South Florida Takes Pride in Historic Significance

O

n an early April day, a bit more than 500 years ago, Spanish Explorer Ponce De Leon landed near what is now Saint Augustine and claimed it for the Spanish crown. He subsequently sailed down the east coast surveying the land in what is now Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. It is amazing how far we’ve come since those fateful days. At the time of Ponce De Leon’s arrival, the only residents of South East Florida were a Native American tribe known as the Tequesta. The region’s total population at the time is estimated to have been between 800 and a few thousand inhabitants. The population remained largely unchanged for the next 400 years. Shortly after its founding, Broward County had a population just over 5,000 people and consisted mostly of uninhabitable wetlands. Today, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties are home to more than five million people; few areas in the world have grown faster over the past century. We have the fifth and sixth largest school districts in the United States. The region also boasts a vibrant economy and diverse culture. The area’s rapid growth and unique climate have brought unique challenges: Will we be able to continue to create jobs for continued immigration and the maturation of the huge population of school-aged kids? How will we manage rising sea levels in a region so dependent on tourism? Can we continue to integrate the varied backgrounds and perspectives of residents and newcomers? How can we guarantee freedom and safety for all? We are optimistic. South Florida is a young, dynamic region that has solved difficult problems in the past and will do it again in the future. Our brightest days are still ahead. We, for our part, are proud to be part of this community and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Sincerely,

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, ne needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

Candlelight Remembrance Honors Parkland Victims BY STACEY BOMSER

T

ears fell along with raindrops as the community gathered at Weston Regional Park for a candlelight remembrance to honor the victims of the tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The touching ceremony showed our community’s support for the students, families, teachers, staff and residents of Parkland and Coral Springs who were impacted by this tragedy.

Mayor Daniel Stermer was joined on stage by City Commissioners Tom Kallman, Toby Feuer, Byron Jaffe and Margaret Brown, along with State Representative Richard Stark. The guest of honor was Parkland Mayor Christine Hunschofsky, who shared her heartfelt sentiments. Several Weston students also participated, holding banners reading #MSDStrong and #ParklandStrong to show their support for their peers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. One of the more moving moments of the night was when Samantha Rosenberg,

a member of the Cypress Bay Student Government Association, delivered an impassioned speech reflecting how the tragedy personally impacted her, her fellow students at Cypress Bay High School, and her family. She shared her desire not to live in fear and her hope that her generation will be remembered for making a difference, taking a stand, and speaking up for what they believe in. The program concluded with a performance of John Lennon’s Imagine by Marisol Dow, creative/musical director of the Inside Out Theatre Company. As candles were lit, the names of the victims were scrolled on screen followed by a moment of silence. Afterwards, The Petty Hearts rallied the crowd with a passionate performance of I Won’t Back Down, Free Fallin’ and other Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classics. The national Tom Petty tribute show concluded the WestonNights Concert Series.

Community Called to Take a “Stand” Against Gun Violence BY STACEY BOMSER

T

hree Weston families are calling on the community to join them on Sunday, April 8th, in taking a stand against gun violence by hosting a lemonade stand to benefit non-violence advocacy groups. “This Lemonade is Taking a Stand” is spearheaded by Karen Birke, Karen Brown and Jamie Horwitz, along with their children, Hannah and Jacob Birke, Chloe and Ethan Brown, and Zoe and Ella Horwitz, who all attend Everglades Elementary School. “Our girls have always organized lemonade stands to raise money to help charities,” explains Birke. “Following the tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, they decided to do a lemonade stand to benefit Moms Demand Action, an organization to stop gun violence.” In just two hours the kids raised $800. It was then that they realized that by mobilizing more children to hold lemonade stands, they could take a greater stand against gun violence. “We want this to go beyond Weston,” states Birke. “We want every single kid across the country to do a lemonade stand in their neighborhood and donate 20 APRIL 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM

their proceeds to Moms Demand Action or a gun violence prevention organization of their choice.” Like the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students who are leading #NeverAgain, a nationwide movement advocating for tighter regulations to prevent gun violence, fifth grader Hannah Birke believes children can initiate change. “The children are the future so if I want to live in a nonviolent world, then it’s my job to fight for it. You can’t underestimate the

power of children’s voices.” Birke says she and her friends are proud of their children and what they are doing to empower other young children to take action. “Many kids have been left shell-shocked and feel scared and helpless. They may not be able to articulate their feelings as eloquently as older children, but many of them are hurting and feel anxious about being in school. We want to inspire people to use this opportunity to help their kids feel useful and part of the cause.” You and your family can join the “This Lemonade is Taking a Stand” movement on April 8th. Birke says participants are asked to record their event and how much money was raised on the group’s website. While they are supporting Moms Demand Action, a powerful grassroots network of mothers founded after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, lemonade stand participants are welcome to contribute to any nonviolence organization. “Empower our children. Model social activism. Help everyone heal,” states Birke. “Let our politicians know, ‘This lemonade is taking a stand!” To learn more visit www.thislemonadeistakingastand.com.

Weston Rallies for Relay For Life BY STACEY BOMSER

“W

hen You Wish Upon a Cure” is the theme of this year’s Relay For Life of Weston, which takes place April 21st-22nd at the Cypress Bay High School track. The Disney-themed event is appropriate because magical memories are made at Relay. It’s an uplifting night when the entire community comes together to support the American Cancer Society’s signature event and fundraiser. Money raised through Relay supports programs for research, education, advocacy and service; programs that can reduce cancer deaths and incidence and improve the quality of life for those touched by cancer. Weston Relay Chair Jennifer Clark-Reich says this year’s goal is to raise $180,000. “Last year, Weston was the #1 Relay in Broward and the #6 Relay in Florida and we’re hoping to do even better this year.” Relay For Life of Weston is well on its way thanks to the efforts of teams such as Ultimate Software, which raised more than $160,000 last year alone and has collected about $100,000 in donations so far this year. In recognition of its enormous fundraising efforts, the American Cancer Society honored Ultimate Software with its Relay For Life Hero of Research Award. A three-year extramural research grant, named the Reuben ‘Papa’ Scherr Memorial Grant in honor of the CEO’s father who passed away last year from liver cancer, will fund research specific to liver

cancer at Duke University Medical Center. In addition to teams like Ultimate Software, Clark-Reich says this year’s Relay has more schools participating than ever before. She says teams are really getting into the Disney theme with plans for tents based on popular Disney movies such as The Lion King, Finding Nemo and The Little Mermaid. She encourages people to dress up for the occasion and envisions plenty of pretty princesses and cute costumed characters. Relay For Life begins with the Survivors’ Dinner at 5pm followed by the kick-off ceremony at 6pm emceed by TV celebrity Jen Herrera. The actual relay starts with the Survivors’ Victory Lap, which will be led by the Broward Sheriff’s Office pink breast cancer awareness vehicle followed by cancer survivors carrying the Relay banner. Afterward, supporters and teammates will join in walking in relay fashion around the track throughout the night. The Kids Zone, sponsored by Weston Town Center, will be open until about 8:30pm. At 9pm, all Relay participants gather for the Luminaria ceremony, which honors those who

continue to fight cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease. As has become a Weston Relay tradition, a bagpiper will play as participants walk a silent lap around the track lit only by decorated bags with candles. The evening then continues with games, live music, performances by local dance studios, and Zumba and yoga classes. Weston Relay concludes Sunday morning with the Fight Back Ceremony. That’s when everyone walks the final lap together in a pledge to take action and spread awareness about cancer research, treatment and prevention. Weston YMCA Family Center Hosts Healthy Kids Day BY STACEY BOMSER

G

et a head start on summer fun at Healthy Kids Day at the Weston YMCA Family Center on Saturday, April 21st. The free community event is a chance for children and parents to explore the many opportunities available at the Y this summer to keep kids’ minds and bodies active. “Healthy Kids Day is part of a national Y initiative to improve health and well-being for children and families,” explains Tongelia Milton, executive director of communications for YMCA of South Florida. “It will feature activities such as Y-Fit games and arts and crafts, as well as educational information on nutrition and healthy living designed to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.” Milton says it’s important to keep kids active, especially during the summer months. “Research shows that children gain weight two to three times faster during the summer vacation than during the school year. The Y wants to help them stay active and continue learning through our summer programs which have

health and educational components.” The Y promotes family fun and fitness during the summer months. It encourages families to step away from the TV or computer screen and spend time outdoors, engaging in playful activity together for at least an hour a day. At Healthy Kids Day, children can enroll in the Y-Fit youth well-

ness program, which combines fun and active play. Physical activity is a large component of the Y’s summer camp programs. Families can learn more about the many options available to all ages from preschool through high school. There will also be demonstrations from some of the Y’s new camps. “Our new summer camp programs are designed

to keep kids learning and active this summer,” shares Milton. “We are offering programs from sports, aquatics, art and science to fitness, performances, leadership training and making new friends. Children can even explore some of South Florida’s natural habitats where they go fishing, canoeing, and see marine life.” Milton is confident the Y’s new two-week camp programs will appeal to busy families as well as children wishing to explore different activities. “Our new two-week Performing Arts, STEM, Teen Camps, and more will give kids an opportunity to do more of what they love.” Healthy Kids Day is a great way to figure out exactly what your child wants to do this summer. Just because school is out doesn’t mean learning needs to stop. According to Milton, “The Y supports families in their efforts to teach healthy habits and keep kids active and learning, preparing them for a brighter future. It’s part of the Y’s promise to strengthen the communities we serve.” Join the Weston Y for Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 21st from 10am to 1pm. The Weston YMCA Family Center is located in Weston Regional Park. For more information visit www.ymcasouthflorida.org.

