ou don’t need to wait until January to make a New Year’s resolution to get in shape. Your first step to fitness starts on Sunday, December 10th at the Rotary Club of Weston’s 20th annual Run For Tomorrow 5K and Half Marathon. The day of health and wellness also includes the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge One-Mile Family Health Walk and Rotary Fun Fest. More than 2,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in this year’s Run For Tomorrow. It is Weston Rotary’s primary annual charity fundraiser. The goal is to raise more than $60,000. “You can make a difference in the community today by participating in the Run For Tomorrow,” states Rotary Run Chairman Jesus Sanchez. “Proceeds from this significant community event go to the Weston Rotary Club’s local and international charitable, health and educational projects, which include HANDY, Harvest Drive, Hope Outreach, LifeNet4Families, Sandy Nininger Jr. State Veterans’ Nursing Home, Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center, and Rotary International’s fight to end polio.” The Rotary Club of Weston is also a strong supporter of the Weston schools. It has pledged a $5,000 cash prize to the school that wins the eighth annual
Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge Cup. The prize money plus the coveted Commission Cup trophy will be awarded to the elementary school that has the largest number of participants, as a percentage of its enrollment. Imagine Weston has clinched the title for the past six years. Mayor Daniel Stermer encourages all Weston elementary school students and their families to take the first step toward getting healthy by walking in the free One-Mile Family Health Walk. “This has become one of my favorite events of the year. The Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge Cup represents an initiative to begin healthy habits early in life. Weston was recognized by the State Surgeon General as a Healthy Weight Community Champion, and this walk is just one the
many reasons why. It is a win-win situation for all. Fitness, fun and financial rewards!” Even if you don’t walk or run, the entire Weston community is invited to attend the Rotary Fun Fest from 9am to 1pm. Weston Ranked among USA Today’s 50 Best Cities To Live In COMMUNITY NEWS

T
he best gets better. USA Today is the latest publication to rank Weston amongst its top places to live. In October, the national newspaper ranked Weston #30 on its list of “America’s 50 best cities to live in.” To determine the list, 24/7 Wall St., a financial news and opinion company, considered 590 cities with populations over 65,000 in 2016. It created an index of more than three dozen socioeconomic measures to identify the 50 best American cities in which to live. Only the top performing city in each county was considered after analyzing data in nine major categories: crime, demography, economy, education, environment, health, housing, infrastructure, and leisure. According to the survey, qualities such as cultural diversity, an expansive park system, exemplary public safety, and superior community service at all levels are some of the reasons many people choose Weston as their hometown. Those qualities also led to the City of Weston being recognized for being a community that offers a superior quality of life in a familyfriendly environment. Weston ranked in the top ten percent for both median home value ($455,700) and percentage of residents with at least a bachelor’s degree (59.35%). It ranked in the bottom ten percent for poverty rate (7.2%).
The magazine recognized Weston’s ideal location in the Fort Lauderdale metro area and recognized the fact that this is a planned community. It also noted that Weston is an expensive city in which to live, with goods and services costing about 19 cents more on the dollar compared to the national average, and utilities being roughly double the cost. However, the authors pointed out that Weston residents, on a whole, are more than capable of covering the additional expenses because a typical household here earns more than $100,000 annually – well above the $57,600 median household income nationwide. Even after adjusting for living costs, the study found Weston’s median income is considerably higher than that of most metropolitan areas. Weston was one of only three Florida cities to make USA Today’s list of most livable cities. Palm Coast (near Daytona Beach) was ranked #39 and The Villages (outside Ocala) was ranked #22. This ranking is not Weston’s first accolade in terms of livability. Family Circle magazine named it one of the Ten Best Towns for Families in 2015. Holiday Happenings Around Town

ith Thanksgiving now behind us, the holiday season is in full swing. You and your family can get into the spirit of the season at the many holiday-themed events taking place around town this month. It all begins on Sunday, December 3rd with the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Weston Town Center. This favorite family event is a great way to usher in the holiday season. All ages will enjoy the instant photo booth, live performances of traditional holiday music, and, best of all, snow! Children can pose for pictures with Santa Claus and Queen Elsa as well as play in the bounce houses. A portion of vendor proceeds will benefit the Dolphins Cancer Challenge. The festivities take place from 4-8pm and conclude with local officials lighting the majestic tree in front of the Bell Tower. Like so many snowbirds, Santa Claus will be spend-
ing a lot of time in Weston this season, visiting Weston Town Center on select weekends. On Friday nights, December 8th, 15th and 22nd, enjoy live music while visiting with Santa from 7-10pm. Yuletide Carolers will entertain while children visit with Santa on Saturday evenings, December 9th, 16th and 23rd from 7-10pm. Angie Paulson, Director of Marketing at Weston Town Center, invites the entire community to join the celebrations. “Our goal is to bring everyone together and, hopefully, forge a sense of community between Weston residents. These family-friendly events encourage attendees to enjoy themselves and, in turn, appreciate the amazing community they have here in Weston.” The Weston Chanukah Festival takes place on Sunday, December 17th from 5-8pm at Weston Town Center. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! Donation Drive Helps Animals In Need COMMUNITY NEWS

uring this season of giving, don’t forget our four-legged friends. Pet Sitting at Weston is conducting its tenth annual Pet Food Drive to benefit the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center. This agency provides shelter to lost and surrendered animals and promotes successful adoptions that enhance the lives of companion animals and their humans. “The shelter’s funding is limited and additional resources are always needed, so each year we do our part to help out,” states Pet Sitting at Weston Owner Oswaldo Cuadros, noting that the center’s needs are greater than ever this year because it took in animals rescued from Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. “The food drive is a perfect opportunity for the Weston community to share its abundances. We invite you to join our effort to help make our four-legged domestic friends happier, healthier and more comfortable this holiday season.” According to Cuadros, during the first year of this charitable event, Pet Sitting at Weston collected and donated 225 cans of cat food, 35 bags of dog food, eleven toys, six collars, two dog beds, three boxes of treats, six blankets and 18 leashes. “This year, we have set a target goal to collect 20 percent more items and we’re counting on your support to reach that goal and make our 10th annual Pet Food Drive even more successful.” This year, the Animal Care and Adoption Center is specifically requesting donations of canned dog food, dry dog food, canned cat food, and dry cat food, as well as cat litter, collars and leashes. Towels, blankets and pet toys are not needed. The shelter relies on the generosity of the community and is always grateful for the efforts of Pet Sitting at Weston’s annual pet food drive. In a thank-you letter after last year’s donations were delivered, Thomas Adair, Director of Environmental Protection and Growth Management, wrote: “On behalf of Broward County Animal Care and Adoption, I would like to thank you as well as those that participated with the generous donation made to the Division. 15th Annual JAFCO Spirit of Life Luncheon COMMUNITY NEWS

I
t’s been 15 years since the Weston/West Broward Chapter of JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options) hosted its first Michelle Goldstein Spirit of Life Luncheon. This year, more than 250 guests gathered to support the tireless work the agency does, raising $50,000 for abused and neglected children as well as those with developmental disabilities. JAFCO Executive Director Sarah Franco shared with attendees the special place the Weston/West Broward Chapter will forever hold in her heart because of its endless love and support. “After Hurricane Wilma, when there was no power at the JAFCO Village, the Weston members did our laundry for two weeks. After Hurricane Irma, when we were running on generator power, Broward County Commissioner and JAFCO Member Nan Rich was on the phone with FPL working tirelessly to help get our power restored. I know we can always count on this community to support JAFCO and all of our needs.” The program began by lighting the Candle of Hope, a five-wick candle which represents the five children who die each day because of abuse or neglect. A memorial candle was lit by Ingrid Jaffe for her daughter, Michelle Goldstein, whose life ended tragically during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The luncheon was named in her honor to celebrate her spirit and love of children. A video presentation, Shining Stars, introduced
Becky, a college student who spent most of her childhood living at JAFCO. Becky then addressed the audience, personally thanking JAFCO staff, donors and volunteers for JAFCO Spirit of Life Luncheon Committee saving her life. Becky shared that she grew up in the group home named after Michelle Goldstein. “I saw her picture every day and on 9-11 I would write a letter thanking her mom, Mrs. Jaffe. Growing up, I always felt there was someone guiding me. When the girls in the house would argue, we always felt a presence calming us down and I know it was Michelle.” The Spirit of Life Luncheon concluded with the heartwarming Godparent pinIngrid Jaffe, mother of ning ceremony. City Welcomes Weston University Class of 2018 COMMUNITY NEWS

