A Little Turbulence on Your Flight?
W
e love to travel. In fact, we fly to exotic and not-so-exotic locations, both close to home and around the world, on a fairly regular basis. Despite our love of travel, Christy is not a fan of bumpy flights. For her, a little bit of turbulence will create enough anxiety to set flight attendants off for a glass or two of wine! This makes us all the more thankful for the brave men and women who routinely fly into the world’s most turbulent skies. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), along with the U.S. Air Force, maintain a fleet of aircraft known as the “hurricane hunters.” These modified warplanes routinely fly in the opposite direction of rational human beings to collect data as hurricanes approach populated areas. A typical mission keeps the aircrew off the ground for 11 hours. That is about the time it would take to fly from Miami to Moscow! Imagine the roller coaster ride these dedicated public servants are on flying through a hurricane. The aircraft used for these incredibly important missions are modified C-130 cargo planes and P-3 Orion submarine hunters. Both were chosen because of incredibly reliable service records and the fact that they are slow. Fast, high-altitude jets are not very useful for collecting atmospheric condition data; however, slow propellerdriven planes are perfect. Unless, you have motion sickness. The planes use a number of radars, instruments and “drop” devices to collect a myriad of data. These data are uploaded, in near real-time, to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Forecasts and hurricane track projections using Hurricane Hunter data are as much as 30% more accurate than just satellite and radar projections. So, the next time your flight is a little bit bumpy and the captain turns on the fasten seatbelt sign, be thankful for that Hurricane Hunter flight crew of six, flying 10,000 feet above a stormy sea in winds that would knock over an apartment building! eston is ready to weather the storm this hurricane season. Are you? With hurricane season now officially upon us, now is the time to make sure you, your family and your home are prepared in the event that a severe storm heads our way. The City of Weston is asking all residents to get ready. here are heroes among us here in Weston. While some fight crime or care for the sick, others teach the young or help the less fortunate. This year’s City of Weston 4th of July Hometown Parade honors The Everyday Hero. “First responders, military personnel, doctors and others are often lauded for their bravery and passionate service to others, but there are plenty of everyday people who do amazing work that benefits our community,” explains Director of Parks and Recreation Don Decker, whose department coordinates the City’s Independence Day festivities. “This year we will honor those unsung heroes.” Decker says The Everyday Hero is significant because there are many everyday heroes that help make our community institutions the successes they are. “They bring heart to our community organizations.” The parade Grand Marshal will be chosen from nominations submitted by community organizations. But Decker says everyday heroes will be evident throughout the parade. “It is safe to say a lot of these

everyday heroes will be participants in the parade, whether they know it or not. Rotarians who raise money for causes, a church volunteer who feeds the needy, the band mom who is handing out water to the marchers after the parade. Hopefully the groups who have these everyday heroes among them will find a way to celebrate them.” As in past years, Decker says there will be about 50 entries in the parade. Participants include elected leaders, civic organizations, cultural organizations, local businesses, marching bands, sports teams, scout troops, and much more. The 4th of July Hometown Parade begins at 10:30am at Weston Town Center. Decker says the event usually attracts about 3,000 spectators. He recommends people arrive early to secure a spot along the parade route, which starts on Three Village Road just north of the Town Center Publix and marches through the streets of Weston Town Center.

Weston University Students Take Field Trip to Washington, D.C.

rom Weston to Washington, D.C., the Weston University Program has covered all forms of government. A one-day field trip to the nation’s capital was the culminating activity for the one-of-a-kind civics program. As soon as the plane landed, the Weston U students, along with Mayor Daniel Stermer, Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie, City Manager John Flint, Director of Technology Services Ryan Fernandes, BSO Deputy Kari Pallotto and Director of Communications Denise Barrett-Miller and her staff, boarded the bus to begin their whirlwind tour. In less than eight hours, the group toured The Capitol Building, where they stopped by Senator Marco Rubio’s office, posed for pictures in front of the White House, and visited almost
all of the memorials and monuments in the National Mall. Prior to the trip, the students were provided with key facts about each location and its historical significance. “While the Weston University curriculum focuses mainly on local and state government, we also study the legislative and financial impacts of the federal government. The trip to our nation’s capital brings it all together for the students,” explains Denise Barrett-Miller, Director of Communications and Weston University organizer. “During the field trip, students are able to personally see where the legislation of our country takes place, as well as the monuments dedicated to and in honor of individuals who shaped our nation and those who served to defend our country.” The Weston University program provides a unique civic education to high school students. Over the course of the school year, students spend time interacting with city leaders and participating in hands-on activities while exploring the different departments and agencies that make up our local government. The program concludes with a simulated City Commission meeting.

ast year’s tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was a frightening wake-up call to many Weston parents. If it happened there, could it happen here? Hopefully not because the officers of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District are trained and prepared to protect the children of this community. According to Kevin Butler, BSO District Chief for the City of Weston, he, along with every Deputy, Sergeant, and Lieutenant, attend active shooter training courses each year. In addition, all Weston Deputies and BSO staff have taken tours of every school in the City of Weston (all nine Broward County public schools and Imagine Charter School). Weston Firefighters toured the schools with the Deputies and specific Firefighters have been issued helmets and bulletproof vests. “All Supervisors have maps (floor plans) of each school in the City,” explains Chief Butler. “Weston Deputies and School Resource Officers have participated in active killer presentations with school staff.”

Each Weston school has an assigned School Resource Officer and Cypress Bay High School has two full-time officers. Chief Butler says all School

