“Every year the Arts Council is delighted to bring Celebrate the Arts Day, and many other creative events, to inspire, entertain and support our whole Weston community,” stated Arts Council President Jami Nix Rahn. Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation and liaison to the Arts Council, added that “the City of Weston is happy to participate and make it possible for all activities at this special family event to be free for everyone.” Young At Art Museum will return with its open-air studio. It offers painting, a pottery wheel, print-making and other creative artistic activities for visitors to try. Guests can learn new skills, experience new techniques and even take home their own creations. The hands-on program also features interactive booths such ceramics, art, robotics, rocketry and more. On Friday, January 19th, Tequesta Trace Park will be transformed into a winter wonderland for the sixth annual Weston Winter Safety Expo. Officers and equipment from the SWAT team, Bomb Squad, Florida Department of Fish & Wildlife, Florida Highway Patrol, Marine Patrol, and Tactical Rescue are scheduled to appear. Members of the Weston CERT (Citizens Emergency Response Team) will also be on hand.

The Winter Safety Expo will offer informational booths and displays educating the Weston community on all the resources available to keep them safe. There will be a variety of attractions and activities as well, including South Florida-style ice skating, a winter wonderland themed photo area, entertainment, music, dancing, children’s activities and games, and much more. The highlight of the evening will be a sky full of glistening snowflakes. Be sure to bring your camera, because for many Weston children this will be their first time seeing snow. Weston Philharmonic Society Hosts Jazz Jamboree BY STACEY BOMSER

he Weston Philharmonic Society presents Jazz Jamboree on Saturday, January 27th. Patrons will enjoy an afternoon of delicious jazz and delectable desserts. The musical matinee features The Lowell Ringel Jazz Trio from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Lowell Ringel is a bassist, composer, and music educator who is beginning to emerge in the national jazz landscape. He is the winner of three Downbeat Magazine Student awards and earned first place at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. Ringel is joined by pianist Jake Shapiro. The doctoral candidate is also a first-place winner at the Next Generation Jazz Festival and recipient of three Downbeat Awards. Rounding out the trio is drummer Kyle Swan. He has had the privilege of performing at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Jalisco Jazz Festival and Montreal Jazz Festival. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. he spring selection of films has been announced for Moonlight Movies in the Park. Students Can Develop STEM Skills with Weston Community Center Classes BY STACEY BOMSER

he Weston Community Center offers a wide variety of programs sure to appeal to all ages and interests. The new spring schedule features activities focused on the arts, athletics and academics, including two classes promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills for children. This season there will be two separate Code Explorers programs. PK Sensor and Robotic Programming is specially designed for children ages four and five. Children will explore, learn and experiment with computer engineering, while learning the basic elements of computer programming sequencing, sound integration, and movement programming. The Electrical Engineering class is for older students, with one session for six to nine-year-old’s and another for children ages ten to 13. Students in this program will explore, learn and experiment with circuitry and digital electronics, in addition to learning about electrical components. The class will also cover the theory behind electrical circuits such as Ohm Law, Kirchhoff Law, DC vs AC current, integrated circuits and more. Buildbots Robotics is another STEM program. In this class, students ages six to 14 will explore the magic of Lego Robotics and apply knowledge to design, build and program robots to solve challenges. This class combines creativity, design, logic, teamwork, scalability and problem-solving skills.

With its location inside Weston Regional Park, the community center is a natural place for children to take part in athletic and fitness programs. The First Tee golf program teaches basic golf skills and fundamentals through an innovative curriculum developed by The First Tee in collaboration with the PGA, LPGA, Champions Tour and Masters Association. The Nike Marathon Kids Running Club helps children create a lifelong commitment to physical activity. This fun fitness program sets realistic goals and provides rewards and incentives for reaching those goals. In addition to coordinating the golf and running programs, Kidokinetics offers two popular athletic programs. The community center’s Youth Karate class teaches children the basic principles of USA Goju Karate including self-defense, fighting, and weaponry to build confidence and self-esteem. Other programs include the Advanced Performance Ensemble for

aspiring thespians, presented by the Inside Out Theatre Company. Superstars Dance and Baton is a high-energy class incorporating cheerleading, baton twirling and dance. Chess Club challenges young minds while also improving memory, self-confidence, intuition, concentration, logical and critical thinking, and reasoning skills. Fun in Spanish allows children, ages two to five, to learn and practice Spanish in a playful, musical and artistic environment. Weston Community Center Expands Adult Offerings BY STACEY BOMSER

he Weston Community Center offers a variety of adult programs promoting health and wellness and fostering friendships. It’s a place where people can learn new skills and try new activities – and all at a very reasonable price, if not for free. “The Community Center provides a space for residents to connect, learn and grow,” states Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation. The new Posture and Alignment Class is appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. Taught by Physical Therapist and Posture Alignment Specialist Randee Engelhard, BS, MPT, PAS, this class is designed to promote proper alignment and correct posture through active muscle engagement that can reduce or eliminate pain. The exercises are based upon the Egoscue Method and involve the use of props designed to help decrease the rotations of the trunk and pelvis, improve rounding of the shoulders, and normalize the curves of the spine. one session or two sessions per week for the eightweek program. For those looking for more physical activity, there is an Adult Karate program. This USA Goju Karate class focuses on the basic principles of self-defense, kata, fighting, and weaponry. It’s ideal for those seeking strength, conditioning and flexibility, as well as for building confidence and self-esteem. Students can create a beautiful work of art in the Watercolor Painting class. Award-winning watercolor-

Seniors have the opportunity for social interaction and recreation through the Weston Community Center’s partnership with the Weston 55+ Club. Nike Marathon Kids Running Club Promotes Fun & Fitness BY STACEY BOMSER

his is the time of year when many adults make New Year’s resolutions to exercise more. Why not let that commitment to fitness extend to the whole family by registering your children for the Nike Marathon Kids Running Club at the Weston Community Center? Getting kids active at a young age is critical to creating a lifelong commitment to physical activity. The Nike Marathon Kids Running Club is a fun, simple and effective program that does just that. It is dedicated to improving the health of kids by providing the tools, motivation and support to live happier, healthier lifestyles. Kidokinetics runs the Nike Marathon Kids Running Club at the Weston Community Center. Now in its second year, Kidokinetics Founder Terri Braun says she has received positive feedback from parents about how great the program is, “and the kids love it!” The goal of the program is to train children to run the equivalent of a full marathon, 26.2 miles, over the course of the school year, but kids can join at any time. The next session starts January 17th. “We set individual goals for each child, so someone starting now may only run the equivalent of a 10K or half-marathon,” explains Braun. “We teach the tell children it’s okay to walk; everyone goes at their proper techniques to run and how to breathe. We own pace.”

