Stand Up and Be Counted!
T
he U.S. Constitution mandates a count of every person living in the United States every ten years. This census doesn’t just include Citizens, it must include every person in the country, including immigrants. It is our duty as residents of our community to make sure that everyone in our family is counted. You have till September 30 to make sure that you and your family are included! If you have not already done so, go to www.2020census.gov to make sure your family is counted. It only takes a couple of minutes and is critical to ensure that South Florida gets its fair share of federal and state resources. The census is also used to determine how many representatives each state gets in Congress. One of the great things about South Florida is our vibrant melting pot of people. It is especially important for immigrants, even undocumented immigrants, to respond to the census. In the past, many South Floridians have avoided the census because they were scared. Have no fear. Immigration officials are prohibited by law from using the data collected for any purpose other than the count. Stand up and be counted before its too late!

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Avoiding Probate: Debunking Common Myths BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
Y
ou likely know that probate administration is expensive, time-consuming and public. Yet, there are commonly held misconceptions surrounding this topic which lead many to make uninformed decisions resulting in the need to have an estate probated. While the best way to avoid probate is to speak with an experienced estate planning attorney, let’s take a look at just a few probate and estate planning myths: I’ll leave my home to my children through a will to avoid probate. This is the most common of all the estate planning myths! The truth is that inherited property cannot be retitled or sold, without approval of the probate court, which requires probate administration for the deceased. There are, however, ways to avoid the need for probate including the creation of a new deed where your property eventually passes to your heirs, or retitling your home to your trust . (An estate planning attorney can help determine the best option.) Adding my adult child to my deed is a great way to avoid probate. While your property will indeed pass without probate after you die, there is much risk when adding someone to your deed. The child’s interest in the home is not shielded from creditors via Homestead protection, if it is not their primary residence. A fractional interest in the property owned by a person who does not reside there will not qualify for Homestead tax benefits, so your property taxes will increase. What if your child has creditors or is involved in a lawsuit? Or what if he or she divorces? Finally, as your child is listed as an owner, they must sign off on any decision to sell or refinance the property. I like to save money. Can I obtain the necessary forms and submit them to the probate court myself without the expense of an attorney? In Florida, almost all probate cases require an attorney. There is a narrow exception for very small estates where the amount of assets are only sufficient to pay for the funeral and final expenses of the decedent. My cousin’s estate was settled in just a few months in Michigan, so I’m expecting the same experience in south Florida. Most simple estates can be settled within a year, however. because of staffing shortages and backlogs in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the process can take as long as 18 months. More complex estates may take several years to settle. I created a revocable living trust so I am not concerned about probate. A revocable living trust can help you avoid probate, but only if your trust is fully funded. With some important exceptions, all of your real property, personal property, cash and investment accounts and business interests should be transferred into your trust while you are alive. If your trust is not properly funded, many assets may still have to go through a probate after your death before reaching your trust and its beneficiaries. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? n Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. “At-Home Tourist” Summer Photo Contest Winners
W
inners of the 5th annual Art Council Summer Photo Contest were announced recently. The contest, presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston, featured the theme “At-Home Tourist.” Local amateur photographers were encouraged to “zoom in on something at, in, or near their homes” according to student intern and contest Co-Director Saxon Kennedy. “With so many people staying at home,” she noted, “I wanted to give participants an opportunity to look at the space around them with fresh eyes, and maybe discover some new source of joy.” Taking the top awards in this year’s contest were: ▸ 1st prize Terri Cannici (@terricannici) ▸ 2nd prize Liliana Solanilla (@lisobo) ▸ 3rd prize Caroline Portella (@carolineportella) ▸ Most liked: Liliana Solanilla Each of the winners will receive a cash prize and be part of a public photo exhibit. The contest was judged by a panel of art and photography experts including photographer Phoenix Marks, photographer Stacy Daugherty, former Weston resident and photographer Kalai Ramu, professional artist Lifrancis Rojas and former Arts

Council president Andrea Sanders. “We saw more total entries – a total of 244 qualified for the contest - and more variety in terms of subject matter this year than ever before,” noted Arts Council Vice President Carol Lema. “Our photographers were true at-home tourists, exploring subjects that caught their eyes or focusing in on objects in the environment to create an entirely new perspective.” Entries were shared on social media throughout the contest, which took place between June 17

and July 31, by local artist and contest Co-Director Lifrancis Rojas. “As the new ACGW Social media Director, I really enjoyed working during this year’s Instagram photo contest. It was amazing how during the month and a half that it lasted the participants kept evolving in their creativity. This year the number of entries were more than tripled from last year, it was a wonderful experience to be part of it. “. In previous years, a selection of photos from the contest has been exhibited at the Weston Branch Library. Due to health protocols, this year’s selection of photos will be exhibited via a large window display at Weston Town Center during the month of September. The photos may also be seen both on Instagram using the hashtag #acgwathome and on the Arts Council website www.1weston.com. Terri Cannici

