Thanksgiving Traditions, Old and New BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET

T

hanksgiving has grown to mean so many different things in America. It, of course, started as a somber day to give thanks for all that we have and to celebrate a bountiful harvest. Tradition suggests that the American holiday commemorates a turkey dinner shared by English Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag tribe somewhere near Cape Cod in 1621. While the historical accuracy of this story may be hard to determine, the underlying message is worth remembering. Giving thanks often gets overlooked these days. Our always-on, always-connected and increasingly adversarial culture becomes consuming. We see young people glued to their phones, older folks angry about the latest political developments on cable news, and parents frustrated and tired, stretched thin between work, kids’ activities and more. For these reasons, it’s more important than ever to spend time with family, friends and neighbors. Giving thanks and sharing with our loved ones and neighbors is really what the holiday is all about. There are few groups in history more distinctly different than 15th-century English religious refugees and Native Americans. Yet, they could sit down together for a meal and give thanks for all they had. Maybe we should do the same. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Weston Bids Fond Farewell to Former City Manager John Flint BY STACEY BOMSER

A

Photos courtesy City of Weston

fter 23 years of faithful service, John Flint retired as Weston’s City Manager. He was the first person to hold this position and was instrumental in the growth and development of Weston from a plot of land on the edge of the Everglades into one of the most desirable communities in the country. Flint is succeeded as City Manager by Don Decker, who had served as Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation for the past 18 years. Flint was celebrated during his final Weston City Commission meeting with recognitions and gifts from colleagues past and present, including Mayor Daniel Stermer, former Weston City Commissioner and current Broward School Board Member Robin

Bartleman, law enforcement officers and fire-rescue crews from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District, among others. He was toasted for his expertise, dedication, commitment, precision, vision, insight and leadership. “Mr. Flint deserves all of the praise and congratulations that he has, and I am not sure that words can satisfactorily describe how important Mr. Flint’s selection as Weston’s first City Manager was,” states Mayor Stermer. “From his tireless commitment to our City, to seeing the contract form of government succeed, and overseeing the construction of the City’s infrastructure in a style befitting the community, Weston is a testament to John R. Flint. Mr. Flint ‘s vision and impeccable eye for detail have set the City of Weston apart from almost any other local government and we all will miss him.” Almost from day

one, Flint made it his mission to structure Weston to be the best for today and the future. In his first Annual Report, he wrote: “Our accomplishments are the rewards of our commitment.” That is certainly evident in the many accolades and awards the City of Weston has received over the years, most recently: Safest Small Cities in America for 2019; Florida’s 50 Safest Cities of 2019; The Best Small Cities to Start a Business in 2019; 2018 Best Place to Live in Florida and Best Place to Live in America; and the list goes on. A longtime Weston resident, Flint believed that people who bought in Weston were building an investment for their lifetime and the lives of their children. That is why he put such pride and detail into building the foundation that would sustain the City’s growth and ensure Weston’s lifestyle would forever be preserved, maintained and enhanced. Today, every tree-lined street, our pristine parks, superior police and fire services, and user-friendly website are the result of Flint’s vision and tireless dedication to making the City of Weston the best it can be.

Retro 80’s Experience Kicks Off WestonNights Concert Series BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he fifth season of the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series kicks off on Saturday, November 16th, with The Pixels – Retro Eighties Experience. It promises to be a totally tubular time for all ages. So, get stoked – this concert is going to be rad! Special Events Manager Annalisa Walker says when selecting a music genre to start the 2019-2020 WestonNights Concert Series, 80’s music came to mind. “We thought it would be a fun, energetic way to kick off the series. Who doesn’t like the 80’s? It continues to live on through today’s music and crosses generations. Whether young or old, songs from the 80’s will captivate you and make you want to move to the beat.” Members of the Parks and Recreation Department first heard The Pixels play at The Balcony on Las Olas and instantly knew the band would appeal to the Weston audience. “The WestonNights Concert Series is one of the most popular events in the City because individuals of all ages can come and enjoy a high-quality concert production in an outdoor venue for free.”

The Pixels – Retro 80’s Experience will take you back to the time of shoulder pads, skinny ties, leggings, and teased hair. The band plays hits from artists such as Tears for Fears, The Clash, Devo, Def Leppard, Cyndi Lauper, Hall & Oates, New Order,

Animotion, Human League, Duran Duran, and many more. According to Walker, their playlist consists of legendary songs like Jump by Van Halen, Material Girl by Madonna, Don’t You Forget About Me by Simple Minds, and Take On Me by A-ha, just to name a few.

Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in 80’s attire. Walker says, “We want everyone to get into the 80’s spirit. Be ready to have fun and dance the night away.” Plans are already in the works for the spring WestonNights concerts. “The February concert is a work in progress, but be ready for some Country, Rock and Top 40’s music on March 14th with The Shane Duncan Band,” notes Walker. “It’s sure to be another crowd pleaser.” All concerts take place from 7-10pm at the event stage in Weston Regional Park. There is a lighted playground next to the concert area where children can play before the show. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Coolers are welcome, but alcohol is not permitted. Guests can take advantage of the food truck offerings. “We typically feature three to five food trucks with an assortment of food from pizza and hamburgers to ethnic cuisine, and even something to satisfy that sweet tooth,” states Walker. For more information on the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series call 954-389-4321 or visit www.westonfl.org/events.

Veterans of Weston Strives to Make Every Day Veterans Day BY STACEY BOMSER

A

lthough only about 18 months old, Veterans of Weston is already making great strides in our community. The not for profit organization was founded to support veterans and their families by providing vital information and services. Veterans of Weston President and Co-Founder Francisco Jimenez says the group has more than 160 members but wants to expand its reach to the 2,500 veterans living in Weston. “We want to do more for vets and our community.” Veterans of Weston was co-founded by Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie, who currently serves as one of its Directors. “My involvement with the Veterans of Weston stemmed from my frustration with the lack of services from the Veterans Association my dad received. After serving our country, honorably, in active combat in the Korean War while in the Army and continuing on to serve our country as a Frogman (Navy Seal) for two tours, he, like all veterans, should be made a priority. Veterans services should be easy to acquire and readily available. Our mission is to create a ‘blanket’ in our City of Weston while aiding our veterans and first responders.” Jimenez, who served as an Infantryman on active duty in the U.S. Army from 2005-2009 and in

the U.S. Army National Guard from 2010-2013, says Veterans of Weston’s mission is simple: “To support veterans and their families through dedication and positively impacting their lives in the City of Weston and nearby communities. To lead by example by working alongside the community and leaders in advocacy, education, networking and fundraising events that will support our Veterans’ resources and availability. Finally, to always remember and to never forget our brave men and women.” The Veterans of Weston will host this month’s Next month, Veterans of Weston will hold its Veterans Breakfast in partnership with the “Last Act of the Year.” Jimenez says this is when memWeston YMCA. The organization will also accept bers volunteer at LifeNet4Families, a food pantry, to a Proclamation from the City of Weston declaring give back to those less fortunate during the holidays. Construction Underway at Bonaventure Park BY STACEY BOMSER

The newly renovated Indian Trace Park opened in September, much to the excitement of students at neighboring Indian Trace Elementary School. Safety Patrol Officers from the school were invited to kick off Weston’s “I Led the Pledge” program. They presented the Mayor and City Commissioners with handmade cards thanking the City for the park improvements, especially the new covered playground. The Indian Trace Park improvement project entailed a shaded playground, renovated baseball and multi-purpose fields, resurfaced basketball courts, fitness stations with shade canopy, Bike Fixit Repair Station, restroom facilities, lighted walkways and new park entrance and parking lot. The City of Weston is in the final design phase for a new community center better befitting the size and needs of the commu-

nity. The proposed 34,000 square foot facility will be located near the current roller hockey rinks in Weston Regional Park. According to the Parks & Recreation Department, planned amenities include multi-purpose rooms, classrooms, an art room, conference rooms, banquet rooms with a catering kitchen, and administrative offices. There will also be an indoor theater. The outdoor space is expected to feature an integrated outdoor stage opening onto a tiered, multi-use event space for concerts, movies, art shows and other community gatherings.

