10 Parenting Tips for Ages 0 to 5 by Kimberly Blaker
Being the parent of a baby, toddler, or preschooler has so many rewards – and those rewards are well earned by the numerous trials parents must contend with at every stage. Let the following tips guide you through some of the challenges you’re likely to face.
Just one spoonful, please.
Getting young children to take a spoonful of nasty, bitter tasting medicine is a nightmare most parents have experienced. So hide the taste by mixing it with yummy strawberry or chocolate syrup.
Potty training challenge.
Rewards work wonders with potty training. Fill a bowl or basket with small prizes your toddler can choose from each time your child uses the toilet or potty chair. Keep it interesting by using a variety of prizes. Some ideas for inexpensive rewards include happy meal toys, stickers, gumball machine prizes, bitesize candy bars, mini Playdough containers, markers, or anything your toddler finds intriguing.
Hair washing horrors.
Most youngsters love bathtime play. But when it comes to getting their hair washed, you’d swear you’re sending them through a torture chamber. The issue is, young children hate water running down their faces. The solution is to fill the tub only 3 inches deep with water. Then roll up a rubber bathtub mat. Have your child lie on their back with the rolled up mat underneath the neck. This keeps your child’s face above water level while your child’s head is tilted back. So the water runs away from your child’s face when you rinse. Once the hair is washed, fill the tub a little more, and reward your child with playtime.
Binky battle.
Are you beginning to question whether your toddler or
4
Our Kids Magazine | BabyTots 2018
preschooler will be heading to school with a pacifier in their mouth? Fortunately, this battle is far less challenging than parents anticipate. If your child seems really dependent on it, the best approach might be to wean your child gradually. Make a new rule that your toddler can only have it at nap time and bedtime. The bonus is your toddler may be much more cooperative about naps and bedtime in order to have the pacifier. Once your child has had time to adjust to being without the binky during the daytime, move forward with the final step, and eliminate the pacifier altogether.
The hellacious temper tantrum.
It isn’t a pretty picture, I know. As a result, parents resort to a variety of tactics to bring tantrums to a halt. But as long as you aren’t in public and your child isn’t behaving aggressively, the best choice is often to ignore it. Calmly tell your child you’re leaving the room and will return when your child calms down. Then just walk away. This lets your child know the tantrum isn’t going to help your child get their way. It also helps you to keep your cool and prevents you from caving in to your child by removing yourself from the situation.
You win some; you lose some.
When playing games with preschoolers, it’s tempting always to let them win. No parent likes to see their child disappointed, or worse, storming away. But teaching your child to accept losing is essential to your child becoming a good sport. The next time you play a board game, allow your preschooler to lose, and teach your child to shake the winner’s hand. Tell your child ‘good game,’ and praise your child for handling the loss well.
Eek! Germs.
It may seem counterintuitive, but don’t be a germaphobe around your young child. Kids need exposure to germs to build up their immune systems. This doesn’t mean you should
intentionally expose your child to the flu or allow your toddler to crawl around on the dirty bathroom floor. But to a reasonable degree, allow your baby or child exposure to dirt and bacteria. Don’t panic if your toddler happens to eat a cracker that fell on the living room floor. Also, get your baby or young child out of the house for exposure to other people regularly. Studies have found children exposed to infections earlier on build immunity and are less likely to be affected by exposure as they grow.
Can I have my bed back, please?

FUN
There’s much debate over the issue of cosleeping. But most experts agree, it’s really up to the preference of parents. There are benefits and drawbacks for children and parents alike. Often, though, cosleeping becomes a ritual parents never really intended. Once it begins, it’s a challenge to get a child back to sleeping in their own bed. To recover ownership of your bed, tell your child “you’re a big girl (or boy) now, so it’s time to sleep in your own bed.” Then, as Meri Wallace LCSW, in “6 Steps for Getting Your Child to Sleep Alone,” suggests, sit in a chair right next your child’s bed to keep your child company. Over the course of a few days, gradually move your chair further from your child’s bed. SMILE Then, as your child grows more comfortable, say you’re going to the bathroom or kitchen but that you’ll be right back. Do just as you promised. Eventually, your child will adjust to your absence and be able to go to bed alone.

Sleep, baby, sleep. As a new parent, it’s a learning process to figure out how to get your baby to sleep, especially after nighttime feedings. One of the best techniques is swaddling your baby because that’s what your baby experienced in your womb. Start with laying the blanket out flat in a diamond, then flap the top corner over about 4 or 5 inches. Next, lay your baby on the blanket with the base of its head at the edge of the flap. Now flap the right side over your baby. Then fold up the bottom corner over your baby. Finally flap the left side over and wrap it around, so your baby is comfortably snug.
Just one more bite of veggies, please.

