We can decide whether to change the direction of our country or keep it the same. The easiest and best way to ensure we retain our personal and economic liberty is to participate in elections. Each of us can make an equal impact on how our country, state, county and city is governed, regardless if you are a Democrat or Republican, or a liberal or a conservative. new school year brings opportunities to learn new skills. The Weston Community Center offers a variety of programs for children and teens, with classes for all ages and interests. The fall schedule features activities focused on academics, athletics and the arts. After a highly successful first year, Code Explorers is back with two classes with two levels each. Game Design & Programming Level 1 runs September 11 through October 30. During the eight-week session, children will learn and explore computer science and basic programming with game design. Students will have use of a take-home tablet. Students can then advance to Level 2, which takes place from November 6 through December 18. This program builds upon the techniques learned in Level 1, focusing on scenes, transitions and collision builds. Participants must have an Android 4.4 or above tablet. There is also a PK Coding class. In Level 1, aspiring young coders, ages four and five, will learn the basics of simple machines and robotic movements. or many active adults in our community, the Weston Community Center is a gathering place where they can make new friends and develop new skills. “The Community Center provides a space for residents to connect, learn and grow,” states Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation. “Opportunities for learning are available to everyone.” Adults can get in touch with their artistic side in the Watercolor Painting class. Award-winning watercolorist Rolande Mooreland teaches the vocabulary of colors, shapes, composition and preliminary drawing, as participants work to complete their personal work of art. Seniors have the opportunity for social interaction and recreation through the Weston Community Center’s partnership with the Weston 55+ Club. This group meets weekly for a wide variety of activities, such as board

game days, luncheon outings, movie afternoons, lectures and other events. The group has even gone on overnight trips to tour other parts of Florida. Membership is $50 for the year. All fitness levels can participate in the Posture and Alignment Class. Taught by Physical Therapist and Posture Alignment Specialist Randee Englehard, BS, MPT, PAS, this class is designed to correct posture and promote proper alignment and active muscle engagement that can reduce or eliminate pain. The class is offered on Sunday and Thursday mornings. Participants can choose to attend one or two classes per week for the eight-week session. The Adult Karate program is ideal for those seeking strength, conditioning and flexibility. This USA Goju Karate class focuses on the basic principles of self-defense, kata, fighting, and weaponry. confidence and self-esteem. Sixth-degree Black Belt David Schopp has been teaching this karate program in Weston since 1997. Class is offered either Monday or Wednesday nights. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Weston University Police Services Academy Provides Lessons in Law Enforcement BY STACEY BOMSER

through observation, participation, and interaction with BSO employees and special guest lecturers. “We run this program to give the children in our city the opportunity to see what BSO has to offer,” explains Crime Prevention Deputy Kari Pallotto, who coordinates the program. “We want to teach them what BSO does for the Weston community.” During the seven-week, hands-on program, Police

Services Academy students participated in a variety of programs and activities. Lessons and lectures were held on Monday nights, while field trips were planned for Tuesdays. Deputy Pallotto says the class visited the jail, SWAT team, BSO’s aviation and marine patrol, the BSO gun range at Markham Park, and they met with Federal Air Marshalls. In addition, there were lectures from the traffic homicide unit, the DUI unit, and crime scene investigators. “The children get to learn about different units within BSO, so they can see what career opportunities they could aspire to,” states Deputy Pallotto. She says she was particularly inspired by the number of girls taking part in this summer’s program. “It’s important to introduce girls to law enforcement, so they can see what they can do when they grow up.” Deputy Pallotto says the Police Services Academy is always a popular program with students. “They love it. The parents wish they could go through it.”

The curriculum focuses on local and state government, law enforcement services, community services, fire and EMS services, development services: planning and zoning as well as engineering, then technology and finance. Program days are made up of instruction, conversations, observations and hands-on activities exposing students to the numerous City services and functions provided to Weston residents. The program culminates with a simulated City Commission meeting where students utilize the knowledge they have gained throughout the program year to present and/or defend their side of several agenda issues. The program may also include a one-day trip to Washington DC, so students can better understand the relationship between municipal and federal government. The Weston University program is open to Weston students attending Cypress Bay High School, The Sagemont School, and Western High School. The class size is limited to 20-24 students and BarrettMiller says preference is usually given to juniors and

igh school students with an interest in local government are encouraged to apply to be part of the Weston University Class of 2019. The one-of-a-kind program provides a unique civic education in which participants learn about state and local government; in particular, Weston’s municipal government. Developed in 2002, Weston University was originated by City Manager John Flint. Its curriculum was developed by Denise Barrett-Miller, Director of Communications for the City of Weston. “Only through promoting an informed citizenry can we ensure effective governance and civic health,” explains Barrett-Miller. “The Weston University program is Weston’s approach to providing students a civic education that includes a very personal experience through open communication with elected officials and city department personnel. Students are exposed to a variety of career paths in both the public and private sector.” The Weston University program begins in October during Florida City Government Week. Over the course of the school year, students spend one day each month interacting with city leaders and

seniors, but sophomores can apply. All interested students must submit an essay entitled “Communities Need Leaders.” Application information for the Weston University Class of 2019 can be obtained at each school. Meet Weston’s New District Fire Chief

n July, Weston welcomed Todd Draizin as the new BSO District Fire Chief. The City of Weston contracts with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services for fire and emergency medical services. Chief Draizin replaces Chief Bruce Angier, who has taken another assignment within BSO. Chief Draizin says he is excited to bring his vast experience to Weston. “With over 30 years of experience, I look forward to being given the opportunity to bring that knowledge and expertise to Weston in order to maintain its high

standards of public safety.” Prior to joining BSO, Chief Draizin spent 32 years with Sunrise Fire Rescue. His firefighting career began in 1984 as a volunteer for BSO Fire Rescue and Emergency Services. In 1986, he started his professional career as a firefighter for the Sunrise Fire Rescue Agency, while earning his license as an Emergency Medical Technician/ Paramedic. During his tenure with Sunrise Fire Rescue, Chief Draizin worked his way up from Firefighter/ Paramedic to Driver Operator to Fire Captain, then Acting Battalion Chief and, finally, Deputy Fire Chief. As District Fire Chief for Weston, Chief Draizin would like to continue to grow the relations between BSO and the community. “The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue Services has always enjoyed a robust relationship with Weston and as leader in the Fire Rescue industry. Weston Recognized as 2018 Healthy Community Champion BY STACEY BOMSER

The Florida Department of Health has recognized this, naming the City of Weston as one of its 2018 Healthy Community Champions. According to the Florida Department of Health, nearly two out of every three adults in Florida are at an unhealthy weight. Furthermore, obesity is an epidemic across the country. Obesity increases the risk of many serious health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and cancer. The Healthy Community Champions Recognition Program was created to encourage Floridians to live a healthier lifestyle. “I am pleased to recognize local communities who have shown a special commitment to improving the health of their residents,” said State Surgeon General and Secretary Dr. Celeste Philip. “Their efforts to implement policies that empower residents and visi-

