Hurricane Season is Here Again
2
017 was, by far, the costliest hurricane season in United States history. More than $282 billion of damages were caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Many of us in South Florida are still feeling the impacts of Hurricane Irma. The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, especially in Puerto Rico, will have long consequences. Fortunately, 2018 is expected to be less active than 2017. Colorado State University hurricane researchers predict the 2018 hurricane season to be slightly more active than normal, with a predicted 14 named storms in the Atlantic basin. This is a far cry from last year’s two and half times more active environment.
It Only Takes One Storm According to the Tropical Cyclone Landfall Probabilities tool developed by researchers from Bridgewater State University and Colorado State, Broward County has about a 35% chance of having a hurricane make landfall this year and about a one in five chance of a major hurricane making landfall. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ▸▸ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ▸▸ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information and water. ▸▸ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in the case you lose power and water supply. ▸▸ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer.

Gecko ParX Brings the Next Generation of Indoor Entertainment to South Florida BY STACEY BOMSER
G
ecko ParX appeals to the young and the young at heart. The 40,000 square-foot indoor entertainment center caters to children of all ages, families and corporate clients. From fun family outings and children’s birthday parties to conferences and team-building retreats, Gecko ParX is unlike any other venue. Founder John Duran explains more about the Gecko ParX concept and what you can expect to find there. What is Gecko ParX? We are South Florida’s newest indoor entertainment venue where you can jump, play, practice, compete and, most importantly, have fun. Gecko ParX offers 40,000 square-feet of exciting attractions including a trampoline court with interlocking trampolines, basketball slam dunk courts, ropes courses, dodgeball courts, an American Ninja course, parkour, rock climbing, multi-attraction pit for jousting and slackline, a children’s soft play area, and much more. In addition, we offer an arcade with state-of-the-art games, café, and seven private party rooms offering 180-degree waterfront views. It’s truly an unbelievable experience. Please describe the facility. Gecko ParX was created for all demographics, including all ages and genders. It is a heart-pounding experience for clients who enjoy physical activities and want to participate in our ten different attractions. There is also a mezzanine deck created exclusively for adults who want to enjoy a more relaxed ambiance. They can plug in a laptop, relax with a beer or glass of wine, and watch the jumpers enjoy the attractions. The mezzanine area not only provides a panoramic view of the entire facility, but it also accommodates massage chairs and relaxing mood lighting below the deck. Gecko ParX was custom designed so all ages can enjoy this one-of-a-kind facility. How was Gecko ParX designed for different demographics? My main purpose in creating this concept was to create a place for everyone to enjoy. Gecko ParX offers a soft play area for toddlers, as well as ten actionpacked attractions designed for kids, teens and adults.
18 JUNE 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM
There is even an area that turns into a dance floor with a live DJ, ideal for our teen socials as well as private functions. The mezzanine deck, complete with massage chairs and bar stools overlooking the facility, is the perfect place for adults to relax and unwind. What is your background? I have 25 years of experience as an owner/operator in the family entertainment industry. I was the cofounder of Riptide Entertainment, which owned and operated several Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museums. I also sit on the advisory boards of multiple companies within the family entertainment and technology sectors. My years of experience and passion for family entertainment motivated me to open Gecko ParX, a venue that appeals to all ages where the entire family can enjoy time together. How do you ensure customer safety? Safety is a top priority at Gecko ParX. Our welltrained staff supervise each section of the facility to provide assistance on how to properly use the attractions in a safe manner. Each staff member has received crowd management training and is specifically trained and certified for each attraction. The trampoline and soft play equipment are top of the line and made in the United States under strict quality standards. We adhere to a 250 pound per person weight limit to utilize our attractions. In addition, all participants must complete a waiver. Why should someone host their next event or party at Gecko ParX? This facility was created to host top-shelf events and parties. Our seven, oversized private party rooms, with 180-degree water views, make Gecko ParX stand out from all other venues. The space is set up for mixed usage, as it can host a child’s birthday party as well as corporate events. The modern layout, with its diverse and pleasant ambiance, can accommodate events ranging from ten to more than 500 guests. Gecko ParX takes pride in providing the highest level of customer satisfaction. Our event planner’s unparalleled sense of urgency and diligence, coupled with our party hosts’ customer service skills, ensure all events are a success and all guests have the best time possible. What types of party or group packages do you offer? Whether you are celebrating a Sweet 16, graduation, or any other event, we can customize a package just for you. Birthday party packages start at just $350
and include one hour of jump time plus 45-minutes in a private party room. Gecko ParX provides pizza and unlimited water and soda. Our party host will take care of all the details, including all set-up and clean-up. We also offer customized packages for corporate events and special occasions. Besides the attractions, what types of programs do you offer? We offer ninja training classes taught by Julio Santiago, who was featured on the TV show American Ninja Warrior. We also provide personal training in parkour. Other programs include Mommy & Me, for mothers or caregivers with children from six-months to three years of age, and Tumble Tots. These professionally designed classes will help stimulate and encourage babies and toddlers to use all their senses while playing, exploring, crawling and learning in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. In addition, we offer a variety of evening programs for older kids. On Parents Night Out, we offer three hours of full activities and supervised fun for children ages six to twelve. We also host Teen Socials on select Friday nights for ages 13 to 18. Teens can enjoy access to all the attractions plus dancing with a live DJ. How much does Gecko ParX cost? We offer a variety of passes and promotions. The onehour pass offers access to seven attractions (trampoline, dodgeball, basketball, ninja course, parkour, slackline and jousting) for $19.99, while the two-hour pass is only $24.99. A rock climbing pass is $4.99, while the ropes course pass is $9.99. Our Ultimate Pass, for $45.99, offers two-hours of access to all nine attractions, as well as a $10 arcade card. For little ones, under 42-inches, we offer an all-day soft play pass for only $9.99. Be sure to check out our website, www. GeckoParx.com/tickets, for special promotions. What is the significance of the name Gecko ParX? When my family moved to South Florida from San Francisco two years ago, I was astonished by the many different types of reptiles we encountered. So, when brainstorming a name for the business, I thought of Gecko ParX. n Gecko ParX is conveniently located at 3305 Corporate Avenue in Weston, between Royal Palm Boulevard and Griffin Road. Gecko ParX is open every day except Monday. It offers daytime and evening hours; 10-11am is reserved for children less than 42 inches tall. For more information visit www. GeckoParX.com or call 954-526-8180.

Weston will be United by Freedom at 4th of July Hometown Parade BY STACEY BOMSER
I
ndependence Day is the time to celebrate America’s freedom, so what better theme for this year’s City of Weston 4th of July Hometown Parade than United by Freedom. “Weston is a true melting pot with people having come here from all over the world,” explains Director of Parks and Recreation Don Decker, whose department coordinates the City’s 4th of July festivities. “While we have many things that differentiate us such as language, faith, culture and so forth, the one thing that really unites us all is the freedom promised by this great nation.” City leaders hope the United by Freedom theme will bring the community together and remind people to appreciate where we live. “There are a lot of people who have come here from somewhere less free, and they have a unique perspective on the freedom that someone like me, born and raised in the United States, may take for granted,” shares Decker. Weston’s annual 4th of July Hometown Parade begins at 10:30am at Weston Town Center. Decker
says the event usually attracts about 3,000 spectators. He recommends people arrive early to secure a spot along the parade route, which starts on Three Village Road just north of the Town Center Publix and

marches through the streets of Weston Town Center. Parade watchers should bring their own chairs. Everyone is invited to enjoy the parade, either as a viewer or participant. Decker expects about 50 groups, including elected leaders, civic organizations, local businesses, bands, schools, entertainers, and more to march. Entry is free. To download a parade application, go to www.westonfl.org/media/docs/ misc/2018_July-4th_Parade_Application.pdf. The deadline to register is June 22nd.
“I think people are just as proud of the groups they are involved with here as they are of the community itself,” notes Decker. “I love seeing the same faces year in and year out. Even in the heat and humidity of a Florida summer day, the joy on display makes everyone feel great.” CBS 4 Meteorologist Craig Setzer will be this year’s Grand Marshal. Decker says Weston typically tries to select a resident who is known either for their celebrity or good work for this role. “This year, Mr. Setzer is both. He is not only a recognized Weston resident, but he is also a true hometown hero as one of a handful of local meteorologists who helped South Florida prepare for and ride out Hurricane Irma.” Prior to the parade will be Weston’s 4th of July Hometown Celebration 5K Run/Walk sponsored by the Weston YMCA. The race begins at 7am at Weston Regional Park. Visit www.Westonfl.org/Parks for race details and registration information. For more information on the City of Weston 4th of July Hometown Celebration, visit www.westonfl.org or call 954-389-4321.

