Happy Valentine’s Day!

M

any of us will be purchasing our chocolates and flowers for our sweethearts, or writing our dearest a love letter or two, on February 14th. Valentine’s Day has evolved from a somber Christian day of remembrance into a day for all of us to celebrate those we love most. Be sure to look for some great Valentine’s Day gift ideas and deals in this month’s Our City. Here are a few fun facts you may not have known about Valentine’s Day: ▸▸ About 1 in 30 pet owners purchase a Valentine’s Day present for their pet. ▸▸ Much like kids at school, in Victorian times Valentine’s Day cards were sent anonymously. ▸▸ Over 800 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year and almost all of those cards are purchased within a week of February 14th. ▸▸ In 1573, Britain’s King Henry VII declared February 14th Valentines Day (unfortunately his son wasn’t a very good Valentine). ▸▸ Americans buy more than 30 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate each year. ▸▸ Almost 200 million roses are expected to be purchased on Valentine’s Day this year. So, this February 14th, when you give your most cherished loved one that something special, you will know the rest of the story. Happy Valentine’s Day! Sincerely,

Learn How to Save a Life at Weston Community CPR Day BY STACEY BOMSER

Journal of Medicine state hands-only CPR has been proven to be equally effective in the early stages of cardiac arrest. Hands-only CPR is simple to learn and easy to perform as it has just two easy steps. First, call 9-1-1 if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse. Second, push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of a familiar song that has 100 to 200 beats per minute. Song examples include Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees, Crazy in Love by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, or Walk the Line by Johnny Cash. “The beauty of hands-only CPR is that it can be performed by anyone physically capable of pushing down hard and fast in the middle of an adult’s chest,” states Chief Draizin. “Children as young as eight have made a difference and saved the life of a cardiac arrest victim.”

In addition to hands-only CPR, participants will learn how to use an automatic defibrillator (AED) and how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on choking victims. New this year is “Stop the Bleed”, which teaches how to control bleeding. Weston Community CPR Day is open to anyone, ages eight and up. No reservation is required. Simply stop by the Weston Community Center on February 23rd anytime between 10am and 2pm. Weston BSO Fire Rescue and Emergency Services also offers free traditional “Heart Saver” CPR certification classes to residents and businesses. For more information call 954-389-2015.

n less than 30 minutes you can learn how to save a life. The City of Weston, Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, and Cleveland Clinic Florida are teaming up for the second annual Weston Community CPR Day. The free program takes place on February 23rd at the Weston Community Center. Weston District Fire Chief Todd Draizin says it is important for everyone, young and old, to know CPR. “When a victim suffers from cardiac arrest, blood is no longer being circulated throughout the body bringing life sustaining oxygen to the brain, lungs and organs. It is essential to restore cardiac circulation as quickly as possible to prevent irreversible damage and ultimately death. The quicker these life-saving techniques are started, the better chance for the patient to have minimal complications and a positive outcome. Since family members and bystanders are often the first to witness these cardiac emergencies, they can offer the victims the greatest chance of survival by starting CPR before responders arrive.” Weston Community CPR Day will teach handsonly CPR; there is no mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Weston Named Best Place to Live in Florida BY STACEY BOMSER

T

hose of us who call Weston home know what a great city this is, but now the whole world knows too. Money magazine just released its ranking of The Best Places to Live in Every State and Weston was chosen the Best Place to Live in the State of Florida. Mayor Daniel Stermer says this recognition is a true reflection of what City leaders and residents have always known. “Weston has all of the qualities that families want, and that in turn attracts a quality business community. As leaders we have always done the long-range planning and invested in our infrastructure needs, staffing and development to ensure the quality of life elements that today reap the rewards of this recognition and so many others. We believe Weston has always had all of the elements of a top City: strong quality schools, high quality public safety services and low crime, access to quality health care, top notch parks and recreation, and fiscally sound government.”

Those qualities were among the criteria Money magazine used to determine its list. Researchers began by looking only at cities with a population of 50,000 or more. They then eliminated any city that had more than double the national crime average, less than 85% of the state’s median household income, or a lack of ethnic diversity. The next step was to collect more than 135,000 different data points to narrow the list. The greatest weight was placed on economic health, public school performance and local amenities. It’s a Party in the Park with WestonNights Concert Series BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he popular WestonNights Concert Series continues with another evening of music under the stars. On Saturday, February 9th, #NoFilter takes the stage at Weston Regional Park. #NoFilter is the house band for the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team, but they have quite a following throughout Florida. Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation, says he discovered them while vacationing in the Florida Keys. “I saw this band live in Key West and thought that their high energy performance of well-known hits through the decades would be exciting,” shares Decker. “They play a lot of music that will be recognizable to everyone.” The band plays chart-topping hits from today as well as classics from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Although there is no set playlist, Decker says #NoFilter’s repertoire includes everything from Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars to Bon Jovi, The Bee Gee’s and Journey. Recent concerts have included Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon, Can’t Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake, All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor, Poison by Bell Biv Davoe, Ride Wit Me by Nelly, Pour Some Sugar on Me by Def Leppard, and more. According to the band’s website, #NoFilter brings

a fast-paced, energetic performance to keep the audience entertained throughout the entire evening. With a state-of-the-art light and video show, everything looks better with…#NoFilter. Decker says he’s overwhelmed by the popularity of the WestonNights Concert Series. “It has become an event that people look forward to every year and we are excited to introduce new bands to keep the series fresh.” The WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series concludes on Saturday, March 16th with Jaded: An Aerosmith Tribute. Turnstiles, the ultimate tribute to the music of Billy Joel, kicked off the three-concert series in December. All shows are presented by

the City of Weston. All WestonNights concerts take place from 7-10pm on the event stage in Weston Regional Park. The event stage is close to the park’s largest playground, which is a plus for families with smaller children. Concert goers should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to sit back and enjoy the music under the stars. Guests are welcome to bring coolers and picnic dinners; alcohol is not permitted. Food trucks will be on site selling a variety of food and beverages. For more information on the WestonNights Concert Series call 954-384-4321 or visit www.westonfl.org/events.

he City of Weston prides itself on offering residents a culturally-rich calendar of activities. While adults may prefer the symphony orchestra concerts or foreign films, there are plenty of programs geared specifically to children (and their parents or caregivers). On Saturday, February 2nd, Bob Nathanson and Puppets to Go present the classic children’s story Little Red Riding Hood. In this updated version, the Wolf and Red both learn some valuable lessons on the way to Grandma’s house. The show promises to be both exciting and educational. This highly acclaimed community event celebrates Weston’s diversity by exposing patrons to the culture, cuisine and entertainment of various countries around the world. This year’s event takes place on Sunday, March 3rd at Weston Regional Park. The Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston introduced this event four years ago. It is a twotime award winner for “Best Cultural Event” in the Best of Weston competition, taking home the title during its inaugural year and again last year. Event organizers have been working diligently to build upon that success with new and exciting activities, country booths, and sponsors for 2019. “The Weston World Fest has quickly become the area’s number one cultural event,” states Don Decker,

Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation. “The event is even more impressive when you consider that it is produced by our residents, for our residents, and with our residents coming together to make it all happen.” Patrons will be able to visit 20 country booths exhibiting cultural displays and hands-on activities, with a passport challenge just for students. Authentic ethnic food and beverages from area restaurants will be available for purchase. Throughout the day, live professional and semi-professional performers and entertainers, representing different countries and cultures, will take the stage. This year’s Weston World Fest features a theme of “Stage & Screen”, highlighting international movies, music, theater and performances. “I’m very excited about this year’s Weston World Fest,” announces Event Founder and Director Carol Lema. “We have some fascinating new country booths such as Singapore, Cuba, Malaysia, Indonesia and Krygystan, plus incredible onstage entertainment including

Chinese instrumentals, international show tunes and dances, Brazilian vocals and American jazz. And our restaurant line-up is fantastic.” Other activities include a Kids Zone with face painting and balloon twisting, a henna booth for all ages, and an Inflatable Zone for teens and adults. There will also be raffles with prizes appealing to both children and adults, including tickets for fun kids’ activities and a coveted golf package for four. “Weston World Fest is an event that offers exciting experiences for every age,” states Arts Council President Jami Nix Rahn. “It brings neighbors together in celebration of our diversity.” n Weston World Fest takes place from noon until 4pm on Sunday, March 3rd at Weston Regional Park. There is no entry fee. For more information visit the Arts Council of Greater Weston website at www.1weston.com or the Weston World Fest Facebook page.

