Welcome to June, the month that ushers in the vibrant South Florida summer! As the heat and humidity rise, we invite you to embrace the essence of our region. June 10th marks the last day of school for Broward County Schools, a significant milestone for many students. As high schools and colleges gear up for their graduation ceremonies, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our young people. These ceremonies are not just about moving on, but also about reflecting with pride on their achievements and looking forward with anticipation to the next chapter.

In recognition of graduation and summer vacation, we celebrate some of our community’s most impressive teachers. Be sure to check out the profiles in this magazine’s special “Leaders of Learning” section!

June is not just about graduations and summer vacations; it’s also Pride Month! This is a time to reflect on the progress made in the fight for LGBTQ rights. Let’s celebrate our diversity and strive for a more inclusive world.

Fathers across the country are looking forward to June 16th. Father’s Day was conceived in 1909 by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by Mother’s Day, she wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. It became an official holiday in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. We are so excited about all June of fers; enjoy!

Flamingo Garden Society

The society will host a special program from Tony Millet. He will be speaking on “Preparing & Protecting our Orchids for Summers in South Florida. Tony is an accredited AOS judge and has been growing orchids for over 30 years and hybridizing orchids for over 20 years. He breeds and grows unusual hybrids in the large Cattleya alliance and also performs hybridizing and flasking activities. The meeting is hosted at Flamingo Gardens, Mary N. Porter Learning Center, 3750 S. Flamingo Rd., Davie. Doors open at 7:00 pm, and the program begins at 7:30 pm

Celebrate Juneteenth, a day that symbolizes the abolition of slavery in the United States of America. Juneteenth: Freedom Day

On June 19, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas to enforce Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in the last and most remote place in the South. Since then, this date has been celebrated as the end of American slavery. It's important to reflect on the darkest parts of our history so we can move forward. Join friends and neighbors to celebrate the freedoms we have and the progress we still need to make.

Local Firefighter Inspires Youth Wins PuroClean Superhero Campaign

James Murad, a Tamarac firefighter from Davie, is being celebrated for his bravery and commitment to helping others in the PuroClean National Superhero Day Campaign. He stands out as a true hero among many impressive nominees, praised by Deputy Chief Jonathan Fraser and Fire Chief Michael Annese of Tamarac Fire Rescue. Murad’s fearless actions and quick thinking have saved lives and inspired his fellow firefighters and the whole community.

Apart from his firefighting duties, Murad spends time mentoring young people who want to become first responders. He leads the Firefighter Cadet Program, teaching essential skills to prepare cadets for the challenges of the job. Let’s learn more about Murad’s journey and why he’s the winner of the 2024 Superhero Day Campaign.

Born and raised in Davie, Murad always dreamed of helping others. After serving in the Army for four years, he felt even more strongly about serving his community. He briefly went to college but decided firefighting was his true calling.

Murad has a knack for working with young people. Before joining the Tamarac Fire Department, he taught EMT courses at a local high school. Since 2018, he has been busy both at work and at home, taking on the role of lead instructor in the cadet program and becoming a husband and father.

Two years ago, Murad revamped the cadet program to better prepare teens interested in becoming firefighters or EMTs. Under his guidance, cadets learn important skills like wearing firefighting gear, conducting search drills, and using hoses.

The cadet program also competes nationally, and this year, they participated in Coral Springs. Murad understands how to work with teenagers and believes in providing support and guidance to help them succeed.

Looking ahead, Murad wants to keep improving the cadet program and help graduates find jobs. For him, being a firefighter isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life. He values the bonds he shares with his fellow firefighters and cherishes spending time with his family.

When he’s not busy saving lives or spending time with family, Murad enjoys staying active and playing golf with friends. His dedication to service and bravery make him a true hero in the eyes of many.

Children’s Harbor Hosts Third Annual Career Day Expo for Foster Youth

For many students in Broward County, "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" is an exciting opportunity to explore potential career paths by spending the day at their parent’s or guardian's workplace. However, for students currently in foster care, this day can be a reminder of the challenges they face without a parent or guardian to accompany them. To bridge this gap, Children's Harbor hosted its Third Annual Career Day Expo, providing a meaningful and inspiring experience for these youth.

The Career Day Expo was organized by Children's Harbor’s Academic and Life Skills team and featured representatives from 40 companies, government agencies, and the armed forces. This event offered students the chance to explore various career opportunities, interact with business professionals, and attend business etiquette and networking sessions. The goal was to introduce them to a wide range of potential career paths and inspire them to envision a promising future.

