Don’t Let Rain Dampen Summer Fun!
S
ummer in South Florida means heat, humidity and lots of rain. According to USClimateData.com, average rainfall in Broward County almost triples during the summer months. In fact, we average almost nine inches of rain each month. Lucky for us, there are plenty of things to do when Mother Nature does not cooperate. There are museums and art galleries for every interest, from paintings by talented local artists at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines to the dynamic and bright CultureScapes at Young At Art Museum in Davie. Children universally love Fort Lauderdale’s hands-on Museum of Discovery and Science, while adults may prefer the Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection, which offers “the largest eclectic transportation collection” in the world, or the Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum, which provides a look back in automotive time. Rainy days are the perfect time to explore new interests. Try a yoga or spin class, jump around at an indoor trampoline park, or learn how to blow glass at Hollywood Hot Glass on Young Circle. The possibilities are endless. So, next time the weather puts a damper on your outdoor plans, explore all the fun and interesting indoor options available to us. Sincerely, &

Calling All Photographers – Arts Council Sponsors Summer Photo Contest BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he Arts Council of Greater Weston is sponsoring its second annual Summer Instagram Photo Contest. It’s open to amateur photographers ages 13 and up. “Last year’s entries highlighted the beauty and nature of Weston with some amazing images,” states Arts Council President Jami Nix Rahn. “This year we are challenging photographers to take it a step further and get a different perspective of their favorite subjects.” The contest theme is “Perspectives” and participants are invited to submit an original photograph, in black and white or color, illustrating an interesting perspective or angle of a place, building or thing. Pictures may be taken in the greater Weston area or during the photographer’s travels. “One of the most interesting things about photography is how the same object can be seen in different ways, depending on the photographer, the camera, the lens, the time of day and the lighting, and any enhancements,” shares Arts Council Board Member Carol Lema. “Our Perspectives contest gives local amateur photographers a chance to show how architecture, places or things speak to them.” Fellow Board Member Joy Rodenberg looks forward to seeing how people interpret the theme. “It is our hope that photographers will approach this in their own creative ways, taking everyday objects or places and turning them into art. We may have the next Ansel Adams or Annie Leibovitz among us.”

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 7/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. City Launches New Twitter Account To Keep Residents #WestonReady COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
A
t the start of hurricane season, the City of Weston launched a new social media campaign, #WestonReady. It details how to be ready for any emergency, year-round. To relay information of an urgent matter or incident taking place, messages are conveyed through a new Twitter account, @WestonFLAlert. According to Denise Barrett-Miller, the City’s Director of Communications, the idea for @WestonFLAlert came from CBS4 Meteorologist Craig Setzer, who suggested an account just for emergency messages. “Mr. Setzer is a resident and follower of our Twitter account @CityofWeston and to ensure he was aware of any emergencies within the city, he set an audible alert for our account. Well, because Weston is active on Twitter and we provide a wealth of information about activities and programs in the city, the audible alert was always going off. @WestonFLAlert was created for notifications of an urgent nature or those that will impact persons, property or travel.” Barrett-Miller recommends residents follow both accounts, but set the audible alert feature on Twitter for the @WestonFLAlert account, as that information will be of an urgent nature. To date, the city has used @WestonFLAlert to put out notifications of accidents impacting traffic, storm alerts, fires or police activity in the area, and after June’s torrential rains to provide updates on flooding and steps and actions being taken within the city. Launching the Twitter account for emergency notifications is just one of the many ways the City of Weston has prepared for hurricane season. “The landscaping department trimmed and thinned trees to make them more wind tolerant. Public works prepped and tested generators to run traffic signals should power go
out. Police and fire prepped equipment for responses. The city also stocked supplies to feed and house emergency personnel, just as residents do,” explains Barrett-Miller. “As a storm approaches and people shutter up and go home, city staff go to work at our Category 5 storm tolerant Emergency Operations Center to ensure continuity of operations and readiness for emergency responses.” The City of Weston urges all residents to be prepared this hurricane season, promoting the first 72 is up to you. Barrett-Miller says the message is simple but essential. “Public safety services such as police and fire may not be able to reach you immediately after a serious crisis. Each person should be prepared to be self-sufficient – able to live without running water, electricity and telephones – for at least three days following a disaster. This means stocking the proper supplies of food, water, flashlights or lanterns, disposable items, medications, pet supplies, and an alternate cooking source.” To help residents prepare for hurricane season, each week the City of Weston provides tips in its weekly e-newsletter. Topics cover issues such as how to protect your home, insurance, documenting and securing valuables, pet safety, flooding, and driving safety. “All of this is to assist residents to safely survive a disaster and mitigate damage to their property,” adds Barrett-Miller. To make sure you are aware of any emergency situations in the city, follow @WestonFLAlert on Twitter for real-time emergency alerts and sign up for CodeRED, a high-speed emergency notification system. For more information on how to be #WestonReady go to www. WestonFL.org.

he City of Weston 2017-2018 Map & Guide is now available, both in print and online. Containing a detailed street map, comprehensive information guide and important contact numbers, it is a valuable resource for all Weston residents. “The Map & Guide provides residents with current information on their City Commission, departments and services, while containing an extremely useful city map. Even long-time residents are fans of the map,” states Director of Communications Denise Barrett-Miller, whose department compiles and produces the biannual publication. “While our smart phones and GPS are great, there is a huge benefit to being able to have a clear overview of the City and the association of one area to another. The map shows City facilities, parks, schools, hospitals, houses of worship and lodging which also makes it an excellent resource for visitors or those considering a move to Weston.” The Map & Guide puts everything you would ever want or need to know about living in Weston at your fingertips. It includes information on how residents can participate in our local government, including City Commission meetings and the names and contact information for the Mayor and City Commissioners. The Guide also features information about all City departments and services including Police and Fire, Public Works, Parks & Recreation, and Media Communications. With a quick check of the RainoutLine notification system, residents can get updated field status before leaving the house. “The RainoutLine is a great tool for our park users, particularly those involved in the various sports leagues,” states Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation. “RainoutLine embraces today’s technology to allow a user to choose how they want to get information about field closures. Better yet, that information is relayed immediately as soon as we make the decision, so residents are always up-to-date.” RainoutLine is easy to use and allows users to choose a preferred method of communication to receive alerts about field closures. The service is currently available for Weston Regional Park’s baseball/softball fields, soccer/flag football fields, and turf rinks; Tequesta Trace Park’s baseball, rugby/FUTSOC, and stadium fields as well as the new artificial turf fields; and Vista Park’s baseball and soccer fields. As soon as a decision is made by the Parks Department to close a park or particular field, RainoutLine instantly sends subscribers the cancellation information via their choice of communication tools. Weston residents have five options on how to find out if a particular park or field is open: ▸▸ Free Mobile App – download the RainoutLine app from the Apple App Store, Google Play, Amazon App Store, or Nook. ▸▸ Email – create a free login, then add your email address to the email alert list for real-time alerts ▸▸ Text Message – create a free login, then add your phone number to receive text message alerts ▸▸ Phone – call 754-227-8999 and follow the extension for the park and field that you are interested in ▸▸ Weston website – Visit the Park/Field Closures link under Events & Recreation on the City of Weston homepage (www.westonfl.org)

To protect park guests from the dangers that come with summer storms, the City of Weston employs the Thor Guard Lightning Prediction System in Weston Regional Park, Tequesta Trace Park and Vista Park. The system constantly monitors and evaluates the electrostatic levels in the atmosphere that could produce lightning and activates when ion levels are in a lightning producing range. If lightning is in the vicinity, the warning system will emit a loud horn blast, warning athletes and park visitors to clear the fields and seek shelter. The system also gives an “all-clear” notice, by emitting three short horn blasts, giving visitors the okay to resume their activities. Signs within the parks explain how the system works. In addition, strobe lights have been installed at the entrances to Regional Park, Tequesta Trace Park and Vista Park. A blinking light notifies park-goers that conditions are favorable for lightning in the vicinity.

Weston’s Drinking Water Meets All Safety Standards COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER

rink up! Weston’s drinking water meets all federal and state requirements, meaning it is perfectly safe for you and your family to consume. The findings are revealed in the City of Weston’s Water Quality Report 2016. “Our goal is and always has been to provide residents a safe and dependable drinking water supply,” said Karl Thompson, P.E., Weston’s Director of Public Works. “We are committed to ensuring the quality of your water.” Weston’s water is supplied by the City of Sunrise Utilities Department. It owns and maintains the water treatment plants and routinely monitors for contaminants in our drinking water according to federal and state laws. Our water supply comes from groundwater wells that draw from the Biscayne Aquifer. South Florida’s unique topography creates a highly effective purification system by filtering water through soil, sand, and rock. In addition, water is treated by state of the art membrane softening at the Sawgrass Water Treatment Plant. Chlorine and ammonia are added for disinfection, and fluoride is added for dental health purposes, within regulated limits. Although the Biscayne Aquifer is continually replenished by rainwater, it is not limitless. Water conservation is necessary and something everyone must practice. Here in South Florida, the average water usage is 140 gallons of water per person per day. There are some simple steps Weston homeowners can take to conserve water. By running the dishwasher or washing machine only when full, you can save up to 1,000 gallons of water per month. A leaky faucet can waste 100 gallons per day, so fix leaks quickly. When giving your pet fresh water, don’t empty the bowl down the drain, use it
to water your plants. The City of Weston is doing its part to conserve water. The city uses water from canals and lakes for irrigation, not potable water. Timers equipped with rain sensors ensure that each irrigation zone is only watered twice per week, during off-peak hours, when necessary. In addition, when planting the city uses native plants and xeriscape (landscape requiring little or no irrigation) materials, which require substantially less water than non-native plants. In addition to conservation, the city also promotes recycling. For every six water bottles used in the United States, only one is recycled. Because drinking water in Weston meets all federal and state drinking water standards, there is no reason to purchase bottled water except for hurricane supplies. City officials urge residents to take advantage of the weekly recycling service and recycle water bottles. While out and about in Weston’s active parks, utilize the recycling containers to dispose of water bottles, as well as sports drink containers and soda cans. For more information on Weston’s water quality, how it is treated and processed, conservation tips and landscape irrigation restrictions, as well as important contact information, download the City of Weston Water Quality Report 2016 at www.westonfl.org/ media/Weston2016_WaterQuality_Report.pdf.

