A Bountiful Harvest
T
he month of October often conjures up images of harvests, autumn and falling leaves. Watching leaves turn red and fall is less of a common occurrence here than for our friends up north. Agriculture is, however, still an important part of Broward County and South Florida. According to the USDA’s 2012 Census of Agriculture, there were almost 15 thousand acres of land being used for farming in Broward County. This farmland generates about $50 million a year in livestock and crop sales. These figures do not include the well-established horse economy in Plantation, Davie and Southwest Ranches. While most of Broward County is built out with neighborhoods, city parks and commercial developments, there are still over 600 farms producing everything from bell peppers to beef. These farms preserve a past where much of West Broward was composed of ranches and orange groves. There are a number of farms and nurseries where residents can buy locally grown produce. Check out our calendar section each month to find farmers markets in your area. Remember, October harvests happen in paradise too!

UltraShape Power is the first & only FDA cleared non-surgical procedure that uses pulsed, focused ultrasound for fat cell destruction. UltraShape Power painlessly destroys fat cells without harming surrounding skin, nerves or blood vessels.
The CoolSculpting fat-freezing procedure is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fatreduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise. The results are proven, noticeable, and lasting— so you’ll look great from every angle.
VelaShape uses vacuum & roller technology to manipulate your skin while infrared light (IR) and bi-polar radio frequency (RF) energies will gently heat fat cells and surrounding tissue. Over the course of your treatments, you will notice a reduction in both circumference and in the appearance of cellulite in the treated areas.
SculpSure helps you safely reduce stubborn fat and tighten skin in problem areas such as the belly and love handles, with a treatment plan that’s customized to your desired results.
Exilis Ultra 360 is a non-invasive device that tightens skin to improve fine lines and wrinkles in the face, neck or body by using radio frequency energy to stimulate collagen. It can also help reduce fat by heating the deeper layers of the skin and causing fat cells to shrink.
The BodyLogic™ scan provides an accurate picture of muscle, bone & fat mass that aids in the design of a customized weight loss & body contouring program.

The City of Weston has planned an exciting line-up of free programs to keep you busy in the coming months. It all starts this month with the return of the Moonlight Movies in the Park series. A full-length feature film will be shown on a giant inflatable screen at Weston Regional Park on select Saturday nights through April. It kicks off with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle on October 6th. The band Turnstiles will take the event stage at Weston Regional Park on Saturday, December 15th. Admission is free, and families are welcome. Bring your own lawn chairs and come early to get good seating, and to enjoy the food truck offerings. The concert series continues in February and March with music of different genres. While foreign films and rock concerts may appeal to a more mature audience, there are plenty of programs just for kids this season beginning with a free Magic Show starring magician Gary Midnight on Saturday, November 3rd. He will leave the audience spellbound with his amazing gifts of illusion. The family fun continues with a puppet show by Bob Nathanson and

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 10/31/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. Along the way, he meets a charming trickster and together they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history. Coco is rated PG. Showtime is at 8pm on November 3rd. Moviegoers will be treated to another musical movie with The Greatest Showman on December 8th. Inspired by the imagination of P. T. It stars Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, and Zendaya.
Showtime is at 7:30pm. This film is rated PG. In an effort to present new releases, the City of Weston has not yet selected its spring movie titles. However, the dates have been set for the 2019 Moonlight Movies in the Park shows: January 12th, February 2nd, March 2nd and April 6th. All movies are projected onto a giant inflatable screen at the Event Stage inside Weston Regional Park, next to the Weston Community Center. Moviegoers should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Coolers are permitted, but alcohol is not allowed in the park. Children must be accompanied by an adult. n For more information on the Moonlight Movies in the Park series call 954-3894321 or check out the Calendar of Events at www.westonfl.org.

BY ROSE SKLAR hen determining whether a real estate market is either a buyer’s market or a seller’s market, you have to look at several factors: time of year, price point, location. Typically, when inventory is high, we have a buyer’s market and when inventory is low, we experience a seller’s market. According to Inman.com real estate news, economic analysts report that it will not be a buyer’s market until 2020. However, that is a generalization across the country and real estate is local in nature. Micro markets like Weston perform differently. Presently in Weston, the under $500K price range is clearly a seller’s market. We are seeing the shift in other price points as well where inventory is increasing. Weston has always had a unique market. The Weston market is currently two-fold. The big denomination is price range and zip code. Today in Weston, there is high inventory of luxury homes priced over $1 million. The luxury market is currently experiencing longer days on market because, although the luxury buyer pool remains steady, property values have consistently increased since 2011. This, in turn, has pushed a higher number of properties over the $1 million luxury threshold to come to the market. As well, the Weston population is shifting and creating a cycle where empty nesters are looking for smaller or more urban settings to call home. Their children are now coming to Weston to raise their families. As of July 2018, according to the multiple listing service, we currently have 33 months of inventory over $1 million in Weston, with approximately two buyers per month. On the flip side, millennial buyers, who are now aging into first time home buying status, have been slower to buy, generally having children later than previous generations with much more emphasis spent on lifestyle, yards for dogs and walkability. Both generations are vying for the same inventory of homes, making the under $500K a seller’s market with only 2.8 months of inventory (per MLS July 2018). This can create a bidding war. Just recently, one of our buyers purchased a home in Weston where there were four offers fighting for the under $400K home. Memories came sweeping back of 2007 when buyers were removing appraisal contingencies and inspections. The buyer pool is very strong in the under $500 price point. There is now more demand for affordable start up homes with the growing millennial population and surge of empty nester buyers who are now downsizing. This market is more in line with a seller’s market, where multiple offers are again being received, especially in homes with recent upgrades or strategically priced. These homes are being gobbled up. Lastly, for the Weston homeowner, it is important that they keep up their current home maintenance and timely updates, like adding Smart Home accessories and efficient A/C and appliances, as well as roof upkeep. Updating the kitchen, bathroom and floors, which are high return items when selling a home, is also important. This holds true for all price points in Weston.

BY DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN ire Prevention Week brings remembrance to the Great Chicago Fire which occurred on October 8th, 1871, causing unprecedented damage. The remnants of this great fire left more than 100,000 people homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 homes and businesses, and claimed the lives of over 250 people. Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week with educational messages and safety tips to help prevent this atrocity from ever occurring again. This year’s NFPA education campaign of “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” brings recognition to the three basic steps to take to stay fire safe. ▸▸ “LOOK” for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them. The most common causes of house fires are from unattended cooking, overloaded outlets or extension cords, curious children, and dryer vents that have gone too long between cleanings. A few simple rules will help minimize most risks: ▸▸ Cooking on the stove top – stay alert and in the kitchen ▸▸ Cooking in the oven – stay alert and remain in the house ▸▸ Never use more appliances than the outlet is rated for. Extension cords are for temporary use and should never be placed under a carpet. ▸▸ Children are curious about fire, NEVER leave unattended candles, matches or lighters. Make sure they stay far out of reach of inquisitive hands. ▸▸ Dryer vents, not just the screen at the front of the dryer but from the back of the dryer to the outside, should be cleaned annually. A good indication that your vents are in need of attention is if your dryer is taking longer than 60 minutes to completely dry a standard sized load. ▸▸ “LISTEN” for the sound of the smoke alarm and test them regularly. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Get out and stay out and go to your meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home but away from the street. ▸▸ Some smoke alarms have replaceable batteries that need to be changed twice a year. The NFPA recommends to change the batteries when you change your clock. ▸▸ NFPA recommends replacing your smoke alarm every ten years ▸▸ “LEARN” two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter. ▸▸ Create a home safety plan and review the plan with your entire family. Practice your plan often and at different times of the day. Make sure your entire family knows where to meet and how to call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. ▸▸ If you have a two-story home or greater, make your plan of how you would get out if the door is blocked by fire. As the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services ramps up its outreach efforts this month, firefighters will be visiting elementary schools and preschools throughout Weston to teach children about this year’s theme and other critical fire-safety tips. To learn more about “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” visit NFPA’s Web site at www.firepreventionweek.org and www. sparky.org/fpw.

