Hurricane Season – A Time to be Prepared, Not Scared
I
f you’ve lived in South Florida for long enough, you’ve experienced your share of hurricane warnings, scares, and, unfortunately, storms. Last year, many of us boarded up our homes and prepared for the worst. We were lucky that Hurricane Matthew stayed just off the coast and spared us, but this year could be very different. Hurricane season officially lasts from June 1st until November 30th. According to the most recent forecasts, the 2017 Hurricane season should be about average, with a total of 11 named storms. Hurricane “season”, however, is not what causes billions of dollars of damage and threatens lives; it is that one big storm. There is little to no correlation between the number of severe storms in the Atlantic and the number of storms that reach landfall. We owe it to ourselves and to our families to make sure we are prepared. The Florida Department of Emergency Management recommends that every family prepare a hurricane kit and have an evacuation plan in place. You can visit www.floridadisaster.org/getaplan to create a personalized plan. It only takes a few minutes and could be the difference between life and death. Stay safe and have a wonderful summer. Sincerely,

Celebrate the Great American Spirit at Weston’s July 4th Hometown Parade COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
W
hether you are new to this country or your family has been here for generations, we can all appreciate what it means to be an American. Celebrating the Great American Spirit is the theme of this year’s City of Weston 4th of July Hometown Parade. Director of Communications Denise Barrett-Miller says each year when selecting a theme, the City searches for a patriotic statement that can be interpreted by each person a little differently dependent upon their life experiences. “Celebrating the Great American Spirit can mean the strength and spirit of the American people, individually or collectively; the spirit of the country as a whole; the idea of America and all it has to offer.” City leaders are excited to see the various ways this theme will be portrayed by our culturally-diverse community and the unity it brings. “Attending a community 4th of July celebration helps to remind us that the American Spirit is alive and well, and living in all of us,” notes Director of Parks & Recreation Don Decker, whose department is coordinating the City’s 4th of July festivities. This year’s parade will feature not one but several Grand Marshals. Decker says the principals from Weston’s local schools have been invited to participate. Mayor Daniel Stermer encourages everyone in the community to attend this time-honored tradition. “The Weston July 4th Hometown Parade is a long-standing, family-friendly, small town tradition filled with individuals and groups from your own community, exhibiting their pride and celebration of our nation’s independence. This fun-filled event also includes professional entertainment and music to complete one of the year’s most colorful and spirit-filled events.” Weston’s annual 4th of July Hometown Parade begins at 10:30am at Weston Town Center. Decker says the event usually attracts about 3,000 spectators. He recom-
mends people arrive early to secure a spot along the parade route and to bring their own chairs. The parade is free and open to everyone. Any interested community groups, organizations, businesses, schools and bands can participate. Many popular annual entries include the police and fire department, scout troops, and local churches. To download a parade application, go to www.westonfl.org/media/docs/ misc/2017_July_4_Parade_Application.pdf. The deadline to register is June 23rd. Prior to the parade will be Weston’s 4th of July Hometown Celebration 5K Run/ Walk at Weston Regional Park. The race begins at 7am. The course goes out and back on South Post Road with a lap around the park to the finish line in front of the Community Center. en local students will be able to pursue their music studies in college next year thanks to the Weston Philharmonic Society and a group of generous benefactors in the community. Over the past 20 years, the Weston Philharmonic Society (WPS) has presented dozens of scholarships to deserving students from Cypress Bay and Western high schools. This year it was able to increase the number of annual scholarships from four to ten because of an innovative program of matching named scholarships. Weston Philharmonic Society Co-President Lou Marett says it was a privilege to be able to recognize so many talented young musicians. “It is our honor to be able to support these talented young musicians as they pursue their passion and interest Photo courtesy City of Weston. in music studies.” Seven students from Cypress Bay High School and three from Western High School were formally recognized when the scholarships were presented during a Weston City Commission meeting. Weston Philharmonic Society Past-President Advisor Roger Lander introduced each recipient, while Co-Presidents Andrea Burghardt and Louis Marett presented the scholarships. Soprano vocalist and pianist Kaitlyn Wallace will attend Florida Gulf Coast University with support from Denis and Linda Trupkin. Presenting these music scholarships is just one of many ways the Weston Philharmonic Society supports music education in Weston schools. “Each year, we reach more than 10,000 children with our In-School Music program which brings professional symphony musicians into Weston elementary schools,” notes WPS Co-President Andrea Burghardt. Since 2002, the Weston Philharmonic Society has presented world-class symphony concerts for residents in cooperation with the City of Weston. Weston University Students’ Final Assignment: Mock City Commission Meeting COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
W
eston University program students put their knowledge to the test when they participated in a simulated City Commission meeting. It was the culminating activity for the six-month program which provides high school students with a handson education in local government. “The students learn about and experience the various city departments and services throughout the program as well as the role of the City Commission which enacts the laws of the City, adopts the budget under which each department functions, and establishes the policies by which Weston is governed,” explains Denise BarrettMiller, Weston’s Director of Communications and Weston University Coordinator. “The Commission Simulation exercise brings all of that together, where students present and/or defend their side of several real agenda issues, gaining a truer understanding of each role of government.” The Weston City Commissioners along with dedicated city staff guided the students through a simulated agenda which included items taken from actual City Commission meetings. Photos courtesy City of Weston.
Each student was assigned a role to play, ranging from Mayor to Police Chief to resident. Student “Mayor” Valeria Ruiz called the meeting to order and moved through the mock agenda in the Commission Chambers inside City Hall. Barrett-Miller says the City Commissioners and staff members were thoroughly impressed by their student counterparts’ knowledge, interest and desire to role play. “By participating in Weston University, everyone involved gains such satisfaction and reward through departing our knowledge and passion for government, and exposing students to various career opportunities they might have otherwise overlooked in public service.” For their graduation, the Weston U Class of 2017 was formally recognized during an actual City Commission meeting last month. Weston University is a one-of-a-kind program providing a unique civic education to high school students. It is open to Weston students attending Cypress Bay High School, The Sagemont School, Western High School, as well as home schooled students. Applications for the Weston U Class of 2018 will be available at the start of the school year. In less than eight hours the group toured The Capitol Building, where they met Congresswomen Debbie Wasserman Schultz on the front steps, posed for pictures in front of the White House, and visited almost all of the memorials at the National Mall. Prior to the trip, students were provided with key facts about each location and its significance in history. While wandering around DC’s famed tidal basin, the group admired the beautiful cherry blossoms in bloom. These trees were a gift to the United States from Japan in the early 20th century. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Hopping Good Time at Royal Egg Hunt COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
T
housands of children scrambled to collect some of the 30,000 candy-filled eggs at this year’s Royal Egg Hunt. This event has become a time-honored tradition in our community and a favorite for families of all faiths. The free event, which was open to all children ages ten and under, took place at Weston Regional Park, where the ball fields were polka-dotted with brightly colored eggs. It was precious to watch as children ran around scooping up the eggs into their baskets. All eyes were on the look-out for one of the special “golden” eggs, which could be redeemed for small prizes. Following the egg hunt, families were able to capture priceless photos of their children posing with the Royal Bunny. Kids put their excess energy from indulging in the sugary treats to good use jumping in the bounce houses. The annual Royal Egg Hunt is presented by the City of Weston and coordinated by the Parks and Recreation Department.

New Bike Lane Signs Attract Attention SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
C
yclists from other communities may be green with envy when they see the new green bike lane emblems along Bonaventure Boulevard, between Royal Palm and South Post Road. Not only are these new green signs more visible to both bikers and motorists, they are also safer. The colorful bike lane designations are a Federal Highway Administration traffic control device. They are a cost-effective means of alerting or warning motorists to the presence of bike lanes, and cyclists on the roadway, therefore enhancing safety. While the bright green color may not physically protect a cyclist, it does create a greater visible warning to drivers of the presence of a bike lane. The new bike lane emblems were installed by the Broward County Public Works Department, Traffic Engineering Division. The emblems are pre-formed thermoplastic with a high friction surface. They are heat applied to the asphalt surface and bind with the pavement. The County will monitor the bike lane emblems in Weston to evaluate their durability in South Florida’s heat, humidity and UV index. The plan is to install these green emblems on all new bike lanes on county and city streets. Photos courtesy City of Weston. In addition, older, faded bike
lane markings will eventually be replaced with the green emblems. This is the latest bicycle safety device being installed in Weston by the Broward Traffic Engineering Department. An enhanced bike detection system was installed at two intersections along Saddle Club Road, at Royal Palm Boulevard/ Glades Parkway (all directions) and at Indian Trace (north and south direction only). Weston is part of a pilot program testing the effectiveness of the bicycle detection system, specifically regarding its ability to detect cyclists in designated bike lanes and mixed-use traffic lanes. The bike detection system features a special traffic signal of an illuminated stick-figure version of a bicycle to indicate when it is safe for bicycles to enter the intersection. After the initial test period, the County may introduce special phasing for the bike lanes where bicyclists may get an advance green light before motor traffic. It’s not surprising that Weston was selected as one of the first communities in Broward County to receive the bicycle detection system and the new green bike lane emblems. With nearly 50 miles of paved bike lanes, thousands of bicyclists ride through Weston on any given day. Weston is designated a bicycle friendly city by The League of American Bicyclists.
Sunshine at the Park Shines Light on Suicide Awareness and Prevention BY STACEY BOMSER
D
espite the rain showers, the second annual “Sunshine at the Park” event was a huge success. The Dylan Schopp Sunshine Foundation raised over $40,000 for suicide awareness and prevention causes. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, on average, one person dies by suicide every three hours in the State of Florida. Suicide is currently the tenth leading cause of death in Florida, and the third leading cause of death for ages 10-24. Sadly, that statistic includes several young Weston residents. One of whom was Dylan Schopp. The Schopp family created the Dylan Schopp Sunshine Foundation in his memory, to celebrate Dylan’s life and help his spirit and energy live on in hopes of preventing similar tragedies. The non-profit organization strives to spread positivity and hope through community outreach and public awareness of suicide prevention. Sunshine at the Park is one of its biggest fundraisers. It is held at Markham Park, which is an important location for the Schopp family because it was one of Dylan’s favorite spots. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, jet skiing and mountain biking with his dad. Following Dylan’s passing, the family dedicated a bench in his honor at the park’s Butterfly Garden. “We are thankful for the growing support we’ve received since we started the Foundation,” said Foundation Director Debbie Schopp. “Everyone who came out and supported our second annual Sunshine at the Park event helped raised awareness and support for suicide prevention

