Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
E
xplorer Ponce de Leon discovered Florida in 1513, claiming the land for Spain. Five hundred years later, settlers from Spanish-speaking countries continue to call Florida home. In fact, almost 30% of the population in Broward County and nearly 70% in Miami Dade is Hispanic. That is why National Hispanic Heritage Month is especially meaningful here in South Florida. Observed from September 15th to October 15th, National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Throughout the month, there will be numerous events and celebrations taking place, such as the Hispanic Heritage Festival at Miramar Regional Park on September 16th, a Hispanic Heritage Concert at the NSU Miniaci Performing Arts Center on October 8th, or the Hispanic Heritage Month Festival on October 14th at the Pembroke Pines Branch Library featuring food, music, crafts, and storytelling. Experience all that the region has to offer by taking advantage of the calendar section in Our City magazine. Each month we include a curated list of diverse community activities and events, which appeal to a wide range of people and interests.

Ninety-nine photographers submitted pictures taken in the greater Weston area or during their travels. “We were very excited to see such diversity in this year’s entries,” stated Arts Council President Jami Nix Rahn. “There were so many amazing entries that it was a difficult task for myself and the other judges to select the winners.” In addition to Nix Rahn, who is a professional artist with paintings and sculptures in public and private collections around the world, the other judges were Lisa Botto Lee, an award-winning fine artist whose work is currently included in the Allied Artist of America’s annual show at the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York, as well as professional photographer Steve L. Romero. All three judges are Weston residents. “It was a true honor to be a judge of such quality photographic work,” shared Romero. “The entries were inspiring to me as photographer and I want to congratulate all the participants for their great work.”

Each of the 99 photo submissions was scored using a detailed rubric of criteria in the areas of technical skills, visual and aesthetic, content and general characteristics. First place was awarded to Barbara Abels for “Home Court Weston”. She received a $100 prize. Kiana Kidder received second place and $75 for her untitled piece. Third place, and a $50 prize, went to Patricia Pedraza for “My Monet.” Pedraza suffers from a rare eye disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa, that in most cases leads to blindness. She shared that she has always loved art, but never had the chance to pursue it professionally. She says winning this award has been very special to her and she encourages everyone to do what they love in life. Her picture was taken at Markham Park and the people seen in reflection are her family. The Arts Council also awarded a $50 prize to the photograph which received the most Likes on Instagram. That went to Pearse Koch for “Under the Moon.” Three Honorable Mention certificates were also presented. An exhibition of the winning photographs, along with a selection of the top entries, is currently on display at the Weston Branch Library, through the end of the month. You can see all 99 of the entries on Instagram at #artscouncilweston.

Standing Ovation for Weston Philharmonic Society’s Summerfest Concert COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
M
ore than 150 music lovers enjoyed the Symphony of the Americas’ Summerfest concert, presented by the Weston Philharmonic
Society. In a program titled “A Musical Journey,” musicians and soloists from around the world, joined by Symphony of the Americas’ strings musicians, performed pieces by Vivaldi, Mendelssohn, Ravel, Williams, and more, under the direction of Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese. The highlight of the evening was the world premiere of Prelude and Fugue for Guitar and Orchestra. It was composed and conducted by Lorenzo TurchiFloris, the Summerfest composer in residence for the past six years. He wrote the piece for Swiss guitarist Alessio Nebiolo, who is critically acclaimed as one
of the world’s best young guitarists. Nebiolo also wowed the audience with his performance of Vivaldi’s Concerto for Guitar and Strings in D Major. Weston Philharmonic Society Co-President Lou Marett says it is a privilege to have Weston as one of the stops on the Summerfest concert tour, which is now in its 26th year. “We are pleased and proud to be a venue for this international music program which brings world class musicians from here and all over the world to perform and teach throughout the United States and South America. Temple Dor Dorim is a unique and intimate setting for this event. Because of this, many attendees say this is their favorite concert in Weston.” Proceeds from the concert will go toward underwriting the Weston Philharmonic Society’s In-School Music Program, which brings world-class musicians to Weston elementary schools twice a year. More than 6,500 students are exposed to fine music when professional musicians explain their instruments and perform a mini-concert for the children. The Weston Philharmonic Society is currently finalizing plans for its 2017-2018 season. The legendary Dallas Brass returns to Weston on February 24, 2018. America’s foremost musical ensemble will take the stage at Cypress Bay High School, accompanied by talented student musicians. It promises to be a night
to remember. On March 11th, the community is invited to enjoy an evening of music under the stars when the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra performs its free outdoor Pops Concert at Weston Town Center. This annual event has grown to be a community favorite, with all ages tapping their toes and humming along to a collection of popular classics and show tunes. he Weston Philharmonic Society presented Weston City Commissioner Toby Feuer with its 2017 Platinum Circle Award for outstanding service to the arts. A Weston resident since 1988, Feuer is serving her second term as a City Commissioner. In office, she has been a constant advocate for the arts, attending various programs and working to provide both support and funding for cultural events in Weston. “Through the Platinum Circle Award, the Weston Philharmonic Society has begun a tradition of honoring those individuals who make special contributions to furthering music performances in Weston and insuring the continuation of the In-Schools Music Program and scholarships to graduating seniors continuing their music studies in college,” explains Weston Philharmonic Society Co-President Andrea Burghardt. “Toby is a shining example of someone who has contributed to the arts in our community. In her role as a city commissioner, she has advocated for and participated in our cultural events. We are proud to have her as a Board member.” In this role, Feuer has worked to help find venues for Weston Philharmonic Society events. She has also helped spread the word about fine music in our community to the other organizations in which she participates. Along with her fellow city commissioners, Feuer provides both enthusiasm and funding for current and new events within the City of Weston. During the Platinum Circle Award presentation, Feuer was acknowledged for her understanding of the importance of the arts to our community, particularly the children. education programs, Feuer participates in the Student Artist Showcase sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Weston, giving freely of her time to recognize the importance of art in the schools. “We are proud to have this distinguished, capable and caring woman, who gives back to her community so competently in so many ways, as part of the Weston Philharmonic Society,” states Co-President Lou Marett. Feuer is quite active in the Weston and Broward County community. Since moving here nearly 20 years ago, she has held the positions of Vice President of her condo association, President of the Presidents’ Council of the Bonaventure community, Vice President of the Weston Democratic Club, Vice President of the Broward Coalition, member of the Broward County Advisory Committee on the Commission of the Status of Women, and member of the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization, representing the City of Weston. She has been a Weston City Commissioner since 2010. Feuer’s earliest leadership roles were as PTA President of her children’s schools in Brooklyn, New York. She also served on the curriculum committee of the school district. Prior to retirement, Feuer worked at Brooklyn College for 25 years. Her interest in education led her to join Women’s American ORT (now ORT America). The non-profit organization provides stateof-the-art STEM instruction via innovative programs that provide youth with a solid foundation for higher education and that give adults knowledge and skills for current industry. Feuer currently serves on the ORT American National Board.

he Broward Sheriff’s Office Police Services Academy is an extension of the Weston University program. About 20 students, ages 11 to 17, took part in the summer program exploring law enforcement services on an in-depth basis with hands-on exercises. The Police Services Academy provides education and safety training, and exposes students to a variety of career paths within law enforcement. Deputy Kari Pallotto led the eight-week program which included tours of BSO SWAT, aviation and marine units. Students were also involved in a wide-range of activities and educational classes on topics such as: introduction to law enforcement; DIU/DARE; tours of BSO facilities; officer safety and introduction to defensive tactics; introduction to the legal system by the Broward State Attorney’s Office; crime scene investigations; patrol services; CPR certification; and internet safety. For students interested in learning more about law enforcement during the school year, Weston BSO offers the Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Explorers Program. It is for young men and women ages 14 -21. The program allows teens and young adults to interact with law enforcement and other community advisors in a serious, regimented atmosphere. Explorers will learn and experience lawful citizenship as they participate, side-by-side with certified BSO deputies, in ongoing training and community service projects. Deputy Kevin Maccagli and Deputy Lynn Garibaldi lead Weston Post 44. Deputy Maccagli encourages students to consider joining the BSO Explorers program. “It is designed to bring out the leadership qualities in young adults. Many of the Explorers, past and present, do not want careers in law enforcement. They participate because they enjoy making new friends, learning new things, and giving back to the community.”

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 9/30/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. he Weston Community Center is your one-stopshop for after-school activities. The Parks and Recreation Department has put together a wide variety of programs sure to appeal to all ages and interests. The schedule features activities focused on the arts, athletics and academics. With its location inside Weston Regional Park, the community center is a natural place for children to take part in athletic and fitness programs. Returning after its debut this Spring is The First Tee golf program. This fun and engaging program for children in kindergarten through third grade teaches basic golf skills and fundamentals through an innovative curriculum developed by The First Tee in collaboration with the PGA, LPGA, Champions Tour and Masters Association. The equipment is specifically designed for young children with oversized club faces, color coded grips, and target-oriented training tools. The Nike Marathon Kids Running Club is the first step to creating a lifelong commitment to physical activity. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade will learn to run/walk 26.2 miles throughout the school year. This fun fitness program sets realistic goals and provides rewards and incentives for reaching those goals. In addition to coordinating the golf and running programs, Kidokinetics brings back its two most popular athletic programs. Kidokinetics Jr. introduces toddlers and preschoolers to physical activity. These classes increase body awareness and help little ones learn coordination and balance while participating in a fun, new activity each week. Kidokinetics helps older children develop important building blocks for life: discipline, confidence, coordination, fine and gross motor skills, and fitness. Participants enjoy a new activity each week in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere. There are programs for ages three to five and ages five to ten. The community center also offers ongoing martial arts classes. In Youth Karate, children learn the basic principles of USA Goju Karate including selfdefense, fighting, and weaponry to build confidence and self-esteem. There are programs for children from ages six to 18. The Inside Out Theatre Company offers performing arts programs for middle school and high school students. The Performance Ensemble is for aspiring
thespians, ages 13 to 18. This class targets serious theatre students interested in fine-tuning their performance skills. The program culminates with the production of the Broadway musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Superstars Dance and Baton is a high-energy class incorporating cheerleading, baton twirling and dance. Students will develop grace, poise and self-confidence. There is a beginner’s program for children ages four to seven or eight to twelve, as well as a Shining Stars competition team. Children are also able to develop their minds at the Weston Community Center. New this year is the Code Explorers program, which offers participants ages four to 13 the chance to learn, explore and continue to develop skills in computer programming beyond their classroom experience. The program focuses upon critical thinking and sequencing using mobile devices. Buildbots Robotics allows students to design, build and program Lego robots to solve amazing challenges. This class combines creativity, design, logic, teamwork, scalability and problemsolving skills. It is for children ages six to 14. Chess Club is another after-school activity that challenges young minds. Chess has been proven to develop mental skills while also improving memory, self-confidence, intuition, concentration, logical and critical thinking, and reasoning skills. Chess Club is open to children ages five to 18 of all skill levels. Fun in Spanish allows children, ages two to five, to learn and practice Spanish in a playful, musical and artistic environment. The SAT Preparation Class prepares students for all facets of the College Board entrance exam. The course reviews content of what is being tested and exposes students to numerous insightful strategies to help them score higher on the SAT. Sessions are available that lead right up to the October 7th and December 2nd exams. There is a nominal fee to participate in many of the programs at the Weston Community Center. Weston Ranks Near Top for Safety and Home Values SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he City of Weston was just ranked #3 in the Top 100 Safest Cities in America. Home ownership here is a safe investment as well, as Weston was named one of the 20 best housing markets for real estate investments. Alarms.org, the official site of the National Council for Home Safety and Security, recently released its list of the Top 100 Safest Cities in America. The national trade association comprised of licensed alarm installers, contractors, and other relevant trade groups evaluated cities across the country based on personal and property safety. Weston ranked #3 on its list with a reported 37 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 621 property crimes per 100,000. Only two other Florida cities made the list: Port St. Lucie at #77 and North Port, near Sarasota, at #92. In case you were wondering, Thornton, Colorado, outside Denver, was #1. This was not the first time that Weston has been recognized as being a safe city. Earlier this year, the National Council for Home Safety and Security ranked Weston as #2 in its Safest Cities in Florida report. In February 2016, NeighborhoodScout ranked Weston as #11 in its list of the Top 100 Photo courtesy City of Weston. Safest Cities in the United States. “Being consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in Florida and the nation does not occur by happenstance,” states Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer. “Weston is fortunate to have the highly skilled men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office protecting our city and we are extremely
proud of their exceedingly effective efforts. Under the superb leadership of Weston Chief Kevin Butler, these diligent, observant and security-focused individuals are ready and prepared to respond to every type of call from an emergency incident to a service focused review of a business’ security measures.” Public safety is one of many factors that affect property values. So, it’s not surprising that Weston was named one of the 20 best U.S. housing markets for investing in real estate. HomeUnion, an online real estate investment management firm, identified 20 ZIP Codes where investors have seen the highest return on investment and minimal risk over a five-year period. To compile the list, HomeUnion calculated the total annualized return, including projected appreciation and cash flow, of single-family rentals for more than 200,000 neighborhoods across the country. Only those markets with an average school rating in the 70th percentile or higher were considered. Weston’s 33327 ZIP Code was among the 20 best housing markets, with a 6.6% annualized total return. The 33327 ZIP Code includes the neighborhoods of Weston Hills Country Club, The Landings, The Falls, The Meadows, and Savanna. Three other Florida ZIP Codes were also included: 34677 in Oldsmar (near Tampa), 33158 in Palmetto Bay (near Miami), and 33434 in Hamptons at Boca Raton. That Palm Beach County suburb saw an annualized total return of 8.1%.

