“My Mother is so happy that 2020 is over… but not for the reason you think.”
“She can’t wait to leave that big, lonely house and get to a warm and safe place, where she’s part of a community of neighbors like her, doing all the things she loves to do. We feel great about the luxury and comfort of the new Palace at Weston Senior Living. But right now what we love most is the careful, intelligent way they have set up their programs to meet or exceed every standard for health safety. We’ve talked to their team members, we’ve seen how they are trained, and our entire family has peace of mind with Mom living there. I tell all my friends who have older parents like me… go see the Palace at Weston.

The Are It Is Northerners Time for Us to DoComing, Our Let’s Duty: Welcome Them Home! Civic Get Vaccinated
T
he Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor at the end of 1941 began a chain of events that led to one of the greatest collective acts of selflessness the world has ever seen. Men left well-paying careers to join the army, even with the Great Depression fresh in their memories. Women abandoned traditional roles in the home to work in factories by the millions. The ideals of citizenship and prioritizing the betterment of society above personal goals is, in part, why we refer to those Americans as “the greatest generation” today. People, by the millions, did their duty, regardless of the impacts on themselves. It is time for our generation to do our duty. About 2 million people have died from coronavirus infection globally. The economic impact of the pandemic is measured in trillions of dollars. One only has to go to the grocery store or to pick up a meal at a local restaurant to understand the impacts on a personal level. People have lost jobs, older people are scared and many are or have been sick. But, there is finally good news: if we all do our duty for one another, much of these horrible impacts will soon be in our memories. We must all get vaccinated. The primary benefit of the COVID vaccine is the fact that it reduces a person’s likelihood to give it to someone else. If enough of us are vaccinated, the disease will stop spreading. Even if you are young, healthy, and unlikely to suffer any symptoms at all, you can still be an unknowing, unintentional spreader of a deadly disease to someone who could become very ill. This is our Pearl Harbor moment. It is time for each of us to do our duty in support of a greater cause. Get vaccinated. The life you save may not only be yours.

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL
Anchors ‘Away’ ‘Tis the SEAson for Holiday Wishes By Beverly Perkins
C
oast Guard Veteran and local author, Mark T. Holmes, had a large group of veterans on deck to wish Active-duty Coast Guard Units a happy holiday on Christmas Eve. He recruited these empathetic mates from
Mark T. Holmes
the Facebook group, “Coast Guard Buddies” since they understand what it is like to stand a lonely watch during the holiday season. “The loneliness of being away for Christmas was a bit overwhelming. I personally know what it’s like to be a watch stander on duty on Christmas Eve, having done so at several units during the period of my enlistment in the 1970s. It can be a very lonely time and as a group we want to let these men and women on duty know that we’re thinking of them. We know what it’s like to be always ready, even during the holidays,” explained Holmes.
Courageous photo leaving San Juan. by HM2 Davidowski, courtesy of Gary Pressnel
Just last year, Holmes came up with the idea to contact Coast Guard Units including cutters and shore stations nationwide. The response and reaction were so positive that the Cooper City resident wanted it to be larger in 2020. In 2019, he only had a handful of veterans make calls to approximately 40 units, but this year almost three dozen were up for the task as he arranged for them to contact over 100 units. “While a few units were not available (underway), we did get through to most of the units.
Those ‘Coasties’ on the receiving end were incredibly grateful that we had thought of them since we know exactly how it felt to be on duty Christmas Eve because we all had been in their shoes,” added Holmes. Coast Guard Veteran Chip Clough reported, “Both watches were very thankful that we would care to call. What a great idea and count me in for next year,” and his comments were echoed by Randy Schneider who said, “I’ll be planning this for an annual event. What a great idea.”

Fox Vein & Laser Experts Varicose Veins & Beyond!
Dr. Susan Fox DO, RPVI , FSVM , DABVLM
Dr. Fox is Board Certified in Vascular Medicine and an expert in varicose vein treatment and laser procedures. She was Fellowship trained at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and was on the teaching faculty at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Fox has been featured in several news programs, articles and has lectured extensively on
varicose veins and laser procedures.
F
or years, Fox Vein and Laser Experts has been at the forefront of vein therapy and laser procedures. Around five years ago, Dr Fox expanded the practice to include many non-invasive cutting-edge procedures such as micro-needling, tattoo removal, hydrofacials, PRP, hair restoration, skin rejuvenation, peels, lasers and so much more. They have the best equipment and are industry leaders in all that they offer. Now, the practice is expanding and offering even more cutting-edge treatments. They will be one of the first practices in the USA to offer Physiq and Virtue RF. These machines by Cartessa Aesthetics provide FDA approved non-invasive treatments with little to no down time to help you look your best. Physiq is a non- invasive body treatment to rid you of those hard-to-treat areas that weight loss and diet leave untouched. This new state of the art machine uses four pads to treat multiple areas of the body, at once to obtain a leaner, more sleek physique. It is not painful yet is highly effective and has no down-time unlike the plastic surgery procedures of tummy tucks and liposuction. No anesthetic is necessary and yet it is extremely effective and affordable. Many of the body contouring machines are extremely uncomfortable and do not work well. Physiq is the first to use STEP technology (Sequential Thermal and Electrical Pulse) muscle stimulation with laser lipolysis in a sequential manner with contact cooling. The patient can control the energy and comfort level making the procedure relatively pain-free with no down time. It can treat multiple body parts at once inner thighs, buttocks abdominals, flanks to name a few. Deka is the leading laser manufacturer in Europe and they are making this for Cartessa. The Physiq will rapidly become an industry leader and is already being hailed as the newest and best thing in body contouring. The treatments are recommended every two-weeks and five sessions are suggested for optimal results. The treatments are faster and more comfortable than other body contouring machines and is fully FDA approved and safe to use. The other new machine being offered at Fox Vein and Laser Experts is the Virtue RF. This machine takes micro-needling to a whole new level. It is faster, more customizable and less painful than its predecessors. This machine uses 36 gold coated needles at one of three treatment speeds with robotic precision delivery to provide the best micro-needling radiofrequency