Weston Goes Green – Hundreds Participate in Hazardous Waste Recycling Event COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
W
eston residents are going green and embracing recycling efforts. This includes the weekly curbside recycling, as well as the annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Electronics Recycling Collection events held at Weston’s Public Works Services Center. Hundreds of homeowners participated in the April event; an earlier collection was held in February. In total, 1276 residents participated in one of the two events, safely disposing of 87,621 pounds of Household Hazardous Waste. Between the two HHW collections in Weston, officials collected 37,980 pounds of latex paint, 2,464 pounds of lead acid batteries, 1,840 pounds of motor oil, 2,999 pounds of corrosive liquids and solids, 2,392 pounds of flammable liquids and solids, and 268
pounds of fire extinguishers. All items are reported in pounds, with liquids weighing approximately eight pounds per gallon. In addition, Weston residents had the opportunity to recycle electronics items at the collection events. This included computers, laptops, monitors, printers, cell phones, chargers, DVD and VCR players, copiers, and more. More than 33,000 pounds of electronics were collected between the two events. The Public Works Department was thrilled with the outcome, especially after last year’s record participation. In 2016, nearly 46 tons of toxic or hazardous materials were collected and disposed of properly at Weston’s two HHW recycling events. In addition, over 34,000 pounds of electronics were recycled last year. Household Hazardous Waste refers to used or leftover contents of consumer products that contain chemicals with one of the four characteristics: toxic, ignitable, corrosive, or reactive as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency. According to the EPA, the average household has as much as 100 pounds of HHW in the garage or storage. This includes items such as oil and latex paints and thinners, used motor oil, auto fluids and gasoline solvents, pesticides, fertilizers, drain cleaners, tires, mercury thermometers, and batteries including rechargeable and automobile. If you missed the collection events, don’t worry. Weston residents can drop off household hazardous
waste for safe disposal and electronics for recycling at any of the three Broward County permanent dropoff locations. The closest is the Central HHW DropOff Station at 5490 Reese Road in Davie. There are additional sites in West Park and Pompano Beach. All three are open on Saturdays from 8am-4pm. To participate you must bring proof of residency (photo ID and a document that shows your official address such as a tax bill, TRIM notice, voter registration, utility bill, or other official government-issued document). For more information on Broward County’s Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling programs visit www.broward.org/ WasteAndRecycling/WasteDisposal/ Pages/HouseholdHazardousWaste.aspx

Weston Turns Tree Trimmings Into Mulch BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he City of Weston is committed to conservation and recycling efforts. This includes converting tree trimmings into organic mulch to use in medians and along roadside berms throughout the City. Since the program began last year, 92% of the Weston’s green waste, or tree trimmings, have been chipped into mulch and put back into berms and garden beds around town. According to the City’s Landscape Department, this equates to eight dump truck loads (20 cubic yard capacity) of mulch spread out in City landscaping and only one dump truck of palm branches and other organic waste disposed of in landfills per week. The tree trimming recycling program is not only environmentally-friendly, it’s also better economically. It provides significant cost savings to the City because much Photos courtesy City of Weston. less organic waste is going to the dump, where it incurs disposal fees. By converting tree trimmings into mulch, 7,680 cubic yards of green waste are saved from landfills each year. The self-made organic mulch is chipped onsite and spread along berms under the ficus trees. As the trees are trimmed, the branches are chipped and the mulch

is put down in the same location. Some of the mulch is stored for use along roadways. Because almost all of the trimmings are chipped into mulch and remain in place, it saves the City money by not needing to purchase mulch. In the past, 75,000 bags of gold colored pine mulch were bought each year. Converting tree trimmings into mulch provides additional cost savings for the City of Weston because the process increases worker productivity. Landscape crews spend less time loading trucks and driving to and from dump sites to dispose of the trimmings. The organic mulch has numerous environmental benefits beyond recycling. According to Thad Bielicki, Weston’s Director of Landscaping, “Organic mulch suppresses weeds, requiring less spraying. It also improves water retention, which requires less irrigation and reduces compaction, allowing for optimum plant growth. The mulch turns into rich organic matter, feeding the plants and microorganisms living in the soil, requiring less fertilization.” As an added benefit, Bielicki notes, “The mulched areas also add an aesthetic appeal to our roadways and to the views of the back berms from homes.”

ummer is upon us, and with all the fun and carefree days that it can bring, in Florida it also marks the arrival of hurricane season. It’s been over a decade since a hurricane struck south Florida. We dodged the proverbial bullet last year when Hurricane Matthew, the first Category 5 storm to develop in the Atlantic since 2007, caused widespread devastation in the Western Atlantic before hugging the coastline of Florida, eventually making landfall in South Carolina. Hurricane Matthew caused one million Floridians to lose power and over 43 deaths were attributed to the storm in the U.S. alone. Around the country, you can view news footage of the devastation caused by floods or tornados. Disasters happen and you need to be as prepared as possible. We challenge our residents and businesses to be Weston Ready -- to take storm preparation as seriously as we do in city government. Hurricane preparedness is key and residents must remember the first 72 is up to you. This means you need supplies on-hand to be self-sufficient for your entire family for a minimum of three days. You can find preparedness checklists just about anywhere, including the City’s website. Pick up extra water, batteries and food goods each time you shop – don’t wait until a storm approaches. You can donate unused food items to the local Harvest Drive or food pantry in mid-November. It is essential to have a family and/or business communication plan in place PRIOR to an emergency. A great resource is www.Ready.gov. Your phone numbers should be registered with Weston’s CodeRED Emergency Notification System. This system is used strictly for emergency notifications and after-emergency information. Your contact information is confidential and cannot be shared. Sign up today by clicking on the CodeRED Enrollment link on the City’s homepage at WestonFl.org or call 954-385-2000 and a City staff member will register you. For those on social media, the City’s Twitter account, @CityofWeston, provides a wealth of city and hurricane preparedness information. New this year is @WestonFLAlert which is strictly for ‘notifications of an urgent nature or that will impact persons, property or travel’ and we encourage you to place an audible alert on this Twitter account. Speaking of social media, don’t use it to inadvertently advertise your outof-town plans. What we do recommend is to register for the BSO HomeWatch Program. They will send personnel by your home and perform perimeter checks. To register, call BSO Weston at 954-389-2010 or download the application on our website. Additional tips: ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home, suspend mail and newspaper delivery, have lights on in the house, and lock the door that enters your home from inside the garage. Summer weather also brings increased activities in and around water. Be sure to designate a “Water Watcher” to keep an eye on any children in the pool or other water body. Everyone should learn how to swim. Weston was awarded the Water Smart Weston designation by the Florida Department of Health for efforts in drowning prevention education, but education is an ongoing effort. All Broward County residents ages six months to four years qualify for a coupon of $40 toward swim lessons. Visit our website under Water/Pool Safety and click on the swim coupon. An additional lifesaving element: CPR. Weston BSO Fire Rescue offers free CPR training year-round, because anytime is the perfect time to learn to save a life. It’s summer, enjoy the slower pace and apply that to your driving speed as well. With schools in recess, more children are out and about in neighborhoods. Take extra precautions and watch for children, take your time and be safe. Be safe, be prepared… and have fun! Your City Commission will take a short recess and will be back in full swing with budget reviews and public meetings. The public hearing dates for the proposed Weston budgets are set for Wednesday, September 13th and Monday, September 25, 2017 at 7 PM at Weston City Hall. Please confirm dates/times at WestonFL.org/Events. We welcome your input. Mayor Stermer can be contacted via email at dstermer@ westonfl.org or at 954-385-2000.

LEGISLATIVE LOOK
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Be Weston Ready this Summer
T
he Florida House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed SB 436 along with the Senate, and it could be signed into law shortly. The big question is, can it pass Constitutional muster. I debated against the passage of this, and here is the back story. As a co-chair to this year’s legislative fellowship prayer group, you would think I would be a proponent of this bill to expand prayer in Florida’s public schools. It was couched in terms of a student’s freedom for religious expression, and promoted by Democrats in the House, who firmly believe that students did not have enough freedoms in expressing their religion. However, the bill is poorly worded, and may have consequences that those who voted for it did not understand. Once a bill becomes a priority of either the Senate President or the Speaker of the House, it is difficult to derail it. Along with Representative Geller, I did a lot of work this past session to have the bill re-worded so that it was more presentable, and would define a student’s right to religious expression without expanding school prayer. Unfortunately, this was overturned at the waning hours of Session by the House Speaker and Senate President.
Any time we change just one word or comma in a FL statute, this can have enormous consequences. One section of this bill states, “A school or district may not discriminate against a student, parent, or school personnel on the basis of a religious viewpoint or religious expression.” Another states, “A school district shall adopt a policy that establishes a limited public forum for student speakers at any school event at which a student is to speak publicly.” What this means is that teachers will have more flexibility in what they say about religion during instructional time, and that students could give a religious speech at graduation or during a pep rally. Currently, students can pray before or after instructional time outside of the class room, on the field before a ballgame, or in an afterschool club. The prayer cannot be initiated by parents or teachers, or be part of a forum such as a school assembly. This bill could change all or part of that. Unintended consequences could be a commencement speech by an atheist who could berate religion, and the audience would have to listen, or even Muslim prayers to an Islamophobic group. After bringing this up in debate, I was followed by another Representative who said I was speaking in hypotheticals, and that this was a good bill. If Governor Scott signs this, look forward to lawsuits and agitation by disgruntled parents at schools. This bill has much more in it than I have presented here, and I fear major unintended consequences. State Representative Richard Stark (D-Weston) represents House District 104 which includes all of Weston. You can reach Rep. Stark at Richard.Stark@myfloridahouse.gov or by calling his legislative office at 954-217-0287.

