From Samhain to All Hallows Eve to Halloween

D

o you celebrate the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain? If you or your kids are dressing up to go trick-or-treating this month you just might. Believe it or not, Halloween dates back about 2,000 years to the area that is now Ireland and the British Islands. The Celts, who inhabited those islands at the time, celebrated their new year on November 1st. The day marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter. For the Celts, winter was a period of struggle and often death. They believed that on that night the barrier between the living and the dead would open and the ghosts of the dead would return. The Celts burned huge bonfires and wore costumes consisting of animal skins and even heads. Their priests, called Druids, would attempt to contact the spirits and tell people’s fortunes. After the Romans conquered the British Isles, the celebration was combined with a Roman festival that commemorates the passing of the dead, called Feralia. About 600 years later Christianity had spread throughout Europe and Pope Boniface IV established the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day, which was later changed to All Soul’s Day, in honor of the dead. It was celebrated on the same day and using the same customs as Samhain. The Middle English term “All Hallows” which translates to “All Souls” evolved somewhere along the way to the word Halloween. Much has changed over the last 2,000 years. Today, Halloween is a festive time focused more on children’s enjoyment. No longer do adults wear macabre costumes made of animal skins. Rather, the holiday today features excited children dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters and superheroes merrily going from house to house collecting bags full of candy. How ever you choose to celebrate Halloween, make sure it’s fun and safe. Sincerely,

Weston Launches Census 2020 Awareness and Education Campaign

Weston BSO Police Chief Kevin Butler

BY STACEY BOMSER

The City of Weston wants residents to understand the importance of making sure every person is counted, because census data is used to help communities create jobs, provide housing, prepare for emergencies and build schools, roads and hospitals. “Funding is attached to each person counted,” explains Barrett-Miller. “An undercount in the 2010 Census cost Broward County approximately $2.1 million per year or $210,970,000 over the last decade. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 14,600 residents were not counted.” She says it is especially important to include babies and children in the census count. “For some reason children under the age of five are the most undercounted group,” notes Barrett-Miller. “Babies and children also need the funding that is distributed in the form of VPK, school lunch programs, CHIP program, food stamps and a host of other essential services.” To help ensure every Weston resident is counted, the City is soliciting individuals to join the Complete Count Committee as a Census Ambassador. Barrett-Miller says it’s not a big commitment. “We will give you the information you need to know about the Census and if you only

he City of Weston wants you to know that everyone counts. That is the main message for the upcoming Census 2020. To get that message heard before the census is taken in mid-March, it has launched a multi-level marketing campaign. “We have begun soft messaging in announcements, social media, on-hold messages, things like hand-outs and banners in the July 4th Parade,” explains Director of Communications Denise Barrett-Miller. “This fall we will have a presence at City events and the community will see banners throughout City parks and entryways, educational articles in our eNewsletters, and we have shot a video campaign with a variety of community leaders to help spread the word about the importance of the Census – The What, Why and How.” Barrett-Miller says the public service announcements feature city commissioners, local religious leaders, business owners, members of the arts community and other community leaders providing information about Census 2020 in brief messages that are easy to understand. “We want residents to see people like themselves and people they trust delivering key messages about the safety and security of the Census.”

This movie is rated PG. Everyone can get into the holiday spirit with Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch on December 14th. eston is an active community. From biking and tennis to almost every team sport imaginable, there is something for everyone and all of it is on display at Weston’s Sports Extravaganza. The free event takes place on Saturday, November 2nd at Weston Regional Park. This is the second year the City of Weston has partnered with the Weston Sports Alliance and the Weston Tennis Center to showcase the numerous league sports and programs available to the community. There will be representatives from AYSO, Weston Warriors Lacrosse, Weston Field Hockey, Weston Explosion Softball, WAL Baseball, Okapi Wanderers Rugby, FUTSOC, Weston Travel Baseball, Weston Warriors Football, Weston FC and the YMCA, in addition to the Weston Tennis Center and Kidokinetics. “The Sports Extravaganza gives individuals of all ages the ability to test their skills and experience what the City of Weston has to offer,” states Special Events Manager Annalisa Walker. The family-friendly event will feature hands-on activities such as skills challenges and games. Walker says participants can learn to swing a bat,

dribble a soccer ball, catch a football, and even play tennis. Refreshments will be served to help quench players’ thirst. “There will be plenty of time to visit each tent to learn about the league sports offered, engage

in various activities, and register for the upcoming season,” notes Walker. She believes parks and recreation departments play a significant role in the overall health and wellness of a community. “Promoting our sports programs is a way to move children and adults toward a lifetime of good physical fitness habits. As a Healthy Weight Community, the more exposure to what is available the better, encouraging the Weston community to be and stay physically active.” All league sports programs in the City fall under the governing body of the Weston Sports Alliance. It ensures that the youth and adult sports programming is offered in a fun, competitive and professional atmosphere, with an emphasis on good sportsmanship. Weston’s Sports Extravaganza is a free event taking place on Soccer Field #8, near the event stage, in Weston Regional Park beginning at 5:30pm. The event precedes the Moonlight Movie in the Park feature, Ralph Breaks the Internet. For more information about the sports programs available in Weston visit www.westonfl.org/government/ parks-and-recreation/sports-leagues.

The generosity of this community never ceases to amaze and never was that more evident than in the efforts of the Rotary Club of Weston and Cleveland Clinic Florida, as well as students from Cypress Bay High School. “The Rotary Club of Weston is part of Rotary District 6990, which includes portions of the Bahamas, so the

Donations of non-perishable food and water, baby care items, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, camp stoves and propane, flashlight and batteries, cots and bedding, and so much more were dropped off by Rotarians and members of the community wanting to do what they can to help the hurricane victims. The donation drive was spearheaded by Freedland’s children. His son, Blake, and friend, Jonathan Berger, worked with The Rotary Club of Weston, along with

Freedland says it was a community effort. “We truly could not have done it without the help from everyone in the Weston community who donated or assisted with sorting and packing.” The Weston Rotary relief effort was enough to fill two trucks. Weston Art Guild Exhibit Brings a Pop of Color BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Weston Art Guild unveils a brand new exhibit this month. It’s a new twist on a theme the artists have done before. “Fifty Shades of Gray Plus One” opens on Monday, October 28th at Bailey Hall on Broward College’s Davie campus. “We decided to use ‘Fifty Shades of Gray Plus One’ as a challenge for our members to think out of their ordinary way of creating,” shares Weston Art Guild President Lynda Sauls. “Plus, there has been a lot of attention given to E.L. James’ novels of a similar name, so we thought it would draw attention and interest to attend the exhibit.” This exhibit will feature between 80 and 100 pieces of artwork of various mediums. According to Sauls, there will be oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, digital and photographic works, as well as sculpture and glass pieces. In keeping with the exhibit’s title, all pieces will be done in shades of gray with one additional color. “Tonal appeal expresses a sense of unity over diversity or tranquility over action,” explains Sauls. “The pop of color will be a jarring of that tranquility or unity challenging the viewer’s resting eye.”