Incentives and rewards are provided to help runners reach their goal. “For every mile they run they get a little charm to hang on their water bottle or backpack,” explains Braun. “We also give out special charms to motivate children to accomplish the equivalent of a 5K, 10K, or half marathon. When children complete a full marathon, 26.2 miles, they get a Nike t-shirt and shoelaces.” In addition to running, the Nike Marathon Kids Running Club promotes overall fitness. Braun says only 15-20 minutes of each class are dedicated to running. “The rest of the class consists of stations and other activities with exercises such as jumping jacks and sit-ups. We are constantly working the entire body.” Braun says the Nike Marathon Kids Running Club is a great program for children looking to start a physical activity or those involved with other popular sports such as soccer and basketball. “Running will develop endurance that will aid in training for all other athletic activities.” The Nike Marathon Kids Running Club is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. The Importance of Home Staging BY ROSE SKLAR

hinking of selling your home? What home improvement will give you the most bang for the buck? In today’s real estate market, the key to getting top dollar for your property is called staging. Start with the curb appeal. Paint the front door, change out the door knockers, trim the landscape and put in fresh mulch and flowers. Stress appearance, not function. Create the illusion of space by neutralizing colors, removing any heavy draperies or ornate light fixtures. Clean the windows and open the shades. Remove personal items. Take out old bulky wall units, refresh linens and towels, and most importantly, clean and de-clutter. Renovations to sell with the best return on investment include the kitchen and bathroom. According to HGTV, small bathrooms and kitchen renovations recoup at near 100%. Not up to a complete remodel? I recommend a “mini face lift”, which involves a range of improvements starting with small cosmetic repairs, prioritizing kitchen and bathroom hardware and light fixtures, followed by countertops and backsplash. Try reglazing ugly tubs and vanities. Refacing or painting cabinets and installing new appliances, if necessary, work like a charm. According to Home Stager Lori Cesario, “When selling, appearance is more important than function. It is better to put that $800 into paint or flooring, rather than a new water heater. A new water heater will not impress buyers. If a home inspector says the water heater must be replaced, you can always replace it then, or knock off an equivalent amount from the sale price. But appearance is something that is not negotiable, and in fact is something that may only register with home buyers on a subconscious level.” The best money spent on a home is to paint it. Faux paint and dark out of date colors are a turn off. Millennial’s, in particular, account for 30% of current home sales and they do not want their parents’ or grandparents’ home. According to Jill Gold, stager from House Styling & Staging, your home will sell 78% faster if staged, based on statistics from the Real Estate Staging Association. “That means 30 days on the market versus 100 days. Your home’s final selling price will be 6% to 10% more money. That means if your home is worth $600,000, you stand to gain (or not lose on markdowns) $36,000 to $60,000. The price for staging is usually far less than your first price reduction.” Nearly all home buyers (95%) look online to decide which homes to tour. Your home will lose about 1% a month while on the market, according to Zillow. A vacant home must add carrying costs to that amount: mortgage, lawn care, HOA dues, electric, water, insurance, etc. Home staging services cost only one-half to 1% of home value. So let’s recap. Agents are much more likely to show a home that they know is staged and the buyers are much more likely to identify a home to see that is staged. The best home improvement projects and mini facelifts are those that make the home more functional and enjoyable. Stand Up and Be Counted at Temple Dor Dorim’s 20th Annual Mitzvah Day BY STACEY BOMSER

his is the 20th anniversary of Mitzvah Day at Temple Dor Dorim. The event began as a way for the congregation to help those in need, but over the years it has grown into a community-wide effort with all ages and all faiths coming together to make a difference. Everyone in Weston is invited to “stand up and be counted” on January 21st when the synagogue hosts this annual day of giving. “Over the years, the congregation of Temple Dor Dorim and the Weston community has helped thousands of people in need by coming together on this one day each year, making a huge impact in the community,” shares Mitzvah Day Chair Lisa Lerner. “Let’s come together this year and grow those numbers.” To date, Mitzvah Day has resulted in over 300 military care packages to benefit Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, 300 blankets for AmeriCares, 1,000 bag lunches for LifeNet4Families, hundreds of meals for the Ronald McDonald House, 150 pints of blood donated and over 100 people added to the Bone Marrow Registry. In addition, through bake sales, car washes and other efforts, Mitzvah Day has collected thousands of dollars in donations for the Dan Marino Foundation for Autism, Juvenile Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, Make-A-Wish, Best Buddies, Hand in Hand for Haiti, and other worthy charities.

This year’s projects include collecting donations for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico, selling homebaked dog biscuits to benefit the Humane Society of Broward County, adopt-a-dog by Good Karma Pet Rescue, and collecting shoes for In Jacob’s Shoes. “From making sandwiches to feeding the hungry, and painting houses for foster children to preparing meals at the Ronald McDonald House, each and every project has provided help to people in need and provided a teaching lesson for our children and community,” notes Lerner. She encourages all Weston residents to participate in this year’s program, either by volunteering or simply donating. Lerner promises Mitzvah Day will be the “Feel Good” day of 2018. “You will feel good – warm inside – knowing that you woke up that day and truly helped someone in need. No matter how big or small the project was, it helped someone,” states Lerner. “It also feels good because you are with your kids, teaching them a life lesson of giving back; to not sit there and let someone else take care of it. No matter how old you are, you can make a difference.” While the Hebrew word “mitzvah” literally means commandment, it has come to mean “good deed.” Lerner says Temple Dor Dorim’s Mitzvah Day is a chance for everyone to start the new year completing a good deed. Harvest Drive’s 25th Anniversary Was Cause For Celebration BY STACEY BOMSER

t’s hard to believe that the Harvest Drive started as a humble canned food collection at Country Isles Elementary School 25 years ago. Now entering its 26th season, it has grown into a year-round endeavor feeding thousands of families in need throughout Broward County, including right here in our own backyard. “Our mission has always been to teach children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others,” explains Harvest Drive, Inc., Founder Renee Herman. “And, once again, our students really came through for us! We set a record – serving more than 2,600 families this past Thanksgiving.” She says the 2017 Harvest Drive was the most successful to date, which was important because the need was greater than ever. Herman says the program is now assisting families from Puerto Rico and the Caribbean who relocated to Weston, and other parts of Broward County, after being forced from their homes following last season’s catastrophic hurricanes. Thanks to the generosity of the community, recipient families received a complete Thanksgiving meal along with a week’s worth of groceries and basic household necessities. Herman says there was such an outpouring of support that Harvest Drive was able

Herman was also overwhelmed by the volume of donations to the Harvest Boutique. She says the Weston community heard the call and generously donated gently used toys and books, as well as children’s clothing. “It was heartwarming to see these families, who waited patiently in line for hours to take their turn shopping at the Harvest Boutique. They were truly blessed when they walked out.” While the holidays may be over, Harvest Drive continues as Herman is quick to point out that hunger is a year-round issue. Approximately every six weeks, Harvest Drive teams up with a local business or agency to assemble Helping Hands Crisis Boxes. Is It Safe For Me To Begin Exercising? BY DEREK HUGHES, MS, RD/LDN, CSCS

oliday season body weight gain is one of the many reasons that New Year’s resolutions often include exercise. Getting enough physical activity is definitely important for our well-being, but so is doing it safely. Doing too much too soon can make your muscles excessively sore, forcing you back off of your new regimen, and could even result in serious injury or death. Here are a few things to ask yourself before diving into a new exercise program: Has a doctor ever said you have a heart condition and that you should only do doctor-approved physical activity? Have you felt pain in the chest when not being active, or felt recent chest discomfort while you were doing physical activity? Do you ever lose consciousness or lose your balance due to dizziness? Has your blood pressure been high? Are you currently prescribed medication for your blood pressure or a heart condition? Do you have a bone or joint problem that could be made worse by a change in your physical activity level? Are you currently pregnant or suffering from a significant illness? If none of these situations describe you, then you should be able to safely ease into additional activity. After your body adjusts to the new activity, you could progressively challenge your body by including a few hills, a fast-paced walk, or insert brief jogs between slower walking segments of the workout. We start life crawling before we walk, and master that before we run. Likewise, it is seldom appropriate to start back trying to bench press 300 pounds or doing all-out sprints on our first week back in action. When it comes to increasing our fitness levels, slow and steady is the way to win the race. Weston University Students Suit-up for Fire & Emergency Services Day BY STACEY BOMSER