here is a new kid in town and he is called “Smart Home Staging”, the latest technology to help appeal to more buyers who are in the market to buy a home. Coldwell Banker has created the first ever “Smart Home Staging Kit” which is destined to be a key driver in the real estate market for the coming years. In the past, staging homes with new furniture and paint made houses more attractive to buyers. Today, a smart home has the added benefit of attracting more buyers. It can be enjoyed by the current homeowner and help their house stand out later when it comes time to sell. A recent survey conducted by Coldwell Banker found that roughly half of millennials and 42 percent of U.S. broadband households surveyed would “smart stage” their home to attract buyers. The survey also found that more than one-third of Americans (35 percent) now associate smart home technology with a move-in ready home – something that 71 percent of Americans would want if buying a house today. Having smart home technology in your home will enhance the value of your property, as well as help it stand out to today’s savvy consumers. This in turns helps it sell faster and for more money. According to Danny Hertzberg, of CB Miami, smart home staging is revolutionizing the traditional real estate practice. “Staging your home properly is key to generating buyer interest and getting the best-selling price. In today’s competitive marketplace, millennial buyers are especially attracted to homes that incorporate smart technology. That’s why Coldwell Banker teamed with some of the leading names in smart home to develop the Smart Home Staging Kit. This kit easily and inexpensively converts your home into a certified Smart Home, and it’s available exclusively from Coldwell Banker.”
What is the definition of a Smart Home?
The smart home relies first on internet connectivity. It includes the following items: security and/or temperature; lighting; safety; entertainment; appliances; heating and cooling; and outdoor. A home with all of these systems in place is considered fully integrated. The Nest Learning Thermostat has become one of the most popular smart home items, currently found in many of our homes today. The Nest is typically a first purchase for homeowners. The Nest learns your habits and will adjust the temperature in your home automatically, based on past behavior. It can be programmed from the comfort of your electronic device. Some other hits are the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, Nest Cam indoor security camera and, my favorite, the August Smart Lock. It’s like having a personal doorman. You can allow family and friends and workers to enter by opening the front door or garage via your cell phone. August Connect and Lutron Caséta wireless lighting starter kits are other popular smart home features. Rose Sklar of the Rose & Dean Sklar Real Estate Group is a Smart Home Certified agent. Every certified Smart Home on ColdwellBanker.com receives a special smart home icon, letting buyers easily search for homes that incorporate this technology. For more information, contact Rose Sklar at Coldwell Banker Weston, 2690 Weston Rd, Suite 101, 954-298-3626, or online at www.eastmeetwest.info.

s Floridians, we are blessed with many gorgeous sunny days and activities to choose from, but nothing goes better with the heat than the cool, refreshing feeling of swimming in the pool. There’s a lot of excitement and fun that pool activities can bring but, unfortunately, over 50% of emergency room pool-related visits result in further hospitalization. As you and your family enjoy some fun in the sun this summer, here are some pool safety tips to keep in mind:
Pool Rules
Always keep a watchful eye on children in the pool. Even children that can swim on their own can have accidents. Here are a few other basic tips: ▸▸ Never leave children unattended in or near water ▸▸ Have inexperienced or newer swimmers use some type of a life jacket ▸▸ Teach swimmers to keep away from pool drains ▸▸ I nstall proper barriers, covers and alarms ▸▸ Keep toys away from the pool ▸▸ No electrical appliances near the pool ▸▸ No running on the pool deck
Pool Fences
As you know, the majestic view of a pool draws us near, especially children. A great option to keep children safe is to install a pool fence. Make sure the fence is climb resistant and keep lawn furniture that can be used to climb away from the pool area. If possible, do not use a chain-link fence which is easy to climb.
Swim Lessons
The most important way to prevent accidental drowning is to teach children to swim. The American Academy of Pediatrics supports swimming lessons for most children, ages four and older. No matter what age you are, it really is never too late to learn.

JULY 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON
Florida is notorious for unpredictable weather. One moment it’s sunny, the next minute we could be seeing a sun shower. While enjoying the pool, be vigilant of our local weather conditions. Obviously, many of us can see stormy weather approaching, but our ability to predict what will come with the storm is out of our visual eye. Lucky for us, with technology today there are many apps that can be downloaded to your phone to alert you that a storm is on the way and whether you should seek shelter. Another way to stay protected from the weather is by using sunblock and covering up. There are many brands of sunscreen and SPF options to choose from. The higher the SPF, the stronger the protection will be. Beyond the use of sunscreen, another effective way to protect you and your family from unnecessary ultra violet rays are the use garments to cover the skin such as long sleeve shirts and hats. Some garments can even be purchased with a sun protector factor material as extra protection. It’s our duty as parents to protect our children, so teach them young about the importance of sun protection. By taking some of these safety precautions when using the pool, you can stay safe this summer. For more information, please contact Assistant District Fire Chief Jason Smith at Fire Station 81 at 954-389-2015 or by email at Jason_Smith@sheriff.org.

South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS
Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. Co-owner Bernard Hsiao, M.D., PhD answered some commonly asked questions about Nexus Shooting. What services/products do you offer? We offer gun and ammo sales, rentals, repairs, accessories, a 75 foot indoor range and training. What distinguishes Nexus from its competitors? Nexus is the only 5-star rated range in all of South Florida and is one of only 63 in the entire nation (out of an estimated 18,000 ranges) to have received this distinction. We received this award through our dedication to providing an unparalleled shooting and shopping experience as well as industry leading customer service. Nexus Shooting is an all-encompassing entertainment venue highlighted through the use of our revolutionary interactive live fire virtual range technology, the Nexus Lanes. Since the invention of the
firearm, we have been shooting the same way, making holes in non-moving paper targets. This is of limited value when trying to learn practical real world skills. It’s highly unlikely that an intruder in your home is going to stand there like that paper target. Our proprietary technology allows you to shoot your gun and real ammo at interactive video targets such as video scenarios, shooting galleries, moving targets, zombie games, skill drills, and more. Each shot is analyzed by a computer and provides instantaneous feedback to help you become a better shooter. The Nexus Lanes bring your shooting skills to the next level while making it fun and entertaining at the same time. We also have a traditional paper target range as well. How are the shooting ranges set up? With 40 lanes of shooting fun, Nexus has more capacity than any other range in the Southeast U.S. The ranges are subdivided into multiple rooms so that you can rent an entire room and have a completely private experience for your family, corporate event, parties, or just a group of friends. The ranges are 100 percent air conditioned and HEPA filtered with a million dollar military grade ventilation system allowing you to breathe easy and shoot in complete comfort no matter how hot and humid the Florida weather is outside. What is your showroom like? Our guests call our one-of-a-kind showroom the “Guggenheim Museum or Apple Store of gun stores” due to its spacious, clean and modern appearance showcasing hundreds of firearms. Who is your typical customer? We attract a high number of non-traditional customers who might otherwise be

intimidated to visit a gun store such as women, kids, tourists, and especially first time shooters. Novices are warmly received and are taken step by step through the entire process. What can one expect when speaking with your staff? Our staff is friendly, highly trained, and professional. They are experts at guiding our customers in renting and trying different firearms or purchasing one in our state- of- the- art showroom. Our certified instructors also provide basic and advanced training. Do you offer membership packages? If so, what does it include? Nexus has one of the best memberships in the industry, only $10 for a lifetime membership that comes with an abundance of amenities. This gives access to our range, creates a digital account to store one’s scores from the electronic Nexus Lanes, access to members only promotions and discounts such as our free classes for firearm law and youth safety, and tracks spending for reward points. What kind of licenses are available? We like to be flexible with the kind of practice our guests do. Rapid fire, holster draws, prone positioning and shooting on the move are all permitted. However, at the same time, we provide a safe, environment for all shooters by qualifying guests who wish to practice these skills through our multi-level licensing system to ensure they can do so proficiently and safely. There is a short qualification test for each of the three levels (Rapid Fire, Operator, and Elite) which is overseen by one of our NRA certified instructors. Once a guest reaches the Elite level, they are invited to participate in our Elite drill nights where we set up an entire obstacle course in our tactical bay and we practice room clearing, shooting on the move, and other tactical and competition based skills.
Do you rent firearms? Yes, we have a very extensive rental selection with almost 150 different firearms available. Choosing a firearm is a very personalized process and our rental program allows our guest to try out a variety to find the perfect one. We also rent a number of military, exotic, and even fully automatic firearms. What classes and training do you provide? Nexus provides classes and training for shooters at all levels. We have classes for concealed weapons permits, first time shooters, women and youth and basic firearm operation for all different gun types. Nexus also offers private lessons to custom tailor the training to the individual’s needs. All classes are taught by our highly experienced NRA certified instructors. Is it expensive to visit Nexus Shooting? You might think we are the most expensive shooting range in the world based on the high level of amenities and the first class environment we provide, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. All of our pricing is comparable to any local store and range. We understand that our guests work hard for their money, and we feel that Nexus provides a nicer environment and experience for the same price. Who wouldn’t want to drive a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota? That’s the value we provide.
Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm. For more information, please call 954-5878005; send an email to info@ nexusshooting.com or visit www.NexusShooting.com.

