espite the soaring temperatures and almost daily deluge of rain, summer is one of the best times to be in South Florida. The snowbirds have all flown home and now those of us who live here can enjoy endless miles of beautiful beaches, easy access to the region’s outstanding restaurants, and a chance to experience all the attractions our community has to offer. After all, there is a reason approximately 30 million tourists visit the tri-county area each year. Get in touch with nature with an airboat ride through the Everglades or charter a boat and go deep sea fishing. Take your taste buds on a journey every Monday night at the Food Trucks at Arts Park in Hollywood or sip and savor a cocktail while watching the sunset at one of the many beachfront bistros. Speaking of the beach, that’s a great place to beat the heat. Pack up the cooler with icy cold drinks and enjoy a day of sand and surf, just don’t forget the sunscreen. Water parks and indoor activity centers are another option for wholesome family fun. Whatever you choose to do this summer, enjoy yourself and stay safe. Remember it is hurricane season. Weston Philharmonic Society Brings Summerfest’s “The Shape of Music” to Town BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he Weston Philharmonic Society (WPS) has arranged for Weston to host the Symphony of the Americas’ Summerfest concert. “The Shape of Music” will take place on Thursday, July 19th at Temple Dor Dorim. The area’s proximity to the ocean and the Oscar-winning film, The Shape of Water, were the inspiration behind this year’s concert. Internationally-acclaimed musicians from around the world will join the principal musicians from the Symphony of the Americas for this unique cultural exchange. Under the baton of the Symphony’s artistic director, Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, the musicians will perform classical pieces by many of the masters such as Bach, Handel, and Mozart, as well as Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz, and Por Una Cabeza by the legendary Argentine singer-songwriter, Carlos Gardel. Concert soloists include Marco Key-Navarrete, on oboe, performing Handel’s Concerto for Oboe No. 3 in G Minor, David Pedraza, on viola, playing Bach’s Concerto for Viola in C Minor, and Orlando and Svetlana Forte, on violin, playing La Bella Cubano by Jose White. “This program promises a magical evening and follows our mission of bringing the finest music of
all genres to Weston,” states Weston Philharmonic Society Co-President Lou Marett. “The intimacy of this setting is unique and enhances the interaction among the audience, the musicians, and the music.” To further promote interaction between patrons and performers, there will be a dessert reception following the concert. “This gives our attendees a chance to enjoy a variety of delicious desserts and to meet with the visiting artists and the maestro, who provided us with a wonderful evening of music,” adds WPS Co-President Andrea Burghardt. Proceeds from the concert will go toward underwriting the Weston Philharmonic Society’s In-School Music and scholarship programs. According to Vice President of Ways and Means Rose Sklar, “Concert attendees will not only enjoy a very special concert, but also help pass on their love of music to future generations.” Each year, more than 6,000 students participate in the In-School Music program, which brings world-class musicians to Weston elementary schools. In addition, eight Class of 2018 graduates from Cypress Bay and Western High Schools will be able to continue their music studies in college thanks to generous scholarships provided by the Weston

Mayor Seeks to Educate Voters about Upcoming City Election BY STACEY BOMSER
E
lection Day may be months away, but Mayor Stermer is encouraging voters to educate themselves now about important issues that will be on the ballot come November 6th. That’s when registered voters will elect two City Commissioners and vote on two City Charter Amendments. Weston City Commission Seat 3 and Seat 4 will both be decided. Seat 3 is currently held by Commissioner Byron Jaffe, who was elected last year to fill the seat vacated by Jim Norton when he ran for Broward County Commissioner. Seat 4 is currently held by Commissioner Toby Feuer, who has served as a City Commissioner from 2010-2018. She is unable to run for re-election due to term limits. During the November election, Weston voters will decide on an amendment which proposes to eliminate term limits for the Mayor and City Commissioners. “To me, as an elected and as a voter, every election is a term limit for any elected and that elected can be voted out of office regardless of term limits. If the elected has not ‘connected’ with their community, then that community has every right to express their views at the ballot box,” states Weston Mayor
Daniel Stermer. “Currently I, along with Commissioner Kallman, are term limited in November 2020 and if our neighbors would like for us to remain, the only way that this could happen would be to change the City Charter in 2018. If not, our terms will end in 2020 and so will our current service.” The other question voters will answer is whether to change compensation for the Mayor and City Commissioners. The proposed amendment will increase salaries to $16,000 per year for the Mayor and $12,300 per year for Commissioners, effective December 1, 2018. The current salary is $13,000 for Mayor and $10,000 for Commissioners. “The last time a Charter Question regarding compensation was put on the ballot was ten years ago,” states Mayor Stermer. “The Weston City Commission annual compensation level is significantly lower than other cities in Broward and across South Florida. The increase sought is equal to what a Cost of Living Adjustment would be at 2% for the past ten years. Other jurisdictions provide compensation and a variety of other ‘benefits’ to their elected officials. I believe that one should want to serve their
community and should do so for the pleasure of serving as opposed to doing so for the compensation and benefits.” While there are only four local issues on the November ballot, Mayor Stermer says it is important to start educating Weston voters now, as the ballot will be lengthy with local, state and national elections as well as numerous amendments and school board questions. “The ballot is anticipated to be 13 pages long,” states Mayor Stermer. “In order to ensure that our neighbors know about and understand the City Charter Questions, we need to begin the process of informing and educating them on why they need to start at the BOTTOM of the ballot and start with the City Elections and then make their way to the top of the ballot. Your City Commission is the government closest to our friends and neighbors and we want to make sure that Weston residents express their thought through their votes in November and the only way to do so is to go through the entire ballot, starting at the BOTTOM and working up the ballot.”