Student Artist Showcase Shines Spotlight on Talented Young Artists BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he 12th annual Student Artist Showcase is on display this month at the Weston Branch Library. The event, which is sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Weston, features original artwork created by Weston students. “We anticipate over 228 works of art to highlight the variety of medium and subject matter done so masterfully by these young artists,” states Student Artist Showcase Chair Gryselle Machiote. “There is no greater joy than that of a student’s pride and joy when their talents are being recognized and celebrated.” Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation, agrees. “The Student Artist Showcase is an excellent opportunity for a child’s creativity to go on display in a public setting. In most cases, this is the first time a child has had that experience and it is such an honor to see how the kids respond to that recognition.” All of the students are recognized during an artists’ reception, at which time

prizes are awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each of five grade categories, from kindergarten through 12th grade. High school winners will receive a cash prize, while elementary and middle school winners will get a gift certificate to a local art store. Art teachers from all of Weston’s public and private schools are invited to submit ten to twelve pieces of art reflecting the best from their students’ art activities. All mediums are accepted and, in the past, have included drawing, painting, photography, and collage. Art Teacher Jennifer Brittingham, from Imagine Charter School of Weston, is a strong supporter of the Student Artist Showcase. “The show is spectacular! My students and their parents are always very impressed with it.” Arts Council President Jami Nix Rahn says it is one of her favorite programs of the year and encourages the Weston community to stop by the library to admire the impressive artwork. “Each year it brings the Weston Branch Library to life with an explosion of creativity, color and thought-provoking works of art.” The Student Artist Showcase exhibit is open during regular Weston Branch Library hours and runs through April 26th. It is free and open to all library patrons.

ell over 2,000 people joined together in celebrating our community’s cultural diversity at the third annual Weston World Fest. It offered 20 interactive country booths, onstage performances, and authentic international cuisine. “Weston is the melting pot of the world. This beautiful event brings all cultures together,” stated Weston City Commissioner Tom Kallman. “Sports, Health and Fitness,” was the theme of this year’s Weston World Fest, with each country booth featuring youth activities focused on sports. At the Venezuela booth activities included a pillowcase sack race on a path of dominos. The Russian booth introduced children to lapta, a 700-year-old game similar to bowling. This was the first year Russia was featured at Weston World Fest. Anna Maslakova Herring enjoyed sharing her country’s culture and history with event-goers. The country booth featured a display of Russia’s famous nesting dolls and information on its astronaut program. A Russian dance group was one of the event’s featured entertainers. Guests were also treated to performances by Japanese Taiko drummers, colorfullydressed dancers representing different Latin American countries, a Mexican mariachi band, African dancers, as well as a Chinese dragon performance and Chinese

fan choreography. The event concluded with an interactive performance by Bollywood dancers. Guests could also sample cuisine from around the world, with tastes of Japan, Spain, India, Germany, Mexico and Italy provided by local restaurants. The Weston Sports Expo was another welcome addition to this year’s program. It featured exhibits from local sports organizations and businesses. Children enjoyed the inflatable sports challenge. Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation, says the 2018 Weston World Fest set new standards. “This is the greatest turnout we have had. We all appreciate the volunteer effort it takes to make this wonderful event happen.” Weston World Fest Chair Carol Lema credits volunteers from the various participating countries in bringing this international experience to our community. “I’m passionate about and fascinated by international travel and culture. If Weston World Fest inspires one person to travel, learn a language, try new foods or simply appreciate cultural performances, we have done our job.” Weston World Fest was presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston. This year’s event was supported in part by the Broward County Cultural Division through its Cultural Incentive Program.

New Trends in 2018 BY ROSE SKLAR

Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Reverse The Signs of Aging

T

here is a new trend in town. It is called walkability. Today’s savvy buyer is focused on a healthier lifestyle. People of all ages recognize the benefits and convenience of reduced time spent driving by having shopping, restaurants, recreation and public transportation at their fingertips. The two biggest groups driving the demand for housing according to the NAR (National Association of Realtors, 2017) are the millennials at 56% followed by the baby boomers at 45%. Both groups are overwhelmingly in favor of walkability, bikeability, and a healthier lifestyle. Many new businesses are relocating to communities with these new needs in mind. Fortune 500 companies are eyeing walkable urban areas to attract an educated young workforce.

So, what makes a community walkable? Nature, open space, resort style amenities, culture, world class education, security, fitness, hospitals. Here are some fun statistics: If it is walkable, people will spend more money. Why this new trend? People are tired of being chained to their car. They are looking to simplify. They prefer to walk to the grocery, pharmacy, restaurants, coffee shops and more. From baby boomers to millennials, this is a must have today. Weston has much to offer in this category. Sidewalks are found in almost every community. Bike lanes are designated on all of our roads. Most of our neighborhoods are walking distance to either a school, restaurant or park with another plus: WiFi capability. Of course, there are always other options. Going vertical is a new craze in South Broward. Urban parks are on the rise. A big focus is being placed on creating pedestrian environments, many of which are pet friendly. New up and coming luxury rentals are popping up all over Fort Lauderdale and as far west as Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, particularly interesting is Metropica. Fort Lauderdale is also experiencing a resurgence with the new Brightline train in town. It will transport riders from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, with the final destination one day reaching Orlando. Weston Climbs Safest City Ranking Charts BY STACEY BOMSER

W

eston has been named the #8 Safest City in the United States by the real estate website Neighborhood Scout. Our city is quickly scaling the ranks; just last year Weston was ranked #24. The rankings are based on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Weston was one of only three Florida cities to make the list. In addition, for the second year in a row, Weston has been ranked as the #2 Safest City in Florida by the National Council for Home Safety and Security. Even more impressive, Weston was ranked as #3 on its list of the Top 100 Safest Cities in America for 2017. According to the Safest Cities in Florida 2018 report, “Weston, a planned community of 70,882 in the southeast portion of the state, posted remarkable crime statistics for a city of its size. With just 0.5 violent crimes and 4.84 property crimes per 1,000 inhabitants, Weston is very safe, indeed.” Earlier this year, the research website HomeSnacks ranked Weston as #3 on its list of the 10 Safest Cities in Florida – 2018. The SafeWise Report, the authority on safety and home security news, ranked Weston as #3 on its list of the 20 Safest Cities in Florida 2017.

All of these accolades are due to the efforts of Police Chief Kevin Butler and the dedicated officers of Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston.

“Being consistently ranked as one of the safest communities in which to live does not occur by happenstance,” states Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer. “Weston is fortunate to have the highly skilled men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office protecting our city and we are extremely proud of their exceedingly effective efforts. Under the superb leadership

of Weston Chief Kevin Butler, these diligent, observant and security-focused individuals are ready and prepared to respond to every type of call from an emergency incident to a service focused review of a business’ security measures.” Chief Butler notes that Weston residents play a part in the city’s safety rankings. He encourages homeowners to remain vigilant by locking car doors, ensuring vehicle key fobs are not left in the car, closing garage doors, keeping an eye out for suspicious individuals, and calling 9-1-1 if they see something. The Weston Police Services Department offers numerous community crime prevention and education programs which contribute to the City’s low crime rate. These services include bicycle registration, children’s fingerprinting, HomeWatch program to surveil your home while you are on vacation, crime prevention/security inspections for homes and businesses, residential pool safety inspections, SafetyNet tool for caregivers, as well as the BSO mobile Crime Prevention on Your Corner van, which provides an interactive experience to educate both children and adults on an array of crime prevention tactics. In addition, BSO offers group presentations on self-defense for women, drug prevention, anti-bullying, and gun safety.

Community CPR Day Declared a Huge Success BY STACEY BOMSER

undreds of Weston residents, young and old, heeded the call to learn hands-only CPR. More than 300 people, ages eight and up, were trained to perform this live-saving technique on Community CPR Day. The free program was presented by the City of Weston, Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, and Cleveland Clinic Florida. “It was fantastic to see such a great turnout for our first Community CPR Day,” states Weston District Fire Chief Bruce Angier. “The more residents that receive this important training, the more likely we can reduce the amount of time between a cardiac arrest and starting CPR, ultimately increasing chances for survival.” According to Roberto Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida, bystander CPR has been proven to save lives. “The survival rate of someone experiencing an out of the hospital cardiac arrest is extremely low, approximately ten percent. However, when bystanders intervene, survival rates increase significantly, showing that CPR saves lives and, in many cases, is the difference between life and death.”

Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over the past decade. In 2017, it was Farah Tejpar, MD estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Farah Tejpar, MD, Medical Director for the Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon and Half Marathon, to answer key questions about running, and how runners of all types can prepare.

Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons. Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.

Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. For an appointment with Dr. Tejpar or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida sports health specialist, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/sportshealth.

Spring Cleaning Poisonous Hazards in Your Home BY FIRE CHIEF BRUCE ANGIER

pril is an excellent time to do some “spring cleaning” and remove old potentially toxic substances from our houses. The Environmental Protection Agency defines toxic substances as any chemical or mixture that may be harmful to the environment and to human health if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin. Most of us live with toxic substances in our homes, lurking in kitchen cabinets, garages, or closets. Potential poisons many of us store include laundry packets, furniture and floor polishes, paints, glue, gasoline, pesticides, herbicides, and wood and metal cleaners. Often, they’ve been stored for many years, unnoticed and undisturbed. When warning labels are ignored or chemicals fall in the wrong hands, serious injuries and sickness can occur. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 300 children are treated in the U.S. every day and two die as a result of accidental poisoning. Children are more susceptible than adults to the adverse effects of chemical pollutants. Their bodies are developing rapidly and their hand-to-mouth activities make them more vulnerable to toxic exposure, according to the Children’s Environmental Health Network. The CDC recommends keeping toxic products such as cleaning solutions in their original packaging and out of sight and out of reach of children. Experts also recommend scrutinizing and periodically cleaning out storage cabinets and carefully following disposal instructions indicated on the product labels of all household products, including: laundry packets; floor and furniture polish; cosmetics; paints; markers; glue; drain and toilet cleaners; oven cleaners; glass, metal, and wood cleaners; pesticides and herbicides. These products may contain chemicals such as ammonia, sulfuric and phosphoric acid, lye, chlorine, lead, formaldehyde, and phenol. Check the packaging for any leaks or signs of deterioration. Look for expiration dates. Properly dispose of products that are expired or show signs of age. Rust on the can or container is also a signal to dispose of the product. If you have not used the item in over a year, consider disposing of it properly anyway, even if the container looks intact. You can drop off your unwanted hazardous waste and toxic substances for proper disposal at the City of Weston’s annual Household Hazardous Waste Disposal and Electronics Collection event on Sunday, April 29 from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Public Works Complex located at 2599 S. Post Road. More information about the event can be located at http://www.westonfl.org/media/docs/ misc/2018_HHW_and_Electronics_Collection_Event.pdf. Taylor Tip-Off Classic Benefits BRCA Cancer Research BY STACEY BOMSER

