3rd Northern Winter Wonderland - The City of Miramar will kick off the holiday season with a Northern Winter Wonderland Celebration, at 5:30 p.m., at the Miramar Town Center, 2300 Civic Center Place. There will also be musical entertainment and a special visit from Santa. Tickets are required for the snow area only and cost $4 for Pembroke Pines residents and $6 for non-residents. The holiday community service project is part of the annual City of Pembroke Pines Parks and Recreation and Fire Department Holiday Basket program. “Preschool age children are very impressionable,” said Holly Leon, City of Pembroke Pines Recreation Supervisor and Preschool Director. “By providing young children the opportunity to actively participate in the old time lesson that it is better to give than to receive, we can instill a pattern of thinking and help them to become community minded young adults.”

The community garden grew out of an initiative developed by the United States Conference of Mayors and was then implemented in Pembroke Pines by Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “A lot of energy and donated resources went into creating the community garden,” said Mayor Ortis. The City of Pembroke Pines Landscape Department and the Landscape Committee worked together for more than six months developing a plan of action for the garden. As the three-quarter acre lot was prepped, rocks and weeds were removed, potting soil was brought in and leveled, raised plant beds were built, a sprinkler system was installed, and 525 yards of mulch was laid. The Landscape Advisory board is still in the process of developing by-laws and working out some of the operational details. Once they have been established, a committee of volunteers will run the garden. Volunteers will also be needed year round to plant, weed, prune and water. The community garden is expected to open in January. Javier Lopez of Pembroke Pines plans to volunteer in the garden. ver six hundred people attended the City of Pembroke Pines Veterans Memorial dedication and unveiling ceremony at City Center on November 11. During the ceremony, Pastor Peter gave a moving benediction, Boy Scout Troop 224 led the Pledge of Allegiance, 14-year-old Cameron Wheeler sang God Bless the USA, the Pembroke Pines Charter School West Campus band performed the Armed Forces Medley “Hymn to the Fallen” and the theme from Jag, and Robert Young performed “Taps”. Guest Speakers included C on g r e s s wom a n Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Major General Charles T. Cleveland US Army. “The City of Pembroke Pines is proud to be home to this Veterans Memorial, a beautiful tribute to the men and women who have and continue to serve in the

he 14th Annual City of Pembroke Pines Police Athletic League (PAL) Pasta Dinner, held at the Southwest Focal Point Senior Center in Pembroke Pines, delivered exactly what it promised – a delicious meal, great entertainment, terrific raffle prizes and celebrity servicers! It also raised $3,300 to help support the Pembroke Pines PAL’s year round programming and special events. Celebrity dignitaries helped serve the pasta, meatballs, garlic bread, salad, dessert, coffee and soft drinks. Some of the volunteers included PAL Board Member Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Vice Mayor Iris Siple, Commissioner Carl Shechter and Commissioner Jack McCluskey, as well as PAL Board Members Police Chief Dan Giustino, Assistant Chief Kenneth Hall and Captain Bryan Davis. Members of the Saint Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church Knights of Columbus Council # 11410 donated and prepared the delicious meal. Members of the Pembroke Pines PAL displayed their boxing and tae kwon do skills, including a very moving demonstration of synchronized moves to the National Anthem. Pembroke Pines PAL is a recreational and educational oriented juvenile crime prevention program which relies heavily on athletics and educational activities to create better relations between police officers and the youth in the community. It has held classes in leadership training, boxing, tae kwon do, basketball, computer learning. It also offers summer and spring camps. PAL is funded through donations, grants and fundraisers.