Weston University Students Conduct Simulated City Commission Meeting BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he final assignment for the Weston University program was the ultimate group project. Students had to put their knowledge to the test by conducting a simulated City Commission meeting. It was the culminating activity for the seven-month program which provides high school students with a hands-on education in local government. “Throughout the program, the students learn about and experience the various city departments and services, as well as the role of the City Commission which enacts the laws of the City, adopts the budget under which each department functions, and establishes the policies by which Weston is governed,” explains Denise Barrett-Miller, Weston’s Director of Communications and Weston University coordinator. “The Commission Simulation exercise brings all of that together. Students present and/or defend their side of several real agenda issues, gaining a truer understanding of
each role of government.” Elected officials along with dedicated city staff guided the students through a simulated agenda which included items taken from actual City Commission meetings. Each student was assigned a role to play, ranging from Mayor to Police Chief. Student Mayor Anjou Sharma called the meeting to order and moved through the mock agenda, which took place in the Commission Chambers at City Hall. Barrett-Miller says the City Commissioners and
staff were thoroughly impressed by their student counterparts’ knowledge, interest and desire to role play. She says it’s rewarding for the “teachers” to see how the students have absorbed the lessons conveyed throughout the program.

“By participating in the Weston University program, everyone involved gains such satisfaction and reward by departing our knowledge and passion for government and exposing students to the various career opportunities they might have otherwise overlooked in public service,” notes Barrett-Miller. Weston University is a one-of-a-kind program providing a unique civic education to high school students. It is open to Weston students attending Cypress Bay High School, Western High School, The Sagemont School, as well as home schooled students. Applications for the Weston U Class of 2019 will be available at the start of the school year. he Weston University program concluded with a one-day field trip to our nation’s capital. A few drizzles did not dampen the spirits of the group, which included the Weston University students accompanied by Mayor Daniel Stermer, City Commissioner Byron Jaffe, City Manager John R. Flint, Director of Landscaping Thad Bielecki, Director of Communications Denise Barrett-Miller, Assistant Director of Communications Pamela Solomon, and Communications Staff Assistant Daniela Cediel. During the whirlwind trip to Washington D.C., Weston University students and City leaders toured the U.S. Capitol Building, visited almost all of the monuments at the National Mall, and posed for pictures in front of the White House. The group even had the chance to meet Senator Bill Nelson. Prior to the trip, students were provided with key
facts about each location and its significance in history. “The Weston University curriculum studies local and state government, as well as the legislative and financial impacts of the federal government, culminating with this trip to our nation’s capital,” explains Denise Barrett-Miller, Director of Communications and Weston University Organizer. “During this trip, students are able to personally see where the legislation of our country takes place, as well as the monuments dedicated to and in honor of individuals and those who served in wars that shaped our nation.” Weston University is a one-of-a-kind program providing a unique civic education to high school students. Over the course of the school year, students spend time interacting with city leaders and participating in hands-on activities while exploring the various departments and agencies that make up our local government.

What Today’s Buyers Are Facing BY PHYLLIS SCARBERRY
W
hether you are a buyer searching for your first home, or a homeowner looking to move up to your next home, you should pay attention to rising interest rates, decreasing inventories and increasing home prices. Rising Interest Rates. In 2018, (due to the research of Freddie Mac), rates have increased from 3.95% in the first week of January to 4.40% for the first week of April. With rates increasing, a buyer should take advantage of today’s lower rates! Experts believe that rates will continue to rise throughout the year and are expected to rise to about 4.48% by June. That average climbs to 4.73% by the end of this 2018. How Could Rising Rates Affect You as a Buyer. Waiting until the end of the year to buy, with rates still projected to increase, will end up costing more money on your monthly mortgage payment. For every $250,000 you need to borrow, you will spend $49.21 more per month, $590.52 per year, and over $17,700 by the end of your 30-year mortgage. Decreasing Inventories and Increasing Home Prices. There exists a myth that an increase in mortgage rates will cause a slowdown in home sales which would, in turn, lead to a fall in house values. Increasing home prices are determined by supply and demand. Rising mortgage rates may slow demand and, thus, affect supply. A Buyer Needs a Real Estate Professional. As a professional, I am faced with questions regarding why a buyer would need me. Here are one dozen reasons: 1. Understanding the process. There are essential steps to a successful closing. They include a fully executed contract with all important facets initialed; buyer applying for the loan timely with the contract deadlines; lender deadlines met according to TRID; buyer purchasing insurance with the binder in place by closing; loan approval; walk-through and signing off; review of the Closing Disclosure and/or HUD; title company’s involvement and advising of the wiring of funds; handing over of keys, clickers and keys to the clubhouse; registration with the water company as well as other local utilities; registration with the HOA or COA. 2. Pointing out the “not-so-obvious” features regarding the property. 3. Negotiating better contract terms. 4. Providing buyers with “tried and true” service vendors. 5. Improving knowledge of the areas – so a buyer makes an informed decision about where to live, work and play. 6. Obtaining knowledge of home values and how to calculate them. 7. Providing education as to the market. 8. Addressing challenges that may arise. 9. Overcoming objections. 10. Possessing effective negotiation skills. 11. Planning strategically. A plan, a timeline, and the setting of expectations. 12. Being a trusted advisor for new construction. With rising interest rates, decreasing inventories and increasing home prices, a buyer would best hire a Real Estate professional because working with a professional costs a buyer NOTHING. Buyers and sellers should work with a professional with knowledge of the area and the market as well as a proven track record for success. Phyllis M. Hurricane Preparedness BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK
I
t is now time to begin Hurricane Preparation Procedures for the current Storm season. My primary concern is for the safety of you and your family. Please review the information below, check your hurricane disaster supplies, replace and restock if necessary and stay informed. My second concern is the protection your home. Please follow the recommended procedures below to secure your home, protect your personal property and prepare for evacuation if required. Remember, prepara-
tion is the key to safety.
Some Suggested Preparations before the Storm:
▸▸ Go to http://www.broward.org/Hurricane to review the Broward County Preparedness web page. ▸▸ Secure and/or bring in all exterior furniture. All loose objects which can be picked up by the wind should be picked up and brought in. ▸▸ Close and secure your windows, doors and hurricane shutters. ▸▸ Secure and park your vehicle(s) in the garage, driveway and/or assigned parking space(s) only. ▸▸ Fuel up your vehicles and propane tanks; obtain fuel for generators. ▸▸ 48 hours prior to storm landfall, turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting. Keep the door(s)/drawer(s) closed as much as possible to keep the cold air in. Freeze plastic jugs and/or cartons of water. ▸▸ Clean bathtub(s), containers, etc. and fill with water. If the storm becomes a serious hurricane the water supply system may lose pressure and/or be cut off completely. If this is the case, water stored in bathtubs, containers, etc. should be used for washing and flushing of toilets. ▸▸ Make sure to stock up on bottled drinking water. ▸▸ Make sure to keep charged all personal devices. ▸▸ Turn off propane tanks. Unplug all appliances and electronics. ▸▸ Ensure all important paperwork and valuables are placed in safekeeping. ▸▸ If you evacuate, please notify your family/friends when you arrive at your storm-safe location.
Some Recommended Hurricane Supplies:
▸▸ Water – at least 5 day supply, one gallon per person per day ▸▸ Food – at least 5 day supply of non-perishable, easy to prepare items ▸▸ Medical items – hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, etc. ▸▸ Baby supplies – bottles, formula, baby food, medication, diapers, etc. ▸▸ Pet supplies – food, medication, leash, collar, carrier, etc. ▸▸ Flashlight(s) and extra batteries ▸▸ Sanitation and personal hygiene items ▸▸ Battery-powered/hand crank radio ▸▸ First aid kit ▸▸ Medications – at least 7 day supply ▸▸ Multi-purpose tools ▸▸ Extra cash ▸▸ Family and emergency contact information ▸▸ Insect repellent and sunscreen ▸▸ Extra batteries and phone/tablet/laptop chargers. ▸▸ Extra blankets, rain gear, hat, sturdy shoes, etc. ▸▸ Copies of personal documents (medication list, pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passport(s), birth certificate(s), insurance policies, etc.) ▸▸ Tools/supplies for securing home (plastic, rags, large garbage bags, zip lock bags, waterproof portable container with lid, etc.) ▸▸ Cleaning supplies – stock up on personal care and cleaning items