onstruction has begun on Bonaventure Park. This will be the first public park within the Bonaventure community, located on the northeast corner of Racquet Club Road and Botaniko Drive. When it opens in early 2020, it will be Weston’s 15th park and recreational facility. “The new Bonaventure Park will serve the large residential community in the area, allowing more residents to access the City’s park system and amenities close to their home,” states City Manager Don Decker, former Director of Parks and Recreation. The approximately two-acre park will feature equipment for play, fitness and athletics. To ensure child safety, the playground area will be enclosed by a four-foot fence and the unique play structures will be installed on poured in place rubber surface. There will be nearby covered seating areas to cool off. Adults can take advantage of the outdoor fitness equipment featuring a pull-up/dip, squat press, and stretching station. There will also be a half-court basketball court and Bike Fixit Repair Station. For further park enjoyment, Bonaventure Park will offer landscaped open space area, a restroom facility, lighted walkways, and a dedicated parking lot off Racquet Club Road. Dogs will be permitted if on a leash.

Helping Hands Fuel Harvest Drive BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or almost 30 years, students in Weston have been learning about kindness through the Harvest Drive. It started in 2002 as a simple canned good drive at Country Isles Elementary School with children donating food to help families in need within the school. Harvest Drive has since exploded to reach almost every school in Broward County, with the Weston schools still leading the efforts. Harvest Drive Inc. Founder Renee Herman says Harvest Drive would not be able to reach as many families as it does, about 2,400 each holiday season, without the help of Cypress Bay High School. It serves as one of Harvest Drive’s 14 distribution sites. Donations from Weston families will feed approximately 100 families right here in our community, along with another 100 or more families at benefactor schools in Fort Lauderdale. To help fulfill this goal, the Cypress Bay Student Government Association hosts Harvest Drive Collection Days at local Publix supermarkets. The school’s support extends far beyond collecting food donations. Herman says Cypress Bay students are the ones who design the Harvest Drive t-shirt each year, which is worn by volunteers throughout Broward County. “These kids are really incredible,” boasts Herman. “Cypress Bay has taken upon itself to host

the Altruism Awards Banquet each year. It’s a time to recognize all the Harvest Drive student leaders along with their advisors and administrators, as well as our corporate sponsors. It’s really a special night and the fact that these students created it makes it so much more rewarding.” Although grateful for student support, Herman says Harvest Drive can’t happen without help from the community. She encourages everyone to give what they can this year, as need is greater than ever with so many families displaced from the Bahamas now living here. Harvest Drive seeks non-perishable items for Thanksgiving dinner, as well as everyday grocery staples such as canned tuna, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, macaroni and cheese, rice, pasta, and pancake mix. Herman says no glass jars and please no canned vegetables. Grocery gift cards and monetary donations are welcome to purchase perishable items. In addition to food, this year Harvest Drive is putting out a push for hygiene items such as deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, bar soap, body wash, toothpaste and toothbrushes, just no razors. Donations can be delivered to Western High School, Harvest Drive’s flagship distribution site, on Community Drop-off Day, Friday, November 22nd, from 3-9pm. Volunteers will be on hand to help unload your car.

Harvest Drive Founder Renee Herman (back row) with Cypress Bay student volunteers.

Because hunger is a year-round issue, Harvest Drive launched its Helping Hands Box program which allows partner organizations and companies to help pack boxes of food for families in need. Temple Dor Dorim participated this past year. About 1,200 of these crisis boxes are distributed each year. For more information on how you or your company can support Harvest Drive call 954-444-5548 or visit www.HarvestDriveFlorida. com. Harvest Drive is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization; 100% of donations go directly to families in need.

Weston Takes Action to Prevent Food Insecurity in Community BY STACEY BOMSER

D

uring Hunger Action Month, the City of Weston did its part to educate the community on the hunger crisis in this country and what can be done to end it. This included social media posts, weekly e-newsletter articles, issuing a proclamation, and wearing orange to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in America, including here in our community. Denise BarrettMiller, Weston’s Director of Communications, says the City promotes Hunger Action Month because food insecurity is a real and present problem. “People need food, water, and shelter to survive. Children cannot perform their best when they are hungry; parents cannot nurture their children when they are worried about where their next meal will come from. The elderly should not ration their food or do without something else to buy a meal. Hunger knows no age.” Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable when it comes to hunger. In addition to Feeding South Florida, the City of Weston is also a huge supporter of The Harvest Drive, which started over 20 years ago as a canned food drive at Country Isles Elementary and now serves holiday meals to more than 2,000 families across Broward County. “Harvest Drive provides even more than food, which many people don’t know,” shares Barrett-Miller. “They have a full boutique at Western High School that provides gently used clothing for babies, toddlers and teens, backpacks and toys. Mayor’s Challenge Fosters Friendly Competition Between Elementary Schools BY STACEY BOMSER

he race is on to see which elementary school will win the 2019 Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge and take home the coveted Commission Cup trophy. Every school is hoping this will be the year they can unseat Imagine Charter School at Weston, which has held the title for nearly a decade. The Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge One-Mile Family Health Walk is part of the festivities at the 22nd annual Rotary Club of Weston’s Run For Tomorrow on December 8th. The City of Weston started the Mayor’s Challenge Cup program nine years ago to encourage parents and schools to join together in teaching children the importance of fitness and healthy eating for improved physical and mental health. The hope is that children will learn at any early age how exercise and nutrition are essential to winning the battle of obesity in our country. Each year, Weston elementary schools compete to see which school will have the largest number of participants in the One-Mile Family Health Walk, as a percentage of its total enrollment. As an incentive to increase participation, this year every school that has at least 10% of the student population participate will win a cash

prize of $1,000. The Commission Cup trophy will be presented to the school with the highest participation rate. Mayor Daniel Stermer believes a little healthy competition is a good thing. He delights in presenting the Commission Cup to the winning school each year, handing the trophy over to the principal and excited students. Thanks to Rotary sponsors, more money is available this year than ever before and Mayor Stermer anticipates a huge turnout. The Mayor’s Challenge One-Mile Family Health Walk is open to all Weston elementary students, as well as their families and friends. There is no cost to participate, but students must pre-register. Registration information is available on the City of Weston and Weston Rotary Club websites. Following the Mayor’s Challenge walk, families are encouraged to attend the Fitness and Health Festival, which runs until 12pm. It will feature music, entertainment, vendors, and educational exhibits as well as children’s activities, fitness competitions and obstacle courses. The City of Weston and the Rotary Club of Weston are proud partners in the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge One-Mile Family Health Walk. It takes place at 9am on Sunday, December 8th at Cypress Bay High School. The awards presentation will be at 10:30am. n For more information visit www.westonfl.org or www.westonrotaryrun.com

