There’s Much to Celebrate on July 4th
W
e celebrate the United States’ independence from England each year on July 4th. In 1776, the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, declaring the 13 colonies were no longer subject to British rule. While U.S. independence is clearly the most significant historical event on July 4th, interestingly, several other important events have taken place on this particular day. On July 4th, 1827, the State of New York abolished slavery. At one time, New York had the second largest slave population among the colonies. This legal act eventually led to the abolishment of slavery throughout the country and, in part, the Civil War. On July 4th, 1997, NASA’s Pathfinder landed on the surface of Mars. The landing and subsequent scientific mission were watched by people around the world, including by a young South African named Elon Musk and a Seattle book seller named Jeff Bezos. Those two would eventually go on to found SpaceX and Blue Origin, the world’s first privately funded space exploration companies, among other notable businesses. On July 4th, 1939, New York Yankees’ first baseman Lou Gehrig shocked the world by announcing his retirement from baseball and the fact that he was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Despite his horrible diagnosis, he captured the hearts of America by claiming that he was the “luckiest man on the face of the earth.” On July 4th, 1918, the Bolsheviks killed Russia’s Tsar and his family. In 1845, Henry David Thoreau moved into a log cabin at Walden pond. In 1803, Thomas Jefferson announced the signing of the Louisiana Purchase, the first step on America’s path to becoming a global Super-Power. And in 1976, Israeli commandos executed the most daring raid in military history, rescuing over 100 hostages in Entebbe, Uganda. Coincidentally, the United States is not the only nation to celebrate its independence on July 4th;so does the Philippines. This year, as you enjoy a traditional 4th of July barbecue followed by a patriotic fireworks show, think of all the other historical events that this day marks.

Simulated City Commission Meeting Concludes Weston University Program
W
eston University program students put their knowledge to the test by conducting a simulated City Commission meeting. It was the final project for the seven-month civics program which provides high school students with a hands-on education in local government. Each month, the program focuses on a different department or aspect of city services. In addition, students learn about the role of the City Commission which governs Weston. According to Denise BarrettMiller, Weston’s Director of Communications and Weston University Program coordinator, the City Commission simulation brings everything together as students present and/or defend their side of several real agenda issues, gaining a better understanding of each role of government. Elected officials and dedicated city staff members guided the students through the mock agenda which included items taken from actual City Commission meetings. For example, the students conducted a quasi-judicial hearing on resolutions to allow a 24-hour tanning salon to operate in Weston Commons and to extend liquor sales from
1am to 3am at a cigar bar in Weston Town Center. Other agenda items included passing resolutions to purchase five EMS Rescue/Transport vehicles and to renew the agreement between the City and the Arts Council of Greater Weston for an additional three years, as well as passing an ordinance to prohibit dance hall, night club and skating rink uses within industrial, office and commercial districts. Each student was assigned a role to play, ranging from Mayor and Commissioner to Director of Parks and Recreation and Budget Director. BarrettMiller says the City Commissioners and staff were thoroughly impressed by their student counterparts’ knowledge, interest and desire to role play. She says it is rewarding for the “teachers” to see how much the students absorbed from their lessons. “By participating in the Weston University program, everyone involved gains such satisfaction and reward by departing our knowledge and passion for government and exposing students to the various career opportunities in public service they might have otherwise overlooked,” states Barrett-Miller. The annual program, sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Weston, featured over 200 pieces of exceptional original artwork created by Weston’s most gifted young artists on display at the Weston Branch Library. Stop the Bleed Training Teaches Lifesaving Skills BY STACEY BOMSER

Now it is encouraging residents to learn how and when to use these emergency response kits. “Stop the Bleed participants learned what lifethreatening bleeding looks like and how to stop it,” explains Brocato. “They learned about the equipment and tools in the Bleeding Control Kit and participated in hands-on training for how and when to use tourniquets, as well as other methods to stop life-threatening bleeding.” Brocato says the feedback was very positive. “People felt comfortable that they know what to do and how to help someone suffering from life-threatening bleeding. They liked that they got hands-on practice with the tools in the Bleeding Control Kit that are placed throughout the city.” Weston BSO Fire Rescue plans to offer more Stop the Bleed trainings in the future, in addition to its ongoing CPR classes. id you know that uncontrolled bleeding is a major cause of preventable death? A person can bleed out in as little as two minutes, but it can take first responders over seven minutes to arrive. That’s why the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, in partnership with the City of Weston and Memorial Healthcare, offered free Stop the Bleed training classes on National Stop the Bleed Day – a one day call to action. Sixty-one people, of all ages, participated in the 45-minute class, which covered simple, lifesaving information. “The skills taught in this class will allow participants to provide assistance to themselves or others in the event of a life-threatening, blood-related emergency,” explains BSO Life Safety Educator Melanie Brocato. “This training can help save a life by offering immediate aid.” Brocato says it is important for members of the community to know how to stop life-threatening bleeding because a victim can die within minutes if nothing is done to stop the bleeding. “It is possible for a person with no advanced first aid knowledge to provide help or render aid, much like hands-only CPR, before first responders arrive. By learning the skills to stop life-threatening bleeding, people