Weston Community Center Promotes Active Bodies and Minds BY STACEY BOMSER

eat the heat this summer with programs at the Weston Community Center. There are activities for all ages and interests. Stave off the dreaded “summer slump” by enrolling children in an academic enrichment program. At Buildbots Robotics Camp, children can explore the magic of Lego® Robotics and apply that knowledge to design, build and program robots to solve amazing challenges. The program, for kids ages seven to 14, combines creativity, design, logic, teamwork, scalability, and problem-solving skills. The class meets July 16-20th and July 23-27th, with full-day or partial day options. For more information visit www. buildbots.com. The Chess Club meets every Monday from 4:455:45pm. Children, ages five to 18, will learn to play chess and develop memory, self-confidence, intuition, concentration, logical and critical thinking, and reasoning skills. Ages two to five will learn and practice Spanish in a playful, musical and artistic environment. The program is every Friday from 10-11am. It’s important that children keep their minds as well as their bodies active during the summer months. Kidokinetics is the “fun way to fitness.”

Children are introduced to a new activity each week in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere. Ages three to seven will develop important building blocks for life such as discipline, confidence, coordination, fine and gross motor skills, and fitness. The summer session runs Wednesday afternoons from July 25th through August 29th. For more information go to www.kidokinetics.com. The Kidokinetics Jr. program is designed for younger children and their parents or caregivers. These classes increase body awareness and help tod-
dlers learn coordination and balance. Ages 15 months to three years meet on Tuesday mornings from 10-10:45am from July 24th through August 28th. Children and adults can learn selfdefense and discipline in USA Goju Karate. Black belt instructors teach the basic principles of self-defense, fighting, weaponry and forms. Students may choose to attend either one or two classes per week. On Mondays, ages six to 12 meet from 6-7pm, and ages 13-18 and adults from 7-8:30pm. On Wednesdays, ages six to eight meet from 6-7pm, ages nine to 14 from 7-8pm, and ages 15-18 and adults from 8-9:30pm. For more information visit www.foxusagoju.com. For adults, free friendly games of bridge and mahjong take place each week at the community center. Open Bridge Play is Monday from 12:30-4pm and Wednesday and Fridays from 12:30-3:30pm. Weston Branch Library Rocks This Summer BY STACEY BOMSER

ibraries Rock! is the theme of Broward County Library’s Summer Learning Program. It offers plenty of free fun activities and learning opportunities for all ages. Learning and reading over the summer has been proven to help prevent summer learning loss. As children track their reading and attend library programs, they build skills that maintain or improve proficiency scores in reading, spelling, vocabulary, math and more. As adults read and enjoy the library events, they not only have fun and build skills, but also model good learning behaviors to children in the community. Participating in the program is simple. To register for Libraries Rock!, simply stop by the Weston Branch Library or register online at Broward.org/Library/ Summer. Participants can earn points by reading, writing reviews, attending library events, and completing activities. The more you participate, the better your chance of winning prizes such as tickets to local museums and attractions, Florida Panthers hockey tickets, and tablet computers. The Weston Branch Library has planned many special events for children on Saturday mornings, from 11am-12pm, to tie in with the Libraries Rock! theme. On July 7th, aspiring musicians can play a drum while learning about rhythms from
Africa, South America and the Caribbean at On the Go Music. The following week, kids can sing, shake and play along with Musician Noam Brown. He will bring his guitar and plenty of instruments for children to try, while enjoying a morning of singing, rhythm-making and creative movement during Kids’ Music Circle. Children will have a rockin’ good time with Geo Jane’s Dig into Adventures on July 21st. She will conduct a geological adventure full of stories, magic, comedy and audience participation. Marci Poppins presents Libraries Rock! on July 28th featuring magic and puppetry. On August 4th, children can get crafty at Make Instruments from Common Objects. Members of the South Florida Chamber Ensemble will teach kids about musical instruments from each continent. Then, children can make their own instruments and play along with the musicians. Little ones can take part in Zumbini - Music and Dance on August 11th. Babies and toddlers, ages one to three, and their
caregivers will learn, bond, and grow in this upbeat and happy, musical environment. All programs take place in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Weston Branch Library. There are plenty of programs for older children as well, including Make It and Take It Crafts on July 9th from 3-4pm, Lego Builders Club for elementary school students on July 23rd from 3-4pm, and Journal Making for teens on July 31st from 2-4pm. The Libraries Rock! Summer Learning Program is made possible by the Broward Public Library Foundation, Broward County Public Schools, Florida Panthers Foundation, and other sponsors. City Congratulates Weston University Class of 2018 Graduates BY STACEY BOMSER
C
ongratulations to the Weston University Program Class of 2018. Eighteen students were recognized for completing the unique civic education program offered by the City of Weston. The Mayor and Weston City Commissioners, along with School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson, were on hand for the graduation ceremony, which took place during a City Commission meeting. Weston University provides select high school students with an in-depth education on the functions of local government. Throughout the seven-month course, students met once a month for a full-day program that highlighted different aspects and characteristics of Weston’s governmental structure.