Homeowners can voice their view/ opinion at the public hearings, contact a member(s) of the City Commission, and/or voice their opinions in writing or email. The public has the opportunity to place comments on the record and have their questions answered by the Commission and/or staff. There will likely be little opposition to the proposed budget as it is based on an ad valorem millage rate of 2.3900 mills, for the fourth year in a row. With the increase in property values in Weston, adopting the same millage rate will result in an increase in ad valorem revenues of $1,068,758 because the City’s taxable property value has increased by 5.97 percent. At 2.3900 mills, Weston has the lowest millage rate of all municipalities in Broward County. Although there is no change planned for the City’s millage rate in 2018, residents will notice changes on their tax bill. To account for increases in costs of services, the Bonaventure Development District assessments will increase by 5.73% and the Indian Trace Development District assessments will increase by 5.78%; both districts saw no increase last year. In
addition, the Solid Waste assessment for annual residential automated curbside collection will increase by 2.15% and the Fire Services assessment will increase by 1.66%. Your World Is Here is the City’s theme for Fiscal Year 2018. “This theme reflects a multitude of meanings for our diverse community, yet one common identity. Whether it be residents who have been here since before the City’s incorporation in 1996, or those who have joined us over time from places near or far; when you are home in Weston, ‘Your World Is Here’” explains City Manager John Flint. Some of the highlights of the proposed 2018 budget include:
▸▸ Addition of nine sworn law enforcement deputies ▸▸ Construction of a fourth fire station ▸▸ Design of a new Community Center building at Regional Park ▸▸ Design for a new City park to be named Bonaventure Park ▸▸ Renovations to Indian Trace Park ▸▸ I mprovements to the I-75/Royal Palm Boulevard interchange and the Royal Palm Boulevard/Weston Road intersection to ease daily traffic in and out of the City The budget hearings are the culmination of many months of work. Weston’s budget procedure is an annual process that begins in March with a workshop and continues throughout the year until the budget is officially adopted in September. It includes extensive financial work, research, projections and discussion with all City departments. The City of Weston budget hearings will be held at 7pm on Wednesday, September 13th and Monday, September 25th at Weston City Hall, 17200 Royal Palm Boulevard. The meetings will also be broadcast live on Weston TV and viewable online at www.westonfl.org. Business Tax Receipts are Due this Month BY STACEY BOMSER
A
ll businesses, including home-based businesses, operating within the City of Weston are required by law to have a Business Tax Receipt – and it must be renewed each year on or before September 30th. The Florida Legislature enacted this law to prevent fraud by ensuring that businesses are properly licensed and have met all necessary requirements to operate. Before you open a new business, you must obtain a Business Tax Receipt, previously known as an Occupational License. In order to do so, the business owner must obtain a Certificate of Use issued by the City’s Building Code Services Department, submit a Business Tax Receipt application either online or at City Hall, and submit payment within 30 days. The cost for a Business Tax Receipt varies according to the type of business. Business owners can download a copy of the Business Tax Receipt application at www.westonfl.org/media/docs/forms/Business_Tax_Receipt_Application_Form.pdf. It must be submitted along with the following documents: copy of Certificate of Use, fictitious name registration, and federal employer identification. The Business Tax Receipt must be renewed annually. According to Florida State Statute, Chapter 205, Business Tax Receipts that are not renewed by the September 30th due date are considered delinquent and subject to a penalty of ten percent for the month of October, plus an additional five percent penalty for each subsequent month of delinquency until the Business Tax Receipt is paid. However, the total delinquency penalty may not exceed 25% of the business tax. Any individual who engages in any business, occupation, or profession covered by this chapter, who does not pay the required business tax within 150 days after the initial notice of the tax due, and who does not obtain the required receipt, is subject to civil actions and penalties, including court costs, reasonable attorneys’ fees, additional administrative costs incurred as a result of collection efforts, and a penalty of up to $250. For more information about Business Tax Receipts contact the Weston Business Tax Coordinator at 954-385-2000, stop by City Hall, or email BTR@westonfl.org.

BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK
I
t is my distinct honor to congratulate every single public and charter school in Weston, as well as Western High School in Davie, for each achieving an ‘A’ grade issued by the Florida Department of Education for the 2016-2017 school year. This is an exceptional achievement that deserves formal recognition for which the City Commission will recognize each school and principal at an upcoming City Commission meeting. Congratulations to students, parents, teachers, principals, administrators and staff – it really does take a village to raise a child and it shows that you are doing an amazing job. It is no hidden fact, that quality schools are an enormous draw for families and businesses looking to locate within a community which is a significant factor in Weston’s appeal. A great education, within a safe community, surrounded by environmental beauty, superior recreation facilities and access to quality healthcare – who could ask for more? This is but several of the reasons for Weston’s new city tag line: Your World Is Here. Ensuring the quality that is expected by our residents, each September, the City Commission considers and votes on the proposed budgets for the City of Weston, the Bonaventure Development District and the Indian Trace Development District for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins on October 1st. Budget hearings are open to the public and your input is welcomed. Hearings will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 and Monday, September 25, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Weston City Hall. The proposed budgets are available for viewing on the City website. The budgets propose to maintain the current millage rate of 2.3900 for the fourth year in a row. If adopted, the City will continue to have the lowest millage rate in Broward County. Residents can anticipate the City to at minimum uphold the current levels of service in all departments, with increases in law enforcement and the implementation of numerous improvement projects. Proposed are the addition of nine sworn law enforcement deputies; the construction of a fourth fire station; the design of a new Community Center building at Regional Park; renovations to Indian Trace Park and a design for a new City park to be named Bonaventure Park. To ease daily traffic in and out of the City, design improvements to the I-75/Royal Palm Boulevard interchange and the Royal Palm Boulevard/Weston Road intersection are included in these budgets. With the tag line, Your World Is Here - residents can rest assured that they will continue to enjoy the exceptional quality of life expected from a premier city – and more. One of the truly special aspects of life in Weston is our Performing Arts season which runs October through April. Residents will soon receive the Weston @Play Parks & Recreation Guide, which details upcoming events such as the free WestonNights Concert in the Park Series, as well as Community Center class information. As always, be mindful that until November we are in hurricane season. The adage “the first 72 are up to you” means that you have to have the food and supplies to maintain yourself for three days without assistance. I encourage you to continue to be vigilant and prepared for a weather emergency, be registered for CodeRED Emergency Notifications and receive our weekly online newsletter, Newsday Tuesday, to stay informed. Register under E-Notifications at WestonFL.org. For those on Twitter, you can follow us @CityofWeston, as well as on our urgent message only account: @WestonFLAlert. LEGISLATIVE LOOK
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Your World Is Here
F
all is a great time to adopt a new pet. Unfortunately, some scammers promise a new furry friend only to defraud consumers of hundreds or even thousands of dollars. According to Fraud.org, in a typical pet sale scam, a consumer will see an advertisement for an animal accompanied by pictures. The seller will usually offer to ship the animal to the new owner’s location; however, the scammer doesn’t have any pets for sale and is using pictures of animals from the Internet. Consumers should take the following precautions to avoid falling victim to a pet sale scam: 1. Always meet your future pet in person before paying. Insist on seeing the pet in person. If the seller will not allow this, it’s almost certainly a scam. 2. Never wire money for any purchase. Funds cannot be recovered once this kind of transaction is complete. Also, beware of requests to pay by reloadable prepaid card, gift card or other unusual payment methods. 3. Do your research. Websites and postings that scammers use can appear legitimate because they often copy photos and language from reputable breeders. 4. Check references. Do your own due diligence about the background of the seller. A good place to start is the American Kennel Club and the Humane Society of the United States. 5. Don’t trust “free pet” offers. Scammers will sometimes use the offer of a “free pet to a good home” to ensnare an adopter into paying for bogus vet bills or fake shipping costs. 6. Make sure their pet shipper is legitimate. Ask for the name and contact information of the shipping company they intend to use. Call to verify that they are legitimate and have a relationship with the breeder. The Florida Pet Law provides standardized health requirements for dogs and cats being sold or transported. According to the Pet Law, the animal should be examined by a licensed and accredited veterinarian no more than 30 days prior to the sale of the pet. Under certain conditions, it provides buyers with recourses if it is determined that the pet was unfit for sale at the time of purchase. According to the Better Business Bureau and other consumer advocates, the puppy scammers don’t have any real dogs for sale. They pirate puppy photos from other online locations, then weave the poached pictures with heartwarming stories to draw people in. If they start getting heat, they readily change identities. If you are on a tight budget, or you really need to find a pet quickly, please consider visiting a local pet shelter. Many animals end up in these places that need the love of a good family. Many will have been left on the street, abused, and all have been rescued. Many are destroyed because no home can be found for them. You will not only help to save the animal, buy you will be doing something that will make you and your family feel great. f you thought about selling your house this year, now may be the time. Nationally, the inventory of homes for sale is well below historic norms, and buyer demand is skyrocketing – partly because of the pent-up demand from the “bubble” (20052011) and from people who are coming out of the Northeast to settle in South Florida. In high school, students learned the concept of supply and demand: The best time to sell something is when supply of that item is low and demand for that item is high. That defines today’s real estate market. Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist at the National Association of Realtors, recently commented, “Buyer interest is solid, but there is just not enough supply to satisfy demand. Prospective buyers are being sidelined by both limited choices and home prices that are climbing too fast.” Yun also stated, “Current demand levels indicate sales should be stronger, but it’s clear some would-be buyers are having to delay or postpone their home search because low supply is leading to worsening affordability conditions.” In this type of market, a seller may hold a major negotiating advantage when it comes to price and other aspects of the real estate transaction, including the inspection, appraisal and financing contingencies. As a potential seller, you are in the driver’s seat. Let’s look at Weston. The Months of Inventory based on Closed Sales in June 2017 was 4.4 months. That’s up 10% compared to the last month and 29% compared to the last year. 4.4 months of inventory for homes in Weston is extremely low and can lead to total “buyer” frustration. There are currently 412 single-family homes for sale ranging in price from $290,000 (a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1-car garage, non-waterfront in the Country Isles Garden Homes community) to $8.5 Million (a Windmill Ranch estate). The median priced home is $664,900 and is in Emerald Estates. There are 86 homes are priced under $500,000 – leaving 326 homes priced over half million dollars. ▸▸ Homes For Sale: 349 units. Up 3.3% compared to the last year. ▸▸ Homes Closed: 80 units. Down 18.4% compared to the last year. ▸▸ Homes Placed under Contract (Pending): 68 units. Up 7.9% compared to the last year. ▸▸ Average Sold Price per Square Foot: $210. Down 4.1% compared to the last year. ▸▸ Average Days on Market: 53 Days. Down 15.9% compared to the last year. ▸▸ Sold/Original List Price Ratio: 93% of their Originally Listed Price! ▸▸ Average For Sale Price: $942,000. Up 3% compared to the last year. ▸▸ Average Sold Price: $605,000. Down 6.1% compared to the last year. 481 homes have sold in Weston since January 1, 2017, and 97 of those homes were purchased with cash. The highest closed price was right at $3 Million in Windmill Ranches. What about Broward County’s Single-Family home statistics? The months of inventory county-wide is lower than Weston – only 3.5 months. Whether you are looking to upsize or downsize, now is the time to put your home on the market. Mortgage rates are slated to rise; therefore, a buyer’s buying power will be affected – especially if that Seller now becomes the Buyer in South Florida. Phyllis M. ou have planned, saved, and moved into your home. The last thing you are thinking about is your house catching on fire. There are two household items that you may have never imagined that can attribute to this emergency: the washing machine and the clothes dryer. The National Fire Protection Association estimates annually 15,970 home fires involve clothes dryers or washing machines. What is even scarier is between 2010-2014 an estimated 13 civilian deaths and 440 civilian injuries were identified. I believe knowledge is power and with a few washing and dryer safety considerations, we can make our
homes that much safer.

