he Mayors’ Chess Challenge returns to Weston on Saturday, January 12th. Players of all ages and skill levels, from throughout Broward County, are expected to gather to enjoy a friendly game of chess. Mayor Daniel Stermer will be playing in this free and open competition which is a celebration of scholastic chess. He encourages fellow chess players to come out and join the fun. “This day provides for great interaction and an exchange of experience and passion for a game that provides life-long focus and critical thinking skills,” states Mayor Stermer. “One of the great achievements of the Mayors’ Chess Challenge is there are no bar-

riers due to age, physical ability, or economic status. Chess breaks down barriers.” The Mayor is busy brushing up on his chess moves, acknowledging that while always a joy, playing against children can be a true challenge. He will be joined by members of the Weston City Commission, BSO officers, and community leaders. This is the fifth year of the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. It was started by Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan to promote scholastic chess and its academic benefits. The program has grown over the years and now 19 municipalities take part in the county-wide program, with multiple cities hosting each month from September through May. The event in Weston takes place from 10am to noon on Saturday, January 12th at the Weston Community Center. The City will supply chess boards, but players are welcome to bring their own. Free instruction will be provided by the Sunrise Center for Excellence in Chess. There will be chess board cookies for all players to enjoy. Two other Mayors’ Chess Challenges are scheduled for this month: City of North Lauderdale on January 19th and City of Coral Springs on January 26th. There are nine additional Mayors’ Chess Challenges scheduled this season. The closest ones to Weston are February 9th in Cooper City, February

16th in Miramar, and May 18th in Pembroke Pines. Players will receive a Mayors’ Chess Challenge Passport to log their participation. Those with perfect attendance will receive a prize at the end of the season.

Weston Named 10th Best City in Florida for Families BY STACEY BOMSER

L

ately, it seems like every month Weston is topping the ranks on some organization’s or publication’s “Best” list. The latest recognition comes from WalletHub.com, a personal finance outlet, which ranked the City of Weston as the 10th Best City for Florida Families.

Although many people consider Florida to be the land of retirees, according to the U.S. Census Bureau over 20% of the population is under the age of 18. That number is even higher here in Weston, where roughly 30% of the population is under the age of 18. It’s not surprising so many families choose to call Weston home, when you consider all that it has to offer. To compile its list of the best cities for families in Florida, WalletHub compared 183 cities across 21 key metrics falling into four categories: family life and fun; education, health and safety; affordability;

and socio-economics. Weston Recognized as One of the Nation’s Top Digital Cities BY STACEY BOMSER

W

e live in a digital age and the City of Weston is doing all that it can to take advantage of the available technology to keep residents informed. Just a few months ago, the City launched a redesigned website which makes services and information more accessible and service-centric. The goal was to put vital information no more than three clicks away. That is just one of many factors that led to Weston being named a winner in the Center of Digital Government’s 2018 Digital Cities Survey. Weston was #9 in the Up to 75,000 Population category. Now in its 18th year, the survey, which is open to all U.S. municipalities, recognizes cities using technology to improve transparency, enhance cybersecurity and much more. Teri Takai, Executive Director for the Center for Digital Government, congratulated Weston and the other winning cities. “This year’s Digital Cities Survey winners are leading the nation by leveraging data to improve a wide range of city services and initiatives.”

The judges recognized Weston for publishing its first Technology Strategic Plan last year, which plays a big part in the City’s core goals and its 2028 Strategic Value and Business Plan. “These objectives, via the Technology Strategic Plan, aim to offer a positive return on investment by improving efficiency and therefore reducing expenditures; improving accessibility and decreasing complexity of services and resources; increasing transparency; and mitigating risk by improving cybersecurity and privacy measures.” In recognizing Weston for its accomplishments, the judges highlighted how residents and visitors can take advantage of the Maps & Apps section on the City’s new website. It offers a variety of interactive map features and easily printable maps indicating school districts and flood zones, as well as garbage and recycling collection schedules. City Manager John Flint says the City is proud to have been recog-

nized by the Digital Cities Survey for the development of its Technology Strategic Plan. “The Plan will guide us in meeting the current and future needs of our residents and businesses to provide them with ease of service, transparency, and accessibility. The

City has made a robust commitment to keeping current with advances in local government technology with the acquisition of several major operating platforms and the recently launched new website. The City’s residents and businesses should take comfort in knowing that the City Commission and the City staff have the vision to treat technology as a part of the City’s physical infrastructure, and to maintain and enhance that infrastructure for their benefit.” Mr. Flint expressed congratulations, on behalf of the City of Weston, to Technology Director Ryan Fernandes, Assistant Director Steven Murray, and their talented team for all of their hard work. Weston was one of five cities from Florida to rank in the Digital Cities Survey top ten in the under 75,000 population category. Coral Gables ranked #1. n To read more about the Center of Digital Government’s Digital Cities Survey go to www.govtech.com/dc/articles/DigitalCities-2018.html.

Believe it or not, there is a better time to list your home to get your house sold faster and at a higher asking price. If you’re looking for a quicker sale, historically, the end of spring through the beginning of summer is the best time to list. According to a study by Zillow, homes listed between mid-March through May traditionally sold the fastest (18.5 days on average) and often for a marginally higher asking price. Families with children want to finish out the school year in their current district before starting anew. More daylight doesn’t hurt allowing more opportunities to get people in the door. The good news is, being that Florida is known for year-round great weather, houses tend to sell throughout the year. If it turns out your job relocation has you listing early in the year, don’t fret. Although, the statistics prove that homes historically sell faster and higher during the late spring, Weston has a stable influx of buyers year-round due to our A rated public schools and highly ranked Safe City awards. With experienced handling of the transaction, proper price placement and strategic marketing, your home can sell at any time. If later in the year is the time to make the move, keep in mind that the buyers who are looking to buy around the holidays are usually very serious. Many buyers must buy, and many sellers prefer to sell before the end of the year because of tax purposes. When you close on a mortgage and/or buy a house before the end of the year, you get to take the deductible taxes and fees off your gross income in that calendar year. You also get to deduct any mortgage interest you incur; certain real estate taxes and points are also deductible. Another perk of closing before year end is that you get to apply for Homestead property tax exemption for the following year. There may be less showings later in the year, but generally the buyers who shop at the end of the year for a home are highly motivated and qualified. Regardless of what time of year you choose to list your home, the best overall strategy to get your home sold is to prepare the home inside and out, make necessary repairs and improvements, make sure the house is up to code with permits and price it strategically. While there is no “magic day” to sell your home, putting your home on the market in late spring or early summer increases your chances of a quicker sale and a higher profit margin.

or parents looking to provide their children with added exposure to the STEAM subjects – science, technology, engineering, art and math – the Weston Community Center has a whole menu of options, with everything from computer programming to cartooning. Cartoon Club is a brand-new program that teaches children, ages five to 18, how to create their own cartoon character and comic book. Students will be separated by skill level as they learn techniques and the art of storytelling. Hobby Quest provides another opportunity for creative exploration. Airplane Builders is a STEM-focused program that

teaches children how planes lift off and fly as they build various model airplanes. The eight-week session is for ages five through 14. Fashion Trends teaches children how to sketch, design and sew their own clothes. The eight-week session, which is for ages six to eleven, culminates with a runway fashion show, where students model their own chic creations. Code Explorers offers a variety of computer programming courses for children from pre-school through middle school; the PK class is for ages four and five, the NEO class is for ages six through nine, and the Junior class is for ages ten to 13. During the winter session, PK Architecture will teach little ones about geometry, shapes, colors and forms as they study architectural styles and build their own projects. The NEO and JR classes will learn 3D Programming and Design as they think, learn and program in three dimensions while enhancing spatial reasoning and thinking skills. Some projects will be manufactured using different engineering techniques. The spring session focuses on robotic engineering. In Sensor and Robotic Programming, the PK

class will experiment with robotic devices that can be programmed using different parameters such as sound, color and movement. They will also learn how sensors mimic human senses. In Intro to Biomimicry, the NEO and JR classes will learn the engineering behind many animals in nature and build remote control machines that mimic their movements, such as how a crab moves sideways or a monkey climbs a tree. In addition to the STEM subjects, children can learn to play chess, speak Spanish, perform a Broadway musical, and prepare for the SAT at the Community Center. There are also plenty of programs for children looking to exercise their bodies, not just their minds, with Kidokinetics, Jr. and Kidokinetics, Nike Marathon Kids, Superstars Dance and Baton, and Youth Karate. Weston University Students Get First-Hand Fire and EMS Services Experience BY STACEY BOMSER