The program days included a focus on: local and state government; law enforcement services; community services and public works; fire and emergency medical services; development services including
planning and zoning as well as engineering; local government and finance, and technology services. The class also took a one-day field trip to Washington D.C. where they had the chance to meet Senator Bill Nelson, tour the Capitol Building, and visit the various monuments on the National Mall. The Weston University program concluded with a simulated City Commission meeting during which
students portrayed the various roles of city government, utilizing the knowledge they had gained throughout the program year to present and/or defend their side of several agenda issues. Weston University program coordinator Denise Barrett-Miller says she is extremely proud of the Class of 2018. “It was composed of 18 incredibly bright students who took their academic knowledge and unparalleled enthusiasm and inquisitiveness and applied it to Weston’s local government. Weston First Responder Named Firefighter/Paramedic of the Year BY STACEY BOMSER
W
e have a hero in our midst. BSO Weston Firefighter/ Paramedic Dean Moreno was presented the 2017 Sheriff’s Foundation Firefighter/Paramedic of the Year Award by the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County for his bravery and service during the mass shooting incident at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport last year. Firefighter Moreno was on duty and working an extra detail at the airport on January 6, 2017. He was conducting a “fire watch” in Terminal 3 when he observed approximately 100 panicked people running toward him. After making contact with some of them, he learned that there was an active shooter in Terminal 2. He immediately sprang into action. Firefighter Morena courageously Photos courtesy City of Weston. ran towards Terminal 2, where he came across a shooting victim with a wound to the arm. He made the initial notification to the communications center that there was an active shooter incident in progress at the airport and requested back-up. As people continued to stampede from the terminal, Firefighter Moreno continued to attend to the shooting victim.
After briefing his Battalion Chief, he grabbed a medical kit and began triaging additional shooting victims in Terminal 2. He remained at the airport, caring for the injured and uninjured alike until 9pm that evening. During the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County award ceremony, Firefighter Moreno was commended for his expedient actions and disregard for his personal safety. He acted selflessly and in the true spirit of fire service during that tragic event that killed five people and injured six others. Weston District Fire Chief Bruce Angier says he is proud to have Firefighter/Paramedic Moreno serve our community. “His courage that day embodies the spirit of the fire service. Dean demonstrated extreme bravery during a chaotic and dangerous situation. His selfless actions undoubtedly helped many, and he is well deserving of the Firefighter of the Year award.” As part of the award, the Sheriff’s Foundation made a $1,000 donation in Firefighter Moreno’s name to BSO Fire Rescue Cadet Post 777. Cadet Posts are for young men and women considering a career in fire rescue and emergency services.

Attracting Millennial Home Buyers BY ROSE SKLAR
A
s Weston ages and many original “Westonites” downsize, or say goodbye to their hometown, we now have a new target buyer -- the millennial. Millennials were born between 1982 to 2000, with the majority now out of college and entering the real world, beginning their careers, getting married, starting families and buying homes. Additionally, millennials are the most active online generation that ever lived. The key to attracting and selling to our new buyer pool is somewhat different from the Baby Boomer craze. Millennials grew up on the internet and on smart phones where they can look to easily navigate websites and user friendly smart phone compatible software. Mobile friendly is the key to this generation. Being that 85% of millennials are smartphone owners, a social media presence is vital to attracting these new buyers. They place high importance on reviews and quality content. Profiles on all social media platforms are critical for maximum visibility. They stay informed by searching and reading reviews and ratings, whether it be Zillow, Facebook, Yelp or others, and make some of life’s biggest decisions (i.e. buying a home) based on this information. Millennials identify with the people they trust and use social media to gauge their degree of comfort, and this includes when choosing a Realtor. The bottom line is people do business with people they like and these particular buyers search for open houses online, enjoy tweeting, spend countless hours on Instagram and IG Stories, Facebook live, YouTube and various other social platforms to aid them in finding the perfect home or real estate agent. Open lines of communication through multiple mediums is a major decision-making factor on who they decide to do business with. The more transparent, the better. While millennials appreciate texting and communicating through apps like Whats App and FB Messenger, they are still open to more traditional forms of communication when it comes to buying a home. Weston was awarded the Water Smart Weston designation by the Florida Department of Health for efforts in drowning prevention education, but education is an ongoing effort. hile the summer time can offer families much enjoyment, this time of the year historically presents dangers to our children that parents should be mindful of. Did you know that Florida loses more children under age five to drowning than any other state? According to the Florida Department of Health, there were 43 drowning deaths reported in Broward County in 2014, 11 of which were under the age of 14. In fact, drowning is the leading cause of death for infants and young children between the ages of one and four, and the secondleading cause of unintentional deaths in children aged one to 14 years. Statistics also show that a swimming pool is 14 times more likely than a motor vehicle to be involved in the death of a child age four and under. According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, most parents do not consider drowning a threat to their children. While we may think that these events only occur when “someone else” is watching our child, 70% of preschoolers who drown do so while in the care of one or both of their parents. These statistics highlight the dangers that we face during the summer when our children are more likely to be home or at a friend’s house, and outside around water. By following these simple safety tips we can help prevent this type of tragedy from occurring: ▸▸ NEVER leave children unsupervised in or around a body of water. Not even for a moment or to take a phone call! Children can drown in as little as two inches of water in less than one minute. ▸▸ If you are unable to find your child, check the pool first or body of water first! Drowning is a silent event and you will not be alerted. ▸▸ Install a self-closing gate around your pool. ▸▸ Alarm every door leading to water to alert you if a child has gone outside. ▸▸ Teach children water and swimming skills. The YMCA offers these types of swimming programs. ▸▸ During pool parties or family beach gatherings, designate an adult to watch the children. If this adult needs to leave, even for a moment, then this responsibility needs to be clearly delegated to another adult. ▸▸ Remove any toys that may attract children to the pool area. ▸▸ Keep lifesaving equipment (a pole, life preserver and rope) in the pool area. ▸▸ Do not rely on flotation devices to protect your children in the water. Nothing is better than supervision. ▸▸ Finally, take the time to learn CPR. We offer free CPR classes every month and the class only takes a few hours. Once this type of tragedy occurs, it’s too late to realize how vulnerable our children are or that we should have taken steps to prevent this from occurring. The time to act is now! Futball Fans Bond at AYSO’s Panini Trading Card Event BY STACEY BOMSER

