lthough you may have been unaware that the management of our publications changed in May 2010, you probably noticed the gradual improvements in presentation, layout and content made throughout the year. We provide the only source of relevant community and school news for many of our readers, and the feedback has been extremely positive. In addition to the established Our City Weston and Davie Town Times magazines, we introduced two new publications, the Pines Miramar Town Times and the Plantation Town Times. Now our award-winning, local community news magazines arrive every month in 80,000 mail boxes across Southwest Broward County. In addition, all of our publications are available online at www.ourcityweston.com. I would like to thank our readers and customers, as well as our dedicated staff, for making this success possible. Here’s to another successful year to come. Sincerely,

Chiropractic? Why Not? Dear Friend, want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few.
I
“A Doctor’s Confession toWest Broward”
Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/11) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $35. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and
consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOU THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT. Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Nyrie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Pines Family Chiropractic and it’s at 9841 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. Our phone number is 954-435-4380. Call Jessica for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. community news Miramar Turns Handbags into Cash By Debby Teich
R
esidents recently dusted off their “gently used” and new handbags and gave them to the City of Miramar for its annual fundraising effort. The City sold the merchandise at two public sales events and donated the proceeds to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is the second year that the City of Miramar has consolidated its fundraising efforts into one charity. Last year the City raised funds for the United Way. This year, five charities requested help and the City randomly selected the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Next year, it will focus its efforts on a different charity. “There are so many organizations that need volunteers to donate their time and money,” said
Paul Bennett, senior human resources analyst. “I am happy to be part of an effort that raises money to help find a cure for leukemia and lymphoma.” The City collected more than 330 bags, which ranged from generic to designer labels like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Coach and Chanel. City employees volunteered their time for the sale, along with volunteers from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They cleaned and stuffed the handbags with paper and then added a price sticker that ranged from $2 to $25. On May 18, Mayor Lori C. Moseley presented a check for $1,000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at the City Commission meeting. For information, visit www.ci.miramar.fl.us.

community news Pembroke Pines Celebrates the Royal Wedding By Debby Teich
A
s thousands packed the streets of London to celebrate the wedding of Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29, millions around the world celebrated the event with royal-themed parties. A group of Pembroke Pines residents joined in the fun at the Pembroke Pines Community Center. Tickets for the Royal Tea sold out quickly. Dressed in their finest hats and gloves, the women sat at tables set with flowers, laced cloths and fine china. As the Royal Wedding played on a large television, royal servers wearing tiaras served steaming pots of tea, pastries and delicious tea sandwiches. Teachers Christian and Nancy Schneider took the day off to celebrate and treated the group to a very special moment. Christian wore his Black Watch tartan with a primitive style Kilt, and his wife Nancy wore white lace. As the couple stood in front of a photo of the Royal couple kissing, they gave each other their own “royal kiss” while guests sang God Save the Queen. Four lucky guests at each table received an antique lace hankie or chocolate covered teaspoon. Everyone had a chance to win one of two donated tea baskets. The Royal Tea is just one of the many trips and special events offered on a regular basis at the Pembroke Pines Community Center. There are quarterly breakfasts, self improvement classes, educational classes, health classes and support programs presented by area professionals and more. The Center offers adults 18 and older an opportunity to meet new people, build a support network, find information, read a book or shoot some pool.

pproximately 50,000 people attended the 11-day Pembroke Pines Fair to help celebrate the City’s 51st birthday and raise money for its charter school system. The family event was held at the City Center and had something for everyone, including a carnival, concerts, entertainment and a variety of community and school based activities and events. “The weather was perfect, the crowds had a wonderful time and the cake donated by Publix was over the top,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “There were dozens of shows, great musical entertainment, family fun and terrific food. Does it get any better?” For information on upcoming Special Events, call 954-435-6525 or visit www.ppines.com.

Ask the Mayor Pembroke Pines
I
n this month’s article, I have decided to write about a cause that I feel personally very strong about. You may have seen the newspaper article regarding the Pantry of Broward, the agency that provides food for those in need, specifically among the senior population. Last year I was invited to a fundraiser for the Pantry that helped raise money for its food program with a huge production of “Dancing with the Stars.”
The Pantry of Broward provides food for the elderly in need. You can imagine how concerned I was when I received an email this year from the Pantry saying that the shelves were bare. All the effects of a bad economy have placed a heavy burden on this food program upon which many needy seniors depend. These are seniors who have to decide every day whether to take their medication or purchase food to survive. No one should have to make those kinds of decisions, least of all those who are supposed to be in their golden years.

