WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series Concludes with Aerosmith Tribute BY STACEY BOMSER
O
n Saturday, March 16th, the Aerosmith tribute band, Jaded, will take the stage at Weston Regional Park. This is the final show of the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series. Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation, said he choose Jaded because its music transcends generations. “The music of Aerosmith is what I listened to in the 80s and that my children are
now exposed to today via movies, television, video games, etc.” He says tribute bands such as Jaded are always popular, especially with the WestonNights concertgoers. “I think our audience enjoys being able to enjoy, and sometimes sing along to, familiar music that is family friendly.” There should be no problem singing along during this month’s show. Expect to hear songs such as Living on the Edge, Dream On, I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, Sweet Emotion, Love in an Elevator, and many more. Jaded is known for its concert-style, all-ages friendly, high-energy version of a live Aerosmith concert event. Decker says the WestonNights Concert Series has been a huge success and plans are already in the works to expand the program. “While we used to do one concert per year, we are now doing three, and we may add to that in the years ahead. With multiple dates and a variety of artists we hope we will find something that the majority of our residents will enjoy each season.” Decker and his staff are always on the lookout for bands that will appeal to the WestonNights audience. “We keep an eye out on other events around South

Florida, check with other cities for recommendations, and the internet even provides us a chance to ‘see and hear’ the bands without necessarily traveling all over the place.” Jaded will play from 7-10pm on March 16th on the event stage in Weston Regional Park. The event stage is close to the park’s largest playground, which is a plus for families with smaller children. Concertgoers should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to sit back and enjoy the music under the stars. Guests are welcome to bring coolers and picnic dinners; alcohol is not permitted. Food trucks will be on site selling a variety of food and beverages.

Symphony of the Americas to Perform Free Outdoor Pops Concert BY STACEY BOMSER
W
eston Town Center will transform into an open-air concert hall on Sunday, March 10th when the Symphony of the Americas performs a free, outdoor pops concert. It is presented by the City of Weston and Weston Music Society. The free concert has grown into one of the most highlyanticipated musical events in Weston, attracting a crowd of all ages. “It is such a delight to see families, singles, and couples, with ages from toddlers to grandparents, brought together by this wonderful musical program,” states Weston Music Society Co-President Andrea Burghardt. This year’s “music under the stars” program will feature scores from popular blockbuster movies such as Mission Impossible, Pirates of the Caribbean, Superman Returns, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, as well as highlights from the beloved musical movie, The Sound of Music. All music is performed by the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese. This concert provides a unique opportunity to introduce the community to
the beauty of classical music and a worldclass symphony orchestra. The outdoor venue is especially nice for families with young children who may not be ready for the traditional theater experience. Christy Blackford, Weston Music Society Vice President of Education, encourages parents to bring their children to this free concert. “This is such a perfect follow-up to the Weston Music Society’s In-Schools Music Program, which introduces the instruments of the orchestra to all public elementary students in Weston. They get to hear a full orchestra playing together and experience the auditory and emotional impact this has.” The Weston Music Society takes great pride in presenting its music education program to students and Symphony of the Americas concerts to the community. “Our organization is thrilled by the return of this world-class orchestra that, through the generosity of our City, is presented free to the community,” notes Weston Music Society Co-President Lou Marett. “Plato said ‘Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind and gaiety to life’. Do join us for this wonderful evening of music.” n The Symphony of the America’s pops concert takes place on Sunday, March 10th at 6pm behind the Bell Tower in Weston Town Center. The concert is free. Seating is limited; guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs to enjoy the concert in comfort. For more information go to www.westonmusicsociety.org.

Weston Art Guild Gallery Offers Art Space and Classes BY STACEY BOMSER
A
rt patrons have a new opportunity to view original artwork, as well as learn artistic techniques. The Weston Art Guild has opened its own gallery as a place to foster art appreciation and creativity. “The Weston Art Guild wanted to open its own gallery to help fulfill its mission statement: creating a cultural atmosphere in the community by educating the public on the importance of all forms of visual arts,” explains Weston Art Guild President Lynda Sauls. “Plus, some of the members
wanted to have a physical interactive presence in the community and collaborate with each other.” There are approximately 100 pieces of artwork on display. According to Sauls, “We do not carry a theme, as we encourage the artists to exhibit the style and subject matter that they relate to most. Patrons will see realism and abstract art done in a variety of mediums such as oil, watercolor, acrylic paints and encaustic paint, as well as photography, stained glass, and Plexiglass sculpture.” In addition to viewing artwork, the community can take art classes taught by members of the Weston Art Guild. “We want to offer classes to help connect with the community and share our techniques with other artists,” shares Sauls. “People love watching the creative process. Many are visual learners and like talking and interacting with artists.” Upcoming art classes include a Pallet Knife workshop by Patricia Beltran, Portrait Painting class by Barbara Burk, and an Abstract Voice

class led by Kay Kiria. Sauls will teach an Encaustic workshop, demonstrating the art of painting with molten beeswax and color pigments fusing layers together. The Weston Art Guild Gallery also offers several monthly programs. Still Life Drawing is held the second Tuesday of the month from 12:303pm. Live Artist Painting takes place the second Friday of the month from 6-9pm. It’s a chance to come meet Weston Art Guild artists and watch them work, discuss their technique, and enjoy music and light snacks. A Creative Question and Critique program is offered the fourth Friday of the month from 4-6:30pm. The gallery is open to the public Thursday through Saturday from 3-7pm and Sunday from 1-5pm. It is located at 13141 West Sunrise Boulevard, in front of the Sawgrass Mills Mall behind Pollo Tropical. The space was made possible by Azor Advisory Services, Inc. “Their forward thinking to stimulate traffic to a shopping center by
allowing us to come in not only helps the Weston Art Guild but gives their shopping center a sense of traffic and activity,” notes Sauls. She encourages everyone to stop by and check it out. “The Weston Art Guild is very pleased to showcase the high quality of locally made art and I encourage everyone to make time to check out the gallery for themselves.” n For more information on the Weston Art Guild visit www.westonartguild.com.

Attendees were able to meet the men and women who serve and protect our community. A variety of law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal level were represented, including the
BSO Weston District, SWAT, Bomb Squad, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Highway Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). lovers enjoyed meeting the K9 officers of the ATF and Border Patrol, as well as touching an alligator presented by Fish and Wildlife law enforcement officers. The Weston Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Citizen Observer Patrol (COP) and YMCA presented informational booths with educational displays. The evening featured familyfriendly entertainment for all ages. There were children’s activities including games, bounce houses and inflatable slides. The DJ had everyone showing off their best dance moves. In keeping with the winter wonderland theme, guests enjoyed South Florida-style ice skating. Of course, the highlight of the night was the sky full of glistening snowflakes. The evening’s chilly temperatures made the “snow” flurries that much more realistic and enjoyable.

pproximately 100 players of all ages and skill levels came out for the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. Mayor Daniel Stermer welcomed chess enthusiasts from all across Broward County to the Weston Community Center for a friendly game of chess and some tasty checkerboard cookies. The Mayor was joined by Commissioner Byron Jaffe and Florida State Representative Richard Stark, along with members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Sunrise Police officers. Also in attendance were representatives from Chess for Kids, the chess program offered by the City as one of its Community Center classes for children, and Principal Heather Hedman-DeVaughn from Manatee Bay Elementary
School, who was there to cheer on her students. Mayor Stermer says it was a privilege to once again host the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. “I cannot be prouder to see as many people come out for scholastic chess as come out for a puppet show or other entertainment-type event. Today’s young boys and girls are simply amazing. They come to the Mayors’ Chess Challenge eager to learn from others of vary-
ing ages and skill sets.” This is the fourth year that Weston has participated in the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. It was created by Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan as a way to promote scholastic chess and its academic benefits. Different cities host the event at least once a month throughout the school year. “Weston is pleased to participate with Mayor Ryan and all of the other cities as a group to provide a great avenue for students to learn a game that also assists them with strategic thinking skills that they can use for the rest of their lives,” states Mayor Stermer. The Mayors’ Chess Challenge continues this month in Hollywood on March 9th and Oakland Park on March 23rd. In April, the City of Fort Lauderdale hosts on April 6th and the City of Lauderdale Lakes on April 25th. The program concludes on May 18th in Pembroke Pines. n For more information on the Mayors’ Chess Challenge visit www.sunrisefl.gov/index.aspx?page=721.