“Fifty Shades of Gray Plus One” is a juried exhibit. A judge will be choosDiver-sity by Susan Gillingham ing the first, second and third place winners, as well as honThirst Quenched by Lynda Sauls orable mentions and a judge’s recognition award winner. Next month, the Weston Art Guild will host its 11th annual Juried Art Show at the Weston Branch Perspective by Lisa Botto Lee Library. St. Paul Lutheran Church Welcomes New Pastor BY STACEY BOMSER

ith open arms, literally, the Weston community welcomed Pastor Scott Henze to St. Paul Lutheran Church and Preschool. He replaces longtime Pastor Tim Hartner, who retired last May after 28 years in ministry. Pastor Henze says he and his family were overwhelmed by the welcome they received. An installation ceremony was attended by family and friends, members of the congregation and local Lutheran pastors, as well as Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer and City Manager John Flint. “The city leaders and the members of St. Paul Lutheran Church lavished us with gifts, hugs, and welcomed us beyond measure,” states Pastor Henze. “I and my whole family were so thankful Pastor Henze entered the ministry later in life, and blessed.” after a career in the military and private business. f you are tired of going to your primary care doctor’s office every few months to get a prescription refill for your current medical condition, it may be time to change doctors. Conventional medicine continues to deal with chronic illness by targeting symptoms without really taking the time to investigate what is causing the problem in the first place. This is the biggest difference between a traditional medical practice and the type of service you will find at a functional medicine office. Functional medicine focuses on the patient as a whole and not just on symptoms. Our mission is to study the patient’s medical history as well as family history and all possible factors that are contributing to disease so we can treat the root cause of the problem. It is all about recreating balance. Do not get me wrong, there are conditions that are so serious they must be addressed immediately, but this doesn’t mean we should ignore the origin of the disease. If we only treat symptoms and ignore the underlying causes, we enter a never-ending cycle of pill-popping that will eventually affect organs and other areas of health. If a patient comes in with high cholesterol, for example, we do need to immediately rush for the prescriptive medication to treat the condition, rather we need to investigate what is causing the anomaly. Is it the family history or the patient’s lifestyle—in many cases it is a combination of factors. Changes in lifestyle, diet and nutraceuticals may be enough to control cholesterol so it is critical we identify the possible triggers and emphasize the importance of “prevention.” A traditional doctor will tell patients that they need to eat healthier, but many patients don’t even know where to start or what “healthy” even means. At a Functional Medicine Practice, lifestyle—including your food choices—are part of the conversation at every visit because we can’t ignore the importance of these factors in overall wellness and health. One growing area in the medical field is that of hormone replacement. This is where Bellissimo Medical stands out as a functional medicine practice, as we specialize in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy for both men and women. This treatment has been used effectively worldwide since the 1930s and numerous scientific studies have proven its effectiveness. However, patients need to work with qualified practitioners because hormones are a delicate subject and not everyone is trained to provide this service. Bio-identical hormones, also known as natural hormones, are substances that have the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by the human body. Because these are naturally occurring substances that are found in us all, they produce the same physiologic response and there are virtually no side effects. Although they can bring about many health benefits and improved quality of life to those who need it, we will never prescribe hormones unless absolutely necessary. We will evaluate the patient’s current health condition and learn about their medical history to be able to develop a comprehensive program that targets unique needs. Hormone levels are tested before, during and after the treatment to ensure these are maintained at optimum balance. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989.   Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. T

he City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office has put out a call for action and the community is responding. Residents of all ages are taking advantage of the free monthly CPR and bleeding control training class being taught by members of Weston BSO Fire Rescue and Emergency Services. Once a month, residents, as well as people who work in Weston, can take part in the 90-minute course that includes hands-only CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator) education and practice, as well as bleeding control training. “It’s important for members of the community to have these skills because there is a very short window of time to render aid to a person who is suffering from life-threatening bleeding or someone who needs CPR,” explains BSO Life Safety Educator Melanie Brocato. “Our goal is to educate and empower people to learn how to stop life-threatening bleeding and perform CPR so they have the knowledge and skills to become immediate responders should the need arise.” Brocato acknowledges that many people are familiar with CPR, but bleeding control education is a relatively new concept that grew out of

the response to mass casualty events. She says it is critical that BSO educate as many people as possible in these techniques because time is of the essence. “When talking about life-threatening bleeding, there is a very short window of time, about three to five minutes, to offer help before the person bleeds out. That’s why it is so important that people learn the skills to become immediate responders so they can render aid before the arrival of paramedics.” The City of Weston is equally committed to this cause. According to Brocato, in June the City Commission adopted an ordinance to provide for the installation of bleeding control kits to go along with AED’s within certain city buildings. Now the push is on to make sure that residents know how to use the available services. “AED education has been an integral part of the ongoing CPR classes we have offered in the city for

years,” states Brocato. “Because both CPR and bleeding control skills are valuable for people to learn, we decided to combine the two into a hands-only CPR and bleeding control class. It’s better to capture the audience while they’re already here than separate the classes and have people come to two different classes.” The free CPR and Bleeding Control classes will be offered monthly. Space is limited; pre-registration is required. The class is open to ages 12 and up. Call Weston Fire Administration at 954-389-2015 for upcoming class dates, times and locations.

BY ASSISTANT DISTRICT CHIEF BRADLEY MASTERS his year, the theme of Fire Prevention Week (October 6th-12th) focuses on the importance of providing fire and emergency training and education to all members of the family. Providing fire safety education and training to the younger members of the family will help ensure that everyone will make it out of the house safely in case of a fire or other emergency. Children are often the first ones in the family to notice that something is wrong and may save the entire family with their early warning and activation of the safety plan that the family has put in place. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services recommends planning and practicing what each family member will do, and where the family members will meet, in the event of a fire or other emergency.

BSO Fire Rescue Offers Tips to Keep Trick-or-Treaters Safe BY STACEY BOMSER

H

alloween is a fun and festive time of year, but it can also be dangerous. The Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue and Emergency Services Department is urging everyone to be more cautious while out and about on Halloween night and for parents to keep safety in mind when helping their children choose this year’s costume. Shortly the streets will be filled with princesses and pirates, superheroes and sports stars. Weston District Chief Todd Draizin acknowledges that Halloween is an opportunity to show creativeness, but he says think about safety when selecting what your child will wear. “Avoid costumes that have masks. Masks limit your child’s vision and they may not see trip hazards or approaching cars,” warns Chief Draizin, adding that face paint is a much safer and more creative option. “Choose costumes that are well-fitted and flame resistant and stay away from long trailing costumes or costumes that can cause tripping.” Tripping hazards should also be kept in mind when decorating your home for Halloween. Chief Draizin says fire is another concern. “Decorations catch fire easily and burn very hot and very fast. Use battery operated candles or glow sticks when trying to create a festive spirit.” He also recommends keeping

vigilant and aware of kids darting into the streets. Driving is not the time to practice your multi-tasking abilities.” While Halloween is a time many children would like to exert their independence, Chief Draizin says parent supervision is important. “Pinpointing the exact age to allow children to trick-or-treat without a parent is very difficult. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.” Chief Draizin recommends parents take a few exits clear so that nothing blocks your way in event of moments before the Halloween night festivities a fire and making sure smoke alarms are in workbegin to talk to their children and warn them to pay ing condition. close attention to their surroundings and always Traffic is another concern on Halloween. BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS reast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery performed according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons with over 300,000 procedures performed in 2018. The safety and documented positive impact of breast enhancement on an individual’s self esteem has been well documented. However, there has been increasing awareness of a potential long-term complication of breast augmentation with textured breast implants – Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). There are several important facts that all patients should know regarding this disease process. Breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma is a rare and treatable type of T-cell lymphoma that can develop around breast implants. It is not a cancer of the breast tissue itself. The latency of development between implant insertion and diagnosis of BIA-ALCL has been from two to twenty-eight years with a median of eight years. No cases have been definitively identified associated with patients who have had smooth implants. The disease is associated with the increased surface area of textured implants in both saline and silicone implants. The majority of patients present with fluid around the implant as a delayed seroma. The diagnosis is confirmed by aspirating the fluid around the implant under ultrasound guidance and checking the cytology of the fluid. The majority of patients are cured of their disease by bilateral total capsulectomy (removal of the capsule around the implant) and implant removal. Rare patients will present with a mass and have increased risk of requiring radiotherapy and chemotherapy. What causes ALCL? The present theory is that implant texturing, bacteriologic contamination and genetic factors have been implicated and are undergoing further study. Women should not have their implants removed if they are asymptomatic. If a woman experiences a change in her breasts, especially a swelling or lump, she should undergo examination and appropriated imaging including an ultrasound and fine needle aspiration of any fluid around the implant. The current lifetime risk of BIA-ALCL is estimated to be 1:3817 to 1:30,000 women with textured implants. Since the initial case reported in 1996, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recognizes 255 cases in the U.S. and a total of 615 women worldwide as of November 2018. If you have further questions or concerns, please call Dr. Messa’s office to schedule a consultation at 954-659-7760.

