It’s Time to Go Back to School
ummer is coming to an end even earlier this year! August 15th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. So, for parents, that means it is time to stock up on school supplies, help your child pick out that lucky lunch box, and remind him or her to finish their summer reading list.
S
PUBLISHERS Christy & Terry & Jaillet publisher@ourcitymedia.com
It’s also time to register for after school enrichment programs. There are a myriad of different activities and opportunities, with everything from sports to music and everything in between.
OFFICE MANAGER Gabriela Moscoso
Parents also have choices in how their kids are educated. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, a parent must now decide between enrolling their child at their local school, charter school, private school or online learning.
ADVERTISING SALES MANAGER Nancy Koval nancy@ourcitymedia.com

We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to language lessons to Little League. The material has been curated to provide parents with a useful guide to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year.

Pictures may be taken in the greater Weston area or during the photographer’s travels. “We hope to see images depicting different ways we see color, patterns of color, or color in unusual places,” states Arts Council of Greater Weston President Jami Nix Rahn. She says it is amazing to see the excitement and interest the summer photo contest draws, with it attracting more and more submissions each year. “There is not a lot of arts programming in the summer and we would like to keep the community involved all year round,” notes Nix Rahn. “By sponsoring the summer photo contest, everyone has the opportunity to keep their artistic skills working as they enjoy the summer months.” The Arts Council of Greater Weston (ACGW)
uses social media as the platform for this photo contest. To enter, participants can submit pictures of “Life in Color” through Instagram using #acgwcolor. You can also go to that site to vote for your favorite photos. A panel of local professional photographers and artists will serve as judges. Pictures will be evaluated based on originality, composition, artistic merit and the overall impact the image has on the viewer. Cash prizes will be awarded. The First Place winner will receive $100, the Second Place winner will receive $75, and the Third Place winner will get $50. In addition, the photograph with the most likes on Instagram (#acgwcolor) will
receive a $50 cash prize. The “Life in Color” photographs will be on exhibit at the Weston Branch Library in September. “We are delighted to provide an opportunity highlighting photography, a key creative component of the visual arts,” notes Carol Lema, Arts Council Vice President and motivator behind this contest. “By involving local amateur photographers, the Arts Council adds this component to our existing palette of arts and cultural offerings in the Weston area.” For more information on the Arts Council of Greater Weston’s Summer Instagram Photo Contest, including Official Rules, visit www.1weston.com. The deadline to submit photographs is August 10th.
Arts Council of Greater Weston Seeks Volunteers BY STACEY BOMSER
W
eston offers a vibrant arts and cultural calendar made possible by the tireless efforts of community volunteers through the Arts Council of Greater Weston. With the 2018-2019 season set to begin shortly, volunteers are needed to help plan award-winning programs such as Celebrate the Arts, Weston World Fest, Weston Foreign Film Series, and the Student Artist Showcase. “The overwhelming response from the community to these events has led to their continued growth,” states Arts Council of Greater Weston President Jami Nix Rahn. “To make 20182019 bigger and better and even better received, we need volunteers who form the backbone of these efforts. What an enjoyable way to meet your
neighbors, work with your neighbors, and make neighbors your new friends.” Celebrate the Arts Day is one of the Arts Council’s signature events. This interactive, hands-on, family-friendly celebration of the arts was voted Best Family Event in 2018 Best of Weston. Event Chair Carole Myers says, “to continue to flourish and grow, we need help in flyer distribution to schools and businesses, as well as gathering lists of businesses that are potential booth and program ad sponsors.” Although only a few years old, Weston World Fest has quickly grown to become the Arts Council’s largest annual event. It, too, is a Best of Weston winner for Best Cultural Event, as it highlights the diversity of our community through educational country booths, ethnic food and cultural performances. Event Chair Carol Lema says volunteers are needed

to help coordinate these activities and continue to raise the level of participation in this popular event. This past year’s Student Artist Showcase featured a record number of works, with 229 pieces of artwork on display at the Weston Branch Library. Chair Gryssele Machicote says volunteers are needed to help coordinate teacher contacts, hang and take down the display, and register guests at the awards reception. Weston Foreign Film Series Chair Irene Carraway says she has sufficient volunteers and film reviewers at this time but welcomes community input with comments on shown films or suggestions of new ones for next season. In addition to volunteers for individual events, the Arts Council is looking for “techies” to help promote events and aid in administrative efforts. “We need volunteers, even students, with social media skills who are computer savvy and willing to learn,” states Nix Rahn. “All of our events require 21st Century tech help.”

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. The avid soccer player exemplified the AYSO philosophies and was an active volunteer in the program. “All athletes who apply for the Guillermo A. Diaz Garcia AYSO Scholarship need to show that he/she shares Guillermo’s passion for helping others, by being an active volunteer recognized not only by an AYSO staff member, but also from a school teacher regarding his/her character and commitment to community service,” explains AYSO 644 Weston Regional Commissioner Alan Dagen. “AYSO has been presenting this award annually since Guillermo’s untimely passing and this was the tenth scholarship awarded in his name.” Maria was a long-time volunteer with AYSO’s VIP program. This is given to AYSO athletes who have played for ten or more seasons and are currently enrolled in the program. The recipient should possess the spirit of having fun playing soccer and exhibit positive attitude and good sportsmanship. He/she must also be endorsed by an AYSO staff member and a previous coach. “Dylan has been a part of AYSO Recreation, Select, State Game and National Game programs for over eleven years and has volunteered a significant amount of time to each of these different programs,” states Dagen. “He was chosen because he demonstrated the true philosophy of what an AYSO player should be on and off the field. Caring Weston Mothers Call on Community to Help Babies in Venezuela BY STACEY BOMSER
K
arin Torres, Lisa Romano and Natalia Rodriguez consider themselves lucky. Their families were able to leave Venezuela before the economic collapse and resulting riots and food shortages. Now these Weston women are working together to help babies and children in their home country by collecting donations of infant formula for Venezuela’s tiniest victims. “Venezuela is facing the worst crisis in its history. Hyperinflation and food scarcity have increased exponentially, while public services – especially the health system – are completely inefficient and incapable of attending to the needs of the people,” explains Karin
AYSO 644 collected infant formula and baby supplies to benefit Helping Kids in Venezuela’s efforts.
Torres, who started Helping Kids in Venezuela with her friends. “Newborn babies are particularly suffering this harsh reality. Due to malnutrition and general poor health, many mothers are unable to breastfeed, or provide formula, and their babies are getting sick and even dying. By making formula available we are significantly improving the way these babies start their lives.” To ensure the infant formula gets to those babies who need it most, Helping Kids in Venezuela works directly with Venezuelan doctors at some of the country’s biggest hospitals. Torres says the shipments are sent directly to the doctors, who are in charge of distributing them to those in greatest need. To help fulfill the vast need for donations, Helping Kids in Venezuela has called upon the Weston community for support. AYSO 644 held a donation drive during a FIFA World Cup by Panini trading card event at Weston Regional Park, collecting enough infant formula to make 5,593 two-ounce newborn bottles, as well as basic baby items. In June, the Vacation Bible School at St. Paul Lutheran Church collected enough infant formula to fill 5,386 two-ounce bottles. In addition, Torres says AirByUs has sponsored local domino tournaments to raise funds to cover shipping costs and MGV Cargo has provided special ship-