The City of Weston offers an abundance of amenities for residents of every age and lifestyle. From athletic fields to jogging paths to shaded playground facilities, it’s easy to get fit and stay healthy in our hometown. At 102 acres, Weston Regional Park is the City’s flagship park. It offers lighted athletic fields for football, soccer and lacrosse, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, a skate park, and miles of jogging and biking paths. Tequesta Trace Park and Vista Park are also heavily utilized by local sports leagues. One of the city’s oldest and most beloved parks is Peace Mound Park. On many beautiful days, residents can be found walking the tranquil waterfront paths learning about Weston’s historical significance. The Weston Sports Alliance manages the City’s popular athletic leagues. Approximately 9,000 athletes participate in six sports programs: baseball/softball/t-ball; basketball; football; lacrosse; rugby; and soccer. Residents also have access to the Weston Tennis Center. The Cliff Drysdale Tennis facility features 15 hydro-clay courts and one championship hard court. Weston is a cyclists’ paradise. A series of green bicycle signs on the pavement along Bonaventure Boulevard clearly designate a safe space for cyclists. There are also special bicycle crossing signals installed at intersections on Saddle Club Road. No wonder Weston was designated a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. In addition to working to make the roads safer for bikers, the City of Weston strives to make cycling safer and more enjoyable. It has installed Fixit Bike Repair stations in Weston Regional Park, Emerald Estates Park, Gator Run Park, Peace Mound Park and Library Park. At these stations, bikers will find the tools necessary to perform basic bike repairs and maintenance. Health and fitness are the focus at the annual Run For Tomorrow, sponsored by the City of Weston and Rotary Club of Weston. The charitable run includes a 5K and half marathon, followed by the free Fitness & Health Festival. The Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge One-Mile Family Health Walk draws a huge crowd, with students and families from all Weston elementary schools competing to see which school will win the coveted Mayor’s Challenge Cup and cash prize. BY PHYLLIS SCARBERRY s I peruse the latest market statistics for Weston, I am astounded that the months of inventory for the entire city for all price ranges is just 3.4 months. That means, if we did not take another listing and only sold what was currently listed, it would take 3.4 months to sell it all. The average list price is $751,000 and the average sold price is around $515,000, which is up a point over last year. The average price per square foot is around $215. The average days on market is barely 60 days, and homes are selling within 95% of their originally listed price. The number of homes for sale is down 9.8% compared to last year and number closed is up 1.6%. Homes with contracts are up 13.2% over last year. Is it any wonder we have only 3.4 months of inventory? The under million-dollar-market is still the sought-after price point. The luxury market has around 14 months of inventory and is staying on the market about 200 days. The great news is: Florida is still the most attractive place to live – especially to foreign buyers. According to NAR’s recently published “Profile of International Homebuyers Report,” Florida remained the major destination (19%), although it accounted for a smaller fraction of international clients, given the decline in Latin American and Canadian buyers. The report went on to state: ▸▸ Foreign buyer purchases of Florida residential properties increased to $24.2 billion ($19.4 billion in 2016). This accounted for 21% of Florida’s residential dollar volume of sales (19% in 2016). Nationally, foreign buyers comprised 10% of the dollar volume of existing home sales. ▸▸ Foreign buyers purchased 61,300 residential properties (47,000 in 2016), which made up 15% of Florida’s residential market (12% in 2016). Nationally, foreign buyer residential purchases accounted for 5% of existing-home sales. ▸▸ The median purchase price among foreign buyers increased to $259,400 ($252,500 in 2016), in line with the overall increase in the median price of Florida’s existing home sales of $220,100 ($211,500 in 2016). The median price among foreign buyers was 18% higher than the median price of Florida’s existing home sales. ▸▸ Latin American and Caribbean buyers accounted for the largest fraction of Florida foreign buyers at 34%, although they comprised a smaller share compared to the previous year’s share (39%). On the other hand, the share of buyers from Canada increased to 22% (19% in 2016). The share of buyers from Europe was unchanged, at 23%, as well as the share of buyers from Asia, at 10%, and the share of buyers from Africa, at 1%. While foreign buyers purchased property across the state, 53% landed in Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach (our tri-county area). Weston is comprised of about 27 square miles with a population of 66,603. Weston remains Florida’s top destination for both local and foreign buyers alike. NFL Players Offer Sports and Life Skills Advice at YMCA Sports Extravaganza BY STACEY BOMSER

ore than 400 campers got the chance to meet and practice their football skills with NFL players during the South Florida YMCA Sports Extravaganza, which was held at the Weston YMCA Family Center. Buffalo Bills Running Back and South Florida native Travaris Cadet hosted the event, along with teammate John Miller, who is also from Miami. The event began with a roll call of campers from the Weston, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood and South Dade YMCA’s, followed by a warm welcome address from Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer. Cadet then addressed the crowd of eager youngsters. He shared a story about his dream of becoming a professional football player and stressed the importance of

developing a strong work ethic early on in life. After the opening remarks and inspirational speeches, the campers were divided into smaller Mayor Daniel groups to take part in a series of skills clinics. The Stermer with Buffalo Bills Running Back activities focused on agility, speed, coordination, Travaris Cadet teamwork and creativity. The campers were all “Kids are the future and need to be surrounded by menexcited to learn new skills from the NFL athletes. Cadet and his friends also spent time mentoring the tors that lead them on the path of success.” This was the second year the Weston Y hosted the children, stressing the importance of leading a healthy Sports Extravaganza. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 764 children have died from heatstroke caused from being left in hot cars since 1998. Heatstroke in vehicles is the leading cause of all non-crash related fatalities involving children 14-yearsold and younger. Children under the age of four are at a greater risk since their bodies overheat more quickly. Florida ranks second in the United States in the number of hyperthermia deaths caused by children left in vehicles, and South Florida leads the state. The most dangerous mistake a parent or caregiver can make is to think that leaving a child in the car could never happen to them or their family. Even great parents can forget a child in the back seat, it can happen to anyone. The car’s interior temperature can increase up to 20 degrees in 10 minutes. Cracking the window or even opening the window several inches is no match for the rising temperature. Children are not the only ones who can suffer from heatstroke, the elderly and your family’s pet are also at risk. According to the Centersw for Disease Control (CDC), older adults do not adjust well to sudden changes in temperature and are more likely to have chronic medical conditions which require them to take medication that may affect how they adjust to temperatures. A pet’s coat is great for keeping them warm, but our South Florida climate makes it a challenge for your pet to remain cool. The increased temperature of your car interior is no match for your dog’s ability to remain cool which is primarily achieved through panting. There a few simple steps you can take to ensure the safety of your family and your family’s best friend. ▸▸ Place a reminder in plain view, such as a stuffed animal or other item, when your child is in the back seat to remind you to check the back seat before you leave the car. ▸▸ Leave your purse, briefcase or other personal item in the back seat forcing you to look in the back seat before you leave the vehicle. ▸▸ If someone else is driving your child, or your daily routine has been altered, always check to make sure your child has arrived safely. Set a reminder to call your child’s school or daycare to ensure they have arrived and are safe. ▸▸ Your car is not a playground. Keep your vehicle locked when not in use. Not only will you be protecting your child from accidently getting locked in a hot car, you help prevent unwanted burglaries. ▸▸ Act fast if you see a child or pet locked in a vehicle. Call 9-1-1 and take action if they appear to be in distress or unresponsive. ▸▸ Before leaving your car, “look before you lock” and make sure that you have not left any unintended cargo behind. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Summer Scholar Program Exposes Local Students to Medical Professions BY STACEY BOMSER