BY RAMONA BAUTISTA rospective home sellers often wonder, when is the best time to sell. It’s a myth that if you want to sell your house, you should sit out the winter season and list it in the spring instead. The truth is, now is the perfect time to put your house on the market. Here are five reasons why you should not wait until spring: 1. Fewer homes on the market = more showings Since so many people decide to wait for the spring, there are fewer homes on the market during the winter season. However, that doesn’t mean there are not potential buyers out there. If your house is one of the few on the market, you’re likely to have a lot more interest than in the spring. In addition, when the inventory is low, picky buyers are more likely to forgo their “must-have” list and be more open-minded. 2. Corporate job relocations Corporations tend to relocate their employees during the first quarter of the year. This means that every winter, there are ready, willing and able buyers out there that MUST QUICKLY purchase a home. And because of corporation budgets, the buyers have more flexibility in negotiating, and you are more likely to sell at your asking price. 3. Faster home sale Homes sell more quickly in the winter months. No one knows exactly why that is, however, low inventory is quite likely a major part of it. 4. Higher listing price Statistics show that homes sell at a slightly higher price in winter. This is due to several less mysterious factors. One is, the selling price you arrive at with your real estate agent most likely can be more aggressive with low inventory on hand. Secondly, buyers are more motivated and will make an offer too good to refuse, because of the low inventory. 5. Finally, a fear of rising mortgage rates With mortgage rates now rising, it might cause a buyer to be more willing to purchase now rather than wait for the next rate hike. Whatever the reasons, it’s a happy discovery for many people who sell their home during the winter months. If you’re ready to move before spring, putting your home on the market during the colder seasons can create the perfect combination of factors to sell your home as quickly and easily as possible with less competition and more control of your sale!

Imagine Charter School Runs Away with Mayor’s Challenge Cup BY STACEY BOMSER

or the eighth straight year, Imagine Charter School at Weston has won the Mayor’s Challenge and walked away with the coveted Commission Cup trophy – and this year’s grand prize check for $4,000. The Mayor’s Challenge 1-Mile Family Health Walk was part of the Rotary Club of Weston’s annual Run for Tomorrow. Mayor Daniel Stermer challenged students, families and faculty from every elementary school in Weston to join him in taking the first step toward a lifetime of physical fitness. “I would like to thank every student, parent and school for their participation which was absolutely overwhelming,” states Mayor Stermer. “Community

involvement was on display here today for everyone in South Florida to take note.” Mayor Stermer says seeing Imagine Charter School win again was particularly special this year, as it was Principal Nadine Laham’s last; she retired in January. Principal Laham says winning the Mayor’s Challenge for the eighth consecutive year was thrilling. “It’s a team effort of love, caring and character which brings together our parents, students and teachers, year after year. I am truly blessed to have been the school leader of Imagine Weston.” The second-place honors and a check for $2,000 went to Sagemont Lower School. Eagle Point Elementary School won third place and a check for $1,000. Prizes were awarded to the schools with the highest participation based on a percentage of enrollment. Over 2,000 participants registered for the Mayor’s Challenge 1-mile walk, but it’s estimated that many more participated. The City of Weston started this program nine years ago to encourage parents and schools to join together in teaching children the importance of fitness and healthy eating for

improved physical and mental health. The hope is that children will learn how exercise and nutrition from an early age are essential to winning the battle of obesity in our country.

he 21st annual Rotary Club of Weston Run for Tomorrow concluded with the Health & Fitness Festival. The free fun fest provided hours of entertainment with educational health and wellness booths and plenty of hands-on activities. The Weston Rotary estimates more than 5,000 people participated in the day’s activities, which began bright and early with the 5K and Half Marathon, followed by the

Mayor’s Challenge 1-mile health walk. Afterwards, the entire community was invited to attend the Health & Fitness Festival. Rotary Run Chair Robin Lewis says this year’s event featured a record number of booths, with 65 local agencies, businesses and charities participating. Festival attendees were able to test their athletic prowess with a variety of fitness activities including a Spartan

Obstacle Course by the Weston YMCA, boxing practice by 9Round 30-Minute Kickbox Fitness, and a rowing competition by Orangetheory Fitness. There were massage therapists on hand to provide soothing relief to sore muscles. The City of Weston, Broward Sheriff’s Office, BSO Fire Rescue and the Weston CERT team provided a variety of health and safety education stations. Certificates were awarded to participants who completed all four activities: fire safety, playground safety, water safety and bicycle safety. Children delighted in the opportunity to paint a police car. There was also face painting for the kids. All ages enjoyed taking a turn at the dunk tank, with Mayor Dan Stermer and Commissioner Byron Jaffe braving the cold water for a good cause. Two mountain bikes were raffled off at the Health & Wellness Festival. Other entertainment included two live bands, a DJ, and food trucks.

BY DISTRICT CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN ebruary is world renowned for the celebration of Valentine’s Day, where loved ones share heart shaped gifts. February is also known as the month dedicated to raising awareness and prevention of heart disease. 2018 studies by the American Heart Association report heart disease to be the leading cause of death in the United States, affecting over 840,000 people each year. One in every three deaths in this country is attributed to heart disease. In addition, every 40 seconds a victim suffers from a heart attack. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease shows very little discrimination affecting both men and women almost equally, men slightly more. Most recent studies indicate this disease is not isolated to the elderly, it is happening to younger adults more and more. Mostly because the conditions that lead to heart disease, such as obesity and diabetes, are happening at younger ages. The leading risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking. Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including Diabetes, overweight and obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol use, and poor sleeping habits. What can you do to help reduce your risks? Glad you asked. Here are some tips to keep you heart smart: ▸▸ Take prescription medication. Medication that is prescribed to help maintain blood pressure or cholesterol levels should be taken daily and on a regular schedule. ▸▸ Exercise regularly. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight and also help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and stress levels. All you need is 20 minutes a day of a moderate-intense exercise to get the heart pumping. Before beginning any new exercise plan you should consult your doctor first. ▸▸ Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese can increase your risk for heart disease. A Body Mass Index (BMI) between 18.5 and 25 kg/m2 for most adults is considered normal. ▸▸ Eat a healthy diet. Eating foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fiber can help prevent high blood cholesterol. Limiting salt or sodium in your diet can also lower your blood pressure. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. ▸▸ Don’t smoke or vape. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. So, if you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, quitting will lower your risk for heart disease. Call 1-800-QUITNOW or talk with your doctor on finding the best way. Recent studies have shown that the primary ingredients in e-cigarettes or vape pens are propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. These ingredients, along with the added nicotine, are likely to expose users to a high level of toxins. ▸▸ Limit alcohol use. Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which causes high blood pressure. ▸▸ Get plenty of rest. Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night. Lack of sleep can lead to unhealthy weight gain. This is especially true for children and adolescents, who need more sleep than adults. Not getting enough sleep may affect a part of the brain that controls hunger leading to overeating. n For more information, please contact District Chief Todd Draizin at Weston Fire Station #81 at 954-

Weston Firefighters Spread Holiday Cheer BY STACEY BOMSER

S

anta Claus may use a sleigh, but this past year Weston BSO Firefighters delivered Christmas gifts in a shiny red fire truck. Just a few days before Christmas, Weston fire crews responded to a vehicle fire that had engulfed the car of a single mother of three young girls, who was in town visiting relatives. The car was completely destroyed, along with all of its contents – personal belongings, car seats, and all of the family’s Christmas gifts. The car owner, Rebecca Barnes, was distraught, especially over the loss of the car seats. The firefighters immediately stepped up, calling on the greater Weston community to help turn the family’s tragedy into Christmas joy. Harvest Drive Founder Renee Herman provided gift cards for food, along with clothing for the girls. Walgreens Director of Pharmacy and Retail Operations Pattie Sanchez also answered the call for assistance. Ana Larkin,

manager of the Walgreens on Bonaventure Boulevard, and her staff provided eight bags, customized by age, filled with toys, toiletries and goodies for Ms. Barnes and her daughters: Piper (9), Finley (7) and Ever (5). The International Association of Fire Fighters Local 4321 heeded the call as well. BSO Weston Fire Safety Educator Melanie Brocato came in on her vacation days to purchase new car seats and gifts for the children. On Christmas Eve, Weston Firefighters pulled up in their firetruck to the relatives’ home to deliver the donations to the Barnes family. The children were beyond excited while the adults were speechless and overwhelmed by the response from the Weston community. Proving that it is truly better to give than receive, Weston BSO Fire Chief Todd Draizin shared, “As happy as the kids were, the firefighters got more out of this than the kids did.”