f you suffer from diabetes, there is a probability that you may experience a sugar spike in the mornings in spite of not having eaten for a couple of hours. Scientists believe that because of hormones released during the night (growth hormones, cortisol, glucagon, epinephrine), your insulin resistance may be stronger, hence the elevated levels in blood sugar. A small spike in fasting glucose level is normal for most people, but if your numbers are too high or you are waking up with headaches or sweating, this could be an indication that something is wrong. Your blood glucose may be too low at night or you may be experiencing what is known as the dawn phenomenon—when the body increases sugar levels to make sure there is enough energy for the person to wake up in the morning. Weston Friends Club Marks 25th Anniversary Milestone BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he Weston Friends Club celebrated a major milestone this year – its 25th anniversary. While the club has certainly grown over the years, both in terms of membership and program offerings, much remains the same. Weston Friends Club is still all about making new and lasting friendships. The club started 25 years ago, when Weston was just a small town and residents were looking for a way to socialize and have fun. First Vice President – Media Relations Nancy Russo says Weston Friends Club was originally a newcomers club. “In 1994, Weston was still in its infancy with new residents constantly relocating here. Residents wanted to make new friends, engage in various activities as singles or couples, and Weston Newcomers filled those needs,” explains Russo. “Weston Friends Club continues to be somewhat of a newcomers club, but also draws members who have been long-time residents. Many new members join after retirement or becoming empty nesters.” Part of the appeal of the Weston Friends Club is the wide variety of activities it offers, with programs for all interests and hobbies. Russo says the club currently has four book clubs, five canasta groups, as well as bridge and mah-jongg groups. In addition, it

has programs for special interests such as Food and Fun, a foreign movie group, a monthly Lunch Bunch, and Lunch and a Movie. Weston Friends Club also arranges outings to museums and theaters, as well as hosts cocktail parties at members’ homes. This past year, the Weston Friends Club added two new programs which appeal to a wider audience. Russo says “Weston Guys Meet & Eat” is a men’s group that meets monthly for breakfast and conversation. It occasionally welcomes a guest speaker. “Our newest addition is a Travel Club, with vendors coming to speak to members about river cruises and other travel options,” notes Russo. “In the near future, the Travel Club hopes to plan a

group trip for its members.” The Weston Friends Club welcomes new members. Its annual dues are $40, which covers the cost of the membership directory and helps subsidize the club’s annual holiday luncheon and raffle prizes. Russo encourages members of the Weston community to join. City Reminds Residents to Recycle Right BY STACEY BOMSER

ach week, Weston homeowners fill their blue recycling carts with plastic water bottles, aluminum cans, newspapers and cardboard boxes. But did you know that many common household items – such as pizza boxes and take-out food containers – are not recyclable? Despite their best intentions, by putting these items in the cart, people are contaminating real recyclables and actually creating more landfill waste. The problem has become so prolific, many municipalities are no longer offering recycling programs. And for those that do, like Weston, not all of the recycling waste is actually being recycled because of the extensive contamination problem. A recent NBC6 investigation on the Recycling Crisis in South Florida found that, according to Waste Management, which runs the Pembroke Pines facility where Weston’s recyclables are taken, about 20 percent of the recycling that was picked up from Weston in February and March was not recycled because the materials were trash, wet or packed in plastic bags. “Many things that people think are getting recycled are not,” said Mayor Daniel Stermer, noting that the city is stepping up its education efforts.

Cardboard is also recyclable, both crushed boxes from tissues and food items, such as cereal and pasta, as well as flattened shipping boxes. Plastic containers with a neck narrower than the body, such as soda, milk and water bottles, as well as detergent and shampoo bottles can be recycled. Glass, aluminum, and tin food and beverage containers are acceptable, along with milk and juice cartons and drink boxes. What’s more important is what is not recyclable. Plastic bags, pizza boxes and Styrofoam or plastic food containers and trays should be thrown in the trash. However, stores like Publix often have recycling containers near the entrance to accept plastic bags and Styrofoam trays. Miscellaneous plastics and toys are not recyclable, nor are pots, pans, metal utensils and other scrap metal.
Recycling currently accounts for about 18 percent of the curbside waste in Weston. While the City would like to see that number increase, it is imperative that people recycle right. Weston offers single stream recycling, meaning all recyclables can be placed in the same cart. While there is no need to sort items, you must be sure you are only putting acceptable items in your cart – and all items must be empty, clean and dry. “We can mix materials; however, adding trash, plastic bags or even bagging up your recycled items can taint an entire batch of recycled materials, which are then disposed of as garbage,” explains Director of Public Works Reddy Chitepu, PE. “It’s important to take the time to review the items that

Community Cleans Up with Disposal Events

pring cleaning was a little bit easier this past season, with Weston residents taking advantage of two community clean-up days: a Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection event and the Broward Sheriff’s Office Shred-A-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet. Designed to help combat identity theft, the Shred-A-Thon allowed homeowners to safely dispose of documents with sensitive and private information such as check

stubs, credit card offers, receipts and other material containing personal data. Set-up like a drive thru, BSO officers and Citizens Observer Patrol volunteers, along with members of the BSO Explorers program, unloaded boxes of documents from residents’ cars for shredding. A few residents got a special surprise, with Mayor Daniel Stermer and Commissioner Byron Jaffe helping unload boxes. The event also included Operation Medicine Cabinet, which allowed residents to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medications, both prescription and over the counter. This program, with its no questions asked policy, is instrumental in keeping prescription drugs off the streets. Improper disposal can lead to an increase in prescription drug abuse and theft. In total, 338 vehicles participated in the BSO Shred-

A-Thon, dropping off 16.5 thousand pounds of documents for shredding. In addition, 7.2 pounds of controlled medications and 231.6 pounds of standard prescription drugs were collected for safe disposal. Weston residents also took advantage of the bi-annual Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection event that took place in April. It was a chance for homeowners to properly and safely dispose of hazardous materials and old or unwanted electronics items, ensuring the safety of our environment. Also set up like a drive-thru, Weston Public Works employees helped unload items such as paint cans, fire extinguishers, aerosol cans, and cleaning chemicals, as well as unwanted TV’s, computers, and even microwave ovens.