ne Wednesday each month, Weston’s city leaders welcome a select group of high school students into their offices for Weston University. This one-of-a-kind program allows students to explore the various departments and agencies that make up our local government. The Class of 2017-2018 is comprised of 18 students from Cypress Bay High School, The Sagemont School, and Western High School. The City of Weston kicked off the 16th year of its Weston University program during Florida City Government Week, which was fitting for the seven-month civic education program that teaches students about municipal government through a variety of classroom and hands-on experiences. The first session began with City Manager John Flint talking to students about Weston’s status as a premier municipality and its award-winning operations. Next, City Attorney Jamie Cole provided an education in ethics training and Florida’s Sunshine Law (open government), as well as explained his job responsibilities. The class also met with Mayor Daniel Stermer, who spoke to students about politics, their future and his personal passion and commitment to our community. The day concluded with a tour of City Hall and the City’s Administrative Services building.
The monthly Weston University program days consist of instruction, conversations, observations and hands-on activities exposing students to the numerous City services and functions provided to Weston residents. Last month, students explored our Law Enforcement Services and this month students will learn about Weston’s Community Services. Future programs include lessons on Development Services: Planning & Zoning/Engineering; Fire and EMS Services; and Local Government Finance and Technology Services. The program culminates with a mock City Commission meeting in which students play the roles of city leaders and residents to carry out the agenda. ongratulations to Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer and Assistant City Manager/CFO Darrel Thomas. Each administrator received a 2017 Home Rule Hero Award by the Florida League of Cities. This prestigious award recognizes local government officials across the State for their tireless efforts to advance the League’s legislative agenda and help protect the Home Rule powers of Florida’s cities during the 2017 legislative session. Home Rule is the ability for a city to establish its own form of government and enact ordinances, codes, plans and resolutions without prior state approval. Home Rule Hero recipients are local government officials – both elected and nonelected – who consistently support the Florida League of Cities’ efforts to give members of the State legislature a local perspective to an issue. Florida League of Cities (FLC) President and Tallahassee Commissioner Gil Ziffer, along with Florida League of Cities’ Manager of Advocacy Programs & Federal Affairs Allison Payne, presented Mayor Stermer with the Home Rule Hero Award during a recent Broward League of Cities meeting. Mr. Thomas was attending a speaking engagement furthering financial leadership throughout Florida at the time and was unable to attend the awards ceremony. self-government. The City of Weston is one of more than 400 cities, towns and villages that make up its membership.

The U.S. Constitution makes no mention of the powers of local governments. During the 18th century, cities, counties and parishes across the nation derived their powers from their state constitutions. These local governments relied upon their respective state legislatures for all powers. The 10th Amendment reserved those powers to the state. Ratified on December 15, 1791, as part of the Bill of Rights, it stated: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” In the early 1900’s, states began to adopt Home Rule provisions, allowing cities and counties to enact ordinances at the local level without state “blessing” and without the enactment of special acts, general laws of local application, or similar measures. In Florida, Home Rule language was proposed in the 1968 Constitutional revision, and was adopted by the people. After several legal challenges, the Florida Legislature officially adopted the Home Rule Powers Act in 1973. This ended challenges related to city and county powers. The Florida Constitution states in Article VIII, Section 2(b): “Municipalities shall have governmental, corporate and proprietary powers to enable them to conduct municipal government, perform municipal functions and render municipal services, and may exercise power for municipal purposes except as otherwise provided by law.”

he holidays are a time to be especially mindful of ways your purchases can cost you more than expected. Here are a few tips to ensure that you get the most for your money and the most out of your holiday: ▸▸ When shopping online, it’s wise to pay with a credit card instead of a debit card, if possible. Both payment methods allow you to dispute a charge if the merchandise never arrives or is different from what was ordered. However, with a debit card, the price will have already been deducted from your bank account. ▸▸ When ordering online, look to ensure that your browser has a secure connection. In the address bar, a padlock should appear if your browsing session is secure. Some credit card providers offer one-time card numbers to be used for online transactions to further protect your financial information. Contact your account holder to see if they offer such a service. ▸▸ Don’t forget, when shopping online there are often additional costs, such as shipping and handling fees. Be sure to include additional charges when comparing prices across multiple websites. Some retailers may offer layaway plans or other payment plans so you can pay for that must-have holiday gift over time or at a later time. Before you agree to such a plan, be sure to ask whether the retailer charges fees to use its payment programs and whether the payments and fees are refundable if a purchase is canceled or must be returned. ▸▸ Keep your receipts and be sure you understand retailers’ return and refund policies so you can return any unwanted items in a timely manner and get a full refund.

The holiday season brings an increase in charitable giving each year as many of us open up our wallets to donate to a favorite cause, help someone in need, or otherwise support our communities. Unfortunately, the holidays also bring out numerous scam artists ready to take advantage of the spirit of giving. Below are tips to help you avoid charity scams this season: ▸▸ Be sure you know that the charity soliciting money is legitimate. Check to see if the charity is registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at www.800helpfla.com or by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA. ▸▸ Do your homework and review any solicitation carefully. Be sure you understand how much of the donation will actually go toward the work of the charity as opposed to administrative and fundraising expenses. ▸▸ Never give your credit card number or bank account information to someone who has called or emailed unsolicited. If you are interested in donating to a charity that has initiated contact with you, ask them to send you a pledge form and information about the charity in the mail. Legitimate charities should have no problem with this request. ▸▸ Watch for similar sounding charities. It’s not unusual for scam artists to choose names that sound like the names of legitimate, widely-known charities. Keep your holiday happy and safe from predators. Enjoy the season. ost of the original homes in Weston, if not recently renovated, are showing their ages as well as wear and tear. A great pastime of many homeowners is to tune into the latest episode of “The Property Brothers” on HGTV. While the team pride themselves in total renovations, a mere face lift/update may be the more cost-effective approach for most homeowners – especially when the homeowner decides it is time to sell. Remember – 85% of homebuyers do NOT care to renovate – they look for turnkey, renovated homes because the process of moving itself carries its own stress. Buyers would rather pay the higher price for an updated home – folding the cost of your updating efforts into their mortgage. (Sellers spending $7000 may be able to increase the price $35,000-$40,000 – as per a local home stager in South Florida.) ▸▸ Paint – A Simple First Step: The most impactful and cost-effective first step is PAINT. If doors and trim look old and outdated, give them a fresh coat of sparkling white glossy paint. It will make the entire home look cleaner and more contemporary. ▸▸ Create a Bigger Space: To make a room appear larger, paint it the same color as an adjacent room. If you have a small kitchen and dining room, a seamless look will make both rooms feel like one big space. If your blinds or draperies are the same color as the paint, the seamless look and feel are extended. ▸▸ De-clutter Rooms: Overcrowding a room with “Paul-Bunyan” sized furniture will only make the room appear small and cramped. Wall shelving can add depth to make a room feel larger but be sure to paint the back of the shelves the same color as the walls to create a feeling of depth. ▸▸ Create Serenity – Especially in the Bedrooms and Baths: Create a relaxing setting with luxurious linens and soft colors that will make a potential homebuyer want to sit back and relax. Creating a spa-like feeling in the bathrooms using white towels, white rugs and a white robe hanging on the back of the door will extend a peaceful, spa-like setting. ▸▸ Make Awkward Spaces Functional: I sold many homes with lofts or landings at the top of a stairway. The loft can easily be turned into a second family room with soft sofas using peaceful colors. The space could also be turned into a quiet homework or reading area. This tranquil space adds value to the home and is a feature potential buyers are sure to remember. ▸▸ Build a Lasting Impression: Clear out the clutter and add pops of color. How you live in your home and how you stage your home for sale are two different concepts. Pack away as many personal items as possible. When a Buyer sees that a Seller has started packing, he knows you are serious about relocating and that you may be more amenable to negotiations. When a homeowner decides to sell, he should be open to recommendations made by their Real Estate agent and the home stager. Weston FC Girls U12 Team Wins Third Place at Danone Nations Cup COMMUNITY NEWS

C
ongratulations to the Weston FC Girls’ U12 soccer team on placing third in the Danone Nations Cup World Finals. Both the Weston FC Boys’ and Girls’ teams traveled to New York to represent the United States in the world finals. Established in 2000, the Danone Nations Cup is the world’s largest soccer tournament for players ages ten to twelve. Over 2.5 million children participated in the annual tournament, with just 500 players from 32 countries advancing to the World Finals. The road to the international tournament was exciting for both Weston FC teams. This was the third time in seven years that the Boys’ U12 won a spot in the Danone Nations Cup. The boys’ U.S. National Team (Weston FC) finished the tournament ranked 18th of 32 teams.