FEATURE STORY
Raising the Roof – For Decades Roof Treatment, Inc. Has Raised the Bar in Roof Cleaning BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or over 25 years, Roof Treatment Inc. has raised the bar on keeping roofs clean. Years of working with communities, contractors, roofing manufacturers, and the EPA has allowed the South Florida company to research and develop the safest and most cost-effective solutions to common roof problems such as stains and the need for repeated cleanings. The structural/cosmetic integrity of a roof needs to be a top priority for homeowners. Without proper maintenance, the entire home is at risk for damage. Tropical weather conditions, especially here in South Florida, promote accelerated mold growth, which besides being unsightly if left unchecked may pose potential health problems. The expert roof cleaners have the ONLY roof cleaning and stain prevention product that is EPA approved as well as the ONLY one approved by EVERY major roof manufacturer. RoofA-Cide ® actually PREVENTS unsightly roof stains for years with each treatment. It is guaranteed and effective on materials such as: asphalt shingles, concrete tiles, clay tiles, stone-coated metal and slate. Choosing a qualified company is always challenging, but the following information will help homeowners determine what works best for their type of roof and assist in separating those “here today-gone tomorrow” operations from the professional and
highly reputable companies. Identify Your Roof Type. This is the first and most important step to take. Do not assume cleaning companies will do this for you. A properly maintained roof should last 25 – 30 years. This is quite a lengthy “relationship” and knowing how to properly care for your home’s roof will help you maintain the warranties and save you the added expense and headache of prematurely replacing the roof do to negligence/damage. Common roof materials are asphalt shingle, clay, concrete tile, and stone coat steel. Check with the manufacturer recommendations to ensure that the proposed cleaning methods will not void your manufacture warranty. When Evaluating A Roof Cleaning Service, Be Aware of the Following: Chlorine Bleach. Chlorine based cleaning methods may be an option, but you need to know some key facts. Strong chlorine solutions damage the roof, corrode metal flashings, and compromise integrity of the underlayment by drying out the oils that give your underlayment its waterproof protectant barrier. This may void workmanship warranties, which leaves the homeowner responsible for costly repairs. Manufacturers typically recommend using household bleach, which is 6-10% active or highly diluted Chlorine. Chlorine is 100% active and also leaves behind a salt residue, which feeds and accelerates future mold growth.
The Oak Ridge community roof “before” using Roof-A-Cide.
The Oak Ridge community roof “after” using Roof-A-Cide.
Regardless of the detergent/cleaning agent used, it must be thoroughly rinsed off afterwards. This avoids leaving any residue or potential penetration of underlayment. Pressure Cleaning. Certain roof surfaces, such as tile and concrete roof structures can tolerate pressure cleaning. However, pressure cleaning is not a long-term solution to keeping your roof clean. Experienced and knowledgeable cleaning service is imperative. Improper foot traffic and poor equipment calibration can wreak havoc on your roof. Some companies will use chlorine to cut labor time and cost. Be sure that in addition to choosing a company that specializes in roof cleaning, ask, what, if any, cleaning agents they intend to use on your roof. **Be advised: Stone Coat Steel and Asphalt Shingle structures should NEVER be pressure cleaned. Algaecides/Preventative Products. Mold preventative products are an excellent follow up to a roof cleaning. While filtering through options ask these following questions: Is the product endorsed by roofing manufacturers? Are you being offered a warranty on the product’s effectiveness against mold/mildew? If so, get it in writing, and read the fine print! Learn what is covered, which company is covering it, and what recourse you may have in the event that you need to call on it. The warranty is also only good if the company who issued it is in business. Be aware of newly established companies as well. You can verify businesses on www. Sunbiz.org. Also, have the contractor explain how the product works, to ensure that you are not being sold a roof cleaning agent posing as a
mold preventative product. One particular product that is dominating the South Florida market for over 20 years is Roof-A-Cide ®. Roof-ACide ® is a copper based, EPA approved mold preventative product offering a Two Year written warranty. Applicators using this product must be trained and authorized by the manufacture. Warranties are backed by the product manufacture as well as the Applicator that applied it. Experience & Qualifications. Roof cleaning doesn’t require a significant outlay of cash for equipment. Smaller pressure washing, painting, and window cleaning contractors are adding roof cleaning to their menu of services without having real experience and knowledge of basic roofing structure. Using due care is extremely important, and the ideal roof cleaning service should be knowledgeable about roof cleaning and stain prevention. If you’re considering having your roof cleaned, do some basic research to ensure that your chosen contractor is licensed, insured, and qualified to work on your roof. Check with your roofers and neighbors for recommendations. Word of mouth is the most honest form of advertisement. Roof Treatment Inc., located in Broward County, offers cleaning methods for most roof surfaces. They are an authorized Roof-A-Cide ® applicator family owned company with 15+ years of experience in roof cleaning and stain prevention. n For more information, you can call Roof Treatment Inc. at 954-275-1831 or visit them at 2045 SW 127th Avenue in Davie. You can also check out the exclusive Roof-A-Cide ® product at www.roof-a-cide.com.

Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This 3D technology is available at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Breast Center at the Weston-main campus and at the new Coral Springs Family Health Center. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” Maria Artze, MD says Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.”
The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses Cassann Blake, MD and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy
(tissue sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.” To schedule a consultation with Dr. Blake or Dr. Margaret Thompson in Weston or Coral Springs, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/BreastCancer.