Throughout the Expo, students engaged with professionals from diverse fields, learning about different industries and what it takes to succeed in each one. After the event, each student chose an industry that most piqued their interest. The Children's Harbor team then arranged for hands-on experiences at the selected companies on "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day," allowing students to gain real-world insights into their chosen careers.

“It’s truly a gift to be able to show these young people the kind of promising opportunities available to them,” said Children’s Harbor President and CEO Tiffani Dhooge. “For kids who come from traumatic backgrounds, the need to learn what’s expected of them in the often-intimidating work world is especially important and can positively change the trajectory of their life forever.”

Children's Harbor, established in 1996, is a nationally accredited nonprofit agency dedicated to supporting families in the community and providing safe shelter and support for teens in foster care. The organization’s main campus in Pembroke Pines offers a

nurturing environment for teenagers in foster care and their younger siblings. Additionally, Children's Harbor runs a family strengthening program to prevent children from entering foster care by offering in-home counseling and support to struggling families. For young adults aged 18-23 who have aged out of foster care, Children's Harbor provides housing, wrap-around support, and independent living programs to help them transition into adulthood.

TAMARAC'S PIRATE PLUNGE & SAFETY SAIL: A FUN AND EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY EVENT

Tamarac, Florida, hosted its annual Pirate Plunge & Safety Sail event, offering residents an exciting blend of adventure and safety education last month. The family-friendly event, held at the Caporella Aquatic Complex, combined the thrill of pirate-themed activities with essential water safety lessons, making it a must-attend for the community.

The Pirate Plunge portion of the event was a hit with both children and adults. Participants dressed as pirates, complete with eye patches, pirate hats, and colorful costumes, adding to the festive atmosphere. The aquatic complex was transformed into a pirate’s paradise, featuring inflatable slides, treasure hunts, and pirate-themed games. Kids enjoyed splashing around in the pool, searching for hidden treasures, and participating in piratethemed relay races.

While the event was filled with fun, its primary goal was to promote

water safety. The Safety Sail segment provided crucial water safety information and demonstrations. Certified lifeguards and water safety instructors conducted interactive sessions, teaching attendees about the importance of swimming skills, the use of life jackets, and basic rescue techniques.

The event featured live demonstrations of rescue techniques and proper pool safety measures throughout the day. The Tamarac Fire Rescue team was also present, providing fire safety tips and demonstrations.

The Pirate Plunge & Safety Sail event was more than just a fun day out. It was a community effort, with local businesses and organizations coming together to promote health, safety, and wellness. This shared responsibility for water safety fostered a sense of camaraderie among the residents, strengthening our community ties and encouraging ongoing participation in safety initiatives.

Tamarac hosted its annual Mother's Day Dance at the Tamarac Community Center, bringing families together for an unforgettable evening of celebration and appreciation. The event, a cherished tradition in the community, featured live music, dancing, and heartfelt tributes to the incredible mothers of Tamarac.

The community center was decorated with floral arrangements and twinkling lights, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The evening began with a delightful buffet dinner, offering a variety of dishes to suit all tastes. Guests enjoyed savory appetizers, delicious main courses, and delectable desserts, making the meal a highlight of the celebration. Live entertainment kept the energy high throughout the night.

One of the most touching moments of the evening was the series of special tributes to mothers. Attendees shared heartfelt messages and stories, expressing their love and gratitude. These tributes added a personal and emotional touch to

the celebration, highlighting the unique bonds between mothers and their families.

To capture the special moments, a photo booth with fun props and backdrops was available, allowing families to snap pictures that would serve as keepsakes from the evening. Additionally, a professional photographer captured candid shots and posed portraits, ensuring that everyone had beautiful photos to remember the event.

The Mother's Day Dance was more than just an evening of entertainment; it was a celebration of community and family. Many highly successful people credit teachers who impacted them as children. One particularly successful person who credits a teacher’s influence is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has often spoken about her fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Duncan, who she says was the first person to make her feel valued and help her believe in her own potential.

Mrs. Duncan’s encouragement and support profoundly affected Oprah, helping to shape her into the confident and booming media mogul she is today. Oprah attributes much of her early development and later success to the positive influence

of this dedicated teacher.

Peter Musso is a dedicated Upper School teacher who has spent the last twenty years looking at each new day as an opportunity to impact his students at NSU University School positively. His greatest satisfaction is witnessing his students’ development, ability to achieve their aspirations, and encounters with authentic happiness along their educational journey.

Peter’s commitment to Upper School remains steadfast. Both of his daughters are graduates. He continues to share his 33 years of teaching expertise by instructing in Sports Medicine and Human Anatomy/Physiology. Additionally, Peter expresses gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside his wife, Allison, at the school, emphasizing the strong familial and professional connections that have enriched their lives.