Torres say she and the women of Helping Kids in Venezuela have been overwhelmed by the generosity of their new neighbors here in Weston. “It has been an amazing experience since Weston is a fabulous community filled with compassionate, caring, big-hearted people from all cultural backgrounds.” She adds, “The Weston community has been outstanding in their support and has responded to each call we have made. They have helped spread the word so that each day our reach has expanded, our collections have grown, and people are approaching us to find out how they can help.” For information on how you can help the cause, email momsforvenezuela@gmail.com. compassion to others. We believe that a compassionate, kind heart is what is needed to positively impact the world,” shares Andrea. “Kids Helping Kids will be a great way to show our kids, and others, how they can help their community.” Right now, the couple and their daughters are coordinating Kids Helping Kids’ annual school supply drive, collecting backpacks, composition notebooks, crayons, glue sticks, markers, folders and pencils to donate to disadvantaged students attending Royal Palm Elementary School in Lauderhill. Andrea, a former teacher, says this project is particularly meaningful to her. “One of my first teaching jobs was in a middle school here in Broward County. Many of my students did not have the school supplies necessary to complete their assignments. As a result, I would purchase many materials for my students to ensure they felt equipped and prepared to succeed in school. ou’re never too young to make a difference in the lives of others. That’s the main message of Weston-based Kids Helping Kids. The organization was started 12 years ago by Lisa Lerner as a means of teaching her own children the importance of helping others who are less fortunate. With her oldest child now starting college, Lisa has handed over the reigns to friend Andrea Saneholtz, whose two young girls are ready to learn this important life lesson. “My husband, Matt, and I want our girls to understand the power of kindness and the need to show

Andrea became involved with this organization after her oldest daughter was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy at age three. “The Food Allergy Heroes Walk recognizes the courage and determination of food allergy families and empowers these everyday heroes to end food allergy fears for good. Families and friends come together to unite behind their commitment to FARE’s mission to raise funds that will change children’s lives through research, education, advocacy and broad awareness,” explains Andrea. “Our goal this year is for Kids Helping Kids to have a presence at this walk, helping to make a difference.” To learn more about how you and your family can get involved with Kids Helping Kids email kidshelpkids411@gmail.com. School supply donations can be dropped off at Temple Dor Dorim, 2360 Glades Circle in Weston and Tobias Financial Advisors, 1000 S. Pine Island Road, Suite 250 in Plantation, through August 3rd.

BY ANGIE GUERRERO re you starting to think about selling but your spouse hates the idea of downsizing? Guess what? You are not alone. It is a tough decision to make, as it will affect you financially, socially and physically. Let’s take a look at the statistics: Sellers are now obtaining a 29.7 percent return on investment compared with their original purchase price. The data shows that many longtime homeowners, including empty nesters, are resistant to selling. My accountant and my financial advisor tell me that this is the main topic of conversation brought up by their clients over 54 years old. Here are some ideas to factor your lifestyle plans into your decision-making: Most parents of grown children love the idea of downscaling to a smaller place because they want to have fewer upkeep demands. On the other hand, empty nesters wish to hang on to the large family property where they’ve raised kids because they want to take advantage of the extra space in new ways; my parents included.
A
The reality is that most empty nesters are clinging to the big house with the idea that it will become the hub for many extended family gatherings, but, it’s so hard to guess where your grown children will be living or time they’ll have to spend with you once they get busy with their lives. Seek outside help to gain perspective By going through a professional group, such as the National Association of Personal Financial Planners, you can locate a planner you can hire for just a few hours to discuss your empty-nest housing issues. In addition, consider seeking advice from a certified public accountant who is trained as a Personal Financial Specialist, or PFS. You can locate a PFS in your area by visiting the organization’s website, www.aicpa.org. Factor in financial considerations Nowadays, many people reach the “kids-are-gone stage” with years left in their careers and a desire to keep working. But it doesn’t mean they can afford to be ignorant about their future needs for retirement income. A large number of baby boomers are not ready financially for retirement. If you’re in this category, and your home has appreciated, selling could be potentially more lucrative. It will free up money from your current home by moving to a smaller, lower priced home without sacrificing your status especially when your kids are still in college or grad school. Don’t delay charting your housing plans. Some people value the freedom that comes with an empty-nest life, very few are depressed after the last child leaves, mainly because they are in denial. They run away from making hard choices, such as whether to sell the big house and move. In summary, “It could be a huge mistake to rush into a decision about selling your home, but postponing your plans is also a real bad idea”. Girls Encouraged to Try Out for Weston Explosion Softball BY STACEY BOMSER
T
ryouts will be held this month for the Weston Explosion Fastpitch Girls Softball program. It is open to girls, ages six to 18, living in Weston and surrounding communities. “Fastpitch softball is played by girls and is similar to baseball except the field is smaller, the ball is larger, and there is no mound,” explains Weston Explosion Representative Rob Fusco. “The pitcher throws the ball in an underhand, windmill motion at speeds of up to 77 miles per hour for Olympic level players.” The Weston Explosion will be moving to their new home at Vista Park this fall. The program offers a fall
and spring/summer season. In addition, it hosts two tournaments each year, one in November and the other in April. “Currently we have six Weston Explosion teams: one 8U team, two 10U teams, two 12U teams and a 16U team,” states Fusco. “We have also partnered with the Firecrackers national brand in an effort to attract and keep elite level players. The Firecrackers team is comprised of high school aged girls who plan on playing in college. The Firecrackers play in showcase level tournaments attended by coaches and scouts who are recruiting players for college softball teams.” Fusco says Weston Explosion players have gone on to play at such prestigious schools as Columbia, Princeton, Virginia, Lehigh, and Yale. In addition, 15 of the 17 players on the Cypress Bay High School varsity softball team participated in Weston Explosion at some point. The Weston Explosion has been around for close to 20 years. It has seen great success during that time. Five teams participated in the USSSA South Florida State Championship earlier this summer, with the 10U-2008 team finishing in third place. “Just this past year, our 10U-2007 team took second place in the 2017 Weston November Knockout, 12U-2006 took third in Sailfish Splash, 12U-2005 took second in Corey Jones ‘Keep the Beat Alive’, 10U-2008 placed second in Angels for Autism, and 8U placed third in
Wellington Walk on the Wild Side,” boasts Fusco. “Last year’s 14U team, coached by Sasha Horton Bentrinder, was arguably our most successful Weston Explosion team ever. They won two USSSA tournaments, one USA Softball tournament, and took first place at the USSSA South Florida State Championships. The team also had many top three finishes.” The Weston Explosion program is run by volunteers and professional coaches, who receive background checks and are USA Softball ACE (Aspire, Challenge, Encourage) certified. To learn more about Weston Explosion Fastpitch Softball, including tryout dates, find them on Facebook @WestonExplosion or email softball@WestonExplosion.com.