leveland Clinic Florida’s Summer Scholar program provides aspiring physicians with a firsthand look at the practice of medicine in a hospital and clinical setting. The program, which is geared toward high school seniors and college premed students, exposes students to different careers in medicine and the path to achieve them. “Cleveland Clinic Florida has a strong commitment to medical education and research,” states Dr. Dana Sands, staff surgeon in the Department of Colorectal Surgery, director of the Colorectal Physiology Center, and Summer Scholar Program physician liaison. “We believe that as an integral member of the community, it is important to offer educational opportunities to foster interest in the field of medicine and secure the future of our discipline.” This past summer, 110 students participated in the Summer Scholar program. Cypress Bay Senior Kavya Sarin was one of them. “During my time at the program, I was able to visit various departments across Cleveland Clinic and shadow a variety of medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, technicians, and therapists,” states Kavya. “Even though I was already interested in medicine before the program started, the firsthand

experiences that I had at Cleveland Clinic have provided me with a more concrete understanding of how a hospital works and the unique characteristics of different specialties and departments.” Throughout the program, students are exposed to many clinical areas including Internal Medicine, Radiology, Emergency Medicine, the operating room, as well as many sub-specialties. “The students get an unfiltered look at the practice of medicine including all of the triumphs and challenges that accompany each of us daily,” explains Dr. Sands, who participated as Cleveland Clinic Florida’s first summer intern, a Summer Scholar precursor, in

1993. “They get to see and experience the rewards of being a physician and also learn about the dedication and effort that the path entails.” Kavya says after spending six weeks at Cleveland Clinic she is now even more confident about her career choice. “The program has furthered my interest in the medical field.” She was particularly inspired by her experience shadowing Dr. Giovanna DaSilva, a colon and rectal surgery specialist, and observing her perform surgery. “I was happy to see that both the lead surgeon and her assists were female,” shares Kavya. “Having role models in the medical field is especially important for young women because of the long history of gender discrimination in medicine. After recognizing how the progressive nature of Cleveland Clinic was reflected by my experience that day, I was inspired to write my presentation about how the role of women in the surgical field has changed throughout history.” The Summer Scholar program concludes with a case presentation by each student. The GoChip is a small, rechargeable device, about the size of a mini-flashlight, that holds an entire season of a television series and beams the content to personal devices without an Internet connection. It can be used with PC and Mac laptops, as well as iOS and Android mobile devices. “Libraries are increasingly turning to streaming options to provide state-of-the-art services to our customers,” states Director of the Broward County Libraries Kelvin Watson. “The GoChip in an innovative solution that addresses needs such as portability and access anywhere and everywhere. It complements our existing collections and also helps us bridge the community’s digital divide.” Broward County Libraries is the first library system in Florida, first in the Southeast, and one of the first 12 libraries in the country to offer the GoChip

to patrons. Currently, the Weston Branch Library is one of 15 Broward County Libraries to have the GoChip. Library patrons can check out a GoChip just as they do any other library material. With a Broward County Library Card, the GoChip can be borrowed for seven days and may be renewed twice, two days at a time, for a total of eleven days. At this time, Broward County Library offers 20 TV shows, each with a full season of episodes, on GoChip. This includes family-friendly programs such as Angry Birds, The Goldbergs and The Spectacular Spider-Man. There is also content for a mature audience with shows such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Outlander, and The Shield. With GoChip, you can even watch popular shows from the past, including Community, Franklin & Bash, and Rescue Me. The Weston Branch Library is also pleased to participate in the Veterans Connect Hotspot Program. Veterans, active-duty members of the military and their dependents can check out these small, portable internet hotspots that provide free, unlimited access to T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network.

The free hotspots will be loaned for one month to veterans, active military members and their dependents with valid Military ID (Veterans Identification Card, Active Duty ID Card, Guard/ Reserve Military ID Card, Retiree Military ID Card, Military Dependent ID Card) or a Driver’s License with a “V” designation. Users then have the option to renew the loan three more times. The purpose of the Veterans Connect Hotspot Program is to assist veterans in transitioning to civilian life by encouraging education, selfdevelopment and career advancement through technology. It also encourages the use of Broward County Libraries’ vast resources and services by members of the military community.

dults and teens can learn a new language at the Weston Branch Library. An American Sign Language class for beginners begins this month. The free program is presented by The Bridge Outreach for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and is sponsored and paid for by the Friends of the Weston Branch Library. The mission of The Bridge Outreach is to break down communication barriers by creating awareness about the deaf community and the importance of learning American Sign Language (ASL). Through its programs, the organization also introduces the hearing community to deaf culture. By doing so, it is bridging the communication gap between the deaf and hearing communities. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, ASL is a complete, complex language that employs signs made by moving the hands combined with facial expressions and postures of the body. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf or hard of hearing. ASL is a language completely separate and distinct from English. It relies heavily on facial expression. For example, English speakers ask a question by raising the pitch of their voice, while ASL users ask a question by raising their eyebrows, widening their eyes, and tilting their bodies forward. Students in the ASL Level 1 class will be taught

how to implement basic signs and expressions which they can use to communicate with the deaf community as well as with other signers. In addition to learning sign language, participants will also learn about deaf culture. This includes the arts as well as specific rules of behavior in communication.

For example, a person using sign language has the floor during a conversation until he or she provides a visual indicator (pause, facial expression, etc.) that he or she is finished speaking. During the eight-week course at the library, students will learn fingerspelling, numbering, facial expression, sentence structure, basic classifiers, vocabulary development, culturally appropriate conversation management, as well as how to initiate a conversation, how to ask basic questions,

how to respond to questions, and how to conclude a conversation. The expected learning outcomes for the ASL Level 1 class include: ▸▸ Students will know basic vocabulary and possess basic grammar skills for communication. ▸▸ Students will be able to make introductions and share personal information about self, family, basic desires and interests. ▸▸ Students will be able to talk about their surroundings by giving and receiving directions as well as sharing information about where they live. ▸▸ Students will be able to use basic strategies for establishment and maintenance of conversations and relationships. ▸▸ Students will have a basic understanding of deaf culture including exposure to ASL literature and art. The American Sign Language Level 1 – Beginner class is taught on Thursday afternoons from 1-2:30pm at the Weston Branch Library. The first class begins on September 6th and the program concludes on October 25th. This class is designed for adults and teens. There is limited space available; pre-registration is required. ristina Miranda Gilson was born in Cuba, raised in Spain, and is now living the American dream. The founder, owner and chief executive officer of Weston-based Housing and Development Services, Inc., has been named one of the 12 Hispanic Women of Distinction honorees for 2018. “I am honored to be selected and join this prestigious group of Hispanic women making a difference,” stated Gilson. “It was a surprise to be nominated and greater even to be selected with this distinction.” She is certainly deserving of this honor. Gilson’s company is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and has grown into a multi-million dollar business. Housing and Development Services (HDS) is comprised of two divisions, Housing and Development Software and eHousing Plus, which develop niche software and provide services to the affordable housing and community development markets. Gilson strives to promote diversity