This was the first year the Danone Nations Cup held a girls tournament. The Weston FC team, playing as the U.S. National Team, placed third out of the six teams competing. In addition, player Sophia Brelage was named the Best Scorer in the tournament. The Weston City Commission honored the Weston FC U12 Girls’ and Boys’ teams for their accomplishments. Each player received a Certificate of Recognition and then posed for pictures with the mayor and commissioners. This month, the Boys’ U12 team will compete in the inaugural Prospects Cup in Orlando. The global event will bring 16 amateur youth soccer teams from around the world together to compete for the sport’s first youth soccer world championship. Weston FC is one of the eight teams from the United States selected to play in this tournament.

Holiday Fire Safety BY DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF BRUCE ANGIER
A
lthough fires related to Christmas trees and holiday decorations remain relatively uncommon, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious and cause injuries and deaths. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), on average one of every 40 reported home fires that begin with a Christmas tree resulted in a death. This is compared to an average of just one death per 142 total reported home fires. Furthermore, electrical problems were factors in the one-third of structure fires that involved a Christmas tree or holiday decoration. Nearly 47,000 fires occur during the winter holidays nationally, claiming more than 500 lives, causing 2,200 injuries, and costing $554 million in damages, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart. Follow some simple, common sense fire safety tips to decrease the chances of fire in your home during this wonderful time of year. ▸▸ Avoid using lit candles and NEVER use candles to decorate a tree. If you do use them, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked over. ▸▸ Never leave the house with candles burning. ▸▸ Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wire, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear. ▸▸ Use only lighting evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). ▸▸ Do not connect more than three strands of mini holiday light sets, or more than 50 bulbs for the screw-in light sets. ▸▸ Do not leave holiday lights unattended. Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the home or going to bed. ▸▸ Place Christmas trees, candles, and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like fire places and portable heaters. ▸▸ Ensure you have working smoke alarms near your kitchen, on each level of your home, near sleeping areas, and inside and outside bedrooms if you sleep with the doors closed. If your family’s holiday celebration includes a Christmas tree, the moisture content in the needles of the tree play a dominant role in determining the fire hazard the tree represents. A tree which has dry needles can readily ignite and cause a rapid fire to spread over an entire room. Properly maintaining a cut Christmas tree is important to retain a high moisture content in the needles of the tree. ▸▸ Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. ▸▸ Before placing the tree in the stand, cut two inches from the base of the trunk. ▸▸ Add water to the tree stand and be sure to add water daily. Initially, a freshly cut tree may soak up to a gallon a day. ▸▸ Get rid of the tree after the holidays or when it is dry. Dried out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage. Holiday decorations, menorah candles, and Christmas trees are enjoyed in many homes and are the traditional centerpiece of the winter holiday celebrations. However, both real and artificial decorations pose an increased risk of fire. By following these simple, but often overlooked safety tips, you can help protect your family from accidental fires. BSO Suggests Safety Tips for the Holidays COMMUNITY NEWS

T
he holiday shopping season is upon us, and sadly this is also peak season for thieves. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District is offering some simple safety tips to keep you and your possessions safe this season. We are fortunate to live in Weston, one of the safest cities in the country. While the incidence of violent crime may be low, Weston does experience property crime. Vehicle burglary is especially common here, which is why BSO Weston is reminding residents to Lock It, Don’t Lose It. Vehicle burglary is a crime of opportunity. A great majority of these crimes can be prevented simply by removing valuable items from the car or keeping them out of sight. This is particularly important at this time of year when many people are purchasing holiday gifts for loved ones. If possible, do not leave packages visible in the car, especially if going from one store to another. Also, do not think placing your purse, wallet or other valuables in the trunk is safe. BSO cautions that thieves may be watching and waiting for an opportunity to steal. Another simple, but often overlooked, safety tip is to lock the car. Even though most neighborhoods in Weston are gated, crime still occurs. Unlocked vehicles with easy access are a target and temptation that criminals will take advantage of whether you are parked at Publix, the gym, or in your own driveway. BSO wants residents to make it a habit to always lock your car – and take the key fob with you – every
time you leave; even if just for a few minutes to run a simple errand like picking up the dry-cleaning or dropping a child off at sports practice. And when your vehicle is at home, be sure to close and lock the garage. In addition to property theft, vehicle burglaries also put you at risk to identity theft and home burglary. Thieves have access to personal papers, such as the automobile registration or insurance cards, that may contain your home address, not to mention access to your garage door opener. To promote its Lock It, Don’t Lose It message, the City of Weston Communications Department pro-
duced a video on vehicle burglary crime prevention featuring BSO Crime Prevention Practitioner Deputy Kari Pallotto. It is posted on the City of Weston’s YouTube channel. To further help prevent theft and crime in Weston, the Broward Sheriff’s Office offers a Safe Transaction Zone at the BSO Weston District Office, 17300 Royal Palm Boulevard. It provides a safe and secure environment where online buyers and sellers can meet and conduct their transaction. So, if you are considering using Craigslist, eBay, Letgo, or other websites to purchase or sell items this holiday season, take advantage of this free service. Weston BSO is always working to protect residents and businesses. It asks that if you see any unusual activity, including people or vehicles, to please call 9-1-1 immediately.

ore than 100 million Americans traveled last holiday season, and experts believe the numbers could be even higher this year. That means many Weston homeowners may be away for the holidays. Whether your plans include skiing the slopes, relaxing on a Caribbean cruise, or visiting family and friends, you can rest a little easier knowing your home is under the careful watch of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Simply sign up for the free Home Watch program. While homeowners are away, a BSO deputy, community service aid, or C.O.P. (Citizens Observer Patrol) volunteer will drive by unoccupied residences and perform a daily perimeter check for signs of break-in or suspicious activity. To sign up for this free service, simply download the Home Watch form from the BSO website (www. sheriff.org/homewatch). Once you complete the form, return it to the BSO district office in Weston at 17300 Royal Palm Boulevard or fax it to 954-659-3541. Homeowners must provide the dates and times the home will be unoccupied, along with a contact phone number of a trusted neighbor or local relative. In addition to registering for the Home Watch program, homeowners can further protect their property while they are away by taking a few precautions. The Broward Sheriff’s Office recommends you: ▸▸ Let a trusted neighbor know when you will be out of town, and leave a spare key and an emergency telephone number;
▸▸ Make your home appear occupied by attaching timers to the lights and television sets and set them to turn on and off at different times; ▸▸ Open some of the drapes or blinds; during daytime hours this gives the appearance that someone is home, and during the evening, lights inside the house are more visible; ▸▸ Have your newspaper and mail held, or picked up by a friend or neighbor; ▸▸ Invite a neighbor to park their car in your driveway; ▸▸ Lock your garage door and disconnect the automatic opener; ▸▸ Don’t forget to set your alarm; ▸▸ And, never leave a message on your telephone answering machine stating you are out of town. To that last point, the American Automobile Association (AAA) adds “Don’t broadcast your trip regardless of how delighted you are about the vacation.” This means do not post that you will be away on social media sites. Another important tip from AAA is not to expose personal information on luggage tags, especially if you are departing from a local airport or cruise port. If possible, use your business address instead of home address or use tag covers. For those Weston residents who will be hosting guests this holiday season, BSO reminds you to park in the “cell phone” lot at the airport until your loved one’s flight arrives.

leveland Clinic Florida continues to make advances in cardiac care. It has appointed Roberto J. Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiology in the Heart & Vascular Institute. Dr. Cubeddu joined Cleveland Clinic Florida in 2015 as a Section Head of Structural Heart Disease and Director of the Multidisciplinary Valve Clinic. He was recently named Chairman of the Cardiology Department. In announcing the appointment, President of Cleveland Clinic Florida Wael Barsoum, MD, stated, “Dr. Cubeddu is a highly skilled interventional cardiologist and an accomplished administrator renowned for his commitment to excellence and for embracing treatment innovations to improve patient outcomes.” As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Cubeddu specializes in structural and adult congenital heart disease, with an emphasis on transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), mitral valve repair using the MitraClip, left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) with the WATCHMAN implant to reduce stroke risk due to atrial fibrillation, and paravalvular leak (PVL) closure. Weston Ironman’s Biggest Win was for the Children’s Tumor Foundation