SPRING BREAK ACTIVITY GUIDE
S
pring Break is just around the corner. Many people, from around the country, will soon visit the beautiful beaches of South Florida. Here are some spring break activity ideas for those of us already lucky enough to live here.
Spring Break Day Camp
There are camps and activities for almost any interest. Whether your little one aspires to be the next David Beckham, the next Picasso or the next Gloria Estefan, there is likely a camp or activity right around the corner! Look over the next few pages to find information about areas camps that might interest your child.

Spring Break Ideas for Families Not Traveling
Give the kids the thrill of a lifetime while riding on an airboat through the untouched landscape of the Everglades. You will get to see some of Florida’s most exotic wild life including, of course the American Alligator. For more info contact Everglades Holliday Park at 954-434-8111 choose from multi-star resorts like the Margaritaville Beach Resort or find something a bit less expensive off the coast. Mid-week overnight prices won’t kill the budget either!
Check Out a Museum There are plenty of museum options to choose from in the area. Kids of all ages love the Museum of Discovery & Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection is a fascinating place to see many of the cars made famous in Hollywood films as well as some of the rarest Ferraris and Porsches the world over. Or, your family could check out marine life at the Miami Seaquarium. The opportunities are almost endless and, in many cases, just a short drive away.
Fishing
There are bodies of water almost everywhere you go in South Florida. Almost all of them contain wildlife. There are few better ways to teach the benefits of perseverance and patients than dipping
Video Game Olympics
The Beach
Video games aren’t just for kids! There are tons of entertaining video games that families can play together. Our family likes to buy some movie candy, pop some popcorn and go at it. Favorites for family time on the Xbox or PS4 include sing-along games like American Idol, Sports contest like the Madden football franchise or even Dance Revolution.
Staycation at a local Hotel One of the most exciting parts of traveling is staying in a new place, especially for kids. One thing South Florida has an abundance of is great hotels. Families that don’t have the time or finances to travel during Spring Break can get most of the benefits while staying close to home. hooks into the water and waiting for a bite. Many Broward County Parks allow and encourage fishing. Be sure to have the appropriate licenses. For more info on fishing licenses check out www.myfwc.com.
What better thing is there to do in South Florida when the kids are off school than go to the beach? There is certainly something for everyone: Hollywood Beach’s 1920s-style oceanfront promenade Broadwalk will appeal the nostalgic; Laid-back Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a great place to spend the day eating ice cream, reading a book and enjoying a less-busy existence; Pompano Beach offers terrific shopping and dining; the kids could watch mighty cruise ships set sail at Fort Lauderdale Beach; or, families can get away from it all at the John U. Lloyd Beach Sate Park. If you can’t get away, be sure to make this Spring Break one the remember anyway.
REAL ESTATE
Why is Staging Important and What is Trending in 2019? BY PHYLLIS SCARBERRY n times past, homes for sale flew off the shelf. Professional Real Estate agents are now observing that homes are staying on the market for longer periods of time. Of course, pricing is still a key element to moving Real Estate. However, what if the Buyers now have more choices? Better than “A Good Eye” I’ve often stated that how you live in a home and how you sell a home are two opposite concepts. A good Realtor with an “eye” can help with the suggestion of decluttering and de-personalization. However, a great Realtor will offer a staging consultation with an individual who is trained in that field to make the home appear in its “peak presentation” state. What is Trending in 2019 ▸▸ Warm neutrals replace gray-washed rooms ▸▸ Going smaller has become bigger. Therefore, making those “big box” homes cozier and homier is key to attracting Buyers ▸▸ Light, views and fresh air ▸▸ Wall of windows providing light ▸▸ Natural materials and motifs ▸▸ Living spaces with natural accents With a focus on clean, open spaces (along with spare Scandinavian design), stagers are leaning toward warmth and comfort with natural touches. Sitting in your den or great room should evoke the feeling of lying in a hammock on the beach on a breezy summer day. Some stagers might suggest prints and florals in natural-colored tones. Some may suggest a look of open-grain oak cabinetry, metallic linen draperies, saddle leather, and woven cotton rugs. Color swings keep the rooms fresh and inviting. According to Sue Wadden, Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams, “Grays are now in the midst of a warming trend.” Others have commented that there’s a swing back to white, off-white or antique white. Even though the feel and look of a home is attractive, today’s Buyers are more interested in greater affordability, convenience to schools, medical facilities, airports, etc., healthfulness, sustainability and comfort. Buyers are open to remodeling an existing home. There are very few newer or new construction homes in Weston. Given the fact that Buyers may be willing to remodel is promising. However, the remodeled home will bring about a better price for Sellers. Protection from Natural Disasters Natural disasters are occurring more frequently and with little warning. Changing out a garage door to a hurricane-proof door is a great place to start. Installing hurricane panels, whether vertical panels or accordions that have been permitted, is another great move to attract Buyers with too many choices. A home built to keep energy costs down is extremely important as well. Remember: A home seller does not have to revamp the entire home. A stager will make suggestions incorporating existing pieces to achieve the updated look. Bold, beautiful, and memorable are what make a home stand out in the growing marketplace.