Cleveland Clinic Florida Delivers Exceptional Breast Cancer Care BY STACEY BOMSER

O

ctober is breast cancer awareness month. It’s a time to bring awareness to a disease that affects one in eight women in this country. Next to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. It’s estimated more than 250,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone. Fortunately, early diagnosis and treatment means more women than ever are surviving this diagnosis and going on to lead healthy lives. That is particularly good news for women in the Weston community because Cleveland Clinic Florida is known for providing superior breast cancer care. Its accredited Women’s Imaging Center makes early and accurate detection a priority, offering digital mammography, Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography), breast ultrasound, breast MRI and breast CAD (computer aided detection). The Weston campus has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. It has also earned a three-year, full accreditation designation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers by the American College of Surgeons. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers patients more

than just top-notch technology, it also offers a collaborative effort of dedicated breast cancer specialists. “One of the benefits of Cleveland Clinic Florida is that all physicians are in one institution working together; our medical oncologists, our surgeons, radiation oncologists, our plastic surgeons, our genetic counselors,” states Oncologist Thomas Samuel, MD. “We provide an extremely compassionate approach and that makes a big difference to our patients.” As a research institution, Cleveland Clinic Florida patients can participate in a number of leading-edge research trials to test new drug therapies and investigate new treatment protocols. In addition to world-class medical care, Cleveland Clinic Florida patients benefit from a long list of support services. This includes everything from art therapy, which has been proven to support healing by decreasing pain and anxiety, promoting relaxation, improving quality of life, and assisting in rehabilitation, to complementary medicine including reiki, craniosacral therapy, reflexology, and gentle therapeutic massage. The Kline Family Studio offers complimentary wigs to patients. Support groups for cancer patients, as well as care givers, are

also offered. One of the most popular is the Breast Cancer Book Club. “We have support services that treat the whole person. It’s so important to our patients so they can get through a tough diagnosis and help them to adjust,” shares oncology social worker Cara Kondaki, LCSW. “It’s not only medicine and seeing a doctor. We want to look at the whole picture to make the experience more personal for patients here.” Breast cancer patients will soon experience even greater personalized care when the new Lozick Women’s Center opens next year. It will provide a seamless, holistic experience for patients in a newly constructed 6,800-square-foot space in the new hospital wing. The Lozick Women’s Center is designed to foster care team collaboration and provide patients access to the most advanced technology in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 10/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Bianca – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Police Services Academy Students Explore Law Enforcement

A

bout 20 students, ages 11 to 17, participated in the Police Services Academy this past summer. It is an extension of the Weston University program and is run by the Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District. During the nine-week course, participants explored law enforcement services on an in-depth basis with hands-on exercises. The program, which was led by Sergeant Ann Suter, provided students with education and safety training and exposed them to a variety of career paths within the law enforcement field. Students received a firsthand account of Broward Sheriff’s Office operations and how it operates as a contract agency for the City of Weston. The Police Services Academy curriculum included observation, participation and interaction with BSO employees as well as special guest lecturers. The program also included several field trips. During the weekly sessions, students were involved in a wide-range of activities and

education classes such as: introduction to law enforcement; DUI/DARE; tours of BSO facilities including SWAT, marine unit, aviation unit and the Service Center, as well as the Broward County jail; officer safety and introduction to defensive tactics; introduction to the legal system by the Broward State Attorney’s Office; crime scene investigations; patrol services; CPR certification; and internet safety. Weston Police Chief Kevin Butler addressed students and their families during the graduation ceremony. For students interested in learning more about law enforcement during the school year, Weston BSO participates in the Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Explorers Program. It allows teens and young adults, ages 14-21, to learn and experience lawful citizenship as they participate alongside certified BSO deputies in ongoing training and community service projects. Deputy Lynn Gariboldi leads Weston Post 44.

511 Provides Up-To-TheMinute Roadway Reports BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK

I

was excited to learn of a free service to all Floridians that can be easily accessed from your cell phone or landline telephone. The Florida Department of Transportation’s free 511 Travel Information System provides bilingual (English and Spanish) real-time traffic information, including commuter travel times, congestion, construction, lane closures, severe weather and emergency evacuation information on all Florida interstate highways; toll roads including Florida’s Turnpike; and many other metropolitan roadways. The resource is available 24 hours a day via phone by dialing 511, or online at www.FL511.com. My Florida 511 users can create custom profiles for up to two phones. To sign up for free custom profiles, you will need to register a primary and/or secondary phone number. By registering for My Florida 511 personalized services, you will: ▸▸ Create a personalized services profile to add an unlimited number of custom routes ▸▸ Hear travel information along those routes first when you dial 511 from a registered cell or landline phone ▸▸ Receive phone, text or e-mail alerts about incidents along your routes ▸▸ Set your language preference as English or Spanish 511 is a voice-activated and touch-tone phone system that will guide you through menu options. 511 will ask if you would like information on traffic, transit, travel times, airports and seaports. Callers can skip the language and main menu prompts by interrupting the system and immediately asking for any of the main menu options or by naming a city, county or roadway in English. Spanishspeaking callers must first request “Español” before giving other commands. Traffic information is updated on an ongoing basis as incidents occur and situations change on roadways. Travel times are automatically updated every few minutes around the clock. Wildfires, smoke, fog and heavy rain can all lower visibility on the roads. It is important for drivers to drive as safely as possible in these conditions. The Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) give these tips for driving in low visibility conditions: ▸▸ Call 511 — Call 511 to get up-to-the-minute reports on roadway conditions, including emergency evacuation and toll-suspension information ▸▸ Slow Down — Fog and smoke create a visual illusion of slow motion for the driver and reduce visibility. Data and information for the state’s FL511 Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) comes primarily from FDOT via sensors and cameras installed along Florida’s roadways. This data is captured by the state’s Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS) software, SunGuide, and sent to FL511 for use on the website, mobile app and Twitter. FDOT also receives incident data from Road Rangers, Florida Highway Patrol, Waze and city and county law enforcement departments. Weather data is provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Like many other call centers, FDOT records all phone calls to the 511 system. These recordings allow FDOT to troubleshoot the system. By analyzing calls, FDOT can pinpoint potential issues and improve system functionality, such as voice recognition, to provide you with a better user experience. State Representative Richard Stark (D – Weston) represents House District 104 which includes all of Weston. You can reach Rep. Stark at RichardStark@myflorida.gov or by calling his legislative office at 954-217-0287.

