A Time to be Thankful!

s hard as it is to believe , another year is
quickly drawing to a close. Summer vacation is now a mere memory. We’ve crashed from the Halloween sugar rush. With cooler nights ahead, we can enjoy the beauty of South Florida’s fall season. As the month of November takes hold, we begin to look forward to the coming holiday season. While families everywhere are busy making preparations for a delicious Thanksgiving feast, our Jewish friends will simultaneously celebrate Hanukkah as well, making this year a truly joyous time of togetherness. While we sit down this holiday season with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a fancy feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year. Imaginations Come Alive at the StoryBook Festival By Debby Teich
M
any think
of the library as a place to read a book in silence. On November 16, some of these books will come alive at the Broward County Library’s 12th Annual StoryBook Festival, “King ‘Author’s’ Stories of the Round Table,” which will be held from 10am to 4:30pm, at the Southwest Regional Library. The free family event offers a day of music, dance, storytelling, storybook characters, crafts, and activities for youngsters and their families. “It is a great way for kids of all ages to connect with their favorite stories,” said Susan Hill, Youth Services Supervisor. Dancing princesses and a costume “They can jumpstart their imaginations parade at the 2012 Storybook Festival and have a great time.” More than 4,000 people are expected to attend. The first 1,000 children to arrive will receive a free book. Children are encouraged to come to the festival dressed in their favorite storybook costumes.

▸▸ Join the StoryBook Parade, along with a large cast of storybook characters. ▸▸ Watch live children’s performances on three stages. ▸▸ Get creative in the arts and crafts tent, where kids can make Merlin’s magic potion, catapults, family shields, stained glass and more. ▸▸ Roam the Fantasy Forest, a magical place where children can interact with their favorite storybook characters, such as the Three Little Pigs, Big Bad Wolf, Rapunzel and more. ▸▸ Play a game of human chess, where teen volunteers are dressed as the pieces. ▸▸ Dance around the maypole. ▸▸ Get your face painted. ▸▸ Swap tales at the “Swappin’ Ground” area, where children and adults can tell their own stories. ▸▸ Listen to students from Chapel Trail Elementary tell their award-winning stories in the Hobbit room. They will be joined by other storytellers. ▸▸ Bring cameras to take pictures at the StoryBook Photo Spots, which include Snow White, Robin Hood, a king and queen, and more. ▸▸ Watch the stilt walkers. ▸▸ Indulge in tasty treats from the food trucks. The StoryBook Festival is funded through the Broward Public Library Foundation, with support from the City of Pembroke Pines, Friends of Southwest Regional Library, Baptist Medical Plaza and others.