t’s not very often that high school students get to play dress-up, but the 22 students enrolled in the Weston University program got to do just that during their visit to Weston Fire Rescue Station No. 55. On Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services Day, students visited with Weston BSO firefighters and paramedics where they learned how physically demanding and academically challenging their jobs are. The day began at City Hall with a welcome and overview by Weston District Fire Chief Bruce Angier. Afterwards, Fire Marshal Adam Bloch spoke to

students about fire safety planning for homes and businesses. Photos courtesy City of Weston. The morning concluded with a presentation by Life Safety Educator Melanie Brocato on the various programs BSO Fire Rescue provides such as CPR classes, dangers of distracted driving presentations, car seat installations, and more. Weston U then visited Station #55 for some handson training. Students used a fire extinguisher to put out a simulated grill fire, used the fire hose to

experience the weight of the equipment, donned part of the 80-pound fire gear, and took a ride in the aerial ladder for a bird’s eye view of Weston. The students toured the rescue vehicles, where they learned about the equipment and medications Firefighter/EMT’s use when saving lives. Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services Day concluded with an interactive demonstration using the “Jaws of Life” (hydraulic cutters) on a damaged vehicle to illustrate to students the effort needed to rescue victims from a car after an accident. This month, Weston University students study Weston’s Development Services, including Planning & Zoning and Engineering, with a visit to Calvin, Giordano & Associates. Last month, the class learned about the City’s community services and public works department.

Weston Recognized for Superior Safety BY STACEY BOMSER

nce again, the City of Weston has been recognized for its superior safety. The 2017 SafeWise Report ranked Weston as the #3 Safest City in Florida. SafeWise considers itself to be the authority on safety and home security news. To identify the 20 safest cities in Florida, it reviewed 2015 FBI crime report statistics and population data, eliminating all cities with fewer than 3,000 residents. SafeWise then narrowed its list based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larcenytheft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. Weston had 0.37 violent crimes and 6.21 property crimes per 1,000 people. Those figures are well below the national average of 3.83 violent crimes and 24.87 property crimes per 1,000 people. What’s even more impressive is that Weston has the highest population of the cities on the list, with 70,000 residents. Of the top ten cities, all the others were under 30,000 residents. That fact was highlighted in the SafeWise Report: “There’s a misconception that larger cities aren’t as safe as smaller ones, which isn’t always the case, and Weston—the

Broward Sheriff’s Office Shred-A-Thon Yields Big Results BY STACEY BOMSER

ne of the reason’s Weston is continuously named one of the safest cities in which to live is because of its low crime rate. This is due in part to residents’ vigilance in protecting their personal property and identity. Hundreds of people participated in the Broward Sheriff’s Office recent ShredA-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet in Weston. BSO hosts these events at locations throughout the county. Shred-A-Thon helps reduce crime by shredding sensitive documents as a proactive step to reduce the risk of identity theft. Participants can safely destroy personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain sensitive data. During the Weston event, residents were able to shred up to five boxes of documents. Operation Medicine Cabinet provides residents with the opportunity to safely dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medications. BSO encourages participation in this program rather than throwing out or flushing medications because if prescription medication gets into the water system, it can be bad for the environment. Another benefit to Operation Medicine Cabinet is that it reduces incidents of theft. Prescription drug abuse is on the rise, especially among teens because

prescription drugs are easier for kids to get than illegal drugs. For many, it’s as easy as opening the medicine cabinet. Officials say one in four teens have misused or abused a prescription drug and prescription drugs account for more overdose deaths than street drugs. Programs such as Operation Medicine Cabinet, with its no questions asked policy, are proving successful in keeping prescription drugs off the streets. According to BSO, 428 vehicles participated in the drive-through Shred-AThon and Operation Medicine Cabinet at the Weston Police Services Center. A total of 22,680 pounds of documents were shredded by SafeGuard and 434 pounds of medicines were properly disposed of – that’s an increase of 134 pounds of medication and 2,460 pounds of documents over last year. We all live in Weston because we consider it a special place. That means different things to different people, but how the City is maintained is an integral part of its appeal. We have many projects underway and many in the pipeline, which help keep Weston ranked as one of the premier places to live in America. Projects to maintain or enhance our infrastructure include upgrades to parks and City facilities such as the newly installed playground and artificial turf fields at Tequesta Trace Park; two artificial turf soccer fields and the initiation of a design for a new Community Center in Regional Park; the redesign of Indian Trace Park; the installation of a restroom at Peace Mound Park; renovations to our three Fire Stations, our Police Station and Public Works facility, and the construction of a new Fire Station in Bonaventure. These improvements are designed to maintain property values and enhance lifestyle. With the winter weather in south Florida come a host of City events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. The 2018 Weston Winter Safety Expo will be held on Friday, January 19th from 6-8:30PM at Tequesta Trace Park, 600 Indian Trace. Once again, a unique phenomenon takes place within Weston … snow! Join us for an educational and activity-filled evening in a temperate blizzard-like environment that includes ice skating south Florida style. “All the big toys” of the Broward Sheriff’s Office and multiple law enforcement agencies will be present. There will also be bounce houses, a winter wonderland photo area, informational booths and displays, music and entertainment all packaged into one event not to be missed. The WestonNights Free Outdoor Concert Series in the Park continues with live music on Saturday, February 3rd and March 10th. Both concerts will be held at the Event Stage in Weston Regional Park from 7-10PM. Every WestonNights event has food trucks for a complete night out. On February 24th, the Dallas Brass ensemble returns to Weston after inspiring audiences and young musicians around the country with classical, Dixieland, swing, Broadway and patriotic music, and on March 11th we host a free outdoor performance by the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra in Weston Town Center. Wintertime in Weston has spectacular weather and we have equally spectacular events to go with it: the ever-popular free monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April along with the Weston Foreign Film Series, free professional puppet shows and magic shows, Celebrate the Arts Day, Weston World Fest, the annual Royal Egg Hunt and much more. Mayor Encourages Middle School Students To Ponder Political Life BY STACEY BOMSER

ost middle schoolers dream of becoming professional athletes or pop stars, but how many seventh graders ponder life as a local politician? That’s exactly what the Florida League of Mayors and the Florida League of Cities are asking students to do through a statewide essay contest titled “If I were elected Mayor…” Students must describe how they would make a difference as mayor and how Home Rule (the authority to make local decisions at the local level) helps make their city a great place to live. Weston Mayor Dan Stermer hopes many Weston students will enter. “This contest is an excellent opportunity for students to have their voice heard in local government and for city leaders to see from a student’s perspective what they feel is important and what they would do differently.”