Prenatal Fitness & Nutrition by Denise Morrison Yearian
Many pregnant women know that maintaining a moderate exercise routine and a nutritionally sound diet provide both short- and long-term benefits to the mother and baby. But routines and regimens that may be helpful during one stage of gestation may be detrimental during another. That’s what Hunter Clarke-Fields found. Before becoming pregnant with her second child, she led an active lifestyle. But when nausea and fatigue set in during the first trimester, she was forced to curtail her workouts. “Somewhere around 13 weeks I started feeling better, so I eased back into my yoga—which I had stopped altogether—and brought my cardio exercises up to speed,” she says, now 26 weeks pregnant. Although nausea and fatigue may compromise women’s exercise routines early on, these side effects usually subside by the second trimester. As the fetus grows, however, mothers may find certain positions and movements increasingly uncomfortable, tiring—even harmful. By the beginning of the second trimester, women should avoid supine and inverse positions as these can restrict the baby’s blood flow, says certified Pilate’s instructor Mara Raskin. “During this time the hormone Relaxin also kicks in, making ligament looser and joints more vulnerable to injury. And as the belly expands, the 8

body’s center of gravity shifts and can cause stress on the lower back and pelvic muscles,” she says. At this point Raskin suggests women focus on the upper and mid back, shoulders and chest muscles. “This will support their shifting weight, help maintain posture and strengthen the muscles that support the spine,” she says. “Women should also strengthen the pelvic floor muscles by drawing them in and up with Kegal exercises.” Rose Willard does this. Now 14 weeks pregnant, the personal trainer has altered her routine to prepare for the road ahead. “I start with a five-minute warm up on the elliptical trainer, followed by weight training—using less weights and more repetitions than before—to strengthen both my upper and lower body,” she says. “I then do transverse abdominal exercises to stabilize my spine and end with another fifteen minutes of cardio, making sure my heart rate doesn’t exceed the recommended 140 beats per minute. To strengthen the pelvic floor and PC muscles, I also do Kegal exercises.” These days Clark-Fields is focusing more on back and abdominal muscles to ease back pain and prepare for labor. “In addition to the back and ab equipment I use at the gym, I do a lot of balancing poses and planks to strengthen my abs and back. I also do cat stretches, downward dogs and some gentle side-to-side twisting,” she says. “As the pregnancy has progressed I just listen to
my body, and if an exercise doesn’t feel right, I don’t do it.” Good idea, says Deborah Ehrenthal, MD, FACP, OB/ Gyn specialist. “If you’re in doubt or feel discomfort, don’t do it. Most important, if you experience bleeding or pain, stop and talk with your doctor. It may be completely unrelated but it should be checked out,” she says. During exercise wear loose, layered clothing and a supportive bra. Sip on water to stay hydrated, and precede and end your workouts with a small protein-carbohydrate snack to provide quick and long-lasting energy and maintain muscle. That’s what Willard does. “I’ll have a natural peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole grain bread about an hour beforehand and a banana and whey protein shake afterward,” she says. “I’ve also added 300 calories to my diet per day and have increased the frequency of my meals because I’m always hungry.” Emily Moore, RD, LDN, prenatal nutrition educator, says small frequent meals are a good remedy for morning sickness and heartburn too. She advises women to eat six meals every two to three hours and consume fluids between meals, rather than during. It may also be helpful eat before getting out of bed. “To avoid heartburn, don’t lie down immediately after eating, lay with your head slightly elevated and avoid caffeine, chocolate and highly seasoned foods,” says Moore. “Another common complaint, constipation, can be prevented by increasing high-fiber foods and fluid intake and engaging in moderate exercise.” Moore believes good prenatal nutrition is paramount because it can affect the child’s metabolic and endocrine health throughout childhood and into adulthood. She suggests choosing whole grain products, fruits and vegetables for its fiber, vitamin, mineral and antioxidant benefits, and low-fat dairy products for its calcium content. Likewise, meat and beans provide protein and iron, which are necessary to healthy cell development and delivering oxygen to the baby. “Many women are concerned about eating fish due to its mercury content, but fish contains essential Omega-3 fatty acids, DHA, which is vital to brain, eye and central nervous system development,” she says. “Rather than crossing fish off your list, choose ones low in mercury and high in Omega-3, such as flounder, herring, fresh salmon, sardines, squid and fresh water trout. Omega-3 fortified eggs are a good option too.” -Denise Morrison Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children.