Pembroke Pines Farmers’ Market Opens By Debby Teich

residents no longer have to leave their neighborhood to purchase some of the freshest products available from local vendors and farmers. Last month, the City of Pembroke Pines and Whole Foods Markets held the grand opening of the Pembroke Pines Farmer’s Market, located at 14956 Pines Boulevard. Every Thursday, from 4pm to 8pm, more than 40 local vendors will set up shop at the west end of the Whole Foods parking lot. They will offer locally grown produce, homemade products and other unique items not found at any grocery store. It is an opportunity to buy handcrafted jams & jellies; local honey; exotic fruits; hand-poured soy candles; plants, trees and fresh herbs; fresh made guacamole; handmade kettle corn; vegan desserts; handcrafted sea salt and more. The market also has a variety of international cuisine from Spain, France, India and other countries. Some of the merchants include: Juice Bar, Guacamole House, Estela’s Orchids, Paellas de Espana, Thoroughly Modern Muffins, Via Vegan, Honey Bee, Cookielicious, Colors of France, Nani’s Gourmet Pasta, Teaganics, A Cup a Cake,
Keith Lorren Spices, Herbeque, Magic City Slush, JC’s Daily Bread, Ceviche 305, Marando Farms, Ft. Lauderdale Farmers, Pop Cart, Nisha’s Flavors of India, and Soy Veganease. Each week, the market will feature a variety of kids’ activities, fun events, music and dancing. On November 7 and 21, sample some Thanksgiving dishes and ask the experts for cooking advice. Bring your dancing shoes, so you can enjoy free salsa lessons and join a dance “rueda” with the Nuevolution Dance School at 6:30pm. On November 14, sample some Thanksgiving dishes. Put on your boots and cowboy hat and participate in Country Night at the Farmers’ Market, where you can enjoy free line dancing lessons at 6:30pm. On November 28, the market will be closed for Thanksgiving. Q&A with Michael & Marissa
1. What makes the gymnastics programs at TAG USA different? In the four years that we have owned the gym, TAG USA has transformed into a very popular and successful gym. Class Directors Elizabeth Geraci and Coach Luis Lopez have our classes very well organized with lesson plans and quality mature coaches. Our competitive teams are competing head to head against other local gyms and have great success. At the October competitions at Celebrate America and Gold Rush, TAG USA finished in First Place in Levels 2, 3, and 4 versus most of the other local gyms. The success of our teams comes directly from our quality recreational classes.
2. Tell us about the amazing past year for TAG USA! Everyone knows about our back to back state championships in 2012 and 2013 and our girls and boys regional champs. In 2013, TAG USA had our first Boys National Champion Qualifier and the gym’s first NATIONAL CHAMPION. This summer Olympic Gold medallist Aly Raisman worked out our team girls and visited our classes and summer camp kids. Other famous visitors included Olympian Scott Johnson, Olympic Coach Miles Avery, and US National Team Coach Luminita Garcy.
3. How does having the largest gym benefit a young athlete? All gyms in this area, even ones with large programs, are in a small facility. TAG USA has a large and popular gym, which allows us to have much more space with more equipment. Our class groups get more training time and repetitions because they do not share equipment like in other gyms.
What also makes us different is that all parents have front row seats to watch their children and our class schedules run concurrently for the convenience of families with multiple children.
4. How has TAG USA’s unique programs changed gymnastics in the area? Other gyms have tried to copy our success, but TAG USA invests in quality coaches and has a one-of-a-kind facility. Our unique ideas have included presenting every athlete with a medal at the end of their class session, having free newborn and mommy classes, which are open to the community, and having the lowest prices for classes and teams. TAG USA has always been a USAG gym and we are happy to see other gyms change to a USAG program. Besides having the best facility, we are different because we actually train our coaches properly, use lesson plans to evaluate skills, and have managers that monitor every class.
5. What do you recommend for parents who are searching for a recreational program? I tell parents to visit all of the local gyms and compare the cleanliness and safety of the facility, the organization of class programs, success in teams, and our special prices.

Director Rebeca Russo-Columna is involved in the enhancement of each and every student. While in Canada, she was spotted by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet director, and was invited to dance at The Royal Winnipeg Ballet and began touring with the company at the age of 16. Rebeca has performed in Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Grand Pas de Quatre (Taglioni), Paquita, Swan Lake, Sylphides, Giselle, Nutcracker, Monkayo, Strike Up The Band and Exuberance, to name a few. Her passion has always been in classical ballet however, due to her vast training in all fields, she also appeared in many televised events, music videos, and commercials with well-known entertainers including Don Johnson, Willie Nelson, Paul Shaffer, Jay Leno, Barbara Eden and many more. After spending numerous years dancing professionally, teaching and choreographing for special events and dance venues, Academy of Arts was founded in 1994. Knowing how important it is to receive excellent training at an early age, she decided to pass this along to students that also have the desire to learn from the best in the field. She understands how important it is for a classical ballerina to train in different areas in order to expand possibilities and be successful in the arts. With this in mind, she is always open to hiring the best, regardless of cost. She offers this training to her students at a fraction of the cost, since she was blessed with many opportunities at an early age to do what she loved. There are no recital fees, no rehearsal fees, no minimum ticket purchases for performances and no high-priced tickets to purchase. The Academy’s Performing Group is made up of students that have volunteered their time to be a part of shows performed throughout the year. Since this is a performing art, we hold fundraisers in order to give students the opportunity to perform in venues such as: Disney, Epcot, Century Village, Senior Focal Point, Miramar Cultural Center, Bailey Concert Hall and other community events. The children are not auditioned, but rather given a chance to enjoy the art of dance. All costumes are purchased by Miss Rebecca and given to the dancers at no cost. The Academy’s Dance Company is comprised of very talented young dancers that have been auditioned to be a part of this special program. The Company represents a dancing group of the community and for the community. It is an intense program which includes training in all areas of dance needed to prepare the students for a professional career. These dancers are not only taught by the staff at the Academy, but are also given the opportunity to work with guest artists and are encouraged to receive training in all areas to help them reach their full potential. They perform in the annual Holiday Show and yearly recital. There is no additional cost to be a part of the dance company. In the past, many of the Academy’s graduating students had to choose between obtaining a college degree and pursuing a career in dance. The Academy of Arts Professional Company, Metropolitan Ballet of Florida, gives local professionals and talented artists the opportunity for employment. M.B.F. also gives former students employment opportunities, while they continue to train and receive compensation. Donations Needed for Veterans’ Holiday Project By Debby Teich