I understand that the economy has been tough on all of us. However, what makes the City of Pembroke Pines an All American City is our enthusiasm to help those whose needs are greater than our own. I have issued a challenge to all of the elected officials in Broward County to match the volume of non-perishable food that we collect. I am encouraged by the children in our charter schools whose enthusiastic response is truly valuable to this food drive challenge. Here’s how it works, we will have food pantry boxes all over the City coordinating the pick up of food from you. Simply drop off canned goods; and non-perishable food items and we will make sure that the shelves are no longer empty. Donations can also include supermarket gift cards. Please be as generous as you can. As always if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at fortis@ppines.com, or call 954-435-6505.

here is a saying that, “to get something you want, you have to do something that you have never done.” We see prime examples of this in the athlete working out during the summer to be first string on his team, the student pursuing a degree for a new career, and the new small business owner working around the clock to make her business successful. Each of these efforts shows that once a goal is decided, the road toward accomplishing the goal will be something new and just as exciting. Miramar Mayor The goal of your City Commission is to secure the best posLori C. Moseley sible delivery of services to our residents especially under these current demanding economic conditions. The road we travel on has been challenging and not easy. While many cities have been cutting back on services to their residents and minimizing their efforts, Miramar has boldly decided to move forward. We work to carry on the spirit of our motto where we are “The Center of Everything.” The motto has provided us with direction and steers our efforts to securing those activities and services that best meet our residents’ needs. Through the initiatives of a recent Visioning Session, your City Commission and staff will be embarking on major projects that will bring companies, athletic events, and special events to our City. Other projects include making residents aware of all the services that the City provides that can help in improving their quality of life. When the economy began to negatively impact governments, many felt that there was only one way to go: cut back and scale down services. Miramar decided to take a different and novel approach. Instead of reacting to the economy, we decided to be pro-active and address the issues head on. We knew we couldn’t change the economy, but we could change how we reacted to it. We decided that it would not define us as a city. It is our belief that the best of intentions does not matter unless it is followed by action. The actions that your City Commission will undertake will reflect our one goal of securing the best possible delivery of services to our residents. legally speaking How Your Child Can Avoid Being Bitten By A Dog By Howard Citron
D
og bite cases really hit home, especially when a cherished pet dog bites a child. According to the Centers for Disease and Control, 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year. And, of that, one in five dog bites results in injuries that require medical attention. Unfortunately, children ages 5 to 9 years rate highest for dog bite related injuries. As a personal injury attorney, I have had my share of unfortunate dog bite cases. In almost every case, it was the first time that the dog bit a person. In almost every single case, the dog owner was surprised that the dog bit a human being because it had no aggressive history and had never bitten anyone else in the past. This topic is especially personal to me because I am a father who is very protective of my children. Most parents don’t know the dangers associated with dogs. Unfortunately, I see it all the time. Many times, when families are walking in the neighborhood or at a park, parents permit their kids to walk up to dogs and pet them. I don’t allow that because I know first hand what a first bite can do. I have witnessed injuries that still resonate in my mind.
I am asking that all Moms and Dads in South Florida be extremely cautious with your children around dogs. Even if the dog’s owner tells you that his/her dog is great with kids and has never bitten anyone before, do not let your children pet dogs that they do not know. The Centers for Disease and Control has offered safety tips specifically geared towards parents and children to prevent them from being bitten by dogs. Please share them with your kids. They are as follows: ▸▸ Do not approach an unfamiliar dog. ▸▸ Do not run from a dog or scream. ▸▸ Remain motionless when approached by an unfamiliar dog. ▸▸ If knocked over by a dog, roll into a ball and lie still. ▸▸ Do not play with a dog unless supervised by an adult. ▸▸ Immediately report stray dogs or dogs displaying unusual behavior. ▸▸ Avoid direct eye contact with a dog. ▸▸ Do not disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. ▸▸ Do not pet a dog without allowing it to see and sniff you first. ▸▸ If bitten, immediately report the bite to the police and/or animal control .

cover story Tooth Options Helps Patients Achieve a Beautiful Smile By Debby Teich
A
smile is one of the first things many people notice when they meet someone. Dr. Jamie Greear, owner of Tooth Options Inc., is helping patients achieve the smile they have always dreamed of, while maintaining optimum dental health. She applies her unique blend of artistic and technical skills, as well as the latest technology and materials available today, to create durable, functional and dramatically beautiful teeth. She has a friendly, fresh approach to dentistry and works closely with all of her patients to earn their trust and put them at ease so that fear or lack of time does not prevent them from achieving a beautiful and healthy smile. “A beautiful smile is a sign of good health, confidence and happiness,” said Dr. Greear. As a graduate of Nova Southeastern University, College of Dental Medicine, Dr. Greear received first-rate training in all aspects of general dentistry and cosmetic surgery. She offers a comprehensive list of services, including crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers, bonding, implant restoration, dentures, partials, extractions, Invisalign (clear braces), tooth colored fillings (bondings), ZOOM teeth whitening, root canals and all other types of dentistry. The office treats patients of all ages so the entire family can get a cleaning or treat a problem on the same day and the kids always leave with a prize from the treasure chest. The staff is gentle, efficient, highly skilled and well-trained in comforting anxious patients. Dr. Greear spends time with each of her patients to make sure they are educated, savDeputy Jay Greear, Dr. Jamie Greear’s father ing them money and potential discomfort in the future. She teaches them how to brush and floss properly so that their teeth stay healthy and recommends sealants and fluoride for most patients. “Nowadays, there is no need for dentures,” said Dr. Greear. “If patients take proper care of their teeth, they can expect to keep them for a lifetime. It is never too late to initiate a good dental routine to maintain optimal health.” Tooth Options offers the latest in technology. Patients can relax as they watch the flat screen televisions in the treatment rooms and get a massage from the dental chair. The office uses digital x-rays, which reduce radiation and produce an immediate picture. Patients never receive silver or mercury fillings. Dr. Greear hand selects a shade that matches each tooth so the filling is nearly invisible. Since natural teeth have many shade variations, she sends crowns to a state-of-the-art lab for precise color matching and fit. Dr. Greear understands the importance of providing services to her patients in the most comfortable, stress-free manner and has perfected the art of dental anesthesia. In many cases, she uses a topical gel placed around the gums, avoiding the injections that so many people fear. She also offers nitrous oxide to relax those patients that request it. For those procedures that require an injection, she uses Oraverse anesthesia which cuts the amount of time a patient stays numb in half. Dr. Jamie Greear ensures that her patients always receive the latest, most effective and most esthetically pleasing treatments possible. Many of Dr. Greear’s