Royal Egg Hunt Provided Hopping Good Time BY STACEY BOMSER

housands of children scrambled to collect some of the 30,000 candy-filled eggs at this year’s Royal Egg Hunt. The event is a time-honored tradition in the Weston community, with families of all faiths joining in the fun. The free event was open to all children, ages ten and under. With many dressed in special holiday outfits, the kids were as cute as bunnies as they ran around collecting the colorful eggs. All eyes were on the lookout for one of the special “golden” eggs, which could be redeemed for small prizes. After the egg hunt, families were able to capture priceless memories posing for pictures with the Royal Bunny and taking pictures in front of a special backdrop. Children could burn off their excess candy-fueled energy by jumping in the bounce houses and dancing to music provided by Jimmy Jam Productions. The annual Royal Egg Hunt is presented by the City of Weston and coordinated by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Conventional medicine continues to deal with chronic illness by targeting symptoms without really taking the time to investigate what is causing the problem in the first place. Weston Relay For Life Continues to Raise Funds and Awareness BY STACEY BOMSER
H
undreds of survivors, caregivers and supporters turned out for the 2019 Relay for Life of Weston. The annual overnight event raises funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer. Event Lead Jennifer Clark-Reich says this year’s Relay was a huge success. So far it has raised a little over $150,000 dollars, but still has not reached its final goal. “Right now, Weston Relay is ranked 3rd in Broward County, but we are hoping to change that. Fundraising continues until August, so it’s not too late to support this important cause.” In addition to financial support, Relay offers social and emotional support to cancer survivors, as well as their caregivers. Clark-Reich says seeing all the survivors coming together to celebrate their journey in the Victory Lap is always uplifting and one of the reasons we all Relay. “I had the chance to speak with a survivor who thanked me and told me how she came to the event for the first time last year and didn’t know anyone but was able to meet people during our Survivor Dinner,” shares Clark-Reich. “She continued to say how they exchanged numbers and have become friends since. It reminded me why we do this
event and what made me fall in love with Relay eleven years ago.” Sadly, not everyone survives their battle against cancer. The somber Luminaria Ceremony is a Weston Relay tradition. Clark-Reich says this year’s ceremony began with a moving speech by a caregiver remembering a member of our community that was recently taken from us. It was followed by a slideshow with pictures sent in by family members of those that have survived and those we have lost. Afterward, everyone gathered on the track to do a silent lap following the bagpiper playing Amazing Grace. Travel was the theme of this year’s Weston Relay, with teams accordingly decorating their campsites and t-shirts. Awards were given including Best On-Site Fundraiser to Ultimate Software, Best Rookie Team to the Cypress Bay Lighting Drama Department, and Best T-Shirt to Sole Sisters Too. In addition to hundreds of members of the Weston community, Mayor Daniel Stermer and several of the City Commissioners attended Relay, along with Broward County School Board Member Robin Bartleman, State Representative Richard Stark, and Jen Herrera from NBC6 in the Mix.

Jazz Cabaret Concludes Weston Music Society Season

he Weston Music Society concluded its cultural season with an intimate afternoon of music. Yamit and the Vinyl Boulevard performed before an audience of over 100 music lovers at the Bonaventure Country Club. Yamit and the Vinyl Boulevard is considered the crème de la crème of jazz bands in South Florida. The ensemble performs at some of the most notable and upscale venues, so it was an honor and privilege to have

these talented musicians perform for Weston Music Society patrons. The ensemble is led by vocalist and violinist Yamit Lemoine. Her specialty is songs from the 1920’s-1960’s, presented in jazz and traditional style. She was accompanied by the Vinyl Boulevard, a jazz trio made up of Jim Gasior on keyboard, Lucas Apostoleris on drums, and Lowell Ringel on bass. Weston Music Society patrons may remem-
ber Ringel from when he performed here last year as part of a jazz trio from the University of Miami Phillip Frost School of Music. “We are so pleased to have made a connection with the jazz community to enhance our offerings to our residents,” states Weston Music Society Co-President Andrea Burghardt. “We know they appreciate all forms of fine music.” Co-President Lou Marett notes,
“One goal of the Weston Music Society is to bring the best of all musical genres to our community. This music cabaret certainly fulfilled that goal.” During the afternoon performance, the audience was treated to Yamit and the Vinyl Boulevard’s jazz renditions of songs such as Pennies From Heaven, Sweet Georgia Brown, Summertime, I Won’t Dance (Don’t Ask Me), Teach Me Tonight, A Kiss to Build a Dream On, I Get a Kick Out of You, Besame Mucho and La Vie en Rose. Next month, Weston will welcome the Symphony of the Americas’ Summerfest concert. This program features highly-acclaimed European musicians joining the Symphony of the Americas orchestra in presenting an evening of light classics and Latin rhythms. Weston Friends Travel Club Builds Relationships and Encourages Exploration BY STACEY BOMSER

ravel has a way of connecting people. Friendships are formed over shared experiences and cultural exploration. The Weston Friends Travel Club started last year as a way of bringing Weston Friends Club members closer together. Members engage with each other while discovering new places to visit. Weston Friends Travel Club Chair Darcy Conner says the club is open to anyone with a sense of adventure and wanderlust. The group, which meets about once a month, has had travel vendors come speak, including Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Oceania Cruise Lines, and toured the Regent Seven Seas Voyager cruise ship and the Azamara Journey. Plans are to invite escorted tour providers and travel via train suppliers to speak in the coming months. In addition to travel industry representatives, club members can also share stories about their travels. Conner says she recently took an African Safari in Uganda, where she went gorilla trekking, and plans to talk about that experience at an upcoming meeting. “Fall foliage, river cruising, expedition travel, specific destinations such as Alaska, the Mediterranean and Europe, seeing the Northern
Lights or an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean are all on many bucket lists and subjects we will talk about in the coming months and year.” While members often talk about their personal trips, Conner says the focus of the club is to travel together not independently. “Group travel has many advantages: creating lifelong bonds and friendships and, of course, group travel enables one to overcome fear and anxiety about traveling alone whether it’s internationally or domestically.” Although the Weston Travel Club has not yet planned its first group getaway, Conner says they are working toward that goal. “Our plan is to definitely

try and make traveling with the club possible in an environment that supports the members’ physical health, offers friendships and promotes confidence and enjoyment, so we are taking into account all of the members’ needs and wants as we start planning.” Acknowledging that not everyone enjoys the same type of travel vacation, Conner says the plan is to offer a variety of cruise and escorted tours throughout the upcoming year. She invites anyone in the Weston community with an interest in travel and meeting new people to join the Weston Friends Travel Club. “The time is now to get out and explore and exploration with friends is the best way to do it!”

BY DISTRICT CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN s the school season comes to an end and many families are preparing to enjoy their well-earned vacations, soaking up the sun or lounging in a pool, the Broward Sheriff Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services - Weston District would like to share the following safety thoughts: Hurricane season starts June 1 and so does our rainy season. If you haven’t already prepared, now is the time to review your plan and gather supplies well ahead of any potential storm. Hurricane kits should include essentials for all members of your home – including your pets – such as non-perishable food, water, and medical supplies to last three to five days after a storm. A full list of suggested supplies is available at https://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit. According to the National Weather Service, Florida is the lightning capital of the country. This is also South Florida’s wet season, with thunderstorms passing through almost daily. An average of 47 fatalities by lightning strikes are reported each year, seven here in South Florida alone and hundreds more are injured. Don’t risk being struck – when thunder roars, go indoors. If you can see lightning or hear thunder, immediately seek shelter inside a building that has electricity or plumbing or a vehicle with a metal roof. Stay away from large trees and open bodies of water. Once indoors, avoid corded phones, computers, sinks, showers, and windows. Storms are not the only concern during this season, hot temperatures can cause heat related medical emergencies such as sunburn, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke if the proper precautions are not taken. Wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more and using sunshades will help protect against overexposure to harmful UV rays and the painful sting of sunburn, just because it is not sunny does not mean it is safe. It is important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water throughout the day and stay away from beverages with alcohol or caffeine, which can dehydrate the body. Sunburns can reduce your body’s ability to sweat and cool your core. Older adults, small children, and pets are among the most vulnerable to heat injuries. When parking your car think L.O.V.E. (leave our vehicles empty). Never leave a child or pet inside a parked vehicle. Even with the windows partially open, temperatures inside can exceed 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. Swimming – in pools and at the beach – is one way to stay cool this summer. Remember pool safety is everyone’s responsibility and you should always practice water safety: never leave a child unattended near any body of water, swim with a buddy, and always provide dedicated adult supervision wherever children are swimming. tarting or building a business is never easy. Fortunately, Weston women venturing into entrepreneurship can get help from peers through Women of Weston (WOW). It is a support group providing a safe space for local women to share business ideas and grow together. Women of Weston was mooted about a year and half ago by florist Ruta Rouvs. She had moved here from Holland and wanted to start a floral business. Unsure of how to go about that, she drew support from her neighbors and friends and has now made a name for herself. WOW is Rouvs’ way of giving back. “I wanted to be able to do this for other women and moms. So, I gathered some friends from different areas of business to start a support group for women in business,” explains Rouvs. “There are so many women out there in our community
with amazing careers and business experiences, including many who may currently be out of the workforce while they raise their children, and we hope to tap on these women to share their knowledge.” WOW’s first meet and greet attracted about 30 women, but the support group now has 136 members, and is looking for more women to join. Unlike a business networking group, WOW is about women helping women more so than generating referrals. It is warm and supportive. “We aim to provide a safe space for women to share business ideas and grow together,” states Rouvs. “We want to help women start or run their businesses better.” In addition to sharing business advice and words of encouragement, WOW members enjoy a variety of educational and social programs. According to Rouvs, WOW offers