The essay contest is open to all seventh grade students who attend a public or private school, or who are home schooled. It specifically targets this age group because civic education is a required subject taught in all Florida public middle schools. The City of Weston is a strong proponent of civic education. “Getting students involved in local government has always been a passion for our City which is why we have run the Weston University program for high school students since 2002,” states Mayor Stermer. “This contest for seventh graders only builds on that commitment.” Essay entries must begin with the statement, “If I were elected Mayor…”, can be no more than 250 words long, must fit on one page, and should be typed. Only one entry per student. Essays will be judged based on creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought, and appropriate gram-

mar, spelling and essay construction. Winners will be chosen by a committee of the Florida League of Mayors board. The first place winner will receive a $100 gift card and have a chance to be “Mayor for a Day” in his or her city. The second place winner will receive a $50 gift card and the third place winner will receive a $25 gift card. Every student who participates will receive a certificate. In addition to the prizes, the top three winners will receive a joint resolution from the Florida League of Cities and Florida League of Mayors to be presented by their mayor at a hometown commission meeting. The first, second and third place essays will also be published in the Florida League of Cities’ Quality Cities magazine and posted on the Florida League of Mayors’ website. Indian Trace Elementary Kindergarten Students Are Reading Ready BY STACEY BOMSER

tudents enter kindergarten with varying degrees of reading readiness. At Indian Trace Elementary, teachers have adopted a balanced literacy directive to ensure all students develop fundamental reading skills. Kindergarten Team Leader Jennifer Damas says examples of balanced literacy are evident inside – and outside – of each classroom. One of the most notable examples is the hallbraries. “When the students walk in to their building in the morning, they are given an opportunity to pick a book from the hallbrary to read quietly while they wait for the bell to ring,” explains Mrs. Damas. “Kindergarten

students who are not reading yet are encouraged to tell the story based on the pictures in the book. This teaches students that anyone could be a reader and introduces students to a love for reading.” Teachers further foster that love of reading inside the classroom using leveled classroom libraries, interactive read-a-louds, small and whole group reading instruction, literacy centers and writer’s workshop. “Each component of our reading block is essential in meeting the needs of every child and ensuring that each child reaches their full potential by the end of their kindergarten year,” states Mrs. Damas, explaining that teachers use the Benchmark Assessment System to determine students’ reading level and then work with small groups of no more than four students at equal level on appropriate instructional activities. While the teacher is working with a small reading group, the other students work at the daily five/literacy centers. “These are carefully planned and include the following five choices: read to self; read to someone; word work; work on writing; and listening to read,” explains Mrs. Damas. “These are all choices that students work on independently.”

The classroom library is another important component of the balanced literacy program. Each teacher has cultivated a library that includes picture books, ABC books, counting books, nursery rhymes, realistic fiction books, folktales, poetry books, nonfiction books, and much more. Each library contains books of different degrees of difficulty, so students can choose books based on their reading level. Mrs. Damas says despite the teachers’ best efforts, reading readiness also develops at home. “Parents can help their children by reading a bedtime story daily. It is important for children to have a role model at home to guide them towards the love of reading. Stopping periodically while reading a story and asking questions will help enhance the child’s reading comprehension.”

Falcon Cove Middle School Dominates at Speech and Debate Tournaments BY STACEY BOMSER

alcon Cove Middle School is quickly earning a reputation as a speech and debate powerhouse school. The fledgling program started just four years ago, and the trophy case is already filled with dozens of awards. According to Debate Advisor Jennifer Daily, “This is the fourth year of the Falcon Cove Middle School Debate program, which is made up of only eighth graders. It’s the second year in which sixth and seventh graders are able to join the Speech program.” In addition to helping students develop public speaking, critical thinking and listening skills, the speech and debate courses create knowledgeable and worldly students. Local, national and world politics are often discussed during class. The curriculum also includes learning the various types of speech (extemporaneous and original oratory) and debate (Congress, Lincoln Douglas, and Public Forum). “The students go over every event in class and then get to decide which event they want to participate in,” explains Ms. Daily. “If they don’t like the event they chose, they can choose

a different one for the next tournament.” To prepare for competition, students conduct research and work with other students in the same

event to practice their speeches and cases. Ms. Daily says members of Cypress Bay High School’s nationally-ranked Debate Club often mentor the middle school students. “They come over as often as possible to work one-on-one with the Falcon Cove students.” Ms. Daily says about 40 of the students enrolled in

the Debate and Speech courses compete in monthly tournaments, which are typically held afterschool or on Saturdays. Falcon Cove has had a successful start to this year’s season. The school won 13 medals from its first tournament. Esha Jain and Beatriz Navas each earned medals in Congress. Mahathi Konda, Sean Behling and Tanish Bandre medaled in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Andrew Grub, Gregory Cohen, Colin Morrill and Mateo Aristizabal all placed in Public Forum debate. Sara Faruqui and Stefano De Castro received awards for Extemporaneous speaking, while Tess Segal and Ana-Victoria Gomez won in Original Oratory. Falcon Cove took home 17 medals from its second tournament. Gabriela Charry won for Congress. In Lincoln Douglas debate, Tanish Bandre, Mahathi Konda, Jordana Kotler, and Shana Xia all received medals. Public Forum debate wins went to Grace Baek and Priya Khatri, Gregory Cohen and Sean Behling, Lauren Kotler and Sofia Guttmann, as well as Emmett Rosenblum and Jonathan Cohen. In Original Oratory speech, Stefano De Castro, Mia Chacon, Ana-Victoria Gomez, and Allison Fintz all won medals.

Weston Elementary Schools Support Harvest Drive BY STACEY BOMSER

he Harvest Drive got its start here in Weston 25 years ago at Country Isles Elementary School. What began as a canned food drive organized by three PTA moms with a vision to teach young children the importance of giving back to their community has expanded into a countywide effort providing holiday meals to more than 2,600 families in need. While every school in Weston has now joined the effort, Country Isles remains as committed to this cause as it was back in 1992 when Harvest Drive first started. “Harvest Drive is Country Isles Elementary students with a very special time at Harvest Drive Founder Renee Herman. It is a wonderful time of year with great memories.” In addition to generous donations of non-perishable foods, Country Isles families supported the cause donating $1,150 through the school’s Tacos for Turkeys family night and leaf donations. Film Sparks Mental Health Discussion at Cypress Bay BY JESSIE CHAIET, STUDENT WRITER

s part of the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) initiative #BCPSListens, Cypress Bay High School showcased the movie Listen: It Only Takes a Moment. The film’s writer, director and producer, Erahm Christopher, said he was happy to be a part of this initiative in order to promote mental health awareness. “I think the Broward County Public School district is doing something that no other public school district is doing in the country,” Christopher said. “I think they’re focusing on approaching the idea of mental health in a way that is really how students want to talk about it; it’s sparking a dialogue that people are afraid to have.” Listen tells the story of several teenagers at a high school; it depicts their struggles with mental health and their relationships with their parents and those around them. “There are teenagers that are dying for people to listen to them,” Christopher said. “I think that if I can create a film that basically

sparks these conversations that teenagers need to have, then I actually believe it can save some lives.” BCPS Cadre Director Michael Ramirez is responsible for executing this initiative, which began on October 24 and will end on February 8. During that time, Listen will be played at 29 Broward County schools. “We began the initiative because we saw a great need not only in our school district but across our communities and across the country around the issue of mental health,” Ramirez said. After each screening of the movie, Christopher held a discussion with his audience. “I think it’s important to help the audience realize that we’re all thinking the same way once the film is over. My hope is that if that conversation will start in the auditorium, it will continue throughout the campus, at home and in the community.” Members of the Helping Overcome Problems Efficiently (HOPE) Sunshine Club volunteered at the screenings. “I love doing these events