and helped Dylan’s light continue to shine.” More than 200 attendees took part in this year’s event, where they were encouraged to sign a pledge wall sharing comments on how they plan to #SpreadTheSunshine. Attendees also had the opportunity to purchase a butterfly for the butterfly release. The second annual Sunshine at the Park festival also featured face painting, sand art, bounce houses, and rock climbing wall for kids, yoga and Zumba classes, as well as a karate demonstration. There was also a performance by Hip Hop Kidz. Proceeds from the event will benefit suicide prevention organizations including HOPE Sunshine Clubs operated in partnership with the Weston-based Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention. The purpose of the HOPE Sunshine Clubs is to educate, support, and develop problem solving, coping skills and leadership skills, while fostering the prevention of suicide, bullying and substance abuse and many other important issues teens encounter. There are currently HOPE Sunshine Clubs in more than 20 Broward County schools including Cypress Bay High School, Falcon Cove Middle School and Tequesta Trace Middle School. Home Purchase and Repair Help Available to Low Income Families COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he City of Weston wants to help make the dream of home ownership available to more families, while helping others improve the structure and safety of their home. Through the Community Development Block Grant Program, the City, in partnership with the Broward County Housing Finance and Community Redevelopment Division, is providing limited assistance programs to qualified persons. The Down Payment Assistance program is available to qualified persons wishing to purchase a single-family home, town house or condominium within the City of Weston. It offers a maximum of $40,000, based upon financial need. Households must have incomes less than 80% of the Area Median Income, adjusted by family size, based upon the March 2016 U.S. Housing and Urban Development income chart. For Broward County, the income limit for a family of four is $58,000; for a single homeowner, the limit is $40,600. The total debt cannot exceed 45% of gross income. Home sale prices cannot exceed $329,269. To qualify, a buyer must first be able to obtain a first mortgage through a bank and must contribute 3% of the total costs, including closing costs, insurance, inspection fees, property taxes and other required fees from their own funds. Under the grant program, there will be no interest, and as long as the borrower owns, occupies and maintains the home for a period of 15 years, the loan will be forgiven. All funds will be expended on a first come, first qualified basis. Current Weston homeowners may be eligible for
financial assistance to help make repairs to their single-family home, townhouse or condominium. These repairs are limited to complete repair/ replacement of a deteriorating roof system, window replacement, door replacement, insulation, and hurricane/storm shutters. The maximum amount of assistance is $40,000 and will be determined by the actual cost of the work. Like the down payment assistance, with the home repair assistance eligible households must have incomes less than 80% of the Area Median Income, adjusted by family size. In addition, mortgage, taxes and insurance must be paid current. Home repair funds will be secured with a junior note and mortgage on the property. There will be no interest charged; as long as the borrower continues to own, occupy and maintain the home for a period of ten years, the loan will be forgiven. Like the down payment assistance program, all funds will be expended on a first come, first qualified basis. Homeowners interested in applying for this loan should fill out the City of Weston Home Repair Intake form available for download at http://www. broward.org/Housing/Documents/HomeRepair/ WestonRepairIntakeForm.pdf. Weston BSO Takes Home Top Honors from BSO Recognition Ceremony COMMUNITY NEWS

eston is continually recognized as one of the safest cities in the state. Earlier this year, the National Council for Home Safety and Security ranked Weston as #2 in its Safest Cities in Florida report. In February 2016, NeighborhoodScout ranked Weston as #11 on its list of the Top 100 Safest Cities in the United States. These accolades can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District deputies and civilian personnel, many of whom were honored at the annual Broward Sheriff’s Office Awards Ceremony. Deputy Christopher Bradley was honored as 2016 Deputy of the Year. During his 14 years with BSO, Deputy Bradley has consistently performed at an exceptionally high level. He was selected for the Crime Suppression Team (CST) in 2015 and was the overall top performer with the District and CST in 2016. Deputy Bradley contributed to the confiscation of more than 40 pounds of marijuana, almost nine pounds of cocaine, six grams of crack cocaine, and seizure of several other street drugs, in addition to confiscating counterfeit credit cards and stolen items. The Weston/West Broward Criminal Investigations Unit received the DLE Grand Cordon Unit Achievement Award. Detectives in the Criminal Investigations Unit made 65 arrests in 2016 for felony and misdemeanor crimes including burglary, grand theft, auto theft and dealing in stolen property. The unit worked closely with neighboring jurisdictions on the investigations. Their relentless work and efforts resulted in solving an unprecedented number of high profile cases. Detective Steve Barreto received the Life Saving Award. The 19-year member of BSO, who has been stationed in Weston since 2003, is credited with performing CPR to save

the life of a local woman. Last July, Detective Barreto was responding to a call at Cleveland Clinic Florida when he discovered an unconscious female in the parking lot. As he checked her condition she stopped breathing, so he notified Dispatch that he needed assistance and immediately began CPR on the woman. Detective Barreto directed the first responding deputy to summon medical help from the Emergency Room. Doctors and nurses responded and continued with advance life support aid. The medical staff was able to resuscitate and stabilize the victim, who was admitted to the hospital for recovery. The City of Weston congratulates and thanks the many members of the BSO Weston District, under the leadership of Chief Kevin Butler, for their service to our community. It is because of their diligence and dedication that Weston BSO is recognized among the best of the best.

efore you rent, if possible, arrange for a walk-through of the premises to identify any problems that should be fixed BEFORE signing a rental agreement. Take pictures or video, or make notes of any questionable conditions and include provisions for repairs in the rental agreement or in a separate written document signed by both parties. A tenant is an equal party with the landlord. You never have to agree to any rental arrangement. Before you sign, make sure you thoroughly understand the terms of the agreement. If you DON’T understand, DON’T sign the agreement. There is no grace period allowed for canceling a rental agreement, so if you sign, you are bound to its terms. A landlord has the discretion to collect various deposits, as well as some rent in advance. You should be careful about paying in advance unless you have decided to move into the unit. A tenant who pays in advance but then decides not to occupy the unit MAY NOT be entitled to a refund. It should be stated in the rental agreement if money paid in advance is nonrefundable.

A rental agreement is an agreement to rent property (commonly referred to as a lease). Rental agreements may be either written or oral. Most rental agreements are written because oral agreements can be subject to misunderstandings and are difficult to prove if there’s a dispute. Florida law requires that notices to and from a landlord must be in writing and must be either hand-delivered or mailed, even if the rental agreement is oral. You should always retain a copy of any correspondence to and from your landlord. A damage deposit is the most common requirement of landlords. Before signing a rental agreement, examine the premises and make note of any damaged items (e.g., broken fixtures) and, if possible, take a picture and include a date stamp. Give a copy to the landlord and keep a copy for your files. This may help eliminate or minimize disputes later. On vacating the premises for termination of the lease: ▸▸ If the landlord does not intend to impose a claim on the security deposit, they must return your deposit within 15 days or, ▸▸ Within 30 days, the landlord must give you written notice of how much of the deposit will be kept and why. This must be done by certified mail, to the tenant’s last known mailing address. If this notice is not sent as required within the 30-day period, the landlord forfeits their right to impose a claim on the deposit. After receiving the landlord’s notice of intention to impose a claim, you will have 15 days to object in writing. If no written objection is received, the landlord may then deduct the amount of their claim and shall remit the balance of the deposit to you within 30 days after the date of the notice of intention to impose a claim for damages. If you disagree, you may file a complaint. State Representative Richard Stark (D-Weston) represents House District 104 which includes all of Weston. You can reach Rep. Stark at Richard.Stark@myfloridahouse.gov or by calling his legislative office at 954-217-0287.