Weston Town Center Welcomes Artisan Nights

T

he Friday Night Artisan Market at Weston Town Center is a chance to get a jump on your holiday shopping while also enjoying a family-friendly night out on the town. This month’s event takes place on Friday, October 11th from 6-11pm, behind the Bell Tower. Angie Paulson, Director of Marketing and Events for Weston Town Center, says the artisan nights series was created to showcase different crafts made by local artisans. The monthly event has featured jewelry makers, ceramics artists, glass workers, wood workers, and other artists from Weston and surrounding communities. Paulson personally vets all of the vendors. While some are professional artists, she says the majority are hobbyists. Paulson found many through social media, while other artisans have submitted photos of their work for her to review. There are spots for 25 vendors each night, so Paulson says she is doing her best to feature a variety of crafts and artwork, all of which are available for purchase. “We have had everything from handmade

jewelry, handmade handbags, shoes, gym clothes, soaps, paintings, kids’ clothing, kokedamas (Japanese ornamental plants), personalized gifts and hair accessories, to antipastos and chocolates,” states Paulson. In addition to visiting the various vendors and learning about their specific skills and artistic techniques, patrons can take advantage of happy hour specials at Weston Town Center restaurants and merchants. Children will love the free choo-choo train rides. The weekly Friday night live music under the breezeway will be taking place from 7-10pm. The Friday Night Artisan Market started in August with more than 500 people in attendance. There will not be a date in November so as not to conflict with the annual Weston Town Center Craft and Talent Show. Artisan Night will resume on Friday, December 13th. Another exciting event is coming to Weston Town Center this month. The annual Halloween Spooktacular takes place on Thursday, October 31st

from 5-9pm. Children are encouraged to come dressed in their Halloween costumes to trick or treat to mall merchants. They can also enter the costume contest for a chance to win special prizes. Paulson invites the community to come out and take advantage of these special programs. “We work very hard to bring Weston residents fun and safe events for the entire family.”

Cold and Flu Season: Facts to Help You Through It As the weather cools during winter months, sniffles and coughs from colds and flu often rise. On average, adults get 2 or 3 colds a year. Between 5 and 20 percent of the general population comes down with influenza (the flu), according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “When you are looking at flu virus droplets that are so small — that spreading the virus by breathing in close proximity would be logical,” says Sergio Segarra, M.D., chief medical officer at Baptist Hospital of Miami and an emergency physician. “That, in addition to the virus living up to 24 hours on surfaces, makes it that much worse.” Besides getting your flu shot, doctors recommend the following steps to staying healthy during the cold/flu season: 1. Get adequate sleep. 2. Keep stress at bay. 3. Drink plenty of liquids, hot and cold. The peak of flu season often hits in February and March. Overall, the season typically starts in October and can last through May. The flu shot remains the best way to prevent getting the flu, doctors and public health officials say. They also say to be aware of where germs can be around you and wash your hands often. “Both the cold and the flu are caused by viruses, but each has different symptoms, duration and treatments,” says Deepa Sharma, D.O., a family medicine physician with Baptist Health Primary Care. Flu symptoms often include fever, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headaches. In children, vomiting and diarrhea are more common. Individuals who are at high risk for flu-related complications include

young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease or lung disease, and people ages 65 and older. “The viruses that cause the flu are hard to predict, so we won’t always know what time of year they will become prevalent, or if there’s a particular region that experiences more cases,” Dr. Sharma adds. The flu virus spreads primarily by droplets formed when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. But a study last year found that coughs and sneezes may not be necessary to fill the air with droplets of the flu virus. The study, funded by the CDC and the National Institutes of Health, suggested that the flu virus can spread more easily than previously thought.

4. Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing. 5. Try not to touch your face, nose or mouth, especially during cold and flu season. 6. Be aware of where germs can be around you and wash your hands often. 7. Clean your screen! Keep cell phones, tablets and other frequently used electronic devices free of germs. If you find yourself sick with the flu, please visit one of Baptist Health’s neighborhood Urgent Care locations, or meet with a doctor online through the Baptist Health Care On Demand App.

ASK THE EXPERT

Heel Pain In Children BY DR. CARLO MESSINA

D

oes your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. It occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children. What are the causes? Calcaneal Apophysitis can be caused by a growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel; overactivity in children commonly between the ages of eight and 14; tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle; flatfeet; poor shoe gear or

walking barefoot; and growth spurts. What are the symptoms? Symptoms of this condition include: discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity; occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle; stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running; pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity; and pain that is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity or sits for a period of time and then tries to get up and walk. What are the signs? Parents should pay attention for the following signs their child might display: tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel; walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground; discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel; limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens. What can be done to treat this? Treatment recommendations may include: modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot; rest and ice; stretching exercises; proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel; night splinting to stretch

the tight calf muscle and arch ligament; taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone; custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment; occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing; and physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate. ne typical school morning mommy walks into the classroom with her baby girl. As the teacher greets the student, mommy walks over to the cubbies and drops off the child’s blue and yellow Unicorn Zoo backpack and matching lunch box. Mommy stoops down and hugs her baby girl and says, “Have fun sweet pea,” and then walks away happy to know her baby girl is in great hands. One hour later during morning snack time, all the students sat with their snack ready to eat and sweet girl couldn’t find her lunch box. The teachers looked and looked but could not find her backpack or lunch box. Immediately the teacher called the front office and requested a call to mom to ask if, by any chance, she had forgotten the sweet girl’s bags in her car. Mom was confused at the call and assured the school director that she had left the bags in the sweet girl’s cubby. The internal investigation began. Where oh where could the blue and yellow Unicorn Zoo bag be? After 20 minutes of reviewing the cameras, and searching every other classmate’s cubby, the teachers discovered the mystery behind the disappearing unicorn bags. Turns out that mommy was right! The video showed mommy going straight to the cubby and dropping off the Unicorn Zoo bags, then stooping

down to hug her sweet girl before leaving the classroom. As the staff continued to forward the video to the time when the bag was no longer visible, they found a three-foot-tall apparent thief. The teachers searched the apparent thief’s classroom, where they quickly discovered eight Unicorn Zoo backpacks and lunch boxes. LOL! There was no thief or forgetful mom, instead there were eight children who all had the same popular bags. My advice to every parent of preschool and kindergarten kids is to label EVERYTHING! It is important to label bags, shoes, uniforms, diapers, wipes, sippy cups and even their socks if you want to ensure the items are used by and returned to your child. Labeling will make it easier to identify your child’s personal items, as well as help the child become familiar with their name. Weston Publix Employee Wins Brand New Car BY STACEY BOMSER

T

here’s a brand new car driving the streets of Weston these days. Lizabeth Porras won an Audi Q3 in the United Way of Broward County’s annual car giveaway. Porras, the Assistant Manager of the Publix Super Market at Glades Crossing, has been donating to the United Way through the Publix Employee Giving Campaign. She has worked at the Weston Publix for the past 23 years and is a longtime supporter of this charity. “Giving back is a great feeling. I love helping,” stated Porras. The mother of three children and two stepchildren says receiving the car was an unexpected surprise, but one of which she is extremely grateful. United Way of Broward County President/CEO Kathleen Cannon says it was an honor to present the car to Porras. “It was a great feeling to make Lizabeth smile. Giving back to someone who has been giving back to our organization is always a great way to pay it forward and recognize the good!” Cannon adds, “Publix is one of the United Way’s largest supporters, not just in Broward County, but throughout the region they serve. Not only are their employees donors, but they support major events throughout the year including Tools

for Schools.” The United Way of Broward County is a volunteer driven, community based, non-profit organization servicing Broward County for the past 80 years. According to Cannon, it fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in our community. She points out that the United Way is behind the Weston Alliance for Youth. “Their town hall meetings have different topics and themes and are open to parents, teachers and students.” Weston students can also join the United Way of Broward County Commission on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention’s Broward Youth Coalition. It empowers youth leaders to become agents of change and promote healthy, drug free communities. For more than 19 years, United Way of Broward County has presented a new car to one lucky person, thanks to the generosity of the Holman Automotive Group. Throughout the year, residents who donate a minimum of $365 ($1 a day) to the United Way of Broward County are entered into a drawing to win a new car. Porras’ name was drawn from a pool of more than 10,000 entries. She received a 2018 Audi Q3 from Audi Pembroke Pines.