BY ASSISTANT DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN s summer fun comes to a close and students return to the classroom here are a few tips you should share with your family and friends to keep everyone safe as we once again adjust our routine. Distracted driving is a public health issue that affects us all. More than 40,000 people were killed on our nation’s roadways last year, and distracted driving is a major contributor. As our most precious commodities return to the classroom, taking a few extra moments to review some safety tips to ensure their protection can help prevent unnecessary and avoidable injuries. For those students who walk to school: ▸▸ Don’t walk to school wearing your headphones or earbuds. It is important to be able to hear the sounds around you. ▸▸ Never walk while texting. You should be aware of your surroundings and focused on the road ahead of you. ▸▸ Cross the street at crosswalks when available and with the help of a crossing guard. ▸▸ Before crossing the street always look left, right and left again to ensure that the path is clear and that there aren’t any cars coming. ▸▸ NEVER dart out from between or in front of a parked car. For those students who ride their bicycles to school: ▸▸ Always wear a helmet that is properly fitted and securely fastened. ▸▸ Know the rules of the road and follow them. Ride single file and wear bright colored clothing. ▸▸ Stop at crosswalks and walk your bicycle across the street when it is safe. ▸▸ Watch for hidden hazards such as pot holes in the road, dogs and people exiting cars. An unexpected opening car door can ruin a bicyclist’s day. For those students who are bus riders: ▸▸ Students should be familiar with items that are and are not permitted on a school bus. These can be found online at www.pupiltrans.org/ Do’s&Don’t.html ▸▸ As the bus approaches, line up a minimum of six feet away from the curb or edge of road and enter the bus single file once the bus has made a complete stop. ▸▸ If seat belts are available, “make it click”. ▸▸ Never stand in a moving bus. Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before getting off. ▸▸ When crossing the street make sure the bus driver can see you. Never cross directly in front of the bus, leave at least ten feet of space between you and the bus. School days bring new challenges for drivers and unexpected congestion. School buses are busy picking up children, bicyclists and walkers are hurrying to beat the late bell, and parents are rushing to drop off their cargo before going to work. Drivers, please pay extra attention to school zones and take added care to slow your vehicles to the posted speed limit. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and avoid blocking their pathways with your car. Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians or a stopped school bus on an undivided road when its lights are flashing with the stop arm extended.

ccording to the National Institutes of Health, one-third of the adult population, that’s 97 million people, is overweight or obese – and an estimated five to ten million of those are considered morbidly obese. If you, or someone you love, fall into this category, help is available right here in Weston. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Bariatric and Metabolic Institute has been designated a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. This accreditation acknowledges the hospital’s commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and safety efforts for patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery. “Cleveland Clinic’s unique model of medicine brings together a multidisciplinary team that works in Dr. Raul Rosenthal concert to ensure
our patients receive the highest quality care and have the necessary tools to support their needs when making life-long changes for better health,” states Raul Rosenthal, MD, Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic Florida. “I’m proud of our team for earning this accreditation and for helping more than 6,000 patients on their weight-loss journey.” In 2006, Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Bariatric and Metabolic Institute became the first hospital-based weight-loss surgery program in Florida to earn level 1 accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program. The Institute has also been accredited as a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Both are precursors to the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. According to the National Institute of Health, approximately 15.5 million people in the United States suffer from severe obesity and are at an increased risk of associated diseases and conditions, including type II diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Volunteer Programs Allow Residents to Support BSO Efforts BY STACEY BOMSER
W
ith the height of hurricane season approaching, members of our community stand poised and ready to serve should they be called into action. While the City of Weston contracts the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) to safeguard our city by providing police and fire rescue services, several volunteer programs complement these services. In the event of an emergency, such as a hurricane, Weston’s Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) has been trained to act. To date, more than 100 residents have been trained by BSO Fire Rescue in basic disaster response skills such as light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, team organization, and fire safety. If a disaster happens that overwhelms local response capability, CERT members can apply the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to give critical support to family, friends and neighbors in the immediate area until help arrives. Contact the BSO Fire Rescue Division in Weston at 954-389-2015 for information on the next CERT training class. The Citizen Observer Patrol (C.O.P.) is a volunteer program sponsored by the Broward Sheriff’s Office that uses a simple approach to safeguarding neighborhoods through residents’ involvement. COP volunteers are the eyes and ears of the community, assisting and enhancing BSO’s policing efforts. They help BSO fight
crime by patrolling the community, looking out for suspicious activity or potential hazards, and aiding local residents. In addition to patrol activities, typical assignments include performing checks on unoccupied residences COP volunteers participate in the Winter Safety Expo. Girl Scouts Recognize 18 Weston Residents as Outstanding Volunteers BY STACEY BOMSER
T
here’s more to Girl Scouts than just selling cookies. Over the past 100 years, Girl Scouts has been committed to building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. And that would not be possible without the tireless efforts of community volunteers. More than 4,500 volunteers help serve, lead and mentor the 10,000 girls who participate in Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. During the Council’s annual adult recognition awards ceremony, 18 Weston residents were honored for their service. Susan Mejia and Sarah Nickoson were presented with the Thanks Badge II, this national recognition is the highest award given to an active, registered adult member. Nominated by their peers, Mejia and Nickoson had both previously been awarded the Thanks Badge and serve Girl Scouts by going significantly above and beyond the call of duty when providing service to girls, other volunteers, and the Council. Joan Cruz received the Honor Pin. This award acknowledges service performed by a volunteer who

Scout volunteer. In addition to serving as leader for Troop 11741, she is also Service Unit Manager for the Royal Palm service unit in Weston. She says Girl Scout volunteers teach life lessons that are not taught in school. “We are able to put the girls in charge of entire events, which not only allows them to learn about leadership, but to experience it and grow in confidence. We can offer girls the opportunities to try new activities that they have no previous knowledge about and watch them grow in confidence as they conquer new levels of success. Finally, we teach each and every girl that they have a voice, their opinions matter, and it takes just a little courage to express themselves and make a difference in the world.” Mejia encourages members of the community to get involved, stating that Girl Scout volunteers gain just as much from the experience as the girls they mentor. “Our volunteers are

Four volunteers from Weston were bestowed Appreciation Pins for their continued dedication to Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. Congratulations to Lezley Hsiao, Jennifer Patino, Liz Penland and Tamara Thovtrup. To be eligible for the Appreciation Pin, a volunteer must go above and beyond the expectations of their volunteer position while contributing to the Council’s overall goals and objectives. Volunteer of Excellence Awards were presented to eleven Weston volunteers: Ana Bravo, Diego Cruz Jr., Marina DeMaio, Jennifer Dyni, Kelly Kooken, Katie Monioudis, Silvia Olmos, Tina Schlonsky, Angel Soderman, Ronnie Trigo, and Nicole Valdivieso. The Volunteer of Excellence Award recognizes volunteers who have contributed outstanding service in support of the Council’s mission. In the entire Southeast Florida region there were 288 award recipients. With the school year starting, now is the perfect time to get involved. Anyone

It’s such as benefit to adults to continue to try, fail, persevere, and eventually succeed with new skills. It benefits the girls to see adults, at any age, can learn something new and keep moving forward in life.” Watching the girls grow and flourish has been one of the highlights of Mejia’s volunteer experience. She shares, “My fondest memory as a Girl Scout volunteer happened (in May). As I sat at my daughter’s eighth grade graduation ceremony, I watched the young ladies go up on stage to accept their diplomas in the culmination of their school years at St. Bonaventure. I remembered meetings, activities, and campouts that almost every girl in her graduating class had attended, as over 80% of them had been in Girl Scouts at some point in time.”