Our facility is newly remodeled featuring brand new floors, furniture, air conditioning, and an organic garden which encourages our children to be ecoconscious. We have a full functioning gym and a media center equipped with iMac’s, Apple Smart TV, as well as iPads in the classrooms which teachers use as educational tools.

Indian Trace Park Improvement Project Nearing Completion BY STACEY BOMSER

he newly renovated Indian Trace Park is scheduled to reopen next month. The five-acre neighborhood park, which opened over twenty years ago, has been closed while undergoing a massive face-lift. The previous facilities were a little sparse, so the City is hoping the improvements will create a desire for residents to utilize the enhanced amenities. “People moved to Weston 20-plus years ago because we had new schools, new parks, new everything,” states Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation. “Today’s residents don’t expect less, which puts us in a position of constantly evaluating our parks and reinvesting in them. The time has come for Indian Trace Park to receive some desired improvements and I expect we will see the park bustling with activity when the project is complete.” The Indian Trace Park improve-

ment project includes a new playground with shade canopy and poured in place safety surfacing, renovated baseball and multipurpose fields, resurfaced basketball courts, fitness stations with shade canopy, and a Bike Fixit Repair Station. In addition, the park will get brand new restroom facilities, easier access to parking, and a lighted walkway. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 2/28/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Laurie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. he third program day of Weston University focused on the operations of Weston’s parks and recreation, landscaping, and public works departments. Before taking the class on a tour of some of the city’s parks, Director of Parks and Recreation Don Decker led students through an exercise to design their own dream park. They came up with some clever concepts: ▸▸ Generation Park featured a community garden, dog park, and

park also included a Ferris wheel on an island accessed by a bridge, a small dog park, athletic fields, beach volleyball, a community center and day care center. ▸▸ Sunset Park offered residents use of a swimming pool, sports fields and a circular garden and green space in the center of the park. Decker says he was impressed with the students’ creativity. “It is always exciting watching students use their imaginations without the restraints of budgets, politics or red tape. It reminds me that those restraints don’t necessarily have to mean our ideas are impossible.” Following the dream park design project, students spent

time with officials from the Public Works and Landscape departments where they learned about proper tree trimming, as well as the mitigation area and stormwater maintenance system, which included a tour of one of Weston’s pumping stations.

Free Digital Memory Lab Opens at Weston Branch Library BY STACEY BOMSER

T

echnology is evolving at a rapid pace. The VHS recordings you made of your child’s first steps are now obsolete. Thankfully, you can maintain those special memories thanks to the new Digital Memory Lab at the Weston Branch Library. “Most people have lost a least some digital photos or files, and it happens easily,” explains Library Curator Erin Purdy. “We all risk losing massive amounts of personal, cultural, and historical information if we don’t take control of our digital assets. Good practices can be simple, don’t take too much effort, and the result is materials that can be handed down over time.” The Digital Memory Lab is a free service offering library patrons instruction and equipment to preserve photographs, slides, video and audio tapes

for future generations. Professional-grade equipment will convert a variety of media to digital format, thereby making it accessible and usable in years to come. It is particularly important to transfer videos from VHS and VHS-C before the tapes naturally disintegrate. All physical and digital material remain the personal property of the customer. A Memory Lab Orientation class will be offered on Wednesday, February 6th from 10:30am-12pm in the library’s Computer Center. During this program, participants will learn how to use the Memory Lab’s professional-grade equipment and transfer VHS tapes, audiocassette tapes, photographs, and slides to digital formats. This orientation is required for those who want to book a session to use the Memory Lab Digitization Station equipment. Please call 954-

357-5420 to preregister for the class. Two other Memory Lab courses will be offered this month. Personal Archiving 101 – Planning for your Digital Afterlife takes place on Wednesday, February 13th and again on Wednesday, February 20th. Personal Archiving 101 - How to Organize your Family Papers and Photographs without Being Overwhelmed will be offered on Wednesday, February 27th. During this class, participants will learn archival tips for organizing and preserving your photos, slides, collectible and other important papers. All Memory Lab classes take place from 10:30am-12pm in the Computer Center. Preregistration is required; please call 954-357-5420. Broward County Library is one of seven libraries in the country to have been selected by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to become a Memory Lab Network project partner, receiving the training and funding to create a local Memory Lab for public use. The Memory Lab at the Weston Branch Library was made possible by a sub-grant from the District of Columbia Public Library Memory Lab Network and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. n For more information on the Memory Lab at the Weston Branch Library contact 954-357-5420.

The Power of Love

Gifted Evaluations

BY IVIS MATEOS his is the month we celebrate love. But have you ever taken the time to think about the various kinds of love that exist? Let’s start by thinking about the lyrics to one of The Beatles’ most famous songs: I’ll give you all I’ve got to give, If you say you love me too I may not have a lot to give I don’t care too much for money Money can’t buy me love. Although this song was talking about an Eros love, which is a romantic or sensual kind of love, it actually makes me think about my own kids and the children I have the honor of working with on a daily basis. Their love is a Storge love, which is a different kind of love because it develops naturally. It is a love that nurtures, lifts you up, and gives you a sense of protection and comfort when you are around those that give it.

Did you know that our brain actually releases a chemical called oxytocin when you feel loved and when you give it abundantly? This chemical works magic in the brain and it helps brighten up our day. There is nothing more beautiful than the Storge kind of love and which I seek intentionally in the morning hugs I get when I walk into a classroom full of kids. It’s the kind of love I feel when my children hold my hand or caress my face out of the blue. It is a tender love that expects nothing in return and no money can buy. Children especially give Storge love without asking anything from you. They actually get a kick out of seeing you enjoy the love they give you. I love February because it is the month of the year when people are more consciously thinking about the different types of love and when love is most celebrated. As a parent you have full access, VIP privilege to your child’s unconditional love. Bathe in the purity of the love. Energize with its power. And continue to enjoy it the rest of the year. t’s not every day that sports fans are cheering on the cheerleaders, but that is exactly what happened when the Weston Warriors Junior Varsity Cheer team competed at the Pop Warner National Cheer & Dance Championship. The Weston Warriors team placed 11th in the JV Level 2 division. The Weston Warriors Youth Tackle Football and Cheerleading program has been around for more than 20 years. It was a pioneer in the American Youth Football League, and in 2017 the Warriors joined the Pop Warner League. The cheerleading program is open to girls and boys, ages five to 14. In addition to cheering for the Weston Warriors football teams, the cheerleaders also cheer competitively at the local, regional and national level. “Our season starts August 1, and girls learn the proper technique for stunts, jumping, sideline cheer and soon

after start learning their competition routine,” explains Coach Carley Core, who directs the Weston Warrior Cheerleading Program along with Coach Maria Reinat. “Practices are three times a week and football games on Saturdays. There are additional practices when competition gets close.” This was the first year the Weston Warriors competed at the Pop Warner National Cheer & Dance Championship, which took place at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World. Getting to Nationals was no easy task. Coach Carley says the JV team had to place either first or second at both the local and regional competitions. “There were over 500 teams at Nationals of various levels and categories. It was a tough competition, and the girls were so excited to be at Nationals for the very first time,” shares Coach Carley. “They were so proud of themselves. Overall, they know they did great placing 11th in their level.” She credits Coach Kim Smith and Coach Kelly Schock, as well as all the cheerleaders, for their hard work, dedication and mastery for represent-

ing the Weston Warriors cheerleading program at Pop Warner Nationals. “We want to help these cheerleaders get ready for next season,” says Coach Carley. “We are looking into tumbling classes and strength training for the off season.” This is important because cheerleading is a competitive athletic sport. “These girls are athletes who train hard,” explains Coach Carley. “It takes strength and coordination to get your flier in the air and make sure you catch your flier when they are cradling down. Each girl in a stunt is valuable and has a key position. Without your bases and back sport, the flier cannot get in the air.” n To learn more about the Weston Warriors Youth Tackle Football and Cheerleading program go to www.WestonWarriorsSports.com.

