ebruary 14, 2018, is a date that will forever be etched in all our minds, just like 9-11. It is virtually impossible to come across a person in the community who wasn’t personally impacted by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Seventeen innocent people – 14 students along with three faculty members – lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. Fifteen additional people were wounded. It is hard for anyone to reconcile what happened with any sense of normalcy or justice. There are many questions still unanswered: How could someone become filled with such hate and rage? Why do we allow teenagers to easily purchase assault weapons? How can we keep our children safe? What keeps us going, however, is what we’ve heard from the friends and family of the victims: we, as a community, are better off having known them. They were coaches who rushed to the aid of defenseless students; seniors with aspirations for higher education; freshman just beginning to discover who they are; athletes; band members; and, most importantly, they were fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and friends. The Florida native (he was from Gainesville) sold over 80 million records and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame,” shares Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation. “The City of Weston is excited to welcome The Petty Hearts who will remind us just how special Petty’s music was.” The Petty Hearts is a nationally touring Tom Petty tribute band celebrating the life and musical legacy of Tom Petty’s 40-year career in rock and roll. Known for their authen-
tic renditions of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ extensive music catalog, The Petty Hearts won first place in the Battle of the Tribute Bands at the 2018 South Florida Fair. Symphony of the Americas to Perform Free Outdoor Concert BY STACEY BOMSER

eston Town Center will transform into an open-air concert hall for the Symphony of the Americas on Sunday, March 11th. The City of Weston and Weston Philharmonic Society are pleased to present this free, outdoor pops concert. This year’s “music under the stars” program will feature scores from popular Broadway musicals and blockbuster movies, as well as an homage to composer John Photos courtesy City of Weston. Williams. All music is performed by the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese. This concert provides a unique opportunity to introduce the community to the powerful sounds of a world-class symphony orchestra. The outdoor venue is especially nice for families with young children who may not be ready for the traditional theater experience. “Throughout the year, the Weston Philharmonic Society’s In-School Music Program bring recitals by individual instruments to our school children. It is wonderful that they can now hear how a full orchestra sounds,” states Andrea Burghardt, Co-President of the Weston Philharmonic Society (WPS). It is a treat for the entire family.” This year’s pops concert will feature a selection of Broadway showstoppers, which may include The Music Man, The Producers, and other hit musicals. The playlist will also feature a tribute to composer John Williams whose credits include movie scores from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws and Jurassic Park. Another treat will be La Bikina, a selection of familiar pop songs from Latin America. And, what pops concert would be complete without a performance of the beloved Stars and Stripes Forever. The pops concert is one of several Weston Philharmonic Society programs supported by the City of Weston. “Our organization is thrilled by the return of this worldclass orchestra that, through the generosity of our City, is presented free to the community,” notes WPS Co-President Lou Marett. Egg Hunts Offer EGGstraordinary Good Time For All BY STACEY BOMSER

It has become a time-honored tradition in this community, with thousands of children taking part each spring in the fun-filled scramble to collect candy-filled eggs. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, March 31st at 10am sharp at Weston Regional Park, baseball fields one through four. City leaders urge families to arrive at the park no later than 9:15am to allow ample time to park and find the age appropriate field. Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer says the Royal Egg Hunt is a beloved and anticipated annual event attended by literally thousands of families. “With that in mind, I urge parents to plan to arrive early for a funfilled morning. Avoid a ‘scramble’ by being on time and ensure a ‘sunny side up’ smile on your child’s face.” Weston’s Royal Egg Hunt is free and open to children, ages ten and under. There are separate egg hunts for different age groups; parents are permitted on
the field only with the five and under age group. Children should bring their own baskets or bags to collect some of the 30,000 candy-filled eggs. After the egg hunts, children can take pictures with the Royal Bunny and enjoy bounce houses until noon. The Chalk Walk allowed even the smallest artists to leave their mark on the streets of Weston Town Center. Of course, the center of attraction was the 28-foot Graffiti Wall, where everyone joined together to produce a giant abstract work of art.

Fun and Flurries at Weston Winter Safety Expo BY STACEY BOMSER
T
equesta Trace Park was transformed into a winter wonderland for the sixth annual Weston Winter Safety Expo. The event, which was presented by the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, was designed to educate the community on all of the resources available to keep residents safe.
BSO was out in full force, showcasing its impressive fleet. Winter Safety Expo guests had the opportunity to check out a BSO helicopter, motorcycle, airboat and SWAT truck, see the robots used by the Bomb Squad, climb aboard a U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter, try on some of the equipment used by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Department of Homeland Security, meet members of the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and visit a U.S. Postal Inspector mobile command center truck. There were also informational booths and educational displays hosted by the Weston Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), YMCA, and BSO Fire Cadets. The evening featured plenty of entertainment for all ages. There were children’s activities including games, bounce houses and inflatable slides. But the highlight of the night was the sky full of glistening snowflakes. The evening’s chilly weather made the “snow” flurries that much more enjoyable and realistic.
Concerned Citizens Learn How to Help Stop the Opioid Epidemic BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he opioid epidemic has been declared a national crisis. It is affecting communities across the country, including Weston. That’s why the Weston Branch of the American Association of University Women organized the Stop the Opioid Epidemic program to educate the community on this issue and what can be done to stop it. “Many people are unaware that the opioid epidemic takes away so many lives, young and old, rich and poor, and all races,” explains AAUW Weston Founder and President Kamala Anandam. “AAUW Weston decided to organize a public meeting on this topic to raise the awareness of residents of Weston and neighboring cities.” One of the reasons opioid abuse has reached epidemic proportions is because it is so easy to become addicted to pain management medications such as Vicodin, Percocet, Dilaudid, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, OxyContin, Morphine and Heroin. “Because opioids are addictive and addiction requires larger 26 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM
and larger doses with time to be effective, it can lead to overdose resulting in death,” explains Anandam. “That is why it is vitally important for the community to understand the severity of this issue.” According to Don Maines, a research specialist on this subject for the Broward Sheriff’s Office, nationally there were more than 64,000 deaths in 2016 due to opioid overdose, including a small number of recorded deaths right here in Weston. That’s why AAUW Weston, along with the Weston Y and Broward Sheriff’s Office, presented the informational program. It included speakers from law enforcement, government, and the medical professional, along with parents who lost their son. BSO’s Don Maines explained how opioid abuse typically begins with prescriptions to manage pain and ends in illegal drug use when the prescriptions are no longer available. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Broward County Commissioner Nan Rich both called on the audience to urge legislators to allocate funding to fight this
epidemic, with Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz pointing out that for the first time the life span in the United States has dropped mostly due to the opioid epidemic. Dr. Vanya Fernandez shared that there are alternative medical treatments available to manage pain and opioids should be prescribed only as a last resort and under careful supervision. Dr. Sherwin Mendell spoke about mind over body techniques to overcome addiction. Finally, Dwight and Debi Melgaard, “Warrior Parents” as they call themselves, shared their first-hand experience with their son. Their main message was “Love the person, hate the addiction.” That’s a point Anandam hopes everyone took away from this presentation. “Addiction is a disease, not a moral failure. No stigma should be attached to it. All of us should lobby our elected legislators at the national and state levels to provide adequate funding to prevent and treat this disease.”

