Weston Students and Families March for Our Lives BY STACEY BOMSER

pproximately 1,000 Weston residents of all ages took part in a peaceful rally at Weston Regional Park as part of the March for Our Lives movement. The event was filled with passionate calls for change and moving tributes to the Parkland shooting victims. “While there were 800-plus sister marches happening throughout the nation, we wanted Parkland, 20 minutes away from us, to know that Weston was supporting them,” explained Gowri Abhinanda, a Tequesta Trace Middle School eighth grader, who helped organize the event. “I wanted to hold a March for Our Lives event in Weston to fight for children’s right to live. It’s important to involve the Weston youth and adult members of our community to make this a movement not a moment in history. We need unity and public support to make our voices heard. The more voices the louder the cry to change.” Gowri’s normally soft-spoken voice was one of the “loudest” at the event. She spoke about the need for common-sense gun reform and declared that students should not have to live in fear anymore. Her speech was filled with well-placed anger of how thoughts and prayers are insufficient. Gowri called for action, stating that people need to set red and blue aside and make compromises for the children of America. Several other local students made passionate pleas at the March. Eleventh grader Taylor Gensolin gave a heartfelt speech about how we must love each other and how she was disappointed that children today must worry about not coming home alive, stating she was hopeful students will lead the change. Tequesta Trace Middle School eighth grader Jaclyn Koran questioned why it is so easy to obtain a military grade weapon. She pointed out that the second amendment was talking about muskets not assault rifles and how times have changed, but the amendment has not changed accordingly. Joseph Mullen, a Cypress Bay sophomore, opened

his speech with a joke about how high school students should fear chemistry, not their safety in school. He pointed out that today’s students are tomorrow’s voters and they will vote to remove assault weapons and politicians who don’t support gun Indian Trace Elementary students with School Resource control efforts. Officer Deputy Gittens at March for Our Lives Weston. Unlike the March for Our Lives event in Washington, D.C., the Weston event featured several adult speakers. Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer, State Representative Richard Stark, Broward County Commissioner Nan Rich and Weston City Commissioner Tom Kallman all shared their support for the cause. Guest speaker Dr. Thomas Brezenski, a professor at St. Thomas University, spoke about his research on the connection between mental health and violence. Master of Ceremony Mary Molina Macfie commended the committee’s tenacity in pulling March for Our Lives Weston together in just ten days. She also pointed out that Weston is a determined city that gets things done, citing the efforts of PTA moms to get police officers and nurses into each Weston school. Entertainment during the event included songs chosen for their moving themes, such as Fight Song by Rachel Platten and Bob Marley’s Redemption Song, performed by students. As a tribute to the 17 students and faculty from Marjory Stoneman Douglas who lost their lives, there were 17 pairs of shoes lined up on stage with a poster reading, “A step closer to gun reform #NeverAgain”. March for Our Lives Weston was also a call for action. There were three scrapbooks at the event and attendees were asked to write messages to be delivered to legislators in Tallahassee. Gowri said more than 450 concerned citizens “wrote their gut-wrenching messages of pain, hope and change such as ‘My arms are made for hugging not hurting.’” Although the March may now be over, Gowri and her peers vow to continue their fight for change. “It was important for me to help lead the youth effort because I wanted to support the kids in Parkland and make sure that no student should go to school in fear.” To learn more about the ongoing efforts by March for Our Lives Weston or to read the scrapbook messages visit www.marchforourlivesweston.org.

Weston Leads Lawsuit Suing State to Regulate Firearms BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he City of Weston is leading a legal battle against the State of Florida to allow cities to regulate firearms. Weston is one of ten South Florida municipalities to file suit against Governor Rick Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi and other State officials. This all stems from calls for gun control following the school shooting in Parkland. Cities would like to be able to ban the sale of Photo courtesy City of Weston. assault weapons in their communities, regulate gun shows at public facilities, and prohibit guns on City property. Florida law currently prohibits local governments from enacting gun safety laws in their own cities. There are severe and unprecedented personal penalties for City officials who violate this including removal from office and a civil fine of up to $5,000. Weston City Attorney Jamie Cole presented the lawsuit which “seeks to invalidate the extreme and extraordinary penalties that deter and chill local officials from even considering reasonable, constitutional firearms regulations in their own communities.”

The lawsuit alleges that the onerous personal penalties for violating the preemption against local regulation of firearms are invalid and unconstitutional because, among other things, they: ▸▸ Conflict with the Governor’s limited power to remove local government officials ▸▸ Violate legislative immunity and separation of powers ▸▸ Violate governmental function immunity ▸▸ Infringe on freedom of speech ▸▸ A re void because they are overly vague ▸▸ Lack rational basis and are arbitrary and capricious ▸▸ Violate the Constitutional right to petition and instruct The ten cities participating in the lawsuit include Weston, Miramar, Pompano Beach, Lauderhill, Miami Gardens, South Miami, Cutler Bay, Pinecrest, Miami Beach and Coral Gables. While attorneys have asked that this case be expedited because of its public importance, officials acknowledge it will likely take years and end up in the Florida Supreme Court.

Weston Has Found Its Niche BY STACEY BOMSER

W

eston has been named the Best Place to Live in Broward County for 2018. Not only that, Weston was also named the Best Place to Raise a Family and the Place with the Best Public Schools according to Niche, an online platform that helps users discover the best neighborhoods and schools. Each year, Niche rigorously analyzes dozens of public data sets and over 100 million reviews and survey responses to help users understand what a place is really like. In order to determine the 2018 Best Places to Live rankings, Niche conducted a comprehensive assessment of the overall livability of each city. This grade took into account several key factors of a location, including the quality of local schools, crime rates, housing trends, employment statistics, and access to amenities in an attempt to measure the overall quality of an area. Weston came out on top with an overall Niche grade of A+. It received highest marks for Good for Families, Diversity, Health & Fitness, Weather, Public Schools, and Outdoor Activities. Not surprisingly, Weston scored average for Cost of Living and Housing, with Niche finding that the median home value and median rent to be about double the national average here. However, the median household income in Weston is almost double the national average at almost $94,000. What really speaks volumes about why Weston is the best place to live is the overwhelming number of five-star reviews from residents. Here is a sampling of the comments submitted to Niche: ▸▸ “Excellent city with excellent people. Located within easy commuting distance of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, this planned community also offers abundant employment options.” ▸▸ “Small city but active community. I’ve absolutely loved growing up here – there’s so much value in the quality of education and public schools, maintenance of public parks, and cycling and being active is a HUGE part of the city which is encouraging for all the residents. Though it’s known as a ‘bubble’ for its perfect landscape and seemingly crime-less record it’s an amazing place for

families to reside in and one of the safest and safest feeling cities you’ll ever stay in.” ▸▸ “Simply the best community to raise kids. Weston has a great selection of schools, sports, and communities. The cost is quite expensive, but many would say it’s worth it.” ▸▸ “Great atmosphere – the vegetation is beautiful, roads are well cared for, and the schools are the best. There are many different cultures Photo courtesy City of Weston. and nationalities in Weston. The parks and restaurants are clean and inviting.” ▸▸ “Growing up in Weston is like growing up on a movie set. Everyone knows each other, super friendly locals, best family-owned businesses, and a beautiful town with lots to do.” Not only did Weston top the charts for Broward County, it dominated the Niche lists for the entire state. Weston was #1 of 160 for Best Places to Raise a Family in Miami Area. It was #5 of 324 for Best Suburbs to Raise a Family in Florida and #10 of 324 for Best Suburbs to Live in Florida. Weston was named #8 of 148 for Safest Suburbs in Florida. As for education, Cypress Bay High School was ranked as #4 of Best Public High Schools in the Miami Area and #262 of Best Public High Schools in America. TripAdvisor Names Weston a Top Town to Visit BY STACEY BOMSER