Weston BSO Fire Rescue Shares Halloween Safety Tips BY STACEY BOMSER
I
n just a few short weeks, the streets will be filled with princesses and pirates, ghosts and goblins, and superheroes and sports stars. While Halloween can be a fun night for families, it can also be dangerous. Although the fear of poisoned or tampered treats still persists among parents, research shows very few cases occur each year. The real danger is pedestrian injuries and other accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than twice as many children are killed in pedestrian/vehicle accidents on Halloween between 4pm and 10pm as compared to the same hours on other days throughout the year. Weston District Fire Chief Todd Draizin offers the following tips to ensure a safe and happy Halloween: Walk Safely ▸▸ Always use the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, then walk facing traffic and as far to the left as possible. ▸▸ Look left, right and left again when crossing the street and keep looking as you cross. ▸▸ Cross the street only at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks when available. ▸▸ Teach children to always make eye contact with the driver before crossing in front of a car. ▸▸ Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
Trick-or-Treat Safely ▸▸ Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. ▸▸ If children are mature enough to be without adult supervision, they should trick-ortreat in groups. ▸▸ Only visit well-lit houses. Cleveland Clinic Florida Reclaims Top Hospital Ranking BY STACEY BOMSER
C
leveland Clinic Florida is once again the top ranked hospital in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals ranking for 2018-2019. The annual survey ranks 65 hospitals in the metropolitan area of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Cleveland Clinic Florida held the No. 1 spot in 2016, but dropped to second place last year. Cleveland Clinic Florida CEO and President Wael Barsoum, MD, says this recognition “speaks to the quality of care and universal commitment of all of its caregivers to put patients first.” “Cleveland Clinic has a 30-year history of providing world class care in South Florida, improving health and quality of life for countless individuals and families across the region,” states Dr. Barsoum. “As a tertiary-level hospital, we care for very sick
patients in need of advanced, complex care, which is reflected in a high patient acuity rating on par with much larger, nationally ranked hospitals.” In addition to being ranked as the top hospital in South Florida and fourth highest statewide, Cleveland Clinic Florida was ranked nationally in two specialties: Gastroenterology & GI Surgery ranked No. 25 and Orthopedics ranked No. 42. The Weston-based hospital ranked “high performing” in four specialties: Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Geriatrics, and Neurology & Neurosurgery. Additionally, Cleveland Clinic Florida rated “high performing” in all nine common conditions and procedures evaluated by U.S. News & World Report: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, colon cancer surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hip replacement, knee replacement, and lung cancer surgery. “The demand for this high-quality, complex care has led us to our current hospital expansion that will add 75 beds and increase our capacity by 50 percent,” explains Dr. Barsoum. “This
will allow Cleveland Clinic to meet the growing needs of the Florida communities and patients we are proud to serve.” The new 221,000 square-foot hospital tower and expanded Emergency Department on the Weston campus are scheduled to open in the next few months. U.S. News & World Report publishes its Best Hospitals ranking to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk due to other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determine the rankings in most specialties.
Cleveland Clinic Florida Achieves Rectal Cancer Care Accreditation BY STACEY BOMSER
O
ne of the reasons Cleveland Clinic Florida was so highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report is because of its exceptional patient care and multidisciplinary approach to medicine. This is evident in the hospital’s recent accreditation by the American College of Surgeons National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer. Cleveland Clinic Florida is the first hospital in Florida, and second in the nation, to earn accreditation. The American Cancer Society estimates 43,000 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed this year. Combined with colon cancer, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined. Steven Wexner, MD, PhD, Chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery and Director of the Digestive Disease Center at Cleveland Clinic Florida, played an instrumental role in developing the new rectal cancer accreditation program. He
serves as a lead member of the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC) steering committee. In addition, Dr. Wexner is past president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, two of the professional societies that helped support the creation of the NAPRC. “I am proud that our specialists at Cleveland Clinic Florida take a collaborative approach to treating patients, resulting in improved outcomes and better quality of life,” said Dr. Wexner. “As more centers achieve National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer accreditation, I am confident that U.S. patients will derive the same benefits already achieved through similar programs in other parts of the world.” According to Dr. Wexner, the mortality index and length of stay outcomes for rectal cancer patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida are far superior to national averages, which he credits to

the adoption of the NAPRC standards that have been in development for the past seven years. The accreditation program was developed to improve outcomes for rectal cancer care in order to lower rates of colostomy construction, local tumor recurrence and to improve tumor-free survival rates for patients. The standards are consistent with Cleveland Clinic Florida’s approach to providing rectal cancer patients with high quality care. The accreditation was achieved as a result of the multidisciplinary approach to patient care provided by the team of specialists in the hospital’s Digestive Disease Center. “Achieving the NAPRC three-year accreditation status is a testament to the exceptional medical and surgical care our multidisciplinary team from colorectal surgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, radiology and pathology provide patients with rectal cancer,” stated Wael Barsoum, MD, CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic Florida. “Dr. Wexner and the entire team in our

Digestive Disease Center consistently elevate the quality of care for our patients, and they deserve congratulations and recognition for achieving this accreditation.” Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Department of Colorectal Surgery is the largest colorectal surgery center in Florida and has the largest colorectal residency-training program in North America. In addition, the Gastroenterology and GI Surgery department has been consistently ranked within the top 50 programs in the country in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” rankings.

Language Arts Teacher’s Novel Prompts Poignant Discussion on School Shootings BY STACEY BOMSER
F
ollowing last year’s tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Todd Wilson knew he needed to do something. The 8th grade language arts teacher at Tequesta Trace Middle School used what he knows best – books – to reach his students. His novel, Off the Face of the Planet, is prompting discussion about the issue of school shootings which has become all to real to today’s students. Mr. Wilson says he first started writing the book after the shootings at Columbine High School. “I shelved it for a while, not sure of its direction and relevance, and then, with each subsequent shooting, the voices of these characters became so powerful, so strong, that I could no longer deny them. I was being pulled more and more to writing about the subject, mainly to understand why a teenager so immersed in pain resorts to killing numerous innocent people as a solution to a personal problem.” He uses the book to get students thinking and talking. “I take pages of the text and read them in class. Certain excerpts are more powerful than others. I like to have my students read those passages and then we talk about it. I lead them with questions;
they respond. Sometimes the discussion stays with guns and violence, sometimes it shifts to other topics like bullying. Each class is different.” Mr. Wilson says discussing the issue of guns in school is a matter of survival. “These kids are witnessing events that could happen at any place, at any time. Being empowered with what to do in such a situation could save their lives. No longer is this just about the safety of one person, something young people sometimes easily dismissed as an event that could be perceived as isolated, irrelevant and maybe somewhat trivial. But now, since these shootings involve so many innocent people, it becomes far more responsible to have these discussions, to make sure we are all empowered with the knowledge of how to save each other.”
In light of the Parkland tragedy, Mr. Wilson says his students are talking about empowerment, especially after witnessing the accomplishments of the #neveragain movement. “For so long, I think young people felt they had no power; that politicians didn’t care what they had to say. But then they witnessed Emma Gonzalez, David Hogg and so many other Marjory Stoneman Douglas students stand up with iron fists and storm the political castle. It has generated an impressive spark. The young people in my classroom seem to talk with more hope than they used to. As common as these shootings are, there is this other piece, this positivity that exudes from something so grim, the idea that they can do something – lead a peaceful protest, organize a rally, write letters, engage in fundraisers, participate in walk-outs, and make change.” n Todd Wilson’s books are available at www.blurb.com

Cypress Bay Teacher Brings History to Life BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents in Laurie Marks’ Honors U.S. History classes at Cypress Bay High School are getting a unique understanding of the people and events that shaped our nation’s history. Using primary sources, such as original documents, speeches, maps and art, Ms. Marks is bringing history to life. “It is one thing to be told how President Johnson’s Great Society speech made an impact, it is another thing to read it and listen to the audio of him giving it in the context of that time. Where he gave it, who he was talking to and his previous interactions with Martin Luther King before he gave it – that is what grabs students,” explains Ms. Marks. “If a teacher can ask the right questions to focus the students’ attention on more than just telling them about it, it sparks questions, discussion and understanding in a way that a textbook cannot.” As a teacher, Ms. Marks says she has seen students deepen their understanding of a course based on their reading of primary sources as a supplement to the textbook. “Having students read the words of people who shaped and experienced the events of history as they were happening is an invaluable tool in teaching them about those events.” Teaching teachers to use primary sources is at the core of Ashland University’s Master of Arts in
American History and Government program. Ms. Marks was privileged to complete her masters’ coursework while taking part in the prestigious Summer Fellowship by the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University in Ohio. As a student herself, Ms. Marks spent time this past summer at the Library of Congress researching the Northwest Ordinance for her thesis. She is trying to prove that one of the Founding Fathers, Gouverneur Morris, was instrumental in crafting the ban on slavery that was added to the Northwest Ordinance in 1787 as a way to curtail the institution of slavery from expanding into the nation’s territories. She believes that was done because Morris, a delegate for Pennsylvania, could not achieve his goal from within the Constitutional Convention. “If I can prove my thesis, it will shine the light

more thoroughly on a debate that has challenged America since its founding as a nation – namely, what role did the Founding Fathers, the framers of the Constitution, see for themselves in relation to either allowing or ending slavery in America,” explains Ms. Marks. “Why weren’t they able to solve the problem? Why didn’t they fight harder to get rid of it? What were their priorities and what relevance does that have for the current national debate on race and race relations?” The Ashbrook Center at Ashland University, which sponsored the summer fellowship, is a highly regarded nonprofit provider of educational programs for U.S. history and government teachers.