Swing for Kids’ Sake Benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County BY STACEY BOMSER
W
eston Hills Country Club will play host to Swing for Kids’ Sake on Friday, March 8th. The golf tournament benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County. The organization provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-on-one mentoring relationships. Weston resident Fortuna Bookbinder is a Big Sister to Flor, an eighth grader at Indian Ridge Middle School. Bookbinder got involved with the program through Mujeres Latinas Impulsando (Empowering Women), a Weston-based organization of Latin women working to better the community. The retired English as a Second Language teacher says she was attracted to the idea of being able to help a young student. “Mentoring through Big Brothers Big Sisters allows me to give a student something I never had when I arrived in this country in the 1960’s,” explains Bookbinder, whose family immigrated from Cuba. “I desperately wanted someone to help me adapt to my new country and learn the language. This is my opportunity to give back and help someone in a way I didn’t have.”
smile
Bookbinder meets with Flor every Friday afternoon. During their sessions, they discuss school work as well as any problems Flor may be facing, academically or socially. They spend about half the session working on English vocabulary and grammar. Bookbinder says Flor is very receptive to her advice and suggestions. “I tell her to watch movies without subtitles, because in that situation she is training her brain to read, instead of listening. So now she only watches movies without the subtitles,” shares Bookbinder. “Flor also uses an English/Spanish online dictionary that I recommended for her to download.” Although they’ve only been together since October, Bookbinder says she’s already seeing noticeable improvement. “Flor was very shy at the beginning, now socially she is more gregarious and open to share. I also see improvement in her conversational skills. She is trying hard to talk to me and she wants to learn vocabulary. Flor will write words on little cards and hang them up on her mirror at home to memorize.” Bookbinder takes great pride in knowing she is helping a young girl adapt to her new country. “Life
was very unpleasant for me at that age because I couldn’t speak English. I failed all of my courses, except math. I would have loved to have someone help me along. So, at this stage in my life, when I have free time, I want to give back.” She says the experience has been richly gratifying. “This is probably the most rewarding activity I have done in my life. Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister is a wonderful thing for anyone to do. It’s incredible to see the improvement you can make in somebody’s life.” n To learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County and how you can get involved go to BBBSBroward.org. Working alongside CGA employees, the Weston U students were able to explore various career opportunities vital to running the city. Hands-on activities including viewing engineering maps, examining
local government, gained throughout the program, to carry out a mock city commission meeting. A one-day field trip to Washington, D.C., is also planned. This allows students to understand the relationship between local and national government. During the whirlwind tour students will visit sites such as Capitol Hill, the White House, many of the monuments and much more.

Weston BSO Offers Free Smoke Alarm Service to Seniors BY STACEY BOMSER
S
eniors possess the greatest fire risk in this country. To help protect our senior population, Weston BSO Fire Rescue will install smoke alarms or replace smoke alarm batteries for free in the homes of seniors as well as the disabled. This population is particularly vulnerable in the event of a home fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 30 percent of fatal home fire victims are at least 65 years of age. In Weston, that puts more than 5,000 residents at risk. “Smoke alarms are generally installed at the highest locations within a home,” explains Weston Fire Chief Todd Draizin. “Some homeowners do not have tall enough ladders to safely access the smoke alarm, while others may be unfamiliar with or unsteady on ladders. In an effort to reduce the risk of injury, Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services offers this service to Weston residents.” Chief Draizin says it’s important for all households to have a working smoke alarm. “It’s a known and proven fact that smoke alarms save lives. Like any piece of safety equipment, they only work if they are maintained.” Smoke alarms should be tested monthly. For
those that use a standard 9V battery, the battery should be changed twice a year. Chief Draizin suggests doing it when you change the clocks; Daylight Savings begins on March 10th. Other smoke alarms feature a ten-year, nonchangeable battery. In that case, the entire smoke alarm should be replaced every ten years. If you are unsure of the age of your smoke alarm, consider installing a new one.
Chief Draizin says homeowners may want to consider having smoke alarms linked to the home security system. “Smoke alarms that are connected to a monitoring company can notify 9-1-1 when you are not home or when you are sleeping. Generally speaking, fire doubles its size every 30 seconds, so a monitored system can help reduce the time it takes to call and help save lives and property.” In addition to installing smoke alarms and replacing batteries in the homes of Weston seniors and the disabled, Weston firefighters will also identify any risk factors present in the residence and share important fire and life safety education information, such as slip and fall prevention, fire safety tips, and hurricane preparedness suggestions. This is just one of many free services Weston BSO Fire Rescue offers the community. It also provides child car seat installation and inspections, blood pressure checks, and CPR certification classes. n To schedule a smoke alarm installation or battery replacement, or any of the other free community service programs, contact Fire Station 81 at 954-389-2015.

he Broward Sheriffs Office of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services would like to remind you that daylight savings time begins Sunday, March 10. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) recommends when you change your clocks you also change your smoke alarm’s battery. In a house fire, fire can double its size every 30 seconds. Today’s household furnishings burn much hotter and produce a considerably denser and more toxic smoke. A working smoke alarm can mean the difference between having enough time to get out or becoming another statistic. It’s a known and proven fact that smoke alarms save lives. Like any piece of safety equipment, they only work if they are maintained. All too often we hear at many emergency scenes “if I only would have…” or “if I only had a few more minutes I could have…”, please don’t become a statistic. It only takes a few minutes to test and maintain your smoke alarms. Most smoke alarms have a replaceable 9-volt batteries, now is a good time to put new batteries in. Newer smoke alarms are more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions and will help reduce false alarms. All smoke alarms, regardless of which batteries they use, should be replaced after ten years. Consider replacing your existing smoke alarms with a newer style smoke alarms which come with a non-replaceable lithium battery that once installed will last the life of the smoke alarm and don’t forget to test your smoke detectors monthly. Because smoke rises, install smoke alarms high on a wall or on a ceiling, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep smoke alarms ten feet or more away from the stove to reduce false alarms. Smoke alarms should be installed in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers. It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms, when one sounds, they all sound which will warn everyone in the house of a possible fire. Here are some safety tips on smoke detectors that can help to keep you and your family safe: ▸▸ A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. ▸▸ Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. Make sure everyone in the home understands the sound of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond. ▸▸ Make a home fire escape plan and practice the plan with everyone in the house. Always remember to include two ways out from each room and designate a safe meeting place outside to wait until help arrives. Remember: “Get out and stay out!” Never go back into a burning building. n For more information, please contact District Chief Todd Draizin at Weston Fire Station #81 at 954-389-2015 or by email at Todd_Draizin@Sheriff.org.

Weston Music Society Presents a Magical Night of Music BY STACEY BOMSER
C
oncertgoers enjoyed a one-of-a-kind experience with Magico, a Visual Concerto. Presented by the City of Weston and the Weston Music Society, the concert featured a unique photochoreography journey through Mexico accompanied by music performed by the renowned Symphony of the Americas. Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese directed the orchestra to music carefully choreographed to match breathtaking photos by multimedia artist Nicholas Bardonnay, the Creative Director and CEO
of Westwater Arts. Beautiful images of the people and landscapes of Mexico were perfectly timed to an original score by Grammy Award winning composer Eduardo Magallanes. The program also included Intermezzo from Goyescas by Enrique Granados, Sevilla from Suite Espagnole op. 47 by Isaac Albeniz, and Joyeuse Marche by Emmanuel Chabrier. Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation, says the evening was a treat for the more than 500 attendees who braved the weather to attend Magico, a Visual Concerto. “On a cold and rainy night, a near sell-out crowd enjoyed a wonderful performance of sight and sounds honoring the culture of Mexico. It was an evening for the senses, capped off with dessert, and one that left the audience standing in a final ovation.” Weston Music Society Co-President Andrea Burghardt credits the City of Weston for making cultural events such as this a priority. “Weston makes so many Top Ten lists. Cultural events are part of the equation which brings us these accolades. We are lucky to live in such a community and to have a City Commission and Mayor who

recognize and fully support these efforts.” Co-President Lou Marett believes the Magico concert was a superb launch “for our first concert as the Weston Music Society. This is the level of music we look forward to bringing to Weston.” The audience was definitely impressed with comments such as “amazing,” “awesome” and “outstanding” being heard following the concert. Concert-goer Diane Marett shared, “The Symphony of the Americas displayed their magic in Magico as they showcased a Latin-themed program. Audience members commented that the concert was a bridge-builder to our southern neighbor, as beautiful visual images of Mexico were projected onto three screens in choreography with the music.”