Cypress Bay Alumna Wins College Emmy BY STACEY BOMSER

She began reporting the morning news at Tequesta Trace Middle School, but got more serious about journalism at Cypress Bay where she was heavily involved in CBTV, serving as Executive Producer her senior year. “It was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” notes Erika. “I competed with my crew at numerous television competitions across the country and grew to love broadcast journalism and storytelling.” The storytelling is what she most enjoys about broadcast journalism. “As a journalist, I have the opportunity to show people amazing things and introduce them to incredible people, and as stressful as it is sometimes, the reward of seeing people react to my work is worth every minute.” Erika is excited about the new project she is starting this fall, in part because it has a hometown connection. “It’s about twin track athletes who go to UM, who are also from Weston! I am very excited to push the limits on this story. I think it will be very good.” As for her long-term plans, Erika says after she graduates from UM in 2019, she would like to work on investigative or human-interest stories, such as with CNN’s Great Big Story or ESPN’s E:60, or on longer-form pieces like documentaries. Her ultimate goal would be to work for CBS’ 60 Minutes.

mmy Award winning broadcast journalist Erika Orstad got her start here in Weston. Her documentary, Head Games, won a National Collegiate Emmy for Individual Achievement in Newscast. She is the first student from the University of Miami School of Communication to win this prestigious award from the Television Academy Foundation. Head Games was a three-part series Erika produced independently for her college TV station. It focused on a former Cypress Bay football player whose life-long dream of playing football for UM was shattered by a series of concussions, and a UM Health Network research program to better understand concussions and how they can be managed and prevented more effectively. Erika accepted her Emmy at the 38th College Television Awards in Los Angeles. The program recognized outstanding college student work in entertainment and news content production. Two-time Daytime Emmy winner and Co-Anchor Orstad won a of Entertainment Tonight Kevin Frazier presented Erika National Collegiate Emmy for Individual Erika with her award. Achievement in Newscast. “One piece of advice he gave me is that a career in journalism is a marathon, not a sprint, so take it slow as easy as it is to feel like you need to rush all the time, which I thought was helpful,” shares Erika. “I also was able to talk to some other journalists who watched my story, and they told me to just keep doing what I’m doing and to work on getting better every day.” Erika got her start as a broadcast journalist while attending school in Weston.

Make the Right Choice for Your Cosmetic Surgery BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS
To schedule your consultation with Dr. Messa, call 954-659-7760.
ASK THE EXPERT
P
rospective patients often ask, “Who should I go to for my cosmetic surgery procedure?” This question, if answered correctly, can make the difference between a beautiful result and a disastrous complication. All too often in South Florida, patients will choose their cosmetic surgeon based on price. This is the biggest mistake most people make. The first question a prospective patient should be asking is whether their doctor is board certified in Plastic Surgery. Many doctors are board certified, but don’t always state which field of medicine they are certified in. You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with well-documented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office, which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. (AAAASF) or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced board certified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, do not assume the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise. I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

Is There A More Serious Problem? BY JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE

f you are constantly tired, irritable, sleepy and barely getting by on multiple cups of caffeine a day, know that this is not the way life is supposed to be. In today’s hectic world, it seems normal to put sleep and rest time in the backburner while we are busy with “life.” But, guess what? “Life” cannot happen successfully if your body is unable to perform basic functions. If your lifestyle is plagued with stress and sleep deprivation, the time will come when you will feel it catching up with you. You might be there right now and not even know it! More and more Americans have reported feeling tired, even after enough sleep. What’s more alarming is that in spite of experiencing extreme fatigue day in and day out, some people can’t fall asleep or stay asleep for an adequate amount of time. If you’ve been experiencing these symptoms, you could be suffering from adrenal fatigue, a condition that can adversely affect your quality of life and cause other health issues. Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue include: ▸▸ Fatigue ▸▸ Fogginess ▸▸ Stress ▸▸ Salt Cravings
WOMEN, If You Suffer From: • Hot Flashes • Pre/Post Menopause • Excess Body Fat • Mood Swings/PMS • Bad Skin • Migraines • Anxiety and/or Depression • Osteoporosis

▸▸ Allergies ▸▸ Infections ▸▸ Low libido ▸▸ Circulatory issues ▸▸ Weight gain The adrenals are two small glands located right above the kidneys and are responsible for producing important hormones, such as cortisol, popularly known as the stress hormone. Long-term stress on the body can cause the adrenals to stop working properly. Because of the range and vagueness of symptoms, adrenal fatigue is rarely diagnosed by conventional medicine. Unlike traditional doctors, who have failed to recognize adrenal fatigue as a “real” medical condition, functional medicine doctors understand the importance of treating symptoms before an illness develops—addressing the root and cause of a problem is critical in keeping a healthy body. If you feel tired, are inexplicably gaining weight and suffering from lack of concentration, there is certainly a reason. At Bellissimo, we can help you find it. Treatment for adrenal fatigue depends on the individual and the severity of the condition. The first step is to test for it through saliva samples collected at four different times throughout the day. There are many supplements on the market to treat for adrenal fatigue that can do more harm than good if you don’t know where all four points of cortisol are at. The cortisol levels may be high and needing to be lowered, or they may be low and need to be picked up. Timing of when these dips occur can also impact treatment. The tricky part is that symptoms may be the same when high or low. Testing also needs to analyze DHEA (another important hormone) levels. Working with a qualified practitioner is the only way to ensure your diagnosis is accurate and your treatment effective. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Weston Teen Uses Power of Print to Promote Anti-Tobacco Message
CAN DO KIDS
BY STACEY BOMSER
Gavin Marzan won an anti-tobacco essay contest.
G
avin Marzan was concerned about the influence adult smokers have on teenagers, so he decided to do something about it. The Tequesta Trace Middle School eighth grader entered an essay contest sponsored by the Tobacco Free Partnership of Broward County and won – twice. The contest challenged teens and young adults to write an essay on anti-tobacco measures and have it published as a viewpoint or opinion piece on the op-ed page of a major daily Florida newspaper. Gavin had two articles published, so he won two $100 gift cards. The Tallahassee Democrat published Gavin’s article proposing measures to reduce teen access to tobacco and nicotine products by cracking down on gas stations and convenience stores that sell tobacco products, while his article in the Northwest Florida Daily News promoted the creation of tobacco prevention clubs and usage of social media to promote the cause. Gavin says he plans to create an anti-tobacco club when he starts Cypress Bay High School next fall. “I want to start a high school club to get the message out and to also get service hours which I will need and others will too. I welcome teens that are also interested in promoting the message of anti-smoking or never starting to smoke.” His article also suggested using social media, such as YouTube, Vine or iFunny, to reach teens
and promote the prevention of nicotine and cigarette usage. That idea was well received by the Tobacco Free Partnership of Broward County. In fact, Gavin says he was told his social media ideas would be shared with the national office to promote statewide. “I know teens use social media to promote messages and I thought this would inspire others to create ads about this message.” Gavin hopes his anti-tobacco messages reach teens so they never start smoking. “If you never start smoking, you never have to worry about quitting. I have an uncle, who is also my godfather, who smoked since he was a teen and he just quit, but now he vapes. Vaping is also addictive and I feel sorry for him because he has a young son. I really want him to stop because I would never want his son to see him get sick.” When not working to spread anti-tobacco messages to his peers, Gavin says he enjoys gaming, parkour and spending time with his family. “I am really interested in law enforcement too and try to always do the right thing no matter what I am doing.”
Weston Seventh Grader Succeeds on SAT BY STACEY BOMSER
R
ichard “Chase” Mooney is only in seventh grade but he has already scored higher on the SAT than most college-bound high school seniors. The St. Bonaventure Catholic School student was recently honored by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) during its Grand Recognition Ceremony. Duke TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search identifies students who have scored at or above the 95th percentile on a grade-level standardized test. As part of the program, these academically talented students take college-entrance exams to learn more about their abilities. The Grand Recognition Ceremony recognizes those students with the highest ACT or SAT scores. Chase was one of only 2,072 students nationwide invited to the Grand Recognition Ceremony. Chase scored 1250 out of 1600 (670 on Reading/ Writing and 580 on Math) on the January 21st, 2017, SAT exam. According to College Board, the national average score of high school juniors and seniors taking the exam is 1020 and the average score for college-bound students is 1083. “When I found out my score in relation to collegebound high school students, I felt both proud and confident in my abilities,” states Chase. “This is because while most high school students have years to learn the material on the SAT, I only had slightly more than a dozen classes with a tutor. So, realizing that I have four to five more years of learning ahead of me, I am

excited about my potential to score even higher come high school.” To prepare for the SAT, Chase and a few of his classmates received weekly tutoring sessions for three months. He acknowledges the most challenging part of taking the exam was that he had not been exposed to much of the material in the classroom. “The math section was particularly challenging, as almost everything was completely new to me.” Chase says attending the Grand Recognition Ceremony at Duke University was an incredible experience. “I could hardly believe that I was really there, surrounded by some of the smartest 7th graders in the country. It was amazing to know that I was actually part of that group. It made me so happy to know that I did well enough to be recognized on the national level.” The keynote address was given by Phail Wynn, Jr., PhD, Vice President of Regional Affairs for Duke University. “He spoke to us about maximizing our potential. He said that while all of us honorees have already displayed incredible talent by scoring so high on the SAT/ACT, it will take ongoing effort for us to fully maximize our potential,” shared Chase. This summer, Chase intends to take time off from academics and spend time riding his bike and hanging out with friends. As an 8th grader next year, he says his goal is to, once again, receive a Principal’s Honors award for maintaining an average of 95 or above in all his classes for the school year.
Chase Mooney was honored for his academic excellence at the Duke TIP Grand Recognition Ceremony.