City Facilitates Proper Flag Disposal Service BY STACEY BOMSER

s we celebrate our nation’s independence this month, many families display their patriotic pride by flying the American flag. But what do you do with a flag that is worn, torn, soiled, or otherwise no longer fit to respectfully serve as a symbol of our country? While you cannot throw it out, an old flag can be retired and disposed of properly at the Weston Community Center. Director of Parks and Recreation Don Decker says the City of Weston started this flag disposal service last fall at the request of Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie, who co-founded the Veterans of Weston. “The Veterans of Weston wanted to ensure our Photo courtesy City of Weston flag was treated with the respect it deserves,” explains Commissioner MolinaMacfie. “Many have fought and died under our flag for the freedoms we all enjoy. We hang the American flag proudly and the thought of throwing in it in the garbage is disrespectful and unpatriotic. We feel it is worse to hang a tattered or damaged flag than to dispose of it properly, which is now easy in the City of Weston.” Sometime this month, a new outdoor flag disposal drop-off box will be placed outside the front entrance of the Weston Community Center. Currently, there is a box inside. Residents should respectfully fold the worn or damaged flag into triangles before placing it in the drop-off box. Any size cloth U.S. flag will be accepted. The flags are then turned over to a local Boy Scout troop for
proper retirement, which typically consists of a ceremonial burning. “Boy Scouts consider the burning of an old flag the most ceremonial and solemn way of retiring it. The worn flags are retired on a modest but blazing fire, so they are reduced to ashes, making them no longer recognizable,” states Decker. “This is in keeping with the U.S. Flag Code.” The U.S. Flag Code (4 USC Sec 8 Para (k) Amended 7 July 1976) dictates that a flag should be destroyed “when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display”. This includes the flag becoming tattered or overly worn or sun-bleached. The same section of the Flag Code states that the flag “should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning”.

Independence Day Safety BY DISTRICT CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN ach year on July 4th families and friends gather to celebrate our Independence Day, a festivity that goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. The history of the day culminates on July 2nd, 1776, when John Adams, Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson were given the charge to draft a document that in principle captured the words of Richard Henry Lee, “Let it be resolved: these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.” The Continental Congress voted in favor of independence; two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. In a letter written by John Adams to his wife he writes, “this day will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival” and that the celebration should include “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other”. As we honor those that have fought for our freedom and those that have given the ultimate sacrifice while we continue the celebration outlined by John Adams, the Broward Sheriff Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services - Weston District would like to share some safety thoughts. Before barbequing, remember to only use your grill outdoors and away from your house. Avoid being under the eaves of the roof or being near tree branches. Never leave your grill unattended and maintain a safe zone around where you are cooking, free from children and pets. The 4th of July also presents significant hazards that come with fireworks. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), ▸▸ Fireworks cause an estimated 18,500 reported fires in the U.S., including 1,400 house fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 17,000 outside and other fires. ▸▸ These fires resulted in an estimated 40 injuries and $43 million in direct property damage. Each year emergency rooms see an estimated 13,000 people for fireworksrelated injuries; 54% of those injuries were to the arms or legs and 36% were to the head. ▸▸ Sparklers alone accounted for more than 25% of the emergency room injuries. ▸▸ More than one-third of the people hurt by fireworks were under the age of 15; nine percent were under five. For this reason, and because more fires are reported on July 4th than on any other day, the NFPA along with the Broward Sheriff Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, urge people to enjoy fireworks at a professional display and avoid store-bought fireworks. Don’t forget about your furry friends. Animals have sensitive ears and can be extremely frightened or stressed on the Fourth of July. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they’ll run loose or get injured.

Weston Welcomes New Assistant District Fire Chief BY STACEY BOMSER here is a new addition to the BSO Fire Rescue command staff here in Weston. Bradley “Brad” Masters is the new Assistant District Chief. Although new to Weston and BSO, Chief Masters brings with him 22 years of service with the City of Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue. He has also served as an instructor at the Broward Fire Academy for over 14 years. In this new role, Chief Masters says he looks forward to serving the citizens, business owners and visitors to the City of Weston. “Service is at the heart of the Fire Service, and the value of serving others is something that has been taught to me from an early age.” He is also committed to education and will be working the with Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) as well as with Life Safety Educator Melanie Brocato to bring programs such as CPR and Stop the Bleed training to residents. “I have the deeply held belief that establishing and building a relationship between the Fire/Rescue personnel and the citizens that we serve will further the mission of the Fire Service, which is the provision of excellent service.” As Assistant District Chief, Chief Masters will oversee the CERT program as well as other tasks