Field Trips Expose Weston Girl Scouts to STEM Subjects BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or more than a century, Girl Scouts has been helping shape and empower girls to become future leaders. From learning entrepreneurial and business skills through the annual Girl Scout cookie sale to acquiring safety and survival skills during campouts, the organization readies girls for tomorrow. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the focus Girl Scouts is placing on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Over the summer, Girl Scouts from Weston took part in two special STEM-related field trips. Troop 14005 Co-Leader Jennifer Storey says girls from the Royal Palm Service Unit, which includes Weston, toured the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Miami to learn more about what happens after you hit the yellow ‘Place Your Order’ button. “The tour showed the girls how Amazon operates, and it helped expand the girls’ views on how technology impacts everyday logistics. The girls were amazed at the warehouse’s automated systems as well as the commitment to recycling.” Storey says it was fascinating to watch technology in action. “The products are vertically stored in bins and shelves. When an order is placed, robots that look like Roombas on steroids pull and move the goods across the warehouse floor to worksta-

tions where real people handle the rest of the fulfillment process.” A second field trip featured a visit to the recently renovated Fox Observatory at Markham Park to earn some of the requirements for the Space Explorer badge. Storey says the girls enjoyed an evening of science, space and stargazing. “Through the telescopes, they saw the moon, planets and constellations,” notes Storey, adding that the girls also had the opportunity to talk to local astrophysicist Hellen Tavora, who went to the stratosphere aboard SOFIA (NASA’s Stratosphere Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) in 2014. “She’s a role model for girls in science and space.” Travora further inspires students as a chemistry teacher at Cypress Bay High School. Previous STEM field trips included a visit to the Marine Environmental Education Center at the Carpenter House in Hollywood. “Our girls learned

about the sea turtles and all Broward County’s efforts in order to protect our fragile coastal environment,” shares Storey. “Other organizations, such as Sharks4Kids, have also visited our girls and planted in them the seed of much needed conservation of our ecosystem.” The girls are also learning about the importance of taking care of themselves through physical fitness. Storey says her Brownie troop is partnering with #WeRunHappy to help the girls earn their Fair Play badge. Following a nine-week age-appropriate training program, the Brownies will be ready to successfully complete the annual Rotary Club of Weston’s Run For Tomorrow 5K. Gator Run Elementary Expands Flexible Seating Concept to Cafeteria BY STACEY BOMSER

G

ator Run Elementary was one of the first schools in town to introduce flexible seating. For years, students have been able to sit on exercise balls while completing classwork or conduct group projects sitting on cushions around a low table. Now, that concept has come to the cafeteria. Principal Keith Peters says he has been floating the idea of creating a cafeteria that is more like a restaurant for years. That vision became a reality this past summer. When students returned to Gator Run in August they were greeted with a newly remodeled cafeteria featuring brightly colored floor tiles, planters, which serve as room dividers and give the space a restaurant vibe, and various choices for seating. “We have booth seating, high-top and low-top rectangular tables, round and oval tables. The round tables are in four different colors, which designate the four different sections of our cafeteria,” explains Mr. Peters. “The vision is that once we have our procedures down, students will be assigned to a colored section and be able to choose any seat within that section. This will allow them to sit with students from other classes.”

60 OCTOBER 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

Mr. Peters is a strong proponent of student choice. “Student voice and choice are two of the big underpinnings of my philosophy of education. Anytime we can promote their voice or give them choice we are empowering them to become independent, lifelong learners, which is really the end goal.” This progressive principal says he dislikes the institutionalized version of school that most parents remember from their childhoods. “We have attempted to break from this version by introducing flexible seating and alternate learning environments throughout our school,” states Mr. Peters. “Flexible seating affords our students the opportunity to learn in a space that is conducive to their needs.” He says the reaction to the new cafeteria has been overwhelmingly positive. The students much prefer this to the long rows of tables the school used to have in the lunch room. “The best comment so far has been, ‘Mr. Peters, this is paradise!’” That is music to his ears, as he believes his role as principal is to make students’ lives better. “I am always looking for new ways to make the experience of ‘school’ the best possible.”

Indian Trace Elementary Fifth Graders Produce Daily Student News Program BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents and teachers at Indian Trace Elementary School are glued to their seats each morning, waiting for the start of the daily ITE News. The live morning newscast, produced and directed by fifth grade students, informs everyone of what’s happening at school that day and what’s coming up. Media Specialist Dione Mila oversees ITE News but is quick to point out that the morning news program is totally student-driven. “The students are given the responsibility and leadership to run the program and train each other. I believe that by giving the students that level of expectation and ownership, they rise to the challenge.” The Directors are chosen at the end of their fourth-grade year. The “hiring” process begins by writing an essay about why they should be picked, followed by a “job” interview with Mrs. Mila. The top three candidates are selected to become Directors for the

next school year when they are in fifth grade. Before the school year ends, the outgoing Directors train the new ones on how to use the soundboard, the Newtek Tricaster virtual newsroom equipment, cameras, microphones, and computers.

The Directors serve as the News Anchors for two weeks during their fourth-grade school year. The top three runner up candidates are chosen to be the News Anchors for the last two weeks of the fourth-grade year and

the first two weeks of the fifth-grade year before the fifth grade teachers start picking students to participate in ITE News. The previous anchors train the new ones to write scripts, use the camera, find information, and practice their ‘on-screen’ presence. About 60 students get to participate in the program each year. While ITE News is a fifth-grade production, other students are sometimes featured on the program. For example, Mrs. Chokshi, the guidance counselor, does her Bucket Filler Friday segment, which celebrates students who have been caught doing something nice for someone else. Once a month, Principal Winder and Mrs. Chokshi recognize the Students of the Month as part of the Terrific Tracer program. The recipients get to come on the news and be praised for their demonstration of desirable character traits. As a media specialist, Mrs. Mila says Thursday is one of her favorite

days. “That’s when the Reading Girls go on to celebrate all the great reading taking place at Indian Trace. We also feature a Reader of the Week, who comes on with the Reading Girls and inspires other students to improve their reading.” Being part of ITE News is considered an honor at Indian Trace Elementary. “The kids love it when students in the younger grades approach them and say, ‘I saw you on the news!’ They really become celebrities in our school,” shares Mrs. Mila, noting that being a member of the ITE News crew is something students in the lower grades aspire to do come fifth grade.

Gator Run Teacher Named Operation Smile Educator of the Year BY STACEY BOMSER

I

n just two years, kindergarten teacher Shannon Perry-Martinez has made such an impact with the Operation Smile Club at Gator Run Elementary School that she was named Educator of the Year during Operation Smile’s International Student Leadership Conference. The award is presented to a teacher who has devoted his/her time, effort and knowledge to supporting Operation Smile by spreading awareness and helping run an Operation Smile student club. Operation Smile provides free surgeries to children and young adults who are born with cleft lip, cleft palate or other facial abnormalities. There are over 900 student clubs around the world. The Gator Run club has more than 50 members in grades three through five. Mrs. Martinez says she was completely shocked when she heard her name read during the awards ceremony at the conference. “It was a total surprise! I was waiting for them to announce the winner and

thinking to myself, ‘I’d like to meet that person’ and then they called my name as Educator of the Year. Totally thrilling!” It’s not surprising Mrs. Martinez was honored. In its short existence, Gator Run’s Operation Smile Club has already accomplished a lot. “The first year we paid for two surgeries and last year we paid for seven surgeries,” boasts Mrs. Martinez, noting that members also assembled more than 100 smile bags for patients after surgery as well as made nosew blankets. Mrs. Martinez says she’s not sure what the club has in store for this year, but the students enjoyed making the no-sew blankets so they might do that again. They might also make little craft kits to entertain patients while waiting for surgery. “I let the kids decide which direction the club takes,” explains Mrs. Martinez. “They decided last year that

funding surgeries was a priority, so we sold Valentine Grams. I can’t wait to see what they would like to accomplish this year.” In addition to helping the students with fundraising and projects, Mrs. Martinez creates teachable moments. “I show the boys and girls videos of patients from all over the world. We discuss the challenges facing these patients and we look at maps to find the different countries Operation Smile serves.” But the most important lesson the children learn is that of kindness. “I truly believe that teaching children to care about others is the secret to making our world a better place,” shares Mrs. Martinez. “When a child is taught empathy at a young age, they are able to live a richer, fuller life. They get so much joy out of helping others.” Weston students will be able to further support Operation Smile this year with a new club starting at Cypress Bay High School.