Building a Strong Foundation BY SHEILA WOLDENBERG
B
efore construction begins on a house an architect creates a plan. Once the plans are approved the builder starts construction by building a strong foundation. Constructing a sound foundation allows the builder to build up, adding additional levels. Brains, like houses, are built from the ground up, according to The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. Your genes provide the “basic blueprint” for your child’s brain architecture, but it is their early experiences that construct that into the foundation for all future learning. The human brain develops most rapidly between birth and age five, so it is critically important that we encourage and enhance that process. That is the purpose of preschool: to develop a strong foundation for your child’s future education. Preschoolers develop at their own individual rates and may differ greatly from any of their classmates, but they have common needs in order to maximize learning. Children learn best when they feel valued and appreciated by their teachers, and important to their friends.

Teachers will tell you that in a single classroom of four 12- to 24-month-old children they may need to use four unique methods of encouraging learning. That is one of the very important reasons why low teacher to student ratios is imperative. Teachers can freeze their current lesson plan and provide individual attention if the class size is small enough. If, for example, your child’s handwriting is a challenge, her teacher can spend more time with her in that learning center. Small class sizes also enhance your child’s ability to learn on their own. Preschoolers perform original experiments in physics on a daily basis. Their teacher’s guidance and attention is very important, but they need unstructured time as well. “Children have to be educated, but they also have to be left to educate themselves,” Ernest Dimnet, author of The Art of Thinking, wrote in the nineteenth century. Classrooms with too many children are stressful for both the teacher and the child. Overpopulated classrooms lead to social issues like aggressive behavior. Conflicts with sharing, which is a learned behavior, may manifest in biting or pushing. Preschoolers are overly distracted by the behavior of their peers when the classroom size is too large. The teacher’s lesson plan may take a backseat to solving behavioral issues. When choosing a preschool, look for one that builds educational foundations one child at a time. Sheila Woldenberg is the Director of Temple Dor Dorim’s Early Childhood Center. It has earned and maintained the highest form of accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is currently the only preschool in Weston honored with that designation. Manatee Bay Elementary Claims Fifth First In Math Title BY STACEY BOMSER

Samuel Allison’s fifth grade class was ranked the #2 First In Math team in the country.
M
Manatee Bay Elementary’s Top Ten First In Math players pose with Principal DeVaughn, Vice Principal Dumervil, Mayor Daniel Stermer, School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson, and representatives from Broward Public Schools.
anatee Bay Elementary School retained bragging rights as the number one school in the nation in the First In Math competition. For the fifth consecutive year, its fifth-grade students beat out over 6,000 other schools by solving approximately nine million online math problems. In addition to being the top school, five of the Manatee Bay teams ranked in the Top Ten Teams nationwide. Samuel Allison’s class has the distinction of being the #2 team in the nation, Annejeanette Washington’s class was #4, Adriana Figone’s class was #6, Lisa Weingartner’s class was #8, and Garth Jones’ class was #10. Manatee Bay Principal Heather Hedman-DeVaughn is a strong proponent of the First In Math program and says she could not be more proud of her students. “My message to students was to see and feel the power of when individuals get together for a common purpose. They have proved that individually we can do great things, but collectively we can do even more! I am so proud of them and so fortunate to have teachers who lead and encourage this kind of life-changing success.”
First In Math is an online competition that challenges students to increase mental math skills while completing a variety of math problems. The program starts out very simple with basic facts, but as students work their way through the skill sets they encounter advanced skills such as decimals, fractions, variables, exponents, algebraic thinking, and measurement. Students earn virtual stickers as they work through the skill sets. As they complete different games they unlock additional games that increase in difficulty. In total, Manatee Bay fifth graders solved 8,791,446 math problems and earned 2,930,482 stickers. The Top Ten students each earned more than 25,000 stickers. Congratulations to Rajiv Jonnala (43,353 stickers); Rithvik Marri (43,189), David Xaio (37,155), Arvin Nafisi (34,774), Daniel Gominguez (34,069), Benjamin Barr-Beeza (29,039), Andrew Mahler (27,352), Manual Branco (27,001), Juan Pedro Ameijenda (25,836), and Constanza Hernandez (25,265).

ongratulations to the Cypress Bay DeBAYte Team on its outstanding performance at the National Tournament of Champions. Eight students won awards including one national championship. High school debate students work all year to qualify for the National Tournament of Champions, and only the top competitors are invited to compete. Cypress Bay had an impressive 17 students participate, competing against more than 1,000 students from over 40 states and four countries. Despite the tough competition, the Cypress Bay DeBAYte Team excelled. Senior Sterling Wertanzl was named National Champion in Oral Interpretation. “We could not be prouder of her accomplishments, and this first for Cypress DeBAYte,” shared Cypress Bay Director of Speech and DeBAYte Alyssa Fiebrantz. Seven other debaters ranked in the top 30 of their respective events. Brian Levy was 10th place in Extemporaneous Speaking. Daniel Gamboa was 13th place in Extemporaneous Speaking. Aetedal Odeh placed 17th in Oral Interpretation. Zachary Wurtenberger placed 18th in Humorous Interpretation. Hannah Gutner placed in the top 20 of Congressional Debate. Roberto Fernandez was 23rd speaker in Policy Debate, and his partner Reilly Markowitz was 26th speaker.

According to Ms. Fiebrantz, the Cypress Bay DeBAYte Team has seen record-breaking success this past year. It won the Florida State tournament, the University of Georgia tournament, placed second at the George Mason University invitational, won the Florida Blue Key tournament, along with numerous individual accolades. She is especially proud of the graduating seniors, many of whom plan to go on to compete in collegiate Speech and Debate. “All of our seniors competing next year have received partial or full scholarships based upon their success with Cypress DeBAYte,” boasts Ms. Fiebrantz. “Brian Levy and Aetedal Odeh will compete at George Mason University, Sterling Wertanzl at Hillsdale College, Roberto Fernandez at Wake Forest University and Reilly Markowitz at Indiana University.” Ms. Fiebrantz says she and the rest of the DeBayte Team coaching staff, Director of Individual Events Jonathon Martin, Nicole Arnold and Nick Montecalvo, were impressed by the hard work and dedication exhibited by the students this past year. The Cypress Bay DeBAYte Team’s 2017 season ended with the National Speech & Debate Tournament at the end of June.

Eagle Point Elementary Students Exemplify Leadership
SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents at Eagle Point Elementary School exemplify leadership skills on a daily basis. But once a year, on Leadership Day, they bring that to new level. This year’s program focused on community service. Leadership Day began three years ago as a culminating event to celebrate student success and highlight leadership habits. Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer was the guest speaker at this year’s program. In addition to speaking to students about the value of leadership, he issued a proclamation declaring the day Eagle Point Elementary School Leadership Day. In turn, the Eagle Point Student Council presented the mayor with the key to Eagle Point Elementary. The day also recognized students’ Leadership Day projects. Many classes teamed up for their community service projects. For example, several fifth-grade classes hosted bake sales and car washes to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Two third grade classes joined forces to benefit the Human Society of Broward County, with students decorating towels, making toys, and baking homemade treats for the animals. Other projects included donating books to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, making greeting cards for nursing home residents, writing letters to troops deployed in Afghanistan, and hand-decorating sneakers for children in need.
Students in Melanie Canto’s third grade class wrote letters of gratitude to Weston police and firefighters. She said, “One of my students shared that he enjoyed writing the thank you letter because an officer helped his family when they were involved in a car accident.” The message that leaders give back to the community was evident as students proudly shared their projects. All agreed Leadership Day was the ideal way to recognize students’ civic engagement. “I think getting children involved in community service as young as four-yearsold is vital to making the world a better place,” stated Guidance Counselor Ronnie Blake-Krupin. Pre-kindergarten teacher Shelley Auguste agreed. “The pre-K students were thrilled with the idea of helping others and were so proud that they had the power to do so. They can’t wait to do more!” As a Leader in Me school, Eagle Point follows a curriculum based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In doing so, Eagle Point has embedded a culture of leadership that supports the school’s mission to empower students to become leaders with a passion for lifelong learning.

Everglades Elementary School Dual Language First Graders Celebrate their Madres y Padres SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents in Everglades Elementary School’s dual language first grade program ended the year with a celebration of their parents. The children sang songs, recited poetry, and made gifts as a tribute to their mothers and fathers. This was the inaugural year for the dual language first grade program. It started last year with kindergarten and expanded this year to include first grade. Next year, Everglades Elementary will offer a dual language curriculum for students in kindergarten through second grade. “Students enrolled in our dual language program learn reading, writing, grammar, math, science and social studies in English and reading, writing, grammar and social studies in Spanish,” explains Nicole Ratmiroff, who teaches the dual language first grade program with Paige Argus. Mrs. Ratmiroff says in today’s competitive world, it’s important for children to know more than one language. “Bilingual children are better prepared to tackle the challenges that come with working in a multicultural world. It is especially important in South Florida for children to learn Spanish to be able to interact with the Spanish speaking public. Young children learn a new language with exposure and practice, which is what the program is striving to achieve.”
Although only two years old, she says Everglades Elementary School’s dual language program is proving to be a success. “The children are beginning to be able to speak Spanish. It’s a wonderful enrichment program that not only teaches children the Spanish culture and language, but it also challenges the students in the English language.” The parent show was a way for students to showcase what they’ve learned this past year. The children recited poetry in English and Spanish. They also sang three songs: All Mine, Happy Father’s Day, and Special Friend. To express their love for their parents, the children read the beloved children’s book I’ll Love You Forever. Each parent received a personal letter from their child written in both English and Spanish. The children also made gifts for their parents including flower pots and picture frames, as well as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards. Broward County Public Schools’ dual language program develops bilingual, biliterate, and multicultural competencies, so students become fully bilingual by learning in English and a targeted language. It is available at Everglades Elementary, as well as Country Isles, Eagle Point, Gator Run, Indian Trace, and Manatee Bay elementary schools here in Weston.

