Back to School in South Florida

S

ummer vacations are a hallmark of modern life. After the final bell of the school year rings, children from across the country anxiously head home, often looking forward to trips abroad, excursions to the beach, local “staycations” or time at summer camps. Summer break, however, does not last forever. Most local kids return to school on August 14th this year. They will bring with them stories of adventure, excitement and maybe even a little bit of boredom. Like vacation options, the number of after-school programs has exploded. There are a myriad of activities and opportunities for families to choose from. Parents also have more choice in how their kids are educated today; rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, parents now decide between their local public school, charter schools, private schools or online learning. So many choices can become overwhelming. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out Our City’s Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide our readers with a useful guide to help get ready for the new school year. Remember to enjoy the last couple weeks of summer. Before you know it, school will have already started.

City Commission Unanimously Chooses New City Manager

W

eston’s new City Manager may be a familiar face to many Weston residents. Donald “Don” Decker, who currently serves as Director of Parks and Recreation, was selected by unanimous vote of the Weston City Commission to serve as City Manager, replacing John Flint when he retires in October. The vote was made during a special meeting of the Weston City Commission after a five-month search process that included over 70 applicants. Decker was selected from a final pool of seven candidates. “Based on the unanimous vote of the Commission, each member concluded that Mr. Decker has the commitment, personality, and passion to lead the City forward into its next phase and has the confidence that he is the right person to follow Mr. Flint,” shared Mayor Daniel Stermer, adding that “Mr. Decker has been with the City of Weston for over 18 years and received

strong support from the community.” Decker says it has been an honor to serve as Director of Parks and Recreation and he looks forward to stepping up to the new role. “What was created here was done so with intent, vision and resolve that I am eager to help sustain as we move into the second generation of the community. It is my goal to make sure that the people moving into Weston tomorrow have the same excitement we did as new residents moving here 21 years ago.”

Mayor Stermer congratulates Don Decker

As a longtime Weston resident, Decker is personally vested in the community. “We moved here for many of the same reasons all of our residents moved here; the great schools and the beautiful environment. Our children were born and raised here. I think having a strong respect for our past is imperative when considering where we are going in the future.” Decker believes his experience as Director of Parks and Recreation will benefit him in the City Manager position. “There is little doubt that my contact over the years with residents Incoming City Manager Don Decker. in various Weston organizations has allowed a unique perspective into Fire Station), sustainability (LED the collective wants and needs of parking lot lighting upgrades at City the community.” facilities), and enjoyment (renovation Although Decker will not officially of the Weston Tennis Center and conbecome City Manager until October, struction of a new Community Center),” he is already starting to outline his explains Decker. “Most importantly, priorities, which will be shaped by the my priority is to ensure the City staff City Commission. “We have significant and our partners that the steady leadcapital projects on the horizon that will ership they have become accustomed provide for our safety (Bonaventure to will continue.”

City Steps Up Efforts To Be #WestonReady BY STACEY BOMSER

A

t the start of hurricane season, two members of the City’s Communications Department attended a crisis management training program at the National Hurricane Center. Communications Director Denise Barrett-Miller and Assistant Director Pamela Solomon spent the day learning exactly what to do in the event that a natural disaster, emergency situation or another crisis event occurred in Weston. “As we have seen, far too often, crisis can happen anytime and anywhere,” states Barrett-Miller in explaining why it is important for the City of Weston to prepare for crisis communications. “No community is immune from a crisis or tragic event.” She says the class primarily focused on on-camera and in-person interviews during crisis situations. “The program provided a wealth of information, some already known and some presented in a very unique format, including a formula for actually staying on message and providing the 12-second sound bite that a news crew is looking for and then would be less likely to take your words out of context.” Other lessons included how to best communicate your message to your key audience – your residents. “Everyone in communications, especially in government, tends to be very specific and technical with our

details,” explains Barrett-Miller. “We were reminded that we are talking to the public and that we need to reconnect with the heart. We were encouraged to think about what we would say if we were talking to a child or a friend – and just say it that way.” She notes that the training program also covered selecting the best interview location and time, how to challenge incorrect information, what to include in fact sheets, tips on how to stick to the topic, and how to wrap up the interview. Barrett-Miller is hoping to never have to use these crisis management skills but says this training could

come into play for various reasons. “Heaven forbid there was any type of mass casualty incident, a natural disaster, a plane crash, a bad explosion or large fire – it really could be anything that causes a media interest. It actually doesn’t have to be bad. It could just as easily be a superstar or high level politician that decides to come into town and that attracts wide attention and media.” Attending this crisis communications training program is one of many things the City is doing to ensure it is prepared in the event of a disaster or crisis situation. It is reminding residents that they, too, must be prepared, especially as we head into the heart of hurricane season. “Preparation and communication are our main messages,” stresses Barrett-Miller. “An emergency can happen at any time. Have a communication plan. Be sure ALL members of the household know another location to meet if your home cannot be accessed and a family or friend to call. Everyone should have enough supplies on-hand to last for three days after a hurricane. This means enough of everything you would need without being able to leave your home.” The City of Weston wants residents to be #WestonReady. Visit www.WestonFl.org/Hurricane for more information.

“Make Me Smile!” is this year’s contest theme and participants are invited to submit an original photograph of a person, place or thing that makes them smile. “A picture is worth a thousand words. Arts Council Vice President Carol Lema says she is continually impressed by the talent exhibited by local photographers of all ages. “Our Summer Instagram Contest is a great way for non-professional area photographers to build their portfolios by

To enter, simply post a picture depicting the “Make Me Smile!” theme to Instagram using #acgwsmile. You can submit one photo per day. The contest ends Monday, August 12th. Make Plans to Attend the Family Bike Ride & Expo BY STACEY BOMSER

G

rab your bicycle and helmet and head over to Weston Regional Park on Friday, August 9th, from 6-8pm, for the Family Bike Ride & Expo. The free program is hosted by the City of Weston, the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the YMCA of South Florida. Denise Barrett-Miller, Director of Communications for the City of Weston, says this event was planned to promote the importance of bike safety education to the community’s youth and families and to provide a fun family outing before the start of school. She says reinforcing bicycle safety rules is especially important as children will soon be riding to and from school. “Children and adults need to learn and practice the laws governing bicycles. Children must wear helmets for their protection if under 16 years of age and all bikes must have lighting equipment. Also, headsets are never to be worn when riding. These are just a few important laws.” BSO will provide free helmet fitting. Child ID cards will also be distributed. In addition to promoting safety, the Family Bike Ride & Expo also

promotes cycling as a form of exercise. “Recreational biking is something the whole family can participate in,” explains Barrett-Miller. “It is a low-impact aerobic activity that helps create balance, increased cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, flexibility, decreased stress levels and improved coordination, plus it’s fun!” Everyone is invited to join the fun. Mayor Daniel Stermer and several of the City Commissioners, along with BSO Deputies and other Weston Department Directors, will be peddling around the park as they join residents for the Family Bike Ride. To allow little ones to participate in the Family Bike Ride, the YMCA will host a Tot Bike Rodeo. This special section will have activities specifically geared towards smaller children, ages two to five. All ages will be amazed by the BMX Trickstars show. During this incredible performance, professional BMX bike riders lead by example and teach kids the importance of bicycle safety. Each show includes flatland, tricks done on the ground, and high-flying Big Air tricks on a portable nine-foot tall 1/4 pipe and box jump. Tricks include 360s, tail

whips, Superman jumps and backflips. Barrett-Miller says while the event is all about fun, she hopes everyone leaves with new safety knowledge. “Weston is a family friendly community and we want everyone to not just feel safe but to be safe when they are out and about. It takes a little effort on everyone’s part – drivers need to slow down and have some extra patience for cyclists. Bicycles are considered vehicles and they have a right on the roadway as well. On school days, we have literally hundreds of children in school zones each morning and afternoon. It is essential that everyone know and follow the rules of the road and we’ll all be safe and have an enjoyable time each day.”

City Parks Promote Fun and Fitness STACEY BOMSER

he newly renovated Indian Trace Park is set to open just in time for the start of the school year. It will offer new recreational facilities for use by students at Indian Trace Elementary as well as the Weston community. Director of Parks and Recreation Don Decker says after 20 years, Indian Trace Park needed an update. “There is a good chance that many residents did not know that the land next to the school was actually a City park. The City of Weston wanted to improve accessibility to the park, including walkways and parking, and add amenities that were reflective of the experience at our other parks.” Residents can now access the park through a parking lot on Saddle Club Road, while the school can enter the facilities through gates that can be locked from the school-side. Decker says this is the same arrangement the City has at Gator Run Park and Windmill Ranch Park, both of which are also adjacent to elementary schools. The park features a resurfaced basketball court and resurfaced multi-purpose court, as well as a baseball field and multi-purpose field. Another exciting improvement is the addition of fitness stations, including an ab crunch/leg lift, cardio stepper, chest/back press, pull-up/dip and an elliptical station. Decker says the City is committed to improving the recreational opportunities available to residents. “One sure fire way to combat childhood and adult obesity and related health risks is to create outdoor spaces that people want to 28 AUGUST 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

be in. The City of Weston is constantly striving to maintain and improve the residents’ experience.” The entire park was designed with accessibility in mind. According to Decker, the fitness equipment and playground are ADA compliant with rubber surfacing that promotes safety and accessibility. The walkways, restrooms and parking lot are all built in ADA compliance as well. This fall, the City will break ground on Bonaventure Park. Located at the corner of Racquet Club Road and Botaniko South, it is the first public park located within the Bonaventure community. It, too, will provide hours of fun and fitness for residents. Bonaventure Park will offer a halfcourt basketball court, like the one at Emerald Estates Park, and fitness stations. Decker says Bonaventure Park will include some of the more popular pieces of equipment, like the pull-up/ dip, as well as some unique elements like a squat press and stretching station. He says all ages will enjoy the new playground, which features built-in shade elements. “We are planning some unique playground experiences so that those families who like to mix it up with different experiences will have the opportunity to do so.” Both Bonaventure Park and Indian Trace Park will feature Fixit bike repair stations. “Cycling is a popular activity in our community and having Fixit stations strategically placed around the City provides a convenience,” explains Decker.