treatment you can find anywhere. It provides immediate results with little to no down time and the results just improve over time as our body continues to build collagen and elastin and improve your appearance. It is used to shrink pore size, help skin laxity, improve fine lines and wrinkles, build collagen and elastin, improve scars especially acne scars and help stretch marks. It can also be used with PRP or a proprietary stem cell system to help hair loss. Only the Virtue RF pairs the treatment with LED red or blue light to help with acne or signs of aging. The facial treatments can be followed by a microcurrent dual face mask system by Franz Skincare. This mask uses ion currents and patented Tissue X technology to transport the nourishing substances deeper into the dermis where they help the most. The other amazing aspect of the Virtue machine is the ability to completely turn off the radiofrequency if desired. This is very helpful when we are micro-needling for hair loss or on patients who have defibrillators or pacemakers. These new machines are FDA approved and at the forefront of new and innovative less invasive, less painful treatment options to get you looking your best for the years to come. As always, Fox Vein & Laser Experts are at the forefront of vein treatment and are recognized experts in venous care. If you are ready to treat your varicose veins, you’re likely tired of their unsightly appearance or, more importantly, want to rid yourself of them for good so that they don’t cause more health problems down the line. With Covid-19, life is not normal but people have more opportunity to take the time to treat themselves. As well, varicose vein treatments are often covered by insurance or can be funded through health spending accounts. Whichever the reason, treating your varicose veins means getting to know the different varicose vein removal procedures at Fox Vein & Laser Experts, South Florida’s best vein removal center. When you’re ready to undergo treatments for vein removal, it’s likely that you’ve already done your research. You’ve probably looked up the best vein removal treatment centers in
South Florida and asked the basics like, “Are laser vein removal treatments effective”? And, “wiil they hurt?” “For years now, I’ve come across hundreds of patients who would visit our office feeling apprehensive about their vein removal treatments,” Dr. Susan Fox, owner and founder of Fox Vein & Laser Experts says. “They don’t realize that by treating their veins, they may be opening up their world to a range of health benefits and overall improved comfort.” Providing you relief, both physically and aesthetically, from your varicose veins, has been a passion of ours for as long as we’ve been in business. We know how important feeling and looking good is to your daily routine, which is why we have a multitude of ways to treat your leg veins once and for all. “We want to ensure that no matter your age, skin type, or vascular issues, there is a way for your legs to be restored to good health,” Dr. Susan Fox says. “The reason why we have so many different varicose vein treatments is because there are many different types of veins, and we like to be specific to get you the best results. Here are some of the treatment options available at Fox Vein & Laser Experts: Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT) One of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a success rate of 98 -100 percent, endovenous laser ablation involves inserting a thin laser fiber through the affected vein. It involves no incisions and thus leaves no scars. .Small pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. During the treatment process, the blood from these veins is redirected to better and more competent veins and the insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. Sounds perfect? Wait, it gets better. These kinds of procedures can be done in less than a 30 minute window with little to no down-time afterwards.
Varithena
Ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins, foam sclerotherapy is a safe and effective vein BEFORE AFTER BEFORE AFTER removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a solution is injected directly into the affected veins. When injected as a foam rather than a liquid, the solution can target some of the larger varicose veins As Featured On Channel 10 News by irritating the vein lining for longer and Vein & Laser Experts For Decades pushing the blood out of the way, causing Winner Best Vein Practice - Weston
the walls to stick together and close shut. While you may feel a pinch at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy is not considered painful. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct the foam into the problematic veins watching everything along the way. The person has no down time, usually minimal to no pain and only needs to stay active and wear compression hose afterwards.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
A surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins, ambulatory phlebectomy is often an in-office procedure that requires local anesthetic (think lidocaine like at the dentist). The veins are teased out through the tiny holes without causing any major scarring which is a significant advancement from the extensive vein stripping procedures of the past. Most often this is done with pinholes that don’t even need to be closed with sutures and most people return to normal activities immediately afterward without much recovery time.
Spider Vein Removal
Spider veins removal is deemed cosmetic even though they may cause symptoms. The gold standard is sclerotherapy where a solution is injected into the vein with a teeny-tiny needle and the vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut closing the tiny vein over several weeks. It may take several sessions for all of the veins to go away. If a person is afraid of needles, laser is an option and we have cutaneous lasers as well, that remove tiny veins without much difficulty. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or miniscule red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh which uses microbursts of energy to close teeny veins without any down time or scarring. This procedure often seals the tiny veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions with amazing results. These are just a few of the treatment options offered at Fox Vein & Laser Experts South Florida’s Vein and Laser Experts. With many more options to choose from, we encourage you to call and set up a consultation to determine the best course of treatment for your varicose veins, skin and body today!

