Hurricane Irma
I
t has been a couple of weeks since those dreadful days. We saw our lights go out, the water come in (and out) and the winds blow. For the most part, however, we were ready. We closed our shutters, prepared our hurricane kits, filled our gas cans and gathered our insurance papers. Some of us evacuated, while others hunkered down and waited for whatever Mother Nature was going to bring. Our community did not come out unscathed, but mercifully the center of the storm avoided us this time. After seeing the near total devastation on the Caribbean island of Barbuda, some of us feel a bit lucky. One of the true honors of publishing this magazine is being able to tell the stories of members of our community doing incredible things. We have already heard countless selfless acts from “Hurricane Heroes” across the community. People putting the welfare of their neighbors before their own. We want to tell these stories. If you know a “Hurricane Hero” drop us a note at editorweston@ourcitymedia.com. Help us tell his or her story.

Weston Withstands Hurricane Irma SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

H
urricane Irma paved a path of destruction from the Keys through Marco Island and Naples and on up the coast. While Weston was spared the brunt of her fury, the storm did leave its mark on our community, knocking down trees and scattering debris, not to mention rattling nerves. “As a community, Weston generally made it through Hurricane Irma with minimal damage to landscaping and no major structural damage to any home or building that we are aware of,” stated Mayor Daniel J. Stermer. “Weston, and all of the surrounding community, were very fortunate that Irma changed course before her arrival and it spared us from what could have been a devastating event.” The mayor went on to say how pleased he was with how Weston residents and officials responded before, during and after the storm. “Weston was and remains fully prepared to respond to storms such as Irma and appreciates all of the precautions taken by our residents and businesses in advance of the storm – preparedness is the key. Operationally, Weston’s emergency plan and personnel performed wonderfully and are the best proPhotos courtesy City of Weston. fessionals we could ask for when a storm like Irma visits.” Hurricane season runs through November 30th, so it is imperative that everyone remain vigilant. If you used your supplies, or found you were lacking some emergency items, now is the time to restock. As is the case every time we enter the National Hurricane Center Track Forecast Cone, people go into panic mode and the store shelves are quickly emptied of everything from bottled water to batteries.
The Mayor is now reiterating his message to residents and businesses to be Weston Ready. “Take storm preparation as seriously as we do in city government,” urges Mayor Stermer. “Hurricane preparedness is key and residents must remember the first 72 is up to you. This means you need supplies on-hand to be self-sufficient for your entire family for a minimum of three days (72 hours). You can find preparedness checklists just about anywhere, including the City’s website.” Following the storm, the City of Weston website was a great source for information on everything from debris clean-up to park openings. Communication is key, especially during an emergency. That’s why the City encourages all residents to register for E-Notifications by going to www.westonfl.org/Events/EmailSubscriptions.aspx. If on Twitter, follow the City @CityofWeston and add @WestonFLAlert. This account is strictly for notifications of an urgent nature and was used extensively during Hurricane Irma to pass along critical information to Weston residents. In addition, everyone should have their phone registered with CodeRED for emergency only notifications. For more hurricane preparedness tips compiled by the City of Weston, including a link to register for CodeRED, go to www. westonfl.org/Residents/Hurricane/Default.aspx.
Emergency Operations Center Passes the Test BY STACEY BOMSER

urricane Irma was no match for Weston’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC). In 2015 the City of Weston opened its Administrative Services Center adjacent to City Hall and near the Police Services Building. The building houses Weston’s EOC, which serves as a central command center during a crisis or disaster situation. Although Weston activated its EOC last year for Hurricane Matthew, it was really put to the test during Hurricane Irma, with city and critical staff members holed up inside. The 27,000 square-foot facility was built to the latest hurricane codes and equipped with impactresistant windows and back-up power generators. The building’s second floor is a secure space which

The team monitored the storm, ensured the safety of Weston residents and answered phones in the 24-hour call center. The City also had a representative assigned to Broward County’s EOC and maintained contact with Broward County’s Emergency Managers to coordinate response efforts as needed. As the storm approached, the City mobilized its numerous communications efforts including its new Twitter account, @WestonFLAlert, dedicated to emergency situations. Before, during and after the storm, Weston issued numerous update notices as well as tips on everything from how to secure your home for a storm and how to safely operate a generator to a call for people to donate blood at Cleveland Clinic Florida when the region was experiencing a severe blood shortage. Before and after Hurricane Irma’s impact, the Weston Emergency Operations Center was visited by scientists from the National Severe Storms Laboratory, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The National Severe Storms Laboratory serves the nation by working to improve lead time and accuracy of severe weather warnings and forecasts in order to save lives and reduce property damage. will happen.” Grateful to have power after the hurricane, Inga Ivan turned to the Facebook group “Weston and Beyond” to invite those without electricity in Weston to come to her home in Savanna, where she was serving coffee for adults and ice-cold popsicles for kids. For those who stopped by it was a respite from the heat and a chance to make new friends, especially for the children who enjoyed the unexpected playdate. With school cancelled following the hurricane, a group of teachers from Indian Trace Elementary School and Cypress Bay High School volunteered at Century Village in Pembroke Pines, passing out hot meals and water to the residents who had no power. Fifteen-year-old Janelle Naylon was moved by the hurricane devastation, particularly in the U.S. Virgin Islands. “Seeing people who lost their homes and all their belongings made me want to take action. The whole island was flattened and looters were stealing from the stores.” Janelle organized a donation drive, putting notices in neighbor’s mailboxes, to collect clothing, bedding and medicine to send to St. Thomas. Her collection was flown to the island by PriceSmart Miami. With gestures big and small, Weston residents proved this community comes together in the time of need.

he worst of times has a way of bringing out the best in people. That was certainly the case here in Weston before, during and after Hurricane Irma. While the number of “hurricane heroes” is enormous, and everyone has a story to share, several Weston residents truly embodied the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors. Thomas Dougherty went above and beyond, lending aid in Weston and all around South Florida. In the days before the storm, he helped install hurricane shutters on more than 35 homes of friends and neighbors. The former military medic was also called to duty, helping stabilize a broken leg until paramedics arrived after someone was injured making storm preparations. He also stitched up the hand of a friend who sustained a deep cut after the hurricane. In addition, Dougherty aided in the clean-up efforts and helped drive around his Savanna neighborhood taking pictures of the damage for the homeowner association. Dougherty, who hails from the Volunteer State (Tennessee), says he is a huge advocate for volunteering. “I have a heart to help people,” he shares. “I believe in the true power of positivity and good karma. Weston Art Guild’s Encore! Exhibit Featured Live Painting BY STACEY BOMSER

ypically, an art exhibit features completed pieces on display for patrons to admire. During the Weston Art Guild’s Art Is…Encore! exhibit, six artists demonstrated their artistic techniques during a live paint-in. This unique opportunity was presented during the Weston Art Guild’s second opening for its Art Is… exhibit at Gallery 1310 in the Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts. The unique venue is both an artist residence and gallery. The live painting sessions complemented the living-working environment. Six artists, representing different media, demonstrated their technique during the event. In addition to live painting, the artists explained their creative process to visitors while answering questions about their technique, background and future projects. On the first floor of the gallery, Nancy Lussier used pencil, charcoal and pastels to complete a portrait, capturing the look of a photograph from the 1940’s. Four artists were featured on the second floor. Patricia Beltran designed a figurative painting of a drummer using a palette knife with heavy weight acrylic on canvas. Lilfrancis Rojas used mixed media to create an abstract. Her collage technique featured crumbled paper on canvas and Lilfrancis Rojas demonstrates wood. Weston Art Guild President Lynda Sauls says visitors thoroughly enjoyed watching each artist, asking questions and viewing the beautiful work. “We are looking forward to holding live painting events in the future. We feel this is a great way to get local artists and the community in touch with each other.” The Weston Art Guild’s next exhibit will be here in Weston. The 9th Annual Juried Art Show takes place November 2nd through December 28th at the Weston Branch Library. The reception and awards presentation is scheduled for November 13th from 6-7:30 pm.
Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 10/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Originally formed in 1993 with the goal of establishing a library in Weston, the Weston Friends of the Library were instrumental in creating the Weston Reading Center and eventually the building of Broward County’s Weston Branch Library. For nearly 25 years, the Weston Friends of the Library have advocated for and helped support the Weston Branch Library. Like any good friend, this group of community volunteers provides physical, emotional and financial support to the library. It promotes awareness of the library and its services, serves as a liaison between the library and the Weston community, and raises funds to supplement programs not provided by the county. The Weston Friends of the Library sponsor programs and activities for all age groups. “Our most popular adult program is chair yoga,” states Co-President Ellen Korman. “The summer children’s program was a huge hit. We had puppet shows and storytellers and animal shows and a Venezuelan folk music concert.” Co-President Ruth Bettini adds, “Every Thursday, year-round, we have baby, toddler and preschool

story time that includes reading, singing, crafts and games. Once a month, we also offer baby, toddler and preschool yoga classes.” These programs are offered free of charge and are funded by the Weston Friends of the Library. Most of the money raised comes from the Friends’ Bookstore. Located in the library’s lobby area, the

bookstore sells gently used books and DVD’s that have been donated by members of the community. There are more than 1,000 books for all ages encompassing all genres from fiction and non-fiction to self-help books, travel guides and cookbooks. The majority sell for 50-cents or $1.00. “Four or five times a year, we also have a Book Fair,” notes Korman. “We fill the lobby with hundreds of books and DVD’s and sell them at a reduced price. You are guaranteed to find bargains galore. It’s a wonderful community event and our biggest fundraiser.” In addition to purchasing books and snacks from the Friends’ Bookstore, you can help support the Weston Friends of the Library and its efforts by becoming a member and/or volunteer. “Please remember that libraries are much more than just a place to borrow books. We have wonderful programs and activities for the entire community from babies to seniors,” shares Bettini. “We are a warm and friendly group and would love to have you join us.” For more information on joining the Weston Friends of the Library or becoming a volunteer, stop by the Friends’ Bookstore in the Weston Branch Library lobby, email WestonFriendsOfTheLibrary@gmail.com, or call 954-357-5420.