City Launches New Website Services BY STACEY BOMSER

W

e live in a digital age and the City of Weston is working to put as much information as possible online and at residents’ fingertips. It recently launched a new map-based application and portal called My City Services that helps homeowners find important information relating to an address/parcel within the City. “My City Services is intended to be a one-stopshop for information relating to a specific address,” states Director of Technology Services Ryan Fernandes. “By simply submitting or selecting an address, users can access a wide array of data. This includes available City services, property information, planning and zoning designations, permits, code enforcement cases, flood hazard zones, school zones, political districts, garbage and recycling services, nearest parks and public safety information.” Fernandes says the site can be used by both residents as well as people looking to purchase a house in Weston. With this app, interested parties can see which building permits have been issued, if there are any code enforcement violations, whether the property is in flood zone, its proximately to fire hydrants and police and fire stations, and much more. There is even a link to the Broward County Property Appraiser’s website to check the home’s

appraised value and property taxes. “Additional data elements like demographic and crime data statistics are being gathered and may be added in the future,” notes Fernandes. The City of Weston is constantly working to improve its online presence. According to Fernandes, Weston is continuously improving its service delivery, customer experience and transparency through the use of innovative technologies such as the My City Services app. “New developments in web technologies including cloud computing and web services are having a profound impact on the City of Weston,” explains Fernandes. “Our constituents are increasingly demanding greater transparency, accountability, and access to information which is a driving force behind what is known as the Open Data movement in government. Our goal is to create a self-service data portal through our public facing website which improves our service delivery and transparency.” My City Services is available via the City’s website under “Maps & Apps” or directly at http:// mapviewer.westonfl.org/MyCityServices/. Simply input the address in the “Search by Address” box in upper right-hand corner of screen. Step-by-step instructions are available by clicking Help (the question mark).

s we begin to age, we notice that our bodies tend to hold more weight and we don’t recover as quickly—energy is lacking and muscle is decreasing. One reason we experience this decline in how or body behaves is that we don’t produce as much Human Growth Hormone (HGH) as we do in our younger years. HGH is produced by the pituitary gland and it is an important hormone for several body processes such as stimulating growth, regulating body composition, keeping up digestive system, insulin levels, energy levels and more. It is no wonder our bodies start to fall apart when its production declines. It is literally the body’s fountain of youth drying up. This is why HGH therapy is so popular—it helps rejuvenate the body and fight signs of aging. But HGH Therapy is not an option for everyone and some of the treatments are still illegal and controversial. What if there was a better way to get our bodies to get that fountain of youth flowing again, naturally and safely? Good news. There is! In recent years, functional medicine is moving toward a simpler, cutting-edge approach for antiaging treatments through the use of peptides. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids and these amino acids are the building blocks of protein. So we can think of peptides as small proteins. Protein is what makes up much of the body’s tissues organs and skin. What is so innovative about the use of peptides is that scientist have discovered thousands of them. They are so specific they can be used to stimulate specific cell receptors—this is us telling the body what we want it to do. And with this approach, we can effectively fight disease, aging, weight gain and so much more. The use of one specific peptide or a combination of peptides can affect important processes such as stimulating the pituitary gland to secrete growth hormone, for example. This definitely trumps having patients taking synthetic hormones and this is why peptide therapy is becoming the treatment of choice in functional medicine. More HGH in the body translates into more muscle, better performance and better recovery. This is the reason peptide therapy can be used to target weight loss, improve sports performance and increase overall sense of well-being. Because this unique treatment offers specificity and control, patients and doctors can tailor results. Whether you are looking to reverse signs of aging, shed a few pounds or have more energy at the gym, it is imperative that you work with qualified practitioner who can study and understand your needs as well as medical history in order to make an adequate recommendation. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Give Your Time to Support the Arts BY STACEY BOMSER

W

ith the start of the 2019-2020 cultural season nearing, now is the perfect time to get involved and show your support by becoming a volunteer. “Volunteering is the backbone of many organizations, especially in the arts and culture areas,” explains Joy Rodenberg, active volunteer and Board Member of the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the Weston Music Society. “We do understand that many of our volunteers must move on – back to school, to new jobs or, literally, to relocate to new areas. This is why we continually need to call for volunteers. It is exciting for us, as we get to meet new people bringing new ideas.” She adds, the volunteers also gain from the experience. “Our volunteers enjoy the opportunity to gain new experiences, acquire new skills, make new friends, and expand their networks, all while giving back to their community.” There are four not-for-profit organizations run exclusively by volunteers here in Weston. All are

dedicated to the arts and culture and need help in maintaining and advancing their offerings. The Arts Council of Greater Weston coordinates cultural and performing arts event requests on behalf of the City of Weston, as well as provides planning, oversight and support for the diverse cultural activities and events hosted in collaboration with the City. Its programs include Celebrate the Arts Day, Weston World Fest, Weston Foreign Film Series, and the Student Artist Showcase. The Arts Council needs volunteers to coordinate key roles at events, serve as Recording Secretary, and to provide technical computer skills to organize administrative and event activities. For more information go to www.1Weston.com. The Weston Music Society’s mission is to bring fine music of all genres to Weston, offer music education programs in local schools, and provide scholarships to graduating seniors to continue their music studies. Volunteers are needed to serve as Recording Secretary, run events, and provide social media and computer skills to help organize and promote events. For more information go www. WestonMusicSociety.org.

The Weston Art Guild supports all forms of visual arts. It organizes exhibits featuring the work of local artists, hosts monthly meetings with artist demonstrations, and promotes outlets for artists to sell their work. Volunteers are needed to organize arts events. For more information go to www. WestonArtGuild.com. Through sales from its book shop, the Weston Friends of the Library offers financial support to the library, allowing it to offer programs for all ages. Volunteers are needed to work in the bookstore and to serve on the fundraising, social media/publicity and membership committees. A recording secretary is also needed. Boy Scouts of America Build Future Leaders BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he start of a new school year is a great time to consider joining the Boy Scouts of America. It offers two programs here in Weston, with Cub Scout Pack 341 serving boys in kindergarten through fifth grade and Boy Scout Troop 383 serving students in sixth through twelfth grades. Each program stresses community service, leadership, personal development and, most important, fun for the whole family. “The Cub Scouts is a youth organization designed to develop the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of boys in order to help them become productive members of society,” explains Cubmaster Christina Montalvan. “While some of our most obvious activities are camping and hiking, we also focus on helping the boys develop a code of behaviors and understand and participate in citizenship activities that are designed to improve the community at large.” While Cub Scouts allows boys to make lifelong friends and learn life skills, Montalvan says it also provides once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for

families to share, such as camping under a space shuttle and meeting an astronaut at the Kennedy Space Center. As boys move from elementary school to middle school, they advance to Boy Scouts, building upon the foundation they established in Cub Scouts.

According to Troop 383 Outdoor Committee Chair Jonathan Wolfe, “Boy Scouts is an amazing opportunity to help develop young men into outstanding citizens, leaders and with a set of skills which will benefit them for life. It provides opportunities across a multitude of experiences from backpacking and camping in some of the most beautiful parts of the country to learning professional skills such as communication, salesmanship and first aid.”