F

riends and family are organizing the inaugural Taylor Tip-Off Classic 3-on-3 basketball tournament to honor a beloved member of the community. The event takes place April 13th and 14th, with proceeds benefiting BRCA cancer research. “Our good friend, Matt Taylor, passed away at the end of last year after a two-year courageous battle with stomach cancer. We played basketball with Matt every Sunday at Hunters Point Park and at Weston Regional Park most Saturdays. He was the star of Temple Dor Dorim’s basketball league team. It was a request of his to have a basketball tournament in his honor if he passed,” states Aron Auspitz, who is organizing the Taylor Tip-Off Classic along with friend Bobby Auerbach, Matt’s sister, Lauren Taylor Wolfe, and a committee of Matt’s friends. Auspitz says Matt was a great player on the court, but an even better friend, husband, father and family man. “After being diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer, Matt battled like the champ that he was for his family and friends.” The Taylor Tip-Off Classic honors Matt and his love for the sport. The event consists of a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, with the first rounds held Friday night at Weston Regional Park and the semi-finals and finals held Saturday morning at the Weston YMCA. “The 3-on-3 tournament allows us to get the most teams and players on the court,” explains Auspitz. “It’s also less demanding for those who haven’t played in a long time but are willing to lace up for Matt.”

40 APRIL 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM

The event concludes with an Evening Hoop-la to celebrate Matt. The Prana Yoga Lab is hosting the party. According to Auspitz, “While going through chemo, Matt found peace, relaxation and a way to heal his aching body by doing yoga at Prana with his yogi, RoseAnn. After Matt passed, RoseAnn asked how she could help and offered her studio space for the party.” Proceeds from both the 3-on-3 basketball tournament and the Hoop-La will benefit BRCA cancer research. “Matt’s stomach cancer was linked to a rare BRCA genetic mutation that was discovered to run in his family,” explains Auspitz. “Matt’s final wish for this tournament was that proceeds raised would go to BRCA cancer research. Matt’s family chose the BRCA Foundation.” Auspitz welcomes the Weston community to support this cause. “Matt loved being around lots of people. He would have loved the way that his friends and family are bonding together to celebrate his life in a positive way.” The cost is $100 per player to participate in the Taylor Tip-Off Classic. That includes tournament entry, jersey, water bottle and admission to the Evening Hoop-La. Spouses of players can attend the party for an additional $25. Hoop-La only tickets are $50. To register or for more information contact Aron Auspitz at aronauspitz@gmail.com or Bobby Auerbach at bobby@auerbachhomes.com. AAUW Weston Hosts Workplace Empowerment Workshop for Women BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Weston Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is organizing what it hopes will become an annual workshop geared toward empowering women to reach their highest potential in the workplace. Entitled “Become Empowered and Valuable at Work to Boost your Income”, the workshop takes place on Saturday, April 28th at the Weston Branch Library. “Women are their own road blocks to their professional progress. Self-doubt, lack of confidence, belief that things are okay the way they are, and fear of losing their job are just some of these factors. Hence, it is necessary to empower women,” states AAUW Weston President Dr. Kamala Anandam. “In this workshop, we will focus on women’s own inhibitions that stand in the way of their progress in the workplace.” According to Dr. Anandam, the workshop will follow a two-pronged approach. First, having a mindset to want to become more empowered and valuable at work. And second, learning the tools to use to transform the desire into action. “Our slogan for the workshop is LEAP – Learn, Engage, Act, Prosper.” Life Coach Randee Leher, RN, MBA, will deliver the keynote address on “Unlocking your Potential.”

She will focus on the topic of mindset – how to recognize one’s own ambitions, the roadblocks to achieving those ambitions, and how to overcome those roadblocks. Afterwards, AAUW Member Ines Garcia, who has a successful career in sales and management, will lead an interactive session on the steps needed to go from ambition to action. This portion of the program will include group activities and role play. By the end of the workshop, each attendee will leave with a personalized plan to carry out at work to reach her goal. Dr. Anandam will conclude the event by reviewing the two-pronged approach and the need for women to take time periodically to examine where they are in their mindset and plan. She will also share the resources available from AAUW such as career development grants and gender pay gap and legal defense to help women who have been discriminated against in the workplace.

Following the workshop, attendees will have access to online networking opportunities to offer support and encouragement, share experiences, and celebrate successes. “AAUW believes in empowering women to believe in themselves and take a stand to get what they deserve and equip themselves with the tools to get what they deserve,” explains Dr. Anandam. “Our workshop aims to empower and enlighten working women in Weston.” The program takes place at the Weston Branch Library on Saturday, April 28th from 10:30am-3pm; lunch will be provided. There is no cost to attend the workshop, but reservations are required. Please email westonaauw@gmail.com.

Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie

I

n July 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create

an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. What is “The Artis Way? ” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization.

▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them.

42 APRIL 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM

▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. ▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect. ▸ “S” is for success and recognition.

How many people are affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia? Every 67 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the number of people ages 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million. Dementia is becoming more and more of an epidemic. Therefore, the more quality care we can offer, the more fulfilling the lives of those with dementia can lead.

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 4/30/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Parks Projects Promise Improved Playability BY STACEY BOMSER

t’s no secret that Weston is an active community, and that puts a lot of wear and tear on our parks system. To create greater playability, the city has been converting some of the traditional grass fields into artificial turf. Other park improvement projects include adding sports lighting to the fourth sand volleyball court at Regional Park. This project also included retrofitting the three other volleyball courts for LED. The parking lot lights at Tequesta Trace Park are also being converted to LED. “The Indian Trace Park renovation is in the final design phase and being readied to go out to bid for construction, which is anticipated to start at the end of the school year,” notes Decker. In addition, he says a work authorization has been approved to begin designing Weston’s newest park to be located near the Botaniko development in Bonaventure on Racquet Club Road between Blatt Boulevard and Saddle Club Road. Plans are also in the works to design a new Community Center at Weston Regional Park and to renovate the lobby/pro shop and locker rooms at the Weston Tennis Center. That project may include adding pickleball and paddleball as those sports are increasing in popularity.

2018 Visitors Guide is Valuable Resource for Residents For consumer convenience, there is a chart listing every dining establishment with price range, address, phone number, meals served, and amenities such as bar service. To make the guide even more user friendly, each listing also includes a map location key, so you know exactly where it is located in Weston. A Communications Department staff member physically visits each shopping plaza/location every time the guide is updated to see which businesses have changed and to make other corrections. Barrett-Miller points out that while there is no cost to be included in the guide, a business must have a commercial storefront in the City of Weston and maintain an active Business Tax Receipt (formerly known as an Occupational License). The Visitors Guide is updated periodically throughout the year. The current guide includes dining, shopping, personal services, financial institutions, hospitals/urgent care facilities, houses of worship, lodging, post office, supermarkets, library, automotive services, and parks and recreational facilities.

ining out and running errands in Weston just got a little easier thanks to The City of Weston Visitors Guide. Don’t let the name fool you. It’s a great resource for residents as well visitors to our community. The recently released Spring 2018 edition includes a comprehensive listing of local restaurants, shops and businesses that would be utilized by visitors to our City, as well as those of us who call Weston home. Originally titled The Dining, Shopping, Lodging Guide, the City has distributed this publication in print and online for the past 16 years. It was renamed The City of Weston Visitors Guide a few years ago after it was expanded to include additional resources such as city park facilities, gas stations, supermarkets, financial institutions, houses of worship and more. “This is an inexpensive service provided to enhance visitation to our local merchants. It provides visitors with easy access to a thorough list of services that they would likely need or wish to experience while visiting Weston,” states Denise Barrett-Miller, Director of Communications for the City of Weston, whose department compiles and prints The Visitors Guide. “It’s also a convenient resource for residents to know what’s available here in town so they can support our local businesses.”

Printed copies of The City of Weston Visitors Guide are available at City Hall, the Weston Community Center, the Weston Branch Library, and select additional locations such as hotels. You can download a copy at www. westonfl.org/media/docs/misc/2018_Weston_Visitors_Guide.pdf.

Legendary Dallas Brass Entertain and Educate BY STACEY BOMSER

choes of applause rang through the Cypress Bay High School Auditorium as a wildly enthusiastic audience gave multiple standing ovations to the Dallas Brass. The concert, which included student musicians from Cypress Bay, was presented by the City of Weston and the Weston Philharmonic Society. “This concert brought a special evening to our community and also a very special experience to our student band members,” states Weston City Commissioner Toby Feuer. “This is part of what makes Weston a top ten city in so many surveys.” The opening number was a tribute to the Parkland school shooting victims by the Cypress Bay Brass and Woodwind ensembles, directed by Cypress Bay Band Director Michael Scott. Members of the Dallas Brass joined these talented young musicians for this touching tribute. The Dallas Brass then lifted spirits with upbeat selections including a tribute to the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall program, A Taste of Honey by Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass, and Irving Berlin’s Alexander’s Ragtime Band. The Dallas Brass’ performance of American

Portraits featured Daniel Rodriguez, a.k.a. the Singing Policeman. The tenor gained national recognition after 9/11. Rodriguez’s repertoire included

Granada, Nessun Dorma and Bring Him Home from “Les Miserables”. The highlight of the night may have been his show closer, God Bless America, which brought the audience to its feet as they joined him in song. His powerful musical interpretations were loved by all. “So many people said it was the best concert we have presented,” states Weston Philharmonic Society Co-President Lou Marett. “A record number of folks attended the reception following the concert to talk with the musicians.” Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and

played here several years ago, I was really looking forward to their return. This concert was particularly special for me as my own son, a Cypress Bay student, was able to participate.” In addition to inviting select student musicians to join the band onstage, the Dallas Brass conducted a workshop with students in the brass and wind sections. Because of its commitment to music education in the schools, the Weston Philharmonic Society was especially delighted with this aspect of the Dallas Brass visit.