he Weston City Commission unanimously voted to put the following question on the November 6th Ballot: The current City Charter provides for term limits for the Mayor and City Commissioners. The proposed amendment would eliminate the term limits. Shall the above-described Amendment be adopted? I encourage you to vote Yes. The City’s Charter in 1996 did not contain term limits. In 2002, a question was approved by the electors in Weston that created term limits such that no individual could serve more than two consecutive four-year terms in any one position, unless they were elected during a Special Election to complete the previously unexpired term of another individual. To me, as an elected and as a voter, every election is a term limit and that elected can be voted out of office regardless of term limits. If the elected has not “connected” with their community, then that community has every right to express their views at the ballot box. The question is: if our community wants to “keep” an elected official who has served two consecutive four-year terms, the only way to make this happen would be to change the City Charter and do away with the current prohibition. Currently I, along with Commissioner Kallman, are term limited in November 2020 and if our neighbors would like for us to remain, which many have expressed, the only way this could happen would be to change the Charter in November 2018. If not, our terms will end in 2020 and so will our current service. As we see in our community, change in leadership is inevitable. You only have to look to several of our religious institutions over the recent past – clergy has changed as they retire. As a City, we are 22 years old and certain change is inevitable in our leadership and it will happen – we cannot stop it – the question is: how much change must happen or can some of it be reduced in order to keep “continuity” in our Weston. The members of the City Commission serve at the pleasure of our neighbors in the City and we do so because we have stepped forward and do our best to make decisions that we believe are in the best interest of our residents, businesses, and visitors, all in a non-partisan manner. We do not do so as Republicans, Democrats, or Independents; we do so as committed Weston residents. We respect the obligations given to us and pledge to do our best. Everyone may not agree with every decision that we make, but we look at the broader impact of every decision and its impact, both short term and long. That is our responsibility and obligation and we all take our neighbors’ trust very seriously. Weston is different from any other place in the world. You cannot compare Weston to any other place – we are different – we are special – everything you need is here in Weston. I am humbled by the opportunity I have had to serve our great community and hope to be able to continue to help chart our destiny into the future. I ask for your support and Yes vote on the November 6th Ballot Question. n Mayor Stermer can be contacted via email at dstermer@westonfl.org or at 954-385-2000.

was excited to learn of a free service to all Floridians that can be easily accessed from your cell phone or landline telephone. The Florida Department of Transportation’s free 511 Travel Information System provides bilingual (English and Spanish) real-time traffic information, including commuter travel times, congestion, construction, lane closures, severe weather and emergency evacuation information on all Florida interstate highways; toll roads including Florida’s Turnpike; and many other metropolitan roadways. The resource is available 24 hours a day via phone by dialing 511, or online at www.FL511.com. My Florida 511 users can create custom profiles for up to two phones. To sign up for free custom profiles, you will need to register a primary and/or secondary phone number. By registering for My Florida 511 personalized services, you will: ▸▸ Create a personalized services profile to add an unlimited number of custom routes ▸▸ Hear travel information along those routes first when you dial 511 from a registered cell or landline phone ▸▸ Receive phone, text or e-mail alerts about incidents along your routes ▸▸ Set your language preference as English or Spanish

511 is a voice-activated and touch-tone phone system that will guide you through menu options. 511 will ask if you would like information on traffic, transit, travel times, airports and seaports. Callers can skip the language and main menu prompts by interrupting the system and immediately asking for any of the main menu options or by naming a city, county or roadway in English. Spanishspeaking callers must first request “Español” before giving other commands. Traffic information is updated on an ongoing basis as incidents occur and situations change on roadways. Travel times are automatically updated every few minutes around the clock. Like many other call centers, FDOT records all phone calls to the 511 system. These recordings allow FDOT to troubleshoot the system. By analyzing calls, FDOT can pinpoint potential issues and improve system functionality, such as voice recognition, to provide you with a better user experience. You can also sign up for Emergency Alerts. An “Emergency Alert” provides you with information on severe weather, wildfires, road and bridge closures, as well as AMBER, Silver and Blue alerts. In the “Manage Routes & Alerts” section, click on “Create Related Emergency Alert.” Decide the delivery option and the county or counties about which you would like to receive emergency alerts. Wildfires, smoke, fog and heavy rain can all lower visibility on the roads. It is important for drivers to drive as safely as possible in these conditions. The Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) give these tips for driving in low visibility conditions: • Call 511 — Call 511 to get up-to-the-minute reports on roadway conditions, including emergency evacuation and toll-suspension information • Slow Down — Fog and smoke create a visual illusion of slow motion for the driver and reduce visibility. State Representative Richard Stark (D – Weston) represents House District 104 which includes all of Weston. You can reach Rep. Stark at RichardStark@myflorida.gov or by calling his legislative office at 954-217-0287.

FALL FUN BY STACEY BOMSER

ust because the temperature really doesn’t dip, and the leaves don’t change color, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate the fall season in South Florida. From pumpkin patches to hayrides, there are endless opportunities to usher in autumn and create your own fall festival.
Pick a Pumpkin This time of year, pumpkin patches are popping up on practically every corner. While they’re great photo ops for taking adorable pictures of the kids, these pumpkin patches are also the perfect place to find your future jack-o’-lantern. You can roam the rows of these giant, bright orange squash, searching for that perfect specimen. So, how do you decide which of the literally thousands of pumpkins to pick? According to thekitchn.com, there are six simple steps to picking the perfect pumpkin. 1. Pick it up and tap it: It should feel sturdy. When you tap it, you should hear a hollow sound. 2. Check the coloring: Choose one that has consistent coloring throughout. 3. Look for bad spots: Try to choose a pumpkin without any scratches, bruises, or dark spots. 4. Apply pressure: Flip the pumpkin upside down and apply pressure with your thumbs. If it’s not completely sturdy, the pumpkin isn’t fresh and will rot quickly. 5. Set it down: Make sure it sits flat, unless you want your jack-o’lantern to sit a little crooked.
Harvestthe Family Fun this 6. Carry it from the bottom: Don’t carry it by the stem — instead, cradle it from the bottom or tote it home in a bag. It’s important to keep in mind that not all pumpkins are created equally. There is a difference between ‘pie pumpkins’ and ‘carving pumpkins.’ Carving pumpkins are typically thinner, making them easier to saw into. They also tend to have less ‘guts’, so they’re easier to clean. On the other

Each child receives a plant, Student Growing Guide, and Weekly Care Check List. “The Bonnie Plant Project is a wonderful way to engage children and spark an interest in agriculture,” states Third Grade Teacher Patty DeBiase. “We not only teach them the basics of gardening, but the importance of our food system and growing our food.” Each year, the third grade grows vegetables in the school’s raised garden, which was built with support from Orchard Supply Hardware. “We grow veggies to make salsa: tomatoes, onion, peppers, cilantro and even basil,” states Mrs. DeBiase. “To culminate our unit, all third-grade students receive a small cabbage plant with directions on how to grow it at home.” The students nurture and tend to their cabbage plants all summer and the largest one is entered into

the Bonnie Cabbage Program contest. One winner is selected at random from each state by the Commission of Agriculture and that student receives a $1,000 scholarship. The winners will be announced in February. Isabella Colon will represent Indian Trace Elementary school in the contest. With great dedication, she cared for her cabbage plant throughout the summer. At the time of this writing, Isabella’s cabbage measured 10.5 inches and weighed 5.5 pounds. Mrs. DeBiase says she likes the Bonnie Cabbage Program because it fits right in with the third-grade curriculum. “It exposes kids to agriculture through a hands-on experience and also provides them with valuable life lessons in nurture, nature, responsibility and accomplishment. I personally love this project because kids learn about nutrition and discover the satisfaction of growing and harvesting fresh vegetables.” Through this program, Bonnie Plants has delivered over 14 million cabbage plants to students nationwide. “The joy of gardening and the satisfaction of growing healthy food are gifts that kids never outgrow,” says Stan Cope, President and CEO of Bonnie Plants. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to share these gifts with the next generation of gardeners.”
Isabella Colon’s cabbage weighs over five pounds.

