Dear Friend, want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened!
I
“A Doctor’s Confession toWest Broward”
It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you
an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/11) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $35. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOU THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT. Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Nyrie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Pines Family Chiropractic and it’s at 9841 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. Our phone number is 954-435-4380. Call Jessica for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. s the memories of our summer vacations slowly fade away, we now find ourselves rushing around to stock up on school supplies, to find school uniforms that actually fit, and to gently try to get our little ones (and not so little ones) back into the spirit of learning. In other words: it’s ‘Back to School’ time! While the hot and sticky summer temperatures will stay with us for a few months longer, it won’t be long before we’re back into our school time routines. Study sessions, afterschool activities and sports will soon start anew. Before your weekends are once again overtaken by sports practices and birthday parties, take time to enjoy these final weeks of summer. Remember, fun family memories are made of lazy days in the pool and late-night movie marathons. Cherish the carefree days of summer because we’ll be ‘Back to School’ before you know it! Sincerely,

Pool Safety – The Key to A Safe Summer in South Florida
Accidents happen.
By Howard Citron
T
emperatures are on the rise as another Florida summer is in full swing. As we all look to beat the summer heat, our swimming pools will get crowded quickly. In just a one week span last month, four children nearly drowned in Palm Beach County alone. This was a sober reminder that swimming pools can be deadly traps for children. Each day, approximately ten people die from unintentional drowning. In fact, drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional death by injury for people of all ages and the second leading cause of child death in the United States, behind only motor vehicle accidents. Statistically, fifty percent of children submerged in pools die. Too often, drowning accidents are preventable. As parents, we encourage our neighbors in the community to stay safe in and around pools, spas, lakes, canals and the beach by practicing as many safety steps as possible. Children under five are most at risk and have the highest drowning rate of any age group. In fact, Florida has the highest drowning death rate in the nation for children under five.
They can even happen to you.
Here are a few tips to help prevent these types of accidents. Never leave a child unattended. If a child wanders off and you lose site of him/her, check the pool first. Also, take all physical safety precautions possible. Install child proof fences around home swimming pools. The fence should be four sided and keep the pool area completely separate from the house and the yard. The fence should be at least four feet high. In addition, cover and lock hot tubs when they aren’t in use and keep rescue equipment such as a life preserver and telephone near the pool. Also, install an alarm on doors and/or windows so you will be alerted if one is opened. Finally, never drink alcohol while you are responsible for watching children near or in a pool. Alcohol can dull the senses and make it more likely you won’t notice a dangerous situation. Alcohol can also increase the time it takes for you to react to a drowning situation. Education is another key to reducing drowning accidents. Statistics show that participation in formal swimming classes reduces the risk of drowning in children under five by as much as 88%. Taking a CPR class is also important. In a drowning situation, seconds count. CPR performed by bystanders before emergency personnel arrive has been shown to improve the outcome in many victims. The quicker the intervention occurs, the more likely for an improved outcome.

s the summer winds down, great changes are underway for all of us this fall. We will all deal with different school leadership and different ways of handling our shrinking city budgets. We will also find ways to continue to work with a fluctuating economy. But the most interesting issue we will face that will carry significant impact on all our futures, and the future of our state, will be redistricting. Every ten years, after the Census is taken, the Florida Legislature is tasked with redrawing the boundaries of our Congressional, Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley state house, and state senate districts. The intent is to ensure that districts are equal in population so that each vote counts equally. From Florida’s sheer population growth, the state has gained two more Congressional seats. In order to ensure a fair process, Amendments 5 and 6 were passed by 63% of Florida voters on November 10, 2010. The amendments established rules in the Florida Constitution to achieve balanced voting districts. The Florida Constitution now prohibits political favoritism where districts are drawn to favor incumbent politicians or political parties. It requires that districts be compact, contiguous, and follow city or county lines where feasible.
▸ ▸ ▸ ▸
It is no secret that once redistricting takes place, we can possibly see a shift in the political scene in Florida. Redistricting can and will bring out new candidates, seeking to represent new districts, and can result in a host of new issues. New issues can possibly lead to different impacts on our quality of life. They can also have an impact on what priorities we address as a city, county, region and state. It will naturally be challenging to decide what priorities to pursue. Throughout the next year, the Legislature will be hosting several public hearings throughout the state from June 20 to September 1. As citizens, it is our civic duty to take an active and vital role in how our government will deal with those issues that can have a severe impact on all our futures. So, I encourage you to attend these hearings and listen to what is being said by your fellow residents as well as the presenters. Through this effort you can understand firsthand the issues that will be faced by all parties as they seek to draw boundaries that will be fair and reflective of our wonderfully diverse population that is Florida.