#NeverAgain Brings Change in Tallahassee BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK

D

uring my previous five years as a member of Florida’s legislature, I did not witness anything like what happened in Tallahassee in February. Not since the 1960’s and 70’s, when students protested the government’s handling of the Vietnam war, was there such determination to set the nation back on the right course. Throughout history it has been our youngsters who often take up the mantle for change that their elders seem unwilling or unable to do. No doubt this has exposed our cultural differences. Urban vs. Rural. Liberal vs. Conservative. Humankind has always been about us vs. them. Despite the divide, we are more unified than we think when it comes to the right of free speech, the freedom of religion and the right to bear arms. It’s just the boundaries of these freedoms. Each one of our freedoms has limitations. Now that we are fully engaged in a debate over the boundaries of the Second Amendment, here are my thoughts. The needle or pendulum, has swung over too much in favor of gun rights proponents in Florida, and many parts of the nation. Since my first election in 2012 we had done nothing in this state to advance gun safety – until now. Previously, we had expanded Stand Your Ground, passed legislation to allow more locations for people to apply for concealed weapons, and put into statute what we called ‘the pop tart’ law. Proposals that have not passed call for open carry, concealed weapons on college campuses, and allowing guns in airport terminals and court houses. In 2011 before my election, the Legislature preempted local gun ordinances with prosecution. Any and all legislation to address or place restrictions on gun ownership and safety had not been heard, period. Erika Rosenzweig, a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student, placed a letter on my desk in Tallahassee with some very astute and intelligent ideas. She does not favor pursuing any weapons ban saying it would be too difficult to get consensus, but she recommends no purchase of guns for anyone under 21, extensive background checks, mandatory weapons training and continuing education, biometric safety locks and expanded legal repercussions. As always, great ideas from our youngsters. Based on what has happened in most of the major shootings since the assault weapons ban was lifted, I propose that we reinstate it. It may have to be modified to fit present times, but the killings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas have shown that the easy access to these firearms is deadly. Due to the activism by parents and students, legislation advanced quickly at the end of Session which included a ban on bump stocks, along with some mental health regulations recommended by Governor Scott, and raising the age to 21 for people to purchase rifles. Rep. Lori Berman and I proposed confiscation of firearms through a court order by family members who can prove a member of their family is exhibiting behavior similar to the latest shooter. HB 231 was a stronger version of what the legislature passed and the Governor signed. More safety with armed and trained officers in schools was passed this session too, but a provision to arm teaches was included. Our Legislature must do more for gun safety that includes eliminating the “Docs and Glocks” statute, the size of gun magazines, and the gun show loopholes. I know that there will be many in the gun rights group that do not agree, but we have just been too complacent in matters of gun safety for too long. Your rights for gun ownership remain, but safety for the public, and the love of our children, outweigh unfettered rights and love of firearms. State Representative Richard Stark (D – Weston) represents House District 104 which includes all of Weston. You can reach Rep. Stark at RichardStark@myflorida.gov or by calling his legislative office at 54-217-0287.

She says the teachers selected for the program currently teach AP computer courses and Cambridge critical thinking courses. Upon completion, students will earn a FBI Cyber/STEM certificate and commencement cord. Mrs. Estripeaut says the cord will differentiate these students at graduation, highlighting their accomplishment for completion of this rigorous program. “The certificate from the FBI will allow students the opportunity to add this information to their resumes, their college applications, and possibly to their FBI future application if they decide to pursue a career in the Federal government.”

Cypress Bay Band Students Perform Alongside Dallas Brass BY STACEY BOMSER

I

t’s not everyday student musicians get the opportunity to meet professional musicians, let alone play alongside them. But, that’s exactly what happened when the legendary Dallas Brass performed in Weston. Prior to their concert, the ensemble conducted a musical workshop with members of the brass and wind sections of the Cypress Bay High School band. In addition to offering performance advice, the Dallas Brass urged students to continue to pursue their passion and look for opportunities to perform in and around the community. “It was an amazing educational experience for the students to interact with professional musicians,” states Cypress Bay Band Director Michael Scott. A select group of students were selected to play alongside the Dallas Brass as part of the evening concert sponsored by the City of Weston and Weston Philharmonic Society. The Dallas Brass joined the Cypress Bay band in the opening song, which was dedicated to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The students were all appreciative of this once in a lifetime experience. “It was so inspiring watching them perform so phenomenally and getting to play with them too,” shares trombone player Mates Roldan. “It really makes me want to grow as a player and to try to come close to their level of talent.” Trombonist Tyler Decker says he got a lot of good tips from the seasoned musi-

cians. “It was awesome!” French Horn-player Molly Hastings says she was inspired by the Dallas Brass. “These talented musicians inspire people like me to pursue music. They are full of experience and knowledge in their craft.” Trombonist Sebastion Bracho was awed. “They play with so much emotion and it surprised me how beautiful this experience was.” “To put it in one sentence, it was amazing!” exclaims Jennifer Novello, a trumpet player. “I honestly think it was one of the best experiences of my life.” Members of the Weston Philharmonic Society were thrilled to hear how this unique experience touched the lives of these young musicians. Part of the organization’s core mission is to bring music education and opportunities to Weston students. “A major focus of the Weston Philharmonic Society is to keep music alive in the schools,” explains Weston Philharmonic Society Co-President Andrea Burghardt. “We do In-School Programs in the elementary schools and give scholarships to graduating seniors. The addition of this interaction with the Dallas Brass is a huge plus in encouraging young people to appreciate music.”

End School Shootings with Real Solutions Marjory Stoneman Douglas Senior, Richard Doan, Shares His Account of the Horrific Parkland Tragedy and Demands Action to Keep Schools Safe verybody looks forward to senior year. After three years of high school (some after just one or two), many people can’t wait to leave and head off to college. Personally, I was looking forward to prom, graduation and infamous senior year shenanigans. I had hopes and dreams of attending a university and embarking on a future career in finance. Preparing for graduation and college was all that was important to me, but within a matter of minutes, all of those beloved goals and aspirations vanished. It was Valentine’s Day. It was supposed to be a day of love and joy, and for most of the day, it was. Up until 2:20 p.m., when the fire alarm went off. I was in the newspaper room when it all happened. We followed the traditional protocol and walked to our designated evacuation zones. We were on our way downstairs when I saw kids running back inside. Teachers yelled at us to run as well. I ran as directed, but in the back of my mind, I thought it was just a drill. Ever since the school board has implemented stricter safety policies this year, there was a rumor going around that we’d have an active shooter drill on campus. For many of us, that’s what we thought it was. The teachers said it was a code red, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t all a drill. We rushed back to the newspaper room, shut the lights off, and huddled into the corner of the classroom. I heard sirens wailing and choppers echoing in the distance. Soon enough, we saw a tweet from the Coral Springs PD to stay away from Stoneman Douglas. That was

when we realized it was not a drill. It was real. Eventually, we transitioned to the classroom closet where we stayed for about an hour and a half. We were scared. We were worried. We were in disbelief. We followed the news as it unraveled online. We watched live streams and kept a close eye on Twitter. It was hot and cramped in the closet, but none of that mattered in this life-ordeath situation. We hear voices in the hallway. “Police reporting,” they said. It was multiple voices. Then with a faint rattling of what I presumed to be keys, our classroom door was opened. I recall someone asked if anyone was there. We didn’t move. We didn’t know who it was. It could’ve been the shooter for all we knew, but my teacher’s intuition told her otherwise. She opened the closet door to the three men in our room. At that moment, I didn’t know if I was going to be shot or be saved. Thankfully, it was a rescue mission. They were SWAT — heavily armed and heavily protected. Their flashlights shone upon our faces, and we were ordered to step out with our hands up. The SWAT team then secured our room and the building. Eventually, they escorted a large number of students and faculty from neighboring classrooms to our room. One hundred sixty-seven students and teachers in total gathered in this one room. Later, we were moved to the media center where we sat and were given directions about evacuation for a few minutes. Then with our hands up and tears streaking down our face, we fled the building and exited the school. I saw papers scattered all over Courtesy: Suzanna Barna

the floor along with Valentine’s Day flowers and stuffed animals. When we stepped out, our eyes met a sea of law enforcement, ambulances and media surrounding our school. I was in utter shock. This is my school. This all happened here. Initially, I was in complete disbelief. I didn’t process it all yet. I am probably still processing it. This is my hometown: Parkland, Florida. Marjory Stoneman Douglas is my school. This is supposed to be a safe place. Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Las Vegas. This is the stuff we hear on the news, but no one ever thought it could happen here. If a mass shooting like this can happen here, it can happen absolutely anywhere. I am frustrated. There were signs. As with any mass shootings or suicide, there were signs. Yet they were overlooked, and because of that, 17 beautiful and innocent lives were taken away too soon. As for my mom, she’s been through the Vietnam War as a young child, yet she says that nothing compares to what she felt this past

Wednesday. It may sound cliché, but this truly was a parent’s worst nightmare. There is no greater fear than not knowing whether your children are safe, whether they will make it out alive, whether you’ll ever be able to tell your child that you love them again. In all the chaos, I forgot to return my mother’s messages for an hour. She tells me that was the worst hour of her life as she feared for her boy, not knowing if she would ever see me again. We are taking our time to grieve and to pray. People from around the world send their thoughts and prayers to us, and for that, we are truly appreciative. But frankly, thoughts and prayers themselves don’t do much. We must turn our thoughts and prayers into action. Our community feels distraught yet invigorated. The media is here. The whole world is watching, and this is our chance to be heard and make a difference. That way, something like this will not happen anywhere else. No one deserves to feel the