Flat Feet in Children and Adults BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
T
he arch of a person’s foot is the main supporting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops.

POSITIVE PARENTING
Talking to Teenagers BY IVIS MATEOS aising a teenager is like a riding a rollercoaster of never ending emotions for both the teenager and the parents. The funny thing about raising a teenager is that they usually end up saying and doing similar things to what you did to your parents when you were an annoying teenager. “How is that possible?” you might ask. Well, my friends, this is called karma. I remember my mom casting a spell on me when I was a teenager. She said “Abracadabra, may you have ten annoying, over-emotional, messy, loving, smelly teenagers, just like you one day.” Let me tell you folks, a mother’s spell is accurate, most of the time. In my case, I had two, annoying, over-emotional, messy, loving, smelly teenagers that I am still learning how to understand. Understanding our teenagers can be challenging, so it is imperative that we keep an open dialogue with them, even if the dialogue consists of just yes’s and no’s on your part. Let me ease your understanding of teenagers by sharing with you some of the modern lingo I found online and in the brief conversations I’ve had with my own kids. For example:
R
Teenager says: Bruh, nah. (Teenage complete sentence, by the way.) I say: Of course, I have a bra on, son. Teenage translation: Mom, I don’t want to... (my teenager is rejecting my instructions) Teenager says: I’m weak. I say: I told you to start eating more vegetables and your sugar intake is too high! (I’m instantly concerned about his health.) Teenage translation: Mom, your joke was funny. (True story, I told a joke and my son thought it was hilarious.) Teenager says: Sip Tea I say: Oh son, I love mint tea. Would you like me to serve you some? Teenage translation: Mind your own business. (You said what?) These are some silly samples of the “current” teenage lingo. However, there are also some slang expressions we must be weary of and ready to address if they come up. Parents need to watch out for teenage slang as well as short-hand text messages that can be used to hold secret conversations about drugs or sexual innuendos that can endanger teenagers. There are a lot of great resources on teen terminology. Here are a couple of websites I found useful: www.netsanity.net/teen-slang-parents-guide www.verywellfamily.com/a-teen-slang-dictionary Ivis Mateos is a mother of two boys and has more than 21 years combined experience in educational consulting and management. In addition to earning her National Administrator Credential, Mateos has lead workshops on curriculum development, teacher development and parenting. She has been the General Manager at Tiny Planet Preschool and an Educational Consultant for Graven International Group for the past three years. For more information, please contact 954-384-4884.

ASK THE EXPERT
Just a Baby Tooth BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN ou are accompanying your child for their regularly scheduled visit to the dentist and you hear those dreaded words “your child has a cavity.” Initial emotions usually consist of anger. You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird and Monsters Inc.). The toothpaste is bubble gum flavored. There are three hundred dinosaur floss handles in the drawer, a water irrigation system, and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care. After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So, what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then it dawns on you. It is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth, aka “baby” teeth, have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion, chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance. The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and in most cases save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just as important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits which will reward them into their adulthood.

Gator Run Students Sit Up and Take Notice to Flexible Seating Options BY STACEY BOMSER
G
one are the days of traditional school desks lined up in rows. Today’s classrooms are looking more like lounges or cafes, with students sitting at high top tables or relaxing on floor cushions. It’s called flexible seating and teachers at Gator Run Elementary are embracing this concept. “Flexible seating offers students the choice to work in a way that is most comfortable for them,” explains Second Grade Teacher Denise Boehm. Besides comfort, flexible seating creates a more wel-
coming, relaxed environment which is more conducive to learning. According to Mrs. Boehm, “Students in classrooms with flexible seating are given ownership over their learning. They can be comfortable and focus without being squirmy in hard plastic chairs and single desks. Kids who need to move often can do so or they can choose a wobbly stool which allows them to rock and bounce in safety, instead of rocking back in their chair and risking an injury.” Flexible seating also allows students to work more collaboratively and promotes positive relationships. “We have completely eliminated the bickering that would sometimes interrupt learning because someone’s paper was hanging over on another student’s desk,” shares Mrs. Boehm. “Students are not confined to one table with the same students for the entire day and now have the ability to work with or near different kids. They now have the ability to make a good choice and move away from someone they may currently not be getting along with.” Mrs. Boehm says teachers have used different types of flexible seating to furnish
their classrooms. Some have long community tables, high top tables, barstools, arm chairs, couches and coffee tables, while others have altered traditional classroom furniture by removing or lowering table legs, so students can sit on the floor around them. It’s also been a chance for teachers to get crafty, turning file crates and large buckets into stools with cushions. “Many teachers have written grants and received funding through DonorsChoose.org and others have brought furniture from home. We have also had some very generous donations from parents,” notes Mrs. Boehm, adding that Direct Office solutions donated $10,000 worth of furniture. Flexible seating is also in use in the school’s media center and maker space room. Gator Run Principal Keith Peters supports teachers’ desire to make their classrooms more learning-friendly. “Gator Run teachers are fully encouraged to try different things,” shares Mrs. Boehm. “Principal Peters has allowed us to paint the classroom walls, he’s arranged removal and storage of the traditional desks and tables, and he helps explain to the parents that stepping out of the box is a good thing!”

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

very day before school starts, students and families flock to Eagle Point Elementary for the Morning Mile. This special program promotes physical fitness and healthy living, with children and families walking for 30 minutes at their own pace. “The program is the perfect way to bring academics, physical education and community together,” explains Eagle Point Elementary Physical Education Teacher Manny Castro. “Earning a healthy body while kick-starting their brains, morning exercise helps the children expend their youthful energy which leads them to being calmer and more academicallyengaged during the school day.” This is the school’s first year participating in the