Cypress Bay Welcomes New Band Director BY CHRISTY JAILLET
T
he Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder Marching Band will be stepping out under new leadership this year. The school welcomed Brett Dawson, as its new Director of Bands this summer. Dawson, who is a 30-year teaching veteran, spent the past 20 years as the Director of Bands at Coral Springs High School. He is originally from Kansas; he holds a master’s degree in music education from the University of Northern Colorado and is also an adjunct professor of trombone at Broward College. “I am honored to take over the Band Program at CBHS. I plan to build upon the previous foundations of a supportive community and energetic students,” commented Dawson on Cypress Bay’s historically successful music program. “Along with my years of experi-
ence, I plan on challenging the Band students to reach new heights of rigorous rehearsal technique. This will ultimately help achieve higher levels of performance at the local and state level events.” Adjusting to Virtual School has been quite challenging for the music program, however, the school has not seen a drop in band enrollment. “I believe we have maintained most originally enrolled Band students through the transition to virtual school,” commented Dawson. Dawson also pointed out the incredible contributions made by Head Drum Major, Gianna Chavez and Band Captain, Eve DaCosse over the summer to help prepare for virtual school. Everyone involved in the Band Program at Cypress Bay is anxious to get back to normal and the Sound of Thunder is slated to participate in several competitions in the first couple months of 2021. Only time will tell if these competitions will come
to fruition. The Jazz MPA is currently scheduled for February 18th and the Concert Band MPA is on March 10th-11th both at Dillard School for the Performing Arts. Check back in at Our City Weston for updates on these competitions. The students, parents, and community members of Weston welcome Mr. Dawson to Cypress Bay.

Children’s Fitness in the New Normal: TAG USA Gymnastics Gets Kids Moving Again! BY TERRY JAILLET
A
n unfortunate consequence of the coronavirus epidemic has been a massive reduction in children’s activity levels. It has not gotten better: schools are opening in remote-learning mode after a summer of lock-down. Few kids are getting the CDC recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Many parents simply don’t know what to do. Luckily, Weston’s TAG USA Gymnastics has the answer. Safe, Supervised Fun The long-time Weston gymnastics, trampoline, and parkour center has implemented a set of rigorous protocols to ensure kids stay safe while they get the exercise they need. Every person who walks through the doors must wash their hands, get their temperature checked, and wear a mask. Kids are required to wear masks unless they are actively participating in an athletic activity. In some ways, TAG’s sports are both fun and inherently safer than other sports. Gymnastics, trampoline, tumbling, and parkour do not require physical contact between competitors. Social distancing is part of the activity. The facility is also massive: Over 36,000 feet of open space helps mitigate close personal contact. Boys and Girls Classes TAG offers beginners to advanced daily classes for ages 2 through 18 in coed trampoline, tumbling, boys gymnastics, girls gymnastics, cheer, and parkour. Classes are coached by coaches with extensive training and, background checks and are monitored by the Recreational Director. Coaches are also trained in TAG’s COVID-19 protocol. Filling in the Gap When School is Closed TAG offers parents the opportunity to drop their kids off for much-needed physical activity in a clean, safe environment. As parents continue
to fill in the gaps created by distance learning, a TAG visit can help allot. The facility offers study rooms where students can catch up on their schoolwork while taking a break from the trampoline or balance beam. New Location, Best Equipment, Cradle of Champions TAG recently relocated to Westgate Square, at the north end of Weston Road. The new location is the largest facility in the area and is packed with clean, state of the art equipment. Some of the nation’s very best gymnasts have started at TAG. Simply look around the viewing area, and you will see the collection of trophies TAG USA Gymnastics has won at State, Regional and National competitions over the years. It is comforting to know that a local institution that has been working with South Florida’s youth for over 50 years, has adapted to these challenging times. Whether you have an aspiring athlete or a kid you’d like to get away from the Xbox for a couple of hours, TAG USA has something for you and your family.
n TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 15900 W State Road 84 in Weston. For more information, visit www.Taggymnastics.com, Call 954-384-9191 or follow TAG on Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat or Twitter.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Don’t Kit-Nap Kittens! A Kitten’s Best Chance of Survival Is With Its Mom
S
outh Florida shelters are taking to social media with a unified message, making a plea to the community; please Don’t Kit-Nap the Kittens! Every year shelters nationwide brace themselves for “kitten season,” and South Florida shelters receive thousands of kittens in the spring and summer months. When people find kittens outdoors without their mom, their first instinct may be to bring them inside or rush them to an animal shelter. Now in the peak of kitten season, Animal shelters throughout Broward warn well intention, good Samaritans that picking up found litters of kittens may be hurting them more than helping them. Research shows, when kittens are separated from their mother, their chances of survival drop significantly. In most cases, newborn litters of kittens don’t need human intervention and, in fact, taking the kittens is inadvertently creating orphaned kittens. The best thing is to keep the mother and kittens together to ensure the kittens’ best chances of survival, until the kittens are eating on their own and can be safely removed for socialization and adoption. What should you do when you find a litter of kittens? ▸ Do not interfere with the kittens as it may cause stress to the mother. If you really want to help, you can provide some food and water for the mother,
placed a good distance from the nest. ▸ If you don’t see mom around, observe the kittens from a distance. The mother may be out looking for food, but she will most likely return. ▸ If the kittens are in immediate danger, like under a car or in a flooded area, find a safe place nearby to move them, but make sure they’re still close enough for their mother to find them. ▸ If you have observed the kittens for 24 hours and are sure that the mother isn’t returning, you may pick them up and care for them. Newborn kittens need special care. ▸ If the mother comes back and is friendly, wait until the kittens are 2 pounds or 2 months old before bringing them and their mom to a veterinarian or to the Animal Services’ Pet Adoption and Protection Center to be vaccinated and spayed or neutered. What happens if newborn kittens are brought into the shelter without their mother? Kittens under four weeks of age need round the clock care which most shelters are not equipped to provide. Shelters rely on volunteer foster programs to supplement the care and needs of these newborn kittens. Unfortunately, when babies are separated from their moms it threatens their ability to thrive and survive, which is more reason to leave kittens with their mom. Orphaned kittens need to be bottle fed with special formula every two to three hours, then stimulated to eliminate, cleaned, and kept warm because at such a young age they cannot regulate their body temperature. Most shelters will provide you with everything needed to care for the newborn kittens. Once the foster kitten is old enough to transition to solid food and be spayed or neutered, that is at about 2-months-old or 2 pounds in weight, foster volunteers can bring the kittens back to the shelter so they can be placed up for adoption and find their forever homes. n For more information on how you can help kittens contact: Lisa Mendheim Broward County Animal Care 2400 SW 42nd St, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312 954-359-1010