S
ummer is a difficult time at most food pantries, since students lose access to school-provided breakfast and lunch meals and there are fewer donations from groups and private individuals. When Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis learned that The Pantry of Broward would be faced with a food shortage this summer, he made it his mission to fill the shelves. He solicited help from other elected officials in Broward County. He also spoke at the April Broward League of Cities meeting, where he introduced Food Pantry CEO Catherine “Penny” Loughan. “Our seniors never expected to live this long,” Loughan told the elected officials. “Times are changing and we need to take care of our seniors.” Five cities and one commission district accepted the challenge. In only three months, the effort resulted in a donation of 9,793 pounds of food and a check for $124. The Pantry of Broward helps an average of 400 households every month by giving out 22,000 pounds of food to seniors who are either on a low fixed income or raising grandchildren. “Each household is given a 55 pound box of staples, to help them get through the month,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “In many cases, the food makes it possible for the seniors to purchase medications and other necessities.” The Pantry is
always in need of items like jelly, Jell-O, peanut butter, non-frosted cereal, chili, spaghetti sauce, pasta, oatmeal, tuna/ canned meats and other non-perishables, as well as donations of store gift cards. “We are very excited and cannot thank the Mayor enough for all of his hard work and efforts,” said David Esposito of The Pantry of Broward Development Department. Ortis is a champion of many worthwhile causes, but he holds the Food Pantry Challenge near and dear to his heart. “As a child our family relied on the generosity of others to fill our pantry,” said Mayor Ortis. “Life was difficult.” His ultimate goal is for every City to sign up for a specific month to ensure that the pantry is filled year round. ENJOY!
ask the mayor Pembroke Pines Well, we won another award for the great City of Pembroke Pines. We came in second by just a slim margin in the U.S. Conference of Mayors drinking water contest. Pembroke Pines was selected to be one of the five finalists to be judged at the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting. There were five decanters numbered from one to five and as Mayors passed by they were asked to sip and taste the water and judge the best tasting by marking a scoring card from 1-5. The five finalists were Pembroke Pines; Racine, Wisconsin; Pembroke Pines Mayor Denton, Texas; Rochester, New York and Albany, New York. Frank C. Ortis Well, Racine, Wisconsin just squeaked by us and we came in second - a great honor none the less. Our City water comes from the Biscayne Aquifer and fluoride is added to it. Not only is our water tasty, but it is good for you and your children. This is a perfect example of why you should not be buying all of those plastic bottles that we have to recycle (hopefully) and instead just take our award winning water with you all day long. I wanted to talk about recycling once again. Many of you know that we have an active recycling program in Pembroke Pines. We now have single stream recycling which means that you can combine plastics bottles and newspapers. Recycling is good for the environment and reduces our carbon footprint. It is a mandate from the State of Florida to reduce the Carbon Footprint by 75%. The green and blue tubs that you see out once a week for collection are provided free from the City. If you do not have those tubs, please call our Utility Department which will provide them. Recycling always produces revenue for the City because it reduces the Solid Waste tonnage. My message, let’s all get into the recycling mode. I wanted to inform you that we are now providing fire service to the Town of Southwest Ranches. This is what local governments should be doing to help each other. It will reduce our budget and the Town gets great fire service - a win/win for all. Please have a safe and happy and enjoyable summer. As usual, I am always available at fortis@ppines.com or by calling 954-435-6505.