Mitzvah Day Promotes Neighbors Helping Neighbors BY STACEY BOMSER
H
undreds of people, young and old, participated in Temple Dor Dorim’s 20th annual Mitzvah Day. The milestone marked two decades of Weston residents working together to make a difference in our community. More than 25 community service projects were completed. “Mitzvah Day is the one day a year that we get together as a group to give back,” states Mitzvah Day Chair Lisa Lerner. “It teaches how fun and easy community service can be and, of course, how rewarding and meaningful it is. It was a great feel good day for all!” Lerner says one of the goals of Mitzvah Day is to introduce children at young age to the power of helping others who may be less fortunate than ourselves. The temple’s religious school classes participated with preschool students creating more than 100 cards for sick children in the hospital. Some community service projects allowed participants to express their creativity while supporting those in need. Fifty pillowcases were decorated for Camp Fiesta, 20 capes were made for children in shelters, 50 blankets were made to benefit Project Linus, and 48 happy face wall art plates were deco-

rated for residents at a senior center. Other projects involved more physical participation: a car wash raised over $250 for the Dan Marino Foundation for Autism; Yoga for a Cause raised $120 to benefit a synagogue that Temple Dor Dorim adopted in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria; bagged lunches were made for the homeless; and more than 300 dog biscuits were baked and donated to a local animal shelter. Those who were not able to take part in the Mitzvah Day activities were still able to contribute by donating various items to help worthy charities. Four boxes of canned goods were collected for The Harvest Drive, 20 care packages were assembled for members of the military, 50 pairs of shoes were collected for In
Jacob’s Shoes, six boxes of clothes and accessories were collected for Dress for Success, and the Abandoned Pet Rescue collected four boxes of supplies. Looking back on the day’s success, Lerner says Mitzvah Day is always one of the most popular events of the year. “Together we put the ‘community’ in community service.”

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives BY FIRE CHIEF BRUCE ANGIER
B
y now it should be common knowledge that smoke detectors save lives. They are an important part of your overall home’s safety, even more so today. Fire research has demonstrated that with today’s modern furnishings, fire can spread much more rapidly than in the past when natural materials were common. Because of manufacturers’ use of these modern materials in your furnishings, the amount of time you have to escape from a fire has been significantly reduced. You should have a sufficient number of properly located smoke alarms in your home to maximize your family’s escape time. You should have a smoke detector inside each sleeping room and outside of each sleeping area on every level of the home. On levels without bedrooms, install smoke detectors in the living room, den, and/or family room. Install them near the stairway to the upper levels. Smoke rises, so mount your smoke detectors high on the walls or ceilings. For the pitched or cathedral ceilings common in many Weston homes, install smoke detectors within three feet of the peak, but not in the apex of the peak. Ideally, your smoke detectors should also be linked so that when one is activated, they all activate warning everyone in the home. You can accomplish interconnection with hard wires or using wireless technology. Many older homes in Weston may not meet these standards for the number and locations of smoke detectors. Homeowners need to recognize that their detection needs have changed over time. It is well worth the investment to upgrade your home’s smoke detectors to meet current recommendations. Simply having the proper amount of smoke detectors is not enough. Your smoke detectors must be maintained to ensure proper operation in the event of a fire. According to the National Fire Protection Administration (NFPA), smoke alarms sounded in only about half of the home fires reported between 2009 and 2013. Three out of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms. In 21% of all home fire deaths, smoke detectors were present but did not sound. Always maintain your home’s smoke detectors according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Here are some other helpful tips to ensure your smoke detectors will work always properly: ▸▸ Only choose smoke detectors that are recognized by an independent testing laboratory, like UL, and keep the manufacturer’s instructions handy. ▸▸ Test the smoke alarms in your home monthly using the test button. ▸▸ Smoke detectors with non-replaceable ten-year batteries are designed to remain effective for up to ten years. If the alarm chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace the entire smoke detector right away. ▸▸ Smoke detectors with any other type of battery need a new battery at least once a year. If that alarm chirps, warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away. ▸▸ When replacing a battery, follow the manufacturer’s list of batteries on the back of the alarm or the manufacturer’s instructions. Manufacturer’s instructions are specific to the batteries (brand and model) that must be used. The detector may not work properly if a different battery is used. ▸▸ Never paint smoke detectors. Paint, stickers, or other decorations could keep the alarm from working properly. Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie

n July 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Cleveland Clinic Florida Residency Program Recognized BY STACEY BOMSER
O
ne of the reasons Cleveland Clinic Florida was named the highest ranked hospital in Broward County by U.S. News & World Report is because the academic medical center integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) just designated Cleveland Clinic Florida as a Statutory Teaching Hospital. This designation is granted to all hospitals with at least 100 or more full-time resident physicians in seven or more graduate medical education programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Council on Postdoctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association. Cleveland Clinic Florida currently has 114 residents and fellows enrolled in eleven ACGME accredited programs. These programs include cardiology, colorectal surgery, gastroenterology, geriatrics, internal medicine, nephrology, neurology, plastic surgery, pulmonary disease, general surgery and anesthesiology. “We are proud of achieving this designation which speaks to the breadth, depth and quality of our graduate medical education programs,” said Eric Weiss, MD, Chief Academic Officer and Board Certified Colorectal Surgeon. “Cleveland Clinic Florida is at the forefront of training the next generation of physicians and is committed to improving the quality of healthcare for patients in South Florida, the U.S. and worldwide.” Studies show that patients treated at academic medical centers have better