ccording to the latest Realtor.org magazine, a homeowner is finally able to pocket more money from their home sale. “The first quarter of 2017 was the most profitable time to be a home seller in nearly a decade, and yet homeowners are continuing to stay put in their homes longer before selling,” says Daren Blomquist, senior VP with ATTOM Data Solutions. “Homeowners who sold in the first quarter had owned their home for an average of 7.97 years, the report showed. Between the first quarter of 2000 and third quarter of 2007, before the Great Recession, average homeownership tenure was 4.26 years. Still, “there are some early signs this inventory logjam may be loosening up in some markets, with the average homeownership tenure down from a year ago in nine of the 66 markets we analyzed, including Memphis, Dallas, Boston, Portland [Ore.], and Tampa,” Blomquist says. “Sky-high potential price gains may be finally prompting more homeowners to sell.” In Weston, there is no “loosing” but extreme “tightening.” What is happening in Weston: There are currently 372 single-family homes listed for sale. Compared to last year: ▸▸ Number of homes for sale is down by 3.8%. ▸▸ Number of homes sold is 54, up by 56.1%. ▸▸ Average sold price per square foot has stayed the same at $204. ▸▸ Average listed price is up 6.3%. The average list price in Weston is $1,020,000. ▸▸ Average sold price is up 3.8%. However, the average sold price is $540,000. ▸▸ ‘Months of inventory’ is down by 38.6%. From the time a home is placed on the market until a contract is accepted is around 70 days. Our inventory has been so low for so long that the 38.6% decrease reflects 4.6 months of inventory. This is EXTREMELY low, and Weston remains a Seller’s market. A balanced market is nine to 12 months. Of the 225 closed sales thus far, 53 buyers paid cash! What About the Luxury Market? Of the 372 single family homes, 88 are priced over $1 Million. The lowest priced is in Bonaventure – a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1,816 total square foot, singlefamily home priced at $229,000. There are no detached homes listed for less than $229,000! The highest priced home is an estate located in Windmill Ranches which is listed for $8.5 Million and is over 11,000 square feet in total area. If you are serious about getting the highest price, now is the time to sell. As you can see, with inventories so low, now would be the best time to get the highest price for your home. What About Buyers? Weston’s inventory squeeze has left buyers with fewer options. While that’s bad news for them, the continuously high demand means it’s one of the best times to be a seller—ever. Interest rates remain historically low. If you have contemplated selling, now is the time to get a comprehensive market analysis of your home. This will help you with your move-up, move-down, or move-out options. Phyllis M. Be Prepared for the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season
JUNE 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON
BY DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF BRUCE ANGIER
T
he traditional Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and runs through November 30, with the peak around mid-August to late October. This is when South Florida is the most vulnerable to significant hurricane damage and devastation. This year, weather and tropic cyclone experts are predicting a slightly below average Atlantic hurricane season, citing the potential development of an El Nino weather pattern. El Nino tends to increase upper-level westerly winds across the Caribbean into the tropical Atlantic Ocean, tearing apart hurricanes as they form. Colorado State University is predicting 11 named storms for 2017, with only four storms reaching hurricane strength. Two hurricanes are predicted to be major hurricanes. Despite the below-normal hurricane activity predictions, we can all be reminded that it only takes one hurricane to produce catastrophic impacts to our community. In 1992, for example, Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida during a below-normal hurricane activity season. There were only seven named storms that year. We have also learned since Hurricane Andrew that early preparedness is the key. The amount of planning necessary to prepare your family for an approaching hurricane will be overwhelming, unless you prepare well in advance. Every family in Weston should be prepared to be self-sufficient for the first three to five days after a major storm so recovery efforts can focus on those who cannot help themselves. ▸▸ Plan in advance. Weston is not in an evacuation zone, and it is unlikely that there will be a mandatory evacuation. However, if you think you might want to leave ahead of a storm, make your evacuation plan now. Know where you will be going and the route and mode of transportation you will take. Have a plan for any family pets also. Public shelters are a refuge of last resort. ▸▸ If evacuating out of the area, leave early. Plan to leave at least 48 hours in advance, and no later than the issuance of a hurricane watch. ▸▸ Identify a safe room. If you plan to stay at home, identify the safest room in your home. This is generally an interior room with no windows, such as a bathroom or closet. Make plans to take shelter in this room in the event of a direct hit. ▸▸ Prepare your hurricane kit. Plan on supplies including food and water that will sustain your family for three to five days, as well as a two-week supply of medicine. The Emergency Refill Law now allows you to obtain a 30-day supply of medications when an emergency is declared. A complete hurricane kit checklist is available from the Broward Emergency Management Division at www.broward.org/hurricane/Pages/Default.aspx. ▸▸ Document your assets. Make a visual or written record of your assets for insurance purposes. Photographing the exterior of your home prior to the storm is also a good practice. ▸▸ Protect important family and financial documents, such as insurance policies, inside weatherproof containers or in watertight re-sealable plastic bags. ▸▸ Secure your home. Shutter windows and glass doors. Anchor loose yard objects or bring them inside. ▸▸ Prepare a water supply. As the storm approaches, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with clean water for bathing and flushing toilets. ▸▸ Turn refrigerators and freezers to the highest settings in anticipation of a power outage. ▸▸ Get cash. Banks and ATM’s do not operate without electricity. ▸▸ Fill your car’s gas tank before the storm. Gas pumps do not work without electricity. ▸▸ Charge all wireless phones and extra batteries before an approaching hurricane. It only takes one hurricane or tropical storm to significantly disrupt our way of life. We should all take action now to prepare our families for this hurricane season. Early planning and knowing what to do now can literally save your life and help you and your family bounce back stronger and faster should a hurricane disaster strike our area. For more information, please contact District Chief Bruce Angier at Fire Station 81 at 954-389-2015 or at bruce_angier@sheriff.org.

J
une 1st marked the start of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. Although forecasters predict less activity than normal, it is still important to be prepared. Now is the time to make sure you have taken the necessary steps to keep your family and your home safe. In addition to gathering emergency supplies, one of the easiest things you can do to protect your family is to register for Weston’s CodeRED Emergency Notification System. The City of Weston has successfully utilized CodeRED for more than a decade to send critical information to residents and local businesses. The ultra high-speed telephone communication service is capable of dialing the entire City within minutes in the event of an emergency. It can also be used to pin-point specific areas or neighborhoods for isolated events. “We elected to subscribe to the CodeRED system because our city leaders felt it was critical to be able to reach our citizens and provide information to them in a timely and efficient manner,” explains Denise Barrett-Miller, Director of Communications for the City of Weston. “CodeRED can make up to 60,000 calls per hour.” The way it works is quite simple. CodeRED delivers a recorded message from the City Manager’s office describing the emergency situation and any instructions for immediate or future action. The message will play when answered by a live person or voice mail. Participants may also opt to receive text message and/ or email alerts. In addition to notifying residents and businesses of storm related emergency situations, CodeRED can also be utilized for life safety purposes. For example,
the City can issue a CodeRED alert in event of a drinking water contamination, missing person, chemical spill or gas leak, extended power outages, and other incidents where rapid and accurate notification is essential. The City of Weston utilizes CodeRED for emergency communications only. Rest assured, your contact information is private. It can not be shared, requested or sold. It is also exempt from public records laws. You can stay safe while you travel too by downloading the free CodeRED Mobile Alert App. It taps into the national CodeRED Emergency Notification System and alerts subscribers located within the reach of a given notification generated by public safety officials. The App tracks your exact location, so no matter where you are when an alert is issued, you will receive notifications on your mobile device that affect you. It delivers real-time emergency, community, missing person and severe weather alerts to users within the exact area of impact. This is a valuable service for those traveling through storm sensitive regions. All Weston residents and businesses are encouraged to register for the City’s CodeRED Emergency Notification System. There is no fee to participate. To learn more about the program or to sign up, go to http://www.westonfl.org/Residents/ Hurricane/CodeRed.aspx. You can also visit that page to add or change a phone number, including cell phones, or to opt for the text message and/or email alerts. If you have any difficulty submitting your information, or at any time wish to be removed from the CodeRED database, send your information by email to CityHall@westonfl.org or call the City of Weston Communications Department at 954-385-2000.
Summer Travelers Can Take Advantage of BSO’s Free Home Watch Program BY STACEY BOMSER
S
ummer is one of the busiest travel seasons. Over the coming months, many Weston residents will be packing up and leaving town, whether it be for a quick weekend getaway or an extended trip. Wherever your travels take you, before you go, make sure your home is protected by registering for the Broward Sheriff’s Office Home Watch program. Under this free program, a BSO deputy, community service aid, or C.O.P. (Citizen Observer Patrol) volunteer will drive by your house and perform a daily perimeter check for signs of break-in or suspicious activity. So, you can relax and enjoy your vacation knowing your home is under the careful watch of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. To register for this free service, simply download the Home Watch form from the BSO website (www.sheriff.org/homewatch) or pick one up at the Weston Police Services Building located at 17300 Royal Palm Boulevard. That is where completed forms should be submitted. Homeowners must provide the dates and times the home will be unoccupied, along with a contact phone number of a trusted neighbor or local relative. In addition to registering for the Home Watch program, homeowners can further protect their property while they are away by taking a few precautions. The Broward Sheriff’s Office recommends you:
38
JUNE 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON
▸▸ let a trusted neighbor know when you will be out of town, and leave a spare key and an emergency telephone number where they can reach you; ▸▸ make your home appear occupied by attaching timers to the lights and television sets and set them to turn on and off at different times; ▸▸ open some of the drapes or blinds; during daytime hours this gives the appearance that someone is home, and during the evening, lights inside the house are more visible; ▸▸ have your newspaper and mail held, or picked up by a friend or neighbor; ▸▸ invite a neighbor to park their car in your driveway; ▸▸ lock your garage door and disconnect the automatic opener; ▸▸ don’t forget to set your alarm; ▸▸ never leave a message on your telephone answering machine or post on social media that you are out of town. Wherever your travels may take you this summer, be sure to bring along a copy of Our City Weston. If you submit a picture of you, or your family, holding the magazine at your destination, then you could be the winner of our Photo of the Month contest. Each month one lucky traveler wins a gift certificate to a local restaurant and gets their vacation picture published in the magazine.

Fox Vein & Laser Experts blood to pool in the ankles and pain and heaviness and swelling in the legs that worsens at the end of the day, after travelling or standing. Over time, the ankles start to get more and more veins. The legs get more painful, swollen and bulging veins appear. Discoloration appears in the ankles and skin changes in the ankles and feet develop. As time goes on skin changes may worsen and the person may develop venous eczema, scarring called lipodermatosclerosis and open sores or ulcers. People may have bleeding veins that are hard to stop.

What should people do about vein disease?
Patients with symptoms should come see us and have an ultrasound to diagnose their specific vein problems. In the meantime, the person should elevate their legs, wear compression hose and take anti-inflammatories for discomfort.
Why should people remove tattoos?
Approximately 25-30% of people in the United States have tattoos. At any given time, around a quarter of them are looking into tattoo removal. Men remove them more than women, usually for their profession and to move up the corporate ladder. Many jobs will not employ someone or move them up to management with visible tattoos. Governmental jobs, military, police and others do not want tattoos in visible areas. As well, some people put their significant others name on them. Some people just change stages in their life and the tattoos are no longer a part of who they are. Some people want room for more ink. Whatever the reason, Picoway is the best tattoo removal laser. It removes all colors of ink faster using pico technology. It works better and with less pain and fewer treatment sessions than other lasers.

The judging criteria is based upon each participant’s ability to present poise, confidence, and a pleasant general atmosphere while performing. Contestants are judged based on their personality and how it is conveyed through three categories: Personal Interview, Casual Wear Modeling, and Formal Wear Modeling/ On-Stage Question. Kyleigh says during the interview portion she was asked what she saw herself doing in five years. She shared that she told the judges she sees herself becoming a young professional artist either in theater on Broadway or a pop vocalist touring the United States. “My ultimate goal is just be as successful as I can as soon as I can, to ensure a good future for my family and myself.” While that may be what her future holds, this summer Kyleigh will be fulfilling her responsibilities as Miss Teen Fort Lauderdale. Her duties include acting as an ambassador for the pageant and making public appearances in parades and other events. Kyleigh will also be busy preparing for the national Miss Teen Competition, which takes place in Orlando

s an actress, dancer and cheerleader, Kyleigh Jehlicka has mastered conveying poise and personality to the audience. Those skills served the Cypress Bay High School sophomore well when she entered, and won, the 2017 Miss Teen Fort Lauderdale pageant. Kyleigh says she was surprised to have been crowned Miss Teen Fort Lauderdale because this was her first pageant competition. She says she gave it a try because she wanted to try something out of her comfort zone. “I wanted to try something new and hopefully gain some things along the way.” That’s the reason many young women enter this particular pageant. According to the Miss Teen Competition website, “This teen pageant is about being yourself and gaining an experience that will allow you to achieve things in life that possibly you may have never attempted without this experience. More than $30,000 in scholarship prizes were awarded at last year’s National Pageant Competition. Kyleigh is excited about the prospects and encourages other girls to push themselves to try new things. “You can do anything you put your mind to. I entered this pageant as a newbie, never trying this before, and winning the whole thing. Anything is possible with the right mind set and effort.”