T

here’s an old expression, “It’s a great place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.” Those of us who call Weston home know that is certainly not the case here. While we all know this is a great place to live, now the world knows Weston is a great place to visit as well. That’s because TripAdvisor just chose Weston as one of its “16 Great Towns to Visit in 2018.” Photos courtesy City of Weston TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, chose 16 small American towns that offer natural beauty, unique attractions, lots of character, great dining, and plenty of local happenings. Weston certainly checks the box for all of that. Each town also offers various types of vacation rentals that provide a great deal for the money, plus plenty of space and comfort. In describing Weston, TripAdvisor wrote “This peaceful Miami suburb is just a half-hour drive from Fort Lauderdale and sits alongside the Everglades. Weston offers walking trails with beautiful views, art festivals, and musical performances throughout the year.” It then went on to cite Weston’s proximity to Miami and all that city has to offer. Mayor Daniel Stermer says it’s an honor to be included on the TripAdvisor list. “It is always wonderful to be acknowledged by others for what we have always known: That Weston is a hometown gem within South Florida’s bustling

tri-county area. As for a tourist destination, Weston has long had timeshare units and hotels where individuals saw the value in enjoying our quiet residential lifestyle within proximity to Fort Lauderdale’s quality beaches, sports venues, the Sawgrass Mills Mall and Miami’s nightlife.” In addition to Weston, the other towns on TripAdvisor’s list of the top U.S. towns to discover this year include: Rogers, Arkansas; Boone, North Carolina; Beaverton, Oregon; Sebastapol, California; Westport, Connecticut; Southport, North Carolina; Telluride, Colorado; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Salida, Colorado; Wellfleet, Massachusetts; Madrid, New Mexico; Folly Beach, South Carolina; Graeagle, California; Abingdon, Virginia; and PinetopLakeside, Arizona. The TripAdvisor list is just one of many accolades the City of Weston has earned recently. It was just named the #8 Safest City in the United States by the real estate website Neighborhood Scout. In addition, for the second year in a row, Weston has been ranked as the #2 Safest City in Florida by the National Council for Home Safety and Security. Even more impressive, Weston was ranked as #3 on its list of the Top 100 Safest Cities in America for 2017.

Symphony of the Americas’ Pops Concert Earns Rave Reviews BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Symphony of the Americas’ outdoor pops concert was a true crowd pleaser with a selection of showtunes and movie scores in addition to traditional pops classics. Around 500 music lovers filled the streets of Weston Town Center for the free concert, which was presented by the City of Weston and the Weston Philharmonic Society. “This event has indeed become a Weston tradition, and it is a pleasure to see families, toddlers, grandparents, and our residents of all ages enjoy a performance by a world-class orchestra,” stated Weston Philharmonic Society Co-Chair Lou Marett. Co-Chair Andrea Burghardt added, “One of our goals is to bring fine music of all genres to our community – and the Symphony of the Americas’ outdoor pops Photos courtesy City of Weston. concert is a top-notch example of this.” The full symphony orchestra, under the baton of lowed by the ever-popular Brahms Fifth Hungarian Dance. A medley of songs from from the silver screen and the best of Broadway. Gypsy, Phantom of the Opera and Funny Girl closed out the The show opened with the rousing Can-Can folfirst half of the performance.

After a brief intermission, the orchestra presented a salute to the silver screen with a medley of theme songs from blockbuster movies including Star Wars, Jaws, Superman and Raiders of the Lost Ark. That was followed by a few tunes from The Producers. The energy grew with Guantanamera, The Washington Post march, and the Tritsch-Tratsch Polka, with rounds of applause ringing through the streets after the encore finale of John Philip Sousa’s patriotic pops classic, Stars and Stripes Forever. Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation, called the outdoor pops concert one of the most enjoyable nights of the year. “It’s a treat for the entire family to be outside enjoying the music. The Symphony of the Americas had the crowd tapping their toes and singing along to popular Broadway and Hollywood tunes, but it was their finale of Stars and Stripes Forever that had everyone on their feet.” In July, select members of the Symphony of the Americas will return to Weston, along with noted international musicians, for the Summerfest concert.

Weston Foreign Film Series Continues to Flourish BY STACEY BOMSER

P

lans are already in the works for the 2018-2019 Weston Foreign Film Series, presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston. It will be tough to top this past season, which has been declared the “best 2017-2018 Weston Foreign season ever” with each screening Film Series Committee selling-out. The Weston Foreign Film Series started in 2006 after the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival asked Weston to be one of its sites. Under the leadership of President Rochelle Koenig, the Arts Council of Greater Weston immediately stepped up to the challenge, presenting a four-film program at the Weston Branch Library. The program was wildly popular, with films such as Three Men and a Leg  from Italy and The Last Train from Argentina. By the end of the first season, it was clear a larger venue was needed. Inaugural Foreign Film Series Chair Muriel Fields contacted the owners of the Weston 8 Cinema and the program was moved to the theater for the following season. A fifth movie was also added to the series. Within a year, demand outgrew a single showing in one auditorium, so the Arts Council started offering two showings of each film. Because of the renovations after AMC Theatres bought the cinema, the Weston Foreign Film Series now offers two showings of each film in two auditoriums, at 4:45pm and 7:30pm.

According to Arts Council of Greater Weston President Jami Nix Rahn, “The success of this series and the desire for this type of entertainment in Weston is reflected in the sell-out crowds that we continue to draw each season.” Former Foreign Film Series Chair Norma Sonnenklar believes part of the program’s popularity is due to the multi-cultural appeal. “The success of the film series is owed to our commitment to include a variety of genres – comedy, mystery, drama – from a variety of countries. Each year more and more residents have attended, showing the wonderful community reception to this event highlighting diversity.” For the past few years, the Arts Council has screened and selected its films. Current Foreign Film Series Chair Irene Carraway says that is a lengthy process. “The committee starts meeting in the spring and begins previewing many, many foreign films that have been suggested by multiple sources. Always considering our audience, each member of the committee rates the movies and then the highest rated films are selected, making sure that each is from a different country.” Over the years, the selection has spanned the globe with film selections including For My Father from Israel, Belle Epoque from Spain, Gloomy Sunday from Germany, The Well Digger’s Daughter from France, and King of Masks from China. All films feature English subtitles. The 2018-2019 Weston Foreign Film Series will offer five films, with one presented each month, November through March. To learn more visit www.1weston.com.

Weston University Program Talks Tech and Money BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Weston University program wrapped up with a class on government budgeting and finance, as well as technology services. The day began with a lesson in fiscal responsibility. Weston Budget Director Bryan Cahen spoke to the students about Weston’s budget process. He explained how the budget is managed and approved by the City Commission each fiscal year, with input from residents. Accounting Manager Cindy Tao then talked about her department’s responsibilities. Next up, Ryan Fernandes, Director of Technology Services, spoke about Information Technology services, including insider knowledge about Weston’s Technology Services Data Center. After a lunch break, which included a pick-up game of frisbee, the students selected their roles for the City Commission Simulation. It is the culminating activity for the Weston University program. Each student was assigned a role to play, with some taking on the responsibilities of the Mayor and City Commissioners, while others will play the parts of various City Department leaders or the Police and Fire Chief.

Photos courtesy City of Weston.

Communications Staff Assistant Daniela Cediel, a former Weston University student, provided a comprehensive review of the simulation agenda, taking students through each item and explaining how their roles will play out as Denise Barrett-Miller, the City’s Director of Communications and Weston University Program Director supervised, along with Assistant Director Pam Solomon.

“During the mock City Commission meeting, it is hoped that students will draw on their experiences interacting with city departments over the past six months. They will review, debate and vote on real items that have been brought before the Commission as well as discuss current and relevant topics of interest to get the student perspective,” stated Barrett-Miller. The Weston University program provides a unique civic education to high school students. Once a month, participating students spend time interacting with city leaders and participating in handson activities while exploring the various departments and agencies that make up our local government. It is open to juniors, seniors and select sophomores attending Cypress Bay High School, Western High School, The Sagemont School, as well as home schooled students. Applications for the Weston U Class of 2019 will be available at the start of the school year. xecuting a deep clean before putting your home on the market will not only help it shine, but it will make tidiness easier to maintain between showings. Here are some power-cleaning tips to try:

Clean windows make a huge difference. Remove window screens and place them outside on a tarp or other clean, waterproof surface. Use a garden hose, an all-purpose cleaner, and a soft brush to gently clean the screens. You don’t need anything special to polish up window glass; just mix a solution of one-part white vinegar to eight parts water, plus a drop or two of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle. Wipe with newspaper to avoid streaks. The fridge is the most common source of kitchen smells. Check the drip tray underneath your refrigerator and wash out any standing water from defrosting. Scrub the inside of the fridge with a baking soda and water solution. Activated charcoal in the fridge can help keep odors at bay.