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

‘Tis the Season BY DANIEL J. STERMER, MAYOR, CITY OF WESTON t has been an extremely constructive year, including the passage of our fiscal year 2020 budget with no increase in the City millage rate while maintaining the same high-quality services that our residents desire. I would like to thank my fellow Commissioners, our staff, and our contract partners for their hard work and dedication. There have been many accomplishments in the last 12 months, including: LED Parking Lot Lighting Upgrades; Three Fire Station Renovations; Police Station Renovation; Indian Trace Park Improvements; Street Light Pole Upgrades; Bonaventure Park Design; Blatt Boulevard Stormwater Retrofit; Tennis Center Improvements; Bonaventure Fire Station Design; and ITDD Pump Stations Pump & Gear Rehabilitation. It was a busy and successful year. In November, over 180 public and private schools will participate in the Annual Harvest Drive that was initiated over 27 years ago by local volunteers, with Country Isles Elementary School as the distribution site; today there are 14 school distribution sites. Harvest Drive provides a complete Thanksgiving meal and a weeks-worth of grocery and personal necessities to 2,400 food insecure families in Broward County and provides another 500 families the opportunity to shop for free for gently worn clothing, shoes, toys and household items. Please do whatever you can do to help children help other children so no child goes hungry. Visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com. As winter bestows upon Florida the weather we have all been waiting for, our events season goes into overdrive. The City, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, offers great events for families. These include monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park, magician and puppet shows at the Weston Community Center for children, Symphony of the Americas concerts - both ticketed and free, a Foreign Film Series, the free WestonNights Outdoor Concert series, the Winter Safety Expo, Celebrate the Arts, Weston World Fest, the Royal Egg Hunt, and much more. I also look forward to seeing all Weston elementary students at the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge Cup 1-Mile Health Walk on December 8th at Cypress Bay High School and again at the Mayors’ Chess Challenge on January 11th. Please look for details of these and other events on our City website at WestonFL.org/Events. For the holidays, we always stress vigilance to not leave valuables in sight in vehicles, and to always lock your car doors. Weston is a safe community, but whether you are running into the gym, dropping a child off at day care or pumping gas at the gas station, remember to – Lock it, Don’t Lose it. The same can be said for ensuring that your garage door is closed when you go to bed at night as that provides those who are up to no good the perfect invitation into your home. Lastly, we welcome our new City Manager, Don Decker, who officially took the helm on October 8th at 12 noon. Mr. Decker is no stranger to Weston, having started with the City in 2001 and served as Parks & Recreation Director with extensive knowledge of City operations, personnel and the community at large. We look forward to his leadership, his ideas, his innovation and balance. By balance, I believe Mr. Decker brings a personality and style to the position that the public will find welcoming. We look forward to working together to do great things for Weston. I, on behalf of the entire City Commission and staff, wish you and your families a safe, happy and healthy holiday season and New Year.

ypically, this is not something we think about until our health is negatively impacted and affecting our quality of life. The truth is more than anything else- finance, relationships, material items … health is everything. Without health, we cannot live the quality of life we had intended. How many of us take for granted our health status? And do we really know how we measure up? Without a Functional Medicine approach, you really are missing the boat. Functional Medicine’s goal is to optimize health and prevent bad things from happening not merely being reactive to and managing chronic illness. Most providers of traditional medicines have a focus that is very different as they are reactive to illness and then pile on one medicine after another to treat and manage the symptoms. They rarely have a game plan of weaning you off any medicine they have started. Often times, this approach leads to a piling of medications that simply treat the side effects of the original medication that was administered. The question to ask is … Are you really better with this approach to medicine? Did this really treat your original complaints properly? Or has a band-aid been placed on the item of concern to manage the symptom and not the root cause? I have great news – Functional Medicine is all about prevention and finding the root cause of illness. It is a medicine that uses natural medical grade nutracueticals to correct the deficiencies that may be the root cause of your illness and thus impacting your overall quality of life. In our practice we have had much success in the treatment of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol with management solely on re-creating balance of hormones, life- style and medical grade nutraceuticals through our patented program of Opti-Life. Our goal is to optimize your health and quality of life. So again, how do you measure up? This is where functional medicine shines. Functional medicine uses more stringent parameters when assessing your labs not the regular bell curve which takes into account, 20% of the population which is really sick when coming up with the quote on quote normal range. The Functional Medicine interpretation of the labs is essential to optimization. Using a narrower criteria of “normal” and being aggressive with a corrective plan of care is crucial is preventing health care disasters. For instance, the onset of diabetes and many other chronic health ailments have laboratory signs that were not optimal prior to the progression of diagnosis. Our goal is to prevent these diagnosis’. If you already have a diagnosis and are currently being treated – how is your report card of labs. Are you in the best percentile of the range? If not, then what are you really treating? What is the value of your health and are you ready to find out how you measure up? Let us help you on your journey to Health Optimization. n Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989.   Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. In this presentation, Dr. Ownby will review what we know about cognitive decline and brain aging, what strategies are supported by good scientific evidence and discuss a model that can help people make sense of their brain health.

P

rospective patients often ask, “who should I go to for my cosmetic surgery procedure?” This question, if answered correctly, can make the difference between a beautiful result or a disastrous complication. All too often, in South Florida, patients will choose their cosmetic surgeon based on price. This is the biggest mistake most people make. The first question a prospective patient should be asking is, is my doctor board certified in Plastic Surgery? Many doctors are board certified, but don’t always state which field of medicine they are certified in. You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with well-documented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. (AAAASF) or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced board certified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, assuming the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise, I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials. n Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

Revolutionary Treatment Proven To Reduce Chronic Headaches BY DR. JANE THERRIEN t’s never pleasant to experience a throbbing headache. Unfortunately for millions of people, it’s a frequent and sometimes everyday occurrence. One of the most common and least known causes of these headaches relates to how a person’s eyes work together. Our two eyes are meant to work as a team, and when the eyes don’t align properly, the work your brain does to compensate for this can cause headaches. Staring at a computer or a mobile device for several hours during the day makes the issue even more severe and painful. Current treatment of this type of headache consists mostly of over the counter medications, which are often times ineffective and can be dangerous with overuse. Recently, an exciting new therapeutic lens known as Neurolens has been developed to safely and effectively treat these vision-related headaches. Neurolens technology diagnoses and corrects

The results from this innovative technology have been amazing, with early studies finding a reduction in symptoms for nearly 90% of patients who have worn Neurolenses.

They have been found to help with headaches, digital vision syndrome, dizziness and balance issues, dry eye sensation, neck and shoulder tension, eye fatigue, light sensitivity, and reading problems. The binocular vision system is extremely important in how a person functions, and if that system is not aligned properly, people will become symptomatic. Neurolenses are designed to correct this misalignment and safely and effectively eliminate these symptoms. How Do I Know If My Vision Is Causing Me Headaches? The easiest way to find out if your headaches are vision-related is to schedule an appointment

SightSync device, and a series of binocular vision tests are performed to determine if a misalignment exists in your visual system. At that point, Dr. Therrien will let you know if Neurolenses will help reduce your systems and lead to more comfortable vision. Because Neurolenses look just like any other lenses, they can be put into any frame you prefer. n For a consultation or more information, you can reach Dr. Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, or call 954-888-9393. ook your tickets for this spectacular extravaganza. This fabulous production is always a sell-out. The Nutcraker, best-loved holiday classic, wows young and old with its delightful tale, unforgettable classical music score by P. Tchaikovsky, and magnificent dancing. The story tells of a young girl who falls deeply in love with the nutcracker doll given to her by her grandfather, the mysterious magician, Dr. Drosselmyer. The party with family and friends is enjoyed by everyone. Marie tries to protect her beloved toy from her jealous brother but, alas, the evening is horribly spoiled by his actions. Scary mice appear at midnight and a battle ensues between a Giant Rat King and the Nutcracker. Incredibly, her beloved toy comes to life as the handsome Cavalier Prince, and they are transported through the glittering snow to the Kingdom of the Sweets. Together, Marie and her beau meet the royalty of the Land who reappear as the Dewdrop and her flowers and crown her as their beloved leader. The Grande Pas de Deux transforms Marie into the mystical Sugar Plum Fairy as her handsome Prince leads her in dance. The captivated audience is left asking the question, “Was this really all a dream? Each performance showers the audience with joy and lifts the spirits of all.