My friends and I have started the #NeverAgain movement to ensure that nowhere else has to endure a tragedy like this, that nowhere else do people have to suffer the pain that we feel. Unfortunately, however, our cause has quickly been twisted into a partisan debate. Far-right conservatives argue that we students are in fact not students, but crisis actors, travelling to scenes of tragedies to push some liberal anti-gun agenda. We wish we are acting. We wish this is all a hoax. We wish these deep emotions of misery, anger and frustration aren’t real. But it’s not. We are students. This is real and we

torment that we are experiencing right now. No one deserves to lose a loved one this way, and we are taking steps to ensure that this never happens again. Mass shootings in America aren’t anything new. Gun violence isn’t something rare, but it definitely cannot be something we get used to. Here in Parkland, we are turning our mess into a message and our pain into power. We are the voices for change. This is our moment to be heard. The media is here now, and they’ll probably be here for the next few days or weeks. But after that, they’ll be gone, and our story will probably just become a passing memory. So the time to act is now. My classmates and I are just children. The people in D.C. are the adults, and they must step up and do their jobs – protect and preserve this nation that we all hold so dear. Let our voices reach the legislative offices up in D.C. and get our congressmen and women to act. My friends are dead. Children are dead. Blood is spilled on the floor of our classrooms. We must do everything we can to ensure that Marjory Stoneman Douglas is the last school to suffer from a mass shooting. This isn’t an issue of red vs. blue. This is an issue about life and human suffering. It is rather a moral issue that can be solved through political action. Legislators and the people in office must do all they can to preserve life and protect the people of

Through bipartisanship and working across the political aisle, I believe it can happen. I believe in compromise. Practically everyone recognizes that there is a need for change. Though people have their own views on how to enact such change, there is nothing wrong with a difference of opinions. Such divergence can in fact foster intelligent discussion and the exploration of all possible options, but we must let all viewpoints be heard and acknowledged. I believe most feel we need to pass some common-sense gun laws. I believe we can agree that we must keep guns out of the hands of those who show signs of malicious intent. I believe we can agree upon widening the information stored in background check databases and increasing restrictions on the acquisition of firearms for the mentally ill. From there, we’ll work upwards to ensure the safety of our nation’s children without sacrificing the liberties the foundation of America grants us. Change is new and change can be daunting. Not all changes work but doing nothing isn’t going to solve anything. Let us set aside our political differences to work together. Let us initiate change for the common cause of the preservation of life. Let us use our hindsight as foresight and shape our way to a better future. It didn’t happen after Columbine in 1999, but it will happen now, and the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas will be the ones behind it. It is all to save a life – maybe even 17, hopefully more.

Gator Run Club Gives Children a Reason to Smile procedure to elect their board and run the meetings, and to make decisions as to which projects they want to carry out.” Their first project was making cards to send to a mission in Brazil. The club’s second project, a favorite by many members, was creating sock puppets for a mission in Colombia. These were used by the volunteers who perform the surgeries to demonstrate to patients what parts of their mouth they will be working on and to do it in a way that relaxes the child. Club Secretary Arthur Gomes says he liked making the sock puppets because it gave him a chance to make friends with other kids in the club. Co-treasurer Siena Trentini also thought making the sock puppets was fun. She says she joined Operation Smile because she likes helping people. The club is currently collecting items to make “Smile Bags”, gathering small soaps, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, thin coloring books and crayons, and a small stuffed animal to give to the children after surgery. Mrs. Martinez says club members are holding lemonade stands in their neighborhoods to raise the money needed to buy the cloth to make the bags. She says she is moved by the compassion and determination the Gator Run students possess for this cause. “Operation Smile is completely voluntary, and I am amazed each time we meet at the enthusiasm, kindness and joy that these students bring.”

Operation Smile at Gator Run meets twice a month to complete projects to benefit Operation Smile, an international organization that provides free, life-changing surgeries to children born with mouth deformities such as cleft lip and palate. First grade teacher Shannon Martinez brought the club to Gator Run. She first became aware of Operation Smile while teaching in Honduras. When she discovered that the former head of Operation Smile in Honduras, Giannina Güell, had moved to Weston and is now Development Director for Operation Smile in South America, Mrs. Martinez knew she wanted to start the club at her school. After getting a green light from Principal Peters, she enlisted the help of fellow teachers, Elaine Hollander, Carrie Velasquez, Rebecca Rivera and Victoria Perez. While it may be guided by teachers, Mrs. Martinez says Operation Smile at Gator Run is run by the 54 students in third through fifth grade who make up the club. “They follow parliamentary

Imagine Charter School at Weston Middle School Students Practice Mindfulness Meditation BY STACEY BOMSER

M

iddle school can be stressful. Between the academic expectations and social pressures, sometimes it is hard for students to cope. That is why Patricia Roach is teaching her Health and Wellness class at Imagine Charter School at Weston the benefits of mindfulness meditation and yoga.

“Mindfulness meditation is a powerful way to find the wisdom already inside them and it can offer our students coping strategies for managing stressful situations and transform difficult relationships, which

can be of lasting benefit by restoring their health and balance,” explains Mrs. Roach. “It can free them from those difficult thoughts about the past or the future and teaches them how to live in the ‘present’ moment in a non-judgmental way, to explore their values and develop a sense of purpose.” Mrs. Roach says there are numerous benefits to mindfulness meditation, namely: it helps students focus and pay attention, which can help with school pressure; it teaches them to deal with life situations in a less emotionally reactive way; it teaches effective strategies for making better choices; it teaches inner resilience and how to regain control, which aids self-regulation; it can reduce the anxiety of trying to ‘fit in’; and it improves sleep and the immune system. The students love their mindfulness meditation sessions. In fact, Mrs. Roach says the children often ask if they can do mindfulness mediation before they start their lessons in other classes. The Health and Wellness course concentrates on

improving the mind, body and spirit. To promote physical well-being, students are learning to practice yoga. According to Mrs. Roach, yoga pairs perfectly with mindfulness meditation because it has been proven to improve fitness and physical health, reduce stress and anxiety, improve optimism, improve focus and school performance, improve self-esteem and body image, encourage creativity, and develop discipline and self-regulation. “Yoga and mindfulness meditation provide students with skills to navigate challenges and build a core foundation that benefits both the mind and body well beyond their teenage years,” she states.

Principal Eliot Tillinger then joined the students on the basketball courts and shared with them how proud he was of their milestone academic accomplishments.

Video games aren’t just for kids! There are tons of entertaining video games that families can play together. Our family likes to buy some movie candy, pop some popcorn and go at it. Favorites for family time on the Xbox or PS4 include sing-along games like American Idol, Sports contest like the Madden football franchise or even Dance Revolution.

Staycation at a local Hotel One of the most exciting parts of traveling is staying in a new place, especially for kids. One thing South Florida has an abundance of is great hotels. Families that don’t have the time or finances to travel during Spring Break can get most of the benefits while staying close to home. Families can 26 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYAVENTURA.COM

hooks into the water and waiting for a bite. Many Broward County Parks allow and encourage fishing. Be sure to have the appropriate licenses. For more info on fishing licenses check out www.myfwc.com.

What better thing is there to do in South Florida when the kids are off school than go to the beach? There is certainly something for everyone: Hollywood Beach’s 1920s-style oceanfront promenade Broadwalk will appeal the nostalgic; Laid-back Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a great place to spend the day eating ice cream, reading a book and enjoying a less-busy existence; Pompano Beach offers terrific shopping and dining; the kids could watch mighty cruise ships set sail at Fort Lauderdale Beach; or, families can get away from it all at the John U. Lloyd Beach Sate Park. If you can’t get away, be sure to make this Spring Break one the remember anyway. OURCITYWESTON.COM | APRIL 2018 67

POSITIVE PARENTING

The King Size Bed BY IVIS MATEOS

A

s a mother of two and an expert in preschool education, I am bombarded daily with tons of questions from whether to breastfeed or not, vaccine choices, potty training, is biting or hitting normal, the cause of tantrums, etc. One of the most common questions I am asked is, “How do you feel about children sleeping with their parents?” Here is my humble opinion: I UPGRADED TO A KING SIZE BED! If you do your research for expert advice in books or online, you will find very different opinions about the impact of the co-bed or family bed, commonly known as children sleeping with their parents. Some experts say sleeping with your children is emotionally unhealthy because it makes them co-dependent. Others will defend cultural acceptance for sleeping with their children, since this will give the child a sense of security. I say, forget what these experts say, they don’t live with you. They don’t know the needs of your child like you do. I believe that as a parent you should go with your gut feeling first and foremost. There is no better sensor of truth than that instinct that lives inside your maternal or paternal gut (some may argue my theory – but I side with my gut).

