needs. DynaServ has a wide variety of foliage, from conventional landscape material to exotic items. Derek Lewis, garden center manager, hand picks much of the foliage. “We look for high quality plants and trees at affordable prices,” said Lewis. The nursery sells trees and shrubs; annuals and perennials; vegetable plants and herbs; palms; shrubbery and hedge material; tropical plants and much more. Once the foliage is selected, customers can visit the garden center to choose from a large selection of gift and decor items to add to the landscape. The Center has statues, benches and bridges, as well as ceramic and glazed contemporary and traditional pottery in many colors and styles. It also has other garden related accessories like wind chimes, fertilizer, mulch, pesticides, planters, ornaments, unique one-of-a-kind garden gifts, accessories and more. Customers can take a break from the heat in DynaServ’s new shade structure. The relaxing cool zone is filled with new items from Vietnam, as well as some of the Center’s many fountains, which range in size from 36 to 96 inches. “The fountains provide a great way for customers to relax at home as they listen to the sounds of flowing water in their backyards,” said Derek.

DynaServe has a large selection of fountains.
Impatiens are among the most requested plants this time of year, because they are inexpensive, easy to grow and usually last for several months. They are also versatile and can be used in planting beds, containers or hanging baskets. DynaServ has a wide variety of impatiens in 15 different colors. Some customers prefer a monochromatic look, while others like to mix and match. “Impatiens can have a powerful impact on any garden,” said Derek. “My favorite combination is red, lipstick and violet, but it is all a matter of taste.” This is also an ideal time of year to plant herb and vegetable gardens. They are a great way for customers to save some money and grow their own organic food. Herbs and vegetables can be planted in raised beds, planting boxes, pots or containers in addition to or instead of foliage. DynaServ sells a large assortment of herbs (thyme, parsley, purple and Italian basil, cilantro and more) and vegetables (tomatoes, pepper, jalapenos, lettuce, eggplant, okra and more), as well as organic soil. Container gardening has become a popular trend and DynaServ has everything you need. From simple to elaborate, the possibilities are limitless. The Center has hundreds of beautiful containers and flowers that can bring life to a dead space or unused corner. Containers can be placed inside the house or outside as an architectural feature in the middle of a planting bed. Derek encourages customers to use more than one plant to create interest. DynaServe will even deliver the container and materials and set it up at the customer’s home.
DynaServ helps customers design their own gardens.
One of the many ways that DynaServ sets itself apart from its competitors is through its commitment to customer service. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and helps customers select the right plant, fertilizer and soil for their landscape or the right plants and flowers to create a unique design in a container. They also offer instruction on proper plant care and recommend plant combinations. Many customers bring in photos or specifications and the staff helps them solve their landscaping problems. After they leave the nursery, they can call or email with any questions or concerns. DynaServ also keeps them informed of any unusual infestations, like the white fly, and how to control them. “We want to make sure that our customers can successfully grow whatever they purchase,” said Derek. “I receive daily emails from customers with a variety of questions and I am happy to answer all of them.” DynaServ’s staff understands its responsibility to give back to the community. On Earth Day, DynaServ regularly donates plants and soil to be distributed. It is currently maintains Shenandoah Park and Orange Park at no cost in a spirit of cooperation to support the Town of Davie during these tough economic times. It donated a fountain, plants and landscaping to the Veteran’s Hospital and much more. DynaServ Nursery and Accessories is located at 1000 South Flamingo Road in Davie, just south of I-595. Twin sisters Sydney Cohen (left) and Alexandria Cohen (right in peach shirt) were at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines recently to sell shopping passes for Macy’s Annual Shop for a Cause charity fundraiser to support the nonprofit charity that bears their names. The Sydney & Alexandria Cohen Foundation was created after the girls were born 10 weeks premature and spent 5 weeks in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive care Unit. In an effort to show their gratitude, the Plantation family is raising money to buy and donate state-of-the-art incubators for the NICU.