A
s a Weston resident and local business leader, Aaron Lee appreciates his good fortune. The current president of Entrepreneurs’ Organization – South Florida (EO-SOFLO) is committed to giving back, both in our community and around the world. As part of this role, Lee attended the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he and other Entrepreneurs’ Organization delegates joined the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals initiative designed to wipe out global poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change by 2030. “Participating in the 72nd General Assembly was an inspiring opportunity to realize the opportunity to connect my experience and talents as an entrepreneur with a mission that can truly have a lasting global impact,” states Lee. “One of the great benefits of being a member leader in EO is having the opportunity to share in unique and meaningful experiences with people who want to change the world. Being together with more than 30 EO leaders, engaged in discussions about how we can tap into the potential of more than 12,000 global entrepreneurs whose nature it is to see problems as opportunities, was truly remarkable.” Lee and EO-SOFLO are already making an impact by helping rebuild the Florida Keys following Hurricane Irma. “Just prior to attending the General Assembly meeting and the launch of EO’s partnership with the U.N., our commu-
nity was struck by Hurricane Irma. That event was very much on my mind during the trip. I recognized that once the national news media moved on to the next big story, that the Keys would continue to be dealing with the recovery process for a long time to come.” Lee says he challenged EO-SOFLO members to assist in the recovery. “In early December, I led a mission of eight members to the lower Keys and Key West to engage with civic and community leaders to identify ways that we could be part of the long-term solution,” he notes. “Since that time, we have continued to coordinate with KeyStrong.org, FEMA and Monroe County leadership to use our resources and ideas to assist with the ongoing recovery efforts.” Although it’s been more than six months since that storm struck, Lee says there is still much work to do in the Keys and EO-SOFLO remains committed to bringing innovation and its entrepreneurial spirit to the challenge. Entrepreneurs’ Organization made that same commitment to helping the United Nations. Lee and the other delegates signed an official charter pledging to support the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals. “These are a set of 17 goals designed to transform the world by 2030,” explains Lee. “What the United Nations has recognized is that in order to achieve this ambitious agenda, they must create partnerships with organizations and entities committed to the same outcome with the resources and passion to deliver results.”

Children’s Author Offers Help to Young Hurricane Victims BY STACEY BOMSER
A
lthough Weston was spared the brunt of Hurricane Irma’s fury, a local children’s author is doing her part to help young hurricane victims still recovering. Jayne Bonilla has reprinted If Hurricanes Were Candy Canes, which provides emotional support to children and families who survived a devastating natural disaster. Bonilla, who is a survivor of Hurricane Andrew, describes it as a story of hope, comfort and encouragement that has made a positive impact on communities throughout the United States and Caribbean for the past 25 years. “If Hurricanes Were Candy Canes is about a family that experiences a hurricane and, in the aftermath of the physical rebuilding process, is empowered to create the dialogue essential to emotional rebuilding,” explains
Bonilla. “Children are at the heart of this story as they remind us of their courage and teach us the many silver linings that exist.” Bonilla says following this past season’s Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, there was a dire need for the emotional support If Hurricanes Were Candy Canes has always provided. With only a handful of copies available and an overwhelming demand from parents, teachers and social workers, she reprinted the book to reach families in Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico. A portion of the proceeds will benefit H.E.A.R.T. (Homeless Education Assistance Resource Team). In addition, through H.E.A.R.T., Bonilla has donated 200 copies of the book to Broward Public Schools students whose families were forced to relocate here from the Keys, Puerto Rico or Texas after the hurricanes left them homeless.
In addition to helping hurricane victims, Bonilla is also committed to supporting students enrolled in our local schools. “For more than 25 years, I have had the pleasure of participating in countless author visits and book fairs. I love reading my stories to children. Their interaction, Author Jayne Bonilla honesty and personal connection to my writing is inspiring.” Bonilla also created and presents Stand Up for Your Writes, an original program to empower children to express themselves and write purposefully. Still Have Unused Gift Cards? BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK
D
o you still have unused gift cards that you received during this past holiday season? Gift cards are increasingly popular. The market research firm Packaged Facts reported that American consumers spent $46 billion on gift cards in 2017. Retail gift cards are sold by retailers and restaurants and can be used only with those merchants. Retail gift cards issued in Florida do not have an expiration date, expiration period or any type of post-sale charge or fee, including: service charges, dormancy fees, account maintenance fees or cash out fees. However, there are some exceptions: ▸▸ A gift certificate can have an expiration date of no less than three years if it is provided as a charitable contribution. ▸▸ A gift certificate can have an expiration date of no less than one year if it is provided as part of an employee incentive program or part of a loyalty or promotional program when the recipient doesn’t pay for the certificate. Bank gift cards carry the logo of a payment card network, such as American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa, and can be used wherever the brand is accepted. The restrictions on retail gift cards issued in Florida do not apply to cards issued by financial institutions. The Federal Trade Commission recommends the following tips for buying and using gift cards: ▸▸ Buy from sources you know and trust. Avoid buying gift cards from online auction sites, because the cards may be counterfeit or may have been obtained fraudulently. ▸▸ Inspect the card before you buy it. Verify that none of the protective stickers have been removed, and make sure that the codes on the back of the card haven’t been scratched off to reveal a PIN number. ▸▸ Both retail gift cards and bank gift cards are required to print key terms and conditions on the card itself, including: fee information, expiration information, a toll-free number for additional information and a website, if available. ▸▸ Give the recipient your original receipt so they can verify the card’s purchase in case it is lost or stolen. ▸▸ If your card is lost or stolen, report it to the issuer immediately. You may need to show proof of purchase and the ID number on the card. Most issuers have toll-free telephone numbers you can call to report a lost or stolen card.
While many stores typically don’t allow returns, some may let you return a third-party gift card within a short period of time after purchase so long as you have the purchase receipt and haven’t used the card. In addition, there are several websites that allow the exchange of gift cards for cash and most all of those sites charge a fee for the exchange. New Career and Professional Education Program Prepares Falcon Cove Students for the Future

switches to a block schedule format. Upon completion of the program, students will earn Microsoft certification in PowerPoint, Word and Excel, ultimately receiving the Microsoft Office Specialist certification. The MOS certification is recognized globally as the
premier credential to validate knowledge, skills and abilities relating to Microsoft Office applications. According to Mrs. Feller, as part of the CAPE curriculum, students learn the fundamentals of the Microsoft Office programs as well as complete lessons emphasizing academic and life learning skills. “Authentic projects that invoke creativity and social awareness are combined with learning the software application features. Examples of this semester’s projects included using PowerPoint tools to create memes, collecting data and using charts and tables to present results, a CEO presentation, and a cooperative research presentation on rebuilding Key West after Hurricane Irma.” In addition to the CAPE program, Falcon Cove also offers students an enrichment in computer coding. “The computer science enrichment allows students to realize that everyone can learn to code,” says Mrs. Feller. “The enrichments provide these middle schoolers a fun, positive exposure to programming.”