every child a place to belong.” The Spirit of Life Luncheon will begin with a vendor boutique starting at 10am, followed by a plated lunch featuring a candle lighting ceremony and inspiring video presentation. Miami-based attorney and legal commentator Mark Eiglarsh will be the guest speaker. There will also be a silent auction and raffle. One of the highlights of the event is the Godparent pinning ceremony. The JAFCO Godparent Circle, with more than 100 members from Weston alone, includes those who have pledged $1,800 per year for ten years to help raise an entire generation of children.

T
he Weston/West Broward Chapter of JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options) is gearing up for the Michelle Goldstein Spirit of Life Luncheon. This annual event, which is the chapter’s largest fundraiser, will take place on Wednesday, October 25th at Weston Hills Country Club. The Spirit of Life Luncheon is named in honor of Michelle Goldstein, a young woman whose life was tragically ended during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The event was created to celebrate her spirit and love for children. “This Spirit of Life Luncheon holds a special place in my heart,” shares JAFCO Executive Director Sarah Franco. “It honors a wonderful woman who was full of life and brought happiness to those around her. We celebrate her legacy here at JAFCO, where her family continues to provide support for our children.” This year’s luncheon chairs are Ruth Molina and Nancy Bauer. JAFCO Director of Development Operations Shelli Gold says, “they are both lovely women who are leading the committee to great success, already breaking the event’s previous sponsorship records.” Guests at this year’s luncheon will learn about what JAFCO does to serve abused and neglected children, as well as those with developmental disabilities, throughout Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. In addition, JAFCO recently expanded its clinical services by opening an office in Philadelphia to bring JAFCO’s successful model to the Northeast. “JAFCO’s mission is to care for abused and neglected children and those with disabilities in the Jewish community, and to work in partnership with families and the entire community,” explains Franco. “We believe that the care of children in our community is our responsibility, one we accept with joy, pride and love…giving

New Playground Opens at Tequesta Trace Park COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
P
arents and grandparents may get a bit nostalgic for their youth when they see some of the new playground equipment at Tequesta Trace Park. It features some classic playground equipment updated with modern aesthetics and safety features. “The new playground mixes new play elements found in modern playgrounds, such as the net climber, with old-school play elements with modern versions of both the merry-go-round and seesaw,” states Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation. The newly renovated playground also offers a traditional “playhouse” structure, designed specifically for children ages two to five. While the playground equipment was designed according to today’s strict standards for safety, Decker says parental supervision is still the best

safety feature around. He recommends families follow these safety precautions when using any of the Weston parks playgrounds: “First, adult supervision is highly recommended. Second, shoes should be worn at all times. And finally, though most of the equipment is under shade, there are times of the day when some of the equipment is not and it can get very hot. Parents should be cautious before letting children play on the equipment.” The South Florida heat is a concern at all Weston parks. That’s why the City recently installed a new water fountain/water bottle filler at Weston Regional Park to help keep athletes and parkgoers hydrated. It is located adjacent to the basketball courts, providing access to individuals using the basketball courts, roller hockey rinks, skate park, multipurpose courts, and volleyball courts, as well as cyclists who use Regional Park as a start/ end point for their rides. The City is monitoring usage of the new water fountain/water bottle filler at Regional Park, testing its durability. If proven effective and popular, Decker says they may start replacing older water fountains with this new dual system. The Parks and Recreation Department is always working to improve Weston parks and park facilities for the benefit of residents.
Two grass soccer fields at Regional Park are currently being converted into artificial turf playing fields. Renovation plans for Indian Trace Park are now in the design phase and will include new fields, playground, sports courts, parking and restroom facilities. Future plans include a new Community Center building at Regional Park and construction of a new park in the Bonaventure section of the City. For more information on Weston’s 14 parks and recreational facilities visit www.westonfl.org/ Departments/ParksAndRecreation/ ParksAndRecreationHome.aspx.

Phishing and Internet Scams
Adult & Children Classes Offered

S
cammers commonly use the internet to commit fraud through unsolicited emails. They can easily copy the logo or even the entire website of a legitimate organization in an attempt to lure you into providing personal information or downloading malicious software. A majority of internet scams are considered to be “phishing scams.” Phishing scams typically occur when scammers falsify their identity, usually by claiming to represent a legitimate corporation or government agency. They try to entice you into revealing personal information such as your bank account numbers, Social Security number, passwords or other sensitive data. If an email is requesting that you select a link to a website in order to “update” or “confirm” your account information, be skeptical and contact the organization directly to verify the legitimacy of the request. Selecting a link contained in an unsolicited email can install malware and spyware onto your computer, allowing scammers to gain access to files stored on your computer, as well as to personal information and account passwords. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, offers these tips: ▸▸ Don’t open the link. If you get an email or popup message that asks for personal or financial information, do not reply or open the link in the message. Legitimate companies don’t ask for this information via email. ▸▸ Don’t email personal or financial information. Email is not a secure method of transmitting personal information. If you initiate a transaction and want to provide your personal or financial information through an organization’s website, look for indicators that the site is secure, like a lock icon on the browser’s status bar or a web address that begins “https:” (the “s” stands for secure). Unfortunately, no indicator is foolproof; some phishers have forged security icons. ▸▸ Be aware. Review credit card and bank account statements as soon as you receive them to determine whether there are any unauthorized charges. If your statement is late by more than a couple of days, call your credit card company or bank to confirm your billing address and account balances. ▸▸ Be protected. Use anti-virus software and keep it up to date. Some phishing emails contain software that can harm your computer or track your activities on the internet without your knowledge. Anti-virus software and a firewall can protect you from inadvertently accepting such unwanted files. Anti-virus software scans incoming communications for troublesome files. If you have recently shared your credit card or bank account information in response to an unsolicited email, you should notify your credit card company or bank immediately and discuss whether you should cancel your accounts. Carefully monitor your accounts. If you provided your Social Security number, you should contact one of the three national consumer reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian or TransUnion) to ask that a fraud alert be placed on your accounts and obtain copies of your credit reports. You should also visit the FTC’s identity theft website to file a complaint.

re you contemplating a move from your current home due to changes in family size, upsizing, downsizing, or relocating? Of course, you know that it is no secret that an experienced real estate agent is your smart first step. But today, with the ever-changing dynamic real estate market, it is more important than ever to put all the best tools to work for you when selling probably one of your biggest assets. CBx is the new game changer and only Coldwell Banker agents have it. Coldwell Banker has its own genius bar staffed by its top tech minds. They have created a new app which helps agents visualize buyer and market information like never before. Here’s why you need CBx working for you: It helps the Coldwell Banker agent to strategically and accurately price the home. I know what you’re thinking: why care about CBx when you already know what your house is worth with Zillow’s Zestimate. According to Spencer Rascoff, Zillow’s CEO, “the Zestimate is only a good starting point and actually has a median error rate of about 8%. So, for instance, on a $500,000 house that would be roughly $40,000. And that is just the national median rate, the localized median error in some cases far exceeds that.” It tells the agent who the ideal buyer is based on their demographic make-up. CBx plays an essential role in helping an agent determine who they will be marketing to. Is your ideal buyer most likely a family of four, making about $75K a year and who like a commute time to work to be about 20 minutes? If it is, CBx will tell them with that level of detail! This will help the agent market your home both online and off.