Addressing the Humanitarian Crisis in Venezuela BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK his 2019 Session has many accomplishments and addressing the issue of support for the good people of Venezuela was one that I am proud to sponsor. HM205 was adopted as a House Memorial which requests the U.S. Congress to urge the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to allow the delivery of humanitarian assistance and to intensify financial sanctions against the regime of Nicolas Maduro. Florida will not be silent while millions of people continue to be oppressed. The adoption of Florida House Memorial 205 says to the people of Venezuela: we support you, we have not forgotten you, we are with you. Florida will not be silent in opposition to the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro. This memorial is addressed to the Congress of the United States, requesting Congress to urge the government of Venezuela to allow the delivery of humanitarian assistance, to continue and intensify financial sanctions against the regime of President Nicolas Maduro, and to instruct appropriate Federal agencies to hold the regime of President Nicolas Maduro accountable for violations of law and abuses of internationally recognized human rights. The hallmark of democracy is the free and peaceful exercise of rights guaranteed under the constitution of a democratically elected government. In an effort to secure his personal rule and oppress Venezuelan freedoms, the regime of President Nicolas Maduro manipulated elections, established an illegitimate Constituent Assembly to undermine the will of the Venezuelan people, nationalized private industry, abandoned private property rights, and generally assumed control over the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and its institutions. The deterioration of basic governance and the economic crisis in Venezuela have led to an unprecedented humanitarian situation in which people are suffering from severe shortages of basic food products and essential medicines. Despite the massive shortages, the regime of President Maduro has rejected repeated requests from civil society organizations to bring humanitarian aid into the country. Over eight million Venezuelans voted symbolically for a free and democratic government. The regime of President Nicolas Maduro has sought to silence peaceful opposition to his government by killing innocent citizens of Venezuela for their political views. Those who cherish democratic principles condemn the perpetration of oppression and intimidation against the Venezuelan people. Numerous Western Hemisphere countries, including the United States, assert that Nicolas Maduro is not the rightful president and, instead, recognize Juan Guaido as the Venezuela’s interim president. The people of Florida stand proudly with the people of Venezuela in the face of tyranny. I will continue this mission until Venezuela is a true democracy once again. Let’s hope that our members of the United States Congress share my concerns, both humanitarian and political. I am proud to say that our local members support these efforts as well.

Gator Run Elementary Wins First Place at SECME STEM Olympiad BY STACEY BOMSER
F
or the second year in a row, Gator Run Elementary School won first place overall in Broward County Schools’ SECME STEM Olympiad. The team also won first and second place in the Mousetrap Car competition and first place in the Essay contest. Science Resource Teacher Susan Beren says she is extremely proud of the effort and accomplishments of her students. “I’m a proud ‘momma’,” she boasts. “Actually, these students have been engineering since they were toddlers when playing with toys such as building blocks and racing cars on tracks. SECME builds on what they already know. Science concepts experienced personally and learned in school enhance the understanding of how to engineer successful designs.” The SECME STEM Olympiad has been held in Broward County for over
30 years, with students at the elementary, middle and high school levels competing in engineering events. At the elementary level that means build-

Mrs. Beren believes it benefits students academically and helps prepare them for the future. “STEM activities promote critical thinking and analysis and they give students the opportunity to function as a team of workers who share ideas, strategies and viewpoints respectfully to solve problems. These practices are exactly what is needed in today’s workplace, and especially in a technological society. There are over one million job openings in the fields of engineering and computer science in the United States right now that go unfilled.”

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe,
there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot. An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated. n Carlo A. Everglades Elementary Second Graders Explore Family Heritage BY STACEY BOMSER
A
merica is a melting pot attracting immigrants from all over the world. While each family has its own unique story, many share the commonality of ancestors arriving at Ellis Island in the early 1900’s. As part of a Social Studies unit on immigration, students in Caroline Long’s second grade class at Everglades Elementary researched how their family first arrived in the United States. After completing a unit on immigration, Colonial America and the history of the Ellis Island Immigration Center which took in 12million immigrants, the class took part in an Ellis Island Reenactment. “I wanted students to share their family history so they could learn about their heritages and really connect to what it may have been like to enter Ellis Island from another country,” explains Mrs. Long. For this project, students had to interview a relative who immigrated
to the United States. They then had to create a PowerPoint or poster explaining their family member’s experience. During the presentation, students also had to convey to their classmates the cultural influence and contributions their heritage brought to this country. To add to the authenticity of the Ellis Island Reenactment, students were asked to dress up according to what

their family trees and families learned more about their ancestry through this project.” She notes that one student was able to trace their entire family tree back to 1642. Other children included family photographs from the early 1940’s in their presentations. According to Mrs. Long, this interactive lesson taught students much more than what they would have learned from a book or worksheet. “Students were able to delve deeper into the topic and overall the lesson projected a sense of understanding that we are truly a melting pot. Students were better able to see that a lot of our foods, beliefs, practices and art are inspired by other cultures brought to this country by immigrants.”