Cypress Bay Leads the Way in ADL’s No Place For Hate Campaign BY STACEY BOMSER

C

ypress Bay High School was one of only two Broward County Public Schools, and one of 41 statewide, to be designated a 2018-2019 No Place For Hate school by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). This year, all Broward schools are implementing the initiative which promotes anti-hatred and anti-bullying education programs, and Cypress Bay is helping lead the way here in Weston. According to the ADL, the No Place For Hate initiative engages students, staff, teachers, administrators and communities in projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity and foster harmony amongst diverse groups. Schools are expected to develop and complete at least three school-wide activities that enhance students’ understanding of diversity, bias and inclusion. Cypress Bay seniors Joseph Mullen and Angie Gonzalez spearheaded No Place For Hate last year and are taking the reins again this year, hoping to expand programming to reach even more students with this critical message. The two students became involved in No Place For Hate after participating in ADL’s National Youth Leadership Mission. They were nominated by Holocaust History/International Relations teacher Leslie Rheingold.

During the week-long conference in Washington, DC, student delegates toured the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, met with survivors of the Holocaust and other acts of genocide, and discussed ways they can bring the message of ending hate home to their communities. Joseph and Angie made it their mission to make Cypress Bay a No Place For Hate school. Working with faculty advisor Andre Shannon, they were able to initiate programs promoting diversity and kindness. “We conducted two days of informational presentations in which we discussed how hatred starts at a young age and is disseminated throughout society,” explains Joseph. “We used information we had learned in the National Youth Leadership Mission, such as the Pyramid of Hate, which is the ADL’s diagram that depicts how hatred grows gradually from simple things such as stereotypes and slurs into oppression, and how we can stop it early on.” Angie adds, “During the assemblies, we gave our peers a crash course of sorts on all of the information we learned at the conference so there could be more of us working towards making our community more tolerant and loving.” Other No Place For Hate programs included anti-

cyberbullying training and an art contest, where students could express feelings and interpretations of acts of kindness and bullying prevention through poetry, essays and visual art. Plans are to commemorate the school’s commitment to kindness this year with a banner ceremony. Joseph and Angie intend to step up their efforts to reach even more classmates, while also offering their services to other schools starting the initiative. They believe it is critical young people take action to fight hatred. “Young people throughout American history, and especially right now, are the most susceptible to being taught to hate, because we’re impressionable at a young age,” states Joseph. “That’s why students are the most important vessel against hatred in a country where hatred seems to be on the rise. If we can teach others our age to love their neighbors, their fellow citizens, and fellow human beings, we can stop hatred not just at our school but nationwide. At a diverse school like Cypress, we need those lessons in tolerance more than ever.”

Weston Artist Completes Prestigious Art Residency in France BY STACEY BOMSER

A

s a young artist, Patricia Beltran was inspired by the masterpieces of Van Gogh, Monet and Renoir. She dreamed of one day visiting France to paint in the same surroundings as these famous impressionists. That dream became a reality this past summer, when Beltran was awarded the Denis Direrot Grant to attend the prestigious Chateau d’Orquevaux Artist Residency in Champagne – Ardenne, France. She was accepted from among 400 applicants worldwide. “The experience of being in France and realizing I was surrounded by so much art history from famous artists was an incredible feeling,” shares Beltran. “The Chateau d’Orquevaux and its surroundings were breathtaking. So much history. It is definitely a magical place.” She says she was particularly awed by the architecture. “As an artist with a background in architecture and design, I fell in love with the details of the interiors and the landscaping. In France, the green is definitely greener than other places I have been so far.” During the two weeks of her art residence, Beltran was able to capture the beauty of the surroundings and create some memorable art pieces. “Looking at the French environment, I can say I have learned as an artist how to appreciate even more the colors that nature gives us. The amazing contrasts of colors and texture between the greens in the trees, yellows and browns of the wheat fields, the blue variations of the water, and the beautiful orange and red shades on the French poppy flowers in the roadside. On

my paintings, I try to capture and express myself through colors and this experience has inspired me even more to explore the beauty of colors and different textures.” In addition to her surroundings, Beltran says she was inspired by her fellow residents. The program accepts artists from around the world who shared their talent and cultures. “In the art residence at the Chateau d’Orquevaux, part of the program included an Open Studio Day where all the artists came to visit each other’s studio and have a chance to introduce yourself and your art,” explains Beltran. “We were a total of 15 artists in the residence. I was able to learn more about different techniques in silk, mixed media art, and collage.” Beltran says attending the artist residency program has opened new doors in her art career. “I have recently been invited to paint live at a fundraising gala for B the Difference, a foundation working to help find a cure for Neurofibromatosis.” She encourages other artists to pursue Water fall their dreams. “As an artist I had a dream and chose to chase my dream. The road was not always easy, but I never stopped or deviated from my passion to art. Chase your dreams – they will become a reality, but only if you first believe in yourself.

Why Is My House Not Selling? BY ROSE SKLAR utting your family home on the market can be an emotional and sometimes difficult time. There are many factors to take into consideration when contemplating why a home is not selling. Remember, you are moving. Pack, purge, donate, clean, organize and declutter to show maximum space. Remove dated decor, rugs and drapes. Polish your floors and show them off. Take down personal photos. Get rid of carpet runners and furniture that blocks doors and hallways and potentially carry an odor. It all matters today. When a buyer and realtor are ready to view your home, leave the house. Buyers need to emotionally attach themselves to the house and picture themselves living there. This doesn’t happen with the owner present. They need to speak freely as if they are in their own home. If you have a pet, take it with you if you can. Professional photography is a must. Buyers start their search on the internet. Every click matters when trying to capture a buyer’s attention. Many times, aerial photography is needed as well as a video. Are you selling your home with a friend? Remember, this transaction is probably one of your largest investments and it is important to step back and make sure you have the right professional represent your best interest. Always hire a realtor from the area who can yield more showings, more competition and a higher sales price. Is anything broken? Fix what does not work or remove it. It will be discovered at the home inspection. Better to be proactive. Make the home available for all showings. The buyer will cross off their list those homes that are difficult to see. Re-evaluate your price every month. Make sure you are basing your asking price on the most recent closed sales, not your break-even price or escalated value. Be realistic about what your property is truly worth. Consider the competition. Even if the same model on your street sold higher, it may have a better view or new upgrades. These items will be reflected in the sale price. Mortgage affordability may be an issue for millennial buyers. We need financial institutions to ease up on their stringent lending models and acknowledge the biggest upcoming buyer pool, many of whom are entrepreneurs and have more non-traditional careers. Perhaps the biggest indicator is what is going on in your local market. Although mortgages have become cheaper, with the historically low rate currently hovering under 4% for a 30-year fixed, home prices haven’t come down. And, while salary increases are on the rise, they haven’t caught up with the rising home prices. This means many homes currently on the market are priced higher than what people are able or willing to pay.