iramar’s Palm View Animal Hospital combines the highest level of veterinary medicine with outstanding client service and a compassionate touch. The full-service veterinary hospital offers a variety of services for dogs and cats, including regular preventative care, medicine, surgery, dental care, bathing, boarding and more. The caring and knowledgeable staff has at least seven years of experience. The animal hospital is conveniently located at 12120 Miramar Parkway, in the Miramar Square Plaza near Kohls, just east of the 1-75 Miramar exit. Owner Dr. Waldie-Torres has had a passion for animals for as long as she can remember, so it was a natural choice for her to become a veterinarian. Growing up, she had dogs, cats, parrots, fish and hamsters. She currently has four cats and some fish. “I just love being around The staff at Palm View Animal hospital is caring and animals and caring for them,” compassionate. After practicing in Coral Springs for over nine years, she decided to open an office closer to her Miramar home. “There are so many animals in my own neighborhood and community that need help and I wanted to reach out to them,” said Waldie-Torres. “Our goal is to provide an excellent experience for both the patient and owner.” Palm View uses brand new state-of-the-art equipment which allows Dr. Waldie-Torres and her staff to do things in an efficient manner that produces quick results. The hospital has three examination rooms; a pharmacy; treatment area with laboratory; surgical suite; bathing area and isolation area. It has digital radiology equipment so x-rays can be read in less than a minute. It also has an in-house lab, eliminating the need to send out blood work, urine and other samples. In only a few minutes, results are ready and Dr. Waldie-Torres can begin recommending a course of treatment. In the event that a patient requires surgery, most procedures are done at the hospital, where the patient is comfortable and familiar. Dr. Waldie-Torres recommends annual visits for young pets and more frequent visits for older pets. “It is important to discover issues as early as possible,” said Dr. Waldie-Torres. “A check- up often reveals health Palm View Animal Hospital uses state-of-the-art problems that the owner had not equipment during surgery to keep your pet safe. noticed. This protects the pets, as well as owners that can catch certain diseases from their pets.” During a full physical exam, Dr. Waldie-Torres checks the animal’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth and skin; listens to the heart and lungs; examines the joints and skeletal system; palpates the abdomen to feel internal organs; updates vaccines and more. She also recommends a heart worm and fecal test to check for parasites. Dr. Waldie-Torres understands that her client’s pets are like a part of their family and spends as much time as needed answering any questions. She makes sure that they have the tools they need in order to make informed decisions and take care of their pets once they leave the hospital. She is surprised by the amount of pets she sees that have not had the procedure. “This puts the pets at risk of developing certain cancers,” said Dr. Waldie-Torres. “Females are prone to mammary tumors and uterine infections and males can get prostate disease. It is so important for their health and helps prevent unwanted litters.” She is so passionate about it that she has been working with the Cat Network to provide low cost spays and neuters for stray cats to help control pet overpopulation. She also plans to align herself with other rescue organizations. Dr. Waldie-Torres has also helped connect pets with their owners when someone drops a lost pet at the office. Dr. Waldie-Torres recommends that all pets have a microchip implanted. This simple procedure assigns a unique number to the pet which identifies its owner. She has also been known to look for a home for an occasional pet that is unwanted or rescued. She is currently trying to find a home for Eva and Glade, two kittens that were rescued from the Everglades. legally speaking New Tools to Defend Residential Mortgage Foreclosures By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
S
o far, two large law firms in South Florida have been forced to close their foreclosure practice as a result of claims and court decisions that these firms provided false information in order to improperly repossess properties on behalf of their lender clients. As a result of the actions by these firms -- which led to their demise – new tools have emerged to successfully defend residential mortgage foreclosures.
Forensic Mortgage Audit
A forensic mortgage audit involves an in depth analysis of the loan transaction by a lending compliance expert to uncover violations of federal and state lending laws committed by the original lender. These violations may even be attributable to the current lender under certain circumstances. If presented in a timely manner, the findings from a forensic mortgage audit may be used to aggressively defend a foreclosure action, to offset and reduce the amount owed on the loan obligation, and to even negotiate a worthwhile modified or restructured loan.
Securitization Analysis
During the real estate boom from 2003 to 2007, many lenders sold groups of mortgages in “securitized pools” to investment trusts on Wall Street. These trusts were created as investment tools that allowed lenders and investors to receive highly preferential tax treatment. In order to receive these tax benefits, however, strict regulations had to be followed. A securitization analysis by a qualified and credible firm can reveal whether an individual loan transaction was properly and timely transferred to a valid trust, i.e., was the loan properly “securitized.” If the loan obligation is proven not to have been properly securitized, an investment trust cannot foreclose.
Transfer History Analysis
Even if the loan is not part of an investment trust, many loans have been sold multiple times. Each time a loan was sold, certain legal transfer requirements had to be fulfilled to legalize the transfer and to allow the new transferee to foreclose, if necessary. A transfer history analysis tracks the mortgage from its originator to the true current legal owner and holder of the obligation, and also identifies any breaks in the transfer chain which could prevent the current lender from foreclosing. In some cases, this analysis has uncovered that certain lenders even forged mortgage assignment documents through the use of so-called “robo-signers” to overcome transfer issues, which led to findings of fraud and the cancellation of the mortgage debt altogether. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online at www.arcialawfirm.com. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

legally speaking Some Changes in the Law By Evan Baron
I
n the past several years there have been some changes in family law. Florida has done away with the designation of residential or custodial parent. The Child Support Laws have also gone through some changes with the percentage of overnights needed for a reduction now 20% instead of the previously required 40%. Florida has also eliminated the 25% reduction for day care or after care expenses that the parent who was not directly paying such expense did receive. As of August 1, there were some additional changes or perhaps clarifications to existing laws. The majority of these changes or clarifications dealt with alimony. Unlike child support, Florida does not follow any alimony guidelines. Each case is based upon the needs and the abilities of each spouse. Length of marriage and the income of the parties; as well as lifestyle enjoyed during the marriage is considered.