We must encourage each child to recognize their Innate Intelligence or Inborn Intelligence. Innate Intelligence exists naturally, from the moment of birth in each individual. It is the intelligence that tells our body how and when to function. It is also responsible for intuition, instinct and transmitting life from the brain to the rest of our body as well as bestow the inborn, raw talent and traits of the child. All living things have an Inborn Intelligence, however, as humans from a very young age, we are easily distracted by the external stimuli and lose touch with our inner power and potential. It is important to recognize, nurture and understand the power of our Innate Intelligence. In our modern world Inborn Intelligence is commonly measured through IQ scores, however, ongoing nature/nurture controversy will extend to say that Inborn or Innate Intelligence is actually determined either naturally from birth or environmental influences. Dr. Inderbir Kaur Sandhu, who holds a Ph.D. in Psychology of Gifted Education, explains that “Inborn Intelligence is natural (heredity) and environmental influence determines the development of intelligence. Educationally, an aptitude test predicts a student’s Inborn Intelligence (more of nature), whereas an achievement test reveals what the student has learned in school (environmental influence).”

Hurricane Season is Here – Be Prepared BY STACEY BOMSER

he 2019 Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1st and runs through November 30th. Early predictions are for an average to slightly-above average season in terms of activity. Experts from Colorado State University’s hurricane research team forecast 13 named storms of which five will become hurricanes and two will become major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger). For comparison, during an average hurricane season there are 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes. While the number of storms predicted this year is close to normal, the overall activity – based on the intensity of storms and their energy – is expected to be slightly below average. “This year, we think that there will be a few less tropical storms and lower numbers in hurricanes, but again, the old saying is ‘it only takes one’,” cautions AccuWeather Atlantic Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski. That being said, now is the time to start preparing your family and your home for hurricane season. The first thing you should do is put together your hurricane supply kit, stocked with all the essentials you will need to provide for your family during and following a storm. Be sure to include flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries, first
aid supplies, cash, food and water, and copies of all critical documents. You should also create a family emergency communication plan; know how to get in touch with each other, especially if phone or internet service is knocked out. Register for text and/or email alerts for emergency notifications.
Prepare your home by trimming tree branches and limbs and securing and clearing rain gutters and downspouts. Now is also the time to make sure your hurricane shutters are in proper working order. The beginning of hurricane season is also a good time to familiarize yourself with the terminology. It’s important that you understand exactly what the meteorologists and newscasters are saying and what that means. Here are some of the most common terms as defined by the National Hurricane Center: Tropical Cyclone – an organized rotating system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has a closed lowlevel circulation Tropical Storm – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph Hurricane – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher; a major hurricane is when winds are 111 mph or higher Hurricane Warning – hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected in an area; issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset Hurricane Watch – hurricane conditions are possible; issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset

What To Do When A Storm Approaches BY STACEY BOMSER

wo years ago, Hurricane Irma set her sights on South Florida. While we were fortunate and escaped the brunt of her powerful strength, that scare was enough to remind us all of how important it is to be ready for hurricane season. Here are some helpful tips on what you need to know to be prepared before, during and after a storm. As the storm approaches Start preparing your home before the storm gets near. That means covering windows and doors with hurricane shutters and bringing in outdoor furniture, garbage cans, and anything else that is not tied down and could become airborne. Charge your cell phone and back-up batteries in case you lose power. Withdraw cash from the bank, as ATM’s will not work in a power outage. Gas up your car and buy extra gas if needed to fuel generators or gas-
powered tools. Fill aluminum or plastic containers with drinking water; you need enough for one gallon per person per day for at least three days. In addition, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with water for bathing and flushing toilets. Turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary; this will help keep food safe longer if the power goes out. During the storm Monitor your radio or television for weather updates and instructions from public safety officials. Also check emails and social media sources for emergency notifications. Stay inside, preferably in an interior room with no windows. If the power goes out, use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns; do not use candles or kerosene lamps during the storm. Do not go outside during the eye of the storm – it may appear calm but hurricane-force winds will resume shortly. This is NOT the time to clean-up around the house. After the hurricane Listen to local officials for updates and instructions; do not go outside until authorities say it is safe. Many
disaster-related injuries occur in the aftermath of the storm – watch out for debris and downed power lines. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock a person down and fast-moving water can sweep a car away. In addition, flood water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. It could also hide dangerous debris. Once it is safe to walk around outside your home, photograph any damage to the structure or property to assist in filing an insurance claim. Don’t forget to check-in with family and friends to make sure everyone is safe.

ummer is synonymous with fun in the sun – kids playing outside, time at the beach or pool and family vacations. And with the increased physical activity, the chance of injuries can also rise. So what are some of the most common injuries during the summer that cause minor emergencies and require urgent care? Baptist Health Urgent Care personnel see a wide variety of injuries during the summer months, ranging from dehydration and sunburn to cuts and sprains and even upper respiratory infections. Healthcare professionals at Baptist Health Urgent Care locations say they definitely attribute the uptick in certain conditions to the summer heat and increase of outdoor physical activity. Some of the most common minor emergencies they treat this time of year are:
Heat-related Illnesses
▸▸ Dehydration and Sunburn – symptoms can include extreme thirst, nausea and fever. Remember to always use sunblock and stay hydrated, especially if spending long periods of time outdoors. ▸▸ Cuts, Sprains and Fracture - Lacerations that need stitches, sprains that can be treated with slings or crutches and broken bones diagnosed by x-ray. ▸▸ Gastrointestinal Issues - The U.S. Department of Agriculture report an increase in food-borne illness un the summer months. Outdoor cookouts and the associated heat and humidity make them the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. ▸▸ Insect Bites and Stings - More time outdoors means more chances of getting a bite or sting from mosquitoes, spiders and fire ants. Seek immediate attention if severe allergic reactions such as facial swelling, difficulty breathing or weakness occur. ▸▸ Sunburns - Most sunburns can be relieved with at-home remedies such as aloe vera and ibuprofen. A sunburn that results in blistering, extreme pain or chills should prompt a visit to the nearest urgent care facility.
Children’s Health in the Summer Summertime for kids also means a break from school and more time outdoors. Unfortunately, the increased activity can also mean more injuries. Bicycle-related injuries are one of the most common, according to a study by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy. It found that more than 2.2 million children were treated in U.S. emergency departments for bicyclerelated injuries between 2006 and 2015. Boys ages 10 to 14 are the most likely to be injured, the study says, and the majority of the injuries are bruises, scrapes and cuts. Bicyclists should always wear a helmet. Asthma in kids is another condition that requires attention during the summer months. Heat and humidity and seasonal allergies to summertime blooms can activate asthma. If a child is having a non-severe asthma attack, Baptist Health Urgent Care providers suggest bringing them to a nearby facility to be checked and prescribed inhalers, if needed. And when they’re getting ready to return to school in the fall, many kids need back-to-school physicals. What’s In Your Bag?