Washing Machines
The statistics of washing machine fires are only four percent, but they are fires none the less. The main attributing factors were a mechanical or electrical failure of some sort. The technology in washing machines has changed; the center agitator has been replaced with a newer design. At one time the center agitator’s mechanical part could fail and create a potential fire concern. Due to better designs, the main safety tip is to make sure your electrical outlets are GFI’s and that the electrical outlet area is clear. It also may be a good idea to have your washing machine installed and serviced by a licensed professional to help limit the potential fire hazard.
Dryers
The leading factor to the ignition of home fires involving clothes dryers was failure to clean the lint filter screen and dryer vent. The filter screen is your easiest option, but the dryer vent which is located in the back of the dryer is not often thought about. You do not necessarily need to call a technician to come and clean this vent, but it is a good idea to have it installed by a licensed professional. Local hardware stores have affordable tool kits made just for this type of job.
Guide for Maintaining a Safe Dryer
There can be many signs that your dryer may need to be cleaned, as well as how to complete the task. Here are a few signs to pay attention to that might help: ▸▸ When the drying time for your clothes progressively takes longer. ▸▸ When your clothing and the outside of your dryer are extremely hot. Remember, your dryer is insulated and to feel the heat coming outside of the dryer isn’t normal. ▸▸ A burning smell can be a significant tip. Trust your senses! ▸▸ When the outside vent hood flap doesn’t open properly. It’s important to note that there is a flap that doesn’t allow the outside environment into your dryer vent. If there is buildup of lint, the flap may not open as it should causing a fire hazard. ▸▸ Lastly, if you have not inspected or cleaned your dryer vent in the last year. One implementation maybe to inspect every six months after you clean the vent. This will allow you see how much build up occurs. By taking some of these simple safety considerations, you can add another layer of home fire protection. For more information, please contact Assistant District Fire Chief Jason Smith at Fire Station 81 (954) 389-2015 or by email at Jason_Smith@sheriff.org.

he Weston FC Boys’ and Girls’ U12 competitive soccer teams travel to New York this month to represent the United States in the Danone Nations Cup World Finals. It takes place at Red Bull Arena, home of Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls. Established in 2000, the Danone Nations Cup is the world’s largest soccer tournament for players ages ten to twelve. Over 2.5 million children participate in the annual tournament, with just 500 players from 32 countries advancing to the World Finals. The road to the international tournament was exciting for both Weston FC teams. This was the third time in seven years that the Boys’ U12 team won the Danone Nations Cup. The Girls’ team won the inaugural All-Girls national tournament that Danone Cup hosted this year. In addition to the prestige that comes with playing in this premier international tournament, the Weston players had the privilege of appearing in a promotional video for the Danone Cup. Tournament Ambassador Abby Wambach spent time interacting with the players in a training session. The video was filmed

NFL Players Inspire Kids at Weston YMCA’s Sports Extravaganza COMMUNITY NEWS

T
he YMCA of South Florida and New Orleans Saints Running Back Travaris Cadet teamed up to provide campers with a Sports Extravaganza at the Weston YMCA Family Center. More than 450 children, plus members of the Cypress Bay Lightning football team, took part in the program which featured inspirational speeches and actionpacked activities. The day began at the Event Stage in Weston Regional Park with a welcome from Weston City Commissioners Thomas Kallman, Toby Feuer and Byron Jaffe. Kallman shared stories of his children’s positive camp experiences, but noted they never had the opportunity to interact with NFL professionals who embody what the Y stands for: dedication to health, mind, body and leadership. Cadet then took the stage, delivering an encouraging speech about his dream of becoming a professional football player and stressing to the campers the importance of developing a strong work ethic at an early age. That message was reinforced when other NFL players took the stage, sharing their words of encouragement with the campers before the skills clinic. Cadet was joined by NFL colleagues Demetrius McCray of the Seattle Seahawks, Jonathan Freeny of the New England Patriots, Gabe Holmes of the Oakland Raiders, Brian Dixon of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Brandon Dixon of the Pittsburg Steelers. Throughout the day, campers took part in various activities focused on agility, speed, coordination, and teamwork. In addition to teaching the kids New Orleans Saints Running Back Travaris Cadet partnered with the Weston City Commissioners Tom Kallman, sports skills, the NFL players stressed the importance of leading a healthy South Florida YMCA to present Toby Feuer and Byron Jaffe welcomed the Sports Extravaganza. campers. Immigration Attorney Fights for Victims’ Rights
A
ttorney Elizabeth Blandon has committed her career to helping victims of abuse, both political and domestic, make a life for themselves in the United States. It’s a calling that is near and dear to her heart, as she is the child of Cuban immigrants. The longtime Weston resident says immigration law was a natural fit. “I wanted to help good people, like my parents, who wished to make the United States the home not of their birth, but of their choice. Immigration law impacts people’s lives forever.” One of those people was Marco Coello. As a student, Coello attended a political protest in Caracas, Venezuela. Even though he did not participate in any violence, Elizabeth Blandon, Esq. he was arrested and tortured by authorities while in custody. Blandon says the abuse was so atrocious it was documented by Human Rights Watch. Facing certain death in his home country, Coello escaped to the United States and applied for political asylum. “His case made international headlines, including the front page of The New York Times, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested him at the Miami Asylum Office instead of interviewing him,” explains Blandon. “It was heartbreaking to see this young man, with fear and panic in his eyes, as he was taken away to a detention facility. Knowing his history of being tortured while
detained in Venezuela, I knew we had to move heaven and earth to get him freed as quickly as possible.” Blandon and her team immediately started working on legal motions and contacting media, legislators and community leaders. Thanks to the public attention and their fast legal response, Coello is now free and no longer in deportation proceedings. Blandon says she looks forward to the day when she can stand by her client’s side during his asylum interview. In addition to immigration law, Blandon dedicates much of her time to working with victims of domestic abuse. She says that is a real concern in immigrant communities. “Abusers have an added level of control with immigrant women, often threatening to have them deported and telling them they will never see their children again,” explains Blandon. “These women feel trapped and hopeless, afraid to report abuse to authorities due to their immigration status. I can give them a lifeline to break free from the cycle of control and abuse.” In addition to representing victims, Blandon trains advocates to work with survivors of domestic violence. She, and her staff, also volunteer with non-profit organizations such as Hispanic Unity to serve the immigrant community. Blandon Law also sponsors college scholarships for foreign-born students. “I want to make sure that immigrant students have the same opportunities that I was blessed to have,” she notes. Blandon is the recipient of the Broward County Hispanic Bar Association’s Bravo! Award for leadership in public service and the Broward County Bar Association’s 2017 Section Chair Award for her numerous educational seminars and volunteer activities. She is also active within the legal community. Blandon is Chair of both the Asylum Committee for the South Florida chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Immigration Section of the Broward County Bar Association. She serves as Vice Chair for the Florida Bar Immigration BoardCertification Committee.