eace is often called a “universal human value,” and peace has been identified as a priority by Rotarians and Rotary International for more than 100 years. Today, “Promoting Peace” is one of RI’s seven areas of focus. In July 2020, Peter Kyle, Rotary International Director for Zones 33&34 (2020-2022) began sharing a vision to promote and support 65,000 Rotarians in more than 1,700+ Rotary Clubs in Zones 33&34 as connectors and conveners for peace. The signature initiative Youth & Peace in Action: Engaging 100,000 Young Community Peacebuilders (YPA) was established as a bold signature initiative to Equip, Energize, Educate and Engage Rotarians, community members, teachers, and students in peace education and peace projects. Rotary Peace Fellows Patricia Shafer of NewGen Peacebuilders and Ana Patel of the Outward Bound Center for Peacebuilding were selected as Implementing Partners based on their extensive experience in peacebuilding, peace
education, and record of service and collaboration with Rotarians. By November 2020, District Governors from 20 Districts had stepped forward as Champions and committed early funding for the “Establish” phase. A number of District Governors-Elect had begun to consider how “YPA” could be a significant part of the 2021-22 year. A Million Dollar Challenge has been set

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Providing for Minor Children
A
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
re you a parent with minor children? If you are, your days are busy and your life is full. Probably the last thing you want to imagine is the possibility that you may not always be around. Who will take care of your children if something happens to you? Have you ever thought about a will or trust? Perhaps that’s something you’d consider when you’re older. You’re young, healthy, and, of course, you plan to see your children finish college, to walk your daughter down the aisle, to grow old with your spouse or partner, and to play with your grandchildren. But we see on a daily basis that life doesn’t always go as planned. I am often reminded of one of my favorite John Lennon lyrics, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” from his song, “Beautiful Boy.” The song was written for his young son, Sean. And, in the same year the song was released, tragedy struck. Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York apartment. Life doesn’t always go as planned. As an estate planning attorney, I frequently see the sad consequences of a family facing an unexpected death, made even more difficult when minor children are involved. Does having an estate plan lessen the pain of an expected loss? Of course not. But it does take some of the burden off surviving family members: difficult decisions have already been made, priorities set, helpers designated. An important component of any parent’s estate plan is addressing issues regarding the upbringing of your children. What happens if both parents die simultaneously, or within a short duration of time? A contingency plan should identify the persons you’d like to manage your assets, as well as the guardian you’d nominate to finish raising your children. In many instances, you may purposely designate different persons to deal with your money and your children so as to maintain a system of checks and balances. You don’t want the probate court deciding who will manage your finances, or guessing whom you’d prefer to raise your children. Other issues to consider are whether you want your heirs to receive their inheritance directly, or whether you’d prefer to have the assets placed in trust. Funds from a trust can be distributed based on a number of factors that you designate such as their age, need, and/or even incentives based on behavior and education. All too often, children receive substantial assets before they are mature enough to handle them properly, with devastating results. Most importantly, give careful thought to your choice of guardian, ensuring that he or she shares the values you want instilled in your children. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
⊲ Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University
National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. “Heel Spur Syndrome” & Plantar Fasciitis By Carlo A. Messina
P
lantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. Causes can include excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time is often a contributing factor. Symptoms include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally burning, numbness, shooting, or tingling into the heel happens with or without weight-bearing. Extreme tenderness to touch the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly associated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely
swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs. Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night Splints are utilized to splint the foot at night to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on the level of pain and discomfort. Physical Therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, Shockwave therapy (EPAT) or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used. Endoscopic surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel. Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of the cases if early and aggressive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition.

or the past sixteen years, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida (GSSEF) has been hosting a council-wide community food drive. However, due to the restrictions that came along with the Coronavirus, local Girl Scouts had to get a bit creative with their efforts to make “Feeding Florida Together” still happen in the midst of a global pandemic. The program was created in 2004 by Weston Girl Scout, Erica Blonde when she organized a food drive to help fill pantries all over Broward County as part of her Silver Award project, “Feeding Broward Together”. It had such a profound impact that GSSEF adopted the project and hold it every year in an effort to fill local food pantries. Fast forward almost two decades and Girl Scout Troops from six counties continue to keep her legacy project alive. They recently distributed more than 12,490 pounds of food to thirteen different organizations across South Florida. One of these gener-
ous and passionate scouts involved in the collection was Marcela Lorza of Weston Troop 10088. The ambitious pre-teen was extremely observant of what was happening around her during the early stages of the Coronavirus outbreak. She wanted to do whatever she could to help families and those in need during this time. To spread the word, some used social media while others scheduled “porch pickups” and used funds from their troop’s treasury. Marcela and her troop managed to collect many non-perishable items and donated their collection to the Broward Outreach Center. “I wanted to participate in Feeding South Florida because I knew that due to the pandemic many have lost their jobs and needed my help. I was able to receive monetary donations from my parents, aunts, and grandpa. My mom then helped me order the
Marcela of Troop 10088 food online,” explained Marcela. “It was a different experience than years past, but it was definitely worth it.” Since 2009, this council-wide effort is responsible for the donation of more than 5 million pounds of food to local food pantries.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation
Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

