We Are All In This Together

I

n the span of just six days, eleven people were murdered at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a man murdered two black shoppers at a grocery store outside of Louisville, Kentucky, and a local man mailed more than a dozen pipe bombs to prominent critics of the President. In summary, it was a horrible week for our country that was driven, in part, by division and hatred. Shortly after the horrible events in Pittsburgh however, Tarek El-Messidi, a founder of the Muslim group Celebrate Mercy, set up a fundraising initiative in partnership with another Muslim group called MPower Change on behalf of the Tree of Life victims. Their goal was to raise $25,000 to help the Jewish families impacted by the assault. In a matter of days, they had raised more than $250,000, mostly from Muslim donors. Perhaps as important as the financial aid is the message they sent: we are all in this together. El-Messidi emphasized his motivation to help was driven by a sense of shared humanity, “We are here for you, if you need anything at all. If you need food for the families, if you just need someone to come to the grocery store because you don’t feel safe, we will be there for you.” In this time of extreme division, we can all learn from the example of the actions of these thoughtful, generous people. When we sit down with our families this holiday season, regardless of whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas or nothing at all, we must all remember that we are in this together, not against each other. Sincerely,

Turnstiles – The Ultimate Tribute to the Music of Billy Joel will take the stage at Weston Regional Park on Saturday, December 15th. Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation, says he chose the band Turnstiles because it appeals to a wide audience. “We have had some luck with tribute bands in the past, most recently with a tribute to Tom Petty last season. Rotary Run for Tomorrow Raises Funds and Fitness BY STACEY BOMSER

S

unday, December 9th is a day of health and wellness here in Weston. The 21st annual Rotary Club of Weston Run for Tomorrow is the community’s largest sanctioned run and the Rotary Club’s primary charity fundraiser. The event features a 5K and Half Marathon, along with the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge 1-Mile Family Health Walk, followed by the Fitness and Health Festival. More than 2,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in this year’s Run For Tomorrow. In its 21-year history, this event has generated more than $1 million for local charities, non-profit organizations, and The Rotary Foundation. Harvest Drive, HOPE Outreach, LifeNet4Families, Sandy Nininger Jr. State Veterans’ Nursing Home, and the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center are just some of the local beneficiaries. The Rotary Club is also a supporter of Weston schools. Each year it partners with the City of Weston to present the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge. Students, families and faculty from all Weston elementary schools are encouraged to participate in the 1-Mile Family Health Walk. The

school with the largest number of participants, as a percentage of enrollment, will take home the coveted Commission Cup trophy. Imagine Charter School at Weston has held the title for the past seven years. In addition, the top three schools will each receive a cash prize: $4000 for first place, $2000 for second place and $1000 for third place. Last year’s race saw record-setting participation, with all seven elementary schools represented and a total of 2,800 walkers, including more than 600 students. Mayor Daniel Stermer says he’s hoping for an even bigger turn out this year. “The Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge Cup has become one of my favorite events of the year,” states Mayor Stermer. “It represents an initiative to begin healthy habits early in life. Weston

was once again recognized by the Florida Department of Health as a Healthy Weight Community Champion, and this walk is just one of the many reasons why. It is a win-win situation for all. Fitness, fun and financial rewards!” Runners, walkers and the entire Weston community are invited to attend the Fun and Health Festival, which takes place from 9am to 1pm. More than 100 exhibitors will be on hand promoting health and wellness products and services. Activities include live music, stage performances, obstacle courses and fitness competitions, food trucks, and more. A Children’s Fun Zone will feature face painting, bounce houses, balloon twisters and the chance to paint a fire truck. The Rotary Club of Weston’s Run for Tomorrow takes place at Cypress Bay High School on Sunday, December 9th. The half marathon starts at 6:20am sharp, followed by the 5K at 7:30am sharp. The 1-Mile Family Health Walk begins at 9am. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital returns as the title sponsor. Weston Ranks As One of Florida’s Safest Cities

Y IN F

BY STACEY BOMSER

T

wo recent surveys have ranked Weston as one of the safest cities in Florida in which to live. These accolades come on the heels of Money magazine’s ranking of Weston as #21 on its list of the Best Places to Live in America. The Home Security Advisor ranked Weston as #2 on its list of the Safest Cities in Florida. To determine its rankings the review website analyzed the most recent (2016) FBI Uniform Crime Report figures for cities with a population of 5,000 or more, who reported their crime statistics. It considered both “Violent” (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery) and “Property Crimes” (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft). With a population of 70,882, Weston had a reported 36 violent crimes and 343 property crimes. Captain Kevin Butler, Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District Chief, says he is happy to hear that Weston was ranked so highly by the Home Security Advisor. “The Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District and Sheriff Israel are just one spoke in the wheel that makes living in Weston a special place. The City of Weston, the community home owner associations, Fire Department, religious institutions, local schools and businesses all contribute to the success and accolades of being named the second safest city in the State of Florida. The security of our residents and guests is paramount to our public safety

mission. It is a great honor to be recognized by the Home Security Advisor. We will continue to strive to reduce crime in our City.” Weston ranked at the top of HomeSnacks’ Ten Safest Cities in Florida for 2019 list. HomeSnacks combines data from the census, FBI, OpenStreetMaps, and other sources into bite-sized studies to help people understand what it’s like to live in different communities across the country. To come up with its Safe Cities list, HomeSnacks analyzed 205 cities in Florida with a population of more than 5,000 using the latest FBI data. Weston ranked #1. According to HomeSnacks, “Weston ranks as the safest city in Florida for 2019 based on a best in class ranking for property crime in the state. There were a total of 497 crimes committed in Weston which had a reported population of 70,796. That means the number of crimes per capita is 0.007 which translates into a 1 in 142 chance of being the victim of a crime.” In a separate study, HomeSnacks ranked Weston as the #7 Best City in Florida to raise a family. To determine the most family friendly cities, researchers analyzed U.S. Census data paying particular attention to crime (both violent and property), quality of local schools, distance to a major city, percentage of households with children, and number of nearby familyfriendly amenities such as museums, libraries and colleges.

Free BSO Programs Help Keep Community Safe BY STACEY BOMSER

O

ne of the reason’s Weston is continuously named one of the safest cities in which to live is because of its low crime rate. We are fortunate that the Broward Sheriff’s Office offers several programs to help protect residents from personal property and identity theft. Hundreds of cars lined up for the recent BSO ShredA-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet at the Weston Police Services Center. This year’s event drew 386 vehicles in a three-hour period. Shred-A-Thon helps reduce crime by shredding sensitive documents as a pro-active step to reduce the risk of identity theft. Participants can safely destroy personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain sensitive data. Operation Medicine Cabinet provides residents with the opportunity to safely dispose of unused, unwanted

medications were safely disposed of during Operation Medicine Cabinet. In addition, residents helped prevent identity theft by shredding 21,460 pounds of documents. To further help protect residents against crime, the BSO Weston District Office serves as a Safe Transaction Zone. Because not everyone selling or buying items online is legitimate, individuals conducting an exchange from an online agreement, such as Craigslist, can now do so in the safety of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The premise is that conducting business in a safe environment will deter sellers from ripping off potential customers and potential customers from stealing from sellers. Buyers and sellers can meet in the parking lot of the Weston Police Services Center at 17300 Royal Palm Boulevard. For more information on crime prevention programs available in Weston visit www.westonfl.org/government/police-services/ crime-prevention-programs.

or expired medications. BSO encourages participation in this program rather than throwing out or flushing medications because if prescription medication gets into the water system, it can be bad for the environment. Another benefit to Operation Medicine Cabinet is that it reduces incidents of theft. Prescription drug abuse is on the rise, especially among teens because prescription drugs are easier to get than illegal drugs. For many, it’s as easy as opening the medicine cabinet. According to the DEA’s 2015 Prescription for Disaster: How Teens Abuse Medicine guide for parents, “17.8% of high school students took a prescription drug without a doctor’s prescription once or more in the past year.” Programs such as Operation Medicine Cabinet, with its no questions asked policy, are proving successful in keeping prescription drugs off the streets and out of the hands of children. According to Weston BSO, 296.6 pounds of uncontrolled medications and 11.6 pounds of controlled

Weston Recognized for Excellence in Financial Reporting BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or the 20th consecutive year, the City of Weston has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The city was recognized for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the Fiscal Year ending September 30, 2017. This prestigious award, presented by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada, is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. To consistently earn the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the past two decades represents a significant accomplishment by the Weston Finance Department. “This recognition is made possible by the dedicated professionalism of our Accounting Manager, Cindy Tao, and her staff, and by our Chief Financial Officer, Darrel Thomas,” states Weston City Manager John Flint. “The recognition independently validates the quality of the City’s financial reporting and should give the City’s residents confidence that their tax dollars are properly accounted for to the highest scrutiny.” The GFOA established the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program in 1945 to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles, to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure, and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal. Weston’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the highest standards of the program including