Imagine Weston Fourth Graders are Programmed for Success BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents in Lorna Ince’s fourth grade gifted and high achiever class at Imagine Charter School at Weston were encouraged to imagine the possibilities as they explored the wonders of computer coding. With the help of volunteers from Ultimate Software, the class completed Star Wars-themed activities for Hour of Code. Hour of Code is a global initiative by Code.org to introduce students in more than 180 countries to computer science and computer programming. The event takes place during Computer Science Education Week.
Mrs. Ince says her class has participated in Hour of Code for the past five years. “The kids have a lot of fun, plus they feel a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the session.” “It was a magical experience” and “It was lots of fun and I was amazed I could code” were just two of the comments from students after successfully completing the Hour of Code activities. “Students had to make Star Wars characters move using block commands they could drop and drag,” explains Mrs. Ince. “The first task was simply to get BB8 to move and collect scraps. They then had to complete more complex tasks that needed repeat commands. By the end, the students had to design their own game. They could choose characters, backgrounds, droids and animals.” Mrs. Ince has a set of twins in her class whose mother works for Ultimate Software and she arranged to have four employees participate in Hour of Code at the school. The Weston-based company is com-
mitted to STEM education. “Through the hands-on Hour of Code volunteer program, Ultimate Software’s experienced engineers have the chance to give back to our community and teach local students fundamental coding concepts that set the foundation for successful careers in tech,” says Adam Rogers, Chief Technology Officer for Ultimate Software. Mrs. Ince also recognizes the importance of introducing her young students to computer science. “In today’s world, computer science is becoming a fundamental skill requirement. Programs and initiatives such as Hour of Code provide my students with a platform that is both fun and engaging, yet empowers them to create or complete projects at their own pace.” In addition to Hour of Code, Imagine Weston also utilizes Tynker, a complete learning system that teaches students to code. “Kids begin experimenting with visual blocks, then progress to JavaScript and Python as they design games, build apps, and make incredible projects,” shares Mrs. Ince.
Makerspace Allows Gator Run Students to Imagine & Build BY STACEY BOMSER
T
here’s more to learning than memorizing facts and answering questions. At Gator Run Elementary School, students are encouraged to use their imaginations to create and build during Makerspace. This is the first year Gator Run has offered Makerspace as a Specials class. Last year, teachers used the Makerspace classroom every couple of weeks for 45 minutes, but this year students have dedicated class time with teacher Amy Koch. “Every class, kindergarten through fifth grade, comes to Makerspace for 30-minute increments two days in a row on a seven-day rotation. The concept is for kids to use their imaginations to create and build whatever they want in an open environment,” explains Mrs. Koch. “In Makerspace, students gain hands-on learning through design, 54 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM
construction, experimentation, creativity and collaboration with their peers.” There is no set curriculum. Students are free to let their imaginations run wild using various materi-
als and activities. There are optional Makerspace challenges should students need ideas of what to do
during their time in the Makerspace classroom. “Some of the activities kindergarten through second graders enjoy are Magic Tracks, Model Magic clay, Ozobot color coding robots, and the Lego wall,” shares Mrs. Koch. “Grades three through five gravitate towards the KEVA planks, Straws and Connectors, Magformers, Stop Motion movie making, snap circuits, marble runs, and deconstruction of donated devices.” Mrs. Koch says she is amazed by the students’ love for cardboard and all the things they can build. She says it is super rewarding and fun to provide children with a chance to experience and create. “My hope is that the Makerspace experience provides students an opportunity to explore activities and projects at home, away from the magnetic pull of electronic devices, TV and the internet.”

Literacy Coach Barbara McDermott organized the school’s “Sweet Dreams” project, in which Country Isles students donated new pajamas and storybooks to kindergarten students at Walker Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale. “The students, parents and staff of Country Isles Elementary are thankful for how fortunate we are and wanted to reach out to others in our community and ‘pay it forward,’” shares Mrs. McDermott. “Our students were extremely generous. Through our Sweet Dreams project, we collected 270 pajamas and 335 books!” While the students, teachers and administrators at Walker Elementary were

excited and appreciative of the gifts, Mrs. McDermott says it was the Country Isles students who gained the most by giving back to others. This was especially true for the Student Council members who were able to deliver the donations. “We are so fortunate to have so many things that it felt great to give some of that to other kids,” shares fifth grader Emily Stevens. “It was nice to give to the kids because they don’t have much and to see their happiness, it made me happy,” added fifth grader Matiz Thompson. Country Isles students also enjoyed a treat during Celebrate Literacy Week. Nationally-renowned storyteller Carrie Sue Ayvar shared some of her stories. The third-generation bilingual storyteller is dedicated to preserving and promoting the art of storytelling throughout the United States and Mexico. “During her presentation, students were taken on a journey of traditional, international and personal tales,” explains Mrs. McDermott. “Ms. Ayvar took listeners on a journey into the imagination connecting people, languages, and cultures through her stories that flowed effortlessly between Spanish and English.” Ms. Ayvar shared additional stories and experiences with students in Country Isles’ Dual Language Program.

Imagine Charter School at Weston Middle School Students Get a Taste for Knowledge BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents in Patricia Roach’s Health and Wellness class at Imagine Charter School at Weston Middle School are experiencing the benefits of healthy eating firsthand. Using a hydroponic recyclable indoor garden, as well as an outdoor garden, the children are growing fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs. “Hydroponics is a way to grow plants without using soil,” explains Mrs. Roach. “Instead, the plants are grown in a water-based or non-soil based solution that contains all the nutrients they need to grow and thrive.” The class created a hydroponic garden using recycled materials. Mrs. Roach says they used two-liter soda bottles as containers, strips of washcloths for the wick to bring water and nutrients to the plants, and hulled coconut husk for the growing media. “We have grown plants from seeds in our hydroponic garden,” shares Mrs. Roach. “We have also transferred some of the seedlings to our outdoor garden to grow in soil as they were outgrowing their hydroponic containers.” The students have successfully grown cilantro, lavender, jalapeno, mint, chives, lettuce and arugula in the hydroponics garden. In the outdoor garden, the class is growing tomatoes, jalapeno, red bell pepper, sweet peppers, key lime, and lettuce. While the tomatoes and peppers are still growing, Mrs. Roach
says students have been able to sample small leaves of cilantro, lettuce, chives and mint.
While the children have enjoyed getting their hands dirty in the garden, Mrs. Roach says there is much more to this project than digging in dirt. During class she has taught students how a plant-based diet benefits health and wellness. “We have researched, watched videos, and read articles on how eating healthy really impacts your mind and body. You are using clean eating as fuel to have your mind and body performing at its best. Children will benefit by having a healthy weight, more energy, better grades, and a better mood.” Mrs. Roach believes hands-on projects like the hydroponic garden are invaluable. “Project-based learning increases student learning, engagement and performance. Students really love to dive-in and dig deeper by getting actively involved in their lessons. Hands On, Minds On!”
Manatee Bay Family Fun Day Focuses on Health & Wellness BY STACEY BOMSER

anatee Bay Elementary School hosted its second annual Family Fun Day. “The Family That Plays Together, Has Fun Together” was the theme of this year’s event which offered plenty of old-fashioned fun with games like kickball, hula hoop and others. “We host the annual Family Fun Day to promote family bonding, to take a little break from technology and actually be part of our active and vibrant community,” explains Event Co-Chair Jessica Gandara. “It’s a day to make new friendships while focusing on health and wellness.” According to Co-Chair Sheril Foster, “Childhood obesity is unfortunately a big issue in today’s society and with the ease and intrigue of technology, not enough kids are moving or being active. This event is a fun way to get kids exercising while being introduced to healthy snacks and foods they have probably never been exposed to. We wanted to give parents delicious and easy ideas to packing a more nutritious lunch.” Those messages were not lost on attendees. Following the event, the co-chairs say they fielded a lot of positive feedback from parents. One parent said their child

was now eating carrots and hummus as a snack thanks to the event. Vendors such as Raw Juice, Healthy Express and Substantial Subs offered samples of healthy food choices, while Live Well Chiropractic and Memorial Hospital promoted the importance of health and wellness. That includes getting plenty of exercise. Mark in the Park organized a variety of sports games, Coral Reef gymnastics brought out some of its equipment, and Karate America presented karate demonstrations. But one of the highlights of the day was a giant Zumba class led by fourth grade teacher Tammy Broderick. The Family Fun Day event chairs agree it was incredible to see so many children and families enjoying themselves without electronics. “No one had their phones out except to take pictures and videos,” notes Gandara. “We saw so many people connecting and children working as a team and making new friends.” Foster adds, “We have families that are new to the school and they were in awe. They couldn’t believe what a great community they moved into and they got to meet so many of their new neighbors.”