Valentines Day A Day To Nurture Yourself
V
alentine’s Day is typically a day that we honor and recognize the people we love in our lives, but it’s also important to focus on loving yourself, especially after coming off of a year like 2020. If we have learned one thing from Covid-19, it is that we must take care of ourselves. We have learned first-hand how stress can affect our health and well-being. Starting with Valentine’s Day, why not make this the year about whole-heartedly caring for yourself? According to author and healer Louise Hay, “It’s not selfish to love ourselves. It clears us so that we can love ourselves enough to love other people. We can really help the planet when we come from a space of great love and joy on an individual basis.” As a practicing physician, I firmly believe that loving ourselves is essential for our overall well-being, happiness and success. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the designated day for love, here are four ways to practice self-love:

POSITIVE PARENTING
Encourage Your Children To Live Out Their Dream
Responsibly By Ivis Mateos
I
nnate creativity, curiosity and big dreams are a part of a child’s natural discovery process from the day they are born. Our duty as parents is to encourage children to begin to explore all that life has in store for them from day one. To encourage our children to live out their dreams responsibly, we must first have a good set of basic principles presented to them such as; • Give more than you take • Be kind to others • Time is more valuable than money The parent is the first source of inspiration and the ones responsible for introducing the basic ideas of principles to live by, such as those examples I listed and may be for your family culturally & morally appropriate. Dreams are waiting to be discovered,
so start discussing as a family by using innovative thinking rather than laying out a structured idea. Think outside of the box! Although your children’s dreams might sound silly or unattainable, let the children express their ideas either way. Don’t be a dream killer, remember it’s THEIR dream not yours. Show enthusiasm and utilize the time with them to inspire and encourage them to see beyond their limitations. It is also a good to find a mentor or a tutor that will help clarify and enhance their exploration and research. Visit a local library and have them read books, watch documentaries and movies about people that have achieved their dreams and had goals or life experiences in common with those your child is curious about. I leave you with this observation from Nicolas Negroponte; “The wild, the absurd, the seemingly crazy: this kind of thinking
is where new ideas come from ... The people capable of such playful thought carry forward their childish qualities and childhood dreams, applying them in areas where most of us get stuck, victims of our adult seriousness.” Have fun with your child and don’t overthink the process of dreaming a big dream, this is the essence of having a childlike joy forever.

What Is the Difference Between
Vision Screenings & Vision Examinations?
V
By Jane Therrien OD, FIAOMC, Optometric Physician
ision screening programs are intended to help identify children with eye or vision problems that threaten sight or impair their ability to develop and learn normally. However, vision screenings are a limited process and cannot be used to diagnose an eye or vision problem, but rather to indicate a potential need for further evaluation. • Many vision screenings test for visual acuity only. Even the most sophisticated vision screening tools, administered by the most highly trained screeners, miss one-third of children with eye or vision disorders, according to a study funded by the National Eye Institute. A child may be able to see letters 20 feet away but that does not tell whether his eyes are able to work together to read materials 12 inches away, or if there is an eye health problem or vision perception problem. • There may be no set standards and criteria for passing a vision screening. Results can be determined arbitrarily. • A vision screening can give a parent a false sense of security. When the report indicates that a child sees 20/20, parents often assume that no further testing is needed and fail to ever take the child for a comprehensive eye examination. • Most screening facilities lack the equipment to screen young children. Vision screening using traditional methods by non-eyecare professionals is extremely difficult for children less than 4 years of age. • Amblyopia (poor eyesight in one eye, sometimes known as “lazy eye”) is often missed if the eyes are aligned. Children have been known to peek with the better seeing eye and escape detection of amblyopia. • According to a study published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, vision screenings were not attempted on more than 60 percent of the three-year old children in pediatricians’ offices. They found that in general, the younger the child, the less likely it was that vision screening was attempted. (An attempt was defined as 10 or more seconds spent trying to get the child to cooperate with vision screening.) • Less than 50% of the children identified as needing professional eye and vision care ever receive that care, and of those who do, the average time between the screening and the examination is 18 months.
Even 20/20 Screening Results Require a More Comprehensive Eye Examination.
Comprehensive eye and vision examinations can only be conducted by an eye doctor with the specialized training needed to make a definitive diagnosis and prescribe treatment. Often, specialized equipment and procedures, which are not available as part of a vision screening program, are needed to adequately evaluate a child’s eyes and vision status. Clearly, the prevalence of vision disorders present in pre-school age children and the limitations of vision screening programs support the need for and value of early detection through a comprehensive eye and vision examination by an eye doctor.