Photos courtesy City of Weston

W

eston University is a one-of-a-kind program providing select high school students with a unique civic education. Each month, students interact with city leaders and staff, participating in hands-on activities while exploring the various departments and agencies that make up our local government. Fire Rescue and Emergency Services Day is always one of the most popular with students because they get to experience a day in the life of a firefighter or paramedic. The day began with presentations by Weston District Fire Chief Todd Draizin and staff members from the Fire Marshall’s office. Students learned the history of fire services, an overview of the Fire Marshall’s job responsibilities and those of the fire chief, which include

budgeting, staffing considerations and equipment costs. Fire Safety Educators also spoke to the students. After the morning lesson, the group visited Fire Station 81, where they got a taste of how demanding, physically taxing and complex fire services are. The students were surprised to discover that the complete fire gear weighs 80 pounds and that firefighters must utilize complex strategies during the course of their job. The firefighters and paramedics staged four hands-on activities so the students could experience the various aspects of their jobs. In Fire Extinguisher Training, students put out a fire using a water fire extinguisher. During the Engine Company Orientation and Demonstration, the students were given a tour of the fire engine and then were allowed to try to knock down three cones using a fire hose. The Search and Rescue exercise tasked students to gear up and then, wearing a blacked-out mask, follow a hose line to simulate looking for a downed fire-

fighter with zero visibility. The final activity focused on EMS services. The Intubation and I/O Access station allowed students to experience first-hand the tools paramedics use to save lives, such as opening an obstructed airway. After lunch, provided by Mission BBQ, the students got a bird’s eye view of Weston from atop the ladder truck. The day concluded with a chance to utilize the jaws-of-life and other tools firefighters use when trying to rescue and extricate people from a vehicle.

New Year’s Resolutions BY DISTRICT CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN ow that the holiday season is over, and we restore our home to its pre-holiday condition, we can focus on setting New Year’s resolutions that will protect our families from hidden hazards. Here are some tips that will help you keep your safety resolutions: Home Safety The fresh pine smell of a real Christmas tree may help keep the holiday spirit a few extra days, but it places you and your family at an increased risk of fire. Dispose of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire hazard and should not be left in the home, garage, or placed outside against the house. Hidden fires that start small go undetected in cluttered spaces. Now that the holiday decorations are ready to be put away, don’t miss an opportunity to clean your storage areas. Kitchen Safety Kitchen fires are the leading cause of residential fires. Now that all the holiday cooking is done, it is a great time to clean the grease and excess food build-up from the inside of the oven. Keep in mind ovens are made for cooking and not storage, and always check inside your oven before you turn it on. Remember, when cooking on the stove top, never leave it unattended, remain in the kitchen and stay alert. When using the oven never leave the house, stay awake and keep aware. Dryer Safety Dryer fires are the second leading cause of home fires. Most homeowners only clean the lint build up on the removable screen at the front of the dryer. The hidden hazard most commonly overlooked is in the lint build up in the back of the dryer and throughout the tubing within the walls all the way through the dryer exhaust vent of the house. Here are some additional safety tips to reduce the risk of fire while improving the efficiency of your dryer, saving you time and money; ▸▸ At least once a year have a dryer lint removal service clean the lint out of the entire vent pipe and have the outdoor vent flap checked to ensure it will open when the dryer is operating. ▸▸ Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used from the back of the dryer to the wall connection. ▸▸ Do not use a dryer without a lint filter and clean it before and after each load of laundry. ▸▸ Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks. ▸▸ Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer. ▸▸ Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed. Health Safety Accidental falls in the home often occur from using an unstable ladder, navigating through clutter or unseen trip hazards. Wearing proper footwear, keeping areas free of clutter and making sure areas are well lit will help reduce your risk of an unwanted injury. Check all medications in your home. If they have expired or if you are no longer taking them, contact the Broward Sheriff’s office at (954) 765-4321 to learn about Operation Medicine Cabinet. Do not flush them down the toilet or throw them away in the regular garbage. When storing medication please keep them out of reach from children. The Men and Women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office of Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year!!!

Upon completion of the Basic Training program, volunteers will be educated and prepared to assist BSO during an emergency situation or should a natural disaster affect our community. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s 30th Anniversary is Cause to Celebrate! BY STACEY BOMSER

C

leveland Clinic Florida celebrated its 30th anniversary with a festive gala, appropriately titled Celebrate! The event recognized 30 years of service to the South Florida community and the hospital’s accomplishments and growth. This past year, Cleveland Clinic Florida was ranked the #1 hospital in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market by U.S. News & World Report. It also opened an expanded Emergency Services Department as part of the newly constructed hospital tower on the Weston campus, as well as welcomed the Coral Springs Family Health Center. The massive expansion efforts continue with next year’s opening of the Lozick Women’s Center in Weston.

Master clinician Preetesh Patel, MD, is congratulated for his achievement by Carlos Higuera Rueda, MD, Director of the Orthopaedic & Rheumatologic Center at Cleveland Clinic Florida.

“Cleveland Clinic Florida’s growth over these past three decades is a result of the high-quality, collaborative and compassionate care our caregivers provide patients and the communities we are proud to serve,” said Wael Barsoum, MD, CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic Florida. Proceeds from the Celebrate! event will support the creation of the Lozick Women’s Center, which is dedicated to the screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Entirely funded through philanthropy, it will provide a seamless, holistic experience for patients in a newly constructed 6,800-square-foot space designed to foster care team collaboration and provide patients access to the most advanced technology in a relaxed and supportive environment. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 1/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Weston Friends Club Adds Men’s Group BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Weston Friends Club is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. What started as a “Newcomers Club” for new residents moving to the city, over the years has morphed into a social club for both newcomers and long-time Weston residents. The Weston Friends Club hosts everything from book clubs and card game groups to potluck meals and fashion shows, but its newest group caters specifically to a unique audience – men. “Weston Guys Meet & Eat” is a chance for men to forge friendships while enjoying a leisurely breakfast at a local restaurant. It was started by Mike Callahan, who modeled it after a men’s breakfast club he belonged to in suburban Boston years ago. “My primary objective has always been to have a casual monthly gettogether with a bunch of ‘old dudes’ looking for some R&R, camaraderie, and maybe a laugh or two to help brighten their day,” shares Callahan. During the breakfast gatherings, Callahan says the men discuss current events, local news, travel,

books, sports, and “the senior thought of the day.” Last month, the group was treated to a workshop with author D.D. Simpson, whose memoir, The Blue

Pawn, was recently chosen as one of The New York Post’s must-read books. It is a moving and thoughtful look at this second-generation New York City police officer’s years on the force gathered from journals he kept during his career. The book includes reflections on his experience as part of the rescue and recovery

effort at Ground Zero following the 9-11 attack. Callahan says the Weston Guys Meet & Eat group is considering expanding its offerings beyond meals to include more programs such as the author talk, and perhaps going on field trips to area attractions, attending sports events, and viewing select movies. Weston Friends Club President Kelli Rodriguez says the men’s club is a nice complement to the club’s offerings. “Weston Friends Club is where friendships and fun are the mission. We were excited to hear that one of the men in our group, Mike Callahan, was interested in starting his own activity. Weston Guys Meet & Eat has been very successful.” Like most Weston Friends Club activities, Weston Guys Meet & Eat is free to attend. Members pay for their own breakfast. The group meets the second Monday of each month at a local restaurant. This month’s meeting will be held on January 14th from 9-11am at First Watch in Sunrise. For more information on Weston Guys Meet & Eat, contact Mike Callahan at 954-298-8724.

Weston Students Remain the Driving Force Behind the Harvest Drive BY STACEY BOMSER

Harvest-mobile. Gator Run “rocked the house” with its canned food collection. Tequesta Trace Middle School came through once again. And the National Junior Honor Society at Imagine Charter School took a field trip to Western High to see Harvest Drive in action. She gives the biggest shout-out to the Student Government Association at Cypress Bay High School, which leads the donation drive for the Weston schools. Herman says the students volunteered their time holding Harvest Drive Days at local Publix stores collecting donations. “They were incredible! Not only did they collect enough donations to help 100 families here in

Weston, they also supported Fort Lauderdale High,” shares Herman, noting that the donation from Cypress Bay was so large that its benefactor school was able to pay it forward, sending excess donations to Stranahan High School. Herman extends a special thank-you to the Rotary Club of Weston and Carolina Ale House for their support of Harvest Drive, as well as a few special individuals including Mayor Daniel Stermer, Michael Freedland and Keith Petron. Although the holidays may be over, the need never stops. Herman say “hunger is a year-round issue” which is why Harvest Drive continually provides food to families in need. She invites the Weston community to show its continued support by attending the Harvest Drive Poker Night on January 31st. Details are available on the website. n To learn more about Harvest Drive and how you can help, visit www.HarvestDriveFlorida.com. View more pictures from Harvest Drive on the Seen on Scene page.