Lloyd Beach Sate Park. If you can’t get away, be sure to make this Spring Break one the remember anyway.

PRIDE Club Promotes Cultural Awareness at Cypress Bay High School BY STACEY BOMSER
W
eston is a multi-cultural community and no where is that more evident than in our schools. At Cypress Bay High School, the PRIDE (Promoting Relationships In Diversity through Education) club celebrates cultural diversity and works to unite the school community. “When you go to such a big school that has such a diverse population, it is so important to learn about different cultures,” states PRIDE President Emmy Semprun. “It’s one thing to know your friend is from China or Spain, but it is another to really experience what that means to them.” Appreciating one another for who they are is one of the main goals of PRIDE. “Our end is to encourage cultural inclusion, acceptance and curiosity in aim to strengthen every student’s understanding of culture, and differences in general,” explains PRIDE Vice President Nicolas Trigo. “These efforts can manifest themselves in many ways, but we always try to communicate it in a positive, fun environment.” For years, PRIDE has sponsored International Night at Cypress Bay. It’s a chance for students to share their culture and traditions with others. That’s how Emmy first got involved with the club; she

U.S. Navy Brings Virtual Reality to Cypress Bay BY LAUREN PABIAN, STUDENT WRITER

s part of the Navy Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Tour 2018, officers of the U.S. Navy brought a Virtual Reality (VR) experience to Cypress Bay High School. The purpose of the event was to teach high school students about Navy recruitment opportunities. “We’re bringing this event to Cypress Bay to increase Navy awareness,” Chief Petty Officer Kimberly Martinez said. “We wanted to expose the students to some of the opportunities the Navy has to offer and some of the different career paths, specifically our science, technology, engineering and math.” The Navy parked a bus called the Nimitz on the Bay’s campus where students participated in the VR experience. To participate, students put on a VR Oculus headset and experienced a simulation of piloting a high-speed assault craft. “You put the VR glasses on and you can look 360 degrees and it’s like you’re there,” Chief Martinez said. “It’s really cool; it’s first hand and it’s something different than looking at a video game screen at home on your couch.” In addition to the VR experience, Navy officers also brought booths where students were able to get Navy

By giving students a more personal interaction, the Navy can let them experience a hands-on demonstration of STEM activities.” Senior Kristian Terrell said he was interested in the event since he is currently being recruited by the Navy. Terrell said the VR experience was appealing to him because he was able
to get first-hand experience as a special operator. “The VR experience increased my interest in this specific job field; special operators go through a lot of training and they’re usually highly skilled in combat,” Terrell said. “It gave me a really unique opportunity to see what I’d be putting myself into if I decide to become a special operator.” Beyer said this event is important because it allows students to learn about the full range of career opportunities that the Navy offers. “The need for STEM professionals continues to grow and the U.S. Navy wishes to give students a better idea of what opportunities are out there,” Beyer said. “Students are often expected to have an idea of what they want to do post-high school graduation, but the reality is that they often don’t know what is available to them. f your house is a mess, you have shoes all over the place, dirty laundry, beds unmade and perhaps your children are having breakfast for dinner, and they are still alive, you’ve had a great day! No supermom here, who are you kidding? Being a parent is enough title for me. No need to impress anyone except my children and keeping the house impeccable is not a trait they care for anyway. Believe me, spending quality time with them and feeding their bottomless pit, a.k.a. stomach, is what our children need and ask
for the most. I do recognize that we live in a society that encourages parents, and mothers especially, to be super humans. We are encouraged to have everything under control, but we can’t and that is still OK. Heck, we have every robot and gadget available to wash dishes, self-vacuum, etc., and it’s still humanly impossible to have everything under control -- so stop putting yourself through that mental abuse.

One of the beauties of being a parent is the unpredictability of our children. For example, the house is picked up, everyone is fed and bathed, and you decide you just want to sit, close your eyes for a minute, just a minute, and breathe in your favorite scented candle. T
he Yoga Diet isn’t about losing weight or being skinny. Instead, it’s about getting in line with nature and learning to eat in a way that connects you with yourself and the planet. The idea is to create balance and strength in the body and provide healing to the organs and the blood. Since The Yoga Diet is vegan, it’s also a highly energizing diet and one that creates a calmer and peaceful mind. Here’s what you need to know if you want to eat like a true yogi: Emphasize Hydrating Beverages – The Yoga Diet is hydrating, nourishing and cleansing. It supports the lymphatic system which is one of the body’s natural detox pathways. Replace your coffee with green or yerba mate tea, sodas for plain water or with lemon, and have a cup of vegetable broth with lunch or dinner. At night, you may find a cup of turmeric, peppermint, or ginger tea comforting instead of turning to sweets. Start Morning with Porridge and Fruit – This is commonly consumed on a yogic diet for breakfast due to its warming and energizing properties. Common grains include oats, quinoa, rice, barley, amaranth, and millet, which are all highly prized for their unique vitamin and mineral content. Avoid wheat because it can be inflammatory. Sweet fruits are eaten for their high sugar content which provides energy for the day ahead. They also assist in cleansing the body’s elimination channels. Coconut or soy yogurt can be added. Make Lunch the Biggest Meal of the Day – The digestive fire is greatest at noon, so it’s best to consume the largest meal during this time. Aim for a larger lunch of raw vegetables and salads with vegan-based proteins such as tempeh, tofu, chickpeas, navy beans, or sprouted grains. Other good options include cooked root vegetables, curries, and vegetable or miso soup. Fats should come from nourishing oils such as olive, hemp, or flax. Nuts and seeds may be consumed in small amounts. Allow Space Between Meals – Yogis allow space in between meals to allow for optimal nutrient absorption and proper assimilation of nutrients. This ensures digestion is complete before the next meal is consumed. During the afternoon hours feel free to drink plenty of warm tea, which may help prevent cravings and assist in elimination. Eat Mostly Cooked Foods at Dinner – During dinnertime, it’s important to eat cooked foods but also to keep portions small. Cooked foods ground the body and allow you to rest more efficiently than energizing raw foods do. For your evening meal, consume plenty of cooked vegetables, lentil soup, and be sure to include at least one cooked root vegetable such as carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, yams, squash, or pumpkin. You may have a hot cup of tea, broth, or some miso soup to soothe you to sleep. Eat with the Right Attitude – The most important part of The Yoga Diet is to eat with gratitude and love. Take time to eat your meals in silence and outside in nature whenever you can. This connects you to the planet on a greater level. It also makes you more aware of your food and helps you learn to eat to nourish your body instead of just eating to satisfy your cravings. he eyes are the first thing we notice when we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. Perhaps people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts,” also known as blepharoplasty. A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Removing this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour. For those patients with puffiness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes. The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch,” no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation. Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery. If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty. Do Lifestyle Choices Affect Glaucoma? BY DR. JANE THERRIEN