The Troop 383 program is Scout-led, with adult guidance, with a focus on high adventure. “This past year, our scouts hiked over 250 miles, canoed over 30 miles on two different rivers, camped over 20 nights, fished in the Keys, shot rifles and clays with trained professionals, learned CPR from Broward Sheriffs, camped on a frozen lake and dog sledded, hiked the Appalachian, Old Cutler, Barefoot Mailman and Colorado trails,” shares Wolfe. The boys are also committed to community service, with many earning the prestigious Eagle Scout Award. According to Advancement Chair Joyce Jeha, “These impressive young men are often volunteering their time unprompted and truly want to make a difference.” Both Pack 341 and Troop 383 are accepting new members. Cub Scout Pack 341 meets Monday nights at 6:30pm in the Eagle Point Elementary School cafeteria; call Eddy Wayman at 954-778-9898 for more information. Boy Scout Troop 383 meets Tuesdays at 6:45, also at Eagle Point; contact New Member Coordinator Matt Bukala at 954-729-6835 for more information. SAFETY CORNER

Back to School Safety Tips BY ASSISTANT DISTRICT CHIEF BRADLEY MASTERS, ack to School time is just around the corner. Thinking about this transition brings angst to both parents and their children. The end of summer fun for the kids, the coming rigors of schoolwork, earlier bedtimes, all can be saddening for them. The parents are often stressed with the coming return of the morning school routine, the after-school activities, whether they are homework and meal preparation or the sports practices and games, or as with so many of us, a very busy combination of all of these. We need to keep in mind the safety of the children. Preparing them for this change in routine is vital. Preparing ourselves, as parents, for this transition is also an important part of the equation. Getting an earlier start to the day in an effort to ease the last minute need to rush will make it all a little easier. Getting a decent breakfast in their bellies will wake them up, as well as fuel their bodies and brains for their busy day ahead. Getting a good start is good for both the children and the parents. Travel to and from school is often considered routine but playing it safe while enroute to school is important. Some basic safety ideas about traveling to and from school include: 1.  When taking the school bus teach your children to be S.A.F.E. – ▸▸ Stay five steps away from the curb. ▸▸ Always wait for the bus driver to tell you to board. ▸▸ Face forward after finding a seat on the bus. ▸▸ Exit the bus when it stops, look left and right, take five steps away from the bus towards the curb. 2.  Accompany children under age ten when walking to school ▸▸ Use the sidewalk whenever possible. ▸▸ Focus on traffic – this is no time for horseplay. ▸▸ Use the crosswalks. ▸▸ Look left-right-left before crossing the street. 3.  Kids love riding their bikes, it is fun and healthy exercise. Remember to: ▸▸ Always wear a properly fitted helmet. ▸▸ Ride in the same direction as traffic, and follow traffic signs and signals. ▸▸ Stay in the bike lane whenever possible. ▸▸ Use the sidewalk appropriately, and watch out for pedestrians. ▸▸ Never use electronics while riding – they are distracting. 4.  When driving to school, always drive defensively. ▸▸ Be on the lookout for children walking and riding to school. ▸▸ Teenagers may be enjoying newfound freedom when driving to school, counsel them on the responsibility that they have undertaken with their new abilities. Again, please don’t use electronic devices while walking, riding, or driving, whether it be to school or anywhere else. Leave the headphones for breaks at school, or even better, leave them at home. Distractions such as these can lead to devastating results. Finally, remember to hydrate, parents and children alike. Bring a bottle of water with you and send one to school with the kids. Maintaining good personal hydration levels will make for a better day for everyone! Have fun. Heads up. Stay safe. Be careful.

Girl Scouts Empowers Girls BY STACEY BOMSER

L

ast month’s World Cup win by the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team sent a strong message of “Girl Power” to girls and young women everywhere. But, did you know that the Girls Scouts of the USA has been empowering girls for over 100 years? It provides girls, ages five to 17, with the courage, confidence and character to make the world a better place. Girls Scouts offers programs for girls from kindergarten through high school with Daisies (kindergarten and first grade), Brownies (second and third grade), Juniors (fourth and fifth grade), Cadettes (middle school), Seniors (ninth and tenth grade) and Ambassadors (eleventh and twelfth grade). Girls can join at any time and at any age. “Every girl deserves a place where she can be her best self and unleash her inner GIRL (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) and that place is Girl Scouts,” states Kelsey Otocki, marketing specialist with Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. “Girls in our program get to choose their own path and make decisions about what they want to learn in a safe, judgement-free space. Girl Scouts offers handson, girl-centered learning in STEM and empowers girls to get out into their communities to make real change.” One place you regularly see Girl Scouts in the community is at cookie booths outside local stores. “The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-

led entrepreneurial program in the world!” boasts Otocki. “Girls who participate in the cookie sale program learn skills essential to leadership, to success and to life, including goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. On top of it all, girls get to put their cookie earnings to good use whether it is for a special trip, supplies for a community service project, or even donating to a worthy cause – the girls get to choose.” Personal choice is particularly important as girls get older and start pursuing interests that may shape their future career. “Everything a Girl Scout does centers around STEM, the outdoors, development of life skills, and entrepreneurship, and is designed to meet her where she is now and grow along with her,” explains Otocki. “The inclusive, all-female environment of a Girl Scout troop creates a safe space where girls can try new things, develop a range of skills, take on leadership roles, and just be themselves.” Older girls can take advantage of Girl Scouts’ Bronze, Silver and Gold Award programs, which are all very prestigious achievements. These awards can lead to national recognition and scholarships for higher education. n Interested families can learn more about Girl Scouts by visiting www.gssef.org, emailing customercare@gssef.org or calling 561-427-0177.

Staying Healthy in the South Florida Heat

By: Kiki Bochi

Summer seems like the season when we should be most carefree. But it actually is associated with a spike in injuries and illnesses, statistics show. “A lot of it is related to the heat, the sun and accidents,” said Andrew Savin, M.D., an internist with Baptist Health South Florida. “Maybe it’s because kids are out of school. You get a lot of sprains, strains, broken bones and accidents — car accidents, bike accidents, boat accidents, motorcycle accidents.” compromised by runoff, sewage spills and animal waste. Teach children to keep their mouth closed and to avoid swallowing water. 4. Buzz Off Those pesky mosquitoes don’t just cause itchy bites. They can also transfer a number of diseases, including West Nile virus, Zika, dengue and chikungunya. Protect your family with insect repellent, which is considered safe for even pregnant women and babies older than 2 months.

While no one can prevent every mishap, it helps to take precautions and, most of all, use common sense. South Florida’s summer heat extends well into back-to-school season.

Here are a few tips for staying healthy when scorching temperatures are present: 1. Eat With Caution Before you dive into the potato salad — or any other dish at the backyard or beach barbecue — consider how long it has been sitting out. Foodborne illnesses peak in the summer, when temperatures cause bacteria to flourish. Wash surfaces and utensils after each use, cook meats thoroughly, refrigerate leftovers promptly and don’t contaminate anything with the juices from raw meats. 40 AUGUST 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

2. Stay Cool and Hydrated Your body normally cools itself naturally through sweating, but sometimes that’s not enough. Heat-related illnesses — including heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke — occur when a person’s temperature rises to dangerous levels and body fluids are thrown off. Heat stroke is most prevalent in older adults, but even the young and healthy can be affected. 3. Watch the Water Although it may look refreshing, water can make you sick. Public swimming areas can harbor bacteria that cause gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye and wound infections. Bacteria can live for days, even in properly chlorinated pools. Splash areas and interactive fountains also pose a risk. Natural bodies of water, especially ponds and lakes, may be

5. Respect the ‘Old School’ Rules Make sure those newly independent teens know and follow the rules for driving safely — car accidents have a huge uptick in summer. Wear safety gear when biking, boating, skating or enjoying any other activity. Wear sunscreen every day and reapply often, especially when swimming or sweating outdoors. Never leave children alone or in the care of another child around water. At gatherings, assign an adult the specific job of focusing on the kids rather than socializing. IDA is the only school in South Florida to offer the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) instruction and certification. RAD is the most highly-regarded international educational training and examining organization in the world, under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 2019 close to 90 students from the Academy participated and obtained excellent results with a majority receiving the highest mark of Distinction. In 2018, five students from the Academy, who completed their final examination with Distinction, qualified to participate in the Adeline Genee International Dance Competition in Hong Kong. In previous years students have attended the Genee Competition in Scotland, South Africa and other locations around the world. At IDA, children are highly motivated and learn to have confidence in themselves. They are educated in ballet technique, mostly in the French language. They are exposed to magnificent music by the masters and experience the valuable lessons and excitement of performing on stage and all that goes into producing a professional quality ballet performance. IDA is proud to produce dancers who are

contracted to professional ballet companies immediately after graduation. Most graduates, on the strength of their dance ability, enter prestigious colleges and universities such as Notre Dame, Princeton, Yale, and Penn State, to mention just a few. It is an accepted fact that the discipline and dedication of a ballet student sets

them apart academically. Recently, faculty from IDA have obtained certification in Progressive Ballet Technique (PBT) which is an innovative strength training program developed by Marie Walton-Mahon for students to understand the depth of training muscle memory in achieving their personal best in classical ballet. Weston Encourages Student Participation in Local Government BY STACEY BOMSER

I

Photos courtesy City of Weston

t’s back to school season and the City of Weston is gearing up for another year of civic education. It will soon begin its “I Led the Pledge” program and welcome the Weston University Program Class of 2020. “It’s never too early to introduce children to local government and the role that local government plays in their daily lives,” explains Weston Communications Director Denise Barrett-Miller. “Engaging students in local government and civic education has become a long-standing tradition for the City of Weston.” All elementary schools (public, private and parochial) in the City of Weston are invited to participate in the “I Led the Pledge” program, which allows students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of a City Commission meeting. It’s up to the school to decide which students have the honor. In the past, the City has welcomed student council representatives, students of the month, contest winners, safety patrol officers, or any group the school wants to highlight. Meryl Jefferson’s fourth grade class from Manatee Bay Elementary is a longstanding participant. Following a lesson on the U.S. Constitutional Convention,

the students come dressed in period costume to recite the Pledge. BarrettMiller says the audience delights in seeing the children perform, adding that the entire “I Led the Pledge” program is something City officials look forward to each month. “We love having the kids come to the Commission meetings.” To commemorate their experience, students receive a Weston recycling tote with an “I Led the Pledge” t-shirt along with a special desk flag set with the U.S. flag and Weston flag, as well as literature about the City. The “I Led the Pledge” program is not the only way Weston welcomes student participation in local government. The Weston University program provides select high school students with a comprehensive look into how our local government operates. While the program has been around for over 20 years, Barrett-Miller says each year they bring a little more technology into the class with some online polling applications and things like that. This year, the City of Weston will start promoting Census 2020 in the schools and community. “It is so important that all children be counted,” expresses Barrett-Miller. “It turns out the greatest undercount is children under the age of five. An estimated five percent of kids under five weren’t counted in the 2010 Census, which is about one million children and babies. That means programs such as the National School Lunch Program and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) miss out on funding.”