eston’s public schools have continued their exceptional performance during the 2019-2020 school year. Our schools’ consistent outstanding reputation and results is part of the reason Weston is always near the top of “best places to live” lists. Weston’s schools achieved a perfect 4.0 according to The Florida Department of Education’s 2019-2020 Florida School Accountability Reports. Each of the eleven elementary, middle and high schools that serve the Weston community was rated A. The school grades provide an easily understandable way to measure the performance of a school. Parents can use the school grades and their components to understand how well each school is serving its students. Just like students, schools are graded on a A, B, C, D or F scale. The grading program is made up 11 components. There are four achievement components, four learning gains components, a middle school acceleration component as well as components for graduation rate and college & career acceleration. Congratulations to the students, teachers and administrators at Country Isles Elementary, Eagle Point Elementary, Everglades Elementary, Gator Run Elementary, Indian Trace Elementary, Manatee Bay Elementary, Falcon Cove Middle School, Tequesta Trace Middle School, Cypress Bay High School, Western High School and Imagine Charter School at Weston. Broward County Public Schools saw significant improvement in results across the district. Indian Trace Elementary Principal Amy Winder says she is proud that her school once again achieved “A+” status. “The key to our school’s success continues to be the partnership of inquisitive students, supportive and involved parents, and a staff that is committed to their own professional learning for the good of the students.” While congratulations are in order for each of Weston’s schools, this school year will be quite different. All of Weston’s public schools will be teaching students remotely for the beginning of this school year. Schools have made significant efforts to offer as many extracurricular activities as possible virtually. Teachers are engaging with students using a number of new technological tools, including Microsoft’s Teams platform which allows teachers to hold discussions and give lectures much like they would in person. With the wonderful teachers and the dedicated families involved, we are confident Weston’s success will continue.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Use in the Foot and Ankle. Get Back to Doing the Things You Enjoy! BY: CARLO A. MESSINA
H
ealing after an injury involves a wellorchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets. Platelets are small, colorless, cell fragments present in the blood. They are formed in the bone marrow and are freely passing through the bloodstream in a resting state. However, when an injury occurs, the platelets become activated and start to gather at the injury site to release beneficial proteins called growth factors. This is the beginning of the healing process. For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created
growing interest for use in orthopedic procedures. New research and technology have expanded the application of this therapy for use in orthopedic procedures. What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)? Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells. What conditions can it treat? ▸ Arthritis (Foot or Ankle) ▸ Ligament Injuries (Acute or Chronic) ▸ Tendon Injuries (Acute or Chronic) ▸ Joint Pain ▸ Chronic Inflammatory Conditions ▸ Achilles Tendonitis ▸ Plantar Fasciitis ▸ Chronic Nerve Irritation (Neuritis) ▸ Shin Splints ▸ Heel Spurs How does the PRP process work? Our doctors will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a
rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes. What happens after that? The injected area will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine). The blood with its PRP will be injected into the area directly or with the aid of ultrasound or x-ray. Am I a candidate for treatment with PRP? Speak with our doctors and ask if PRP is right for you. Dr. Messina will perform an examination to make a determination if the use of PRP will benefit you. If you are on anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place. What are the risks associated with this treatment? PRP uses your body’s own natural properties to treat your injury. Side effects utilizing PRP systems are very uncommon.