Cleveland Clinic Florida Expands “MENtion It” Educational Campaign BY STACEY BOMSER

M

any men are participating in No Shave November this month to bring awareness to men’s health issues and raise money to fight cancer. As popular as this charitable program has become, a recent survey found that most men will do almost anything to avoid going to the doctor. Cleveland Clinic Florida recently launched “MENtion It”, an educational campaign aimed at drawing attention to the subject encouraging men to see their doctor and talk about important health issues. “Unfortunately, many men do not make their health a priority until they have a health scare or a major issue,” states Cleveland Clinic Florida Urologist William Gans, MD. “We hope that this campaign raises awareness about the issues that keep men from being proactive in seeking the preventive care that can improve their quality of life long term.” The online survey of approximately 1,174 U.S. males 18 years or older found that 72 percent of men would rather do household chores, like cleaning the bathroom or mowing the lawn, than go to the doctor. Furthermore, even those men who take their health more seriously are holding back, with 20 percent

admitting they have not always been completely honest with their doctor. Most say they were either embarrassed, didn’t want to hear that they needed to change their diet or lifestyle, or knew something was wrong but weren’t ready to face the diagnosis or would rather not know they have health issues. In addition, 41 percent of the men surveyed said they were told as children that men don’t complain about health issues, fostering the belief that men’s health can be ignored. Interestingly, 82 percent of the men surveyed said they try to stay healthy to live longer for family

and friends who rely on them, yet only 50 percent engage in preventative care. Sixty-one percent said they would be more likely to get an annual check-up if seeing a doctor was more convenient. Convenience is not an excuse for men in this community. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers access to health care through many platforms, including virtual visits through Cleveland Clinic Express Care® Online and Saturday and Sunday morning hours at the Weston Family Health Center, located at 1825 North Corporate Lakes Boulevard. The men’s health survey was issued as part of Cleveland Clinic’s fourth annual “MENtion It” campaign, which aims to address the fact that men often to not “MENtion” health issues or take steps to prevent them. This year, the hospital set out to gauge where taking care of their health fell as a priority for men. Only half of those surveyed said that they consider getting an annual check-up a regular part of taking care of themselves. For more information about men’s health and important preventive steps every man can take visit www.clevelandclinic.org/ MENtionIt.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 11/30/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Bianca – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Annie or Bianca for an appointment. Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club Celebrates Its 25th Season BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or the past 25 years, the Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club has been teaching children the values of good sportsmanship, teamwork and community service. The recreational youth lacrosse league offers programs for boys and girls ages four to 14, and just recently added a travel program at the request of many families. “Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club provides a safe and fun environment for children from Weston, and surrounding communities, to learn and play the game of lacrosse,” states Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club President Richard Barba. “Through grade-level programs open to all, Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club teaches the fundamentals of the game. Our club encourages players to develop a positive attitude and healthy competitive spirit while recognizing that in recreational lacrosse winning is not the primary focus. Our focus is what is best for the kids.” In addition to teaching children

to play and love the game, Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club is committed to instilling in its players a sense of community by completing several community service projects as a league. “Community service gives the kids a chance to learn about giving and teaches them that teamwork and integrity happen both on and off the field,” explains Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club Vice President Erica Judge. “It allows our families to come together and give back to the community and city they love so much.” Judge says the community service aspect of the program is so strong, many players that age out of the

program come back to help with the league’s First Stick Program or to serve as assistant coaches during the recreational season. Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club is a big supporter of organizations that support members of the military. This month, alumni players will be helping with the 2019 Community Salute to Our Military which takes place in Opa Locka. It also supports Operation Gratitude, collecting Halloween candy to send to troops overseas and through the Girl Scout Troop 10259 cookie sale. In the coming weeks, Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club will be holding a toy drive for Toys For Tots. Players, and families, also participate in beach clean-up days through the Surfrider Foundation. n Weston Warrior Lacrosse Club is a member of the Weston Sports Alliance. POSITIVE PARENTING

A Necessary NO BY IVIS MATEOS oday I was inspired to write about the word “No” after listening to a podcast hosted by my dear friend Dr. Aura Tovar. In her podcast she speaks with Coach Tom Ross about the power of the word NO and the intentions we set when we use the word with our kids. One thing that really stood out was when Coach Tom said that the word No is a sentence in itself. No is a word and a sentence of power, of affirmation, which can be used to describe our own values and strength. The word No is used to set boundaries and limitations to what each individual is willing to accept or not accept. Unfortunately, the word No has gotten a bad rap. No has been associated with a negative connotation not because of its dictionary definition, but because of the intention in which the word has been expressed in some cases. However, the proper use of the word is necessary to set boundaries with bullies, to keep us from danger, and to set healthy limits. The struggle to strengthen our internal No, the one we address to our own self-destructive impulses, is the struggle with which we are most familiar. That No controls our vent of rage. We call that No “self-discipline.” According to Psychology Today, the No we are able to say to others also evolves through life, beginning with the primitive Nos of our childhood. Anyone who has ever tried to put a two-year-old into a car seat has real-life evidence. As the two-yearold begins to differentiate himself — his will, his wishes — from those of Mom, he hurls one loud, endless cry: NOOOOOOOO. No, I won’t put on those socks, won’t eat that much, won’t leave the park! That primordial, powerful No is the original assertion of the self against the other. As parents we have the power to teach the important use of the word as a tool for growth, effective ways to draw the line and resilience, as they evolve in a world where they will need to cope with situations where delayed gratification will be necessary and where they are met with limitations set by others.

ovember begins the holiday season and the season of giving. Floridians are extremely generous and give of themselves for those whom we think are truly in need. Charities depend on the generosity of donors to support them for various causes and purposes. Many charitable organizations use your donations wisely; however, some may misrepresent their fundraising intentions or solicit for phony causes. Keep these tips in mind before making a donation.

Watch Out for Scams Scammers take advantage of people by pretending to be a real charity in order to commit fraud. Frequently, bogus charities will exploit a recent natural disaster or tragedy, promising to use the donations to aid victims. It is important not to judge a charity solely on its name. Many organizations may use names similar to well-known charities and organizations. Check Out a Charity Before Donating Ask the charity or organization why it is asking for donations and what purpose will be served. Florida law gives the prospective donor the right to request and receive a copy of a charity’s financial report before donating. You can also visit our online Gift Givers’ Guide (https:// csapp.800helpfla.com/CSPublicApp/ CheckACharity/CheckACharity.aspx) to view a charity’s financial information and current registration status or call 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352). Be aware that many telephone appeals for funds are made by paid solicitors, not volunteers. The solicitors often work for a for-profit firm hired by the organization. Telemarketing is expensive and may entail substantial fundraising costs. Ask the solicitor what portion of your donation will be retained by the charity. Avoid High Pressure Tactics Some solicitors use high-pressure tactics and may even offer to send a “runner” to pick up your money immediately. Don’t feel forced to make a quick decision without getting all the information that you need to make an informed decision. Reputable charities and organizations are just as happy to receive your donation tomorrow as today. If you decide to make a donation, never send cash. Typically, it is best to pay by check, made payable to the charity itself, not to the solicitor. If you decide to make a donation online, look for indicators that the site is secure, such as a URL that begins with “https:” (the “s” stands for secure). Keep Good Records Always obtain and save a printed copy of your donation or a receipt showing the amount of the contribution. Not all organizations soliciting in the name of benevolence are true charities eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. If this is important to you, ask about the organization’s federal and state eligibility for receiving tax deductible donations. Typically, such donations fall under Internal Revenue Code second 501(c)(3). All charities soliciting within the state of Florida (excluding religious, educational, political and governmental agencies) are required to register and file financial information with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. If a professional solicitor is requesting a donation on behalf of a charity, the solicitor also must be registered with the department and should be able to provide you with their registration number. Stark at RichardStark@myflorida.gov or by calling his legislative office at 954-217-0287.