eople today are increasingly interested in how lifestyle choices affect health. Patients with glaucoma want to help themselves and save their sight in any way they can beyond medications and surgery. The traditional view has been that lifestyle choices do not play a role in glaucoma, but several studies show that lifestyle factors can influence eye pressure, which is a major risk factor for glaucoma. There is little data, however, on whether these factors impact the development (or worsening) of glaucoma. For example, factors that increase eye pressure do not necessarily increase the risk of glaucoma and factors that lower eye pressure may not protect one from developing glaucoma. Sustained lowering of eye pressure is the most important part of glaucoma treatment, and lifestyle changes are only complementary. Exercise: Aerobic exercise helps lower eye pressure, but the studies were not conducted in glaucoma patients and you must have approval from your primary physician first. Weightlifting can raise eye pressure, especially if the breath is held; however, there is no evidence that it increases the risk of developing glaucoma.

Caffeine: Drinking coffee increases eye pressure for a short duration. Small amounts of coffee are fine, but excessive caffeine intake is not ideal. One study found that drinking five or more cups of caffeinated coffee increased the risk of developing glaucoma. In summary, lifestyle choices can modify eye pressure and may influence the risk of developing glaucoma. Since there is not enough clinical data to make broad recommendations regarding lifestyle factors, you should discuss with your doctor whether specific changes may be appropriate for you. ne of the most misunderstood aspects of the law is the Appeal. Everyone has heard the term, but most people don’t really understand what the process entails. Although everyone technically has the right to appeal a lower court’s decision, only under limited circumstances will the filing of an appeal be successful. Appeals in Florida are filed with the District Courts of Appeal. There are five District Courts of Appeal, which cover the entire state. In Broward County appeals are filed in the 4th District Court of Appeal which is physically located in Palm Beach County. Cases that are appealed in Miami Dade County would be appealed to the 3rd District Court of Appeal, which is located in Miami Dade County. There are certain deadlines which must be followed in order to file an appeal. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date that a final order is signed by the Court. I sometimes get individuals who call me to inquire about an appeal from an order signed six months before. Unfortunately, I must inform that they missed the deadline and so the order in question has now become final. Except under limited circumstances only final orders can be appealed. If a judge rules unfavorably in a matter during a hearing, that ruling cannot usually be appealed until a final order is signed.

An appeal is not a re-trial of the case. An appeal does not require witnesses to come to court and give testimony all over again. It is not a “DO OVER.” In an appeal you are asking a three-judge panel to review the lower courts decisions to determine if there were any errors of law. If a judge does not allow certain testimony or evidence to be introduced into a trial, that may be an error of law and can be appealed. If a judge listens to testimony and does not believe a witness, that is a matter of credibility and cannot be appealed. As you can see, the process is very technical in nature. Only issues which are preserved can be appealed. If in a divorce the couple voluntarily enters into a Marital Settlement Agreement, neither one can subsequently file an appeal, since an Agreement was reached. Such an agreement is binding upon the parties. If, however, the parties do not reach an Agreement, and a Judge issues a Final Judgment, either party may file an appeal and question the Court’s ruling. Statistics show that only a very small percentage of appeals are in fact granted. In most instances, if an appeal is granted; the case is sent back to the trial court for further proceedings; consistent with the Appellate Court’s ruling. There generally is no time limit for an Appellate Court to decide and waiting 12 months for a decision is not all that unusual. I strongly suggest that if you are considering an appeal, make sure you are within your 30-day window and hire an experienced attorney. The law firm of Evan H. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, ne needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. f your first movements are wrong you can be almost sure to produce a bad swing! A good grip and a solid athletic setup are the foundation of a good golf swing. Everything you are doing right before you are starting your swing you don’t have to correct during the swing. That’s why a proper start is one of the most important keys to longer and straighter shots. There are many ways to mess your swing up early. The most common fault you can find with many golfers is when they take away their club too much to the inside too fast. This is especially true if you are coming from Dean Sklar, PGA the outside with an open clubface – slicing the ball. It’s somewhat counter-intuitive but if you want to come more from the inside you must take your club away on a proper target line. This means that you must take your club back on a line that may be straighter than your think. You should also move the club upwards earlier than you think during your backswing to keep the club on the proper arch. A takeaway that is early to the inside forces you to pick up your arms and club steeply to get them in the air somewhat after your takeaway. This does not only suppress a proper turn of your upper body but usually leads to a downswing that is coming from out to in into the ball leading to ugly sliced and pulled shots. This is also true if you are using your hands too much during your takeaway. The first movements of your swing are essential because your tempo and swing path ultimately result from your takeaway. Here’s what you need to focus on: ▸▸ Take your club away straight back along your target line the first couple of feet. The club should be slightly inside of the ball but outside of your hand-line. ▸▸ Take a closer look at the image. Try to think about your hands and shoulders forming a triangle that you want to move with the big muscles of your back and shoulders. Don’t break your triangle before you’ve reached your right leg. To accomplish this, focus on moving the grip of your golf club and not your clubhead. If you move the grip and your hands towards your right thigh, the clubhead should stay outside of your hands, which is the proper path. If you keep the club and your hands, upper body and shoulders steady as one unit, you will move the clubhead on the proper swing path. ▸▸ Put a golf ball a foot behind the ball you want to play. Two feet behind that second ball put your bucket. You should now be able let the second ball roll softly into the bucket with your takeaway. If the rolling ball is moving the bucket you are moving back too fast. If you don’t move the second ball at all, you are missing the proper line with your takeaway. Timing of Tooth Eruption BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN
O
ne of the most common anxieties parents share with us concerns the timing of the eruption of teeth. We are often asked: “When are the first teeth scheduled to enter the mouth?” or “Which is ‘better,’ late vs. early erupting teeth?” The truth of the matter is that although there are published milestones, there is still a normal variation/range that teeth may be expected to erupt. In terms of which is better, there is no real benefit for early or late eruption. However, extreme deviations may cause a practical challenge as
we will discuss. Let’s start with the primary (or “baby”) teeth. The first primary tooth to erupt is usually the lower central incisor between 5-8 months of age. The teeth will then follow the “rule of twos,” which is that two additional teeth will erupt every two months until around 2-2.5 yrs old. There is a total of 20 primary teeth equally divided between upper and lower arches. After the eruption of the lower central incisors, we will see the eruption of the upper central incisors, the lower lateral incisors (as the name suggests, next to the central incisors) followed by the upper lateral incisors. The pattern will continue from center laterally with the lower erupting earlier than the upper counterparts. Premature eruption of primary teeth occurs in 1:2000. This can occur in two ways. “Natal” teeth are present at birth and “prenatal” teeth erupt in the first 30 days of life. When teeth erupt prematurely, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider (pediatrician or pediatric dentist) as strategies for feeding will need to be addressed, especially if breastfeeding is planned. There are also structures which are present at birth which resemble premature teeth, but are actually not the primary teeth. One of the most common examples of this is “Epstein pearls.” They are visible cysts located in the upper arch in the front close to where the primary teeth are expected to be positioned. There is no treatment recommended for this as long as there is no interference with feeding and no observed discomfort for the child. As with all published milestones, it is important to acknowledge the fact that these are just averages and that “normal” has a range. We find variation in gender, with females being ahead of males. It is also important to note that deviations in one area may have no bearing on others. For example, there are many children who are either “ahead” or “behind” in dental development, but are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in skeletal growth. They do, however, give us an idea of what to plan for and some guidance on timing of interventional treatment, whether dental or orthodontic, when indicated.