Think outside the house. It’s amazing the difference a sparkling entryway makes to your home’s curb appeal. Wipe down your front door, give the doormat a good shake/vacuum, and make sure dust and dirt haven’t collected on outdoor furniture. Use a pressure washer to give your driveway and garage floor a good cleaning. The acidity in dark cola drinks can help remove oil, rust, and grease stains, along with a little elbow grease. Target the Bathroom. For tile floors, apply your usual cleaner and then run a wet/ dry vac, which will suck contaminants out of the grout. Pour a quarter cup each of baking soda and vinegar down the drains, leaving the concoction overnight, then flush with boiling water. Clean soap scum and mildew from plastic shower curtains by tossing them into your washer on the gentle cycle in cold water with detergent and ½ cup vinegar (if mildew is present, add ½ cup of bleach instead of vinegar). Put a couple of large towels into the machine to act as scrubbers. Allow the curtain to drip-dry on the rod. Wash the walls. Grease, smoke, and dust can adhere to walls and make even the best decorating look dingy. Resist the temptation to spot-clean since it will make the rest of the wall look dirtier. Mop walls using a general-purpose cleaner diluted with hot water. Start at the top corner of the wall to avoid drips. Don’t press too hard and rinse the mop head frequently in clean water. Use melamine foam cleaner to erase scuffs and stains. A quick vacuum of the ceiling is also recommended. Clean the grout on tile floors. Apply a paste of two parts baking soda to onepart hydrogen peroxide to your dingy grout lines, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub it with a cleaning brush. After you’ve scrubbed the stains away, use a wet rag to wipe away the paste. Organize. Pare down clutter and pack up your least-used items, such as large blenders and other kitchen tools, out-of-season clothes, toys, and seasonal items. Remove personal photos and furniture cabinets holding collections. Remember, less is more. Courtney Silverman has been a Realtor with The Keyes Company since 2004. MAYOR’S MESSAGE

It’s Great To Be A Weston Resident BY DANIEL J. STERMER, MAYOR, CITY OF WESTON

I

t is with great pride that I advise residents and business owners that the City of Weston was ranked #8 in the Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. by NeighborhoodScout. Weston is one of only three cities in Florida on the list. This recognition honors the accomplishments of our police force and law enforcement efforts, and our resident’s participation in being alert and calling in suspicious activities. Being a safe community to live and raise our children in is one of Weston’s top priorities and I am pleased to say this goal continues to be met. I would like to commend Weston Police Chief Kevin Butler and the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office for the work they do each day on behalf of our residents, businesses and guests. I encourage you, our residents, to stay vigilant: lock car doors and lock your homes; school is almost out so watch for more children out playing, bike riding and crossing streets; and always call in suspicious activity. One of the extra security measures available to Weston residents from BSO is a daily home safety check when the resident is out of town. With summer vacation season rapidly approaching, I encourage you to take advantage of this program by calling the Weston District Office at 954-389-2010 or printing out the form at http://www.westonfl.org/media/docs/misc/2017_Home_Watch_Request.pdf. Another tip: don’t advertise you are out of town on social media. Unfortunately, it’s not only your friends who might be watching. Volunteerism and community service engage citizens, improve lives and strengthen communities. In April, we honored our Weston Volunteers during National Volunteer Week. In May, a very special individual in our community, Mrs. Renee Smoley, affectionately known as ‘The Mother of Weston’ will be inducted into the Broward Senior Hall of Fame. Renee is an avid and active volunteer at 93 years young and I want to extend a very special thank you for all she has done for our – and her – City of Weston. Congratulations on this much deserved recognition.

he traditional Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through November 30, with the peak around mid-August to late October. South Florida experienced destructive effects from hurricanes during the 2017 season. Many residents are still recovering due to damage to homes and businesses. Last year, we saw 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and six major hurricanes. This year, weather and tropic cyclone experts are predicting a slightly above average Atlantic hurricane season. Colorado State University is predicting 14 named storms for 2018, slightly above the average of 12. Of those 14 storms, Colorado State University is predicting only six storms will reach hurricane strength. Three hurricanes are predicted to be major hurricanes. In spite of the expert’s hurricane activity predictions, we can all be reminded that it only takes one hurricane to produce catastrophic impacts to our community. In 1992, for example, Hurricane Andrew devastated south Florida during a belownormal hurricane activity season. There were only seven named storms that year. We have also learned since Hurricane Andrew that early preparedness is the key. Every family in Weston should be prepared to be self-sufficient for the first three to five days after a major storm so recovery efforts can focus on those who cannot help themselves. Here are some other helpful hurricane preparedness tips: ▸▸ Plan in advance. Weston is not in an evacuation zone, and it is unlikely that there will be a mandatory evacuation. However, if you think you might want to leave ahead of a storm, make your evacuation plan now. Know where you will be going and the route and mode of transportation you will take. Have a plan for any family pets also. Public shelters are a refuge of last resort. ▸▸ If evacuating out of the area, leave early. Plan to leave at least 48 hours in advance, and no later than the issuance of a hurricane watch. ▸▸ Identify a safe room. If you plan to stay at home, identify the safest room in your home. This is generally an interior room with no windows, such as a bathroom or closet. Make plans to take shelter in this room in the event of a direct hit. ▸▸ Prepare your hurricane kit. Plan on supplies including food and water that will sustain your family for three to five days, as well as a two-week supply of medicine. The Emergency Refill Law now allows you to obtain a 30-day supply of medications when an emergency is declared. A complete hurricane kit checklist is available from the Broward Emergency Management Division at http://www. broward.org/hurricane/Pages/Default.aspx ▸▸ Document your assets. Make a visual or written record of your assets for insurance purposes. Photographing the exterior of your home prior to the storm is also a good practice. ▸▸ Protect important papers. Protect important family and financial documents, such as insurance policies, inside weatherproof containers or in watertight resealable plastic bags. ▸▸ Secure your home. Shutter windows and glass doors. Anchor loose yard objects or bring them inside. ▸▸ Prepare a water supply. As the storm approaches, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with clean water for bathing and flushing toilets. ▸▸ Set Appliances. Turn refrigerators and freezers to the highest settings in anticipation of a power outage. ▸▸ Get cash. Banks and ATM’s do not operate without electricity. ▸▸ Get Gasoline. Fill your tank(s) before the storm. Gas pumps do not work without electricity. ▸▸ Charge your phone. Charge all wireless phones and extra batteries before an approaching hurricane. It only takes one hurricane or tropical storm to significantly disrupt our way of life. We should all take action now to prepare our families for this hurricane season. Early planning and knowing what to do now can literally save your life and help you and your family bounce back stronger and faster should a hurricane disaster strike our area. For more information, please contact District Chief Bruce Angier at Fire Station 81 at (954) 3892015 or by email at bruce_angier@sheriff.org.

BY STACEY BOMSER

or nearly 15 years, Broward Tutorial Services has helped students achieve academic success in the classroom and on the SAT and ACT college entrance exams. It is the area’s leading provider of college entrance test preparation tutoring. Founder and Owner Michael Eldeiry, and Director of Academics Adam Moss, answered some commonly asked questions about Broward Tutorial Services’ programs and success strategies. What is Broward Tutorial Services? We are Broward County’s premier test prep company for the ACT, SAT and PSAT. We work with students at all levels to help them reach their highest potential. We offer exceptional small group and private one-on-one tutoring as well as one-day workshops to help students prepare for these critical exams. In addition, we offer subject tutoring primarily for high school students. What are the SAT and ACT and why are they so important? The SAT and ACT are standardized tests required for entrance to most competitive colleges and universities. They are commonly taken by students in their junior and senior years of high school. Both tests are accepted equally by all institutions. How does a student know which test to take? The best way to really know which test is right is to have the student take a diagnostic test, which combines half of each test and provides both a baseline score for each and a comparison of which test is better for the student. The SAT is a shorter, less time constrained test with harder reading and more algebra, while the ACT has a stricter time limit and a

science section devoted to reading charts and graphs, which can intimidate some students. Another good way to determine which test is better for a student is to have them take each test. What is the timeline to prepare for the exams? We like our students to begin as early as possible in their junior year, and many students start during the summer between their sophomore and junior year. Most students have to take the tests a few times to achieve their maximum score, so waiting until the end of junior year or senior year is not a great idea. We encourage students to start with the diagnostic test to see which test is better for them, and then begin with a group class. In the end, every student is different. Lisa Cohen, our Office Manager and Higher Education Advisor, talks to parents and students to personalize a plan for

“We work with students at all levels to help them reach their highest potential.”

each student. What do students learn from your program? Students learn all the strategies for how to excel on the standardized test they are taking. We also review the material on which they are being tested. Standardized tests cover most of high school math, so students often need to review some things they haven’t seen since middle school. Students also need to learn how to approach these tests, as they are very different from the tests they are used to in school. What kinds of results can students expect after completing the program? That depends on several factors, most of all on how much work the student puts in to practicing the techniques we teach them. It’s not unusual for students who work hard in our class to improve between 200 and 500 points on the SAT and from three to eight points on the ACT. What are the benefits to test preparation? Higher SAT and ACT scores are the second most important factor (behind grades) for admission into college. High scores may also result in both private and school-sponsored scholarship money, including Florida Bright Futures, and placement into higher classes once at college. What distinguishes Broward Tutorial Services from other test prep programs? Broward Tutorial Services was founded in 2004 on a simple premise: all test preparation and tutoring programs are only as good as the teacher. Our team of tutors has spent extensive time studying the tests, analyzing the mistakes students make, and uncovering the traps that test writers like to set. n Broward Tutorial Services is located at 2883 Executive Park Drive, Suite 104. For more information on the tutors and the company, call 954-667-6500 or visit www.BrowardTutorial.com.