W
eston resident Heath Eskalyo is a member of an elite class of athletes. He recently completed the 2017 Ironman Championship in Kona, Hawaii. In addition to finishing a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run, he raised more than $42,000 to help the Children’s Tumor Foundation find a cure for neurofibromatosis. This was not Eskalyo’s first Ironman. He’s previously completed the Florida Ironman, as well as several 70.3 Triathlon events. “To complete an Ironman means you are in an elite club. The Hawaii Ironman is a whole other level! It is like being in the Super Bowl,” he explains. Eskalyo acknowledges training for the Ironman Championship was no easy task, but he says Weston is an ideal location. “The city offers clean, smooth and wide bike lanes. The city even recently installed new traffic lights for cyclists. There are also great sidewalks for running and numerous parks and athletic facilities to swim and strength train.” Throughout his training Eskalyo was not alone. He was part of the Children’s Tumor Foundation’s NF Endurance Team. His team captain was eight-year-old Bella Paesano, who was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1). Bella and her family flew to Hawaii to cheer on Eskalyo as he competed in the Ironman race. “They were out on the race course giving me high fives,” shares Eskalyo, noting that Bella was there to greet him as he passed the finish line. He finished the 140.6 mile Heath Eskalyo with Team Captain Bella Paesano. race in 13 hours, 48 minutes and 1 second.
Eskalyo says Bella is the true hero. “Bella faces her diagnosis with resilience, courage and bravery every day. She was truly inspiring to me as my Team Captain and helped me surpass our fundraising goals. To be able to increase awareness and raise funds to fight such a terrible disease was an honor.” According to Eskalyo, the Children’s Tumor Foundation began as the first grassroot organization dedicated to finding treatments for neurofibromatosis (NF) and a model for innovative research endeavors. “As of right now, there is no cure for NF. The Children’s Tumor Foundation NF Endurance Team gives participants like me the opportunity to swim, bike and run – or all three – in endurance events across the country. Over the past three years, the NF Endurance Team has raised more than $4 million to help fund research.” Although the Ironman race may be over, Eskalyo says he plans to continue his involvement with the Children’s Tumor Foundation, as well as the other charities in which he is involved. He also intends to “eat all the foods I put on hold for the past year, and spend more time with family and friends, as the training schedule was insane!”
Gator Run Student Overcomes Obstacles BY STACEY BOMSER
C
arlos Fierro is a remarkable young man. Although born with Arthrogryposis, a disorder involving congenital joint contractures, the Gator Run fifth grader lets nothing stand in his way. Not only does he actively participate in P.E., but he also was a member of a travel soccer team. These amazing accomplishments are just some of the reasons Carlos was Gator Run’s nominee for the “Just Do It…I Did!” student awards program. “Just Do It…I Did!” is a district-wide celebration recognizing the accomplishments of students with disabilities in commemoration of Disability and History Awareness Weeks. Carlos was one of 166 students recognized for showing significant improvement and exemplary achievement. He was nominated by Jean Bailey and Diane Iscovitz, Gator Run’s Exceptional Student Education teachers. Mrs. Bailey says nominating Carlos was a unanimous decision. “He has an engaging personality and is described as respectful, kind, thoughtful and friendly. He has a positive attitude and does not let his limitations hold him back. Carlos faces each day with a smile and has a great sense of humor. He is viewed as a positive role model as he follows the classroom rules and is very well behaved.” In the nomination letter, Mrs. Bailey wrote that Carlos is an inspiration to all. “He ‘rolls with the punches’ and never complains. Carlos uses a roll-
ing walker with a seat or a wheelchair as needed since he is able to only walk for short distances due to weakness in his legs. However, he loves playing at recess and in P.E. He wants to be just like all the other students.” Mrs. Bailey also noted that Carlos faces many challenges throughout the school day, but one would never know because of his amazing disposition. “Carlos has difficulty with fine motor skills. He becomes fatigued while writing and has been provided a laptop and assistive technology to help him with his written assignments. He works hard to become more independent with his technology and continues to make academic gains.” In fact, Carlos is now fully mainstreamed in the general education classroom. “He inspires us as well as his classmates with his positive energy and his determination to be independent and excel both academically and socially,” notes Mrs. Bailey. “He has made great gains in all aspects of his life.” Carlos accepted his “Just Do It…I Did!” award with his parents, Carlos and Shantal Fierro, and grandfather, Jose Medina, proudly watching and cheering. “I felt honored and amazed,” shared Carlos when asked what it felt like to be recognized with this special award. “It’s an experience that will be with me for the rest of my life. I was excited to see my parents cheer for me.”

Book Tasting Gives Gator Run Third Graders a Sample of Literary Styles

hird graders at Gator Run Elementary School are voracious readers – gobbling up books of various writing styles. To foster their appetite, teachers Laura Rush, Roni O’Hara, Robin Yassen, Christi Grant and Victoria Perez hosted a “Book Tasting” event, introducing students to different literature genres. “Exposing students to different genres exposes them to different words, different kinds of images, text features, vocabulary and whole new worlds,” states Laura Rush, third grade gifted teacher, who credits teammate Roni O’Hara for finding the Book Tasting activity. “It also helps students become more effective writers. Reading different genres gives students a feel of how writing should be done and exposes them to many other writing styles.” During the Book Tasting, Mrs. Rush introduced her class to biography, mystery, historical fiction, poetry and non-fiction. Children went from table to table sampling books of each genre. After flipping through the books, she asked her students to write reflections on what they thought of the cover, perceptions after reading a few pages, what the author did to interest them in the book, and if they would read the book. “Before the start of the activity, in a class discussion, most students stated that they only liked one or two different genres or authors and gravitated toward them
when in the library or in a book store,” noted Mrs. Rush. “After the activity, there was lots of chatter among the students as to how they found different genres interesting and they began asking if they could borrow some of the books.” Not only did the Book Tasting expose students to different literature styles, it also broadened their thinking. “Reading different genres of literature encourages students to learn more about the world around them like people, lifestyles, and cultures that they might not interact with in their everyday life. It helps them become risk takers and try new things they may have never considered doing before,” added Mrs. Rush. Because the first Book Tasting was so successful, the Gator Run teachers plan to do more in the future to introduce students to science fiction, humor, fairy tales and other genres. The Book Tasting is not the only way Gator Run promotes literature. Students watch Swamp Stories on the WGRE morning news, view GRE Book Tips on YouTube, and utilize the GoodReads website.
Gator Run Fourth Graders Connect Through Global Read Aloud BY STACEY BOMSER
T
oday’s students are growing up in a global world. Through technology, children in different parts of the world are able to connect and collaborate, sharing their thoughts and feelings. That’s exactly what fourth graders at Gator Run Elementary did during the 2017 Global Read Aloud. Global Read Aloud is a worldwide initiative by teachers who read a common book to their students and then try to make as many global connections as possible. “It is so important in this day and age that students understand that there is a great, big world out there and for them to
interact with people who are different than they are,” explains Lynn Mitchel, a Gator Run fourth grade teacher. “It helps them to realize that although there may be differences, there are many similarities or commonalities.” Mrs. Mitchel, along with Mrs. Hernandez and Mrs. Sherman, read The Wild Robot by Peter Brown to their classes. The students then collaborated within the school and reached out globally, connecting with children around the world through different modes of communication.

“We used Mystery Skype to connect with a fourth-grade class in Bowmanville, Ontario, in Canada. We sent and received postcards from classes in all 50 states,” shared Mrs. Mitchel. “We also participated in Padlet discussions about the book with students around the world.” Padlet is an online virtual “bulletin” board, where students and teachers can collaborate, reflect, share links and pictures, in a secure location. Mystery Skype is an educational game in which students ask questions of each other to try to guess the location of the other classroom. Students learn about geography, culture, and the similarities and differences of how children live all over the world. Mrs. Mitchel’s class also utilized Flipgrid. It’s a popular video discussion platform used by teachers and students in more than 150 countries. It promotes discussion and builds dialogue as grids (classrooms or groups) share short videos. “Participating in Global Read Aloud not only instilled a love of reading in my students, but it also allowed them to understand that they are part of a world community and that they have the ability to connect with other students with similar interests all around the globe,” stated Mrs. Mitchel. She says Gator Run supports programs, such as Global Read Aloud, that prepare students to be global citizens and to make connections and differences in the world.