patients have used Invisalign in lieu of traditional braces. Invisalign uses 3-D modeling software and cuttingedge manufacturing technology to provide a clear, removable solution for straightening teeth. It is effective at treating a wide variety of orthodontic issues including crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites and more. It is typically more comfortable for patients and is not visible when they talk and smile. Dr. Greear recommends ZOOM Whitening for those patients whose teeth have stained or darkened due lifestyle choices or age. In only one hour, ZOOM gets teeth as white as possible, lifting stains from coffee, tea, cola, red wine, smoking and more. Since Dr. Greear can isolate the gums and tissue, she is able to use a solution that is stronger Dr. Jamie Greear than over-the-counter products and achieves the results much more quickly. Dr. Greear’s patients speak for themselves. Robert Wallace had chipped, crowded discolored teeth and dark crown margins at the gum line. Dr. Greear gave him porcelain veneers and an all porcelain crown to give him a bright white straight smile without braces. Now his teeth look like new. “I’ve been embarrassed about my teeth for a very long time and put off getting them fixed due to anxiety,” said Wallace. “After

my experience with Dr. Greear, the only thing I regret is not doing it years ago. I love my new smile!” Roy Mikus had a very deep cavity that started hurting while he was vacationing in Florida. Dr. Greear was able to fit him in the same day he called. “I was able to get in last minute and was treated painlessly so I could enjoy my vacation,” said Mikus. “I’ve never had such a gentle, compassionate and skilled dentist before and I would highly recommend Dr. Greear. Her staff is very down to earth and made me feel very comfortable. All in all, it was a great experience!” Dr. Greear’s father has always been a tremendous support for her. “I feel that I owe much of my success to my father whose determination and encouragement has guided me through the years.” To say happy Father’s Day to all of the wonderful fathers out there, including her own, she is offering all fathers a FREE fluoride treatment this month. C
hapel Trail Elementary is always looking for ways to enrich the lives of its students. In May, teachers and students spent several weeks working on an event to support the arts that included an Author’s Visit, Literary Fair and Multicultural Show. The event kicked off with a visit from John Becker, author of non-fiction books like Wild Cats Past & Present, Frenemies for Life and Mugambi’s Journey. Becker conducted several assemblies so that all of the school’s students could participate. John Becker autographs Sophia Barth’s book. He showed a video of his adventures during an African safari and taught the students about different kinds of wildlife. He explained how some Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are helping to save cheetahs in the wild - the premise for Frenemies for Life. He also talked about his unusual career path and reminded the students that anyone can become an author. “Reading opens so many doors for the students and allows their imaginations to run wild,” said Liz Grafe, media specialist who coordinated the event. Becker returned later that night for the Literary Fair so parents and students could purchase autographed copies of his books. They also had an opportunity to see the literature projects on display in the media center. Kindergarteners read Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown and kept journals about the travels of their own Flat Sanleys. First grade students read Princess Hyacinth (The Surprising Tale of a Girl Who Floated) by Florence
Parry Heide and made kites with the Princess on them. In second grade, students researched animal habitats and created dioramas. Third graders read Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White and built barns with the animals and characters. Fourth graders made 3D models of books they read; developed story circles and wrote about famous African Americans. In fifth grade, students linked subjects like math and science to literature with a variety of projects. The event continued a few days later when hundreds of families visited the school to watch 450 students display their talents in the Multicultural show. They wore costumes and presented songs and dances from countries throughout the world, including China, Mexico, Egypt, Italy, Colombia, India, Cuba and many others. “During the performance, the kids had an opportunity to embrace cultural differences,” said Grafe.