because you get to help people, you get to hear other people’s stories,” senior and Public Relations Manager of the HOPE club Laura Tavano said. “We want students to know that if someone is having a problem at home or at school, there’s a club where you can find a safe space.” Christopher said he hopes the movie is shown at schools all around the United States in the future. “I hope Listen spreads across the nation because I think it would be incredible for the youth to own this. I want the youth to take this film like it’s theirs and use it like a megaphone for how they feel.” Jessie Chaiet is a junior at Cypress Bay High School. Student Government Association Is Driving Force Behind Cypress Bay’s Harvest Drive BY STACEY BOMSER

he Harvest Drive celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017 and for the past five years Cypress Bay High School has been helping feed families in need right here in our community and across Broward County. The school’s Student Government Association organizes the annual fall food drive at Cypress Bay. According to Harvest Drive Chairperson Emily Fischgrund, a junior, more than 80 school clubs participated, along with Falcon Cove Middle School and Everglades Elementary School. Together, they were

able to collect enough non-perishable food items to provide a full Thanksgiving meal, plus a week’s worth of groceries and household items, to 175 families. “We helped 103 families that live in Weston and have children that attend one of our schools within the city limits,” explains Emily. “In addition, we provided for 72 families with children who attend Fort Lauderdale High School.” In order to collect all of the needed stuffing and gravy, cranberries and sweet potatoes, as well as peanut butter and jelly, pasta, rice, cereal, soup, laundry detergent, toiletries and other items, the Student Government Association assigned each club on campus a specific item and goal quantity. According to Emily, members of the Student Government made weekly collections from each club and after a month of collecting, bagged the items for each of the 175 families. She says it was amazing to see how the entire school showed its support for this cause. “Altruism is an important skill to learn at an early age. Events like Harvest Drive teach the student body about giving back to the community and students will hopefully be givers when they become adults,” shared Emily. “Harvest Drive is extra special because we are helping

students and their families who live within our own neighborhoods and community.” In addition to Harvest Drive, the Student Government Association hosts Dance Marathon to raise money for the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. In its first two years, Cypress Bay has raised over $20,000.

Cypress Bay Club Celebrates Habitat for Humanity Day BY LAUREN PABIAN, STUDENT WRITER

he Cypress Bay High School Habitat for Humanity Club filled the school’s courtyard with games, decorations and music for its first annual Habitat for Humanity Day. Senior and Community Outreach Officer Mitchell Hunsucker was appointed to coordinate this event. He said junior and Habitat for Humanity President Matthew Liebman approached him with the idea to create a program to raise awareness for the club. It was Hunsucker’s idea to hold a Habitat for Humanity Day. “This event was so important to hold not only for our club, but for students at the Bay so they could learn how they can make a difference in the community,” Hunsucker said. “Joining Habitat gives students the opportunity to do great things and we intended on reaching out to students who were unaware of our club and what we do.” The courtyard was decorated with blue and green streamers, and featured a photo wall and games like Jenga and a bean bag toss. “I wanted to put out Jenga since the whole idea of the game is to successfully build which is what we do in Habitat,” Hunsucker said. “Even though there were

so many great things going on throughout the day, to me, the most successful part was the display that my dad and I built. We put up a bunch of pictures, so

students can see what we do at Habitat for Humanity and they were also able to decorate it with their handprints; everyone just had so much fun and the wall turned out looking so great.”

He mainly utilizes social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter to promote the club. “We try to promote ourselves as much as we can by thinking of the best ways we could reach students to show them what Habitat is about and all the amazing reasons they should join the club,” Liebman said. “Social media has been our best way of promoting so far, but I think holding Habitat Day was an amazing way of recruiting new members since we are able to speak with everyone face-to-face.” After weeks of hard work and preparation, Hunsucker said he was very happy with how everything turned out. Habitat ended up recruiting many members. “It was such a great experience to run and plan an amazing event like this,” Hunsucker said. “It showed students that they can make a huge difference in the community; I hope next year’s is even bigger and better so even more students can become involved.” Lauren Pabian is a junior at Cypress Bay High School. ust the other day I came home from work after spending long hours at the office and many more stuck in traffic. I walked in the house and as I looked intensely at my sofa I had an internal debate about whether I should lie on it and vegetate or start preparing dinner; the debate was brief, the sofa won! I laid there, on my phone of course, surfing through social media, reading through my emails and texting my co-worker about the day’s shenanigans; as if we didn’t do enough talking at the office. My son came out of his room where he had been doing homework, sat next to me and started talking about school and something else, I couldn’t tell you what that something else was about because although I asked him, “Sweetheart, how was your day?” I continued to surf through my phone and vegetate. My son continued to talk to me about his day, and suddenly raised his voice and said “Mom, are you listening?” I responded, “Yes, of course.” And he asked me to repeat what he said, I couldn’t. He then told me that I was hearing him but not actually listening. He was right! I had a sudden revelation, I was not being present! I was doing the exact thing I was complaining about other parents doing. Children desperately trying to get their attention, while parents walk aimlessly staring at their phone and unconsciously dismissing their children’s need for attention. It is important that we remember to be present for our children. To prioritize our time with them. There is nothing wrong with spending your “me time” on your phone or doing whatever it is that helps you relax after a long day at work. However, it is important to be present and fully engaged when our children are around since our time with them is short but of significant impact. Children will naturally model their parent’s behavior. Some experts in their respected field, suggest that the amount of quality time we spend with our children will greatly influence their future success in life. What example are we setting for our children? What kind of role models do we hope to be for them and what are we doing to achieve it? Be intentional in your time with your children. Listen to them, not just hear them. Sometimes our children’s honesty is our greatest lesson. Reduce Soda from Your Child’s Diet BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