ngela Golden Bryan has lived in Weston for the past 20 years but remains deeply connected to her roots in St. Croix. Although one of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix’s rich history is unknown by most Americans. That may be changing with the release of Bryan’s book, Fireburn The Screenplay: A story of passion ignited, based on the history of St. Croix. It tells the story of the brave islanders who fought against unfair labor conditions in a revolt known as Fireburn. After slavery on the island was abolished in 1848, Bryan says the freed men and women were given jobs on plantations. “These laborers were subjected to inhumane living and working conditions and on October 1, 1878, a labor revolt occurred. During the revolt, a large portion of the island of St. Croix was burned, hence the name Fireburn. The Fireburn forever changed the economy of the Virgin Islands and is commemorated each year on the anniversary of the event.” Having grown up in St. Croix, Bryan was familiar with Fireburn, but didn’t become passionate about the subject until she discovered

Reclaiming Your Body – The New Modernized Body Makeover BY DR. TAMY FAIERMAN

L

osing a great deal of weight, whether through diet and exercise, pregnancy or bariatric surgery, is a transformational event in a person’s life. As a result, often post pregnancy and weight loss patients are left with small and sometimes even large amounts of excess, sagging skin and fat. Stretching and abdominal laxity contributes to changes in the breasts, abdomen, and thighs that stay with your body long after giving birth or losing weight. Most often people find no amount of exercise such as running, spinning, ballet barre or Pilates can address the entire problem, especially since exercise is not able to tighten loose skin. So, what are some of the most common and ideal surgeries to consider after weight loss? Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck: This particular surgery can be conducted as a standalone procedure or as a part of an entire body lift. As the name suggests, it focuses on the abdominal area. This surgery can help the patient achieve a flatter stomach and tighten weak abdominal muscles. Breast Lift: Breasts tend to droop after major weight loss. This surgery involves removing excess loose tissue and skin and re-positioning the nipple. In some cases of severe volume loss, breast implants are used. Liposuction: Liposuction or “lipo” reshapes and slims specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits and improving your body’s contour and proportion. Liposuction can be performed along with other surgical procedures such as breast reduction or a tummy tuck or performed alone. What else has changed with body procedures in modern plastic surgery? Modern cosmetic surgery technologies, procedures and treatments are making it faster and easier to look and feel our best at the various stages in our lives, thus decreasing the postoperative discomfort and downtime. Today women, especially, feel more attuned to taking care of themselves from the perspective of mind, body and soul. A plastic surgeon with a holistic approach towards surgery can use complementary natural techniques to enhance postsurgical healing. Holistic and integrative preparation prior to surgery usually results in a quicker, better and less painful healing process. Because a body makeover encompasses many aspects of surgically transforming and renewing the body, adjunct pre- and post-procedure modalities may include working with a nutritionist for continued overall health improvement, acupuncture treatments for improved pain management, meditation and yoga for stress reduction, lymphatic drainage massage, homeopathic medications before surgery to improve wound healing and organic body skincare. A surgeon’s goal is to produce natural-looking results that will bring your body into balance, thus helping you feel reconnected with your physical self, and to experience a healthy form of renewal. Getting the mind and the body working together pre- and post-surgery is a transformative and lasting experience for those ready to undertake this journey. Dr. Tamy M. Faierman is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, writer, beauty and wellness expert, and founder of the Tamy M. Faierman Holistic Spa and Wellness Center. Her office is located at 17130 Royal Palm Boulevard, Suite 1, in the Windmill Professional Campus. For more information, please call 954-322-2742 or visit www.reshapeyourimage.com.

Just a Baby Tooth

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Help For Plantar Fasciitis

BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN ou are accompanying your child for their regularly scheduled visit to the dentist and you hear those dreaded words “your child has a cavity.” Initial emotions usually consist of anger. You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird and Monsters Inc.). The toothpaste is bubble gum flavored. There are three hundred dinosaur floss handles in the drawer, a water irrigation system, and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care. After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So, what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then it dawns on you. It is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth, aka “baby” teeth, have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion, chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance. The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and in most cases save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just as important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits which will reward them into their adulthood.

BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER t’s first thing in the morning; you jump out of bed ready to take on the world.... Suddenly you stop dead in your tracks before even taking two steps. That sharp, debilitating pain in the arch of your foot is there again. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common foot problems. It is typically felt as a localized pain on the bottom of the foot anywhere from the forward portion of the heel up to the ball of the foot. The pain can range from very sharp to just a slight soreness or tightness through the arch and is usually felt only upon weight-bearing. Most people who suffer from plantar fasciitis report the pain is worst when starting to walk after sitting or lying for an extended period of time, or when walking or running uphill, quickly or for long distances. Though plantar fasciitis is essentially an inflammation of the tough band of fascia that extends from the heel bone to the ball of the foot, its causes are many. In the vast majority of cases the primary cause is overpronation of the foot during its gait cycle. Overpronation refers to an excessive inward rolling of the foot between heel contact and toe-off. When the foot rolls in more than it should, the plantar fascia becomes overstretched. If this occurs repeatedly over long distances, or if the arch of the foot is placed under unaccustomed stress such as hill climbing, jumping or fast running, the overstretched plantar fascia becomes irritated, inflamed and painful. Plantar fasciitis can also afflict people who are relatively sedentary, but spend a lot of time on feet that either overpronate or have fallen arches. Treatment for plantar fasciitis begins with first controlling the inflammation of the fascia. Rest from running or other vigorous weight-bearing activity and ice packs applied regularly to the arch of the foot are two immediate self-remedies one can use. While the inflammatory condition is being resolved, the underlying causes of the fascia irritation must be determined and addressed. If your chiropractor diagnoses overpronation or other biomechanical foot problems, custom fitted orthotic insoles can be made to help control the abnormal foot mechanics. To assist patients return to normal walking or running as quickly as possible, we also treat the muscle imbalances that are often associated with plantar fasciitis. A new technique of muscle/tendon/ligament therapy is particularly effective for this and other soft tissue conditions. Essentially, this new treatment utilizes neurological reflex mechanisms to “trick” the affected tissue into immediately relaxing, becoming instantaneously stronger and more flexible. The doctor can then guide the patient in specific exercises to further strengthen the arch, such as scrunching a towel or ball with the toes, and to stretch tight/short calf muscles.

The office of Dr. Maria Maranzini-Grosman (Board Certified Pediatric Dentist) and Dr. Alon Grosman (Specialist in Orthodontics) is located at South Flamingo Road on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

FAMILY LAW TRAINED IN THE COLLABORATIVE LAW PROCESS

BY EVAN BARON am often asked whether having an attorney is really necessary for individuals going through a divorce. I explain that there is no requirement that a party has legal representation but in most instances it would be a disadvantage. This is especially true if your spouse does in fact have an attorney representing him/her. An individual representing himself/herself must comply with the rules of evidence and procedure. That is not an easy task. Of course, this is assuming that a case winds up in court and before a Judge. The reality is that the great majority of divorce cases are settled by Agreement of the parties, either through direct negotiation or mediation. Does this mean that legal representation is less important? That of course would depend on a number of factors, such as the complexity of the case and the emotional state of one or both parties. It has been my experience over the many years that I have been practicing, that decisions made from emotions, are usually the wrong decisions.