Soccer Coach Prepares Players for the Game of Life BY STACEY BOMSER
G
abriel Renteria has dedicated his life to teaching young people. The former high school teacher is now a full-time soccer coach for the AYSO Region 644 Weston – Select Elite Training Program for its U8, U9 and U11 groups. It’s a job he takes seriously – teaching players soccer skills as well as important life lessons. Last year Coach Gabe introduced Make Your Own Ball Day to Weston. Players and parents had to create a makeshift soccer ball using duct tape and recycled materials, which the players then used to play a barefoot 3vs3 tournament. Through this program, the Weston players learned that it many parts of the world children play with makeshift balls and no cleats.
“For one night, we use and see soccer as a window into all social economic levels, all races, and raise our level of empathy to one of giving and understanding,” explains Coach Gabe. “One of the most important talks and literally eye-opening conversations we have right before we play is the examples of now professional players who grew up in those conditions and how their willpower and work ethic allowed them to reach total success. We discuss that regardless of resources, everyone should be judged based on their values, actions, morals, and positive impact they have had on this earth and how they make us feel.” With a greater understanding of how fortunate they are, the players are asked to donate lightly used or new soccer equipment. AYSO works with the Game Time Foundation to deliver the donations to children in Colombia. Coach Gabe says by participating in Make Your Own Ball Day, he hopes his players gain a deeper respect for all people regardless of how different their life might be. “By the time our players graduate, some will have done the project five times, which we by that time hope the lessons have become a part of them and something they think about in their everyday life. To live in love with life and to help others not only
close by but also worldwide.” Make Your Own Ball Day is just one of many programs Coach Gabe has planned this year as Director of Cultural Affairs for the AYSO Region 644 Weston – Select Elite Training Program. Other projects include letters of gratitude, player journal, Player of the Month awards, Friday interleague competition, juggling badges, headband Fridays, and Yoga Daze at Weston Select. Coach Gabe’s efforts are being recognized outside of the Weston community. He was named a Miami FC “Coach of the Match”. In addition to game tickets and recognition before the match, Coach Gabe received a $500 donation to support AYSO Region 644 Weston – Select Elite Training Program’s cultural efforts. He says it was an honor to receive this award. “Coach of the Match is awarded to coaches who inspire athletes, treat each player as an individual, and help them be the best they can be. The coach is a role model of fair play and sportsmanship for their players to follow.”

Broward Tutorial Services Celebrates Ten Years of Student Success SECTION HEAD BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
BY STACEY BOMSER
S
ince it first opened its doors in 2007, Broward Tutorial Services has helped literally thousands of students achieve their optimum scores on the ACT and SAT college entrance exams. Founder and Owner Michael Eldeiry explains more about Broward Tutorial Services’ programs and success strategies.
What is Broward Tutorial Services? We are
Broward county’s premier test prep company for the ACT, SAT and PSAT. We work with students at all levels to help them reach their highest potential on these critical exams. We offer private and small group tutoring, and we divide our small groups by level when possible. The group classes are limited to eight students, which allows our experienced and professional tutors to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each student. We can create custom groups of two to four students, for students who are at similar levels and want to work together. In addition, we offer six-hour workshops before each ACT, SAT and PSAT exam.
What distinguishes Broward Tutorial Services from other test prep programs?
Test prep is only as good as the tutor you get, so work with the best. At Broward Tutorial Services, we are extremely selective in our hiring, and limit the growth of our company based on our ability to find tutors who meet our standards. Most classes and private lessons are taught by myself or Adam Moss. Together, we
have improved thousands of students’ scores dramatically over the years. We have had multiple National Merit Scholarship winners and many students with perfect scores.
What kind of results can students expect after completing the program? That depends on several factors, obviously, but most of all, on how much work the student puts into practicing the techniques we teach them. It’s not unusual for students who work hard in our class to improve over 200 points on the SAT and five points on the ACT.
What do students learn from your program?
Students learn all the strategies for how to excel on the standardized test they’re taking. We also review the material on the test. Standardized tests cover most of high school math, so students often need to review some things they haven’t seen since middle school. Students also need to learn how to approach these tests, as they are very different from the tests that the students are used to. Students often try to approach these tests like the tests they take in school, since that’s all they know. If they do it that way, they’re going to have a bad time.
Is there anything else you would like readers to know?I have a BS in Biology from Tufts,
as well as an MBA from UNC. I play competitive Scrabble and I’m ranked in the top 20 in Florida. Adam has a BS and an MS in English from UF.
He is a rock star and has played guitar in several bands.
Broward Tutorial Services is located at 2883 Executive Park Drive, Suite 104, in Weston. For more information call 954-667-6500 or visit www.BrowardTutorial.com.

Straight A’s for Weston Schools
SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
W
eston students can take pride in knowing they are attending some of the best schools in Broward County and the State of Florida. The eleven public elementary, middle and high schools that serve Weston all received an “A” grade from the Florida Department of Education for the 2016-2017 school year. Once again, Country Isles Elementary, Eagle Point Elementary, Everglades Elementary, Gator Run Elementary, Indian Trace Elementary, Manatee Bay Elementary, Imagine Charter School at Weston, Falcon Cove Middle, Tequesta Trace Middle, Cypress Bay High and Western High schools have all scored A’s on the state’s school grading scale. Even more impressive, Country Isles, Eagle Point, Everglades, Gator Run and Manatee Bay elementary schools and both Falcon Cove and Tequesta Trace middle schools have maintained straight A’s for the past ten years, 2007 to 2017. Each year, public schools in Florida receive a school grade on an A-F scale, indicating how well the school is performing. School grades are based on a variety of factors, including results from the Florida Standards Assessments and End of Course exams, levels of achievement, learning gains, industry certifications earned and graduation rates. “The school grades are the direct result of the hard work and tremendous dedi-
cation of our teachers, school leaders, students, families, staff members and the entire Broward community,” said Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie. “Our School Board members and I appreciate and thank everyone for their continued support, as we continue to focus on providing all students with a high-quality education and ensure we are meeting the diverse needs of students and families.” The fact that all the Weston schools earned A grades in 20162017 is quite impressive, especially considering only 87 Broward schools earned an A and statewide only 30% of schools received an A-rating. Not only was this quite an accomplishment for Weston schools, it means extra money in their coffers. Schools that make an A grade receive extra money from the state. School grades were first issued in 1999 under the A+ Plan for Education and the program has evolved over the years. Today, annual testing is required as part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. To view how the Weston schools have scored over the years, visit www.westonfl.org/Residents/Schools/SchoolsHome.aspx. Gator Run Teacher Named Bilingual Educator of the Year

ongratulations to Gator Run Elementary Kindergarten teacher Laura Pantin. She is Read Conmigo’s 2017 Bilingual Educator of the Year for Florida. “Read Conmigo values bilingual educators who are passionate about their field and who show a dedication to their students and to the mission of bilingual literacy. Ms. Pantin reflects those ideologies,” explains Gator Run Principal Keith Peters. “She is a shining star in the Dual Language/ Bilingual field and someone who will continue to lead the way for others in education to create bilingual opportunities for Bilingual Educator of the Year Laura Pantin their students.” with Gator Run Principal Keith Peters. One of the reasons Ms. Pantin is so passionate about bilingual education is because she grew up in a bilingual home. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, she moved to the United States when she was six-years-old. She spoke Spanish at home, but English at school. After earning a Masters of Arts in Bilingual/Bicultural Education from Columbia

University, Ms. Pantin moved to Florida to help launch the Dual Language program at Gator Run Elementary in 2015. “We are truly blessed to have Ms. Pantin at Gator Run. She has helped to establish the foundation of our Dual Language program to grow and thrive,” states Principal Peters. “Ms. Pantin has developed her own curriculum and is known outside of our school and outside of Broward County as a leader in the Dual Language field.” Gator Run’s Dual Language program is now in its third year, serving students in Kindergarten through second grade. Each year the school will add another class until it reaches fifth grade. “Bilingual education is an invaluable opportunity for students to not only acquire native-like fluency in a second language, but also grow empathy and expand their perspectives on other cultures and communities,” shares Principal Peters. “Our program allows for students who are native Spanish speakers to interact with students who are native English speakers or who are speakers of other languages, which offers a unique classroom environment that allows students to learn from each other as well as help each other along the journey.” Gator Run utilizes Read Conmigo as a complement to its dual language curriculum. Its mission is to “promote biliteracy one family at a time.” It does this by providing bilingual story books for parents to read with their children. Principal Peters say parents, as well as educators, can subscribe and receive the free books, either digitally or in print. “Since this is a great and easily accessible tool, teachers of our Dual Language program utilize it as a supplement to their lessons in class and also inform parents of this great tool that they can access at home with their children.”

Okapi Wanderers Captures Third Consecutive State Championship COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
A
nother year, another win for the Okapi Wanderers Rugby Club. It’s U14 team was crowned state champions at the Florida Youth Rugby Union tournament, after defeating the team from West Pines. Four other Okapi teams also played in the state finals: U10, U12, Junior Varsity, and Varsity. That’s quite an accomplishment for a team that’s only three years old. It took home three state championship trophies last year. “We are so very proud of what we accomplished,” states Mariana Gallo, Okapi Wanderers Rugby Marketing Chairperson. “Not only because we have won many titles, but because we are building such a great group of young athletes who are learning rugby values of sportsmanship, dedication and community service, and demonstrating these values on and off the field.” The Okapi Wanderers Rugby Club is an officially sanctioned sports league by the city’s Weston Sports Alliance. Rugby is the fastest growing sport in the United States. Youth Rugby participation has increased over 25 percent in the past three years, and its popularity skyrocketed after rugby returned to the Olympic Games last summer after 92 years. Registration opens next month for the Okapi Wanderers 2017-2018 season, which runs October through May. The Okapi Wanderers Rugby Club accepts players as young as six-years-old. It offers divisions for school-age players (U8, U10, U12, U14, Junior Varsity and Varsity) as well as a College division and Men’s and
“Old Boys” league, for ages 35 and up. The teams practice and play at Tequesta Trace Park. “We welcome new players. No experience is necessary,” states Gallo. “Our coaches will teach you everything you need to know about the game. Since we have a minimum of two coaches per division, it is easier to focus on each player.” Outside of the regular rugby season, each summer the Okapi Wanderers Rugby Club partners with the Weston YMCA Family Center to offer a summer rugby camp. It focuses on fundamental and progressive rugby skills. In addition to teaching new players, the Okapi Wanderers Rugby Club is committed to training new referees. This past summer, it hosted the Florida Rugby Referees Association’s Level 1 course. Seventeen individuals became new rugby referees. Gallo believes one of the reasons rugby is so popular is because it promotes respect. “Respect for the referee, the opposing team and your teammates is the top priority. Friendship, sportsmanship and camaraderie is what differentiates rugby from any other sport. These values make it appealing to both players and parents.” To register or for more information on the Okapi Wanderers Rugby Club visit www.okapiwanderersrugby.com or email info@ okapiwanderersrugby.com.