With that comes the responsibility to our children to teach them how to swim to protect themselves. Until they can do that, we must be Water Watchers, always keeping an eye on children whenever they are in or near the water, regardless of how shallow or deep. Drowning is a preventable tragedy. Weston was awarded the Water Smart Weston designation by the Florida Department of Health for our efforts in drowning prevention education, but education is an ongoing effort. Flint has been the City of Weston’s one and only City Manager since its incorporation in 1996. John Flint has not only been a visionary, but vigilant about the processes, procedures, practices and implementation of infrastructure, facilities, landscaping and public structure that our City has come to be known for. John has certainly bucked the trend in City Manager average tenure. In the 1960’s the average was 3.5 years; the 70’s was 4.4 years; the 80’s: 5.4; and in 2000 it was 6.9 years. John has advised us that he wants to retire after 23 successful years at the helm. We don’t want him to leave but we wish him and his wife Sandi all the best in the next chapter of their lives and to get us there, John gave us plenty of notice. As a Commission body, we are doing a national search for our next manager. We are taking applications from within and afar. The process began in late January of this year and has brought us through this point of selecting a new manager. If you see Mr. Flint out in the City, please thank him for his service to our community. Weston would not be the premier place it is today without the insight, knowledge, leadership and vision of John Flint. How is dry eye syndrome treated? There are many treatments for dry eyes which vary depending on each patient’s individual needs. We begin with a complete dry eye evaluation in our office, to target the specific causes of the patient’s dry eyes. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can gently treat eyelid inflammation. For patients with a specific type of dry eye called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), the iLux will warm and compress glands in the eyelids. Another option is Scleral Lenses, which provide extra moisture and increase comfort to the ocular surface. You mentioned using RETeval to assess the eye health in pediatric patients. At what age should children have their first eye exam? At six months of age you
should take your baby for his/her first thorough eye exam, even if you do not notice any eye or vision problems. The things we test for are excessive or unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, eye movement ability, and eye health problems. It is important to identify children who have eye issues at this young age as vision development and eye health problems are easier to correct if treatment begins early. MC Real Estate Group Continues Charitable Commitment BY STACEY BOMSER

s a Realtor, it’s important to connect with the community you serve. That’s why each year, on RED Day, Keller Williams associates around the world put their real estate business on hold in order to “give where they live.” RED stands for Renew, Energize and Donate. Maria Corina Martinez, of the MC Real Estate Group, says this year KW Cares chose to honor Weston’s first responders with a picnic lunch. “The contribution our local law enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics give to our community on a daily basis is priceless. We considered that it was the least we could do for these dedicated community service providers. They absolutely deserve it.” Keller Williams Legacy invited members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Police and Fire Rescue to join them for lunch and an afternoon of pampering. “We welcomed them as our heroes,” states Martinez. “Our KW Realtors and staff cooked burgers, hotdogs, salads and more. As a special treat, we had a masseuse at the event, and they got 15-minute massages to relieve their stress. We also had raffle gift baskets for them. It was a special day and a well-deserved time for our distinguished guests.” Although the day was about giving, the Keller Williams associates gained much themselves. “RED Day is one of our team’s favorite events that provides us all the greatest satisfaction in knowing we are giving back to our community,” notes Martinez. In conjunction with RED
Day, Keller Williams Weston agents also launched a campaign to collect donations of baby care items, medicines, toiletries, food and clothing to send to Venezuela. Martinez says it is a cause that is near and dear to this community. “Our office has many Venezuelan agents and Weston has a significant percentage of residents that have emigrated from Venezuela. The country is suffering a humanitarian crisis as a consequence of 20 years of radical dictatorship,” explains Martinez. “Our campaign consisted of collecting items to help Venezuelans have access to basic needs. It was amazing and humbling to see the response from the community; the support and the donations received throughout the event – it was a total success.” She credits the KW Cares committee, directed by Patty Vazquez, for their dedication to charitable giving on RED Day and throughout the year. “At Keller Williams, we see an obligation to be a positive contributor to our community. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. Weston Sports Alliance Teams Offer Summer Skills Camps BY STACEY BOMSER