ost people do not know how much difference a closed door can make in reducing the spread of a fire in your home or business. The pace at which fires race through a home has increased at a deadly rate. Newer furnishings, combined with the prevalence of open floor plans and new construction materials, all contribute to fires spreading faster than ever before. Smoke from these fires also becomes toxic much more quickly. This all leads to giving you and your family less time to get out of the home when a fire occurs. Today, a person has about three minutes to escape a house fire. Compare that to the homes of 40 years ago, when people had about 17 minutes to escape a fire. Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) Firefighter Safety Research Institute began researching the effects of doors and windows on a fire’s spread in 2008. They tested bedroom fires on the first and second floors in many different fire scenarios. Using thermal imaging cameras, researchers found that closed-door rooms on both floors during a fire’s spread had average temperatures of less than 100 degrees. Compare that to the over 1,000-degree temperatures recorded in open-door rooms. Gas concentrations were markedly different as well. The open-door bedrooms measured an extremely toxic 10,000 parts per million concentration of carbon monoxide, while the closed rooms measured approximately 100 parts per million. UL concluded that there is clearly a greater chance that someone could stay alive in a room with a closed door much longer than if the door was open. Closing your bedroom door at night will help keep you safe from fire and smoke. ▸▸ It will stop the fire from growing and spreading by reducing the amount of oxygen the fire has access to. ▸▸ It will help keep smoke and heat out of the bedroom, if the fire is located elsewhere in the house. ▸▸ It will help keep your home and your belongings safe. ▸▸ It will help keep the temperature down, making the room more survivable. Many people believe that opening doors and windows during a fire will allow the smoke to escape. That is true. But, you are also letting air in, and that is what feeds the fire. With access to more air and oxygen, the fire can grow quickly. By closing doors and windows, you are reducing the available oxygen. The fire’s growth and intensity will slow accordingly, giving your family more time to escape. The Firefighter Safety Research Institute recommends that you close all the doors in your home when you sleep. Fire does not sleep. About half of home fires are reported between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM, when most people are sleeping. Additionally, the Institute recommends closing the doors as you leave the building to escape a fire. Closing the doors will cut off the fire’s oxygen supply and may stop the fire’s growth. Take the “Close Before You Doze” pledge. Something as simple as closing your home’s doors can give you that extra time you need to escape a home fire and may save your life. For more information, please contact District Chief Bruce Angier at Fire Station 81 at 954-3892015 or by email at bruce_angier@sheriff.org.

hen it comes to the local residential real estate market, “Nobody knows Weston” like Rose and Dean Sklar. In fact, that’s the couple’s motto. They know this city because they live and work here, and it is this first-hand knowledge that has led the dynamic duo to be the top producing realtors in town for the past ten consecutive years. Rose Sklar answered some commonly asked questions about how the Rose & Dean Sklar Real Estate Team can help you with your buying or selling needs. How would you describe your business? 38 JUNE 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM
Your motto is “Nobody Knows Weston Like We Do!” What is the significance of this? We decided early on to focus our efforts on a niche market. There can only be one market leader in any field and we feel that our consistent proven results speak volumes to not only our love for the City of Weston, but to our loyal customers and repeat referrals, that we know this market so well. We love the slogan so much, we actually had it trademarked years ago. Why is this community so important to you? We’re passionate about selling Weston because it’s our home. We raised our kids here – both of whom were able to go to A-rated public schools. We believe in giving back and are both very active in the community. We support Cypress Bay High School as sponsors and with college scholarship donations. We hold a special place in our hearts for the arts, and I am now serving as Vice President of Ways and Means for the Weston Philharmonic Society. Dean coached YMCA sports when our kids were younger. In addition, we donate a portion of sales to the Coldwell Banker Cares Foundation. What services does The Sklar Team offer buyers? We offer our buyers years of experience, expertise and results. Whether writing a contract or negotiating a deal, our clients can always count on superior service and dedication. We listen, we return calls, we stay in touch. We provide thorough market analysis and consulting to our buyer clients. We maintain a large database of floor plans of every subdivision in Weston. We have closed thousands of homes throughout Broward County and are familiar
with many neighborhoods, along with all the lifestyles and amenities that go with them. We leverage our widespread connections and resources to solve any issues from recommending a contractor to hiring an interior decorator. What services do you offer sellers? Visual is the name of the game in real estate. We provide professional photography and innovative social media marketing to showcase your home in the best light. Aerial shots, videos, print advertising and impactful copy are all tools at our disposal to maximize results. Through Coldwell Banker we have access to 925 websites with international reach. We price to generate the most interest, most offers and, ultimately, most money for your listing. We leverage our elite status and expansive network to host exclusive, invitation-only broker opens, attended by a select group of top Broward and Dade realtors. What types of marketing support do you offer clients? We craft a unique strategy for all of our properties. Our aggressive marketing platform includes social media, landing pages, strategically-placed Facebook ads coupled with old-school magazine and direct mail advertising. Using thorough research and consideration of market trends, we direct our marketing dollar with a focus on finding the ideal buyer for the listing. In addition, our team of professional stagers prepare proposals to help make the home look its best, including complete revamping to minimal “face-lift” staging, all designed to net the best return on investment. You and Dean are partners in business and life. How do you make that work? Ours is a true love story that turned into a business success story. Dean and I are high school sweethearts who are now celebrating 30 years of marriage. We fell in love back in 1981 and our love and respect for one another has grown stronger every year. No matter what we do or where we go, you will see us together – best friends for life and it clearly shows. At our recent awards ceremony, our Managing Broker Terri Bersach said it best, “Rose and Dean are one of the most successful couples I know in business and in life.” What is The Sklar Team’s story? We formed our team back in 2001 when we moved to Florida from New Jersey. We have always believed that the secret
Weston – Rose & Dean Sklar to success is surrounding yourself with professionals and providing the best possible service to clients. We are pleased to work with Transaction Coordinator Diane Pernetti, Client Care Coordinator Elizabeth Frongello, Social Media/Marketing Coordinator Martha Castro, Staging Consultant Jill Gold, as well as many talented mortgage and title representatives, home inspectors, painters and exclusive buyers’ agents. What’s next for you? We have always believed in the old Arvida saying, “It’s all here in your hometown.” Our community, Weston, is going through a transition, with many of the original residents, like ourselves, now becoming empty nesters. We understand the interest in a more walkable lifestyle or vertical living. Many couples want to move East toward the beach and we can help them find a new home to start the next chapter of their lives. At the same time, we continue to grow our business here in Weston with a focus on the millennial generation of buyers and sellers, introducing them to our amazing hometown. What are your greatest accomplishments? With 20 years of experience in South Florida, Dean and I have ranked consistently as #1 in Weston for units and sales volume for the past ten consecutive years. We rank in the top less than one-half percent of all NRT Coldwell Banker agents in the nation. For the third consecutive year, The Sklar Team has achieved the coveted Society of Excellence Award. Only 17 teams nationally, out of 91,000 realtors, have achieved this stellar status. In 2017 we were recognized as the #5 Coldwell Banker Team in Residential Rentals in the Nation. Other accolades include The Florida 100 since 2006 and the Legends Society designation from 2010-2015. Personally, I was selected to be a member of the prestigious Master Brokers Forum, consisting of the top performing agents in Broward, Dade and Palm Beach County. We attribute it all to hard work, honesty and integrity, always with a personal touch. n The Rose & Dean Sklar Real Estate Team is part of Coldwell Banker Weston. Their office is at 2690 Weston Road, Suite 100. For more information call 954-298-3626, visit www.EastMeetsWest.info, or email Rose@ SklarTeam.com.