Over the years, she has led two troops, managed Fall Product and Cookie Sales for the Royal Palm Service Unit, and currently serves as Assistant Service Unit Manager. She also works with older girls who are Community Service Advocates. Nickoson says she takes great pride in seeing the accomplishments of the girls she has mentored. “Watching these young girls grow over the years and want to help their community is a great sense of accomplishment. I’ve watched them become more independent, handle difficult situations, work as a team and watch them mentor younger girls, all of which gives me great pride.” She says being a Girl Scout volunteer has been a rewarding experience. “I’ve enjoyed teaching the girls to become strong, loving, caring individuals who take an active role in their community and strive to make the world a better place. To
be able to help others and know that you are making a difference in the community and in people’s lives creates a sense of happiness and gratitude.” Nickoson says one of her fondest memories as a Girl Scout volunteer happened a few years ago when she took her troop to Savannah, Georgia, to visit the home of Girl Scout Founder Juliette Gordon Lowe. “We spent a long weekend there learning the history of Girl Scouts and all that Juliette Gordon Lowe did for the girls and her country. It was an incredible and unforgettable trip.” She encourages other adults to get involved. “Girl Scouts is about creating long-lasting friendships, memories and impacting our community in a positive manner.”

Camryn says one of her biggest accomplishments was taking part in the CF Foundation’s Teen Advocate Program. In 2012, she was one of 50 teens to march on Capitol Hill and meet with lawmakers. “That weekend I met with 22 members of Congress to convince them to vote for a bill that would fast track medication for sick children through the FDA. That bill was signed by the Senate, Congress, and signed by then President Barack Obama, within a few short weeks of our visit.” According to Camryn, her sister Ashley and 70,000 other children have reaped the rewards from the progress made once that bill became law. “Today Ashley takes the drug Orkambi, which alters her genetic mutation so that she can live a healthier more productive life.” Elizabeth Shea, a Western High School graduate, also received an All in for CF Scholarship. She is living with CF and is now entering her senior year at Stetson University. Elizabeth is a passionate musician who says one of her biggest challenges was undergoing multiple nasal polyp surgeries during her freshman year of high school. Her advice to others facing chronic issues is don’t get discouraged, focus on people and activities that make you happy.

How to Protect Yourself from Imposter Scams BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK n an imposter scam, a con artist will contact a potential victim and pose as a family member, law enforcement officer or government agency representative. The scammer will demand money to be wired to them immediately to avoid penalties of some sort or to claim a prize. Charity Scams: While there are numerous legitimate, worthy charities doing great work, some scam artists seek to take advantage of the charitable spirit of others. Imposters will pose as representatives of a legitimate charity or espouse a fictional charity in order to solicit funds, which they then pocket. Be sure you know that the charity soliciting money is legitimate before donating. Check to see if the charity is registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at www.800helpfla.com. You may also contact the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance at www.give.org to determine whether the charity has any complaints against it.

The Grandparents Scam: Imposters pose as law enforcement officers and call grandparents claiming that a grandchild is in jail. They then demand immediate payment to bail the grandchild out of jail. In another iteration of the scam, a person claiming to be the grandchild will call saying they have been mugged or otherwise detained in another country and are in need of money to get home. To avoid falling victim, verify through another means the grandchild’s whereabouts and avoid acting immediately. The IRS Scam: Scammers pose as IRS agents and call or email potential victims claiming that they owe the IRS and unless they are paid immediately, they will be arrested. The imposters demand that the victim wire money or provide a prepaid debit card in order to pay the taxes and avoid arrest. Know that the IRS will never make first contact via email or over the phone. They will always make first contact by mail. Should you receive a letter that appears to be from the IRS and it instructs you to call a number, verify online that the number listed in the letter is in fact a number associated with the IRS. The IRS also will never demand you wire money or provide a prepaid debit card for payment. The Arrest Warrant Scam: Similar to the jury duty scam, imposters pose as law enforcement
officers and call or email a potential victim claiming that they have a warrant out for their arrest or are otherwise being pursued by law enforcement. The imposters will claim the victim must pay them immediately or they will be arrested. Know that a law enforcement or court official will never ask for you to wire money or ask for your confidential information over the phone or via email. Utility Scams: Imposters claim to be from one of the utilities in Florida and threaten to turn off the power, gas or water unless a payment is made. Should you receive such a call, hang up and contact your utility provider using the phone number that appears on your bill to determine the status of your account. If you believe you are the victim of an imposter scam, file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office online at www.myfloridalegal.com or by phone at 1-866-9-NO-SCAM. n State Representative Richard Stark (D – Weston) represents House District 104 which includes all of Weston. She plans to major in Graphic Design and minor in Marketing. Two other Cypress Bay students, Corina Dorrego and Paola Diaz, placed in the top 15 overall in the Congressional Art Competition. POSITIVE PARENTING
Don’t Worry, Be Happy BY IVIS MATEOS
C
rying, tantrums and clinginess are only a few of the feelings parents experience on their child’s first day of school. DON’T WORRY this is all part of the process. BE HAPPY that you can be there with your child through this life experience. Heavy breathing, a feeling of happiness one minute and sorrow the next, guilt taking over the enthusiasm for your child’s new opportunity to learn and make new friends in their new school or class, are all part of the things you and your child may experience. However, I promise you that for the most part, all these feelings will subside and you as well as your child will soon discover that school will help you both grow and flourish as individuals.
FAMILY & GERIATRIC MEDICINE
Here are some tips to help ease the process:
Meet & Greet: Set a time before school begins to meet and greet the caregivers. Let your child get familiarized with the classroom and their teachers. Be honest: Communication is key. Be honest with your child and talk them through the process days before their first day of school. Comfort them with positive and encouraging words. Be present: Provide affection before, during and after their school day is over. Assure them you will return at a specific time and keep your promise. Even toddlers understand and will look forward to your return. Fake it ‘till you make it: Children mimic and reflect that which the parents are feeling. If you show anxiety, they will feel anxiety – be calm and comforting. Quick goodbye ritual: Prepare yourself for a quick goodbye strategy. The longer you linger the harder the transition. Be loving but quick and to the point. Breathe: This one is for you mom and dad. Take a deep breath and remember you are not alone. School administrators and teachers are always willing to help you through the process. Count on them for a shoulder to cry on or for a laugh if you need. Don’t Worry. Be Happy. Pediatric Foot and Ankle The Value of Fat in Sprains May Be a More Cosmetic Surgery Complex Growth Plate Injury BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA njuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present. Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of 13 and 18 can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone. Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating. X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary. Treatment options (early diagnosis is crucial): 1. Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster it heals. 2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Nonweightbearing would be mandatory. 3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked. The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment.

BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long-lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants is not applicable, because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting-edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells, as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. The club attracted more than 50 members in its inaugural year and many of the fifth graders who participated last year are now making plans to start Operation Smile Clubs at their new middle schools. Falcon Cove Middle School’s TNT Thursdays Spread Kindness BY STACEY BOMSER
I
f you’ve driven by Falcon Cove Middle School, you’ve probably seen the sign on the fence promoting TNT Thursdays. TNT stands for Ten Nice Things. The project started with the Peer Counselors, but quickly spread to the entire school and is now being introduced at some of the Falcon Cove’s feeder schools. Peer Counseling Advisor Jeannie Demspey began Ten Nice Things as a response to the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015, which killed 130 people and injured hundreds more. “My Peer Counseling students reached out to the people of Paris by writing letters to the embassy,” explains Ms. Dempsey. “When I mailed the letters, I wanted my kids to focus on the positive and have it coincide with the day they wore their Peer Counselor shirts, hence TNT Thursdays.” Ms. Dempsey says her students are asked to do ten
nice things each week. These can be done at school, at home or in the community. Examples include participating in the school’s Peace Week, toy drive, Venezuela Relief project, or hurricane victim support. One of the group’s most meaningful TNT projects was making friendship bracelets to give to every student and staff member at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to let them know they had a friend at Falcon Cove. In addition, students can complete individual TNTs such as helping neighbors, feeding the homeless or babysitting siblings. The success of TNT Thursdays has spread throughout the school. Ms. Dempsey says now the entire school participates, all 2,400 students are exhibiting acts of kindness and being helpful to each other. As an incentive, students receive a special TNT bracelet after completing 20 nice things. “Kids come from every grade and class with documentation and receive their TNT bracelets.”
Peer Counseling is an elective class at Falcon Cove, open to select seventh and eighth grade students. The objective of the course is to provide knowledge and opportunities for students to assist their peers. Students work with peers as tutors, counselors, mentors, mediators and helpers. Roleplaying, team building, and skill building activities enhance students’ interpersonal skills. Various teen and social issues are discussed throughout the program. Guest speakers are also invited to share their expertise. Students must complete an application and be approved by the instructor in order to become a Peer Counselor.

How to Improve Quality of Life How to Look and Feel Your for Seniors with Dementia Best for Your Next Event BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES
E
ach person has a different definition of quality of life. For some, it might be watching a sunset, playing a favorite sport or board game, reading a book, or enjoying a nice dinner with family. While your preferences may be different, we can all agree that quality of life is made by these special moments. If you have a loved one living with memory loss or dementia, it is important to understand that despite the disease, they are still capable of finding pleasure, feeling satisfaction, and living a happy life. Here are a few ideas for how you can improve the day-to-day life of a loved one living with dementia. Provide a Relaxed Environment. When someone you love has Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, providing a calm, tranquil environment is key to their quality of life. We know how hard it can be at times, but providing a serene ambiance benefits everyone – patients, care partners, and family. Fill their home with soft music and aromatics; decorate it with soothing colors and warm light; and make the rooms easy to navigate. It’s always nice to have visitors, but it’s also very helpful to have a schedule. Help them by maintaining consistent visit times. Provide Emotional Support. Sometimes the only thing you need to do for a senior with dementia, is be there for them. While a care partner can assist Alzheimer’s patients in many ways, support from family and friends is irreplaceable. No matter how busy your days can get, it’s always important to plan a visit and enjoy some quality time with your loved one. In the early days it can be overwhelming to find answers to those tough questions, but the best way to get through it is together. Seniors and their family both need emotional support throughout this journey. For a lot of people, joining a support group can be very helpful. Whatever your situation is, it’s comforting to know that you are not alone. Introduce Meaningful Activities. Maintaining an interest in stimulating activities can help reduce the effects of the disease and will ensure the senior continues to interact with those around them. Yes, some activities may be more difficult than before, but that doesn’t negate the interest. Meaningful activities, whether they are new or old, are important for keeping the individual happy and engaged. Reminiscence Therapy. Reminiscence therapy, also known as “life review therapy,” is an effective and pleasant way to connect with individuals who have dementia. How does it work? Events from an individual’s late teens and early twenties tend to remain as the most prominent memories. Psychologists call this “the reminiscence bump.” These memories remain vivid and can easily be remembered by using simple triggers. This is a great way to get a better understanding and feeling of their lives before the illness. Encourage Social Interaction. Therapy, a relaxed environment, and meaningful activities are important, but nothing is as important as social interaction. Listen to your loved one, be there, and encourage them to make the most of their days. Assess your loved one’s social needs and try to meet them where they are by working together with their care partners – and don’t forget to remind them how much you love them. While many seniors receive clinical or emotional support, they don’t always get physical support. Sometimes a hug can say everything that words can’t. BY DR. TAMY FAIERMAN, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON re you preparing for an upcoming special occasion? As we watch celebrities float down the red carpet during awards season, we can’t help but think about the big events in our own lives that require us to go a little extra glam. Whether you’re attending a wedding or a major party, we recommend beauty and wellness tips that can help you up the wow factor, so you’ll be able to reveal your best self yet. The first step in achieving the best version of you is to evaluate what you want to work on before the big event. In addition to getting Botox, fillers and even minor surgery such as an eyelid lift, lower blepharoplasty, and neck liposuction, there are several other procedures that are routine, low risk and yield fantastic results. I find that my patients usually want to have that red carpet glow along with a refreshed look. Patients will say to me, “I want to look amazing for this occasion and feel vibrant, healthy and fit and I want to reflect that internally and externally”. Below are some tips to ensure that your skin is beautiful, relaxed and reveals a radiant glow: Hydrate and Nourish Drink Water. It’s not quite groundbreaking, but it’s the truth, your skin is most clear and radiant when you are properly hydrated. Your skin cells require water to work effectively, so drink six to ten 8 oz. servings of water a day and you’ll see plumper, more elastic and smoother skin. Adding an herbal tincture to your water is also very helpful. You can find products and herbalists to work with you on which herbs are right for you. At our spa we use our Burdock Radiant Skin Tincture. Herbal tinctures are rich in cleansing and purifying herbs to promote a clearer complexion. Schedule a Facial Give yourself some time to work with your aesthetician to help prepare your skin for your big event. Schedule a facial two to 12 weeks before the event. During a facial, your aesthetician can give you deeper cleansing and exfoliation. Your skin may be treated with extra-strength peels and serums to help address wrinkles or skin discoloration. I recommend holistic facials because they are centered on total health and healing and are customized down to the last detail. Holistic facials encourage renewal by rebuilding the foundations of wellness. Organic products specifically infuse the skin with herbs, vitamins, minerals, and clinical grade essential oils to purify, balance and holistically restore a healthful glow. In addition, holistic facials incorporate precise massage, which encourages the cleansing of skin’s tissues and beautifully re-contours the face as fine lines are smoothed and soothed. So always remember, with a little time and advance planning, you can float down the red carpet for your big event with same glow as a celebrity.