Cleveland Clinic Florida Named Best Hospital in South Florida BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he best gets better. Once again, Weston-based Cleveland Clinic Florida has been ranked as the No. 1 hospital in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area by U.S. News & World Report for the third consecutive year. The magazine’s annual Best Hospitals survey ranked 67 hospitals in South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties). This is the fourth time in the past five years that Cleveland Clinic Florida has earned this distinction. In addition, it is ranked fifth in the state out of the 269 hospitals reviewed. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery specialty continues to be nationally ranked, coming in at No. 29 for 2020-2021. Additionally, five specialties ranked as “high performing”, one more than the previous year. The high performing specialties include Geriatrics, Nephrology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, and
Pulmonary and Lung Services. For the third year in a row, Cleveland Clinic Florida rated “high performing” in all nine common conditions and procedures evaluated by the magazine. These include abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, colon cancer surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hip replacement, knee replacement, and lung cancer surgery. That’s not surprising when you consider that Cleveland Clinic Florida is the first hospital in region to offer a new treatment for COPD. Its Pulmonary Medicine Department is now performing this revolutionary non-surgical treatment which involves placing endobronchial valves in patients’ lungs to help them breathe easier. Cleveland Clinic Florida physicians are also credited with discovering a revolutionary breakthrough in gallbladder removal surgery. By using a novel intraoperative
imaging technique called near-infrared fluorescent cholangiography (NIFC), doctors are now able to dramatically reduce the risk of complications associated with gallbladder removal. In addition to cutting-edge science, Cleveland Clinic Florida has been at the forefornt of COVID-19 testing, research and treatment. They are currently hosting six different clinical trials focused on coronavirus treatment. Cleveland Clinic Florida CEO and President Wael Barsoum, MD, says it is an honor to be recognized for its
commitment to high quality care. “This recognition belongs to our outstanding team of caregivers who are dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of our patients. I am proud of the world-class care they provide and their commitment to putting our patients first every day.” U.S. News & World Report publishes its annual Best Hospitals list to guide patients who need a high level of care because they face a particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient safety, survival rates, nurse staffing and other data are used to determine the rankings in most specialties. n To see a complete list of the ranked hospitals go to www.usnews.com/hospitals.

POSITIVE PARENTING
Make Expectations Realistic BY IVIS MATEOS
N
ow it’s been a couple weeks since school began for some of our students while others are just getting ready to take off with the new year. The world as we knew it is somewhat gone and now we are all learning to adapt to different ways and opportunities to learn and educate our children. Perhaps you are one of the families that choose to take your child back to on-campus learning and then there are others that have no choice but to have their child attend school virtually from home. In either case we are all challenged to change the ways we were used to. Change is not always a bad thing. We need to value each chapter for its strengths and weaknesses and make the best out of it for the sake of our own, and our children’s mental health. Children study their surroundings, and will adapt their behavior and methods as they are guided with kindness and sternness. Children mimic what the adults are expressing around them. Therefore, it’s important that we become flexible throughout this new process in order to diminish stress and anxiety. Use simple language to explain the changes we are going through, for example; “today we get to spend time with your teacher online doing fun things & learning” or “when class is over we will go out for a fun walk”. For the students going to school, it’s also best to prepare them and be honest about the changes in safety procedures. Reassure the child that they will be safe at school and explain they can do things like wash their hands often, wear a mask and keep themselves at a safe distance when cough-

ing or sneezing to keep everyone healthy. Encourage your children to ask questions about their concerns and also about their experiences and reassure them everything is going to be alright. Our expert in education and preschool director, Ms. Molly Brousseau, believes “children are not given enough credit for what they truly understand. Even at an early age, you need to remember that the only knowledge the child is obtaining is that of what is explained and shown to them by the adults in their lives.” And most importantly mom and dad, don’t forget that we are all in this together and we can work to make the process smoother and take every experience as an opportunity to learn and become a better and stronger community. n Ivis Mateos is a mother of two boys and has more than 24 years combined experience in educational consulting and management. In addition to earning her National Administrator Credential, Mateos has led workshops on curriculum development, teacher development, and parenting. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation
Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

COMMUNITY NEWS
Weston Says Goodbye to Roger Lander By Christy Jaillet
T
he Weston community lost a kind man, friend to many, and a champion of the arts on August 13th. The Weston Music Society announced that long time Roswell resident and former Music Society President, Roger Lander passed away. “Roger Lander was the consummate professional not only in his real estate career but as a philanthropist, as a Weston Rotarian and Past Present of the Weston Music Society, he was always giving so selflessly of his time, especially his amazing piano abilities and charming personality.” Commented friend, colleague and fellow Weston Music Society board member, Rose Sklar, “He will be truly missed.”
A long term member of the Weston Rotary Club, Lander was known to be an extremely giving person with both his time and money. Roger was a native of New York and graduated from Hofstra University. He worked for over 25 years as a realtor in South Florida and Weston in particular. Roger was a great patron of the arts, especially music in Weston. His passion for music led to him becoming President of the Weston Music Society and his championing many of the society’s initiatives that we all enjoy today. In lieu of flowers, Roger’s wife, D.J. asks that mourners make a donation in Roger’s name to the Weston Music Society.