CBx tells agents the top three markets where the buyer is likely to come from. When marketing a home, the location is crucial. Will your buyer come from within the town it is being sold in or three states away? CBx leverages big data to inform your agent the top three areas that the buyer will most likely come from. Coldwell Banker agents are trained to take this information and combine it with social advertising to market your home in one of the most unique and effective ways in the industry, which has earned us some majoring bragging rights. We know that every seller wants two things: to sell their home quickly and for the best price. With the exclusive CBx app, Coldwell Banker has put that power in the hands of its real estate professionals. CBx helps agents and sellers work together to quantify features of a home to estimate the best market price and identify the right buyers for that home. CBx utilizes Coldwell Banker big data, but where does that data come from? Coldwell Banker, often referred to as the Seller’s Brand, has been in business since 1906. It is on the cutting edge of technology, utilizing its broad internet and social media presence. It is imperative in today’s fast moving real estate market that the agent and company understand the power of social media. It promotes your home to more people which can be specifically targeted to qualified buyers, while at the same time increasing the shareability of your property, basically for pennies. Coldwell Banker is currently the only real estate brand bringing CBx to its sellers. Rose Sklar of the Rose & Dean Sklar Real Estate Group is consistently recognized as a Top Weston Sales Associate, earning membership in the prestigious Coldwell Banker Legends Society and achieving the coveted Society of Excellence designation. OCTOBER 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON
BY DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF BRUCE ANGIER
F
or more than 80 consecutive years, the President of the United States has signed a proclamation for Fire Prevention Week, signaling fire departments across the nation to teach fire safety in their communities. This year’s Fire Prevention Week is October 8th to 14th, but you can expect to see our firefighters and public educators promoting fire safety all month long. This year’s theme is “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”; it’s an effort to reinforce why everyone needs to have an escape plan. Fire Prevention Week was first established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 people homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 buildings, and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire started on October 8th, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. It was clear after the fire that more had to be done to educate the public about fire safety. Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9th falls. Fires in this country remain a significant problem to this day. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, both the number of fires and fire deaths rose during the year 2014. There were 1,298,000 fires, resulting in 3,275 deaths in 2014. Fires caused almost 16,000 injuries and $11.6 billion in losses in just that one year. While the number of fires had been trending downward since 2005, the number of fire deaths is trending upward. This upward trend is alarming. It re-enforces the importance of Fire Prevention Week and for ensuring your home is safe from accidental fires. By following some basic fire safety precautions, you can help reduce your home’s risk of fire. ▸▸ Have an escape plan and practice it with your family. Plan for at least two ways to escape every room in the house, if practical. Make sure windows and doors to your home are unblocked. Teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. ▸▸ Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. ▸▸ Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building. ▸▸ Ensure your home’s smoke detectors are working properly. Test them monthly and change the batteries at least annually. If your smoke detectors are more than ten years old, replace them. ▸▸ Handle gasoline and propane around the house with care. Keep both out of children’s sight and reach. Only store gasoline in approved metal or plastic containers and store both gasoline and propane outside of the home (i.e. in a garage or lawn shed). Never use gasoline inside the home as a cleaning agent. Your family’s ability to survive a house fire largely depends on advanced warning from smoke alarms and advanced escape preparation. Weston’s Fire Safety Educator is planning fire prevention activities and presentations in all of Weston’s elementary schools during October for Fire Prevention Week. Activities include a fire safety “treasure hunt” and fire truck visits. By reviewing and re-enforcing the fire safety information received in the schools with your children at home, your entire family can be better prepared for a fire emergency. For more information, please contact Fire Chief Bruce Angier at Fire Station 81 at 954-389-2015 or by email at Bruce_Angier@sheriff.org.

ongratulations to Weston Mayor Daniel J. Stermer on being named Mayor of the Year by the Broward County Council of Professional Fire Fighters (BCCPFF). The organization represents the 2,800 fire fighters and paramedics serving Broward County. “Each year, the Council honors elected officials who espouse those best practices in improving their local Fire Rescue department,” stated Walter Dix, President of International Association of Firefighters Local 4321 and BCCPFF Vice Chair. “Mayor Stermer is credited with building a strong working relation-

ship between BSO Fire Rescue and the City of Weston.” Mayor Stermer was acknowledged for his commitment to improving public safety. “Thanks to his dedication, the City of Weston is now a Class 1 ISO CFAI accredited Fire Rescue agency,” stated Dix. “Only the top one percent of all fire rescue departments in the United States have received this top rating.” When Weston received the ISO (Insurance Services Office, Inc.) Public Protection Classification 1 rating in 2015, it was one of only 97 cities/departments in the country to attain this rating. The City scored 98.7 out of a possible 105.5 points. The stringent criteria were met due to a variety of factors including Weston’s contractual relationship with BSO Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, the City’s investment in equipment, and the City’s infrastructure including the water supply and distribution system. Weston remains committed to supporting its Fire Rescue department. The 2018 budget calls for construction of a fourth fire station to serve the city. Dix concluded the award presentation by saying, “As Broward County Council of Professional Fire Fighters’ 2017 Mayor of the Year, we congratulate Mayor Stermer on his strong stance to improving the

BSO Fire Rescue Shares Halloween Safety Tips BY STACEY BOMSER
I
n just a few short weeks, the streets will be filled with princesses and pirates, ghosts and goblins, and superheroes and sports stars. While Halloween can be a fun night for families, it can also be dangerous. Although the fear of poisoned or tampered treats still persists among parents, research shows very few cases occur each year. The real danger is pedestrian injuries and other accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than twice as many children are killed in pedestrian/vehicle accidents on Halloween between 4pm and 10pm as compared to the same hours on other days throughout the year. Weston District Fire Chief Bruce Angier offers the following tips to ensure a safe and happy Halloween:
Walk Safely
▸▸ Cross the street only at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks when available. ▸▸ Look left, right and left again when crossing the street and keep looking as you cross. ▸▸ Walk, don’t run, across the street. ▸▸ Always use the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, then walk facing traffic and as far to the left as possible. ▸▸ Teach children to always make eye contact with the driver before crossing in front of a car. ▸▸ Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars. ▸▸ When walking or crossing the street, put electronic devices down and keep your head up.
38
Drive Safely
▸▸ Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. ▸▸ Take extra time to look for children at intersections, in medians and on curbs. ▸▸ Enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully. ▸▸ Eliminate any distractions inside your car that may reduce your concentration on the roads and your surroundings. ▸▸ Anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day. Popular trick-ortreating hours are 5:30-9:30pm, so be especially alert during those hours.
Trick-or-Treat Safely
▸▸ Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. ▸▸ If children are mature enough to be without adult supervision, they should trick-or-treat in groups. ▸▸ Only visit well-lit houses. Never enter a stranger’s house. ▸▸ Never accept rides from strangers. ▸▸ Never walk near lit candles or luminaries.
Costume Safety
▸▸ Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers to increase visibility to drivers. ▸▸ Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s field of vision.
OCTOBER 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON
▸▸ Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls. ▸▸ Carry glow sticks or flashlights to help drivers see trick-or-treaters. “By using these safety tips, and some common sense, you will keep Halloween a fun, safe and happy holiday for you and your family,” states Chief Angier.

BSO’s Just Drive Program Warns Teens About Dangers of Distracted Driving BY STACEY BOMSER
I
n conjunction with National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 15th-21st, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is driving home a message about the dangers of distracted driving. BSO Life Safety Educator Melanie Brocato is conducting Just Drive programs at many area high schools. Just Drive was launched four years ago at Cypress Bay High School. Since then, it has reached nearly 35,000 Broward County high school students. Brocato says the program specifically targets teen drivers because traffic crashes are the #1 killer of teens in this country. “Teens are most at risk because they are the most inexperienced drivers and they are among the age group with the highest use of technology.” Brocato created Just Drive due to the rising concern of distracted drivers. “Distracted driving is anything that takes your mind off the primary task of driving,” she explains. “Distractions may be visual (taking your eyes off the road), manual (taking your eyes off the wheel), or cognitive (taking your mind off driving). Texting is considered to be one of the most dangerous distractions because it involves all three types of distraction.” Just Drive is aptly named because Brocato says the program’s message is quite simple – just drive. “The program promotes the importance of simply focus-