LEGISLATIVE LOOK

Tax-Related Identity Theft BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK ax-related identity theft occurs when someone steals your Social Security number (SSN) to file a tax return and claim a fraudulent refund. You may be unaware that this has happened until you file your return and discover that a return already has been filed using your SSN, or the IRS may send you a letter saying they have identified a suspicious return using your SSN. Here are a few warning signs that you may be a victim of tax-related identity theft: ▸▸ More than one tax return was filed within one year using your SSN. ▸▸ You owe additional tax, refund offset or have had collection actions taken against you for a year you did not file a tax return. ▸▸ IRS records indicate you received wages or other income from an employer for whom you did not work. Uncovering Tax-Related Identity Theft The IRS uses your Social Security Number (SSN) to make sure your filing is accurate and complete, and that you get any refund you are due. Identity theft can affect how your tax return is processed. An unexpected notice or letter from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) could alert you that someone else is using your SSN. Keep in mind, the IRS doesn’t start contact with a taxpayer by sending an email, text or social media message that asks for personal or financial information. If you get an email that claims to be from the IRS, do not reply or click on any links. Instead, forward it to phishing@irs.gov. If someone uses your SSN to file for a tax refund before you do, the IRS might think you already filed and got your refund. When you file your return later, IRS records will show the first filing and refund, and you’ll get a notice or letter from the IRS saying more than one return was filed for you. If someone uses your SSN to get a job, the employer may report that person’s income to the IRS using your SSN. When you file your tax return, you won’t include those earnings. IRS records will show you failed to report all your income. The agency will send you a notice or letter saying you got wages but didn’t report them. The IRS doesn’t know those wages were reported by an employer you don’t know. Steps to Take if You Become a Victim If you are a victim of identity theft, the Federal Trade Commission recommends these steps: ▸▸ File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at identityTheft.gov. ▸▸ Contact one of the three major credit bureaus to place a “fraud alert” on your credit records: - Equifax at www.Equifax.com or 1-800-766-0008 - Experian at www.Experian.com or 1-888-397-3742 - TransUnion at www.TransUnion.com or 1-800-680-7289 ▸▸ Contact your financial institutions and close any financial or credit accounts opened without your permission or tampered with by identity thieves. Keep these tips in mind to stay safe this tax season.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Understanding the Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES hen you or a loved one are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, you may find comfort in knowing what to expect. Understanding the stages of the disease helps you and your family to plan ahead, recognize symptoms, and find support. The better you understand Alzheimer’s ahead of time, the more prepared you can feel to live with the disease. Preclinical Alzheimer’s While we usually consider there to be three stages of Alzheimer’s – mild, moderate, and severe – the disease actually begins well before any symptoms show. Alzheimer’s usually develops slowly and becomes worse over time, according to the Mayo Clinic. In the preclinical stage, you won’t see changes in yourself or your loved one, but research into this early phase could eventually help with earlier diagnosis. Mild Alzheimer’s Even though there isn’t an exact Alzheimer’s timeline, there are symptoms you can expect in certain stages. People in early-stage Alzheimer’s may have trouble recalling the right word or name, or finding an item they misplaced. We all struggle with forgetfulness at times, but even in its mild stage, Alzheimer’s goes beyond that, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. People with mild Alzheimer’s might also have difficulty planning, organizing, or getting tasks done in social or work environments. Moderate Alzheimer’s If your loved one is living with middle-stage Alzheimer’s, their symptoms will be clearer to you than they were in the early stage. In the moderate stage, symptoms go beyond forgetfulness and trouble staying organized, extending to difficulties with daily tasks and even changes in mood. You or your loved one may have a harder time remembering what day it is, your own personal history, and you may be more likely to feel upset, especially when presented with something mentally taxing.

Severe Alzheimer’s In the last stage of Alzheimer’s, your loved one will be more unaware of their surroundings, have trouble communicating, and need help with activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom. Because people living with severe Alzheimer’s need 24/7 care, families often turn to memory care communities in this stage. A memory care community can help provide peace of mind for you and your family, as they are experienced professionals who can give your loved one the support they need with heartfelt attention. Artis Senior Living of Davie is a new Memory Care Assisted Living located at 2794 South Flamingo Road in Davie. The community includes a central core, known as the “Town Center” flanked by four distinct “neighborhoods” that serve as intimate living spaces. It was designed to provide residents with the comforts of home, as well as the opportunity to engage as a member of our community. For information, call 954-990-8941, send an email to davie@artismgmt.com or visit www.artisseniorliving.com.

Children wear a soft dynamic orthotic which consists of a cap, vest, shorts, kneepads and special adapted shoes that are interconnected with elastic bands. The PediaSuit creates a supporting unit to align the body as close to normal as possible, reestablishing correct postural alignment and weight bearing which is fundamental in normalizing muscle tone, sensory and vestibular function. Everglades Third Graders Stick to Traditional Literature BY STACEY BOMSER

B

y third grade, most students are devouring chapter books. But students in Nicole Hardin’s third grade gifted class at Everglades Elementary School have been borrowing picture books after an exciting lesson on traditional literature. “Traditional literature includes fairy tales, folktales, myths, legends, tall tales and fables,” explains Mrs. Hardin. “Third graders need to be able to recount these stories from different cultures and determine the central message or lesson in the story and how it is conveyed through details in the text.” She says this genre tends to confuse students, who often think the Percy Jackson or Ever After series are traditional literature. “Students think they are reading a Greek myth or a fairy tale when reading those books. They are absolutely learning about characters that come from Greek myths and the basic elements of certain fairy tales, but I want them to explore the original stories.” So, Mrs. Hardin selected 18 books from the school library that were exciting, different and fun to read. She chose stories from all over the world and from each genre. Some of the selected books included Tikki Tikki

Tembo by Arlene Mosel, Cyclops by Leonard Everett Fisher, and Lon Po Po, A Red Riding Hood Story from China by Ed Young. Each night students took a book home as their reading homework. To make sure they were thinking while reading, making connections, predicting, analyzing and evaluating the story, students had to write two sticky notes to place within the book. Mrs. Hardin says she was impressed with the insightfulness the students expressed. For example, Andres wrote, “I think the stepmother could have been the witch in Hansel and Gretel since they both died in the story and they both were really mean. The illustrator even drew them with similar features!” After finishing his book, Siddharth wrote, “I think the moral of the story is that you should explore new places. It will make

you appreciate the world as well as your home.” Vishnu wrote a note about his perception of one of the characters. “I can’t believe Zomo is bragging about how fast he is because that is super rude. He shouldn’t be saying that he is bigger or stronger than others.” Each day the children shared their thoughts on the story and what they wrote and then switched books. “It was neat to see, after a few rounds, how students made connections with each other and with the other books,” shares Mrs. Hardin. She says they often commented on each other’s notes, writing “Yeah, I thought that too.” She believes she succeeded in her goal to have students read and interact with books in the traditional literature genre, especially after seeing students continue to check out these books long after the lesson was done.