ach time her family grows, Shannon Evans-Riley of Pembroke Pines doesn’t think twice about where she wants to deliver her newest bundle of joy. All three of her children, Kayla, 6, Alyssa, 5, and 5-month old Emma, have been delivered by the staff at the Miami Maternity Center. The 30-year old mother of three says she wanted something other than the standard hospital and OB/GYN birthing experience. “I like the whole idea of natural birth and being able to have your family with you,” said Evans-Riley, who is married to husband Rivean. “The Miami Maternity Center is family-friendly, helpful and they are all very caring.” Evans Riley is one of a growing number of moms-to-be turning to the Miami Maternity Center. The dedicated staff of midwives, midwifery assistants and labor coaches at the Miami Maternity Center provide a birthing alternative to hundreds of families each year. Williams says they work off a simple philosophy; that everything they do is for the comfort, health, and well-being of their mommies and babies.It is a return to the traditional, non-invasive form of birth, where nature is allowed to take its course and the pregnancy and labor develops without intervention. If an indication arises that calls for intervention, only then do they intervene. Otherwise, it is all natural, with no pain medicines, epidurals or need to induce or speed up labor. “Women have been having babies for thousands of years. The body knows what to do,” said Williams. Among the many advantages they offer, moms come to the same place for their prenatal visits as they do for birth. When they come in labor, they’ll see the same staff that has been caring for them over many months, unlike many OB/GYN’s, who use a rotating on-call schedule. The connection becomes so unique, that in many instances, the moms stay in touch for many years. “Our clients become like family members,” said Williams. Moms are given the choice of how they want labor and birth to happen. They are free to walk around during labor and find the position that provides them the most comfort. The same philosophy holds for the delivery. Instead of using drugs, the Miami Maternity Center encourages moms to use natural pain management and relaxation techniques like massage or hydrotherapy. “The woman is free to listen to her own body and do what makes her most comfortable,” said Williams. Williams says their birthing alternatives reduce the risk of unnecessary procedures, like enemas and intravaneuous fluids, as well as hospital borne infections. Most importantly, the baby never leaves mom’s side once they are born for the utmost in safety. “We love what we do. Each of our moms is like our sister or daughter,” said Williams.

or the second year, students at Chapel Hill Elementary in Pembroke Pines honored their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles,
who have fought for their freedom. The entire student body dressed in red, white and blue for the occasion. Approximately 70 Veterans, who have
relatives at the school, were invited to a special breakfast and assembly in observance of Veteran’s Day. As they entered the school, they were saluted by the safety patrols, who lined the hallways. They were treated to a full breakfast, which they ate on patriotic placemats decorated by a third grade class. After Letty Lopez’s fourth grade class signed the Pledge of Allegiance, the show began. Martha Cefkins’ first grade class sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and the chorus sang “United We Stand,” composed by chorus teacher Leonard Hodge. “The song allows the children to show their gratitude for the sacrifices of the soldiers and their families,” said Hodges. The audience also enjoyed a special slide show, which included photos of many of the Veterans in the room. “We cannot ever forget how much the soldiers have done for us,” said Marlene Warheit, who helped organize the event. “They deserve recognition.”

ids of all ages have been playing with LEGOs for more than 50 years. The colored bricks recently took on a new meaning for elementary students at the Pembroke Pines Charter School System Florida State University Campus. They participated in a “field trip” to LegoLand, without ever leaving the school. “LEGOs are fun and they also encourage imagination,” said Dr. Lisa Libidinsky, Principal at the FSU Campus. The on-site field trip was held in the science lab on campus. The students were paired into teams and then worked together to build motorized LEGO cars, robots and carousels. The advanced LEGO kits were made available through the All About Learning program. “The field trip provided students with new ways to think outside the box, utilizing the ever popular LEGO,”