ing on the task of driving to reduce risk of traffic crashes and ultimately reduce injury and/or death. Research shows that the impairment of distracted drivers is similar to a person driving with a .08 blood alcohol level.” In addition to teaching teens about the dangers of texting and driving and other forms of distraction, it also highlights the importance of seat belt usage, Florida’s Graduated Driver License laws, and DUI prevention. Speakers from the Meagan Napier Foundation will participate in the upcoming Just Drive programs. The Megan Napier Foundation promotes DUI prevention and emphasizes the importance of teen driver safety. “Teens will be exposed to a story of tragedy, forgiveness, and redemption,” shares Brocato. “The presentation highlights the loss of two 20-year-old girls by a drunk driver. The drunk driver, who was charged and convicted of DUI manslaughter, will be there to share his side of the story and the impact it has had on his life and future. This is a unique opportunity to share part of the story teens don’t often hear.” The vehicle from that accident will be brought to each school for the students to see. Brocato says this helps students understand that safe driving is a matter of life and death. Following each presentation, students will sign the Just Drive pledge, committing to do their part to end distracted driving. The Just Drive program is available to the community. ona Blu just celebrated its second anniversary with a “Cena Sarda”, a seven-course Sardinian dinner with perfectly paired wines. While the party may be over, the Sardinianstyle Italian restaurant remains the toast of the town, continually racking up awards and accolades. Although still in its infancy when you consider the region it’s from is known for longevity, Zona Blu has garnered quite a reputation in two short years. “It was a huge honor to be named one of the top five new restaurants in Broward and Palm Beach counties by City & Shore magazine last year,” states Deborah Marras Bautista, who co-owns Zona Blu with her sister, Sheila Marras David, and Executive Chef Andrea Fadda. “In addition, we are a two-time Our City Weston Best of Weston winner, named Best Italian Restaurant in Weston for 2017. We also recently earned the coveted Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for 2017.” Bautista says what’s most rewarding is the praise they get from patrons. Zona Blu has developed a culinary cult following since it opened, with diners coming from all over to sample the Sardinian-style specialties. “Chef Fadda takes great pride in creating dishes that are not typically known outside of Sardinia, such as Fregola, a broth-based, saffroninfused soup with Sardinian couscous and mixed seafood,” explains Bautista. “Our best-selling dish is Spaghetti al Cartoccio. St. Paul Lutheran Church Members Participate in Luther500 Festival BY STACEY BOMSER
Luther and other reformers, it provides a learning opportunity that you can’t experience any other way.” That message certainly resonated with Kris Pascoe. “Traveling to the places where Martin Luther lived, studied and preached brought the Reformation to life for me. The tactile experience of walking the same cobblestones, sitting in the same pews, touching some of the same walls and hearing the same word of God was powerful.” Steve Jones says he considered the trip to be a pilgrimage. “It was an opportunity to be right where it all began in terms of both my Lutheran Christianity but also the beginning of Protestant Christianity. Not only did I learn more about Martin Luther and the Reformation than I ever thought I would, but also about postwar Germany and the fact that it is really a new country in many ways.” Jim and Sheila Mueller said the Luther500 was an amazing gathering. One of their favorite memories was the evening service at the Castle Church. “The music was so moving and took us back in time.” Traveling to Germany to participate in the Luther500 Festival was just one of many trips organized by St. Paul Lutheran Church. Becker says the congregation has been part of an ongoing ministry in Haiti for several years. “Members travel to Haiti once or even twice a year to provide training, teaching, resources and encouragement for orphans, pastors and missionaries.”

The trip explored the origins of the Lutheran denomination which date back to October 31st, 1517, when a monk named Martin Luther sought to reform and unify the Catholic church. “St. Paul wanted to provide an opportunity for our members to explore the Lutheran Christian heritage in the very places where the Lutheran church began, Wittenberg, Germany,” explains Jeremy Becker, Director of Youth and Family Ministry. “A group of 49 from St. Paul joined over 500 other Lutherans from around the United States at the Luther500 Festival.” Becker says the program provided learning experiences, worship opportunities, and service components, as well as day trips to historic Lutheran sites. They visited Wartburg Castle, where Luther translated the New Testament to German, the Augustinian Monastery where Luther studied in Erfurt, his wife’s home in Torgau, and Leipzig, where the Reformation debates took place. The group flew into Berlin, where they learned about Germany’s more modern history, such as the Holocaust and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. “Our goal was to provide an opportunity for people to learn more about the history of the Reformation and the Lutheran Church,” states Becker. “When you walk in the footsteps of Martin

Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Orthopedics Program is Highest Ranked in Florida BY STACEY BOMSER
O
nce again, U.S. News & World Report has recognized Cleveland Clinic Florida as one of the best hospitals in the region and highest in Broward County, with its orthopedics program claiming the top spot in the state. This is the eighth consecutive year the magazine has highly ranked the Weston hospital in its annual Best Hospitals issue. For 2017-2018, Cleveland Clinic Florida ranked second among hospitals in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area and eighth in Florida. “It is an honor to be acknowledged for the highquality specialty care we provide our patients and to be consistently named of the best hospitals in Florida for the past eight years,” said Wael Barsoum, MD, President of Cleveland Clinic Florida. “Our caregivers continue to focus on achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients and, as a result, an increasing number of our programs have been nationally ranked and recognized as high performing.” For the first time, the hospital’s orthopedics program is ranked nationally. It ranked #31 of the top 50 programs, making it the highest ranked orthopedics program in Florida. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s gastroenterology and GI surgery program once again achieved national ranking, moving up to #42.
In addition, Cleveland Clinic Florida’s cancer and geriatrics programs were rated as high performing. Two procedures, hip replacement and colon cancer surgery, and two chronic conditions, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, were also rated as high performing. U.S. News & World Report publishes its Best Hospitals list to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health factors or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determine the rankings in most specialties. Cleveland Clinic Florida is a nonprofit, multi-specialty, academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. It has 255 physicians with expertise in 55 specialties. The Weston medical campus is fully integrated and includes diagnostic centers, outpatient surgery, and a 24-hour emergency department. Kids Helping Kids Teaches Children a Valuable Lesson COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER

or many Weston students, the first lesson of the school year was one of compassion. Thanks to their efforts, and the generosity of the community, Kids Helping Kids was able to provide much-needed school supplies for disadvantaged students at Royal Palm STEM Museum Magnet School in Lauderhill. Now in its eleventh year, Kids Helping Kids was founded by Lisa Lerner as a means of teaching her own children the importance of helping others who are less fortunate. Each year, the family organizes a school supply drive, collecting backpacks, notebooks, binders, crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks, highlighters and everything a student would need to have a successful school year. Girl Scout Troop 10646 has been a longtime supporter of this program, as has Temple Beth Emet in Cooper City, which adopted Kids Helping Kids as one of its Mitzvah Day projects. Alaya Spa at the Bonaventure Resort also supported the cause. But Lerner says the bulk of the donations come from the Weston community – friends and neighbors who look forward to this service project each year. “For many families, like mine, this has become an annual tradition. I had many friends who stopped by unsolicited to drop off donations because they know I always collect.”
OCTOBER 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON
With her son now a senior at Cypress Bay High School, Lerner says she’s been reflecting on how this program has taken on a life of its own over the years. “With Aaron graduating, he will not be part of this tradition of collecting and donating school supplies next year. It’s made me reflect on the first time we did this, when he was in first grade. I know this experience has instilled a value of ‘doing good for others’ and volunteerism in him, along with compassion and the willingness to help.” She says what’s even more rewarding is seeing how Kids Helping Kids is no longer just a family tradition, but a community-wide tradition to give back. This year, Lerner was joined by friends and family, as well as members of Girl Scout Troop 10646, in delivering the school supply donations to the school. She says it is always a rewarding experience as Principal Ducarmel Augustin and Assistant Principal Priscille Elie, along with many teachers, personally thank the kids for their generous donations and let them know how their efforts are appreciated by the students at Royal Palm STEM Museum Magnet School. “Thanks to the support of the Weston community, Kids Helping Kids has grown so much over the past eleven years and touched so many children’s lives – both on the giving and receiving end,” shares Lerner. “I feel confident this project has taught many children how to give back and I hope this lesson sticks with them throughout their lifetime.”
The Harvest Drive Yields Year-Round Aid to Families in Need COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
H
arvest Drive was born 25 years ago this month, when a few moms from Country Isles Elementary organized a holiday canned food drive at the school. Over the years it has exploded into a year-round endeavor, serving students and families in need throughout Broward County. One of the many ways Harvest Drive helps students is through its backpack program. This year, about 350 students in the area received backpacks stuffed with school supplies. In addition to Harvest Drive’s collection, Arise Virtual Solutions in Miramar stepped up once again, providing 144 backpacks for students at three elementary schools. Harvest Drive Founder Renee Herman says she is continually impressed and amazed by the generosity of corporate sponsors such as Arise Virtual Solutions and the Florida Panthers. Not only does the hockey team support the cause by hosting Harvest Drive Days collecting food items during hockey games and having players volunteer at distribution sites, the team is now part of the Harvest Helping Hands Box Program. At the beginning of the school year, the Panthers helped pack 144 boxes of non-perishable food items, weighing more than 40 pounds each, which were delivered to 12 Broward schools to be distributed by social workers to families in need. Last year, Harvest Drive provided 600 boxes and Herman expects to exceed 1000 this school year. She says the demand for food is greater than ever. “According to FeedingAmerica.org, one in eight
Americans is food insecure. It’s even more dire here in Florida, where one in seven people are food insecure and one in four children struggle with hunger. Harvest Drive is working hard to ensure no child goes to bed hungry.” Most of that work is through grass roots efforts run by students and fueled by donations from local families. Herman is asking her Weston neighbors to support Harvest Drive efforts by donating non-perishable food, especially protein items such as peanut butter, tuna, soups and canned pastas. “We were fortunate to escape the brunt of Hurricane Irma’s impact, so consider sharing our blessing by donating your unused hurricane supplies,” suggests Herman. “One can of soup can help make a meal for a family in need.” She says donations are also needed for the Harvest Boutique, especially boys clothing and gently used toys, games and children’s books. Food and merchandise donations can be delivered to Western High School on Harvest Drive Community Drop-off Day, which is on Friday, November 17th, from 3-10pm. Volunteers will be on hand to help unload your car. To help raise funds to purchase perishable items for Thanksgiving, Harvest Drive is hosting its annual Poker Night at Carolina Ale House on Wednesday, October 25th. For more information on Harvest Drive visit www.HarvestDriveFlorida.com.