BY STACEY BOMSER

ou can help build a better world by reading and learning all summer long. The Weston Branch Library is participating in Broward County Library’s 2017 Summer Learning Program. It’s open to the entire family, preschool through adult, with programs, interactive games, prize drawings and much more. Each year, Broward County Library sponsors its Summer Learning Program to provide reading and learning services that prevent summer learning loss during the school vacation months. The program is open to all ages and everyone benefits from Build a Better World. As children track their reading and attend programs, they build skills that maintain or improve proficiency scores in reading, spelling, vocabulary, math and more. As adults read and enjoy the library programs, they not only have fun and build skills, but also model good learning behaviors to children in the community. The program is a blend of academic learning goals, enjoyable hands-on activities, science exploration, the arts, and just-for-fun events. Weston families can Build a Better World one smile at a time at the Bucky and Gigi Show on Saturday, August 5th from 11am-12pm. Two circus clowns will amaze and amuse, dazzle and delight with juggling, magic and lots of comedy. Super Zeus, their amazing circus dog, also joins the show. It’s a must see for all ages. Families will learn how to Build a Better Environment when veteran storyteller Mij Byram takes the audience on a journey into the imagination. This program is appropriate for all ages, with a caretaker. The storytelling sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, August 8th from 11am-12pm and Saturday, August 19th from 11am-12pm. All programs take place in the MultiPurpose Room at the Weston Branch Library. The Build a Better World summer learning program is free. You can register at
the Weston Branch Library or online at http://www.broward.org/Library/Summer/ Pages/register.aspx. It offers categories for all ages: Early Learner (birth to pre-K), Youth (kindergarten to 12-years-old); Teen (ages 13-17); and Adult (ages 18+). Each age category has specific goals based upon the number of books read or hours of reading. Participants win prizes by completing and tracking reading goals as well as attending Build a Better World programs. Youth earn Brag Tags (fun dog tags to wear on a chain) by meeting their reading goals. All participants can earn free new books and fun prize incentives. All participants who complete at least their first reading goal are eligible for grand prizes, which include Duplo sets, tablets, wireless headphones, or tickets to local museums and activities. The top readers could even win round-trip plane tickets. The Build a Better World Summer Learning Program is sponsored by Broward Reads (the Broward County campaign for grade-level reading initiative), Broward County Public Schools, Broward Public Library Foundation, and the Children’s Services Council. The Weston Branch Library will also take part in “Free Food and Fun at Your Library” this summer. The Summer BreakSpot program provides kids 18 and under a free lunch and/or an afternoon snack. It is served on a first come, first served basis; please contact the library for exact times. The program runs through August 19th. It is presented by Broward County Libraries in partnership with Broward Meals on Wheels and funded by the Florida Department of Agriculture. chool may be out for summer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn new skills. The Weston Community Center offers a wide variety of programs providing academic and athletic enrichment for both children and adults. Anglers of all ages will enjoy a Bass Fishing Workshop hosted by professional bass fisherman Ron Gallo. He will teach skills such as lure identification, tackle selection, knots, as well as general fishing techniques to help increase the number and size of bass you catch. The workshop is on Tuesday, July 11th from 6-8:30pm. At Buildbots Robotics, children can explore the magic of Lego® Robotics and apply that knowledge to design, build and program robots to solve amazing challenges. The program, for kids ages seven to 14, combines creativity, design, logic, teamwork, scalability, and problem solving skills. he 2017 Hurricane Season runs through November 30th and this is predicted to be a more active season than usual. Colorado State University expects 14 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes this season, while the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects 11 to 17 named storms this season, more than the 30-year average for the Atlantic Basin. Although there is no strong correlation between the number of storms or hurricanes and U.S. landfalls in any given season, NOAA research has found that the United States averages one to two hurricane landfalls each season. That means we need to be prepared. Here are some helpful tips on what you need to know to be prepared before, during and after a storm.
What to do now:
▸▸ Put together a disaster sup-
ply kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information. ▸▸ Make a family emergency communication plan. ▸▸ Register for text or email alert systems for emergency notifications. ▸▸ Hurricane winds can cause trees and branches to fall, so trim or remove damaged trees and limbs to keep you and your property safe. Proper tree pruning also increases the likelihood that a tree can weather a storm. ▸▸ Secure loose rain gutters and
downspouts and clear any clogged areas or debris to prevent water damage to your property.
What to do as the storm approaches: ▸▸ Secure your home by covering
all windows with hurricane shutters or plywood. ▸▸ Bring in all outdoor furniture, garbage cans, decorations,
and anything else that is not tied down and could become airborne. ▸▸ Charge your cell phone so you have a full battery in case you lose power. ▸▸ Withdraw cash from the bank. ATM’s will not work in a power outage. ▸▸ Gas up your car and buy extra gas if needed to fuel generators or gas-powered tools. ▸▸ Fill aluminum or plastic

containers with potable (drinking) water. Plan for one gallon per person per day. In addition, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with water for bathing and flushing toilets. ▸▸ Turn your refrigerator or freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary. If you lose power, food will last longer. Keep a thermometer in the refrigerator to be able to check the food temperature when the power is restored. ▸▸ Turn on your TV or radio, or check your city/county website, every 30 minutes to get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
What to do during the storm: ▸▸ Monitor your radio or television
for weather updates and instructions from public safety officials. ▸▸ Stay indoors, preferably in an interior room with no windows. ▸▸ Turn off electricity at the circuit breaker if you notice leaks in the roof or windows or if there is flooding. ▸▸ Use flashlights, not candles or kerosene lamps, as your light source. ▸▸ Avoid using the phone and do not bathe or shower during the storm. ▸▸ Do not go outside during the eye of the storm. The calm is brief. Hurricane-force winds will resume shortly.

Storm Surge – An abnormal rise in sea level accompanying a hurricane or other intense storm. Storm surge is often one of the most dangerous elements of a hurricane because the dome of water can be 20 feet high at the peak and stretch 50-100 miles wide.
What to do after the storm:
HURRICANE GUIDE
▸▸ Listen to local officials for
updates and instructions. Remain inside until authorities say it’s safe to go outside. ▸▸ Many disaster-related injuries occur in the aftermath of a hurricane. Watch out for debris and downed power lines. ▸▸ Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle away. In addition, flood water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines and may hide dangerous debris or places where the ground is washed away. ▸▸ Photograph the damage to your property to assist in filing an insurance claim. ▸▸ C heck-in with family and friends by texting or using social media to make sure everyone is safe.
WHAT’S IN YOUR KIT? It is essential that everyone have a well-stocked hurricane supply kit. It should contain enough supplies to sustain you and your family members for three to five days. Here is a basic list of what should be included in every emergency kit: ▸▸ Water -- at least one gallon per
person per day
▸▸ Non-perishable food ▸▸ Non-electric can opener ▸▸ F lashlight, battery-powered radio
and extra batteries
▸▸ Fully charged mobile phone with
charger
▸▸ P rescription medications, enough
for a month
▸▸ B aby care items including
formula, baby food, disposable diapers and wipes ▸▸ First-aid kit ▸▸ Personal hygiene items ▸▸ Household cleaning supplies ▸▸ Tools ▸▸ E xtra pair of glasses ▸▸ Pet care items, including food ▸▸ E xtra set of car keys ▸▸ C ash – ATM’s and credit card devices might not be working ▸▸ I mportant documents in a waterproof container including emergency contact numbers, insurance policies (auto, home, life, etc.), medical records, bank account numbers ▸▸ C harcoal or gas grill Paper goods and plastic eating utensils
WHERE DO I GO?
If you live in a coastal or low-lying area, you may need to evacuate to an emergency shelter if a hurricane is approaching. Emergency shelters

WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
Storm conditions can vary in intensity, size and direction of approach, so it is critical that you understand exactly what the forecasters and news reporters are saying and what it means to you and your family. Here is a list of common terminology as defined by the National Hurricane Center:
JULY 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON
Eye – The roughly circular area of comparatively light winds that encompasses the center of a severe tropical cyclone. The eye is either completely or partially surrounded by the eyewall cloud. Hurricane – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher. Hurricane Warning – An announcement that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected somewhere within the specified area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds. The warning can remain in effect when dangerously high water or a combination of dangerously high water and waves continue, even though winds may be less than hurricane force. Hurricane Watch – An announcement that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are possible within the specified area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the hurricane watch is issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds. Major Hurricane – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 111 mph or higher, corresponding to a Category 3, 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale – A 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane’s sustained wind speed. Hurricanes reaching Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage.
Tropical Storm – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. Those lists are now maintained and updated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). There are six lists that are used in rotation and recycled every six years, meaning this year’s list will be used again in 2023. The only time there is a change in a list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. If a name is retired, WMO selects a replacement. If more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur during one season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet.

This little gem of information sadly revealed how misunderstood posture is by many in the business of health care. So why should we concern ourselves with posture? Your head is a little off center...who cares? All these sophisticated medical tests show you are the epitome of health, right? Wrong! If you have postural faults, however minor, your health will be less than optimum. The greater the postural distortion, the less optimum will be your health. It is that simple. Scientific research has shown abnormal posture not only produces pain, but also causes: ▸▸ deterioration of the discs and vertebrae of the spine, and of ligaments, muscles and soft tissues of the central nervous system (CNS), ▸▸ some “organic” (internal system) disorders, ▸▸ abnormal motion, predisposing to muscle “pulls” and repetitive strain injuries, ▸▸ and reduction in quality of life.

Of these postural effects, the most important to overall health and wellbeing is the impact posture has on the central nervous system. Think for a moment: what does the CNS control? Science shows the CNS, which includes the brain and spinal cord, controls or regulates every component, every organ, and every tissue of the body. In fact, there is growing evidence the CNS directly impacts the immune system, thus affecting the body’s ability to fend off disease. It is no wonder, then, a study published in the Journal of Pain Management states, “Posture affects and moderates all human functions, both consciously and unconsciously, from breathing to hormone production to thinking”. For these explicit reasons, when a patient enters our office, we do not treat them as a symptom: a stiff neck, a sore back. We believe, as chiropractic doctors, our obligation to every patient is to provide them the opportunity to truly improve their level of health. Since posture is so profoundly important to health and to our ability to enjoy life, what is the most logical thing to do? Get checked! For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Rick Behar or Dr. Marc Browner at Windmill Health Center in Weston at 954-217-4881. They have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Contact the Weston location for more information.