within HDS; 93% of the employees are minorities, of which 57% are female professionals. Ten years ago, Gilson established the HDS Foundation, Inc. The nonprofit allows her company to give back to the community it serves, with particular emphasis on helping teens and young adults on the autism spectrum. As a mother of a daughter with autism, Gilson understands firsthand the unique challenges these young people experience and wanted to help enrich their lives. It supports charities such as Autism Speaks and the Dan Marino Foundation. Having that right, you need to affirmatively participate and exercise it by casting your ballot; that is democracy. If you have not registered, you still have until October 9, 2018 to register to vote in the November 6, 2018 General Election by going to www.RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov – every vote does count and matters. On Tuesday, November 6, 2018, Weston’s registered voters will have the opportunity to select the new City Commissioner for Seat No. 4 as well as consider two proposed City Charter Amendments. The first amendment proposes a change in the compensation for Mayor and City Commissioners. Since 2002, the City Charter provides for the Mayor and Commissioners to be compensated at the rate of $13,000 and $10,000 per year, respectively. The proposed amendment would increase salaries to $16,000 and $12,300 per year, respectively, effective December 1, 2018, to increase annually on December 1, based on the annual change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The second amendment proposes to eliminate term limits for the Mayor and Commissioners. When incorporated in 1996, the Weston Charter did not contain term limits. Term limits were adopted in 2002. The proposed Charter Amendment language states: The current City Charter provides for term limits for the Mayor and City Commissioners. The proposed amendment would eliminate the term limits. I encourage you to educate yourself on the candidates and amendments. Ask questions. The voting booth is a-kin to a report card for those of us in office or seeking political office. Voters have the power to elect someone into office and they have the power to remove someone from office by electing someone new. The next Weston Performing Arts Season is about to get underway in October and residents will receive the Weston @Play Parks and Recreation Guide in the mail this month, detailing many of the upcoming events as well as Community Center class information. Highlights each year for our residents are the Moonlight Movie in the Park Series, the WestonNights Concert in the Park Series, the Symphony Series, Foreign Film Series, puppet and magic shows, Weston Winter Safety Expo, Weston World Fest, Celebrate the Arts Day and much, much more. Arts, culture and the multitude of events and happenings bringing people together within Weston is the ‘special sauce’ that makes this City great. Lastly, please be mindful that September is the peak of hurricane season which runs through November 30. The adage “the first 72 are up to you” means that you need to have the food and supplies to maintain yourself for 3-days without assistance. Florida Do Not Call Lists BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK any constituents are confused as to the calls allowed and exempt from the “Do Not Call” list. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services maintains the Florida specific “Do Not Call” list. Florida residents who do not wish to receive sales calls or sales texts may have their residential, mobile or paging device telephone number included on this list. It is unlawful to make telephone sales calls before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. local time or prevent transmission of the solicitor’s name or telephone number to the party called. The use of auto dialers with pre-recorded messages is also not permitted in Florida except for the following reasons: Exemptions to the Florida Do Not Call Law Some unsolicited sales calls are exempt from the provisions of the law. Solicitors may make calls, when: ▸▸ A prior or existing business relationship exists. ▸▸ In response to an express request of the person called. ▸▸ From a newspaper publisher. ▸▸ In connection with an existing debt or contract. ▸▸ A real estate agent responds to a yard sign or other advertisement. Furthermore, some solicitation calls are not “telephonic sales calls” as defined in the statute because they typically are not selling a product or service. Generally, these calls are from: ▸▸ Charitable organizations seeking donations. ▸▸ Political candidates and political parties seeking donation. ▸▸ Research or survey companies seeking an opinion. ▸▸ Collection agencies trying to locate a debtor or collect on a debt. If you receive a call from a professional solicitor, charity or seller of goods and you no longer wish to receive calls from that entity, tell the organization that you no longer wish to receive solicitations. Additionally, file a complaint with the department so that there will be a record that you have previously requested that the entity stop contacting you via telephone. Businesses and charities are required to maintain a list of consumers who have made a do-not-call request, and it is a violation to call a consumer who has asked to be placed on the company’s do-not-call list. If You Receive an Unwanted Sales Call or Text Anyone who receives an unsolicited sales call should attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the caller and immediately report the violation to the department by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352) and request a form via regular mail, download a Do Not Call Complaint Form, or file a Do Not Call Online Complaint. Unwanted sales texts should be preserved for assistance in completing the submission of a Do Not Text Complaint Form. The department has the authority to contact the solicitor and inform it of the requirements of the law. While the department does not resolve individual consumer problems, your complaint will help investigate the company and could lead to an enforcement action. Subscription to the Florida Do Not Call list is now being offered free of charge for residential and mobile telephone numbers. Your number will remain on the Florida Do Not Call list for five years. ichelle Martinez Reyes, of Weston, will be one of three honorees at the second annual Girl Scouts Lead the Way luncheon. The event recognizes inspirational women in Broward County who are leaders in their industry, role models for today’s girls, and embody the characteristics of a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, and Leader). In the nomination letter, Martinez Reyes was described as a devoted and tenacious businesswoman who takes pride in her work and has seen proven success in the legal marketing industry. It stated, “She is the epitome of a driven, innovative, selfless, hardworking woman.” As Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for Greenspoon Marder LLP, Martinez Reyes is part of the leadership team at the firm, which is one of the fastest growing law firms in the country. Young Entrepreneur Makes Charitable Giving Part of His Business Plan BY STACEY BOMSER

f you watch the TV show Shark Tank, you know that the best businesses solve real-world problems. Maybe that’s why Adam Serota’s Heritage Apparel has been so successful, hitting $250,000 in sales in less than two years. What’s even more impressive is that the company is poised to donate $50,000 this year to charity. Adam, a Cypress Bay High School Class of 2015 graduate, came up with the concept for Heritage Apparel after discovering there was a need for cool, custom t-shirts geared towards college students, especially those involved in Greek life (fraternities and sororities). He designed a shirt for his fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, and it sold really well; almost every brother bought one. Adam made the shirt through an online printing company but realized he could have made it for half the cost at a local screen printing shop. He then redesigned the shirt to appeal to AEPi’s at other schools and put it up for sale. “I remember sitting there with my roommate the night I posted it, refreshing the webpage every few minutes and seeing dozens of orders pour in by the minute,” shares Adam. “I knew I was on to something and decided that night I was going to go into the busi-

ness of designing and printing Greek apparel.” Adam has since built Heritage Apparel into a viable business, putting what he is learning in the classroom as a Commercial Entrepreneurship major at Florida State University into practice. Commercial entrepreneurship is the practice of identifying problems within society, crafting solutions to those problems, and building the operation needed to execute and sustain those solutions. “All of my peers are as eager as I am about creating their own businesses, and just being with the cohort through the ups and downs of real entrepreneurial days helps a lot,” explains Adam. “My professors, all entrepreneurs, are incredibly knowledgeable on real business, having all owned their own. Someone in the school has dealt with anything I’ve faced thus far in my business and have been more than helpful in getting me past whatever obstacle I’m facing.” Although building a successful business has not been easy, and Adam concedes he has logged long hours in the process giving up a lot of socializing to make it happen, he says he would not have it any other way. One of his greatest sources of pride is knowing how Heritage Apparel is helping the lives

of others. The company is committed to supporting charitable causes. “I donate the most to Dance Marathon, Relay For Life, Light the Night and the charities my clients support through their organizational events, such as CASA, Heroes to Heroes and Make-A-Wish to name a few,” states Adam. He says giving to charity is something he learned growing up here in Weston. “My parents gave me a beautiful life, a happy home, and a chance to succeed at life. Little Girl Holds Lemonade Stand to Benefit Weston BSO BY STACEY BOMSER