Trash Talk – Weston Residents Support Recycling Efforts COMMUNITY NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
W
eston residents should be commended for their recycling efforts. Environmentally-conscious homeowners take advantage of the weekly curbside recycling collection, as well as the annual Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling events held here in Weston. The City of Weston contracts Republic Services to provide residential garbage and recycling services. Automated curbside collection is provided for all singlefamily homes. Trash and recycling materials should be placed in the official carts for pick-up. The carts must be spaced at least three feet apart and three feet from any obstruction, such as a mailbox, tree, fire hydrant, or parked car. Garbage is collected twice a week, while recycling is only once per week. In Weston, all recycling can go into the same cart; no sorting or separating necessary. Accepted recycling items include newspapers, catalogs, magazines, junk mail, office paper, soda cartons, crushed boxes, flattened cardboard from non-food items such as shipping boxes, aluminum and steel food and beverage containers, plastic containers, glass containers, milk and juice cartons, even drink boxes. The following items should not be recycled: plastic bags, pizza boxes, Styrofoam or plastic take-out containers, glass products such as mirrors and light bulbs, pots, pans and metal utensils, plastics and toys, hazardous waste, electronics, medical waste and pharmaceuticals, and more. The city offers alternative disposal methods for some of these items. The City of Weston and Broward County host annual Household Hazardous
Waste Collection and Electronics Recycling Events at the Public Works Services Center. Residents can safely dispose of hazardous items such as pesticides, paints, motor oil, pool chemicals, insecticides, batteries, computers, printers, televisions, and more. At total of 141,618 pounds of Household Hazardous Waste and 82,895 pounds of electronics were collected during the April event. The dates of the 2018 events have not yet been scheduled, but Weston residents can visit the Broward County drop-off sites which are open on Saturdays year-round. The Broward Sheriff’s Office will host its Shred-a-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet at the Weston Police Services Building from 10am to 1pm on November 18th. It’s an opportunity to reduce the risk of identity theft by safely disposing of personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain sensitive data. This service is free of charge. There is a fivebox maximum for shredding documents. At the same time, Operation Medicine Cabinet collects unused, unwanted or expired medications for safe disposal. The final bulk trash pick-up of 2017 will take place later this month. Weston residents receive four free bulk trash collections annually. It’s an opportunity to dispose of oversized items such as furniture, mattresses, appliances and air conditioners (Freon must be removed by a certified dealer), mirrors, glass, and most other items too large to dispose of during curbside collection. Contractorgenerated waste as well as vegetative waste will not be collected. Bulk trash pick-up takes place October 18-21st on your regularly scheduled garbage day and bulk items should be place curbside in the same location, but not obstructing access to garbage carts. The 2018 dates are January 17-20th, April 18-21st, July 18-21st and October 17-20th. For more information on trash and recycling programs in Weston check out Garbage Services on the Department of Public Works site at www.westonfl. org/Departments/PublicWorks/PublicWorksHome. aspx.

17 Cypress Bay Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists
SECTION NEWS SCHOOL HEAD
BY STACEY BOMSER
S
eventeen Cypress Bay High School seniors have been named Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to William Braga, Andrew Braxton, Ryan Bush, Isabella Chiurillo, Sydnie Cohen, Hannah Kang, Andrew Kennedy, Lance Kotler, Tyler Kotler, Joseph Li, Richard Liu, Dylan Lyon, Christian Pichardo, Hannah Rothbard, Caleb Wong, Zachary Wurtenberger, and Zonshen Yu. These 17 students were among only 53 Broward County Public Schools students to receive this recognition. “This is an incredible honor for Cypress Bay High School and we are so proud of these students for being recognized for their outstanding scores and academic achievements,” said Marlene Sanders, Guidance Director at Cypress Bay High School. Only 16,000 students nationwide were selected for this honor. The National Merit Semifinalists now continue in the competition to be named National Merit Finalists and ultimately National Merit Scholars. They are competing for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation was established in 1955 with the goal of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence. Over the years, more than 330,000 outstanding students have won National Merit Scholarships worth over $1 billion. Students qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program based on their results from the Preliminary SAT/
National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which is taken during the junior year. About 1.6 million students took that test last year. The National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are the top-scoring students in each state and represent less than onepercent of the U.S. high school seniors. In order to become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Semifinalists must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes an essay and information about the student’s participation and leadership in school and community activities, as well as honors and awards received. The 17 Cypress Bay Semifinalists will find out in February whether they advance to the Finalist level. Merit Scholarship designees are selected based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring. In 2017, 12 Weston students received collegesponsored National Merit Scholarships. To learn more about the National Merit Scholarship Program visit www.nationalmerit.org.

Manatee Bay Elementary Encourages Individuality
SCHOOL NEWS
BY STACEY BOMSER
F
ree to Be You and Me at MBE is the theme this year at Manatee Bay Elementary School. All year long, the school will celebrate uniqueness and individuality. It’s a nod to the popular 1970’s children’s book and record album, Free to Be You and Me, by actress Marlo Thomas that promoted individuality, tolerance, and gender equality. To complement the theme, this year’s school shirts are rainbow tie-dye. Fifth grade team leader Kathleen White-Ortiz says each year teachers and staff make suggestions and then vote for the school theme. “The winner gets announced at the end-of-year luncheon and staff then have the summer to brainstorm how to incorporate the theme in classrooms and in the school as a whole.” During pre-planning week, teachers got into the spirit of the school theme, expressing their uniqueness and individuality while presenting their teams. White-
Ortiz says some teams had matching t-shirts, while others made video presentations or performed karaoke renditions of popular 70’s songs. She says, “The theme of celebrating individuality and focusing on working together peacefully and productively was displayed through the staff as they prepared for another great year with students at Manatee Bay.” That message was carried into the classrooms during the first few weeks of school. White-Ortiz says teachers planned special activities to get to know their students. “Celebrating similarities as well as diversity and building relationships through team-building activities have emphasized the peace, love and respect expected at Manatee Bay throughout the year.” Principal Heather Hedman-Devaughn is asking parents to help reinforce the school theme at home. “Our message to parents is to listen, listen, listen to your child and find out all you can about the unique and wonderful person they are. Our goal is to work together with parents, staff and students to help our amazing students be the best ‘you’ they can be.” She added, “The Manatee Bay community is looking forward to a great year where all are Free to Be You and Me at MBE.”