IFA World Cup fever hit Weston hard with soccer fans of all ages gathering at Weston Regional Park to collect and trade FIFA World Cup by Panini collector cards. Alan Dagen, AYSO644 Regional Commissioner, arranged for the Panini bus to come to town. Children were able to make a personalized Panini player card and futball fans collected and traded stickers of their favorite players. Dagen says Panini trading cards are like baseball cards. “It’s a similar concept, but for World Cup players. You get a book which has a spot for every player on every national team playing in this year’s World Cup. The cards, actually stickers, will be a picture of the player. People collect the stickers with the goal to fill the book. Organizers say it was quite impressive to watch the children exhibit keen negotiating skills, noting this was a great way to bring the whole community together for a positive experience. “These types of events are fun and a healthy part of community involvement,” states AYSO Volunteer Coordinator Sandi Hoyos-Alfonso. “I am proud to be part of the AYSO, an organization that strives to bring the exciting sport of soccer into the community.” AYSO is a huge part of the Weston community, with about 3,500 families participating in the program. “AYSO is a national soccer organization which is premised on six philosophies, including positive coaching, player development, balanced teams, and everyone plays,” states Dagen. “There are over 500,000 players in AYSO nationally.” Weston AYSO offers programs for all ages. According to Dagen, “We start at two-yearsold in what we call Playground. ummer is the time for the best outdoor cooking, so it is no surprise July is National Grilling Month. When hosting cook-outs for friends and family this summer, it’s important to plan ahead to make sure that your gathering is not only fun, but safe. Propane gas, a popular fuel for grilling, is one of the cleanest burning of all alternative fuels and is completely safe when used correctly. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is responsible for the safety regulation of liquefied petroleum gas wherever it is stored, distributed, transported and used. Don’t let improperly prepared food ruin your summer. To keep you and your family safe while using your gas grill this summer, follow these general guidelines. ▸▸ Wash your hands. Use hand sanitizer when clean water isn’t readily available where you are grilling. ▸▸ Keep food cold until you are ready to put it on the grill. Letting food sit allows bacteria to grow. ▸▸ Don’t mix raw and cooked foods. Keep raw foods separate from each other. Once cooked, use a clean dish to place food on. The bacteria from the raw food will contaminate the freshly cooked meal. ▸▸ Keep hot food warm to at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit until ready to be placed in a cooler with ice or in a refrigerator to prevent bacteria growth. For salads and cooked foods, keep them chilled on ice. ▸▸ Always read and follow the grill manufacturer’s instructions, including lighting instructions, and keep written materials and manuals in a safe, accessible place. ▸▸ Check for leaks and loose connections before starting a grill by applying a leak detection solution or mixture of soap and water to hoses and connections. Escaping gas will create bubbles. ▸▸ Place the grill well away from structures, deck railings and overhanging branches. ▸▸ Never leave a grill unattended when in use. ▸▸ Make sure all grill burner controls are turned off and that the cylinder valve is closed when not in use. ▸▸ Make sure the grill is cool to the touch before covering it after use. ▸▸ Never store a propane cylinder indoors. ▸▸ Always use or store propane cylinders outdoors in an upright, vertical position. ▸▸ Do not smoke while handling a propane cylinder. ▸▸ Do not allow children to tamper or play with the cylinder or grill. ▸▸ Do not use, store or transport your cylinder where it would be exposed to high temperatures. Get outside and start the grill! Not only do you get to experience being outside in the sunshine while you cook, you also get to enjoy the health benefits that result from grilling your food. Remember: Not all grilled food is healthy. Adding toppings like sauces and butter increase calories and fat. Luckily, there are plenty of healthy grilling options that everyone can enjoy. o you know your child’s blood type? Do you know which medications your spouse takes and the dosages? Even if you know this information, would you remember it in the event of a medical emergency? Most likely, you would not. There is no need to remember if you take the time to fill out an EMS Go Packet. During an emergency, when seconds count, it is critical that important medical and legal information be readily available for fire fighters, paramedics and receiving hospital staff. Manatee Bay Student Puts His Heart Into Fundraising BY STACEY BOMSER
B
y all appearances, Shawn Moriarty is your typical ten-year-old boy. He plays Little League Baseball, and his favorite positions are pitcher, catcher and first baseman. He also likes to play roller hockey and football with his dad. This thrills his parents, who were originally told by doctors that Shawn would not have much of an active life because he was born with severe aortic stenosis. “I was born with a heart valve that wasn’t working right. It was a problem with my aortic valve,” explains the rising fifth grader at Manatee Bay Elementary School. “When I was one week old, I had my first heart surgery. When I was three years old, I had my major surgery. That saved me and let me be active, run around and play sports.” Now Shawn is doing what he can to help others by supporting the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser at his school. “I asked my family members and friends if they would like to donate, and I also had my mom post my fundraising page online to her Facebook account,” explains Shawn. “My favorite way to raise donations is by setting up a lem-

onade stand in my neighborhood. I do this every year with my mom and sister. A lot of cars stop to donate and are happy that we are doing this.” Shawn was the biggest fundraiser at his school, raising more than $700 of the $11,800 Manatee Bay collected this year. “I hope the money raised will help doctors find new ways to treat kids born with heart conditions like mine,” states Shawn. He says he was excited to see his heart surgeon, Dr. Redmond Burke from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, appear in the Jump Rope for Heart kick-off video. “He’s my hero, and I love that he has saved so many kid’s hearts like mine.” In addition to knowing he was helping save lives, Shawn says he was excited and proud of himself for being the school’s top fundraiser. For that, he earned the privilege of throwing 13 shaving cream pies. Students who collected at least $100 were able to throw a pie at the PTA President or one of the Specials teachers – and for every additional $50 in donations collected, students could throw another shaving cream pie. “The teachers got really messy, but I think they kinda liked it,” shares Shawn.
Cypress Bay Senior Pursues Path to Becoming a Physician BY STACEY BOMSER

elfless. Dedicated. Hardworking. Those are just some of the words used to describe rising Cypress Bay High School Senior Tiffany Goncalves. Those are also attributes of a good physician. Tiffany wants to be a doctor one day. To help prepare for that, she is participating in the Summer Scholar Program at Cleveland Clinic Florida, spending three weeks shadowing physicians. “Students are assigned a mentor and will have an invaluable experience in the hospital setting,” she states. “I am so thrilled and eager to learn!” After that program ends, Tiffany will shadow three local doctors at their practices – an obstetrician/ gynecologist, a pediatric and adolescent endocrinologist, and a gastroenterologist. In addition, she continues to volunteer at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. She’s been there almost two years, having racked up over 280 hours so far. In fact, she was presented the Michael Fux Center 2017 Outstanding Volunteer Award. Tiffany began as a volunteer at the Michael Fux Family Center, serving patients and their families, but is now volunteering in the Child Life Department, supporting children who come to the emergency department. “It’s more hands-on, where my responsibility will be focused on making the children a little more comfortable while they wait to be seen,” explains Tiffany. “As in any emergency department, I am sure I will see