Weston University Program Commences with Trip to City Hall BY STACEY BOMSER

The first session began with an overview by City Manager John Flint. He talked to students about Weston’s status as a premier municipality and its award-winning operations. Next, City Attorney Jamie Alan Cole provided an education on ethics and legal perspectives. The class also included a session with Mayor Daniel Stermer, who spoke to students about politics, their future and his personal passion and commitment to our community. The day concluded with a tour of City Hall and the City’s Administrative Services building. The monthly Weston University program days consist of instruction, conversations, observations and hands-on activities exposing students

lass is now in session for the 17th year of Weston University. This one-of-a-kind program allows select high school students to explore the various departments and agencies that make up our local government. The Class of 2019 is comprised of 24 students from Cypress Bay High School, Western High School and the Sagemont Upper School. Once a month, Weston’s city leaders welcome Weston University students into their offices. The program exposes students to local government, giving them first-hand insight into the work that goes into running a city. Fittingly, the seven-month civic education program kicked off during Florida City Government Week.

to the numerous City services and functions provided to Weston residents. Last month, students explored Weston’s Fire and Emergency Medical Services and this month students will learn about Community Services and Public Works. Future programs include lessons on Development Services: Planning & Zoning/Engineering; Law Enforcement Services; and Finance and Technology Services. The program culminates with a mock City Commission meeting in which students play the roles of city leaders and residents to carry out the agenda.

Fond Farewell to Commissioner Toby Feuer BY STACEY BOMSER

ity officials, community leaders and local law enforcement agents came together to wish Commissioner Toby Feuer a fond farewell. For the past eight years, she has dedicated herself to serving the City of Weston. While presiding over her final City Commission meeting, she was recognized for her years of leadership, service and selfless civic devotion to the community. City Manager John Flint has affectionately called Commissioner Feuer the “hardest working retired lady we know” and that statement could not be truer. A Weston resident since 1998, Commissioner Feuer moved here after retiring from Brooklyn College and immediately became an active resident of her new community. Before winning a seat on the Weston City Commission in 2010, Commissioner Feuer served as vice president of her condo association and president of the Bonaventure President’s Council. While in office, Commissioner Feuer was appointed by the City of Weston

as its representative to the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization. She was also appointed to the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women. Over the years, Commissioner Feuer has held several positions on the Broward Coalition’s Board of Directors, currently serving as second vice president. Commissioner Feuer is also actively involved in numerous community organizations including the Weston Music Society, Weston Friends of the

Library, Hadassah, ORT America, and the American Association of University Women. One of Commissioner Feuer’s greatest accomplishments as a Weston City Commissioner was championing the Weston Community Emergency Response (CERT) Team program. Today it boasts nearly 100 volunteers trained by BSO Fire Rescue to provide aid and support in the event of a disaster or emergency situation. During the recognition ceremony,

former Weston Fire Chief Bruce Caruso presented Commissioner Feuer with an honorary fire chief’s hat and Weston Police Chief Kevin Butler gave her a glass plaque from the Broward Sheriff’s Office. On behalf of the City Commission and staff, Mayor Daniel Stermer presented Commissioner Feuer with an inscribed vase and memory book illustrating her years of dedication and service to the City of Weston. Commissioner Feuer was also honored by her son, Mitchell, and daughter, Sharon, along with friends and colleagues including Renee Smoley, the “Mother of Weston”, Weston Music Society Co-President Lou Marett, and American Association of University Women – Weston Branch President Kamala Anandam. Commissioner Feuer has been replaced by Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie, who won Commission Seat 4 during last month’s election. Commissioner Byron Jaffe ran unopposed for Seat 3.

BY PHYLLIS SCARBERRY ecently I listed a home in Weston Hills Country Club, and it “flew off the shelf” while other homes of similar pricing stayed on the market long after my property had closed. Why? Three reasons: Staging, Pricing and Exposure – and not necessarily in that order. 1.  Staging Very few agents hire a professional stager. Choose an agent who is concerned about how your home appears to potential buyers. In South Florida, the seasons sometimes go unnoticed. My Sellers often ask me – when is a great time to list? Should I list during the holidays? The answer is yes! Take advantage of seasonal decorating. ▸▸ Scents make sense. Smells of apple pie, pumpkin and cinnamon, and leaves all can offer up buyers a cozy, warm feel for the holiday season. Try scented candles. ▸▸ Lighten up. With shorter days, be sure to take advantage of the natural light as much as you can by opening the drapes and blinds. ▸▸ Toss the dead palm fronds. Great curb appeal is important. Be sure to trim back any overgrown or dead plants. Also, trim trees and hedges to make sure they are not overshadowing the home’s windows or features. ▸▸ Decorate with mums and poinsettias. Pots of orange or gold chrysanthemums can instantly brighten up a porch and deck – they’re cheap and hardy too. ▸▸ Show off the fireplace and your bar or countertops. If you have a fireplace, make sure it is clean and highlighted. Purchase candles at different heights to create interest and drama. Highlight mantles and countertops with décor, like a simple vase of pinecones. During an open house, when a real estate professional is present, you may want to have the candles flickering, especially in the late afternoon, to add to the home’s coziness. 2.  Pricing This is where experience counts. Having several metrics other than the MLS system is key to taking a bird’s eye view of the market. RPR and Facts & Trends are just two of the other metrics utilized to determine the right listing price. A home that is on the market for an inordinate period of time costs the homeowner time and money – and exposes him to liability. Homeowners may not blame the market – but blame the “marketer” if his neighbor’s home sells more quickly than his. Pricing is key. 3.  Exposure Listing with an agent whose company touts multiple affiliations globally is a great idea. In the luxury markets, an affiliation with luxury entities, such as premier auction houses, such as Christie’s, is essential to reaching those individuals who could afford your home. Art collectors look for residences that allow them to showcase their art and lifestyle. Other affiliates who market to Europe and highend audiences are extremely important. Local marketing, such as postcards, magazine ads and custom brochures, is also key in selling homes. Locals sometimes prefer to stay local – and opt to upsize or downsize. They are sometimes your best audience. Choosing a professional who believes in staging, right pricing and exposure should be on the top of your list of questions before putting your home on the market.

Community Leaders Celebrate Literacy

C

ity leaders joined hundreds of volunteers across Broward County in participating in this year’s Read for the Record. Elementary school students countywide were treated to a reading of Maybe Something Beautiful, and the day was truly a beautiful experience for all involved. Here in Weston, Mayor Daniel Stermer and Director of Communications Denise Barrett-Miller read to children at Manatee Bay Elementary School, while students at Indian Trace Elementary School were treated to a storytime session with BSO Deputies Gago and Hernandez. “If you have ever read to a child and seen the sparkle in their eyes… imagine reading to an entire class,” shared Barrett-Miller. Read for the Record is sponsored nationally by Jumpstart, an early education organization. This annual campaign was launched more than ten years ago to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child, so that all children have the opportunity to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed. Through a partnership with the Children’s Services Council, every pre-kindergarten

a

and kindergarten student in Broward County received a copy of this year’s book, Maybe Something Beautiful. That’s 40,000 books for 40,000 children. Maybe Something Beautiful, by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell and illustrated by Rafael Lopez, is based on a true story of how art can inspire change and how even the smallest artists can accomplish something big. The beautifully-illustrated children’s book tells the story of a community’s triumph against the darker forces of social decay. In the story, Mira decides to paste her drawing of a sun on one of the dark walls of an alley to bring brightness to the smiles of her neighbors. Although told as a child’s story, Maybe Something Beautiful is a true story of transformation, based on the work of two exceptional people committed to art and social justice. Rafael and Candice López turned the alleys of the East Village in San Diego into art canvases, and the darkness of their neighborhood into a world of possible hope and beauty. BY STACEY BOMSER ou’ve probably heard of aging gracefully, but have you heard of Ageless Grace? It is a cutting-edge brain fitness program designed to improve cognitive function and physical well-being. Starting this month, the Weston Branch Library is offering this free program every Monday. Ageless Grace is based on the science of neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain and central nervous system to change its form and function specifically when stimulated with physical movement. The program is based on scientific proof. “A $20 million study, at Harvard Medical School, showed that the most effective way to stave off mental decline is for the body to move and create new patterns for the brain, rather than separating body and brain exercises,” states Ageless Grace Certified Educator Eleanor Robinson. “The goal of Ageless Grace it to ensure that your mental lifespan matches your body’s lifespan with movements consisting of fun tools done to great music.” Tools is the term Ageless Grace uses for exercises. The program features 21 playfully named tools each designed to have special benefits. For example, Juicy Joints provides improved flexibility

and ease of movement, increased range of motion, joint strength, stamina and stability. Each class session includes about ten different tools. “The tools consist of everyday movements which are natural and organic to the body and patterns that play games with the mind,” explains Robinson. “The tools include imagery, creativity, playfulness, variety, polarity, sound expression, words and games.” All of the tools (exercises) are done while sitting, making Ageless Grace an ideal program for seniors. “Because they are seated, it provides a sense of stability and sense of security,” notes Robinson. “It is restorative. It helps them get back their functions and it is good for preventive measures. Ageless Grace is aerobic, it’s interval training, and it’s core strengthening.”