astrointestinal ailments such as heartburn and acid reflux seem so common nowadays. Most people are familiar with medications, such as Prilosec and Nexium. Some individuals have become so dependent on these drugs they take daily dosages in order to cope with the chronic discomfort. But as popular as they are, these drugs classified as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), have been linked to serious health conditions and even death. PPIs are beneficial, because they are potent and very effective in reducing acid in the stomach. What makes these some of the most over-used drugs in the market is that they are readily available over-the-counter and offer quick relief for conditions such as heartburn and indigestion. An estimated 15 million Americans take PPIs every year either by prescription or over-the-counter. Unfortunately, taking these drugs regularly can put you at a higher risk for dementia, osteoporotic fractures, kidney failure, infection, nutritional deficiencies and early death, according to several recent studies. The risk is created not only by the over use of PPIs, but also due to interaction with other drugs. The situation is so alarming the U.S Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has launched a stewardship program aimed at decreasing unnecessary use of PPIs. VA doctors are being very cautious when prescribing PPIs and are removing patients from PPI therapy when there is no clear purpose for their use and patients can tolerate discontinuation. The Food and Drug Administration recommends patients take over-the-counter PPIs for no more than 14 days. No more than three 14-day treatment courses should be used in one year. If you are suffering from a stomach-acid related condition, there are other alternatives to deal with the problem. Changes in lifestyle and better nutrition are a good start, but it is important that you work with a qualified practitioner who can guide you in the right direction. Chiropractic Manipulation: The Rand Corporation Speaks BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER
A
n independent non-profit research agency, the RAND (“Research and Development”) Corporation conducts research and development for the United States government and the private sector. Its research programs are extensive, and include military defense, applied education, economics, civil justice, sociology and health sciences. Internationally respected, its health sciences department is the largest non-university based research center in the U.S. For the past 30 years one of its prime functions has been the development of methods to assess the appropriateness of various health care procedures, and to assist health provider groups with research aimed at establishing practice guidelines. In 1991, the RAND Corporation published a major report titled, “The Appropriateness of Manipulation for Back Pain”. Together with other significant reports from the United States, Europe and Canada, the RAND report helped to establish Chiropractic manipulation as a first line approach to management of most back pain. Then in 1996, a second independent multidisciplinary RAND report titled, “The Appropriateness of Manipulation and Mobilization of the Cervical Spine”, concluded Chiropractic cervical manipulation is both effective and safe for many patients. The second RAND report, which comprises 507 literature reviews on effectiveness and safety of cervical manipulation, and ratings on appropriateness for over 1400 specific conditions by a panel of experts from chiropractic, medicine, orthopedics and neurology, established that: ▸▸ Chiropractic manipulation is appropriate for many patients with common categories of neck pain and headache. The best designed neck pain trial reviewed by the RAND panel was conducted in the Netherlands, and reported better long-term results for patients receiving Chiropractic manipulation than those receiving standard medical care or a placebo. The RAND literature review concluded that Chiropractic cervical manipulation provides pain relief and increased range of motion for most patients with sub-acute or chronic neck pain and relief for patients with various types of headaches. ▸▸ Chiropractic cervical manipulation is significantly safer than a number of medical treatments given for the same symptoms. For example, serious complications from manipulation are exceptionally rare, and occur with a frequency of one per one million treatments, compared to 1000 per million with the use of common anti-inflammatory medication, and nearly 16,000 per one million for cervical spine surgery. A significant body of research in the form of randomized controlled trials, and literature in the form of case studies, reports both short and long-term benefits from Chiropractic cervical manipulation for a variety of other conditions, including referred pain to the shoulder/arm/hand, thoracic outlet syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome and TMJ disorders. Since the 1996 RAND literature review, there have been a number of other scientific trials from various parts of the world showing positive results of Chiropractic cervical manipulation. This most recent RAND report, supported by new research emerging currently, establishes unequivocally the appropriateness, effectiveness and safety of chiropractic care for many types of neck pain and headache. wide variety of skin and coat conditions can cause your dog to itch and scratch, but pinpointing the problem can sometimes be difficult because many skin disorders cause similar outward signs. Following are four major categories of skin conditions seen in dogs. Bacterial Skin Infections. The most common bacteria identified in bacterial skin diseases in dogs are Staphylococcus. Not contagious to people or other pets, these bacteria commonly cause a condition called “pyoderma” that results in itchy, yellow pustules; reddened skin; ulcerations; and/or hair loss. Bacterial skin infections are usually diagnosed based on the patient’s history as well as the location and appearance of the affected area. Your veterinarian may also perform blood tests and skin tests to determine the origin of the problem. Many bacterial skin infections have an underlying cause, such as parasite infestation, hormonal or immune system disorder, or allergy. If the underlying cause is not treated appropriately, the skin infection will likely return. Treatment involves an antibiotic shampoo followed by application of an antibiotic ointment and oral antibiotics. Fungal Skin Infections. The most common fungal skin infection in dogs is ringworm, which causes circular patches of hair loss usually on the head and legs. Diagnosis is best made via a fungal culture, where your veterinarian will pluck a few hairs from the edge of the circular patch and grow the fungi to see exactly what it is. Treatment for ringworm involves bathing the dog in a special fungicidal shampoo and administering antibiotics. Complete eradication of the infection can take a month or longer. Ringworm is quite contagious to both people and other pets. Therefore, children and other household pets should be kept away from an infected dog during the treatment period. Anyone encountering the affected dog should wash their hands regularly. Allergic Skin Diseases. Allergies develop when your pet’s immune system overreacts to certain substances, causing tissue irritation. Skin conditions caused by allergy are challenging to diagnose and difficult to treat. Your veterinarian will first rule out all other types of skin irritation before making a diagnosis of allergy. Allergic dermatitis can be triggered by natural and artificial fibers, drugs, plants, dust, and food ingredients. Treatment of allergies in dogs varies from ointments and sprays to injections and oral medication. A steroid called cortisone is sometimes used to ease the itching, but it can cause other health problems if used long-term. Although there is no cure for allergies, they can be controlled. The best remedy is to avoid whatever it is that sparks the allergy. Parasitic Skin Diseases. There are many parasites that can infest dogs, all of which irritate the dog and cause self-mutilation from excessive scratching and biting. Fleas are one of the biggest culprits. Repeated infiltration by fleas can cause an immediate skin reaction to even one bite. If your dog is allergic, he will scratch excessively, causing redness, bumps, pustules, scabs, and hair loss in the affected areas. Other small bugs such as chiggers, deer flies, and gnats can also bother dogs, but they don’t typically cause extensive skin problems. Help Is Available. Most skin conditions can be controlled but not cured and therefore require frequent, sometimes lifelong, treatment. No matter the cause of your dog’s skin irritation, it is possible to ease his pain and suffering. When you do, it will be a relief for both of you. ere in Weston, we take for granted that when we turn on a tap, clean water flows. We can cook, bathe and clean our homes without a second thought. We flush and it’s gone. Sadly, it’s not like Weston in many other parts of the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 844 million people across the globe don’t have access to safe drinking water. Another 2.3 billion