eston Dance Academy has ushered in the school year with new ownership from local dance education company Signature Studios. Penny Burns, the founder and former owner of WDA, will remain at the studio as a teacher and advisor to the new owners, and all staff will continue in their existing roles. “I feel fortunate that we’ve been able to build this new relationship,” says Burns. “The timing was right for me to make this career change, and what a seamless transition it’s been! I can already see that our dance families are in such great hands under the new ownership.” Signature Studios leads more than 25 dance teachers and administrators through the principle of “every child, every day” through its South Florida studios and programs. Delivering excellent customer service to an average of 1,000 families each season, Signature Studios are More Than Just Great Dancing®, adhering to the very best business practices in compliance, ethics, and human resources. Affiliated studios include Boca Dance Studio in Boca Raton and ProAm Dance Studio in Pompano Beach. Melanie Gibbs, co-founder of Signature Studios, says that WDA has been the perfect addition to their family of studios. “What Penny created at Weston Dance Academy has become integral to this community,” says Gibbs. “She really brought a personal touch to dance education here, and we’re excited to grow the studio from her legacy with this next chapter. Parents and children in Weston can expect to see WDA’s positive impact continue to flourish.” With a top-to-bottom renovation complete, the studio began the school year with an updated look and feel. WDA students recently returned from a successful Disney performance, and this season will also be performing at the Weston Town Center, Davie Rodeo grounds, and more. Burns and Gibbs both say that the transition in ownership couldn’t have come at a better time for WDA students. “The future is bright for our kids here,” says Gibbs. “They are thriving through dance, and we can’t wait to enrich their lives further through our programming!” Weston Dance Academy offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, tumbling, aerial silks and proudly serves students ages two to adult. Weston Girl Scout Troops Organize Hurricane Dorian Donation Drive BY STACEY BOMSER

A

s part of the Girl Scout Promise, scouts pledge “To help people at all times.” So, when members of Weston area Girl Scout troops saw the devastation left by Hurricane Dorian, they knew they had to take action to help families living in the Bahamas. Troops 10646, 10759, 14005 and 10045 worked together to organize a massive donation drive to collect supplies to help hurricane victims. “Seeing pictures and videos of what the hurricane did to the Bahamas left us heartbroken,” shared Troop 10259 Leader Stephanie Wagner. “The people Troop 10759 in the Bahamas lost everything. Part of being a Girl Scout is giving back to the community.” The girls took action, using what they know best – social media – to promote their collection campaign. They collected food items, clothing, shoes, bags, books and much more. Wagner says it took several mini vans to transport all the donations to the storage and distribution site. The scouts partnered with the Women Supporting Women Ministries to have the donations shipped to

the Bahamas and delivered directly to those in need. The first pallet of supplies was sent in September and a second was shipped at the end of October. Some of the girls went along on that trip to help distribute the supplies. Wagner says the Weston Girl Scouts chose to work with Women Supporting Women Ministries because one of the troops had worked closely with this non-profit organization in the past to facilitate their Silver Award project. The girls held a huge sporting equipment drive to donate to the YMCA in the Bahamas. They then traveled there to teach the children how to use all the equipment. “Troop 10045 has a special connection with Women Supporting Women,” notes Wagner. “Through their Silver Award project, they got to know the organization and what they stand for.” The Weston Girl Scout Troops are all part of the Royal Palm Service Unit. Manatee Bay Elementary Students Collect Donations for Hurricane Dorian Victims BY STACEY BOMSER

H

urricane Dorian had barely moved offshore of the Bahamas before Manatee Bay Elementary School started organizing a donation drive to help residents in storm ravaged Abaco and Freeport. Through the generosity of families, teachers and staff, the school was able to send much-needed relief supplies to the battered islands. “Our school theme this year is kindness,” states fifth grade teacher and Student Council Advisor Annejeanette Washington Collins.

“Since this storm affected a nearby country that so many of our students know about, Manatee Bay wanted to show the Bahamas that we care about them and we will support them with actions not words.” The project was spearheaded by Mrs. Washington Collins, who is of Bahamian descent; her maternal family is from Abaco, Freeport and Nassau. “When I saw how Hurricane Dorian devastated the islands, I could not sit back and do nothing,” she explains, noting the school also has several students whose families are

from the Bahamas. Mrs. Washington Collins says the outpouring of support by students, families and staff was overwhelming. Manatee Bay collected more than 1,000 donations of water, diapers, canned food, batteries, lights and much more. Student Council members helped sort and pack the donations. In addition, the Labarbera, Tolbert and Turnquest families helped with transporting and delivering the donations to the Bahamas. The school worked with Feet to Faith Community Outreach and the Office

of Emergency Management in Miami to coordinate efforts and ensure that the supplies were delivered to Bahamian citizens in need. In addition to the school-wide donation drive, students in Lisa Weingartner’s fifth grade class donated stuffed animals to help comfort young hurricane victims. These were delivered, along with medical supplies, by Dr. Quan Le, who has a daughter in the class. For Manatee Bay students, the Bahamas hurricane relief effort was a wonderful first lesson in a year-long commitment to kindness.

Weston Art Guild’s 11th Annual Juried Exhibit Opens at Weston Branch Library BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Weston Art Guild’s 11th Annual Juried Exhibit opens this month at the Weston Branch Library. The community is invited to stop by the library to view the incredible works of art created by talented professional artists living in our area. The free exhibit runs November 12th through January 14th. This year’s exhibition will feature approximately 40 pieces of original artwork. Because this is a juried exhibit, Weston Art Guild Vice President Rasma Moon Over Parador by Vidal Rodriguez-Guglielmoni

Yaffa says artists will be displaying their best works. “Our guild members have many varied talents,” states Yaffa. “You can expect to see paintings in a variety of mediums including watercolor, oil and acrylic, as well as collages and mixed media. Photography, computer graphics, ceramics, and even stained glass may be among this year’s entries.” Yaffa says a juried exhibit is unique in that each artist is free to enter their best work without the constraints of a specific theme. The only stipulations are that the artwork needs to have been created within the past three years and may not contain nudes or controversial subjects, since it is displayed in a public library. Susan Convery is the judge of this year’s juried show. She is a watercolorist and illustrator as well as an art teacher. She will be evaluating the artwork based on technical skill, artistry and personal appeal. Cash prizes will be awarded for

first, second and third place, as well as Honorable Mention and Judge’s Recognition winner. “Each winner receives a cash award from $200 for first place to $25 for honorable mention,” explains Yaffa. Battle of the Marching Bands Comes to Cypress Bay BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he second annual Sound of Thunder Invitational marches into town on Saturday, November 9th. Cypress Bay High School will host marching bands from 15 to 20 other schools for this officially sanctioned Florida Marching Band Competition. The Weston community is invited to come out and enjoy this showcase featuring some of the best marching bands in the region. “We host this invitational primarily as a massive fundraiser for the Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder organization,” explains Associate Director of Bands Jonathan Dor. “Ultimately we get to bring a marching band competition to the community that is in dire need of exposure to the Marching Arts.” Dor says the invitational will feature bands performing core-style show as well as traditional style. “Each band’s performance should last about ten to 12 minutes, featuring an entire production built around one theme or concept. Cypress Bay’s show for this year is ‘A Story for Another Night’ following themes related to Arabian Nights, bringing costuming, music, and choreography that surround that theme. Most marching band shows follow a single storyline that may or may not include narration.” The Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder will not be

competing in the invitational but will close out the night with an exhibition performance. All of the other bands will be vying for awards. According to Dor, “Prizes of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are given out in every band category, 1A-5A based on size of the band, and an overall Grand National Champion title is given to the ensemble with the highest score despite the band category or size.” The Sound of Thunder Invitational promises to be a full day of entertainment. The cost is only $15 for all day access, and children under five are free; parking is $5. Proceeds benefit the Cypress Bay band program. Dor says this event will help “fund our program’s daily operations for higher quality staff and instruction, travel and housing fees for field trips, and to purchase music, supplies and props.” There are about 150 students in the Sound of

Thunder Marching Band. Besides performing at Cypress Bay Lighting football games, the band performs at local parades, one of the biggest being the Storybook Parade at Eagle Point Elementary School. For more information go to www.thunderinvitational.com.