“Sunshine at the Park” Shines Light on Suicide Awareness and Prevention BY STACEY BOMSER

M

ore than 300 supporters turned out for the third annual “Sunshine at the Park” event, hosted by the Dylan Schopp Sunshine Foundation. The event raised more than $40,000 for suicide awareness and prevention causes. The Dylan Schopp Sunshine Foundation was created in Dylan’s memory by his family to spread positivity and hope through community outreach and public awareness of suicide prevention. It’s mission and vision are to celebrate Dylan’s life and help his spirit and energy live on, in hope of preventing similar tragedies. “Every year we receive more and more support from friends, family and the community,” said Foundation Director Debbie Schopp. “We started the Foundation at our kitchen table. Everyone involved, from the attendees to the volunteers and sponsors, have played a pivotal role in helping raise awareness and support for suicide prevention and allowing Dylan’s light to continue to shine.” The “Sunshine at the Park” event was full of light. The family-friendly event featured YMCA-led games, a Zumba class, karate demonstration, dance performance, children’s activities, rock climbing wall, food

trucks and more. The event concluded with a butterfly release in honor of Dylan and those who have lost their lives to suicide. Proceeds from the event will benefit suicide prevention organizations including the HOPE Sunshine Clubs operated in partnership with Weston-based Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP), 2-1-1, the health, human and social service hotline, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. “When we started this event, we never imagined it would become such a huge part of our community,” shared Schopp. “We hope that with the funds raised this year, we will continue to raise awareness and support various suicide prevention and mental health programs.” “Sunshine at the Park” was held at Markham Park. It is an important location for the Schopp family because it was one of Dylan’s favorite spots to enjoy time outdoors, jet skiing and mountain biking with his father. The park’s Butterfly Garden is also home to a dedicated bench in Dylan’s honor where family and friends often visit.

30th Annual Memorial Day Classic Salutes Soldiers BY STACEY BOMSER

E

xcitement is running high for the 30th annual Memorial Day Classic at Weston. The 5K race, which honors our nation’s fallen heroes, takes place on Monday, May 28th at Weston Town Center. Split Second Timing started the race 30 years ago as a free event for the residents of Weston; this was back before Weston was even a city. Although there is now a nominal charge to participate, and the race has grown astronomically, it’s still a hometown event. “The Memorial Day Classic is Weston’s oldest community event,” states Josh Stern, President/CEO of Split Second Timing. “We have many runners who have done the race every single year. It’s something they look forward to doing to support the Weston community and our soldiers.” As the last official race of the U.S.A. Track and Field season in Broward County, the race attracts 2,500-3,000 runners. But Stern says it also brings out many families enjoying the day together. “We have one family, there’s eleven of them, and they all get together to race as a family. The grandpa has done this 5K every year.” In addition to Weston families and runners from all over, about 500 active duty soldiers will run in the Memorial Day Classic. Stern pays for their participation as a way of thanking them for their service. Split Second Timing also puts on a free race for the soldiers at the U.S. Southern Command in Doral. That event is held in conjunction with the Army’s birthday,

which is about two weeks after the Memorial Day Classic. The Soldiers Final Mile is another way the Weston race honors the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. “It pays tribute to all the fallen heroes that gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country,” states Stern. “The Soldiers Final Mile is like a race within a race. When runners get to the 2.1 mile mark, with one mile left, they can run it all out in memory of those who lost their lives in battle.” All Memorial Day Classic runners will receive a commemorative 30th anniversary medal designed by Stern featuring an aircraft carrier with fighter jets and a military dog tag. In addition, awards will be given to the top finishers in each age category. After the race, everyone is invited to visit the Sponsor Village and Expo at Weston Town Center. Stern is hoping a military jet flyover will add to the excitement of the race. While he applies each year, he’s hopeful the Pentagon will grant the F16 flyover because this is the event’s 30th anniversary. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed. We won’t know until the day of; they just show up,” explains Stern. “After the 21st annual race started, we heard a roar of jets fly high overhead, a few seconds later they came back and buzzed the roof of Weston Town Center and broke the sound barrier. Car alarms were going off. It was the coolest thing ever!” Registration is now open for the Memorial Day Classic at Weston at www.splitsecondtiming.com/30th-annual-memorial-day-classic-at-weston. The race starts at 7:15am behind Weston Town Center.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 5/31/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. Protecting Yourself at the Pump BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK

M

any Floridians travel to see friends and family during the summer season, and the U.S. Department of Transportation reports that about 91 percent of long-distance vacation travel is by a personal vehicle. It’s imperative to take precautions against scammers aiming to profit off of summer travel. Card skimmers are small, electronic devices that capture information from the magnetic strip on credit or debit cards when swiped during a transaction. Over 900 of these skimmers have been found on gas pumps in Florida since March 2015, and individual skimmers have been found to hold as many as 100 credit card numbers. These devices were commonly attached to card readers on the outside of the pump, but some criminals now install skimmers inside the pump and use Bluetooth technology to transmit card and pin information. These devices are undetectable unless the pump is opened for maintenance or inspection. A skimmer may also be present on any device that scans a credit or debit card. Skimmers at gas pumps are a growing threat, but some simple checks – and now even your smartphone – can cut the risk that your card data will be stolen when you’re filling up. Before you put your card in any gas pump, look for a broken seal, jiggle the card reader, and check your cellphone’s Bluetooth to see if there is an unexpected, suspicious signal, experts say. Skimmers are popping up across the country, and here’s why: ▸▸ Skimming technology is becoming more sophisticated. Skimmers once were large-ish devices installed over the real card reader and recognizable as out of place by discerning gas station patrons. Now, they’re as small as a thumb drive, hidden inside the pump and nearly impossible to detect. ▸▸ Fueling stations remain vulnerable targets. Gas stations received a three-year extension to update pumps with chip-card readers, which accommodates credit cards with fraud-resistant electronic chips. That means card skimmers will be a threat at the pumps until at least October 2020. Here are a few tips that will reduce your risk of encountering skimmers at the pump: ▸▸ Pay inside with either cash or a credit card. ▸▸ Use a pre-paid cash card to pay for your gas at the pump. ▸▸ Do not use a pump that looks as though it has been tampered with. ▸▸ Use the pumps closest to the front of the station, as scammers usually place skimmers in pumps furthest out of sight. ▸▸ Monitor your credit and bank accounts regularly for unauthorized activity. If you identify unauthorized activity on your accounts, contact your bank or credit card company, file a report with local authorities, and consider placing a credit freeze or fraud alert on your accounts. Wherever your travel takes you these next several months, stay safe! State Representative Richard Stark (D – Weston) represents House District 104 which includes all of Weston. You can reach Rep. Stark at RichardStark@myflorida.gov or by calling his legislative office at 954-217-0287.