un and fitness are the name of the game with several members of the Weston Sports Alliance offering special skills camps this summer. Programs are available for children with an interest in soccer or baseball. Weston AYSO Region 644 offers a summer soccer camp. During the weekly sessions, players will receive consistent high-level coaching under a structured curriculum. The program focuses on improving technical skills while having fun. Each week focuses on a different skill: dribbling, receiving, passing or shooting. The program runs through August 9th. Another option for aspiring soccer stars is the Futsoc Soccer Club Camp. For the second consecutive year, the Weston Athletic League and Manzy’s Pitching Farm have partnered to offer a one of a kind baseball training program. advancement of players preparing them to have a successful upcoming season. Flatfeet In Children And Adults BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
T
he arch of a person’s foot is the main supporting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops. CAUSES: Flatfeet may be caused by loose ligaments in the arch. Trauma to tendons or bone abnormalities can cause the foot to flatten. Tight calf muscles can severely aggravate the condition. Arthritis in the foot or ankle (rheumatoid or psoriatic) can be a predisposing factor in flatfeet. SYMPTOMS: Pain, usually in the arch, ankles and legs, is often aggravated by standing and walking. Premature fatigue during any type of activity frequently occurs. Cramping in the legs, especially at night, is common. In children, a general lack of interest in participating in sports may be seen. SIGNS: Signs of flatfeet include a flat arch when standing or feet that excessively point to the outside especially during gait. Bulging of the bones on the inside of the ankle and foot are usually seen. Flatfeet are typically associated with knockknees and abnormal shoe wear. RELATED PROBLEMS: Back and knee problems are seen, especially in children and men. Hammertoes, heel spurs and bunions are often associated with flatfeet as a person ages. Inactivity, which can cause weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness, may also occur. Arthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back is common with aging.
TREATMENT: Identify the area of pain and underlying cause as early as possible. Proper shoe gear and custom molded orthotics to support the foot and the entire extremity may be recommended. Other treatments include physical therapy to improve flexibility, strength, balance and coordination. Stretching of the calf muscles in a cast to diminish excessive strain on the arch and improve flexibility is another form of treatment. In some cases, surgery to correct the deformity and return the child or adult to full function may be necessary. Carlo A. Preventing Unwanted Sales Calls and Texts BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK any constituents are confused as to the calls allowed and exempt from the “Do Not Call” list. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services maintains the Florida-specific “Do Not Call” list. Florida residents who do not wish to receive sales calls or sales texts may have their residential, mobile or paging device telephone number included on this list. Exemptions to the Florida Do Not Call Law Some unsolicited sales calls are exempt from the provisions of the law. Solicitors may make calls, when: ▸▸ A prior or existing business relationship exists. ▸▸ In response to an express request of the person called. ▸▸ From a newspaper publisher. ▸▸ In connection with an existing debt or contract. ▸▸ A real estate agent responds to a yard sign or other advertisement. Furthermore, some solicitation calls are not “telephonic sales calls” as defined in the statute because they typically are not selling a product or service. Generally, these calls are from: ▸▸ Charitable organizations seeking donations. ▸▸ Political candidates and political parties seeking a donation. ▸▸ Research or survey companies seeking an opinion. ▸▸ Collection agencies trying to locate a debtor or collect on a debt. If you receive a call from a professional solicitor, charity or seller of goods and you no longer wish to receive calls from that entity, tell the organization that you no longer wish to receive solicitations. Additionally, file a complaint with the Department so that there will be a record that you have previously requested that the entity stop contacting you via telephone. Businesses and charities are required to maintain a list of consumers who have made a do-not-call request, and it is a violation to call a consumer who has asked to be placed on the company’s do-not-call list. If You Receive an Unwanted Sales Call or Text Anyone who receives an unsolicited sales call should attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the caller and immediately report the violation to the Department by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352) and request a form via regular mail, download a Do Not Call Complaint Form or file a Do Not Call Online Complaint. Unwanted sales texts should be preserved for assistance in completing the submission of a Do Not Text Complaint Form. The Department has the authority to contact the solicitor and inform it of the requirements of the law. While the Department does not resolve individual consumer problems, your complaint will help investigate the company and could lead to an enforcement action. Each year the legislature examines potential bills to further curb these annoying calls while preserving constitutional liberties. Dealing With Peer Pressure BY IVIS MATEOS ealing with peer pressure and fitting-in plays an important part in our human growth and development. At a reasonable level, they are necessary factors in character building, since it helps with learning skills such as decision making, resolving conflicts, and making new relationships. Sometimes you will have tough conversations about unjust people and situations. Your instinct as a parent might be to immediately avoid the conversation, however, having intentional, non-judgmental conversations with our children may help change the course of their choices. You are not the only one influencing your children’s lives, therefore it is extremely important that you maintain the lines of communication. Let your children know that you are always available and there for them, ready to listen even through uncomfortable conversations such as bullying, sex, drugs and unkind peers. As parents it is important that we build healthy communication pathways with our children by setting realistic expectations about the conversation and be prepared to deal with a response you might not like. It is perfectly normal to see things differently than your children do. In most cases, children or young adults will think differently than you do and even intentionally do the opposite of what the parent recommends. This is a normal process of social emotional development as they begin their process of independence or transition into adulthood.

Weston Music Society Presents Ten Scholarships BY STACEY BOMSER
P
romoting music education is part of the mission of the Weston Music Society. Each year it presents scholarships to graduating seniors from Cypress Bay and Western high schools, allowing them to further their music studies in college. This year’s scholarship recipients were recognized during a Weston City Commission meeting. Each student received a $500 scholarship, made possible by the Weston Music Society’s scholarship matching program, funded by generous members of the community. Naja Brown will study Music Theatre at Emerson College this coming year thanks, in part, to her scholarship. She says she is grateful for this opportunity. “Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me, because it acts as a reward to all the hard work I’ve put into my goals as a performer. This past year, many days were dedicated to trying to improve my musical abilities for the multiple college auditions I embarked on. It took a lot of discipline and dedication to ensure success in the process, and it is an honor that the Weston Music Society has selected
me as a recipient for the scholarship in response. I am grateful for this opportunity, and it has further inspired me to continue to be a dedicated musician.” Oboe player Chris Avila says he, too, was honored to receive this scholarship which will help support his Music Education studies at FIU. “It represents all the years of hard work that I put into my instrument and how I never gave up on practicing. What this scholarship shows me is that I have been recognized for the hard work that I have put in and I’m grateful
for that and for all of my friends and teachers that have helped me along the way.” The other recipients include cello player Victor Suarez, flutist Daniel Ramos, clarinet player Cooper Garcia, and saxophone player Alexandra Medina. In addition, four soprano singers received scholarships: Nicole Parra, Carolyn Torres, Adialys Serrano and Andrea Tovar. The band and chorus directors at Cypress Bay and Western high schools selected the student musicians. Weston Music Society President Lou Marett and Board Members Renee Smoley and Roger Lander visited each school to hear the students perform. Marett says the Weston Music Society is committed to promoting music education at all grade levels. “Our music education begins in the elementary schools with two performances a year by professional musicians explaining their instruments and giving a short recital. The exciting news for us is that we will be meeting with the Band Boosters at Falcon Cove and Tequesta Trace middle schools and Cypress Bay and Western high schools to explore ways to expand our In Schools Music program.”