Now Registering For

Theater Camp in Weston Perhaps you are more like me, somedays you want to hold your child tight in your arms and don’t mind the leg over your neck and arms spread so wide you only have a small, ten-inch corner of the bed for you to spend the next eight hours of sleep in. Other nights, you want to be the one spreading the arms and legs and taking up all the sleeping space, while the child sleeps in their room. There are some days your child will demonstrate a need for additional nurturing – maybe they are not feeling well, or they simply have a need for an extra dose of TLC. Take advantage of these moments. I had both my boys sleep with me on and off and when it was time for them to ween off, they did it on their own. Nothing wrong with that! Yet, my boys have grown up to be very independent, dependable, intelligent, young men (most of the time). Still on occasion, my teenage boy sneaks in, in the middle of the night, and I welcome him. They are kids for a very short time and soon enough they will be sleeping in their own place and perhaps in a far away land. You never know where the future may take them. Deciding what is best for you and your family is a very personal decision, and it is our responsibility to make the decision with the child’s best interest in mind. When the intention is healthy and fueled with love the results will yield just that. Ivis Mateos is a mother of two boys and has more than 21 years combined experience in educational consulting and management. In addition to earning her National Administrator Credential, Mateos has lead workshops on curriculum development, teacher development and parenting. ith more than 1,300 students representing over 30 different countries, Gator Run Elementary School is one of the largest and most diverse schools in South Florida. For the past four years, the PTA has organized a Multicultural Festival to celebrate this diversity and bring the school community together. “With over 2,000 people in attendance and 24 countries represented, this event lets our students and families showcase their cultural heritage,” states Nicole Jordan, Multicultural Festival founder and this year’s Co-Chair. “It’s an opportunity for kids to celebrate where they are from and respect those that are different.” According to Co-Chair Erin Monaghan, at the Multicultural Festival children get to see and feel that there is more that unites us than divides us. “While going from booth to booth, kids can see the similarities in that each country has a unique flag, music, food and artifacts. Cypress Bay Walkout Honors Lives Lost in Marjory Stoneman Douglas Shooting BY JESSIE CHAIET, STUDENT WRITER

H

olding signs that read “Protect Kids Not Guns” and “Enough is Enough,” Cypress Bay High School’s student body, as well as administrators and staff, walked from campus to Vista View Park. The purpose of the District-approved walkout was to honor the 17 lives of those fatally shot at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Senior Devon Stoloff, who organized the walkout with senior Julia Levy, said it was a great way to garner support for Stoneman Douglas. “We all have a

voice that can travel much further and get our message picked up by many more if we do something out of the ordinary. Having 5,000 kids walk the streets together — united — and gather around with key speakers was just the way to go about it.” Levy said she was inspired to organize the event after seeing schools across Broward County holding walkouts. “We were going to do a 17-minute thing to honor the lives that were lost and then we realized that a lot of kids wanted to walkout and Broward County was walking out in general, so we decided to take the initiative and create a Cypress Bay walkout.” After all students made their way to the soccer fields at Vista View Park, four Stoneman Douglas students spoke about the trauma they faced on February 14th. Stoneman Douglas senior Kali Clougherty said it was meaningful to speak at the walkout so other students could hear a first-hand account of the shooting. “I think it’s important to talk to other high schools and make sure that they understand the severity of what has happened,” Clougherty said. “It is important

that my classmates and I go around to speak to people and tell them what we went through so that they can understand our experience, so they don’t have to ever experience it themselves.” Cypress Bay Assistant Principal Marianela Estripeaut said she was proud of the Bay’s students for taking the initiative themselves in order to make change in gun reform and honor the students who passed away at Stoneman Douglas. “I thought the walkout was absolutely beautiful. I get choked up just thinking about how respectful they were and how they honored the students of Stoneman Douglas.” Clougherty said it was amazing to see so many students unite in support of her school. “To see them all supporting and just wanting to take part in this movement is absolutely incredible. It just warmed my heart and made me feel like we’re not alone and that people actually care about what happened.” Jessie Chaiet is a junior at Cypress Bay High School. drian Gandara is taking his message of health and wellness to the streets – literally. The Falcon Cove Middle School sixth grader has been running a 5K a day since December 9th in effort to inspire people to get active and to remind everyone that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. “I decided to do a 5K a day for six months because I wanted to challenge myself and get more in shape, and also to motivate people and tell them that they can do anything as long as they try,” shares elevenyear-old Adrian. “I want to motivate everybody and tell them to never give up and don’t let your dreams be dreams. If you think you can do something, then you can. This is the message I am trying to spread through the world.” He is reaching a wide audience via his YouTube channel, Fit with Adrian. He uses the social media platform to motivate viewers to get in shape, eat healthier and feel better about themselves. It features posts on nutrition, demonstrations on how to stretch properly, and offers fitness advice to followers. Adrian says sometimes he needs to follow his own motivational advice. “It has sometimes been hard to

wake up every morning and go run because I am feeling tired. I have also had times where I don’t feel well, and I don’t feel like running. I know that there will be challenges that I would have to overcome, and when it happens, I just fight through it.” He’s hoping his pledge to run 5K a day motivates his peers. “Kids are just turning lazier and lazier with all the video games that are coming out and they never want to work out. hether you’re using dermal fillers, botox, or undergoing minimally invasive surgery — bruising can happen. For those who seek out cosmetic treatments to look their very best, bruising or discoloration after a procedure can be a nuisance. While some treatments are more likely to cause bruising than others (hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm or Restylane may be more likely to cause bruising than wrinkle reducers Botox or Dysport), there are steps you can take before and after a procedure to minimize posttreatment side effects and help enhance your body’s natural ability to heal. Avoid blood thinners: Many common dietary supplements are natural anticoagulants, thinning the blood and making you more prone to bruising. Use of fish oils, flax seed, omega-3s, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, ginseng and vitamin E supplements should be discontinued at least seven days before treatment. Over the counter medications like aspirin and ibuprofen also have bloodthinning properties and should be stopped a week before and a day following your procedure. If you are on a prescription medication that thins the blood, do not discontinue use — but be aware that it may increase your risk for bruising after treatment. Wine or other alcoholic beverages can also thin the blood and should be avoided 24 hours before treatment. Use homeopathic Arnica Montana: For centuries the natural pain reducer Arnica Montana has been used to decrease swelling, bruising and discoloration. Available as a topical ointment or in tablet form, you can begin taking Arnica tablets the day before your treatment and continue using the tablets or the topical ointment for your first five days of recovery. Add a Bromelain supplement: Bromelain is a powerful anti-inflammatory that occurs naturally in pineapple. Bromelain can be used to help mitigate inflammation and bruising and to speed the healing process after a cosmetic procedure. You can take bromelain for up to seven days following treatment. Ask for ice: Using a cooling pack or other cooling method to numb treatment areas both before and after a procedure helps constrict blood vessels, reducing the likelihood of bruising. Decrease swelling with lymphatic drainage: After a surgery, lymph may collect in affected tissues, causing swelling. Although lymphatic drainage is not typically necessary after the use of fillers or injectables, patients who have undergone a surgical facial or body contouring procedure — like an upper or lower eyelid surgery or a “mommy makeover” — might benefit from this type of massage, which helps remove retained lymph fluids. Take it easy: For the first 48 hours following a cosmetic treatment, do your best to slow down. Refraining from strenuous activity and exercise will help minimize blood flow to impacted areas so they can repair themselves faster. Although it may not be possible to keep the bruises completely at bay, a holistic approach to healing can help speed your recovery from cosmetic procedures naturally and effectively. Dr. Tamy M. Growing Pains in Children or Merely Flatfeet? BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

F

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot. An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified, and the problem treated. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Upper Back Pain BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER

Y

ou may have woken up with a “kink” in your neck or upper back, or a shooting pain in your shoulder or arm. Perhaps you have noticed restricted movement in these regions doing the simplest of tasks, such as putting on a coat or backing up the car. Upper back disorders can be manifested in a wide variety of symptoms ranging from a constant dull ache to an excruciating stabbing pain. It may be precipitated by head, arm or torso movement, or by coughing, sneezing or just taking a normal breath. After low back pain, neck pain and headache, upper back discomfort is the most frequent reason people visit a doctor of chiropractic. The upper back refers to the general area between the shoulder blades extending up to the base of the neck. Comprising the upper half of the thoracic spine, it involves ribs that attach to the thoracic spine, and numerous muscles, ligaments, nerves and other soft tissue. Some of the most common causes of upper back pain include: ▸▸ chronic poor posture ▸▸ abnormal thoracic spinal alignment and function (biomechanics) ▸▸ structural and functional problems of the neck (cervical spine) ▸▸ strains and sprains due to trauma or repetitive overuse ▸▸ arthritic conditions A good argument can be made for only two main causes -- poor posture and strains/sprains -- since the majority of structural and mechanical problems of the thoracic spine and neck, and the most common form of spinal arthritis, osteoarthritis, can be traced directly back to chronic poor posture. Less common causes of upper back pain can include organic diseases such as lung, heart and gallbladder, bone diseases and fractures. Your chiropractic doctor’s first task is to perform a thorough consultation and examination so that an accurate diagnosis can be made. The examination usually includes a manual, hands-on assessment of the area of complaint as well as associated areas, a detailed postural evaluation, appropriate orthopedic, neurological and vascular tests, and will frequently include an x-ray evaluation. Occasionally, laboratory blood work may be ordered. Your chiropractor will discuss the examination findings with you and if the condition is appropriate for chiropractic care, will recommend a specific treatment program. In cases where other forms of health care are required, prompt referral to the appropriate health provider will be made. Your chiropractor will offer two basic types of care: relief care which helps restore the movement of individual spinal segments, thus helping to reduce immediate pain and symptoms; and corrective care. Corrective care involves specific spinal adjustments, rehabilitative exercises and other procedures that reconstruct the spine to as near normal as possible. By restoring near normal spinal alignment and function, not only is pain relieved but optimum healing can occur. For a consultation or more information, contact Dr. Rick Behar and Dr. Marc Browner at Windmill Health Center in Weston at 954-217-4881. They have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Contact the Weston location for more information.

he number one cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States in 2016 was liposuction, with just over 400,000 liposuction procedures performed last year in the United States, according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. With an emphasis on nutrition, exercise, and leading a healthy lifestyle to look and feel better, there comes a time when, despite diet and exercise, unwanted localized fat deposits don’t go away. For many patients, removal of these pockets of subcutaneous fat through liposuction is the best option. However, there are cases when a person is not a candidate for surgical fat removal. The reason for not undergoing surgery may be multifactorial. There may be a medical contraindication or another personal reason why an individual would rather have a noninvasive approach to improving their body contour. Today, there are several nonsurgical fat removal options. The majority of which have only shown minimal or no benefit in controlled experimental studies with the exception of Cryolipolysis. The removal of fat by application of localized “freezing” technique is how CoolSculpting works. By no means is this technique equal in efficacy or outcome to liposuction, but it can be an effective method to reduce localized fat deposits for certain individuals. Based upon evidence of safe and effective body contouring clinical studies in humans, Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) received FDA clearance for fat reduction in the flanks in 2010, then for the abdomen in 2012. Recent studies have shown benefit in treatment of the lateral thighs, arms, inner thighs, bra fat area, and double chin with evidence of skin tightening in the neck region. Eighty-six percent of the patients treated noticed a visible fat reduction and with 90% satisfaction with the treatment. There are several vacuum cup applicators available now including the standard contoured cup, CoolCore, and the flat cup, CoolFit, applicator. The applicator is placed over the region of localized fat excess; the fat is treated with a vacuum assisted device which delivers cold to the subcutaneous fat destroying the fat cells which are metabolized by the body and eliminated naturally. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated areas, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work immediately after their CoolSculpting session is over. Over the next several weeks to months, the treatment area shows a reduction in subcutaneous fat and improved contour. We are now offering the most advanced techniques in CoolSculpting and CoolSmooth techniques to ensure our patients receive the best positive treatments for body contouring. Why The Neurolens May Be Right For You BY DR. JANE THERRIEN