ASK THE EXPERT

Heel Spur Syndrome and Plantar Fasciitis BY DR. CARLO MESSINA lantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. It is often caused by excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear, as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time, is often a contributing factor. The symptoms of plantar fasciitis include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel happens with or without weightbearing. Extreme tenderness to touch in the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly associated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs. Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as wearing proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided, may be prescribed. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. A custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury may be recommended. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night splints are

P

utilized to splint the foot while sleeping to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally treatment may involve immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on level of pain and discomfort. Physical therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, shockwave therapy (EPAT) or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used. Endoscopic surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel. Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of the cases if early and aggressive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected, and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. nternational Dot Day was a monthlong celebration at Everglades Elementary School. The event was established to recognize the unlimited possibilities that each person holds with himself/herself. Art Teacher Sandy Goldglantz and Music/Drama/ Performing Arts Specialist Becky Berry integrated that message into activities throughout the month. Gator Run Classes Work To Make A Difference BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents in Lynn Mitchel’s fourth grade class and Maite Hernandez’s third grade class are working to make the world a better place. Both classes are participating in the GOALS Project, a free global collaboration project that connects classrooms around the world to teach young people about the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. “By addressing the global challenges we face, such as poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice, the Sustainable Development Goals serve as a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all,” explains Mrs. Mitchel. The GOALS Project united more than 1,500 classrooms around the world, each assigned one of the 17 Sustainable Goals. The classrooms were grouped into teams so that by the end of the experience the students will have learned about all 17 goals. Mrs. Mitchel’s class was assigned Goal 3: Good Health and Well Being. “Our class noticed that one of the initiatives was to halve the number of global injuries and deaths from road traffic accidents by 2030. We also learned that road traffic injury is the leading cause of death for children and young adults throughout the world. We are in the process of creating

a Public Service Announcement that will air on WGRE (school morning news) that will give hints and tips for safe road behavior.” Mrs. Hernandez’s class explored Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. The students researched the most sustainable cities in the world today and then collaborated on a project that highlighted the various cities and their successful programs. In addition to sharing their solutions with the other classrooms on their team, each class also prepared a Flipgrid board to introduce themselves. This allowed students to learn about other communities as well as the Sustainable Development Goals. Both teachers agree that it was incredible to see the children realize that there are huge global issues that we all have in common and that there are things they can do right now to make a difference in the lives of others. “I feel certain that all of my students gained new experiences and new perspectives through the GOALS Project and that they will benefit from understanding that there is a great, big world out there,” shares Mrs. Mitchel. “And if even one student uses this as a motivation to make the world a better place, he or she might just be the one to solve one of our planet’s pressing issues.”

SAFETY CORNER

Thanksgiving Safety Tips BY DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN hanksgiving is a time to gather with families, friends and neighbors and remind ourselves of all we should be grateful for. Often times, the younger generation will be focused on the matriarchs and patriarchs of the family and eager to continue the family traditions while participating in preparing and cooking of the Thanksgiving feast. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), Thanksgiving is the peak day for home fires, almost four times greater than any other day leaving almost 2,000 families homeless during the holiday season; the single greatest contributing factor is unattended cooking. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services would like to wish you and your family a happy and safe Thanksgiving and offers a few safety tips to keep you and your family safe: ▸  Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. Keep an extinguisher, pot or pan lid nearby to smother the fire should things flare up. NEVER run through your house with a pan on fire. At best you will suffer from serious burns, more often you will spread the fire throughout your house. ▸  Before turning on the oven check inside for any built up grease or stored items. ▸  Stay in the home when baking your turkey and check on it frequently. If you see flames do not open the oven door, turn off the oven and call 9-1-1. ▸  Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should remain three feet away. ▸  Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip. ▸  Keep knives out of the reach of children. ▸  Be sure electric cords are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. ▸  Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet. ▸  Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle. ▸  Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

Dangers of Turkey Fryers: Cooking with deep-fat turkey fryers can be very dangerous. They have a high risk of tipping over, overheating, or spilling hot oil which can lead to fires, burns, or other injuries and should be avoided. Keep these tips in mind, cook with caution, and enjoy a safe Thanksgiving with your family and friends! For more information, please contact District Chief Todd Draizin at Weston Fire Station #81 at 954-389-2015 or by email at Todd_Draizin@Sheriff.org. 72 NOVEMBER 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

HOME & DESIGN

Decluttering 101 BY NEVINE GROULX, ETHNICA DESIGN

E

veryone has a little junk laying around the house. However, some of us may have more than just a little. Regardless of how much stuff we have, we can all benefit from decluttering our lives and homes. According to Psychology Today and WebMD people tend to feel like life is out of control when they surround themselves with more things than they can manage. The mess causes stress and if you’re not taking care of the clutter in your house, you may not be taking care of yourself either. Clutter is anything you’re keeping around your house that doesn’t add value to your life or your home. Decluttering is all about making room for things that matter. Many people enjoy decluttering because it relieves stress by providing a sense of control and accomplishment. For others, getting rid of the junk frees up a little extra space in the house that wasn’t there before. Some people may just need to purge before they move to a new house. Mentally prepare yourself for decluttering your home and keep only the things that you need or use. STEP 1 - Set goals and make a plan that will reduce any frustration as you go. Write down or make a map of all the rooms and clutter hot spots you want to tackle. Do one room or one space at a time and set completion dates for each phase of your cleanup. STEP 2 - Create a sorting system, as you go through each room and each space. Use “The Three Box Method” and label each of them: KEEP, TOSS, STORE. STEP 3 - Recycle, donate, or have a garage sale or if you have much to