ore than 100 golfers teed off during the 8th Annual Swing for the Green Golf Tournament, hosted by Pembroke Pines City Commissioner Carl Shechter at Hollybrook Golf and Tennis Club. The tournament raised nearly $30,000 to benefit the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Senior Center. This brings the eight year total to almost a quarter of a million dollars. “We had a beautiful day; the sun was shining and the breeze was cool,” said Commissioner Carl Shechter. “We raised nearly $30,000, the food was good and the raffle prizes were fantastic. The day could not have been more perfect.” The golfers teed off at 8 a.m. after a healthy breakfast. When they finished, they enjoyed lunch, followed by the awards ceremony and a raffle drawing for a variety of prizes. Hollybrook’s new Golf Pro Rob Steffes scored the cards. Phil Dowd, Bob Kennedy, Glen Mealer and Tom Lapuma won first place. Commissioner Shechter says he has always had a soft spot for the Senior Center. The non-profit organization, located at 301 N.W. 103rd Ave. in Pembroke Pines, has been in operation for the past 25 years, providing programs and services that enhance the quality of life for the senior population. ast year almost 400,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in the country, making it one of the most requested procedures in cosmetic plastic surgery. Why is the decision to have breast surgery so critical for women? I believe that although there are multiple other cosmetic procedures that women do to improve their appearance and looks, breast surgery is the only one that combines their outward appearance and is intimately connected to how they feel about their femininity. Women may choose to undergo breast enlargement surgery for various reasons. These personal reasons may center around breasts that are perceived to be underdeveloped, differences in the sizes of the breasts, or from changes after pregnancy or breast feeding. Some women may be happy with their breasts but just want them made fuller. Often after weight loss, aging or childbirth, a woman’s breast volume and shape may change. Breast enhancement using breast implants can give a woman more proportional shape and may improve self-esteem. Magazine covers, airbrushed photos of celebrities and computer-generated images often give women an unrealistic view of how they will look after breast implant surgery. That is why it is so important for you and your plastic surgeon to make decisions together based on what is possible for you and your individual goals and desires. Breast augmentation is accomplished by surgically inserting an implant, either saline filled or cohesive silicone gel, behind each breast. Usually, an incision is made under the breast, at the areola, or under the armpit. A pocket is created for the implant either behind the breast tissue or behind the muscle between the breast and the chest wall. There are a variety of different kinds of implants that I will show and discuss with you to select the one most appropriate in your specific case, based on your individual chest measurements. Breast augmentation is performed under general or twilight anesthesia, and after recovery patients are allowed to go home on the same day. Surgery usually takes approximately one hour. It is a safe, proven procedure; but as with any operation, there are certain risks involved that you should discuss with the doctor. However, there is no evidence that breast implants will affect fertility, pregnancy or your ability to breast feed. After surgery, medication can control most pain or discomfort, which subsides in four to five days. Moderate swelling and some bruising of the breasts will disappear gradually. Most patients are able to return to work between five to seven days after surgery. The ability to wear clothes that could never be filled out before and the return of self-esteem and self-confidence that comes with a new figure, make this type of surgery one of the cosmetic procedures with the highest rate of satisfaction. itches, ghosts and goblins of all ages were spotted at Halloween celebrations throughout Pembroke Pines and Miramar. Hundreds showed off their best costumes at the dinner dance and annual Halloween party at the Southwest Focal Point Senior Center. The City of Pembroke Pines’ 9th Annual Booville, at the Pines Recreation Center, was packed with family fun and spooky activities. Many participated in the costume contest at the Annual City of Pembroke Pines Police Department Neighborhood Watch Pines Night Out 2011. Students at the West Pines Preschool sang songs and paraded around school in their favorite costumes. Children and their parents came dressed in costumes for some fun and treats at the City of Miramar’s Halloween at Town Center.

Man’s Best Friend? – Dog Bites And Your Rights By Howard Citron
W
e walk them - run and play with them - and are entertained by the occasional game of “fetch.” When we have a bad day, we are greeted with unconditional affection, tail wagging and eyes reflecting undying loyalty. Man’s best friend comes in all shapes and sizes – Chihuahuas to Great Danes. Regardless of the breed, Florida law holds dog owners strictly liable in the event of a dog bite. This makes it easy to maintain an injury claim arising out of a dog bite and, as such, dog owners need to protect themselves. Dogs bite approximately 4.5 million Americans every year with children being the victims of the most serious attacks. Due to the fact that a dog owner’s relatives, friends or neighbors are the most likely victims of a dog attack, having insurance to cover such a loss means protecting the people who are closest to the dog owner. Insurance for dog bites not only protects your personal finances, it may help to preserve valuable relationships and ensure proper treatment for loved ones. B e c au s e of Florida’s strict liability standards for dog owners, many homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover injuries caused by dog bites. No dog owner should purchase a homeowner’s insurance policy or renter’s insurance policy that excludes canineinflicted injuries unless he/she buys a supplemental policy that covers such a loss. Additionally, every dog owner needs to examine his/her homeowner’s insurance policy or renter’s insurance policy to confirm coverage. It is a good idea to maintain insurance policy limits of at least $100,000 for personal liability and $300,000 if you own a medium sized to large dog. To be absolutely sure that dog bites and other canine-related injuries are not excluded from your homeowner’s insurance policy, you can review the policy language itself. Most likely there will be a section in the policy entitled “Personal Liability” which will itemize all “exclusions.” Read that section of your policy carefully to determine if there are exemptions for injuries inflicted by dogs and/or animals in general. To determine the limits under the policy, review the policy’s “declarations” that lists the names of the insureds, the types of coverage that apply and are included, the cost, and the limits. Finally, inspect all “riders” and amendments to the policy that may be in place that further exclude coverage. Instead of doing this yourself, you can always contact your insurance agent or an attorney to help you with a policy review. It should be noted that other types of insurance may afford protection to dog owners and/or dog bite victims under certain circumstances. he holidays are the time of the year when maintaining a healthy weight becomes more challenging. The temptation to overeat increases at holiday gatherings and the busyness of holiday shopping causes some people to forgo their exercise regimen. Registered Dietitians Gina Sweat and Lilian Craggs offer these practical tips. How do I go to a holiday celebration and avoid overeating?
There are a few ways to accomplish this. First, avoid going to a celebration on an empty stomach. Skipping meals can lead to consuming more calories at the event. Another technique you can use is to eat more vegetables than fatty and sugary foods. Keep in mind that it is not impolite to tell the host that you are full and have enjoyed the food and atmosphere very much. It is my year to host a holiday party. What can I do to make it healthier and less fattening than traditional holiday parties? You can always offer healthy alternatives. For example, try substituting baked apples with cinnamon and fat free whipped cream for the traditional apple pie dessert. You may also offer diced apples sprinkled with caramel sauce, or a simple fruit salad. One can still enjoy a sweet treat without exceeding calories.