One clinical study after another has confirmed that regular aerobic activity — which can range from brisk walking to jogging to running outside or on a treadmill — can add years to your life and prevent or reduce heart disease risk factors such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. And regular exercise can help prevent many cancers, as well. “sweat rate,” which is based on the amount of liquid your body loses after an hour of exercise. By calculating your sweat rate, you can better evaluate what you should drink to replace lost fluid and help avoid injuries. 3. Listen to Your Body Most running injuries, commonly involving knees, the feet, the Achilles heel or the hamstring, don’t appear suddenly. They usually provide slowdeveloping warning signs that should not be ignored. It’s up to each runner to heed the signs and see a doctor before serious injury develops. As part of a major study of lifelong exercisers last year — which included runners and brisk-walkers — researchers found that those in their mid-70s who have been active for most of their lives have similar cardiovascular health to 40-45-year-olds.

Buyers will always ask, “How long has this home been on the market?” As your home sits, buyers lose their excitement. How do you avoid this? Power pricing, as we like to call it. Power pricing is being at the top of all of the buyers’ searches, while pricing aggressively. The key to selling a home is to price to stimulate activity – not to test the market. Attempting to set a price that will create a lot of negotiating room may result in you never getting the chance to settle in the first place. With the right price in the right market, as well as the correct marketing and presentation, you could potentially get multiple offers in a very short amount of time. On the other hand, when a home is priced too high, it will be avoided by buyers and their agents. The rule of thumb is the longer your home stays on the market, the offers will become lower, or there will be no offers at all. After the first two weeks, the buyer pool will drop as everyone in that pool has seen your property online or has made an appointment to actually walk through it. As a home sits on the market week after week, buyers start to wonder what is wrong with it. Why has it taken so long to sell? Eventually, they may assume that you are either pricing the home too high, or there is something seriously wrong with the property. If you choose to price for a large amount of negotiation room, as many sellers do, keep in mind that once all efforts to market your property – such as Internet exposure with high-quality photography, videos, social media target boosts, magazines, and open houses/brokers opens have been exhausted, price repositioning will most likely be in order. Why? If you wait too long, buyers will suspect that there are issues with the home. However, the good news is, today’s buyers tend to watch properties they like online. They stalk the listings, waiting for the ideal price. When that price is posted, the phone calls and showings begin again. Keep in mind, the Internet does not sell overpriced homes. It’s all about being smart when pricing your home. Power pricing makes selling your home much more enjoyable and less time-consuming.

Cypress Bay Thespians Take Home Two Cappie Awards BY STACEY BOMSER

ypress Bay High School’s award-winning drama department took home two prestigious Cappie Awards from the 17th annual South Florida Cappie Gala. The awards program recognizes students from Broward and Palm Beach County high schools for excellence in theater productions. Cypress Bay received 12 nominations; eleven for its production of Mamma Mia!, the popular Broadway musical based on the songs of ABBA, including Best Musical and Best Song, as well as one critic nomination. Two Cypress Bay students received prestigious Cappie Awards for their work on the production. Cristina (Cristy) Marine won Best Comic Actress in a Musical for her role as “Rosie,” while Valeria Jubes received the award for Best Choreography. In addition, The Sagemont School received three Cappie Awards for its production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which received 13 nominations. Eva Daskos was a double winner, receiving awards for Best Actress in a Play for her role as “Puck” and Best Costumes. Castmate Aaron Cantu won Featured Actor in a Play for his role as “Nick Bottom” in Act Two. Students from 13 schools received awards
during this year’s Cappie Gala, which took place at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Awards were presented in 42 categories including performance, design, production, publicity and criticism. Cypress Bay had several students perform in the gala’s energetic opening number which parodied “Another Op’nin, Another Show” from Kiss Me Kate. Members of the Lightning Drama Department took the stage for a second time, performing “Does Your Mother Know?” During the awards ceremony, the audience was treated to songs from six productions nominated for Best Musical and/or Best Song. Scenes from the five Best Play nominees were also presented during the gala. The Cappies is a national writing and awards program that trains high school theater and journalism students to be expert writers, critical thinkers and leaders. Cappie Award winners are determined by votes from students through a weighted peer-review voting process. Nominations are made by student critics from participating schools who attend productions at rival schools and write reviews, which are then edited by theater educators and published on FloridaTheaterOnStage.com.