Cypress Bay Visual Arts Students Receive Scholarships BY STACEY BOMSER
T
wo Cypress Bay High School seniors, Naomi Lopez and Hannah Rothbard, were among the 30 Broward County Schools’ students to be honored at the 19th annual Stars on Parade extravaganza at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The program, which included student performances, honored the Arts for the Future Scholarship recipients. The $1,000 scholarships will allow these talented students to continue their studies in the visual, performing and technical arts at colleges, universities and educational training institutions. The two Cypress Bay students were both recognized for their talents in the visual arts. Naomi Lopez says the arts have had a positive effect on her life. “Art has helped me through many tough situations, especially in the last year. After contracting a parasite in my left cornea, I turned to photography to both express myself and distract myself from the rest of the world. Seeing my work come to life before my eyes always seems to calm me down and allows me to collect my thoughts. After overthinking everything all day, being

able to create art has always been the highlight of every day.” Naomi will attend Florida State University. Hannah Rothbard says art has not just influenced her life, it is her life. “Not only has art been a lifelong passion, but it has been my emotional outlet and source of personal growth. Making art has taught me the value of hard work, as I am constantly pushing myself to grow as an artist. The arts have also enriched my life with culture and served as inspiration. What I find most intriguing is the role of artists in social movements. I aspire to make impactful art like the artists I have studied.” Hannah will attend NYU. Arts for the Future is the largest arts scholarship program in Florida and one of the largest programs of its kind in the nation. It was created in 1999 as a collaborative community-wide initiative to promote artistic career opportunities for graduating seniors. To date, Arts for the Future has bestowed $912,000 in scholarships to more than 880 talented Broward County Public Schools students. Thirty students from ten schools were named 2018 Arts for the Future Scholarship winners.
Cypress Bay Student’s Surreal Artwork on Display at Dali Museum BY STACEY BOMSER
C
ongratulations to Alyssa Alim. The Cypress Bay High School junior’s piece, Exchanging Lives, was accepted into The Dali Museum Student Surrealist Art Exhibit. Her work will be on display at the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg through August 26th. Alyssa says she was totally shocked to learn her artwork was selected for the prestigious exhibit. “It means a lot to me to be chosen for this,” she explains. “I am excited to use my art to show people how I feel and get them to really appreciate it.” The exhibit features surreal work by middle school and high school students throughout the state whose visions and ideas are similar to those of Dali and other surrealists. “The surreal genre is basically using something Alyssa Alim that is real and mixing it up and changing it however you want to make it look unrealistic, but cool at the same time,” explains 42 JUNE 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM
Alyssa. “I like how expressive surrealistic art is and how you can mix things up in your own way without following any types of rules.” That’s exactly what Alyssa did with Exchanging Lives. “My piece has a pair of hands trying to escape a television while birds are trying to get into the television,” she shares. “This shows how we try to escape reality and try to be someone we are really not to make life easier. When the person in the television can’t get out, it’s showing how difficult it really is to be someone different and to try to change our own ways.” Exchanging Lives was created using digital art, but Alyssa also studies sketching and drawing. “I take two other art classes other than my photo class, those being 2-D Art 3 and 3-D Art 2,” she states. “I prefer drawing, so I never would have thought that one of my photo pieces would win an award.”
Exchanging Lives by Alyssa Alim
Alyssa hopes to attend the awards reception later this month at The Dali Museum. Twelve awards will be presented in the high school category. Judging is based on originality, skill/technique, expression, and theme. “The Marvelous, the Fantastic & the Grotesque” is the theme of The Dali Museum’s Student Surrealist Art Exhibit. Alyssa believes her work falls into “the Fantastic genre because it does have an illusion to it, meaning that you can’t tell whether or not if it’s real.”
Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. he public is generally aware of osteoporosis, a bone disease caused by loss of bone mass and weakened bone structure, which can lead to an increased risk of fracture. One in two women over the age of 50 will have a fracture resulting from osteoporosis in their lifetime. Early detection of osteoporosis is important, as it can be treated satisfactorily today, and in most cases, progression can be slowed or stopped. There are many causes or “risk factors” for osteoporosis. These include older age, low bone density, low calcium and vitamin D intake, cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol intake, inactive lifestyle and frequent falls, as well as a parent with a hip fracture. Certain medications such as steroids and thyroid replacement are also risk factors. Diagnosis of osteoporosis is made by history of fracture without much trauma (a “fragility” fracture) or a bone density test showing low calcium in bones. People over the age of 60 should know their “T-Score” as well as they know their cholesterol number.

There are, however, several misconceptions regarding osteoporosis: 1. O steoporosis is a cause of back pain. Actually, osteoporosis is a “silent” disease that causes no symptoms until a fracture occurs due to soft bone. The fracture is the cause of symptoms. 2. O steoporosis does not occur as long as calcium and vitamin D are taken in sufficient amounts. It can and does occur in this setting which is why a bone density is necessary for diagnosis. 3. O steoporosis only occurs in women. Not true! It is fairly common in elderly men, especially those with risk factors. 4. Bones are not living tissue. Actually, your bones are alive and constantly changing. There are cells in bone that remove old bone and produce new bone. It is usually an imbalance between these cells that causes osteoporosis and is a rationale for current therapy of this disorder. So, if you have any of the above risk factors, it would be a very good idea to speak to your physician to see if you are a candidate for a bone density test. There are very effective types of treatment today, for both prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. or the culminating activity in a lesson on community helpers, Kindergarten Dual Language Teacher Laura Pantin transformed her Gator Run Elementary classroom into a “hospital” with students playing the roles of “doctor”. The pint-sized physicians had to help save a “patient” by performing specific phonics-related “operations” in Spanish. Dressed in a lab coat, mask, cap and gloves, the doctors rotated around the room from patient to patient completing the phonics activities. A heartrate monitor played in the background to enhance the hospital atmosphere. “Each table in my classroom was set-up with a patient and the phonics activity they would need to complete in order to help the patient feel better,” explains Ms. Pantin. “The activities were each focused on specific Spanish phonics skills we have been learning throughout the year. For the first patient, students had
rectly. For the fourth patient, the students had to decide whether the word had two, three or four syllables. Finally, for the fifth patient, the students needed to find the ending syllable that completed the word.” Ms. Pantin says she was impressed with how the children were engaged in the activity and working hard at each table. “They were sounding out the
words and applying the strategies we’ve been working on all year, like clapping out words to see how many syllables it has or reading a sentence with a sight word to see if it makes sense.” She encouraged the students to work together, explaining that doctors work together to tie the lesson back to the community helpers unit. The class also learned about teachers, veterinarians, firefighters, chefs and police. Ms. Pantin says she was impressed with her students’ performance in the phonics hospital. “Sometimes teaching the Spanish side can be difficult because there are less resources, which is why implementing a project like this not only is great academically but shows how fun learning a second language can be. It also showed my students how much they have already learned in just one school year.” This is the third year of Gator Run Elementary School’s Dual Language program.

We will have a farmers market for our Gen Ed buddies where we will practice having jobs that provide goods and services.” Mrs. Gaskill says her students have enjoyed this project, especially seeing the fruits of their labor grow. The children take turns watering the plants every other day and measure their growth each week. While some bunnies helped themselves to most of the radishes, the class was able to harvest a few, as well as peas and carrots. “No one wanted the peas, but we all tried them,” shares Mrs. Gaskill. “I think it was more amazing for the parents to see their child go through the process. We picked, cleaned and shelled.” Mrs. Gaskill thanks “Grandpa Peter” for his assistance with this project. The longtime volunteer at Manatee Bay helped the class set up and care for the vegetable garden. He even came during Spring Break to water the plants.

Everglades Elementary First Graders Honor First Responders
BY STACEY BOMSER
L
aw enforcement officers and first responders dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our community. As a show of thanks for their service, first graders at Everglades Elementary School created gift baskets for these hometown heroes. “We were teaching our students about being a good citizen in our Social Studies unit,” explains First Grade Team Leader Mara Miller. “Our students were learning about service projects and we wanted the concept to really sink in for them. We decided to give them a hands-on opportunity to participate in a service project of their own.” Each class made a gift basket, filled with spe-
cially selected candy each symbolizing a different trait possessed by first responders. For example, there were Lifesavers because they help save lives, Peppermint Patties to help them keep their cool in every situation, and Mounds for the mounds of courage they possess. The gift baskets also included letters from the children. “The kids thanked the first responders for all of their hard work, for keeping us safe at school and at home, and for being brave,” shared Mrs. Miller. “They also asked questions about their jobs and a few even commented about wanting to be a first responder when they grow up.” The gift baskets were donated to Weston’s School
Resource Officers and their BSO colleagues, along with the firefighters and EMTs at a fire station near the school. Mrs. Miller says the officers were all thankful for the precious notes and generous gifts from the students. She says the students also gained from this experience. The service project taught the first graders a very valuable lesson about the importance of giving back to their community. Teacher Marcy Winer agreed, adding, “Children need to learn to be compassionate and to have a big heart for others. It is our belief that we need to teach these young children to choose kindness in all aspects of life.”