Indian Trace Elementary Earns Prestigious Florida Power-Library School Award SCHOOL NEWS

I
ndian Trace Elementary School has a model Media Center. In fact, it is often called the “hub of the school” as it houses not only an impressive book collection, but also the school’s award-winning MakerSpace and WABES studio. These were all factors in earning the school the Florida Power-Library School Award. Indian Trace Elementary is the first and only school in Broward County to achieve this recognition. “I am so humbled and honored to receive this award,” stated Media Specialist Dione Mila. “It is not one person who made this happen, but the collaboration of many stakeholders working together to make the Indian Trace Media Center the model in Broward County.” Earning the Florida Power-Library School Award was no easy task. Indian Trace had to complete a comprehensive evaluation process. “This award is quite prestigious as it is only given out if you receive a score of Outstanding,” asserts Mrs. Mila. “That means you must score Outstanding on all areas of the ExC3EL Evaluation Rubric. No school in Broward has ever won, even though they have tried.” The rubric measured multiple criteria and the school also had to undergo a site visit. Mrs. Mila had to provide evidence of participation in programs such as the school’s afterschool book clubs, the Sunshine State Young Readers Awards, the Read Across Broward program, and more. They also had to document how classroom teachers collaborate with the Media Specialist to integrate the READS standards into the curriculum. “We provided evidence showing my teaching the faculty on the latest curriculum developments and technologies,” added Mrs. Mila. Another element that earned Indian Trace points was its impressive collection. “It is not only up to date and improving all the time, but it provides resources to reflect the school’s social and cultural diversity, with materials provided in other languages,” explained Mrs. Mila.
The use of technology is another reason Indian Trace earned an Outstanding evaluation. “We are lucky to have not only several desktop computers, but we also have ten iPads that students use during MakerSpace and media instruction,” noted Mrs. Mila. “The visiting team that assessed our program was also impressed with our chalkboard tables, whitePrincipal Amy Winder and Media Specialist Dione Mila proudly display the banner Indian board student learning Trace Elementary received for earning the centers, rocking chairs, and Florida Power-Library School Award. various areas for learning and reading. They were impressed with our frugality and ability to implement all these changes and improvements using grants.” Another reason Indian Trace Elementary’s Media Center is so exceptional is because of the many innovative ways it promotes literacy. Just last month the school welcomed Gordon Korman, a New York Times best-selling author of more than 75 books for children and young adults. The school also hosted an annual school-wide Pumpkin Book Report project which brought the love of reading home to families. Its Night Animals project was an example of one of the many collaboration Project Based Learning units. According to Mrs. Mila, “Indian Trace Elementary embraces our media program through collaboration and support. We are all invested in our students’ success and work overtime to make that a positive reality for each student.”

Manatee Bay Students Share Messages of Hope with Hurricane Victims

F
or many students at Manatee Bay Elementary School, Hurricane Irma was their first experience in a natural disaster. While Weston made it through the storm relatively unharmed, the 2017 hurricane season devastated Caribbean islands including St. Thomas and Puerto Rico. Students in Ms. Washington’s and Mr. Allison’s fifth grade classes were shocked to learn that more than a month after Hurricane Maria, much of the island of Puerto Rico was still without power and so many homes and schools were destroyed that children were not able to attend class. Weston resident and former Manatee Bay Elementary parent Silvina Pico Abbiati approached the two teachers about getting their classes involved in the aid effort. She is involved with Activados por Puerto Rico, a private sector group providing help to those affected by the impacts of Hurricanes Irma and Maria throughout Puerto Rico. “I know Ms. Washington and Mr. Allison always stand up to help people in need and they also teach their students about the importance of helping each other,” shared Ms. Pico. She was invited to address the students and talk to them about Activados por Puerto Rico’s aid efforts. “I told them that the children there lost everything, they didn’t have houses anymore. Their schools are closed, some because they are damaged or because they don’t have power, so the children cannot study or see their friends.”

She added, “When I told the students that the children in Puerto Rico don’t have communication or Wi-Fi, they all exclaimed, ‘Oh no!’” After hearing Ms. Pico explain the dire situation facing their peers in Puerto Rico, the students in Ms. Washington’s and Mr. Allison’s classes wrote letters of encouragement in English and Spanish to be delivered to children living in hurricane shelters. “’You are Strong’ was the most simple and encouraging affirmation I read, but they also said, ‘We are thinking of you,’ ‘Help is on the way,’ and ‘Hope you feel better soon,’” shared Ms. Pico. She also invited students at Gator Run Elementary, where she has a fourth grader, to take part in the letter writing campaign. Her older child is a student at Falcon Cove Middle School, where the Latinos in Action Club sponsored a donation drive to collect items to send to Puerto Rico. Ms. Pico says it was inspiring to see the outpouring of support and compassion from the Weston students. “I believe that to build a good and healthy community we need to help each other and teach our kids the importance of being collaborative and that doing small actions to help others from your place of work, school or neighborhood is crucial.”

Imagine Charter School Celebrates Hispanic Heritage

ach year, Imagine Charter School at Weston celebrates Hispanic Heritage month, exploring the history and culture of Spanish-speaking countries around the world. Each grade chooses a different country or famous Hispanic to research. In addition, every bi-literate class per grade level chooses a country to study in depth, learning a song or dance to perform at the school-wide Hispanic Heritage Celebration, which culminates with students sampling authentic cuisine from the countries represented. “Second grade bi-literate chose the song Somos Amor, Somos el Mundo (We Are The World) due to the recent natural disasters,” explains teacher Marcela Sotomayor. “Students not only learned the words to this beautiful version in Spanish, but also learned about the history of the song. They learned that the original song was composed by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie to help the fight against hunger in Africa and the Spanish version was done by Gloria and Emilio Estefan to help the people from Haiti after the earthquake in 2010.” Before performing the song, the children explained its significance and
dedicated it to the hurricane victims in Florida, Houston, and Puerto Rico and the earthquake victims in Mexico. Mrs. Sotomayor says from this experience, her students learned that we need to be kind and have empathy, especially when there are so many people in need. As a whole, second grade chose to study Chile. “One reason being that it is not as popular as other countries who normally get represented at our school and in our community,” shares Mrs. Sotomayor. “Also, because I was born in Chile, I wanted to share with my students, peers and their students more about this amazing country that is barely mentioned because it is at the far end of South America.” Mrs. Sotomayor’s and Ms. Ventura’s bi-literate classes researched famous people from Chile such as Nobel Prize winner, poet, teacher and advocate for children Gabriela Mistral, two-time Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, and TV personality Don Francisco, among others. Ms. Romero’s gifted class researched Chile’s native animals and plants. Ms. Stern’s class researched the climate of the different regions of Chile during different seasons. Ms. Grau’s class learned about the traditional food, while Ms. Ford’s class learned about all the must-see tourist attractions in Chile. Each class created a poster, which was displayed in the second-grade hallway.

Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder Rolls with new Band Trailer

ith six different bands and ensembles, the Cypress Bay High School band department is always on the move, attending competitions all over the county and state, as well as participating in performances at various venues. To make this easier, the Cypress Bay Band Parents Association organized a fundraiser to purchase a trailer. “The sheer size of our program required us to have a trailer to be able to transport all of our uniforms, props, and instruments to and from competitions and performances,” explained Band Director Michael Scott. Last year, the Cypress Bay Band Parents Association (CBBPA) launched a massive fundraiser, collecting more than $2,300 with a CrowdRise campaign. In addition to the online fundraising, band supporters also organized carwashes and a cookie dough sale. “It took a village to make the trailer happen,” said CBBPA President Sara Schlorf. “The project became a reality thanks to the hardworking students and parents who not only relentlessly fundraised to benefit the program, but also worked building its interiors.” The CBBPA bought a used trailer and then customized the interior to meet the band’s needs. It features an elevated deck, custom shelving to hold instruments, and a dressing room. Assistant Band Director Jonathan Dor noted, “The trailer was absolutely essential to the Sound of Thunder’s operations, so we give a huge shout out to all the parents, students, and donors who helped make it a possibility.”