CAN DO KIDS

Girl Scout Troop Delivers Hope to Hurricane Victims BY STACEY BOMSER

I

t’s been over eight months since Hurricane Irma ripped a path of destruction through the Florida Keys. Homeowners there are slowly rebuilding and getting back to normalcy, thanks in part to a Girl Scout troop from Weston. Following the storm, the Brownies, Juniors and Cadets of Troop 10259 wanted to help with the recovery efforts, but it was deemed too dangerous to enter the region. So they looked for a way to help from here at home. “We reached out to a wonderful organization called Kids of the Florida Keys,” explained Kayla Dinda, a sixth grader at Tequesta Trace Middle School. “We asked what they needed, and the director informed me that almost everyone on a block they were helping lost their mailbox.” Kayla said that seemed like something the troop could help with, so she

reached out to major mailbox retailers asking for donations. Wayfair immediately stepped up, offering 25 mailboxes; all the girls needed for one street. But, Kayla says the company was overly generous, actually sending 50 mailboxes. The girls of Troop 10259 took a day trip down to the Keys to distribute the mailboxes. Kayla says it was an incredible feeling to help these families who were still struggling to recover from the hurricane, many of whom were using makeshift mailboxes made from buckets and other items. “They were so happy! Some of them cried. Some donated things to help pay it forward. Some asked for boxes for their neighbors that lost everything. It showed a real sense of community.”

That trip also inspired the girls to help some of the smallest victims of Hurricane Irma, the Key Deer. While delivering mailboxes to homes on No Name Key a few baby deer approached and the girls were able to pet them. “We are now working with the National Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine Key,” noted Kayla. “These Key Deer are the most amazing tiny deer, about the size of a Golden Retriever. They graze along the side of the road, which unfortunately is the leading cause of death for these deer. Because of the storm, a lot of the speed limit signs were blown away. We are working on ways to rebuild and inform drivers that they are in an endangered species habitat, so please obey the speed limit.” Kayla says doing community service projects like these are an important part of Girl Scouts. “We’re 2.6 million strong – 1.8 million girls and 800,000 adults who believe in the power of every GIRL (go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, leader) to change the world.”

Gator Run Third Graders Curate Math Knowledge at Fraction Museum BY STACEY BOMSER

F

ractions are a difficult math concept for many students to master. For years, teachers have used manipulatives such as blocks and pies to illustrate fractions. Gator Run Elementary Third Grade Teacher Laura Rush took that a step further. She had her students create their own Fraction Museum. “Fractions are an important aspect of math in the real world. So, to better check my students’ depth of knowledge of fractions, I decided to conduct an activity that would allow me to assess and differentiate learning, but with a unique twist,” explains Mrs. Rush. “I used this lesson as the culminating activity for the end of our fraction unit, but before the final assessment. My students would apply what they learned about fractions to create their own Fraction Museum.” Mrs. Rush credits the lesson to a Scholastic YouTube video she watched by master math teacher Bob Krech (a.k.a. “Math Man”). Using manipulatives, each student had to create their own museum displaying ten fraction exhibits, as well as a ‘mystery exhibit’ that their classmates would have to solve. While the students were busy building their fraction exhibits, Mrs. Rush was able to assess their grasp of the subject. “I was able to intervene on those students that were having trouble by asking them to show me more common fractions like ½, ¼ and ¾ for practice and better understanding. I observed my

more advanced students displaying two or three equivalent fractions using different manipulatives such as 3⁄₆, ⁶/₁₂ and ⁹⁄₁₈. They clearly understood so I pushed them further, asking them to show and display more complex fractions.” Once all the exhibits had been created, the students paired up and took turns visiting each other’s museum. “Because they had to explain each exhibit (fraction) to their partner, there was an amazing amount of learning going on,” shares Mrs. Rush. Afterwards, the students were free to visit other fraction museums around the classroom. “By having the freedom to visit their classmates’ museums, it allowed students to explore, discuss and visually see fractions that they may have never thought of,” notes Mrs. Rush. “They thoroughly enjoyed trying to solve some of the more difficult mystery fraction exhibits.” This was the first time Mrs. Rush has incorporated this hands-on learning activity into her curriculum. She says it was a huge success. “The fraction museum activity was not only a fun way for my students to show what they know, but also an amazing way for them to communicate with each other by using words to explain their fractions. I definitely plan on using the Fraction Museum in the future.”

Awards Add Up for Falcon Cove Math Club BY STACEY BOMSER

J

ust like any competitive sport, practice makes perfect. That’s certainly true this season for the Falcon Cove Math Club, which has taken home an unprecedented number of awards this season. According to Kami McLaughlin, Math Team Advisor and Falcon Cove Middle School Algebra teacher, the Falcon Cove Math Club is comprised of 118 students in grades six through eight, plus one fifth grader. The students prepare for competition by practicing old tests and quizzing each other. Ms. McLaughlin says the students also work ahead in their coursework. The Math Club has claimed some impressive wins at local and state competitions this year. “At the Math Olympiad, we had three students earn perfect scores for the first time ever, earning 25 out of the total 25 points,” explains Ms. McLaughlin. “Congratulations to Albert Wang, Andrei Chekmasov, and Priyanka Adhikari.” At Math Counts, Falcon Cove was the first-place team and won first place for Cyphering in the county. Ms. McLaughlin adds that

the school had the top four individuals at the competition and also earned Coach of the Year.   “At the State level, we took third place and our top student, Albert Wang, came in sixth place individually,” she notes. “We also had two students qualify for the AIME competition, which is for students who scored in the top 2.5% nationally on the AMC 10.” To date, the Falcon Cove Math Club has earned a total of eleven team trophies for Mu Alpha Theta, including three first place Algebra trophies. Ms. McLaughlin says watching her students get excited about the material and seeing how they light up when their hard work pays off is the most rewarding part of her job. “These kids put in a lot of time outside of school to prepare for the competitions. It’s their hard work and dedication that helps them become so successful at these competitions.” She encourages other students to join the Math Club. “Competitive math helps develop critical thinking skills. It is a great way for students to socialize with students with similar interests. The students work so hard together and push each other to achieve more than they would be able to achieve individually.”

CAMP SPOTLIGHT

Summer Fun Starts at Camp Nova BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or more than 35 years, Camp Nova at NSU University School has been providing campers a summer full of smiles, laughs, fun with new friends, and plenty of good memories. This summer promises plenty of exciting new experiences for kids of all ages and interests. Director of Summer and Extended Programs Bryon Rostanzo shares more about what’s in store this summer at Camp Nova. What can families expect at Camp Nova? Camp Nova is open to children in kindergarten through 11th grade. A camper’s summer experience includes swimming in a state-of-the-art aquatics center (swim lessons are provided for non-swimmers entering kindergarten and first grade), interactive Terrific Tuesday and Wacky Wednesday events, weekly field trips, and exciting in-house activities. From electronic game design, ceramics, and cake decorating to coding, archery and a variety of sports, there really is something for everyone at Camp Nova! What kinds of programs do you offer? Our Minnow and Shark Camps are for children in kindergarten through 8th grade. In addition, Camp Nova also offers a number of specialty camps for students in 2nd through 8th grade. Sports camp options include

smile

baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Camp Nova also offers chess, drobot (drones), magic, marine science, theatre, teen travel, counselor in training, and even an overnight camp option. What are the credentials of Camp Nova counselors? All Camp Nova counselors go through an extensive interview process. Junior Counselors must have completed 10th grade and have a minimum of one to two years working with children. Most of our Senior Counselors have at least two years of experience working with children in a school and/or camp setting. Many even have a degree in childhood education and are certified teachers. What is your Summer Scholars program? The Summer Scholars program is for both public and private school students in elementary, middle and high school and provides campers with an opportunity to enrich their summer with learning experiences in reading, mathematics, foreign language, writing, and language arts within a challenging and supportive environment. Summer Scholars offers

students the ability to advance academically by earning extra credits during the summer, make-up academic credits, or simply enter the next grade level with confidence through various refresher courses. Our faculty understand that every child learns in his or her own way, so they continually develop instructional approaches to reach every learner. When does Camp Nova run? Camp Nova takes place on the NSU University School Campus. It offers four two-week sessions running June 11th through August 3rd. A Post Camp, offering daily field trips, runs August 6th through 17th. Campers can sign up for complete sessions or simply choose a day here and there. Siblings receive 10% off. For more information about Camp Nova at NSU University School call 954-262-4506 or visit www.uschool.nova.edu/summer.