sabella Escalona is a little girl with a caring heart and a sweet tooth. The Everglades Elementary School second grader held a lemonade stand this summer to benefit the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Weston. Isabella says she’s always wanted to do a lemonade stand because “it looks so cool!” The project became somewhat of a family affair. “I asked my mom to help me make the lemonade stand. She gave me some money to buy my supplies. My daddy built the tent and my mommy helped me decorate,” explains Isabella. But this was no ordinary lemonade stand. This was for charity. Isabella wanted to raise money for the local police. “I want to be a police woman when I grow up,” she shares. “I wanted to show them that I am thankful for what they do.” Isabella set up her lemonade stand outside the entrance to her neighborhood, The Ridges. She sold pink lemonade, her favorite, for 50-cents a glass, and gave away cookies as a thank-you to her patrons. She collected $181. The reaction from customers was incredible. “People were very excited to see me donating money to the police,” says Isabella. “They told me things

like, ‘I love what you are doing!’” Isabella personally delivered her hard-earned money to BSO officers at the Police Services Station in Weston. She says the officers were all grateful for her gift. “They were all so happy and thankful. They kept saying ‘thank you’.” Because BSO cannot accept money, Isabella’s generous donation will be used to support the BSO Explorers program. This is a special program for students, ages 14-21, with an interest in law enforcement.

“I want to be in the Explorers program when I go to Falcon Cove Middle School,” states Isabella. “I wish I could be in the club now.” This lemonade stand is just one of many acts of charity conducted by this little girl. This past summer Isabella also made backpacks filled with school uniforms and school supplies to donate to children in need to start the school year. Last year, she donated dog food and dog beds to the Humane Society. She also conducts many community service projects through her participation in Girl Scouts.

Manatee Bay Elementary Yearbook Wins National Contest BY STACEY BOMSER

ongratulations to Manatee Bay Elementary School. The school won first place in Yearbook Life’s 2017-2018 Best Yearbook Contest. Yearbook Life staff evaluated more than 600 yearbooks for overall originality, yearbook creativity, yearbook theme consistency, and yearbook image quality. Manatee Bay’s Free to Be You and Me at MBE certainly checked the boxes for all of those categories.

“I think we won because our yearbook was so creative, different and themed throughout. The book was 3D and full of QR scan codes. We had things we were told no other school has ever done,” stated Yearbook Co-Chair Lisa Vlock. “On every fifth grade class page the teacher recorded an inspirational message for their students, so when the kids scan the code they will actually see a picture of their teacher and hear the message. We also had the principal and assistant principals make recordings. There are numerous QR codes throughout and some are linked to videos like the making of the human peace sign done to music, as well as the chorus club show.” The almost 200-page book was also meticulously planned and designed. Yearbook Co-Chair Leslie Levinson is a graphic artist who has been doing yearbooks since she was a student. “I was Editor and Chief of my high school

yearbook. I was an editor for the University of Miami 1994 Yearbook. I also prepared the pre-school yearbooks for my kids.” Leslie and Lisa have worked together as Yearbook Chairs at Manatee Bay for five of the past six years. They spent every summer organizing the pages, creating backgrounds and doing the layouts. “We each probably spent at least 1,000 hours or more,” shared Lisa. “The last two weeks before the yearbook was done, we each probably logged over 200 hours, staying up until three or four in the morning.” Leslie says it was all worth it. “It is completely a labor of love. It’s like carrying a baby for nine months and then getting to see it and hold it is priceless.” While their tenure has ended, as both women no longer have children attending Manatee Bay, they are proud to have left this award-winning yearbook as their legacy. “Leslie and I truly put our heart and souls into this yearbook and creating something special for the kids to remember. We never dreamed of winning,” notes Lisa. “It was the perfect way to finish out being yearbook chairs!” Leslie added, “Being it was our last year together doing this it made the award that much sweeter.” As first place winner, the Manatee Bay PTA received $250.

t was an exciting start to the new school year. School administrators and teachers were joined by City leaders, including Mayor Daniel Stermer and Commissioner Byron Jaffe, and Broward Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers in welcoming students (and parents) back to school with friendly smiles and warm hugs. The safety of our students is a top priority. The City of Weston, with a contribution from the School Board of Broward County, funds BSO School Resource Officers in all public schools in Weston. Two School Resource Officers are assigned to Cypress Bay High School, one to Falcon Cove Middle School and one to Tequesta Trace Middle School, and one to each of the six elementary schools as well as Imagine Charter School at Weston. Weston is proud to be home to some of the toprated schools in Broward County. The quality of education is evident in students’ success. Last year, 14 Weston students received prestigious National Merit Scholarship awards. In addition, Cypress Bay Junior Angela Li earned a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Computer Science A exam. Weston students are equally talented in the arts, with Cypress Bay High School boasting a 2018 Congressional Art Competition winner and its drama department winning five Cappies Awards for the production of Rent. Weston schools excel in athletics as well, with numerous trophies lining the walls of local schools. Even at the elementary school level, Weston schools are accomplishing amazing things. Manatee Bay Elementary School fifth graders are six-time winners of the First in Math national competition. The Spanish Club at Indian Trace Elementary took home several gold medals from the 2018 World Language District Competition. If the first day was any indication, the 2018-2019 school year will be a huge success!

Arthroscopy of the Foot and Ankle BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is

able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized, and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery is used to treat chronic joint pain and swelling, arthritis and bone spurs, loose bone and cartilage fragments, stiff, scarred joints, and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered.