KAPOW Program Expands at Imagine Charter School
SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER

T
his is the third year sixth graders at Imagine Middle School West will participate in KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work). The program has been so successful that this year the fifth grade Bi-Literate classes at Imagine Charter School at Weston will also take part in the program. Through its unique business and school partnerships, KAPOW exposes students to career opportunities and helps them connect what they are learning to their futures in the workplace and life. For the past two years, Imagine sixth graders have learned about the medical field through the school’s partnership with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The program consists of seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by hospital volunteers in the classroom. The program culminates with a field trip to the hospital where students can see the various career opportunities in action. According to Middle School Team Leader and KAPOW Coordinator Patricia Roach, during the field trip students learned about bone fractures and orthopedics radiology. Students learned how patients are assessed and what they do in the urgent care center and the different emergency departments. The children had the chance to listen to each other’s heartbeats. The students learned about drawing blood and how blood pressure is taken. The children also got a chance to sit in an ambulance and see all the different emergency equipment. “KAPOW builds on the child’s young imagination and enthusiasm for learning, encouraging the child through the business volunteer-led activities to understand and learn workplace skills and to make the important connection between school and work,” explains Mrs. Roach. “Through Imagine’s partnership with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, the students learned
SEPTEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON
that there are many opportunities in the medical field. They are encouraged to dream big!” Principal Nadine Laham says she is pleased her school is able to participate in KAPOW. “Most students are unaware of the various opportunities and skills and sub-skills that are needed for many different fields. For instance, medicine and health careers have many avenues that can be explored. It’s not just becoming a doctor or a nurse. KAPOW’s monthly program activities and culminating field trip activates their imaginations and exposes them to some of the many possibilities.” KAPOW is just one of many career readiness programs available to Imagine students. The school also participates in Junior Achievement. All fifth-grade classes visit JA BizTown while eighth graders have a culminating activity at JA Finance Park. “Students need exposure and hands-on experience in order to know,” shares Principal Laham. “This year Imagine Weston is introducing a Business Professionals of America program and club for middle school students.” For more information on KAPOW, or how your school or business can become a KAPOW partner, contact Program Director Tania Reynolds at 305-338-5548 or email taniakapow@gmail.com.

hould I have my child’s wisdom teeth extracted? This is a question I am asked frequently, especially at the end of orthodontic treatment. The question is very logical. We have been working to align the teeth for two years and everyone is excited to unveil their new smile to the world. The last thing that anyone wants is to leave the wisdom teeth to spoil our great work. On the other hand, the extraction of third molars is usually carried out by an Oral Surgeon using some form of sedation. The decision to refer must be thought out and based on science. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the decision to avoid extracting the third molars (AKA Wisdom Teeth) depends on their meeting the following criteria: completely erupted and non-impacted, completely functional, painless, free of decay, disease-free, capable of being properly cleaned. As can be seen from this list, the academy of oral surgery leans heavily toward extraction. This list fails to aid in my decision making in most cases as the average teen completes orthodontic treatment between 13-14 yrs old and the wisdom teeth erupt between 17-21 years old.
ASK THE EXPERT
W
e live in a cul-de-sac in Weston, surrounded by young families. The circular swale in front of our house is a racetrack for young kids and their bicycles, skateboards, and pretty much anything on wheels. On July 4th every year, we close off the street, wheel our barbecue grills and smokers from the back of our homes to the front, set up picnic tables to accommodate all the food, and join our neighbors for a block party. When the sun goes down the fireworks come out and we end a great day having celebrated “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” as the Declaration of Independence instructs. The families in our neighborhood came from around the world to celebrate a document that proclaims, “All men are created equal.” We are from Peru and California, Mexico and New York, Sri Lanka and Chicago, Colombia and Venezuela. We even have Florida natives and a proud Tennessee Volunteer! We are from big cities and towns so small that they have only one traffic light. We are from different places but what unites us is our children. It’s important for children to grow up confident of their own identity, respectful of other people, and aware of the rich diversity of their community and world. Teaching tolerance is important not just because it is part of our American heritage, but because the person who learns to be open to differences will have more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life. Tolerance means respecting and learning from others, valuing differences, bridging cultural gaps, rejecting unfair stereotypes, discovering common ground, and creating new bonds. Tolerance, in many ways, is the opposite of prejudice. Tolerance does not mean that all behaviors have to be accepted. Behaviors that disrespect or hurt others, like bullying, or behaviors that break social rules, like lying or stealing, should not be tolerated. Tolerance is about accepting people for who they are, not about accepting bad behavior. Here are some tips about how you can teach your children to be tolerant:
POSITIVE PARENTING
Teaching Tolerance and Respect
Should I Have My Child’s Wisdom Teeth Extracted?
▸▸ Notice your own attitudes. Do you demonstrate an attitude of respect for others? ▸▸ Remember that kids are always listening. Be aware of the way you talk about people who are different from yourself. Do not make jokes that perpetuate stereotypes. ▸▸ Be mindful when choosing movies or books. ▸▸ Answer kids’ questions about differences honestly and respectfully. ▸▸ Acknowledge and respect differences within your own family. Value the uniqueness of each member of your family. ▸▸ Help your children feel good about themselves. Kids who feel badly about themselves often treat others badly. ▸▸ Give kids opportunities to work and play with others who are different. ▸▸ Learn together about holiday and religious celebrations that are not part of your own tradition. ▸▸ Honor your family’s traditions and teach them to your kids – and to someone outside the family who wants to learn about the diversity you have to offer. When parents encourage tolerance in their children, talk about their values, and model the behavior they would like to see by treating others well, kids will follow in their footsteps. What I prefer to use as a guide is the anatomy of the mandible (lower jaw) and the developmental stage of the third molars. For example, there is a nerve that runs the length of the lower border of the mandible called the inferior alveolar nerve. Among other things, this nerve provides for our feeling in the lower lip. The third molars develop right over this nerve and it is not until around 15-16 yrs old that the roots of the teeth tend to approximate and sometimes even wrap around the nerve. I allow the third molar to grow and hopefully find a reasonable eruption path prior to the completion of development of its roots. If I find that there is too much pressure being placed on the 12 year molars, I will refer for evaluation prior to the full development of the roots. What this accomplishes is the removal of the third molars with a much reduced chance of damage to the nerve. As in most situations, timing is everything. Our protocol consists of consistent retainer wear as soon as braces are removed. We then monitor the third molars until they either come in or are removed. Consistent retainer wear is more than sufficient in maintaining that beautiful smile through the process. In fact, we are recommending long term night time wear of the retainer even if the third molars are removed. As it turns out, the eruption of the third molars is the most well known, but not the only factor which can cause shifting of the teeth over time. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
Progesterone Is Beneficial for Women BY JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
P
rogesterone is beneficial for women and should be included in any Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) regime. As women begin to age, the ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone. The result is a hormonal imbalance than can wreak havoc in a person’s life if is not treated. This is also the time when women turn to their doctors in hopes of finding some relief. The uncomfortable symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, weight gain and low libido. As a woman, it is important to be educated on the facts and ensure your HRT is safe, effective, and most importantly, right for you. HRT is a controversial topic, even amongst doctors. That’s because HRT is a complicated process and it is certainly not a one-size-fits-all kind of treatment. Typically, doctors will prescribe an estrogen-only therapy to their patients or a combination of estrogen and progesterone or progestin, which is a synthetic form of progesterone. Knowing the origin of the hormones prescribed is vital when following a HRT regime. Not all hormones are created equal. Bio-identical hormones, also known as natural hormones, are substances that have the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by the human body. These are the ones you should be taking rather than the synthetic forms, which can cause negative side effects. The use of estrogen-only therapy versus including progesterone is also a topic of debate. Women are prescribed a combination of estrogen and a progestin, because progesterone can prevent cancer in the uterus. Unfortunately, also because of this, women who have had a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) are placed on estrogen-only therapies. This is a mistake and should be avoided. More and more studies continue to show that regardless of whether a woman has a uterus or not, HRT should include progesterone, not progestin, due to its many benefits, which include better sleep, weight loss, neuroprotection, reduced risk of several types of cancer as well as a reduced risk for heart disease and osteoporosis. When taken before and during pregnancy, progesterone is associated with a reduced incidence of birth defects. It is important to understand that a hormonal imbalance is not caused solely by a lack of estrogen in the body; the problem arises when there is a dominance of estrogen with a progesterone deficiency. The study of hormones is complicated and requires extensive training because altering hormones will trigger reactions in the body and also change other hormones, but if done correctly, it can improve quality of life. With the increased popularity of hormone replacement services, your primary care doctor’s office may not be the best place to seek treatment. When dealing with hormones, it is critical to work with a specialized practitioner to ensure safety and efficacy. As a functional medicine practice, Bellissimo Medical specializes in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy and our goal is to ensure your body has an adequate balance of testosterone, progesterone and estradiol, even if you have had a hysterectomy. Manatee Bay Students Learn Valuable Lessons Through Performance BY STACEY BOMSER
SCHOOL NEWS
“F
ree to be You and Me” is the theme this year at Manatee Bay Elementary. Students are encouraged to be themselves and accept others for who they are too. Part of the groundwork for this was laid last year when Ms. Haley’s and Mrs. Stokes’ fourth grade classes presented plays promoting social skills and anti-bullying messages. “I have a great passion for reaching the whole child in the climate of high stakes testing,” explains Ms. Haley. “Fourth grade standards include speaking and listening, and what better way to teach those skills than through a play?” Ms. Haley’s homeroom performed Bullies Anonymous, which explored the actions bullies take (physical, verbal, social and cyber) and provided effective tools to prevent bullying, while Mrs. Stokes’ class performed Social Skills, which taught students the importance of listening to others, learning body language and social cues, and thinking before they speak or act. Both plays were written and composed by Bad Wolf Press. This project was entirely student-driven. Ms. Haley says the children were expected to learn their lines and songs by a certain date, and work with their groups to develop costumes, set and props, and choreography. She says at one point she almost cancelled the plays because of lack of preparation and effort from several of the students. “This led to a serious conversation and an open floor classroom debate. They took it on themselves, each sharing how they felt. They were open, honest, and exposed.” The following day, the classes were invited to watch a play by Mrs. Jefferson’s homeroom. After seeing how well those students had worked together, Ms. Haley says her students quickly decided they could as well. “They started chanting, ‘If they can do it, so can we!’ Students who knew their lines started helping those who didn’t. Some groups asked others to show them some dance moves. Others joined forces to sketch out their costumes and prop pieces. What happened before my eyes was unbelievable!”
In the end, the classes put on impressive performances for their parents and other classes. “The play was an integral part in building my daughter’s confidence for future public speaking opportunities,” shared Mary Hartnett. “It was also instrumental in showing the children how important each role is in a team atmosphere. Everybody has to do their part for it to work out in the end.” Diana Guarin said being part of this performance was an enriching experience for her son. “This was a much better way of learning than a regular and traditional approach to realize the importance of having good social skills.” The plays’ messages about preventing bullying and interacting appropriately with others were not lost on the children. Following the final performance, Mrs. Jefferson’s class was asked to stay behind to provide feedback. “Students shared with each other what they liked about their plays and made suggestions on what they could do to make future performances even more stellar,” explains Ms. Haley. “For teachers, this may have been the most amazing moment – seeing the students compliment and encourage each other.”