Specialized Equipment and Procedures Are Needed to Adequately Evaluate A Child’s Eyes and Vision Status.
Essential elements of a comprehensive eye exam • The refractive state of the visual system, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism is determined. Visual acuity is measured so that the student can read, work on the computer, and see the board. • Focusing or accommodation is an important skill that is tested. The eyes must be able to focus on the object at which they are aimed and easily shift focus from one object to another. This allows the child to move attention from a book or paper to the chalkboard and back. Sustained focus affects the ability to read or write for longer periods of time. • The optometrist evaluates visual alignment and ocular motility, which means the muscles aiming at each eye converge so that both eyes are aimed at the same object, refining depth perception • Binocular fusion (eye teaming) skills are assessed. These skills are critical to coordinate and align the eyes precisely so the brain can fuse the pictures it receives from each eye into a single image to enable the child to work comfortably and efficiently for prolonged periods of time. • Eye tracking skills are tested to determine if the child can track across a page accurately and efficiently while reading, and can copy material quickly and easily from the chalkboard or another piece of paper. • Testing of color vision prior to school age is conducted since a large part of the early educational process involves the use of color identification and discrimination. • Ocular health is determined by examining the structures of the eye. • Elements of visual perception, such as depth (3-D) clues used to interpret and understand visual information, are important visual functions that are typically investigated during a comprehensive eye exam.

enator Lauren Book of Plantation and Representative Christine Hunschofsky from Parkland are spearheading an effort to rename the Southeast Coral Reef Ecosystem Conservation area after the late Representative Kristin Jacobs. Jacobs, a former member of the Florida House of Representatives and a nationally-recognized champion for protecting Florida’s environmental assets lost a battle with cancer last year. She was a former County Commissioner, two-time Mayor of Broward County, and State Representative for District 96. “Kristin not only fought to preserve Florida’s natural treasures, but she also worked hard to ensure public access to and enjoyment of those resources whenever and wherever she could,” said Senator Book, who worked with Jacobs on many legislative initiatives, including environmental issues. Jacobs was a bit of a “throwback” to a previous era. She was known for working with people with differing points of view together and for finding common ground on issues like climate

change. Her collaborative approach led to landmark initiatives, many of which have been heralded as national models. “Kristin understood both the economic and ecological benefits to this coral reef area and helped ensure its protection by having it designated as an important conservation area,” said Hunschofsky, “this is a fitting tribute to forever honor and recognize her legacy of protecting this vital Florida asset.” The Representative Hunschofsky and Senator Book are optimistic that the matching bills they introduced will pass and that the coral reef system will remain a mainstay of South Florida’s ecosystem for Floridians and visitors to enjoy for your years to come.

FEBRUARY IS HEART MONTH Learn CPR, It May Save Your Valentine
F
ebruary is Heart Month across the United States. Heart disease is on the rise across age groups and is currently the leading cause of death for both men and women in the US. Heart Month serves as a great reminder for people of all ages to learn more about the warning signs and symptoms of heart attack and stroke as well as how learning CPR can help someone suffering from cardiac arrest. Understanding your risk of developing heart disease, making positive lifestyle choices, and taking steps to reduce your chances of getting heart disease can contribute to hearthealthy living. To understand how we can best combat heart disease, it’s important to understand what it is and how it impacts our health. Heart disease is a general term that refers to several types of heart conditions. The most common conditions are heart attack and cardiac arrest. Heart attacks occur when one of the coronary arteries becomes blocked and the heart is deprived of the blood supply and oxygen it needs to survive. Cardiac arrest occurs when a person’s heart

stops pumping blood through their body and they stop breathing normally. Cardiac arrest often occurs as the result of a heart attack. Heart attacks and cardiac arrest may increase a person’s risk for stroke. Heart attacks, cardiac arrests, and strokes are life-threatening conditions; therefore, it’s important to understand the signs and symptoms of each. Often heart attacks begin with mild pain or discomfort and progress slowly over time. The most common warning signs of a heart attack are chest discomfort or pressure that lasts more than a few minutes, shortness of breath, discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach, breaking out in cold sweats, nausea, or lightheadedness. Signs of a stroke often occur suddenly and may include numbness or weakness especially on one side of the body, especially in the face, arms or legs. Sudden difficulty with vision, trouble speaking or understanding, confusion, dizziness, loss of balance, or severe headache can also indicate signs of a stroke. Most cardiac arrests occur in the home. Performing CPR immediately for a person experiencing a cardiac emergency can dramatically increase their chance

of survival by keeping blood and oxygen flowing through the body. The City of Weston and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue encourages the Weston community to participate in virtual, informational CPR classes throughout the month of February to learn the steps necessary to perform CPR. Classes are currently available online, free of charge, and recommended for people ages 8+. To register for an upcoming virtual CPR class, please visit https:// BSOFireRescuePublicEducation.as.me/ In addition to learning CPR, there are many things people can do to reduce their risk of heart disease and improve overall health. Committing to regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy diet is key to preventing heart disease. These positive lifestyle changes may reduce the risk for heart disease by as much as 80 percent. While heart disease is on the rise, it’s an opportunity for all of us to assess our risk and take the steps necessary to lead hearthealthy lives. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of heart attack or stroke, learning how to perform CPR, and calling 9-1-1 immediately during a cardiac emergency can help save a life.

ear Weston Residents, I would like to thank you for your confidence and for providing me the opportunity to serve as your State Representative for District 104! I would also like to thank our former State Representative, Richard Stark, for his service. I started my professional career as a special education teacher and served as an assistant principal in Liberty City. For the past 21 years, I have had the pleasure of advocating for our great city of Weston. In 2000, I was elected to the Weston Commission. I served on the Commission for 4 years, but, as an educator at heart, I was easily encouraged to put my education and expertise to work on the Broward County School Board and was elected in 2004. During my 16 years as an At- Large Broward School Board Member, I focused my work on the belief that true education addresses the needs of the whole child. My priorities as your State Representative include affordable, high-quality health care, environmental preservation, flood mitigation, providing excellent public education, fixing our broken unemployment system, and helping District 104 residents and businesses recover from the effects of COVID-19.