s we enter hurricane season, it’s essential that every family have a fully-stocked emergency supply kit. After a hurricane, or other emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days until aid can arrive. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that everyone have enough food, water and necessities to last for three to five days. A basic emergency supply kit should contain one gallon of water per person per day to use for drinking and sanita-
tion. You should also have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for each person, along with a can opener. That includes baby formula and baby food. You also want to include mess kits or paper goods and plastic eating utensils. Every emergency kit should have a battery-powered or hand crank radio, preferably a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries. Flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries are also essential. Other necessities include a first aid kit, whistle to signal for help, and household cleaning supplies including garbage bags. You may need to go several days without running water, so it’s good to stock moist towelettes along with other personal hygiene items. Be sure to include a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

and make sure you have charcoal or propane for the grill. While that’s what you need for a basic hurricane supply kit, FEMA does have a list of extra items you should consider adding. Be sure to include eyeglasses and any prescription medication you or someone in the family needs. If you have a baby, your kit should include baby care items such as disposable diapers and wipes. Don’t forget to prepare for your pet’s care as well with pet food and extra water. It’s a good idea to include sleeping bags or blankets and pillows for each member of the family. Your kit should
also contain a change of clothing for every member of the family, including sturdy shoes as there may be a lot of debris. Emergency kits should also include an extra set of car keys, cash because ATM’s and credit card devices might not work without power, and books, games, puzzles and other activities to keep entertained if there is no TV or internet. Lastly, make sure to gather all important documents in waterproof containers. Stellar Season for Cypress Bay Sports BY STACEY BOMSER

ike the power of lightning, Cypress Bay High School dominated during the winter sports season with every team qualifying for post-season play. Cypress Bay Athletic Director Scott Selvidge says it was an impressive showing in every sport. “The boys and girls soccer teams won their District championship. The girls advanced to the State Finals, where they lost to Palm Harbor, 1-0. As such, they finished as State Runner-up. The boys
soccer team advanced to the Regional Semi-Finals. The girls basketball team finished as District Runner-up and lost in the Regional Quarterfinals. The boys basketball team captured its 7th District Championship in the past eight years and advanced to the Regional Finals. Unfortunately, the boys lost on a buzzer beater to Wellington High School. Tequesta Trace Middle School Students Excel at ESOL Competition BY STACEY BOMSER
T
equesta Trace Middle School took home a total of 62 recognitions from the ESOL Academic Competition. That included an impressive 18 trophies, along with numerous colored medallions indicating different levels of proficiency. The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program at Tequesta Trace is taught by Judith Ann Franco and teacher assistant Margaret Giraldo. They work with students who speak Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Chinese as their heritage languages. ESOL students work in two languages every day at school. Students volunteer to participate in the ESOL Academic Competition. According to Ms. Franco, the children work hard to prepare with before school practice sessions, in addition to in-school preparation. “There is a lot of dedication and perseverance demonstrated by the students.” That was certainly evident when you see the sheer number of awards Tequesta Trace earned while competing in nine categories: declamation, original oratory, impromptu speaking, spelling bee, writing, plays/skits, talent, media and, last but not least, art. Ms. Franco says for the declamation category stu-
dents recited work by Edgar Allen Poe, Rudyard Kipling, Craig Kielburger, Pat Mora, Shakespeare, Dunya Mikhail, Wislawa Szymborska, and more. “Tequesta Trace Middle School’s greatest accomboth won individual trophies for Writing. Country Isles Music Clubs Promote Performance and Personal Development BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents at Country Isles Elementary School have the opportunity to advance their music skills by joining one of two extracurricular music clubs: the Strings Club and the Recorder Club. With a focus on performance, these clubs are mainstays at events such as the school’s annual Winterfest celebration. “The clubs are for students who have a strong desire to go further with their music education and develop higher order music skills on a particular instrument,” explains Music Educator Walter Halil. “I also want to provide students with the opportunity to participate in a music ensemble so they can experience the joy of making music with others.” The Strings Club is open to third through fifth grade students with some prior experience playing bowed string instruments such as the violin, viola, cello or bass. The students learn to play all styles of music from classical to calypso and jazz to pop.
“This year, we’ve been working on Hoe Down, a fiddle tune, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, a folk tune, The 12 Bar Blues, jazz improvisation and blues style, Ode to Joy, a classical piece, Power Rock, rock music, and Baby Shark, pop music,” shares Mr. Hadid. The Recorder Club is open to fourth and fifth grade students who have mastered the instrument. All Country Isles students learn to play the recorder as part of the third-grade music curriculum. “The recorder is a popular instrument because it is inexpensive, durable and very portable so that students can easily transport it from home to school in their backpacks,” explains Mr. Halil. “It is also easy to play for younger students in that it doesn’t require any exertion to play.” The Recorder Club plays many of the same songs as the Strings Club with a few exceptions of songs that are well-suited for the recorder such as Sponge Bob Square Pants, Down by the Station, and Dance of the Reed Flutes.
The music clubs are a nice complement to the extracurricular activities offered at Country Isles Elementary. Mr. Halil encourages students to explore these opportunities, stating that the benefits of music education are numerous. “Studies have shown repeatedly that children who participate in music activities overall benefit academically and socially, and those benefits continue on into adulthood,” explains Mr. Halil. “Cognitive science has shown that everyone has some musical intelligence just like verbal or spatial intelligence, and it can be nurtured to benefit the development of the whole child.” While Music is one of the Specials classes all elementary school students take, Mr. Halil encourages his students to further their music education in middle school and high school. “Playing in a band or orchestra, aside from allowing a student to follow their aspirations, can give a student a sense of belonging. Under the guidance of a skilled director, students can also develop great listening skills and the ability to empathize with others.”

How is the Local and National Market? BY PHYLLIS SCARBERRY ccording to Steve Harney, a national prognosticator, last fall, some people predicted that the 2019 residential real estate market would be a disaster and perhaps lead to a housing crash. However, according to two separate reports, buyer demand dramatically increased over the last three months, leading into this spring buyers’ market. Why the increase in demand? Increased buying power. New research shows that 66% of millennials who currently rent are determined to buy a home. Seventy-three percent of those surveyed plan to buy a home in the next five years, with 40% planning to do so within the next two years. According to the National Association of Realtors’ Economists’ Outlook Blog, purchasing a home has become more affordable, which has led to increased demand.

“Due to the combination of falling home prices and mortgage rates, the income needed to make an affordable mortgage payment (mortgage no more than 25% of income) on a medianpriced home with 10% down payment and 30-year fixed rate mortgage decreased from $60,425 in June 2018 to $53,783 as of February 2019, and the difference of $6,642 represents a gain in buying power because one can afford a home purchase at a lower level of income.” Those are national stats. What about Weston? Currently, there are only 340 homes available in Weston ranging from $320,000 to $1.8 Million in Windmill Reserve. The median-priced home is $659,000: a 5-bedroom, 3.5-bath, 2-car garage residence with 3051 square feet (under air) in Savanna. Everglades Elementary First Graders Help Four Legged Friends BY STACEY BOMSER
E
ach year, first grade classes at Everglades Elementary School join together to conduct a service project. It’s part of a Social Studies lesson on how to be a good citizen. This year, children donated items to benefit the Human Society of Broward County. The teachers picked this organization because they knew it would appeal to students, many of whom have pets of their own or share a love for animals. “We taught our students that the Humane Society takes in unwanted or injured animals. They take care of the animals and make sure all their needs are met,” explains first grade teacher Mara Miller. “To help them do this, we collected dog and cat treats and toys, soap, sponges, peanut butter and apple sauce. We got the ideas from the Humane Society website. One family even donated a cat playhouse.” Colleague Marcy Winer says the children were eager to support this
cause. “I knew the students could personally relate to this service project because many of them have gotten their own pets from the Humane Society.” According to Mrs. Miller, the ultimate goal of the Humane Society is to find a loving home for each and every animal. “They rely on the help of the community and volunteers to do this.”