The Best Approach to Plastic Surgery Is Moderation BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.
mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles, the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless mask-like face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane, should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants or oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend to any individual who is considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure to consult with a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) organization, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery, with documented experience prior to proceeding. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. Candida Overgrowth – A Common Condition That Is Easily Overlooked BY JEAN-
N
umerous studies have linked gut health to overall well-being. In the last decade, scientists have paid close attention to the gut/ brain connection, realizing that bacteria regulate important brain functions and that stress, anxiety and depression could all be related to what happens in your gut. But what happens in your gut can affect your daily life in many other ways. Keep in mind that it is important to keep a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut, but there’s the good and the bad. Of course, diet is directly linked to what happens in your gut, but what if you are making healthy nutritional choices, even exercising, and still feel tired or suffer from headaches and mood swings? The problem can still originate in your gut, and you could be suffering from a condition known as Candida overgrowth. Candida albicans is a yeast that lives in the human body and its function is to recognize and destroy harmful bacteria - a healthy body will actually have millions of it. However, if friendly bacteria in your body are decreasing due to the use of antibiotics or poor nutritional choices, for example, this imbalance creates the perfect conditions for yeast proliferation or Candida overgrowth—the underlying cause of chronic, difficult to diagnose health problems. Unfortunately, many of us have a “sick” gut from years of abusing our bodies through poor nutrition and unhealthy habits. In many cases, a healthy nutrition plan alone may not be enough to treat your symptoms if the root of the problem is unknown. In fact, in order to treat Candida effectively, it is vital to find its source of origin. Modern medicine does a good job at recognizing disease and treating acute conditions, but fails at identifying common syndromes such as Candida overgrowth, due to the wide range of symptoms that can be subtle or mimic other conditions. The consequences of a sick gut can be manifested by numerous symptoms including rash, bloating, weight loss, diarrhea/constipation, headaches, anxiety/depression, insomnia and low immunity. Functional medicine doctors are more successful at recognizing and diagnosing conditions as Candida, because we look at the person’s physiology, genetic and environmental factors and not just at an isolated set of symptoms. A number of factors increase the risk of yeast overgrowth. They include: ▸▸ Chronic stress ▸▸ Alcohol ▸▸ Diabetes ▸▸ Diet high in simple sugars ▸▸ Poor sleep habits ▸▸ Lack of physical activity Treating Candida successfully requires a comprehensive, systematic approach including dietary changes and supplements, such as probiotics. Working with a functional medicine doctor will ensure you get the correct diagnosis and individualized treatment. What works for one person may not work for another. If you feel you may be suffering from Candida, at Bellissimo Medical we can offer guidance to bring relief and accelerate your healing. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954384-8989. Spotlight Shines on The Sagemont School’s Theater Program
SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER

T
his has been another stellar year for The Sagemont School’s performing arts department. Performances by both the Upper School and Lower School earned rave reviews, not to mention an impressive 11 Cappie Award nominations. Sagemont’s production of Frankenstein garnered attention for acting, choreography, special effects, lighting, sound, hair and make-up. Sagemont Theater Director Elizabeth Garrard says she chose Frankenstein because the material highlighted her students’ strengths. “I felt that I had strong male lead actors to work with, and I also recognized a talent in my design students which could be best applied to a horror setting in terms of make-up and special effects.” Garrard says the biggest challenges in this production were the physical aspects of the characters and the monster make-up. “The students had to move as monsters and machines. We spent many weeks developing physical choreography and strength building exercises. Frankenstein’s monster had to go through a complete physical transformation from monster to man on stage in front of the audience,” she explains. “The students also developed a ‘dream sequence dance’ between the monster and his bride which explored disjointed movement and elements of Japanese Butoh movement.” The production also tested the skills of the special effects crew. “We experimented with many different latex products in order to develop the prosthetics for Frankenstein’s monster,” notes Garrard. “The make-up team had to develop prosthetics for Paxton Terris, who played Frankenstein, that would remain adhesive in spite of rain and snow effects on the stage.” Many of these same students appeared in the High School Thespian Honor Society’s Broadway Backwards fundraiser. The event brought in nearly $2,000 for the club. Garrard says she is proud of the students in the troupe, who directed and organized the production. “The performers covered songs that were traditionally sung by characters of the opposite gender, adding the ‘backwards’ gimmick to the performance,” she explains. “The students were excited to explore the emotional and vocal range of characters whom they would not normally have the chance to perform.” Broadway Backwards’ songs included “I’ll Cover You” from RENT, “Santa Fe” from Newsies, and “The Negative” from Waitress, as well as songs from other contemporary works such as 35MM, Ordinary Days, Kinky Boots, and more. “The audience had a great time; tapping their feet, laughing, and crying as the students brought vivid musical theater moments to life,” shares Garrard. Many members of Sagemont’s High School Thespian Honor Society got their start in the school’s Middle School productions. This year, the drama department produced Sagemont’s own version of Honk!
JUNE 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON
Garrard says one of the reason’s she chose this play was because it mirrors many of the same social themes explored in the High School’s production of Frankenstein. Honk! explored social issues such as prejudice, acceptance, gender roles in society, bullying and peer pressure. “The lead actor has Tourette’s Syndrome, so the themes resonated strongly within the cast,” noted Garrard. “Many other students face challenges beyond the typical teenage experience, and through the story of the Ugly Duckling they have learned to find their true inner beauty and let it shine through. Students were encouraged to explore, embrace and celebrate their own differences throughout the process.” In addition to the underlying message, students and the audience could relate to some of the South Florida flair added to Sagemont’s production. For instance, one of the ensemble members played a flamingo and the mother duck wields as pair of chancletas (flip flops), which she uses to reinforce her disciplinary practices. At Sagemont, students have the opportunity to experience the magic of theater in elementary school. The school’s 4th & 5th Grade Drama Club works with the Florida Children’s Theatre (formerly the Ft. Lauderdale Children’s Theatre) to produce a spring musical. This year’s production was Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. Sagemont Lower School Principal Monica Vigna says the school is fortunate for its partnership with the Florida Children’s Theatre. “Their staff will come two or three times per week starting in January to practice with our students. They mentor our students in order to have them prepare for the audition for the play. Once students audition, different roles are assigned. The directors take the time to practice with students their lines, songs, and assist them throughout the process.” Five or six Upper School theater students also assist with the 4th & 5th Grade Drama Club production. Principal Vigna says these students help with sound, lights, make-up, ushering, and more. The younger students also present their show in Sagemont’s Black Box Theatre, on the Upper School Campus. This exposes the elementary school students to a more formal theater setting. “Having the opportunity to participate in our spring production allows students to explore the world of theater,” shares Principal Vigna. “Students learn responsibility since they have to attend rehearsals and memorize their lines and songs. They also learn how to work as a team as well as how everyone plays an important role.” Additionally, Principal Vigna says theater provides an opportunity for students to practice their communication skills and how confidently they are speaking. “For many students, theater even helps their self-esteem, allows for them to learn empathy and compassion, as well as allows for self-expression.”

The Benefits of Summer Camp BY SHEILA WOLDENBERG
I
s summer camp important? Will my child adjust? Will my child make friends? These are some of the concerns that you may have if you are considering summer camp for your child. No worries: the advantages of summer camp – like the advantages of pre-school – far outweigh any reservations that you may have. Your child will adjust if she has loving, attentive and trained counselors. It may take some time but your child will become accustomed to this new experience. All children are different, but generally within a few weeks you will see improvement. Your child will meet new campers and may make life-long friends in summer camp. More than likely your child will make friends because the focus is on play with others. One of the biggest benefits of camp is that your child will be physically active. American children are increasingly less active than they have been in the past 50 years, and as a consequence childhood obesity is at an all-time high. Children need physical activity for their bodies and their minds: studies

have linked cognition to physical activity. We want our children to be academic achievers but that should not come at the expense of exercise. Do you remember physical education in school when you were a student? You may not have wanted to play kickball or tetherball, but you almost certainly looked forward to leaving the classroom and moving around. Summer camp offers endless opportunities to be active. Children learn valuable social skills by attending summer camp: they make new friends and learn the give and take of play. Through play they learn skills that they would not be exposed to while gaming or watching videos: they learn how to problem solve, cooperate and respect one another. Camp allows children to become more confident and relaxed because the focus is on fun. Children connect with nature as they experience the world of science through outdoor activities, field trips to nature parks or indoor science experiments. South Florida is a unique and precious environment; the Everglades are at our doorstep, and we teach our campers about that world. How do you select the right summer camp for your child? Be sure you look for a camp that has trained certified teachers and low teacher to student ratios. I say this because a child’s needs at this age don’t change. They still need guidance to direct them toward appropriate behavior. They still need love and acceptance and they need to stay busy. Summer camp can be a great experience for your child. He will be active and tired at the end of the day, but he may not want to come home with you because he has had so much fun. Sheila Woldenberg is the Director of Temple Dor Dorim’s Early Childhood Center. It has earned and maintained the highest form of accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is currently the only preschool in Weston honored with that designation. Temple Dor Dorim offers a summer camp program for infants through 4th grade. Limited spaces are available. Call 954-389-1232 for more information.

an 83% participant passing rate. The Washington Post named Cypress Bay one of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.” At #174, it was the highest ranked school in Broward County. To create the list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools, The Washington Post evaluated 23,000 U.S. public high schools. The list was determined by how successfully schools provide access to advanced college-level coursework and challenge their students academically. To calculate the index score that serves as the basis for the rankings, the newspaper takes the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge/ AICE tests given at a school each year and divides that by the number of graduates. Cypress Bay had an index score of 5.254. Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie says he is proud of Cypress Bay and the other 24 Broward high schools who made the America’s Most Challenging High Schools 2017 list. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our teachers and school leaders who work tirelessly to implement a rigorous curriculum and encourage our students to reach their highest potential. We are extremely proud of our students who are meeting the challenge and finding success in taking Advance Placement and collegelevel courses.”