Heart health: Important questions to ask your doctor. Your heart is like the engine in your car. It’s the main component that makes everything run. And just like your car requires maintenance to keep things running smoothly, your heart needs care on a regular basis too. “The center of the cardiovascular system is the Robert Cubeddu, MD heart, It’s responsible for your vitality,” says Robert Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of the Tomsich Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. Taking care of your heart is essential for a long life. Heart disease is the number one killer of adults in the United States. Some heart issues are genetic and others are caused by personal choices. Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist Diego Sadler, MD explains, “Not only is it important for patients to listen to their doctor, it’s also important for them to ask their physician the right questions.” Drs. Cubeddu and Sadler provide general Diego Sadler, MD answers to these important questions about heart health. However, your doctor knows you best and can provide personalized answers to help ensure that you understand how to take proper care of your heart. Will blood tests and other screenings tell me if my heart is healthy? Knowing your BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels will give you a clearer picture of your cardiovascular strengths or risks. “These numbers can be indicators for issues that can lead to cardiovascular problems,” says Dr. Sadler.

Does my family medical history put me at a greater risk for heart disease? Anyone can be at risk, but a family history of heart issues – such as heart attack and heart disease – can mean you have increased risk for developing heart problems. If this is the case, healthy behaviors may be even more important for you. Will smoking increase my chances of having heart disease? Individuals who smoke are more likely to experience heart attacks than non-smokers. “The sooner you quit the better,” advises Dr. Cubeddu. Are diet and exercise important for keeping my heart in tip-top shape? A healthy diet and exercise are some of the best tools you can use to keep your heart healthy. At least 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week, is recommended. Eat foods that are low in fat, salt and calories. Include fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, lean proteins and nuts. “Having an open dialogue with your physician and asking questions are the best ways for you to learn about what to do before cardiovascular issues arise,” says Dr. Cubeddu. ove over Fancy Nancy and Winnie-the-Pooh and make room for Teri Turkey. That’s the main character in a picture book written by first grade biliterate students at Imagine Charter School at Weston. “In first grade, our students are learning to write complete sentences using nouns, verbs and adjectives. We encourage them to write and create stories throughout the school year with lots of details,” explains Rosanna Eaton, first grade biliterate teacher. To showcase the students’ abilities in both languages, Mrs. Eaton’s English and Mrs. Gamboa’s Spanish classes collaborated to write and publish the book, Teri Turkey’s Costume Party. “The story is about Teri Turkey hosting a costume party for her friends. Her friends are getting ready for the party and they are looking forward to seeing how everyone dresses up,” shares Mrs. Eaton. “Each student brainstormed a turkey character, wrote about who their turkey is, what they are coming dressed as to the costume party, and what they will be wearing. They also wrote in Spanish how their character is disguised.” All 41 students contributed to the class book. Anna-Sophia Merchan won a Each student created their character, wrote a contest to design the cover of rough and final draft, and drew a picture of Teri Turkey’s Costume Party

their turkey for the book. The children also used their artistic abilities to make their characters to hang on the class bulletin boards. “The most rewarding part of the whole experience was the excitement of the students and their ability to complete this project,” shares Mrs. Eaton. “The students loved creating their own turkey characters. When the book arrived, I loved seeing the looks on their faces as they found their pages in the book. They were so excited!” The classes celebrated the arrival of their printed book with an ice cream party. Mrs. Eaton says the book publishing project was such a success, she’s considering doing another book before the end of the school year. “It would showcase the progress in their writing from the start of the year.”

It taught language arts, because they had to use proper grammar and spelling.” This project is just one of many ways Mrs. Ramos (Science/Math) and Ms. Wolk (English Language Arts/ Social Studies) meld STEM and language arts projects. Their gifted class is currently studying bridges. That falls under the engineering portion of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The STEM bridge activities they chose correlate with the novel, Bridge to Terabithia, the students are reading in their English Language Arts class. Mrs. Ramos says it’s important to get students interested in these subjects. “STEM gives students the freedom to create what they want at the same time using research to guide their ideas. Students gain real-world problem-solving strategies while moving through the STEM design process.”

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

Large or Small, We Top ALL!

Am I Too Old for Orthodontics? BY DR. ALON GROSMAN or many years, braces have been as strongly associated with adolescents as acne. However, this has been changing dramatically in recent time. In 2010, the American Association of Orthodontics reported that the percentage of adults being treated with orthodontics has increased to 22 % nationally. This is a 50% increase from a similar study done in the mid 1990’s. One factor which seems to be responsible for this upswing in adult orthodontic treatment is an increase in cosmetic options. The size of braces, even the metal braces, has decreased significantly. Tooth colored braces have been around for a long time, but have had the poor reputation of staining. With advancements in materials, this is no longer a concern. Clear aligners, used increasingly in recent years, have brought another option for adults hoping to hide their treatment. Another factor which seems to have affected the rate of adult orthodontics is self-perception. When I turned 25 years old, I remember hearing for the first time that “30 was the new 20.” It was very inspiring to know that as I approached 30 I was actually getting younger. Ten years later, I was lucky enough to discover that “40 is the new 30.” This general optimism in aging has brought with it a new industry of “wellness.” Magazines have been created that are dedicated to health at various stages of life. Doctors espousing the “truth” about longevity have taken over prime time television. Plastic surgeons have plastered local advertising with new technologies in turning back the effects of time. From the dental industry, we have seen whitening material become an over the counter item. In my field of orthodontics, Align Technology, the parent company of “Invisalign,” has poured millions of Wall Street dollars into marketing campaigns targeting adult patients. Should age be a factor in the decision to start orthodontic treatment? Absolutely not. In my opinion, there are both advantages as well as challenges with treatment of every age group. Treatment of the teen age population has the benefit of growth. We are able to accomplish some goals which would not be possible with adults without the use of jaw surgery. However, hygiene and motivation can become compromised very quickly. Adults, on the other hand, are usually very motivated as they have truly considered the sacrifice of time and finances before starting treatment. Still, treatment time for some adults tends to be longer. Reasons for an increased length of treatment time range from the need to open or close spaces for missing teeth, higher or lower density of bone, or a decreased level of bone support due to a history of gum disease. The most important part of any treatment, regardless of age, is the proper diagnosis of all related conditions of the mouth. This may require input from the dentist, periodontist (gum specialist), or other dental specialist. Once this is accomplished, the orthodontist can create a realistic treatment plan using the orthodontic appliance, whether it be braces or clear aligners, which can accomplish these goals. In short, I like to prescribe to my own philosophy that one is only as old as one feels. If you desire improving your smile and having teeth that fit together comfortably, then you should certainly consider orthodontic treatment.

Growing Pains In Children Or Merely Flat Feet? BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

F

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knockkneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be experienced. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue

with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot.

An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated. n Carlo A. esting for chemicals in the body is the first step toward detoxification. One of the reasons we develop disease and illness is the accumulation of toxins in our body. Even if you lived inside a bubble, it would be almost impossible to eliminate exposure, because toxins are found in our environment, inside our homes and even on the food items we consume. Did you know that the average woman walks out of her house already carrying 200-500 toxins? Toxins are found in every day products, such as household cleaners, cosmetics and even toys—and this is old news. A 2015 study concluded exposure to chemicals found in common household products could be at fault for causing early menopause in women. What’s even more alarming is that even The World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer has warned about glyphosate being a probable carcinogen for humans. And this possible carcinogen happens to be the world’s most widely produced herbicide, the primary toxic chemical in Roundup (a widely used weed killer). In 2018, a jury determined that Roundup contributed to a school groundskeeper’s cancer and awarded him over $200 million in damages. Numerous studies have linked glyphosate to chronic health conditions including autism, hypertension, stroke, acute kidney failure and many others. Because these toxins are everywhere and are literally killing us slowly, we must educate ourselves and try to minimize exposure. Our livers, kidneys, and lymphatic systems have to work extra hard to filter these toxins and even that is not enough to free ourselves from these damaging substances. There are ways to limit exposure and rid your body of unnecessary toxins. They include: ► Use glass or metal containers and bottles instead of plastic. ► Use beauty products that are phthalates-free. ► Use cleaning products made from natural ingredients. ► Consume organic produce. ► Use a high-quality water filtration system. ► Exercise frequently. Keep in mind that it is equally important to know what your levels are in order to address the problem effectively. Knowing where you stand is the first step toward detoxification. At Bellissimo Medical, we can conduct specialized testing and analyze toxicity levels. One particular test that we use is the GPL-TOX Profile, which screens for 172 different environmental pollutants and it only requires a urine sample. In addition, we can also test for glyphosate exposure and levels of exposure. The key to enjoying life is longevity and we cannot get there if our bodies are toxic. As always, it is important that you work with a qualified practitioner to ensure proper diagnosis, testing and treatment. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. Falcon Cove Afterschool Math Tutoring Program Helps Students’ Grades Soar BY STACEY BOMSER