legally speaking How to Avoid Deficiency Judgments after Foreclosure and Short Sale By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
A
s terrible as it may seem to lose your home through a foreclosure, most people believe that after the foreclosure, their biggest financial headache is behind them. However, former homeowners may still be on the hook if there’s a difference between what they owed on the mortgage and what the bank sold the house at the foreclosure auction. This is called a “deficiency judgment.” Deficiency judgments are ticking time bombs that can explode years after borrowers lose their homes. A lender also has the right to seek a deficiency judgment against homeowners who convinced their bank to approve a short sale and even in cases where the bank takes back the property through a deed in lieu of foreclosure. Releasing title to the bank does not always wipe out the debt. A mortgage has two parts: a pledge of collateral (represented by the home), and a promise to pay the loan under the promissory note. Lenders may release property liens to facilitate short sales without releasing borrowers from their obligations to pay. Lenders or collection agencies may wait until debtors have recovered financially before seeking a deficiency judgment. In Florida, the bank can wait up to 5 years to seek a deficiency judgment. Once the court grants a deficiency judgment, the lender has 20 years to collect it! Moreover, the lender can request your financial records, garnish your wages, repossess your vehicles, and even freeze your bank accounts. In order to short-circuit lenders’ attempts to seek a deficiency judgment in the future, it is imperative that after the home is sold at foreclosure auction, the former homeowner immediately file for bankruptcy protection. Since the deficiency judgment would be considered an unsecured debt, it will be forever discharged through the bankruptcy proceeding and the bank could never collect it. In “short sale” or deed in lieu scenarios, most lenders are willing to release the deficiency judgment amount. However, many borrowers may not be aware that they have to ask for such a release. If you are pursuing a short sale or a deed in lieu of foreclosure, be sure to ask the bank to release you from any further obligation or deficiency under the mortgage. If the bank refuses, bankruptcy proceedings can also avoid any liability after a short sale or return of your property to the bank through a deed in lieu. A more detailed explanation of the different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure, and key foreclosure defense strategies are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home,” which is available in English and Spanish. Contact the Arcia Law Firm today and mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine to receive a FREE copy of this DVD (which retails for $39.95 plus S/H). The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of homeowners in our community in foreclosure and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you just received a foreclosure summons, or if you just lost your home through a foreclosure and wish to avoid a deficiency judgment, please contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com, or our blog page www.fight4yourhome.org. school news PPCS Teachers are Favorites By Debby Teich
S
tudents in the Pembroke Pines Charter School System believe that two of their teachers stand out from the rest. Science teacher Kimberly Scarola at the PPCMS Central Campus and fourth grade gifted/high achiever teacher Keren Surowitz at the PPCES West Campus were named local winners in the Barnes and Noble “My Favorite Teacher Contest.” Both teachers received ten Sterling children’s books, as well as some planning materials. Scarola was also selected as a regional winner and received a NOOK and $500 gift card compliments of Barnes and Noble. Students nominated their favorite teacher by writing essays, poems or thank you letters that express how their teacher has influenced their life or why they appreciate and admire their teacher. Entries were judged on the compelling nature of the teacher’s qualities, the sincerity of the student’s appreciation and the quality of expression and writing. The teachers were recognized at Barnes and Noble stores on April 15th. Scarola was honored that she won at both the store and regional level. “The bookstore gift certificate and Nook will come in very handy with my continuing university studies,” said Scarola. Sixth grade student Shreeya Singh was excited that her essay was selected. “I wrote an essay about Mrs. PPCMS Central Campus teacher Kim Scarola explaining why she is my favorite teacher Scarola and Shreeya Singh, who submitted a poem about her favorite teacher and she won!” Scarola’s efforts have been recog-
nized many times in the past. In 2005, she received the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year award from FAU’s College of Education and the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year award from the FAU COE Teacher Education Department. The next year, she received the 2006 FAU Outstanding Secondary Reading Teacher Award. During the 2007-2008 school year, she was named Teacher of the Year for the Central Middle School. PPCMS West Campus teacher Keren Surowitz with a few of the Winning is not new for Surowitz students who submitted poems and stories about her (l to r) Henry either. Earlier this year, she was Bu, John Wentzel, Keren Surowitz, Leah Kapela, and Avery Nowak named the Teacher of the Year for the West Elementary School Campus. Students in her current class, as well as last year’s class nominated her for the Barnes and Noble contest. “I am always looking for ways to make my class fun and exciting so that the students will want to come to school,” said Surowitz. “I love everything about my job, especially the opportunity to help my students experience success on a daily basis. I am flattered that my students chose to write about me.” Surowitz says her students have already started checking out the books that she won. For information, visit www.pinescharter.net