Mrs. Miller says, “We explained to the children that a lot of the workers are volunteers. Yoga Elective Gains Popularity Among Falcon Cove Students BY STACEY BOMSER
A
bout 200 students took yoga as an elective this year at Falcon Cove Middle School, and instructor Carly Feduniec expects even more to enroll next year. The class, which is open to all grade levels, was put in place because students suggested it two years ago. This year, students have learned restorative, yin, vinyasa, hatha and acro yoga. Ms. Feduniec says she is surprised at how open students are to learning new styles of yoga and trying different meditative practices. What she is not surprised about is how adolescent students benefit from yoga. “Overall, yoga enables students to have a better sense of their emotions. By
developing a better understanding of their emotions, teens can then more appropriately process them,” explains Ms. Feduniec. “In addition to connecting with your emotions, yoga encourages self-love and selfacceptance. It builds compassion for the self, which then radiates to compassion for others.” She believes learning to be more mindful is especially important for this generation that is so engrossed in technology. “There is a social-emotional component that they may be missing out on. Considering the perspectives and feelings of others is integral to maintaining healthy relationships and being taught to become more self-aware and

regulating thoughts and emotions helps with that.” Yoga has academic benefits as well as socialemotional. According to Ms. Feduniec, “Yoga can help students mentally refocus on the task at hand. By practicing living in the moment on the mat, they can more fully concentrate on the present moment off the mat. Staying present can also help with attention and memory retention.” Ms. Feduniec considers it a gift to have been able to introduce yoga to Falcon Cove students, adding that it has helped her as a teacher as well. “Kids have so much energy and love trying new things. I have thought of fun ways to do yoga, through what I have named ‘Glowga’, partner yoga, and acro yoga. I also incorporate sound bowls and drums into the practice. Keeping it fresh for them has been fun for me as well.” She also keeps the class interesting by inviting instructors from area yoga studios to speak to students and do yoga flows, meditations and sound healings with them. In addition to teaching the yoga elective classes, Ms. Feduniec does yoga and deep stretching exercises with the school’s cross country and boys football teams.

Indian Trace Elementary Dual Language Teachers Share Best Practices BY STACEY BOMSER
T
eachers often tell their students you never stop learning. That was case in point when the Dual Language teachers at Indian Trace Elementary School hosted Sharing Best Practices Day, opening up their classrooms to Dual Language teachers from other Weston schools and throughout Broward County. “Once each quarter, the Dual Language program hosts a Sharing Best Practices Day designed to support both the English and Spanish teachers involved in the Dual Language program,” explains Third Grade Spanish teacher Patty De Biase. “This benefits teachers because we can share with our peers and also network.”
This was Indian Trace Elementary’s first time hosting the program. Mrs. De Biase says the teachers went all out to welcome their peers, including decorating the Media Center and serving a Mexicanthemed snack. Of course, the purpose of the program was to share best practices. “Our focus was how to incorporate Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) and Keystone, an alternative portfoliotype assessment, into the Dual Language classroom,” explains Mrs. De Biase. During the afterschool program, the teachers collaborated by sharing ideas and lessons. That was followed by a tour of all the Dual Language classrooms. “The tour was the highlight of the afternoon with our visiting teachers taking pictures of centers, projects and getting ideas for their classrooms,” shares Mrs. De Biase. “This was a chance for us to voice and address our concerns and, of course, our best practices.” She and the other teachers look forward to these
quarterly get togethers. “It’s a chance to network with other teachers so that we can collaborate and make our program better.” Dual Language teachers at Weston elementary schools are fortunate. They are able to rely on each other for support and advice throughout the year. Eagle Point Elementary School was the first to start a Dual Language program and it now offers two tracks. According to Mrs. De Biase, “That means they have a set of kindergarten to fifth grade students in the program and another track that started a few years ago and is now kindergarten through third grade. Next year it will expand to fourth and so on.” In the Dual Language program, students are taught half the day in Spanish and half in English. It is offered to both Spanish and non-Spanish speakers.

Gator Run Fifth Grader Pens Prize-Winning Essay BY STACEY BOMSER
Y
ou could say Isabella Baumann has been STEAM-ulated by science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. The Gator Run Elementary School fifth grader’s essay, entitled The Brain Awakens, won first place in the 2019 SECME National Student Competition. Isabella says winning the top prize was very unexpected. “I was excited and happy because it took many weeks of research and hard work to complete it. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to write my essay, and then win for my school.” Science Resource Teacher Susan Beren says Isabella was the obvious choice to write the essay for the competition. According to Mrs. Beren, not only does Isabella like to create, design and build things, but she also loves to express her thoughts verbally and in writing. In her essay, Isabella wrote about how SECME has helped prepare her for a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics)

career. “It awakened my brain to so many possibilities for the future. If you are thinking that you want to be an architect, then the designing in SECME and engineering that you

can learn while in the program will help you. If you are talented at thinking up ideas, then you can help the world by creating blueprints that might lead to something amazing! All of these things can happen just because you joined SECME.” Personally, Isabella aspires to become a veterinarian. She was inspired by a TV commercial for Chase Bank that shows a veterinarian using a 3-D printer to make prosthetic devices for animals. She says this would be her dream job because it combines two career paths she would love to take – veterinary medicine and engineering. Images of animals and scientific terminology are depicted on the vision board she created as part of the essay assignment. Isabella was also
inspired by the fact that the doctor in that commercial was a woman. She believes more girls need to get involved in STEAM subjects. “I noticed that when a young child thinks of a scientist or engineer, they do not always automatically think of a female. There are many females in these fields, but not nearly enough. Women are just as capable as men in STEM careers. SECME allows young girls to realize their potential and learn their dream career while having fun.”