Cypress Bay Students Support Dance Marathon BY STACEY BOMSER

ore than 250 students took part in Cypress Bay High School’s third annual Dance Marathon. The event, which is organized by the Student Government Association (SGA), raises money and awareness for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. This year, it raised nearly $12,000 for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. “Dance Marathon has been a longstanding tradition at many colleges, including two of the biggest ones at FSU and UF,” states Katherine Gibson, Cypress Bay SGA Vice President and Dance Marathon Chair. “In 2015, Cypress Bay decided to start this tradition at our own school on a smaller scale. We were inspired by these colleges and knew that our SGA was large enough and dedicated enough to pull off this event.” Cypress Bay was the first high school in Broward County to put on a Dance Marathon, but the fundraiser has spread to other schools. raise awareness for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals and the children who are not lucky enough to be able to stand, dance, or do anything that normal kids like us can do.” In addition to dancing, participants enjoyed activities, performers, food, and hearing inspirational stories about the children they are helping. “We were contacted by a local patient named Luna who sent us a video of her saying, ‘Thank you Cypress Bay!’ and explaining how the money we raise will help kids like her to have a chance at having a future,” explains Katherine. “As typical high school students, we don’t realize how lucky we are to be able to walk and go to school and get so used to our daily routines that we forget to pause and be thankful for these blessings.” While Katherine is graduating this year, she says the Cypress Bay SGA has big plans for the future of its Dance Marathon. “We would love to get the Weston community more involved. This could include more fundraising in elementary and middle schools and promotion at community events. We don’t want Dance Marathon to be known as a ‘SGA project,’ but rather a project where all Cypress Bay students and citizens of Weston feel involved in making a change in the lives of these hospitalized children.”
Cypress Bay’s Harvest Drive Gala Honors Broward County’s Achievements BY JESSIE CHAIET, STUDENT WRITER

Sophomore Andie Galpern, who was the event co-chair with junior Madison Liebman, said it was important to acknowledge people who participated in the Harvest Drive in November. “There are certain people in the community – students, teachers and people from companies – who helped out a lot, so we wanted to recognize them with awards,” Galpern said. “They put so much hard work into this, so it’s important for them to be recognized and given all of the credit they deserve for it.” SGA invited students, teachers and administrators from all schools in Broward County who participated in the Harvest Drive as well as business partners and Harvest Drive board members. Renee Herman, Harvest Drive founder, said she was extremely happy to attend the event and speak about Broward County’s accomplishments in the drive. “I’m honored, I’m overwhelmed and I’m extremely proud of the students here at Cypress Bay,” Herman said. “We’re so proud of our students all over the 60 JUNE 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM

Imagine Charter School Students Put Math Skills to the Test BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents from Imagine Charter School at Weston put their math skills to the test at Publix Math Night, completing a scavenger hunt throughout the grocery store. “The scavenger hunt is designed to give students the opportunity to apply their math skills to real-world situations,” stated Fourth Grade Teacher Gina Asada, who collaborated on this event with Fifth Grade Teacher Lorena Najera. “For example, some questions have students weighing and calculating the price of produce, while others have students planning a meal within a budget.” Because the activities were tailored to different age groups, Imagine Charter School held two separate events – one night for kindergarten through second grade students and a second night for third through fifth graders. Many families with children in both age ranges participated both days. “Students were given an activity sheet when they arrived. Questions dealt with everything from finding objects that matched a certain geometric shape to planning meals within a specified budget,” explained Ms. Asada. “Some other activities had students pro-rating items such as eggs, by dividing the total cost by the number of eggs in a carton.” For some of the questions, students needed to use addition skills to find the answer. For example, “What three products can you buy to make breakfast if you only have ten dollars? What items would you purchase and what is the total amount you would spend?” Geometry knowledge was tested in other questions such as, “Find an item in the store that has a shape of a rectangular prism. What is the name of it?”
64 JUNE 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM
According to Ms. Asada, it’s important to show students how what they are learning in class can be applied to the real world. “Students are always wondering how math skills taught in school can be used in real life and Publix Math Night gives them a hands-on opportunity to see how. Additionally, it is our responsibility as teachers to ensure that our students are able to transfer what they learn in our classrooms to everyday life.”

Indian Trace Elementary’s Science Lab Boosts Knowledge and Test Scores BY STACEY BOMSER
I
ndian Trace Elementary School reopened its Science Lab two years ago with the hypothesis that increased hands-on science lessons would boost students’ FCAT Science Scores and that theory has proven true. “Last year we saw a seven-percentage point increase in Science FCAT scores and we are confident that our science scores will continue to increase,” stated Principal Amy Winder. The Science Lab is used by all students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The school does not have a science teacher, rather a teacher assistant works closely with all the teachers as they plan their lessons based on the Florida Science Standards. This model allows teachers to help students make connections to their reading and class discussions by conducting hands-on experiments. “She sets up the lab for each grade level with all of the materials they need, and classes go with their teachers to do hands-on lessons to apply the skills they learn in the classroom,” explained Principal Winder. “It is the perfect extension and application for the knowledge they are learning from their classroom studies.” Teachers can incorporate both STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and
Mathematics) in the lab. “Since writing in the content areas is so important, students
come to the lab with their science journals and write and draw their hypothesis, findings and diagrams as they go through the scientific process,” adds Principal Winder. Indian Trace Elementary’s Science Lab is quite impressive. It is equipped with thousands of dollars’ worth of science tools and supplies. “When a prospective parent visited our lab on a tour, she exclaimed that it was like ‘Harvard Elementary School!’” boasted Principal Winder. “She was impressed with the equipment and the interactions and discussions she witnessed as the students worked collaboratively in the Science Lab.”
Food for Thought at Gator Run Elementary BY STACEY BOMSER
A
s part of its Awesome Me curriculum, students at Gator Run Elementary School are learning to practice mindful eating. “Mindful eating is the practice of cultivating an open-minded awareness of how the food we choose to eat affects one’s body, feelings, mind, and all that is around us,” explains Awesome Me Teacher Rebeca M. Rivera-Castro. “In simpler words, it means to pay attention with all of our senses in the moment that we are eating.” Certified Health Coach and Gator Run Parent Ime Lizarraga taught the mindful eating class. She explained how a mindful eating practice can impact overall health by creating a deeper connection with our food. “During class, the kids got to experience mindful eating with an apple. After learning about the life cycle of an apple, each of them received an apple to hold while guided through an exercise in which they were called on to use their five main senses,” states Mrs. Rivera-Castro. “Mrs. Lizarraga explained to the kids that one way to think of mindful eating is to imagine themselves as being

scientists. She instructed them to give their full attention to the whole experience, from observing the appearance of the apple, feeling it, touching it, smelling it, hearing it, to eventually eating it slowly and carefully to fully experience its various flavors.” According to Mrs. RiveraCastro, the students thoroughly enjoyed the lesson. “Most of the kids were able to notice how much more enjoyable and meaningful the whole experience of eating an apple could be just by doing it more mindfully.” Mindful eating offers many benefits to children such as: enhances natural curiosity and promotes
engaging with food in a healthy and fun way; encourages trying new things without fear; develops a sense of appreciation and gratitude for having food to eat; awakens a sense of discovery and exploration around food and where it comes from; and turns an ordinary task into an extraordinary adventure. In addition to mindful eating, students have learned to practice yoga and meditation as part of the Awesome Me program. “Being able to introduce these practices within the context of a public school setting is groundbreaking,” shares Mrs. Rivera-Castro. “The fact that so many kids now have an awareness and understanding of the value of mindfulness practices is what makes this initiative an outstanding accomplishment.”

tart modeling what you want your children to do. Parents must agree in advance to “agree to disagree” and resolve the differences they might have in front of the child, if they choose to argue in their presence. The child must see that parents can disagree, yet be respectful of each other. It’s important to model the behavior that we want to see in them and recognizing our mistakes is necessary. Children study their surroundings, test how far they can get away with behavior, and mimic what the adults are expressing around them. Children need constant direction and reminders of how mommy and daddy love them regardless of how the parents feel for each other in order to feel protected and loved. Our expert in education and preschool director, Ms. Molly Brousseau, believes “children are not given enough credit for what they truly understand. Even at an early age, you need to remember that the only knowledge the child is obtaining is that of what is shown to them.”