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Bianca – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Annie or Bianca for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at: WindmillHealth@att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

Cleveland Clinic Weston Is First Hospital in Region to Offer New Treatment for COPD BY STACEY BOMSER

H

elp is on the way for the millions of Americans suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Cleveland Clinic Weston is leading the way. It is the first hospital in South Florida to offer a new lung valve treatment to patients with advanced respiratory conditions such as emphysema. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the procedure, which involves placing endobronchial valves in patients’ lungs to help them breathe easier. The treatment is performed during a bronchoscopy, which allows the physician to examine the inside of the lungs, including the bronchi (main airways into the lungs). Depending on the severity of the case, one to four tiny valves will be placed in the airways to block off the diseased parts of the lungs. The valves reduce hyperinflation by preventing air from being trapped in the diseased area and allowing the healthier parts of the lung to move more air, lifting pressure off the diaphragm. Rodolfo Blandon, M.D., President of Cleveland Clinic Weston, says it is an honor to have the hospital’s Pulmonary Medicine Department be the first to provide this revolutionary non-surgical treatment. “Offering this advanced lung treatment will significantly improve the overall quality of life for our patients.” Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term used

to describe progressive lung diseases such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, Sajive Aleyas, M.D., pulmonary and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. medicine Symptoms of COPD include increased physician performs the shortness of breath, frequent coughing, COPD lung valve increased breathlessness, wheezing and treatment for a patient during a tightness in the chest. bronchoscopy at Cleveland COPD is one of the most common Clinic Weston. diseases in this country. According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 12 million adults in the United States have been diagnosed with COPD, and an additional 12 million adults are thought to have undiagnosed COPD. It is a progressive and (currently) incurable disease that claims the lives of an estimated 120,000 people each year. While researchers work on finding a cure, treatments, such as this new lung valve procedure, can help COPD patients breathe better and manage the disease. Cleveland Clinic Weston is a nonprofit, multi-specialty, academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. The Weston hospital has more than 250 physicians with expertise in 55 specialties. The medical campus is fully integrated and includes diagnostic centers, outpatient surgery and a 24-hour emergency department located within the state-of-the-art hospital.

Pediatric Foot and Ankle Sprains May Be a More Complex Growth Plate Injury BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

I

njuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. X-rays can fail to provide a complete and accurate picture of the diagnosis. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present. Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of 13 and 18, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone. Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating. X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be

injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary. Treatment options include: 1. Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster it heals. 2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Nonweightbearing would be mandatory. 3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked. The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. Florida’s Unclaimed Property Program BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK any Floridians are unaware of Florida’s unclaimed property program. This program works to return claims lost or unknown funds to the rightful owners. The property consists of dormant accounts in financial institutions, insurance and utility companies, securities and trust holdings. Unclaimed property can also include tangible belongings such as jewelry, coins, currency, stamps, store items and other miscellaneous articles from abandoned safe deposit boxes. I am happy to report that during the last two years, the state has returned more than $717 million in unclaimed property to Florida families and businesses. This returned money not only benefits our citizens but also stimulates Florida’s economy by circulating additional discretionary income back into our local communities and businesses. I encourage everyone who has ever resided in Florida or has relatives who live or have lived in our state to visit www.FLtreasurehunt.org. The website has unlimited search functions which allow you to create and print claim forms for any account for which you are entitled. If you find a match and believe it is yours, you can print and complete a claim form and mail it to the department, or you can request a claim form be mailed to you. Each claim form includes instructions and lists the documentation required to prove the claim. When the contents of safe deposit boxes go unclaimed for years without an owner being found, the merchandise is appraised and sold at an unclaimed property auction, the proceeds of which are used to fund Florida’s schools. Should a property owner discover that he or she owned an item that was auctioned, the proceeds from the sale can be claimed any time at no cost. Unclaimed Property is a financial asset that is unknown or lost, or has been left inactive, unclaimed or abandoned by its owner. Unclaimed Property assets are held by business or government entities (holders) for a set period of time, usually five years. If the holder is unable to locate, re-establish contact with the owner and return the asset, it is reported and remitted to the Florida Department of Financial Services, Division of Unclaimed Property. The Department makes these accounts available in a searchable, interactive database, available free of charge, 24 hours a day, and allows claimants to initiate a claims process (with instructions) for accounts they believe they are entitled to claim. There is no statute of limitations on unclaimed property in Florida. Account owners, or their heirs, can claim their funds indefinitely. Until claimed, unclaimed funds are deposited into Florida’s school fund for the benefit of public education. There is no statute of limitations, however, and consumers have the right to claim their property at any time, at no cost. The next unclaimed property auction will be held this month in Orlando. August 23rd is the preview day and the auction will be on August 24th at the DoubleTree Orlando Airport. The event is open to the public.

Weston Students Recognized for Commitment to Community Service BY STACEY BOMSER

A

s a State Representative, two of Richard Stark’s highest priorities are education and serving our youth. To that end, each year he invites schools within his district to select the student recipient(s) of his Florida House of Representatives Community Service Award. Attending the graduation and awards ceremonies to present these awards is always a privilege and honor for Rep. Stark. “Recognizing youngsters for service to the community is one way to thank them for their efforts and to show their peers how important this is. These are our future leaders and members of service organizations such as Rotary and Kiwanis.” Rep. Stark says he is continually amazed by what

these students are able to accomplish. For example, Cypress Bay High School award winner Cristina Heilbron volunteers at a no-kill pet shelter every summer, while the two middle school recipients dedicate their time to helping others and raising awareness. Hannah Wagner, from Tequesta Trace Middle School, is active in ACEing Autism, a program that helps autistic children through tennis. Falcon Cove Middle School recipient Gabrielle Silverstein started her own organization, Gabby Gives 4 Epilepsy, which raises money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida. “Even at the fifth grade level, community service recipients participated in programs with organizations such as the Salvation Army and the Harvest Drive,” notes Rep. Stark. Everglades Elementary School recognized Kieran McManus and Manatee Bay Elementary chose Jayda Washington as the recipient of its House of Representatives Community Service Award. At Eagle Point Elementary, Rep. Stark bestowed the award on a group of students from Mrs. Garcia’s fifth grade class. The Rainbow Scouts

included Chloe Bertin, Kate Bretz, Bianca Cavero, Horus Chan, Sadie Grom, Mya Inoa, Melissa Johnson, Sarah Ojeda, Salome Perez, Sophia Ruiz and Sahana Seepersad. The children made bracelets, which they sold before and after school, and used the funds raised to purchase toys for Toys For Tots. During the awards ceremony, Rep. Stark called the Rainbow Scouts a group of exemplary students who have shown their leadership skills while supporting their favorite charity. “I believe that when students get involved in community service, they not only help others, but they also expand their worldview, develop empathy and leadership skills, and realize how their actions can have a positive impact.” Rep. Stark believes all of the Community Service Award recipients serve as inspiration to the community. “I love attending the award ceremonies. It’s rewarding for me to see the appreciation of the student recipients, their parents and their friends. We learn as adults what these students can achieve, and it helps us, the adults, want to learn and achieve more seeing what these youngsters are able to accomplish.”

Weston Library Offers Free College Readiness Workshops BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he college admissions process can be a stressful time for students and parents. The Weston Branch Library is hoping to ease some of that strain with a series of free Ready for College workshops scheduled for this month. “Applying for college is an exciting, but overwhelming, process. Therefore, it is important for families to acquaint themselves as soon as possible with the process,” notes Librarian Senior Keva Turner. “Ready for College workshops provide guidance to both teens and parents and lets them know what to expect during each step of the process.” Each workshop tackles a different part of the college application process: Scholarships and Naviance; Financial Aid Planning; and Applying for College. The program is facilitated by Broward Advisors for Continuing Education (BRACE) from Broward County Public Schools. BRACE Advisors work with guidance counselors throughout the school year to support students with career awareness and the college application process. “The workshops are a combination of lecture and hands-on format,” explains Ms. Turner. “The goal of each workshop is to have high school juniors and seniors complete, or at least start a part of the college application process. For the Financial Aid Planning

Workshop, parents are expected to bring the necessary documents required for filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). During the Applying for College Workshop, students have the chance to start a Common or Coalition application with a BRACE counselor in the room.” The Ready for College workshops are scheduled for the first three Saturdays in August, from 2-4pm. They are funded by the Broward Public Library Foundation. The Scholarships and Naviance Workshop will take place on August 3rd. During this program, students will learn how to effectively use Naviance, Broward County Schools’ college planning tool, to

search for scholarships and how to organize their search to find the best scholarships. During the Financial Aid Planning Workshop on August 10th, the presenter will explain the FAFSA, different types of aid, the do’s and don’ts of financial aid, and common terms to know about the process. This is a hands-on workshop during which students and families will leave with a completed financial aid application provided they bring all needed materials, this includes the student’s and parents’ Social Security Number, copy of 2017-2018 taxes, parents’ date of birth, and email address for both student and parent. The final step is the Applying for College Workshop on August 17th. This program will help students identify the best colleges for them based on academics, achievements/involvements and test scores. Students will receive step by step instructions on how to complete college applications and complete at least one application provided they bring an unofficial transcript or copy of Virtual Counselor’s Graduation Information with all courses listed, Social Security Number, and email address. Space is limited for the Ready for College Workshops; preregistration is required at www.broward.org/Library/Pages/ SATACTProgram.aspx. For more information call 954-357-5420.