legally speaking Be Realistic By Evan Baron, esq.
W
hy do some cases seem to settle so effortlessly and others seem to be a constant battle? There are a number of reasons why this seems to occur. The most common reason is that either one or both of the parties have entered the negotiations with unrealistic expectations. They think that they are entitled to more than the law will provide. This is especially difficult for someone to accept when they feel they have been wronged by the other party and there should be some punishment handed down to compensate him or her. This however is a no fault state and as such, for the most part, someone’s wrongdoing or perceived wrongdoing is never taken into consideration. Why do people have unrealistic expectations? It could be based upon a number of different factors. The most common reason is that some people are thinking emotionally. It becomes difficult to grasp certain legal concepts when someone is either very mad or very angry. The law as it is explained to them doesn’t seem fair and so they want to continue the battle. Sometimes they are correct, the law is not always fair. It is however the law and you can for the most part be assured that a judge will in fact follow the law in ruling in your case. Sometimes a person can be influenced by either friends or family members who don’t understand the law but attempts to advise a person nonetheless. I am often amazed how some individuals will give more credibility to advice given by a neighbor down the street than an attorney they are paying money to for his/her advice. Sometimes, unfortunately, people want to hear only what they want to hear. Individuals who are contemplating a divorce often research the internet and suddenly become “experts.” There are many on line sites that are educational and can assist in understanding the process. There are however many sites that have incorrect information and can distort a persons expectations. It is also important to remember that each state has different laws and therefore if you are researching laws in North Carolina it may not have anything to do with what you can anticipate in Florida. The most important thing to remember is that negotiations to reach a successful settlement require some “give and take.” Nobody will settle for “their worst day in court.” That certainly how attorneys weigh the value of a settlement offer. If the offer is worse than what you might expect form a judge, then there is really no reason to settle. If however, both parties understand that a settlement means giving up something to receive something, and they can put aside their emotions, a settlement should be able to be reached. It is important to remember, just like it takes two to tango, it takes two reasonable people to settle a case.

hiropractic is 100% natural and the second largest health profession in America. It is one of the safest health professions proven by the low cost of malpractice insurance for chiropractors. Plain and simple chiropractic works! Some of the values and benefits of chiropractic care include: ▸▸ Reduces/eliminates pain (headaches, low back pain, neck pain and more) ▸▸ Makes you feel great and improves relationships ▸▸ Increases energy levels and flexibility ▸▸ Improves posture ▸▸ Saves you money ▸▸ Prevents the need to take medicines ▸▸ Prevents surgeries and arthritis ▸▸ Relieves irritated nerves ▸▸ Improves job performance and production ▸▸ Improves sports performance ▸▸ Improves overall function of your body, including the central nervous system ▸▸ Helps car accident victims recover naturally Chiropractic can help you and your family regain and maintain good health. Chiropractic works on the most important system of your body - your Central Nervous System (brain, spine and nerves). Your brain, the healing energy source, sends all electrical signals down your spine. Your spine then braches into 31 pairs of spinal nerves that control all of your cells, tissues, muscles and organs, as well as all other 8 systems (immune, muscular, digestive, circulatory, etc.). Your spine is the direct connection between your brain and body. When your spinal bones are in proper alignment, there is clear, 100% communication between your brain and body, allowing your body to function as its best. Life causes spinal bones to go out of place and irritate your nerves and spinal cord, called Subluxations. Subluxations are a serious and dangerous health condition that cause blockage, interference between your brain and body. When your brain and body connection has interference, your body accumulates disease and malfunctions. This typically causes no pain at first (excluding accidents or injuries). Once enough damage accumulates, pain and symptoms are typically end results. Chiropractic simply by hand realigns the spine naturally, gently reconnecting you to your healing source - your brain. Investing in your central nervous system is the highest priority action step for your health you can take. Established in 1995, Pines West Chiropractic is the first chiropractic office in Pembroke Pines West of I-75. Pines West Chiropractic has digital x-rays and a team of four doctors who love what they do. We have 2 massage therapists (male and female) and a friendly well-trained staff with a state-of-the-art office. My purpose in life is to help as many people as possible regain and maintain good health naturally for a lifetime. Skin Cancer – The Importance of Early Detection By Tamara Lior, MD, Chair, Department of Dermatology at Cleveland Clinic Florida
D
id you know that your skin is your body’s largest organ? It is true. And while we generally focus only on making our skin look as good as possible, it is even more important to keep the skin healthy. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, highly skilled dermatologists can help you achieve skin that is as beautiful as it is healthy. It is surprising, but many people are unaware of how common skin cancer is. Over 1 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year and about 20 percent of Americans will develop some form of skin cancer within their lifetimes. Even more troubling, melanoma is the second most common form of cancer in women between the ages of 20 and 29. When detected early, however, skin cancer is very curable. And because skin cancer is readily seen and easy to diagnose, it is vital to have your skin checked from head-to-toe by a trained dermatologist on a yearly basis.

The ABC’s of Skin Cancer
Although only a physician can conclusively diagnose skin cancer, there are warning signs you should be aware of. If you notice a mole with asymmetry, border irregularities, color variations or diameter greater than the size of a pencil eraser, it is imperative to get it checked out as soon as possible.

Tax Talk Nonresident Alien Business Ownership By Jacqueline F. Rodriguez, CPA
A
re nonresident aliens (NRA) able to open their own business in the U.S.? Absolutely; there are different ways to register businesses and one of them is known as a Limited Liability Company (similar a Sociedad de Responsabilidad Limitada). Upon registration of a new Limited Liability Company (LLC) and being named as a member of the company, foreigners are allowed by the IRS to register the business and the LLC is assigned an employer identification number. You obtain an employer identification number by completing the form SS-4 (Application for employer identification number). The form requires you to disclose the number of LLC members, business address, type of entity, reason for applying, date business started, and principal activity of your business. Depending on the number of members, the IRS may follow the default filing requirements for annual tax returns unless a classification election is filed in a timely manner. If there is only one LLC member, the nonresident alien (NRA) will be allowed to request an individual taxpayer identification number (Itin). The Itin will be used to report the business activity in the United States with a Nonresident Income Tax Return (form 1040NR) or U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (form 1040). If there are more than two LLC members, each NRA will be allowed to request their own Itin. The Itin will be disclosed in the company tax return form 1065. The Itin will be used to report their participation in business activities based on the member’s percentage of ownership in the LLC. As with a single LLC member, in a multiplemember LLC each member is required to file an individual tax return based on the share of tax liability as reported in the K-1 schedule of the company tax return.