Three new factors were added to a judge’s consideration in determining alimony: ▸▸ The responsibilities each party will have with regard to any minor children they have in common. ▸▸ The tax treatment and consequences to both parties of any alimony award. ▸▸ All sources of income available to either party, including income from investments held by either party. In addition to the above changes, the legislature has further defined certain additional terms and presumptions: ▸▸ Short term marriages are marriages having a duration of less than 7 years. ▸▸ Moderate term marriages are marriages having a duration of greater than 7 years but less than 17 years. ▸▸ Long term marriages are marriages having a duration of 17 years or greater. Certain categories of alimony were also further defined: Bridge the Gap Alimony: Can be awarded for no more than 2 years to assist a party in the transition from being married to being single. This alimony will terminate upon the death of either party or the remarriage of the receiving spouse. In addition, this alimony cannot be modified in either amount or duration. Rehabilitative Alimony: Can be awarded to a spouse to assist in establishing the capacity for self support through education, training, work experience or redevelopment of previous skills. A defined rehabilitative plan must be part of this award. Durational Alimony: Awarded when permanent periodic alimony is inappropriate. This amount may be modified or terminated based upon a substantial change of circumstance, but the length of this form of alimony cannot be modified absent exceptional circumstances. This term cannot exceed the length of the marriage. For information, visit www.divorcebroward.com or call 954-385-9160.

International Dance Academy Raises the “Barre”

xcitement is in the air at the International Dance Academy as it prepares
for yet another spectacular season. The studio certainly raised the bar last year. Not only did its annual production of The Nutcracker ballet sell-out, but its spring performance of Coppélia received standing ovations. Even more impressive, two of its students are now busy preparing to compete at the “World Olympics of Ballet.”
Saturday, August 20, 1-4 p.m. Free Ballet & Jazz Classes Meet Deborah Buttner, Mary Buttner and the professional teachers of IDA! Registration • Refreshments
One of the reasons the International Dance Academy (IDA) is so successful is its incredible staff led by Artistic Director Deborah Buttner and Co-Director Mary Buttner. These ladies are highly respected dancers, teachers and choreographers with strong classical ballet backgrounds. Deborah is a graduate of the prestigious London Studio Center Classical Ballet program and trained in both England and South Africa. As a professional dancer, she toured the British Isles and America performing numerous lead roles. As an instructor, she is qualified in both the Royal Academy of Dance and Cecchetti methods. “I believe demonstrating the most demanding classical techniques and variations is essential to inspiring and correctly training students,” explains Deborah, whose first teacher was her mother Mary. In addition to the Buttners, IDA’s international faculty includes Eriberto Jimenez, a soloist with the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami, and Shaina Kaim, a graduate of IDA who returns as an accomplished teacher after two years in a professional ballet company. In addition, master classes taught by specialist teachers add excitement to the mix. IDA is one of the preeminent ballet schools in South Florida. Dancers study the acclaimed Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) method. RAD is the most highlyregarded training and examining body for classical ballet in the world, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II. Dancers study a defined curriculum and must pass a series of examinations satisfying the extraordinarily high standards of the RAD in order to be awarded internationally recognized certification. “Whether dancing for fun or pursuing a dance career, the Royal Academy of Dance credential puts our dancers at a great advantage,” states Mary. “They also gain the confidence and the great satisfaction of knowing they met
the most rigorous standards in dance. The International Dance Academy is the only studio in South Florida offering this prestigious academic program.” The IDA students have performed extraordinarily well. Of the 30 dancers entered in the grades three, four and five levels of the RAD examination, 27 received Distinction. Eleven of the dancers scored 90% or higher, with two earning a 98%, and one dancer, Seoyeon Kim, scoring an unheard of 100%. Even more impressive, two of the school’s elite dancers, Haylee Levin and Abbey Kay, scored so well on the RAD final examination that they have qualified to compete at the Genée International Ballet Competition, one of the most competitive ballet events in the world. It will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, in October. The Genée, as it is informally known, is considered the Olympics of ballet. It is the ultimate level of competition for an amateur classical ballet dancer. Typically only 30 to 35 ballerinas from around the world qualify each year. It is unprecedented to have two dancers from Florida, let alone the same ballet company, meet the high standards of RAD. In the last 90 years, only one other dancer from Florida has qualified to represent the United States at the Genée. While IDA has certainly proven it is South Florida’s premier ballet school, it also offers a complete menu of dance classes for all ages. Fall classes, which begin on August 22nd, are offered six days a week for all levels of dancers. Class choices include Ballet, Creative Movement, Pointe, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern and Lyrical. Also offered is the popular TuTu Cuties, a mommy-and-me style class for two and three-year-olds. For adults, the