The advantages of arthroscopic surgery include: faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; outpatient procedure; and quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. Carlo A. Choices and Consequences BY IVIS MATEOS he biggest problem I find persistently increasing in our society today is the lack of accountability and responsibility some children are exhibiting. There is an alarming surge of shortfalls in social emotional areas such as behavior, independence and failure to build strong relationships with peers. As educators and parents, we see an increase in behavioral issues where some children are less remorseful for their actions and show lack of respect for authority. These children believe they are entitled to do whatever they wish without consequence, and we believe it has a direct correlation to lack of parental guidance and proper supervision. Parents need to step it up and raise children to know the importance of having accountability for their choices and consequences, instead of excusing their actions and assuming they are babies or too little to really know what they are doing. Children’s cognitive awareness starts from birth, therefore, there are always teachable opportunities when they are faced with daily choices. Children are also struggling more than ever with building relationships with others. They have become more isolated and struggle with problem solving since most of their interactions away from school are with technology. iPads, parents’ phones, TV, and online mentors such as YouTubers and cartoons like Sponge Bob are taking over the role of raising our children. Social emotional development in our children begins with the relationship parents have with their children. When I asked my 14-year-old what he thought the contributing factors were to the issues we are currently facing with our youth, he explained that he sees parents are giving too much power to their children, children are relying on unsuitable online mentors instead of their parents, and these mentors are not working in the best interest of the child. There are many great tools for parents such as websites where you can search for worksheets and information on parenting. It is also important to find schools that include “Heart and Mind” education in the curriculum, where children are given opportunities to learn about compassion, love, and forgiveness. Part of the responsibility we have as educators, mentors, and parents is to prepare our children for life. Yes, give children choices. Let them choose what to eat, what to wear, etc., because children need to be allowed to think and choose while parents preclude their ability to be accountable. Unaware of its importance, many women avoid regular dental care during and immediately after pregnancy. In addition, uneducated dentists may not stress its importance and may even be less willing to provide certain services during pregnancy. This is very unfortunate for there are definite implications of poor oral health in pregnant women, their pregnancies, as well as their children. Multiple studies have shown links between periodontal disease (infection of the gums and bones supporting the teeth) and adverse outcomes in pregnancy including preterm deliveries, low birth weight babies, and preeclampsia. Children born to mothers with poor oral hygiene and high levels of certain oral bacteria have a significantly higher risk of developing cavities at an early age. This may be one of the causative factors in a child’s development of a condition called early childhood caries or ECC. ECC is a complicated situation in which cavities occur rampantly at an age in which needed care may be difficult to deliver. Fortunately, most of the causes of both cavities and ECC are preventable. Cavities are caused in large part by having high levels of certain oral bacteria. Although children are not born with these cavity causing bacteria, they are eventually transferred by caregivers to children. This can occur, for example, by blowing on a hot spoon of cereal. It is not natural, or possible, to forever eliminate these bacteria. However, the longer it takes to transfer, the decreased risk of cavities in general and ECC specifically. The way of accomplishing this would be to eliminate cavities in the mouths of mothers (and all caregivers for that matter) and reduce the amount of plaque through regular dental checkups, cleaning and application of topical fluoride (in toothpaste and rinse). It would be easiest to complete all dental work prior to pregnancy. However, it is important to keep in mind that most dental procedures can be accomplished during pregnancy. The safest and most comfortable time to accomplish dental work during pregnancy is the second trimester. We recommend using this time not only to receive services, but also to obtain tips for oral care for mother and baby. There are many special circumstances during pregnancy. For example, nausea and vomiting can create some difficulty in controlling the acid levels in the mouth, which can increase the risks of both enamel erosion as well as cavities in mother. You would be surprised at the creative strategies which can be used to overcome many of these challenges.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. ext month, more than 1.5 million high school juniors across the country will sit down to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). It serves as the initial screen for the National Merit Scholarship program. This past year, 14 students from Weston earned prestigious National Merit Scholarship awards. They were among the approximately 7,500 distinguished high school graduates who shared in the more than $31 million in scholarship money. Approximately 4,000 college-sponsored Merit Scholarships were presented in 2018. These awards provide recipients between $500 and $2000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. The University of Florida awarded National Merit Scholarships to six Weston students. Cypress Bay High School graduates Andrew Kennedy, Caleb Wong and Zonshen Yu all received this prestigious scholarship, as did Augustina Vincent de Urquiza from Western High School and Michael Galbreath and Fernando Rivera from American Heritage School. Cypress Bay Prepares Students for College Application Process BY STACEY BOMSER

his is a stressful and hectic time of year for college-bound high school seniors. Over the next few weeks and months, students will be busy writing essays, filling out college applications, possibly retaking the SAT or ACT in hopes of improving their scores, and anxiously awaiting their college acceptances. Fortunately, the college counseling department at Cypress Bay High School is there to help students through the process. “Right now, most seniors should have their tentative list of schools they are applying to, understand the various applications and set up usernames and passwords, have started to draft their essays, figured out who is writing their letters of recommendation, have taken the SAT or ACT, and have met with someone from our department to make sure they are on the right path,” explains Cypress Bay College Advisor Shari Bush. She says there is no magic number as to how many schools a student should apply. “Most students apply to approximately six to nine schools. I am a fan of students having their dream school, safety school and several good fits on their list.” Bush cautions that there is no time to slack off

during senior year, even after you hit the submit button on your last application. “Senior grades matter, especially if a student is deferred or a school wants to see first semester grades. Students should communicate any new important information to the colleges once their applications have been sent. This is also a good time to start looking at scholarships.” Cypress Bay students are taught that the time to start planning for college begins as soon as they enter high school. However, Bush says that junior year is the most important year academically. “Junior year, for most colleges, is the last year of grades that are submitted,” she explains. “It is also the year of the SAT and ACT testing and the year students should be challenging themselves as much as they can and performing well in their classes.” Bush says class placement is critical throughout high school. “Students do not need to be rock stars in every subject. Weston Principals Offer Advice for Academic Success BY STACEY BOMSER

t’s the start of a new school year and that means a fresh start for all students. In order to make the 2018-2019 year the best it can be, the principals of some of the elementary schools here in Weston shared their advice for academic success. “Have your child set a goal for success in each subject and what he/she would like to accomplish by the next report card, for example, ‘I would like to get a 98% in math overall and I will do this by reviewing my math skills every night and not being afraid to ask questions when I need help,’” suggests Manatee Bay Elementary Principal Heather HedmanDevaughn. “For my daughter, whenever she took the time to study or review every subject every night she always received an ‘A’ report card.” She says parents can help by making sure their son or daughter understands the “why” to what they’re doing. “This can help children develop deep conceptual understanding and also apply skills to life.” Principal Christy de Zayas, at Eagle Point Elementary, recommends parents reach out to their child’s teacher and schedule their first parent/ teacher conference four to five weeks into the school year. “By this time, the teacher will have had an opportunity to get to know your child and evaluate their present levels of performance and have learn-

n today’s hectic world, it is common to feel tired because we have so many responsibilities and our to-do lists just keep getting longer - consuming every single second of our existence. But if you’ve tried to address this problem by going to bed early and following an adequate diet to still wake up fatigued and drained, you may be suffering from a vitamin deficiency and specifically a vitamin B-12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is necessary for the body to produce red blood cells and DNA, along with supporting neurological function. It is obtained from animal sources such as poultry, eggs, meat and dairy products, including milk. Because of this, vegetarians and vegans are

at high risk for developing a vitamin B12 deficiency and supplementation is important. Selecting foods that are fortified with Vitamin B is critical if you do not consume animal products, as vitamin B12 cannot be found in plants. Older adults are also at risk because they tend to consume less food overall, have limited diets and also have less stomach acid production, which prevents absorption. It must be noted, however, that supplementation alone may not solve the problem and you may need to get injections to treat a possible deficiency. The reason for this is that individuals may suffer from B12 deficiency due to malabsorption, and not because they are not consuming B12-rich foods. If you suffer from Crohn’s or celiac disease, you may be eating the right kinds of foods or taking in enough vitamins, but your body can’t absorb it. This is also the case in patients