Although the Sound of Thunder has secured its trailer, the fundraising continues. “As boosters, CBBPA continues raising funds to support the band program in all its needs,” shares Schlorf. “The band travels across the state and to other states to participate in competition. Every participation is an invaluable learning experience for the students.” Just last month the Sound of Thunder competed in the Florida Marching Band Championships in Tampa. In addition to traveling to band competitions, Cypress Bay also hosts events. According to Mr. Scott, “In March 2018 we are going to host, for the first time, the Music Performance Assessment by the Florida Bandmasters Association, with 30 bands from the south end of Broward County. Last year, we hosted our first Indoor Percussion and Winds competition, hosting nearly 1,400 performers and spectators. It was a great experience and an honor for our program.” The Cypress Bay band department is comprised of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, and Sound of Thunder Marching Band. The Cypress Bay Band presents a holiday concert on December 14th and 15th in the Cypress Bay auditorium. “We invite the Weston community to participate and have the chance to see the amazing job our kids are doing,” says Mr. Scott. Country Isles Students Read for the Record

P
re-kindergarten and Kindergarten students at Country Isles Elementary School enjoyed a special storytime session on Read for the Record Day. BSO School Resource Officer Deputy Mark Skolnick, along with Country Isles’ administrators, including Principal Mindy Morgan, and school staff, read Liz Wong’s Quackers to the children. It’s a charming story about a kitten who grows up believing he’s a duck, until the days he meets another kitten. The Dual Language classes enjoyed the story read in Spanish as well. “Reading aloud to children through Read for the Record Day supports a Balanced Literacy approach to reading instruction,” explains Literacy Coach Barbara McDermott. “Teachers and guest readers engaged children in meaningful discussions about the text, involving logical and critical thinking.” As a follow-up to the read aloud experience, the students completed a Bubble Map, brainstorming words to describe Quackers, the main character in the story. A Bubble Map is a graphic organizer that supports students’ abilities to identify qualities and use descriptive words. Each of the Pre-K and Kindergarten students was given a copy of Quackers to take home. This was funded through a partnership between Broward County
Public Schools, the Children’s Services Council and other sponsors. “They couldn’t wait to go home and share this wonderful story with their family!” stated Ms. McDermott. “With a personal copy of the book, children are able to interact and demonstrate involvement with printed material. This encourages students to be motivated to read regularly.” While the youngest students were enjoying the read aloud sessions on Read for the Record Day, school-wide students participated in DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. It was a literacy experience enjoyed by all. According to Ms. McDermott participating in Read for the Record Day is just one of many ways Country Isles Elementary helps make students lifelong readers. “Family Night Book Fairs, Summer Reading Challenge, Accelerated Reader, and Book Character dress up, as well as ongoing professional development to foster best practices in reading, are just some of the many ways we promote literacy at Country Isles.”
Manatee Bay Kindergarten Students Skype with Quackers Author BY STACEY BOMSER
I
n addition to enjoying a reading of Liz Wong’s Quackers on Read for the Record Day, kindergarten students at Manatee Bay Elementary School got the chance to talk to the author via Skype. The Read for the Record campaign was created to highlight the importance of early literacy, and inspire a love of reading from an early age. More than twomillion people take part in the event each year, which involves reading a children’s book to prekindergarten and kindergarten students. This year’s selection, Quackers, is a beautiful story about understanding, acceptance, and learning that it is okay to be whoever you want to be. “The book has such an adorQuackers Author Liz Wong read her story able message that really fits with to kindergarten students via Skype. our school theme for this year – Free to be you and me at MBE,” shares Manatee Bay Literacy Coach Tonia Wood. “I looked up the author, emailed her and she immediately agreed to Skype with us.” Liz Wong held three Skype sessions to reach all eight kindergarten classes. She began each by reading Quackers to the students. “The kids were excited and completely engrossed as she was reading the book,” shares Ms. Wood. “Her storytelling voice was precious and perfect for the mood and tone of the book.” Afterwards, Wong explained how she drew the characters Quackers and Mittens. “She even showed the students some secrets about the book,” noted Ms. Wood. “One was the hidden picture on each page that leads to what happens on the next page.” The author/illustrator then invited the children to ask questions. When asked how she got so good at drawing, Wong explained that it takes lots and lots of

practice. She shared with students that to get good at anything you need to practice. The Skype session ended with the children waving goodbye, thanking her for sharing her book with them, and then giving her some ideas for possible new books and characters.

“It seems several of them would love for her to write a book next time about dragons,” noted Ms. Wood. Language class on Read for the Record Day. “Knowing why an author chose a certain color for a character such as for Quackers helps the students to connect with the book. It also helps bring the characters to life.” Ms. Wood says it is easier for students to relate to stories and learn from them when they get personal with the book. “Hearing how Wong talked about ‘her’ Quackers made him seem so real to all of us. The theme/moral of the story becomes more evident when the characters are relatable.”

Giving our time is a unique present: no one else can provide it. Sharing our time is what our children crave. They need time to sit with their parents and talk about their day. They need time to bond with their siblings. Traditions help enforce time together. These events help our children feel loved and secure. The good part about setting some family traditions is they don’t have to cost anything. I realized when my daughter when off to college how much she missed our family traditions. Occasional trips to the mall and eating lunch at our favorite restaurant means the world to her. She likes it when I buy her something that she needs, but it’s our time together, talking in the car and chatting over a cup of coffee, that mean the most to her. Family trips to visit grandparents – usually long car drives – are some of our favorite memories. When my daughter was little, her special time was with her dad, the coach, on the soccer field. And those special days of playing Uno together during Hurricane Wilma: they will never be forgotten. What about the holiday meals shared with family and friends? How can more presents compare with those precious memories and traditions? We’ve all said that life “goes way too fast”. As a parent of three I can tell you that statement is so true. Remember, that when your children are grown they may not remember the electronic game they received for the holidays but they will rember those days of baking with mom in the kitchen or the weekly Sunday dinner at Grandma’s house. ou are accompanying your child for their regularly scheduled visit to the dentist and you hear those dreaded words “your child has a cavity.” Initial emotions usually consist of anger. You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird, and Monsters Inc); the toothpaste is bubble gum flavored; and the drawer contains 300 dinosaur floss handles, a water irrigation system and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care. After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So, what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then it dawns on you. It is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth, aka “baby” teeth, have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion - chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance? The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and, in most cases, save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients, as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just as important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits which will reward them into their adulthood.

Overweight and Increased Cancer Risk? DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP
O
n a daily basis, I have conversations with my patients about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight. In most cases, I am instructing them on the need to lose weight. It is not that excess body fat or being little overweight looks ugly, but it’s the implications and consequences that obesity causes is a huge concern. The problem is this excess fat in your body has a brain of its own and unfortunately it is not in your favor. Let me tell you why. Fat in itself can produce inflammatory chemicals, unwanted hormones, and renders itself a great place to store toxins which can contribute to cancer. It is no surprise that there have been several studies revealing that approximately 40% of cancer cases are linked to obese patients. By the way, obesity is defined as a BMI (body mass index) of 30 and above. For most people, a BMI of 30 mean being approximately 30 pounds overweight. A study from the American Cancer Society suggest that being obese or overweight was associated with cancer cases involving more than 630,000 Americans in 2014, and this includes 13 types of cancer. These cancers include: brain cancer, multiple myeloma, cancer of the esophagus, postmenopausal breast cancer, cancers of the thyroid, gallbladder, stomach, liver, pancreas, kidney, ovaries, uterus and colon. Moreover, to add to that statistic, in 2013-2014 about two out of three American adults were overweight or obese. Of the documented cancers in those years, 55 % of women and 24 % of men were associated with being overweight or obese.

Everglades Elementary School Starts Robotics Club BY STACEY BOMSER
Robotics Club provides a unique opportunity for interested students to actively learn about robotics. Ms. Martin says she has about 18 students who consistently attend Robotics Club and another five who visit frequently. “Vex Robotics encourages explorative STEM learning; therefore, our students explore the robot and share ideas to find ways to improve the function of the clawbot and maximize the robot’s abilities. This includes perfecting the pickup and delivery process for accuracy on the field,” explains Ms. Martin. “The students are also responsible for collaborative planning, programming and building a competitive field from scratch.” Ms. Martin says she is thrilled with the interest in Robotics Club, as it’s important to engage young students in STEM activities. “First, STEM pervades every aspect of our daily lives. It provides hands-on and mind-boggling experiences for students engaging in problem-solving scenarios. It also allows students to explore their own questions and concerns in risktaking environments – places where there is no right or wrong.” In addition to the upcoming competition at Plantation Middle School, members of Everglades Elementary School’s Robotics Club will also participate in the Cypress Bay Zone “Elementary Showcase.”

embers of the Robotics Club at Everglades Elementary School are busy preparing for their first competition, which takes place next month at Plantation Middle School. This is the club’s inaugural year and advisor Marcia Martin, who is also the school’s Science Special teacher, says this group of fourth and fifth grade students is highly committed, meeting at least four days a week. Ms. Martin says students are exposed to robotics through Broward Schools’ partnership with VEX Robotics as part of the district’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education curriculum. “At Everglades, we seized the opportunity to use VEX and the Robotics Club as another way to promote STEM education within our school.” As part of specials time, Ms. Martin tries to introduce students to robots, but acknowledges the time is too short to adequately engage an entire class in robotics. “I have introduced the robot to many grade levels and engaged in active discussions on the history of robots, and the many ways in which they may be used in society.”