ince 2001, the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger Veterans’ Nursing Home, at the Howard C. Forman Complex in Pembroke Pines, has been offering skilled nursing care for United States Veterans. The City of Pembroke Pines Police Department invites the community to participate in a Holiday Project to benefit the veterans who live there. The PPPD’s Community Affairs Unit is coordinating the holiday project for the 120 veterans who reside at the nursing home. The veterans range in age from their 50’s to 90’s. They have fought in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Granada, Panama, Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom/Global War on Terror, Operation Iraqi Freedom and more. Eight of the residents are female. “We want our veterans to know that the community of Pembroke Pines appreciates and remembers their service,” said Valerie Toth, Officer Community Affairs. “Many of the veterans have no family or visitors. There is no budget for outings, so gift cards to area restaurants, movies, and sporting events would be extra special. They would provide our Veterans with an opportunity to interact with others, enjoy
their lives, and all the community has to offer.” Toth says that the goal of the project is to provide a holiday gift bag for each Veteran, enhance the activities program (TV and game room, library, field trips), and provide gift cards for outings. The PPPD is hoping to receive donations by December 7, which is also Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. They are looking for the following: ▸▸ Gift bag items, such as non-slip tube slippers, tube socks, lap blankets, personal care items (shampoo, conditioner, lotions, liquid coconut oil, liquid soap, perfume, cologne, powder, etc.), sweaters, sweatshirts, and new Military T-shirts/Hats. ▸▸ Items for the Activity Program, such as new board games, cards, large print books, DVD’s, and magazines (e.g. Military, Life, Time, National Geographic, Good Housekeeping). ▸▸ Gift cards to outings, such as shows, movies, restaurants, pizza restaurants, sporting events, and more. “We will deliver the gifts to the veterans on behalf of the residents of Pembroke Pines, just in time for their holiday party,” said Toth. According to the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Florida has the third largest population of veterans in the nation after California and Texas. Of the more than 1.5 million veterans that reside in the state, approximately 160,000 of them are women. Relay For Life Welcomes New Teams and Members for 2014 Event By Debby Teich Alexis Santana, 13, and Madison Novo, 11, announced the formation of their “Divas for A Cure” team.

his year 1.5 million people will hear the
dreaded words, “You have cancer.” On March 14, thousands will gather on the athletic field at Walter C Young Middle School for the 16th Annual Relay for Life of Pembroke Pines. The 18-hour overnight event, for ages 3 to 93, will begin at 6:30pm with a Survivor’s Dinner and last all night, because cancer never sleeps. Organizers recently held a kick-off party to welcome new teams and announce upcoming fundraising efforts. Relay for Life is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is NOT just a race or walk. Teams of people and individuals have fun while raising funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. The event gives participants a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Jules Meyer, one of the original founders, will co-chair the Pembroke Pines Relay event with WPLG Channel 10 news anchor Kristi Kruger. This year’s theme is “Sweet 16.” The goal is to raise $165,000. Organizers are also hoping to double the amount of Survivors that attend. “At the Relay, we remember those we have lost, but also celebrate those who have survived,” said Francie Novo, Logistics Chair for the Relay For Life Pembroke Pines and Pembroke Pines Special Events Coordinator. More than 150 people showed up for the kick-off
event, including several new teams. Mayor Frank C. Ortis will lead the Mayor’s Gang, which was the top fundraising team in 2013, raising nearly $18,000. Alexis Santana, 13, and Madison Novo, 11, announced the formation of their Divas for A Cure team. Pines Athletic Center Offers A Variety of Programs By Debby Teich