get rid of. Moderation is key, it’s okay to have a few décor items such as lamps or pictures so the space will feel more calming, inviting, and peaceful. With less clutter, there will be more room for you, your family, and your friends. Make a commitment to yourself that once an area is decluttered, it will no longer become storage space. It is almost impossible to feel peaceful in a cluttered and chaotic environment. You’ll enjoy the freedom of all the space you’ve reclaimed. You deserve a place to come to at the end of the day that is a sanctuary, to truly relax. Treat your house with love and respect and get the clutter out. The Key to Aging Beautifully and Naturally Over Time BY DR. TAMY FAIERMAN n today’s world, anti-aging awareness is on everyone’s mind. I prefer to actually call this awareness “conscious aging.” We all know that once the first signs of aging appear, the process seems to progress quickly. In order to tackle the inevitability of aging in an aesthetically natural and beauty and wellnessoriented manner, we must first understand how our faces change through time. To begin with, let’s keep it simple and compare your face to the fabric on a chair: you first notice a small stain, which can be lightened to appear invisible. Over time that stain becomes more prominent and others appear around it, making the fabric seem even more stained. Then, one day, you notice the fabric isn’t as firm as it used to be, having lost its elasticity in some areas. Upon further inspection, your once plump and cushioned chair has become saggy and sunken, exposing parts of the chair’s skeleton. And then one day, you attempt to sit on your chair and the sturdy framework that lent you faithful support all of those years, finally gives in and crumbles. This is very similar to what happens to the face. The chair’s fabric is your skin, revealing the earliest evidence of discoloration. The plump cushion is like your youthful cheeks, which are made up of all the underlying muscles and fat. And, the framework, which holds it all together, is similar to your facial skeleton. These seemingly minimal changes in your framework are often masked through time by the superficial cushioning of your facial muscles and fat pads, until redistribution and loss of tissues reveal a frail structure. Lastly, it is important to understand the implications of facial bone loss on the aging face in order to restore a natural youthful appearance. The facial skeleton experiences morphological changes and an overall decrease in volume with increasing age. As we approach our early 30s, bone density begins to undergo a gradual rate of decline. The aging process happens simultaneously. The facial muscles and fat pads decrease in volume, while the skin that holds them together loses its elasticity, culminating in a true spiraling domino effect. From the top down, your temples appear more hollow, upper eyelids begin to sag, the cheeks begin to lose volume, heavy fatty deposits become more prominent beneath your eyes, followed by folds around your mouth (laugh lines), which weigh down the corners of your lips, and jowls begin to form along your jawline and a heavier, saggy neck arises. If your goal is to age gracefully, and have a “less is more” approach, quick fixes are never the solution! Rather, starting earlier with a board-certified Plastic Surgeon will always yield the best results. A slow and steady planned approach involves maintenance through skin care with regular use of SPF and antioxidants, periodic laser treatments, fillers and neuromodulators. All help support the aging process in a natural, progressive, age appropriate and conscious manner.

eck pain: at some point in life, most of us fall victim to it. Like other kinds of muscle and joint pain, neck discomfort can be caused by many things, from the benign such as prolonged reading in an awkward position, to the more serious such as an underlying disease process. Though most neck pain is not associated with life-threatening disease, chronic neck pain and its underlying causes can profoundly effect quality of life and long-term health potential. Recurring pain or stiffness of the neck, arm or upper back, or symptoms persisting longer than one or two days should have professional evaluation. Chiropractic doctors are specialists in the assessment and treatment of muscle and joint problems, including neck and neckrelated pain. As accurate diagnosis of neck pain is extremely important, your chiropractor will begin with a detailed history of your symptoms. This is followed by a thorough examination of the neck and associated regions, including appropriate orthopedic, neurological and vascular tests. Since your chiropractor is particularly concerned with the structural and functional health of your spine, specific chiropractic examination techniques will be used to assess spinal position and motion. X-rays may be taken to assist in the diagnosis, as may other specialized examination procedures when warranted. Next to inlaws, faulty spinal mechanics is the primary cause of most neck pain. Functional problems of the spine can usually be traced to incorrect spinal alignment due to abnormal posture and previous trauma. Closely associated with abnormal posture are other causes of neck pain such as repetitive strain, muscular weakness and stress producing muscular tension. Old spinal injuries inappropriately treated and chronic postural problems can also result in degenerative arthritic changes to the joints and discs of the neck. As the vast majority of neck pain is directly related to mechanical spinal problems, be they postural, traumatic or stress-related in origin, chiropractic care focuses on correcting abnormal spinal mechanics. Restoring normal position and movement to the spine not only relieves pain, it also protects against more chronic and serious health problems associated with abnormal spinal function: degenerative arthritis, softtissue deterioration and nervous system effects. So next time you start reaching for the bottle of pain medication, think: is merely masking the symptom the most intelligent solution to your problem neck? Don’t just hide the problem, fix it! For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Browner and Dr. Behar at Windmill Health Center in Weston at 954-217-4881. They have an additional location in Pembroke Pines; contact the Weston location for more information. OURCITYMEDIA.COM | OUR CITY DAVIE | NOVEMBER 2019 76

The Basic Issues Of Divorce

After Hours: 954-850-3357

BY EVAN BARON t seems that DIVORCE is often misunderstood. Unfortunately everyone seems to know someone who is either going through a divorce or has been divorced. Everyone has heard various “horror stories” about someone’s divorce case. Many people who come to my office for a consultation are lost or confused as to what may lie ahead. A common question is “how do I start this?” Even though every case is obviously different from the next, most cases deal with the same general issues one might encounter in a divorce. I thought it might be helpful to briefly touch upon each one of these. 1. Equitable Distribution: This is the principle by which assets accumulated and debts incurred during the marriage are divided. In most cases the division will be an equal division of both assets and debts. This however is not always true. Florida Statutes allows a Judge to consider various factors in determining the possibility of an unequal distribution. In addition, non marital assets (assets owned prior to the marriage or received from a source unconnected with the marriage; such as an inheritance) will not be divided unless these assets were co-mingled with marital assets or gifted to the other spouse. 2. Alimony: Alimony is not an issue in every case. There are a number of factors which must be considered in addressing alimony. There are several different kinds of alimony which are contained within the law. The one most people think of is “permanent alimony”, which is a sum of money paid on a monthly income until death or remarriage by the receiving spouse. This is based upon, among other factors, length of marriage, lifestyle of the parties and need and ability. There are however other forms of alimony which can be addressed. These are usually for a specific time period, with a beginning and ending date. These payments can be classified under Rehabilitative Alimony (a sum of money to allow a spouse to further his/ her education or training), “Bridge the Gap Alimony” (a sum of money paid monthly for a term of months or years) or Lump Sum Alimony (a lump sum payment). 3. Child Support: To be paid by the parent who has the lesser amount of time sharing to the parent who has the greater amount of time sharing, based upon the “net” income of both parties and the Child Support Guidelines. Day care, after school care and health insurance costs for the minor children are additional. Child Support in Florida ends when a child turns 18, or if he/she has not yet graduated from High School, it can continue until either graduation or the child’s 19th birthday. Neither parent has a legal obligation to support a child after graduation from High School. There is therefore, no legal basis to request child support to assist for a college education. If however, either parent agrees to assist a child through college and it is contained within a written settlement agreement, such a provision is enforceable through the courts. The above are some issues which generally arise in a divorce/dissolution case. It is not all inclusive and as stated before, each case is different. If you have any questions about your rights and or obligations please give my office a call to schedule a free consultation.

REAL ESTATE

What to expect from Your Real Estate Agent? The 4 C’s BY ANGIE GUERRERO hen you decide to sell your home or purchase one, you need to go into the process prepared with economic and procedural information. A Real Estate Agent has a “fiduciary duty” to their clients. This means he/she is obligated to act in their client’s best interest. The seller’s interest is to sell the home for the most money possible while the buyer is interested in purchasing the home for the least amount of money possible. Here are a Real Estate agent’s fiduciary duties: Complete Disclosure: He/she must disclose all information relevant to the principal’s interests. This includes any facts about the value or desirability of the home and any other information that may affect the transaction. Confidentiality: When disclosing the opposing party’s secrets comes a duty to protect those of the principal. If the seller’s client is motivated to sell the home because of a job transfer, but wants the information kept from anyone, the agent must keep