Morning Mile and Coach Castro says his goal is to get at least 30% of the students, kindergarten through fifth grade, involved. “The reason I started the Morning Mile here at Eagle Point is because I want to give our kids the opportunity to start their day on a positive note, eliminate anxiety, and charge their brain in preparation for the school day,” he shares. “Not to mention, the health benefits the program provides.” The Morning Mile is a product of Fitzness International LLC. In Broward County the program is sponsored by Under Armour. “It’s a rewards-based program with students earning a sneaker charm for every five miles.
Once they hit each 100 miles level, they earn a number 100 charm,” explains Coach Castro. “Students are extraordinarily motivated by and proud to wear these reward necklaces.” The Morning Mile program is helping Eagle Point Elementary School students train to walk or jog in the upcoming Mayor’s Challenge Cup 1-mile Health Walk at the Rotary Club of Weston’s Run For Tomorrow in December. “Quite a few children and I, along with our other physical education coach, attended the Mayor’s Challenge last year and we have every intention of attending this year in greater force,” states Coach Castro. Imagine Charter School’s New PE Coach Is A Real MVP BY STACEY BOMSER
I
magine Charter School at Weston welcomed Doug Shanahan as its new athletic director and physical education teacher this year. As a former professional athlete, he brings a new level of sportsmanship to the school. Shanahan is a former Major League Lacrosse player. He began his athletic career playing both football and lacrosse in college. He was a three-time All American in football as well as recipient of the first ever Tewaaraton Trophy, the lacrosse equivalent of the Heisman. Following college, he went on to play professional lacrosse. A two-time member of Team USA, Shanahan was a member of the 2002 U.S. World Lacrosse Championship title team, where he received All-World and Championship MVP honors. Now Shanahan is bringing his winning spirit to Imagine Charter Weston. “My goals are quite simple for Physical Education. I want to have a fun, loving, caring environment all while increasing each
student’s overall awareness and knowledge of their body and its capabilities.” He believes Physical Education is an important subject in school today, especially because of the increase in childhood obesity. “Children need to understand how their body works, how it breaks
down fat, how it reacts to exercise, and what exercises they can do to help themselves,” shares Shanahan. “To me, PE is a lifelong class. The base knowledge they learn as young students carries with them throughout adulthood.” Shanahan also credits PE classes and sports for building well-rounded students. “Physical Education and athletics overall support students academically,
socially and physically. There is plenty of science that supports how physical activity has a profound effect on the brain. The increase of oxygen to the brain improves memory and recall, which is a huge part of academic learning. Socially, team-building and cooperative learning allows our students to work with others, build trust, foster group problem solving skills, and develop long-lasting friendships.” In addition to his work at Imagine Charter Weston, Shanahan is also the lacrosse coach for Western High School. Under his leadership, the Wildcats have won back to back FHSAA District 29 Championships. He is also coach of the Empire Elite lacrosse club, a year-round travel program. Shanahan also runs a national recruiting company called Nexstar Lacrosse. “It assists in placing lacrosse players in college and runs a national lacrosse showcase each January. Every year 30 to 40 lacrosse coaches from top schools fly in to South Florida to check out our local talent.”

Everglades Elementary School Students Make Their Mark BY STACEY BOMSER
E
verglades Elementary School turned International Dot Day into a month-long celebration. International Dot Day, September 15th, honors the unlimited possibilities that we all hold within. That was a lesson Art Teacher Sandra Goldglantz integrated into activities throughout the month. “International Dot Day allows students to see their full potential,” explains Mrs. Goldglantz. “It illustrates how vital teachers are and the profound impact that we have on our students.” During the first week of school, Mrs. Goldglantz read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds to her students. She says many students relate to Vashti, the main character in the story who feels she is not an artist. “Her teacher’s positive approach and encouragement gave Vashti the confidence she needed to believe she can do anything if she tries.” Mrs. Goldglantz gives that same confidence to her students. Here’s what a few fifth graders took away
from this lesson: “Have confidence and believe in yourself and you can make things happen;” “Don’t say you can’t do something until you try;” and “Teachers encourage students to open their minds and be creative.” In addition to listening to The Dot, each grade participated in different dot-related activities. For example, prekindergarten and kindergarten students sang The Dot Song using hand motions. The primary grades colored a dot that is framed in gold to display outside their classrooms. Fourth and fifth graders discussed the work of artist Georges Seurat and the style of pointillism (painting using dots). Mrs. Goldglantz explained to students how their eye can mix colors when dots of different colors are placed close to each other. In addition, all grades created their own dot

inspired art for all to admire. A “Guest Dot Sign In Page” was placed outside the art room. Students were encouraged to make a dot as they entered the classroom. “In the book, The Dot, readers learn to ‘just make a mark and see where it takes you’ and I wanted my students to be able to leave their mark on the world,” states Mrs. Goldglantz.

Predicted Trends in Plastic Surgery BY DR. TAMY M. FAIERMAN BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON ach year plastic surgery and aesthetic associations, as well as global wellness institutions, release new data trends. Plastic surgeons with active practices often see these trends developing ahead of the data. As a plastic surgeon for over 20 years and owner of a Holistic Spa and Wellness Center, I sit where plastic surgery, aesthetics and wellness all converge and see these changes occurring in real time. With 2018 drawing to a close, here is a forecast of some of the trends that will gain momentum as the health and wellness paradigm shifts and evolves for the future. Plastic Surgery Continues to Boom: New data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows continued growth in cosmetic procedures over last year. The statistics also reveal that Americans are turning to new and innovative ways to shape their bodies, especially as minimally invasive cosmetic procedures have increased nearly 200% since 2000. Spike in Breast “Explants”: This is a new wave in plastic surgery. Even though breast augmentation remains one of the most performed cosmetic procedures, I have seen an increase in patients requesting explantation, or removal of their implants. From my own experience, there are many reasons for this new trend. Women today are becoming more fit and seeking better overall health and wellness, wanting their bodies to reflect that as well. Many have changed their lifestyles and their larger implants no longer fit with those changes and their new images of themselves. Also, some patients are getting older and have had implants for many years and have now decided they just don’t want them anymore, opting to either remove them and/or exchange them out with smaller implants and a breast lift. Fat Transfer: Significant advancements have been made in surgical regenerative procedures including techniques to transfer fat tissue. Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or autologous fat transfer, is the process of using the patient’s own fat to increase volume of another area of the body. The fat is harvested or extracted using a cannula and is then prepared for reintroduction into the body. This is considered a minimally invasive procedure and is deemed safe, and a good option for the right candidate who wants to use their own fat cells. Clinical and Holistic Worlds Merge: There used to be a division between clean beauty and clinical beauty. While clean beauty is gaining massive support, so is the world of aesthetics, and women are becoming more willing to embrace both worlds. No longer does a patient have to choose between taking an organic or holistic approach and a visit to their dermatologist or plastic surgeon. You can eat organic foods, use organic products and get Botox and fillers because, increasingly, it is all acceptable. Beauty and Wellness are One: Today’s definition of beauty is rapidly changing. Both beauty and wellness are deeply intertwined in our inner and outer emotions. Beauty consumers have enthusiastically embraced wellness, and therefore, wellness is the lens through which people now understand beauty. Many patients are now taking a 360-degree approach to staying youthful and are ready to embrace the latest non-invasive technologies and surgical approaches. Over the next few years, I expect to see all of these trends to continue to grow.

Foods To Protect Your Vision BY DR. JANE THERRIEN
W
hen it comes to protecting your vision, what you eat may affect what you see. Certain vitamins and minerals found in food may play a role in preventing two common causes of vision problems: cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD)—a condition that causes vision loss in the macula, the part of the eye that controls central vision. Nutrients to Consider Dietary antioxidant vitamins and minerals (A, C, and E, and zinc) may help prevent the progression of macular degeneration. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the retina, and dietary intake of these compounds has been shown to improve pigment density in the macula. This pigment protects the cells in the macular area by absorbing excess blue and ultraviolet light and neutralizing free radicals. Dietary intake of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA is also important to retinal health. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have antiinflammatory properties, and there is evidence to suggest that inflammation plays a role in AMD. Finding the Nutrients You’ll find lutein and zeaxanthin in most fruits and vegetables, especially yellow and orange varieties and leafy greens. Egg yolks are an even richer source of these nutrients. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish, flaxseed, and walnuts. Good sources of zinc include red meat and shellfish. You’ll find vitamins A, C, and E in many vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