Sitting too close to the TV will ruin your eyes Your mother or father may have warned you that you would ruin your eyesight if you sat too close to the television or if you watched too much of it. The same is true for using the computer too much or watching 3-D movies. Your eyes may feel more tired if you sit too close to the TV or spend a lot of time working at the computer or watching 3-D movies, but you can fix that by giving your eyes a rest.
Your vision will get worse if you read in the dark Reading in dim light may be harder, but it doesn’t damage your eyes. Remember that for centuries people read and worked by candlelight or gas lamps that offered far less light than electric lighting. However, having good light will prevent eye fatigue and make reading much easier.
Wearing glasses will cause your eyes to be dependent on them Eyeglasses correct blurry vision. You may want to wear your glasses more often so that you can see clearly, but your glasses aren’t changing your eyes so that they become dependent on your eyeglasses. You’re just getting used to seeing things more clearly. Similarly, wearing glasses with the wrong prescription won’t ruin your eyes. You just won’t see as clearly as you would with the proper prescription.

• Local and Long Distance • Packing and Unpacking • Boxes and Supplies • Air Conditioned Storage • Weekly Trips Through Carrots are a good food for healthy eyesight because they contain vitamin A, a nutrient important to your eyes. However, a balanced diet can contain lots of foods that offer similar benefits. In any case, eating a lot of carrots won’t help you see better unless you suffer from vitamin A deficiency, which is rare in the U.S. Also, eating too many carrots can be its own problem, causing your skin to turn yellow.
Only boys are color blind Color blindness, also known as color deficiency, occurs when you are unable to see colors in a certain way. Most commonly, color blindness happens when a person cannot distinguish between certain colors, usually between greens and reds, and occasionally blues. While males are much more likely to develop color blindness, females can also have the problem. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Can I Modify? BY EVAN BARON here is a phrase which is often heard in family law circles, which is: “You are really never divorced if you have children.” Of course, this is an exaggeration, but there is certainly some truth to that statement. The reality is that issues concerning children, such as support, time sharing, and parental responsibility can be modified (changed) under the right circumstances. Those circumstances would require “an unanticipated, involuntary, substantial change of circumstance.” A party cannot just change his/her mind after an Agreement is reached. You cannot just ask for a “do over.” As an example: a parent cannot quit his or her job for a new job which pays less, and then request a reduction in child support. In addition, a parent cannot intentionally have his or employment terminated for cause (wrong doing) and then request a reduction in support because he/she is not working or has obtained a lower paying job. The above two examples are voluntary and therefore does not meet the criteria for a modification. If, however, parents are terminated through no fault of their own or become disabled, they can request a modification, because the change is not voluntary. Time sharing can also be modified if it meets the same criteria and the court believes a change is in a child’s best interests. Parents are permitted to relocate within 50 miles from the address they are residing in at the time an Agreement (Parenting Plan) is reached. However, this change, although permitted by law, can still result in the need for a modification of the time-sharing schedule. If, for example, the parents were residing in close proximity to one another and therefore were exercising equal time sharing, a 50-mile change of residence can be substantial. How will a parent who now may reside a distance from a child’s school get the child to class on time? How will a parent who resides a distance away be able to do pick up or drop off on a timely basis? Assuming this relocation was not anticipated at the time the Parenting Plan was entered into, a modification may be in the child’s best interests and therefore necessary. Sometimes, however, these changes are anticipated and included in the Parenting Plan. I represented a divorced Dad who at the time the Parenting Plan was signed, was working in another state. He however anticipated returning to South Florida in a few years. It was therefore an anticipated change which was stated in the Parenting Plan. It further stated that upon returning to the area his time sharing would automatically be modified to a 50/50 schedule. If that was not included in the original agreement, he might have been unable to prove an unanticipated change and litigation could have been the result. It is important to make sure that any Agreement entered into is clearly written and includes any anticipated change known at that time.

How Good Is Your Alignment? BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL he single most important – and frequently overlooked – full swing fundamental in golf is the setup position. So, here are some step-bystep tips for how to take your stance and achieve that perfect setup. Alignment in the Golf Stance At address your body (feet, knees, hips, forearms, shoulders and eyes) should be positioned parallel to the target line. When viewed from behind, a right-handed golfer will appear aimed slightly left of the target. This optical illusion is created because the ball is on the target line and the body is not. Foot Position Your feet should start out shoulder-width apart but adjust depending on whether you’re playing woods/long irons, middle irons or short irons. The feet should be shoulder-width (outside of the shoulders to the inside of the heels) for the middle irons. The short iron stance will be two inches narrower and the stance for long irons and woods should be two inches wider. The target-side foot should be flared toward the target from 20 to 40 degrees to allow the body to rotate toward the target on the downswing. The back foot should be square (90 degrees to the target line) to slightly open to create the proper hip turn on the back swing. Your flexibility and body rotation speed determine the proper foot placement. Ball Position in the Golf Stance ▸▸ The position of the golf ball in one’s stance varies depending on the club used. ▸▸ The ball placement in your setup position varies with the club you select. ▸▸ Your middle irons should be played in the middle of your stance. ▸▸ The correct ball position for the long irons and fairway woods plus your driver is to be played off the inside left heel. Keep Your Weight on the Balls of Your Feet Your weight should be balanced on the balls of the feet, not on the heels or toes. With short irons, your weight should be 60% on the target-side foot. For middle iron shots the weight should be 50/50 or equal on each foot. For your longest clubs, place 60% of your weight on the backside foot. This will help you swing the club on the correct angle on the back swing. The Final Setup Positions Always practice proper alignment out on the driving range by placing two clubs down on the ground parallel to each other after you feel you are properly aligned to your intended target and see how well you are lined up. Better yet, while on the golf course ask your playing partner to stand behind you and see if you are properly aligned. The best way is to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional just on alignment. They are the experts in the game.