studio offers classical ballet classes at beginner through intermediate levels. The studio is also home to the Jazzercise adult exercise program. Young dancers who want to kick-start their dance year can register for IDA’s one-week Summer Intensive Program taking place August 15-19th. According to Deborah, the stretching, strengthening and technique classes will “shake off the cobwebs” and get dancers ready for the fall classes or to audition for The Nutcracker. The open audition is scheduled for Saturday, September 10th. “We welcome auditions by dancers who want the experience of dancing in a full-scale professional production at a major performing arts theater. We have roles for all ages and skill levels, from the tiniest mouse to the exquisite Sugar Plum Fairy,” says Deborah. “We like to inspire our young dancers through the challenges, excitement and learning that come with performing in a spectacular full-length theater production.” The 12th season of the spectacular Nutcracker will be performed December 9-11th at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Dancers will perform five shows during the three day run which includes the popular Sunday matinee followed by “Meet Clara and Friends.” Dancers and potential students can meet the Buttners

and the IDA teachers at an Open House on Saturday, August 21st from 1-4pm. This is an opportunity to tour the 5,500 square foot facility, which includes large classroom studios, a special studio for private instruction, a custom-costume fabrication center, a “quiet room” for homework and study, and a lunchroom. IDA will offer free ballet and jazz classes during the Open House. The studio will also be conducting dancer assessments and class placements, and accepting registrations. The registration fee will be waived for dancers presenting proof of previous registration at another dance studio. Come dressed to dance and join the fun at International Dance Academy. International Dance Academy, founded in 2000, is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park at 825 Shotgun Road in Weston. ore than 500 women applied to become Miami Dolphins cheerleaders for the 2011-2012 NFL season. Eighteen-year-old Ife of Miramar was among the 42 women who were selected to help cheer the Miami Dolphins to victory. Ife grew up in Miami with five brothers and one sister. Her parents are from Spain and Cuba, making her a first generation American. She is currently studying cosmetology and hopes to pursue a career as a professional make-up artist. According to Director of Cheerleaders Emily Newton, the cheerleaders were chosen based on their talent, personality, flexibility, fitness, spirit and showmanship. They also had to be true Miami Dolphin fans and passionate about the team. “We are looking for women who exude confidence and have a personality that sparkles in front of an audience,” said Newton. The women have already started learning more than 20 routines that they will perform during home games. They have also begun working with fitness trainers to build their stamina. “It takes a lot of hard work to prepare for the games,” said Newton. “The cheerleaders have to be in great physical condition in order to perform three hours worth of material.” The women will also be responsible for community service and making special appearances throughout the season. For information on the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders, visit www.miamidolphinscheerleaders.net. Ife of Miramar will help cheer the Miami Dolphins to victory during the 2011-2012 season.

Wednesday, August 17 Concussion and Injury Prevention in Athletes The most accepted definition of “concussion” is an incident characterized by an immediate or post-traumatic alteration of consciousness, disturbance of vision, and equilibrium. Many contact sports have a high risk of concussion.
Q: What is a concussion? A: The most widely accepted definition of concussion is an incident of
head trauma resulting in mild traumatic brain injury with possible injury to the cranial nerves and blood vessels. Some sports have a higher risk of concussion. These include: football, soccer, wrestling, ice hockey, gymnastics and rugby to name a few. Symptoms may include: ▸▸ Headache ▸▸ Difficulty concentrating ▸▸ Sleep difficulties ▸▸ Disorientation ▸▸ Gait / balance disturbances ▸▸ Brief loss of consciousness (less common) ▸▸ Amnesia Q: What is the best treatment for a concussion? A: Immediately following an impact or injury, remove the athlete from competition or activity. Begin to assess all of the concussion symptoms and have the athlete evaluated by a physician trained in concussion management. If loss unconsciousness occurs, the athlete will likely need an evaluation with an emergency room physician to rule out more serious injuries such as skull fractures or bleeds. Symptoms that persist longer than 48-72 hours may warrant imaging. Q: How can an athlete prevent any other incidents of concussion? A: The athlete should return to play or activity only at the recommendation of their physician or healthcare professional. It is important for the athlete to wear the appropriate protective gear specific to the sport. All athletes, especially those who have suffered a concussion, should maintain proper pre- and post-game conditioning and proper sport techniques to optimize safety.