T

hroughout the greater span of human history, we have primarily used our visual system to work at a distance. However, in the last decade we have been increasingly incorporating digital technology into our lives, changing the way we use our vision. With this digital revolution, we have seen a rapid increase in the use of laptops, tablets, smartphones, and other mobile devices. As a result, our eyes are subject to stressors that would seem alien to our distant ancestors. With a misalignment in your visual system, your eyes overcompensate to see one clear, crisp image. This can trigger unwanted stress on the trigeminal nerve, causing symptoms of computer vision syndrome, or digital eye strain. These symptoms include dry eye, headaches, blurred vision, and neck/shoulder pain. When the misalignment is corrected with Neurolenses, your visual system doesn’t need to work as hard, relieving your symptoms.

Neurolens is a new lens designed for eyeglasses that provides relief from the symptoms associated with the overuse the digital devices. lenses were Our City ofMedia 4/18These Crossword developed with the specific intention to reduce or eliminate eye misalignment at all distances, Neurolens is the only lens that corrects the eyes from overcompensating during digital device use.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Truth About Restraining Orders BY EVAN BARON

I

2017 bestof weston

am often questioned about the process involved in obtaining a “restraining order.” Many people believe that such an Order can be obtained if a husband and wife get into a verbal argument or if someone is harassing them. This is not true and Florida law is very specific as to the requirements needed to seek such an order. First of all, there is in fact really no such legal document as a “restraining order.” The Order that can be obtained is called an Injunction for Protection Against Domestic Violence. As the title suggests, this order is to protect someone from domestic violence, which is defined as any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member. The statute goes on to further explain that anyone who is either the victim of domestic violence or has reasonable cause to believe he or she is in imminent danger of becoming the victim of any act of domestic violence has standing to seek an injunction.

The basis for such an injunction, therefore, must be based upon either acts of violence or acts which would result in the other party having a reasonable belief that there was imminent danger of such violence. Conversely, injunctions will not be issued based upon harassment or threats which do not prove to result in imminent fear of harm. To obtain the Injunction, a sworn affidavit must be filed and presented to a judge. If the Judge feels that the evidence is sufficient, a Temporary Injunction will be issued. This will usually require the Respondent (the person who has the injunction issued against him/her) to vacate the marital residence and to have no contact, direct or indirect, with the complaining party. A hearing will then be held within 15 days, giving both parties the opportunity to present their case to a judge. At that hearing, either party can be represented by an attorney. The Judge will then determine if the Injunction shall remain in effect or whether it shall be dismissed. Injunctions can remain in effect for a certain period of time or indefinitely. The Injunction can also be modified allowing minimal contact to discuss issues such as child visitation. The purpose of this Injunction is to offer protection to someone who has been the victim of domestic violence or has a reasonable fear to believe that he/she will be a victim. Unfortunately, it is sometimes abused by individuals who use it as a means to “get back” or punish their spouse. I often say that the Injunction is to be used as a shield, to protect an individual, and not as a sword to harm someone. The Petition seeking the Injunction is sworn to by the applicant as being true. It is unlawful to lie under oath. Nobody should allow themselves to be a victim of domestic violence. If you are, the law exists for your protection. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. Develop More Confidence Hitting from the Fairway BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL

H

ave you ever wondered how to become more consistent while hitting your fairway woods off the fairway? A three wood off the fairway is one of the more difficult golf shots for amateur golfers to master. By making a few simple adjustments at set up, this club can be a whole lot easier to hit. The key ingredient to becoming more consistent with this shot is using the correct position. Place two long irons, which we will call here “alignment clubs”, from your bag to help ensure that you are placing the ball in the correct positioning. Your stance should be Dean Sklar, PGA parallel to your intended target on the driving range. The first alignment club is going to be placed on the ground and aiming down the target line. The second alignment club is going to be placed perpendicular to the one on the ground, opposite of the golf ball. Now, if you have a driver, I want your inside left heel touching the alignment rod at address. If you are using a 7 iron, for example, I would place the rod in the middle of your stance, both feet equal distance from the alignment club on the ground. This helps ensure that you establish the correct ball position in practice. Now for the 3 wood. I want you to set up with your left heel an inch from the alignment club. To hit the fairway wood, you want your weight evenly distributed (50/50) and slightly elevate your left shoulder as if it is pointing towards the sky. This slight angle will increase your chances of having a shallower angle of attack and you will be able to strike the ball as the club is making contact with the ball. One last thing is to make sure the club is allowing the loft of the club to get the ball in air. At address sole the club as the manufacturer designed it and do not close the club face as this will decrease the loft and thus turn your 3 wood into a 10 or 9 degree driver loft and not get the ball airborne as easily as your 3 wood’s 15 degree loft. PGA Professional Dean Sklar is a member of the Quarter Century Club of the PGA of America, an elite group of members who have served the PGA with honor and pride for 25 years. If you would like to talk to Dean about your golf game, contact him at Dean.Sklar@FloridaMoves.com or the Rose and Dean Sklar Real Estate Group at Coldwell Banker, 1760 Bell Tower Lane in Weston, 954-389-6197, or online at www.WestonFloridaUSA.com.

The Facts About “Laughing Gas” BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

L

ike many parents in our community, I tend to approach the use of any medicine for my children with a discerning eye. What are the risks and benefits of its use? How long will it last in the system? Are there any side effects I should look for or take-home instructions needed? It is for this reason, that I am happy to educate the public on the use and safety of Nitrous Oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) for use with the apprehensive pediatric dental patient, when indicated. It is first important to point out the very long history and safe track record of its use. Nitrous oxide (N20) was first discovered by Joseph Priestly in 1772. Interestingly, its use for the first 80 years was mostly for entertainment purposes, which is how it received its current nickname “laughing gas.” In 1845, Horace Wells, a dentist from Hartford CT, demonstrated its use as an anesthetic during the extraction of a wisdom tooth at Harvard University. His work on nitrous oxide would eventually earn him the distinction of being the discoverer of anesthesia. Once accepted by the medical community, its method of delivery had been improved and in turn its impeccable safety record had become established. Nitrous oxide is a gas that is delivered through inhalation. Although early documentation showed safe delivery in its pure form, safety has increased exponentially with its combination with oxygen. The addition of oxygen assures that there will be no decrease in oxygenation of the body throughout its use. New sophisticated equipment also assures desired concentrations by a titrating delivery mechanism, allows for rapid reversal, and disallows usage of more than 70% nitrous gas. The combination with oxygen has not only made the use of nitrous safer, but has also made its use more versatile. Its first use was prior to the discovery of the local anesthetic, lidocaine. For this reason, it was administered at higher concentrations in order to achieve some form of anesthesia (relief of pain). In the dental environment, it is given at a much lower dosage (much lower than the recommended limit) in order to achieve anxiolysis, or reduction of anxiety. Its safety record at these lower doses is impeccable. In the 1970’s, H. Ruben had documented 3 million cases of its use for dentistry without adverse reaction. In answer to my initial questions, nitrous oxide is a safe and odorless inhalant, which exits the body immediately after removal. The only routine recommendation we give is no ingestion of food or drink 60 minutes prior to its use to eliminate chance of nausea. Although we prefer to treat our patients without the need of an anxiolytic, Nitrous Oxide remains a perfect alternative for pediatric patients who may otherwise have a “bad experience.” Negative experiences in youth have been shown to create long term dental anxiety lasting into adulthood for some dental patients. It is for this reason, that over 80% of all pediatric dentists report using it in their practice.

How Does Dementia Affect Executive Functioning? BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES

A

person with dementia often experiences issues related to executive functioning. Planning, problem solving and executing tasks are all elements of executive functioning. These are all skills needed to complete many tasks related to finances and bill paying. Even if a person is not displaying significant issues with memory, there could be problems with the executive functioning. And often this is one of the first signs that family members notice. There are several indicators to look for that your loved one may be having some difficulty. Early in the disease, the person may need longer to figure out the amount to pay when out to a restaurant. Calculating the tip becomes more challenging. When paying in cash, processing the bills and change to put out might require more time than usual. In one example, a gentleman was paying his bill at the register and was using cash. The total came to $21.52. While going through his money, he knew that he needed to leave one of one kind of bill (a $20) and two of another ($1.00 bills). However, the gentleman took several seconds going through his bills and ended up giving the cashier two $20.00 bills and one $1.00 bill instead. The processing and planning difficulty is common. Bill paying takes many of the skills related to executive functioning, therefore, this is an aspect of the person’s life that should be looked at. Paying the bill late or not paying the correct amount are common mistakes that are made. In addition, checks not being signed or filled out completely are other issues seen frequently in persons with dementia. Having a legal representative named is a step that needs to occur for most adults, especially those with some cognitive issues. If this has not been completed, an elder law attorney can be of assistance. The Power of Attorney can act on behalf of the person as needed and in most cases, can have communication with banks, other financial institutions, and companies. It is important to provide help to your loved one, but also to maintain their dignity. Giving up financial control is a difficult step in the disease. Having a conversation with the person about the importance of financial security may be the first step and then to offer assistance. Family members often take away the task completely which may leave the person feeling diminished. Perhaps set up a day or two a month to pay bills together. This will allow the person to maintain independence but assuring that the bills are paid properly. If there are more difficulties, you may consider having the bills mailed directly to you to be certain that they are not being misplaced. It may be necessary for a family member to write out the bills and then have the person sign them. And as the disease progresses, the task will most likely need to be completed solely by the responsible party. Therapeutic use of Human Growth Hormone provides Health Benefits BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP

L

ike many other processes in the human body, production of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) begins to decline as we age. Released by the pituitary gland, HGH is a protein responsible for growth and cell reproduction. This is exactly why production of HGH rises during childhood years, making children and adolescents grow, and reaches its peak during puberty. By the time a person is 20-30 years of age, production of HGH takes a downward spiral. By age 60, HGH is usually less than half what it was at 25. In today’s society, HGH has been associated with improved performance in athletes, because it helps regulate body composition, as well as muscle and bone growth. As we become older and GH levels decrease, it becomes increasingly harder to repair and recover after intense exercise. Unfortunately, this has made HGH a desirable substance amongst athletes who end up abusing this anabolic hormone - reason professional sports associations have banned its use. In spite of the negative connotations, when used under medical supervision, HGH does have health benefits that have proven advantageous for patients in need. HGH injections are used to treat children with poor growth due to specific medical conditions or unknown causes. In addition, HGH is prescribed for adults who experience deficiencies or loss of muscle due to HIV or AIDS. An increase in muscle mass, exercise capacity and energy are some of the benefits reported in these cases. HGH is released in small quantities while we sleep and levels vary throughout the day, making it very difficult to measure. It is important that specialized testing be done in order to accurately record HGH levels and diagnose a possible deficiency. A pioneer study done in 1986 found that even in older age adults, it is possible to stimulate the pituitary gland to release as much HGH as it did in younger years. The results included the following benefits, among others: ▸▸ Memory improvement ▸▸ Fewer wrinkles ▸▸ Thicker skin with more collagen ▸▸ Organ revitalization ▸▸ Better vision ▸▸ Stronger bones ▸▸ A stronger heart with improved cardiac output As a functional medicine practice, Bellissimo Medical specializes in hormone therapy, including HGH and sermorelin, an analog of naturally occurring growth hormone releasing hormone that stimulates production of HGH. When it comes to hormone therapy, it is important that patients work with a qualified practitioner to ensure correct diagnosis as this treatment is not for everyone. The first step is to evaluate a patient’s current health condition and learn about their medical history. Many times, we can slow down our biological clocks and treat health conditions by making simple lifestyle changes that include correct nutrition, exercise and adequate sleep. HGH is not a miracle shot nor the elixir from the fountain of youth - but it can have profound anti-aging effects when prescribed by an experienced physician. A Children’s Carousel is Weston’s Premier Early Childhood Learning Center BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or more than 20 years, A Children’s Carousel has been providing a premier early childhood education to children in Weston and surrounding communities. A continual Gold Seal Award winner and recipient of much community recognition, including several Best of Weston awards, the preschool caters to families seeking a superior learning experience for their young children. Director Michelle Bussie shares more about what makes A Children’s Carousel unique. What is A Children’s Carousel? Our Apple Certified preschool provides a developmentally appropriate theme-based program that focuses on each child’s individual learning style. With programs for children from six-weeks through pre-kindergarten, our curriculum provides students with hands-on experience in math, science, language, phonics, music, art, and more. What does the school do to promote social development? Our students are encouraged to socialize in a positive manner using problem solving, listening, verbal and group skills. To help promote positive peer

interaction during outdoor play, A Children’s Carousel offers an organic vegetable garden and a permanent outdoor “Music Garden” featuring tuned musical instruments built to stand up to the weather and designed for durability. What is special about your teaching staff? A Children’s Carousel is staffed with degree certified and experienced teachers, trained in the most progressive methods of early childhood instruction. Many of our teachers have been with us for more than ten years. Their tenure is a testament to their dedication to the education of the children. What are some of the special features of the school? Our Carousel City provides children with a variety of opportunities to experience different communityrelated activities in the Pet Store, Café, Food Market, Theatre, Construction Site, and more. They love dressing up, performing, and creative play. We also have Meet the Masters (art) and Meet the Composers (music) programs. What distinguishes A Children’s Carousel from

other preschool programs? We set high standards for the children, as 95% of our Pre-K graduates can read, write and tie their shoelaces. We have the top VPK scores in Broward County. In addition, in 2017 we incorporated STEM into our curriculum. STEM is a new frontier exploring Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We include basic skills as well as age-appropriate Lego builds. This helps prepare our students for the technologically advanced world in which we live today. Is there anything else you would like readers to know? A Children’s Carousel offers a variety of schedules to help accommodate every student and parent, as well as a summer camp. It has been a privilege to serve the Weston community for the past two decades, and we look forward to many years to come. We invite you to come tour our school. A Children’s Carousel is located at 1051 Shotgun Road. For more information visit www.achildrenscarousel.com or call 954-424-1898.

Looking for a superior preschool experience? Step Up to A Children’s Carousel! It is the mission of A Children’s Carousel to provide each child the highest quality, developmentally appropriate, preschool education possible. The honor of again being voted “Best in Weston” demonstrates that we have accomplished our mission. This is due to our experienced and caring teachers employing innovative methodology, and our highly effective curriculum with proven results, in a safe and nurturing environment.

We’ve been introducing toddlers, preschoolers, and Pre-K children to the joys of education & community for more than 20 years. egular physical examinations are essential to maintaining your pet’s health. A thorough examination checks every major body organ and system: Eyes – The eyes will be checked for redness, cloudiness, or discharge. Ears – Many pets suffer from ear infections. Your veterinarian will examine your pet’s ear canals for possible signs of an ear problem: debris, waxy buildup, or trauma caused by scratching. Mouth – Your veterinarian will look in your pet’s mouth for signs of dental disease and for broken or missing teeth. If he or she sees any problems, your veterinarian may recommend a thorough dental examination and cleaning for your pet. Respiratory system – Your veterinarian will listen to your pet’s heart and lungs. Digestive system – Your veterinarian will “palpate” (feel) your pet’s abdomen for signs of discomfort and to check that the major organs are the right size and shape. Musculoskeletal system – Your veterinarian will palpate all your pet’s major muscles and bones to check for signs of weakness or pain. Skin and hair coat – Your veterinarian will check of all your pet’s “lumps and bumps.” If anything suspicious is found, a biopsy or lump removal may be recommended. Laboratory tests – During a routine examination, your veterinarian may also want to take samples of your pet’s blood, urine, and feces to obtain additional information about your pet’s health or to ensure that specific body systems are functioning properly. During your pet’s examination, your veterinarian will also ask you many questions about your pet’s behavior, lifestyle, and health history since your last visit. The answers to these questions will help determine what preventive care recommendations the veterinarian should make to help keep your pet healthy. Based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and disease risk, your veterinarian will recommend vaccinations for your pet. In virtually every state, vaccination against rabies is required by law.

Rabies Prevention Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system. All warm-blooded animals, including wild animals, dogs, cats, and humans, can get rabies. Rabies remains prevalent in wildlife populations – primarily raccoons, bats, foxes, and skunks. Pets are at risk of contracting the disease from wild animals and potentially transmitting it to humans. Once clinical signs appear, rabies is generally fatal. However, the disease is also generally preventable through vaccination. Vaccination helps protect your pet from unnecessary euthanasia or extended quarantine if he or she has contact with a rabies animal. Other forms of rabies prevention include: keeping your pet away from wildlife; ensuring that all other dogs or cats your pet comes in contact with are vaccinated; minimizing contact with stray animals. Do not feed stray animals with unknown vaccination status or allow them to remain near your home and pets. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. ROTARY NEWS

A Little Bit of Southeast France in Weston BY PAT SHORT HORNSBY, WESTON ROTARIAN

D

iminutive in stature with a smile as wide as the Everglades, Clementine Spaethe is a welcome addition to the Rotary Club of Weston’s family. Clem, as she goes by, traveled to south Florida in August 2017 from France to participate in the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program. Her exchange is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Salernes en Haut Var. The teen from Draguignan, a small town in Var, ProvenceAlpes-Côte d Azur, turned 15 only two days before arriving her to spend an entire school year learning another culture and perfecting her English. “I’m not shy anymore,” said Clem when asked if she has changed since coming to Weston. “I think I’m more mature and independent, also.” The leap across time zones and cultures may be a natural path for Clem. Her father is from Germany, her mother from Paris. She has three older siblings — a sister living in London and two half-brothers living in Thailand. Her twin brother is in school back home, where he tackles academics for part of the day and studies wine-making and vineyard husbandry for the remainder — which should come in handy in the near future as Clem’s family lives on and operates a vineyard! While her multi-cultural family background may have set the stage for this young lady’s adven-

ture, her determination to become a world citizen is what sets her, and other young people like her, apart. Clementine spent the first half of the school year living with a Rotarian family in Weston and moved to a second family in a nearby community during winter break. The RYE program encourages hosting clubs to provide two to three host families per student over the course of the school year, to ensure that the student gets a varied picture of daily life and a broader experience. Clem attends Cypress Bay High School and partici-

pates in all the normal teenage activities, in addition to RYE gatherings. The year began with a fun RYE Orientation weekend held at the Lake Yale Conference Center in central Florida. Several dozen incoming RYE students from around the globe gathered to make new friends and learn about what to expect in their new homes and communities. She also enjoyed another great weekend with high school students from around Florida as they participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards seminar at Sea Base in the Florida Keys. There, student government, academic and philanthropic leaders developed communication skills and learned strategies to help them as they take on future leadership roles in their schools and communities. Her favorite activity so far? “Our Disney trip! Of course!” “The hardest part of this year was missing my family in France during the holidays,” said Clem. “But my host families have been wonderful and made the holidays special for me. The best thing has been all the new friends. I’ve met so many nice people and made so many new friends!” If you know a special high school student who would like to live in another country to learn a new culture and language, or if your family would like to host a student from far away, contact Larry DiPietro of the Rotary Club of Weston at larry@ryeflorida.org for more information.