M

ath can be a challenging subject for many students. A unique peer-tutoring program is helping Falcon Cove Middle School students improve their grades, build confidence, and make new friends. Every Tuesday afternoon, students from Cypress Bay High School, who are members of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society or the National Honor Society, come to The Nest (the Media Center at Falcon Cove) to tutor middle school students. “Our Falcon Cove students are able to receive free, one-on-one tutoring with a high school student. How cool is that for a middle schooler,” states Stella Stringer, a Falcon Cove math teacher and faculty advisor to the Afterschool Math Tutoring Program. “They not only solve math problems in a relaxed environment, but the tutee is able to ask questions about high school. It makes a subject that is challenging for them more interesting and fun.” Mrs. Stringer says another benefit of this peer tutoring program is that most of the tutors are former Falcon Cove students. “They know many of the Falcon Cove math teachers and understand how the teachers instruct their lessons and the expectations in showing how the students solved each problem.”

The Afterschool Math Tutoring Program supports all levels of middle school math, including Grade 6 and Grade 7 Math Regular, Advance, and GEM, Grade 8 Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 1 Honors. Mrs. Stringer, who has been running the tutoring program for the past seven years, says she has seen tangible results. “About 95% of the Falcon Cove students who attend the tutoring sessions are more likely to improve their homework completion and accuracy with a tutor, which leads to an overall letter grade improvement in math. The tutee participates more in class and builds better study habits, which also helps improve their grades. They realize that through hard work and dedication they can become successful in math.” The high school tutors also benefit from particidaughter. “I keep coming back each week because I pating in the Afterschool Math Tutoring Program. know that I am making a positive impact on how the In addition to earning community service hours, tutee feels about math.” they gain important leadership skills. Eagle Point Elementary Second Graders Create Native American Artifacts BY STACEY BOMSER

A

s part of the second grade Social Studies curriculum, students learn about the Native American tribes from different regions of the country. To bring this lesson to life, Eagle Point Elementary Spanish Dual Language Teacher Nayda Martinez had her students create “artifacts”

representing tools, art and instruments these tribes once used. During the Social Studies lesson, students learned about the tribes of each region, the land, weather, food, housing, clothing, art and transportation. For the Native Americans Around the U.S. project, Señora Martinez’s students became “experts” on the tribes of the Southwest and California; other classes were assigned other regions of the country. “As part of the presentation, I asked each child to create an artifact that represented tribes from their region,” she explains. “The assignment was to create the project using materials they had available, just like the Native Americans did. It could be items they already had in their house, or materials they found in their surroundings.” Señora Martinez says she was impressed with their creativity and the commitment to their artifacts. “Not only did most of them do the project themselves, but they used materials from their environment or recyclables.” For example, one student used a stick and a rock to create a “Hammer Stone” (a tool used for splitting wood or grinding nuts and grains), while another

student used a paper plate, string, beads and feathers to create a dream-catcher. “Some students created instruments to find food, such as bow and arrow or a spear, others made art such as dream-catchers or a flute, and some did clay bowls as the ones the tribes used to cook and/or serve food,” shares Señora Martinez. In addition to creating the artifact using found materials, each student had to include a label explaining what his/her artifact is and what it is used for. Even though Señora Martinez’s class is taught in Spanish, this project was completed in English so that all of the second-grade students could benefit from it. She believes her students gained a lot from this activity. “They are able to recognize that Native Americans were the first inhabitants in North America. They can compare the cultures of Native American tribes from various geographic regions of the United States. And they can now describe the impact of immigrants on the Native Americans.”

Indian Trace Fourth Graders Eat Up Science Lesson BY STACEY BOMSER

A

s part of the fourth-grade curriculum, students study physical science. During a lesson on geology (the study of rocks), students at Indian Trace Elementary School learned to make and classify their own rock specimens using Starburst candy. Fourth Grade Gifted Teacher Vivian Fuhr says the rock candy project came from STEMscopes, a new science

series Broward County Public Schools is using this year. “One of my favorite features in the series is a suggested lab or hands-on experiment to include in your instruction. What I really like most is the short video that accompanies the activity showing you exactly how to organize and execute it.” Using different colored Starburst, the children made sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. According to Mrs. Fuhr, they molded the candy together to show how rocks are formed and why they belong in a certain category. “The kids really had a blast with this activity,” she states. “When a teacher says, ‘Hey kids, let’s turn this candy into rocks!’ you really get their attention. There was a lot of mashing and squishing going on.” While the students worked independently to manipulate the candy into the rock formations, Mrs. Fuhr says they worked in groups to compare and discuss their findings. She says it is important to use hands-on lessons such as this because “Taking a favorite candy and turning it into three types of rocks is a visual they children learn in different ways. “For some children, the textbook or lecture will not soon forget,” shares Mrs. Fuhr. She credits Team Leader Katie may be all they need to grasp the Monioudis and her fellow teachconcept being taught, but for others, ers, Randi Gannon, Cindy Dubuc, hands-on activities are much more helpful. Whenever you use a hands-on Stephanie Fernandez and Frances activity, whether it be in science, math Charron, for working closely and collaborating on ideas to help enhance or any other subject, your children are going to gain from the experience. and enrich the science curriculum.

Gator Run Elementary Poetry Club Promotes Creative Expression BY STACEY BOMSER

T

wo afternoons a month, students at Gator Run Elementary School eagerly stay after school to write and recite poetry. They are all members of the JG Squared Poetry Club, which was started this year by First Grade Teacher Jordan Goldberg and Guidance Counselor Jackie Grasinger. “We started this club because poetry is a great way for students to express themselves and let their imaginations soar,” explains Ms. Goldberg. “Last year we implemented curriculum in the classroom and found that many of our students showed an interest in writing and sharing poetry.” As a guidance counselor, Ms. Grasinger appreciates the expressive outlet poetry provides. “Many students use poetry as an outlet when they are going through hard times. Students not only gain a safe space by joining this club, but they are able to work on their public speaking skills which will help them throughout life.”

