5 Halloween Traditions For Kids Halloween means costumes, pumpkin carving, and trick-ortreating. Traditions create lasting memories and something to look forward to each year. Halloween is a perfect time to start some new traditions with your kids. Try some of these ideas.

Ready Set Decorate Before you can go trick-or-treating, everyone will need a costume. Have some fun and create coordinating costumes for the whole family or give your child permission to make their own costume with things around the house. Since the kids will need something to collect all that candy in, try decorating your own bucket, bag, or pillowcase to trick-or-treating. Kids could use the same one in the future and enjoy looking back on what they created when they were younger or make a new one each year. Prepare for trick-or-treaters by setting up a spooky atmosphere. Get the kids involved in decorating both the in and outside of the house before Halloween. Make a scarecrow, change the lightbulbs to purple or orange, and hang up homemade or store bought decorations near your door.

Pumpkin time Pumpkins are a symbol of Halloween and fall but before buy your pumpkins from the store, try visiting a local pumpkin patch. Many will have apple cider, fall treats, corn mazes, hayrack rides, a nice variety of pumpkin styles and sizes, and more. Once you have your pumpkins picked out and it is time to do the carving, make things more interesting by coming up with an original theme each year. Some ideas may include - sports, cartoon characters, animals, words, or traditional spooky faces. Many ideas and templates can be found online to get you started.

pumpkins, bob for apples, and create some holiday-themed treats such as mummy hot dogs, witch finger pretzels, pumpkin shaped pizza, or caramel apples. Try using squash or small pumpkins to bowl, use toilet paper to make friends and family into mummies, or play pin the hat on the witch. Whether you invite friends over for a party or add some fun to your family time, your kids are sure to remember the extra effort you added to make the holiday special.

A Spooky Story Kids love a spooky story. Parents can choose ageappropriate movies or books to get their kids in the mood for Halloween. Make up your own stories and share them by candlelight. You can host a spooky movie sleepover for your family or allow kids to invite a few friends over to celebrate.

Give back Parents can use the holiday as an opportunity to give back to the community. Try participating in a trunk or treat in the area. Each participant decorates the trunk of their car and hands out candy to families who attend. You could also do a “trick-or-treat for hunger” on or around Halloween. Go door to door and ask for non-perishable food donations to give to a local food pantry. Many families also participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project by offering allergen-free treats or small toys so that kids with food allergies can safely participate in Halloween activities. Family traditions are easy to start and worthwhile to continue. As your children grow, they may not remember everything you hope they will, but the traditions that you return to, year after year, will create lasting memories that they will treasure for years to come.

How to Be More Productive This School Year

“It is eleven o’clock. You should go to sleep now.”

“But I haven’t finished my homework yet.”

This common exchange between my 13-year-old daughter and me occurs more often than I care to admit. Even though she gets home at 2 pm, she often procrastinates completing her homework until right before bedtime. She is also a repeat offender of waiting until the last minute to start research projects.

Being productive when completing homework or in a job is an issue for many teenagers who are easily distracted by electronics, socializing or other fun activities.

Put Away Devices “The best tip for teens to improve productivity is to put your phone away. Our smartphones can be exceptionally useful tools, but they can also be exceptionally distracting,” says Emily Price, author of the book, Productivity Hacks: 500+ Easy Ways to Accomplish More at Work--That Actually Work! Price wrote the book based on fifteen years of interviewing people ranging from low-level employees to CEOs. Price says, “Everyone and every company has a different approach to ‘how to work.’”

Price recommends that teens put their phone in another room when they are trying to be productive. If they need their phone to for homework, then she suggests using “Do Not Disturb” mode to limit the distracting sounds of a “pinging phone”. She says, “Being disconnected for a few hours can make a tremendous difference to your productivity.”

Have a Dedicated Workspace Price also suggests a dedicated workspace. She says, “Having an ‘office’ or a place where you traditionally do your work can be great for a number of reasons. First, it can help put you in the mindset for ‘work’ when you sit down.

Secondly, it can be a signal to other people in your home that you’re busy working and shouldn’t be disturbed.”

productive in school and with homework or any jobs is making sure that they are intrinsically motivated,” says Maria Sanders, a licensed social worker and certified parent coach.

Have Teens Create Their Own Plan Sanders explains that you can help your teen become motivated by allowing them to feel competent, connected and autonomous. She says, “It is important for teens to come up with their own plan of action of how they can be productive rather than having the parent dictate the best tips and strategies.”

If a teen can be involved in their decision-making process of how to be productive then it is more likely that they will follow through with their work. While they are thinking of a productivity plan have them consider any obstacles or challenges that will be barriers to their productivity along with their strengths and resources.