Am I Too Old for Orthodontics? BY DR. ALON GROSMAN
I
t is true that for many years braces have been as strongly associated with adolescents as acne. However, this has been changing dramatically in recent time. In 2010, the American Association of Orthodontics reported that the percentage of adults being treated with orthodontics has increased to 22 % nationally. This is a 50% increase from a similar study done in the mid 1990’s. One factor which seems to be responsible for this upswing in adult orthodontic treatment is an increase in cosmetic options. The size of braces, even the metal braces, has decreased significantly. Tooth colored braces have been around for a long time, but have had the poor reputation of staining. With advancements in materials, this is no longer a concern. Clear aligners, used increasingly in recent years, have brought another option for adults hoping to hide their treatment. Another factor which seems to have affected the rate of adult orthodontics is self perception. When I turned 25 years old, I remember hearing for the first time that “30 was the new 20.” It was very inspiring to know as I approached 30, I was actually getting younger. Ten years later, I was lucky enough to discover that “40 is the new 30.” This general optimism in aging has brought with it a new industry of “wellness.” Magazines have been created dedicated to health at various stages of life. Doctors espousing the “truth” about longevity have taken over prime time television. Plastic surgeons have plastered local advertising with new technologies in turning back the effects of time. In the dental industry, we have seen whitening material become an over the counter item. In my field of orthodontics, Align Technology, the parent company of “Invisalign,” has poured millions of Wall Street dollars into marketing campaigns targeting adult patients.
ASK THE EXPERT
P
arents who care enough to investigate and visit preschools before choosing one for their child certainly believe in the value of an education. Once you as a parent commit to a preschool your obligation is only beginning. In addition to tuition, you must establish a pleasant routine for your child just to get her dressed and bathed and arrive at school on time every day. There are forms that you must complete, parent handbooks to review, meetings with teachers, play dates to schedule, fund raisers, etc. Preschool is a commitment! Many caring and concerned parents monitor their child’s progress in school daily by asking, “What did you do today?” or “What did you learn?”. How would you feel if after three weeks of school the answer was the same every day: “We played”? So now that you are fully committed to the value of a preschool education so that your brilliant child can learn and excel, you find out that “all my child does is play every day”? How is she going to get into the University of Florida, Florida State or Columbia by playing every day? Children love to play, and children love to learn. Which is more important in school, play or learning? The answer is not what you might think; they are both important. Play and learning are not mutually exclusive, in fact children learn through play. Imagine this example of directed play, that is play that is assisted by a teacher. Earlier this week the teacher reads the students a story about a farm. Today is farm day, the teacher announces, and brings out figures of horses, cows, chickens and sheep. There is a barn and a coop. These items were chosen by the teacher to reinforce concepts learned in the story. The teacher asks the children to pick an animal and name the animal. “This is a cow”, says Jenny. “Where do cows sleep?” asks the teacher. “Cows sleep in the barn”, says Miguel, who also chose a cow, and moves his cow into the barn. “What other animals sleep in the barn?” the teacher asks, “Horses sleep in the barn”, Barry answers and moves his horse into the barn. “Why do cows and horses sleep in the barn?” asks the teacher. “Because they are friends”, says Alyssa. Preschoolers frequently play independently. They may be in the farm center with other children, but they may not play cooperatively. They are however observing how their peers play and may incorporate that into their own play, which may be a stepping stone to playing together. It is well established by years of research that play benefits children’s learning and development. Play helps develop language and social and emotional skills. Play has been linked to important brain function. Executive functions like self-control, the ability to stay on task, or mental flexibility are learned through play, according to researchers. Play is fun, but make no mistake about it: play is the business of learning.
POSITIVE PARENTING
Play…the Business of Learning
Should age be a factor in the decision to start orthodontic treatment? Absolutely not. In my opinion, there are both advantages, as well as challenges, with treatment of every age group. Treatment of the teen age population has the benefit of growth. We are able to accomplish some goals which would not be possible with adults without the use of jaw surgery. However, hygiene and motivation can become compromised very quickly. Adults, on the other hand, are usually very motivated as they have truly considered the sacrifice of time and finances before starting treatment. Still, treatment time for some adults tends to be longer. Reasons for an increased length of treatment time range from the need to open or close spaces for missing teeth, higher or lower density of bone, or a decreased level of bone support due to a history of gum disease. The most important part of any treatment, regardless of age, is the proper diagnosis of all related conditions of the mouth. This may require input from the dentist, periodontist (gum specialist), or another dental specialist. Once this is accomplished, the orthodontist can create a realistic treatment plan using the orthodontic appliance, whether it be braces or clear aligners, which can accomplish these goals. In short, I like to prescribe to my own philosophy that one is only as old as one feels. If you desire improving your smile and having teeth that fit together comfortably, then you should certainly consider orthodontic treatment. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
Green Tea Found to be Beneficial in Preventing Memory Loss and Obesity BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
F
or many years, scientist and tea enthusiast alike have raved about the health benefits of drinking green tea. If you were never a fan of this ancient tradition, a new study may give you just the push you need to take that first sip. Researchers from Northwest A&F University in China have concluded EGCG, a compound found in green tea, is beneficial in protecting against memory loss and combatting the harmful effects of insulin resistance. This research is promising in the sense that it could offer an alternative to those who suffer from Type 2 diabetes, which is caused by several factors—one of them being insulin resistance. The study, published in the FASEB Journal, was conducted on three groups of mice. The first group was a control group consuming a standard diet. The second group consumed a diet that was high in fats and sugars while the third group consumed the high fat/high sugar diet along with some EGCG added to their water. The mice in the second group ended up having a higher body weight than those in the control and EGCG groups. In addition, researchers found the mice in the EGCG group performed better in tests of memory than the mice in the other two groups. The fact that the high sugar/high fat diet is similar to the Western diet led these scientists to conclude EGCG could be an option in combating memory impairment caused by such diets. It is important to note that the study does not give the green light for consumption of unhealthy foods by counteracting their negative effects just by drinking green tea; it actually highlights the importance of nutrition and lifestyle as they affect the outcomes that are taking place in your body. Furthermore, the findings highlight the importance of proper and effective supplementation when nutrition alone is not enough. As a functional medicine doctor, my approach focuses on preventing disease through the optimization of healthy living, which of course would not be possible without adequate nutrition. Know that even if you eat healthy, your body may not be absorbing all the nutrients it needs due to a wide range of factors, including barriers in the gastrointestinal tract that prevent adequate absorption. In today’s hectic world, nutritional deficiencies are not uncommon. At Bellissimo Medical, we can conduct specialized testing to know exactly what deficiencies a patient may have (including those that may affect weight and memory) and we can address these and guide our patients on the type and dosing of medical-grade herbal supplementation that may be needed. In addition, when addressing the bodies vitamins and mineral deficiencies we can maximize your body’s healing potential to help you recover from daily stressors, repair damage and prevent aging. Increased energy, a feeling of overall well-being and increased sports performance are just a few of the many health benefits. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954384-8989. the final round. “After three more days of intense workouts and intersquad games, I was one of 18 players chosen to make up the U-12 USA National Team,” explains Spencer. The team traveled to Taiwan over the summer for the Baseball World Cup. Spencer says the team played nine games, which consisted of five pool play games, three super round games, and the Championship/Gold Medal game against Chinese Taipei. Team USA beat Chinese Taipei 7-2 to remain defending champions. “My favorite memory of being in Taiwan playing in the World Cup had to be after the Championship game, I stood on the pedestal, alongside my teammates, the gold medal around my neck, listening to the National Anthem on foreign soil,” shares Spencer. “It was the most incredible feeling knowing I was now a World Champion along the best players in the USA.” Spencer adds it was also incredible to be able to meet the best U-12 players from around the world. The countries that participated were Australia, Nicaragua, Panama, Germany, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Czech Republic, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and the United States. Although the WBSC World Cup may be over, Spencer says the memories he made will last a lifetime. “My gold medal hangs in my room and I look at it every day. It brings me back to the championship game where we played in a sold-out stadium, Tainan Municipal Stadium, of 11,000 people.” In addition to playing baseball, Spencer says he also enjoys mixed martial arts.

t’s every golfer’s dream to play in the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club and Aadi Bhatnagar is no exception. The Imagine Charter School at Weston second grader may be well on his way. At seven years old, he is already playing on the PGA Junior tour against players double his age. Aadi says his interest in golf began when he was three after watching a PGA
tournament with his parents. “A few months later we received a copy of Golf Digest and I held onto it because I wanted to be on the cover of the magazine one day,” he shares. “My mom saw my interest and enrolled me in the school golf program while I was still in pre-K.” The coach recognized Aadi’s talent and love for the game and asked if he would like to be on the Junior PGA team. So far, Aadi has played in nine tournaments. “Because of my consistent straight driving I am called Mr. Consistency,”

he states proudly. “I am called the Wizard of Wonder for chipping my ball out of the sand trap.” That’s not surprising when you consider Aadi’s dedication to the game. “Golf is a game of focus and discipline, so I have to make sure I sleep early and get prepared for my game. You have to practice a lot and warm up before your game by hitting the driving range,” he explains, noting that he practices every day. Aadi is always trying to become a better player. “Even if I am versing another team, I make sure I watch and learn from the other players.” Although the young golfer has won many medals, he has also faced some huge challenges. “I had an accident which injured my right arm and shoulder and kept me away from golf for almost ten months. Coming back to the game after multiple surgeries has been my greatest accomplishment.” Like many golfers, Aadi considers golf the ‘greatest game ever played.’ He says he loves playing because it’s a fun sport and because he gets to spend time with his family. “I love my mom to line me up and coach me on the course and my daddy to be my caddy.”