Fitness Forum Four Things Women Should Be Doing in their Fitness Training August 2011 | To Advertise in Pines Miramar Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | www.pinesmiramartowntimes.com
By Ellen Latham,
I
f you are a female and your workouts are light weights and steady (base pace) cardio, you are in for some bad news. These things will not get you the results that you are after. To increase your fitness level, burn fat and improve muscle tone, you’ve got to step up your game.
The following things are a must: High Intensity Training (also the basis of Orangetheory Fitness)
When women at the gym are coasting on the treadmill or the elliptical (we call this base pace), they are not doing much to break through physique changes. High intensity interval training is a 20 minute cardio workout that includes an intense burst of a push and all out effort combined with that coasting (base pace) period. This is the best way to get into the best shape of your life, burn a lot of fat and stimulate your hormones for a stronger body.
Lift Heavier Weights
For most women, a typical weight training session equals light dumbbell exercises. But doing fewer reps with more weight (8 reps with 15 lb. dumbbells rather than 15 reps with 8 lb. dumbbells) will help you to burn more fat. Muscle
strength and definition will occur immediately.
Upper body Workouts
Women tend to store body fat around the waist, hips and thighs so they typically concentrate on lower body exercises instead of upper. There is no such thing as spot reducing, so if you are just doing lower body exercises you are slowing down your overall fitness progress. Even though push ups and pull ups are hard, they will make a huge difference in how you look.
Power Work
Explosive power is huge if a woman wants to take her body to the next level. Rowing (which takes place in every Orangetheory workout ) uses all the muscles in a rhythmic explosion. This works connections you do not get to with any other exercises. Ellen Latham, MS owner of Ellen’s Ultimate Workout and Pilates Studio, 5173 S. f you are tired of seeing a new doctor every time you visit your physician, make sure you check out the offices of Dr. Craig S. Shapiro for all of your hearing, and ears, nose and throat medical needs. In practice for 19 years, Dr. Shapiro offers a full range of medical, diagnostic and surgical services that will cover everyone in your family, from pediatric issues to hearing devices. “We are a one-stop shop for everything from children to grandparents,” said Dr. Shapiro. Dr. Shapiro is a part of South Florida ENT Associates, a group consisting of 43 board certified ear, nose, and throat physicians in South Florida. Located throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties, SFENTA’s physicians have been caring for patients in the area for over 30 years.
Dr. Shapiro’s Care Center is located at 500 N. Hiatus Road, Suite 101 in Pembroke Pines
that they will want to use,” he explained. Dr. Shapiro began his career in 1985, after receiving a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Southeastern University of Health Sciences, and then completed his one year rotating internship at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan, as well as a four year residency through the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and Facial Plastic Surgery which included a one year of General Surgery at Northeastern Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Shapiro is board certified with the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology. He also holds professional memberships with the following associations: Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Broward County Medical Association, Florida Society of Otolaryngologist/Head, Neck, Surgery and the Greater Miami ENT Society. He invites patients to come see what he and his dedicated staff of 9 employees are all about for any hearing, or ENT needs. Most of his staff have been with him since he opened his doors. “We have a very homey, caring type of office,” said Dr. Shapiro. “I think it shows in the care we give. Patients who come to this office know everybody.”
Dr. Craig Shapiro
While some SFENTA Care Centers use a multi-physician approach, Dr. Shapiro is the only doctor on staff at his Care Center in Pembroke Pines. Located in a 2,600 square foot office at 500 N. Hiatus Road, Dr. Shapiro offers general ENT medical services for anyone from infants, to children, parents and grandparents. They can help with issues including allergies, nasal congestion, sinus symptoms, hearing loss, sleep apnea, snoring and much more. Best of all, patients get to establish a one-onone relationship with Dr. Shapiro. “You are not seeing multiple ear, nose and throats doctors in a practice, you are seeing only me and you get my full attention,” he said. At Dr. Shapiro’s Care Center, patients will also find the Clear Tone Hearing Center, a full service facility offering sales, service, and repair on all brands and styles of hearing devices, in affordable prices. Not sure if your hearing device is working, or if you even need one? Dr. Shapiro thoroughly examines all patients before making any recommendations to make sure there are no medical issues, including signs of infection, hearing issues, tumors, ear wax or more. From there, the staff can perform a full hearing evaluation and make an individualized recommendation for each patient. Dr. Shapiro says hearing devices have made huge technological strides in recent years and are now smaller, more advanced and comfortable to use. They also offer the latest technology, with many devices now 100% digital and able to offer connectivity and streaming to cell phones, computers, house phones and televisions. Their in-house lab can also custom design noise-reducing ear plugs, or ear plugs for swimmers. Before sending patients home with a new hearing device, the staff at the Clear Tone Hearing Center lets them try it out with a number of different noise scenarios they can simulate right in their offices. “We try to make it as close to their environment as possible,” Dr. Shapiro said. Patients are encouraged to try the device in their own homes for at least a week, and bring it back if they aren’t 100% satisfied. “We want them to have devices