Low-Speed Whiplash Injuries BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER
T
he term whiplash was first coined in 1928. Though primarily used to describe the type of injury suffered in rear-impact automobile accidents, over the years whiplash has also been used to refer to any neck injury caused by sudden motion of the head. Because of problems associated with the term whiplash, other phrases have emerged in recent years to try to better describe this type of injury, such as “cervical acceleration/deceleration (CAD) injury” and “cervical hyperextension/hyperflexion injury”. All these terms have short-comings, and as a result whiplash still remains an integral part of medical jargon. One of the most controversial issues in the study of whiplash – and one of profound interest to both the insurance and legal fields – revolves around injuries reportedly sustained in low speed rear-impact crashes. Can such collisions cause occupant injury? A study by Brault published in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (1998) gives support to the claim soft tissue injury can occur as a result of low speed rear-impact collisions, despite the fact crash velocities are often so slow as to produce no damage to either vehicle. In this study, human volunteer subjects underwent rear-impact collisions in which the crash velocities were set at 2.5 and 5 miles per hour. Of particular significance is these volunteers were first screened for any pre-existing spinal conditions, then seated in optimal positions with headrests positioned correctly, and finally were aware of the impending crash. In real-life accidents it is exceptionally rare to have all of these conditions in the occupant’s favor. For this reason, the results of this study are especially compelling. Under laboratory conditions designed to minimize injury, a significant 29% of occupants were found to have sustained injury at a crash velocity of 2.5 mph, and fully 38% sustained injury at 5 mph. In the real world, victims of rear-impact collisions were often not anticipating the impact, their head may have been turned, their seated posture was very likely poor resulting in their head being too far from the headrest, and frequently their headrests were positioned too low. Each of these factors amplify and compound the trauma that occurs to muscles, ligaments, joints, nerves, blood vessels and bone. Now add to this list a spine that may not have optimal alignment, optimal curvature, or may have some other pre-existing abnormality or health condition. Perhaps this may not be the first such accident an individual has been involved in. ACEing Autism Serves Up Life and Tennis Skills BY STACEY BOMSER
A
ndrew Grub has always loved playing tennis. He also enjoyed the time he spent helping his mother, a pediatric speech-language pathologist, during therapy sessions and summer programs for children with autism. So, when it came time to choosing a Bar Mitzvah project three years ago, Andrew decided to combine his interests and start an ACEing Autism program at Midtown Athletic Club. The Cypress Bay freshman has been serving as Program Director ever since. ACEing Autism is a national volunteerdriven, nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect children with autism with unique tennis programs. According to Andrew, ACEing Autism Weston runs adaptive tennis clinics for children who have autism and related disorders. “The clinics aim to develop children’s motor skills, hand-eye coordination, build confidence and improve their general socialization with their
peers, all within a fun, controlled environment,” states Andrew. The curriculum, which was created by some of the top researchers in the field, is tailored specifically to the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) population. “The clinics are structured so that children with a diverse range of abilities can be accommodated, as each child receives customized support from a trained volunteer based on his or her unique needs,” explains Andrew. For example, the children strengthen their hand-eye coordination with drills such as bounc-

ing, throwing and catching a ball with a partner. Andrew says this also teaches them how to take turns and work together. In addition, the players are taught tennis skills such as how to hit groundstrokes and volleys on the tennis court. “The children derive many benefits from the program including learning how to socialize with their peers through playing games, development of motor skills and an increase in confidence as they see their skills improve,” shares Andrew. Andrew has also benefitted from running the ACEing Autism Weston program by building self-confidence and developing leadership skills. At school, Andrew is an ambassador for the HAAPE (Helping Adults with Autism Perform and Excel) Club and he serves on the School Advisory Council. Outside of school, Andrew is active in local politics. He is the student volunteer coordinator to a candidate running for Weston City Commission in 2020 and serves as a student volunteer for his Homeowners Association. n ACEing Autism Weston runs two six-week sessions each year, typically in the fall and spring. Aspiring Fashion Designer Promotes Environmental Awareness BY STACEY BOMSER
D
uring an episode of Project Runway this season, the designers were challenged to create garments using unconventional materials such as rope, maps and sleeping bags. That would be no challenge for Maegan Osmond, an aspiring fashion designer from Weston who uses recycled materials to create her unique looks. The homeschooled eleventh grader says she has always been fascinated by art and design. That led her to volunteer at Young At Art Museum, which hosts an annual Recycled Fashion Show to raise money for charity. Seventy-five percent of the garment is to be made from recycled materials. Maegan competed in her first Recycled Fashion Show in 2017. “I found it a great challenge to use my art skills in a new platform for charity and to raise awareness about environmental issues,” shares Maegan. “I have created garments out of plastic bags and chip bags already and plan to create two more recycled dresses
out of playing cards and bottle caps before the year ends.” She says she is not surprised that designing dresses using recycled materials quickly became a personal passion. “It combines so many of my interests into one project – environmental awareness, art, design, and a new challenge to rise to.” Maegan, who has taken only a basic sewing
machine class, is pretty much self-taught. One of her most recent projects was a wedding dress which featured colorful flowers on the train made from recycled dryer sheets. Deputy Kari Pallotto modeled the dress while walking the red carpet during the Broward Sheriff’s Office Patrol Stroll. “It is so heartwarming to see anyone wear one of my designs and have fun in it,” shares Maegan. “Seeing Deputy Pallotto feeling confident in my dress while having a great time, creating memories, was just amazing.” In addition to fashion design, Maegan is a competitive softball player. She plays on the Cypress Bay High School team, as well as a travel team during the summer and fall. Although she intends to pursue business and economics in college, Maegan will continue to further her art and design skills. “I hope one day to create a fashion line specifically catered towards size four to twelve as the body inclusiveness in fashion is steadily improving, but it is still very refined to a few body types which I believe should change.” Maegan encourages other students to pursue their passions and do what inspires them. “Remember that no one can define you but you.”