Tips for the Toddler Bed Transition from a Triplet Mom By Sarah Lyons
The moment I have been dreading for months has arrived. I can no longer contain my triplet two-year-olds in their cribs. Two thirds of them are climbing out of them and destroying the room. The one child who cannot climb out has declared her crib as party central. The two monkeys go straight into her crib after they have destroyed their entire bedroom, with such fun activities as opening the shades, emptying drawers, and dumping diapers. I find them like this on a daily basis. Screaming and cheering as they bounce up and down in one crib together. This is how I knew I could no longer wait to make the transition to toddler beds. Here are some toddler bed transition tips from a triplet mom.
Wait as long as possible If your child is climbing out of their crib and wandering the room, it is time to switch to a big kid bed. Climbing in and out of their crib puts your child at a higher risk of falling and getting hurt. However, if your child is content in their crib 10
Our Kids Magazine | BabyTots 2018
and has made no attempt to escape, don’t rush to make the switch. My oldest son slept in his crib without trying to climb out until almost three years old. Eventually, he became too tall for a crib and he had an easy transition to a twin bed.
Choose the right time Many parents will transition their kids to a twin or toddler bed because they need the crib for a soon-to-be arriving younger sibling. If possible, try to make the transition to a big kid bed when there are few other transitions going on in your child’s life. Starting a new school, potty training, moving, or the arrival of a new sibling can all be reasons to delay the switch. If you do have a new baby arriving and need the crib, consider starting shortly after you find out you are pregnant, using a bassinet for baby for a few months, or purchasing a second crib.
Make it their own If you have decided the time is right to make
the switch, get your child excited about their new bed. Purchasing new bedding and pillows can make their new space more welcoming and exciting. Consider updating their room with new big kid decorations or buying fun pillowcases with their favorite cartoon character on them.
Create a safe environment Whether your child was climbing out of bed before the switch or not, they will have more freedom in their bedroom than they have had in the past and it is important to make sure they are safe during rest times. If a child were to climb on their dresser or bookshelf it could tip forward and cause serious injury or death. Bolt dressers, bookshelves, changing tables, or any other furniture to the wall to make the safest environment for your toddler. Put away breakable items, cover outlets, and clear the room of any hazards. If your child can open the bedroom door, consider installing a door knob safety cover or gate so that they cannot wander the house freely if they wake up earlier than mom and dad.
Be consistent Transitions can be difficult for toddlers but
they are easier when you are consistent and stick with it. Most parents worry that once their child does transition to a big kid bed, they will stop sleeping well. For the best results, lay your child down when they are tired and ready to rest. If you followed a daily routine before laying your child down in their crib continue it. If not try starting a daily routine that might look something like this: take a bath, put on pajamas, read a book, brush teeth and visit the restroom, have some snuggles and then get in bed. When your child knows what to expect, they will know that it is not playtime and is time to rest. Transitioning from a crib to a big kid bed is a big deal! It is exciting, fun, and sometimes challenging. Parents can help their kids with this milestone by being supportive and giving positive reinforcement. Praise and reward your child for making it through each night, for taking a nap, and for following rules. Before too long, the crib will be a thing of the past. Sarah Lyons is a midwestern mom of six children, including 2 year old triplets. The triplets have recently made the transition from cribs to big kid beds.

Cool Off This Summer With Books! In this season of swimming pools and road trips, remember that some of the best memories you can make with your kids involve reading a book! Here are a few fun stories that you and your child can cool off with this summer. When’s My Birthday? Written by Julie Fogliano; illustrated by Christian Robinson. Roaring Book Press, 2017. This awardwinning book deserves to become a birthday tradition for little ones everywhere! It’s a breathless, eager echo of the anticipation children feel as their birthday approaches - oh, the food! the gifts! the party! Even grown-up readers may find themselves unexpectedly excited about their own birthdays after reading this one. This book is just perfect for a bouncy, hand-clapping lap read each evening for a week or two before a youngster’s big day. Ages 3 – 6. Jabari Jumps Written and illustrated by Gaia Cornwall. Candlewick Press, 2017. Young Jabari is finally ready to jump off the diving board...until...he isn’t. A perfect summer read about courage and overcoming one’s fears in a setting that so many children (and parents) can relate to this time of year! Even readers who haven’t yet taken that trip up the high dive ladder can experience it through Cornwall’s beautiful illustrations with their unique perspectives - the view from the top of the diving board is especially striking. Jabari’s calm, understanding father delivers some wise words of advice that help ensure Jabari’s ultimate success. Ages 3 – 10.
Will You Help Doug Find His Dog? Written by Jane Caston; illustrated by Carmen Saldana. Barefoot Books, 2017. Doug’s dog is lost at the park and readers are asked to help him find it! Kids will love using their observation skills to find scruffy, spotted, and small dogs, and they’re invited to engage with the illustrations by patting, tickling, and even kissing the different dogs. Gradually, the choices are all narrowed down to just one dog – but then, a fun surprise ending! This is another great summertime read, easy to spark discussions and comparisons of dogs that children might see at the neighborhood park or pool. Ages 3-6. Oops, Pounce, Quick, Run! An Alphabet Caper Written and illustrated by Mike Twohy. Balzer & Bray, 2016. A fun and different approach to an ABC book! Using only one word per page, Oops, Pounce, Quick, Run! relates the crazy chase that ensues when Dog’s ball rolls into Mouse’s hole, while clever illustrations fill out the story’s details. Children (and their grownups) will giggle at the character’s antics, then be happily satisfied by the unexpected ending. Each word appears in large type, with the first letter offset in a contrasting color that makes it easy for little ones to find and identify. Kids will ask for this short, easy, funny read again and again! Ages 3 - 7. Escape the lazy, hot afternoons this summer by spending some time reading with your kids! Not only will you be building brain connections and enhancing their powers of concentration, you’ll be creating an emotional bond and good memories. Sherry Philippus is a wife, mother of three, and elementary school librarian in NEISD in San Antonio, TX. She is also an Ambassador for Barefoot Books, a children’s publisher specializing in diverse and inclusive books.