ASK THE EXPERT
BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN
L
ike the answer to most questions medical, the answer is not so straightforward. There are many factors which go into the decision making process. These factors include maturity/anxiety of the child, type of sedation available and financial resources available to the family. In our experience, the consideration of each of these variables is of upmost importance in consistently making the right decision for the pediatric dental patient. The first step in the process is to gather all of the available information. This is accomplished by performing a complete assessment of the patient. The information gathered includes the obvious dental needs, diet, home care, age, emotional maturity, and dental anxiety. Most decisions regarding the treatment plan can be made at this stage. For example, a two year old who suffers from carious lesions (cavities) on all primary (baby) teeth would likely require a more comprehensive sedation in order to complete the entire dental treatment in a non-traumatic manner. A child at this age does not have the cognitive and emotional ability to complete the treatment without potential long-term negative effects. In other words, without the right approach, this child may become an adult with a longterm phobia of dentistry. On the other hand, a 16 year old who has been consistent with regular checkups and has already had dental treatment in the past would unlikely require sedation. Most other scenarios fall somewhere in between. Once the needs are established, the type of sedation would be considered. Types of sedation range from simple anxiolysis with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) administered in the dental office setting to general anesthesia done in a hospital setting. This is where the experience and intuition of the pediatric dentist is of most importance. Ideally, we would like to use the medication facilitating the completion of the treatment with the least sedative effect. Next month’s editorial will review the various types of dental sedations in more detail. It is at this point, that the parent/guardian must be informed and educated as to the process. For example, inhalation agents like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) completely exit the body prior to the end of a procedure. Other medications, depending on their route of administration, exit the body more slowly and prior arrangements should be made for an adult to sit with the child on the drive back home from the dental visit. Lastly, financials should be considered when making final decisions. Insurance breakdowns provided by the major insurance carriers are usually very specific as to what will be covered in most situations. However, if there is any ambiguity, an estimation of benefits (“EOB”) may be requested from the insurance company prior to the start of treatment. Finances may also direct treatment. For example, in a situation where there is a lot of dental work to be completed, doing so under a “deeper sedation” may seem more expensive because of the higher cost of administration. However, if there is a large amount of dental work needed, doing so under a “lighter” form of sedation may result in the need for multiple visits, possibly costing more in both time and money. Our advice is to focus on prevention. The sooner healthy habits are established, the less likely extensive treatment will be needed. Additionally, early exposure to the dental office (when dental work is not yet needed) decreases anxiety levels once dental treatment is necessary. There are also many benefits to the development of a relationship. The child is more comfortable and is more easily read by the doctor. Difficult conversations between parent and doctor are easily handled once there is trust. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

Would My Child Benefit From Sedation Dentistry? (Part One)
Lose Weight with Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine BY MONIQUE BAIN, L.AC, DIPL.AC
I
n 2030, approximately 42% of Americans will be considered obese. This is a scary prediction. It’s a staggering fact that today as many as a quarter of all Americans are overweight. In their struggle to lose excess pounds, Americans spend over 33 billion dollars every year on weight loss programs. Unfortunately, almost 95% fail in their attempt to lose the weight they need to maintain good health. Fortunately, Acupuncture can help you not only lose weight but maintain your health. In the May 2012 issue of Obesity Reviews, a team of researchers performed a detailed review of studies looking at Acupuncture and obesity. When compared to no treatment and pharmaceutical medications, the Acupuncture studies showed: greater weight loss, decreased BMI, decreased weight circumference. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles at specific body points that create a calming, relaxing effect, which counteracts the need for excessive eating caused by stress, frustration or anxiety. Acupuncture can power up weight control strategy by curbing appetite, quelling cravings, boosting metabolism, improving digestion, regulating obesity-related hormones and enhancing the way nutrients are used. Scientists have provided explanations on how Acupuncture promotes weight loss: ▸▸ Release of Endorphins: Acupuncture needles inserted in specific points on the body and in the ear will release endorphins which have a calming and relaxing effect. ▸▸ Increases metabolism: Auricular (ear) acupuncture temporarily increases basal metabolic rate and suppresses appetite due to the effects on the autonomic nervous system. ▸▸ Improves insulin resistance: Acupuncture alters activity of the sympathetic nervous system and possibly corrects the insulin signal defect. ▸▸ Decreases abdominal fat: An MRI study shows a decrease in abdominal fat storage after acupuncture treatments. ▸▸ Appetite suppression: Acupuncture influences the hypothalamus and obesity-related hormones to promote appetite suppression. There are many reasons people become overweight such as hormone imbalances, slowed metabolism, overeating, poor nutrition and lack of exercise. Using Acupuncture to tackle weight loss is a multi-pronged approach. In order for an Acupuncture physician to choose the correct points for you, you must first come in and on your first treatment we will discuss your particular pattern of overeating, digestive problems, hormonal issues or anything that has been causing you difficulties in losing weight. Every patient is different and understanding the main causes of the person’s excess weight is fundamental since it can be merely behavioral or it could be physiological. The number of Acupuncture treatments necessary depends on the patient’s goals for losing weight and the speed in which they want to lose it. A benefit of Acupuncture weight loss treatments is that unlike medications, there are no harmful side effects and no chance for addiction.
Tips for using Acupuncture for weight loss:
▸▸ Choose a qualified, licensed Acupuncture physician. ▸▸ Complete a full course of treatment and you should follow a comprehensive weight loss plan. Treatments are normally two to three times per week for four to six weeks depending on patient’s goals.

Developmental Flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern. Flatfeet are a genetic problem. Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. Congenital bone abnormalities as well as trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch can cause flattening of the arch and foot. A common cause of developmental flatfoot is tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity. Symptoms include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Leg pain, especially at night, and premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers, may be experienced. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. Occasionally, this is associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain. Signs include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. Knock-Knees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination when the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability. General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear, as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly, occurs due to the deformity Treatment begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy may be prescribed to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position may be recommended. In most cases, this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child. Prognosis is excellent, especially with timely management of the problem. Carlo A. Have A Special Occasion Coming Up? BY DR. TAMY FAIERMAN, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON
ASK THE EXPERT
Are you planning an upcoming family special occasion? More and more often now, women are taking the time to pre-prepare for their family’s special occasions in ways that go beyond the traditional planning in years past. If you are preparing to celebrate a coming-of-age ceremony for a child or a special occasion, then you know that preplanning for your big event is essential. Besides choosing the date and deciding on food, music and venue, attire, shoes and accessories, there is also personal planning that must be scheduled in order for you to radiate confidence and look your best while enjoying the big day with family and friends. The first step in achieving the best version of you is to evaluate what you want to work on. For many women, working out is part of the getting ready plan and some women may plan to spend more time than they typically do at the gym, add in a new trainer or visit a plastic surgeon for the first time. If there are physical areas that cannot be addressed with time at the gym, visiting a plastic surgeon may be helpful and productive. In this case, many women begin their party planning close to a year in

any golfers experience frustration because they can’t hit all their clubs consistently – particularly long irons and woods. As the club gets longer, the tendency is to swing at a faster pace than with middle and short irons. As a result, the optimum tempo and rhythm displayed with shorter clubs is compromised. The terms tempo, rhythm and timing are often used when describing a golf swing, but what are we really talking about? There is no question that all three are inherent parts of every golf swing. An understanding of how the concepts are related to golf – and how to discover your own perfect blend – will help you make the most of your golf swing.
The smiles tell the story. HIGHEST SALES PRICE AND LOWEST FEES Licensed Florida Realtor Since 1989 • Business Brokers of Florida Member Since 2008
Rhythm is a pattern of regular beats, and in golf it refers to a recurring pattern of even movements back and through. It measures how much time you take to move from address to the top of your back swing, from the top of your backswing to impact, and from impact to your finish. If you treat the golf swing like a simple pendulum, dividing it into equal beats or counts, the backswing would take two beats, and the downswing and forward swing combined would take two beats. Swing tempo varies from person to person, but rhythm is universal. Like tempo, rhythm is the same for every club and every swing.
Timing
Good timing in the golf swing is found when the proper sequence of motion produces correct body and club position at impact. Good timing is a product of consistently producing good rhythm and tempo. Many golfers swing with uneven rhythm – particularly with long irons and woods. The takeaway is often slow to the top, but there is a tendency to quickly lunge back down to the ball to generate maximum clubhead speed. If you employ proper rhythm, at a tempo appropriate to you, your swing should react like a pendulum – and that means maximum clubhead speed will naturally occur at impact.
Discovering the Optimum Balance
Some players, like Nick Price, have a relatively fast tempo compared to others, like Fred Couples. A golfer’s optimum tempo is often related to his or her personality. If you walk and talk fast, like Fuzzy Zoeller, your swing tempo should reflect this. On the other hand, if you are soft-spoken and have a slower gait, like Ernie Els, your swing should match. Try the following drill to help you discover your optimum tempo. Take three continuous practice swings using a 5-iron. Make the swings in a pendulum fashion, back and through while maintaining good balance. Then hit a ball and focus on repeating that same tempo and keeping a balanced finish. To help make your rhythm more consistent with every club, try counting out-loud while you make a full swing. Count “one-two” as you start your backswing and continue to the top, then “three-four” down and through to the finish – with “three” being at impact and “four” at your follow through. Remember, no matter what type of shot you’re hitting, tempo and rhythm should be the same. It is certainly true that in life and golf, timing is everything. Discover your own optimum tempo and rhythm by practicing the tips, especially out on the driving range or by yourself on the golf course. How Do We See Color? ASK THE EXPERT
BY DR. JANE THERRIEN
W
hat color is the sky? Most of us would say blue, but do we all see the same type of blue? Our color perception stems from our eyes and brain working together in order to perceive different properties of light. The natural and artificial lighting that illuminates our world makes it seem like one color, however it is actually a mix of colors that, when perceived by themselves, would span the visual spectrum from deep blue to deep red. This is seen through a rainbow, when the rain separates sunlight, or when a glass prism separates white light into a multi-color band. The wavelength is what determines the color of the light. The longer the wavelength, the redder, and the shorter the wavelength, the bluer the light is. Objects reflect some wavelengths of light and absorb others. The light that reflects is what we perceive as color. When we see a strawberry, for instance, it is seen as red because its surface only reflects off a longer wavelength and absorbs the others. When an object appears white, it reflects all the wavelengths. When an object appears as black, it
absorbs all the wavelengths. When light enters the eye, the light ray bends, and the lens then focuses the image onto the retina. The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye that contains millions of light-sensitive cells called photoreceptors. Some are shaped like rods, while others are shaped as cones. The eyes contain more rods than cones. Rods and cones both contain a photopigment molecule responsible for absorbing light. They undergo a chemical change that acts like an on-switch, which triggers electrical signals that are passed onto the retina to the visual parts of the brain. This is how the eyes interact with the brain to help us see. Rods and cones respond to light differently. Rods are mostly used for night vision, in which they respond
more to dim lighting and contain only one photopigment. Cones respond more to bright light and contain one of three different photopigments. Cones are more sensitive to long (red), medium (green), or short (blue) wavelengths of light. With these three photopigments, each is sensitive to a certain part of the visual spectrum, which gives us our rich color vision. Humans differentiate between other mammals in the sense that we have trichromatic vision, named after the three different types of photopigments our eyes contain. Most mammals only contain two photopigments. However, there are some other creatures, such as butterflies, that contain more than three. This means that they may be able to see colors that we can only imagine. Most humans share a similar color vision experience, in which we contain a full set of the three different cone photopigments. Because the human eye and brain translate light into color, each person sees colors differently. The differences are most likely very slim but the way you see blue, may be more blue than what your friend may see. For a consultation or more information, you can reach Dr. Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, 954-888-9393. Dr. Therrien and her staff look forward to exceeding your expectations.