Cypress Bay Student Earns Perfect Score on AP Computer Science Exam BY STACEY BOMSER
C
ongratulations to Angela Li. The rising junior at Cypress Bay High School earned a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Computer Science A exam. Not only did she receive the top score of 5 on this challenging assessment exam, but she was one of only 112 students worldwide to earn every point possible – that amounts to just 0.2% of all 2017 AP Computer Science A exam takers. Angela says she was shocked, yet thrilled, when she received the news. “The letter was completely unexpected, and it had arrived the day of my 16th birthday. I consider it the best birthday present I have ever received.” She credits her computer science teacher, Tiffani Slutsky, for her success. “She always encouraged me throughout the learning process and gave me extra work and was willing to help anyone anytime.” Mrs. Slutsky says she is proud of her “perfect” student. “I’ve

enjoyed teaching Angela the last two years. She has a great attitude towards learning, loves being challenged, and has an upbeat personality. Not only did she quickly learn how to code in Java and easily ace the AP Computer Science A test, she helped many of her peers learn the material.” Angela has now completed two computer science classes – AP Computer Science A and AICE Computer Science AS level. She plans on taking AICE Computer Science A-level and AP Computer Science Principles. She says she enjoys this subject because it teaches reasoning and critical thinking. “Coding logically and optimally gives a computer its own mind, which has always appealed to me. You have to approach problems creatively and then switch to thinking systematically while coding. It gives me creative output and freedom while still having concrete results.” In addition to taking the computer science courses, Angela has participated in multiple coding competitions. “Last year, I went to Code Quest at Lockheed Martin

and UCF’s High School Programming Tournament. This year, I went to FIU’s High School Programming Competition.” Although graduation is still two years away, Angela says her dream is to get accepted and graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “I would really like to study Computer Science and Engineering. I think statistics, molecular biology, and electrical engineering also sound very fun. As you can see, everything is still very uncertain.” One thing that is certain is that Angela is now part of an elite club of students who can say they earned a perfect score on an AP exam.

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. Six Weston Students Earn Prestigious National Merit Scholarships BY STACEY BOMSER

ix students from Weston are among the 2018 National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners. These highly gifted and talented students were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Ryan Bush, who will attend the University of Pennsylvania, Isabella Chiurillo, who will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Hannah Kang, who will attend the eight-year medical program at Case Western Reserve University, and Tyler Kotler, who will attend Washington University in Saint Louis. “We are very proud of the academic success of these outstanding students,” said Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie. “This recognition will broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of excellence.”

The National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors who evaluated the students’ academic record, including difficulty of subjects studied and grades earned, scores from two standardized exams, contributions
and leadership in school and community activities, as well as an essay written by the finalist and a recommendation written by a high school official. This year’s National Merit Scholarship program began in October 2016 when more than 1.6 million juniors Tyler Kotler from more than 22,000 high schools took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as the initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring students in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists. Four-thousand college-sponsored Merit Scholarships will also be presented. By the conclusion of this year’s competition, about 7,500 students will have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million.

Gator Run First Grade Families Experience Math Mania BY STACEY BOMSER
F
irst grade students at Gator Run Elementary School got a chance to show what they know during Math Mania. The first grade team started the event two years ago as a way for students to demonstrate to their parents the math skills they’ve learned throughout the school year. “It’s important for the children to show their parents what they’ve learned and take pride in that knowledge,” shares First Grade Teacher Jordan Goldberg. At Math Mania, students and parents rotated from station to station completing different math activities, with each center representing a different math standard. “As a team, we each took a math standard from our curriculum and created an active game,” explains First Grade Teacher Shannon Martinez. “We had a Place Value Relay where kids were given a number in tens and ones and had to run to a whiteboard and write their number and then run back to their line. We
had geoboards where students created shapes with rubber bands, a time game where they passed from clock to clock writing down the time, and a non-standard measurement game where they went on a scavenger hunt to measure different items with cubes.” Both teachers agree students prefer

While the children had a blast playing the games, the parents were impressed with their children’s knowledge. was hesitant about writing this article since it is supposed to be a positive parenting themed column and the subject is quite a scary one. But I couldn’t turn a blind eye on what the guest speaker spoke about at a women’s conference I attended recently. It is imperative that I use my voice, and this means of communication, to spread the word and shine the light on this fast-growing industry that surrounds us and our children and the vast, negative impact human trafficking is causing in our communities. Statistics demonstrate just about a three-fold increase of reported cases of human trafficking from 2012 to 2017, with Florida landing in third place for trafficking states in the country. There is no gender or age discrimination, with 70% of the reported cases being women and 50% being children, according to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center.