ment test for breast cancer. HALO can identify a woman’s risk of breast cancer up to eight years before it could be detected on a mammogram. “The HALO test does not replace the mammogram or breast exam, but rather provides more information to identify high risk women,” explains Dr. Weiss, noting that HALO does not diagnose breast cancer, it is simply a screening tool. “HALO is looking for abnormal Dr. Simon Weiss cells years before they might turn into a cancerous growth. By identifying which women are at greater risk, we can monitor their breast health more closely.” He recommends that all women over the age or 25 have a HALO Breast Pap Test as part of their annual gynecological check-up, just like a cervical pap smear. The test is quick, easy and pain-free. Using a device similar to a massaging breast pump, HALO collects nipple aspirate fluid (NAF) for laboratory analysis. Because breast cancer typically originates in the ductal system of the breast, by examining the NAF doctors can identify abnormal cells and determine if a woman is at elevated risk for breast cancer. HALO and da Vinci® are just two examples of the cutting edge medicine Dr. Weiss practices. He also offers patients in-office, non-surgical treatments for sterilization and incontinence. “Many women are plagued by stress urinary incontinence, but you don’t need to live with it,” states Dr. Weiss. “Renessa allows me to treat patients, here in the office, with a simple 30-minute, non-surgical procedure with little or no down-time.” His practice is focused on providing services to treat most major gynecological problems without the need of major surgery or lengthy hospital stay. “This is the future of medicine,” he boasts. Dr. Weiss, along with partners Dr. Helen Spalding, Dr. Jose Rivas, Dr. Marion Lacombe, and Dr. Heather Christie, provide complete gynecological and obstetric care, including infertility, high-risk pregnancy, menopause management, and more.

or Dr. Simon Weiss, the health and wellness of his patients is always a top priority. He is committed to providing patients the best medical care possible. That is why he is always one of the first physicians to adopt cutting-edge technology, such as the da Vinci® Surgical System. da Vinci® is a breakthrough surgical technology designed to expand a surgeon’s capabilities. It provides a minimally invasive option for complex gynecological surgical cases such as hysterectomies, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, or removal of scar tissue in the pelvis. “da Vinci® allows me to do certain procedures laparoscopically that before had to be done with an open incision,” explains Dr. Simon Weiss, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. “This significantly improves patient recovery.” Dr. Weiss has found great success using da Vinci® to perform hysterectomies. Not only does the state-of-the-art technology offer him, as a surgeon, greater precision and control, but patients have significantly less pain and a faster recovery. “Traditionally, after a radical hysterectomy a patient spent four days in the hospital, now they stay just one night,” says Dr. Weiss. “It used to take about a month to recover, now it’s generally less than two weeks. Some patients are even back to work in four days.” This is because da Vinci® allows doctors to perform complex procedures and major surgery through the smallest incisions. It was originally introduced for cardiovascular surgery, but now is used primarily by urologists to perform prostatectomies. Dr. Weiss is one of a few gynecologists using da Vinci® to perform benign (not cancer) surgery. One of the reasons there are a limited number of surgeons using this device is because the training is extensive. Dr. Weiss underwent special training to learn how to operate the da Vinci® Surgical System. It provides surgeons with enhanced visualization (including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view of the surgical site), increased precision and better control than traditional laparoscopic surgery. “The robotic arms actually flex just like human hands, providing greater control,” explains Dr. Weiss. “Sitting at the console I control the system, which translates my hand movements into precise movements of the tiny instruments inside the patient’s body.” He is quick to point out that although this is often referred to as robotic surgery, it is not automated. The surgeon controls every aspect of the surgery. According to Dr. Weiss, “I am still making every single movement and every single cut. da Vinci® is simply a tool.” Another tool he is using to better care for his patients is the HALO Breast Pap Test. Dr. Weiss was the first physician in our area to introduce this revolutionary risk assess-

hiitake is a pure-bred Pug. He recently celebrated his 10th birthday. He hosted a very nice party and lots of his canine friends came by to enjoy doggie treats. Shiitake has a sparkling personality. He loves everyone, and everyone loves him. He is super friendly, amazingly smart, and a big part of the family. He loves to cook with his Daddy. He especially enjoys his job as food quality control manager in the kitchen – ensuring the quality by begging to taste each item as it is prepared! No one can resist his little Pug face, and his adorable expressions. His best friend is a Shepherd-Labrador mix named “Beagles” who lives next door. His favorite toy is his “squirrelly.” He was last seen snuggling up on the couch. He has known only love and kindness his whole life.