In the past few months I have had several individuals come into my office to discuss the Agreements that they have already signed. Marital Settlement Agreements are binding contracts and therefore once signed are enforceable. Realizing after you sign, that you may have made the wrong decision, is not the basis for setting aside an agreement. In many of these instances, one or both parties were without representation. In almost every instance the party who is sorry that he/she signed did so because they were tired of fighting and just wanted to get it done. That gave them immediate satisfaction, that the case was settled. Unfortunately, when they were able to consider the actual terms of the Agreement, each of them realized that a mistake was made. It is possible to set aside an Agreement, but it is very difficult. A person must be able to show either fraud or duress. As stated earlier, a claim that a mistake was made, is not a legal basis to set aside the agreement. There are ways to avoid getting into such a difficult situation. Having an attorney guide you through the negotiation process should prevent you from making the wrong decision. Divorce is an emotional experience which can affect how participants react to certain issues. I have seen logical, rational and intelligent people make decisions based upon emotions; such as anger, hate or guilt. Emotions disappear over time, signed Agreements do not. My advice is to never sign a Marital Agreement just to get it “over with”. If you have any doubts, walk away. Listen to your attorney, who can advise you based upon the law and not emotion. So even if your case results in negotiation and not litigation, having an Attorney by your side may save you a great deal of hardship in the future. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Are You Practicing Your Chipping Enough? BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL hipping is one of the hardest parts of the golfing game. This is one of the reasons why many golfers mistakenly ignore the chipping game and fail to practice it on a regular basis. Here are some basic fundamentals of chipping so that you can ace it like a pro: Set-up: The setup begins with three steps where you stand shoulder width apart, parallel to the target and distribute your weight equally in both feet. Before chipping, you have to stand keeping both of your feet really close in a way that only a club will fit in between. Stand slightly open to the target, approximately five to ten degrees left of the target. As for the weight distribution, there should be slightly more weight on your left foot with a 60 to 40% weight distribution. Backswing: When you start to take your backswing, you need to maintain 60% percent of the weight on the left foot. In a full swing, you usually switch your weight slightly in the right foot and shift it back to the left, but when chipping you cannot do the same. The weight is kept on the left foot at all times. The reason being, it is a very small suite and you have to minimize the lateral movements. Otherwise, you will end up hitting many thin and fat shots. Remember that the setting is extremely narrow and distributing the weight on the left foot is important so that the same position can be maintained in the backswing. The Swing Technique: A common mistake beginners make is thinking the swing is small, so they hit the golf ball at a wrong angle, which causes a lot of inconsistency, fat shots, and missed shots. In the takeaway area when you look at the full swing, the entire body starts moving even though the movement is very subtle. The whole body starts the takeaway and everything moves together. In the chip shot you do the exact same thing, the only difference being that you don’t swing it that far behind. Your movement shouldn’t be hand only – you have to use your whole body on the way down. Practice Door-Like Movements: One good way to practice this is to stand upright and pretend you are a door against a wall. Try to make movements the way a door does as it moves against the hinges. From the top of the backswing, your body is going to turn through together and even the head moves according to the movement of the golf ball. Lifting Head Before Impact: People usually say that you shouldn’t lift your head up before impact, but when it comes to chipping you need to turn your head with the ball and make sure the head never turns before the impact. If you keep your head down like in the full swing, you will release the club head and the ball will either run out too much or turn left on you. With chipping, you have to turn your head with the golf ball so that you have better control over the spin and direction. The more you practice chipping, the more you will enjoy the game. Its importance should not be overlooked. By dedicating some time to these chipping techniques, you will definitely see results.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Get Protection and Peace of Mind at South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind protection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range. The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting system which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques. Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are gun ranges and stores frequently

dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy. How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper targets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a background in programming. We leveraged his expertise to make shooting more exciting through technology. Thus, our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, was born. You shoot

88 OCTOBER 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

your actual gun and real ammo at interactive video targets, like zombie games, skill drills, asteroids, etc. The computer provides instant feedback, scoring and analyzing each shot. We also have a standard paper target range for those that prefer a traditional experience. Seems like a great partnership. Was it just you and your brother that started Nexus? Our third partner, Christopher Longsworth, brought the final piece of the puzzle with his background in real estate development and architecture. All the projects in his portfolio are highly regarded as being at the cutting edge of modern architecture, such as Strata at Plantation, and Koi Marina and Residences in Pompano. It was through his vision that the striking architectural design of the building and high-end retail showroom came to fruition. Our guests call our showroom the “Apple Store” or “Guggenheim Museum” of gun stores

because of the spacious, clean and welcoming environment. What else distinguishes Nexus? It’s really the experience we offer. Shooting is the “new bowling”, a family friendly activity. We’re not here to just sell guns. Nexus is the only five-star range in South Florida rated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. We received this prestigious award by providing an unparalleled shooting and shopping experience, as well as superb customer service. We carry one of the largest inventories in the country with thousands of guns in stock. We also have hundreds of rental guns, so you can try before you buy. Our training program is also extremely comprehensive. Our instructors can train anyone including someone who has never touched a gun before to experienced shooters, security personnel, and even law enforcement. We focus on the needs of female shooters too. Half of our staff is female, including our store manager. We have female instructors also. Nexus seems very high end. Is it expensive to shoot there? That’s a common misconception. Even though we are a five-star range and offer the highest level of amenities and quality, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. It’s like driving a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota! n Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. Hours of operation are MondayFriday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm. PET CARE

“JACK”

Ear Infections BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM

T

he medical term for an ear infection is otitis. Ear infections generally begin as inflammation of the skin inside the outer ear canal (the tube-shaped part of the ear visible under the ear flap). Once inflammation is present, discharge, redness, and other characteristics of an ear infection become established. Inflammation of the canal leads to the overgrowth of normal bacteria and yeast that live in the ear; other “opportunistic” bacteria can also take advantage of the inflammation and unhealthy environment inside the ear to establish infection. The overgrowth of these organisms causes more inflammation and other unhealthy changes inside the ear. In some cases, ear infections that start in the outer ear canal can progress to involve the middle ear and inner ear. Deep infections can lead to deafness and other complications. What Causes Ear Infections? Any pet can develop otitis regardless of ear shape, exposure to water (swimming), or the amount of hair inside the ear canal. Ear infections in dogs and cats are most often the result of an underlying problem. Many conditions can predispose a pet to developing an ear infection, including the following: allergies (food allergy or inhalant allergy); ear mites; polyps or other growths in the ear canal; systemic illnesses such as thyroid disease and adrenal gland disease (in dogs); and foreign material in the ears, including dirt, sand, or plant material. Ear infections are painful. Some pets with this condition may even try to bite people who try to touch their ears or head (including their owners). The clinical signs of otitis can vary depending on the severity of the inflammation, but can include the following: ▸▸ Shaking the head or rubbing the head and ears on the floor or on furniture ▸▸ Scratching the ears ▸▸ Discharge from the ears (can sometimes have a very bad odor) ▸▸ Redness of the ear canal and ear flap; the ears may also feel warm when touched Some pets with severe otitis may cry or groan as they rub and scratch their ears. Some pets scratch so severely that their nails create wounds on the skin around their face, neck, and ears. If the otitis is severe or chronic, the outer ear canal can begin to thicken and become deformed. This thickening can make the ear opening very narrow, so cleaning the ears becomes more difficult. Ulcerations on the inside of the ear canal can also result from infection and trauma. Why Are Antibiotics Necessary to Treat Ear Infections? Once the inflammation associated with an ear infection is established, bacteria (and yeast) can create secondary infections. These infections can be relatively straightforward to diagnose and treat with antibiotics or antifungal medications. Still, the underlying reason for the inflammation must be addressed, or the secondary infections are likely to recur. Diagnosing the underlying cause can be challenging and may require additional testing. During a physical examination, your veterinarian may use a cotton swab to collect some debris from your pet’s ear. This material can be placed on a slide and examined under a microscope to determine if the infection is due to yeast, bacteria, or mites. Your veterinarian may also recommend bacterial culture and sensitivity testing of the debris found inside your pet’s ear. This information can help determine the best medications to treat the infection. n Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E.