The Itin is acquired by filing the application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification number (form w-7) along with basic information such as the reason you are submitting the form, current name and name at birth (if different), applicant’s mailing address, foreign address, birth information, and other information related to citizenship, U.S. visa number and expiration, and passport number and expiration. In addition to the application, you must submit supporting documents to establish foreign status and Identity. The instructions on the W-7 form allow you to submit a notarized or certified copy of a valid passport, in which case no further documentation needs to be sent as this provides foreign status and Identity. In the case of a single LLC member, it is advisable that the NRA filing form 1040NR also files estimated tax payments on a quarterly-basis by mailing form 1040-ES (NR) along with the Itin to the Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 1300, Charlotte, NC, 28201-1300. In the case of two or more NRA members, the LLC is in effect the withholding agent in charge of backing up withholdings for each member and required to send this information to the IRS by the given due date. As long as the NRAs comply with IRS codes and regulations they are free to do business in the United States regardless of their status. dining out On The Menu Cafe & Bistro Offers European Flair to Great Cuisine By Julie Levin
T
ucked away in an office and retail shopping center in Davie, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, sits a new eatery that promises to give diners a taste of French and international cuisines at its finest. On The Menu, a Gourmet European Cafe and Bistro, offers something never before seen in Davie. “We
of hot and cold drinks including espresso, macchiato, cappuccino, cafe latte, cafe frappe, breakfast tea, herbal and green teas, sodas and more. The casual space is done in a modern style, with vibrant hues and colorful prints on the walls. Soft French music plays in the background to complete the setting. But for those looking for a meal, On The Menu is a true gem. They offer mostly natural foods with a focus on being as organic as possible, all made from scratch in their 75-seat eatery. The menu is French bistro, with a nod to Mediterranean cuisine. The kitchen is under the command of Italian-born chef Giuseppe DeRobertis, a Master Chef who studied French cuisine in France and then was a chef in Montreal in French restaurants for years. On the Menu Café & Bistro opens at 8 a.m. every day except Sunday (they are hoping to open soon on Sunday), and diners can find themselves sitting down to specialties such as French toast made with croissants, Liege sugar waffles, egg dishes, baked goods, crepes or a croque madame sandwich, a blend of ham, Swiss, béchamel sauce and a sunny side-up egg. Freshly squeezed orange juice, coffees and teas complete the meal. For lunch they offer a tantalizing menu of panini’s, sandwiches, burgers, salads and soups, including authentic French Onion soup that is available every day. There is also a full array of salads, which are made entirely from scratch. “The food is made when the customer orders it. Nothing is pre-made,” said Williamson.

are a bistro, cafe, pastry shop and coffeehouse,” said Pascal Sanchez-Santini, who coowns On The Menu Café & Bistro with his wife Victoria Williamson. The idea for the concept behind On The Menu is due in large part to Pascal SanchezSantini, who was born and raised in Paris, France and is of Italian and Spanish descent. It was his idea to combine a café with a bistro along with a pastry shop. He and Victoria saw a real lack of French restaurants in Broward, they can point to just a few. They decided that Davie and the surrounding cities, with its melting pot of cultures, was ready for a taste of quality French and international food at affordable prices. Located at 4801 S. University Drive in the Atrium Center, On The Menu offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with mouth-watering breads, pastries and coffees. “We have great food, quick friendly service, and an impeccably clean kitchen under the guidance of Master Chef Giuseppe,” said Williamson, who many food lovers will remember from Churchill’s, the upscale fine dining restaurant she built and ran in Cooper City for many years. Newcomers to On The Menu may first be happily distracted by the rows of tempting authentic French pastries delivered fresh daily from Croissan’Time that beckons when they first walk in the door. There is an array of fruit tarts, Napoleons, éclairs, gorgeous cakes, mousse cakes, cookies, petit fours, baked tarts and special occasion cakes. Many guests settle down into the white sofas near the entrance to relax and enjoy their treat while relaxing or Owners Pascal Sanchez-Santini and Victoria meeting clients. Their dinners are a true experience into international cuisines. Guests can start with an appetizer of Mozzarella Caprese, or Coquille St. Jacques Gratin, which features scallops and shrimp baked in a béchamel sauce, with bake mashed potatoes covered with cheese. For a traditional taste of French cuisine, try the escargot, duck confit or beef bourguignon served with tagliatelle or rack of lamb. There are also poultry, pork, and seafood dishes to choose from, as well as domestic and imported wines and beer. Both Victoria and Pascal invite South Floridians to come check out On The Menu and enjoy the ambiance of their European Cafe & Bistro. It is a great place to meet friends for any meal of the day, or for an afternoon treat of a scrumptious pastry with a specialty coffee. On the Menu Café & Bistro offers daily specials that you can eat-in or take-out. They also offer catering, cooking classes, and a “reality chef” class for the day, where guests can work and learn under the tutelage of a Master Chef. On the Menu Café & Bistro is located at 4801 S. University Drive, Davie at the main entrance of the Atrium Center just south of Griffin Road on the West side. They are open Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 10 p.m. They will be opening on Sunday’s soon. You can contact them at 954-680-7944 or email at contact@onthemenucafe.com. They are also online at www.onthemenucafe.com