Ageless Grace is good for the body and the brain. “It is important to boost brain fitness as we age because neuroscientists believe the purpose of the brain is to control movement of the body. Movement in turn, can change the brain,” states Robinson. “Ageless Grace is more like play with a purpose of getting and keeping a healthy brain and body for life.” Robinson encourages Weston residents to try out this fun, free program which promotes vitality and youthfulness. “We laugh out loud, act silly and remember how it was to have fun. We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing!” n Ageless Grace is offered every Monday from 11am-12pm at the Weston Branch Library. For more information call the library at 954-357-5578 or visit www.agelessgrace.com.

Weston Miracle League Hits a Home Run for Players and Volunteers BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he Weston Miracle League is in its 12th season. The program has grown immensely over the years, now attracting about 20 players and more than 100 volunteers. The Jurko family started the program to provide children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball and create positive relationships with peer buddies. “My parents brought up this idea when my brothers and I were still attending middle and elementary school,” states TJ Jurko, who is now 25 and sits on the Board of the Weston Miracle League. “We were all athletes who loved sports and had experience

with handicapped kids. Since the first season of the Weston Miracle League, our goal has always been for the kids to have a great time and enjoy playing sports, but to this day I’m not sure who has more fun – the players or the buddies!” The Weston Miracle League is not a competitive league, rather it’s all about companionship and sportsmanship. There is no cost to participate and no prior baseball experience is necessary. “While some of the kids are batting and running the bases, we have others working on batting practice, playing catch with a glove, or enjoying various activities in the outfield,” explains TJ. “We conclude every game with a ‘victory tunnel’ that the players go through with all their friends cheering them on. It puts a huge smile on everyone’s face!” That’s the beauty of the Weston Miracle League – it’s a positive experience for everyone involved. According to TJ, “The players benefit from having an experience of not only playing baseball, but also interacting with so many volunteers who just want to encourage them and make sure they have a great time. The volunteers find it very rewarding and it builds confidence for them when they discover how

fun it is to make others feel good about themselves.” It’s this positive experience that keeps players like David Pendas coming back year after year. He is a young adult with autism who has been part of the Weston Miracle League for about eight years. “He gets to play a game with young people who love the sport. They talk with him and try to help him feel like he belongs,” shares Diane Aquilera, David’s mother. Andres Jaime is another long-time player. His mother, Daisy, says his social skills have improved since joining the league. She credits the volunteers. “They are very caring with our special children. They make them feel important and included.” The Weston Miracle League plays Sunday afternoons, through the end of January, at Rose Price Park in Pembroke Pines. It’s open to players, ages five and up, and volunteers, age 13 and older. For more information visit www.westonmiracleleague.com.

Holiday Safety Tips BY DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN ecember is known for festive celebrations, flickering lights and joyful displays of the holiday season. It’s a time when we proudly display our holiday decorations while sharing precious moments with family, neighbors and friends. It can also be a time of a greater fire risk that can quickly turn this festive season into a devastating one. Fortunately, with added awareness the season can remain festive and safe for everybody. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), Christmas and New Year’s Eve are notoriously known as the holidays with the greatest number of house fires. During this season, on average, Fire Rescue agencies across the United States respond to over 450 cooking fires per day, 860 home fires caused from decorations, and greater than 300 fires caused by candles. Here are some tips that will help ensure you and your family enjoys the 2018 holiday season and ring in 2019 safely. Cooking - Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires and the related injuries, with most involving the stovetop. ▸▸ Stay in the kitchen while you’re frying, grilling or broiling food; turn it off any time you leave the kitchen. ▸▸ Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop, such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, and towels. ▸▸ Create a “kid-free zone” of at least three feet around the stove. ▸▸ Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. If a fire occurs, slide the lid over the pan, turn off the stovetop and call 911. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Christmas Trees – Of the 230 home fires caused by Christmas trees per year, one in every three is caused by electrical problems, and one in six result from a heat source that’s too close to the tree. ▸▸ When choosing a real tree, make sure the green needles don’t fall off when touched. Before placing it in the stand, cut two inches from the base of the trunk. Be sure to water it daily and get rid the tree once it becomes dry. ▸▸ Make sure your tree is not blocking an exit and is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, space heaters, candles, heat vents, or hot lights. ▸▸ Never use a lit candle to decorate a tree. Use indoor lights that are labeled with the independent testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratory and have the UL stamp, following the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords, or loose bulb connections. ▸▸ Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving the home or going to bed. Candles - December is the peak month for home candle fires. ▸▸ Consider using flameless candles, which look and smell like real candles. ▸▸ When burning candles, keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn, and remember to blow the candles out when you leave the room or go to bed. ▸▸ Use sturdy candle holders that won’t tip over, and only on uncluttered surfaces. ▸▸ Avoid using candles in the bedroom – where more than one third of home candle fires begin – or other areas where people may fall asleep. ▸▸ Never leave a child or pet alone in a room with a burning candle. From our home to yours, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services wishes you and your family a happy and safe holiday season and healthy New Year.

BSO Offers Holiday Safety Tips BY STACEY BOMSER

W

hile the holiday season may be a time for giving, unfortunately, it is also a time for taking. Do not let thieves spoil your holiday. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District offers some simple tips to help keep you and your possessions safe. Weston is continually ranked as one of the safest cities in the country. While the incidence of violent crime may be low, Weston does experience property crime. Vehicle burglary is especially common here, so BSO Weston reminds residents to Lock It, Don’t Lose It. Vehicle burglary is a crime of opportunity. Most of these crimes can be prevented simply by removing valuable items from the car or keeping them out of sight. This is particularly important at this time of year when many people are shopping for holiday gifts for loved ones. If possible, do not leave packages visible in the car, especially when going from one store to another. BSO also warns against placing your purse, wallet or other valuables in the trunk. Thieves may be watching and waiting for the opportunity to steal. Another simple, yet often overlooked, safety tip is to lock the car. You may live in a gated community, but crime still occurs. BSO wants residents to make it a habit of always locking the car door – and taking the

key fob with you – every time you leave; even if just for a few minutes to run a simple errand like dropping a child off at sports practice or picking up the dry-cleaning. Adding to that, BSO says be sure to always close and lock your garage door. In addition to property theft, vehicle burglaries put you at risk of identify theft and home burglary. Thieves can gain access to personal papers, such as the automobile registration or insurance cards, that may contain your home address, not to mention access to your garage door opener. Home burglary is a concern this time of year when many families travel either to celebrate the holidays with family and friends or for vacation. Weston BSO encourages residents to sign up for the Home Watch program. A BSO deputy, community service aid, or C.O.P. (Citizens Observer Patrol) volunteer will drive by your unoccupied residence and perform a daily perimeter check for signs of break-in or suspicious activity. To register for this free service, simply download the Home Watch form from the City of Weston website (www.westonfl.org/home/showdocument?id=344). Once you complete the form, return it to the BSO District Office at 17300 Royal Palm Boulevard.

Homeowners must provide the dates and times the home will be unoccupied, along with a contact phone number of a trusted neighbor or local friend or relative. In addition to registering for Home Watch, Weston BSO recommends you: ▸▸ Let a trusted neighbor know you will be out of town and leave a spare key and an emergency telephone number; ▸▸ Make your home appear occupied by attaching timers to the lights and television sets; ▸▸ Open some of the drapes or blinds – during the daytime hours this gives the appearance that someone is home, and during the evening it makes lights inside the house more visible; ▸▸ Have your newspaper and mail held or picked up by a friend or neighbor; ▸▸ Invite a neighbor to park their car in your driveway; ▸▸ Lock your garage door and disconnect the automatic door opener; ▸▸ Don’t forget to set your alarm; ▸▸ Never leave a message on your voicemail stating you are out of town and don’t post on social media that you are away.