nce again, U.S. News & World Report has bestowed its coveted Gold rating on Cypress Bay High School. It was one of only two Broward County Public Schools to earn gold medals. The 2017 Best High Schools Rankings awards the nation’s top 6,041 public high schools with gold, silver and bronze medals, indicating their level of college readiness. According to U.S. News & World Report, Cypress Bay ranked #2 in Broward, #26 in Florida and #257 nationally. The magazine’s rankings are based on how students scored on state math and reading tests, as well as college readiness. RTI International implemented U.S. News & World Report’s comprehensive rankings methodology. A four-step process determined the Best High Schools. The first three steps ensured that the schools serve their entire student body well, using performance on state proficiency tests as benchmarks. For those schools that made it past the first three steps, a fourth step assessed which schools produced the best college-level achievement for the highest percentages of their students. One of the reasons Cypress Bay continually earns a Gold rating is because of its college-readiness scores. Student performance on Advanced Placement exams is used to determine how well the school prepares students for college-level work. According to U.S. News & World Report, Cypress Bay has a college readiness index score of 66.5. The school has a 76% participation rate on the AP exam, with

Imagine Second Graders Succeed at STEM Challenges
SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
I
magine Charter School at Weston second grade teacher Adriana Romero is a big believer in projectbased learning. That’s why she has her gifted/high achiever class engage in various STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) challenges. “In the beginning of the year, I introduced the students to the STEM curriculum. I told them what each letter stands for and explained that they will become scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians as we complete our projects,” explains Mrs. Romero. “Each student has their own STEM binder that is used for collection of project data, pictures, and reflections.” Working mostly in pairs or small groups, the class has completed a variety of STEM projects such as designing and building a load bearing tower that
includes a suspended container, building self-standing windmills, creating marble runs, and researching, designing and building a strong paper airplane that was capable of gliding at least ten feet while carrying the most weight. Mrs. Romero says the weight was measured by taping quarters onto the paper airplane. At the beginning of the year, she explained to the students that not every project would be successful. “Failure is inevitable. It’s part of the learning process,” shares Mrs. Romero. “I told them that if their challenge isn’t met, there is time for reflection and planning on how to improve the design.” Mrs. Romero says watching her students evolve as scientists and engineers was fascinating. “At the beginning of the year, when students were presented with a challenge they would want to immediately
begin building or designing their model with very little planning or researching. Now, I’ve noticed that they would rather have more planning time than allotted. Even after our challenge is over, they will come back to me days later and tell me other ideas on how they could have improved their challenge.” In addition to learning important STEM skills, Mrs. Romero says these challenges and projects have allowed the students to work collaboratively to find solutions and create innovations. “When students work together, they have the opportunity to learn from each other, become engaged in critical and analytical discussions, learn to see different perspectives, and take different roles in a group setting – all skills they will need to be successful in this new information-based and highly technological society.”

History Comes Alive at Indian Trace Elementary School
SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
T
hird grade students at Indian Trace Elementary School were able to rub elbows with some famous figures when students in Amy DuCuennois’ and Arlene Presno’s classes created a Living Museum. “The purpose of the Living Museum was to portray individuals who have had a positive impact on the world,” stated Ms. DuCuennois. The students were able to express their individual interests when selecting which significant figure they wanted to study. The Living Museum featured politicians, inventors, humanitarians, athletes, musicians and more. Among the famous faces were Leonardo DaVinci, Jackie Robinson, Amelia Earhart, Ronald Reagan, Elvis Presley, Steven Spielberg, Sir Paul McCartney, and King Tut. Mrs. Presno explained that this project was a learning opportunity to develop research skills. Students had to read a biography about their chosen person and use additional online resources to gather information to create a biographical scrapbook about the person’s life and accomplishments. “Timelines, mementos and photos were highlighted in the scrapbook.” In addition to the scrapbook, students also had to make a period costume, which they wore to present their scrapbook. Both teachers say they were quite
impressed by the level of detail and authenticity put into the costumes. “Our Queen Victoria purchased her crown while on vacation with her family at the Kensington Palace gift shop,” noted Ms. DuCuennois. As part of the Living Museum, students had to present their scrapbooks to their classmates in first person, while dressed as their historical figure. In addition, the students shared their hard work with parents and other third grade classes. “The kids participated in a parade and performed patriotic songs under the direction of music teacher Linda Saver,” added Mrs. Presno. The Living Museum is just one of many activity-based learning projects Mrs. Presno and Ms. DuCuennois use throughout the year. For another literature assignment, instead of writing a book report students had to create a gameboard.

Cypress Bay Students are Building a Better Community
SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
H
abitat for Humanity of Cypress Bay High School is the largest Habitat for Humanity chapter in Broward County. It is also one of the most active. Its 141 members volunteer almost every weekend, either at a build site or the Habitat Restore. Club Founder and President Matthew Liebman believes one of the reasons Habitat for Humanity is such a popular club is that it allows students to truly make a difference in the community. “We have the connection between students in our school who want to give of their time, learn about the organization and home ownership, and, in general, want to give of their time wisely and for a really good purpose. Habitat for Humanity is something that we can participate in and clearly see our results.” Those results come in the form of helping local families make the dream of home ownership a reality. “Habitat for Humanity finds families in need of a house and works directly with them to create, build, and move into their home,” explains Matthew. “It’s really a beautiful thing, to participate in giving individuals indepen-
dence, a roof over their heads, protection for their families, and responsibility.” On the housing sites, club members work alongside professional builders and contractors doing tasks such as painting, landscaping or trussing. At the Habitat Restore, Matthew says the student volunteers organize the merchandise, help customers, repair broken items, and clean. In addition to their countless hours of manpower, the Cypress Bay club has also raised more than $7,000 for Habitat for Humanity through car washes and bake sales. On Sunday, June 11th it will host the first annual Habitat for Humanity of Broward 5K Color Run at Markham Park. Matthew predicts it will become one of the marquee events in the community. “We wanted to bring the community together to raise money to support a building project in Broward,” shares Mathew. “Our Color Run will offer residents the opportunity to run, walk, or crawl across the finish line as we throw colored powder on them to celebrate their participation and completion of the run.” After the Color Run, participants and supporters can enjoy a concert featuring five bands formed by Cypress Bay students. There will also be activities such as pin the door on the house, potato sack races, a sponge race, and volleyball game. Food trucks and vendors will also be on hand. To register for the Habitat for Humanity of Broward 5K Color Run go to www.habitatbroward.org/colorrun. The cost is $30. The race starts at 7:45am on June 11th at Markham Park. ith a school as large as Cypress Bay, selecting the most exceptional or most deserving students is no easy task. Each year the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) must do exactly that for its Lightning Awards ceremony. The annual event celebrates the winners of the Lighting Award of Excellence as well as the PTSA Scholarships. The Lightning Award of Excellence is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. Recipients were chosen based upon grades, community service, school involvement, as well as their written essay. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 weighted GPA and be involved in at least two activities at school or in the community. The PTSA Scholarship Award is for graduating seniors with a minimum 3.5 weighted GPA who will be attending a university, college, junior college, or vocational school full-time in the summer or fall following graduation. of documented community service and have two legitimate examples of leadership experience. Eight students received PTSA Scholarships. The $1000 recipients were Maria Jaramillo, Anabel Lin, Matthew Ulino and Cole Kauffman. The $500 recipients were Greyson Fletcher, Taylor Barton, Jenna Rabinovitch and Stephanie Stone. “I never imagined I would win the PTSA scholarship. I was up against so many other students who had much better grades than me, so when I heard my name I was honestly in shock,” shared scholarship winner Jenna Rabinovitch. “It’s honestly an amazing honor and I am so thankful the PTSA could recognize me in such a great way that will help me continue to involve myself in as many things as I can as I start the next chapter of my life in college.” Her mother, Elena Rabinovitch, was pleased to see PTSA recognizes well-rounded students. “Extracurricular activities are a critically important part of rounding out a child’s high school experience, in
order to balance having some fun with the challenging academic schedules. We appreciate the PTSA focusing on students who devoted themselves to being involved and bettering the high school community.” Erica Gardner’s son, Cobi, was one of the Lighting Award winners. “He enjoyed being honored at the ceremony by receiving a certificate and pin. PTSA did a nice job in recognizing students for their hard work.” PTSA President Mindy Siegel says all the Lighting Award of Excellence winners and Scholarship winners deserve congratulations. “Thank you to all the students who participated. It was such a joy for our PTSA Executive Board to put the ceremony together.” Latoya Stucke chaired the Lighting Awards committee. In addition to the awards presentation, the event included a musical performance by the Cypress Bay Chorus led by Mr. Frank. The Cypress Bay ROTC presented the Colors before the ceremony.