The club is open to students in second through fifth grade who show an interest in poetry. Many students were recommended by their classroom teachers, who felt the child would excel and enjoy writing poetry, while other students chose to join on their own. There are currently about twenty members in the JG Squared Poetry Club. “During the meetings, our students learn about different types of poetry

Band Program is Music to Students’ Ears BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he benefits of music education are numerous. Research has proven that music education, especially at a young age, develops the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. Academically, music education also helps with memorization, coordination, discipline, and creativity, while also building selfconfidence and cooperation skills in students. Students are exposed to musical instruments during elementary school as part of the music curriculum. Come middle school, students can begin formal instruction by choosing band as an elective. Tequesta Trace Middle School Band Director Heston Curry

Cypress Bay Wind Ensemble

Sound of Thunder Marching Band

has been visiting the feeder elementary schools, providing fifth graders with the opportunity to try out several musical instruments. Members of the Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder band have also visited elementary schools to tout the importance of band as a choice of study. “It’s so important that the music making process is introduced and started on the elementary level, that way by the time the students get to us (in high school) the experience with the instrument is already there,” explains Michael Scott, Director of Instrument Music at Cypress Bay High School. “The more prepared they are by the time they get to high school

the better.” Mr. Scott encourages students to try band, noting that it forges a holistic student. “The musical development is so important for our students. We use music as a therapy and as a fun way to really pull a different side out of our students.” As a director, he encourages students to make the most of this musical experience. “The expectation for the band here at Cypress Bay is simply for the students to be the best that they can possibly be with the resources that we provide.” The band participates in several competitions including all of Broward Schools’ District Music Performance

Assessments, as well as Florida Marching Band Championship regional events and Bands of America events. Next month, the Cypress Bay Wind Ensemble will travel to Indianapolis to perform at Music For All, the National Concert Band Festival. It is one of seven high school bands invited to participate, and the only one from Florida. The Falcon Cove Middle School band has been equally successful nationally. Its Wind Ensemble spent last year’s spring break in Chicago attending the Festival of Gold, the national invitational band and orchestra festival. In addition to competitions, the Tequesta Trace Middle School Cougar Band has performed as part of the prestigious Melton Mustapha Jazz Festival and the Fort Lauderdale Airport Music Festival, as well as at community events such as Celebrate the Arts Day in Weston and at a Florida Panthers game. n To learn more about the Cypress Bay band program go to https://vimeo.com/307313078.

How to Practice Self-Love BY DR. TAMY M. FAIERMAN alentine’s Day is typically a day that we honor and recognize the people we love in our lives, but it’s also important to focus on loving yourself. Starting with Valentine’s Day, why not make this the year about loving yourself? According to author and healer Louise Hay, “It’s not selfish to love ourselves. It clears us so that we can love ourselves enough to love other people. We can really help the planet when we come from a space of great love and joy on an individual basis.” As a practicing physician, I firmly believe that loving ourselves is essential for our overall well-being, happiness and success. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the designated day for love, here are four ways to practice self-love: Nourish your body. Replenishing your body with real, whole nourishing foods, beverages, even herbal teas when needed, is a loving gesture. Show your body that it matters by providing the high-quality nutrients it needs to thrive. Even the smallest changes can make a difference. Replace your skincare products with clean skincare and create a ritual. Our skin is our largest organ and how we care for it and treat it is vital for good health, both on the inside and out. Products that are free of parabens and synthetic ingredients are often more effective and safer for our health, especially long term. Plus, in my opinion, they create the most beautiful glow. Additionally, the daily ritual of taking care of our skin is healing and good for the mind, body and soul. After 15 years of dealing with skin I have learned one thing: love it, nurture it and protect it with clean product. Create a ritual; even if it is two to three minutes, it is celebration of your health and well-being. Try Minimally Non-Invasive Skincare Treatments. Treatments such as LED Light Therapy, Ultrasonic, and Microcurrent treatments are affordable, healing to skin and non-invasive. They are designed to stimulate the skin’s natural regenerative process and bring renewal to the cellular level, unveiling a toned and youthful complexion with suppleness and radiance. Use Cosmetic Surgery, Botox and Fillers. Cosmetic surgery procedures these days are safer, more efficient and yield better recovery than in years past. Whether it is a Mommy Makeover, a breast lift or augmentation, or even the smallest tweaks with fillers, it is a nice way to center on your own goals and take care of yourself thus becoming the best version of yourself. A personalized consultation with a cosmetic surgeon is a way to talk about who you are, what you want and what you hope to achieve in regard to your overall beauty, health and wellness.

How Sleep Affects Ocular Health BY DR. JANE THERRIEN t every age we need adequate, uninterrupted sleep for optimal, wakeful functioning. Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Traditional medicine also considers appropriate sleep, among other factors, essential to maintain ocular health. A 2016 study from Japan concluded sleep quality is associated with dry eye disease (DED), and sleep disturbance seems to be an influencing factor on DED, especially dry eye symptoms. We are familiar with ocular surface disease (OSD) in patients with sleep apnea, often associated with floppy eyelid syndrome. In examination of risk factors for severe dry eye symptoms in U.S. veterans, sleep apnea was identified as a risk factor for severe dry eye symptoms. Additionally, sleep posture may be a factor in OSD. In addition to current dry eye treatments, patients who sleep on their sides or face down may see a reduction in dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) if they change their sleep pattern to the supine position. Identifying sleep disturbance Sleep disturbance can be identified and quantified using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire tool. The PSQI is a self-report questionnaire that assesses sleep quality over a one-month interval. The PSQI measures the quality and patterns of sleep in older adults by measuring seven domains. It consists of 19 items generating seven component scores, such as sleep latency (i.e., how long it takes to fall asleep), sleep duration, and sleep disturbances. A 2009 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) survey disclosed that adults who reported sleeping less than the recommended seven to nine hours per night were more likely to have difficulty performing many daily tasks. Combating sleep disorders The CDC recognizes insufficient/poor sleep as a public health problem, especially since the CDC surveillance of sleep-related behaviors has increased in recent years. Additionally, the National Academy of Medicine encouraged collaboration between the CDC and the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research to support development and expansion of surveillance of the U.S. population’s sleep patterns and associated outcomes. The National Sleep Foundation offers suggestions to enhance patients’ sleep patterns—including the promotion of regular, healthy sleep habits. This begs the question: Should ODs incorporate a sleep survey into their dry eye exams? Akin to dry eye disease, there are numerous validated global and targeted patient sleep/sleepiness/insomnia questionnaires available. Questionnaires can be selected to help identify sleep disorders in subsets of patients such as pediatric, adolescent, adult patients, or obstructive sleep apnea suspects.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Benefits of the Collaborative Process BY EVAN BARON he Collaborative Process is a non-adversarial option for individuals to resolve most family law related matters. Although the concept of collaborative law is not new and it is a prevalent practice throughout the world, many individuals are unaware that this option exists or what the benefits of partaking in this process are. Below are some characteristics of this process that individuals should consider before embarking in a family case. Convenient: Traditional litigation involves court appearances during regular work and business hours often times requiring individuals to be at the mercy of the Judge’s schedule and availability. The Collaborative Process offers individuals more control and allows them to better accommodate their families’ particular needs and preferences. Expeditious: Rather than submitting to the time-consuming aspects of traditional litigation, families take part in team meetings that create an effective environment conducive to resolving cases efficiently and usually quicker than traditional Court litigation which is often drawn out. However, should individuals desire to hit the pause button or slow down the process for whatever reason, this is an option in the collaborative process. The same is not the case in traditional litigation. Often times, once a case has been on a judge’s docket for a certain length of time, the Judge at his or her discretion may decide to demand the case move along otherwise the judge can dismiss the case for lack of activity.

Reduced Stress: The collaborative process affords families the opportunity to choose a more holistic approach to resolving their case. One that not only provides families with more control over every aspect of their case, but also affords families peace of mind and the opportunity to resolve their case in a transparent and non-adversarial setting which will benefit all individuals involved, especially minor children. Less costly: Traditional litigation involves the preparation of various pleadings and attending court hearings that do not always result in progress being made on a case. The Collaborative Process eliminates the need for a long, and at times, vexatious litigation process. This allows individuals to spend their retainer on meetings and events that result in substantial progress being made in their case and ultimately saves families money while getting them to resolve their case more efficiently. The attorneys at Evan H. Baron & Associates have gone through extensive additional training in the Collaborative Divorce Process. This training greatly improves the success rate, making us highly qualified to assist anyone interested in this option. TEE TO GREEN