“I like being able to go to and help out at the fun events around town,” notes Alli. “Meeting new people is fun too.” Serving as Little Miss Weston has also allowed Alli to expand a community service project she started called Hand 2 Paw Happiness. “I try to bring together kids that need to smile and rescue animals so they can comfort each other. I put the program together, with help from my mom, to help kids like me. I did it in honor of my dad who was killed in the line of duty last year.” (Her father was one of two Palm Beach County paramedics killed in an ambulance crash last year.) When not serving as Little Miss Weston, Alli enjoys gymnastics and ballet, playing tennis, drawing, and playing the electric guitar. Inspiring Year for Rotary Club of Weston BY FRANK WALKER, ROTARY CLUB OF WESTON PRESIDENT
A
s President of the Rotary Club of Weston for the year 2018-2019 I would like to personally thank the Weston Community for the wonderful response and support you have given our organization. My Rotary year ends on June 30th. This has been an experience I will not soon forget. We have accomplished a number of record setting feats with your help. Early in the year, we packed and shipped 10,000 meals that were shipped to the Columbian – Venezuelan border and fed thousands of refugees fleeing their country for a better life. We fed the hungry at LifeNet 4 families, a homeless shelter. We built a new relationship with the Jubilee Center, another homeless shelter that feeds hundreds of people each week. We supported them with monitory gifts and labor. We filled a large truck with food and hurricane supplies donated by many Weston residents and drove it to Panama City, Florida. We fed and
supplied household necessities to hundreds of misplaced residents in that area due to Hurricane Michael. We collected and sent bikes to Africa for necessary transportation.
Back on the Weston front, we hosted the 21st annual Rotary Club of Weston’s Run for Tomorrow with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital as the Title Sponsor. We raised over $90,000 to support local charities in the Weston area and beyond. This year’s Run proceeds set a new record, with Robin Lewis as Run Chairperson. This also allowed us to contribute to the Rotary Foundation, where we’re able to multiply dollars and send them all over the world to feed the hungry and fund vaccinations for Polio and supply clean water. We also hosted a foreign exchange student this year, Solenne Bousmar, from Belgium. In the month of April, we hosted the Rotary
Club of Weston’s Annual Golf Tournament with title sponsor FHV Weston Lawyers. This event raised over $100,000 for scholarships to students from Cypress Bay, Western, Sagemont and HANDY. These funds give deserving students a chance to attend college that in many cases would otherwise be financially impossible. This effort could not have been accomplished without the devotion of Mary Beth Casey, Andy Suarez and Michael Freedland. I’ve mentioned a few of the many accomplishments of the 130 members of the Rotary Club of Weston. I am so very proud to have served alongside some of the most giving souls on earth. I am also so grateful to Mayor Dan Stermer and all the City officials, Fire and Sheriff’s personnel for the many hours of effort that they put in to make our events a success. Our theme this year was “Be the Inspiration”. Divorce Has Become A Generational Issue BY EVAN BARON previously wrote an article discussing the rise in “grey divorces”, which are divorces for people in their 50’ and older. Statistics have shown that from 1990 to 2015 divorce rates had doubled for people 55 to 64 and had tripled for individuals 65 and older. There are many theories as to why this increase occurred for this age group. “Baby Boomers” tended to marry at a young age and upon becoming empty nesters, realized they were no longer compatible with their spouses. Women in the work force now had the financial freedom to move on with their lives, without having to necessarily depend upon their spouse to support them. People were now living longer and so a long-term marriage took on a different meaning. However, the exact opposite is happening with Generation X and Millennials. The overall divorce rate has fallen 18 percent from 2008 to 2016. There are several theories as to why this is happening. Couples are now getting married at an older age, after they have established their careers. The cost of obtaining a college or post graduate degree also has had an impact. Two individuals with large college loans to pay back are less likely to “tie the knot” until they are earning a salary sufficient to pay their loans and start a family. Most couples in that age group that I know have decided to live together before they make their marriage commitment. Marriages later in life, has proven to result in fewer divorces.

How To Practice Your Short Game BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL ometimes, golfers have to rely on a strong wedge play game to get out of tough obstacles or drive the ball those last few yards to the green. If you’re unsure of your chipping or pitching, or you struggle on bunker shots around the hole, the tips below can help you to improve your wedge game and ultimately reduce the number of strokes for each hole. Most golfers don’t get a lot of experience before they’re already playing their first round of golf with getting balls out of tricky bunkers and onto the green. These bunker shots require your short clubs, called wedges, to lift the ball out of the sand trap and back up onto the playing green toward the hole. Similarly, players who find themselves in the rough grass just outside the putting green might have to chip or pitch their ball over the last few yards with a wedge in order to maintain control and guide the ball closer to the hole. Bunker Shots When a player gets caught in a sand bunker or green side bunkers, the best option to get them closer to or in the hole is to utilize a wedge club to knock the ball firmly but gently enough to get it up and out of the pit and onto the playing field without going too far past the target. Perhaps the most important element of sharpening a player’s technique when it comes to bunker shots is to assess and understand the point of entry drill for sand shots as well as adjusting to different sand conditions. Depending on the depth of the ball in the deep rough, the thickness and wetness of the sand, and the distance to a hole, a player will have to reassess the angle of attack to the ball required to gently drive the ball out of the bunker. It’s important, too, for golfers to remember to not hit the ball too high or even too low as either will result in catastrophe — if he/she hits it too high, the ball will just drive further down into the sand trap, while if he/she hits it too low, it might “scull” it far past the intended target (the pin) or even directly up in the air. Chipping and Pitching Over Obstacles Sometimes it may be required that a golfer hit a lob shot, also known as a flop shot, to lob the ball over a particularly rough patch before the putting green. Many players try to imagine targets in front of them such as water or a bunker to carry the ball over and then try to identify strengths and weaknesses around the putting green in order to better and more rapidly improve their games. Shortening a player’s backswing and accelerating the club may also improve chipping as hitting the ball down will pop it up quickly before driving it directly toward the hole along the surface of the putting green. Similarly, practicing these shots can also help to improve chipping. It’s important for players to remember that a good and successful chip drill requires that players keep the club moving through impact in order to provide a full chip with the most control, and players should favor chipping over pitching when possible.

The Value of Fat in Cosmetic Surgery BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants, is not applicable because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than

For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its longterm effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. Heartworm Protection for Dogs BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM
H
eartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition that affects dogs, cats, and up to 30 other species of mammals. It is caused by parasitic worms (heartworms) living in the major vessels of the lungs and, occasionally, in the heart. The scientific name for the heartworm parasite is Dirofilaria immitis. Although heartworm disease is virtually 100% preventable, many dogs are diagnosed with it each year. Heartworm disease has been diagnosed in all 50 states. The American Heartworm Society (AHS) estimates that one million dogs in the United States are infected with the disease today, and this number may be rising. What Is ProHeart 6? ProHeart 6 is an injectable medication that is used in dogs six months of age or older to prevent heartworm disease. Your veterinarian will administer ProHeart 6 as a single injection under your dog’s skin. Once the drug is given, it continuously prevents heartworm disease for six months. Using ProHeart 6 means that you don’t need to remember to administer a monthly oral or topical heartworm preventive medication to your dog. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. To properly protect your dog, ProHeart 6 should be administered within one month before mosquitoes appear where you live. If you are switching from another heartworm preventive medication, ProHeart 6 should be administered within one month after the last dose of the other product. This will help ensure that your dog is continuously protected. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, ProHeart 6 treats hookworm
infections. Hookworms are parasites that can live in the intestines of dogs. These parasites attach to the inner lining of the intestines and drink blood. Hookworm infections can cause severe diarrhea, blood loss, and weight loss. In young puppies, severe hookworm infections can even be fatal. Hookworms can also infect humans, so treating infected dogs also helps to protect other family members. Important Safety Information Before initiating heartworm prevention with ProHeart 6, your veterinarian may recommend a full physical examination for your dog. Some diagnostic testing may also be recommended, including a heartworm test. Any dog that tests positive for heartworm disease should be treated before receiving ProHeart 6. Your veterinarian will likely review your dog’s medical history before administering ProHeart 6. Be sure to discuss any of your dog’s previous illnesses or medical problems with your veterinarian. ProHeart 6 should not be used in sick, debilitated, or underweight dogs or in dogs with a history of weight loss. It should be used with caution in dogs with a history of allergies, such as food allergy, flea allergy dermatitis, or allergic reactions to vaccines.