Gator Run Elementary Helps Chomp Out Cancer
SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
S
adly, cancer touches all of us. That includes children. Students at Gator Run Elementary School are stepping up in the fight against cancer, literally. This year, the school started a Relay For Life of Weston team and raised over $5,000 for the American Cancer Society, making it the top ranked school team. Gator Run Relay Captain and Second Grade Teacher Tara Slosson says the school decided to create a Relay team after being approached by the American Cancer Society. The team name is Gator Run Elementary Chomping Out Cancer. To build support for the team, the school created t-shirts, which students could purchase. Gator Run raised $1479 from the t-shirt sales, which it donated in a check presentation to representatives from the American Cancer Society. Students, and families, could also support the cause by decorating luminaria bags for a $5 dona-
tion. The Luminaria Ceremony is a Relay For Life tradition here in Weston. After dark, the entire track is lined with luminaria decorated to honor cancer survivors and remember those who lost their battle. Cancer has personally touched the Gator Run family. The school had three survivors walk as part of its Relay team – Intern Principal Cyndi Felton, First Grade Teacher Shannon Martinez and Fourth Grade Teacher Lynn Mitchel. Gator Run students and families also came out to Relay For Life to support the school’s team, with the PTA volunteering at the circus-themed tent. “We had a spin-and-win game. We also sold candy and snacks to help raise money,” shares Mrs. Slosson. “One-hundred percent of the money raised
that night went directly to the American Cancer Society.” In total, Gator Run Elementary Chomping Out Cancer raised $5,290, from its t-shirt sales, online donations through the team’s website, luminaria sales and money raised at Relay. It was the 5th highest ranked team out of the 53 Relay teams. Considering this was the school’s first year participating in Relay For Life of Weston, “That is something we are very proud of,” states Mrs. Slosson. She is also proud of the students who supported the Gator Run Elementary Chomping Out Cancer team. “Getting children involved in helping their community is very important. It teaches them the importance of being a model citizen.”
Indian Trace Family Bands Together BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents at Indian Trace Elementary School have learned a valuable lesson this year. One of compassion and caring, as the entire student body has rallied together to support a friend in need. Last December, fourth grader Mikayla Hylton started suffering from severe headaches that left her sick and weak. On January 13th, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery three days later. Pathology results revealed Mikayla had Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor. She immediately began occupational and speech therapy along with grueling physical therapy. Mikayla had to learn how to sit, stand and walk again. She also had to regain the motor skills on her right side since they were weak because of the tumor. In February, Mikayla and her parents traveled to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where she underwent six weeks of radiation. In May, she returned to begin chemotherapy. While Mikayla battles cancer, her classmates are hard at work raising money to support her and her family. The Student Council designed wristbands in Mikayla’s favorite color, purple. Each is printed with “Heal a Heart” on one side and “Strength, Courage, Hope” on the other. Student Council President Joel Cortes and Vice President Amanda Sanchez have been making appearances on the school’s news program to promote the fundraiser. “I’m so proud of the Student Council Officers and all the members. They have been diligently making posters, selling wristbands, promoting on the morning news, and stepping up to help a fellow Tracer,” shares Student Council Sponsor Uvi Delgado. “It really shows the incredibly supportive community that we live in here in Weston.”

The Indian Trace faculty has also stepped up to help. Music Teacher Linda Saver came up with the idea of holding a Spring Dance as a fundraiser. Students donated $20 to attend the afterschool function. Mrs. Savor, along with Coach Mark Logsdon, played DJs, while students and teachers showed off their best dance moves. Between the wristbands and the dance, the Indian Trace family has collected more than $5,000 to benefit the Hylton family. A YouCaring.com page for Mikayla has also been created to help the family defray the costs of medical expenses and traveling to and from St. Jude. The Weston community can donate at www.youcaring.com/mikaylahylton-744153. “Indian Trace Elementary is a family. When one of our family members is hurting, we all feel it,” shares Principal Amy Winder. “I’m so proud of the way everyone has rallied to support one of our own in need. We are looking forward to Mikayla’s return.” Until then, Mikayla will stay connected with her classmates through the use of HopeCam. It allows her to skype into lessons while she is receiving treatments and recovering.

S
pinal pain -- such as back and neck pain -- is one of the largest and fastest growing health care challenges in the industrialized world. The costs of this epidemic are enormous. In the United States alone, about $50 billion annually is incurred as a result of low back pain. What can be done to gain control of this problem? In order to provide appropriate and effective treatment for any suffering patient it is imperative to identify the exact source of their complaint and the mechanism of their injury or condition. In most cases of back or neck pain, where is the pain coming from, and why? New research into the nerve supply of spinal discs, together with clinical studies on pain, has dispelled many long-held beliefs about the source of back and neck pain. Strong evidence now points directly to the intervertebral disc (the ‘cushion’ between each vertebrae) as one of the primary sources of pain. Following the disc, the next most common originator of pain is the joint capsule (the tough ligamentous covering that encapsulates spinal joints). What irritates or damages the disc to cause pain? Two primary factors have been shown to irritate or damage spinal discs: acute hyper-flexion loading of the disc, such as sudden lifting of a heavy object in a bent-over position, and sustained loading of the disc, such as prolonged sitting. In both cases, positions of flexion where the normal spinal curves are reduced or reversed is the mechanism by which compressive loads are applied to the spinal discs to create injury. This has been demonstrated in several studies that show many back and neck pain sufferers tend to have less lordosis (lumbar and cervical curves) than normal. Adverse loading of the disc may also be the result of abnormal posture and repetitive unilateral activities, all of which load the disc asymmetrically. Thus, many factors can cause damage to the disc, resulting in impaired disc nutrition and eventual deterioration, producing pain. Most spinal pain, therefore, is a direct result of loss of normal spinal alignment and curvature, and abnormal posture causing asymmetrical disc pressure. In our office, caring for patients with spinal pain begins with a detailed physical exam that includes a comprehensive history, postural evaluation and other procedures to objectively assess the structural condition of the spine and the spinal curves. Once we understand the mechanism of injury, the exact abnormal postures that contributed to disc damage and the condition of the spinal curves (alignment), appropriate and effective treatment can be provided. For example, “Linda” recently came to our office for help with chronic headaches and neck pain. She had tried medication and various therapies, to no avail. When we examined her, x-rays revealed she had significant misalignment of the vertebrae in her neck. This misalignment was causing disc compression, joint stiffness and nerve irritation, a condition chiropractic doctors call spinal subluxation. To help Linda regain her health, it was imperative that our treatment correct the subluxation in her cervical spine. Following a program of precise, gentle chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitative procedures to improve the spinal alignment and function of her neck, Linda was re-evaluated. Not only was her pain gone, but most importantly, new x-rays demonstrated near-normal alignment. With her subluxation finally corrected, Linda could now look forward to happiness and better health in the years to come. 13 Reasons Why a Yoga Class Is Better Than the Gym BY CAROLINA SANCHEZ
1. Yoga benefits the mind, body and spirit. Yoga will help tone your body, but it also helps you to be truly in the moment and infuses your spirit with positive energy. A gym workout is focused primarily on improving your body’s physical condition. 2. Yoga benefits your full body—externally and internally. The twisting, stretching and folding of a yoga practice are good for the digestive, the circulatory, the lymph systems and more. Its detoxing effects can improve your cardiovascular system developing stronger muscles. A gym workout is focused just on strengthening muscles and boosting cardio. 3. Yoga teaches acceptance. Yoga helps you accept the way you are—with your strengths and your weaknesses. Yoga is not about self-improvement, it’s about self-acceptance. Gym classes, especially boot camp style classes, are more likely to have you feeling like a failure if you can’t do everything. 4. Yoga will make you lean. By stretching your muscles as you’re strengthening them, your body will take on a leaner appearance. A gym workout filled with weights will cause your muscles to bulk up. 5. Yoga is more efficient. Yoga relies on your own body for strengthening through asanas. Your full body becomes toned and stronger by using your body weight as ‘weights’. By using only weights or other equipment like at the gym, muscles are isolated and must be worked individually to benefit, which takes a lot more time. 6. Yoga is kinder to the body. This does not mean yoga is not intense. Yoga builds heat and works your muscles, but you’re doing what your body allows you to do and not attempting to lift weights and pound on the joints—which can cause injury. Yoga also stretches as you move through the postures and a good yoga practice builds on itself to prepare the body for the next position. 7. Yoga eases your aches and pains. A gym workout increases them. Yoga slowly stretches muscles and opens the energy channels of the body. The increased flexibility keeps muscles and joints lubricated and healthy. Weights and treadmill can cause strain which leads to soreness and injuries. 8. Yoga helps you breathe easier. During times of stress, it’s easy to forget to breathe—really breathe, and not just shallow breaths. Without deep breaths, it’s harder to think clearly and fatigue can set in. Yoga focuses on the breath so that when you need it most, those deep breaths are the norm. 9. Yoga is calming. We move through practice with a calm, relaxed expression. No grunting, no dropping weights, no clenched teeth or grimacing expressions like you see from gym-goers. The overall intention is to release tension throughout the body and mind. 10. Yoga reduces stress. Many yoga classes include meditation, or at least Savasana. It gives you a chance to clear the mind. With practice, stressful situations can be dealt with more easily and overall stress levels decrease. The competitive nature of a gym along with the loud music and bright lights is more likely to increase your stress. 11. Everyone can practice yoga. No matter your age or your health, you can practice yoga. Yoga has even been found to help people who have health ailments ranging from Parkinson’s to cancer. Gym workouts, in general, are not designed to be therapeutic, or senior friendly. 12. Yoga improves concentration. During a yoga practice, you focus on the breath, the posture and the gaze. Outside distractions are tuned out. While you can try and do this at the gym, this focus and silence is not exactly encouraged with all the other distractions around, like loud music, TVs, etc. 13. Yogis rock. We’re a happy bunch! Wouldn’t you rather be around smiling, happy people? You’ll get to be in an environment where people accept your, and everyone else’s, curves and edges. There’s no talk of who held what pose longer, no sense of competition. It’s always good vibes all around! Carolina Sanchez is the owner of Weston Yoga and Wellness Center. Habitual Toe Walkers BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
ASK THE EXPERT