educing this one item from your children’s diet can have the greatest single effect on their dental health! When the former mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, created policy to reduce the number of ounces in a large soda sold in his city’s restaurants, he was criticized by some for violating their human rights. The amount of press that this situation received not only illustrates the degree of political divide in this country, but also the love of Americans for their favorite bubbly beverage. It is estimated that between 50 and 80 percent of children in the United States consume at least one serving of soda per day. Some of these children are consuming multiple servings. Just as concerning as the high frequency of soda drinking are the large quantities. For example, the average serving size of soda in the 1950’s was 6.5 ounces. The average size currently is 20 ounces. As we will see, both the increased frequency and quantity of soda consumption have a negative effect on oral health. To understand why we have singled out soda, it is important to consider the factors contributing to the creation of dental caries (or cavities). In order to have a cavity, there needs to be certain cavity causing bacteria in the mouth and an acidic environment. This acidic environment allows for weakening of the surface of the teeth and the eventual colonization of the interior or the tooth by the bacteria. Sweetened soda contains “simple” sugars, which are easily broken down by oral bacteria. The byproducts are acidic and lead to the weakening of the surfaces of teeth. What about non-sugared or diet soda? As it turns out, carbonation itself is very acidic having a similar negative effect. Here are a number of strategies to reduce the effects of soda and acid causing foods in general. ▸▸ Limit or possibly eliminate soda from our diets. Get into the habit of drinking water. Juice and milk have sugar as well. So, try to limit their consumption to meal times. ▸▸ Rinse. If soda or any sugar foods are consumed, rinse with water afterwards. Water is very good at neutralizing the acidity levels in the mouth. ▸▸ Read the ingredients. Stay away from foods whose first one or two ingredients is sugar. ▸▸ Use topical fluoride regularly. Topical fluoride hardens the surface of the enamel and helps to reverse the effects of the acids. Fluoride can be gotten from toothpaste, rinses, and professional application. An alternative to fluoride is xylitol. Its mechanism of action is different than fluoride, but research of its frequent use is promising. ▸▸ Set a good example. Children are very impressionable and will model most behaviors observed by the adults in their lives. We try to be practical when making recommendations to our families. We do not stress the total removal of all sweet food/drink from the diet. However, following the advice above and common sense strategies can make a significant change in our oral health. omen considering taking birth control pills have to seriously study their options and evaluate the pros and cons. Knowing “why” you are taking “the pill” is also important. Although intended to prevent unwanted pregnancies, some women use birth control pills to regulate periods, stop periods and control PMS symptoms such as cramping, heavy bleeding and acne. However, it is important to note that just like any other drug, birth control pills used for this purpose are putting a patch on the symptoms, but do absolutely nothing to address the underlying causes. If you have ever filled a birth control prescription, you probably have noticed there is a very long disclaimer with the explanation of possible side effects and complications that may arise from taking these pills. Some of the possible side effects include depression, weight gain or weight loss, headache, potential increased risk of breast cancer, stroke and heart attack, among others. These pills are made with synthetic hormones that will change the way your body functions. Birth control pills are very effective in controlling pregnancy, because the synthetic hormones trick a woman’s body into thinking she is already pregnant and does not need to ovulate. The pill stops the ovaries from releasing eggs and thickens the cervical mucus, which keeps sperm from getting to the egg. Women take a cycle of pills loaded with hormones for about 21-24 days followed by a cycle of placebo pills or “off” days. Women are still able to experience menstruation monthly because of the “off” pills that create a sudden drop in estrogen levels. However, this is not a natural cycle—it must be noted that your body is being loaded with man-made hormones that mimic the behavior of estrogen and progestin. A natural cycle has high and lows when it comes to hormone levels. The pill keeps women at a high level of estrogen all month long. Another category of pills known as “progestin-only” will eliminate monthly periods so that women only have about four periods a year. Although it sounds convenient, it is important to consider the health implications. Some doctors have deemed these drugs “safe and effective,” while others recommend their patients avoid them. Gator Run Elementary Students Have the Giving Spirit BY STACEY BOMSER

ator Run Elementary students learned a valuable lesson this past holiday season – that it’s better to give than receive. For the past eight years, Gator Run students have generously donated toys for students at Walker Elementary in Fort Lauderdale. The relationship between the two schools started after a former Gator Run assistant principal moved to Walker Elementary and recognized the need at her new school. Gator Run School Counselors Lindsay Weinstock and Jackie Grasinger coordinate the toy drive. Ms. Weinstock says it’s important to engage young children in the act of charity. “It helps students recognize how lucky they are and teaches the importance of helping others who are not as fortunate.” The toy drive is a schoolwide event, with each grade level collecting toys appropriate for their age level. “This allows students at Gator Run to not only help other children in need but allows the students to feel that they made a positive difference in a child just like them to have a wonderful holiday,” explains Ms. Weinstock.

Manatee Bay Elementary Students Honor Veterans BY STACEY BOMSER

or the past five years, students in Annejeanette Washington’s fifth grade class at Manatee Bay Elementary have recognized Veterans Day by writing letters and making cards for local veterans, as well as family members who have served or are actively serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. This year Mr. Allison’s fifth grade class and Mrs. Megee’s fourth grade class joined the endeavor. “It is important for students to understand the sacrifices made by the men and women who served in our military and those who currently serve,” explains Ms. Washington. She notes that this project is personal for her and the Manatee Bay community. “I am the product of five United States veterans. At Manatee Bay, we have many students whose parents or loved ones are veterans. And finally, our Latinas in Action coordinator, Sgt. Major Jorge Cruz, is a veteran and does a lot of activities within the Weston schools.” To prepare for this project, Ms. Washington taught students the history of Veterans Day. Students used History Channel resources to research facts about the holiday and explore what they could do in their com-

munity to thank local veterans. Their efforts were part of History Channel’s #ThankaVet program. Students also read a Scholastic News article about how military families are affected when their loved ones are called to serve their country. The article included letter stems so that students could draft their own letters to either local veterans at the VA hospital or to family members. Ms. Washington says one student wrote to his mother, an Air Force veteran, “Mom, I will never thank you enough for what you went through and gave up for our freedom.” Another student wrote to a family member how much she loves and misses him and thanked him for his service to our country. That relative wrote a touching letter back. “When I gave her the letter, she read it and squeezed it tight

and cried,” shared Ms. Washington. “All who were standing there could not help but cry as her love for her relative was evident.” Ms. Washington says all who received the letters and cards were filled with emotion and gratitude. “The veterans at the VA Clinic and VA Hospital were in tears, smiling, and felt greatly appreciated, including a 95-year-old World War II Veteran who greeted us at the Sunrise VA Clinic with a warm hug.” She noted that her fiancé and his colleagues at the Social Security Administration look forward to receiving the students’ letters each year. “They proudly display their letters and cards at their office.” In addition to writing letters, Ms. Washington’s students also recorded messages for veterans using FlipGrid, a video discussion platform for educators.

Gator Run Book Lover Becomes Local YouTube Sensation BY STACEY BOMSER

ver the years, Weston has been home to many celebrities, from athletes to actors. It’s newest and youngest star is YouTube sensation Arthur DeMichelli Gomes. While his name may not be familiar to everyone, the fifth grader has developed quite a following from his fellow Gator Run Elementary School students. Arthur created Book Tips to promote reading at his school. “I started the show because there was no more Accelerated Reader. I had the idea for the YouTube program and talked to Principal Peters and he liked it.” In each episode Arthur interviews a special guest, typically a teacher or faculty member, about one of their favorite books. Media Specialist Elayne Hollander was his first guest. She shared two special books with viewers: Maxi’s Secrets, which was targeted to third through fifth graders, and We Forgot Brock!, for kindergarten through second graders. In addition to talking about the two stories, Ms. Hollander encouraged students “to read, have great adventures and let books take you places.” Tara Slosson also spoke about the benefits of reading during her segment. The fourth-grade teacher shared that reading “opens your imagination, helps to be creative, and helps with your writing.” In addition to interviewing each special guest about their chosen book, Arthur also uses Book Tips as a forum to encourage students to read more. During one

episode he promoted the school’s book fair. He’s also quick to point out to viewers that many of the featured books are available in the school’s media center. Book Tips has garnered a huge following. Not only are teachers showing each new episode in their classrooms to their students, but people are watching at home. Arthur admits he never thought the show would be as popular as it is. “Not even close,” he jokes. “I made a challenge that when we got to 1,000 views I would cut my hair.” Arthur is now sporting a mohawk and viewership continues to increase. One of the reasons Book Tips is so popular is its entertainment value. Not only is Arthur a charming host, his production element is quite impressive. He does all the filming using two small cameras. His father helps with the editing, interspersing clips from popular movies and TV shows throughout the interview. Although appreciative of Book Tips’ popularity, Arthur says just watching the video about the book does not count – you really need to read each book. He will be entering middle school next year, but hopes Book Tips will continue. “I might hand the mic to my little sister in first grade. Her name is Cora. HELP! My Child Is Falling Behind! BY CELINA CHOCRON

s your child having trouble finishing his/her homework? Is he/she falling behind due to not turning assignments in on time? Do you think your child is lazy or might something be getting in his/her way? As a parent we think that our children are very capable, and they are perfect human beings. If we see our children falling behind in school, our first reaction is to put more pressure on them. We believe that by giving consequences they will change. What should we do when the consequences are not working? Here are three effective steps to follow: Avoid misconceptions: There are several misconceptions in the relationship of being smart, being capable, being socially successful and success at school. During my 25 years of experience in the educational field, I have found that parents and teachers have the misconception that children don’t care about school and they are just lazy. The reality is that all students care; everyone likes to be praised. Students can be smart, have excellent adaptive skills, but not being successful at school due to specific reasons.