Santa Claus is coming to town. The holiday celebration continues at Weston Town Center with visits from Jolly Old Saint Nick on select weekends. On Friday nights, December 7th, 14th and 21st, enjoy live musical performances while visiting with Santa. Children can also ride the choo-choo train. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 12/31/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Andrea or Annie for an appointment. LEGISLATIVE LOOK

National Cyber Security Awareness BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK his year marks the 15th year of a campaign for the National Cyber Security Awareness Alliance, which is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the National Cyber Security Alliance and industry to ensure that consumers have the information they need for online safety. This campaign encourages consumers to STOP. THINK.CONNECT. ▸▸ STOP – make sure security measures are in place ▸▸ THINK – about the consequences of your actions and behaviors online; and ▸▸ CONNECT – enjoy the internet. A variety of cyber safety information and easy to follow tips and resources can be found at www. StopThinkConnect.org. An educated consumer is the best defense against the many forms of cybercrime, including identity theft, financial fraud, stalking, online bullying or hacking. Here is a list of what you should watch out for: ▸▸ Identity Theft – the illegal use of someone else’s personal information to obtain money or credit. Be on the lookout for suspicious bank withdrawals, credit charges you did not authorize, or bills for products or services you did not buy. ▸▸ Phishing or Imposter Scams – online communications or emails designed to lure individuals to provide sensitive information. Be wary of any unsolicited messages that urge you to act immediately, wire money, click on a suspicious link or ask for personal information. Be skeptical of emails that ask you to ‘confirm’ or ‘update’ your email address; contact the entity directly to verify the legitimacy of the request. Phishing emails may look legitimate, but most contain spelling or grammatical errors. ▸▸ Malware and Viruses – malicious software designed to gain access or damage your computer system. Update your security software, web browser and operating system often. Selecting a suspicious link in a phishing email can install malware on your computer allowing scammers to gain access to personal information. ▸▸ Ransomware – a type of malware that prevents or limits users from accessing their system, unless a ransom is paid to restore access. Protect against data loss by backing up your files and keeping them safe on a physical storage device. The Department of Homeland Security recommends these simple tips for battling cybercrime: ▸▸ Keep a clean machine. Regularly update the security software and operating system on your computer and mobile devices. ▸▸ When in doubt, throw it out. Stop and think before opening attachments or clicking links in emails. Do not open an email if it looks suspicious. ▸▸ Use stronger authentication. You can opt to enable stronger authentication when available. A stronger authentication helps verify a user has authorized access to an online account. Kids are now introduced to technology younger than ever, and the best way to protect children online is to talk to them, early and often. There are several tools to help supervise kids’ internet usage, such as parental controls that filter and block harmful sites, limited internet time, and kid-oriented search engines. Talk to your children about internet safety. Help them understand which online sources are safe and trustworthy. Teach them that not everything on the internet is true, people online may not be who they appear or claim to be, and information or images they share can be seen around the world.

Weston Teen’s Let’s Talk Baseball Program Is A Hit With Seniors

sher Jurman has been collecting sports memorabilia from the 1940’s-1960’s since he was ten years old. Over the years he’s enjoyed sharing his collection of baseball gloves, balls, bats, magazines and cards with his grandparents. The astute NSU University School junior noticed how much joy it brought his family members to reminisce about their younger lives while admiring his baseball memorabilia, so he decided to share his collection with other seniors, creating an outreach program called Let’s Talk Baseball. “When I would visit my grandfather at his memory care unit, I would bring some of my collection because he loves baseball too and we used to go to games together,” explains Asher. “He always seemed to perk up just seeing my stuff. There were other residents, along with their caregivers, who were curious to see my baseball items. Some of the higher functioning seniors shared a few of their own baseball memories. I thought I could help seniors relive or remember some of their favorite memories, so I created this program, visiting assisted living facilities and memory care units.” Asher has reached over 100 seniors to date. The children were able to learn about our nation’s “First Americans” by joining a simulated powwow complete with chants, stories and songs. “During the Social Studies lesson, students learned to identify Native American tribes from different geographic regions of North America and compared cultural aspects such as clothing, shelter, food, major beliefs and practices, music, art, and interactions with the environment,” explains Fifth Grade Teacher Nicole Thorpe. Country Isles Students Step Up on International Walk to School Day BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents at Country Isles Elementary School are putting their best foot forward when it comes to starting the day in a healthy way. About onethird of the student body participated in this year’s International Walk to School Day. Students from all 50 states and 40 countries participated in the event, which creates awareness for safer routes for walking and bicycling. The program also emphasizes the importance of physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment, and building connections between families, schools and the community. This year, Broward County Public Schools partnered with the Broward Metropolitan Planning

Organization to promote International Walk to School Day. Country Isles was one of 24 elementary schools invited to participate in the program, with students walking alongside parents, volunteers, school administrators, elected officials and community leaders. Weston City Commissioner Toby Feuer took part in the program, as did members of the Weston Broward Sheriff’s Office. “We feel lucky to work in an amazing community with dedicated law enforcement and fire rescue personnel,” shared Principal Mindy Morgan. “The mayor and city officials inspire our community to participate in outdoor activities by maintaining the beautiful landscaping and peaceful environment.” Principal Morgan believes Country Isles was selected to take part because of its unique location. “Country Isles Elementary is the oldest school in Weston and tucked away in a beautiful community. The location of the school is nestled around many houses which provides easy access to walk to school.” She believes walking to

school is a great way to start the day and encourages students and families to walk more often. “Walking is a form of exercise and exercise gets our mind working and our bodies energized for the day. We want to promote healthy lifestyles. Encouraging our families to walk to school is one way to enhance physical and mental activity.” Walk to School Day is just one of many initiatives the school is undertaking to encourage health and wellness. “Throughout the year, Country Isles Elementary will continue to promote starting your day in a healthy way,” states Principal Morgan. “The goal is to raise awareness and support for health, community and environmental benefits by regularly walking or biking to school.” The school is also encouraging participation in this month’s Mayor’s Challenge Cup 1-Mile Family Health Walk, which is part of the Rotary Club of Weston’s Run for Tomorrow event.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS BY DEBBY TEICH

T

his month, families will celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. They will decorate trees; sing carols; and anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus. They will light Menorahs; play with dreidels; and indulge in festive foods like latkes. They will focus on the seven core values of Kwanzaa; light the Kinara and place a Mkeka on the table. For many, it is a time for gift giving. The holidays can also be a wonderful time for families and friends to put down their electronics to reconnect and spend quality time together, as they celebrate old traditions and create new ones. It is an opportunity to teach children about their heritage and the true meaning of the holidays. Every family’s style of celebration is different, and it is those differences that make the holidays so magical. And remember, traditions don’t always have to be traditional; they come in all shapes, sizes and varieties. Below are some simple ways to celebrate both the traditions and spirit of the holidays. ▸ Make holiday foods together. So much of the holidays revolves around cooking and eating traditional foods. It is a great time to pass down a family recipe. Whether it is baking cookies and pies, frying latkes, or cooking brisket and turkey, get as many family members to help in the kitchen. Assign each one a task. Play some fun holiday music to make it even more festive. ▸ Limit your gift giving. Many families save all year to be able to afford a wide range of gifts for every family member. Decide on a designated amount, so everyone gets the same number. One might even be a trip or event that the whole family can do together. Or, skip the gifts and focus on being together and family traditions, instead of unwrapping gifts. ▸ Read a holiday book together. Pull out a copy of one your favorite holiday books from your childhood and read it with your kids. Or, read a new story together. ▸ Be kind to others. Volunteer as a family and do something special for someone else. Visit

a nursing home; collect food items for a local shelter; work in a soup kitchen or food bank; bring blankets to the homeless; or contact a nonprofit that needs a helping hand. Recount your childhood traditions. Children love to hear about how their parents celebrated when they were young. Talk about your own family traditions and ask the children to suggest new ones. Celebrate the holidays with your family long distance. Today’s technology makes it easy to connect with family that live in other places, so you can celebrate the holidays together and continue to make new memories. Wear the same pajamas. Watch the same movie at the same time. Place a group video call for some virtual caroling or a virtual dreidel game. Make a family recipe together, even if you are not in the same kitchen. Keep a smile on your face. A smile is often contagious. Try to smile as you go about your errands. Treat each sales clerk and cashier with kindness. Set the table with festive decorations. Get the kids involved in setting the table with crafts they made and other holiday decorations.