New Principal Sails Into Cypress Bay BY STACEY BOMSER

E

xciting changes are in store at Cypress Bay High School this year, namely a new principal. After 20 years at the helm, Principal Scott Neely retired this past summer. Stepping into the leadership position is Kassandra Fried, who has served as Intern Principal for the past three years and worked at the school for 15 years in both teaching and administrative roles. Fried says that her prior experience has prepared her for this new position. “I was lucky enough to work side by side one of the best principals in the state and learn from him every single day. Mr. Neely gave me numerous opportunities to handle almost every situation and gave me the added confidence to run this school. As an Intern Principal, I was able to train for this new position every day for the past three years. I am ready!” Although confident, Friend acknowledges there will be challenges. “Working with almost 5,000 students and a staff of over 300 always has its challenges, however it is something that I am very familiar with and understand that no two students are alike, and our staff brings different strengths and qualities to their job. It will be important for me to try and give everyone the resources they need to

do their very best every day.” As a parent of four children and two stepchildren who have attended Cypress Bay, Fried brings a unique perspective to this administrative role. “As a parent, I can understand and relate to all of the excitement, opportunities and challenges that other parents feel as well.” Fried says her top priorities as principal are security and safety, social and emotional well-being, ensuring a smooth transition to high school, and maintaining high academic standards. Social and emotional education is one of her pet projects. During her time at Cypress Bay, Fried helped develop programs such as PASL (Personalization for Academic and Social and Emotional Learning), which focuses not only on making sure students are academically proficient, but ensuring their emotional needs are met and that the school is focused on their well-being to make them college, career and life ready. “I want to make it a priority for our students to come to school and for those seven hours be able to focus on learning,” explains Fried. “That means trying to assist them as much as possible with good mental health and working through some of the other issues that are affecting them negatively. I

Cypress Bay Principal Kassandra Fried

want students to feel they can be the best version of themselves at Cypress Bay and feel good about themselves every day.” Mr. Neely will work with Fried during the transition process. He feels confident he is leaving the Bay in good hands. “Her proficiency in four languages, building community relationships, academic instructional leadership, and strong rapport with students and parents make her the ideal candidate to lead the Bay.”

Eight Weston Students Named National Merit Scholars BY STACEY BOMSER

E

ight Weston students now belong to a very elite club, joining the likes of former Microsoft Corporation Chairman Bill Gates, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court Elena Kagan, Amazon Chairman and CEO Jeff Bezos, and Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan as National Merit Scholars. These Class of 2019 graduates from Weston are among 7,600 distinguished high school graduates who have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. Four students were named National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners: Cypress Bay High School graduate Viraj Maddur, NSU University School graduate Skylar Ronkin, Pine Crest School graduate Lauren Fromkin, and homeschooled student Sofia del Rio. There were 2,500 Merit Scholar designees nationwide chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. In addition, four Weston students received

college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. These awards provide recipients between $500 and $2000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing

the scholarship. Cypress Bay graduates Teresa Castano and Karaline Xia both received National Merit University of Florida Scholarships. Santiago Cadena, who attended Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School, received a National Merit University of Central Florida Scholarship. American Heritage School graduate AbdurRahman Dania received a National Merit University

of Miami Scholarship. About 4,100 students nationwide received college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships, which were presented by 173 institutions of higher education. The 2019 National Merit Scholarship program began in October 2017 when more than 1.6 million juniors from approximately 22,000 high schools took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as the preliminary screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring students in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists. About 15,000 students met the high academic standards and other requirements needed to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. The Scholars were evaluated based on academic record, including difficulty of subjects studied and grades earned, scores from two standardized exams, and contributions and leadership in school and community activities. Students also had to submit an essay and be endorsed and recommended by a high school official. In 2019, about 7,600 Finalists earned the prestigious Merit Scholar title and received a college scholarship. OURCITYMEDIA.COM | OUR CITY WESTON | AUGUST 2019 53

BY IVIS MATEOS chools today are embracing yoga and its benefits. Yoga has become an essential part of our curriculum and it is being incorporated more and more into public and private schools since it has been discovered that children can benefit greatly from its practice. Yoga helps children develop body awareness and have a handle on stress levels as we teach them to meditate, control their breathing and learn healthy body movements. Research has shown that children that practice yoga on a weekly basis build stronger concentration skills as well. It also helps with developing a positive self-image and more confidence in themselves. In the classroom, teachers and children both benefit from their yoga practice skills. Yoga helps educators have an alternative handle to challenges and allows for the integration of a healthy activity, releasing tensions through specific movements. The plank pose helps promote more flexibility and core power in the student’s body as well as helps release body tension. Self-regulating is essential for children as they begin to deal with different challenges in the classroom and away. Self-regulation is “the ability to flexibly activate, monitor, inhibit, persevere, and adapt one’s behavior, attention, emotions, and cognitive strategies in response to internal cues, environmental factors, and feedback from others” (Bergen-Cico, et al., 2015, p. 3448). A Child’s Pose is also a great pose for children to learn to feel their belly expanding as they are breathing in and out with the teacher’s instruction. Luckily, practicing yoga is something you can take anywhere. Teachers, parents as well as caregivers can benefit greatly from its benefits when they are at home, school, and even during travels and vacations. All it takes is a cozy corner and set intentions to spend the next few minutes, or an hour if you would like, embracing each move, each breath and the benefits it brings as you enjoy the time with your students or child. Namaste.

New Playtown Museum Offers Imaginative Fun for the Whole Family BY STACEY BOMSER

A

t Playtown Museum, children can exercise their minds and bodies. The unique indoor playground specializes in active, imaginary play. Owner Claudia Vasconcelos shares more about her concept and what Weston families can experience at the new Playtown Museum. Why did you develop Playtown Museum? As a mother of two, I felt something was missing in terms of family entertainment in this area. Spending quality time with my kids is a priority and I wanted to create a great educational and safe indoor place, where adults and children can experience fun, family time while creating lasting memories. Why is imaginative play so important? One of the most important things we must provide for our children to help them develop is an opportunity to use their imaginations to creatively play and problem solve. At Playtown Museum, we provide superior quality play and educational experiences for children, from birth to age six, and their families. They can engage in a variety of features and activities focused on pretend play. Please describe the facility. Playtown Museum is an open play area that simulates a traditional city main street. Each playhouse is filled with furni-

ture, toys and costumes to stimulate the child’s imagination, encouraging him/her to problem solve, make choices and refine their social skills. The playhouses include a family home, fire station, supermarket, animal hospital and more. In addition to the play village, Playtown Museum offers a toddler play area and a slide. In addition to open play, what does Playtown Museum offer? We will offer a variety of classes ranging from recycling and gardening to yoga and robotics. We also host special workshops for children and parents such as storytime, baby massage and positive parenting education. We have plans to offer special events for the holidays, as well as movie nights and pajama parties. Speaking of parties, do you offer birthday packages? Of course! Playtown Museum is perfect for families looking for a fun and special way to celebrate their child’s birthday. Our reasonably priced party packages include use of a private party space and play time. We take care of everything – and even provide the goodie bags. We also offer Baby Shower parties. What distinguishes Playtown Museum from other indoor playgrounds? Our place is unique because here children can pretend play and be whatever

Indian Trace Elementary School Spanish Club Strikes Gold BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Spanish Club is one of the most popular after-school programs at Indian Trace Elementary. Not only is it fun and educational, but also highly competitive. Throughout the school year, Spanish Teacher Beatriz Cuervo coaches the students as they prepare for Broward Schools’ annual World Language District Competition. This past school year, the school had 19 students compete and they all took home gold medals. “The results of their hard work,

dedication, passion and commitment was nothing but remarkable,” stated Señora Cuervo. Ella Peretz, Gabriel Mendez and Emma Beltz all won gold medals in the Declamation category, which required students to recite a poem in Spanish. Ella’s poem was dedicated to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, while Gabriel’s was inspired by author Nicomedes Santacruz. Emma chose to recite the popular children’s poem La Vaca Estudiosa (The Studious Cow), about a cow that wanted to go to school and, despite being told cows were not supposed to study, persevered and challenged those who opposed her. For the Skit category, six members of the Spanish Club performed a play based on the bestselling book by Chilean author Enrique Barrios, Ami, el Niño de las Estrellas (Ami, Child of the Stars). It’s about a young boy who is rude to a classmate, but then

befriends an extraterrestrial girl. She takes him to visit the moon and her planet. While in space, the boy learns several valuable lessons on humanity, the value of friendship, and environmental awareness. Congratulations to Anabella Sanchez, Camila Herrera, Daniella Aguirre, Sofia Pereira, Javier Sanchez and Adrian Alvarez for their stellar performance. Indian Trace Elementary also received gold medals in the Talent category. Students performed a beautifully choreographed dance to La Vida es Un Carnaval (Life is a Party), a famous salsa song performed by Celia Cruz. Congratulations to Nicholas DeMarco, Isaac Callaui, Maily Ortiz, Nicole Schoening, Kayis Yacinthe, Dahlia Benitez, Daniela Cordova, Bianca Torres, Alek Chaussky, and Victor Herrero. Señora Cuervo says she is extremely proud of all of her students and hopes they learned a lesson about the power of perseverance. “To see you being acknowledged for what you