Manatee Bay Book Drive Helps Build School Libraries BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents at Manatee Bay Elementary School have learned a very valuable lesson this semester, and it’s not something that comes from a text book. Rather, the children learned compassion, commitment and the importance of literacy. The Student Council is sponsoring a schoolwide book drive to collect books to send to rural communities in the Philippines. “Many of the schools there do not have sufficient amounts of books to have a complete library,” explains Student Council Coordinator and 5th Grade Teacher Jennifer Ramos. “Our donations will help build libraries in these schools in the Philippines.” She says the idea for the community service project came from a Manatee Bay family. “Arlene and Scott

Richards reached out to us to participate in their efforts through their company, ConnectEd.” ConnectEd will ship all the donated books and distribute them to schools in the Philippines. According to Mrs. Ramos, students in that country learn to read English. The Student Council has been coordinating the book drive effort. The children made posters, which are displayed around the school, promoting the book drive. Announcements are also being made each morning and afternoon. Plus, an email blast was sent to all Manatee Bay families requesting donations of books appropriate for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Mrs. Ramos says it is important to get children involved in community service. “Students need to learn how to give back

to their community. By participating in community service projects, it allows them to learn how to help others that may be less fortunate than them. They are learning selfless acts.” In addition to the book drive, the Student Council participated in the Weston Relay For Life. To help raise money for the American Cancer Society, Mrs. Ramos says the Student Council sponsored a “Caps on Cancer Day”, where students could wear a hat to school and donate to the Manatee Bay Elementary Student Council Relay team.

To prepare for the adjudication, Dor says the band has been holding afterschool rehearsals, in addition to its normal school day rehearsals. Each band is also working with distinguished guests and clinicians. For the assessments, the Wind Ensemble has played Pas Redouble, Molly on the Shore, and Movement for Rosa, while the Symphonic Band has performed Peacemaker March, Ammerland, and Songs of Old Kentucky. Making it to the state level is an impressive feat for the Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder Band, especially because this is its first season with the new band leaders. The last time the top two performing groups received Superiors was in 2013, and the last time both groups traveled to perform at the state level MPA was in 2006.

s we age, so do the support structures of our skin. The loss of facial collagen decreases the skin’s elasticity, volume, and moisture-retaining qualities, bestowing upon us those telltale signs of maturing facial tissue — marionette lines, droopy jowls and a saggy chin or jaw. But here’s the good news: today there are a multitude of non-invasive treatment options that can effectively minimize the unwelcome appearance of excessive or loose skin around the chin and jawline, returning definition to the face, and helping you reclaim a more youthful appearance (no time machine required!). Non-surgical, injectable treatments: Adding volume to skin that’s beginning to sag can be a great, non-invasive option for those of us challenged by gravity. Sculptra, an injectable, long-lasting volumizer, is a great option for eliminating marionette or deep smile lines, helping to fill in and lift the skin around the mouth, chin and jawline. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), Sculptra, has the added benefit of stimulating the body’s natural collagen production. When more volume is necessary, hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm and Restylane may be used. These fillers can be very successful in helping reverse agerelated midface volume loss (volume loss in the cheek area) by contouring and lifting the skin to give a very natural looking result. Although more commonly used in the upper facial area, a minimal amount of Botox can also be used to correct lines near the mouth or unwanted dimples or bumps around the chin and neck. Non-surgical, radiofrequency treatments: Another non-invasive option for tightening and smoothing mild to moderately sagging skin is the use of microneedling radiofrequency treatment, such as the Infini. These treatments use a specialized device to deliver a dose of radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis, stimulating your body’s natural collagen production and giving you the equivalent of a non-surgical “facelift.” In addition to generally tightening and volumizing the skin, radiofrequency treatment is especially effective in lifting your jowls, treating wrinkles around the cheeks, and improving your skin’s overall texture. In the event of severe volume loss in the jowl or chin area, surgery may be the only fully corrective option. While thicker, injectable fillers can penetrate deep into the dermis and give some lift to troublesome spots, they may not be effective enough to fully correct more complicated anatomy. Consult a plastic surgeon for more information on your options. Everything from genetics to sun exposure can play a role in how the face ages. Luckily, an incredible array of non-surgical, minimally invasive options are now available to help boost your self-confidence and restore harmony to your mind, body and spirit. Dr. Tamy M. Faierman is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and founder of the new Tamy M. Faierman Holistic Spa and Wellness Center. Her office is located at 17130 Royal Palm Boulevard, Suite 1, in the Windmill Professional Campus. For more information, please call her office at 954-322-2742 or visit www.reshapeyourimage.com.

Watchman , a new treatment to prevent stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib) TM

A new alternative to blood thinners Atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, is among the leading causes of stroke in the United States. The WatchmanTM procedure, a new treatment option approved by the FDA, can reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib).

The Watchman procedure takes about one hour, is performed through a catheter and requires only a local anesthetic. The Watchman device is used to close the left atrial appendage where 90 to 95 percent of the clots form in patients with non-valvular AFib. The risk of the procedure is low, and patients typically go home the morning after the procedure.

Watchman, a surgical procedure which includes the implantation of a device, is good news for the millions of people affected by AFib, whose stroke risk is four to five times higher compared to the general population. Robert J. Cubeddu, MD Treatment with Watchman might prevent approximately 750,000 annual hospitalizations due to strokes related to AFib.

Currently, Watchman is the only approved interventional treatment for closure of the left atrial appendage for stroke prevention. Aside from the reduction in stroke, the major advantage of the Watchman procedure is the ability of the patient to stop taking blood thinners permanently.

Preventing the disability associated with stroke is imperative, especially since strokes caused by AFib tend to be more severe than those that are attributed to other causes. Plus, with the increase in the population of aging boomers, the number of AFib-related stroke victims is expected to rise significantly. According to Dr. Robert J. Cubeddu, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida, AFib is very common among patients over 65 years of age, and is therefore prevalent in South Florida, a retirement hub. Most patients with AFib are currently taking blood thinners also known as anticoagulants. “Blood thinners are required for a lifetime, and their use is often limited by their side-effects, and the need for regular bloodwork and strict adherence to medication protocols,” said Dr. Cubeddu. “In addition to those side-effects, several studies have suggested that up to 40 percent of patients with AFib are poor candidates for the blood thinners due to a history of internal bleeding, a diagnosis of peptic ulcer or cancer, or even a risk for falls.” In other words, many people with AFib need new treatment options.

To find out if Watchman is the right treatment for you, schedule an evaluation with Dr. Cubeddu, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/heart.

F

ear of the unknown is the primary reason many people delay seeking the help of a chiropractic doctor. What can you expect when visiting a chiropractor for the first time? As a new chiropractic patient, the office staff will welcome and acquaint you to the office. They will take a detailed history of your complaint and health status, including other symptoms or health problems, and past accidents, injuries and illnesses that may have had an effect on your present condition. A good history is important for an accurate diagnosis of your problem. On your first visit the chiropractor will do a thorough examination of your complaint. This will include a postural assessment, pertinent orthopedic, neurological and other tests, and specific joint and muscle evaluation. X-rays may be taken if they are considered to be necessary. Your doctor will then discuss the findings of the examination and x-rays.

Providing you with an easily understood diagnosis of your condition is an important part of your chiropractic care. Your chiropractic doctor will then discuss the various treatment options available to you. A well-informed patient is one of the main goals of every chiropractor, and you will be encouraged to ask questions throughout your care. Following the review of your examination findings, the diagnosis of your condition and discussion of treatment, the doctor will provide you with recommendations for care, which will include a detailed plan of treatment and reassessment. Chiropractors consider the re-examination to be a very important component of patient care for it enables a consistent and objective evaluation of a patient’s progress. Once you have given an informed consent to chiropractic care, the doctor will initiate treatment. Chiropractic treatment encompasses a wide variety of specialized procedures, many of which involve hands-on techniques called chiropractic adjustments. These are designed specifically to improve spinal position and joint function. When delivered by chiropractors, chiropractic adjustments have been found to be extremely safe, gentle and virtually painless. Your chiropractor may supplement the adjustment with the use of other techniques, therapies or exercises, depending upon your particular case. Before leaving the office, you will often be given suggestions for home care so that you can play an active role in helping to restore your health. For a consultation or more information, contact Dr. Rick Behar and Dr. Marc Browner at Windmill Health Center in Weston at 954-217-4881. They have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Contact the Weston location for more information.