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 3/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Laurie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. adly, it seems like everyone these days has a personal connection to someone with cancer. So, as the parents of two young girls, when Rachel and Nick DiDio learned of friends who had lost a son to cancer, the couple decided to get involved with Fashion Funds the Cure, which benefits the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. “As parents, we want to help ensure no other parent suffers the loss of a child to pediatric cancer. We feel it is our responsibility to do what we can to one day find a cure,” states Rachel in explaining why she and her husband joined the 2019 Fashion Funds the Cure organizing committee. Impingement Syndromes in Dancers BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
P
ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point.” Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and
anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical therapy and a short course of anti-inflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of
the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing with proper treatment. n Carlo A. Fretting About Colonoscopy? New Prep Is Easier to Swallow. When your doctor says it’s time to schedule a colonoscopy, do you start thinking up excuses to put it off? You may be concerned about unpleasantness and inconvenience as you prepare for the exam. But it’s time to stop worrying – the prep process is much easier these days.
• Switch to clear liquids. The day before the procedure, consume only clear liquids. “It’s important to keep patients hydrated and flush the prep through the intestinal tract,” advises Dr. Maric. “The clear liquids aid in that process.”
Yes, one of the keys to a successful colonoscopy is the “clean-out” beforehand. But improvements – in the liquid you drink, the amount you must drink and the timing – make the whole process easier to swallow.
• Start the prep. Start the prep. Many physicians today prescribe a split-dose regimen, where half the prep is taken the night before and the other half in the morning. But, if the exam is in the afternoon, the prep is taken the morning of the colonoscopy.
Regular colonoscopies can save your life Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancerrelated deaths among men and the third leading cause among women in the United States. Most patients who develop colon cancer have no obvious risk factors. “The colon, itself, is a risk factor,” says Leyla Maric, MD, a gastroenterologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston maincampus. Bowel residue polyps are a precursor for Leyla Maric, MD cancer, and they can be overlooked if the colon lining is not clear of solid and liquid. “Many people fear drinking the laxative prep to cleanse the bowel more than the colonoscopy itself,” says Dr. Maric. But it’s a key part of the procedure. Three steps for a good prep: • Cut out fiber. Two days before the exam, start a low-fiber diet.
A better-tasting solution “The liquid bowel-cleansing agents now taste better and less of the liquid is consumed. This means that the prep is, quite literally, easier to swallow,” explains Dr. Maric. Those two factors, combined with the split-dose approach, improves the experience for patients. Regular colonoscopies can detect colon cancer early on. It’s important to follow your physician’s screening recommendations. To schedule a colonoscopy today, call 800.639.DOCTOR.
For an appointment with Dr. Maric or another Cleveland Clinic digestive specialist, call 800.639.DOCTOR or schedule online at ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Digestive today. Cleveland Clinic Florida accepts most major insurances.

BY MOLLY BROUSSEAU reschool is something that is becoming more of a necessity in today’s world and the decision of where to place your child can be both confusing and time consuming. Preschool offers early intervention and kindergarten readiness which are crucial in the early years of a child’s life, and this is where they will learn the vital skills needed to enter Elementary school and more importantly take them into adulthood. There are many factors to look at when choosing a preschool for your child and this can be even more difficult when you are dealing with a child who has special needs. Many preschools do not offer individualized programs for children with special needs, rather an inclusive setting where the children are placed among the rest of their typical peers. As a director, I believe in integrating students with special needs into the classrooms where they can both flourish cognitively and emotionally. Children with special needs may have a more difficult time with transition and structure and they thrive off of routine and stability that is offered in the classroom. Inclusive preschools allow these types of children to learn in an environment where they can mimic and follow the behaviors of their typical peers.

Social emotional development is also an important part of a young child’s life where they learn skills such as empathy, kindness, trust, compassion, and understanding. The best way for children to learn these skills is by seeing and applying them in real life situations. Preschool settings foster the direct need for communication and interaction between peers and adults and allow us as educators a long list of “teachable moments” inside the classroom. This is true more so for inclusion classrooms. For example, it may be easier for a typical child to learn patience and understanding when they work directly with a child with special needs, while also benefiting the child with special needs, teaching them courage and trust. In my years of experience working with both typical children and children with special needs, I have seen the joy on a child’s face when they feel they are part of a group and they belong. The process of choosing a preschool can be both time-consuming and difficult but finding the right one for your child will play a key role in their early development. Inclusive preschools improve school-readiness and social emotional skills in both typical children and children with disabilities and help to develop well-rounded individuals. n Molly Brousseau is an educator with over 14 years of experience working with young children. She graduated from FIU with her bachelor’s in Elementary Education and has worked teaching children from preschool to elementary levels. She received her directors credential and also the National Administrators Certificate and has been directing preschool for the last five years. She is currently the director at Tiny Planet preschool where she has been since it opened four years ago.

Girl Scout Silver Award Benefits Former Elementary School BY STACEY BOMSER
H
annah Epstein and Greta Reichenbach have been best friends since second grade, when they met at Manatee Bay Elementary School. For their Girl Scout Silver Award project, they decided to paint a marine life education mural at their former elementary school. According to Greta, the Silver Award project must be sustainable and long lasting, and it should impact the community by inspiring and educating people. “We wanted to create a mural at Manatee Bay because it’s a special place for us. It’s important that students understand the school’s theme and that it’s important to take care of Florida’s sea life.” It took the girls 75 hours over six months to complete the project. This included time spent meeting with Principal DeVaughn and conducting research.
“The most research we did was for the fact bubbles and reference pictures for the sea life,” notes Hannah. The enormous mural, which is located in the secondgrade area, depicts several manatees, along with sea turtles, tropical fish and other sea life. It also features fun facts such as “There are about 6,000 manatees in the wild as of 2018” and conservation messages such as “Please don’t litter. Keep my home clean!” The girls, who both consider themselves to be artists, used many of the techniques they learned during art class at Falcon Cove Middle School to paint the mural. “I love art because it gives a person a way to express themselves creatively,” shares Hannah. “You don’t necessarily have to be good at it, you just want to have fun. Art is universal and can bring people together.” The mural has certainly brought the Manatee Bay Elementary family together. The girls say they were complimented by many of their former teachers and the second graders made them a thank-you book. “Everyone was really excited and happy about the
new mural, especially the students, which makes me really happy,” adds Greta. “I’m glad they, and future second graders, can learn about manatees from the mural.” This was such a positive experience for the girls, they are already planning a second mural for the school. Greta says they are thinking about painting iconic storybook characters in the media center. Both encourage other students to do something to make a difference in the community. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, you can change your community for the better,” states Greta. Hannah adds, “If you work hard towards a goal, with enough perseverance and determination you can reach it. It doesn’t matter if the goal is personal or not, or how old you are. If you want to accomplish something, you can do it.”