▸ Give a handmade gift. Instead of shopping in the traditional places, come up with something creative and make your own homemade gift. These are often the most meaningful gifts you can give. ▸ Adopt a needy family. There are so many children that long for gifts on the holidays. Adopt a family and find out what they want. You can even deliver the gifts as a family. ▸ Count down to the holidays. Extend the excitement of the holidays and start celebrating before they begin. Create a list of fun activities

that families can do together in the days prior. ▸ Create family rituals. Create a few rituals to observe each year that family and friends will look forward to as the season approaches. ▸ Watch television together. Gather the family together in one room to enjoy a holiday snack and watch a holiday classic. ▸ Make a Giving Tree. Buy a small artificial tree and hang paper ornaments with the names of charities and gifts the needy might want. Ask each child to select a charity and purchase the gifts. You can even deliver the gifts with the kids. ▸ Create a holiday craft together. Whether it is a Christmas tree ornament, Menorah or Kinara, spend quality time with the kids making simple crafts they can display. ▸ Make a gingerbread house. Explore your creativity (and sweet tooth) by decorating a gingerbread house together. Then display their masterpiece on your holiday table. If that is too difficult or time consuming, decorate gingerbread cookies instead. ▸ Plan a special day together. Plan to spend a day with your family and leave the electronics behind. Go to the beach, zoo, movies or plan a picnic in a park. ▸ Spread holiday cheer with baked goods. Deliver some of your baked goods to friends, family

and neighbors. Wrap them in holiday colors and include a special hand-printed message from the kids. ▸ Deck the halls. The most decorated area of the house is typically the living room. Spread holiday cheer to the bedrooms, hallways and other areas of the house. ▸ Call friends and relatives. Make a surprise call to someone who was not expecting it. They will be happy to hear from you.

Imagine Charter School Kindergarten Students Enlist in ABC Boot Camp BY STACEY BOMSER

t Imagine Charter School at Weston, kindergarten students are able to quickly learn the letters of the alphabet. The entire grade participates in ABC Boot Camp, a 26-day intensive program which focuses on one letter name and sound each day, starting with A and ending with Z. “Each day students discuss words that start with the letter of the day and we record them on a chart,” explains kindergarten biliterate teacher KC Halle. “Each student was assigned a letter and brought in an item starting with that letter for an Alphabet Show and Tell. For ‘D’ a student brought in a toy dinosaur. For ‘I’ a student brought in ice cream for the class. For ‘Y’ a student brought yogurt for the class.”

Ms. Halle says ABC Boot Camp made it easier for her students to learn the alphabet because they were able to explore the letters in so many different ways. “It is important to engage children with hands-on learning activities like this because they understand concepts better by doing than just by listening to a teacher. The students also engage more when they are interacting with their peers. When their friends presented their letters, they were more engaged learning about that letter.” As a culminating activity for the alphabet lesson, Ms. Halle’s class presented an Alphabet Fashion Show for the other kindergarten classes and Assistant Principal Sumner. Each child created a vest representing one letter of the alphabet and then walked down the hallway modeling their letter. “They decorated the front and back of their vest with items starting with their letter,” stated Ms. Halle. “They drew pictures of items, found pictures of items, and even used physical items. Some students had toys on their vests, such as a stuffed monkey for ‘M’ and plastic lobster for ‘L’. Students also attached household items such as coffee beans and an ice cream cone for ‘C’, jelly beans for ‘J’, and a net for ‘N.’” Ms. Halle considers the Alphabet Fashion Show a success. “It allowed students to really explore a letter and see how often that letter is used. This was a fun way for students to show what they have learned.”

Eagle Point Elementary Second Graders Engage in Postcard Exchange BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents in Maria Vasquez’s Second Grade Dual Language – English class at Eagle Point Elementary are learning about geography, topography, weather and distance in a unique way. The class is participating in a postcard exchange with second grade classes across the country. By the end of the school year, they should have received a post card from every state. Ms. Vasquez says she got involved with this project through a Facebook networking group she belongs to called “Not So Wimpy Second Grade Teachers.” She says it is an opportunity for teachers to come together online to share ideas about lessons, units, themes or simply “when you are stuck with something, you post it, and everyone shares solutions.” The postcard exchange is a fun way to incorporate several subjects into one activity: social studies, math, and science. For example, the students learn geography by locating the different states, math to measure distance from the other school to Eagle Point, and science while talking about topography and climate. “The kids are super excited to learn about the

POSITIVE PARENTING

You Are Not Invisible BY IVIS MATEOS ecently, a dear friend shared an incredible video with me. The video spoke about how sometimes it feels like we are not being heard. As women, sometimes we feel as if the people around us do not recognize our existence, almost as if we were invisible. It seems as if the things we say or do on a daily basis are dismissed by the people we care most about. Quite frustrating to say the least. It’s not a good feeling. The great news is that for the most part you are actually being silently appreciated. I have done my own personal research and have asked plenty of older, wiser women I know, and they reassure me the work is not in vain. Believe it or not, your children and your significant others are listening. They are taking your advice into consideration and perhaps even applying your precious wise words into their daily life consciously or unconsciously. Every child, teenager and even grown men and women, need a champion in their life. They need someone who will not give up on them. A person who will lose sleep over them, pray all night and day for their well-being, and will often remind them of how much they matter. Therefore, however difficult and unappreciated our job might seem, be thankful that you are given the opportunity to shape a life and character of a human that will one day, perhaps after you are long gone, acknowledge how important your annoying role as a mother or leader has played in their life. Someone once said that the breathtaking, grand cathedrals of Europe – which we love to spend time admiring and historians love to write about – were built by men whose names will never be heard and faces will never be seen. These men spent most of their lives and energy building something they would never see completed themselves. However, their hard work, body-aches from longs days of work and commitment to the project has allowed many generations to admire their grand work. When we are standing in front of one of these breathtaking cathedrals, we think about the astonishing craftsmanship, the deep devotion of the builders, and the beauty before us. This, too, will be the result of our relentless work as mothers. This holiday season let us take the time to be thankful for the gift God has granted us of being a parent. Be thankful that your hard work, aches and pain from the daily work, even if it feels unnoticed, is all worth it in the long run because we are in the process of building our own grand cathedral.

Large or Small, We Top ALL!

Would My Child Benefit from Sedation Dentistry? (Part II) BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN ast month’s editorial (Part 1) covered the process in deciding upon the need and therefore use of sedation dentistry. This process requires the consideration of many factors ranging from the child’s dental needs and age to family finances. This month’s article will assume the need and focus mostly on available options. In other words, it will tend to be less emotional and more scientifically driven. The major criteria in choosing a specific sedative agent is the depth of sedation desired. The concept of level of sedation is so important that most professional organizations categorize sedation not by the individual drugs or route of administration but rather through the level of sedation created. The categorized levels of sedation are the following: minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia. The importance of this distinction is that a facility must be adequately staffed and equipped to monitor the level of sedation used. It is important to note that facilities offering different modes of sedation are strictly regulated and go through an annual recertification process. In an effort to simplify the discussion, I will review some sedative medications based on mode of delivery as this is usually how they are presented in the office setting. Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is the only inhalation sedative used in pediatric dentistry. It is used as a “minimal sedative” mostly for its relief of anxiety. It is mixed in combination with pure oxygen which assures proper concentration of oxygen to the body. Its excellent safety record along with versatility of use makes it the most commonly used sedative agent in pediatric dentistry. The oral sedatives can potentially span all of the levels of sedation. For example, Diazapam (Valium) or Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), when used by themselves, are mostly used as minimal sedatives. However, when used in larger doses or in combination with other oral sedatives, these agents can cross over into moderate sedation or even deep sedation. There are many factors having to do with their absorption through the digestive system, which make them more unpredictable in terms of the degree of sedation as well as duration of effect. For this reason, their use is not usually recommended for extensive treatment plans and is usually titrated from visit to visit. The sedatives delivered intravenously are used for the purpose of deep sedation. The use of these agents can be used for extended treatment times and can usually be reversed if needed by antagonist agents. Thus, intravenous sedation is the most versatile and predictable technique used in the dental office. General anesthesia, practically speaking, provides for similar conveniences as intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia must be performed in a hospital setting and is specifically used for patients who have a higher potential for airway obstruction. When considering the use of sedation for your child, it is important to recognize that one form of sedation is not inherently better than another. Be open to all options and consider which is most appropriate for the individual patient and situation. The goal of proposed treatment should not only be the effective completion of needed dental work but more importantly doing so with a resultant positive attitude and safety of the child. This cannot be consistently achieved with a one size fits all approach.