A great way to show children good behavior is to remain positive in both discipline and rewards and be clear in what you are asking from them. One specific way to do this is to create a behavior or reward chart. A behavior chart should give specific areas where the child’s behavior will be targeted, i.e. “The child will follow directions during meal time”, if this is something they are struggling with, or “The child will keep their hands to themselves at playtime”. A behavior chart can be used in both the home and in school and it is important that parents are utilizing their classroom teachers as support for behaviors that may be according at home. Children should be involved in the reward portion of the chart. They should be able to choose something they are “working” for both at home and in school that they want or desire. Giving them the choice allows them to feel responsible for the outcome; they know they only got to play with their favorite toy because they behaved during lunch. Rewards do not always have to be tangible items, but maybe, extra time at the park, a bike ride with mom/dad, or special weekend event. This allows for more of what I like to call “teachable” moments while modeling good behavior. Make expectations realistic. If a child is struggling with his behavior, a recognition of good behavior doesn’t need to wait until the end of the day. Also, they don’t need to lose what they have achieved if after mid-day the child’s behavior worsens. Remind him or her how well they did before and how you can work together to make the rest of day better. Falcon Cove PTA Provides Positive Messages to Students BY STACEY BOMSER
I
t’s no secret that middle school can be a trying time for some students. In effort to foster a more uplifting atmosphere, the Falcon Cove Middle School PTA has been painting inspirational messages in the school’s bathrooms. “At the beginning of the school year we started discussing a way to improve student morale,” explains PTA President Colleen Laurent. “As parents, we know middle school is a time of tremendous change in a child’s life. They go through many ups and downs. If they are upset over an argument with a friend or a bad test score, the kids may go to the restroom to cool off or even to cry. After the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, we were even more certain creating positive messages was important.” PTA Board Members and parent volunteers, under the guidance of lead artist Connie Hernandez
Tedeschi, have been busy painting uplifting messages in the boys’ and girls’ restrooms. Examples include, “Do the right thing, even when nobody is looking” and “We rise by lifting others” in the boys’ bathroom and “Throw kindness around like confetti” and “We get so worried about being pretty…let’s be pretty smart, pretty funny and pretty kind” in the girls’ bathroom. “We want our students to see positive messages throughout the day,” notes Laurent. “Little things to make them cheer up when they are feeling down.” In addition to the gender-specific quotes, the PTA is also planning Harry Potter themed restrooms as those quotes easily apply to all genders. The volunteer artists are also decorating the faculty restrooms with inspirational messages. This project has been a huge success. “Overall, the students have positively reacted to the message murals,” shares Laurent. “The very first day the quotes were all over the students’ social media.” Laurent says other schools are now considering adopting this project. “Gator Run is looking to start painting in the stairways. Are Your Hands Making You Look Older Than You Are? BY DR. TAMY M. FAIERMAN

hen it comes to anti-aging routines, many of us think first of treatments for the face and neck. But what about the hands? For better or worse, no body part reveals your age more plainly than the skin on your hands. The cumulative effects of UV sun damage, hard work, and exposure to the elements speed the aging process, leading to some of the unappealing qualities we associate with older hands – sunspots, prominent or protruding veins, and loose or wrinkled skin. Thankfully, today there are a number of non-invasive hand rejuvenation treatment options that can effectively reduce many of the telltale signs of aging hands. Topical Creams & Sunscreens: Protect hands and prevent further sun damage by using sunscreens or hand lotions daily. Look for natural, chemical-free and broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of at least 30 and which include other nourishing elements like Vitamins C and E. Remember: damaging UV rays can pass through car windows, so keep a travel size bottle of sunscreen in the car and apply before driving. You should also moisturize hands at night using a good anti-aging cream with retinol or peptides (as a general rule, anything you use on your face can also be used on your hands). Microdermabrasion: Address troublesome sunspots with microdermabrasion, a treatment that exfoliates the dull, outer layer of your skin to reveal the healthierlooking layer beneath. As a bonus, this process also triggers the body’s natural collagen production, helping to refresh the overall tone and texture of your skin. Chemical Peels: Peels are another good option when it comes to getting rid of irksome dark spots. In this treatment, layers of the chosen peel product are applied in specific concentrations in order to remove the upper layer of dry, dead skin, stimulating natural collagen production and revealing the deeper, healthier layers of skin underneath. Results are generally seen after two to four treatment sessions. Remember: skin may be sensitive to the sun after a chemical peel, so always apply a sunscreen with SPF following treatment. Lasers: Laser therapy can be used to treat unwanted pigment issues on the hands. Laser treatments on the hands will also trigger the body to produce more elastin and collagen – both of which are naturally found in younger skin. Fillers: Dermal fillers can be used to plump the hands in areas that have lost volume. (Radiesse is currently the only filler that is FDA-approved for use on the hands). Like microdermabrasion, peels, and IPL treatments, Radiesse will also stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. So take the time for self-care: today’s range of therapies and non-surgical treatment options make it easier than ever before to roll back the clock and maintain the appearance and health of your hands.