Four Weston Schools Earn Five Star School Award BY STACEY BOMSER
C
ongratulations to Cypress Bay High School, Falcon Cove Middle School, Indian Trace Elementary School and Manatee Bay Elementary School on earning the Five Star School Award from the Florida Department of Education. Created by the Commissioner’s Community Involvement Council, the Five Star School Award is presented annually to schools that are committed to incorporating family and community members into the school environment to enhance student learning. In order to earn Five Star School recognition, a school must show that it has achieved 100 percent of the established criteria in five categories: community/business partnerships, family involvement, volunteerism, student community service, and school advisory councils. In addition, schools must earn a grade of “C” or higher. All four of the Weston schools earned an “A” this past year. Indian Trace Elementary Principal Amy Winder credits the community for its support of the school. “As the saying goes, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and Indian Trace Elementary feels that one of the keys to our success is the involvement of our community 54 MARCH 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
at school. We have very active business partners who allow us to host monthly Family Nights at their locations. They also serve on our School Advisory Council. We have hundreds of active parent and community volunteers who dedicate countless hours to our Media Center and classrooms to enhance the educational programs for our students.” Manatee Bay Elementary Principal Heather Hedman-Devaughn believes it’s the school culture that earned Manatee Bay this award. “We thrive on healthy partnerships, the best students, supportive families, excellent teachers and staff, and an overall united mission to reach the whole child by providing a quality education in a safe environment.” Dr. Mark Kaplan, principal of Falcon Cove Middle School, believes his school’s recognition is “a testament to the partnership we have with our parents and the community at large. Community interest and involvement in our school is a fundamental reason that we are as successful as we are. Our future is dependent on the students we serve.” In presenting the awards, Florida Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart said it was an honor to recognize the Weston schools, along with 700 other schools statewide, with the Five Star School Award. “As a former teacher and principal, I have seen firsthand the positive impact family and community involvement can have on the lives of students. When school leaders and educators engage the community, the result is higher academic achievement and more students prepared for future success.” Only 34 schools in Broward County earned the prestigious Five Star School Award for the 2017-2018 school year.

BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK he spring holiday is upon us and it is usually a busy travel season. It’s a great time to take a road trip. With more automobiles being used for vacation needs, some cars will need a basic tune-up service or possibly more extensive repairs. When repairs or service are required, it’s important for consumers to have a certain level of confidence that the work will be done correctly at a reasonable price. Be a smart, educated, consumer. Start shopping for a repair shop before repairs are actually needed. Consumers will be more likely to make a better decision if it is not rushed or in a panicked situation. When a business is selected, make sure they honor the vehicle’s warranty, if applicable. It’s always a good idea to ask friends for recommendations. Research whether the repair shop is registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) and if any complaints have been filed against the business. This can be done by using the “Business/Complaint Lookup” at 800helpfla.com. If there are complaints on file, find out how they were resolved. The State of Florida has taken steps to ensure that the consumer is protected with the registration of each business. The State also assumes the role of mediator when issues arise. Check the repair invoice carefully. Make sure the invoice includes the date, PuzzleJunction.com odometer reading, description of work performed, labor, parts (new, used, rebuilt, etc.), warranty (if applicable), and the registration number of the business (located on the certificate issued by FDACS) identifying their shop. If the service was not performed as expected give the business a chance to resolve the problem. Discuss the problem with the service manager or owner of the company. Reputable shops value customer feedback and will make a sincere effort to keep your business. A reasonable amount of time should be given to the repair shop to resolve this matter. As a consumer, if the repair work will cost more than $100, the repair shop MUST give you the option of: ▸▸ Requesting a written estimate; ▸▸ Being notified by the shop if the repair exceeds an amount you specify; or ▸▸ Not requiring a written estimate at all. You must sign and date one of the above options. Motor vehicle repair shops cannot force you to waive your right to receive an estimate. When a written estimate is requested, you must be given a copy. The repair shop must get your approval before exceeding the repair cost by more than $10 to 10 percent, whichever is greater, but not to exceed $50. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services regulates motor vehicle repair facilities in Florida. For more information, please feel free to contact the help line at 1-800-435-7352.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Best Places to Live BY DANIEL J. STERMER, MAYOR, CITY OF WESTON
N
ot only do we live in one of the best places in the nation, as ranked by MONEY in 2018, but this winter we have seen fierce weather throughout the U.S, with the rare exception of South Florida! To go along with this excellent weather, we have had a season filled with events and activities to be enjoyed throughout our parks system. I’d like to highlight additional up-coming events for you and your family: ▸▸ Weston World Fest in Regional Park on Sunday, March 3rd; ▸▸ Symphony of the Americas Outdoor Pops Concert, on Sunday, March 10th in Weston Town Center; ▸▸ Foreign Film Series presentation of The Intouchables on Monday, March 11th at AMC Weston 8 Cinema; ▸▸ WestonNights Concert featuring Jaded on Saturday, March 16th in Regional Park; ▸▸ Professional puppet show in the afternoon and Moonlight Movie in the Park at night on April 6th featuring Incredibles 2 in Regional Park; and ▸▸ Weston’s Royal Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 20th in Regional Park with over 30,000 candy-filled eggs for the taking! For details on each event, please visit our website Events Calendar at WestonFL.org/Events for these and many future happenings. Each Spring, in recognition of Earth Day on April 22nd, we offer conservation tips throughout the month of April on our City communications network. Whether you receive our eNewsletter, view our government cable television channel or follow us on Twitter @CityofWeston, we’ll have easy to implement ‘POP’ tips to help Protect Our Planet. Please join us, as little changes go a long way in making big differences. Spring brings with it increasingly longer daylight hours – which brings out more children playing and also more cyclists onto our roadways. What I am getting to here is safety using the streets. Whether you are a pedestrian out for a walk or a cyclist: use or carry lights and wear reflective clothing. Try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of a vehicle, even if you have the right-of-way, to ensure they see you. We all are in this together and need to do a better job of defensive walking/biking and being patient. There is nowhere we need to get to that is so important that it costs someone their life. Your Commission and staff got an earlier than usual start on the budget process this year, with a Workshop in late January. Usually I mention how the budget is the single most important determination the City Commission votes on each year, as it impacts every property owner in our City. This year, we will also be making an equally important decision when selecting a City Manager to replace our current Manager, John Flint, who will be retiring after a stellar 23-year career managing Weston’s growth and infrastructure. We hope that everyone enjoys the upcoming Passover and Easter holidays and for students looking forward to Spring Break, both here and those away at college, have fun and be safe.

Gator Run Students and Parents Collaborate to Crack Codes BY STACEY BOMSER
G
ator Run Elementary School turned its media center into a makeshift escape room for 5th Grade’s Breaking Out. The event allowed parents and students to work together to solve puzzles using clues and cyphers. By collaborating to crack the clues, teams discovered a four-digit “break out code”. According to Fifth Grade Team Leader Angela Davis, players worked collaboratively to solve many differ-
ent types of codes such as ciphers, Morse code, cryptograms, and a final four-digit combination. “The codes required participants to think outside the box to decipher or decode them. For example, most codes required critical thinking to determine what a letter or symbol stands for.” In addition to fostering team work and practicing hands-on problem solving, the escape room game

provided an opportunity for both students and parents to learn from modern-day innovators and influencers. “The clues required participants to closely read information about famous individuals who have been successful due to their growth
mindset way of thinking. These individuals included Ellen DeGeneres, Michael Phelps, J.K. Rowling and Mark Zuckerberg,” explains Ms. Davis. “To solve the clues, participants had to dig deeper into some of their most famous inspirational growth mindset quotes.” 5th Grade’s Breaking Out was specifically planned as a family event for parents and students to work together. Ms. Davis says both groups seemed to really enjoy the program. “Parents and students were equally excited when they ‘broke out’ and were able to identify the fourdigit code.”