Community’s Generosity Makes Holidays Special for Families in Need BY STACEY BOMSER

A

pproximately 500 families had an extra special holiday, thanks in part to the generosity of the Weston community. Literally thousands of toys were donated to the Harvest Drive Boutique. Every November, the Harvest Drive provides Thanksgiving meals and a week’s worth of groceries to more than 2,400 families in need throughout Broward County. But these families need more than just food, they often need items many of us take for granted such as clothing, shoes and

household items such as linens. That’s why the Harvest Drive started the Harvest Boutique over 20 years ago. Throughout the year, Harvest Drive collects gently used clothing for children and adults, as well as toys and children’s books, which it distributes at the holiday time to recipient families who have been carefully selected by Broward County Schools social workers. The day before the Harvest Drive food distribution, recipient families are invited to come ‘shop’ the Harvest Drive Boutique.

Each family is assigned a volunteer who serves as a personal shopper, helping them find sizes and pick out special items for their children. For most of these families, the toys and games they select are the only holiday gifts for their children. The Weston community is a huge supporter of the Harvest Drive Boutique. This past holiday season, residents generously donated bags and boxes full of new and gently used toys and games. The City gave a special thanks to the Weston Explosion Softball community who really “pitched” in and delivered by collecting hundreds of items. The donations by Weston residents were enough to fill two huge trucks. Staff members from Weston City Hall, the Weston Community Center and the Public Works Department helped pack up and deliver everything to Western High School, where Harvest Drive hosts its Harvest Drive Boutique. In addition to donating toys, the

he holiday season was brighter for more than 2,500 families in need, thanks to the Harvest Drive. The program started 26 years ago as a simple canned food collection at Country Isles Elementary School to lend a helping hand to struggling families within the school. Today, Harvest Drive is a county-wide effort feeding over 10,000 people throughout Broward County. “Since day one, our mission has been to teach children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others,” explains Harvest Drive, Inc., Founder Renee Herman. “And, once again, our students came through for us!” She says the Weston schools put in an amazing effort. “These are the best kids ever!” she boasts. Herman was impressed by the generosity and support seen throughout the schools. Country Isles Elementary sold leaves to benefit Harvest Drive and delivered its donations to the flagship site at Western High School in a special

City of Weston also donated food from the Emergency Operations Center. At the end of each hurricane season, if there has been no storm or other emergency event, the City donates its non-perishable food supply to the Harvest Drive.

Consumer Assistance Is Just A Click Away BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK n the wake of a natural disaster like last October’s Hurricane Michael, it is important to know where to turn for help and information. The primary role of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Division of Consumer Services is to protect, inform and empower Florida’s consumers and businesses. The division serves as the state’s clearinghouse for consumer complaints and information, educating consumers and conducting investigations of unfair and deceptive trade practices. Some of the many tools available to consumers at FloridaConsumerHelp.com include: ▸▸ A-Z Resource Guide: Get directions to the most appropriate agency for assistance with a wide variety of topics. ▸▸ Business/Complaint Lookup: Search for information about whether a business is properly licensed/registered and review the company’s complaint history before engaging in business with them. ▸▸ Check-A-Charity: Search charity licensing and funding information to see how your contribution is being spent. ▸▸ Education: Find information on common scams and frauds, read or request publications on a variety of consumer related topics, or request a speaker for your next event or meeting. ▸▸ File a Complaint: File consumer complaints online or download complaint forms. ▸▸ Florida Do Not Call: Subscribe residential and mobile telephone numbers free of charge to avoid unwanted solicitation calls. ▸▸ Fuel: The potential for water contaminated fuel incidents increase after a considerable storm. If you witness flooding at a station during or immediately following a storm, report it to the department so it can inspect the storage tanks for water or sediment contamination. Always keep the receipt of purchase and immediately report any possible contaminated fuel incidents. ▸▸ Generators: Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal burning device inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. Keep these devices outdoors away from doors, windows, and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors. ▸▸ Price gouging: Anyone who suspects price gouging should call the Office of the Attorney General at 866-9NO-SCAM. ▸▸ Skimmers: Criminals often take advantage of the power outages to install skimming devices. Always check for security measures on the pump and be aware of your surroundings. Gas pumps may have internal security, such as fuel shut-offs or external security systems, such as security tape. Look around for possible cameras, or any suspicious equipment that doesn’t belong on the pump. Report any evident signs of tampering or unauthorized access to fuel dispensers to the department. ▸▸ Food Safety: Discard perishable food that has been stored in temperatures above 41 degrees for four or more hours. Dispose of any food that has an unusual odor or texture or feels warm to the touch. Inspect canned foods for damage. Damaged canned food shows swelling, leaking, punctures, holes, fractures, deep rusting, crushing or denting. If flooding occurs, discard any food not in a waterproof container that has come in contact with flood water. These helpful contacts are a good resource not only during times of disaster, but any time of year in our Florida paradise.

BY DANIEL J. STERMER, MAYOR, CITY OF WESTON elcome 2019. There is not a better place to call home than Weston! This is not just my humble opinion. Ranked the top 10 Best Cities for Families in Florida, as ranked by WalletHub just this November, or Money Magazine’s 2018 list of The Best Places to live in America or Verizon Business ranking of Best Small Cities for Small Businesses – Weston stands head and shoulders above others, not just in Florida, but throughout the country. As residents and business owners it is reassuring to hear that your hometown is so well thought of for all the reasons you chose to live or invest here. My fellow City Commissioners, Thomas Kallman, Margaret Brown, Byron Jaffe and newly elected Mary Molina-Macfie and I, commit to you our dedication to continue to work to make Weston the best city in the country. GREAT LEADERSHIP I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Commissioner Byron Jaffe on his unopposed re-election to Seat Three, after having served a partial term in office, first elected in March 2017 to fill the unexpired term of open Commission Seat Three. We welcome your continued compassion, focus and leadership. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie, Seat Four. Commissioner Molina-Macfie has been a Weston resident since 1992. She is Vice Chairperson of the Consumer Affairs Board of Broward County and a Board Member of the Weston YMCA. Professionally, Commissioner Molina-Macfie owns a janitorial service all the while a dedicated voice and volunteer for community groups throughout Broward. I would not cross her either – she happens to be a Black Belt in karate too! Mary is the proud mother of two daughters, Heather and Brook. For a full biography of each member of your City Commission, you can visit our city website at https://www.westonfl.org/government/city-commission/city-commission. COMMUNITY EVENTS With the great winter weather in south Florida comes a host of City events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. The 2019 Weston Winter Safety Expo will be held on Friday, January 25th from 6-8:30PM at Tequesta Trace Park at 600 Indian Trace. Once again, a unique phenomenon takes place within Weston … It snows! Join us for an educational and activity-filled evening in a comfortable blizzard-like environment… along with music, entertainment, kids’ activities, bounce houses and all the “big toys” of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. On display are police, fire and rescue vehicles of every kind with helicopters, marine unit, bomb squad, tactical rescue, Fish & Wildlife, FHP, Weston CERT, C.O.P and much more. This is a community event not to be missed. Next, we have concerts galore. On Saturday, January 26th is an all new Symphony of the Americas MÁGICO Visual Concerto which combines spellbinding visual photochoreography with familiar orchestral classics. This is a ticketed event at just $20 in advance and then there will be a free Symphony Pops concert in Town Center on March 10th. Our WestonNights Free Outdoor concert series in the park continues with #NOFILTER bringing chart topping hits of today and classics from the 70s, 80s and 90s on Saturday, February 9th and then JADED – An AEROSMITH TRIBUTE on March 16th. Both concerts will be held at the Event Stage in Weston Regional Park from 7-10PM. All you need to bring is a lawn chair! Every WestonNights event has food trucks on site for a complete date night, or night out with friends and family. BUT WAIT, there’s more! The ever-popular free monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April; the Foreign Film Series; free professional puppet shows and magic shows at the Weston Community Center; Celebrate the Arts Day in Weston Town Center; Weston World Fest; Community CPR Day, and the annual Royal Egg Hunt. This incredible lineup of events is possible through the efforts of our Parks and Recreation department and the passionate work of the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the Weston Music Society in partnership with the City, whose members volunteer their time to bring arts programming to residents. Details of all events can be found on our city website Events Calendar at WestonFL.org/Events and in our weekly E-Newsletter Newsday Tuesday – subscribe today!