Our CBD Store® offers a comfortable and inviting environment where guests can learn about CBD, try samples, and feel empowered to make a confident choice on the best cannabinoid formulation option for them. There organic growth and dedication to bettering the community through transparent product information from high-quality premium product lines, backed by third-party laboratory testing makes CBD’s products stand apart. “We are not just another retail chain. We are a community of store owners who truly care and are educating CBD consumers around the nation,” said Sunrise founder Angel. Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, maybe one of the most broadly therapeutic plan extracts of our time. It comes from the cannabis Sativa plant. The CBD at Your CBD Store, however, does not come from the USDA defined marijuana plant, rather it comes from “industrial hemp.” This distinction is what makes the extract legal as well as differences in medical applications. Along with its lengthy list of therapeutic properties, CBD has the backing of many in the medical community, including the World Health Organization, the nursing community, and even many veterinarians. All of the CBD products offered at Your CBD Store are 100% free of THC and use a special CO2 extraction process that eliminates the need for any chemical solvents. ■ Your CBD Store® is located at 3801 North University Drive, Sunrise. Staying Safe in Our New Virtual Reality BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY he COVID-19 pandemic has altered our way of life and how we go about our daily routines. For many, kitchen and dining room tables have become the new office, classroom or social meeting place. Virtual is the new reality, and while it allows us to continue to work, learn and socialize safely, it comes with its own unique set of challenges and dangers. As we transition to using more online platforms, scammers, hackers and other cybercriminals are finding new, lucrative and sometimes dangerous ways to target people. At the Broward Sheriff’s Office, in addition to ensuring the safety of our physical streets, we are also dedicated to protecting our online neighborhoods — especially when it comes to the safety of our children. With Broward public schools having begun their year fully remote, kids have had to adapt to extended hours behind their digital devices and the increased risks associated with them. It is important that we protect our children’s ability to learn and play online safely. Recently, we’ve seen an increase in phishing scams through email and text messages. Aside from malware, ransomware, spyware and other dangers designed to steal personal information and money, these scams also pose a significant risk to children, who are perfect targets for identity theft because of their clean credit histories. In 2017, more than one million children were victims of identity theft or fraud, and that number continues to grow. In addition, with social distancing as the new norm, socialization has turned even more digital than ever before. Parents must pay special attention to who their children are interacting with online and in what manner. Unfortunately, cyberbullying is rampant and has been linked to a variety of negative effects, including anxiety, depression and substance abuse. Here are some important reminders on what you can do to help keep your children safe: • Always be aware, and monitor what your children are doing on all their devices. • Always keep close tabs on who your child is interacting with online. • Look out for anything that is out of the ordinary, including unusual messages, advertisements and emails. • Keep your firewall, antivirus, antispyware and operating system up to date. • Ensure your child’s social media accounts are set to private and accessible only to pre-approved family and friends. • Make sure your child never gives your home address or location to anyone they meet online. • Have a talk with them, and reinforce a basic practice of online safety: think before you click. We are living in unprecedented times with unfamiliar threats. But by being vigilant and prudent, we can keep our kids and our community safe from cybercrime.

BY EVAN H. BARON, ESQ. here is a saying often used in family law, which is that “if you have children, you are never divorced”. I repeat that saying several times each week to both existing and new clients. The concept being that even after a divorce is finalized; there are still potential problems which may arise. If you have the opportunity to read a Final Judgment of Dissolution of Marriage, the Court will retain jurisdiction in the matter. That is to ensure that if issues arise, the parties have the legal right to petition the court for relief. There are some issues however which cannot be re-litigated. A large percentage of my practice is devoted to “post judgment matters” such as child support, alimony, custody, visitation, and parental relocation. All of the above matters can be addressed by the court if there is a failure to comply with an existing court order or of due to a “substantial change in circumstance” one of the parties is seeking a modification. So, for instance, if the designated parent is not receiving his/her child support than an enforcement action can be brought. If one of the parents loses his/her job through no fault of their own, then a modification to reduce either child support or alimony can be filed. If one of the parents is not allowing scheduled visitation or if due to a change in circumstance the visitation schedule must be changed, a modification proceeding can be filed. Of course, not every issue can be re-litigated. The equitable distribution of assets and debts is a matter which cannot be disturbed after the Final Judgment, unless the parties themselves reach an agreement or one of the parties can prove fraud or coercion in the original agreement. In addition, child support cannot be increased unless the party seeking an increase can show a substantial change in income which would result in an increase of at least $50.00 per month or 15% over the existing monthly payment. Of course, one can never attempt to overturn an agreement simply because he/she has changed their minds and now feels it is perhaps unfair. I always try and tie up all loose ends when finalizing an agreement between the parties. The last thing either party wants is continued litigation, which means continued stress and continued attorney’s fees. Sometimes a matter can be resolved by the parties simply discussing the matter. I am always amazed at how often issues can be resolved by a simple phone call, letter, or E-mail. If both parties truly want what is best for their child, then a compromise should not be so difficult. Unfortunately, some parties wish to continue the litigation based upon emotional issues. This is never a good idea and more often than not it is the children who suffer.