Hitting the Ball into the Wind or Hitting the Ball Downwind
hen hitting into a headwind, your shots carry shorter, fly higher and come down at a steeper landing angle due to the extra lift and drag the headwind causes. Under calm conditions, the air is moving into the ball at the same speed the ball is traveling. When there is a tailwind, the wind speed subtracts from the airflow. When there is a headwind, the wind speed adds to the airflow. The greater the speed of the headwind, the more lift and drag is produced. The higher airflow into the ball causes more lift (what makes the ball rise) and more drag (what slows the ball down) causing the ball to balloon into the air. It’s a common misconception that the ball spins more when hit into the wind. It’s actually the added lift when hit into the airflow that gives this false impression. However, more spin is the enemy when hitting into the wind as more spin creates more lift and more drag and a resultant ballooning ball flight that winds up short of the target. Instead of swinging harder into the wind, usually resulting in
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
more club head speed and more spin, use a club with less loft which will help you reduce the spin and optimize the flight of the ball into the wind. The opposite is true with a tailwind. If you hit a shot with too little spin when downwind, the ball will drop out of the sky too soon and fall short of the target. Remember, a tailwind will produce shots that carry longer, fly lower and roll more once they land due to decrease amount of lift on the ball. Your best bet downwind is to launch the ball higher so that it will fly higher, carry longer and land more softly. The relationship between the lift and drag do not behave linearly, and that is why a headwind hurts more than a tailwind helps. Now that you know how the relationship between headwinds and tailwinds affects the golf ball, here is a general tip for calculating how many yards to add or subtract on a given shot. Throw up a few pieces of grass and pay attention to how far away from you the grass lands. For a tailwind, add two
yards of extra distance to how far your shot will go for each yard that the wind blows the grass toward the target. For a headwind, subtract four yards of carry for each yard the wind blows the grass away from the target. This general rule with help you estimate which club to use when playing into a headwind or when playing downwind. Whenever I am on the course and feel a stiff wind in my face I automatically take two extra clubs. For example, from the 150 yard marker when it would be a 7 iron in distance, I would now select a 5 iron and make a nice easy smooth swing knowing that I have enough club selected and that my ball will bore through the heavy wind on target with just the right amount of distance. The same goes for when I am faced with the same distance and I have 150 yards to the green and a strong gusty wind is at my back. I take a 9 iron to compensate for the wind and the ball has a much higher trajectory, whereas the wind carries it right on target with the proper amount of distance as well.

ASK THE EXPERT
C H O O S I N G
A Plastic Surgeon
P
rospective patients often ask, “who should I go to for my cosmetic surgery procedure?” This question, if answered correctly, can make the difference between a beautiful result or a disastrous complication. All too often, in South Florida, patients will choose their cosmetic surgeon based on price. This is the biggest mistake most people make. The first question a prospective patient should be asking is, is my doctor board certified in Plastic Surgery? Many doctors are board certified but don’t always state which field of medicine they are certified in. You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic
By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with well-documented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. (AAAASF) or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that
is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced board certified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, assuming the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise, I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials.

By Evan H. Baron, Esq. t is the policy of this state to encourage the peaceful resolution of disputes and the early resolution of pending litigation through a voluntary settlement process” The above quote is from the Florida Collaborative Law Process Act. It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or your friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues, by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique nonadversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation”. There are some definite rules that must be followed and not every case is suited for the collaborative process. “As part of this nonadversarial and voluntary resolution of disputes, lawyers who engage in the collaborative law process in a family law matter, and any other lawyers in that lawyer’s firm, may not afterwards represent any party in any related proceeding except to request that a court approve the settlement reached during the collaborative law process or in specified emergency situations in accordance with family law court rules.” As stated above, if for some reason the collaborative process “breaks down” and litigation becomes the only alternative, the collaborative attorney must withdraw from representing his/her client. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. The goal of the collaborative process is for both parties and their respective attorneys to act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances, there are other “team members” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and therefore the parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” on more than one occasion. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process, each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full, and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney”, there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. As in all matters of law, experience and training are always beneficial to a client. If you or anyone you know is interested in the Collaborative Process, please give my office a call.