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT

NSU University School Prepares Students for Success in College and Life BY STACEY BOMSER

N

SU University School is the only Junior Kindergarten through 12th grade private school in the area to be part of a major research university. Since 1971, it has utilized the unique resources, dynamic faculty, and exceptional facilities available on the Nova Southeastern University campus to personalize education for students at all levels. Head of School William Kopas, Ed.D., shares more about NSU University School’s teaching philosophy and college-preparatory curriculum. How would you describe NSU University School? For the past 47 years, NSU University School has provided a challenging and personalized education within a supportive environment for students of average to gifted abilities. Our students are prepared for productive lives and leadership roles through a program that focuses on academic excellence, extracurricular participation, and service to others. What is NSU University School’s teaching philosophy? We are a progressive private school that utilizes the latest research in learning theory to maximize student potential and bring out each student’s special gift or talent. We differentiate and personalize instruction for a wide range of student abilities. Our holistic instruction is oriented towards experiential learning opportunities that reflect real-life programming and utilize the resources available at NSU. Please describe your curriculum. Our college-preparatory curriculum is aimed at students with high academic standards. It is thematically based and integrates technology, real-world problem solving, collaboration and critical thinking. Our Early Childhood and Lower School programs stress the fundamentals of learning and how to learn while challenging students appropri-

ately. Middle School expands on this philosophy and Upper School offers Advanced Placement, Honors and Regular levels of coursework that prepare students for college and beyond. Many of our high school students are involved in university level research projects and work directly with NSU professors throughout the campus. We also have tremendous internship opportunities for our students.

What are the advantages of being part of a college campus? NSU University School is located on a 28-acre campus in the heart of Nova Southeastern University, affording students a safe and secure environment within a thriving scholarly community. Furthermore, our personalization, qualified and passionate educators, and connection to the university enables students to reach their potential and gain a strategic advantage. Within a rigorous and supportive environment, students achieve success in academics, athletics and the arts, and contribute to their community and various service organizations.

Please describe your students. NSU University School students are engaged and collaborative learners, innovative thinkers, and globally aware citizens who are prepared for college and life. Our inquiry-based curriculum, differentiated approach to learning, and opportunities for mentorship provide students and graduates with the knowledge, skills and confidence for success in and beyond the classroom. In addition, NSU University School students are civicallyminded. Beginning in Lower School, students participate in charitable efforts which continue through high school. On average, a graduating class will have performed over 50,000 hours of community service throughout the four years of Upper School. What are the credentials of your faculty? Our faculty value the importance of education. Over 75% have advanced degrees and a number also teach classes at NSU in both undergraduate and graduate programs. NSU University School teachers understand that every child learns in his or her

own way, so they continually develop new instructional approaches in order to reach every learner. All staff members receive training in differentiation. What is your background? This is my fourth year as Head of School at NSU University School, after serving five years as Upper School Director. Before coming to NSU University School, I was principal at Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York. Before that, I served in a variety of administrative capacities including assistant principal, dean of students, and summer school director for 16 years at Brophy Prep in Phoenix, Arizona. I received my Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University and my Masters from

Northern Arizona University. I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, where I was a member of four Big Ten Championship swim teams. In addition, I was an individual Big Ten Champion and a Big Ten Scholar Athlete. Speaking of sports, what types of extracurricular activities does NSU University School offer? We offer abundant opportunities for students including athletics at all levels, visual and performing arts programs, as well as a multitude of clubs. The NSU University School Speech and Debate team is ranked in the top 1% of all teams in the United States and we have had four National Champions in the past three years. Gator Run Students Eager to Join the Principal’s Lunch Bunch BY STACEY BOMSER

G

ator Run Elementary School Principal Keith Peters is a busy man, but he always makes time for lunch. A few days a week he opens his office for the Principal’s Lunch Bunch, inviting small groups of students to join him for lunch and lively conversation. He says he started the program years ago when he was an assistant principal and would conference individually with students to discuss their progress and work. While principal at Floranada Elementary, he expanded it, eating lunch with all of the third, fourth and fifth grade students to discuss school grades, test scores and their goals. “When I moved to Gator Run in 2013, I continued the lunchtime conversations, but the topics have evolved to a much more casual talk,” shares Mr. Peters, who prefers the title “Lead Learner” over principal. “They share about their favorite TV shows, what types of pets they have, what job they would like to have, and where is the best place in Weston to

get pizza or ice cream. I ask about their hobbies, how they spend their time off, what they like and dislike about school, and how we can make their experience better.” These lunchtime conversations are at the heart of Mr. Peters’ philosophy of education – that relationships must always come first. “My hope with having lunch with my students is to get to know them better and receive feedback from them. We are here for the students and we need to listen to their voice. I get a much better perspective of their experience at school from these conversations.” With more than 1,300 students in the school, finding the time for the Principal’s Lunch Bunch is no easy task. Mr. Peters says he has between two and three lunches a day a few times a week, and it takes the better part of the school year. Being able to join the Principal’s Lunch Bunch in third grade is a rite of passage at Gator Run. “The best is when the third graders come to my office for the first time,” notes Mr. Peters. “Their com-

ments are so funny: ‘This was the best day of my life!’ and ‘Your office is the most amazing place I have ever seen!’” He jokes that his office is basically his “man cave”. It’s filled with games such as Pop-A-Shot basketball, air hockey, pinball baseball and more. The children get to play after they finish lunch. The Principal’s Lunch Bunch is not the only way Mr. Peters connects with his students. He also likes to ride the school bus, giving him another chance to talk informally with the children.

POSITIVE PARENTING

2016 bestof weston

Vision Board for Kids BY IVIS MATEOS s we usher in a new year, now is a great time to take the opportunity to plan and visualize the future with your children. Since I was a teenager, I had a passion for writing down my dreams for the future and setting goals to achieve them. Some experts believe vision boards or dream boards empower you and increase achievement as you visualize the manifestation of your dreams. Napoleon Hill, the author of Think and Grow Rich, is considered the founder of the Science of Success and said, “Man, alone, has the power to transform his thoughts into physical reality; man, alone, can dream and make his dreams come true.” Dream boards teach children about setting-goals with aligned action. Achieving their set goals will help them build self-esteem and the desire to strive for greater things. Creating a dream board with your kids is quite fun and easy. Just follow these simple steps: 1.  Gather your materials. You will need: a large piece of construction paper or poster board; plenty of magazines, printed materials and even old photographs which you will use to cut and paste on your board; scissors; glue; markers and colorful pens; and glitter – to make it sparkly. 2.  Engage in a conversation with your child about their hopes and dreams. It is important to ask your children to be specific and descriptive in order to have a clear vision of their goals. This will encourage them to stay motivated by the board every time they see it. You can use proving questions such as: What do you want to be when you grow up and why? If your child says a firefighter, look for pictures to cut out of firefighters or things related to a firefighter, such as a fire truck, etc. Then, look for words or create words from the construction paper that describe what they want to be, such as firefighter, hero, to help others, etc. What things would you like to have? If the child says, “I want a puppy”, then cut out a picture of a puppy similar to the one they want. Be specific with your descriptive words, like “brown Labrador” or his name will be “Lucky”, and paste the pictures of the dog with the words. 3.  When you are done creating your boards, make sure you hang it in a place where the children can always see it, this will keep them focused and motivated. Don’t forget to have fun throughout the process. I would love to see your creative boards and invite you to email me a picture at tinitownweston@gmail.com. I wish you all a wonderful year ahead and encourage you to continue dream big!

BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN hould I have my child’s wisdom teeth extracted? This is a question I am asked frequently, especially at the end of orthodontic treatment. The question is very logical. We have been working to align the teeth for two years and everyone is excited to unveil their new smile to the world. The last thing that anyone wants is to leave the wisdom teeth to spoil our great work. On the other hand, the extraction of third molars is usually carried out by an Oral Surgeon using some form of sedation. The decision to refer must be thought out and based on science. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the decision to avoid extracting the Third Molars (AKA Wisdom Teeth) depends on their meeting the following criteria: completely erupted and non-impacted, completely functional, painless, free of decay, disease-free, capable of being properly cleaned. As can be seen from this list, the academy of oral surgery leans heavily toward extraction. This list fails to aid in my decision making in most cases, as the average teen completes orthodontic treatment between 13-14 yrs old and the wisdom teeth erupt between 17-21 years old. What I prefer to use as a guide is the anatomy of the mandible (lower jaw) and the developmental stage of the Third Molars. For example, there is a nerve that runs the length of the lower border of the mandible called the inferior alveolar nerve. Among other things, this nerve provides for our feeling in the lower lip. The Third Molars develop right over this nerve and it is not until around 15-16 yrs old that the roots of the teeth tend to approximate and sometimes even wrap around the nerve. I allow the third molar to grow and hopefully find a reasonable eruption path prior to the completion of development of its roots. If I find that there is too much pressure being placed on the 12-year molars, I will refer for evaluation prior to the full development of the roots. What this accomplishes is the removal of the Third Molars with a much reduced chance of damage to the nerve. As in most situations, timing is everything. Our protocol consists of consistent retainer wear as soon as braces are removed. We then monitor the third molars until they either come in or are removed. Consistent retainer wear is more than sufficient in maintaining that beautiful smile through the process. In fact, we are recommending long-term, night time wear of the retainer even if the Third molars are removed. As it turns out, the eruption of the Third molars is the most well known, but not the only factor which can cause shifting of the teeth over time.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Use in the Foot and Ankle BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

H

ealing after an injury involves a well-orchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small, colorless cell fragments in the blood called platelets. Platelets are formed in the bone marrow and are freely passing through the bloodstream in a resting state. However, when an injury occurs, the platelets become activated and start to gather at the injury site to release beneficial proteins called growth factors. This is the beginning of the healing process. For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created growing interest for medical use. New research and technology have expanded the application of this therapy for use in orthopedic procedures. Below are some answers to commonly asked questions about Platelet Rich Plasma therapy: What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)? Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells. What conditions can it treat? PRP can be used to treat the following conditions: arthritis (foot or ankle); ligament injuries (acute or chronic); tendon injuries (acute or chronic); joint pain; chronic inflammatory conditions; Achilles Tendonitis; Plantar Fasciitis; chronic nerve irritation (Neuritis); shin splints; and heel spurs.

How does the PRP process work? The doctor will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes. After, the injected area will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine) and the blood with its PRP will be injected into the area directly or with the aid of ultrasound or x-ray. Am I a candidate for treatment with PRP? Your physician will perform an examination to determine if the use of PRP will benefit you. If you are on anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place. Are there risks associated with this treatment? PRP uses your body’s own natural properties to treat your injury. Side effects utilizing PRP systems are very uncommon. Carlo A. t is now possible to enjoy the health benefits of fasting, while eating nutritious, delicious meals. You’ve probably heard about intermittent fasting and its many health benefits - the most talked about is being able to shed the pounds without going on a crazy starvation diet and still be able to enjoy foods you like. What really is intermittent fasting, and is this an option for you? Intermittent fasting is a diet that cycles between periods of eating and periods of non-eating. For example, 16 hours with no food followed by and 8-hour window of food consumption. It seems simple, but it can get complicated when you actually start doing it because there are many different ways to approach it. Some people fast for three days and then take a day off, while some have made intermittent fasting a way of life. Some others will just do it temporarily to see what the frenzy is all about and lose a couple of pounds in the process. Another reason why it is not so simple to follow is that there are different opinions about what is actually considered fasting and what is “allowable consumption” during the “fasting” period. Some people will only drink water while others incorporate black coffee and tea as well. Regardless of what modality you follow, numerous studies have shown that there are many health benefits to fasting, including longevity and improved health. It does not have to be intermittent, although many people favor that modality because it seems easy and bearable enough. Even though it can get challenging and you will probably go hungry, many people find they can make the sacrifice as they look forward to the eating window. So, what if I told you it is possible to practice intermittent fasting while still feeding your body. Think of it as tricking your body into thinking it is in fasting mode, while you are still able to eat and get in some nutrients. The future is here and it is indeed possible with the new Fasting Mimicking Diet. This 5-day meal program provides scientifically researched micro- and macro-nutrients in precise quantities and combinations that nourish you, but are not recognized as food by your body. What’s best about the program is that it is totally guided, so you will know exactly when and what to eat. All the meals are pre-packaged and included in the program, and you will enjoy the health benefits of fasting in just five days. The meals included are completely safe. This breakthrough diet has been proven to positively affect health markers and decrease body fat without causing muscle loss, which can be up to 30% with other diets and fasts. If you are ready to kick start your metabolism and enjoy the health benefits of fasting without starving your body, this revolutionary diet may be an option for you. Manatee Bay Students Have a Taste for Knowledge BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents in Meryl Jefferson’s fourth grade gifted class at Manatee Bay Elementary School have a taste for knowledge – literally. The students made solar ovens to cook s’mores. As part of the physical science unit on heat energy, Mrs. Jefferson introduced the ways heat travels. To help illustrate this, she tasked students to design their own solar ovens and then use sunlight as fuel. Mrs. Jefferson says the children went through the STEM Engineering Design Process to design their ovens. Working in small groups, the students had to make a portable solar oven that would absorb and retain enough heat to cook a marshmallow and melt chocolate to make a s’more. “Sunlight is the fuel for a solar oven. The sunlight is converted into heat energy that is used to cook food,” explains Mrs. Jefferson. “Sunlight needs to be able to enter the oven directly and then be reflected to the cooking areas. The oven needs to be dark on the inside to absorb the sunlight and it needs insulation to retain the heat once it is inside.” It took about an hour to cook the s’mores, with the students checking the temperature inside their ovens at five-minute intervals. Once cooked, the children enjoyed their tasty treats.

Mrs. Jefferson’s students learned a lot from this hands-on exercise. Abby shared that, “if you don’t have a greenhouse effect in your oven, then the s’mores won’t cook as well,” while Ellie noted that, “you have to keep your oven insulated or all of the heat

had different values. For example, an inch of tape cost 50 cents. Mrs. Jefferson declared the Solar S’mores lesson a success, saying this is something the students will always remember, and they will retain what

will get out.” Ethan also recognized the importance of insulation to this project, stating that “you have to have a way to absorb the heat or the food won’t get hot.” Juan observed, “The sun is not only for plants. You can use it to cook food.” In addition to science, this project was also a math lesson. Students had a choice of supplies which they could “purchase” with their $10 budget. The supplies

they learned. “There is so much more to educating a child than preparing them for a standardized test. That is also important, but in the long run, it is my job to prepare them for life and to be lifelong learners,” she shares. “They learned so much by working in a cooperative group and having to adjust their opinions in order to compromise with each other.”

Hands-on Learning Sprouts in Country Isles Elementary Garden BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or years, second grade students at Country Isles Elementary School have studied life science by planting a garden. This year, the project was expanded to include kindergarten classes, with the two grades working together as Garden Buddies. The project began with a Meet and Greet. The buddies read books related to planting such as Isabella’s Garden, The Carrot Seed, Planting a Rainbow, and Growing Vegetable Soup. The students also enjoyed making and eating dirt cups (pudding treats). On their second meeting, the students planted cilantro, basil, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and kale in the garden. The supplies were donated by Lowes, as well as the PTA and generous families. Throughout the school year, the children will be measuring, watering, and observing the plants, as well as eating their crops. 76 JANUARY 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

Second Grade Team Leader Tracy Adams says the children are already seeing tiny peppers sprouting and blooms on the tomato plants, but what is really blossoming is the relationships between the Garden Buddies. “In addition to social skills like collaboration and cooperation, they are getting hands-on, real world experiences. Students are learning a sense of purpose and responsibility,” explains Ms. Adams. “Our second graders get to experience being positive role models for their kindergarten buddies. They get to be mini-teachers while exploring and learning.” Principal Mindy Morgan encourages the use of handson learning projects such as this. “Hands-on learning helps build well-rounded students. Students are more actively engaged and are interested in new learning experiences. It brings what they are learning in books to life. The garden project allows the students to see how they can take something that is starting as a seed and can eventually be

eaten as a meal.” In addition to covering science and math standards, Garden Buddies also teaches writing standards. The students are journaling observations about the growth of their plants. Students take measurements and draw what they see periodically. “Working with their buddies, they will also be creating stories about creatures that may be living beneath our garden or animals that might be visiting the garden,” notes Ms. Adams. Principal Morgan says the crossgrade collaboration is important because it leads to deeper learning and understanding. “It allows students to work together to solve problems. Students can bounce ideas off one another. Students are enthusiastic when learning materials from their peers.”