Discover the problem: Your child’s behavior and attitude can have different reasons. Once we discover the reason of that behavior, we can help him/ her. We can design a positive intervention plan to overcome the barriers that are impacting his/her academics. Some of the functions of the behavior are: avoidance, attention, or sensory-stimulation. Your child might have trouble completing homework due to some type of learning challenges; therefore, he/she avoids it and does other things; or he/she might want your attention because he/she has learned that you pay attention when he/she does challenging behavior; or he/she might have sensory-stimulation needs and need breaks and movement between tasks. Finding the solution: It is imperative to meet with teachers and administrators to create a plan in school and at home to fulfill your child’s need. In December 2015, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) was replaced by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The purpose of the ESSA is to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps. Therefore, it is the school’s responsibility to create a plan to help your child. You might need help from an outside professional to analyze the situation from an objective perspective and put together both plans. Some of the tips to follow at home are: create structure and scheduling at home, and focus on the process and not on the short-term results (grades). In the end, our long-term goal as parents is to train our children to be successful in life and teach them strategies that they can apply to meet their needs. Pediatric Foot and Ankle Sprains Can Be a More Complex Growth Plate Injury BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

njuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present. Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone. Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating. X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary. Treatment options (early diagnosis is crucial): ▸▸ Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster it heals. ▸▸ If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Nonweightbearing would be mandatory. ▸▸ If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked. ost golfers I play with – and thinking about it, most of the golfers that I have given putting lessons to – struggle with 3 putting on one or more greens during a round. Below are two great putting tips that I most often use… It’s so simple, easy to do and effective that it staggers me that golfers don’t all do it, but I know for a fact that most golfers have no idea about it. First though, let’s understand why most golfers have 3 or more putts on a green. 95% of the time, it’s because they don’t get the distance/strength/speed – whatever you want to call it – of their first putt right. Which ends up leaving Dean Sklar, PGA them with a putt of a few feet to go or coming back. “So what?” you might say. It’s only a few feet. True. But for most golfers, it’s a couple of feet, quite a few times a round and over time the pressure and stress can build. Can’t it? A quick look at some of the putting statistics on the PGA Tour will show you that the best (not the worst) putters on tour are making an average of just over 50% of their putts under five feet in length. Just think about that statistic for a minute – just over half – are you surprised at that? These are the best putters out there. But when it comes to the green, for some reason golfers who rely on measurements and devices to provide valuable data as to how hard to hit their shots down the fairway and to the green, suddenly expect for some unknown reason that their brain will know how hard to hit their putt. But what has it got to go on? For most of you nothing. For me, I know the length of every putt before I hit it – gained from pacing the length of the putt as I wander around the green looking at the slopes and borrows. This is a standard practice you should do before addressing the ball to putt. I generally go around behind the hole for every putt I hit and it’s walking back from there to the ball when I take the distance. Other times, I make sure I take my clubs around past the hole so that as I walk back to my ball to putt I count the paces. You’ll figure out what works best for you. Over a few months it will become second nature and you will build a library of distances and the associated strength to hit them so well, that you will seldom – if ever – 3 putt again. oday, new dietary trends, such as “paleo” or “gluten-free” can be confusing to people simply looking for the healthiest diet. By understanding the nutritional makeup of food and its impact on systemic and ocular health, you can better protect your ocular health. Here is a look at what the body needs nutritionally, and what many of today’s common diets do to the eye.

Dietary Basics Most diets can be healthy, as long as they are done properly by ensuring sufficient intake of necessary vitamins and nutrients. The three main components of a proper diet are: protein, carbohydrates and good fats. Proteins help the body maintain muscle mass, speed up metabolism and feel full longer. Carbs provide quick energy when the body breaks them down into single glucose molecules, which are then stored for later use. Lastly, fats keep you warm and provide you with essential fatty acids, which help to control inflammation and aid in blood clotting and brain development.

Paleo Diet This diet’s rather simplistic mantra is, “if a caveman couldn’t eat it, neither can you.” Thus, all processed foods are avoided. The mainstays of the diet include fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood and nuts. Ocular involvement: Research shows a high amount of meat protein, a common concern with paleo, is linked to a higher risk of early cataract development. Vitamin D deficiencies associated with this diet may also lead to an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These then contribute to early retinal vascular damage. One study also suggests the impaired immunity caused by vitamin D deficiency increases risks for corneal diseases, such as ocular herpes.

Such shortages may contribute to ocular issues; night blindness or corneal ulcerations arise from vitamin A deficiency, low EFA intake worsens dry eye disease (DED), and optic neuropathy can arise with vitamin B12 deficiencies.

Gluten-Free While some patients eliminate gluten from their diet due to rumors that it’s the root of all modern maladies, in several cases, valid medical reasons exist for avoiding gluten, including wheat allergy. Ocular involvement: Wheat is sometimes found in cosmetics and lotions, causing a wheat allergy to manifest as allergic conjunctivitis, eye irritation and eczema on the lids and the periorbital skin. Most commonly, vitamin A, vitamin D, and calcium malabsorption associated with wheat allergy can lead to retinopathy, night blindness, an increase in cataracts, dry eye disease and, occasionally, idiopathic intracranial hypertension. T IS THE POLICY OF THIS STATE TO ENCOURAGE THE PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF DISPUTES AND THE EARLY RESOLUTION OF PENDING LITIGATION THROUGH A VOLUNTARY SETTLEMENT PROCESS” The above quote is from the Florida Collaborative Law Process Act. It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique non-adversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation.” There are some definite rules that must be followed and not every case is suited for the collaborative process. “As part of this nonadversarial and voluntary resolution of disputes, lawyers who engage in the collaborative law process in a family law matter, and any other lawyers in that lawyer’s firm, may not afterwards represent any party in any related proceeding except to request that a court approve the settlement reached during the collaborative law process or in specified emergency situations in accordance with family law court rules.” As stated above, if for some reason the collaborative process “breaks down” and litigation becomes the only alternative, the collaborative attorney must withdraw from representing his/her client. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. The goal of the collaborative process is for both parties and their respective attorneys to act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances there are other “team members,” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and, therefore, the parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” on more than one occasion. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process; each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery; and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney,” there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. he average age of an American child at the time she receives her first smartphone is 10 years old. More than half of children between the ages of 8 and 12 have a smartphone they use every day. Teens watch more than twice as much YouTube video as television. Three out of four American teenagers subscribe to SnapChat and Instagram. These facts, from a pair of studies published by Trendera and Influence Central, are not surprises to anyone with children. Today’s young people are the first generation of humans to grow up since the advent of the iPhone. Kids are typically more technologically savvy and more comfortable integrating technology into every aspect of their lives than older generations. Parents, however, are nervous. How can they control, or even be aware of who their children are communicating with? What types of content are kids sending each other? How does someone protect a curious teen from sending an image to someone that could have a lasting effect on his life? The answers to these questions and others like them are all too often uncomfortably nebulous. Fortunately, there are some tools available to all of us that can make life easier. There are a number of new apps specifically targeted at families with young children.