W

the information confidential. Compliance: When representing a buyer or seller, the real estate agent is obligated to respect the client’s instructions, as long as these instructions are legal. Commitment: Your agent will do everything he/she can to gain an advantage for you. This is why, even though in many states it is legal for an agent to represent both parties in the transaction, it is not wise for the agent or the consumer. What Else Should You Expect From Your Real Estate Agent? Home Search – If you told your agent you want a one-story home with four bedrooms and two bathrooms and he keeps showing you homes with 1.5 baths, your agent isn’t paying attention to your needs. Determining value – To help you determine if the list price is appropriate and how much to offer for the home, your agent should give you a Market Analysis for the home you would like to make an offer. Disclosure – Aside from fiduciary duty to disclose what he/she knows about the other party, the real estate agent also has to disclose any property defects that are observed. Purchase Contract – A real estate agent should

explain to you the entire purchase agreement before asking you to sign it. The agreement should be in a manner that protects your needs and interests. Counter offer – If a seller counters your offer or you need to amend the purchase agreement to request repairs, the agent must explain the process and advise you to seek legal counsel if needed. Acceptance – Once an offer is accepted the real estate agent will provide advice about doing a home inspection, stay in contact with a title company and lender to ensure that deadlines are met, and always attend the closing with you. Your agent must be a member of the National Association of Realtors® (NAR). They are the only agents allowed to call themselves Realtors®. Angie Guerrero graduated St. Thomas University with a B.S. Will CBD Give You The Relief You Have Been Hoping For? BY JOHN BRODIE

“C

BD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications.” -The Harvard Medical School Health Blog Another study demonstrated the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. Conditions that may respond favorably to this treatment: ◆ Diabetes ◆ Rheumatoid arthritis ◆ Epilepsy ◆ Antibiotic-resistant infections ◆ Alcoholism ◆ PTSD ◆ Neurological disorders ◆ Alzheimer’s disease ◆ Depression ◆ Menstrual cramps ◆ Migraine headaches I sat down recently with Charles Smith, the Founder of UPS Wellness. After 15 years of marketing tobacco products, he decided it was time to start investing his effort and skills into products that actually help people. After trying CBD to help manage workplace stress and considering CBD’s beneficial effects with no evidence of any negative side effects, Charles became convinced this was the product that he wanted to spend his time and effort marketing and promoting.

Realizing that product integrity and consumer education would be the key to long term success, Charles founded UPS Wellness and sourced a high quality extract from PCR hemp. UPS Wellness CBD is sourced from PCR hemp, not industrial hemp Purified twice (first to remove waxes, chlorophyll, lipids, etc.; second to remove THC) PCR Hemp Oil is an acronym for Phyto-Cannabinoid Rich, a direct reference to the sum total number of cannabinoids found in the oil. It is the purity and strength of the product that determines its effectiveness. All UPS Wellness products are and always will be: Safe, Simple, and Satisfying. The UPS Wellness product is neither the most expensive nor least expensive on the market but Charles’ intent is to provide the highest “value” based on product quality and

dosage amount. To back up his value proposition, there is a 30 day, no questions asked, money back guarantee and US based customer service. “There is no risk in shopping with us.”, he says. Here’s how Charles Smith finished off our conversation: Leaving a comfortable, well paid job with great benefits wasn’t easy but there were really two basic things that drove my decision. First, I know from personal experience that CBD works and I believe in the potential it has to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I decided that if I was going to spend eight hours a day selling something, it had to be something natural and healthy that would help people live happier, more productive lives. That’s our mission at UPS wellness and we’re really looking forward to making that positive difference.

Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

ompanion animals today have the opportunity to live longer, healthier lives than ever before, in part due to the availability of vaccines that can protect pets from deadly infectious diseases. Over the past several decades, the widespread use of vaccines against diseases like rabies has saved the lives of millions of pets and driven some diseases into relative obscurity. Unfortunately, infectious diseases still pose a significant threat to dogs and cats that are unvaccinated; therefore, although vaccine programs have been highly successful, pet owners and veterinarians cannot afford to be complacent about the importance of keeping pets up-to-date on their vaccinations. Which Vaccines Does My Pet Need? The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) have summarized vaccine recommendations to help veterinarians clarify how to best protect dogs and cats through the use of vaccine programs. AAHA and AAFP evaluated the available vaccines and categorized them to provide guidelines on how commonly they should be used. Vaccines are categorized as core, non-core, or not recommended. A core vaccine is one that all pets should receive. The core vaccines for dogs are rabies, distemper, adenovirus-2, and parvovirus; and the core vaccines for cats are rabies, rhinotracheitis (feline herpesvirus-1), panleukopenia (feline distemper), and calicivirus. Non-core vaccines are optional ones that pets can benefit from based on their risk for exposure to the disease. Examples include the vaccines against Lyme disease and leptospirosis in dogs, and the vaccines against feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus (or feline AIDS) in cats. Categorization of a vaccine as “not recommended” does not mean that the vaccine is bad or dangerous. This designation simply means that widespread use of the vaccine is not currently recommended. What Is The Recommended Schedule For Vaccines? Puppies and kittens generally receive their first vaccines when they are around six to eight weeks of age (depending on the vaccine and manufacturer’s recommendations). Booster vaccines are generally given during your puppy or kitten checkup visits; your veterinarian can discuss the recommended schedule with you. Vaccines are generally repeated a year later. Although puppies and kittens are considered especially vulnerable to some diseases, it is also very important for adult pets to be up-to-date on vaccines. Traditionally, many vaccines were repeated yearly, during regular checkup examinations. However, research has shown that some vaccines can protect pets for longer than one year. In light of these findings, the AAHA and AAFP guidelines note that some vaccines don’t need to be repeated more frequently than every three years. The decision regarding how often your pet needs vaccine boosters depends on several factors, including your pet’s overall health status and risk for exposure to the diseases in question. Your veterinarian may recommend annual boosters after considering your pet’s lifestyle and disease exposure risk. The decision regarding how often to administer any vaccine (annually, every three years, or not at all) should be an individualized choice that you and your veterinarian make together. Protecting patients is your veterinarian’s primary goal and developing an appropriate vaccine protocol for your pet is as important as any other area of medicine. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact 954-385-8389 or www.animalhealthcenteratweston.com.

M

any parents have been educated early in regards to the potential hazards in the misuse of baby bottles. As bottles are used for infants/ babies, they usually contain milk or formula. Parents are now being educated against putting their child down with a bottle for fear of contributing to early childhood caries (ECC). In fact, the occurrence of multiple cavities at this young age, ECC, was for a long time referred to as “baby bottle cavities”. Parents have also been instructed to wean their child off of the bottle as their child approached the toddler years. In comes the “sippy cup”. It is not a bottle. It is spill proof. It is perfect for travel, prevents spills, and kids seem to keep quieter longer when they have them. It is perfect for use… and misuse. The problem is that functionally, the use of the sippy cup creates the same exposure to sugary beverages as the bottle. The use of both bottles and sippy cups necessitate an extension forward of the tongue with a simultaneous retraction of the cheeks. This action causes an exposure of the front teeth to liquid while at the same time removes the natural cleansing effect of the saliva

and tongue. When the liquid is milk or juice, the result is an increased likelihood of developing cavities. The importance of this is highlighted by the 10 % rise in occurrence of cavities in 2-5 year olds in this decade vs. last. The following are sippy cup tips recommended by the America Association of Pediatric Dentistry: 1. Use sippy cups as they were intended, as a transitional tool from bottle to cup. They therefore should not be used for extended periods of time. 2. Sippy cups should be filled with juice or milk for meals only. 3. A child should not be using a sippy cup for bedtime or naps, unless filled with water. 4. Diluting juice does not significantly reduce the cavity causing ability of the juice Whether it is potty training, removal of a pacifier, or discontinuing the use of a bottle, transitioning our children can be an extremely challenging part of parenting. It is our opinion, that patience and consistency are the keys to success. In terms of the transition from the bottle, we highly recommend creating a routine that promotes the drinking of water. Juices and milk should be saved for meal times only. Getting your child used to this early will surely help reduce the need for avoidable dental treatment.