revention, Prevention, Prevention. The key to wellness and good health is preventing disease. Respiratory infections are still included in the top ten causes of death for older patients. Fortunately, there are vaccines widely available to minimize a patients’ risk of being affected. The flu is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It can affect anyone, but young children, pregnant women, people 65 and older and people with weak immune systems and frail health are at greatest risk. The flu can cause high fevers, severe lung infections, diarrhea and even seizures. Every year, thousands of people die from influenza and tens of thousands require hospitalization. Unfortunately, many people are afraid of the flu vaccine because they have had side effects in the past. Serious problems, however, are rare. You cannot get influenza from the vaccine, but you might get mild fevers, aches, headache, fatigue and reactions at the site of the injection. In the 1970s, a small amount of swine flu vaccines were associated with severe neurological effects. However, since then, we have not seen this occur. The risk is 1 to 2 cases per million. Overall, as medical professionals we feel that the benefits of the vaccination clearly outweigh the risk and advise all patients to be vaccinated. Pneumonia is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. Its leading cause is a bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. Anyone can be affected by this infection, but people at greatest risk include smokers, patients 65 years and older, young children, people with certain health problems and weakened immune problems. We recommend that all people who smoke, all adults 65 and older, and patients ages 2-64 with significant health problems get vaccinated. Usually one dose is required, except for people 65 years and older who got their first dose when they were younger than 65 and it has been 5 more years since their first dose. Usually, side effects are mild, including discomfort at the site of the injection, and less than 1% of people develop fever and muscle aches. Please remember that we are living in an age of resistant infections, and preventing these respiratory illnesses is extremely important. Is There Ever a Right Time to Loan Modify? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
W
e’ve previously outlined the pitfalls of most residential home loan modifications. Some of these include higher principal balances, the length of time required to complete the loan modification process, the temporary nature of a loan modification, and the high rate of default after a modification. However, there are limited circumstances under which a loan modification can work.
The Property is the Borrower’s Principal Residence
Most lenders will only consider a loan modification of a borrower’s principal residence. The rationale behind this is that a borrower is more likely to make all payments under a loan modification agreement on their family home, as opposed to an investment property. Indeed, the underlying purpose of the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) enacted in February 2009 was to help homeowners stay in their home. If you are struggling to loan modify an investment property or second home, you need to consider other more viable options.
The Borrower Has Positive Equity or At Least Owes What the Property is Worth
As most borrowers are painfully aware, most loan modifications will not include a reduction of the amount you owe your lender, but may actually include an increase. Agreeing to a loan modification with a higher principal balance may place the homeowner so deep in debt that he/she may never “break even” or realize any profit from the sale of the home. For this reason, it is critical that a homeowner have some equity in the property they are seeking a loan modification, or at least owe close to what the property is worth.
The Mortgage Loan Does Not Contain Elements of Fraud or Other Violations of Law
A homeowner should never sign a loan modification agreement without at least investigating whether the loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law. In order to rule out the possibility of mortgage fraud, a homeowner should conduct a forensic audit of their home loan. Homeowners should stay away from online sites that sell inexpensive forensic audits, and even from law firms that offer to perform the audit themselves. Their favorite thing to do is to sleep in a rocking chair while sucking an old blanket they have had since babies. They were last seen looking for butter in the kitchen.