Facebook recently launched a new product called Messenger Kids. This app, which is controlled from a parent’s facebook account, gives kids the ability to text and video chat with friends and family while allowing parents to monitor everything the child is doing. It also, of course, introduces kids at a young age to the Facebook ecosystem.

Parental Controls

A first line of defense for some parents is setting up parental controls on a child’s phone. iPhone users can use the phone’s Restrictions settings to limit a child’s phone use. Parents can limit a child’s ability to use certain apps, block particular types of content or restrict the time of day the phone can be used. Similar parent controls are available on Android phones.

Inspect don’t Expect

Many parents take a different approach. Realizing their children are more sophisticated tech users than they are, these parents simply insist on reviewing their children’s texts, youtube history, browser history and the like on a regular basis. This technique can be very helpful but it is not foolproof. Apps like SnapChat do not preserve chat histories.

Parental Control Apps

There are many commercial parental control apps on the marketplace that allow parents to set

times of day for phone use, monitor child usage, block content types and enable/disable games or apps. These products have a range of prices from free up to $60 a year for a family plan. Examples of these include NetNanny, KidLogger, Pumpic and PhoneSheriff. Each has its own uniquie set of features, but the functionality of all of them is similar.

Child Engagement It will come as little surprise to anyone that there are a number of thriving chat rooms and forums

filled with teens detailing ways to get around parental control platforms. Motivated teenagers can be quite clever. An interesting example of this is my own experience with a great app called Life360. Life360 allows parents to get real-time information about their kids’ location, cell phone use and travel habits (e.g. were they speeding). My kids don’t like this app because it drains battery life. One afternoon, I was wondering where my teen son Justin was. I clicked on the Life360 app, pulled up the map, and there he was, in Pyongyang, North Korea! In reality, Justin was two blocks from home playing basketball, but he had very quickly figured out how to “spoof” his phone’s GPS; something I am quite sure I will never know how to do. Whether parents like it or not, our society is never going back to a time where young people use personal electronic devices less. The entire global culture has quickly evolved with the mobile phone at its center. Experts agree that the best way to keep kids safe online is the combination of parental controls, mindful oversight and, most importantly, engagement with children. No one knows what teens will be doing ten years from now, but we can be sure it will include even greater use of technology than today.

he Nursing Consortium of South Florida, a non-profit coalition of hospitals, nursing schools, and health care staffing organizations, once again organized the Day in the Life of a Nurse™ program in partnership with South Florida public school districts and many private high schools. Students from Boyd H. Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes had the opportunity to experience what a typical day is like working as a nurse at Broward Health Medical Center (BHMC). “Broward Health Medical Center is dedicated to supporting the next generation of nurses and we recently were given the exciting opportunity to showcase our world-class medical facility to South Florida students,” said Chief Nursing Officer Robyn Farrington, BSN, RN, MBA/HCM. “Nursing continues to be one of the fastest growing and in-demand healthcare careers and we want to encourage students to consider the nursing profession as they plan their futures.” This year, 53 South Florida facilities and 61 schools participated in the program. At BHMC, students participating in the one-day program experienced various activities, including nurse-led tours of hospital departments. The experience allowed students to spend quality time with a nurse and ask them individual questions about their profession and the challenges they face while hearing stories about their career. Students met and heard from nurse educators, information systems nurses, nurse researchers and nurse administrators. In addition to shadowing staff nurses and listening to various presentations, students learned how to take a person’s blood pressure and pulse, how to listen to a heartbeat through a stethoscope and how to scrub in and dress in surgical attire while touring surgical suites. Tips for a Pain Free Neck BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER

eck pain is a common reason people seek chiropractic care. Whether it is a stiffness, ache or sharp, debilitating pain, problems associated with the neck – which can include headache, arm/hand/ shoulder symptoms and upper back disorders – present a significant burden to our health care system, to our productivity and to our lives. The causes of neck pain are numerous. Two factors, however, are by far the most prevalent: posture and spinal alignment. Fortunately, both of these factors can be improved with knowledge, commitment and chiropractic treatment. The following points may be useful in ensuring your neck remains pain-free: POSTURE: Optimum posture is where, when viewed from the side, the center of the ear lies directly over the midpoint of the shoulder. Viewed from the front, the head should not be tilted, shifted or rotated in relation to the rib cage. Optimum posture also involves having normal cervical, thoracic and lumbar curves. Your chiropractor can help to accurately assess your posture, and can give you specific exercises and suggestions to improve postural faults. ERGONOMICS: Ergonomics involves such things as how one sits or stands at work, at a desk, computer or while watching TV or reading. It can also include driving or sleeping positions. To minimize neck, shoulder and upper back fatigue, avoid prolonged positions where the head is tilted or pushed forward. Change positions and tasks regularly and often, choosing a new task or position that works the body the opposite way. Strive for correct, balanced posture while working, traveling, playing and sleeping. This means do not prop your head up with pillows when sleeping on your back. INJURY: Trauma to the neck must be treated appropriately, beginning with an accurate diagnosis. Accurate diagnosis of neck trauma, whether it was the result of a car accident, fall, sports or some other injury, should always include x-ray. X-ray is used to assess the structural condition of the spine, including the cervical curve. Abnormal curves in the cervical spine are major contributors to chronic neck pain, headache and other neck related problems. Chiropractic treatment has been shown to correct or improve abnormal spinal curves. STRESS: We all must deal with stress in our lives. How we deal with it determines the level of tension we feel, and this can play a significant role in whether or not we experience neck related symptoms. To help us cope with stress more effectively, several behavior or attitude adjustments may be beneficial. Exercise moderately for about 45 minutes every day. Make adequate sleep and a healthy diet priorities. Maintain balance in your life between work and play, and in your relationships. Keep life in perspective. See the lighter side of situations. he term comes from the Greek words “gyne” (meaning “woman”) and “mastos” (meaning “breast”). In practical terms, this means abnormally large breasts on men. The condition is relatively common in adolescent boys, and 90% of the time symptoms disappear in a matter of months, or as adolescence wanes a few years later. But the remaining 10% are burdened with a social handicap that can cause shame, lowered self-esteem and confidence. There are many potential causes, including puberty, steroid abuse, obesity, marijuana use, side effects of medicine, and certain genetic diseases. Gynecomastia can be emotionally devastating. A man or boy with gynecomastia struggles with anxiety over such simple acts as taking off his shirt at the beach. In cases of obesity, weight loss can alter the gynecomastic condition, but for many it may not totally eliminate it. For all other causes, surgery is the only known physical remedy, and often the best solution. Once the contour of the chest is restored to normal, the patient can begin to feel more confident and selfassured with his physical body image. Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty and reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced. In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used. There are various liposuction techniques that may be used; the technique most appropriate in your case will be defined prior to your procedure. Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced, or the nipple repositioned to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference. Sometimes gynecomastia is treated with both liposuction and excision. Any surgical treatment to correct gynecomastia will require incisions. While most incision lines are concealed within natural contours, some may be visible and are a necessary result of breast reduction surgery. After surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions and an elastic bandage or support garment may be used to minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as it heals. The procedure duration is typically one to two hours and most men are able to return to work within 4 to 5 days depending on how much lifting is required.