ASK THE EXPERT
Which Breast Surgery Is Right for You? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
A
ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. Periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), an inverted “T”, or anchor incision same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold. All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or 56 SEPTEMBER 2020 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed.

Weston Has More Than Its Share of COVID Cases BY TERRY JAILLET
R
esidents of Weston have tested positive for COVID-19 at more than twice the rate of greater Broward County, according to an analysis conducted by Our City. Data from the group Florida COVID Action was analyzed in conjunction with U.S. Census data to determine population positive rates for each city in Broward County. 5,760 Weston residents have tested positive for COVID-19 as of August 16th. This represents about 8.5% of the total reported positive test results in Broward County, while the city only accounts for 3.8% of the population. According to the site, 68,139 Broward residents have tested positive thus far. The large coastal cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Pompano Beach join Weston with above-average positive cases. Pembroke Pines, Parkland, Cooper City and Plantation have the lowest rates of positive cases according to the data. It is unclear why Weston has higher reported positive results than neighboring communities. Very little analysis has been done on the differences in disease spread at the local level. Testing rates, differing working environments and how strictly social distancing guidelines are adhered to are all believed to be contributors to the variances. School Reopening It is also unclear how the reopening of school will impact the spread of the disease. Recent outbreaks at the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina have some experts concerned that
the new school year will reignite the spread. Broward County Public Schools, Miami Dade County, and Palme Beach County all began the school year with students studying remotely while South Florida private schools have implemented a myriad of safety protocols in an effort to limit the spread of the virus. Trends In Cases, Hospitalizations The trend in reported cases across Broward County is on a positive trend. After daily counts have accelerated for eight consecutive weeks, the number of newly reported positive test results has
declined over the past three weeks. The number of Broward residents hospitalized with COVID has also declined in recent weeks. Hospitalizations appear to have peaked mid-July. Public health experts are quick to caution recent results won’t get us ‘back to normal’ any time soon. National Institute of Health Director, Dr. Anthony Fauci, summed up our situation. “If ‘back to normal’ means acting like there never was a coronavirus problem, I don’t think that is going to happen until we have widespread adoption of a vaccine.”

REAL ESTATE
Pent Up Demand Results in a Robust Seller’s Market BY ROSE SKLAR
A
s 2020 rolled in during its first-quarter real estate was experiencing robust growth over the same quarter in 2019. As we all have experienced, this growth track appeared to be halted by a worldwide pandemic, however, this halt was only momentarily and the effects have resulted in pent up demand and Realtors across South Florida have been busy selling property. As we go back to work and start returning to the market, we begin to see a V-shaped recovery in the housing sector. If you build it they will come. As newly selected agents selling new construction locally, the demand is high. Why is the pent up demand so great? Keep in mind, sellers took their homes off the market, for fear of catching the virus. Others decided not to come to the market and wait and see. Now, with the inventory at historic lows and the 30-year mortgage rates at the lowest level in history, people are coming out of the woodwork and taking advantage of this market. New mortgage applications are up over 30% in July as reported by Brian Franks at Guaranteed Rate. Buyers are out looking for alternatives from urban living preferring a single-family home with a yard, a pool, a playroom, a home office, or extra space for the family to “quarantine”. “The National Association of Realtors data indicates an increase in the demand for real estate transactions, and this is what we’re seeing, as well, across South Florida, with Coldwell Banker Realty
agents increasingly busy with listings and closed sales, even in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.” The graph below shows the last 2 years, showing that July year over year is up 33% in pending sales for Weston across the board and almost 50% is