Heel and Arch Pain in Adults BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

P

lantar Fasciitis, or “Heel Spur Syndrome”, is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. Causes can include excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear, as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time, is often a contributing factor. Symptoms include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel happens with or without weightbearing. Extreme tenderness to touch the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly associated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs. Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided, may be taken. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury can also help. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night splints are utilized to splint the foot at night to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on level of pain and discomfort may be recommended. Physical therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, Shockwave therapy (EPAT) or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used. Endoscopic surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel. Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of the cases if early and aggressive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected, and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. orning sickness. weight gain. skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, causing

stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result - smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help. A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of child bearing and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include: ▸▸ Breast augmentation ▸▸ Tummy tuck ▸▸ Butt lift ▸▸ Breast lift (abdominoplasty) ▸▸ Liposuction For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover: ▸▸ Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. ▸▸ Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. ▸▸ Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and Dr. Messa has achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. The Sun, UV Radiation and Your Eyes BY DR. JANE THERRIEN

U

ltraviolet safety is vital to maintaining the health of our eyes, and residents of sunny South Florida should take special precaution. Eye doctors caution us that too much exposure to UV light raises the risks of eye diseases, including cataracts, growths on the eye, and cancer. In the winter months of certain areas, strong exposure to snow reflection can also quickly cause painful damage called snow blindness. Growths on the eye, such as pterygium, can show up in our teens or twenties, especially in surfers, skiers, fishermen, farmers, or anyone who spends long hours under the mid-day sun or in the UV-intense conditions found near rivers, oceans, and mountains. Diseases like cataract and eye cancers can take many years to develop, but each time we’re out in the sun without protection we could be adding damage that adds to our risks for these serious disorders. Babies and kids need to wear hats and sunglasses for this very reason. People of all ages should take precautions whenever they are outdoors. Follow these tips to protect your eyes from the sun all year long: ▸▸ Sun damage to eyes can occur anytime during the year, not just in the summertime, so be sure to wear UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hats whenever you’re outside. ▸▸ Don’t be fooled by clouds: the sun’s rays can pass through haze and thin clouds. ▸▸ Never look directly at the sun. Looking directly at the sun at any time, including during an eclipse, can lead to solar retinopathy, which is damage to the eye’s retina from solar radiation. ▸▸ Don’t forget the kids and older family members: everyone is at risk, including children and senior citizens. Protect their eyes with hats and sunglasses.

UV Light: Good in Moderation for a Good Night’s Sleep As we sleep, our eyes enjoy continuous lubrication. During sleep the eyes also clear out irritants such as dust, allergens or smoke that may have accumulated during the day. Some research suggests that light-sensitive cells in the eye are important to our ability to regulate wake-sleep cycles. This may be more critical as we age, when more people have problems with insomnia. While it’s important that we protect our eyes from overexposure to UV light, our eyes also need minimal exposure to natural light every day to help maintain normal sleepwake cycles.

lthough there are several classifications of alimony in this state, such as “Bridge the Gap,” Rehabilitative and Durational, the one classification which creates the most controversy is Permanent Alimony. This classification of alimony can be required in a long-term marriage, which is defined as a marriage of 17 years or more. Permanent Alimony will terminate upon the death of either party, or the remarriage of the receiving spouse. In addition, it can be modified (increased or reduced) if there a substantial change of circumstance occurs. A substantial change of circumstance usually refers to a change in the finances of either party. If either spouse loses his or her job and a new job results in a lower income, that would be considered a substantial change of circumstance. The change, however, cannot be voluntary in nature. A person cannot quit his/her job and then ask the court for some relief due to this intentional act. Permanent Alimony can also be terminated or modified if a “supportive relationship” exists. The question is, “What exactly is a supportive relationship?” Florida Statutes do, in fact, define such a relationship, but it is certainly open to interpretation. It exists when a couple, who is not legally married, does in essence hold themselves out as a married couple. Many individuals who receive Permanent Alimony will avoid re-marriage, since it will end alimony by operation of law. The Supportive Relationship Statute was enacted to deal with couples, who are in essence married, but not by operation of law.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

The Courts are to consider the following in determining whether a supportive relationship exists: ▸▸ The extent which the couple has held themselves out as a married couple or otherwise conducted themselves in a manner that evidences a permanent supportive relationship ▸▸ The amount of time the parties have lived together ▸▸ Have the parties pooled their income or assets or otherwise exhibited financial interdependence? ▸▸ The extent that either party has supported the other ▸▸ The extent of which either party has performed valuable services for the other party ▸▸ Whether the parties have jointly contributed to the purchase of real property ▸▸ Whether the parties have an express or implied agreement concerning support or property sharing The above criteria clearly show that there is much room for interpretation by a judge. It is believed that the Florida legislature will, in fact, someday address this statute in an attempt to clarify the intent. The law firm of Evan H. Beware of the Sippy Cup BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

M

any parents have been educated early in regards to the potential hazards in the misuse of baby bottles. As bottles are used for infants/ babies, they usually contain milk or formula. Parents are now being educated against putting their child down with a bottle for fear of contributing to early childhood caries (ECC). In fact, the occurrence of multiple cavities at this young age, ECC, was for a long time referred to as “baby bottle cavities.” Parents have also been instructed to wean their child off of the bottle as their child approached the toddler years. In comes the “sippy cup.” It is not a bottle. It is spill proof. It is perfect for travel, prevents spills, and kids seem to keep quieter longer when they have them. It is perfect for use…and misuse.

How To Handle Those Difficult Golf Shots

B

BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL

ost amateurs are intimidated by these difficult situations described below. When this happens, they tense up and forget about the key tips to escaping the situation they are in.

Your ball is on the upslope just under the lip of the bunker. Play the ball in the center of your stance and dig your right foot into the sand as a good solid base. Address the ball with the club face square toward the pin and tilt your body so that your shoulders are Dean Sklar, PGA angled the same as the slope you are standing in. Next, pick a spot two inches behind the ball and try to impact the sand on your downswing into that spot, swinging your arms and club up the slope and on the same angle of your shoulders. It’s easy to do; if you keep your weight back you should feel most of your weight on the ball of your right foot as you blast through the sand.

Your ball has ended up coming to rest in a fairway divot.

The problem is that functionally, the use of the sippy cup creates the same exposure to sugary beverages as the bottle. The use of both bottles and sippy cups necessitate an extension forward of the tongue with a simultaneous retraction of the cheeks. This action causes an exposure of the front teeth to liquid, while at the same time removes the natural cleansing effect of the saliva and tongue. When the liquid is milk or juice, the result is an increased likelihood of developing cavities. The importance of this is highlighted by the 10% rise in occurrence of cavities in two- to five year olds in this decade vs. last. The following are sippy cup tips recommended by the America Association of Pediatric Dentistry: ▸▸ Use sippy cups as they were intended, as a transitional tool from bottle to cup. Therefore, they should not be used for extended periods of time. ▸▸ Sippy cups should be filled with juice or milk for meals only. ▸▸ A child should not be using a sippy cup for bedtime or naps, unless filled with water. ▸▸ Diluting juice does not significantly reduce the cavity causing ability of the juice. Whether it is potty training, removal of a pacifier, or discontinuing the use of a bottle, transitioning our children can be an extremely challenging part of parenting. It is our opinion that patience and consistency are the keys to success. In terms of the transition from the bottle, we highly recommend creating a routine that promotes the drinking of water. Juices and milk should be saved for meal times only. Getting your child used to this early will surely help reduce the need for avoidable dental treatment. The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

This happened to me during a tournament in my Open Qualifying round in New Jersey. It’s difficult because the ball now sits below the bottom of your natural swing arc setting you up to “skull” the ball or hit it “thin.” You need to make a steeper angle of attack and get the club face fully on the ball. Play the ball off your inside right heel and set your hands even with your belt buckle. Notice how this angles the shaft towards the intended target. Try to pick the club up on the backswing a little quicker thus creating a steep angle attack back towards the down swing keeping your weight on your left side and imagine you are trying to pick the ball clean as if you are hitting out of a fairway bunker. This will allow you to get more of the club face down into the ball than on top of it.

The 50-yard bunker shot. Your ball ends up about 50 yards from the green in the middle of a fairway bunker where you used to blast out of the green side bunker. Treat the shot the same way as you would in a green side bunker, but instead of using a 60 degree sand wedge take out your 8 or 9 iron which has a longer shaft and less degrees to carry further to your pin on the green.

Tree overhanging and need to hook the ball low under and around the branches. When faced with this shot shaping task you need to select a 3 or 4 iron and play the ball towards the back of your stance. Aim your body towards the right of the tree and drop your right foot back. This will allow you to now produce a right to left low hooking shot, but it is very important to not follow through like in your normal full swing. Imagine there is a rope past impact and you need to keep your follow through swing under that rope. This will keep the ball trajectory low and spinning the ball right to left. Try and imagine these types of shots sometimes in your practice routine and imagine how you need to produce them. Once you get back to the course you will feel so much more confident instead of panicking. PET CARE

Canine Urine Marking BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM

C

anine urine marking is a natural, instinctive behavior in dogs, but it is not appropriate inside the house. Dogs, especially sexually intact male dogs, urinate on objects to mark their territory or to leave a message for other dogs. Urine marking behavior usually begins when the dog reaches sexual maturity.