who have had part of their stomachs removed in weight loss surgery. In addition, some people lack intrinsic factor, a protein needed in order for the body to absorb B12 and it could be due to genetics or even autoimmune conditions. The Key to Aging Beautifully and Naturally Over Time BY DR. TAMY FAIERMAN, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON n today’s world, anti-aging awareness is on everyone’s mind. The big question I often get is, “When should I start working with a cosmetic surgeon to prevent future aging?” My answer is always the same: the sooner your cosmetic surgeon gets to know you, the better. We all know that once the first signs of aging appear, the process seems to progress quickly. In order to tackle the inevitability of aging in an aesthetically natural and appealing manner, we must first understand how our faces progress and change through time. To begin with, let’s keep it simple and compare your face to the fabric on a chair: you first notice a small stain, which can be lightened to appear invisible. Over time that stain becomes more prominent and others appear around it, making the fabric appear even more stained. Then, one day, you notice the fabric isn’t as firm as it used to be, having lost its elasticity in some areas. Upon further inspection, your once plump and heavily cushioned chair has become saggy and sunken, exposing parts of the chair’s skeleton. And then one day, you attempt to sit on your chair and the sturdy framework that lent you faithful support all of those years, finally gives in and crumbles. This is very similar to what happens to the face. The chair’s fabric is your skin, revealing the earliest evidence of discoloration. The plump cushion is like your youthful cheeks, which are made up of all the underlying muscles and fat. And, the framework, which holds it all together, is similar to your facial skeleton. These seemingly minimal changes in your framework are often masked through time by the superficial cushioning of your facial muscles and fat pads, until redistribution and loss of tissues reveal a frail structure. Lastly, it is important to understand the implications of facial bone loss on the aging face in order to restore a natural youthful appearance. The facial skeleton experiences morphologic change, and an overall decrease in volume, with increasing age. As we approach our early 30s, bone density begins to experience a gradual rate of decline. The aging process happens simultaneously. The facial muscles and fat pads decrease in volume, while the skin that holds them together loses its elasticity, culminating in a true domino effect. From the top down, your temples appear more sunken which leads to the formation of heavy pads beneath your eyes, followed by folds around your mouth (laugh lines), which weigh down the corners of your lips resulting in jowls along your jawline and the appearance of a saggy neck. If your goal is to age gracefully, and have a “less is more” approach, quick fixes are never the solution. Rather, starting earlier than later with your cosmetic surgeon will always yield the best results. This slow and steady approach involves maintenance through regular use of SPF and antioxidants to periodic laser treatments, fillers and neuromodulators.

Anyone can get pink eye, but students, teachers and daycare workers are particularly at risk for the contagious types of pink eye because they work closely with others in the classroom. What Is Pink Eye? Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is inflammation of the thin, clear covering of the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids (conjunctiva). Although the conjunctiva is transparent, it contains blood vessels that overlay the sclera of the eye. Anything that triggers inflammation will cause these conjunctival blood vessels to dilate. This is what causes red, bloodshot eyes. What Causes Pink Eye? The primary types of conjunctivitis, based on cause, are: ▸▸ Viral conjunctivitis is caused by a virus, like the common cold. This type of pink eye is very contagious, but usually will clear up on its own within several days without medical treatment. ▸▸ Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria. This type of conjunctivitis can cause serious damage to the eye if left untreated. ▸▸ Allergic conjunctivitis is caused by eye irritants such as pollen, dust and animal dander among susceptible individuals. Why Litigate When You Can Collaborate? BY EVAN BARON ften, I meet individuals who are more anxious about the prospect of litigation than they are about the ultimate dissolution of their marriage. This is likely a result of the public’s general perception that divorce proceedings are and always will be adversarial in nature. However, the State of Florida has experienced a paradigm shift. One in which families can address and resolve their divorce (or other family related matters, such as child support, timesharing modifications and Paternity actions), in a team setting which assembles for the sole purpose and goal of helping individuals separate without tearing their families apart. This paradigm shift is called the Collaborative Process. Contemplating divorce is very time-consuming and mentally taxing. The saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” The same, however, is untrue for individuals contemplating ending their marriage. The mental gymnastics required when considering all aspects and potential consequences of a divorce are physically and emotionally draining for anyone. This is especially true in cases involving children. Now, imagine that after careful deliberation, you make the difficult decision that divorce is the right choice for you and your family. However, with that choice, you are faced with the possibility that initiating a divorce will equate to “going to war” with your spouse or each spouse’s attorney going to war on their client’s behalf. This fear is often crippling and results in spouses delaying a divorce proceeding, even though all circumstances point to the divorce being necessary for the wellbeing of everyone involved, including children. Whether spouses decide to forgo a divorce should be based on the potential for reconciliation not because of a fear of the legal process embarked on when dissolving a marriage. Clock Drill Make the short putts. Nothing is more frustrating than hitting a great drive, placing the approach shot on the green and missing a two-foot par putt and walking away with bogey. Practice, practice, and practice from short ranges. The clock drill is excellent reinforcement. Begin by placing three balls in a line at three, six, and nine feet from the hole similar to the twelve, three, six and nine position on a clock. The goal is to make all twelve in a row. If you miss any putt, then go back to the beginning and start over. Ladder Drill Improve your putting from long range. Give yourself the opportunity to make short putts inside five feet from the hole. Percentages that you’ll make a putt dramatically decrease the farther away you are from the hole. The ladder drill is designed to improve putting from longer distances. Place a tee in the ground in a line ten feet, 20 feet, 30 feet and 40 feet away. In this drill, you are attempting to control the distance you hit each putt. The ladder drill begins by hitting a putt to the first tee, which is ten feet away. Next, hit a 20-footer, then 30-footer followed by a 40-foot putt. The idea is to get the ball to stop as close to each tee as possible. The next step is to theoretically close the ladder. From the first tee, hit a 30-foot putt, followed by 20-foot putt followed by a ten-foot putt to the final tee. At the conclusion, you have successfully opened and closed the ladder. The drill continues by going through the same sequence from the opposite direction. If the first putts were all uphill, you are now faced with a series of difficult downhill putts. Once you can successfully navigate this drill, your feel on the greens should improve. Path Drill Many amateurs push or pull the putt off line. This is caused from an in-to-out or out-to-in swing path. The following drill will help develop a consistent path. Find a flat area on the green and place two clubs on the ground wide enough to place the putter head behind the ball. Swing the putter between the two clubs and hit the ball. If the putter hits any of the clubs, you are not swinging the putter down the target line. Make sure the putter head stays low to the ground and follows through. ours, mine, and ours. Sadly, in America the average marriage lasts only seven years, with one out of two marriages ending in divorce. As over seventy-five percent of divorced individuals eventually choose to remarry, blended families now outnumber traditional nuclear families. And while this family dynamic has become the new normal, it’s a far cry from what was portrayed on the classic television series, “The Brady Bunch.” If you are part of a blended family, you face some unique estate planning challenges. These include providing for your current spouse if he or she survives you,,and making sure that when your spouse dies your children will be taken care of. Obviously, after the first spouse passes, the family dynamic can change dramatically; what the surviving spouse ends up doing with his or her assets can often be unpredictable. As we all know, blood is thicker than water. Let’s explore just a few possible estate planning options. Your spouse. A simple, albeit not wise, approach would be to leave everything to your spouse. As your spouse adores your children, you have no doubt that he/she will take care of your children after you are gone, right? Keep in mind that an unintended consequence of this approach might be totally disinheriting your own children! Consider this: After you are gone, if your spouse becomes incapacitated it is very likely that your spouse’s children will take over the financial affairs of the family. You don’t need a vivid imagination to see how that might turn into a disaster. What happens when your spouse dies? Or remarries? Without thoughtful planning, your assets may ultimately be inherited by your stepchildren, or even by the person who marries your spouse! Proper legal planning can avoid this potential pitfall. Your children. Another solution is to leave assets to your spouse and your children. Of course, this guarantees that your children will not be disinherited, but here too this path may lead to unintended consequences. Leaving assets outright to your children opens up a wide range of concerns, including the possibility that they may squander their inheritance by spending or investing unwisely, or lose most or all in a nasty divorce, an untimely lawsuit, or through bankruptcy. Even if your children are adults, shouldn’t you still protect them from future creditors and predators? Your ex-spouse. You probably don’t consider your ex, but your former spouse plays a role in your estate planning. Think about it. If you leave money to your minor children, it is likely that your ex-spouse will be appointed by the probate court to manage your children’s property. What happens if a child dies while single and childless? Who would inherit their assets? As the next-of-kin of your children, that individual can be your ex-wife or ex-husband! Planning effectively for a blended family requires creativity, experience and know-how. Consult with an estate planning professional to formulate a plan that is right for you and your family. he focus of anti-aging procedures often rests in rejuvenation of the face. A person’s hands are often neglected, and therefore remain a tell-tale sign of aging. Posture...Who Cares? BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER new patient recently came to our office complaining of chronic neck pain. As a chiropractic doctor, the first thing we noted was this patient’s obvious postural distortion. She disclosed she had just had a routine physical check up and told she was in “excellent health”. This little gem of information sadly revealed how misunderstood posture is by many in the business of health care. So why should we concern ourselves with posture? Your head is a little off center...who cares? All these sophisticated medical tests show you are the epitome of health, right? Wrong! If you have postural faults, however minor, your health will be less than optimum. The greater the postural distortion, the less optimum will be your health. It is that simple. Scientific research has shown abnormal posture not only produces pain, but also causes: ▸▸ deterioration of the discs and vertebrae of the spine, and of ligaments, muscles and soft tissues of the central nervous system (CNS), ▸▸ some “organic” (internal system) disorders, ▸▸ abnormal motion, predisposing to muscle “pulls” and repetitive strain injuries, ▸▸ and reduction in quality of life. Of these postural effects, the most important to overall health and well-being is the impact posture has on the central nervous system. Think for a moment: what does the CNS control? Gum Disease in Dogs BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM

ore than 85% of dogs over four years of age have periodontal disease. It is a progressive inflammation of the supporting structures around the teeth. Periodontal disease starts when bacteria form plaque on the teeth. Within days, minerals in the saliva bond with plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria work their way under the gums and cause gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Once under the gums, bacteria destroy the supporting tissue around the tooth, leading to tooth loss. Inflammation of the bone and tooth support structures is referred to as periodontitis. The combination of gingivitis and periodontitis is known as periodontal disease. Bacteria associated with dental disease can travel in the bloodstream to infect the heart, kidneys, and liver. What Are the Signs of Periodontal Disease? The signs of periodontal disease include: bad breath; redness or bleeding along the gum line; drooling, which may be tinged with blood; difficulty

chewing; pawing at the mouth; loose or missing teeth; facial swelling, especially under the eyes; nasal discharge; and gum recession. How Is Periodontal Disease Diagnosed? Your veterinarian can see signs of gingivitis and tartar buildup by examining your dog’s mouth. However, since most periodontal disease occurs beneath the gum line, the only way to truly assess your dog’s mouth is to perform an examination while your pet is under anesthesia. Your veterinarian can use a dental probe to measure any loss of attachment around each tooth and take dental radiographs (x-rays) to assess for bone loss, abscesses, and other problems. How Is Periodontal Disease Treated? Treatment depends on the severity of the disease. If your dog has mild periodontal disease, consisting of gingivitis without any bone loss, a thorough dental cleaning that includes the area beneath the gums, followed by dental polishing, can help reverse the problem. After a dental cleaning, your veterinarian may also recommend a plaque prevention gel that adheres to the teeth surfaces to inhibit tartar. Your veterinarian may also recommend a dental sealant that helps prevent tartar from accumulating on teeth. He/she can also recommend the best dental diets or

treats for your pet. If there has been a loss of the supporting structures around the teeth, however, this cannot be reversed. Your veterinarian may need to apply antibiotics beneath the gums and perform dental procedures, which may include tooth extraction. Ask your veterinarian what dental hygiene methods are recommended for your dog, and don’t forget to keep scheduled appointments for follow-up dental checkups. Weston Rotary Club Initiates Global Grant for AGUAjira Project BY LILIANA PINZON, WESTON ROTARY CLUB

he Weston Rotary Club is playing a lead role in helping solve a severe water shortage in La Guajira, Colombia. The Weston Rotary, in partnership with the Santa Barbara Rotary Club in Bogota, Colombia, the Cerrejon Rotary Club, designated district funds from five Rotary Districts, and the Rotary Foundation, is getting a Global Grant to provide a partial solution for the severe water problem the Wayuu native population has endured for years. These remote rural areas have been abandoned by the Colombian government for years, and the extreme environmental conditions (drought, mining, etc.) has caused more than 3000 water wells to totally dry up. The scarce water the people find is geographically dis-

perse, making them walk miles every day to get water that is completely unsafe, due to no sewage or garbage collection system in place. The number of dead children in La Guajira is on an average not far from that of Rwanda in Africa, where the under-five mortality rate per 1,000 births is 55, according to the World Bank. La Guajira is at 45. The solution Rotary will be bringing to the area as a pilot is an Atmospheric Generator of Drinkable Water powered by a photovoltaic source (solar panels). Basically, through a process of condensation, the generator extracts water from the atmosphere, supplying 300 liters of drinkable water every day. This solution is autonomous, since it is connected to solar panels and batteries that will guarantee the operation of the machine even during the night. It is completely ecological, not producing any waste or damage to the environment. It works in areas with humidity levels higher than 50% (La Guajira has 75% average). Also, it requires minimal maintenance (the replacement of some filters twice a year and some basic cleaning), and it is fully transportable. It can be installed on a truck or trailer and taken to nearby communi-

ties if desired. The only down side to this project is the limited reach (only 300 people) and the security needed to keep the machine guarded. Members of the Weston Rotary have visited the area and found a school that has committed to keeping the machine working and safe. The local Cerrejon Rotary Club will be in charge of ensuring the machine will keep on working safely and constantly for its 20-year useful life. The next step is the official Global Grant final approval, and then, five months later, Weston Rotarians will return to La Guajira to be present when our machine drips the first drop of clean water. In the future, there are plans to expand this project to other Wayuu communities with additional Global Grants. The Rotary Club of Weston meets Thursdays at 7:30am at the Weston Hills Country Club. It’s been a fun summer at Camp Sagemont with Color War and a silly face challenge. The Teen Travel Camp visited the historic Venetian Pool in Coral Gables.

COLOR WAR

WET & WILD

It was a wet and wild summer for campers at Camp TDD. Children enjoyed a visit to the waterpark, Cowpoke Day, and a dance party.

It was non-stop fun during a USA vs Israel World Cup themed Color War at Camp B’nai Aviv. Children proudly showed their team spirit while participating in activities such as tug of war, relay races, cake decorating, and more.

Fun and fitness went hand in hand at Mark at the Park Summer Sports Camp. Campers enjoyed playing games like indoor hockey, competing in Color War activities, and lots of fun field trips.

At Camp Lingua, campers enjoyed a fun-filled summer with language lessons, horseback riding, outdoor activities, and making new friends.

The Broward League of Cities acknowledged Mayor Daniel Stermer and other recipients of the 2018 Home Rule Hero Award from the Florida League of Cities.