We need to start by educating ourselves about the issue in our community and be aware of our surroundings. Some of the signs experts ask us to look for to recognize and possibly save the life of a child that has fallen victim are the following: ▸▸ Children might exhibit signs of abuse, neglect, bruises, and welts. ▸▸ Children can be branded or tattooed. ▸▸ Children talking to much about sexual activity or about dating older people. This raises a red flag. ▸▸ Many of the children who have fallen victim to human trafficking are inconsistent with their stories and give scripted answers about their activities and whereabouts. What can we do to help our own children not fall victim to this kind of scheme? ▸▸ Listen to what your children are saying. ▸▸ Talk to your children about their surroundings, and the danger of trusting the wrong people (not always a stranger). ▸▸ Take the time to know their friends. ▸▸ Make them feel valued. Studies show that children with low self-esteem/selfworth are more vulnerable to sex exploitation and can easily fall victim to human trafficking by simply getting the attention that they lack at home or from loved ones. Knowledge is power and only when we come together as a community can we make the changes necessary to make a difference. Imagine Charter Second Graders Create Art Museum BY STACEY BOMSER
S
tudents in Solange Ventura’s second grade biliterate classes at Imagine Charter School at Weston have cultivated an appreciation for art. Throughout the school year, the children created works of art inspired by the world’s great masters. It was all on display at Ventura’s Museum of Art. The museum featured the students’ renditions of work by 13 artists. For example, they created giant flowers with water colors in the style of Georgia O’Keefe and used contact paper and tissue paper to create stained glass windows like Marc Chagall. The children used markers to create pop art like Romero Britta and used watercolors on canvas to create sunflowers like Vincent van Gogh. Other projects included Pablo Picasso cubism portraits with oil pastels and chalk ballerinas like Edgar Degas. “The students learned about each master artist’s life and unique style, what made them famous and why their style was so influential,” explains Ms. Ventura. “The students also had to choose an artist and complete a research project.
They included the artist’s life, friends, family, unique style and influence.” Each poster also featured pictures of five pieces of the artist’s work and a picture of the artist.
“It is important to expose students to art and the masters because everyone can find a style of art that they can identify with,” states Ms. Ventura. “In addition, knowing the struggles and/or upbringing of each artist helps students see a more intimate and personal side of the art. They don’t just see a canvas on a wall, they see a story, a struggle, a feeling.” This was the seventh year Ms. Ventura did this project. She says it’s something she and the students look forward to each year. “They learn so much information that they themselves are amazed by. They also mature in how they look at art and how it makes people feel. This project allows every child to express themselves in a different way and exposes them to cultures, history and experiences.” She says it’s amazing how this project affects the students and instills an appreciation of art. “Many of them travel to different countries and happily ask their parents to take them to art museums and this continues to enrich their view of art.” Ventura’s Museum of Art was attended by students, their parents and grandparents, Imagine Principal Laham, and other classes.

Symptoms include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Leg pain, especially at night, and premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers, is another symptom. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. It is occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain. Signs include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. Knock-Knees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination or when the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability. General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly occurs due to the deformity. Treatment begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination may be prescribed. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position may be needed. In most cases this will overnight correct the fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases, when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child. e all want to look beautiful and feel great, despite our age. All of us have various skin creams, hair products, and make-up that we use to maintain and often times enhance our beauty. Tips to Finding That Good Tempo in Your Golf Swing BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL
P
ractice sessions at the driving range are the best time to work on your swing tempo and try to find your perfect rhythm. When playing a round on the course, you have too many other things going on in your mind to really focus in on improving your tempo. Put in the work on the range, and let the results show themselves on the course. So, what does a good tempo feel like, and how do you achieve it? The best way to describe good tempo is having a rhythm in your swing that feels natural. You shouldn’t be ‘manufacturing’ or ‘faking’ your tempo – it should come naturally and be unique to you. In many Dean Sklar, PGA ways, your tempo should simply be how you would swing the club if you weren’t thinking about anything at all. When you can get out of your own head and just swing the club freely, that swing will represent your perfect tempo. This is why players who are struggling actually improve their swing when they give up and just swing what feels comfortable. Finding your tempo on the practice range is one thing – holding your tempo throughout the round is quite another. You will usually go through a range of emotions during a round of golf, including excitement, frustration, nerves, and more. All these emotions can take a toll on your tempo and cause you to get out of your normal rhythm. One of the things that separates good golfers from average ones is the ability to manage pressure and maintain a good tempo from the first hole to the last. We’re all too familiar with the fact that it is often the times when you are playing a good round, that a loss of tempo is likely to strike. As the round moves on and your score continues to look good, it is natural to get both excited and nervous. Each of those feelings can contribute to losing your tempo – and your swing as a result. This is why it is so hard to close out a good round on the golf course. When the round gets going well, and you start to think about the scores you could shoot, your tempo can desert you at exactly the wrong time. There are a few things you can do to try and deal with the pressure and hold onto your tempo until the round is over:

▸▸ Gain experience: The more rounds you play, the more comfortable you will become with feeling nervous and excited. Even if you fail at first in those situations, you will learn from your mistakes and be more likely to succeed in the future. ▸▸ Put away the scorecard: The less mental math you can do during the round, the better. s the summer sun heats up in South Florida, it’s important to protect your skin as much as possible. The harmful UVA and UVB rays from sun exposure accelerate the aging process in the skin resulting in hyperpigmentation, increased wrinkles, and most importantly, increased incidence of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer with more cases diagnosed each year in the United States than all other cancers combined. There are some misconceptions regarding sun expo-
sure and skin cancer. ▸▸ You can’t get a sunburn on a cloudy day. Clouds only block some of the harmful ultraviolet rays, so a sunburn is still possible. ▸▸ You can’t get skin cancer where the sun doesn’t shine. Skin cancer can appear anywhere on the body, including the hands and feet. ▸▸ Skin cancer only affects light-skinned people. Those who are fair, are at increased risk, but anyone can get skin cancer. ▸▸ Using a tanning bed occasionally is safe. The United States Department of Health and Human Services and World Health Organization have classified a tanning bed as a carcinogen and research suggests that even one session may increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Some sun exposure is essential to Vitamin D metabolism; however, excessive exposure or unprotected exposure can be very harmful. Sunscreen is the obvious first step in protecting your skin. Broad spectrum is best. The FDA requires sunscreen manufacturers to prove that sunscreens protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are the primary cause of sunburn as well as Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which can cause premature aging of the skin. Both types of rays have been associated with the development of skin cancer. Choose SPF, or sun protective factor, of 15 or greater. Sunscreen must be applied in adequate amounts to achieve the SPF rating on the label. The recommended amount is 2 mg./ cm² – roughly 1 shot glass or 2 tablespoons worth of sunscreen for face and body. Patients who are concerned about obtaining enough sun exposure to make Vitamin D should be aware that current research indicates that 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure to the mid-day sun, 3 times a week is sufficient to synthesize enough Vitamin D to meet our body’s needs. Additionally, remember to protect lips, wear sunglasses with UV protection and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Finally, it is important to get your skin checked periodically by a board-certified physician. Aging and Dry Eye BY DR. JANE THERRIEN