Prenatal Oral Care and Your Child BY DR. MARIA MARANZINI-GROSMAN hat does your personal oral care have to do with your newborn? More than you think. Unaware of its importance, many women avoid regular dental care during and immediately after pregnancy. In addition, uneducated dentists may not stress its importance and may even be less willing to provide certain services during pregnancy. This is very unfortunate for there are definite implications of poor oral health in pregnant women, their pregnancies, as well as their children. Multiple studies have shown links between periodontal disease (infection of the gums and bones supporting the teeth) and adverse outcomes in pregnancy including preterm deliveries, low birth weight babies, and preeclampsia. Children born to mothers with poor oral hygiene and high levels of certain oral bacteria have a significantly higher risk of developing cavities at an early age. This may be one of the causative factors in a child’s development of a condition called early childhood caries or ECC. ECC is a complicated situation in which cavities occur rampantly at an age in which needed care may be difficult to deliver. Fortunately, most of the causes of both cavities and ECC are preventable. Cavities are caused in large part by having high levels of certain oral bacteria. Although children are not born with these cavity causing bacteria, they are eventually transferred by caregivers to children. This can occur, for example, by blowing on a hot spoon of cereal. It is not natural, or possible, to forever eliminate these bacteria. However, the longer it takes to transfer, the decreased risk of cavities in general and ECC specifically. The way of accomplishing this would be to eliminate cavities in the mouths of mothers (and all caregivers for that matter) and reduce the amount of plaque through regular dental checkups, cleaning and application of topical fluoride (in toothpaste and rinse). It would be easiest to complete all dental work prior to pregnancy. However, it is important to keep in mind that most dental procedures can be accomplished during pregnancy. The safest and most comfortable time to accomplish dental work during pregnancy is the second trimester. We recommend using this time not only to receive services, but also to obtain tips for oral care for mother and baby. There are many special circumstances during pregnancy. For example, nausea and vomiting can create some difficulty in controlling the acid levels in the mouth, which can increase the risks of both enamel erosion as well as cavities in mother. You would be surprised at the creative strategies which can be used to overcome many of these challenges.

Dr. Diana Torres to our practice!
f you want to live a longer, healthier life, one of the areas that must be address is hormonal balance. As people begin to age, it is common to see a decline in hormone production that affects vitality, energy and sex drive. But hormone imbalances are not an exclusive condition affecting older people. We can also see it in younger people due to stress, intense exercise, excessive dieting and many other factors. What is important to understand is that the human body cannot function properly if there is a hormonal imbalance. Hormones are responsible for regulating the brain, thyroid, adrenal glands, reproductive organs and so much more. Adequate levels of hormones are vital for both men and women. Because they are so critical, it is important that patients work with an expert in this field. Traditional doctors prescribe hormones to patients who are deficient but may fail to look at other areas, such as medical history and lifestyle, which may be contributing to the problem. This is where the functional medicine approach comes in. At Bellissimo Medical, for example, we have developed the Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Program as a unique way to balance hormones safely and effectively. This comprehensive program requires that we focus on the individual as a whole and evaluate their immune system, metabolism, and inflammatory markers before recommending treatment. A specialist will not only look at the patient’s needs, but also determine if a patient’s body is ready for hormone replacement and create an individualized program with the right dosing. The type of hormones used in this process is also critical. Hormone replacement therapy can be done with synthetic hormones or bio-identical hormones. Synthetic hormones are made from horses’ urine and are much less popular nowadays because there is a better option available. Today we are able to create bio-identical hormones by extracting natural substances from plants that act as “real” hormones inside your body. These hormones, also known as natural hormones, have the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by the human body. Because these are naturally occurring substances that are found in us all, they produce the same physiologic response and there are virtually no side effects. Bio-identical hormones can be delivered via pills, creams and pellets. A specialist will recommend the best treatment option for each patient’s unique situation. The most physiologic way of administration is via pellet therapy, because the hormone levels are maintained constant without the peaks and troughs seen with the other methods. Pellet therapy is delivered by placing the hormones directly under the skin allowing the body to access the hormones when in need. Coupled with a good exercise program, proper nutrition and vitamins, bringing your hormones back to adequate levels is the best way to improve quality of life and avoid disease as shown by recent research. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Manatee Bay Fifth Graders Participate in Penguin Encounter BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents in Lisa Weingartner’s fifth grade gifted class at Manatee Bay Elementary took part in a unique penguin encounter. Using Skype, the students were able to talk to a scientist stationed in Antarctica studying penguins. As part of the science curriculum, Mrs. Weingartner is teaching her students about climate zones, adaptations, diversity and the evolution of living things. To help bring the lesson to life and make it more memorable and authentic, she arranged a Skype call to Jean Pennycook. She is the Penguin Science Education and Outreach Specialist on a National Science Foundation project to study Adelie penguins on Ross Island in Antarctica. To prepare for the Skype session, students conducted research on Adelie penguins. Working in groups, they researched life cycle, diet, physical features and adaptations the penguins needed in order to survive in their harsh environment. Pennycook spoke about the research she is doing and then answered questions from the students about her experience living in Antarctica and

the life of the Adelie penguins. According to Mrs. Weingartner, “The students were fully engaged and didn’t realize they were learning because it was ‘so much fun’.” The students were able to see the penguin’s natural habitat with penguins sitting on their eggs to protect them from predators and the climate. Pennycook explained that while most penguins live in warm climates, the Adelie penguins are one of only a few species to live in a cold climate. “The students were intrigued by how close she was able to get to the Adelie penguins since they have no fear of humans,” explains Mrs. Weingartner. “They also enjoyed seeing Antarctica live, as it’s a place very few get to see.” Student Dylan Wheeler says he was impressed with how Pennycook was able to approach the penguins, noting he saw her boot next to one of the nests. He was amused by a penguin running around stealing rocks from other penguins to use to build its own nest. Mrs. Weingartner says she chose to have her class study penguins because of their cute factor. “I also

hope to instill the importance of taking care of our environment and how what we do affects all parts of our world.” The Skype call with Jean Pennycook was just one of many Mrs. Weingartner arranges for her class. “I try to incorporate Skype calls as much as I can. It is important for the students to know the world is bigger than they are. I want them to be global, compassionate human beings.”