Cypress Bay Graduate Builds Foundation for Success BY STACEY BOMSER
T
here are more than 50 student clubs at Cypress Bay High School, but one of the most popular and most successful is the Habitat for Humanity Chapter. In just three years, it has grown to over 450 members and, more impressively, has raised over $20,000 to help build homes for families in need. That success is due in a large part to the hard work and dedication of club founder Matthew Liebman. Matthew and his family moved to Weston while he was in high school. He was a new kid in a new school trying to find his place. Matthew says he joined a few clubs but never really felt a connection, so he decided to start his own. Having come from Detroit, a city that declared bankruptcy in 2013, Matthew knew of the challenges facing families in poverty-stricken areas. He also knew that he wanted to belong to a service club that truly provided a service, allowing students to give back to the community. When he learned about Habitat for Humanity, he knew he had found his calling. “It’s mission and purpose are simply to provide a place for people to call
home,” shares Matthew. “This was an organization that could demonstrate real results in my own community.” Matthew had to overcome numerous obstacles before establishing a Habitat for Humanity Chapter, namely proving to school administrators

that there was a need for yet another service club. Another challenge was that volunteers must be at least 18 years old to help build the Habitat homes, ruling out most high school students. However, students can contribute by volunteering at the Habitat Restore (retail establishment) as well as planting landscaping and painting the homes. In addition to providing manpower, the club is also committed to raising money to support Habitat for Humanity’s efforts. It has hosted various sports tournaments as well as fundraisers at restaurants and exercise/fitness centers, along with traditional fundraisers like carwashes and bake sales. The club even has its own clothing website. The $20,000 raised will go towards building homes at the Rick Case Habitat Community in Pompano Beach and in a newly launched site in Miramar. Matthew says founding the Habitat for Humanity Club at Cypress Bay was an invaluable experience. He feels honored to be making a difference on campus and in the community. “We

impact and sustain our local community through providing families with access to the American dream of home ownership. Protecting Your Eyes From The Sun BY DR. JANE THERRIEN ummertime means more time spent outdoors, in the pool, at the beach, or even just BBQ-ing! All that outdoor activity means more exposure to direct sunlight. Studies show that exposure to bright sunlight may increase the risk of developing ocular diseases like cataracts, retinopathy, and growths on the eye, including cancer. UV light is certainly responsible for development of corneal and lens conditions regardless of the UV exposure being natural or synthetic. This means the same risk applies when using tanning beds, so be sure to protect your eyes from indoor UV light as well. Also, remember that sunlight reflected off sand and water can cause conditions like photokeratitis, which is responsible for snow blindness so beach- and poolgoers take note. It is unfortunate that many people are unaware of the dangers UV light can pose. By wearing UV blocking sunglasses, you can enjoy the summer safely while lowering your risk for potentially blinding eye diseases and tumors. It is important to start wearing proper eye protection at an early age to protect your eyes from years of ultraviolet exposure. Sunglasses are available for all ages, from birth through life. According to a national Sun Safety Survey, only about half of people who wear sunglasses say they check the UV rating before buying. The good news is that you can easily protect yourself. In order to be eye smart in the sun, you should use the following recommendations: ▸▸ Wear only sunglasses that block both UV-A and UV-B rays and that are labeled either UV400 or 100% UV protection. ▸▸ Wear polarized lenses. While any lenses that have 100% UV protection will give you protection, polarized lenses will protect your eyes while also giving you the best vision quality. ▸▸ Choose wraparound styles so that the sun’s rays cannot enter from the side. ▸▸ If you wear UV-blocking contact lenses, you still need sunglasses. ▸▸ Wear a hat along with your sunglasses; broad-brimmed hats are best. ▸▸ Remember the kids. It’s best to keep children out of direct sunlight during the middle of the day. Make sure they wear sunglasses and hats whenever they are in the sun. ▸▸ Know that clouds don’t block UV light. The sun’s rays can pass through haze and clouds. Sun damage to the eyes can occur any time of year, not just in summer. ▸▸ Be extra careful in UV-intense conditions. Sunlight is strongest mid-day to early afternoon and when reflected off of water. By embracing these simple tips, you and your family can enjoy the summer sun safely while protecting your vision.