now pending (or under contract) Predictions for 2020 Real Estate market Many high-density cities such as New York and Chicago may see a grand exodus to the suburbs again. Many who have given up the family home with a yard for the kids and dog and usable square footage, may now after the crisis find themselves longing for their own private yard, pool, and gym again. Many jobs will now become more virtual as we move into our new normal. As we are entering the digital explosion, virtual staging, virtual open houses, zoom listing, and buyer consultations appointments have and will become the norm. All of these related industries must now embrace the technology, the videography, and the virtual reality of our future in real estate. Realtors are seeing a continued surge of buyers, in particular leaving and moving to South Florida from high tax states such as NY, NJ, and more. In particular, those buyers who have the means to buy a second home or investment property are actively looking and buying. Winterfest 2020 Boat Parade is The Latest Casualty of COVID-19 BY JON DUKA
The 2020 Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade slated for Saturday, Dec. 12, has been canceled due to ongoing coronavirus concerns. The announcement of the cancellation followed a unanimous vote of the Winterfest Board of Directors to forego the 2020 boat parade. Related Winterfest live events will also be canceled this year. Organizers of the annual holiday celebration, one of the nation’s most popular community events, are instead focusing on the 50th Anniversary Year Boat Parade event in December of 2021. The first Winterfest Boat Parade took place in December 1971. “Our team, partners, and community supporters were very hopeful for the traditional holiday boat parade to continue in December,” said Lisa Scott-Founds, President and CEO of Winterfest, Inc. “This was a very difficult decision, but we are being proactive and socially responsible for the health and safety of our community. That is our top priority.” Television Special Still Planned for this December In addition to the 50th Anniversary events in 2021, organizers will concentrate this year on the annual television special focusing on the Best of the Parade with a “Home for the Holidays” theme. The 2020 television special, produced by WSVN Channel 7, will blend the retrospect and a combination of special surprises. The television special scheduled to air in December will bring the best of the best of decorated boats into the comfort of viewers’ homes. The special will air again on Christmas and New Year’s

Day along with additional airings on Fox Sports Sun. The “Home for the Holidays,” message will envelop a three-month campaign of virtual events leading up to the television show, including passive decorating entries of homes, businesses, boats, and docks. “We are bringing a hometown feel of family, friends, and parade partners to this year’s special,” said Lisa Scott-Founds. “Winterfest 2020 is a reflection of our community’s heart and hope.” Winterfest is developing new simulated experiences with a touch of tradition such as picking this year’s Jr. Captain with the Winterfest Foundation, a Coloring Competition, Cookies with Santa, Video Greetings, Flashbacks of Fan Favorite Entries, and Celebrity Grand marshals along with a few local sightings of the Parade’s beloved mascot “Skippy” and Santa’s Elves. Winterfest’s annual online auction promises to be one of the largest holiday shopping experiences with over 250 items from jewelry, travel, dinners, and more. For more information as Winterfest builds with partner opportunities focusing on this year’s television special and the 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2021, contact the office at info@winterfestparade.com or call 954-767-0686.

Best Ways To Protect Your Eyes BY DR. JANE THERRIEN OD, FIAOMC

he sun supports life on our planet, but its life-giving rays also pose dangers. The sun’s primary danger is in the form of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Artificial sources, like welding machines, tanning beds and lasers, can also produce UV radiation. Most people are aware of how harmful UV radiation is to the skin. However, many may not realize that UV radiation can harm the eyes, and other components of solar radiation can also affect vision. There are three types of UV radiation. UV-C is absorbed by the ozone layer and does not present any threat. However, UV-A and UV-B radiation can have longand short-term negative effects on the eyes and vision. If your eyes are exposed to excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you will likely experience photokeratitis. Like a “sunburn of the eye,” photokeratitis can be painful. Its symptoms include red eyes, a foreign body sensation or gritty feeling in the eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. Fortunately, these symptoms are usually temporary and rarely cause permanent damage to the eyes. The longer the eyes are exposed to solar radiation, the greater the risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration later in life. It is not clear how much exposure to solar radiation will cause damage. Therefore, when-