f any of you have been involved in litigation, no matter the area of the law; you already know that it can be extremely costly. Unfortunately, that is just the reality of litigation. In most instances, the longer it takes to reach a final resolution, the more costly it will be. As they say, “time is money.” Now imagine that you also must pay the fees and costs for your opposition. You could be responsible for double the fees. You may ask, “How is this possible?” In most areas of the law, it is not possible. In family law, however, it is a very real possibility. Florida Statutes states: “The Court may from time to time, after considering the financial Resources of both parties, order a party to pay a reasonable amount for attorney’s fees, suit money, and the cost to the other party of maintaining or defending any proceeding under this chapter, including enforcement and modification proceedings and appeals”. This statute was created to insure that both parties could be represented by counsel, even if one of the parties does not have the financial ability to retain counsel on their own. The primary purpose was to protect “stay at home” wives who were not working outside of the home and may not have had the ability to retain an attorney to represent them in their divorce. This would “level the playing field” and allow representation for both parties. The determination of whether fees could be awarded is based upon the concept of need and ability. The receiving spouse must illustrate a need for these fees and the court must find an ability to pay by the spouse who is being asked to pay. Of course, the court cannot prevent the “paying spouse” form having funds to continue with his/her representation. Although I previously indicated that this law was originally passed to protect “stay at home” wives, things have changed in the work force. The law is gender neutral and as such a wife could be ordered to contribute to her Husband’s fees if in fact she is the one with the ability and he is the one with the need. I can tell you from experience that the payment of attorney’s fees is an area which causes the most obstacles to a settlement. In some instances, a Marital Settlement Agreement can have a “prevailing party” clause. This states that if there is a “post judgment” (divorce already finalized) issue which must be litigated (contempt or modification), the prevailing party is entitled to payment of fees by the other party. This is strictly based upon an agreement of the parties and need and ability is not the issue. If a motion is filed to enforce terms of an agreement, the party who is successful will be entitled to reasonable fees. One issue which is considered in either case is whether the requested fees are reasonable. No matter what the scenario, fees must be considered reasonable by the requesting party. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

PET OF THE MONTH
Spaying or Neutering Your Pet BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM
PET CARE
S
paying and neutering are surgical procedures used to remove the reproductive organs of dogs and cats. Spaying is the removal of the uterus and ovaries of a female dog or cat. Neutering is the removal of a male dog’s or cat’s testicles. These procedures are also sometimes referred to as “sterilizing” or “fixing” pets.
How It Works
Both of these procedures are performed by a veterinarian while the pet is under anesthesia. Spaying is generally a more involved procedure than neutering because the reproductive organs being removed are internal. Although all surgical procedures carry some risks, spaying and neutering are the most common surgeries performed in dogs and cats, and most pets handle the surgery very well. Be sure to follow instructions regarding withholding food and water before surgery. Your pet will need to stay at the hospital anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on his or her age, size, sex, and condition. Also, be careful to follow all recommendations for home care or aftercare, such as pain medications and appointments for suture removal. Pets can be spayed or neutered when they are as young as eight weeks of age, and many animal shelters follow this policy before releasing pets for adoption. Otherwise, the procedure is typically recommended for dogs and cats before they reach sexual maturity (at about five months old).
Benefits of Spaying and Neutering
One of the best reasons to spay or neuter your pet is to avoid adding to the problem of pet overpopulation. Every day in the United States, thousands more puppies and kittens are born than are human babies. The result is that there are not enough homes for all of these pets. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates that between six and eight million pets enter animal shelters each year. Of these pets, the HSUS believes that at least half — three to four million — are euthanized, or “put to sleep.” Many of these animals are young and healthy. Spaying and neutering also have immediate benefits for you and your pet: ▸▸ Your pet will be much less likely to get a number of serious health problems that can be life-threatening and expensive to treat, such as uterine, mammary (breast), or testicular cancer. ▸▸ Spayed and neutered pets are less likely to try to escape and roam. Roaming pets are far more likely to get into fights with other animals or to experience traumatic injuries, such as being hit by a car. ▸▸ Neutering male cats makes them less likely to mark their territory (your home) by spraying urine. ▸▸ Spaying female pets prevents them from coming into heat — that is, actively seeking a mate. Pets in heat may vocalize more and may leave bloodstains on carpets or furniture. A female dog or cat in heat may also attract unwanted male canine or feline visitors to your property. ▸▸ Spayed or neutered pets are generally more even tempered and less likely to show aggression with other animals or people.
Isn’t it expensive?
Spaying or neutering is a one-time investment in the health of your pet. This procedure is relatively inexpensive in light of the veterinary training and medications required for it. Compare the expense of this procedure to the expense of caring for a pregnant and nursing mother, raising a litter of puppies or kittens (including the necessary vaccinations and deworming medications), and feeding puppies or kittens until they are old enough to be placed in homes. Also consider that spayed and neutered pets are less likely to roam, suffer accidents, or develop certain serious diseases. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. Rotary: Making a Difference
ROTARY NEWS
BY BRAD E. COREN, ROTARY CLUB OF WESTON PRESIDENT
A
s the Rotary Club of Weston enters its 31st year as the premier community service organization in Broward County, we take time to reflect upon this year’s theme “Rotary: Making a Difference.” Each year, Rotary International selects a theme which best states what Rotary does worldwide. Ian Riseley, Rotary International President for the 2017-18 Rotary year, chose this theme to exemplify what Rotary has accomplished in the past, namely, and most recently, the eradication of polio in all but three countries worldwide and we know that the work we do will change people’s lives. However, the theme also is a bold shout out to the 1.2 million Rotarians in 35,000 clubs worldwide that our service to humanity never ends. It is an absolute honor and privilege to lead the Rotary Club of Weston in the coming Rotary year beginning on July 1. The Rotary Club of Weston is a large, diverse and ever evolving group of professionals that similarly believe the Rotary “Service Above Self” motto and in the power of helping those in need in our community and our world. Our club sets out to foster, encourage and facili-
smile
tate numerous meaningful and much needed community service projects throughout Weston, Broward County and across the globe. Locally, we will continue to work on initiatives, including but not limited to, Life Net 4 Families, The Harvest Drive, Hope Outreach and Susan B. Anthony Center for Recovery. Globally, in 2017, our club will focus on literacy projects in Panama and clean water projects in the Bahamas, Colombia and Guatemala. Of course, we will also continue our unyielding support of the Polio Plus Program to ensure that we have a polio free world by the end of 2018. All projects are funded from the proceeds of our major charity event, the Rotary Run for Tomorrow, which will occur on December 10th at Cypress Bay High School. Our club also remains steadfast in its commitment to develop the leaders of tomorrow. Our other major event is our 31st annual golf tournament which provides us with the funds to support college scholarships. Last month, our club awarded over 30 college scholarships to graduating seniors at Cypress Bay High School, Western High School, The Sagemont School and HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected and Disadvantaged Youth). These awards totaled well over $110,000 and best exemplify why we remain one of the premier scholarship programs in Broward
County, in conjunction with a strong community partnership with the Broward Education Foundation. With all said about our accolades above, I am most proud of the exemplary manner in which our members go about to achieve their service goals. Our members are warm, passionate, engaging and eager to share with new members their heart for Service Above Self and the family of Rotary. Come serve with us and make a real difference in 2017! The Rotary Club of Weston meets for breakfast on Thursday mornings at 7:30 am at Weston Hills Country Club. To learn more about the club, please contact bcoren@bradcorenlaw.com.