Young Drummer Wins National Award for Original Composition BY STACEY BOMSER

A
lessio Mazzi has been playing the drums since preschool. The Indian Trace Elementary fifth grader is now an award-winning composer. He won a Merit Award in the National PTA Reflections program for his original composition, Born A Musician.
Alessio says he has composed a few pieces over the years. Born a Musician was actually his third piece for Reflections. “The theme was ‘What is Your Story.’ Born a Musician is about how I evolved from playing Elmo beats to Zeppelin and Queen,” shares Alessio. “I told my story through music and the many different ways I play music around my house, including furniture, pots and pans, my chest, my feet, and even my drums.” He says it felt awesome to win the Merit Award. “It made me so happy to have an award from Nationals. I am very grateful and excited!” Alessio plans to enter the contest again this year. “I will definitely be doing Music Composition and trying out Film Production.” When he’s not playing his drums, Alessio plays soccer and swims competitively. Although he loves music, he thinks it will remain a hobby. “I want to study medicine and science, but I also want to be a soccer player like Paulo Dybala and an Olympic swimmer like Michael Phelps.” Until then, Alessio will continue drumming, with classic rock being his favorite genre of music to play. He encourages other kids to pursue their passions as well. “If you want to be where I am, never set a limit. You are good enough,” states Alessio. “All you need is to work hard and put effort to be the best of the best of the BEST of whatever you like.”

PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the following categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts. Indian Trace Elementary School Principal Amy Winder says she is extremely proud of Alessio and his accomplishment. “We often get students who move on to the State level, and once in a while have a student place at the State level, but to have a National winner is extremely exciting. Alessio is such a talented musician. His family and entire school family are so proud of him.”
Weston Brothers’ Rock Group Reaches Worldwide Exposure BY STACEY BOMSER
A
family vacation to celebrate their grandfather’s 80th birthday inspired two Weston brothers to paint the town. Brett and Brendan Baldwin discovered a painted rock while in Tampa. It brought a smile to their faces and they thought this simple act of kindness could do the same for others. This past summer, the boys began painting rocks and hiding them around Weston for others to find, spreading happiness and beauty along the way. Brendan, a fifth grader at Eagle Point Elementary, says he likes seeing the surprise on people’s faces when they discover one of the rocks. “I think it is funny to watch the people and see their reaction. They usually laugh and pick it up and like it, which makes me feel happy.” Older brother Brett, an eighth grader at Tequesta Trace Middle School, thought it would be a good way to unite the community. “I wanted to bring the community and the world together, one rock at a time.” The Junior National Honor Society President also saw this as a form of community service. “Junior Honor Society is about helping the community, and I

thought the rock hiding might bring the Weston community together, make people happy, and would be a good way to promote our school’s group.” Although this started as a family project, the boys soon recruited their friends to help. They hosted paint-
ing parties and encouraged everyone to express their creativity. Every rock is unique and designs include everything from birds and bugs to the Minions. Each rock is tagged with a note instructing the finder that they can keep the rock or re-hide it for someone else to find. Although relatively new to Weston, the painted rock phenomenon has gone global. The boys wanted to be able to track how far their goodwill has spread so

like most kids their age, they turned to social media. With help from their mom, the Baldwin brothers set up a Facebook page called “Our World Rocks” to track their rocks. Within a matter of weeks, they had nearly 200 members. Originally, most of the rocks were hidden in Weston, but they are now beginning to travel near and far. Brett and Brendan hid rocks at rest stops and welcome centers, and the at the beach, during a family road trip to Ocean City, Maryland. Family friends have also been playing along, with the Stone family hiding a rock at the Lego store in Disney Springs. So far, rocks have been found around South Florida and as far away as Seattle, Washington, Tucson, Arizona, and Glarus, Switzerland. One of the group’s rocks was found by Crystal Hurst in Summerfield, Florida, near Ocala. She is now a member of “Our World Rocks” and has started her own hometown rock club. The boys say keep your eyes open when you’re out and about: “See our rocks and pick them up…all day long you will have good luck!”

Ophthalmology Services For My Enlightening 30-Year Journey as an Ophthalmologist
W
BY ALAN D. MENDELSOHN, MD, FACS
hen I completed my fellowship training at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 1987 and began practicing ophthalmology in Hollywood July 1987, I was part of a new wave of ophthalmologists who brought the exciting technique of out-patient cataract surgery to Broward County. Our predecessors would admit patients to the hospital the night prior to surgery and keep them hospitalized for an additional night following surgery. Avoiding the hassles and expenses of hospitalization was attractive, but even more advantageous was avoiding the risks of hospital –induced infections. Out-patient cataract surgery became an almost instant success.
Outpatient Cateract Surgery
For the next decade, those of us on the “cutting edge” of cataract surgery in Hollywood were doing cataract surgery by a procedure called Extracapsular Cataract Extraction whereby we removed the nucleus of the cataract in its entirety. This necessitated that we make a large incision in the eye. The cataract was removed, followed by insertion of an intraocular lens (IOL). At the completion of surgery, five to seven sutures were required to close and secure the surgical incision. The eye was pressure patched. For the next three weeks, we encouraged our post cataract surgery patients with the following refrain: “Do not bend, do not lift, do not exercise, do not exert.” Finally, after three weeks our patients could become “free agents” again and resumed their normal lives. We began suture removal in the office, and by the sixth post-operative week the patient received a final new eyeglass prescription. The IOLs utilized in that era provided fairly good distance vision, but eyeglasses were needed to see near and intermediate distances, with fine tuning of distance vision.
“No Stich” Cateract Surgery
While moving cataract surgery to an out-patient basis was considered revolutionary at the time, an even bigger milestone transpired with the transformation of cataract surgery in the mid to late 1990’s to a highly improved technology called Phacoemulcification (phaco). Instead of removing the cataract nucleus in its entirety, with a hightech ultrasound we could break up the nucleus into tiny fragments and suck them out. This paved the way to tiny incisions in the eye and the advent of “no stitch” cataract surgery. Phaco brought quicker, safer, and better visual outcomes to the cataract surgery arena. With great pleasure, on the very first post-operative day, I was now able to encouragingly tell my patients, “You can now bend, lift, exercise and resume 100% of your activities!” Even more importantly, post-operative edema, infections, and inflammations plummeted with the new technology. Cataract surgeries were now routinely scheduled two weeks apart instead of two months apart. Concurrently, there have been remarkable enhancements in the instruments that we utilize pre-operatively in the office to ascertain the optimal custom fit intraocular lens for any given patient. The quality of these high tech ophthalmic devices and ultrasounds utilized pre-operatively for Iens determinations, as well as the expertise of the staff actually making the measurements, are of paramount importance for excellent visual outcomes.
30th Anniversary
From the onset of my career in 1987, through to the present time, we have been blessed with newer generations of intraocular lenses (IOLs) which provide superior vision. Another career milestone occurred within the past ten years with the arrival of the multifocal ReStor IOL. With the ReStor IOL, we can generally correct most patients’ cataracts
and enable them to see near, far, and everywhere in between without the aid of glasses or contact lenses. The ability to read, drive, work on the computer, and see without glasses is an incredible freedom that was never possible with traditional monofocal lenses. My journey in the world of cataract surgery in Hollywood has now hit three decades as I had my 30-year anniversary of practicing ophthalmology on July 1st! Perhaps the most incredible landmark and noteworthy step on this journey has been the landmark transformation in cataract surgery to the new era of laser-assisted cataract surgery that has commenced in earnest in the past five years. Femtosecond laser cataract surgery is highly reproducible, far more accurate, and far safer than older techniques of cataract surgery with a scalpel. The laser offers excellent precision thereby producing the absolute best visual outcomes in current cataract surgery. Furthermore, patients with low or moderate levels of astigmatism can have this astigmatism eliminated or greatly reduced at the same time as the cataract procedure, resulting in a markedly enhanced quality of vision and overall outcome. In essence, this is customized laser cataract surgery utilizing high-tech 3D imaging and tailoring the ultra-precise treatment to the unique size and shape of your eye.
My Own Cataract Surgery
On a personal note, even though I am a cataract surgeon, naturally I am not exempt from developing cataracts myself. In fact, in 2014, at age 56, I began to notice the litany of complaints that I have heard from my patients. First, I noticed that while driving at night, I was not as comfortable or confident as I was driving during the day. Second, oncoming headlights became bothersome, and eventually so did the rising or setting sunlight in my face
Dr. Alan D. Mendelsohn
while driving. Third, I had always been an avid reader, able to read small print journals or novels for hours at a time prior to the inception of my cataracts. But in 2013 and 2014, I noted that reading tiny print became more of a chore and challenge, curtailing my reading duration. Finally, and most importantly by far, I needed to be positive that my vision was excellent to examine my patients and perform surgical procedures. I decided that it was time to proceed. In July 2014, I was the personal beneficiary of the wonderful transformations of modern ophthalmology that I described. I had advanced laser cataract surgery with the insertion of an ReStor lens in my right eye, with the same procedures to my left eye the following week. My vision is now phenomenal! I wore eyeglasses starting at six years of age and then began with contact lenses around age 13. Until age 56, I needed glasses or contact lenses for everything! Now, for the past three years, I wear no glasses, no contact lenses, nothing. Of course, I practice what I preach and always wear sunglasses with UV400 blocker and polarization outdoors during daylight hours for ocular protection. My quality of vision and depth perception are the absolute best of my entire adult life. I am delighted! Now at age 59 and feeling like the bionic man, I look forward to my next decade serving the community as an ophthalmologist on this thoroughly enlightening journey!

Startling New Research On Headache BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER
I
n recent years, several major scientific studies and discoveries have been published that, together, appear to challenge the traditional medical model of headache: In 1995, the respected research journal Spine published a European study that established cervicogenic headache (headache caused by neck problems) was equally as common as migraine. Only recently has the medical community even acknowledged that neck problems may contribute to headache. Also in 1995, one of the foremost medical journals in the field of headache, Cephalalgia, reported on a British study that found almost half of headache patients in fact suffer from cervicogenic headache. This supports the results of another study where 48 percent of patients diagnosed as having migraine actually had cervicogenic headache. Knowledge of the mechanisms involved in cervicogenic headache has improved dramatically in recent years. One example is a research paper published in the medical journal Headache, in which two American neurosurgeons describe the various structures most likely involved in cervicogenic headache. Most important of these are the three uppermost nerves in the neck, and the joints, muscles, ligaments and other structures these nerves innervate. Another example involves a dramatic new discovery of an anatomical connection between muscles of the upper cervical spine and the spinal cord. These medical “discoveries” reinforce what chiropractic doctors have said for years: many headaches are the result of spinal problems that can be corrected or improved through chiropractic adjustments.
Recent medical research from Syracuse University in New York has identified the trigeminal nerve (a major nerve in the head which descends to the upper levels of the neck and spinal cord) as being a key factor in many headaches. They discovered this nerve can be irritated by problems with the joints and other structures in the neck. Commenting on this research, a Toronto anesthetist and pain specialist acknowledged in Canada’s largest daily newspaper that “Chiropractors were right - many headaches are caused by damaged structures in the neck, and scientific evidence proves it.” Many headaches, perhaps as high as 80 percent, previously thought to be tension or migraine headaches, are actually rooted in neck problems. Where there is a structural or biomechanical problem that will respond to spinal manipulation, this medical doctor refers the patients for chiropractic care. In the Journal of the Neuromusculoskeletal System (1995), a joint medical and chiropractic research team from Italy reported on management of cervicogenic headache using chiropractic care. The study revealed frequency, duration and intensity of headaches, as well as consumption of pain medication, began to decline immediately upon initiation of chiropractic treatment. These results were maintained even one month following the end of treatment. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knockkneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is

severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot. I
n medicine today, the incorporation of holistic therapies and integrative medicine techniques are growing rapidly in virtually all fields of practice. As medicine turns to more alternative treatments and complementary therapies, the question that becomes rather natural to ask in my specialty of medicine is: How does plastic surgery fit into a world of holistic and integrative medicine? It’s a great question and here is some perspective from a plastic surgeon. Many physicians today, both personally and professionally, apply a holistic and integrative approach to their own health and wellness as well as for their patients. This stems from a more modern way of thinking that instead of just treating every ailment with some drug or medical procedure, we can incorporate complementary, holistic and integrative therapies at the same time. Given this perspective, over the last few years some plastic surgeons, although not many, have begun incorporating some holistic and integrative techniques. Let’s start with a very basic concept about plastic surgery. From a practical point of view, plastic surgery itself is not holistic or integrative, that is just a fact. The reality is that with anti-aging medicine and people striving to take better care of themselves both internally as well as externally, cosmetic surgery is here to stay. So how can a doctor take a holistic approach to plastic surgery with their patients? A plastic surgeon with a holistic approach can use techniques to complement procedures with natural preparations and postsurgery healing strategies. The art of plastic surgery procedures is not just in the medical procedure or treatment itself, but also in the way the physician helps their patients prepare themselves for procedures and the way they advise a patient to take care of themselves when healing. What does this really mean? A plastic surgeon who incorporates integrative techniques encourages patients, if time permits, to begin preparation four-to-six-weeks prior to surgery. A typical prep could include working with a nutritionist for weight loss and overall health improvement, acupuncture treatments for improved pain management, reiki for stress reduction, and vitamin supplements and homeopathic medications before surgery to improve wound healing. Other times they will recommend a nutritional detox and/or lymphatic drainage. How a surgeon approaches each patient differs, but my experience over the years is that holistic and integrative preparation prior to procedures usually results in a quicker, less painful healing experience. Getting the mind and the body working together prior to surgery helps most patients heal after surgery. As important as the procedure is in plastic surgery, the healing process is just as important. From the beginning of patient contact, a physician’s office can be proactive by introducing holistic and integrative approaches to assist with healing. These non-traditional techniques, as a follow-up to cosmetic surgery procedures, may be one of the reasons that a patient may want to choose one plastic surgeon over another.

Rebuild Your Putting Confidence BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL

T
oo many golfers believe that if they start the round putting well, then their confidence will grow. This is a myth. You should start your round with confidence so you immediately start to hole short putts on the first green. It’s imperative you are confident from the beginning and absolutely certain you will not miss a short putt, otherwise allowing a build-up of disappointment and frustration from the outset can lead to a loss of concentration and poor play. Have you ever played a round and suddenly found yourself holing everything under the sun and before you know it you feel like you just can’t miss? You have an inner belief that you will sink every putt. You hole a good putt early on and this Dean Sklar, PGA builds momentum. The hole seems like a bucket and you just can’t miss. Your confidence is sky high. Unfortunately, this putting success is often short lived and typically only lasts for one round. How do you go about recreating that putting streak and confidence? It’s crazy to think having positive thoughts will turn you into a confident player. It is not enough to simply hole a few putts on the practice green before you go out to play. You need to earn that confidence, so that it is ingrained into your mind and body, leaving you no doubt that you can hole a putt wherever you are playing, whoever you are playing with, and with whatever is at stake. There are reasons for spending time on the practice green minutes prior to teeing off, but they should not be confused with trying to instill a sense of confidence in you before your round. It might be a hard pill to swallow, but there really are no shortcuts to building the confidence you need to putt successfully. You need to focus on your target, not your stroke. If you improve your putting stroke, your putting will naturally improve. Golf manufacturers try to sell the latest putting gadget, telling the golfer they will hole more putts with an improved putter. Falling for this means the golfer misses the point that putting is a target orientated activity. Like throwing a ball, putting is a reaction to a target not a mechanical action. When tossing a ball to someone, you do not concern yourself with the mechanics of how far you pull your arm back, you simply let your subconscious take care of this. Putting is exactly the same -- you have to focus on your target. Too many golfers get caught up in analysis whereby they concentrate on too many mechanical details and miss the big picture. If you catch yourself thinking too much about your putting stroke, pick up your ball and throw it. As you do this, focus entirely on your elbow and see how that works out for you. Probably not well. This is why you should not get confused with the technicalities of your putting stroke, such as watching the putter head. Focus on your target and not your stroke.

Daily Disposables: A Healthy and Convenient Choice
I
’m sure you’ve heard your eye doctor talk about daily disposable contact lenses; contacts that are single-use lenses, removed at the end of each day. A fresh new pair is applied daily. They have been recently gaining popularity in the Optometry world due to the comfort, health, and convenience benefits they offer to patients. Many people are so used to keeping a pair of contacts for two weeks to a month, that when they think of daily disposable contact lenses, it seems like a waste. Daily disposables tend to be a little costlier, but when you factor in the amount that you save on the contact lens cleaning solutions, it breaks even. Aside from the cost and elimination of maintenance, daily disposables exceed in benefiting the overall health of your eyes. Patients often hear the terms, daily wear and daily disposable. However, keep in mind that these are two different terms. A daily disposable lens, which is what is highly recommended by your eye doctor, is a lens that must be replenished and disposed of EVERY day, because it is not FDA approved for extended wear. A daily wear lens is a lens that is worn daily, however not throughout the night. Daily disposable lenses are highly recommended by eye care professionals for certain reasons.

The more frequently contact lenses are replaced, the healthier and more comfortable your eyes will be in the long run. Your tears contain protein, calcium, lipids, and other substances which overtime can build up on your lenses. As time goes on, the buildup makes the lenses become less and less comfortable. This exposure to protein buildup can lead to infection. There are certain protocols that can be done to help clean the lenses, but keep in mind that these aren’t 100% effective. Some of these deposits remain on the lenses and accumulate over time. Your eyes encounter airborne allergens that can cause irritation when they bind onto the contact lens. Since daily disposables remove a lot of room for maintenance-related operator error, they’re less likely to produce infections. Daily disposables tend to be a lot thinner than normal daily wear contact lenses to add comfort. With them being thinner, they tend to carry on less allergens and particles. They also provide a lot more oxygen to the eyes. Because of the thinness of these lenses, they are only meant to last no more than one day. With the fast-paced lifestyle our generation faces daily, the choice of switching to a daily disposable lens seems to be more beneficial. Daily disposables offer a better advantage in comfort, maintenance, and health. With our eyes constantly exposed to polluted air and harmful UV rays, which could cause discomfort to the naked eye, it only seems right that we take advice from our eye care experts and switch over to daily disposables. The Relocation Dilemma
2017 bestof weston

BY EVAN BARON
A
s the cost of living in South Florida continues to increase, many individuals consider moving to an area which they can better afford. In addition, many of the residents of South Florida are originally from another location, which adds to their desire to move “back home” where they may have emotional and perhaps financial support. Relocating to another part of the country is stressful under most circumstances. If, however, the couple is divorced and there are minor children, the issue becomes much more stressful. The law in Florida allows a parent and the minor children to relocate a maximum of 50 miles from the address where they reside at the time of their divorce. If you ask any Judge who is in the Family Law division, they will tell you that a “relocation” case is the most difficult to decide. For example, let’s say that mom wants to move back to Massachusetts with the parties two minor children. They are either in the midst of a divorce or the divorce has already been finalized. Dad is choosing to stay in South Florida and has no desire or intention to move back north. Can mom move? Can dad stop her? The answer to each of these questions is “perhaps.”

If both parents are involved in the children’s lives, a move of 50 miles can drastically change a time sharing schedule. A relocation of even 10 miles can affect a child’s school district. A change of 50 miles will require, more often than not, a modification of the time sharing schedule. Midweek dinners or morning drives to school with the parent remaining in the area will become impossible. If a move of just a few miles can alter a time sharing plan, imagine how a relocation of hundreds of miles will affect the status quo. The law does, however, allow for a relocation under certain circumstances. The court must weigh the benefit to the minor children, against the effect it will have on the parent/child relationship. It’s true that the relocating parent may experience better financial circumstances if allowed to move, but how will the parent/ child relationship suffer as a result? There are generally no easy answers. The question for a Judge is not how it might benefit a parent, but rather how will the move benefit a child and is it in the child’s best interests to relocate? The most important thing to remember is that a parent cannot relocate with a minor child beyond 50 miles without court order or agreement of the other parent. In reality, even a 50 mile change will usually require a modification to be filed, as long as it affects the current time sharing schedule. The parent seeking to relocate must file a petition and fully inform the other parent of his/her intentions, including the address of new residence, purpose in moving and a proposed long distance time sharing schedule. If you are faced with a possible relocation issue, I suggest you contact an attorney who is experienced in this matter. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

T
he American Council on Exercise recently studied the physical benefits of yoga and found that “the regular practice of Hatha yoga significantly improved the subjects’ flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, and balance, lowered blood pressure and reduced cortisol levels.” Yoga’s emphasis on breathing and the mind/ body/spirit connection also yields strong emotional benefits. People who practice yoga frequently report that they sleep better and feel less stressed. It helps you learn not to concentrate on things you can’t control, but to live in the present. It seeps into the rest your life. You’ll notice you’re handling a stressful event more easily, whether it’s family or work. If you’re finally ready to give yoga a try, here’s how to get started: Move Past the Myths – First give up all the preconceptions that are holding you back. First big myth: you have to be flexible to do yoga. People who aren’t flexible will actually see results faster. Because yoga is a practice geared to helping you become aware of your own highly individual mind/ body connection, it’s perfectly suited to all levels. Take a Beginner’s Class – Look for classes that specify they are for beginners or are “open” classes, which are for all levels. Because there are so many different styles of yoga, you may want to try a few different types of classes until you find what you like best. Hatha yoga is one of the most flowing and gentle options, making it a good starting point; Vinyasa is more athletic; and Yin concentrates on flexibility. The only type that I wouldn’t recommend for beginners is Bikram, or “over 90 degrees” yoga. Don’t Worry About Whether You’re Doing It ‘Right’ – It’s not about doing it better or worse than someone else, it’s about how you feel each stretch in your own body. The only test, according to lifelong yoga practitioners, is how relaxed you can allow yourself to feel. Listen to Your Body – Yoga is a deeply personal practice and no two people can or should hold a pose in exactly the same way. It’s important to work at your own level of flexibility, one that makes you feel challenged but not overwhelmed. Your body will warn you if you are about to get hurt. The key is to listen to your body, push the limits gently, but don’t let yourself be overcome by ego. Allow your body to guide you and be your friend. Concentrate on Your Breath – The goal of yoga is to marry the breath to movement. Most teachers will tell you when to inhale and exhale as you work through poses. Breathe through your nose only, this keeps heat in the body and keeps the mind focused. Concentrating on your breath is the key to yoga for stress management, as it helps you let go of external thoughts and anxiety. The easiest way to bring yourself into the present moment is to focus on your breath. Feel how it goes down your nose and into your body. It helps you let go of the worrying thoughts. Play Dead – Every yoga class ends with corpse pose, a pose designed for deep relaxation. Simply lie on your back with your arms at your side and your eyes closed, breathing deeply. See how easy it is – you’ve learned a yoga pose already. Carolina Sanchez is the owner of Weston Yoga and Wellness Center. It is located at 2600 Glades Circle, Suite 400. The studio will host a Stress Management Workshop on September 9th and 10th from 1-6pm. For more information or to schedule an appointment for wellness services, please call 954-349-6868 or visit www.westonyoga.com.