A
t the beginning of independent walking, toddlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months, the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven. Tightness of the calf muscle is the primary cause of the child that toe walks. Underlying neurological disorders have to always be ruled out. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common in boys and in many cases is a cause of concern. Treatment of habitual toe walkers is necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, physical therapy or stretching at home may be of benefit. If unresponsive, serial casting may be necessary. Serial casting is a process in which the foot and leg are placed in a cast with the foot held in a neutral position. The muscle is placed under stretch while the cast is on and walking is strongly encouraged to help the muscles stretch. Children who are sedentary who are placed in a cast do not get the same benefits as those that are active. Casts are applied every ten to 14 days until the muscle is slightly overstretched. It may take as little as two to as many as eight weeks to improve the muscle flexibility. The casts are applied one leg at a time to allow for the activity level needed for successful treatment. Following the casts, a night splint may be used for up to six months to maintain calf flexibility. In rare cases, the muscle is too tight to respond to serial casting. Surgical lengthening of the Achilles tendon through three little holes in the skin may be needed. It is an outpatient procedure. Casts are applied postoperatively for six to eight weeks. Once healing takes place, physical therapy is provided to maintain lower extremity strength and flexibility. An excellent long-term prognosis is the norm. Carlo A. Plastic Surgery Trends for 2017 and Beyond BY DR. TAMY FAIERMAN
Plastic Surgery Continues to Boom!
Plastic surgery is expected to be the biggest emerging market by 2020 according to a report from Persistence Market Research. Europe and North America will dominate the global cosmetic surgery market. This is due to the growing aging population and a general acceptance of aesthetic procedures. Doctors who have practiced cosmetic surgery for many years have witnessed significant paradigm changes, noting a significant shift toward non-invasive procedures and patients looking for a quick fix of their necks, chests, hands, elbows, and more.
Up Next…Designer Fillers.
This year we have already seen the introduction of even more targeted products (niche fillers) such as Restylane Refyne and Defyne, which are designed specifically to improve smile lines while maintaining expressions in the face, and lasting over a year. Other new products such as Juvederm Volbella, aim at lip enhancement and Juvederm Vollure for mid-face lifts that can target specific concerns more effectively than ever before. Additionally, there are now three approved neuromodulators on the market – Botox Cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin -- and there are more in the pipeline. Many of these newer products are rumored to last seven to eight months.
Mommy Makeovers.
Breast lifts, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and a combined surgery of these procedures (often referred to as the mommy makeover) continue to grow. Abdominoplasty is up 87% since the year 2000. The post-bariatric population is growing as well. As people become more fit and aware of their overall health, this procedure will continue to skyrocket.
The Neck.
The neck is still slightly unchartered territory and we will continue to see new and improved products. Kybella, the newest Allergan product for double chins, is just the tip of the iceberg. These fat-melting injections may also have a role in treating other stubborn pockets of fat such as bra-line rolls, above the knee fat and more. Also promising is a topical treatment for localized fat treatment. Topokine latanoprost, a topical agent acquired by Allergan, is the real deal. Phase three studies and pivotal trials will be necessary to achieve approval, but if they confirm the results of early studies, this will be a first-in-class topical agent that can reduce localized fat.

ach year aesthetic associations and global wellness institutions release data trends based on the prior year. These stats tell us which procedures are trending and which ones are losing steam. A cosmetic surgeon who deals with patients day in and out sees these trends in their daily practice and can often see how they are panning out ahead of the data. Culturally we also see how wellness trends are affecting which procedures patients ultimately select and how they are choosing to care for themselves in the long run. This often can affect whom and why they choose the doctor they want to work with as well. With 2017 in full swing, here is a forecast of some of the trends that will gain momentum as the health and wellness paradigm evolves for the future.

Can Chewing Gum Prevent Cavities in Your Child?

O
ver the last five decades, fluoride has been added to community water supplies across the country. As a result, we have seen a 50% reduction of cavities in these communities, as well as a 50% reduction in the dental healthcare costs for children. The numbers are even higher when its use is combined with proper diet, oral hygiene techniques, and use of topical fluorides. Still, the dental community searches for other methods of reducing the incidence of “caries” (cavities). Such a finding would be most helpful to those unable or unwilling to make use of fluoride. One of the more promising substances is xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute derived from agricultural products. It has been around since the 1960’s, but has not been tested for use in humans for the purpose of oral health until the 1990’s. Most of the studies use chewing gum as the delivery system of choice. Optimal results are gained with three daily uses. This dosing achieves a reduction in plaque formation, reduces acid production, and interferes with the production of the specific bacteria which initiate cavity formation. Cumulatively, these attributes result in cavity reduction.

What seems most promising is the use of xylitol by new parents to reduce cavity formation in their newborns. Babies are not born with the bacteria, which cause cavities. These bacteria are naturally transmitted to the mouth of a child by a parent or caregiver. This usually occurs through everyday contact, such as sharing of food or blowing on a hot spoon. The use of xylitol has been shown to delay the transmission of some of the most deleterious bacteria and resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities for these children. In one particular study, xylitol chewing by mothers beginning three months after the delivery of a child for a period of two years resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities in the children till an average age of six years. Of course, with such positive results many new xylitol products have been launched into the marketplace. Companies are manufacturing a number of products, such as mints, mouthwash and toothpaste. However, the only method of delivery clinically proven to have these effects is chewing gum. Personally, I can’t wait to bite into the first xylitol infused ice cream sundae! Drs. How Well Do You Hit Your Fairway Woods? BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL
1. Ball Position forward (one ball-width inside of your left heel) Ball position is critical. This will promote the club head to strike the ball just before the low point promoting a descending blow through impact. The low point of the swing’s arc is located just outside the lead shoulder with the shoulder itself being the center of the circle. With the driver, ball position is played more adjacent to the lead heel which positions the ball even closer to the swing’s low point. This allows the driver to meet the ball at the bottom of the arc just before where the fairway wood meets the ball. 2. Hands in-line with the club head This allows for a player to hit down, but not to where the club head will stick in the ground. With the ball position just inside the lead heel, the butt of the club should
point just left of the belt buckle resulting in a more perpendicular club shaft angle at address. One of the most common errors at address with fairway woods is positioning the hands too far forward of the club head. This sees the butt of the club point left of the body and this is not the best place to be when hitting these long clubs. Leaning the club shaft forward at address is a good thing with short to mid irons, but as you enter the long game you must be very conservative when it comes to this dynamic at address. 3. T ilt the upper body slightly away from target With the upper body tilted slightly away from the target, this will assure your head will be behind the ball. This again helps to promote the proper angle of approach into impact. Get this angle correct and you will see more consistently solid shots and more power with the fairway woods. Where spine tilt is recommended with an iron it almost seems to be mandatory when hitting woods for most people.
TEE TO GREEN
O
ne of my favorite shots in golf is watching the best players in the world hit fairway woods trying to reach par 5’s in two. This shot is another example of just how good they are when controlling their ball flight from long distances. Fairway woods are an important part of the game, and on the lesson tee we get many questions about how to hit them. The first step toward better fairway wood play is to understand the angle of approach. You will notice when Tour players hit fairway woods, they still hit down on the ball allowing for the loft of the fairway wood to lift the shot. Although the angle of approach is not as steep as that of an iron, the club head still needs to be moving downward when striking a fairway wood. Controlling this angle of approach into impact is the key to striking solid fairway woods. Here are some key checkpoints at address to help manage the proper angle of approach:
Dean Sklar, PGA
4. Square Shoulders One of the most common errors with the fairway woods is taking the upper body and facing the forward ball position. Make sure your shoulders are square at address as this really helps swing the fairway woods on the proper angle of approach. I would rather see most amateurs slightly closed with the shoulders rather than open. When the shoulders open and aim left, this will promote a more upright angle of approach which usually isn’t the best thing for most people. PGA Professional Dean Sklar is a member of the Quarter Century Club of the PGA of America, an elite group of members who have served the PGA with honor and pride for 25 years. Eat Right to Protect Your Sight
O
ur eyes are one of the most essential parts of life and an important part of our health. Maintaining a healthy weight can help maintain your eye health. Eating a rich diet in fruits and vegetables is very important for keeping your eyes healthy. It’s no old wives’ tale that carrots are good for your eyes; it’s true. Fish is also good for your eyes. According to research, there are many health benefits to eating fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut. Optometrists recommend taking a fish oil supplement, because it contains all these ingredients that are good for overall eye health. Omega-3 fatty acids help to control and prevent severe eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts. By eating a healthy diet, you can maintain healthy vision by preventing eye diseases. One of the biggest nationwide problems is obesity. Obesity rates have been rising in the recent years and pose as a major threat to overall health, particularly vision. A large amount of weight can put too much stress on the blood vessels located in the eyes. These vessels are very delicate and can easily deteriorate, which could lead to poor vision, or even glaucoma. During an eye exam, the doctor will test eye pressure. If the pressure is too high, the Retina doctor will recommend additional tests be done to determine if you could be developing glaucoma or at risk to develop it. Cataracts are another concern. They are caused by improper nutrition and the environment. People who are overweight often do not get good nutrition, which could lead to poor vision. Vitamins that are essential to ocular health include Vitamin A and Omega 3’s. Those who do not participate in a healthy diet lack these nutrients, so the risk of eye disease is increased. By being overweight, the progression of eye disease can speed up. Taking appropriate steps to eating Retina a balanced diet and losing weight will help support healthy eyes, so you will be less likely to suffer from any eye diseases. For good eye health, eat a diet of fish, vegetables, eggs, nuts, juices, and protein. By educating yourself on the potential dangers of eye diseases, you can help prevent them from occurring.

The Process of Hiring an Attorney
2017 bestof weston
2016 2015 bestof bestof weston weston
BY EVAN BARON
I
am quite aware that the last thing most people would ever want to do in their lifetime is hire an attorney. Except for the purchase of a home or business, for the most part the hiring of an attorney is necessary only when a crisis occurs. It could be due to an accident, a run in with the law, a death in the family or a divorce. On occasion, individuals may feel as if an attorney is not really necessary. Unfortunately, handling a legal matter without advice from an attorney can often mean unwanted results. So how does someone decide if they need an attorney and, if so, who should they hire? I have met with several individuals who have either attempted to handle their particular matter without the assistance of an attorney or they have been unhappy with the representation they have received from the attorney they in fact did hire. In most of these situations I was not able to assist them in “undoing” the unwanted result. For the most part, we do not get a “do over” in court. Once a decision is made by a judge, it is in most instances a final decision. The fact that an individual feels that his/her attorney did not properly represent him/her will not be considered grounds to overturn the court’s decision. Neither will the fact that a person was unrepresented in court. Unless you are prepared to file an appeal, most people get one chance to present their case and obtain their desired results.

If the decision has been made to retain an attorney, how do you choose the one that is right for you? In my opinion you should look for someone who has experience in the field of law that concerns your case. In most instances, however, the most important factor is cost. In some areas of practice the total fee for representation can be determined at the beginning of the case. In criminal matters, there is usually a set fee quoted; depending on the severity of the offense charged. In personal injury matters, fees are usually based upon the amount recovered, with a percentage going to the attorney. These fees are called contingency fees. In family law, matter’s fees are usually determined by the time necessary to finalize the case. This often presents a problem when I discuss fees at my initial consultation. Understandably, a prospective client wants to know what a divorce is going to cost. I explain that since my fees are based upon my time, I cannot predict the total fee unless I know the number of hours a case will take to get to completion. Not knowing the total cost of representation can make a person insecure. A retainer or down payment is required to get the case started. It is made clear to the new client that this is only a down payment and is not necessarily the total cost. Each case is different and each attorney may have different billing practices. It is best to “shop around” and find the attorney who is best suited for your particular set of circumstances.