cience students at Falcon Cove Middle School are hard at work preparing for the 2018 eCYBERMISSION competition. For the past two years, the school has competed in the national finals. And for the past two years, that team has been comprised of four promising female scientists: Emily Lu, Eunice Baek, Oluwagbemisola Awonusonu and Sionika Thayagabalu. Team Ozonators are now all ninth graders attending Cypress Bay High School or American Heritage School. eCYBERMISSION is a web-based science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program sponsored by the U.S. Army and administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NTSA). It is designed to cultivate an interest in STEM subjects by encouraging students in grades six through nine to develop solutions to real-world problems in their communities. Projects focus on one of seven mission challenges: alternative energy sources; environment; food, health and fitness; forces and motion; national security and safety; robotics; and technology. Team Ozonators focused their project on the environment. According to Jessica Velez, eighth grade science teacher and team advisor, the girls wanted to use an everyday item to reduce ground level ozone in
the atmosphere. “They contacted a chemist and based on the informa-

Gator Run Hosts Broward Schools’ Parent Food Show

chool meals have changed a lot over the years. Gone are the days of greasy fried chicken and cardboard pizza. Today’s students are dining on delicious and nutritious dishes such as black beans with brown rice and salsa, chicken patty on a whole grain bun, and fish nuggets. Parents were invited to taste some of the featured menu items at Broward County Public Schools’ annual Parent Food Show, which took place at Gator Run Elementary School. Attendees were able to visit different stations set up around the cafeteria, sampling various food offerings. District Food and Nutrition Services administrators were on hand to explain each item and its nutritional benefits, as well as answer questions. One thing parents noticed was the selection of menu offerings reflecting the cultural diversity in Broward County schools. Students can dine on empanadas, Cuban sandwiches, Jamaican beef patties, edamame and hummus.
“Our Parent Food Show afforded parents a wonderful opportunity to sample and provide feedback on some of our current menu items, including various vegetarian dishes,” said Darlene Moppert, MS, RD, program manager and licensed nutritionist with BCPS Food & Nutrition Services. Parents were also treated to a cooking demonstration by celebrity chef Rudy Poindexter, from the Food Network’s Chopped. He prepared Asian kale chicken salad while explaining to the audience the importance of supplying students with healthy menu options that are also appealing. Chef Poindexter emphasized his “try it once” rule, explaining that children need to try everything at least one time to experience various types of foods and work a healthy and diverse diet into their daily routines. He also shared the tip that food needs to look enticing for students to want to try it. As part of its “Power Up!” campaign, Broward

County Schools Food and Nutrition Services encourages students to power up with healthy and nutritious meals during the school day. It promotes a diet full of fresh items, healthy food, and plenty of options. Broward Schools use farm-to-school fruits and vegetables whenever possible. The USDA regulates what is served in schools, mandating the offering of appropriate servings of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, low fat milks and high-quality proteins. Broward Schools’ registered dieticians review the nutritional statistics for new recipes and products served. The District serves nearly 150,000 school lunches each day.
Tequesta Trace Middle School Takes Titles in Two New Sports BY STACEY BOMSER
B
roward County Public Schools added two new sports this season for middle school athletics, and Tequesta Trace Middle School has dominated in both. It clinched County Championships in cross country and golf. The Tequesta Trace Middle School boys cross country team took first place at the county meet, led by Francisco Alvarez who finished 11th overall and David Perez. The girls team finished in fifth place, led by Kayla Dinda, who finished sixth overall. That’s quite an impressive record considering countywide there were 20 boys teams and 16 girls teams competing. The school’s inaugural golf season was equally successful with the girls golf team claiming the County Championship. The Lady Cougars were led by Maria Gabriela Sierra, who tied for the lowest individual score, as well as Rileigh Baker. The boys team finished as the County runnerup, led by Mateo Gray, Tommy Lewis and Cameron Carlton. Thirty-one schools introduced golf this season with 188 golfers competing in the First Annual Don Cifra Invitational Golf Tournament. With the addition of the new sports programs, middle school students are now able to compete in seven sports. Tequesta Trace Middle School Athletic Director Howie Schrager says the cross country and golf programs were added to get

more students involved in athletics. “Our athletic program has experienced a great deal of success thanks to our coaches who work very hard and our student athletes who dedicate time for practices and games,” acknowledges Coach Schrager. He credits their hard work and dedication for the school’s numerous awards. “Our soccer teams have always had tremendous success. Our girls team has not lost a regular season game in two years. They advanced to the semi-finals last year and the finals this year. The girls won the County Championship while the boys soccer team finished in second place.”
Coach Schrager says he would like to see more students get involved in athletics. “Being a part of a team is good for so many reasons. The pride in a student’s face when they are wearing a jersey with their school name on it is priceless. Sports is also invaluable because it teaches children how to work together for a common goal and how to be a good teammate.”

itness means very different things to different people. Our notions of being fit range from daily walking, to gardening, to working each day at a manual job or playing golf twice a week. For some, being fit means nothing less than marathon running and triathlons. No matter how fit we perceive ourselves to be, one weakness common to most all of us is back fitness. What is back fitness? A fit back requires balance between these five key components: Strength - particularly the muscles of your lower back and abdomen. These “core” muscle groups are notoriously weak and make us especially vulnerable to back strains. Endurance - again, the back extensor and abdominal muscles need the most attention. Studies have shown that these muscles are some of the weakest and most easily fatigued in the body, and can show the most significant gains in strength and endurance when exercised properly. Flexibility - particularly important is hip flexor and hamstring muscle length, as well as various muscle groups of the lower back. There are many good books on stretching, or ask your chiropractor for exercises specific to your needs. Posture - one can have good back strength, endurance and flexibility but still be lacking back fitness because of poor structural alignment. Correct posture is critical to having a fit, healthy back. Spinal discs, joints, muscles and ligaments can only function correctly if posture is normal. Your chiropractor can show you specific exercises to improve your posture.

Arthroscopy of the Foot and Ankle
F
oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on in life. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time, usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle.

A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery can be used to treat the following conditions: chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. Its advantages include faster recovery, less pain and swelling, avoids large incisions, low risk of infection, can be done as an outpatient procedure, and allows a quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition, however, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. Carlo A. hey will be forever known as the purplish red marks that made millions of people wonder and search on the internet when they watched Michael Phelps debut at the 2016 Summer Olympics. While it may have looked like several Olympians with the same type of skin marks had been attacked by an octopus, the circles on their body are signs of “cupping”. A few years ago, Denver Broncos player DeMarcus Ware posted a photo on Instagram showing his back covered with 19 clear cups as a therapist placed them on his skin. Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow have also been photographed with cupping marks on their skin. Cupping is trendy now, but it goes back much further than even the Olympics, as far as 3000 B.C. Cupping dates to ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the oldest textbooks in the world, The Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1550 B.C. Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which Acupuncture physicians put special cups on the skin that create suction. Athletes get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, soreness, inflammation, blood flow, as well as relaxation and wellbeing. A more modern version of cupping uses a rubber, plastic or silicone pump instead of fire to create the vacuum inside the cup. This causes the skin to rise and redden as the blood vessels expand. The cups can be left for several minutes. Cupping brings blood to areas that it doesn’t normally reach by sucking skin into a cup, which releases connective tissue underneath the skin that wraps around your muscles. Besides this, cupping therapy seems to provoke a relaxation response in some people, which means it’s useful for lowering stress and its negative effects. Why would you consider doing cupping? Cupping provides pain relief. It also alleviates cold, cough and allergy symptoms. In addition, cupping promotes relaxation, detoxifies the body, heals injuries faster by inducing inflammation, improves skin related conditions, relieves digestive problems like IBS, provides anti-aging effects, and can treat carpal tunnel syndrome. Wondering if cupping really works? A 2012 report published in the journal PLos ONE reviewed 135 studies on cupping published between 1992 and 2010. Researchers concluded that cupping has benefits similar to acupuncture or herbal medicine for treating various digestive, skin, hormonal and inflammatory diseases. Cupping might sound a little scary to someone that has never done it, but rest assured that cupping isn’t usually painful and most trained practitioners are very careful to use sterile equipment. One of the biggest advantages to trying alternative practices like cupping therapy, acupuncture and massage therapy is that these methods don’t pose the risk for unwanted side effects like pharmacological drugs or surgery do. he next time you’re on the putting green, try these simple practice drills that will help you become a better putter: 1. Place a golf ball about five to six feet from the hole, then put two tees in the ground, approximately eight to ten inches behind the ball. Place them a little farther apart than the length of your putter head. Make sure they are directly on the target line you intend to putt the ball. This drill is intended to have you swing the putter straight back away from the ball. If you strike either tee on your back stroke, your backswing path is offline. When you can swing the putter head back and forth between the tees, you will know that the putter is moving along the correct path, ensuring Dean Sklar, PGA you will make solid contact every time. This path is vital, because it helps start your ball on its intended target line. 2. Next, I encourage golfers to hold the finish of their putting stroke until they hear the ball falling into the hole. This drill is effective in training your head and body to stay still over a putt while also helping you maintain the putter face on line throughout your stroke. Finally, your focus on the followthrough will keep your mind off missing the putt. As I watch golfers struggle with putting, I notice many have trouble with distance control. This problem relates to feel. 3. A good drill to increase feel and improve your distance control is to practice putting with one hand. Start by placing the ball eight to ten feet from the cup, and hit a few putts with just your right hand. Next, repeat the putt just using your left hand. By now you should notice which hand gives you better control of the putter. From then on, practice your one-hand drill mostly with the dominate hand. 4. Another great tip is a drill I learned from an instructor I had as a junior golfer at a golf camp. He told me that whenever he lines up for a putt and addresses the ball he looks at the hole and makes about two or three practice strokes just staring at the hole only and not the ball. This allows him to feel the distance, so when you get up to make your actual stroke you now have a good idea how far the distance is to the hole without walking up to address the ball without feel. It really works and I have been applying this method of feeling the distance for decades. You will not be knocking the ball past the hole as in the past and as if you had a few practice putts at the hole. This drill will have you feel much more comfortable and confident over putts, improving your distance control, thus giving you a more confident stroke. It’s always a great idea to practice these tips prior to teeing off if you have time or try and split up your time on the driving range and mix in a few of these drills.