Peter Musso believes that fostering a love for learning involves teaching with unwavering passion, practicing openness and honesty, serving as a model of success, demonstrating character, instilling confidence, actively listening, deeply caring, inspiring students, and maintaining a strong belief in their potential.

Peter engages with students personally and demonstrates a sincere interest in who they are as unique individuals. Alison Dolberg, a Lower School Teacher at NSU University School, has dedicated 32 years to igniting a love for learning in her students. Her creativity and enthusiasm are well-known, as she consistently designs engaging lessons and provides daily hands-on experiences for her students. When students enter Mrs. Dolberg’s classroom, they are not just greeted, they are warmly welcomed into a world of exploration and differentiated instruction, enriching their academic journey.

Alison’s favorite aspect of teaching is the collaborative environment, where she works alongside other exceptional professionals to plan, develop, and orchestrate meaningful lessons. But what truly brings her immense joy is witnessing her students form lasting connections with both teachers and classmates. This is what Alison cherishes most about teaching. She believes that the greatest gift she receives as an educator is seeing a child embracing the learning journey.

In elementary school, Alison faced reading difficulties due to her eyesight, but an amazing tutor stepped in and equipped her with the tools and strategies needed to succeed. This transformative experience ignited her determination to make a difference in students’ lives. She believed that her empathy for those with learning differences or needing extra support could be a guiding light. Alison credits her career choice to the dedicated teachers she encountered during her elementary school years, who had the most profound influence on her path.

For the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition, Pride embodies its mission to foster an inclusive environment where the LGBTQ+ community is protected and celebrated for their contributions to society.

In the vibrant landscape of Broward County, the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition shines brightly, charting a progressive course through its collaborative endeavors. Founded in December 2020, this coalition stands as a testament to its members’ unwavering commitment to promoting safety, inclusion, and understanding for the LGBTQ+ community within law enforcement agencies, fire rescue departments, and various levels of government organizations at the city, state, and federal levels. As we celebrate Pride Month and reflect on the strides made in the fight for equality, it’s crucial to recognize the pivotal role played by this coalition in championing LGBTQ+ rights.

For over half a century, our community has celebrated Pride, which commemorates the Stonewall Uprising on June 28th, 55 years ago. Since 1969, we have made great strides in our quest for equality, from marriage, the right to adopt and build a family, jobs, housing, and healthcare security to the right to serve in the military while being true to ourselves—all in under 55 years. The public acceptance of our community has been swift but not complete and certainly not without pushback.

Embracing Pride & Fighting for Equality

and “Silence = Death” still looms overhead. The differences between 2024 and 1969 are enormous, but we cannot take our eyes off those filled with prejudice, hate, and anger. As other nations institute the death penalty for their LGBTQ+ populations, we can be sure that like-minded people are in our midst as well. Keeping our organizations well-funded, our institutions healthy, and our community informed is not simply an option but a necessity.

As we look to the future and the next 50+ years, we can celebrate that we are a talented community able to stand up for itself. We must never forget that our community thrives in every other community regardless of color, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, or place of origin. We are on all sides of every issue and carry the good and bad of the world in which we live. Those shared experiences give us strength. It allows us to be the world’s unifiers, even in these most divided times.

We even have a month dedicated to our efforts toward global unification: June is Pride Month. We have the opportunity to bring everyone under the rainbow flag, for those colors represent not only the LGBTQ+ population but everyone. We know how these other people think, how they feel, and why they act as they do. They are our parents, siblings, neighbors, and friends. We work with and live with them, and by welcoming them under our rainbow tent, we give them the communit y they seek.

Yes, we have a great deal more to do to protect our LGBTQ+ family from those who fear us because of who we love. Still, by being more inclusive, by being more welcoming, by reminding

others we are all more alike than we are different, and by holding to our belief that we are all the colors of the rainbow, we can weaken the grasp of hate and expand the meaning of liberation and Pride. So, this June, wherever you are, invite everyone you know to Pride; it should not matter who they love.

United Way of Broward County is a dedicated supporter of Pride Month, an annual celebration that honors the LGBTQ+ rights movement, highlights LGBTQ+ culture, and encourages everyone to embrace their true selves.

Recognizing the importance of LGBTQ+ individuals’ well-being in enhancing the quality of life in Broward County, United Way funds numerous partner organizations and agencies that support their mental and physical health.

One of these esteemed partner organizations is SunServe (www.sunserve.org) in Wilton Manors. Established in 2002 as the first agency providing social services to the LGBTQ+ community in South Florida, SunServe is a collective of advocates, allies, and champions for economically disadvantaged and marginalized youth, families, adults, and seniors.