About 63% of all households in the United States have a pet which includes about 78.2 million owned dogs and about 86.4 million owned cats. One recent survey even showed that 57% would prefer their pet as their only companion if they were stranded on a desert island and that 32% of pet owners allow their dog to sleep in their bed with them. More than half surveyed said they remember their neighbor’s pet’s name, but not the neighbor’s name! Life would certainly feel empty without pets. The human animal bond is a very powerful connection between pets and their owners and I am very fortunate to be able to experience this bond not only with my own pets but with my patients and their owners as well. Keeping pets healthy and taking care of them when they are ill are both very rewarding parts of my job, but being able to keep the human animal bond strong is probably the most fulfilling. Memorial Hospitals among Nations Top Performers on Key Quality Measures
T
wo Memorial Healthcare System hospitals – Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Pembroke – have earned national recognition as Top Performers on Key Quality Measures from The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in the United States. “To be ranked among the nation’s top performers is an honor that reflects Memorial’s dedication to delivering outstanding medical care in a patient- and familycentered environment,” says Frank V. Sacco, FACHE, president and Memorial Hospital West chief executive officer of Memorial Healthcare System. “We are extremely proud of this accomplishment.” This is the first year for the program, and the 2011 list is based on 2010 accountability measure data reported about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to be the best treatments for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma. The 405 hospitals on the list represent the top 14 percent of the more than 3,000 Joint Commission-accredited hospitals that reported data. To be recognized, an organization must meet two 95 percent performance thresholds. First they must achieve a composite performance of 95 percent or above in the results of all the accountability measures for which they report data. Second, they must meet or exceed a 95 percent performance target for every accountability measure for which they report data. Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Pembroke were acknowledged for achieving 95 percent performance thresholds in four adult measures: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.

ost people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or final judgment is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 30 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December and as such last minute issue usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, who have been divorced in the past three years, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day”. As an example, in even numbered years such as 2010, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. pon our recent return from an incredible excursion to South Africa, we are excited to share an extraordinary destination spot for your next vacation of a lifetime! Flying South African Airways (SAA) was a pleasure. The friendly hospitality and outstanding service coupled with the slightly wider than usual seats and legroom, even in economy class, made every moment of a very long trip more comfortable than one can imagine. Throughout the flight we were served an assortment of snacks and beverages, along with tasty meals, and offered a superior entertainment selection. The time simply flew! It is no wonder South African Airways is an award-winning carrier! For the discerning traveler, SAA offers Premium Business Class. Travelers enjoy pure luxury and a unique flying experience, including 180-degree fully flat-bed seats, gourmet meals prepared on board, and electronic power jacks at every seat. The attentive staff goes above and beyond, fully dedicated to the comfort of your trip. After dining in Sandton, Johannesburg, at the Nelson Mandela Square, we were transported to the magnificent TAU Game Lodge located within the Madikwe Game Reserve. Words fail to accurately describe the incredible experience of a true Safari in the untamed bush of Africa! Within minutes of arriving we were greeted by a herd of elephants, from the matriarch to a six-day-old baby who thought he was ready for a swim. It was awe-inspiring to watch his mother lovingly wrap her trunk around him and pull him back to safety. We experienced these unforgettable moments directly from the patio of our lodge, which overlooked a water hole frequented by every wild animal imaginable! Every morning, and again in the evening, we boarded an open Jeep with our knowledgeable and highly qualified ranger, Gerard. It is hard to describe the feeling of not knowing what you will encounter around the next bend, in terrain left untouched since the beginning of time. While we enjoyed our adult safari adventures, the children were safely back at the lodge participating in a wonderful, educational children’s camp program. They even enjoyed a mini-safari of their own. At sunset, our ranger would select a stop and magically arrange a table fit for royalty. We were refreshed with sun downers of every choice accompanied by the finest hot and
cold appetizers. This we enjoyed with the sound of the wild in our ears and a spectacular sunset as a backdrop! Each adventure was more magnificent than one could imagine. At different intervals we came within yards of the wild: a lioness and her two teenage cubs, a solitary dominant male lion, three baby cubs waiting for their mother to return with food, a herd of elephants, and a leopard lounging in a tree above our heads. We saw almost every species imaginable including rhinoceros, warthogs, wildebeest, zebras, impalas, kudus, and hundreds of species of birds. Amazing is the only way to describe it. Having enjoyed many adventures at game lodges over the years, we can honestly tell you that TAU Game Lodge is our absolute favorite! With the call of the wild now behind us, we flew SAA to the glorious city of Cape Town. Surrounded by massive mountain ranges with huge cliffs falling into the sapphire ocean, its sheer beauty makes it hard to catch one’s breath. By cable car we ascended Table Mountain, and were awestruck by the vastness and beauty as we looked out where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet at the tip of the African continent. We booked our accommodations through Go2Africa, under the direction of Kerry de Kock, who rents luxury homes in Cape Town and the surrounding areas. Our estate was located at the base of the Twelve Apostles, part of the Table Mountain range, in Camps Bay. Traveling as a group was our good fortune, resulting in a super-luxurious, five suite accommodation costing only $44 per person, per day! The private villa enabled us to each have our own suite as we willingly shared the enormous entertainment areas, gourmet kitchen, heated pool and amenities. We were able to sightsee in the Cape Town area by hiring Roland Pickup Tourism Service. Our knowledgeable guides took us to Stellenbosch, where we went chocolate and wine tasting. Then, we went on to Franschoek, for shopping and dining, a tour of an ostrich farm, Hermanus for whale watching, Chapman’s Peak for awesome views, and Hout Bay for its sheer beauty. Nothing compares