How to Manage Vision Changes, Post-LASIK ASK THE EXPERT

ptometrists often hear post-LASIK patients say their surgery “isn’t working anymore” or it has “expired”. While the corneal tissue that was ablated is gone forever, eyes can change over time, and laser vision correction does not stop time. There are many reasons why eyes change after laser vision correction. The vast majority of Lasik patients have stable distance vision. A study published in Journal of Refractive Surgery analyzing 4,937 eyes indicates 90.6 percent of patients still see 20/20 binocularly five years after surgery. In the early days of laser vision correction, up to ten percent of patients needed additional surgery after the initial healing period. Currently, the percentage of patients who need an enhancement procedure within the first year after surgery can be as low as 1.4 percent.
Myopic patients
A variety of refractive combinations can be seen after LASIK, but the most common are myopic patients getting more myopic and hyperopic patients getting more hyperopic. A very small group of patients are presented with increasing astigmatism. Younger myopic patients can become more myopic with age. Treating myopic patients’ residual myopia is usually straightforward. It is important to use corneal tomography, such as Oculus Pentacam, to assure corneal stability and thickness. Most surgeons perform photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) over the existing LASIK flap rather than lift the flap. This greatly reduces the risk of an epithelial ingrowth. Patients who are in their 50s and become more myopic often have lenticular changes even though they still correct to 20/20. A referral to the operating surgeon for corneal tomography can be very informative.

Results of hyperopic LASIK reveals fewer patients achieve 20/20 vision without correction, but these patients can still be some of the happiest. When hyperopic patients become more hyperopic, it can be the result of several factors, including decreased accommodation and increased hyperopia and/ or epithelial hyperplasia. The corneal epithelium does a good job of filling in any irregularity on the corneal surface, and in this case, it works against our laser vision correction treatments for hyperopic patients. Hyperopic LASIK removes a trough of tissue in the mid-periphery of the corneal stroma, resulting in the central cornea becoming relatively steeper. In hyperopic PRK, epithelial cells fill-in this trough, which negates the effect of the treatment. This also happens in hyperopic LASIK, albeit to a lesser extent. Treatment options for these patients include clear lens extraction, glasses, and contact lenses.
Astigmatism
It is unusual to see an increase in corneal astigmatism after laser vision correction. Similar to myopic patients, a patient who has significant withthe-rule astigmatism prior to surgery can develop with-the-rule astigmatism after surgery. Oblique astigmatism cases are more worrisome. On rare occasions, increasing astigmatism is the first indicator for corneal ectasia. While an increase in with-the-rule astigmatism is often treatable with an enhancement procedure, investigate first with corneal tomography for corneal stability. This test is sensitive for corneas that are developing ectasia. Testing is more important today because we can treat corneal ectasia early with corneal crosslinking (CXL) to reduce or prevent the devastating effects of vision ectasia. Most patients who return to the office years after laser vision correction still enjoy wonderful distance vision from this procedure. Nevertheless, eyes change over time for various reasons, and it is important to understand why the refractive status is changing and how to best manage that refractive change. Most people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 35 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December and, as such, last minute issues usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement and/ or Parenting Plan. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any timesharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in odd numbered years, such as 2015, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. T
oo much of a good thing is not always the best. Moderation in life results in the ideal balance in many facets of our lives. This holds true for cosmetic surgery as well. From noninvasive treatments to plastic surgery procedures, moderation is the approach I feel yields the best long-term aesthetic results. We have all seen it – from celebrities to people in our local community - the “overdone” “overfilled” or excessively pulled face that resembles an aquatic animal or alien life form more than a natural aesthetic enhanced face or body. The most common mistake is the over injected face and mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles, the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless mask-like face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants and oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend to any individual who is considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure to consult with a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) organization such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery with documented experience prior to proceeding. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. hile a puppy can tug at anyone’s heartstrings, choosing a puppy should be more than an emotional decision. All too often, the cute and cuddly puppy that is purchased on impulse is relinquished to a shelter because it grew up to be a large, rambunctious dog. That’s why it pays to do your homework before you even look at a puppy. Start by researching the kind of adult dog that will be most compatible with your lifestyle. A book on dog breeds is a good starting place, but also ask veterinarians for their suggestions. They are very familiar with the different dog breeds and suitability for each home. You can also visit dog shows to see many different breeds at once and talk with dog breeders and trainers. Consider the size of the adult dog and how it would fit into your household. Would you prefer a lap dog or do you have room for a large dog? Research the exercise and grooming requirements of different breeds. Some breeds, such as herding dogs, require more exercise and may be best suited for someone who is looking for a jogging partner. Other breeds need regular grooming, so you will need to plan for those expenses. Some breeds may be predisposed to certain health conditions. In some cases, you may ask the breeder to test for the condition, if possible, or provide a written guarantee should the condition occur. Mixed-breed dogs may be less likely to have certain health conditions than purebred dogs.
How Do I Check a Puppy’s Physical Health?
Most breeders and some shelters will provide you with paperwork that the puppy has been examined by a veterinarian, has been checked/treated for parasites, and has received at least the first round of vaccines. Many breeders may also provide you with a health guarantee. A healthy puppy should appear alert and energetic, not lethargic (tired); be well fed, with a little fat covering the ribcage; have a good coat, without dry, flaky skin or bald patches; walk and run normally, without limping; have no discharge from the eyes, nose, or ears; follow a tossed toy with its eyes; not cough, sneeze, or appear to have difficulty breathing; and turn to look at you when you clap or make a noise behind it. Puppies should be comfortable when handled. Try holding the puppy and touching the ears, mouth, and paws. If the puppy becomes aggressive or struggles to get away, it might not be the kind of dog who will snuggle with you on the couch or allow you to trim its nails. Choosing a healthy puppy with a good disposition will increase your chances of raising a dog that will be a great fit for your household and your best friend for years to come!
Where Should I Look for a Puppy?
If you prefer a purebred dog, ask veterinarians and breed clubs for advice on how to locate a reputable breeder. You’ll want to interview several breeders and ask to see the puppy’s parents and the breeding facility, if possible. It is important to visit the facility to ensure that a limited number of puppies are raised in a sanitary, well-socialized environment. Harvest Drive Founder Renee Herman accepted a proclamation from Mayor Daniel Stermer recognizing the 25th anniversary of the Harvest Drive. The Weston Area Toastmasters celebrated Tony Vivaldi’s 100th original speech. Tony has been a member since 2005 and is the group’s longest-standing member. He has reached Toastmasters’ highest level, Distinguished Toastmaster.