DINING OUT
New Zona Blu Bar Is the Toast of the Town BY STACEY BOMSER
E
ver since it opened its doors three years ago, Zona Blu has been raising the bar on the dining scene in Weston with its homemade pastas and carefully-crafted menu featuring Sardinian specialties. Now it’s raising the bar yet again, with the opening of the new Zona Blu Bar serving signature cocktails, daily happy hour and an authentic aperitivo menu. “Zona Blu is always looking for ways to make our guests’ experiences more enjoyable,” states Debbie Marras Bautista, who owns Zona Blu with her sister, Sheila Marras David. “This year, we are excited to share that we have obtained a full liquor license and can now offer a full range of cocktails to our guests. We are also proud to be one of very few restaurants in the United States to serve Ichnusa, the official beer of Sardinia.” Many of Zona Blu’s cocktails are made with Mirto, a liqueur unique to Sardinia. “Mirto is a rare berry from a species of the Myrtle tree,” explains Sheila. “The liqueur is used in everything in Sardinia, from roasting pigs to a delicious topping on ice cream. Perhaps the most common use for Mirto is to raise a shot glass and toast ‘A kent’annos!’ (To 100 years!), a toast commonly made on the island. Sardinia has been designated one of the few blue regions in the world, where people often live to more than 100 years.” In addition to a selection of signature cocktails, the Zona Blu Bar serves a delicious collection of aperitivi (small, hand-held appetizers) hand-crafted by Executive Chef Andrea Fadda and his talented team of chefs. The perfect time to sample these delectable treats is on Thursdays from 4-7pm when aperitivi are offered free with a drink order at the bar. According to Debbie, an Aperitivo Happy Hour is a tradition in Italy, where guests are offered these tasty bites in order to prepare the palate for an
extraordinary meal. Zona Blu’s aperitivi will change weekly and may include Arancini (fried risotto balls commonly filled with meat, mozzarella, and peas), Olive Ascolana (deep-fried stuffed olives), Salumi and Formaggi, Tramezzini (small finger sandwiches), and Focaccia. Zona Blu is pleased to offer an à la carte, bar-only menu featuring a selection of “picolli” (small plates). Chef Fadda’s culinary creations include the Mini Zona Blu Burger, Mini Involtini (smoked salmon, cream cheese and olives), Mini Lollipops (grapes rolled in goat cheese and crushed pistachios), Mini Sardissimo (creamy, spicy Pecorino cheese served with olive oil and rosemary flatbread), and Mini Shrimp Cocktail. The one must-try appetizer is the Mini Ichnusa, a traditional Sardinian appetizer of artichokes and salt-cured mullet roe with flatbread.
▸▸ Thursday is Aperitivo Happy Hour from 4-7pm. While the new Zona Blu Bar is a destination in and of itself, be sure to sample the restaurant’s award-winning cuisine. The menu changes seasonally and combines traditional and modern takes on Italian and Sardinian food, offering wood-fired pizza, focaccia and bread baked fresh in-house daily, homemade pastas and desserts, and a selection of the finest fresh seafood. “Our menu consists of traditional Sardinian cuisine such as fregola (a pasta that resembles Israeli couscous) and gnocchetti (small, hand-rolled pasta not to be confused with gnocchi), paired with traditional Italian favorites,” states Sheila. The specialties of the house include two distinct pasta dishes, Spaghetti alla Ruota and Spaghetti al Cartoccio. LEGALLY SPEAKING
The Difficult Issue of Relocation BY EVAN BARON nyone involved in family law, whether it be an attorney, mediator or even a judge, will agree that relocation cases are often the most difficult and challenging. Let me first explain the concept of relocation. A relocation occurs when one parent is seeking permission to relocate with a minor child more than 50 miles from their home. This generally occurs post judgment, meaning after the parties have already been divorced; although it could be an element that is addressed during the dissolution itself. It is not the parent’s relocation that becomes an issue, but rather the minor child’s. Several years ago, the Florida Legislature passed a relocation statute, which dictates how these matters must proceed. A parent who was or is married to the other parent (paternity cases are not always the same) must receive either written permission from the other parent or a court order allowing the relocation to occur. Assuming there is no agreement between the parents, Florida Statutes require the “relocating parent” to file a Petition to Relocate. If a time-sharing schedule has already been established by the court, a request to modify the time-sharing schedule must also be included. The Petition must be served upon the other parent, who will have twenty days to respond. The petition must include the following language: “A RESPONSE TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION OBJECTING TO RELOCATION MUST BE MADE IN WRITING, FILED WITH THE COURT, AND SERVED ON THE PARENT OR OTHER PERSON SEEKING TO RELOCATE WITHIN 20 DAYS AFTER SERVICE OF THIS SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION TO RELOCATE. IF YOU FAIL TO TIMELY OBJECT TO THE RELOCATION, THE RELOCATION WILL BE ALLOWED, UNLESS IT IS NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILD, WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE AND WITHOUT A HEARING.” The Petition must include the following: ▸▸ A description of the location of the intended new residence, including the state, city and specific address if known ▸▸ The home telephone number of the intended new residence ▸▸ The date of the intended move ▸▸ A detailed statement of the specific reasons for the proposed relocation. If it is based upon a job offer which has been reduced to writing, it must be attached. ▸▸ A proposal for the modified time-sharing schedule. In deciding whether to grant the relocation, the Court must consider: ▸▸ The relationship between the minor child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The age and developmental stage of the child and the likely impact a relocation will have on that child ▸▸ The feasibility of preserving the relationship between the child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The child’s preference, taking into consideration the age and maturity of the child ▸▸ Whether the relocation will enhance the general quality of life for the child and the parent seeking relocation ▸▸ The reasons the nonrelocating parent is in fact objecting ▸▸ The current economic and employment circumstances of each parent ▸▸ Whether the relocation is being sought in good faith ▸▸ Any other factor affecting the best interests of the child As you can see, this is a complicated issue. It would be best for both parties to seek legal counsel before considering such a move.

TEE TO GREEN
Looking for the Opening Straight Drive Down the Middle of the Fairway? BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL t’s a great feeling to stride off the first tee knowing you have hit your ball straight down the middle of the fairway. It’s a huge boost to your confidence and any self-doubt you may have had immediately disappears. It’s a given that when you hit it straight from the very start you set up great momentum for the rest
I
of your round. Realistically speaking it’s a fallacy to think you can hit dead straight golf shots all of the time. Here are some tips and drills to help you hit a straight shot. Try to avoid being too tense – Work on removing tension from your wrist and forearm muscles and learn instead to swing freely. A cluttered mind will always add tension and therefore start to improve by reducing the number of different swing thoughts in your head. It is far easier to release the club through impact without tension because a relaxed muscle is faster than a tense one. In addition, less tension makes it far easier to rotate your shoulders and hit the straight shot you are looking for. Swing with a neutral grip – The key to hitting it straight comes from maintaining a neutral grip. Focus on some of the key check points including counting the number of knuckles you can see when you address the ball. Ideally you will see only two knuckles on your left hand; anymore and you are likely to hook the ball. Equally, check the number of knuckles visible on your right hand. You should see no more than three; anymore and you are likely to slice the ball. In conclusion, the right hand controls the swing path and the left hand controls the angle of the clubface. Set up correctly to the ball – Line up your feet, hips and shoulders parallel to the ball to target line at address. In lining up square to the ball to target line, make your life easier by picking a spot about six feet out in front of the ball to represent this imaginary line. Check that your left shoulder faces the target, perhaps the flag stick on a par 3. Check the direction of your divots – Check your divots to determine whether you are hitting the ball with a square clubface. Your divots will clearly tell you the angle at which you struck the ball. If they are pointing directly at the target you need to go back to basics making sure your feet and shoulders are lined up properly. Determine the correct ball position for each club – It varies for each club and therefore it is critical you set up your ball position correctly at address. For pitching wedges and short clubs, the ball should be positioned in the middle of your stance. HEALTH & WELLNESS
Low-Speed Whiplash Injuries BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER he term whiplash was first coined in 1928. Though primarily used to describe the type of injury suffered in rear-impact automobile accidents, over the years whiplash has also been used to refer to any neck injury caused by sudden motion of the head. Because of problems associated with the term whiplash, other phrases have emerged in recent years to try to better describe this type of injury, such as “cervical acceleration/deceleration (cad) injury” and “cervical hyperextension/hyperflexion injury”. All these terms have short-comings, and as a result whiplash still remains an integral part of medical jargon. One of the most controversial issues in the study of whiplash – and one of profound interest to both the insurance and legal fields – revolves around injuries reportedly sustained in low speed rear-impact crashes. Can such collisions cause occupant injury? A study by Brault published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (1998) gives support to the claim soft tissue injury can occur as a result of low speed rear-impact collisions, despite the fact crash velocities are often so slow as to produce no damage to either vehicle. In this study, human volunteer subjects underwent rear-impact collisions in which the crash velocities were set at 2.5 and 5 miles per hour. Of particular significance is these volunteers were first screened for any preexisting spinal conditions, then seated in optimal positions with headrests positioned correctly, and finally were aware of the impending crash. In real-life accidents, it is exceptionally rare to have all of these conditions in the occupant’s favor. For this reason, the results of this study are especially compelling. Under laboratory conditions designed to minimize injury, a significant 29% of occupants were found to have sustained injury at a crash velocity of 2.5 mph, and fully 38% sustained injury at 5 mph. In the real world, victims of rear-impact collisions were often not anticipating the impact, their head may have been turned, their seated posture was very likely poor resulting in their head being too far from the headrest, and frequently their headrests were positioned too low. Each of these factors amplify and compound the trauma that occurs to muscles, ligaments, joints, nerves, blood vessels and bone. Now add to this list a spine that may not have optimal alignment, optimal curvature, or may have some other pre-existing abnormality or health condition. Perhaps this may not be the first such accident an individual has been involved in. As our understanding of whiplash trauma evolves, and more studies like this one support the contention low speed rear-end collisions do cause injury, the controversy regarding authenticity of such injuries may finally be put to rest.