It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues, by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique non- adversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation”. There are some definite rules that must be followed if the parties agree to use the collaborative process. In the collaborative process, both parties and their respective attorneys act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances there are other “team members” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and therefore the “IT IS THE POLICY OF THIS STATE parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” TO ENCOURAGE THE PEACEFUL on more than one occasion. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process, each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney”, there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. Be very precise in setting your club face angle at address and ensuring that your body lines are aligned perfectly. Making Sense of Facial Rejuvenation BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ifestyle lift, S-Lift, Whisper lift, Feather lift, etc. The names go on and on but these procedures are almost identical. Cosmetic surgeons will change the name of a straightforward procedure in an attempt to gain new patients, attract attention to “their” practice, or to lure an uneducated patient into thinking that “their” procedure is somehow “better” than what has been done thousands of times before by well-qualified plastic surgeons. I will attempt to clarify this terminology with an explanation of facelift technique and indications. The original “facelift procedure” was performed by Dr. Eugen Höllander in 1901, and involved elevating with tightening the facial skin only. The procedure has evolved and undergone multiple transformations. Today, a facelift typically involves elevation of the skin on cheek and neck with tightening of the underlying muscle (the SMAS in the cheek and the platysma on the neck). The 21st Century approach to facial rejuvenation focuses on a structured reconstruction as well with fat grafting and tissue tightening. As the skin ages there is a progressive loss of collagen and elastic which results in increased skin laxity. This skin change, coupled with loss of the underlying soft tissue volume, results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, and neck bands. In order to improve the appearance of the face and neck, a skin tightening procedure should be performed. This can be accomplished several ways, lifting and removing excess skin, a skin resurfacing procedure with laser or chemical peel, or restoring loss of soft tissue volume with fat or synthetic fillers. These techniques can be used alone or in a combination depending on each person’s individual facial anatomy and appearance goals. In describing face lifting procedures, the facial skin is elevated, the underlying muscle is tightened and excess skin is removed. When the skin laxity is limited to the cheek area, a mini – or short-scar facelift, can be performed (scar is limited to the area in the front of the ear). If neck skin laxity and neck bands are present, additional incisions can be made behind the ear and under the chin. This technique is referred to as a full facelift, or face and neck lift. The Lifestyle lift and S-Lift have similar incisions with limited undermining or elevation of the face and neck skin. If there is heaviness or sagging of the eyebrow then a browlift or forehead lift is performed. The aging appearance of the upper and lower eyelids is treated with a blepharoplasty and is a separate procedure from a facelift. In certain cases, depending on the patient’s facial appearance, a facelift is performed in combination with soft tissue volume addition by fat transfer, skin smoothing with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing. All of the procedures can be performed under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s medical history and comfort level. The most important factor to consider when making a decision to have elective cosmetic surgery is the surgeon, the facility, and the anesthesia provider. Only have facial plastic surgery performed by a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery in an accredited outpatient facility or hospital. Traveling With Your Dog BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM ur pets share so much of our lives that many of us don’t want to consider traveling without them. Whether you are flying or driving, sharing a trip with a pet can add richness to the experience. Proper planning can make the travel experience better and less stressful for you and for your pet. What Food and Medications Should I Bring? Changing your dog’s food can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other problems that can be difficult to deal with while traveling. Try to bring enough of your dog’s regular food for the duration of the trip and try to maintain the feeding and toilet schedule your dog is used to at home. If your pet receives medication, bring enough for the trip and try to maintain your regular schedule. If you are traveling by car or RV, bringing your dog’s favorite bed, blanket, or toys can also help make the trip more relaxing and pleasant. If you are flying, you will need an airline-approved carrier; you should also request that your dog fly in a temperature-controlled cargo area. How Should I Plan for Travel With My Dog? Many hotels and rental properties allow pets. Locating proper accommodations ahead of time and being clear about fees (some places charge an extra fee for pets) can help minimize anxiety when you arrive. Most airlines require a health certificate for pets that will be flying. The health certificate generally states that the pet is in good health and free from any infectious or contagious diseases. Don’t assume this document can be obtained from your veterinarian on the way to the airport! Your dog may need a physical examination, fecal exam, or other procedures before your veterinarian can sign

a health certificate. Also, the certificate must be obtained within a certain window of time before you travel. Find out from your airline what their requirements are and plan to get the health certificate ahead of time. Should I Sedate My Dog for Travel? Giving a tranquilizer to a dog before traveling has pros and cons. Sedation can have side effects, including lowering body temperature (which could be an issue if your pet is flying in the cargo area of a plane), and causing hypotension (low blood pressure). Others may argue that a little light sedation can calm a dog that is overly stressed or excited while traveling and can therefore make the trip more pleasant for everyone involved. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Remember that sedation does not address all travel issues; if your dog has severe motion sickness or gets extremely stressed while traveling, it may be better to arrange for a pet sitter or board him or her. Also, not every dog is a good candidate for a tranquilizer, so ask your veterinarian if sedation is a good idea for your dog. If you have never given your dog a tranquilizer before, give a test dose ahead of your trip. Pick a day when you will be home with your pet for most of the day. That way, if the medication causes excessive sedation or other negative side effects, you will be there to intervene and call your veterinarian for help. Students in Shannon Martinez’s first grade class at Gator Run Elementary hosted an Author’s Night to present to their parents the books they published about themselves and their experiences in first grade.
Eagle Point Elementary students took part in the annual Battle of the Books, answering Jeopardy-style questions. Mrs. Quillen‘s fifth grade class was the big winner after defeating Mrs. DeLaNuez’s fourth grade class in the championship round.

As part of its In-School Music Program, the Weston Music Society arranged to have Willie Stewart visit Country Isles Elementary and Gator Run Elementary, where he introduced students to percussion instruments. Stewart is the former drummer of the Third World, a Jamaican reggae fusion band.

After completing a unit on economics, third graders at Gator Run Elementary put what they learned about supply and demand, profits, and marketing to the test with Market Day. Students made items to sell to their peers and classmates.
FOND FAREWELL
Students at Eagle Point Elementary School delivered a heartfelt goodbye to Assistant Principal Rosado, who retired after 13 years at the school and 27 years with Broward Schools. The children presented her with flowers and homemade cards.

Congratulations to the Weston University Class of 2019. The graduation ceremony for the 24 students who completed this year’s one-of-a-kind civic education program took place during a Weston City Commission meeting also attended by School Board Members Laurie Rich Levinson and Robin Bartleman. District Fire Chief Todd Draizin, Mayor Daniel Stermer and the Weston City Commission recognized the newest members of Weston Community Emergency Response Team. Eighteen volunteers completed training by BSO to assist first responders and care for family and friends in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. Weston has approximately 100 CERT Team members.