Country Isles Elementary Community Supports Kids Book Exchange BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents at Country Isles Elementary School are sharing their love of reading with children in Fort Lauderdale. The school has started a book drive to support the Kids Book Exchange, which promotes the importance of reading and distributes free children’s books. Literacy Coach Barbara McDermott is spearheading this schoolwide community outreach
program. Country Isles families and faculty are being asked to donate new or slightly used books to the Kids Book Exchange. Within the first month of the project, the school collected more than 250 books. The book drive will continue throughout the remainder of the school year. “Teachers, families and communities share the responsibility of ensuring that every child becomes a competent reader and writer,” explains Ms. McDermott. “The Kids Book Exchange helps us support and encourage reading at home by providing books to children and families at various locations within the community.” The Kids Book Exchange is an initiative of the Fort Lauderdale Reads program, a multifaceted early literacy program created by the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club, Rotary Community Corps, City of Fort Lauderdale and community stakeholders. The project distributes books at free giveaways and stocks Little Free Libraries and Reading Corners at community centers throughout Fort Lauderdale. Ms. McDermott says getting books into the

t Indian Trace Elementary School, students want to come to school early. For years, the MakerSpace in the Media Center has been a popular destination, allowing children to create, invent and learn. This year the school added a Music MakerSpace where students can play instruments and create their own music. Music Teacher Linda Saver spearheaded the Music MakerSpace project. It offers students in third through fifth grade the opportunity to practice and play. “We offer the recorder for third grade, the guitar for fourth grade, and the ukulele for fifth grade,” shares Mrs. Saver, who teaches students how to play and properly handle the instruments. She says the program has been extremely popular, with children coming to school as early as 7:20am to get time in the Music MakerSpace. “They love to come in the morning and practice.” Fourth grader Avery Presser is one of the many students who look forward to mornings 78 MARCH 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
in the Music MakerSpace. “I’m allowed to follow my passion of music in the beginning of the day.” Classmate Sophia Cumberbatch agrees. “It gives me an opportunity in the morning to play and experience music before school starts.” Although students do take part in Music as a Specials course, where they learn to play instruments, the Music MakerSpace provides extra time and exposure to musical instruments, which Mrs. Saver says is important, especially for elementary age students. “Music stimulates their creativity and helps with their reading and math.” For those children with more academic interests, Media Specialist Dione Mila runs the MakerSpace each morning. “Kids rush to get here and get to their favorite center first. Students come in to take advantage of the various activities, use the computers to Code, check out books, and most importantly, learn something new.” The Media Center MakerSpace features a chess center, circuit lab, games tables and much more.

It helps students acquire knowledge of the reading process, increase vocabulary, develop language and reading skills, and increase overall reading achievement. Research has shown that one of the best predictors of student’s reading achievement is the amount of time they spend reading independently.” The recipients of these book donations are not the only ones who will benefit from this community outreach program. According to Ms. McDermott, “Through this project, students, parents, faculty and staff of Country Isles Elementary exhibit core character traits of cooperation and kindness as we reach out and give back to others.”

Practice Adds Up to Success for Falcon Cove Math Club BY STACEY BOMSER
T
his has been a stellar year so far for the Falcon Cove Middle School Math Club. Not only is membership at an all time high, with 146 members, but the team has performed exceptionally well in tournaments taking home countless trophies and titles. “The math club is open to any student who is passionate about mathematics,” states Math Club Sponsor Kami McLaughlin, who encourages interested students to join the club. “Not only is it fun but it helps students academically. Competing in math competitions helps to develop and improve problem solving and critical thinking skills.” To prepare for competition, Mrs. McLaughlin says

the math club members practice problems from previous competitions, either individually or in groups. “Often they will learn skills that have not been taught yet in their math classes.” The team has had some amazing accomplishments so far this year including the Algebra II team winning second place at the Rickards High School Mu Alpha Theta competition. But its biggest achievement was definitely making it to the Final Four in Math Madness, a nationwide math competition. Falcon Cove was among the top ten schools in the country, ranking seventh place. Eighth grader Shaarva Selvan ranked 17th in the nation. “The students worked so hard to get to that point. There are some amazing schools that compete in that competition. Our students look at the stats of the kids from other schools and use that as motivation to work hard and reach that level,” explains Mrs. McLaughlin. “They do not shy away when they meet strong competition. Our goal for next year is to make it to the final round.”
While that will have to wait until next year’s Math Madness, the Falcon Cove math team is currently preparing for several upcoming competitions including Mu Alpha Theta at Cypress Bay and American Heritage – Boca Delray this month, as well as the BCCTM competition at Indian Ridge Middle School. On campus, the team is participating in the Math Olympiad, which is held once a month from November through March. Last month, the team competed at Math Counts County and a Mu Alpha Theta tournament in Riviera Beach. “These students are an amazing group with a passion and gift for mathematics,” shares Mrs. McLaughlin. “They are truly dedicated and enthusiastic about competitions and developing their mathematical thinking skills.”

T
he Weston Rotary Club supports a number of local charities. A charity recently adopted by the Weston Rotary Club is The Jubilee Center. It started as a church soup kitchen in 1984 and in 1995 joined forces with three other congregations to form the Jubilee Center. This enabled the organization to expand its
services to the poor and homeless in the Hollywood area. The non-profit Center was recently voted “Agency of the Year “ by the Volunteer Broward organization. Here are the services and programs that the Jubilee Center provides: week day soup kitchen, Pantry Bags of Food (for families and singles), WalkAround-Bag (food for the homeless), personal hygiene items, clothing, Jubilee ID (also help getting State photo ID), legal aid, DCF ACCESS Partner (food stamps and Medicaid), Veteran’s assistance, services and shelter information, distribution of mail, and health screenings (HIV/AIDS, blood sugar, blood pressure). The Rotary Club of Weston recently spent the day preparing the Jubilee Center dining room for a total repaint and window covering replacement. This entailed preparing all surfaces for new paint, patching and sanding the walls, and then “cutting in” the room to expedite the finish painting on
Sunday by volunteers from the Temple Solel. The club has also donated monies to replace broken windows at the center and purchase and install ceramic tile in the center’s bathroom. How Do I Know If My Eyes Have Allergies? BY DR. JANE THERRIEN s we are in the midst of allergy season, many people may be noticing that they are sneezing a little more, constantly blowing their nose, or even itching their skin. Not only do allergies affect your body, but they can also affect your eyes. But how do you know if you have eye allergies, also called allergic conjunctivitis? Well, it’s much more common than you would think. These allergies occur when your eyes react to something that irritates them (called an allergen). They produce a substance called histamine to fight off the allergen. As a result, the eyelids and conjunctiva become red, swollen and itchy. The eyes can tear and burn. The good news is that, unlike other kinds of conjunctivitis, allergic conjunctivitis is not spread from person to person. Who has eye allergies? People who have eye allergies usually have nasal allergies as well, with an itchy, stuffy nose and sneezing. It is usually a temporary condition associated with seasonal allergies. You can get eye allergies from pet dander, dust, pollen, smoke, perfumes, or even foods. If you cannot avoid the cause, your allergies can be more severe. You can have significant burning and itching and even sensitivity to light. The most common eye allergy symptoms include: red eyes, swollen eyes, itchy eyes, burning of the eyes, tearing of the eyes, or sensitivity to light. Most of these symptoms gradually begin as opposed to a sudden onset. If accompanied by nasal allergies, you may also have a stuffy, itchy nose and sneezing. You can also have a headache, an itchy or sore throat or coughing. What causes these eye allergies? An allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts to an allergen that is normally harmless. When an allergen comes in contact with your eye, certain cells within your eye (called mast cells) release histamine and other substances to fight off the allergen. This reaction causes your eyes to become red, itchy and watery. Allergens in the air — both indoors and out — cause many eye allergies. Allergic reactions to perfume, cosmetics or drugs can also cause the eyes to have an allergic response. Some people may be allergic to the preservative chemicals in lubricating eye drops or prescribed eye drops. They should use preservativefree drops instead if possible. Sometimes, the eyes can react to other allergens that don’t necessarily come in direct contact with the eye. These can include specific foods or insect bites or stings. How do you treat eye allergies? The best thing to do is to consult your eye doctor. There are many options to help relieve eye allergies from over the counter medications to prescriptions for more severe conditions.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Divorcing After 12/31/18 BY EVAN BARON eading up to the end of 2018, there was a race not to the Courthouse but out of it. Spouses who had already filed for divorce, whether recently or those who had long pending cases, and who would be responsible for paying alimony were actively racing to finalize their cases prior to the end of the year. The reason: the changes to the tax code implemented by the 2017 tax law. For decades, a long-standing staple of alimony negotiations was the subsidizing effect of payments that were tax deductible to the paying spouse and taxable as income to the spouse receiving alimony. This dynamic helped facilitate negotiations that are often difficult for the parties, both financially and emotionally. Previously, the deductible nature of alimony incentivized a paying spouse to agree to a larger number because doing so would result in a tax benefit down the road for the length of the alimony award. This was especially useful when trying to reconcile each spouse’s perception and preference as to what number was fair and reasonable based on the couples’ particular circumstances. Individuals seeking to dissolve their marriage in a post 2018 landscape will be some of the first to experience negotiations that exclude this useful incentive. However, it is important to keep in mind that while the paying spouse will no longer have the option to deduct their alimony payment, the spouse receiving the alimony award will no longer have to claim these funds as income. Previously, a rationale for asking for a higher alimony award was due to alimony being taxable to the receiving spouse. This meant that the number agreed to on paper, depending on the individual’s tax bracket, could constitute a very different net amount once taxes were considered. Under the new tax code, the number agreed to will be the amount that will be paid to the receiving spouse. There is no longer an ambiguity as to what these funds will look like at the end of the year. It is possible that this dynamic too may rise to be a useful aspect of the new tax laws when spouses are negotiating the topic of alimony. The 2017 Tax Law brought with it several changes that will reverberate in countless ways across all economic classes of individuals. The same is true when applied in the legal arena of family law. The deductible/taxable nature of alimony was not the only change to come about. For example, the new tax law has eliminated the previously existing exemption for dependents, while also increasing the child tax credit. It is important for individuals considering divorce to educate themselves about the new changes and, prior to seeking legal counsel for their dissolution of marriage, speak to an Accountant, financial advisor or requisite professional to gain awareness of any resulting implications in order to determine what financial strategy is best suited for his or her circumstances. Doing so will alleviate the stress of the unknown and will assist individuals seeking divorce in providing their Family Law attorney with information necessary to help accomplish the financial goals a spouse hopes to attain in their family case.