with the spectacular scenery of the Cape Province. The beaches are dotted with huge boulders and exquisite landscaping. The food in South Africa is simply delicious. Everything is grown locally so you are eating the highest quality food available. We enjoyed fabulous fresh fruit and vegetables, succulent meat and chicken, and simply spectacular fish and shellfish. Our group voted the sushi the best we ever tasted. More than anything, the people of Cape Town are so welcoming and genuine. The locals are the consummate hosts towards anyone visiting their country. They truly go out of their way to be of service. Being south of the equator, South Africa has the opposite seasons as us. This is now their summer time, which is a wonderful time to visit.
South Africa should be on everyone’s bucket list. This trip was a dream come true. In our hearts we will treasure the beauty we saw and the new friends we made. s we move closer to the holiday season and 2012, I would like to share my best wishes with everyone in our community and my hope that brighter economic days are close at hand for all of us. Our Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Easter Seals Adult Day Care commemorated the Fifth Annual Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month on November 9th. November is designated to honor those with Alzheimer’s disease and those family members, health care professionals and social workers Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis who commit their lives to care for them daily with dignity and respect. There was an Open House, educational presentation and a Butterfly Release Ceremony. This event highlighted the fact that there is a place of care and support in our community for those who suffer with the disease of Alzheimer’s. If anyone has any questions about the program, please call Southwest Focal Senior Center at 954-450-6888. On another matter of interest in our community, at our last commission meeting we had the opportunity to evaluate the impact of the Red Light Camera program in Pembroke Pines. Upon the Police Department reviewing the red light camera location for east bound Pines Boulevard at the intersection with 129th Ave., the number of accidents that occurred on an annual basis decreased by 46 percent. This was determined by the number of accidents, 20 over the last 36 months ending June 2011, decreasing as compared to the 24th month period ending June 2008, which had 25 accidents. The number of red light violations has also decreased by 43 percent at this intersection. This was determined by the 12 month period ending June 2011, indicating 2,280 red light violations, as compared to the 12 month period ending June 2010 of 4,017 red light violations. These are positive results indicating behavior modification with motorists which will create safer intersections in our City.

Friday, November 11, 2011 was Veterans Day and the City of Pembroke Pines dedicated a new Veterans Memorial at City Center by unveiling a beautiful Obelisk. he holidays somehow tend to bring out the best and the worst in people and blended families are no exception. Unfortunately, grownups often pick this time to flex their parenting muscles and demand “equal time” while forgetting that their children’s family has been completely restructured. There may be new adults in their lives, new stepsiblings and possibly entirely new extended families. The traditions that once defined their family become taboo and subject to scrutiny. All too often I see that parents, in an effort to establish the “new” family, ignore the sentiments of their children. They may even send the message that old customs and memories need to be erased. The holiday season is particularly trying on the co-parent (or ex-spouse) relationships. Even in the best co-parent relationship, one characterized by considerate negotiation regarding time with the children, there is sadness over traditions lost and memories of previous family holidays. Getting used to new traditions, different foods, and being with strange new extended family members in unfamiliar homes adds to these stresses for both the children and the adults.