ry eye is a multifactorial disease impacting the ocular surface, whose symptoms include general discomfort and visual disturbance. Dry eye is diagnosed in approximately 3.2 million U.S. women and 1.7 million U.S. men older than 50 years of age. Dry eye rates increase with age, reaching the highest among women 75-79 years of age and men 80-84 years of age. Many patients with dry eye describe features of neuropathic pain, including spontaneous pain, hyperalgesia and allodynia, suggesting dysfunction of the ocular sensory apparatus, which likely impacts the lacrimal functional unit altering tear secretion. In the following sections we review how aging may impact the anatomical structures associated with dry eye. Among other factors, sensitization of the ocular sensory apparatus which occurs with aging is likely influenced by multiple environmental and genetic factors common to other chronic pain conditions and an important driver of ocular pain and dry eye symptoms with aging. The definition of dry eye is “a multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface”. Symptoms of dry eye are varied and include various descriptors of ocular pain (burning, aching, tender, sharp, shooting, dryness), visual dysfunction (unstable vision, glare), and tearing. Signs are varied and can include evidence of aqueous tear deficiency and/or evaporative dry eye. Patients with dry eye may have various levels of ocular sensory apparatus dysfunction and this dysfunction may explain the discrepancy between symptoms and signs of disease. Data supporting this idea includes the fact that many patients diagnosed with dry eye describe features of neuropathic pain, including spontaneous pain, dysesthesias (unpleasant, abnormal sensation such as characterizing ocular pain as hot-burning in nature), hyperalgesia (exaggerated pain response to suprathreshold noxious stimuli such as hypersensitivity to wind), and allodynia (pain in response to normally non-noxious stimuli such as sensitivity to light). These symptoms are likely due to alterations in function of the ocular sensory apparatus, which may loop back and affect the function of the LFU, with subsequent changes in basal and reflex tear secretion. Changes in the lacrimal gland (producer of the aqueous component of tears), meibomian glands (producers of the lipid component) and goblet cells (producers of the mucin component) have all been described with aging. Central nervous system changes are also known to occur with age, with decreased connectivity and network integrity noted in healthy older adults. With regards to the eye, changes in peripheral nerves due to age-related environmental stress and inflammation may propagate upwards and affect the function of the central aspect of the ocular sensory apparatus. In conclusion, sensitization of the ocular sensory apparatus is likely influenced by multiple environmental and genetic factors common to other chronic pain conditions and is likely an important driver of ocular pain and dry eye symptoms in the elderly but remains an understudied component of dry eye. New technology is needed to functionally assess the status of the ocular sensory apparatus and understand the impact of aging on dry eye. This information, combined with ocular surface measurements, will likely improve treatment, with a focus on agents that modulate ocular sensory apparatus function in appropriate individuals. n many instances, depending upon the complexity of a case, expert witnesses may be retained to assist in both the preparation and presentation of the evidence. It is impossible to structure a settlement if we are not aware of the actual values of certain assets. The actual value of the marital home or the family business are important factors which must be determined. Judges will not guess as to these values and web sites which estimate certain values are not dependable or even admissible in court. Each of these experts may render a differing opinion which would result in the Judge determining which of the expert’s testimony he/she will depend on. The opinion of an expert is not to be taken as absolute fact and therefore their opinions are subject to attack, just as like any other witness in court. The hope is that with proper preparation and a credible expert witness, the chances of a fair settlement is more likely. Of course, not all cases require the assistance of an expert. Often the issues in dispute can be resolved without their knowledge and expertise. As I have often stated, no two cases are the same and as such they cannot be treated in a similar manner. Early Orthodontic Treatment Low-Speed Whiplash Injuries BY DR. ALON GROSMAN

T
here is no doubt that the average age of orthodontic patients has lowered through the years. Just open a yearbook from the 50’s and 60’s and you will see many young adults wearing the stereotypical “train tracks” across their teeth. Movies have spoofed the usage of head gears during the high school years, which was common practice in that era. Braces have become smaller, sleeker, more colorful, and worn with pride by many preteens. For those of you who have young children at home, the main question is whether early treatment is right for your child. To best answer this question, it is first important to define some terms. When discussing “early treatment,” I personally prefer the term interceptive treatment. It has the connotation of catching something before it becomes a bigger problem. The more common and practical term is “Phased” orthodontic treatment. In this case, treatment done at an earlier age (usually between 6-9 years old) is referred to as Phase I. It is aimed at correction of habits, skeletal discrepancies, as well as severe abnormalities in dental eruption. The later treatment, Phase II, is usually done at around 11-13 years old in order to place all permanent teeth in an ideal position. I call it more practical because in most cases the second treatment is needed. The name serves as a reminder to the parents of this fact. Currently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the first orthodontic evaluation occur by age 7. Does this mean that all children require phased orthodontic treatment? Certainly not. The criteria for starting early treatment should be better or more predictable results. In my opinion, this is certainly the case when the upper jaw is too narrow and must be expanded, when upper front teeth are so protrusive (“buck”) that the incidence of trauma is much more likely (unless corrected), and cases of underbite (when the lower jaw is forward of the upper jaw). These treatments are “no brainers” for two reasons. The body of the younger patient is more amenable to these specific orthopedic (growth) corrections and statistically the preteen is more likely to traumatize a front tooth than at any other time. There are other times that treatment may be done for psychosocial reasons, as some children are very conscious of cosmetics. For those parents who are considering early treatment for their children, I recommend listening with an open mind. See if the reasons for starting treatment make sense to you. The rule of thumb would be “if it does not make sense, don’t do it! I find that most parents have a life philosophy which may make them either more or less open to preventative type treatments. As a parent, I find that I know what my child will be able to handle and be up to. Most importantly, if you decide as a family to start, have fun with it.
he term whiplash was first coined in 1928. Though primarily used to describe the type of injury suffered in rear-impact automobile accidents, over the years whiplash has also been used to refer to any neck injury caused by sudden motion of the head. Because of problems associated with the term whiplash, other phrases have emerged in recent years to try to better describe this type of injury, such as “cervical acceleration/deceleration (CAD) injury” and “cervical hyperextension/hyperflexion injury”. All these terms have short-comings, and as a result whiplash still remains an integral part of medical jargon. One of the most controversial issues in the study of whiplash – and one of profound interest to both the insurance and legal fields – revolves around injuries reportedly sustained in low speed rear-impact crashes. Can such collisions cause occupant injury? A study by Brault published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (1998) gives support to the claim soft tissue injury can occur as a result of low speed rear-impact collisions, despite the fact crash velocities are often so slow as to produce no damage to either vehicle.
In this study, human volunteer subjects underwent rear-impact collisions in which the crash velocities were set at 2.5 and 5 miles per hour. Of particular significance is these volunteers were first screened for any pre-existing spinal conditions, then seated in optimal positions with headrests positioned correctly, and finally were aware of the impending crash. In real-life accidents it is exceptionally rare to have all of these conditions in the occupant’s favor. For this reason, the results of this study are especially compelling. Under laboratory conditions designed to minimize injury, a significant 29% of occupants were found to have sustained injury at a crash velocity of 2.5 mph, and fully 38% sustained injury at 5 mph. In the real world, victims of rear-impact collisions were often not anticipating the impact, their head may have been turned, their seated posture was very likely poor resulting in their head being too far from the headrest, and frequently their headrests were positioned too low. Each of these factors amplify and compound the trauma that occurs to muscles, ligaments, joints, nerves, blood vessels and bone. Now add to this list a spine that may not have optimal alignment, optimal curvature, or may have some other pre-existing abnormality or health condition. Perhaps this may not be the first such accident an individual has been involved in. As our understanding of whiplash trauma evolves, and more studies like this one support the contention low speed rear-end collisions do cause injury, the controversy regarding authenticity of such injuries may finally be put to rest.