Ankle Ligament Injuries in Teenagers and Adults BY DR. CARLO MESSINA

T

he ankle is a complex joint consisting of bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and joint lining. The primary motion of the ankle is up and down. It has limited side-to-side motion. When excess motion occurs from side to side, ankle ligaments can tear. Ligaments connect bones together. Once the ligaments are torn instability can develop. On the outside of the ankle there are three ligaments. The inside of the ankle has five and connecting the tibia and fibula are three more. Ankle ligament injuries can occur from stepping off of a step and rolling the ankle, to playing sports and coming down and landing on somebody’s foot. It is also very common in women who wear heels and roll their ankle to the outside, causing damage to the ligament structure of the ankle. When ligament injuries occur, it is most often associated with a feeling of a crack or a pop, and is associated with pain, swelling, occasionally discoloration and inability to weightbear. It is always best to evaluate these ankle injuries

as soon as possible. A thorough history and physical will allow the doctor to identify the ligaments that have been injured and the extent of the injury. X-rays are taken and occasionally MRIs if the suspected damage is significant.

ANKLE SPRAIN

Treatment is then aimed at reducing the damage to the ligaments and giving the ligaments an opportunity to heal primarily. Treatment for these injuries could be as simple as RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). For a very simple stretching

injury to the ankle ligaments, an ankle brace is used most often. When the ligaments are torn, then immobilization is absolutely necessary. A boot or a cast is applied for two to six weeks. Patients are allowed to immediately weightbear. Cross training is completely allowed. Avoid any type of anti-inflammatory. This will help to reduce the inflammation but at the cost of allowing those ligaments to heal because inflammation is a critical part of the healing process. Physical therapy may be necessary after cast removal. A return to sports could take four to eight weeks. Chronic instability may develop if treatment has not been initiated immediately. This may be corrected with a ligament tightening procedure. Long-term prognosis is almost always excellent. n Carlo A. xposure to heavy metals is common and has been linked to serious health issues. Are you at risk? In a previous article, I wrote about “The Dirty Dozen.” This is a top 12 list of produce items that were shown to have pesticide residue, even after being washed, as revealed by The Environmental Working Group (EWG). The research indicated up to 70% of conventionally grown produce had traces of pesticide, with spinach having the greatest amount of residue by weight. Now we are going to dive into why this information is important and what other pollutants we want to keep our eye out for. Individuals need to understand that pesticides are toxic to the human body and have been shown to be detrimental to a person’s health. What is even more alarming is that children are at greater risk because the pesticides will stay in their bodies for a longer period of time. Consider this. After studying Ecuadorian children during peak pesticide spraying season, researchers found the youngsters had lower attention spans and less self-control than children who were tested later. They concluded pesticide exposure causes a short-term decline in neurological functions, which is a problem considering Ecuador is a major producer of flowers and pesticide levels peak during harvest season. Newborns who are exposed to agricultural chemicals have higher risk for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in addition to other health risks. But agricultural poison is not the only thing that’s making our bodies toxic. In today’s day and age, we are exposed by multiple sources in our environment without even knowing it. Toxic metals such as cadmium, arsenic, lead and cooper are also a great concern worldwide. A recent study found exposure to these heavy metals is linked to an increased risk for heart disease even if exposure is relatively low. It’s important to note that exposure is common and it is almost ignored by cardiovascular disease prevention programs, according to study authors. If you are using e-cigarettes, for example, you are at risk due to the heating coil. These heating coils may have toxins that contain heavy metals that may include lead, cadmium and nickel which have been associated with increase risk in heart disease and cancer. As numerous studies prove, exposure to toxins causes cells to die, affecting overall health by triggering disease and speeding up the aging process. As a functional medicine practice, Bellissimo Medical offers specialized testing and is equipped to initiate detoxification treatment if toxins are confirmed. Although awareness and exercising caution are important, it is hard to control environmental pollutants. One promising solution is the use of glutathione, an antioxidant that is particularly helpful in detoxifying the body and combating cell damage. Unfortunately, as we age we slow down production of this substance, but can boost it with supplementation. As always, be sure to work with a qualified professional if you suspect you may have been exposed and need to detox from heavy metal contamination. Selfdiagnosis or taking over-the-counter supplements without medical advice is not the best option.

Indian Trace Elementary Second Graders Learn Japanese Language and Culture BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents in Madelen Sanchez’s second grade gifted and talented class at Indian Trace Elementary School are learning to speak Japanese. They are participating in Broward County School’s Tomodachi program, which is open to all students in grades one through five. “Tomodachi, which means friends in Japanese, is a weekly distance learning class taught by Sensei (teacher) Satoko Fisher,” explains Mrs. Sanchez. “We use a program similar to Skype in which Sensei Fisher teaches conversational Japanese as well as Japanese culture and traditions.”

76 DECEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY WESTON |OURCITYMEDIA.COM

Mrs. Sanchez says her students really enjoy the class and are already learning to converse in Japanese. “They can carry a simple conversation that includes greetings, what they like or not like, what they eat, etc. They also learn numbers, colors, names of family members, names of animals, and many survival phrases.” In addition to teaching the Japanese language, Sensei Fisher teaches children about Japanese culture. “In the culture part, we learn about the life of the common Japanese person, what they eat, how they dress, how schools operate. We also learn about celebrations such as Children’s Day,” explains Mrs. Sanchez, noting that her students really enjoy the fun facts Sensei Fisher shares. For example, in Japan you should slurp your noodles, not doing so is considered impolite. And students in Japan are expected to serve lunch and clean the classroom. As part of the Tomodachi program, Sensei Fisher also visits the schools to engage students in handson activities. She recently conducted a traditional Japanese tea ceremony at Indian Trace Elementary. She has also taught calligraphy lessons, showing students how to write a simple sentence in Japanese characters using traditional Japanese writing

instruments. Mrs. Sanchez says one of the most exciting lessons is when Sensei Fisher brings her suitcase. “In this activity, she opens the suitcase and the students pick out an item that intrigues them. She then explains the purpose of the item. Let me tell you, these items are unique!” Indian Trace students also participate in the annual Japan Day, joining Tomodachi students from other schools. The children enjoy performances by Japanese Taiko drummers, traditional Japanese instruments, skits and more. “My students also participate in the annual Haiku contest that is judged by the Japanese Consulate,” notes Mrs. Sanchez. “There have been many winners from Indian Trace over the six years we’ve been participating in Tomodachi.”

Imagine Charter School Presents Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration BY STACEY BOMSER

B

efore any of its current students were even born, Imagine Charter School at Weston established its Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Now in its thirteenth year, the event recognizes cultural diversity within the school and Weston community. “Imagine Charter School values the contributions of all our culturally diverse groups that represent our school population and make our community a better place to live,” shares Biliterate Program Director Maru Arnott, who also serves as the thirdgrade team leader. “We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month across grade levels with different activities and projects. The celebration in the cafeteria embodies the culmination of all the month-long learning.” Imagine Weston honors all countries from Latin America, as well as Spain. Each grade level chooses a cultural topic to explore, completing various activities and projects which are shared with the entire school. “For example, third graders completed a biography poster and presented it on TV during the morning announcements,” explains Mrs. Arnott. “Fourth grade completed a whole unit on Spain called la Madre Tierra (Mother Land). Kindergarten classes

explored the culinary similarities and differences amongst the countries with a degustation menu for students.”Of course, the day that everyone looks forward to the most is the annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration. Students dress in native clothing to represent the different countries and present cultural songs and dances. The show is presented twice, once for parents and a second time for the student body. The program is presented by the school’s biliterate department. Imagine Weston was the first school in Weston to offer a biliterate program. It started in August 2006 with one pre-kindergarten and two kindergarten classes. Today is has two classes in each grade level, kindergarten through grade five. “We are truly bi-literate, meaning students learn in both English and Spanish in all subjects: reading, grammar, math, science and social studies,” notes Mrs. Arnott. The program has been highly successful, serving as a model for biliterate programs at other local schools. The students are also achieving high recognition. Mrs. Arnott says Imagine Weston

students that graduate from fifth grade biliterate classes usually score at high school honor levels for Spanish-speakers in Spanish placement tests. The Hispanic Heritage Month program is just one of many ways Imagine Charter School at Weston celebrates and honors diversity. “We celebrate holidays around the world, African American achievers, Women’s History Month, Holocaust studies, among others,” shares Mrs. Arnott. “We believe that the more children are exposed to information about the diversity around them, the more tolerance and empathy they will have.”

Tequesta Trace Middle School Spanish Club Prepares for Competition BY STACEY BOMSER

E

very Thursday morning before school starts, members of the Tequesta Trace Middle School Spanish Club meet to practice their Spanish-speaking skills and prepare for the District’s annual World Language Academic Competition. While the Spanish Club is open to any student taking Spanish 1 or Spanish Speakers 1 who is interested

in learning and being challenged, Spanish Teacher and Club Advisor Maria Ibarra says only those students who show a commitment to attend the meetings and a desire to learn and excel are chosen for the competition. About 20 students from the Spanish Club will participate in the World Language Academic Competition in March at Rickards Middle School.