Field Trip Exposes Indian Trace Elementary Fourth Graders to Florida History BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he fourth grade Social Studies curriculum focuses on Florida History. Students learn about Florida’s founders: the explorers who settled in St. Augustine as well as the Native American tribes that originally inhabited the area. To help bring history to life, fourth graders from Indian Trace Elementary School took a field trip to Billie Swamp Safari, a preserve on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. “Billie Swamp Safari takes the children back into the time when Florida was being discovered by the Europeans and how hard life became for the Native Americans,” explains fourth grade teacher Katie Monioudis. “It shows students how amazing the Natives were and how they lived off the land. It shows them how important the Everglades was, and still is, to life in Florida.” Run by the Seminole Tribe, Billie Swamp Safari offers airboat rides, a swamp buggy to see animals in the wild, a petting zoo, reptile show, museum and more. Mrs. Monioudis says from this field trip the children learn about life out in the Everglades. “The movie in the museum is amazing and sad at the same time to see how the Natives were treated.” Visiting the Everglades was a nice follow-up to a project the students completed on the book The Last

Egret by Harvey E. Oyer. The author visited the school a few years ago. “It is a beautiful story about the Everglades and how challenging life was in the 19th century,” explains Mrs. Monioudis. “Charlie and his friends travel deep into the unexplored Everglades to search for bird feathers, it was a booming trade at the time, and discover they do not want to hunt the birds.” After reading the book and completing a DBQ (Document Based Question) assignment, students were able to put it into context with their field trip. “We rode on a buggy through the swamp land and saw Native Americans that still live out there and sell the jewelry they make,” shares Mrs. Monioudis. “They saw many animals and listened to stories of the past.” In addition to learning about how the Everglades is home to many species, the children also learn its importance to our environment. “Hopefully the kids appreciate where we live and why the Everglades is so important,” notes Mrs. Monioudis. “They learn about how the water flows through most of South Florida and all about Lake Okeechobee.” To culminate the year of studies on Florida history, students will take an overnight field trip to St. Augustine.

CBS 4 Meteorologist Visits Falcon Cove Computer Coding Class BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents today are growing up in the digital age. Students at Falcon Cove Middle School are learning first-hand how technology can help make the world a better place. CBS 4 Chief Meteorologist Craig Setzer recently visited with a seventh grade computer science class, offering advice on how students can improve computer programs they are creating to help keep people safe during a hurricane. Falcon Cove offers a unique software development curriculum. In eighth grade, students can take Code.org’s Computer Science Discoveries class to earn high school credit. To prepare for that course, seventh graders enroll in Fundamentals of Web Design and Software Application. During the software application portion of the course, students use the Codesters curriculum to learn how to program using the Python computer

programming language. To enhance the projectbased curriculum, Computer Science Teacher Jaymi Feller designed a Problem Based Learning project on the day Hurricane Michael was hitting the Florida Panhandle. Knowing students had learned the basics of programming sprites to simulate the direction of the storm, Mrs. Feller built a challenge for her students. “It all started with the Problem Based Learning query of: How do we keep lives safer during storms through computer modeling and software application?,” she explains. “The students had to research what applications are now being used in the meteorology industry and the other applications used to keep citizens safe during a storm.” With their research complete, using cooperative learning groups the students then had to design an application of interest to them with the purpose of

keeping lives safer before, during or after a hurricane. To aid in their software development, Mrs. Feller arranged to have CBS 4 Chief Meteorologist (and Weston resident) Craig Setzer visit the class and discuss how technology is integrated into meteorology. Mrs. Feller’s students prepared questions to ask Mr. Setzer to assist them in defining and designing their Codester applications. She says he gave a wonderful presentation and thoroughly answered the students’ questions, explaining the technology involved in predicting hurricanes. In turn, the students shared some of their software applications with Mr. Setzer.

Cypress Bay Launches Cyber Security Program BY JENNA FRIEDMAN, STUDENT WRITER

C

ypress Bay High School is one of only two schools in the nation to allow students to take part in a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) cyber-security program. The FBI Cyber-STEM program should open doors for students’ future academic and career paths. “I think the FBI will guide them and give them information like where to go and what programs to look for in cyber security,” said teacher Caryn Corridon. “This program will hopefully get these kids on track to a future in this department.” Corridon said this new curriculum will allow students to possess the necessary skills in order to hold a profession in programs such as the FBI and Homeland Security. “As we go through the years, I think we will be able to add to this program and the kids who are a part of it will be significantly more educated on these topics than if the classes were not offered,” Corridon said. He believes taking this class as a ninth grader will help him to gain knowledge about and begin working towards his dream career in cyber-security. “Taking this class is definitely going to help me in future years if I do end up pursuing a career in the FBI or anything relating to cyber-security,” Maehlman said. “I think this program will make sure that I am faced with

plenty of opportunities.” Because this program is new and an application-only class, Corridon said she is unsure of what will happen in the future. “I don’t know if the program will continue to grow, but plenty of students applied and took interest this year,” Corridon said. “I think we will be able to expand it year by year and even if we keep it highly selective, we can still add to the curriculum and teach different skills.” Junior Cobi Gardener, who is cur-

rently taking AP Computer Science Principles, said although he is not in the FBI Cyber-STEM program, he would be interested in learning about cyber-security. Because the program is only offered to incoming freshman, sophomores and juniors, Gardener said he is disappointed that he won’t have the opportunity to participate. “We do learn a little bit about cyber-security in the class I am taking, but I think if I was able to complete the entire program, I would be a lot more informed on the topic,” Gardener said. In order to receive FBI certification for the completion of this course, students must take a few required classes, including AP Computer Science Principles, Comprehensive Law honors and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Informational Technology, before they graduate. n Jenna Friedman is a junior at Cypress Bay High School. Weston Schools Salute Our Veterans BY STACEY BOMSER

n observance of Veterans Day, Weston elementary schools invited family members who are United States veterans or active members of the military to enjoy a complimentary lunch at their child’s school as a way of thanking them for their service. Eagle Point Elementary School hosted an “All American” lunch. The PTA created a patriotic backdrop for the stage. Students and the special veterans in their lives were invited to sit on the stage during lunch.

In addition, Principal Christine de Zayas says several parents who are veterans led the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the national anthem on the morning news. “We were also privileged to have Pierre Ramos, our head facilities serviceperson and a U.S. Army veteran, present to all of our Dual Language classes about his service to our country,” notes Principal de Zayas. Indian Trace Elementary School also decorated its stage for the special patriotic lunch. Principal

Amy Winder says approximately 30 families participated in the program, including three generations sitting together. “It was really sweet,” shares Principal Winder. “The students wrote cards and letters to present to our guests. Each student who had a guest had the opportunity to introduce them to the entire cafeteria.” She says one of the most touching moments of the special day, was when, during lunch, one father used his phone to Skype with the child’s uncle who is currently serving over-

seas. “We had the whole cafeteria say a big ‘thank you’ through the phone!” At Manatee Bay Elementary, students made special thank-you cards to honor veterans and the art teacher created a beautiful banner, which hung in the office, to show appreciation for their service.. The Veterans Day lunch program is part of an initiative by Broward County Public Schools to honor military veterans and active duty members for their service with special events and ceremonies planned across the District.

Instant Facial Rejuvenation with Fillers BY DR. TAMY FAIERMAN, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON s we age, we lose fat from our face, especially under the eyes, in the cheeks, nose, pre-jowl region, and even in the lip. As these areas deflate, it makes the face look hollowed, creating shadows where there were none in youth. In addition to the shadows, the volume loss can cause wrinkles to form, especially in the area where dimples usually occur. A Liquid Facelift uses injectable fillers or Bio-Stimulators such as Sculptra, to replace the volume lost during the aging process. They are minimally invasive and done in the office setting, with virtually no downtime, especially now with the ability to use small, blunt-tip cannulas that are less traumatizing than needles, thus reducing bruising and swelling. Below are a few reasons why an increasing number of patients are choosing nonsurgical treatments over surgery: Filler Treatments Designed for Today’s Lifestyle Men and women today are busier than ever. Setting aside the couple of weeks that would be necessary for surgery and recovery time after a facelift may be challenging when looking at work schedules, kids’ activities and how much vacation time you have saved up. Yet, nonsurgical rejuvenation procedures can be completed over a lunch break. BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport, and dermal fillers take just a few minutes to administer, and the results appear within a few days. Safe for Those Nervous About the Commitment Nonsurgical rejuvenation procedures are often temporary, lasting several months before a maintenance treatment is needed. For men and women who may feel hesitant about committing to the permanence of surgery, injectables and fillers offer the perfect “try it on and see if you like it” approach to improving their look. In fact, it’s also common for patients to try out injectables and fillers as part of a regular antiaging regimen for a few years, and then move forward with surgery once they feel more comfortable with how their results are likely to look. Niche Customization Part of the reason there are so many nonsurgical procedures performed these days is that products have been developed to address and focus on specific areas that really bother the patients. For example, my favorite injectable to use for plumping and defining lips is Volbella, a hyaluronic acid protein, which is a naturally occurring substance in your body. This procedure alone can take years off the face. Another is replacing lost volume or correcting bumps on the bridge of the nose, with a nonsurgical rhinoplasty. The benefits of a nose job without surgery are it is instant and beautiful with little to no downtime and little or no pain. These niche fillers allow a plastic surgeon to create wonderful results with a minimally invasive approach.