What Causes Canine Urine Marking? An intact male dog is most likely to mark when there is a female dog in heat nearby. Intact female dogs are also prone to marking when they are in heat. However, any dog may mark if another dog has urinated anywhere in the house. By urinating on the previous site of urination, the dog essentially “remarks” that location as its own territory. Unless the scent of the urine is completely removed, the dog is likely to keep urinating there. In multi-dog households, dogs, especially of the same sex, may compete for dominance, which can result in urine marking. This same behavior can occur in a confident dog that feels dominant to the owner. Any anxiety-producing situation can trigger urine marking as well. Workmen in the house, the arrival of a new baby, or visiting relatives can all produce anxiety in a dog. Rest assured, your dog is not trying to get back at you. It’s just doing what comes naturally.

How Is Canine Urine Marking Diagnosed? Your veterinarian will start by discussing when, where, and how often the behavior occurs. A workup should be conducted to rule out medical disorders that may be causing the problem. If there are no medical causes, your veterinarian will need to determine if incomplete housetraining or other behavioral conditions are causing the problem.

How Can It Be Treated? In most cases, overcoming urine marking requires multiple steps: ▸▸ Neutering. If the dog is sexually intact, neutering is the first step. In many cases, male dogs that are neutered stop urine marking within weeks to months of the procedure. Female dogs that are spayed almost always stop the behavior. However, behavior modification is often needed as well. ▸▸ Positive reinforcement. Never punish a dog for urine marking. Punishment can create more anxiety, which may only exacerbate the problem. Instead, you need to supervise your pet closely. If you see the dog starting to eliminate inside, interrupt him or her with a firm “No,” and bring the pet outside. When the dog urinates outside, reward him or her with praise and treats. Make sure to bring your dog outside frequently, always providing rewards for appropriate urination outdoors. ▸▸ Confinement. During retraining, it helps to limit your dog’s access to frequently marked areas. You may need to confine your dog to a room or small area by shutting doors or by using baby gates or a crate. As your dog’s behavior improves, you can gradually increase his or her freedom in the house. ▸▸ Establish dominance. Some dogs need to be gently reminded that you are the boss and that they need to work for rewards. Ask your dog to sit or lay down, then provide a reward such as a treat or a walk and TLC! ▸▸ Medications. As a last resort, you can consult your veterinarian for medications. In most cases, dogs are given a type of antidepressant. However, behavior modification is always the first choice and should continue, even with medications. AG Skincare Introduces New Facial Renewal Treatment BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he goal at AG Skincare is to make clients feel and look their best, and for many people that means feeling confident in their appearance. AG Skincare is pleased to offer a new facial renewal treatment that provides dramatic results in just one visit. Head Aesthetician Adriana Gomez explains this revolutionary treatment and shares more about the other services available at AG Skincare. Please tell us about this new treatment you are offering clients? Triniti Plus is an anti-aging treatment that delivers powerful results in just one session. With the triniti Plus program, color correction, contouring, fine lines, wrinkles and texture can all be treated in a single session using elos technology, designed with light and RF energies to be safe for most skin types. How does triniti Plus work? It combines three treatments in one session to achieve total facial and neck renewal. In the first step, energy is applied to the skin to correct discoloration. In step two, energy is applied to contour the skin. Finally, in step three, energy is applied in a matrix to treat wrinkles and texture. It’s relatively painless; topical anesthetic cream and external

POSITIVE PARENTING

Back to Basics BY IVIS MATEOS

W

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Insomnia May be an Indication of Other Health Concerns

ith all that’s going on with violence in schools, and the amount of negative information children are exposed to through media, smart-phones, and life in general, how do you teach non-violence? What tools do you use to encourage the youth/children around you? How do you instill a sense of security, values, faith, and discipline? As a community we must regroup and learn to rely on each other for support. We need to go back to the basic principle of trusting one another. “It takes a village to raise a child”, literally! We need to form an alliance of individuals, parents, teachers, grandparents, neighbors, service men and women, that are willing to set differences aside in order raise our children with purpose. When I say children, I am referring to all of the children in our community – even the ones that don’t share our same DNA. Dr. Aura, a mother of two teenagers, believes that “it is our second job as a community member to step up and help, assist and lend a helping hand to all those that need it.” We must set the example of service. How about we give our children choices like what community or volunteer work they want to participate in? Perhaps take them to an animal shelter to volunteer their time cleaning and caring for abandoned animals. This is something my friend Yadira advocates and strongly believes children would benefit from since it helps with the development of responsibility and social skills. Ms. Anais, an elementary teacher for over ten years, mentioned how she has seen a great shift in the way children are coping with challenges. Children are finding it difficult to accept defeat, to accept the fact that we don’t always win at games, or in life, yet they are still expecting to be rewarded just for participating. It is important we prepare our children for the future and the true challenges life will bring. While we need to encourage our children often, it is also necessary to remind them that challenges are not a bad thing. They help us grow and push us to do better. Encourage children to be children. That means children should be allowed to play outdoors as much as they play indoors. Let them get dirty. Allow them to experiment and explore. Uninterrupted playtime is the primary way young children learn about their world and build physical, cognitive, and emotional awareness. Empathy helps activate pro-social behavior. It is the key to kindness, forgiveness, understanding and ultimately love. How do we teach empathy? By being empathetic. As adults, we are responsible for setting the standards. We must be conscious of our actions and reactions. When there is a neighbor in need, are we walking the other way and pretending we didn’t see that neighbor’s need, or do we take the initiative and help out? It is important that we start asking ourselves these questions and be honest with what we are reflecting to our children. Like my dear cousin Kristy said, “crap happens and sometimes life sucks. And sometimes we get angry,” but we still have the responsibility to be good role models. The only way to truly make a change in our children’s lives, is to come together, have faith and never lose hope. The battle is great and therefore it takes a village of individuals to ensure our children feel protected, loved, and appreciated.

bout 30-40% of Americans have reported suffering from insomnia (one of the most common sleep disorders), according to the US Department of Health and Services. Having a bad night’s sleep is common for most people, but if you suffer from repeated episodes of not being able to fall asleep or have difficulty staying asleep, it is time to get help. The human body needs sleep as much as it needs to breathe to function properly, because recovery is crucial. This is the time when your body uses cells to repair damage and creates antibodies to fight infections and keep you healthy. In addition, sleep time provides for new learning and memory pathways to be formed in the brain. While you are sleeping, heart rate and blood pressure slow down to give your heart a much needed break; one single night of sleep deprivation can cause your blood pressure to skyrocket the next day. Consider what happens to your body when you are sleep deprived. You are irritable and feel tired; you have trouble making decisions and solving problems; you can’t focus; you are more easily confused and more likely to get sick. Essentially, your body is under stress. While some individuals choose to put sleep in the back burner in order to keep up with the demands of a hectic, technology-driven world, others are trying to get their nightly rest and are unable to. Consider this - you’ve had a long day at work; put the kids to sleep; and it is finally time to unwind. You’ve been thinking of this moment all day long and now you are finally in bed. It’s 1am or 2am and you are still tossing and turning in spite of feeling exhausted. Suddenly, you wake up and then eventually you fall asleep. Now it’s time for work and you are feeling as fatigued, if not more, than the day before. This cycle continues day in and day out for many individuals who think this is just the way life is. Some resort to teas and pills in hopes of finding comfort, but know that there is a better answer to meeting your sleep needs. Unless you work with a qualified professional, you won’t know why this is happening to you. You may be suffering from undiagnosed thyroid issues or simply have a vitamin/mineral deficiency. There are many reasons why humans can have difficulty sleeping. The simple fact of not being able to fall asleep creates stress and anxiety that can prevent you from falling asleep the next day, and the next week, and the next month. Insomnia is just one more way your body is crying for attention and it is an indication that something is out of balance - don’t ignore it. The most important goal in functional medicine is the optimization of health and balance. At Bellissimo Medical we can conduct specialized testing to find the cause of insomnia, as well as guide you into making lifestyle changes that will restore your good health and well-being. Balancing hormones may be all that’s needed, or we may need to look in other directions, such as addressing the thyroid, adrenals, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, neurotransmitters of the brain and much more. Let our years of experience guide you in becoming balanced and sleeping well again.