Playing Into The Wind BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL
T
Dean Sklar, PGA
he players who get it done in the wind are the ones who don’t try to fight it. They don’t swing harder or moan about bad luck. They focus on hitting the ball solidly, because a solid shot will fly true in a pretty stiff breeze, but a weak shot is hopeless. Controlling your ball flight is the key to good iron play, and if you ever want to be able to play well in the wind, you need to learn how to hit the ball relatively low. Sometimes referred to as punch shots, these low driving bullets cut through the wind and roll forever, and though they might seem like a difficult shot to pull off, all they require is a little bit of practice. Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1 – Club Down. The biggest mistake many golfers make when hitting a shot into the wind is swinging too hard. When you swing hard, you put more spin on the ball and the more spin your ball has on it, the more it will rise up into the air. Instead of taking a massive cut, take an extra club and swing easy. Your ball will have less spin and more distance. Step 2 – Play the Ball Back in Your Stance. There’s more than one way to hit a low-trajectory shot but the easiest method is to start by playing the ball back in your stance. The lower you want it to go, the farther back you play it. Many of the best ball strikers in the world suggest narrowing your stance a bit when trying to hit a punch shot but it’s not absolutely necessary. Step 3 – Take a Short Backswing. It’s virtually impossible to keep a ball low to the ground if you take a full swing. By making a short backswing, your wrists won’t fully hinge and you won’t hit down on the ball so much. Step 4 – Keep Your Hands Ahead of the Clubhead. If you want to have one swing thought when hitting a low punch shot, it’s to keep your hands as far ahead of the clubhead for as long as possible. By keeping your hands well ahead of the ball at impact, you’ll effectively de-loft the club, thus lowering the probability that your ball with shoot up into the air. Step 5 – Have an Abbreviated Follow Through. Having an abbreviated follow through is a product of trying to keep your hands ahead of the clubhead throughout the downswing and if you perform Step 4 correctly, Step 5 will happen naturally. It’s important to not stop (or slow down) your swing when hitting this shot. Let’s focus on playing into the wind, because that’s the shot that gets most golfers. Obviously, you want to keep the ball low to neutralize the conditions. Best advice? Take a couple extra clubs, and swing at 75 percent. Fast swings create more backspin and send the ball higher, so resist the urge to smash it. Play the ball an inch farther back than normal in your stance and squat a little at address for stability. Then make a three-quarter swing and try to stay more “on top of” the ball. Feel like your nose is ahead of the ball at impact, and your right hip and shoulder stay high through the strike. You’re hitting down on it, trapping it against the turf. Impingement Syndromes in Dancers BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
P
ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. physical therapy and a short course of anti-inflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. With proper treatment, prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. vidence shows that breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure that results in higher patient satisfaction with their breasts and enhanced psychological well-being. Despite this, an increasing number of women are electing to remove their breast implants. In 2017, more than 45,000 breast implant removal procedures were performed – a twenty percent increase over the previous three years. The impetus to undergo breast explantation is multi-factorial ranging from implant related complications like implant rupture, hardening (capsular contracture) or breast pain, to large breasts with size dissatisfaction to autoimmune symptoms which patient’s attribute to their breast implants. After the implant is removed, the breast can appear empty or “deflated.” To avoid this unaesthetic result, the breast can be lifted (mastopexy) and volume can be restored with the patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer) or by rearranging or reshaping the breast with adjacent breast tissue, a so-called augmentation. All these techniques have been shown to be successful in plastic surgical literature. When the implants are removed, patients are often pleased with the aesthetic outcome and report very high patient satisfaction rates. Additionally, in a Journal of Immunologic research in February 2017, it was noted that in numerous studies, patients with symptoms of breast pain, muscle aches, and fatigue had reduced symptoms once the implants and capsules were removed. In this same article, blood markers for autoimmune disease were unchanged after implant removal in the majority of patients. There is an extensive body of medical literature demonstrating that breast augmentation with both saline and silicone implants is safe without a direct link to autoimmune disease. The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a highly personal one, and therefore treatment options should be individualized based on each person’s unique aesthetic goals. If you are considering breast augmentation, a breast implant exchange or replacement, or implant removal, it is important to discuss your goals with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Revolutionary Lens Proven To Reduce Chronic Headaches BY DR. JANE THERRIEN
I
t’s never pleasant to experience a throbbing headache. Unfortunately for millions of people, it’s a frequent and sometimes everyday occurrence. One of the most common and least known causes of these headaches relates to how a person’s eyes work together. Our two eyes are meant to work as a team, and when the eyes don’t align properly, the work your brain does to compensate for this can cause headaches. Staring at a computer or a mobile device for several hours during the day makes the issue even more severe and painful. Current treatment of this type of headache consists mostly of over the counter medications, which are often times ineffective and can be dangerous with overuse. Recently, an exciting new therapeutic lens known as Neurolens has been
INVESTORS, SPONSORS & DONORS developed to safely and effectively treat these vision-related headaches. Neurolens technology diagnoses and corrects a misalignment of a patient’s binocular vision system. By correcting this misalignment, the visual system works much more efficiently, resulting in fewer symptoms and more comfortable vision. The results from this innovative technology have been amazing, with early studies finding a reduction in symptoms for nearly 90% of patients who have worn Neurolenses.
SUPPORT THE COMMUNTY UNIQUE EVENT VENUE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY
What Can Neurolens Help With? Neurolenses are worn by thousands of patients all over the country. They have been found to help with headaches, digital vision syndrome, dizziness and balance issues, dry eye sensation, neck and shoulder tension, eye fatigue, light sensitivity, and reading problems. The binocular vision system is extremely important in how a person functions, and if that system is not aligned properly, people will become symptomatic. Neurolenses are designed to correct this misalignment and safely and effectively eliminate these symptoms.
How Do I Know If My Vision Is Causing Me Headaches? The easiest way to find out if your headaches are vision-related is to schedule an appointment at Weston Family Eyecare. Dr. Therrien is the exclusive Neurolens provider in the state of Florida. You will be asked to answer a brief questionnaire to determine the extent of your symptoms. You will then be tested with the SightSync device, and a series of binocular vision tests are performed to determine if a misalignment exists in your visual system. At that point, Dr. Therrien will let you know if Neurolenses will help reduce your symptoms and lead to more comfortable vision. Because Neurolenses look just like any other glasses lenses, they can be put into any frame you prefer. Dr. Jane Therrien is currently the sole Neurolens provider in the state of Florida. For a consultation or more information, you can reach Dr. Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, or call 954-888-9393. IT IS THE POLICY OF THIS STATE TO ENCOURAGE THE PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF DISPUTES AND THE EARLY RESOLUTION OF PENDING LITIGATION THROUGH A VOLUNTARY SETTLEMENT PROCESS” The above quote is from the Florida Collaborative Law Process Act. It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique nonadversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation.” There are some definite rules that must be followed and not every case is suited for the collaborative process. “As part of this nonadversarial and voluntary resolution of disputes, lawyers who engage in the collaborative law process in a family law matter, and any other lawyers in that lawyer’s firm, may not afterwards represent any party in any related proceeding except to request that a court approve the settlement reached during the collaborative law process or in specified emergency situations in accordance with family law court rules.” As stated above, if for some reason the collaborative process “breaks down” and litigation becomes the only alternative, the collaborative attorney must withdraw from representing his/her client. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. The goal of the collaborative process is for both parties and their respective attorneys to act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances there are other “team members,” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and, therefore, the parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” on more than one occasion. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process; each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery; and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney,” there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. As in all matters of law, experience and training are always beneficial to a client. If you or anyone you know are interested in the Collaborative Process, please give my office a call. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Tips for a Pain Free Neck BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER
N
eck pain is a common reason people seek chiropractic care. Whether it is a stiffness, ache or sharp, debilitating pain, problems associated with the neck – which can include headache, arm/hand/ shoulder symptoms and upper back disorders – present a significant burden to our health care system, to our productivity, and to our lives. The causes of neck pain are numerous. Two factors, however, are by far the most prevalent: posture and spinal alignment. Fortunately, both of these factors can be improved with knowledge, commitment and chiropractic treatment. The following points may be useful in ensuring your neck remains pain-free: ▸▸ POSTURE: Optimum posture is where, when viewed from the side, the center of the ear lies directly over the midpoint of the shoulder. Viewed from the front, the head should not be tilted, shifted or rotated in relation to the rib cage. Optimum posture also involves having normal cervical, thoracic and lumbar curves. Your chiropractor can help to accurately assess your posture, and can give you specific exercises and suggestions to improve postural faults.
▸▸ ERGONOMICS: Ergonomics involves such things as how one sits or stands at work, at a desk, computer or while watching TV or reading. It can also include driving or sleeping positions. To minimize neck, shoulder and upper back fatigue, avoid prolonged positions where the head is tilted or pushed forward. Change positions and tasks regularly and often, choosing a new task or position that works the body the opposite way. Strive for correct, balanced posture while working, traveling, playing and sleeping. This means do not prop your head up with pillows when sleeping on your back. ▸▸ INJURY: Trauma to the neck must be treated appropriately, beginning with an accurate diagnosis. Accurate diagnosis of neck trauma, whether it was the result of a car accident, fall, sports or some other injury, should always include x-ray. X-ray is used to assess the structural condition of the spine, including the cervical curve. Abnormal curves in the cervical spine are major contributors to chronic neck pain, headache and other neck related problems. Chiropractic treatment has been shown to correct or improve abnormal spinal curves. ▸▸ STRESS: We all must deal with stress in our lives. How we deal with it determines the level of tension we feel, and this can play a significant role in whether or not we experience neck related symptoms. To help us cope with stress more effectively, several behavior or attitude adjustments may be beneficial. Exercise moderately for about 45 minutes every day. Make adequate sleep and a healthy diet priorities. Maintain balance in your life between work and play, and in your relationships. Keep life in perspective. See the lighter side of situations. Seek and express humor. For a consultation or more information, contact Dr. Rick Behar and Dr. Marc Browner at Windmill Health Center in Weston at 954-217-4881. They have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Contact the Weston location for more information.