have no access to sanitation. And, over a million die each year from water-borne illness and sanitationrelated disease. Add conflict and climate change to the equation, and WHO predicts that by the year 2025 half of the world’s population will live in water-stressed areas. Rotarians have stepped forward to make a difference by making water and sanitation one of their primary areas of focus. In fact, Rotary has set a goal to provide safe water, sanitation and hygiene to everyone by 2030. A lofty goal, you might think. But Rotarians in South Florida and worldwide are working together to make this goal a reality. To date, 23 million people now have safe water and 21 million have access to sanitation and hygiene because of Rotary projects. Many, if not most, of these sustainable water and sanitation projects are funded in part with grants from The Rotary Foundation. Globally, 1.2 million Rotarians work to build wells, fund hygiene education programs, clean the waterways, and build sanitation systems. All of these projects include a sustainability factor, to ensure ben-
eficiaries are able to maintain systems and education programs long after our Rotary volunteers are gone. From South Africa to Honduras to the Philippines to Flint, Michigan – wherever there is a water crisis – you’ll find Rotarian volunteers on the ground and raising funds to help people live safer, healthier lives. The impact of clean water availability goes far beyond basic health. Women and children are touched the most, as the ability to attend school is often affected by the availability of sanitation, and women may spend hours each day collecting water for a family’s most basic needs. Access to clean water is a serious economic issue in many developing countries, as well as a health concern. The Rotary Club of Weston has participated in water and sanitation projects, and raises tens of thousands of dollars annually for The Rotary Foundation. Through the Foundation and efforts of passionate Rotary volunteers, the goal of clean water for all becomes more achievable each year. South Florida Rheumatology Opens Weston Office Who is your typical patient? Our typical patient presents to our office for evaluation of many common rheumatic disorders. It is truly rewarding how we can treat these patients, alleviating their pain while restoring their functionality. However, we also often encounter patients with very complex, rare and difficult to treat autoimmune disorders. Every day is an exciting new challenge.

or over 30 years, South Florida Rheumatology has been serving patients suffering from rheumatic disorders such as osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, lupus, osteoporosis, as well as rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis. It was Broward County’s first rheumatology practice. With the opening of its newest office in Weston, staffed by two Spanish-speaking physicians, South Florida Rheumatology is now able to reach a more diverse population of patients. Yesenia Santiago-Casas, MD, FACR, FACP, shares more about the services offered at the new Weston location and what patients can expect at South Florida Rheumatology. Why did South Florida Rheumatology decide to open a Weston office? Weston is an underserved area for patients suffering with rheumatic disorders. Taking into consideration this continuingly growing Spanish-speaking population, we felt that opening a Weston office staffed by Dr. Lopez-Lopez and myself, who are both fully bilingual board-certified rheumatologists, would be a perfect fit.

What is your medical background? I joined our practice after serving as an attending physician and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Rheumatology at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus in San Juan. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Puerto Rico. I completed my undergraduate training there, serving as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine and later becoming an attending physician in rheumatology. What is Dr. Lopez-Lopez’s training? Dr. Linnette Lopez-Lopez joined our practice in July 2016. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Puerto Rico, where she also served as an assistant professor. Dr. Lopez-Lopez received her medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine. She completed her residency and fellowship at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. In addition, Dr. LopezLopez has contributed in several major research projects. What does a rheumatologist treat? We treat patients with a wide array of rheumatic disorders including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Paget’s disease, polymyalgia rheumatica, Sjogren’s, sarcoidosis, systemic vasculitis, and polymyositis, among others. We understand the challenges patients living with these conditions face and focus every day on providing the best patient care. We do not perform surgery as a rheumatologist utilizes medication and other modalities. We refer to our surgical colleagues only when there are no other options. 98 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM

Why is personalized patient care particularly important in this field? In rheumatology, we often encounter very complex and difficult to treat diseases that may present in an atypical manner making them truly challenging to diagnose and treat. Certainly, addressing each patient that we encounter and designing a treatment plan that works best for that particular patient is of utmost importance. We work with each patient to create a customized plan that may include medication, joint injections, lifestyle modifications, and physical therapy. Our goal is to create a treatment plan that can allow our patients to return to enjoying their daily lives.
What is new in this field? Rheumatology is continuously evolving. Several new biologics have been recently approved for the management of psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, uveitis, ankylosing spondylitis, and osteoporosis. Our office actively participates in clinical research, while maintaining our commitment towards providing the best patient care. What can patients expect to find in the new Weston office? We have a staff of medical assistants and x-ray technicians. We also offer four examining rooms, a vitals room, infusion suite, and onpremise lab. What differentiates South Florida Rheumatology from other practices? Our physicians are widely recognized among the best rheumatologists in South Florida, with extensive experience at local hospitals, universities, and medical associations. Our founding partners, Dr. Charles Kahn and Dr. Wayne Riskin, have received the honor of being named Florida Super Doctors for several years. They both served as President of the Florida Society of Rheumatology and have had teaching appointments at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Together, we understand the challenges patients living with rheumatic disorders face. We work with each patient to create a customized treatment plan and help them achieve control of their disease and live a full life.