Business owners truly put their blood, sweat, and tears into their company. They often do far more than just the traditional activities associated e appointments availablethe in business. who will take over the ownership role of the company when you are no longer there. As a business grows, however, other roles become essential to the success of the business. Make sure you think about every position within your company that is critical for operations and have a succession plan in place so that you can avoid disruptions should that person leave the company.
Involve Your Successor
One of the biggest mistakes people make with succession plans is assuming that your successor will want the job. This is especially common with family run businesses, but can happen in any type of company. Do not assume that your child or someone you have been mentoring for years will want to take over the business. Instead, ask them if that is what they want and let them know that you want to help them grow into that role.
Keep Your Succession Plan Up to Date
Succession planning is not something that you can draft up once and then forget about. As your business changes, and as people come and go within your business, it will be important to modify the plan. A good rule of thumb is to review your succession plan with every major change that takes place with your business, or annually, whichever happens more often.
Streamline the Transition with Legal Preparation
Planning out who will take over your company is a great first step. In an ideal situation, you will be able to engage in a phased transition to the new head of your company so that there is no disruption to the business. If, however, you pass away or become incapacitated unexpectedly, the succession plan will need to be activated instantly, which can make it much more difficult. One of the biggest challenges for the new leadership will be transitioning the legal ownership and rights to the company so they can make important decisions. This is why having an attorney help draft up things like transfer of ownership, power of attorney, and other documents should be a part of your succession plan. Contact ElDeiry & ElDeiry, P.A. or call us at (954) 670-2800 to schedule a consultation and learn how we can help you with your business succession plan.

CAN DO KID
MAKING HEADLINES OF HER OWN By Beverly Perkins
T
wenty-three years ago, The Culpepper Journalism Foundation (CJF) was established to honor Dr. Alyce Culpepper after she retired from Broward County Public Schools. The purpose of CJF is to promote excellence in scholastic journalism just as the exemplary educator did in her classroom, while providing educational and financial assistance to high school underclassmen so they can attend summer journalism programs at universities. The 2020 Culpepper Journalism Foundation fellowship was awarded to High senior, Grace Schwab. The ambitious student used her stipend to attend the University of North Carolina Virtual Sports
Journalism Camp because she was the Sports Editor of the Sword and Shield newspaper and an accomplished athlete for four years on both the school soccer and lacrosse teams. Because of the pandemic, most on-campus university journalism programs were cancelled or converted to virtual institutes. Under the leadership of Timothy Crothers, a professor in the UNC School of Journalism, the online format prepared Schwab for the new school year as students in Broward County went virtual for their classes. “I think the online format of the institute worked very well, and I was still able to learn a lot as if I was on campus at UNC,”
explained Schwab. “The only downfall was that I couldn’t make as strong a connection with the other students as I would have if we were all staying on the campus for those few days.” At the Journalism Camp, using Zoom, students interviewed a variety of subjects starting with a UNC basketball player and heard how the media affects a student athlete and how to approach a player after a loss. “Overall, the camp not only helped me become a better sportswriter but also taught me skills that I can take to any type of news,” exclaimed Schwab. “One point I definitely will share is that when you’re
are interviewing anyone, keep it conversational. Remember it is their story to tell, not yours.” ⊲ Since 1998 the Culpepper Journalism Foundation has awarded more than $42,000 to eighty-five students almost two dozen different public |high schools in Broward County. REAL ESTATE
Want Top Dollar When You Sell Your Home? And–
T
he great news is that our current market is very vibrant and healthy. Covid has accelerated the South Florida real estate market for a host of reasons. Florida is open for business and travel. Restaurants are open, and we have a robust hospital system. NYC government policies are turning northeast buyers our way. Pent up demand and the arrival of the vaccine will usher in Europe and Latin America buyers next. Single-family homes are being gobbled up which is running our inventory levels so low, that prices are going up. Our market tailwind is strong, so get ready for a very busy year as we start a new inning and new cycle for 2021 However, it is a tricky market: You cannot just rely on your Zestimate or the neighborhood gossip to price your home. Check the facts Talk to a professional. Although the current market is on fire, using a licensed Realtor can guide you in the focus areas of selling in the current market. Our advice is to follow the 3 P’s to get your home ready for sale.
PREPARATION, PRESENTATION, AND PRICE (throw in PATIENCE FOR COVID) AREAS TO FOCUS ON:
HOW TO GET IT! By Rose Sklar
PREPARATION Walk your home as a buyer. Address any known issues prior to inspection if possible. These most likely will come up on the inspection later and usually shows up at an escalated price by the inspection company. Take care of it in advance, and avoid a headache later. Remove any oversized furniture and make the rooms look as big as possible. CLEAN your home. Put in some elbow grease and clean everything. Baseboards, replace old dated light fixtures and fans. A fresh coat of paint is the best money spent. Paint your front door, change the hardware. Spruce up your landscaping, mulch, de-clutter all areas. If something is dark in the house, like a highlighted wall, Paint it. Neutral is best. Clean up pet areas. If possible, make it look and smell like there is no pet.
PRESENTATION A well-branded marketing strategy with professional photography and videography coupled with a strong social media presence will drive the buyers and realtors to your property. Once listed: Please allow realtors to show your home. Too many restrictions to show can turn off the buyers and the realtors and they may take you off of their list. Install a secure lockbox if possible, so so as not to
miss any showings. And we strongly suggest you leave the home and take your children and your pets too, if possible. The buyers feel most comfortable without the seller’s home.
PRICE When pricing your home, we encourage you to price your home in the striking zone. Remember, not all comparables are created equal. If you are basing the value of a home on your street with impact glass and a new roof, you will need to make modifications to your pricing. Many sellers choose to leave wiggle room. It is far more powerful to price right from the start, and if the property is worth more, it will be evident with the buyers swarming the property. These steps combined, especially in today’s face-paced market can bring you top dollar, in less time. Possible multiple offers can often get the buyers to remove contingencies in order to WIN the house they desire. Keep in mind, there are always loopholes in everything and areas of concern. If your home is priced right and show ready, get ready for possible multiple offers. But remember, not all offers are created equal. If financing is involved there is always an appraisal. This can derail. the entire transaction. A seller needs to consider the following items when choosing the best choice.
QUALITY OF THE BUYER Is the buyer approved or pre-qualified and by what institution? Home much earnest money are they putting down? How long are the dates for mortgage and inspections? So, know that the real estate market news is impressive, let us know if you are ready to sell. Wishing you all a Healthy and Happy New Year.