Holiday experiences open these underlying, hidden dynamics of stepfamily life. Loyalty conflicts and issues of loss can easily spoil the joy of the season for children and other family members if parents are not careful. One way to ease these conflicts is to be proactive in discussing upcoming holiday plans. Determine your preferences and wishes and what compromises you will make. Then, contact the other significant adults and start negotiating. Remember, not everyone is going to be as willing to negotiate or open to change and it will be up to you as to how your holidays will be remembered. Another way to make the season more memorable is to talk about the holidays with your children. Allow them to describe what traditions they cherished the most from their past holidays and try to incorporate these into the blended family. If there is more than one set of stepchildren be sure to encourage all of them to share in this activity. The stepparents’ role during the first holidays will be to respect previous traditions and slowly introduce new ones. The definition of a family for all practical purposes is a cluster of shared memories. Many of these memories are made in the form of traditions: activities or patterns of interaction that we repeat on a daily, weekly, or even annual basis. Traditions are important because they communicate our identity as a family. The important thing about building a new stepfamily holiday tradition is that you are all trying to make new memories together. Keep in mind that the first holidays are always the most difficult ones and that making the holidays special takes planning, patience and compromise, no matter what kind of family you have.

curriculum and over the years we’ve created a proven system that works. Our students progress quickly as musicians, they are very loyal, and they learn skills that extend to all areas of their life.

t the School of Rock, children learn music by playing Classic Rock. This unique approach simultaneously develops the student’s confidence and musicianship. Students quickly progress from beginner to playing in an authentic concert setting.
Who is your typical student? We take students, ages seven to 18, of all skill levels. Students can study guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums and vocals. What types of programs do you offer? Students take a 45-minute Zim and Owner/General Manager Richard Salit watch. weekly private lesson combined with a weekly group rehearsal. For beginning students, the rehearsal is a 90-minute jam session called Rock 101. As students progress, they graduate to our advanced performance program where they have a three hour rehearsal, usually on weekends. Every season they study a different band or genre and then perform at local venues.

Who gets to be in the show? Everyone. Our unique casting process ensures the integration of various skill levels and promotes mentorship and leadership in our more advanced players. Furthermore, because we offer open enrollment, we cast our shows so that students can join mid-season and still get parts.
Richard Salit, owner and general manager of the School of Rock of West Broward, provided answers to some commonly asked questions about the school’s philosophy and programs. What is the School of Rock? The School of Rock is a performance-based music school for kids. Using Classic Rock as our teaching example, we combine private instruction with rehearsals and jam sessions to provide a unique, compelling approach to learning.
Do you offer other opportunities for advanced students? In addition to our regular programs, we also have our “House Band” comprised of our top students in terms of work ethic, attitude and ability. They perform at charity and community events. The best students from all of the School of Rock franchises around the country are invited to be part of the AllStar Program which tours the country each summer.
What is the school’s teaching philosophy? A big part of our approach is that people learn music by doing. Our students not only are motivated by playing with others, but learn how to prepare for performances and work with others in a band setting. This not only creates superior musicians, but helps support our tag line: “Inspiring kids to rock on stage and in life.”
Which artists do students study? The School of Rock uses Classic Rock as our teaching example so we focus on those bands and artists. We study everyone from the Beatles and the Grateful Dead to Aerosmith and the Best of The 90’s. Our students are currently studying Pink Floyd and will perform The Wall concert on January 28th.
What differentiates the School of Rock from other music schools? Our performance-based approach separates us from most other schools that simply offer individual or group instruction. Our performance component is integral to our
What credentials do your instructors have? All of our instructors are actively performing musicians. They are all well versed in music theory, reading, and are all experts on their instruments. What is your background and how did you get into this business? I’ve played music since I was eight, starting with piano lessons. When I was a teenager I took up guitar, but for many years I stopped playing. When I moved to Florida 11 years ago, I started playing again and got increasingly more involved with music as my kids became interested in music. I enrolled them in the School of Rock about 3 ½ years ago and we liked the program so much that I decided to change careers and do something that would mean more to me. I was able to take on the day to day management of the School of Rock and combine my passion of music with a new career. What’s the best way someone can try the School of Rock? We are offering a Winter Break Boot Camp from December 26-30th. It’s open to children ages ten to 17. The cost is $300 for the week. We’re also offering half-off the first month of our Performance Program for new students. The School of Rock of West Broward is conveniently located in Southwest Ranches at 6880 Dykes Road in the Coquina Plaza, at the corner of Sheridan and Dykes.