Pines offers many ways for youth to stay active and involved. At the Pines Athletic Center (formerly PAL), boys and girls, ages 6 to 17, can participate in boxing, Taekwondo, basketball clinics, after school programs, camps during winter, spring and summer break, the Leadership Program and more. It is open Monday through Friday, from 2:30pm to 8pm.
Some of the programs include:
▸▸ Taekwondo – Learn traditional Taekwondo, self-discipline, and respect. Boost self-esteem and get in shape. Classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginners meet from 6pm to 7pm. Advanced students meet from 7pm to 8pm. Cost is $10/month. ▸▸ Boxing – Learn self-defense and self-confidence; compete in amateur bouts; build self-esteem; and get in shape. Classes meet on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays. Beginners meet from 5pm to 6pm. Advanced students meet from 6pm to 7pm. Cost is $10/month. ▸▸ Basketball – Improve your basic skills and learn the fundamentals of basketball. Weston Miracle League Kicks Off Baseball Season in Pembroke Pines By Debby Teich
O
n N ovember 17, the Weston M iracle League
will begin its 7th baseball season in Pembroke Pines, giving South Florida children with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball. Once again, the stands will be packed with proud parents and volunteers shouting words of encouragement like “great hit,” “great catch” and “you can do it.” The Weston Miracle League serves any disabled child, between the ages of 5 and 18, who has a desire to play baseball. Since baseball diamonds were not exactly designed with wheelchairs and crutches in mind, the Miracle League removes the barriers that keep children with disabilities off the baseball field. Players can join the league throughout the season, which runs through January 26. There is no cost to participate and baseball experience is not needed. All practices and games take place Sundays, from 4 to 5pm, at Rose G. Price Park’s Miracle League Baseball Field in Pembroke Pines. The park has a field with a special rubberized surface that makes it accessible for individuals with wheelchairs or other assistive walking devices. The atmosphere at the games is very low key and every player leaves a winner. Parents have an opportunity to take a break and relax, while their kids have fun on the field. Some of the players are focused on the game, and others simply
want to play catch on the sideline. Each inning all of the players have an opportunity to bat, remain safe on the bases, and score a run. For many of the kids, it is the highlight of their week. “The unstructured aspect of the Miracle League allows the kids to take their time and not be under pressure,” said Ali Gutierrez, whose ten-year-old son Ayden has been playing in the Miracle League for the past three years. “They do not have to deal with rules that may be hard for them to understand. I very much look forward to seeing his smile after he has hit the ball and is proudly running the bases.” To help the athletes, the Miracle League uses a “buddy” system – pairing each player with an able-bodied peer, age 13 or older. The volunteers attend a variety of middle and high schools throughout Broward County and earn service hours for their work. This will be the third year that high school sophomore Jonathan Goldberg will volunteer for the Weston Miracle League. “It is really fulfilling to play with these kids, because they are so much fun,” said Jonathan. “I believe that the league is a bit more than just baseball. It is about giving to the children who are not as fortunate as most kids who are able to enjoy the little league experience or just have fun with other kids.” Rose G. ‘Tis the Season for Holiday Celebrations By Debby Teich
T
he winter holiday season is upon us and there are many
ways for residents to celebrate with friends and family. Snow is forecasted for Pembroke Pines during the SnowFest/ Lighting Ceremony, held at the Pembroke Pines City Center, 10300 Pines Boulevard, on December 7, from 2 to 6pm. The children can play in 50 tons of snow, visit with Santa, watch holiday performances, and participate in a variety of activities, including face painting, rides, games, arts and crafts and more. At 5:45pm, the whole family can help light up City Hall with the Mayor and some of his close friends, including Santa, Rudolph and Frosty. Tickets are only required for the snow area ($4 per child for residents/$6 per child for non-residents). Santa has been busy answering letters from the kids on his Pembroke Pines route. Any child who has a special message for Santa or wants to submit a wish list should send a letter to: North Pole C/O City of Pembroke Pines, 10100 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, FL 33026. Letters can also be placed in Santa’s Express Mailbox, which will magically appear on December 3, at City Hall. Santa will personally write back to each child and wish them a Happy Holiday. Letters must be mailed by December 11 to receive a response by December 24. On December 12, from 6pm to 9pm, gather your loved ones and bring a camera to see the beautiful displays of holiday decorations at the Annual Holiday Open House. It will be held at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, 301 NW 103rd Avenue. The event is open to the public. There will be live entertainment, complimentary refreshments and a visit from Santa.