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-4993 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com. Three Tequesta Trace Students Compete at National Debate Tournament BY STACEY BOMSER

embers of the Speech and Debate Team at Tequesta Trace Middle School are anxiously awaiting the start of the school year. They are hoping for another successful debate season, once again sending a team to the National Speech and Debate Association’s National Tournament. The school had three students compete at Nationals this past summer in Dallas; Martha Dwyer in Congressional Debate and Nicholas Foutch and

Gabriel Simpson in Policy Debate. “The students from the Tequesta Trace Debate Team traveled out of state for the first time in the school’s history to attend the NSDA’s National Tournament with eight other middle schools from Broward County,” states Speech and Debate Coach Lindsay Levine. She says the school’s team is small but growing and it is quite accomplished, having competed at Nationals twice. Nicholas and Gabriel competed as partners in Policy Debate, winning two rounds at the tournament. Ms. Levine explains that Policy Debate is a two-on-two style debate where students research and debate a specific topic, dealing with U.S. Policy, for the entire year. Nicholas and Gabriel had competed together since January and won four medals from Broward’s MAST tournaments, before qualifying for Nationals. Martha competed in Congressional Debate. Ms. Levine describes this form of debate as a mock legislature where students draft bills and resolutions, which they then debate before voting to pass into law. “At Nationals, Martha participated in the mock Congress with a docket of student-written bills,

including two she wrote herself,” shared Ms. Levine. She says she is extremely proud of her students and their accomplishments and hopes they will take this experience with them and consider pursuing debate in high school this coming year. “All three students had a great time meeting and competing against other students who are passionate about Speech and Debate from all over the country.” In addition to competing in the National Speech and Debate Association’s National Tournament, Ms. Levine says the students were able to watch the final rounds of the high school events and had the unique opportunity to tour Dallas. They viewed Dallas from the top of Reunion Tower, visited AT&T Stadium (home of the Dallas Cowboys), toured the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza (it chronicles the assassination of President John F. Kennedy), and visited the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

Multi-Talented Musician Writes for Stage, Screen and Symphony BY STACEY BOMSER

I

f everything continues to go her way, former Sound of Thunder Marching Band Drum Major Shelbie Rassler could go from Cypress Bay to “The Great White Way” (Broadway). As recipient of the prestigious Presser Foundation Scholar Award, Shelbie is pursuing her passion with plans to one day work as a professional musician in New York, composing, conducting, film scoring, performing and music directing. Shelbie is entering her senior year at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music. She believes she was chosen as the Presser Scholar because of her strong academic performance and active role as a collaborator in the music department. Her work outside the classroom and school is even more impressive. Shelbie’s passions include composing, film scoring and musical directing. She has scored several short films, including Titan: The Story of Space Oddity, which won the Grand Jury Award at the CampusMovie Fest, qualifying it for the Terminus Film Festival in Atlanta and possibly a screening at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival. One of her other recent credits was composing

music for the Lexus commercial, The Extra Mile. “I love collaborating with choreographers, directors and filmmakers, contributing to their exciting projects.” Shelbie is currently collaborating with her close friend, Harley Seger, on an original musical entitled Voices, which will be presented this fall in Boston. The musical is about a young woman named Maddie, and the specific moments in her life that made her the woman she came to be. “Harley wrote the book and lyrics and I wrote the music. We are incredibly excited to see the show brought to life,” shares Shelbie. “We are really excited that this female-driven story will also be produced by an entirely female-creative team.” In addition to these projects, Shelbie continues to orchestrate and record music through her company, Rassler Records, which got its start when she was attending Cypress Bay High School. “Back then, I had many friends who needed instrumental tracks for auditions and various competitions. As a multi-instrumentalist, I realized I had the abil-

ity to bring the sheet music to life and offer tracks, ranging from piano to fully orchestrated pieces, for my friends. Over time, I expanded this idea to a full company that now offers custom tracks, sheet music transposition, track editing and various other musical services.” Shelbie credits her experiences growing up in Weston with her success today. She played drums and saxophone in the Falcon Cove Middle School Band, and in high school was the Drum Major of the Sound of Thunder Marching Band. At Cypress Bay, the Wind Ensemble performed some of her original compositions, and she discovered her passion for film scoring during a media studies class. The Weston Music Society awarded Shelbie a scholarship to help pursue her music studies at the Berklee College of Music.

Weston Executive Named 2019 Hispanic Woman of Distinction BY STACEY BOMSER

M

arianela Collado is breaking the glass ceiling. As Chief Executive Officer and Co-Owner of Tobias Financial Advisors, she is one of few Hispanic women thriving in the male-dominated financial services industry. She will be recognized for her accomplishments this month at the Hispanic Women of Distinction luncheon. Collado is one of 12 honorees, selected from more than 60 nominations of Latina business leaders. The Hispanic Women of Distinction are chosen for their American entrepreneurship combined with a commitment to their core values and traditions. These women are considered role models and an inspiration to the next generation of Latin women. Collado says she is honored to have been selected, confirming that her efforts are being recognized. “When I think of what this award represents to me, it is about recognition. My efforts in my community are being noticed. As a CPA and holistic Certified Financial Planner, I hope to make an impact not only in the lives of my clients but my community. I’ve made significant contributions to help educate the Hispanic community on various financial planning techniques and opportunities.” She feels it is important to target the Hispanic community because it is one the fastest growing popula-

tions in the country. “Hispanics are building wealth at a much faster pace than any other demographic group. This is an opportunity for us to carve our niche and help serve the Latino community from their perspective.” Collado is equally committed to serving and empowering women. “What I find most fascinating is that we are so willing to support each other and lift each other up. I specifically run a women’s empower-

ment group called Women, Wealth, Wisdom and Wine, where our mission is to help empower each other in areas of not only financial wellness, but mental, physical, spiritual and, recently, environmental wellness.” As a Hispanic Woman of Distinction, Collado is recognized as a role model in the community, but what she says she takes greatest pride in is being a role model to her three sons. “I know they are watching my every move.” Collado lives her personal and professional life by a set of core values – integrity, passion, transparency, teamwork, community and family, to name a few. “I also believe in kindness and it multiplying itself,” she notes. “I always do right by people and genuinely care to actually help. I don’t think about ‘what’s in it for me’. I’m driven by the idea of actually looking out for people.” When not caring for her family, clients and colleagues, Collado serves on the Board of Gilda’s Club of South Florida and stays involved in her sons’ schools. It’s her way of giving back to the Weston community that she and her family love being a part of. The 2019 Hispanic Women of Distinction luncheon takes place on August 23rd at Signature Grand. The event benefits March of Dimes and Take Stock in Children. For more information go to www. HispanicWomenOfDistinction.com.

Why You Should Not Use Floaties BY MARCELLA MICIANO

S

ummer in South Florida is hot. One of the best ways to beat the heat is by taking a dip in the pool. Unfortunately, one very common pool product may be putting children at risk. Floaties, also known as water wings, are one of the most dangerous items your children can use while playing in the water. Here are some common misconceptions about floaties: My child plays and swims more confidently when they use floaties. Your child may have more confidence in the water because their floaties provide them with a false sense of security. Using floaties gives the child the feeling that they will always be able to float on their own or jump into the pool and rise to the surface without assistance. It is important to remember that a child can not differentiate between when they are using floaties and when they are not. Children should attend swim lessons to learn how to feel the water, buoyancy and their body working to keep them afloat. I always make sure my child’s floaties are securely on their arms. They’d never be able to take them off. Children can easily – and silently – take their floaties off and jump into the pool. It is nearly impossible for even the most responsible parent to hear their child remove floaties. While nothing can replace an attentive adult, or designated Water Watcher, keeping an eye on children playing in the pool, teaching children to swim without floaties will certainly make the water safer. I feel better knowing my child will always be at the surface of the water when they use their floaties. You feel this way because your child’s floaties are giving you a false sense of security. Here’s the problem – parents often become overly confident that their child is safe in the water when the reality is a child can remove their floaties in only a second if an adult looks away. I thought floaties were the safest option for a child who cannot swim or float on their own. Did you know that floaties are not Coast Guard approved? This means they are not meant to be used as a lifesaving flotation device. Floaties are a toy and should be treated the same as plastic watering cans, diving rings, and water guns. None of these toys can save a child’s life. Floaties are made with a weak plastic that can easily rip or tear on rough pool surfaces. They can easily become damaged while playing. Using a proper fitting life vest is the best option if your child needs a personal flotation device. Swimming lessons are the best way to keep your child safe at the pool. These lifesaving lessons provide far more security than floaties.