Dress to Impress with eTailors BY STACEY BOMSER
I
f you thought custom-made clothing was strictly for celebrities and dignitaries, think again. Weston-based eTailors is making the old-fashioned tailoring experience accessible to all men, offering custom suits, sports jackets, pants and shirts. Head Tailor Len Ventresca explains how eTailors merges the style and fit of custom-made clothing with the convenience of online shopping. What is eTailors? eTailors provides the old-fashioned tailoring experience of obtaining custom-made suits and dress shirts in the convenience of your home or office. With a wide selection of the finest fabrics and over 500 styling options, our products are meticulously handcrafted to fit you and your lifestyle.
What is your experience? eTailors launched in January 2018, but our skilled team offers countless years in the menswear industry. I am a third-generation tailor and first-generation Italian-American. I have been studying and teaching bench-made clothing my entire life. What is bench-made clothing? Bench-made is oldschool terminology for hand-made clothing where a tailor sat down on a bench and sewed the garment all by hand. The quality of bench-made clothing can not be compared to a ready-made suit. If you would like to compare apples to apples, you can compare our quality of garments to Brioni, Kiton and Tom Ford. Who is eTailor’s typical customer? Our clients are entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, executive professionals and men who are looking to dress better than the expensive store-bought clothing. 84 AUGUST 2018 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
Why shop eTailors over a menswear store or department store? Many men do not fit into the standard cut of suits today, especially with all the trim-cut suits in the marketplace. Not to mention the selection of patterns, fabrics, and styles they have to choose from at eTailors. Our whole mindset is we want our customer to dress appropriately for their industry but stand out in the room. Why would someone want a custom suit or dress shirt? Many men cannot find comfort in an off-the-rack suit or shirt. Once a man wears a garment made to his specific measurements, he will experience comfort like he has never felt before. Beyond that, he gets to choose the fabric he likes and the style he prefers. With eTailor, every piece of clothing is handcrafted to fit you and your lifestyle. Please describe the eTailor process. We start with a consultation. This can be done in person or over the phone. We like to find out first what our customer’s needs are. For example, is the suit for a special occasion or is he seeking a whole new wardrobe, or somewhere in between. We also try to find out why they are unhappy with store-bought clothing or their prior tailor, what fit issues they have, etc. The consultation can take 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the customer’s needs. The next step is the fitting. This can be done in the convenience of your home or office, or at our Weston showroom. Once one of our tailors has taken your specific measurements, we will present you with our wide selection of fabrics and styling options to create your custom-made suit or shirt. Our experts will guide you through this selection process using the information you provided during your initial consultation. What are some of the customization options available to eTailors clients? Our fashion designers are all experts in men’s apparel. We have over 500 unique styling combinations available in our swatch books. From our wide range of fabrics to collars, cuffs and other tailoring details, our experts will guide you through every step of the custom clothing process. Why order a custom suit? With eTailors, you can forget about standard suit sizes. As a matter of fact, there’s nothing standard about our custom-made suits. Each measurement taken from your body is recorded with great accuracy to guarantee a precise fit. In addition, eTailors offers styling options perfect for work or special formal events. We have a wide range of high quality wool fabrics in an array of colors and patterns. For warmer climates, like here in South Florida, we also offer a magnificent wool and linen blend that gives you the look of linen without the hassle of wrinkles. Why order a custom dress shirt? With eTailors, the days of wearing a dress shirt that does not fit perfectly are over. Using your exact measurements, each dress shirt is made from the ground up. No more store-bought shirts that are too baggy, too tight, too short or too long.
Our shirts are not only meant to fit your body, but your sense of style as well. Part of the shirt design process includes choosing the fabric that best fits your needs. Our extensive fabric selection comes from the best mills from all over the world. This has allowed us to be able to offer many styling options for you to choose from. Our portfolio includes solids and textures as well as patterns like stripes, checks, plaids and novelties. We can also customize your collar, cuffs, tails, plackets, pockets, backs and contrasts. Don’t get overwhelmed; our experts will guide you through every step of the process. How long does it take to receive your custom suit or shirt? Making a tailored garment is no easy task. It takes time and dedication to handcraft each garment to fit your exact need. This process usually takes between six to eight weeks from when the order is placed, depending upon the origin of the fabric. Just know that when you receive it, you will love it!
Anything else you would like to add? eTailors is South Florida’s tailoring experts. Our goal is to provide an easy and convenient way to experience the old-fashioned way of obtaining a tailored garment without the hassle of going to a tailor, because our tailors come to you. With eTailors, you can forget about owning a suit or shirt that does not fit your exact measurements as every piece of clothing will be handcrafted to fit you and your lifestyle perfectly.
eTailors n The eTailor’s showroom is conveniently located at 1565 North Park Drive, Suite 104, in Weston. To learn more about eTailors visit www.etailors.com or call 954-633-8661 to schedule a consultation.
ASK THE EXPERT
Unexpected Cavities BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN lmost daily, we have a child come in to our office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their six month checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is helpful to look at the underlying causes of cavities. In order to form a dental cavity, there are certain ingredients which are a must. First of all, cavity causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus Mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time). The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Therefore, the main players are bacteria, sugar, and acidity. We recommend brushing and flossing to reduce the quantities of bacteria and remove sugars left behind after meals. Fluoride can be used to strengthen the enamel. Xylitol products are showing some promising data in the ability to limit the effectiveness of the bacteria. Still, a person who brushes/ flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities depending on intake of certain foods and liquids. As it turns out, consumption of sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods and beverages we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. After a little digging, we usually find out that the unexpected cavities are preceded by the intake of acidic beverages. The bad news is that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium. Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats but rather to modify eating habits and limit the periods of exposure to certain foods. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. We recommend rinsing with water after consuming acidic drinks as it is very effective at balancing pH. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. Snacks eaten between meals should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating!