The Community Art Project is Unveiled By Debby Teich
R
esidents may recognize their
faces in a new public art project, The Community, which was recently installed at two sites in Pembroke Pines. In 2011, guests who attended the Art Festival in the Pines were invited to have their photos taken for use as the “face” inspiration for project, which was curated by Robyn Vegas, Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines, and created by artist Ruben Ubiera. The art project includes two permanently installed towers outside the Fletcher Art and Cultural Center, 7960 Johnson Street, and one tower outside the Studio 18 in the Pines, 1101 Poinciana Drive, inside the Howard Forman Complex. Ubiera styled 1,242 red clay bricks into each of the three towers, which are approximately 4’ x 4 ½” tall and 1’x 10 ½” wide. They took him six weeks to paint. “The feedback we have received regarding these unique and artistic towers has been Artist Ruben Ubiera with wonderful,” said Vegas. The Community The Pembroke Pines Arts & Culture Advisory Board and the City’s Parks and Recreation Department supported the project by providing Ubiera with the bricks. “When Ruben first presented his concept to the Art Board, we were immediately excited about the uniqueness of the project,” said Board Chairperson Rose Colombo. “Ruben’s work often engages the community, bringing art to those who
might not usually experience art.” Ubiera is a Dominican neofigurative artist, who is known for his strong use of the line graffiti inspired technique/esthetic, urban murals, mixed-media pieces and installations, all created with reclaimed-objects and found artifacts. His work includes still-life and situational portraiture, but he tends to primarily focus on depicting his immediate urban surroundings and everyday complex human emotions. Ubiera never uses canvases, since he believes that his work has no frames, much like the everyday art that is developing on the streets. “I believe The Community touches part of my past and part of everyone’s future,” said Ubiera. “A building cannot be raised without a strong foundation. The same goes for a community. Brick by brick, everyone is equally important. Glass Gallery 9th Annual Art Competition. Seven winners and two honorable mentions were selected. Diane Liblinski of Pembroke Pines won Best of Show for her sculpture. Through November 18, the community is invited to view the free exhibit, located at the Glass Gallery, 10100 Pines Boulevard. The juried art competition features 181 pieces of beautifully displayed art. It represents a wide variety of art mediums, including: watercolor, oil, pencil, sculpture, mixed media, ceramic and photography. “The inspired pieces range from formal portraits to modern expressionism,” said Ben Menasche, City of Pembroke Pines Art Curator. “Our community is for-

Mayor Ortis Reads to Silver Palms Students to Help Break World Record By Debby Teich

Mayor Frank C. Ortis recently joined the nationwide effort to break the world record for people reading the same book on the same day. They participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, which celebrates literacy and promotes early childhood education. The program sends a powerful message to children about the importance of reading and helps them get them excited about books and learning. On October 3, students in Mrs. Bunting’s kindergarten class gathered around Mayor Ortis as he read this year’s official book, Otis by New York Times bestselling author Loren Long. They were united with millions of children and adults throughout the nation who were also reading the children’s story about friendship and loyalty. “Reading is the key to learning and improving oneself,” said Mayor Ortis, who believes that a “good leader is a good reader and a good reader is a good leader.” Principal Amanda Walker was happy to have Mayor Ortis as a guest reader. “The students and
staff were thrilled that our wonderful Mayor, Frank Ortis, took the time from his busy schedule to visit our school and read to the students,” said Walker. “We hope that he enjoyed his visit as much as we enjoyed having him come to our school.” Silver Palms has a variety of programs to reinforce reading at the school. For Rise and Shine Readers, students are rewarded when they are caught reading in the morning before the school day begins. Students also participate in Accelerated Reader, classroom contests, and more. “Reading often is important,” said Walker. “Like anything else, the more you do it, the more you will improve. Fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension will all increase.” In 2012, 2.3 million people participated in Read for the Record. Organizers are still working on this year’s final tally. Florida law requires most employers to obtain workers’ compensation insurance if they have at least four employees (full-time or part-time). Corporate officers in any industry are also considered employees, unless they elect to be excluded from coverage. Sole proprietors and partners outside of the construction industry are not automatically considered employees, but they may elect to be treated as employees.
Exceptions to the General Coverage Requirements
If an employer has fewer than four employees, or if every worker of an employer is excluded from coverage under the Florida Workers’ Compensation Law, the employer is not required to obtain workers’ compensation insurance. However, special coverage requirements exist for employers in the construction industry.