80 DECEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY WESTON |OURCITYMEDIA.COM

They will compete in three categories: Language Mastery (declamation, impromptu speaking, and live skit), Creative Display (project, posters and media) and Creative Performance Arts (dancing, singing and playing an instrument). “In the category of declamation, students are expected to research poems and practice them for mastery, so they can recite the poem fluently,” explains Señora Ibarra. “In the category of Spanish impromptus, students are expected to practice each impromptu until they are able to respond to them fluently and with confidence. In the category of live skit or talent, students practice their performance and get feedback.” This will be the fourth consecutive year that Tequesta Trace will participate in the District World Language Competition and Señora Ibarra expects another successful outcome. “In the past, several students placed

first, and a few won second place and third place. Our students have made us very proud. They are always eager to excel and learn. Their behavior and performance has been acknowledged by several judges in the past.” She encourages students to participate in the academic program because it allows students to improve their communication skills in a second language. “I provide students with the scaffolding and feedback and ensure they are engaged in their tasks and learn as they master their communication and oral fluency skills.” The Spanish Club is a mix of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers who are fluent or almost fluent. Regardless of the student’s level of proficiency, Señora Ibarra says everyone can improve and grow as a student of Spanish language through this club. Currently, all Broward County Public Schools offer Spanish as a World Language for high school credit.

n medicine today, the incorporation of holistic therapies and integrative medicine techniques are growing rapidly in virtually all fields of practice. As medicine turns to more alternative treatments and complementary therapies, the question that becomes rather natural to ask in my specialty of medicine is: How does plastic surgery fit into a world of holistic and integrative medicine? It’s a great question and here is some perspective from a plastic surgeon. Many physicians today, both personally and professionally, apply a holistic and integrative approach to their own health and wellness as well as for their patients. This stems from a more modern way of thinking that instead of just treating every ailment with some drug or medical procedure, we can incorporate complementary, holistic and integrative therapies at the same time. Given this perspective, over the last few years some plastic surgeons, although not many, have begun incorporating some holistic and integrative techniques. Let’s start with a very basic concept about plastic surgery. From a practical point of view, plastic surgery itself is not holistic or integrative, that is just a fact. The reality is that with anti-aging medicine and people striving to take better care of themselves both internally as well as externally, cosmetic surgery is here to stay. So how can a doctor take a holistic approach to plastic surgery with their patients? A plastic surgeon with a holistic approach can use techniques to complement procedures with natural preparations and post-surgery healing strategies. The art of plastic surgery procedures is not just in the medical procedure or treatment itself, but also in the way the physician helps their patients prepare themselves for procedures and the way they advise a patient to take care of themselves when healing. What does this really mean? A plastic surgeon who incorporates integrative techniques encourages patients, if time permits, to begin preparation four to six weeks prior to surgery. A typical prep could include working with a nutritionist for weight loss and overall health improvement, acupuncture treatments for improved pain management, reiki for stress reduction, and vitamin supplements and homeopathic medications before surgery to improve wound healing. Other times they will recommend a nutritional detox and/or lymphatic drainage. How a surgeon approaches each patient differs, but my experience over the years is that holistic and integrative preparation prior to procedures usually results in a quicker, less painful healing experience. Getting the mind and the body working together prior to surgery helps most patients heal after surgery. As important as the procedure is in plastic surgery, the healing process is just as important. From the beginning of patient contact, a physician’s office can be proactive by introducing holistic and integrative approaches to assist with healing. These non-traditional techniques, as a follow-up to cosmetic surgery procedures, may be one of the reasons that a patient may want to choose one plastic surgeon over another. n Dr. Tamy M. Faierman is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, writer, beauty and wellness expert, and founder of the Tamy M. Faierman Holistic Spa and Wellness Center. How Sleep Affects Ocular Health BY DR. JANE THERRIEN

A

t every age we need adequate, uninterrupted sleep for optimal, wakeful functioning. Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Traditional medicine also considers appropriate sleep, among other factors, essential to maintain ocular health. A 2016 study from Japan concluded sleep quality is associated with dry eye disease (DED), and sleep disturbance seems to be an influencing factor on DED, especially dry eye symptoms. We are familiar with ocular surface disease (OSD) in patients with sleep apnea, often associated with floppy eyelid syndrome. In examination of risk factors for severe dry eye symptoms in U.S. veterans, sleep apnea was identified as a risk factor for severe dry eye symptoms. Additionally, sleep posture may be a factor in OSD. In addition to current dry eye treatments, patients who sleep on their sides or face down may see a reduction in dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) if they change their sleep pattern to the supine position. Identifying sleep disturbance Sleep disturbance can be identified and quantified using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire tool. The PSQI is a selfreport questionnaire that assesses sleep quality over a onemonth interval. The PSQI measures the quality and patterns of sleep in older adults by measuring seven domains. It consists of 19 items generating seven component scores, such as sleep latency (i.e., how long it takes to fall asleep), sleep duration, and sleep disturbances. A 2009 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) survey disclosed that adults who reported sleeping less than the recommended seven to nine hours per night were more likely to have difficulty performing many daily tasks. Combating sleep disorders The CDC recognizes insufficient/poor sleep as a public health problem, especially since the CDC surveillance of sleep-related behaviors has increased in recent years. Additionally, the National Academy of Medicine encouraged collaboration between the CDC and the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research to support development and expansion of surveillance of the U.S. population’s sleep patterns and associated outcomes. The National Sleep Foundation offers suggestions to enhance patients’ sleep patterns— including the promotion of regular, healthy sleep habits. This begs the question: Should ODs incorporate a sleep survey into their dry eye exams? Akin to dry eye disease, there are numerous validated global and targeted patient sleep/sleepiness/insomnia questionnaires available. Questionnaires can be selected to help identify sleep disorders in subsets of patients such as pediatric, adolescent, adult patients, or obstructive sleep apnea suspects. For a consultation or more information, you can reach Dr. Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, or call 954-888-9393. Dr. Therrien and her staff look forward to exceeding your expectations.