Beware of High Blood Sugar in the Morning BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP
I
f you suffer from diabetes, there is a probability that you may experience a sugar spike in the mornings in spite of not having eaten for a couple of hours. Scientists believe that because of hormones released during the night (growth hormones, cortisol, glucagon, epinephrine), your insulin resistance may be stronger, hence the elevated levels in blood sugar. A small spike in fasting glucose level is normal for most people, but if your numbers are too high or you are waking up with headaches or sweating, this could be an indication that something is wrong. Your blood glucose may be too low at night or you may be experiencing what is known as the dawn phenomenon—when the body increases sugar levels to make sure there is enough energy for the person to wake up in the morning. If you are experiencing this problem frequently, of course you want to talk to your doctor for professional advice. Chances are, however, you just need to implement lifestyle changes that will help resolve the problem. Keeping your nutrition on point and exercising frequently may be all you need to help alleviate this condition. In a study that looked at data from 1990-2016, scientists discovered high fasting plasma glucose had increased by 76% in US. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in April, revealed high body mass index (BMI) and fasting plasma glucose are two of three important risk factors and are steadily increasing. Both conditions are related to diet and lifestyle choices and can be preventable—in some cases they can be completely eradicated. In fact, it is possible for patients to eventually get off insulin prescription if they are willing to implement changes in their lifestyle and nutrition. “US residents are not consuming a healthy diet; they tend to consume more calories than needed,” the article highlights. “Rising BMI is driving up fasting plasma glucose levels and diabetes.” Alarmed by the findings and how dire the situation is, authors of this study made a call to action by stating it is imperative that Americans control and reduce their weight as well as for our country to develop a comprehensive program to improve the US diet. Given the overwhelming research that continues to show the trend of how our health is directly impacted by our dietary choices, it is important that individuals work with qualified practitioners to really dig deep and find the root cause of disease—this is the goal of the functional medicine approach. A
s the Rotary Club of Weston enters its 32nd year as the premier community service organization in Broward County, we reflect upon this year’s theme, “Rotary: Be the Inspiration”. Barry Rassin, Rotary International President for the 2018-2019 Rotary year, chose this theme to exemplify what Rotary wants to accomplish in each community, namely, to inspire others to be the best they can. Be inspired to reach your full potential and help others be an inspiration in the families, in the occupation and in the community. However, the theme also is a bold shout out to the 1.5 million Rotarians in over 200 countries worldwide that we must be an inspiration to each other. It is an absolute honor and privilege to lead the Rotary Club of Weston in the coming Rotary year starting on July 1. The Rotary Club of Weston is a large, diverse and ever-evolving group of professionals that similarly believe the Rotary “Service Above Self” motto and in the power of helping those in need locally and internationally.
The Weston club sets out to foster, encourage and facilitate numerous meaningful and much needed community service projects throughout Weston, Broward County and across the globe. Locally, we will continue to work on initiatives, including but not limited to, Life Net 4 Families, The Harvest Drive, Hope Outreach, Susan B. Anthony Center for Recovery, and Habitat for Humanity. Globally, in 2018, our club will focus on literacy projects in Panama and clean water projects in the Bahamas, Colombia and Guatemala. Of course, we will also continue our unyielding support of the Polio Plus Program to ensure that we have a polio free world by the end of 2018. All projects are funded from the proceeds of our major charity event, the Rotary Run for Tomorrow, which occurs on December 9, 2018, at Cypress Bay High School. Our club also remains steadfast in its commitment to develop the leaders of tomorrow. Our other major event is our 32nd annual golf tournament which
provides the funds to support college scholarships. In May, our club awarded over 60 college scholarships to graduating seniors at Cypress Bay High School, Western High School, The Sagemont School and HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected and Disadvantaged Youth). These awards totaled well over $150,000 and exemplify why we remain one of the premier scholarship programs in Broward County, in conjunction with a strong community partnership with the Broward Education Foundation. With all that, I am most proud of the exemplary manner in which our members go about to achieve their service goals. Our members are warm, passionate, engaging and eager to share their hearts for Service Above Self and the family of Rotary. I personally invite you to join us.