Construction contractors must secure coverage if they have one or more employees (full-time or part-time). Contractors must consider sole proprietors, partners, corporate officers and members of a Limited Liability Company as employees. However, corporate officers and members of a Limited Liability Company may elect to be exempt from coverage requirements. Contractors must be able to show proof of coverage or evidence of exemption for their subcontractors. The Florida Workers’ Compensation Law will hold a contractor responsible for any of its subcontractors that have no appropriate coverage or certificate of exemption. If the employee of a subcontractor with no coverage suffers a work-related injury, the contractor must provide the employee with workers’ compensation benefits. The contractor may later recover all benefits paid—plus interest—from the subcontractor, unless a previous agreement exists between the contractor and the subcontractor.
To meet coverage requirements, Florida employers can secure workers’ compensation insurance: With a policy from a private insurance company licensed to do business in the state. Employers that are unable to obtain coverage in through a private insurance company may apply for a policy with the Florida Workers’ Compensation Joint Underwriting Association.

After learning of an employee’s injury, the employer must report the event to its insurance carrier within seven days. All employers must report work-related fatalities to the Florida Division of Workers’ Compensation within 24 hours of the incident.

When you are pregnant, it can feel as though your body no longer belongs to you. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. But don’t despair, a Mommy Makeover can help you look your best again. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The breasts also grow due to weight gain and to prepare for nursing. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, also known as stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. What is a Mommy Makeover?

outh Florida homeowners and consumers in foreclosure or
at risk of foreclosure are inundated with television commercials, mailers, and even phone calls from companies claiming they can save their home. These companies are usually unlicensed and inexperienced. They are looking for a quick profit at the expense of the consumer. Here are some of the foreclosure rescue scams against which all homeowners must beware: ▸▸ Out of state and local companies guarantee that they can cancel the foreclosure process, and save your home. They often present these promises in official looking documents, which appear government issued or from a bank. At the bottom of the mailer is a tiny disclaimer, which reveals the company is not tied to any bank or federal agency. Since these companies are either non-attorneys, or attorneys unlicensed to practice in the State of Florida, they CANNOT represent you in court. They also CANNOT charge you an upfront fee of any kind to assist you with a loan modification, as it is illegal under Florida law, punishable by civil and criminal penalties. ▸▸ Many realtors have also jumped unto the foreclosure rescue bandwagon, and are pushing short sales which are NOT in the best interests of many South Florida homeowners. I have personally witnessed realtors in court posing as homeowners or counsel before a judge in order to obtain foreclosure sale cancelations and extensions. We represent various clients whose realtors have even forged their signatures on official court documents and filed last minute bankruptcy petitions to stop foreclosure sales without the knowledge