ASK THE EXPERT
Choosing a Plastic Surgeon BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS he first question a prospective patient should be asking when choosing a plastic surgeon is, “Is my doctor board certified in Plastic Surgery?” You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with well-documented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office, which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. (AAAASF) or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board-certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced boardcertified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, assuming the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise, I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

Heartworm Disease and Your Dog BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM
H
eartworm disease is a serious and sometimes fatal disease for dogs. It is caused by a parasite called Dirofilaria immitis that is transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected by biting dogs that are already infected with heartworms. Any dog living or visiting an area that has mosquitoes and infected dogs is at risk of getting heartworm disease. The Heartworm Life Cycle in Dogs ▸▸ A mosquito ingests tiny, immature worms, called microfilariae, in a blood meal from a heartworminfected host animal. ▸▸ The microfilariae develop inside the mosquito, becoming infective larvae within two to three weeks. ▸▸ The mosquito transmits the infective larvae when it bites a new host. ▸▸ The larvae develop inside the dog’s body tissues, then enter the bloodstream and move toward the heart and blood vessels. The larvae grow into adult worms inside the heart, where they will live until they die (about five to seven). Adult heartworms can grow to over a foot in length.
▸▸ After five to six months inside the heart, female worms release microfilariae into the blood, and the cycle starts again. Signs of Disease Dogs infected with heartworms may not show any signs of disease for one to two years. By then, the disease may have already damaged the dog’s heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. The most common signs of heartworm infection are a dry, chronic cough; general weakness; shortness of breath; and lack of stamina. These signs occur because the heartworms clog the heart and blood vessels, making the heart less efficient and reducing the blood supply. All of the signs associated with heartworm disease will be more noticeable after extensive exercise. In advanced cases, the dog may have congestive heart failure, swelling in the abdomen or legs, weight loss, and/or anemia. Diagnosing the Disease The most common way to detect heartworm disease is from a blood test, which detects antigens produced by the adult female heartworms. Your veterinarian may also look at the blood sample under a microscope to see if any microfilariae are present. If the results of these tests are positive for heartworm, additional blood work, X-rays, and echocardiograms may be in order to further determine how extensive the infection is, the number of worms present in your dog’s body, and the amount of
damage they have done to her vital organs. These tests can also help determine whether or not your dog will be able to tolerate the heartworm treatment. Treating Heartworm The vast majority of heartworm patients are treated successfully. Treatment consists of both eliminating the parasites and managing the heart, vascular, and systemic problems caused by the infection. If the infection is not too severe, your veterinarian will likely give your dog a special medication to kill the adult heartworms. Your dog will then need a month’s rest to rid herself of the decomposing worms. Following this, you will need to give your dog some medicine to kill the microfilariae. Your pet should then be put on a prevention program to avoid becoming re-infected. Preventing Heartworm The easiest way to manage heartworm disease is to prevent it. This can be done with oral and topical medications. Discuss the available preventatives with your veterinarian to find out which medication is best for your dog. Many veterinarians now recommend year-round heartworm prevention. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Importance of Washing Your Produce BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP
P
rotect your body from harmful substances by thoroughly washing your produce. One of the goals of functional medicine is to treat disease from its root cause. In doing so, many times we look at patients’ lifestyles, including nutritional choices as a first step in treating and of course, preventing health conditions. But knowing where your food comes from and what ingredients are in it is as important as making healthy choices. Unfortunately, we cannot trust the Food Industry to supply clean foods even when it comes to fruit and vegetables. In today’s society, it seems like everything has been either genetically modified or exposed to substances that can be detrimental to our health, for example, pesticides. A study by The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a research and advocacy group, found traces of an herbicide in popular breakfast foods, such as Cheerios and Quaker Oats. Glyphosate is a controversial substance as it has been linked to cancer; it is also a widely available and popularly known as Roundup, a weed killer. Monsanto, the company behind Roundup, was recently ordered to pay $289 million in damages to a cancer patient who claimed this substance caused the disease. Although Monsanto claims glyphosate is safe, in 2015 the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer declared it a possible carcinogen. However, other studies have shown no association between glyphosate and cancer. Based on their research, EWG has put together a Top 12 list of produce items that have been found to contain pesticide residue: ▸▸ Strawberries ▸▸ Cherries ▸▸ Spinach ▸▸ Pears ▸▸ Nectarines ▸▸ Tomatoes ▸▸ Apples ▸▸ Celery ▸▸ Grapes ▸▸ Potatoes ▸▸ Peaches ▸▸ Sweet bell peppers These results are not only alarming, but scary. What makes this matter worse is the ambiguous and inconclusive research about the effects of glyphosate. The one thing that is certain is that people should not be consuming food with traces of pesticide. What are you to do as a consumer? The best thing is to educate yourself and have awareness of this situation so you can make appropriate decisions. One idea would be to grow your own food to ensure it is free from chemicals, but because this may be difficult and unrealistic for many people. Buying organic products is one way you can cut your exposure to these pesticides. Organic food has been found to contain less pesticide. At Bellissimo Medical LLC, we recommend our patients soak fruits and vegetables in water with 1-2 drops of dish detergent, preferably the clear Dawn Dish Detergent. This will allow the grease-cutting chemicals known as surfactants to remove these chemicals and their residue on the food items and cleans them really well—this is why detergent is used to cleanse animals covered with oil. After submerging for 2-3 hours you can rinse your produce with tap water and consume. If you are used to reaching for the “triple washed” and “ready-to-eat” produce items in hopes of saving some time in the kitchen, it may be time to reconsider and invest more time making sure your food is as clean as possible. Your health is worth the extra effort. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Bellissimo Medical LLC is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For information, visit www.BellissimoMedical.com.