Why is it important to have a social service agency dedicated to the needs of the LGBTQ+ community?

Grants from United Way of Broward County support our health and wellness programs and enable us to connect clients to clinicians who treat LGBTQ+ individuals with respect and understanding.

Over the past two decades, we have supported the health of thousands in the LGBTQ+ community and their families, friends, loved ones, spouses, parents, children, coworkers, employers, and businesses.

When people thrive, our entire community thrives. Empowering just one person can bring about enormous changes in the collective mindset. Much like the United Way of Broward County, we are building a healthier Broward County for everyone who lives here.

What does Pride Month mean to you?

Pride Month is a platform that empowers people and a time to acknowledge the progress we have made and the progress still needed. When I participate in a Pride event, I experience a celebration of inclusion—it’s LGBTQ+ people, allies, supporters, and heteronormative people.

Pride is a celebration of everyone’s rights and freedoms. At SunServe, we celebrate Pride 365 days a year, and I know United Way of Broward County does as well.

How does United Way of Broward County support SunServe’s great work?

The teams at United Way are fantastic allies. Several of SunServe’s programs are entirely reliant on support from them. The needs in Broward County are tremendous, our caseload is increasing exponentially, and we are available to our clients 24/7. Because of United Way, SunServe is expanding its reach and impact. STORM ALERT: PREPARING FOR A BUSY HURRICANE SEASON IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Hurricane Season Begins June 1:

According to weather forecasts from Colorado State University’s Tropical Weather and Climate Research department, we can expect a busy hurricane season for 2024. You can find the data here: https://tropical. colostate.edu/forecasting.html.

They anticipate 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes. As South Florida learned from Hurricane Andrew in 1992, it only takes one bad storm to wreak havoc on entire swaths of the state. Please prepare now so that you can be self-sufficient in the aftermath of severe weather for at least 72 hours. It can take that long for first responders to reach homes when trees, traffic lights, and power lines are down, water levels are high, and debris is clogging the roads.

DISTRICT 96 UPDATE

On Tuesday, May 7, State Senator Tina Polsky and I held a town hall meeting in the Commission Chambers at Coral Springs City Hall, where residents were able to learn about the recent Legislative Session and voice their comments, questions, and concerns directly to their legislators. The Senator and I started with a brief Session overview and then spent time answering questions. The main issue attendees wanted to hear about was property insurance, and unfortunately there isn’t much good news to share on this front. While many good proposals were put forward by the minority party, these proposals did not get the hearing they deserved. We will continue to work on this important issue.

My legislative priorities for 2024 began with Jaime’s Law, which I have filed yearly since 2019. HB 145 would require background checks on the sale or transfer of ammunition to help prevent tragedies like the one that took the life of Jaime Guttenberg, the bill’s namesake, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.

Some additional bills I introduced:

HB 161 Payments for Health Care Providers and Surgical Procedures under Workers’ Compensation:

Increases maximum amounts of certain witness fees related to workers' compensation cases; increases maximum reimbursements for physicians and surgical procedures under workers' compensation. This is the first substantive change to the workers’ compensation system in 25 years and will encourage more providers to enter the space. This bill was passed and signed into law.

HB 765 Leave of Absence to Officials and Employees:

Provides that certain public officials and employees may receive full pay for leave of absence relating to active federal military service that lasts a certain length of time. This bill passed and as of this writing is waiting for the Governor’s signature.

HB 903 Educator Certification and Training (Expanding FERTES):

Revises provisions relating to teacher and educator preparation programs, educator certification requirements, and educator in-service training to require certified educators to receive training relating to mass casualty incidents. This bill will be filed again next year.

HB 915 Outpatient Mental Health Services:

Empowers courts to order outpatient treatment for misdemeanors, enhances criteria for involuntary inpatient placement, and emphasizes continuous monitoring and evaluation. This bill was incorporated into HB 7021 and ultimately passed.

HB 983 Public Records Exemption for Clerks of the Courts:

Introduces an exemption from public records requirements for personal identification and location information of current or former clerks of the circuit court, their deputy clerks, and personnel. Notably, it extends this protection to their spouses and children as well. This bill passed and is awaiting the Governor’s signature.

HB 999 Post Trial Counseling Services for Jurors:

Creates an optional post-trial counseling program for jurors who have experienced testimony of a disturbing nature.

To summarize, the Legislature passed a number of the bills I sponsored this past Session, more than that of any other Representative from the Democratic Party. I was also able to secure over 2.8 million dollars in the 2024 State Budget on behalf of my constituents. As a public servant, my number one goal is to benefit both our community and the state.