it’s their business Miramar’s American Top Team Offers Programs for the Whole Family By Debby Teich
M
iramar’s American Top Team (ATT) offers programs for kids, men and women of all ages that want to get in shape and learn how to defend themselves. With over 1,000 members, it is one of the largest and most active Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) teams in the world. More than 50 of its members compete professionally in MMA, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Submission Grappling, Wrestling, and Muay Thai events all over the world. Owner David Moyal began training in Jiu Jitsu four years ago. He loved it so much that he decided to turn his passion into a business. He partnered with Head Instructor and Pro Fighter Wilson Gouveia and opened an ATT training facility in Pembroke Pines. “The level of training our students receive is unlike anywhere in the country,” said Moyal. “There are few places where students have an opportunity to train with someone as well known as Wilson Gouveia.” Word spread quickly and it was not long before they needed more space, so they moved to their current location at 12180 Miramar Parkway, in the Miramar Square Shopping Center. The 8,000 sq. ft. facility has brand new mats, heavy bags and equipment, as well as a cage and boxing ring. All of the students are instructed by a team of Olympic and World Champion Athletes who still actively compete. ATT Miramar offers a variety of martial arts programs designed to help children build confidence, boost self-esteem, as well as increase fitness levels and overall happiness. Gouveia enrolled in martial arts when he was 7-years-old and has tried almost every style of the sport. “Martial Arts have played such a big role in my life by helping me achieve my goals and keeping my life on the right track,” said Gouveia. “Martial Arts make and keep kids strong physically and mentally. All of our programs have been proven to positively influence attitude and behavior. We help teach students how to make healthy and positive choices for themselves by setting goals, providing role models, and implementing systems of discipline and authority.” Gouveia says that parents are often shocked when they see how quickly their children learn to bow on the mat, address adults and give a firm handshake. They also learn to listen, treat others with respect, and deal with bullies they might encounter in school. “We teach them that fighting is not answer and that what they learn in class should only be used as a last resort to solving problems,” continued Gouveia. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/ No-Gi Jiu Jitsu is one of ATT Miramar’s core training programs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport and a form of self-defense that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It is taught using the Gi/Kimono. Miramar BJJ students train live with Gouveia, who is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt. ATT Miramar also offers Muay Thai/ Striking classes, which teach techniques such as kicks, knees, elbows, punches, and clinch work. These classes incorporate elements of boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai to train the student in mental as well as physical conditioning. Many of the top Muay Thai and Boxing athletes train at ATT Miramar. For those interested in learning a little of everything, Mixed Martial Arts classes utilize a wide variety of disciplines techniques, including striking and grappling. This program blends the key elements of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Boxing and Physical Conditioning. It teaches students how to defend themselves in any situation. ATT Miramar also offers after school programs, as well as camps during summer, spring and winter break and early release days. This summer, kids ages 5 to 12 can beat the heat, Mon. to Fri., from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Every day, campers participate in games and activities, as well as an hour of martial arts. Three days a week, they take field trips to parks, museums, movies and more. During the school year, ATT Miramar picks up students from several elementary schools, including Dolphin Bay, Coconut Palm, Coral Cove and Somerset East. After the staff helps the kids with homework, they participate in a variety of activities, as well as one hour of martial arts. ATT Miramar also has many students who participate in the ATT FIT program to get in shape. “Many of our students used to belong to traditional gyms or worked out on their own,” said Moyal. “They found it difficult to stay motivated and ultimately fell back into their regular routines. Our classes are diversified and challenging and help them achieve the results they want. It is like they have their own personal trainer.” The classes combine Boxing, Kickboxing, Boot Camp and Weight Training for a total body workout that produces results. They are designed to leave students, from beginner to advanced, feeling stronger, empowered, and motivated. Call today for a free introductory lesson or fitness consultation. it’s their business Emilio’s BBQ and Catering Service Makes Entertaining Easy By Debby Teich
W
ith delicious food at great prices, Emilio’s BBQ and Catering Service makes entertaining easy. Emilio’s does it all - from set up to clean up – leaving clients with plenty of time to relax and enjoy their guests. It is the perfect way to host a birthday party, baby shower, quince, office party or summer barbeque. Emilio González grew up in Cuba where he worked a chef. When he moved to the United States, he brought all of his recipes with him. He got a job working for a party planning company, but could not stay away from his true passion. So he put his chef’s hat back on and opened Emilio’s BBQ and Catering Service. It did not take long before