1. Sleeping with two pillows under your head is better for you than sleeping with one. FALSE: Whether you sleep on your side or on your back, using two pillows under your head will force your spine into an abnormal position. In the short term this abnormal spinal position can cause muscle and ligament soreness, tightness and fatigue. Eventually, chronic spinal problems may result. Sleeping with one pillow is better, and a correctly contoured “cervical” pillow or small cervical roll is best. Contoured pillows or cervical rolls provide optimum support for your neck while sleeping, and help to maintain normal cervical lordosis (spinal curvature in the neck) and spinal alignment. 2. Sleeping on your stomach is one of the least healthy positions in which to sleep. TRUE: Lower back and neck pain are two of the more immediate and obvious signs that “stomach sleeping” is not good for you. For some people, sleeping on their stomach may not produce symptoms for months or years. Unfortunately, when symptoms do start poor sleeping habits are usually well established and spinal problems have become advanced. The preferred position in which to sleep - in terms of both comfort and spinal health - is the fetal position (on the side with knees and hips bent slightly) with a thin pillow between the knees. This will help maintain the back in neutral position, and minimize early morning low back stiffness. 3. The best position in which to read in bed is to lie on your back with your head propped up high. FALSE: Chiropractic doctors treat many patients with neck and upper back problems that are the direct result of poor postural habits. A common postural mistake involves the habit of lying on one’s back with the head propped up while reading or watching television. This position forces the head and neck into extreme sustained flexion, causing compression of the spinal discs, stretching of the spinal cord and cervical nerves that come out of the cervical spine, and abnormal tension on the posterior neck muscles. In small doses, such stresses are normal and easily accommodated by the body. The problems begin when these positions become habitual or a regular part of one’s routine. Repeated and long-term postural abuse will almost invariably cause chronic soft tissue damage, spinal distortions and accelerated spinal degenerative change. The best position in which to read while in bed is the same as when you are sleeping - lying on one side with the head and neck in a neutral position. For a consultation or more information, contact Dr. Rick Behar and Dr. Marc Browner at Windmill Health Center in Weston at 954-217-4881. They have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Contact the Weston location for more information.
PET CARE
Flea and Tick Prevention BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM
F
leas and ticks are external parasites that can cause extreme discomfort for your pet and can also cause serious diseases.
Fleas
Fleas are insects that are ubiquitous in the environment—meaning they can be found almost everywhere. There are more than 2000 species of fleas, but the common cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the one that most commonly afflicts dogs and cats. A disease of concern that can be caused by fleas is flea allergy dermatitis (FAD), which is a severe allergic reaction to flea bites. Some pets are so allergic that even a single bite can cause a reaction. FAD makes pets miserable. In severe cases, it can cause severe itching and inflammation that, if left untreated, can lead to excessive scratching and chewing that can damage the skin. Secondary bacterial or fungal infections can develop as a result. Finally, in very severe infestations, particularly in old, ill, or young animals, fleas can remove
so much blood through feeding that they can weaken the animal.
Ticks
Ticks are not insects, but they are closely related to spiders, scorpions, and mites. There are approximately 80 tick species found in the United States, but only a handful of them are of real concern to pets and people. Some of these include the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), and the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis). The brown dog tick is the only species that can complete its entire lifecycle on a dog and can infest homes and kennels. Tick bites can be painful and irritating, but the real concern with ticks is the number of serious diseases they can transmit, such as Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. These diseases can cause significant illness and even death in both pets and people.
How Do I Know If My Pet Has Fleas and/or Ticks?
Larger tick species can typically be
seen or felt in the hair coat, especially once they are engorged after feeding. Deer ticks, on the other hand, are very tiny—about the size of the head of a pin in some stages—and can be harder to see. Repetitive scratching is a telltale sign that your pet may have fleas. Adult fleas can be identified on the pet, but fleas in other stages of their life cycle (eggs, larvae, and pupae) can be harder to find. Adult fleas are tiny and can be hard to see, but flea combs can be used to remove fleas as well as flea dirt. Flea dirt is essentially flea feces, which is digested blood. To check your pet for fleas, run a flea comb through your pet’s fur and dump any hair and debris onto a white paper towel. Dampen it slightly with water. Any small, dark specks that stain the towel red are a clear indication your pet has fleas. Finally, excessive grooming is also a sign of a potential flea problem. Infested cats will groom themselves repeatedly in an effort to remove fleas. Never use flea control products intended for dogs on cats. Some medications can be highly toxic to cats. Only use products on the species for which they are intended and follow all label instructions. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. Look and Feel Your Best with Figurella BY STACEY BOMSER
G
et the figure you’ve always wanted at Figurella. For more than 35 years, women across Europe and Latin America have used this exclusive, Italian, non-invasive body shaping method to lose weight and reshape and tone their bodies with long-lasting results. Now the revolutionary Figurella Method is available to women here with the opening of its newest location in Weston. Owner Andrea Alvarado shares more about this unique body shaping service. Please explain the Figurella program. Our program is tailored to each woman’s body, priorities and needs. We begin with a free, one-hour consultation in which we analyze the client’s body shape by taking precise measurements. This is used to determine a personalized Figurella program to reach the desired goals and objectives in the most efficient way. Figurella provides fast, long-lasting and natural results without exhausting diets or surgeries. How does the Figurella Method work? It is comprised of three steps which are performed during each session. The first step involves a 30-minute session of active work-out in a thermal bubble, where each client performs localized, low-impact exercises designed specifically to reach her goals. The

entire session takes place at a constant temperature that enables the body to dissolve localized adiposity, reduce cellulitis and increase muscular tone. After an invigorating shower, the next step in the program is a full-body, 15-minute oxygen bath in one of our patented oxygen shells. Pure oxygen permeates the body tissue and helps to eliminate toxins. The final step is a one-on-one meeting with your personal assistant who will guide you, motivate you and ensure that you meet your goals. Each client is provided with a qualified, motivated and trained personal assistant. What can customers expect to find when they visit Figurella? Figurella is a truly unique place, run by women for women. Unlike weight-loss centers or stereotypical gyms, Figurella is a sheltered place where women can relax and feel pampered by our staff, while at the same time lose weight and reshape their bodies.
What differentiates Figurella from other weight-loss centers? Figurella offers a very personalized, one-on-one service that is tailored to each women’s personal goals and needs. In addition, Figurella guarantees realistic, attainable results, since our method is based on objective, scientifically-sound methodologies that have been experienced by thousands of women in Europe and America. The Weston location is our seventh in South Florida. What other services do you provide? We offer full-body and facial massages with our latest generation Cellushape equipment. This relaxing treatment, which is performed by our licensed massage therapist, helps improve lymphatic circulation and helps to reduce the appearance of cellulitis. n Figurella is located at 1040 Weston Road, Suite 307, in the Chase Bank Building. HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Functional Medicine is the Best Approach for Well Being BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP
I
f you are tired of going to your primary care doctor’s office every few months to get a prescription refill for your current medical condition, it may be time to change doctors. Conventional medicine continues to deal with chronic illness by targeting symptoms without really taking the time to investigate what is causing the problem in the first place. This is the biggest difference between a traditional medical practice and the type of service you will find at a functional medicine office. Functional medicine focuses on the patient as a whole and not just on symptoms. Our mission is to study the patient’s medical history as well as family history and all possible factors that are contributing to disease so we can treat the root cause of the problem. It is all about recreating balance. Do not get me wrong. There are conditions that are so serious they must be addressed immediately, but this doesn’t mean we should ignore the origin of the disease. If we only treat symptoms and ignore the underlying causes, we enter a never-ending cycle of pill-popping that will eventually affect organs and other areas of health. If a patient comes in with high cholesterol, for example, we do need to immediately rush for the prescriptive medication to treat the condition, rather we need to investigate what is causing the anomaly. Is it the family history or the patient’s lifestyle - in many cases it is a combination of factors. Changes in lifestyle, diet and nutraceuticals may be enough to control cholesterol so it is critical we identify the possible triggers and emphasize the importance of “prevention.” A traditional doctor will tell patients that they need to eat healthier, but many patients don’t even know where to start or what “healthy” even means. At a Functional Medicine Practice, lifestyle -including your food choices - are part of the conversation at every visit, because we can’t ignore the importance of these factors in overall wellness and health. One growing area in the medical field is that of hormone replacement. This is where Bellissimo Medical stands out as a functional medicine practice, as we specialize in BioIdentical Hormone Replacement Therapy for both men and women. This treatment has been used effectively worldwide since the 1930s and numerous scientific studies have proven its effectiveness. However, patients need to work with qualified practitioners, because hormones are a delicate subject and not everyone is trained to provide this service. Bio-identical hormones, also known as natural hormones, are substances that have the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by the human body. Because these are naturally occurring substances that are found in us all, they produce the same physiologic response and there are virtually no side effects. Although they can bring about many health benefits and improved quality of life to those who need it, we will never prescribe hormones unless absolutely necessary. We will evaluate the patient’s current health condition and learn about their medical history to be able to develop a comprehensive program that targets unique needs. Hormone levels are tested before, during and after the treatment to ensure these are maintained at optimum balance. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. Visit www.BellissimoMedical.com.