Can Chewing Gum Prevent Cavities in Your Child? BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN
Your Family Deserves The
BEST
Technology... Value... TV!...
O
ver the last five decades, fluoride has been added to community water supplies across the country. As a result, we have seen a 50% reduction of cavities in these communities, as well as a 50% reduction in the dental healthcare costs for children. The numbers are even higher when its use is combined with proper diet, oral hygiene techniques, and use of topical fluorides. Still, the dental community searches for other methods of reducing the incidence of “caries” (cavities). Such a finding would be most helpful to those unable or unwilling to make use of fluoride. One of the more promising substances is xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute derived from agricultural products. It has been around since the 1960’s, but has not been tested for use in humans for the purpose of oral health until the 1990’s. Most of the studies use chewing gum as the delivery system of choice. Optimal results are gained with three daily uses. This dosing achieves a reduction in plaque formation, reduces acid production, and interferes with the production of the specific bacteria which initiate cavity formation. Cumulatively, these attributes result in cavity reduction. What seems most promising is the use of xylitol by new parents to reduce cavity formation in their newborns. Babies are not born with the bacteria which cause cavities. These bacteria are naturally transmitted to the mouth of a child by a parent or caregiver. This usually occurs through everyday contact such as sharing of food or blowing on a hot spoon. The use of xylitol has been shown to delay the transmission of some of the most deleterious bacteria and resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities for these children. In one particular study, xylitol chewing by mothers beginning three months after the delivery of a child for a period of two years resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities in the children till an average age of six years. Of course, with such positive results many new xylitol products have been launched into the marketplace. Companies are manufacturing a number of products such as mints, mouthwash and toothpaste. However, the only method of delivery clinically proven to have these effects is chewing gum. Personally, I can’t wait to bite into the first xylitol infused ice cream sundae! PET CARE
Summer and Your Dog BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM
D
ogs that spend most of their summer days inside are protected from many warm weather hazards, but only if the temperature inside the home remains within a healthy range. In an effort to reduce energy usage and costs, some pet owners shut off fans and air conditioning when they leave the house in the morning and turn them on when they return later in the day. However, when temperatures outside reach dangerous levels, temperatures inside the house can, too. Being shut inside a hot house can be deadly for your dog. Dogs can’t sweat; they rely heavily on panting to cool themselves off. When the temperature in the environment increases, panting becomes less effective. This means that your dog could be locked inside with minimal options for cooling down. Instead of turning off the air conditioner, try leaving it on a conservative but comfortable setting (perhaps 76°F) while you are out. Make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water and consider closing curtains to reduce the heating effects of sunlight through the windows. If there are parts of the house that are likely to be cooler, make sure your dog has access to those areas.
Warmer Temperatures and Heatstroke Sadly, heatstroke is a significant problem for dogs. Heatstroke occurs when the dog’s body temperature exceeds a healthy range, and it can be fatal. Heatstroke commonly occurs when dogs are locked inside a car. Just a few minutes in a car on a hot day (even with the windows cracked) can be deadly for a dog. Research has shown that on a partly cloudy 93°F day, a car can heat up to 120°F in just 15 minutes. Even cooler days can be deadly. A similar test conducted on a 71°F day determined that the temperature inside a car parked in the sun with the windows cracked open went up to 116°F in one hour. Never leave your dog in a car when the weather is warm. Heatstroke can also occur when dogs exercise in hot weather. When possible, try to avoid walking your dog during the heat of the day, and consider making walks shorter. Strenuous exercise should be skipped, or at least postponed until the cooler part of the day. If you must exercise with your dog, carry cool water and take frequent breaks. Before embarking on an exercise program with your dog, schedule an examination with your veterinarian. This can help identify any medical problems that may make it difficult or dangerous for your dog’s activity level to increase. Your veterinarian may also be able to recommend which exercises are best for your pet.
Seasonal Allergies Depending on where you live, warm weather can bring a variety of pollens and other allergens into your dog’s environment that are absent during the winter months. Dogs with seasonal allergies tend to become itchy (unlike humans, who develop runny eyes and sneezing). Itching can make your dog miserable. Sometimes the itching can become so severe that a dog can develop skin wounds, skin infections, and severe hair loss. If you think your dog may have a seasonal allergy, schedule a visit with your veterinarian. Medication can frequently help, and your veterinarian may recommend allergy testing to determine what your dog may be allergic to. he purpose of functional medicine is to find the root of disease and prevent future ailments. Because the focus is on prevention, food is a key component in leading a healthy, disease-free life. Many patients are overly aware of the link between nutrition and weight, but keep in mind we don’t eat foods just to regulate our weight; our food intake does so much more than that. Food is directly responsible for many of the processes that take place inside our bodies. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, nutrition plays a role in five out the 10 leading causes of death. Several scientific studies have associated high intake of fat, sodium, and sugar to disease and death. It is no secret that Type 2 Diabetes is on the rise and millions of Americans are on medicine to control high cholesterol. The basic macronutrients found in food are protein, carbohydrates and fats. Your body needs and utilizes these micronutrients for metabolic activity, energy production, hormone production and much more. These also add up to your daily calories and determine whether you maintain, gain or lose weight. In addition to macronutrients, your body absorbs micronutrients, which include vitamins and minerals, and we also need these to live and thrive. Not getting enough macro and micronutrients will cause nutritional deficiencies that can lead to serious illness. When it comes to weight loss, the equation is simple - calories in vs calories out. However, not all calories are created equal. It is possible for a person to consume an adequate number of calories to maintain or even lose weight, but this doesn’t mean the person is healthy or has adequate nutrition. If you eat a bag of chips a day, you will probably lose weight because you are on a caloric deficit, but are your nutritional needs being met? The answer is no. By the same token, it is possible for a person to consume excess calories and be overweight—this still doesn’t mean nutritional needs are being met. Food quality makes all the difference in the world. And whether you have a healthy weight or are obese, you may still be suffering from nutritional deficiencies. What’s also important to consider is that nutritional deficiencies do not happen from one day to the next. Chances are these have been developing over periods of time before you start to see the signs. Some common signs of nutritional deficiencies include: ▸▸ Fatigue ▸▸ Dry/Brittle skin ▸▸ Hair loss ▸▸ Diarrhea ▸▸ Constipation ▸▸ Dry/brittle and Ridged or spoonshaped nails ▸▸ Weak immune system ▸▸ Inability to focus ▸▸ Depression and anxiety The good news is that nutritional deficiencies can be corrected by implementing changes in your diet. Eating unprocessed foods - whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds - is a good way to start. In some cases, supplementation may be needed. At Bellissimo Medical, we can conduct specialized testing to determine if you are suffering from nutritional deficiencies or specific health issues in order to outline a customized treatment plan that is most likely to help you improve your health. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. ROTARY NEWS
Together, We Transform Lives BY PAT SHORT HORNSBY, ROTARIAN
O
ften, Rotarians are asked, “What is Rotary?” Rotary brings together leaders from all continents, cultures, and occupations to exchange ideas and take action for communities around the world. The Rotary Club of Weston is a diverse and dynamic group of over 120 local business and community leaders. They are your neighbors, customers, service providers and co-workers. They are men and women committed to making the world a better place, giving back and transforming lives. In the process, they also have a lot of fun and make a lot of friends. As the Rotary year comes to a close (it begins on July 1 and ends on June 30), it’s time to look back at some of the Rotary Club of Weston’s major accomplishments for 2017-2018. This year, Weston Rotarians have: ▸▸ Given in excess of $60,000.00 to The Rotary Foundation to support global humanitarian projects in Rotary’s six areas of focus — disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, and peace and conflict prevention/resolution ▸▸ Given almost $6,000 to Rotary’s PolioPlus initiative for the global eradication of polio ▸▸ Donated at least $20,000 and hundreds of volunteer hours to local charities, including Harvest Drive, LifeNet4Families and Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center ▸▸ Raised in excess of $20,000 for hurricane relief in the Florida Keys, Texas and Puerto Rico, and airlifted or transported over 10,000 bottles of water and other
92 JUNE 2018 | OURCITYWESTON.COM
essential relief supplies to Key West after Hurricane Irma ▸▸ Donated over $10,000 for literacy initiatives in Panama and Colombia, and clean water projects in Colombia ▸▸ Raised and awarded approximately $150,000 in college scholarships to deserving high school seniors graduating from local Weston area high schools None of this could happen without dedicated Rotary club leadership and a spirit of volunteerism. However, it truly does take a village. The Rotary Club of Weston would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the many local businesses, City of Weston, BSO, high school administrators, student volunteers and friends who have participated in and supported the club in its fundraising events and efforts. We applaud our city, Weston. Whether collecting badly needed items for soldiers or children, building a Habitat for Humanity home, planting trees or mentoring young people, the Rotary Club of Weston is always ready to lend a hand, find a solution and create opportunity. Together, Rotarians change lives. Do you have talents to lend and a desire to serve others? Come, visit the Rotary Club of Weston at their weekly breakfast meeting and learn about plans for 2018-2019. It promises to be a very good year. The Rotary Club of Weston meets Thursdays at 7:30am at the Weston Hills Country Club. For more information go to www.WestonRotary.com.