$4.50 per person, you can feast on Emilio’s famous chicken or pork kabobs that come with peppers, sausage and onion, topped with either barbeque or “Mojo Criollo” sauce. If you cannot choose between chicken and pork, order “Emilio’s Combination” which has both. Other main courses include Barbeque Chicken, Wings, Steak, Seafood and special requests. Prices are for a group of 20 or more and include all of the paper goods, as well as a side item like salad, rice and beans, French fries, potato salad and more. Add drinks, extra sides and dessert for an additional fee. People often ask Emilio what makes his barbeque taste so good. “We start by selecting fresh, high quality meat and then marinating it with the perfect blend of seasonings, using recipes that have been passed down through the generations,” said Emilio. “We also cook it the old fashioned way using charcoal, which create a distinctive taste that is difficult to achieve with gas. Everything is barbequed at the event, not prepared in advance.” Emilio says that some of the biggest challenges are determining the right moment to put the food on the grill, when to turn it and how long to cook it. “It takes a lot of patience and experience to achieve the perfect barbeque meal,” said Emilio. “When people taste our food, they know it is ours.” For information, call 786-985-8655 or visit www.emiliosbbq.com.
Emilo’s earned the reputation as one of the best barbeques in South Florida. “I love everything about barbequing,” said Emilio. “I especially love to watch the expression on people’s faces as they take their first bite. Food is the way to most people’s hearts.” Whether the party is at a home, park, school or business, Emilio brings everything he needs and leaves the place spotless. He supplies the barbeque and servers (his family members) and makes all of the food to order. He can also supply tables; chairs; DJs; bar tenders; bounce houses; snow cone, popcorn and cotton candy machines and more. He has worked with gatherings that range from 20 guests to several hundred. “Our goal is to make things as easy as possible for our clients,” said Emilo. “They can leave the cooking and mess to us and just have fun.” Emilio’s catering prices are hard to beat. For only $4 per person, you can get hamburgers and hot dogs. For $4.50 per person, enjoy American-style Ribs, made with a traditional barbeque sauce or Cuban-style Ribs, topped with a “Mojo Criollo” sauce made of onions, garlic, oranges, mint leaves and a variety of herbs and spices. Boredom Plus Money Often Adds Up to Substance Abuse in Teens By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC
P
arents often want their children to feel safe, comfortable, and unrestricted with concerns about money, perhaps wanting to correct for a struggle that they once experienced in their own teenage years. There is a slippery slope, however, for many parents who indiscriminately dole out funds to their teens. Parents expect that their teens will be grateful, responsible, and will reciprocate by making good use of what is given to them. The opposite often occurs. Teens often become entitled and may then become resentful and demanding when they are not immediately gratified. This, in addition to the boredom that results from not having to work for what they want or need, can help set the stage for substance abuse. In a survey conducted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, measuring the impact of extra money, boredom, and stress on substance abuse in the teen population, researchers found that teens who receive $25 or more per week in allowance are nearly twice as likely to drink, smoke, and use illegal drugs. The survey also found that teens who are bored are 50 percent more likely to turn to these substances. A teen equates “getting high” with belonging to a group, being “cool” and daring, filling up empty time, socializing, easing painful self-consciousness, and escaping from problems. Alcohol, drugs, and accompanying high-risk behaviors like skipping school and shoplifting often provide immediate, temporary relief from problems for many teens.
The course is predictable. The user is curious and asks for or is offered a free serving of alcohol or drugs. If this results in a pleasurable experience, the user will move to recreational use on weekends, then to daily use. Teens with more money often have more access to a wider variety, higher potency, and larger quantity of substances. Once they have developed an addiction, they will stop at nothing and spare no expense to get what they need. Unfortunately, well meaning parents may be funding their addiction. As parents come into an awareness of a substance abuse problem, they may ask how it is possible that their teen could have slipped so far into trouble. What would drive anyone to such dangerous and criminal activity when everything, every material thing, has been provided? Research has proven that the teenage brain is not fully developed, particularly the portion of the brain that discriminates between what is an unsafe or safe decision. Teens tend to think that they are immortal and invulnerable, that they are immune from consequences, or that they will be miraculously rescued at the eleventh hour from disaster. The answer is, then, that these troubled teens do not think ahead at all. They are living in the moment and attempting to fill an inner emptiness. Adrenalin flows freely when stealing, sneaking, breaking laws, out-smarting authority, dealing with large amounts of money and getting high. Teens are in crisis long before they realize it and often long before their parents realize it. If you suspect or are aware that your teen is in trouble, call Alina Gastesi-de Armas, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor at A Place for Growth in Weston at (954) 384-9373 or visit her website at www.aplaceforgrowth.com. www.pinesmiramartowntimes.com

“Zoey”
oey is a 3-year-old Golden Retriever. Her favorite people are her family, including five teenage kids. Her favorite toy is a stuffed animal carcass, as she has removed all the stuffing. She enjoys watching the ducks, playing with the neighbor children and chasing lizards. She dislikes thunderstorms. She was last seen relaxing in the pool on her raft enjoying the afternoon breeze.