Weston Artist Wins National Calligraphy Contest BY STACEY BOMSER

A

rtist P.L. “Pat” Brooks has a unique way of looking at things. So, when she discovered that “Put Your Stamp On It” was the theme of the 2019 Graceful Envelope Contest she let her creative juices flow. Her artwork was selected as one of the winners. The theme was chosen to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Graceful Envelope Contest and the 125th anniversary of the United States Postal Service’s commemorative stamps. Artists were challenged to incorporate those events in their design. Brooks says that was not an easy task. “How do you make the scene on the envelope cohesive, but not so complicated that the message is lost? I thought that having a diverse cross-section of USPS postal workers holding banners and balloons, celebrating the anniversaries, would bring it all together.” Winners were selected based on hand lettering, creative interpretation of the theme, and effective use of color and design, including incorporation of postage stamp(s). Brooks used actual stamps for the flag balloons on her envelope. Although there is no prize for this contest, Brooks says she takes pride in knowing that her work was judged to be among the best in the world. “What you do get is basically a self-satisfaction that you could compete with professional calligraphers and artists

from around the globe and your envelope made an impact.” Brooks has entered the Graceful Envelope Contest for the last seven years. This was her second consecutive Winner award. She has also received four Honorable Mentions. She says she likes the challenge this contest offers. “As an artist, I like to be challenged. This format

has several rules that you need to follow, but then I am allowed to interpret how the final product will look,” she shares. “It’s a wonderful feeling to have it all come together successfully.” Brooks says she also enjoys the calligraphy challenge. “Calligraphy is very precise lettering. While that is certainly challenging on its own, having to incorporate it into a theme and scene doubles the challenge because you also have to consider the size and placement of the lettering.” This year’s contest was judged by retired White House Chief Calligrapher Pat Blair and two professional calligraphers. In addition to the Graceful Envelope Contest, Brooks has won many fine-arts awards. She is a charter member of the Weston Art Guild, as well as a member of the National League of American Pen Women and the Gold Coast Watercolor Society. She is known for her cartooning, hand lettering and Zentangle inspired artwork. To see more of her work, look at Instagram @plbrooks04.

The Difference ‘Why Not?’ Makes. Memory care guided by positivity, purpose, and passion. As we look back over our lives, it’s our experiences, career paths, and achievements that define who we are. But, just as someone’s arthritis or diabetes shouldn’t define who they are, neither should their diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s may slowly erode a person’s memories and cognitive skills, but, the core of a person’s identity and passions remain. The details of the past—and the words to express them—might be harder to conjure up now, but the ability to be genuinely happy and purposeful in the

moment are ever-present. Engagement is not only possible, it’s necessary to stave off further decline. So, when it comes to memory care in a community setting, the delivery of daily care must be just as one-of-a-kind as the people receiving it. That’s the basic foundation of The Artis Way— the unwavering philosophy of Artis Senior Living of Davie. The Artis Way is their refreshingly different approach to memory care—as it is in their 17 purpose-built sister communities. “When you change the way you operate from ‘we can’t do that!’ to ‘why not?,’ amazing things happen!” Part of Miriam’s job as Director of Partnership Development is to collaborate with families to learn every detail about their loved ones. “We take the time to get to know what will make your mom or dad, wife or husband smile when they walk in here. And we keep ourselves open to possibilities. We really try to give people back the lives they used to love—the aspects of them that their families thought were gone for good.”

The Artis staff genuinely loves to make the seemingly impossible possible—an exceedingly unusual operating standard in the field of senior living and memory care. Artis Senior Living prides itself on the moments they’ve been able to create for memory care residents and their families. Ronald, a former baseball coach, longed to play baseball again. So the Artis staff transformed a portion of the community into an indoor baseball diamond. The Artis staff planted rose bushes outside of the bedroom window for Mary, an avid gardener. George, a proud veteran, was welcomed on move-in day by an honor guard, National Guardsmen, and local legislators. Artis is proof that you can treasure each person’s uniqueness with dignified, individualized memory care. Because disease doesn’t define a person. Their indomitable spirit does. HEALTH & WELLNESS

If It Ain’t Broke... Make Certain! BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER e are all familiar with the statement: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” Perhaps you have even used it a few times yourself. However, these can be dangerous words if referring to one’s health. People who believe this about their health may be heading down a slippery slope to serious health problems. The “if it ain’t broke...” belief is founded on the notion that since pain usually means there is a problem, no pain must mean there’s no problem. Those that hold this view make decisions about their health based entirely on how they feel. Tragically, health care is littered with catastrophic examples demonstrating the naiveté of this belief. Heart disease and cancer are two extreme examples on a long list of conditions that can develop silently, with no symptoms. Back pain is one such condition. Remember the time you bent over and suddenly couldn’t move because of pain? That back problem didn’t just happen. Ninety percent of back and neck pain is a direct result of failure in management of spinal health. In other words, spinal pain is not the start of a problem, it is the end result. A spine can be dysfunctional (not working correctly) for months or years before any pain is felt, thanks to the body’s many compensating mechanisms. However, when the body runs out of ways to compensate, or the compensating mechanisms finally give up, the white flag goes up in the form of pain signals. Science is now telling us there is more to silent spinal dysfunction problems than even most health practitioners are aware. Spinal dysfunction is usually the result of postural distortion (imbalance), and abnormal spinal alignment and curvature. Those structural problems, together with the abnormal function they produce, have been shown to cause premature deterioration of the spine, as well as adverse effects on the nervous system. Indeed, the long-term health consequences of structural and functional problems of the spine can be profound, yet often unnecessary. Do not let pain be your guide. Instead, be proactive with regards to your spinal health. Book a chiropractic spinal check-up today. A better statement to live by is: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

The Facts About “Laughing Gas” BY DR. ALON GROSMAN

L

ike many parents in our community, I tend to approach the use of any medicine for my children with a discerning eye. What are the risks and benefits of its use? How long will it last in the system? Are there any side effects I should look for or take home instructions needed? It is for this reason, that I am happy to educate the public on the use and safety of Nitrous Oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) for use with the apprehensive pediatric dental patient, when indicated. It is first important to point out the very long history and safe track record of its use. Nitrous oxide (N20) was first discovered by Joseph Priestly in 1772. Interestingly, its use for the first 80 years was mostly for entertainment purposes receiving its current nickname “laughing gas”. In 1845, Horace Wells, a dentist from Hartford CT, demonstrated its use as an anesthetic during the extraction of a wisdom tooth at Harvard University. His work on nitrous oxide would eventually earn him the distinction of being the discoverer of anesthesia. Once accepted by the medical community, its method of delivery had been improved and in turn its impeccable safety record had become established. Nitrous oxide is a gas that is delivered through inhalation. Although early documentation showed safe delivery in its pure form, safety has increased exponentially with its combination with oxygen. The addition of oxygen assures

that there will be no decrease in oxygenation of the body throughout its use. New sophisticated equipment also assures desired concentrations by a titrating delivery mechanism, allows for rapid reversal, and disallows usage of more than 70% nitrous gas. The combination with oxygen has not only made the use of nitrous safer, but has also made its use more versatile. Its first use was prior to the discovery of the local anesthetic, lidocaine. For this reason, it was administered at higher concentrations in order to achieve some form of anesthesia (relief of pain). In the dental environment, it is given at a much lower dosage (much lower than the recommended limit) in order to achieve anxiolysis, or reduction of anxiety. Its safety record at these lower doses is impeccable. In the 1970’s, H. Ruben had documented 3 million cases of its use for dentistry without adverse reaction. In answer to my initial questions, nitrous oxide is a safe and odorless inhalant, which exits the body immediately after removal. The only routine recommendation we give is no ingestion of food or drink 60 minutes prior to its use to eliminate chance of nausea. Although we prefer to treat our patients without the need of an anxiolytic, Nitrous Oxide remains a perfect alternative for pediatric patients who may otherwise have a “bad experience”. Negative experiences in youth have been shown to create long term dental anxiety lasting into adulthood for some dental patients. It is for this reason, that over 80% of all pediatric dentists report using it in their practice.

How to Become a Rotarian BY PAT SHORT HORNSBY, ROTARIAN

T

he second most common question we Rotarians hear after “What is Rotary?” is “How do I become a Rotarian?” The truth is you may already be a “Rotarian” at heart. Because membership in Rotary is by invitation, we need to meet you and you need to meet us to make it official. A Rotarian is a person who sees a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves. Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders and problem-solvers who have banded together to form Rotary clubs to take that action. The Rotary Club of Weston is an enthusiastic, positive, diverse group of professionals and community leaders who use their time, talent and vocational resources to improve the lives of others here in South Florida and around the world. Ethics play a large role in the Rotary world, with a Rotary Code of Conduct calling on members to act with integrity and deal fairly with others in matters both personal and professional. Family is also important, both from the standpoint of Rotary welcoming individuals’ family members at events, and the warmth extended within the group. We call it the Family of Rotary. Rotary clubs plan service projects, work with charities and humanitarian organizations, provide opportunities for youth, assist elders, honor veterans and heroes, fight disease and poverty … the list is long. Whatever the passion, there is very likely a group of like-minded Rotarians ready to welcome a new co-visionary. In addition to connecting with other leaders who are changing the

ASK THE EXPERT

Large or Small, We Top ALL!