Connections as a Measure of Success By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC
A
ugust is a very important month in South Florida, especially for our busy families. The school year brings demands for structure, hard work, and individual achievement, often pushing aside family time and togetherness. As a result one popular theme of distress I hear is “How do I get it all done?”; “How do I keep up?”; or “How do I hang in there?” When success is defined solely as task completion and goal achievement the family may become disconnected and competitive. While these may be very efficient ways of assessing the success of a product or company, they fall short in determining the true success of a family. We need balance to succeed as a family. This balance comes from our connection to ourselves, our families and our world. The peace, joy and harmony we feel in the summer come from the connections and memories we create with our families and cherish for years afterwards. During the school year parents, children and families are pulled in different directions. There are countless demands placed on them by teachers, coaches, bosses, and other outside influences. The to-do lists get longer, the email boxes become full and, chances are, everything is not going to get done.
You see, in order to wipe your to-do list clean, respond to every email and get “everything done,” you would need many more hours in the day. So how do you deal with the stress, guilt, and pressure of this pseudo-perfectionism? You can begin by measuring success differently. Successful families and individuals are better measured in terms of connections. In Dr. Steve Covey’s best selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families, he outlines the following “Action Tips” to meet the challenge of building family connections: 1. Plan regular family times - Plan a weekly time when the whole family is expected to be together. This time can be for teaching or sharing important life concepts; listening to family members and solving problems; or attending entertaining or cultural events together. It can also be a religious mass or service followed by a meal time. It will be an expectation that everyone will be present. Family times are precious connection opportunities. 2. Schedule regular one-on-one bonding times with each family member - “What is important to your child must be important to you!” Have weekly dates with your spouse and individual times with each child, where they decide the activity. 3. Build Family Traditions - Children love traditions such as special meals, celebrating birthdays or holidays, family vacations, or working on family histories or newsletters. If you are feeling burdened by the quest for perfection, contact Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Parent Coordinator and Mediator, at A Place for Growth in Weston. She can be reached at (954) 384-9373 or visit her website at www.APlaceforGrowth.com.

uch has been made over the past several years regarding the healing potential of stem cells. This has not been without some controversy, and that controversy has been related to the use of embryonic stem cells. The harvest of these cells results in the destruction of an embryo, and thus have not been used in clinical applications. Fortunately, another source of stem cells exists in adults. Stem cells can be taken from the bone marrow as well as another recently discovered source – fat! Liposuction is a particularly good means to acquire adult derived stem cells, and you get the simultaneous benefit of improving your body contour as we acquire the tissues needed to process. Stem cells have been purported to enhance the survival of fat grafts, improve the quality of damaged skin and enhance the thickness of skin and soft tissues. Most notably, they have been employed in the creation of organs, heart valves and blood vessels in the laboratory – potentially serving as a cellular “fountain of youth.” Plastic surgery has already adopted the technology and is actively researching its effects. However, the marketing of these “techniques” has progressed far beyond the current scientific understanding. One of the new catch phrases for plastic surgery is “stem cell facelift.” This label is a bit of a misnomer. The phrase “stem cell facelift” makes it sound as if simply by injecting stem cells into your face, this will give the effects of a facelift - smooth skin, facial fullness, less wrinkles. There are a few problems with this so-called stem cell facelift. First, some plastic surgeons are using the phrase to describe the traditional procedure of fat grafting to the face. Fat grafting involves removing fat from one area of your body through liposuction and then injecting this fat into another area. To truly earn the title of a stem cell facelift, the cells need to be extracted from the fat with special methods. These stems cells are then concentrated and then added to new fat. This new fat, which is now more concentrated with stem cells because it has its original stem cells plus the added stem cells, is then injected into the face. There are some plastic surgeons who are advertising that they perform stem cell facelifts, but they are not isolating the stem cells. An uninformed person will not know the difference. The second problem is that even if your stem cells are extracted and added to fat, there is no evidence other than anecdotal claims to support anti-aging effects. Injecting the fat itself will plump up the areas it’s injected into. It’s the equivalent of blowing air into a wrinkled, deflated balloon; the volume of fat itself smoothes out wrinkles and increases facial fullness. These effects are not necessarily because of the stem cells. Stem cells alone cannot be injected into your face and be expected to turn back the hands of time. In summary, beware of plastic surgeons who need to use marketing hype such as “stem cell facelift” to attract business. What does the future hold? It is likely that we will be able to inject stem cells in your IV which will be targeted to the area of concern and then help your body rebuild itself with a new heart muscle or liver, kidney, spinal cord, or even breast. Stay tuned for the future, but, beware of “snake oil” salesmen selling it before it’s ripe. To schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Messa, please call 954-659-7760.