or permission of the homeowner. This process is also illegal and is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for federal prosecution. ▸▸ One other emerging scam is the land trust transfer. The way this unethical scam works is that a company will partner with a less than reputable law firm to prepare a land trust for the property in question, and transfer your title to a land trust over which you have zero control. Then, they file a court action by the land trust to remove the mortgage lien from the property. This process is not a legitimate means of saving your home. You will only lose your money and the title to your home if you fall for this scam. If you have already fallen prey to one of these scams, demand your money back immediately and go to the appropriate authorities if they refuse to refund you money. Early Detection and Innovative Technology Improve Lung Cancer Outcomes Lung cancer results when abnormal cell growth invades and destroys normal lung tissue. An accumulation of abnormal cells is called a tumor. As a tumor grows, it can impair lung function, resulting in breathing difficulty and decreased oxygen in the blood. The cancer can also spread to other organs and eventually cause death. Lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer in the United States and the leading cause of cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 8% of the more than 215,000 new cases this year will be diagnosed in Florida. Q: What are the symptoms of lung cancer? A: Symptoms of lung cancer vary, but may include persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, and coughing up blood. f any of you have been involved in litigation , no
matter the area of the law; you already know that it can be extremely costly. Unfortunately, that is just the reality of litigation. In most instances, the longer it takes to reach a final resolution, the more costly it will be. As they say, “Time is money.” Now imagine that you also must pay the fees and costs for your opposition. You could be responsible for double the fees. You may ask, “How is this possible?” In most areas of the law it is not possible, but in family law it is a very real possibility. Florida Statutes states: “The Court may from time to time, after considering the financial Resources of both parties, order a party to pay a reasonable amount for attorney’s fees, suit money, and the cost to the other party of maintaining or defending any proceeding under this chapter, including enforcement and modification proceedings and appeals.” This statute was created to insure that both parties could be represented by counsel, even if one of the parties does not have the financial ability to retain counsel on their own. The primary purpose was to protect “stay at home” wives, who were not working outside of the home and may not have had the ability to retain an attorney to represent them in their divorce. This would “level the playing field” and allow representation for both parties. The determination of whether fees could be awarded is based upon the concept of need and ability. The receiving spouse must illustrate a need for these fees and the court must find an ability to pay by the spouse who is being asked to pay. Of course, the court cannot prevent the “paying spouse” from having funds to continue with his/her representation. Although I previously indicated that this law was originally passed to protect “stay at home” wives, things have changed in the work force. The law is gender neutral and, as such, a wife could be ordered to contribute to her Husband’s fees if, in fact, she is the one with the ability and he is the one with the need. I can tell you from experience that the payment of attorney’s fees is an area which causes the most obstacles to a settlement. In some instances a Marital Settlement Agreement can have a “prevailing party” clause. This states that if there is a “post judgment” (divorce already finalized) issue which must be litigated (contempt or modification), the prevailing party is entitled to payment of fees by the other party. This is strictly based upon an agreement of the parties and need and ability is not the issue. If a motion is filed to enforce terms of an agreement, the party who is successful will be entitled to reasonable fees. One issue which is considered in either case is whether the requested fees are reasonable. No matter what the scenario, fees must be considered reasonable by the requesting party. nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures
remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage.
The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon. I recently attended the Broward Mayors’ Roundtable on Climate Change, where we looked at major impacts on energy, the environment and water management. Pembroke Pines is a leader in environmental strategies. We upgraded our waste treatment plants and installed low energy, high efficiency pumps. These upgrades produce more power for less energy, and provide for a more even air distribution, thereby treating waste better and quicker for a continuously more efficient waste stream treatment flow. Our energy-saving initiatives are a top priority for sustainability in our city. Additional upgrades to the drying process produces a drier sludge product, more volume to mass, with a higher (more preferable) disposal rating, thereby requiring less fuel and land for disposal. We have added a Thermal Ice Storage System to our High School Chiller System, making ice during low demand hours and low peak electric rates letting the ice supplement the chiller system during peak demands using far less energy. Several decades of Tree City Awards continue to support a citywide sustainable tree canopy system, which has been proven to effect climate change positively. AV Pool installed a geothermal pool heater which sends colder water down deep into the earth to absorb ground heat before being sent to the pool heater (the initial pumping of the ground water costs less than the cost of gas to heat the water from its original temperature to the swimming events temperature). All of Pembroke Pines energy saving methods should lower our carbon footprint, producing a long term sustainable step toward the objectives of Global Climate Change.

Our City’s Technology Services Department recently launched a redesigned City website, www.ppines.com, complete with advanced and user-friendly communication tools for residents and businesses. The new design includes key features such as FAQs to answer the most commonly asked questions; “Notify Me,” where visitors to the site can sign up to be notified via email or text messages about community activities, meetings and other updates; a translation link to translate the website text into different languages; specialized calendars to keep informed about activities in the community; and a document center, which allows for easy access to documents, spreadsheets, pictures, videos, and forms. The Open Government link ensures that residents have open and easy access to information that demonstrates how their elected officials conduct business. It also provides information about government structure, meetings, and access to databases and reports. In these difficult times—a sluggish economy and political gridlock in Washington DC—I believe that cities such as Pembroke Pines are in the forefront of steady onward progress to do the best that we can for our cities.