How to Grip a Golf Club Correctly BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL he golf grip is often overlooked when trying to cure a slice or any other problem with a shot for that matter. Knowing the correct way to grip a golf club could help you see an end to your hooks and slices and have you on your way to a lower handicap. One thing I often see when people have problems with their grip is they tend to hold it too much in their palm. Gripping the golf club too much in the palm leads to a loss of wrist action, which is a great source of power. Limiting the wrist action will lead to a loss of power and feel in the golf club. The fingers are the most sensitive parts of our hands. Placing the golf club more in the fingers than the palms results in an increased amount of wrist hinge, which means longer tee shots and more feel. You don’t have to grip it hard to hit it hard! So many times, I see people choking their clubs to death to try and hit it longer. In actual fact gripping the club this hard can seriously decrease the distance you get on your shots. The Vardon grip is a popular way of holding the golf club and it is seen as a proper golf grip for distance. Many pros use this grip today, but it was made popular by a golfer known as Harry Vardon way back at the turn of the 20th century. This golf grip is taught by many professional golf instructors to beginners, and it’s ideal for getting players to grip the club in their fingers rather than their palms. To use the Vardon grip, all you do is overlap the pinky of your trailing hand (in a right-handed golfer’s case, the right hand is the trailing hand) and place it between the middle and index finger of the lead hand (which is the left for a right-handed golfer). The lead hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the trailing hand. This works especially well for players with large hands. Make sure that when looking down at address, you can see the first two knuckles of your left hand and a “V” formed between the thumb and forefinger pointing toward your right shoulder. With the right hand, have the “V” pointing toward your chin or slightly to the right shoulder. Trust me, this works! This Interlock grip literally locks the hands together, but the golfer also runs the risk of having the handle stray into the palms of the hands. People with medium sized hands, weak forearms and wrists, and beginners in many cases prefer this style of grip. To apply the interlocking grip, you start off by taking the little finger on the trailing hand (the trailing hand is the right hand for right handed golfers) and intertwine it with the index finger on the lead hand. The lead hand’s thumb should fit perfectly into the lifeline of the trailing hand. In every sport, physical strength and conditioning are important to succeed. Golf is no different. Strong forearms and wrists are essential for golf success and they play a huge part in developing a proper golf grip.

ASK THE EXPERT
Do Your Eyes Make You Look Tired? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he eyes are the first thing we notice when we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. Perhaps people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep, because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts,” also known as blepharoplasty. A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Removing this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour. For those patients with puffiness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes. The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch”, no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation. Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery. If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. HEALTH & WELLNESS
Basic Rules for Healthy Golf BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER hether you are a seasoned veteran of the fairway or golf novice, a pro or fair-weather weekend warrior, back pain, shoulder pain, or some other golf-induced injury will seriously impair your game at least once during your life. Most golf injuries are the result of one or more of the following: ▸▸ repetitive overuse of particular muscles ▸▸ sudden overdemand of underprepared muscles ▸▸ poor or high-risk technique. Overuse Unlike many sports, golf involves a specific, consistent, unilateral action. Beginners and experienced golfers alike often suffer from repetitive strain and microtrauma associated with performing the same golf swing, using the same side of the body, innumerable times over the course of a game, tournament or practice. One of the common mistakes we all make is failing to read or choosing to ignore the warning signs that the body has had enough: muscle stiffness, tenderness, pain upon movement or stretch, and so on. If you feel these warning signs, postpone the game for another day. Overdemand Speed and power are essential components of the golf swing. Many golf injuries occur because key muscles are asked to perform maximally when they are unprepared to do so. These muscles may be already irritated from repetitive strain, being inadequately warmed-up, or otherwise weak, tight, shortened or fatigued. The result is the same: muscle strains, protective spasms, “locked” spinal joints. Poor Technique In an attempt to drive the ball farther, many golfers use enormous backswings, trunk rotations and follow-throughs. They do so at their peril. The typical golf swing subjects the lumbar spine to 98% of its maximum rotation, and an incredible 100% of its maximum lateral flexion. X-ray studies have shown the long-term result is significant degenerative changes, predominantly rightsided, in the lumbar spines of most seasoned golfers. Many golf injuries can be avoided, and your game improved, by observing these rules: 1. Warm-up properly before playing. This means raise your heart-rate, increase circulation in the major muscle groups, and then gently stretch. Get Loose! 2. Prepare your body for golf season. Learn the “Super Six” golf stretches and make them part of your life. Develop better abdominal strength. Get Fit! 3. Ensure the key muscle groups and joints of your spine and pelvis are healthy and functioning optimally. Your chiropractor specializes in assessment and correction of muscle and joint function. Get Checked! 4. Practice and perfect low-risk golf technique. This is as simple as reducing your backswing and follow-through 25%, minimizing trunk rotation by keeping your hips/shoulders parallel, avoiding lateral bending, especially during follow-through, bending the knees when addressing the ball, and maintaining tight abdominal control during the power portion of the swing. Get Trained! 5. Listen to your body. Get Smart!