Putting Is Personal BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL
H
aving a balanced, smooth swinging stroke is of crucial importance when putting. The image I use to visualize this is that of a pendulum – something that swings slow and steadily through a complete arc of motion, with even tempo throughout. The end of the putter forms the bottom of the pendulum, your arms provide the smooth motion. Having a firm, balanced, solid base is an important part of putting. You need to hit the ball at the right point in your arc and get it going in a straight line. Putting your feet in the right place and connecting to the ground properly facilitates this. You want to have your feet about shoulder width apart and your eyes are more or less over the ball. On putts of more than 30 feet in distance, pace is much more important than line. Remember, a 2-putt is all you’re aiming for, so the first putt is all about getting the distance right. A useful trick to help you with this task is to visualize a circle the size of a street manhole cover around the hole. Your goal is to get the ball within this circle in order to make the second putt an easy one. Turning up at a golf course and expecting to perform well straightaway is unrealistic. Before going to the first tee, it pays to do a little practice or warm-up. Get yourself over to the practice green, get a bunch of balls and practice your putting stroke and get a feel for distance and pace on the greens. It’s all about building confidence for the real thing. Putting is so much about touch and feel, especially when it comes to judging distance. The next time you’re on the practice green working on distance putts, try closing your eyes on a few before and during the stroke. As long as you’re set up well there’ll be no problem in hitting the ball
okay. With your eyes closed, focus on how the stroke feels, how the hands absorb the impact of the ball on the putter face. Open your eyes and see how you did for distance. Close them again and keep practicing until you develop a sense for how good lag putting feels as well as looks. Don’t be tempted to spend long amounts of time agonizing over how different putts are going to break. As long as you’ve worked out an approximation of borrow, a ball to the right or inside left edge for example, just play the shot and don’t dwell on it. Your green reading skills will improve with time and experience. Just like with the longer clubs or indeed any shot in golf, you must develop a routine and stick to it. Obviously, careful thought and planning should go into any decent putting routine. Ask your local PGA Professional to challenge you to a putting match on the practice green and see the way they line up their putts and go through their own routine. Remember, practice makes perfect. The Top 4 Things You Can Do Today To Protect Your Children In The Future BY: WENDY HILL ELDEIRY, ESQUIRE ELDEIRY & ELDEIRY, P.A.
I
f you are a parent, you likely spend a large amount of time in your day to day life working hard to ensure that your children are protected and taken care of at all times. But have you ever considered what would happen to your children if something unexpected occurred and you were no longer there to care for them. While we all hope we’ll live to a ripe old age, we never know what tomorrow holds. It is wise to take measures to ensure that your children will be cared for in the future, even if you are not there to care for them yourself. In today’s blog post, we’re looking at four things you can do right away to make sure your children are protected no matter what the future holds. 1. Make a Revocable Trust. Trusts are a useful estate planning tool. After you pass away, they can help your loved ones avoid the hassles and expenses involved with Probate Court. Trusts also have the added benefit of letting you grant a trusted individual (called a trustee) the ability to manage the assets you’ve worked hard to accumulate, on behalf of your children until they reach a certain age, where they are a bit more financially responsible than the age of 18. 2. Create or update your will. If you want to protect your children, it is essential to have a will in place. Your will is a document in which you dictate what you would like to have happen to your assets after you pass away. How do you want your assets to be distributed among your children? Should other loved ones inherit as well? Your will is your children’s greatest protection against inheritance theft. It also names who you would like to be the guardian of any minor children who are left behind when you pass away 3. Take out a life insurance policy. If you have dependent children, life insurance is a very important financial tool. A good policy will take care of your children’s living expenses, educational costs, etc. if you suddenly pass away. Without a life insurance policy, it is likely that your family will need to use your resources and investments to pay off your expenses like your mortgage and debts. This might leave your children with very little or even nothing. 4. Name a guardian. Who will care for your children if you pass away before they turn 18? The guardian that you name in your Will will assume all of your responsibilities. It will be up to him or her to make sure your kids are cared for and pay for their educational expenses if there’s nothing left from your estate. A guardian will also be responsible for your child’s finances until they reach the age of 18. If you do not name a guardian yourself, courts will appoint one. Only you really know who is the best choice for this role, so make sure you express your wishes in your estate plan. If you want to make sure your children will be protected no matter what, the ElDeiry & ElDeiry team is here for you. We can help with all the steps above and can give you the peace of mind that your estate plan complies with all relevant state laws, so your wishes won’t be disregarded over any technicalities. If you’re ready to get started on your estate plan or need other legal guidance, please contact ElDeiry & ElDeiry today at (954) 670-2800.

have an annual dental examination and cleaning performed by your veterinarian, who will thoroughly evaluate your pet’s entire mouth as well as her face, head, and lymph nodes. The exam will be followed by a professional cleaning to remove plaque, stains, and tartar both above and below the gumline. Your veterinarian will also remove the bacteria that can cause gum disease and take an x-ray of your pet’s teeth to check for potential problems. In order for your veterinarian to perform a proper dental examination and cleaning and to visualize all of your pet’s teeth—even those in the back of the mouth—your pet will need to be anesthetized. While there is always a slight risk whenever anesthesia is used, today’s anesthetic agents are extremely safe. To enhance safety, your veterinarian will recommend relevant preanesthetic testing for your pet to make sure there are no hidden health problems that could be affected by the anesthesia. Signs of Dental Problems Drooling, red or bleeding gums, stained teeth, loose or missing teeth, bad breath and difficulty eating. Dental Care at Home In between your pet’s examinations and professional cleanings, you should follow your veterinarian’s advice regarding home dental care for your pet, including daily teeth brushing and special dental care diets and treats. From the time your pet is young, you should begin getting her gradually accustomed to having her mouth opened, her teeth touched, and her gums massaged. Ask your veterinarian for advice on the best way to brush your pet’s teeth, but generally you can start by touching one tooth a day and gradually increasing the number over a period of days, weeks, or even months. Once your pet becomes used to having something in her mouth, you can start brushing her teeth with a special pet toothbrush. (Be sure to use pet toothpaste only. Human toothpaste can be upsetting to pets’ stomachs.) If your pet seems afraid of the toothbrush, try using a small piece of gauze wrapped around your finger to start. If your pet becomes agitated or will otherwise not allow you to touch her mouth or teeth, do not risk being bitten. Contact your veterinarian for advice. You may simply need to schedule your pet for more frequent dental examinations and professional cleanings. The Bottom Line Oral disease is one of the biggest health problems diagnosed in dogs and cats today, so it is essential for owners to provide pets with good dental care, both professionally and at home. The fact is that your furry friend will live longer and be healthier if her teeth are properly cared for at all stages of life. n Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”.