Rotarians Dedicated to Education
ROTARY NEWS

all means back-to-school, and The Rotary Club of Weston is ready to support, mentor and cheer on local students again. The club has developed enduring and valuable relationships with the community’s schools over the years. Many of the Rotarians are directly involved with local youth through a variety of club-sponsored projects. The Student of the Month program is a member favorite, as the Rotarians always enjoy hearing from our best and brightest young people when they accept recognition and awards from the Rotary club each month during the school year. The club also sponsors Interact Clubs at Cypress Bay, Western High School and The Sagemont School. Rotarian advisors guide the students as they plan community and international projects to benefit others, advancing the principles of Service Above Self. Interactors also volunteer at Weston Rotary Club fundraisers and events. The close relationship between the schools and the Rotarians, not surprisingly, has its basis in friendship. Mr. Neeley, Principal at Cypress Bay High School, Mr. Arrojo, Principal at Western High School, and Ms. Iacono, Upper School Principal at Sagemont School, are all Honorary Rotarians and members of the Weston club. Many of the club’s annual projects are student centric. Harvest Drive, the monumental undertaking where kids help kids each Thanksgiving, is now in its 25th year. From the beginning, Weston Rotarians have volunteered the week of the event helping to transport, sort and distribute food. However, Harvest Drive helps Colombian essay contest winners proudly families in need year around, and show off their first place prizes, awarded so Weston Rotarians assist with by the Rotary Club of Weston to encourage academic excellence and leadership. putting together back packs and

For rural students with little access to computers, winning this contest made a tremendous difference not only in the student’s life, but in the lives of the entire family. In the Rotary world, September is recognized as Basic Education and Literacy Month – a time when Rotarians think about ways to invest in the future through education. Weston Rotarians are dedicated to offering opportunities to young people, whether through college and vocational scholarships, sponsorship of high school Interact clubs and Rotaract clubs for college-age students and young adults, literacy programs, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, or any number of local charities focused on helping young people learn and grow into productive citizens of the world. Do Your Ears Make You Feel Self Conscious?
C
ongenitally prominent ears are a cosmetic deformity that can have a severe emotional and behavioral effect on a child. When a child’s ear protrudes too far from the side of the scalp, a surgical procedure known as an otoplasty can be performed to enhance the position and appearance of the external ear. Five percent of children are affected by prominent ear protrusion. The majority of children genetically inherit the appearance from their parents. Prominent ears can present in a myriad of forms including cup ear, shell ear, bat ear, Machiavellian ear and lop ear. Most commonly children and adults will often camouflage the deformity with hairstyling. Timing of repair can be crucial in avoiding psychological damage. The ear achieves 85% of adult size by age 3 years and nearly adult size by 6 or 7 years of age. As an individual ages, elongation of the lobule (lobe) gives the appearance of continued ear growth. The most common deformity in prominent ears is an underdeveloped or poorly defined antihelix. This is the part of the ear fold that lies inside the outer rim of the ear. The otoplasty surgery is performed through a concealed incision along the back of the ear. Correction of protruding ears uses surgical techniques to create or increase the antihelical fold (just inside the rim of the ear) and to reduce enlarged conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). The cartilage of the ear is reshaped by different suturing techniques. The excess cartilage can be excised and the ear repositioned closer to the side of the head. The procedure usually takes 60 to 90 minutes to perform. It is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia under the direct supervision of a board certified anesthesiologist. The patient can resume their normal activities within three to five days wearing a soft headband for one to two weeks to protect the ears. Ear surgery, otoplasty, offers almost immediate results in cases of protruding ears visible when the dressings that support the new shape of the ear during the initial phases of healing are removed. Children and adults who are concerned about the appearance of their ears can experience both the cosmetic as well as the emotional improvement of otoplasty surgery. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. any couples struggling to conceive know the heartache of infertility and many people are open to trying anything to help them conceive. The good news is that Acupuncture can help. Acupuncture, when used in conjunction with Western treatments, will increase conception by 26%. Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years and is still around today because it works. Infertility plagues approximately 7.3 million women of childbearing age each year. Acupuncture involves the insertion of painless, very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points, when needled, can regulate the way in which the body functions. Acupuncture is similar to physical therapy in that it is a process-oriented method of medical intervention. Patients are commonly treated three to four months before progressing to insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF) or donor egg. Most miscarriages occur within the first three months of pregnancy, consequently patients should continue with treatments up to week twelve. According to John Norian, MD, a reproductive endocrinologist at HRC Fertility in Southern California, “Acupuncture improves fertility by helping blood flow to the uterus and ovaries and the better the blood flow the more likely an embryo is to implant.” Acupuncture can treat many different causes of infertility, including but not limited to thyroid problems (overactive or underactive), PCOS, and idiopathic reasons (unknown cause). Some patients use Acupuncture as their main treatment for their infertility problems while others use it in conjunction. Acupuncture increases the feel-good hormones called beta endorphins which improve the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, which are both very important for fertility and decrease the body’s stress response. Acupuncture treatment reduces stress, increases flow to the reproductive organs and balances the endocrine system, according to several researchers. Acupuncture increases flow to the ovaries and uterus, creating a stronger chance for an egg to be nourished and carried to term. Research has also shown that Acupuncture can increase male fertility, which is 30% of the time the cause of couples not being able to conceive. A study published in 2005 in Fertility and Sterility showed Acupuncture can help treat male infertility by increasing the number of normal sperm and decreasing the number of defective sperm. The goal of an infertility treatment from the Chinese medicine perspective is not just getting pregnant, but to stay pregnant and conceive a healthy baby. Reducing stress is also a key factor in infertility treatments because when men or women are under stress, the hormone cortisol is released in their brain. The change in the brain’s neurochemical balance changes the hormone levels and disrupts the pituitary balance, which is very important to the reproductive cycle. It is very important to see a licensed, fully trained Acupuncture physician for the highest chances of success. Make sure not to use anyone that says they are “certified”, which means 300 hours or less of training and they did not take the National board exam or complete a graduate program.

PET OF THE MONTH
Gum Disease in Dogs BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM
PET CARE
P
“Wendy”
eriodontal disease is a progressive inflammation of the supporting structures around the teeth. More than 85% of dogs over four years of age have periodontal disease. It starts when bacteria form plaque on the teeth. Within days, minerals in the saliva bond with plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria work their way under the gums and cause gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Once under the gums, bacteria destroy the supporting tissue around the tooth, leading to tooth loss. Inflammation of the bone and tooth support structures is referred to as periodontitis. The combination of gingivitis and periodontitis is known as periodontal disease. Bacteria associated with dental disease can travel in the bloodstream to infect the heart, kidneys, and liver. ▸▸ What Are the Signs of Periodontal Disease? The signs of periodontal disease include bad breath, redness or bleeding along the gum line, drooling, which may be tinged with blood, difficulty chewing, pawing at the mouth, lose or missing teeth, facial swelling, especially under the eyes, nasal discharge, and gum recession.
Wendy is a 12-year-old mixed breed. Her favorite person is Dany and her favorite toy is a chicken. Wendy like chasing ducks and cuddling. She also likes to try to fit into small spaces. Wendy dislikes taking a bath and getting her feet wet. Eating is her favorite activity.

▸▸ How Is Periodontal Disease Diagnosed? Your veterinarian can see signs of gingivitis and tartar buildup by examining your dog’s mouth. However, since most periodontal disease occurs beneath the gum line, the only way to truly assess your dog’s mouth is to perform an examination while your pet is under anesthesia. Your veterinarian can use a dental probe to measure any loss of attachment around each tooth and take dental radiographs (x-rays) to assess for bone loss, abscesses, and other problems. ▸▸ How Is Periodontal Disease Treated? Treatment depends on the severity of the disease. If your dog has mild periodontal disease, consisting of gingivitis without any bone loss, a thorough dental cleaning that includes the area beneath the gums, followed by dental polishing, can help reverse the problem. Your veterinarian may also recommend a dental sealant that helps prevent tartar from accumulating on teeth. After a dental cleaning, your veterinarian may also recommend a plaque prevention gel that adheres to the teeth surfaces to inhibit tartar. If there has been a loss of the supporting structures around the teeth, however, this cannot be reversed. Your veterinarian may need to apply antibiotics beneath the gums and perform dental procedures, which may include tooth extraction. Ask your veterinarian which dental diets or treats are best for your pet and what dental hygiene methods are recommended for your dog. Don’t forget to keep scheduled appointments for follow-up dental checkups. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. leveland Clinic Florida is the fastest growing transplant center in the state. This past summer, it reached a major medical milestone – completing its 500th organ transplant. The Weston hospital is Broward County’s largest provider of solid organ transplantation. “Achieving this milestone in four short years is a testament to both the need for transplantation services in South Florida and the caliber of complex care available at Cleveland Clinic Florida,” said Wael Barsoum, MD, President of Cleveland Clinic Florida. “Our team of nationally recognized transplant specialists has done outstanding work to provide the highest quality care and outcomes for
patients in need of adult kidney, liver and heart transplantation.” The United Network for Organ Sharing granted approval to Cleveland Clinic Florida to perform adult liver and kidney transplants in 2013 and adult heart transplants in 2014. Although a relatively new program, Cleveland Clinic Florida has already earned a top five-star rating from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients for providing the best organ transplant outcomes in kidney transplantation. It is the only transplant center in South Florida to achieve this rating for kidney transplants. “I am proud of the kidney transplant team Naraly and Jazmine Serrano prior to surgery. for achieving the five-star rating from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients and the fatigue and rapid weight loss. At Mark at the Park, campers are always ready to play, whether that be card and board games, arcade games during fun field trips, or the ultimate challenge of Color War.

HEARTFELT THANKS
SEEN ON SCENE
Frank Diaz and his family visited Fire Station #81 to personally thank the fire rescue crew that responded to an emergency call when he went into cardiac arrest in his doctor’s office. The staff performed CPR until the EMS crew arrived and was able to restore his heartbeat before transporting Diaz to Cleveland Clinic Hospital. Photos courtesy City of Weston.
SPORTS EXTRAVAGANZA
New Orleans Saints Running Back Travaris Cadet hosted the South Florida YMCA Sports Extravaganza at the Weston YMCA Family Center. More than 450 campers, plus members of the Cypress Bay Lighting football team, attended the event which included skills drills and motivational speeches by NFL players.

WATER SAFETY
All eyes were on the Weston YMCA pool when Florida Blue announced it was donating over $300,000 to support the YMCA’s Safety Around Water programs, which include free swim lessons and mobile aquatics programs. The Weston Y will benefit from a $100,000 grant to the YMCA of South Florida.