Non-Surgical Vision Therapy BY DR. JANE THERRIEN oday there are more options than ever for vision correction. Here is a look at a few types of non-surgical vision correction options we are pleased to offer our patients: Neurolenses Neurolens announced the first and only prescription glasses to have a contoured prism that reduces the headaches, neck/shoulder pain and eyestrain that patients get from being on electronics such as computer, tablets, and cellphones, as well as reading or doing detailed work. After years of research done at a neurology center, it was discovered that there is a relationship between the eyes and the brain. When these studies were conducted, patients that suffered from those symptoms had a trait in common: a misalignment in their vision when using digital devices. It has been said that people usually do not suspect that these symptoms are related to their eyes. Since Americans spend more than nine hours a day on electronic devices, the visual demands of this digital lifestyle have increased the number of these individuals who experience symptoms. The main objective of Neurolenses is to give the patient the most comfortable vision possible. In a survey of patients who decided to purchase Neurolenses, it was seen that 93% found symptom relief and 73% stated that their symptoms were reduced or completely eliminated after 45 days. Orthokeratology Orthokeratology has been a treatment that has been offered to patients for more than 40 years, however, there has been an increasing interest in the last decade. Orthokeratology is a non-surgical technique where patients wear a special kind of contact lens designed to gradually reshape the cornea, or the clear covering of the front of the eye. When doing this, it allows an improvement or elimination of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia in a safe and reversible manner. Unlike regular soft contact lenses, these are more rigid contact lenses that are uniquely designed for the patient and are specifically designed to be worn overnight while sleeping. When they are removed in the morning, the patient will have clear vision without the use of glasses or contacts during the day. Since these lenses are customized to each individual, we use an instrument called a corneal Topographer that shows exactly how your cornea is shaped. The information from the cornea mapping, in addition to the size of the cornea and the patient’s specific prescription, is used to design the retainer lenses needed to create the Ortho-K effect. Scleral Lenses If you have been told in the past that you were unable to wear contact lenses because of an irregular cornea, keratoconus, corneal transplant, history of RK, Lasik or PRK trauma-damaged corneas, you might want to consider wearing scleral lenses. Scleral lenses have gained popularity in the last decade and are specially designed to cover the whole corneal surface which makes the lens rest on the “white” of the eye (sclera). These larger-diameter gas permeable lenses offer the crisp vision of a gas permeable lens combined with the comfort of a soft contact lens.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Possibility of Private School BY EVAN BARON his time of year, parents are often planning for school for next year. If the child is in public school and he/she is remaining in the same school, there usually are no issues to be discussed. If, however, one or both of the parents are considering private school, certain issues may arise. What school will we enroll the child in? Who will pay for the expense? Is private school even to be considered? If so, will it be religious based? These are some of the questions which often need to be addressed. If the parties have already entered into a Marital Settlement Agreement and Parenting Plan, and there is a provision which states that the minor child(ren) will attend private school, then the parties were wise enough to plan ahead and resolve the issue before it became a topic of litigation. Of course, there still maybe the question of which school will they attend? Often times it depends on cost, distance from home and, obviously, the school’s reputation. It would seem that parents, even divorced parents, could decide what is best for their children. Of course, this is not always true. If private school was not originally agreed to, then an Agreement must be worked out between the parties. Private school is not a right, but rather it is a privilege. There are public schools which will provide an education free of charge. In most instances, a parent cannot be forced to pay for private school. If, however, certain conditions exist, the Courts could rule otherwise. For example, if a child has been attending private school for many years, then a judge may not want to disturb the child’s education. Of course, this is very much contingent upon the affordability of private school as well as the parent’s ability to contribute. If one of the parents does not have the financial means to pay, then the other parent could certainly agree to pay 100% of the costs. This, however, will not be considered a substitute for a child support obligation. The other issue is whether there is the necessity for private school. Many children have special needs due to learning disabilities or perhaps ADHD. The public schools often do not have the resources to provide for these children. Private school maybe the only answer to insure that they receive the care and education they require. What if one of the parents refuses to enroll the child in a private school and the other parent cannot afford it? Will the courts put the child’s needs first? The law says that in certain cases a judge can order a parent to pay for private school, even if he/she objects. This will only occur if it can be proven that the public school system cannot accommodate the child and the refusing parent has the financial means to contribute. If it is too great a hardship the court’s hands maybe tied. Based upon Florida’s “Shared Responsibility” laws, decisions about school should be a joint decision. Neither parent should take it upon himself/herself to decide without discussion. As in most instances, a few minutes of constructive dialogue can save hours of litigation.

Great Tips To Improving Your Game BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL s with learning all motor skills, you must crawl before you walk or run. For golf, that process means learning to putt first, and then learning to chip and pitch, which will help new golfers transition to a full swing more smoothly, and also help them avoid bad habits. You only really need three clubs to start: a putter, a wedge, and a 7 or 8 iron. Here are some other tips to keep in mind to improve your game: Use a consistent stretching routine. This will be helpful when learning the game, and it certainly won’t hurt any other areas of your life either. Remember, in regard to flexibility: what you don’t use, you lose. Start small. When you are ready to venture out onto the course, try to begin on a Par 3. The short game (100 yards and in) makes up 60% of the game, and it’s where most people lose or gain the majority of their strokes when trying to keep or improve their score. Try to play with better players than you. Play with someone who can teach you a little bit about the etiquette and traditions of golf. It helps to make you feel like a part of the game, and the sense of belonging to the golf community is important as a beginner. Develop a proper warm-up routine. Consistently arrive an hour before you tee off. Use this time to stretch and practice a little of each aspect of the game you expect to encounter on the course. Focus on the areas of your game you typically struggle with. Focus more on accuracy rather than distance. Distance will come as the proficiency in proper technique improves. Accuracy is the key to improving your score and enjoying the game. Taking an extra club and swinging at about 80% is usually one of the easiest ways to do this, rather than trying to time swings at top speed all the time. Remember: If you have to swing that hard to get the ball to the target, you probably have the wrong club. Develop consistent pre-shot routines. This will help keep you from overthinking and get you into a state of playing using rhythm, feel, and instinct over relying solely on intellect. Over time, the best players develop routines which make the technique of their swing more a conditioned response than a conscious effort. Make improvements. Be aware of what aspects of your game need improvement and try to take consistent instruction to improve upon them. You can do this by keeping track of the greens you hit in regulation, your fairways hit, and your putts per round.

BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER hether you like it or not, if you play golf you are an athlete. An athlete is only as good as his/her dedication and wisdom towards training. Training smart for any sport involves knowing exactly what exercises to do, how to do them and when. With this knowledge you will be able to feel better and play better, with less chance of injury. The following key stretches may not only help you stay injury-free, they may even improve your golf game. Make these stretches a regular component of your training routine. They are best done after a brisk walk, and before and after play and practice. These exercises will help to prepare most of the major muscle groups involved in the golf swing, enhancing range of motion and thus reducing chance of injury. They do not require special equipment, and they can be performed virtually anywhere in just a few minutes. Back of Leg: This exercise stretches the large muscles (hamstrings) at the back of your thighs. With your leg supported on a low object, bend forward slightly at the hips until you feel a gentle pull. Hold. Side Bending: This exercise works the muscles on the sides of your back, waist and hips. Bend to the point of a gentle “pulling” sensation, and hold. Hip Rotation: This stretch effects the muscles in your buttocks, hips and pelvis. Pull your knee up and across your chest towards the opposite shoulder. Try to sit upright. Hip Shift: This exercise stretches the lateral hip and thigh muscles. Place your left foot behind your right while supporting yourself against a wall or tree with your left hand. With your right hand push your right hip in towards the wall. Repeat with opposite side. Back Extension: Back extension helps the muscles that bend your spine backward. Place your hands on your hips with your thumbs firmly pressed against your lower back. Bend backward until you feel a comfortable stretch. Look up. Shoulder Stretch: Clasp your hands behind your back with your arms straight. Move your hands backward and upward, as high as is comfortable until you feel a stretch. Be careful not to force your arms up so high that you feel pain. Look up. When performing stretches, keep these points in mind: ▸▸ Be cautious. Stretch gently and slowly. Hold each stretch for 20 seconds. Do not bounce. Do not force. Do not hurt. Do not rush. ▸▸ If you do not do these stretches within 15 minutes of tee time, be prepared not to play because your body will not be ready to perform. ▸▸ It is best to stretch when your muscles are pumped with blood. For this reason it is most beneficial to stretch after play or practice, and after a brisk five minute walk. ▸▸ Allow enough time to stretch adequately. Do each stretch four times.

Potential Complication of Textured Breast Implants BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ccording to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery performed, with over 300,000 procedures performed in 2017. The safety and documented positive impact of breast enhancement on an individual’s self esteem has been well documented. However, there has been increasing awareness of a potential long-term complication of breast augmentation with textured breast implants – Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). There are several important facts that all patients should know regarding this disease process. Breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma is a rare and treatable type of T-cell lymphoma that can develop around breast implants. It is not a cancer of the breast tissue itself. The latency of development between implant insertion and diagnosis of BIA-ALCL has been from two to twenty-eight years with a median of eight years. No cases have been definitively identified associated with patients who have had smooth implants. The disease is associated with the increased surface area of textured implants in both saline and silicone implants. The majority of patients present with fluid around the implant as a delayed seroma. The diagnosis is confirmed by aspirating the fluid around the implant under ultrasound guidance and checking the cytology of the fluid. The majority of patients are cured of their disease by bilateral total capsulectomy (removal of the capsule around the implant) and implant removal. Rare patients will present with a mass and have increased risk of requiring radiotherapy and chemotherapy. What causes ALCL? The present theory is that implant texturing, bacteriologic contamination and genetic factors have been implicated and are undergoing further study. Women should not have their implants removed if they are asymptomatic. If a woman experiences a change in her breasts, especially a swelling or lump, she should undergo examination and appropriated imaging including an ultrasound and fine needle aspiration of any fluid around the implant. The current lifetime risk of BIA-ALCL is estimated to be 1:3817 to 1:30,000 women with textured implants. Since the initial case reported in 1996, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recognizes 255 cases in the U.S. and a total of 615 women worldwide as of November 2018. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. PET CARE

Spaying or Neutering Your Dog BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM ne of the most important steps you can take to ensure the lifelong health of your dog is to have him or her neutered or spayed. This relatively simple procedure will keep your dog healthier and reduce certain unwanted behaviors. You are also doing your part to help reduce the numbers of unwanted puppies that are placed in animal shelters each year. What Is a “Spay”? Spaying, also known as ovariohysterectomy, is a surgical procedure in which the reproductive organs (ovaries and uterus) are removed from a female dog. The procedure is performed while your pet is under general anesthesia. While spaying is generally a simple and safe procedure, it is still a major surgery in which the abdominal cavity is opened to remove the reproductive organs. At the end of the procedure, the incision is closed with sutures and/or staples and will take ten to 14 days to heal. Depending on the age, size, and health of your dog, she may stay at your veterinarian’s office for a few hours or a few days. Be sure to follow your veterinarian’s recommendations regarding pain

medication and aftercare, such as keeping your dog calm and quiet for a few days. What Is a “Neuter”? Also called a castration, neutering is a surgical procedure in which both testicles are completely removed from a male dog. Neutering is a minor surgical procedure that is done while your dog is under general anesthesia. Your pet’s abdominal cavity is not opened during a neutering procedure. At the end of the procedure, the incision is closed with sutures and will take ten to 14 days to heal. As with spayed animals, your dog may stay at your veterinarian’s office for a few hours or a few days depending on his age, size, and health. Be sure to follow your veterinarian’s recommendations regarding aftercare. Why Should I Spay or Neuter My Dog? Research shows that removing the reproductive organs of female pets before their first heat cycle (around six months of age) significantly reduces the chance of breast cancer. Spaying also removes the possibility of uterine infection as well as ovarian or uterine cancer. In males, neutering eliminates the possibility of enlargement of the prostate gland as well as testicular cancer. Altering a pet also reduces the influence of reproductive hormones on a pet’s behavior, making him or her less likely to roam or exhibit aggressive behavior. Another very important reason is that spaying

or neutering your dog helps to reduce the nation’s pet overpopulation problem. Sadly, according to The Humane Society of the United States, between three and four million unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized each year in the nation’s pet shelters, and that is probably a conservative number. Even if you can guarantee homes for all the puppies your dog delivers, it simply means there will be fewer potential homes available for other unwanted pets. When Should I Spay or Neuter My Dog? Most dogs are able to reproduce by the time they are six to 12 months of age, so the procedure should be done before then to eliminate the chance of an unwanted litter. The cost of spaying or neutering depends on the sex, size, and age of your dog, your veterinarian’s fees, and a number of other variables. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact 954-385-8389 or www.animalhealthcenteratweston.com.

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Slender Fit U Will Help You Lose Weight and Get Healthier BY DEBBY TEICH

I

s focusing on health and well-being is at the top of your list of New Year’s resolutions? After celebrating the holidays with family and friends and indulging in high calorie foods at festive meals and parties, are your clothes feeling a little tighter and the numbers on the scale a little higher? If you have struggled with diets in the past, Slender Fit U can help you lose that holiday bulge and achieve your goal of getting healthier in 2019. It works fast - without exercise and hunger pains! Slender Fit U is helping clients lose the weight, get healthier and even reduce or eliminate medications with a very simple to follow medically supervised weight loss program. Clients typically lose 1⁄2 to 1 pound of actual body fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods. The Slender Fit U program also helps clients modify their relationship with food and eating habits, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher, often referred to as the “HCG Guru,” truly understands the benefits of the program and works closely with her clients to help them achieve maximize results. She lost 25 pounds in six weeks on Geri Kelleher, Owner the program and has and Program Director kept it off for 11 years. Slender Fit U changed her life forever. Soon after, she started helping others achieve their own weight loss goals. In 2010, she opened a clinic in Davie. A few years later she opened a second clinic in Coral Springs. Geri answered some commonly asked questions about the Slender Fit U program. What do love most about your job? The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this easy program. How does Slender Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage available for weight loss. Do you offer B12 shots? Yes. We also give injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination of HCG and B12 helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods. Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this

was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” How much can clients expect to lose? The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. How many programs do you offer? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. On the 23-day program, women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. On the 46-day program, the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40-50 pounds for men. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG/B12 program, you go on a threeweek maintenance program, gradually introducing a higher calorie diet and making sure that you do not gain any more than two or three pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long- term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Before starting the diet, you will get a physical examfrom one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. David lost 53 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

AFTER

"I feel incredible. I haven't weighed this little in at least a decade. The diet was easy to follow and I lost over 50 pounds. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is serious about losing a lot of weight." – David

Maria lost 27 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

AFTER

"I'm very happy with my results. It is also a very friendly environment. I will recommend Slender Fit U to my friends and family." – Maria

Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low-calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed. How does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low-calorie diet during the 23 or 46-day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. The female body uses this substance during pregnancy where high levels are produced to almost completely control the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? Because HCG is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects. What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes proteins, fruit and vegetables. This makes for an easy transition onto stabilization and then back to regular life. Are clients hungry on the diet? Most people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They are getting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat, depending on how much fat they have. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. Slender Fit U clients usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800-calorie limit! SEE AD PAGE 27

Rotary is a critical link to helping Rise Against Hunger meet the United Nations’ goal of ending world hunger by 2030. This type of initiative is part of Rotary’s determination to address the pressing needs in the world, especially in light of statistics by FoodAidFoundation.org that estimates some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That’s about one in nine people on earth. The vast majority of the world’s hungry people live in developing countries, where 12.9 percent of the population is undernourished. n The Weston Rotary Club meets Thursdays at 7:30am at the Weston Hills Country Club.