hen a spouse is ordered to pay Permanent Alimony, it will terminate upon the re-marriage of the receiving spouse or the death of either party. Does that mean if one of the above conditions is not met alimony continues forever? Not necessarily. Florida law allows a party to modify or terminate an alimony obligation if there has been “a substantial change of circumstance.” A substantial change of circumstance requires an involuntary change which could not be anticipated at the time of the Final Judgment. Therefore, if someone voluntarily reduces his income, by quitting a job or switching to one which pays less, he cannot seek a modification. The above would be considered a voluntary change, which is not cause for a reduction. Can an individual who is paying alimony voluntarily retire and either reduce or terminate his alimony obligation? Retirement, unless it’s a mandatory retirement, is voluntary. Does a person paying alimony have to work until he dies? The answer is no! A person has the right to retire, but only under certain circumstances. The courts have ruled that a person can retire at an age which is customary in the industry in which he is employed. There are court cases which approve retirement at 55 for a law enforcement officer who is eligible after 30 years of service. There are court cases which state that a person cannot retire until he reached normal retirement age, generally considered to be over 65. Therefore, every situation is different based upon the circumstances. Just because a person retires doesn’t necessarily mean that alimony terminates. It may mean that alimony will not terminate, but be reduced according to the income the paying spouse will be receiving during retirement. The court needs to consider the not only the ability to pay but the continuing needs of the receiving spouse. The court cannot leave either party in poverty. An individual’s assets can also be taken into consideration. There have been two recent opinions from the Appellate courts concerning this issue. In one case, the receiving spouse argued that retirement would always be an anticipated event and therefore should not be the basis of a downward modification. The appellate court rejected that argument stating that their Marital Settlement Agreement did not address the issue of retirement. In another case, the appellate court allowed the trial judge to consider the fact that the wife, upon reaching the age of fifty-nine and a half; could access retirement accounts without a penalty in considering a request by the Husband for a downward modification. As you can see there is no definitive rule as to this issue, and each case must be considered individually. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Great Ways to Play Smart on the Golf Course BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL s it sometimes a struggle for you to score well on the golf course? You may feel confident on the range hitting the ball and imagine yourself making all kind of pars, birdies and eagles, only to get on the course and start making all those dreaded others. I have always felt that hitting the ball is the easiest part of the game of golf. Playing the game on the course and maneuvering your ball around the hazards to score well is the toughest part. Effective golf course management is the preeminent concept to grasp in order to be able to score well because it’s not a game of how far; rather it’s a game of how many. Here are some of the things I work on to help me with my own course management: Distance control You may be able to hit it straight on the range but if you don’t know how far you consistently hit certain clubs it is impossible to score well. The first step is to go to a range and get approximate distances you hit each club. I have a 10-yard zone for each club, for instance. My seven-iron zone is 145 to 155 yards, therefore 150 yards is my effective distance. You may have a Sky Caddie of your own on the course, or there will be yardage markers to tell you how far you are from the middle of the green. You will then need to do some addition or subtraction of yardage depending on the pin placement, wind conditions, or if the shot is uphill or downhill to decide which club to hit. Don’t bite off more than you can swallow, however. Some players simply feel that the farther it goes the better, but this is not always the case. You don’t want to force a risky shot over a hazard. Instead, lay the ball up to a comfortable distance before the hazard. This can help to get rid of those score killing penalty shots. Aiming Obviously, where you aim is important to where the ball ends up on the course. When I play, I am constantly aiming for the widest part of the fairway and always away from hazards. And, when I hit to the greens I may not always hit toward the flagstick. Make it a practice to aim at the fattest part of the green to just get the ball on the putting surface. This is the real key to lowering your score. Controlling your emotions Maintaining an even temperament will help your scoring and help you have more fun. Keep in mind that you will not hit all of your shots perfectly or get all the good bounces or breaks. When you accept this, you will score better. The next time you go out to play, see if you can apply these tips to further improve your game.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Basic Rules For Healthy Golf BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER hether you are a seasoned veteran of the fairway or golf novice, a pro or fairweather weekend warrior, back pain, shoulder pain, or some other golf-induced injury will seriously impair your game at least once during your life. Most golf injuries are the result of one or more of the following: ▸▸ repetitive overuse of particular muscles ▸▸ sudden overdemand of underprepared muscles ▸▸ poor or high-risk technique. OVERUSE Unlike many sports, golf involves a specific, consistent, unilateral action. Beginners and experienced golfers alike often suffer from repetitive strain and microtrauma associated with performing the same golf swing, using the same side of the body innumerable times over the course of a game, tournament or practice. One of the common mistakes we all make is failing to read or choosing to ignore the warning signs that the body has had enough: muscle stiffness, tenderness, pain upon movement or stretch, and so on. If you feel these warning signs, postpone the game for another day. OVERDEMAND Speed and power are essential components of the golf swing. Many golf injuries occur because key muscles are asked to perform maximally when they are unprepared to do so. These muscles may be already irritated from repetitive strain, being inadequately warmed-up, or otherwise weak, tight, shortened or fatigued. The result is the same: muscle strains, protective spasms, “locked” spinal joints. POOR TECHNIQUE In an attempt to drive the ball farther, many golfers use enormous backswings, trunk rotations and follow-throughs. They do so at their peril. The typical golf swing subjects the lumbar spine to 98% of its maximum rotation, and an incredible 100% of its maximum lateral flexion. X-ray studies have shown the long-term result is significant degenerative changes, predominantly right-sided, in the lumbar spines of most seasoned golfers. Many golf injuries can be avoided, and your game improved, by observing these rules: 1.  Warm-up properly before playing. This means raise your heart-rate, increase circulation in the major muscle groups, and then gently stretch. Get Loose! 2.  Prepare your body for golf season. Learn the “Super Six” golf stretches and make them part of your life! Develop better abdominal strength. Get Fit! 3.  Ensure the key muscle groups and joints of your spine and pelvis are healthy and functioning optimally. Your chiropractor specializes in assessment and correction of muscle and joint function. Get Checked! 4.  Practice and perfect low-risk golf technique. This is as simple as reducing your backswing and follow-through 25%, minimizing trunk rotation by keeping your hips/shoulders parallel, avoiding lateral bending, especially during followthrough, bending the knees when addressing the ball, and maintaining tight abdominal control during the power portion of the swing. Get Trained! 5.  Listen to your body! Get Smart!

Attention: Moderation Is the Best Approach to Cosmetic Surgery VIAGRA & CIALIS Users BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. oo much of a good thing is not always the best. Moderation in life results in the ideal balance in many facets of our lives. This holds true for cosmetic surgery as well. From non-invasive treatments to plastic surgery procedures, moderation is the approach I feel yields the best long-term aesthetic results. We have all seen it – from celebrities to people in our local community. The “overdone” “overfilled” or excessively pulled face that resembles an aquatic animal or alien life form more than a natural aesthetic enhanced face or body. The most common mistake is the over injected face and mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles, the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless mask-like face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants or oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend to any individual who is considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure to consult with a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) organization, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery, with documented experience prior to proceeding. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. PET CARE

What Should I Consider Before Getting a Puppy? BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM

W

hile a puppy can tug at anyone’s heartstrings, choosing a puppy should be more than an emotional decision. All too often, the cute and cuddly puppy that is purchased on impulse is relinquished to a shelter because it grew up to be a large, rambunctious dog. That’s why it pays to do your homework before you even look at a puppy. Start by researching the kind of adult dog that will be most compatible with your lifestyle. A book on dog breeds is a good starting place, but also ask veterinarians for their suggestions. They are very familiar with the different dog breeds and suitability for each home. You can also visit dog shows to see many different breeds at once and talk with dog breeders and trainers. Consider the size of the adult dog and how it would fit into your household. Would you prefer a lap dog or do you have room for a large dog? Research the exercise and grooming requirements of different breeds. Some breeds, such as herding dogs, require more exercise and may be best suited for someone who is looking

90 DECEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY WESTON |OURCITYMEDIA.COM

for a jogging partner. Other breeds need regular grooming, so you will need to plan for those expenses. Where Should I Look for a Puppy? If you prefer a purebred dog, ask veterinarians and breed clubs for advice on how to locate a reputable breeder. You’ll want to interview several breeders and ask to see the puppy’s parents and the breeding facility, if possible. It is important to visit the facility to ensure that a limited number of puppies are raised in a sanitary, well-socialized environment. When buying a purebred dog, it’s worth the effort to find a reputable breeder.

How Do I Check a Puppy’s Physical Health? Most breeders and some shelters will provide you with paperwork that the puppy has been exam-

ined by a veterinarian, has been checked/treated for parasites, and has received at least the first round of vaccines. Many breeders may also provide you with a health guarantee. A healthy puppy should: appear alert and energetic, not lethargic (tired); be well fed, with a little fat covering the ribcage; have a good coat, without dry, flaky skin or bald patches; walk and run normally, without limping; have no discharge from the eyes, nose, or ears; follow a tossed toy with its eyes; not cough, sneeze, or appear to have difficulty breathing; and turn to look at you when you clap or make a noise behind it. Puppies should be comfortable when handled. Try holding the puppy and touching the ears, mouth, and paws. If the puppy becomes aggressive or struggles to get away, it might not be the kind of dog who will snuggle with you on the couch or allow you to trim its nails. Choosing a healthy puppy with a good disposition will increase your chances of raising a dog that will be a great fit for your household and your best friend for years to come. n Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Get Protection and Peace of Mind at South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind protection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range. The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting system which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques. Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are gun ranges and stores frequently

dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy. How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper targets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a background in programming. We leveraged his expertise to make shooting more exciting through technology. Thus, our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, was born. You shoot

your actual gun and real ammo at interactive video targets, like zombie games, skill drills, asteroids, etc. The computer provides instant feedback, scoring and analyzing each shot. We also have a standard paper target range for those that prefer a traditional experience. Seems like a great partnership. Was it just you and your brother that started Nexus? Our third partner, Christopher Longsworth, brought the final piece of the puzzle with his background in real estate development and architecture. All the projects in his portfolio are highly regarded as being at the cutting edge of modern architecture, such as Strata at Plantation, and Koi Marina and Residences in Pompano. It was through his vision that the striking architectural design of the building and high-end retail showroom came to fruition. Our guests call our showroom the “Apple Store” or “Guggenheim Museum” of gun stores

because of the spacious, clean and welcoming environment. What else distinguishes Nexus? It’s really the experience we offer. Shooting is the “new bowling”, a family friendly activity. We’re not here to just sell guns. Nexus is the only five-star range in South Florida rated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. We received this prestigious award by providing an unparalleled shooting and shopping experience, as well as superb customer service. We carry one of the largest inventories in the country with thousands of guns in stock. We also have hundreds of rental guns, so you can try before you buy. Our training program is also extremely comprehensive. Our instructors can train anyone including someone who has never touched a gun before to experienced shooters, security personnel, and even law enforcement. We focus on the needs of female shooters too. Half of our staff is female, including our store manager. We have female instructors also. Nexus seems very high end. Is it expensive to shoot there? That’s a common misconception. Even though we are a five-star range and offer the highest level of amenities and quality, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. It’s like driving a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota! n Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. Hours of operation are MondayFriday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm. For more information, please call 954-587-8005; send an email to info@nexusshooting.com or visit www.NexusShooting.com.