The Women’s Center at Broward Health Weston Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness Month
72
BY STACEY BOMSER
B
reast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women in this country. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the breast cancer fatality rate has declined in recent years, in part due to early detection from a mammogram. A mammogram is a quick, safe and painless x-ray that can detect breast lumps up to five years before they can be felt during a selfbreast exam. The ACS recommends all women over the age of 40 receive an annual mammogram. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Women’s Center at Broward Health Weston is encouraging women to get their annual mammograms during the month of October. Last year the Women’s Center at Broward Health Weston provided nearly 1,000 mammograms. It hopes to provide even more this year in an effort to encourage early detection. “Early detection of breast cancer can mean the difference between positive and negative patient outcomes,” states Sharel Morelock, manager of Broward Health Weston’s Women’s Center. “That’s why we use this month to remind women to get their mammograms. So, the more women we can get to have their annual mammograms, the more lives will be saved. And that, ultimately, is the goal of Broward Health Weston.” The Women’s Center will offer evening and Saturday appointments to help accommodate as many patients as possible. Patients should bring a prescription from their doctor for a mammogram. All appointments include a mammography screening and diagnostic analysis by a board-certified radiologist. Most insurances are accepted. In addition to encouraging women to get their mammograms during the month of October, Broward Health Weston is hosting a flamingo flock for the community as an opportunity to honor a loved one with a pink flamingo. To schedule a mammogram appointment or for more information call Broward Health Weston’s scheduling center at 954-759-7500. Appointments are strongly encouraged; weekend and evening hours are available. Broward Health Weston is located at 2300 North Commerce Parkway. BRAIN GAMES ANSWER KEY
So…You’ve Never Been to a Chiropractor BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER
F
ear of the unknown is the primary reason many people delay seeking the help of a chiropractic doctor. What can you expect when visiting a chiropractor for the first time? As a new chiropractic patient, the office staff will welcome and acquaint you to the office. They will take a detailed history of your complaint and health status, including other symptoms or health problems, and past accidents, injuries and illnesses that may have had an effect on your present condition. A good history is important for an accurate diagnosis of your problem. On your first visit, the chiropractor will do a thorough examination of your complaint. This will include a postural assessment, pertinent orthopedic, neurological and other tests, and specific joint and muscle evaluation. X-rays may be taken if they are considered to be necessary. Your doctor will then discuss the findings of the examination and x-rays.
Puzzle Page 50
Providing you with an easily understood diagnosis of your condition is an important part of your chiropractic care. Your chiropractic doctor will then discuss the various treatment options available to you. A well-informed patient is one of the main goals of every chiropractor, and you will be encouraged to ask questions throughout your care. Following the review of your examination findings, the diagnosis of your condition and discussion of treatment, the doctor will provide you with recommendations for care, which will include a detailed plan of treatment and reassessment. Chiropractors consider the re-examination to be a very important component of patient care for it enables a consistent and objective evaluation of a patient’s progress. Once you have given an informed consent to chiropractic care, the doctor will initiate treatment. Chiropractic treatment encompasses a wide variety of specialized procedures, many of which involve hands-on techniques called chiropractic adjustments. These are designed specifically to improve spinal position and joint function. When delivered by chiropractors, chiropractic adjustments have been found to be extremely safe, gentle and virtually painless. Your chiropractor may supplement the adjustment with the use of other techniques, therapies or exercises, depending upon your particular case. Before leaving the office, you will often be given suggestions for home care so that you can play an active role in helping to restore your health. For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Rick Behar or Dr. Marc Browner at Windmill Health Center in Weston at 954-217-4881. They have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Contact the Weston location for more information.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention
Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

P
lantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. Its causes can include excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time is often a contributing factor. Symptoms include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or when getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally, burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel happens with or without weightbearing. Extreme tenderness to touch in the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly associated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs. Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided may be prescribed. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury may also be recommended. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night splints are utilized to splint the foot at night to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally, immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on level of pain and discomfort may be required. Physical therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, shockwave therapy or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used. Surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel. Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of the cases if early and aggressive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition. Carlo A. ASK THE EXPERT
I
t turns out our grandparents were right. You really are what you eat. Most often when I’m in a consult about laser and fillers, my conversation inevitably leads to skincare, diet and nutrition. Why is this? Simply put, diet affects your skin. The wrong foods in your diet can damage your collagen, which results in the appearance of lines and wrinkles. So, I often advise my patients to eliminate processed foods and foods that contain a lot of sugar. Then I suggest they incorporate certain foods into their diet. If consumed consistently, they will begin to slowly see a beautiful, natural, healthy glow. Here is a list of my top six go to foods. ▸▸ Avocados: Yes, we are all aware of the avocado toast craze going on. But there are other ways to eat avocados. Avocados are a great source of biotin, which is important for healthy hair and nails. Avocados also contain decent amounts of vitamins A, D and E and omega-9 fatty acids, which help with dry skin. Using avocado oil is also great on salads and is a great oil alternative when sautéing vegetables. ▸▸ Green Tea: Yes, you can sip your way to great skin. Green tea is one of my favorite afternoon pick me ups. It is high on the list of skin friendly foods and drinks because of its high content of polyphenols. Often you will see it listed in skincare products for this reason. ▸▸ Salmon and other fatty fish: Fish is an excellent diet staple for glowing skin. Salmon consumed two to three times a week can slow down aging because it contains astaxanthin, which is a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity. Salmon is a more common fatty fish choice but sardines, mackerel and anchovies are even better choices. A plus up? These fish are all great for hair too. ▸▸ Organic tomatoes: Why organic? Because they simply taste better. The reason I love tomatoes is they are super high in antioxidants and protect the skin from sun damage, which is always a big concern living here in Florida. ▸▸ Berries: Snacking on berries will pack in antioxidants such as vitamin C and they are a natural source of sugar. Berries can help with sugar cravings and are a great substitute when eliminating processed sugar from your diet. Blueberries, cherries and raspberries are among the top picks for better skin. ▸▸ Walnuts: Not a fish lover? Nuts are another great way to add omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to your diet. They help your body maintain moisture, give hair a gorgeous shine and help hair to appear fuller because of the protein. Along with the basic aesthetic maintenance regimen of facial fillers and laser treatments, adding these foods and nutrients to your diet along with the use of natural skincare products that have antioxidants and natural ingredients is the key to building a foundation for beautiful skin and hair.

TEE TO GREEN
T
here may be no place where good timing is more important than a green side bunker. Although there may be no place where your nerves and tension come into play more with proper timing than in that same bunker. Many amateur golfers are scared of a shot from the bunker, and that fear translates into tension. There is no margin for error in the sand if you are hitting a pitch or chip shot from the grass. In those situations, you have to strike the ball precisely. In the sand, because you are not trying to strike the ball itself but the sand behind and underneath the ball, you can miss your shot with the club head by an inch or more and still get a satisfactory result. More than anything else, realDean Sklar, PGA izing that you have room for error should relieve your anxiety, booster your confidence and improve your timing. As with every other shot in golf, especially in the short game area, the successful bunker shot depends on feel. That means you need the same basic fundamentals, which lead to the same good timing, that you use with the other swings. You also have to practice as much in the sand to develop the feel for distance and the different type of shots. The single most valuable thought you can carry with you into a bunker is to finish the swing. I have seen many players just stick their club in the sand. One reason is that they are afraid to swing through to finish because they knock the ball over the green. But I think the main reason is that these golfers have neglected their fundamentals, mainly good posture and good use of the legs, which have so much bearing on success in the sand. I like to teach my students to use an open stance. Your posture should be basically the same for the sand shot as it is for the short shots – knees flexed, bent from the hips so the arms are hanging, weight evenly distributed. You first want to get into the sand and “do the twist.” You want to twist your feet into the sand to build a solid foundation. Open your hips and aim your knees and feet to the left of your intended target with what we refer to as an open stance. You then want to chock down a little on the grip and aim your club head directly at the pin. The next move is to basically take the club head back as if someone was holding the bunker rake directly behind you at a 45-degree angle, and you want to travel upward on the backswing without hitting that rake. This will allow you to come back down to the ball on a steep angle of attack. As you are traveling down with the club on that steep angle you want to imagine a line about an inch behind the ball where you want the club head to enter the sand. As you are exploding through the sand just make sure you finish your swing and try to imagine a photographer that is wanting to take a photograph of you and pose for a picture. Mentally this will make you finish your swing and not stop at the ball. Remember to always practice your short game as much as the long game and you will notice an improvement over time on your score card as you will more than likely be entering smaller numbers on it while having more fun as well out there playing!

Women and Glaucoma BY DR. JANE THERRIEN

I
t has been estimated that by the year 2020, the number of Americans living with glaucoma will increase from 60 to 80 million. Given that women outnumber and outlive men, this will result in a vast number of patients who will require optometric care. As we review risk factors for this blinding disease, perhaps gender and hormonal factors should be factored in to the decision-making process. As glaucoma is a disease of the aged optic nerve, it makes sense that those who live longer will have an increased risk. With glaucoma being a disease of progression, it is more essential to diagnose and treat earlier, especially those who may have silent risk factors, such as exposure to internally produced estrogen. The results of a study in Rotterdam, Netherlands, showed that if natural menopause occurs before the age of 45, there was a 2.3 times higher risk to develop open-angle glaucoma even with hormone replacement therapy. In addition, a study in Australia showed that late menarche of onset after 13 years of age, or early menopause before 45 years old, increases risk.