PET OF THE MONTH
Traveling With Your Dog BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM
PET CARE
O
“Dash”
ur pets share so much of our lives that many of us don’t want to consider traveling without them. Whether you are flying, driving a car, or RVing, sharing a trip with a pet can add richness to the experience. Proper planning can make the travel experience better and less stressful for you and for your pet.
Dash is a ten-year-old Catahoula Leopard Hound. His favorite person is his “Big Daddy”. Dash loves chewing his bone, belly rubs and going for long walks. He does not like unwelcome visitors in his backyard. Dash was last seen chasing a squirrel out of his yard.
What should I bring when traveling with my dog?
Changing your dog’s food can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other problems that can be difficult to deal with while traveling. Try to bring enough of your dog’s regular food for the duration of the trip, and try to maintain the feeding and toilet schedule your dog is used to at home. If your pet receives medication, bring enough for the trip and try to maintain your regular schedule. If you are traveling by car or RV, bringing your dog’s favorite bed, blanket, or toys can help make the trip more relaxing and pleasant for your best friend. If you are flying, you will need an airline-approved carrier for your dog; you should also request that your dog fly in a temperature-controlled cargo area.
How should I plan for travel with my dog?
Spontaneity and family emergencies aside, most of us wouldn’t take a trip without planning some things ahead of time. The same thing applies when traveling with your dog: Where to stay: Many hotels and rental properties allow pets. Locating proper accommodations and being clear about fees (some places charge an extra fee for pets) can help minimize anxiety when you arrive. Travel requirements: Most airlines require a health certificate for pets that will be flying. The health certificate generally states that the pet is in good health and free from any infectious or contagious diseases. Don’t assume this document can be obtained from your veterinarian on the way to the airport. Your dog may need a physical examination, fecal exam, or other procedures before your veterinarian can sign a health certificate. Also, the certificate must be obtained within a certain window of time before you travel.
Should I sedate my dog for travel?
Giving a tranquilizer to a dog before traveling has pros and cons. Sedation can have side effects, including lowering body temperature (which could be an issue if your pet is flying in the cargo area of a plane), and causing hypotension (low blood pressure). On the other hand, light sedation can calm a dog that is overly stressed or excited while traveling and can therefore make the trip more pleasant for everyone involved. Remember that sedation does not address all travel issues; if your dog has severe motion sickness or gets extremely stressed while traveling, it may be better to arrange for a pet sitter or board him or her. Also, not every dog is a good candidate for a tranquilizer, so ask your veterinarian if sedation is an option for your dog. If you have never given your dog a tranquilizer before, give a test dose ahead of your trip. Pick a day when you will be home with your pet for most of the day. That way, if the medication causes excessive sedation or other negative side effects, you will be there to intervene and call your veterinarian for help. DSJJ Team’s Internationally-Acclaimed Judo Program Now Available in Weston BY STACEY BOMSER

ith 20 years of success in Sweden and Brazil, DSJJ Team has opened its fifth martial arts studio, and first in the United States, here in Weston. The family-oriented studio specializes in self-defense and fitness classes for children and adults. Owner Duda Soares shares more about his proprietary program and why DSJJ Team has been so successful.
What is DSJJ Team? I am the creator of the methodology that car-
ries the name DSJJ – Duda Soares Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. It is used all over the world, not only in our own studios, but also in more than 20 Team Nogueira gyms, owned by UFC brothers Minotauro and Minotouro.
What is unique about the DSJJ methodology? We emphasize the “DSJJ values,” which are the philosophical principles by which Judo was developed. We address those principles in the classes and connect them to the students’ daily challenges outside of the gym. What types of classes do you offer? We
have martial arts and fitness classes for adults and kids, with classes scheduled for parents while their kids are in their own activities. We also offer adult Judo and Jiu-Jitsu classes at night. Our Ninja Class has been extremely popular. It is an introductory class for kids where they have their first contact with Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Capoeira, Karate, boxing and self-defense in a playful ninja circuit. In addition, we offer afterschool and summer camp programs. Our Nerf War Birthday Party is already a huge success!

convenience. Not only do we offer programs for parents and children at the same time, we also offer pick-up in our van for our afterschool program as well as regular classes, in order to make the parents’ daily routines easier. We are proud of our family environment, where the kids feel completely at home and do not want to leave after their classes. And because we love when the kids want to stay longer, we do not charge afterhours fees. It is our best reward!
Is there anything else you would like readers to know about your business? We understand the coach is an
idol and we take full advantage of this, using the opportunity to bring up the best in every individual. We offer high level classes for kids and adults based on my large experience as an athlete and coach, and as one of the founders of Instituto Reação, a non-profit organization in Brazil which promotes social inclusion for underprivileged kids through Judo and education. Last year, Rafaela Silva, one of the athletes from the program, won an Olympic gold medal in Judo. This was a very emotional moment for me, because I have been one of Rafaela’s coaches since she was a young girl. DSJJ Team is located at 1647 Bonaventure Boulevard. Dreams Come True at Kitchen Designs & More IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
BY STACEY BOMSER
S
ince 2003, Kitchen Designs & More has been helping Weston residents turn their houses into their dream homes, whether that be by installing a new state-of-theart kitchen, redesigning the master bathroom, or creating a functional home office. The full-service design center handles everything from concept to completion. President and Owner Elliott Landman shares the secrets to this company’s success and why hundreds of Weston homeowners recommend KD&M for home renovations.
What is Kitchen Designs & More? KD&M is made up of a
group of passionate and highly qualified designers, architects, and project coordinators with over 100 years of experience. We handle the design, project coordination, and acquisition of materials for all in-home projects, ranging from kitchens and bathrooms to flooring projects, home offices, wall units, wine rooms, libraries and more.
What services do you provide?
We start out with an in-home visit in order to have a conversation about our client’s wants and needs for their project, to give our insight and design options, and to take the necessary measurements. Between our next meetings, KD&M will create a full design, line-byline cost estimate, and proposed schedule of the project so that our clients will have a full idea of the scope of the project, from financial to time requirements. Once the design is approved, our expert
90
design team will help choose materials and orders are finalized. Afterwards, the final schedule is provided. From that point forward, Kitchen Designs & More will coordinate each aspect of the material deliveries and completion of labor.
Why do you put such emphasis on client contact? KD&M is
mindful of each individual client and their family’s needs, with regards to budget, timing, as well as any other special factors and we work hard to reconcile the details of the project with those needs. Our goal is to make the project as enjoyable, transparent, and less stressful as possible for our clients.
What distinguishes Kitchen Designs & More from its competition? Our team of
designers has over 100 years of experience and is known in the Weston community for the quality of our work. We are the only local kitchen design and project coordination showroom in Weston, located next to Acquolina. We are with our clients every step of the way, from start to finish, making sure that they are constantly in the loop and with the least amount of stress possible for the duration of their project.
What do you do to support the community? We’ve enjoyed
success thanks to the community and we feel our bottom line should include supporting community organizations.

Through our “Designed to Give” campaign, KD&M will donate 10% of all kitchen cabinetry sales in our client’s name to the organization of their choice through July 31st. Over the years, we have supported Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Women in Distress, Kids in Distress, American Diabetes Association, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Autism Awareness, local houses of worship, and numerous other
community organizations.
Anything else you would like to add? We offer free consultations
and estimates. Give us a call or stop in our showroom anytime Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 5pm to chat with one of our experienced designers or project coordinators. We invite you to browse our beautiful selection of materials from around the world.

Shoulder Injuries Treated with Arthroscopy Heal Faster with Less Pain New surgical techniques and better pain management enable easier recovery
Vani Sabesan, MD Orthopaedic Surgeon
Remember Operation, an electronic board game in which one wayward movement causes other body parts to spasm and a loud buzzer to sound?
Just like in the board game, an injured rotator cuff can wreak havoc with other body parts – and every day activities like writing and eating – because it’s the rotator cuff that allows us to lift and rotate the arm. The rotator cuff is composed of four muscles plus attached tendons and other tissue in the shoulder. It holds the arm in the joint and helps attach the humerus (long bone in the upper arm) to the elbow, neck and torso. Rotator cuff tendons can tear from age, overuse, traumatic injury, or a fall. When it is injured, even reaching for a book can be painful, and a tennis match or golf outing would be nearly impossible. Understandably, shoulder injuries used to be among the most dreaded by weekend warriors and professional athletes alike. In fact, a rotator cuff injury was often a career-ending incident in sports. “Shoulder patients can experience much quicker recovery and much less pain using
the arthroscopic techniques developed in recent years,” said Vani Sabesan, MD, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in the upper extremities. “Today, my patients return to their preferred activities quickly.”
“Prior to arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair required months of post-operative rehabilitation and many patients avoided the surgery,” said Dr. Sabesan. “Using arthroscopy, we can help our patients return to a fuller life without constant pain.”
Instead of a large incision circumventing the shoulder, Dr. Sabesan uses an arthroscope, a pencil-sized instrument with a tiny camera at the tip, to examine and repair the tissues in the joint. Recovery is quicker, and less painful when compared to an open procedure.
Arthroscopy can treat other ailments including shoulder instability or dislocation, torn biceps tendon, bone spur, inflammation or damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis, a torn or damaged cartilage ring (labrum) or ligaments, shoulder impingement syndrome, and arthritis of the collarbone. Surgeons also use arthroscopes to treat knees, hips, ankles, elbows and wrists.
Using arthroscopy also minimizes swelling, and allows patients to begin their postoperative rehabilitation sooner. In the last few years, other innovations have made the recovery process easier, including surgical improvements and better post-operative pain management. According to Dr. Sabesan, who is a team physician for the Florida Panthers, sutures today use new materials that do not require intra-operative knots. Overall, the procedures are less abrasive to the tissue. New, long-acting pain medications used following surgery last for 72 to 96 hours. Often patients need little or no pain medication after their initial recovery due to the new techniques.
A painful shoulder condition or injury can impede writing, eating, dressing, hair brushing, and other activities of daily living. With newer techniques and appropriate rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery can fully restore movement in the shoulder. Consult with a board-certified subspecialty orthopaedic surgeon to see if you are a candidate for arthroscopic surgery. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Sabesan, call 877.287.2963.