ANIMAL HEALTH
Gum Disease in Dogs By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
M
ore than 85% of dogs over 4 years of age have periodontal disease. • Periodontal disease is a progressive inflammation of the supporting structures around the teeth. • Signs of periodontal disease include bad breath, redness or bleeding along the gum line, difficulty chewing, drooling, and loose or missing teeth. • Periodontal disease is diagnosed by examining the teeth and supporting structures while the pet is under anesthesia. • Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) can be reversed with a thorough dental cleaning and polishing. • Loss of tooth attachment, or bone loss, cannot be reversed. • Treatment of periodontal disease may include antibiotics and other dental procedures, including tooth extraction. • Regular, at-home dental care, with periodic veterinary dental cleanings, is the best way to prevent periodontal disease and keep your dog’s mouth healthy.
What Causes Periodontal Disease? Periodontal disease starts when bacteria form plaque on the teeth. Within days, minerals in the saliva bond with plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria work their way under the gums and cause gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Once under the gums, bacteria destroy the supporting tissue around the tooth, leading to tooth loss. Inflammation of the bone and tooth support structures is referred to as periodontitis. The combination of gingivitis and periodontitis is known as periodontal disease. Bacteria associated with dental disease can travel in the bloodstream to infect the heart, kidneys, and liver.
What Are the Signs of Periodontal Disease? The signs of periodontal disease include: • Bad breath • Redness or bleeding along the gum line • Drooling, which may be tinged with blood • Difficulty chewing • Pawing at the mouth 74 / Our City Weston / February 2021
• Loose or missing teeth • Facial swelling, especially under the eyes • Nasal discharge • Gum recession
How Is Periodontal Disease Diagnosed? Your veterinarian can see signs of gingivitis and tartar buildup by examining your dog’s mouth. However, since most periodontal disease occurs beneath the gum line, the only way to truly assess your dog’s mouth is to perform an examination while your pet is under anesthesia. Your veterinarian can use a dental probe to measure any loss of attachment around each tooth and take dental radiographs (x-rays) to assess for bone loss, abscesses, and other problems.
How Is Periodontal Disease Treated? Treatment depends on the severity of the disease. If your dog has mild periodontal disease, consisting of gingivitis without any bone loss, a thorough dental cleaning that includes the area beneath the gums, followed by dental polishing, can help reverse the problem. Your veterinarian may
also recommend a dental sealant that helps prevent tartar from accumulating on teeth. If there has been a loss of the supporting structures around the teeth, however, this cannot be reversed. Your veterinarian may need to apply antibiotics beneath the gums and perform dental procedures, which may include tooth extraction. Ask your veterinarian which dental diets or treats are best for your pet. After a dental cleaning, your veterinarian may also recommend a plaque prevention gel that adheres to the teeth surfaces to inhibit tartar. Less Invasive Option for Valve Disease Treatment Offers Benefit with Fewer Risks Aortic valve stenosis is one of the most common and serious conditions affecting the heart’s valves. It is a narrowing of the aortic valve opening, which is the passage for oxygen-rich blood to leave the heart and go out into the body. When the valve opening is narrowed, the flow of this blood is blocked or reduced.
A multitude of studies have shown TAVR to be a safe and effective alternative to traditional valve replacement, offering patients minimal risk and discomfort, a shorter hospital stay (usually only one or two days vs. five to seven days with the open procedure) and a prompt recovery. Robert J. Cubeddu, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida
This condition is most common in people 65 or older, severely affecting nearly 500,000 people in the United States each year. It can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, congestive heart failure and, ultimately, death if left untreated. A revolutionary approach to treatment Replacing the diseased valve is the standard treatment for most patients with aortic stenosis. Until recently, however, the replacement had to be done through a surgical procedure in which the patient’s chest was opened in order to access the heart.
In recent years, the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure has revolutionized treatment for aortic stenosis. It is minimally invasive, allowing the surgeon to replace the valve through a zleJunction.com catheter placed in the femoral artery, which runs up the thigh, through the abdomen and to the heart.
“Aortic stenosis is a condition that offers a malignant course. As with open heart surgery, this procedure cures the condition,” says Robert J. Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine and Section Head for Structural Heart Disease at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Tomsich Heart and Vascular Center in Weston. “Many centers offer TAVR, but our team has tremendous expertise and experience in this type of treatment.” Specialists at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Heart and Vascular Center have more than 10 years of experience with TAVR procedures, and the center performs among the highest volume of implants in the state of Florida. Their experience in TAVR and their expertise in structural heart disease translate to the best possible outcome for patients. To make an appointment with Dr. Cubeddu or another cardiovascular medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, please call 877.463.2010 or schedule online at ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Heart.