When looking at the less common forms of glaucoma, women are more likely to be susceptible to narrow-angle glaucoma. There has been a longstanding theory that shorter axial length was the physical difference; however, new evidence reveals that it may also be related to iris thickening and curvature variations. Many studies in the United States and Scandinavia agree that women are more at risk for pseudoexfoliation syndrome, and less at risk for pigmentary dispersion glaucoma. However, because these forms can be more aggressive, so should their management be. Of greatest concern is low tension glaucoma, because it is the most underdiagnosed form—yet according to the Collaborative Normal Tension Glaucoma Study, women have a higher risk. This is likely due to the multi-factorial causes for glaucoma, such as low blood pressure, migraine headaches, and reduced circulation to hands and feet which may contribute to loss of blood flow to the optic nerve. In the past, the pertinent history for glaucoma included family history, age, race, and trauma. Today we need to query further. Age of menses, use of OC/ HRT, and hysterectomy play a key role. Six percent of women enter menopause before the age of 45, and although we don’t typically ask this question, perhaps we should. Perhaps we need to specifically ask them and their partners about this information. Lifestyle choices that may be more focused to our gender should be discussed. Given some of the findings, future treatment may be more targeted toward hormonal control. Globally, women live longer, and 90 percent of centenarians are women. It is important to keep that in mind when determining target IOP and when to treat. LEGALLY SPEAKING
The Reality of Equal Time Sharing
2017 bestof weston
2016 2015 bestof bestof weston weston
BY EVAN BARON
A
s the law stands today, equal time sharing is not presumed to be in the best interest of the children in all situations. I will, however, state that it is becoming the norm rather than the exception. It is believed that frequent contact with both parents will result in better adjusted child. Of course, every case is different and as such, it is difficult to have a set rule for all cases. Parent’s work schedules, travel schedules and locations should be considered. A parent who must leave for work prior to a minor child having to wake up for school could present a problem. A parent who does not have a set schedule, such as pilots or firefighters, also require some planning. Parents who choose to live a distance apart can also complicate the situation. Of course, the other factor which is always considered is child support and how equal time sharing affects the monthly amount to be paid. Child Support in Florida is based upon several factors, one of which is the number of overnights a minor child spends with each parent. An equal time-sharing schedule will result in a reduced amount of support, since it is presumed that each parent will have significant “out of pocket” expenses if each has an equal amount of time with the child.

This concept of equal time sharing has existed for several years now. I have recently met with prospective clients who seem to share the same issue. A parent has equal time sharing pursuant to their Parenting Plan, but in reality, the parent is not actually exercising his/her 50%. The result is that the parent who is not following the schedule is receiving a financial benefit by a reduced child support payment, but is not sharing in the responsibility of caring for the child. Is there a way to correct this situation, even though the parties had previously reached an Agreement? The answer is “yes” and a correction to this situation can be accomplished by a Petition for Modification. The moving party (the parent who is in fact receiving less support than he/she should) must allege that since the parties entered into their Parenting Plan there has been a substantial change of circumstance that was not anticipated at the time the Parenting Plan was agreed to. To be successful, it is essential that a calendar be kept, listing the actual overnights being exercised by each parent. Just alleging that mom or dad doesn’t have the children 50% of the time without some additional proof will probably not be a strong or successful argument if it were to go before a judge. If the Petition is successful, a new time-sharing schedule would be determined and child support would be recalculated based upon the actual number of overnights each party is exercising. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.
Increased Risk of Heart Disease Following Breast Cancer Diagnosis Other commonly used drugs for treating breast cancer, like trastuzumab (Herceptin), can also contribute to cardiovascular problems down the road, so patients need to be aware of the risks.” In addition, radiation therapy to the chest area can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease because the treatment is administered in close proximity to the heart.
Thomas Samuel, MD Diego Sadler, MD Breast Oncologist
Cardio-Oncologist
Breast cancer survival has improved over the years due to new, innovative therapies. However, some treatments may cause cardiotoxicity, or damage to your heart. This is especially true if you are at risk for heart disease. According to Thomas Samuel, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast oncologist, “A significant issue for women with breast cancer is the ‘survivorship’ period, which refers to what happens after they survive the cancer. It’s particularly important to be aware of the risk of heart disease.” Many of the therapies used, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy, can impact a patient’s longterm cardiac risk. Dr. Samuel adds, “For example, some of the agents we use in chemotherapy increase future risk of heart failure. Certain chemotherapy regimens that include medications called anthracyclines can cause weakness of the heart muscle and congestive heart failure.
“Thankfully, today radiation therapy techniques are very safe and localized, and are designed to spare the heart from any significant damage,” said Dr. Samuel. Cardiotoxicity can occur in various forms, including damage to the heart muscle itself, arteries, or the heart valves. Although cardiotoxicity can be life-threatening, it can often be managed effectively with medication and minimally invasive treatments. Diego Sadler, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida cardio-oncologist said, “Fortunately, the percentage of patients affected by these treatments is relatively small and there are now sophisticated imaging modalities that allow early detection and treatment of heart disease resulting from cancer treatment for breast cancer.” Breast cancer patients who have undergone these types of treatments, but who are also at high risk for heart disease due to other conditions, are at an increased risk for cardiotoxicity. “Pre-existing factors such as hypertension, diabetes or genetic conditions affect breast cancer survivors similar to how
they affect the general population; however, having undergone certain cancer therapies may put them at an even higher risk for heart disease,” said Dr. Sadler. It is also important to know that some therapies used in the treatment of breast cancer have the potential to cause cardiac disease many years, even decades after treatment. For this reason, surveillance to allow for early detection and treatment can offer improved cardio-vascular outcomes. The relatively new specialty, cardio-oncology, focuses on the effect cancer treatments have on the heart. Cleveland Clinic Florida is one of South Florida’s leading healthcare providers for both cancer and cardio-oncology care. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s multidisciplinary cardio-oncology team of oncologists, cardiologists, radiologists and cancer support specialists customize unique treatment plans for each patient. They are dedicated to caring for patients in every stage of cancer treatment who are at risk for, or have developed cardiovascular disease. This allows for the safe completion of potentially life-saving cancer treatments with minimal effects to their cardiovascular health – ultimately giving patients the best opportunity for long-term survivorship. ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. They are: Periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T”, or anchor incision (same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold). All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Gastrointestinal Parasites in Dogs and Cats BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM
Rocky’s Roofing Large or Small, We Top ALL!
PET CARE
G
astrointestinal (GI) parasites include any parasites that live in the stomach or intestines of a host. A variety of GI parasites affect dogs and cats. They range from roundworms and tapeworms, which are visible with the naked eye, to microscopic organisms like coccidia and Giardia. Regardless of their size, GI parasites can cause serious illness and sometimes even death in pets. Some parasites are zoonotic, which means humans can become infected. The following are the most common GI parasites in pets: ▸▸ Roundworms: Roundworms are visible with the naked eye and resemble small pieces of spaghetti. In humans, roundworms can lead to larva migrans, an illness caused by migration of young worms through body organs such as the liver, lungs, and nervous system. ▸▸ Hookworms: These worms attach to the intestinal wall and suck blood and other nutrients from their hosts. Hookworms can cause severe blood loss and diarrhea in infected pets. Infective hookworm larvae in the environment can penetrate the skin and infect a new host. When this happens in humans, the condition is called cutaneous larva migrans. People with this condition may experience itchy skin lesions with a snakelike pattern. ▸▸ Tapeworms: Tapeworms are long, flat worms that are actually made up of numerous segments; each segment contains tapeworm eggs. Humans can become infected if they inadvertently eat tapeworm eggs or infected fleas. ▸▸ Giardia: Giardia organisms are single-celled parasites that live in the intestines. Fecal-contaminated water, food, or soil can be sources of infection. ▸▸ Coccidia: Coccidia are microscopic GI parasites. They can cause severe diarrhea in some infected pets. ▸▸ Whipworms: Whipworms live in the large intestines of dogs and shed eggs into the environment. Female whipworms can produce over 2000 eggs daily, and environmental contamination can persist for years. How Do Pets Become Infected With Gastrointestinal Parasites? In most cases, eggs or infective stages of GI parasites are shed in the host’s fecal material. Once parasites are in the environment, other pets can be exposed through direct contact with feces or exposure to soil, water, or plants that have been contaminated with feces. Some GI parasites can remain in the environment for months to years. Some parasites can infect small animals (like rodents); pets become infected when they prey on these small hosts and eat them. Some GI parasites can infect puppies and kittens when they nurse from their infected mothers, and puppies can sometimes become infected during fetal development. Tapeworms are slightly different in that they can be transmitted by fleas. The immature stage of the tapeworm lives inside the flea. When a pet grooms a flea off of its hair, it eats the flea (and the tapeworm). The tapeworm then hatches inside the pet and continues its life cycle. What Are the Clinical Signs of Gastrointestinal Parasites? Diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss can be among the clinical signs of GI parasite infection. However, many infected pets don’t show any clinical signs at all. The best way to tell if your pet is infected is to have him or her tested for parasites. What Is Deworming? Deworming involves administering (or in some cases, applying) medication to treat and control infections with GI parasites. Because puppies and kittens are commonly infected with GI parasites, many veterinarians routinely deworm these young patients several times. Fecal testing can detect GI parasites in most cases, but parasites are not detectable all the time. Even if testing does not confirm parasites, your veterinarian may recommend deworming as a precaution. This is not harmful to your pet. Deworming medications come in a variety of formulations, including pills, chewable tablets, topical spot-on products that are applied to the skin between the shoulder blades, and liquid medications given by mouth. Your veterinarian can recommend the most appropriate deworming medications for your pet.

My best friend and partner Ricardo Alietti and I started in the restaurant business in 1999 with the opening of Baires Grill. Within a couple of years, due to the great success of the restaurant, and our passion for the business and desire to broaden our horizons, we moved to a new location. We reopened our doors as Baires Grill Argentinean Steak House at the Lincoln Road Mall on South Beach; the first of many. Today we have restaurants in Brickell and Sunny Isles, and now Weston.