Short Game Basic Tips BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL

I

n putting we all know that we want the ball to roll and not get airborne. In pitching we want the opposite. And in chipping we want either or a combination of air and ground. Here is the rule of thumb to help you accomplish both. No matter how skilled a player you may be, you seldom hit every green during a round. Even if you do, it boils down to your ability to execute the little recovery shots and/or the putts. Most amateur golfers make the short shots much too difficult. They tend to think there is something different and mysterious about them. In reality, all you need to do with these shots, including the putt, is capture a certain movement in the swing. First, if you want to roll the ball then the lower half of your body must stay completely still; no weight shift or knee or hip movements. If you are looking to get it airborne, a certain amount of lower body action is necessary. The trailing knee should follow the clubhead through impact. Remember, the knee moves to get the ball airborne and stays still to get the ball rolling. The Golf Swing Begins with A Good Set Up When we discuss “set up” we’re actually talking about three separate elements involved in addressing the ball, feet, knees and posture. Aim is simply where the club face is pointing. Alignment is the relationship of your body to the club face and target line. First we will start with our feet. Your feet should be spaced about shoulder width apart. This gives a solid base in which to move. If our feet are too close together, then we can lose our balance and fall over. If our feet are too far apart, then we can’t move to shift our weight. Next we move up to our knees. We want to bend our knees slightly to put us in an athletic position. The best way to describe it is to lock your knees by completely straightening your legs. Now just unlock them. This athletic position is similar to a defensive stance in basketball or baseball. At this point we should discuss posture. Make sure that you have your shoulders back and chest out. Make sure not to slouch. We want to look proud and confident that we know what we are doing. Finally, we move up to our hips. In our athletic position, with feet shoulder width apart and knees bent slightly, we want to bend from our waist. This will allow your arms to hang loosely in front of your body. You are now in the proper stance to hit a golf ball. No More Three Putts If you are putting well it fires you up mentally. If you miss a few shots, it’s not so bad because you made some good putts during the round. But if you’re putting poorly and you miss a couple of shots, those misses can ruin your round. Here’s a great tip to avoid those dreaded 3 putts. On the putting green, place five or six golf balls in a line from shortest to farthest from the hole. Practice hitting each ball in the hole, promoting only two putts. This works on distance control. Remember, how far back the club is taken determines how far the ball goes. n PGA Professional Dean Sklar is a member of the Quarter Century Club of the PGA of America, an elite group of members who have served the PGA with honor and pride for 25 years. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Back Care Quiz BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER ake this True or False quiz to find out how well you know proper back care. 1. It’s Sunday morning. After gardening the day before you feel stiff getting out of bed. When bending over to pick up the newspaper you feel a sharp pain in your back and can’t straighten up. The best thing to do is lie on the couch with a heat pack. FALSE. For any acute injury, meaning less than 3 days, cold should be applied, not heat. Heat engorges the injured tissue with stagnant blood, increases inflammation and prolongs recovery time. Cold, on the other hand, encourages fresh blood into the area by flushing out the stagnant blood, helps reduce inflammation and speeds healing. Cold also assists in breaking the pain-spasm cycle typical of acute back or neck strains. As a rule of thumb... when in doubt, use cold. Some points to remember: ▸▸ Always wrap the ice pack in a cloth ▸▸ Apply for 15-20 minutes, about every 1-2 hours ▸▸ Apply compression (i.e.: lie on the ice pack) ▸▸ Ice is not a cure. See your chiropractic doctor to ensure your spine and back muscles return to optimum function. ▸▸ Lastly, get off the couch! Keep upright and mobile as much as possible. 2. According to the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, the only two treatments proven safe and effective for reducing most forms of back pain are chiropractic spinal manipulation and non-prescription medication. TRUE. In 1994 this United States government agency released its comprehensive, evidence-based guideline for the management of back pain. Bed rest, natural remission (e.g.: do nothing), prescription drugs, modalities such as traction, TENS, ultrasound and massage, as well as injections, needle acupuncture and surgery were all either clearly rejected or strongly recommended against. However, reliance on non-prescription medication for controlling back pain may be detrimental to long-term health. Chiropractic doctors point out that relying on medication can mask an underlying back problem, such as deteriorating spinal function or spinal misalignment. Undiagnosed and untreated, a back problem “silenced” by medication can lead to far more serious health issues later. Over the past three decades, every major independent study of back pain treatment has concluded that spinal adjustments when performed by chiropractors are safe, effective and the treatment of choice. Chiropractic doctors are the only health professionals that specialize in spinal adjustments and perform over 90% of all manipulation administered in health care. Following a minimum of three years of university pre-requisites, chiropractic students accumulate over 1500 hours of training in diagnosis and adjusting skills during four years at chiropractic college, making chiropractors, without question, the most highly trained and skilled in the delivery of spinal adjustments.

ASK THE EXPERT

Lipo Abdominoplasty for Body Sculpting BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

L

ipoabdominoplasty is an advanced technique bringing significant change to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure involves a combination of traditional liposuction with an open skin and fat removal procedure, typically referred to as a tummy tuck. The combination of the two procedures enables the plastic surgeon to better contour and shape the abdomen and the adjacent areas more completely. Patients who have experienced increased skin laxity and excess fat deposition in the abdomen, hips, and waist can now transform their bodies into a more beautiful shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who have excess skin and fat with abdominal weakness, commonly seen after childbirth, weight loss, and with the alterations that are seen with the aging process. Lipoabdominoplasty safely combines suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction) with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal. The fat which is removed via lipoaspiration can be added to other areas of contour deficiency like the buttocks through fat grafting or transfer. This combination reshapes the entire midsection and buttock giving the individual the shapely body contour they desire. The technique should be used with caution in patients who have a history of smoking or previous abdominal surgery and should be performed only by experienced surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prerequisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic features that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improvement a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flatten the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for ‘Mommy Makeovers’ or significant weight loss patients. When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 – 3 hours. Patients should prepare to rest for a minimum of one to two weeks after their procedure. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. PET CARE

Dental Care For Your Pet BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM ere’s a statistic you may find shocking: Veterinary experts estimate that up to 80% of dogs and 70% of cats that do not receive proper dental care will show signs of dental disease by the age of three. Dental care is a very important but often overlooked aspect of your pet’s overall health and well-being. Dental disease can cause serious health problems in dogs and cats—ranging from tooth loss to systemic illness. That’s why it’s important to make sure your pet gets regular dental checkups and that you pay attention to her dental care at home, too. Why Is Dental Care So Important? Without proper dental care, many pets will, at the least, suffer from bad breath, inflamed or bleeding gums, missing, loose, or broken teeth, and all the discomfort that such problems can cause. At worst, dental problems can contribute to systemic disease and even organ damage. In addition, many dental problems, such as broken or abscessed teeth, can be extremely painful. Broken teeth are a common problem in dogs that like to chew on hard objects, and dental disease in particular is a common cause of weight loss in older cats.

When Should I Start Worrying About My Pet’s Teeth? Proper dental care should begin when your pet is a puppy or kitten. Your pet should have an annual dental examination and cleaning performed by your veterinarian, who will thoroughly evaluate your pet’s entire mouth as well as her face, head, and lymph nodes. The exam will be followed by a professional cleaning to remove plaque, stains, and tartar both above and below the gumline. Your veterinarian will also remove the bacteria that can cause gum disease and take an x-ray of your pet’s teeth to check for potential problems. In order for your veterinarian to perform a proper dental examination and cleaning and to visualize all of your pet’s teeth—even those in the back of the mouth—your pet will need to be anesthetized. Dental Care at Home In between your pet’s examinations and professional cleanings, you should follow your veterinarian’s advice regarding home dental care for your pet, including daily teeth brushing and special dental care diets and treats. From the time your pet is young, you should begin getting her gradually accustomed to having her mouth opened, her teeth touched, and her gums massaged. Ask your veterinarian for advice on the best way to brush your pet’s teeth, but generally you can start by touching one tooth a day and gradually increasing the number over a period of days, weeks, or even months. Once your pet becomes used to having

something in her mouth, you can start brushing her teeth with a special pet toothbrush. (Be sure to use pet toothpaste only. Human toothpaste can be upsetting to pets’ stomachs.) If your pet seems afraid of the toothbrush, try using a small piece of gauze wrapped around your finger to start. The Bottom Line Oral disease is one of the biggest health problems diagnosed in dogs and cats today, so it is essential for owners to provide pets with good dental care, both professionally and at home. The fact is that your furry friend will live longer and be healthier if her teeth are properly cared for at all stages of life. n Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1.