Eat Breakfast Price and Sanders agree that starting the day by eating breakfast helps your mind to become more alert and provides energy to be productive in school. Since most teenagers get up early for school, eating breakfast can be a challenge. If this is an issue due to time, then Price suggests drinking a smoothie or eating a protein bar. She says, “Breakfast doesn’t have to mean eggs and bacon, but it should involve enough calories to kickstart your metabolism and keep you full until lunch time.”

Sanders explains that if your teen isn’t eating breakfast then ask questions like, “Do you think skipping breaking is working for you? Do you have enough energy during school?” These questions can help teens to feel part of the decision-making process and think about their choices.

Price suggests that teens do not sleep in the same room as their phones which can disrupt or prevent them from going to sleep. She also says that taking a warm shower before going to bed can relax your muscles and prepare your body for sleep.

If your teen isn’t getting enough sleep at night then Sander encourages parents to ask questions like, “Do you feel tired in the morning or during the day? How can you improve the amount of sleep you are getting at night?” These questions can help them to figure out a way to improve their sleep schedule.

Use A Productive App In Price’s book, she recommends various apps that can help increase productivity. Some apps that Price thinks teens would find beneficial are: RescueTime: This app will track how much time you spend on certain websites and certain apps on your computer.

You can use this information to be more aware of the time spent on social media and then change it by setting a timer when using social media if necessary, to be more productive.

Just Read: is a Chrome extension that will remove things like flashy webpage styles, pop-up ads, and comments, and turn the article into a simplified text which helps to prevent distractions while reading.

Forest: This app grows virtual trees when you’re not using

your phone. When you launch an app or browse the Internet, the trees wither and die. Using this app will make you more aware of how much you’re using your phone and encourage you to put it away so your virtual trees and productivity can grow.

Grammarly: This web and mobile app can read through the text you write and look for any spelling or grammar errors.

FocusWriter: is a minimalist word processing app for Windows, Mac, and Linux that forces you to focus on something you’re writing by preventing you from doing other things on your computer. The app blocks programs and websites that might take your attention away from your writing, and it allows you to set timers to break up your work into sessions so you’re not working too much at once.

When you take care of your physical health by having proper nutrition and sleep, then you can focus on two key factors to improving productivity which is motivation and preventing distractions.

Sanders says, “It is important to understand how powerful our children are when they are motivated.”

Car Seat Safety: What You Need to Know

A car seat is one of the most important items a parent will buy for their child. In fact, new Chicco research* commissioned ahead of Baby Safety Month this September found that 42% of children spend four or more hours in their car seats in a typical week – that’s a lot of miles on the road. Whether heading to daycare drop-off or on a grocery store run, it’s critical that parents ensure their child is properly secured in the right seat.

From infants to big kids, it’s important to keep child safety in the driver’s seat (metaphorically, of course!).

Here’s a closer look at additional survey findings and what parents need to know about proper car seat use: • Parents like to do their car seat homework: Car seats rank in the top three purchases parents spend the most time researching, among a new home and the daily household conundrum of what to eat for dinner, then followed by other purchases including a car or vacation. So, what should parents look for?

When choosing a car seat, parents should focus on key features including ease of install, child fit and comfort – all three play a critical role in keeping children safe.

• An easy at-home test to make sure your car seat is installed securely: When it comes to car seat installation, 55% of parents do not know or are not sure what the ‘inch test’ is. It’s a simple at-home way to check if 18

your child’s car seat is secure. After installing, simply give the car seat and base a good tug forward and from side-to-side. If the seat moves more than one inch in any direction, you should uninstall the seat and start over until a secure fit is achieved and your installation can pass the ‘inch test.’

• Winter coat protocol: With the weather turning cooler in the coming months, it’s a good idea to clear up confusion about winter coats and car seats. 40% of parents say it is recommended for a child to wear a winter coat in a car seat with a five-point harness or they are unsure. However, best practice is to remove baby’s bulky coat before car rides as it can give a false sense of harness tightness. In a crash, down or poly fill compresses, which means, underneath all that fluff, you have a child in a harness that is too loose.

8 Immune Boosting Foods to Keep Your Family Healthie

Kids get sick often, and although colds and tummy bugs are a part of childhood, keeping their bodies strong with a healthy diet can give them an edge against the germs they encounter in everyday life. Here are eight superfoods to add into your meal repertoire along with kid-friendly serving suggestions.

Berries This one isn’t a hard sell with kids. Berries are bursting with bioflavonoids, the plant chemicals that help to activate the immune system and work as antioxidants to prevent cell damage. The darker the berry, the higher the bioflavonoids. But all berries are good for you, one cup of strawberries contains the same amount of Vitamin C as a cup of OJ. Best of all, it’s been proven that frozen blueberries retain all of the good vitamins and chemicals, so you can benefit all winter long. Add berries to cereal, smoothies or yogurt.