Keeping an Eye on Your Visual Health BY DR. JANE THERRIEN he eye is arguably the most intricate and distinguishing feature in our bodies. It contributes to making each of us undeniably unique. It is second to the brain in being the most complex organ, yet each weigh just under an ounce. One example of the amazing intricacy of the eye is the cornea, the outer most layer. The cornea is composed of tissue which contains no blood. This blood-less tissue (the only tissue of its kind) allows light into your pupil. One deep anatomical dive and you would find that the cell structures within our eyes -- for example, rod-shaped cells allow us to see shapes, and cone-shaped cells allow us to see color -- are just as unique as our fingerprints. In fact, a fingerprint is made of 40 unique characteristics, but an iris has 256! This sophistication makes it important to “keep an eye” on your optic health. The most common eye syndrome, at roughly three million U.S. cases per year, is dry eye. An adequate and consistent layer of tears on the surface of the eye is essential to keep your eyes healthy, comfortable and seeing well. There are different categories of dry eye, depending on which component is affected. For example, if the meibomian glands don’t produce or secrete enough oil (meibum), the tear film may evaporate too quickly – a condition called “evaporative dry eye”. A common symptom of dry eye includes a foreign body sensation – the feeling that grit or some other object or material is “in” your eye. And as odd as it may sound, watery eyes also can be a symptom of dry eye syndrome. This is because dryness on the eye’s surface sometimes will over-stimulate production of the watery component of your tears as a protective mechanism. Thankfully, there are effective treatment options if you suffer from chronic dry eye. In many cases, routine use of preservative free artificial tears, as well as minor behavioral modifications (taking frequent breaks during computer use, for example) can significantly reduce dry eye symptoms. If you’re not experiencing any visual problems or eye discomfort, it may be hard to rationalize a trip to your eye doctor. “What’s the big deal?” you may be thinking. “I can see fine. I don’t need an eye exam.” While that may well be the current case, you want that to be the case for years to come. The majority of eye diseases are asymptomatic until they reach later stages and become serious, threatening overall vision. A comprehensive annual eye exam will allow your eye doctor to evaluate the health of your eyes and make recommendations based on their current state.

LEGALLY SPEAKING AWARDED 9 YEARS

The Issue of Private School BY EVAN BARON his time of year parents are often planning for school for next year. If the child is in public school and he/she is remaining in the same school there usually are no issues to be discussed. If however, one or both of the parents are considering private school certain issues may arise. What school will we enroll the child in? Who will pay for the expense? Is private school even to be considered? If so, will it be religious based? These are some of the questions which often need to be addressed. If the parties have already entered into a Marital Settlement Agreement and Parenting Plan, and there is a provision which states that the minor child(ren) will attend private school; than the parties were wise enough to plan ahead and resolve the issue before it became a topic of litigation. Of course, there still maybe the question of which school will they attend? Often times it depends on cost, distance from home and obviously the schools reputation. It would seem that parents, even divorced parents, could decide what is best for their children. Of course this is not always true. If private school was not originally agreed to, then an Agreement must be worked out between the parties. Private school is not a right, but rather it is a privilege. There are public schools which will provide an education free of charge. In most instances a parent cannot be forced to pay for private school. If however certain conditions exist, the Courts could rule otherwise. For example; if a child has been attending private school for many years then a judge may not want to disturb the child’s education. Of course, this is very much contingent upon the affordability of private school as well as the parent’s ability to contribute. If one of the parent’s do not have the financial means to pay than the other parent could certainly agree to pay 100% of the costs. This however, will not be considered a substitute for a child support obligation. The other issue is whether there is the necessity for private school. Many children have special needs due to learning disabilities or perhaps ADHD. The public schools often do not have the resources to provide for these children. Private school maybe the only answer to insure that they receive the care and education they require. What if one of the parents refuses to enroll the child in a private school and the other parent cannot afford it? Will the courts put the child’s needs first? The law says that in certain cases a judge can order a parent to pay for private school, even if he/she objects. This will only occur if it can be proven that the public school system cannot accommodate the child and the refusing parent has the financial means to contribute. If it is too great a hardship the court’s hands maybe tied. Based upon Florida’s “Shared Responsibility” laws, decisions about school should be a joint decision. Neither parent should take it upon himself/ herself to decide without discussion. As in most instances, a few minutes of constructive dialogue can save hours of litigation.

TEE TO GREEN

Successful Fairway Bunker Shots BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL

W

hen it comes to hitting out of a fairway bunker, there are three steps to success: Step 1: Evaluate the Lie Very seldom do you draw a flat lie in the bunker. If, for example, the ball is well above or below your feet, then consider wedging it out onto the fairway or laying up to a favorite distance that will leave you with a full shot into the green. Ask yourself where you’re most comfortable hitting your next shot from. If it’s 100 yards, then lay up to that distance. Don’t attempt to hit it as far as possible because you could find yourself in more trouble or with a very difficult partial shot into the green. Also consider the height of the lip and the ball’s proximity to it. If your ball comes to rest a foot from the face of the bunker and the lip is several feet high, you have no other option but to pitch out with your highest-lofted wedge. If you do have room, then select a club that’s going to produce enough loft for the ball to clear the lip, even if you miss-hit it just slightly. If you’re not sure your 7-iron has enough loft to clear the lip, then stand on the face of the club outside the bunker so that the grip end of the club points skyward. The angle of the shaft equates fairly well to the launch angle and trajectory that this club will produce, provided you return the club with the same loft you started with at address. Do not do this inside the bunker as you would incur a 1-stroke penalty for grounding the club inside a hazard. Step 2: Inch Closer to the Ball With a mid-iron, play the ball in the center of your stance and grip down on the club about an inch. (Short irons should be played just back of center.) Most golfers will swivel their feet into the sand just a little to help with balance, so you need to grip down to avoid taking too much sand behind the ball. You’re better off catching the ball a little thin than sticking the clubhead in the sand. It also helps to stand closer to the ball, as that steepens your angle of approach and makes it easier to contact the ball first. The farther you stand from the ball, the shallower your attack angle is going to be and the more likely you are to hit the sand behind the ball. Focus your eyes on the front of the ball, and not the back as you would on most full swings. Step 3: Take Some Sand Most golfers try to pick the ball out of the sand from fairway bunkers, not disturbing a single grain in the process. In my experience, however, I think amateurs are better off hitting down on the ball—just like an iron shot—contacting the ball and then the sand. You have to be highly skilled to pick it, whereas if you take some sand after the ball you’re giving yourself a little extra margin for error. As you swing the club back and through, focus on maintaining the height of your sternum and your knee flex. This encourages your lower body to stay quiet, so that the bottom of your swing is more likely to occur at the ball or slightly ahead of it. Keep your hip turn to minimum on the backswing. If you stop rotating your body, then the club head is going to go straight into the sand. The Value of Fat in Cosmetic Surgery BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long-lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants is not applicable, because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting-edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells, as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and has achieved the award Black Diamond with Allergan. As a Black Diamond Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Messa is in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume.

PET CARE

Gastrointestinal Parasites in Dogs and Cats BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM Gastrointestinal (GI) parasites include any parasites that live in the stomach or intestines of a host. A variety of GI parasites affect dogs and cats. They range from roundworms and tapeworms, which are visible with the naked eye, to microscopic organisms like coccidia and Giardia. Regardless of their size, GI parasites can cause serious illness and sometimes even death in pets. Some parasites are zoonotic, which means humans can become infected. The following are the most common GI parasites in pets: ▸▸ Roundworms: Roundworms are visible with the naked eye and resemble small pieces of spaghetti. ▸▸ Hookworms: These worms attach to the intestinal wall and suck blood and other nutrients from their hosts. Hookworms can cause severe blood loss and diarrhea in infected pets. ▸▸ Tapeworms: Tapeworms are long, flat worms that are actually made up of numerous segments; each segment contains tapeworm eggs. ▸▸ Giardia: Giardia organisms are single-celled parasites that live in the intestines. Fecal-contaminated water, food, or soil can be sources of infection. ▸▸ Coccidia: Coccidia are microscopic GI parasites. They can cause severe diarrhea in some infected pets. ▸▸ Whipworms: Whipworms live in the large intestines of dogs and shed eggs into the environment. Female whipworms can produce over 2000 eggs daily, and environmental contamination can persist for years. How Do Pets Become Infected With Gastrointestinal Parasites? In most cases, eggs or infective stages of GI parasites are shed in the host’s fecal material. Once parasites are in the environment, other pets can be exposed

through direct contact with feces or exposure to soil, water, or plants that have been contaminated with feces. Some GI parasites can remain in the environment for months to years. Tapeworms are slightly different in that they can be transmitted by fleas. The immature stage of the tapeworm lives inside the flea. When a pet grooms a flea off of its hair, it eats the flea (and the tapeworm). The tapeworm then hatches inside the pet and continues its life cycle. What Are the Clinical Signs of Gastrointestinal Parasites? Diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss can be among the clinical signs of GI parasite infection. However, many infected pets don’t show any clinical signs at all. The best way to tell if your pet is infected is to have him or her tested for parasites. What Is Deworming? Deworming involves administering (or in some cases, applying) medication to treat and control infections with GI parasites. Because puppies and kittens are commonly infected with GI parasites, many veterinarians routinely deworm these young patients several times. Fecal testing can detect GI parasites in most cases, but parasites are not detectable all the time. Even if testing does not confirm parasites, your veterinarian may recommend deworming as a precaution. This is not harmful to your pet. Deworming medications come in a variety of formulations, including pills, chewable tablets, topical spot-on products that are applied to the skin between the shoulder blades, and liquid medications given by mouth. Your veterinarian can recommend the most appropriate deworming medications for your pet. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1.