Yogurt Yogurt that has “live or active cultures” (listed on the label) offers probiotics which have been shown to reduce inflammation, which is implicated in viral and gut issues.

The other immunity boosting properties of yogurt are due to magnesium, selenium, Vitamin D and zinc. The healthiest yogurt is the plain, unsweetened type with active cultures. Mix in a berry such as blueberries to sweeten 20

plain yogurt, or try a commercial brand with probiotics such as Activia.

Eggs Eggs have gotten a bad rap in the past when they were suspected of raising cholesterol. However, more recent studies show that eating 6-12 eggs per week in the context of a healthy diet doesn’t raise the risk of heart disease. You can feel good about eating eggs, especially since they are full of high quality protein, plus a slew of other vitamins and minerals. Eggs are rich in B vitamins, choline, selenium, Vitamin A, iron and phosphorus, plus they contain two antioxidants that protect eye health: zeaxanthin and lutein. Hard boiled eggs are great for snacking or whip up an omelette for breakfast or dinner.

Nuts and Seeds Nuts are powerhouse foods. Almonds, for example, contain Vitamin E, an antioxidant which helps to fight off infection. Nuts and seeds are not only yummy, they offer an array of phytochemicals and minerals. Nuts have different nutritional profiles, so consume a variety to give your body what it needs. Nuts are great as a yogurt topper or just for snacking.

Sweet Potatoes Sweet potatoes are worthy of the dinner table yearround with the numerous health benefits. Their bright color comes from carotenoids, which is an antioxidant.

Just one sweet potato contains 400 percent of the daily requirement of Vitamin A as well as Vitamins B, C and D, plus many good-for-you minerals. To get your kids to eat this goodness, try serving a baked sweet potato with butter and brown sugar instead of a regular baked potato or have mashed sweet potatoes as a side dish.

Red Bell Peppers These brightly colored veggies taste sweeter than their green counterparts making these more palatable for kids, plus they contain three times more vitamin C than oranges. Vitamin C is thought to boost white cell production- the cells that fight infection. Red bell peppers also pack a healthy amount of beta carotene which is good for eye health. Serve raw with a dip or sauted in a stir fry.

Broccoli Mom was right, broccoli is good for you. Broccoli contains Vitamin C,B D, E and K as well as folate. More importantly, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables contain glucosinolates which protect cells from DNA damage and have been shown to have anti bacterial, antiviral and even anticancer effects. Other vegetables in this family include cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, arugula, brussel sprouts, kale, radish and turnips. Try enticing kids with raw broccoli or cauliflower served with a yummy dip or steam it and top with cheese. Roasting vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts bring out the sweet flavor and tones down the bitterness of cruciferous veggies.

1. What is miscarriage? Miscarriage is defined as pregnancy loss prior to 20 weeks. If the pregnancy lasts beyond 20 weeks but is unsuccessful, it is termed stillbirth.

2. Am I to blame for my baby’s death? Miscarriage is traumatic for all pregnant women and their partners. If you have had, are having, or will have a miscarriage, remember this: Miscarriage is NOT your fault.

3. How soon can I get pregnant again after a miscarriage? I always suggest waiting for at least one regular period before getting pregnant again. It can then be

determined with more accuracy when you are due. In addition, having a normal period signals your body is done with the miscarriage process.

4. Who is likely to miscarry? Anyone can miscarry.

The most often quoted numbers say 10 to 20 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. When the miscarriage rate includes those fetuses lost before the missing of a period, the high-end rate increases up to 40 percent.

5. How do I tell a period from a miscarriage? There is cramping with miscarriage, often like a period, but sometimes more severe. Most of the time, bleeding will be heavier than a period, but seldom requiring a blood transfusion.

6. What if my doctor can’t hear a heartbeat?

With a Doppler, I can hear a heartbeat at about 11 or 12 weeks. It is easier to see the heartbeat with an ultrasound at seven to eight weeks. If I can’t see the heartbeat at seven or eight weeks, out of reverence and concern for the fetus, I recheck in one week. If I can’t hear a heartbeat, most women prefer to wait for a spontaneous miscarriage which usually follows after one or two weeks. If one or two weeks go by without

a miscarriage, I recommended misoprostol (Cytotec) by mouth.

While it is possible to use misoprostol without waiting the two weeks for a spontaneous miscarriage, it would not be my first choice because aggressive treatment can interfere with the grieving process. I prefer to allow a wide margin around guilt, blame, and shame.

7. What happens when someone has repeated miscarriages? Miscarriage before there is a beating heart is common, and is usually a chromosomal mutation. These are not preventable. However, once the heart is beating, several conditions can lead to a miscarriage. Many of these repeated miscarriages are preventable. If you have had more than two miscarriages, it’s time to look at the list of treatable conditions that are known to contribute to miscarriage in some women (i.e., Strep B or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase — MTFHR).
